ਇਕਿ ਨਚਿ ਨਚਿ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਤਾਲ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਜਈ ॥

इकि नचि नचि पूरहि ताल भगति न कीजई ॥

Iki nachi nachi poorahi taal bhagati na keejaee ||

Some dance and dance and keep the beat, but they do not worship Him with devotion.

ਇਕਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜਈ ॥

इकि अंनु न खाहि मूरख तिना किआ कीजई ॥

Iki annu na khaahi moorakh tinaa kiaa keejaee ||

Some refuse to eat; what can be done with these fools?

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਹੋਈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਿਵੈ ਨ ਧੀਜਈ ॥

त्रिसना होई बहुतु किवै न धीजई ॥

Trisanaa hoee bahutu kivai na dheejaee ||

Thirst and desire have greatly increased; nothing brings satisfaction.

ਕਰਮ ਵਧਹਿ ਕੈ ਲੋਅ ਖਪਿ ਮਰੀਜਈ ॥

करम वधहि कै लोअ खपि मरीजई ॥

Karam vadhahi kai loa khapi mareejaee ||

Some are tied down by rituals; they hassle themselves to death.

ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਜਈ ॥

लाहा नामु संसारि अम्रितु पीजई ॥

Laahaa naamu sanssaari ammmritu peejaee ||

In this world, profit comes by drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam.

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘੀਜਈ ॥੧੭॥

हरि भगती असनेहि गुरमुखि घीजई ॥१७॥

Hari bhagatee asanehi guramukhi gheejaee ||17||

The Gurmukhs gather in loving devotional worship of the Lord. ||17||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਲਾਰ ਰਾਗੁ ਜੋ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुरमुखि मलार रागु जो करहि तिन मनु तनु सीतलु होइ ॥

Guramukhi malaar raagu jo karahi tin manu tanu seetalu hoi ||

Those Gurmukhs who sing in the Raga of Malaar - their minds and bodies become cool and calm.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

गुर सबदी एकु पछाणिआ एको सचा सोइ ॥

Gur sabadee eku pachhaa(nn)iaa eko sachaa soi ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they realize the One, the One True Lord.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਚੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

मनु तनु सचा सचु मनि सचे सची सोइ ॥

Manu tanu sachaa sachu mani sache sachee soi ||

Their minds and bodies are true; they obey the True Lord, and they are known as true.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

अंदरि सची भगति है सहजे ही पति होइ ॥

Anddari sachee bhagati hai sahaje hee pati hoi ||

True devotional worship is deep within them; they are automatically blessed with honor.

ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਰਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

कलिजुग महि घोर अंधारु है मनमुख राहु न कोइ ॥

Kalijug mahi ghor anddhaaru hai manamukh raahu na koi ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, there is utter darkness; the self-willed manmukh cannot find the way.

ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

से वडभागी नानका जिन गुरमुखि परगटु होइ ॥१॥

Se vadabhaagee naanakaa jin guramukhi paragatu hoi ||1||

O Nanak, very blessed are those Gurmukhs, unto whom the Lord is revealed. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਇੰਦੁ ਵਰਸੈ ਕਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥

इंदु वरसै करि दइआ लोकां मनि उपजै चाउ ॥

Ianddu varasai kari daiaa lokaan mani upajai chaau ||

The clouds rain down mercifully, and joy wells up in the minds of the people.

ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਇੰਦੁ ਵਰਸਦਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਂਉ ॥

जिस कै हुकमि इंदु वरसदा तिस कै सद बलिहारै जांउ ॥

Jis kai hukami ianddu varasadaa tis kai sad balihaarai jaanu ||

I am forever a sacrifice to the One, by whose Command the clouds burst forth with rain.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि सबदु सम्हालीऐ सचे के गुण गाउ ॥

Guramukhi sabadu samhaaleeai sache ke gu(nn) gaau ||

The Gurmukhs dwell on the Word of the Shabad. They sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੨॥

नानक नामि रते जन निरमले सहजे सचि समाउ ॥२॥

Naanak naami rate jan niramale sahaje sachi samaau ||2||

O Nanak, those humble beings who are imbued with the Naam are pure and immaculate. They are intuitively merged in the True Lord. ||2||

Pauree:

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

पूरा सतिगुरु सेवि पूरा पाइआ ॥

Pooraa satiguru sevi pooraa paaiaa ||

Serving the Perfect True Guru, I have found the Perfect Lord.

ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਇ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

पूरै करमि धिआइ पूरा सबदु मंनि वसाइआ ॥

Poorai karami dhiaai pooraa sabadu manni vasaaiaa ||

Meditating on the Perfect Lord, by perfect karma, I have enshrined the Shabad within my mind.

ਪੂਰੈ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

पूरै गिआनि धिआनि मैलु चुकाइआ ॥

Poorai giaani dhiaani mailu chukaaiaa ||

Through perfect spiritual wisdom and meditation, my filth has been washed away.

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਨਾਇਆ ॥

हरि सरि तीरथि जाणि मनूआ नाइआ ॥

Hari sari teerathi jaa(nn)i manooaa naaiaa ||

The Lord is my sacred shrine of pilgrimage and pool of purification; I wash my mind in Him.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

सबदि मरै मनु मारि धंनु जणेदी माइआ ॥

Sabadi marai manu maari dhannu ja(nn)edee maaiaa ||

One who dies in the Shabad and conquers his mind - blessed is the mother who gave birth to him.

ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਸਚਾ ਆਇਆ ॥

दरि सचै सचिआरु सचा आइआ ॥

Dari sachai sachiaaru sachaa aaiaa ||

He is true in the Court of the Lord, and his coming into this world is judged to be true.

ਪੁਛਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ਜਾਂ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

पुछि न सकै कोइ जां खसमै भाइआ ॥

Puchhi na sakai koi jaan khasamai bhaaiaa ||

No one can challenge that person, with whom our Lord and Master is pleased.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥

नानक सचु सलाहि लिखिआ पाइआ ॥१८॥

Naanak sachu salaahi likhiaa paaiaa ||18||

O Nanak, praising the True Lord, his pre-ordained destiny is activated. ||18||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਕੁਲਹਾਂ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਬਾਵਲੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਵਡੇ ਨਿਲਜ ॥

कुलहां देंदे बावले लैंदे वडे निलज ॥

Kulahaan dende baavale lainde vade nilaj ||

Those who give out ceremonial hats of recognition are fools; those who receive them have no shame.

ਚੂਹਾ ਖਡ ਨ ਮਾਵਈ ਤਿਕਲਿ ਬੰਨੑੈ ਛਜ ॥

चूहा खड न मावई तिकलि बंन्है छज ॥

Choohaa khad na maavaee tikali bannhai chhaj ||

The mouse cannot enter its hole with a basket tied around its waist.

ਦੇਨੑਿ ਦੁਆਈ ਸੇ ਮਰਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਦੇਨਿ ਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

देन्हि दुआई से मरहि जिन कउ देनि सि जाहि ॥

Denhi duaaee se marahi jin kau deni si jaahi ||

Those who give out blessings shall die, and those that they bless shall also depart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

नानक हुकमु न जापई किथै जाइ समाहि ॥

Naanak hukamu na jaapaee kithai jaai samaahi ||

O Nanak, no one knows the Lord's Command, by which all must depart.

ਫਸਲਿ ਅਹਾੜੀ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਵਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

फसलि अहाड़ी एकु नामु सावणी सचु नाउ ॥

Phasali ahaa(rr)ee eku naamu saava(nn)ee sachu naau ||

The spring harvest is the Name of the One Lord; the harvest of autumn is the True Name.

ਮੈ ਮਹਦੂਦੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

मै महदूदु लिखाइआ खसमै कै दरि जाइ ॥

Mai mahadoodu likhaaiaa khasamai kai dari jaai ||

I receive a letter of pardon from my Lord and Master, when I reach His Court.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੇ ਦਰ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ॥

दुनीआ के दर केतड़े केते आवहि जांहि ॥

Duneeaa ke dar keta(rr)e kete aavahi jaanhi ||

There are so many courts of the world, and so many who come and go there.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਗਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

केते मंगहि मंगते केते मंगि मंगि जाहि ॥१॥

Kete manggahi manggate kete manggi manggi jaahi ||1||

There are so many beggars begging; so many beg and beg until death. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

मः १ ॥

First Mehl:

ਸਉ ਮਣੁ ਹਸਤੀ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਪੰਜਿ ਸੈ ਦਾਣਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

सउ मणु हसती घिउ गुड़ु खावै पंजि सै दाणा खाइ ॥

Sau ma(nn)u hasatee ghiu gu(rr)u khaavai panjji sai daa(nn)aa khaai ||

The elephant eats a hundred pounds of ghee and molasses, and five hundred pounds of corn.

ਡਕੈ ਫੂਕੈ ਖੇਹ ਉਡਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿ ਗਇਐ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥

डकै फूकै खेह उडावै साहि गइऐ पछुताइ ॥

Dakai phookai kheh udaavai saahi gaiai pachhutaai ||

He belches and grunts and scatters dust, and when the breath leaves his body, he regrets it.

ਅੰਧੀ ਫੂਕਿ ਮੁਈ ਦੇਵਾਨੀ ॥

अंधी फूकि मुई देवानी ॥

Anddhee phooki muee devaanee ||

The blind and arrogant die insane.

ਖਸਮਿ ਮਿਟੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਭਾਨੀ ॥

खसमि मिटी फिरि भानी ॥

Khasami mitee phiri bhaanee ||

Submitting to the Lord, one become pleasing to Him.

ਅਧੁ ਗੁਲ੍ਹਾ ਚਿੜੀ ਕਾ ਚੁਗਣੁ ਗੈਣਿ ਚੜੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥

अधु गुल्हा चिड़ी का चुगणु गैणि चड़ी बिललाइ ॥

Adhu gulhaa chi(rr)ee kaa chuga(nn)u gai(nn)i cha(rr)ee bilalaai ||

The sparrow eats only half a grain, then it flies through the sky and chirps.

ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਓਹਾ ਚੰਗੀ ਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

खसमै भावै ओहा चंगी जि करे खुदाइ खुदाइ ॥

Khasamai bhaavai ohaa changgee ji kare khudaai khudaai ||

The good sparrow is pleasing to her Lord and Master, if she chirps the Name of the Lord.

ਸਕਤਾ ਸੀਹੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੈ ਮਿਰਿਆ ਸਭ ਪਿਛੈ ਪੈ ਖਾਇ ॥

सकता सीहु मारे सै मिरिआ सभ पिछै पै खाइ ॥

Sakataa seehu maare sai miriaa sabh pichhai pai khaai ||

The powerful tiger kills hundreds of deer, and all sorts of other animals eat what it leaves.

ਹੋਇ ਸਤਾਣਾ ਘੁਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿ ਗਇਐ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥

होइ सताणा घुरै न मावै साहि गइऐ पछुताइ ॥

Hoi sataa(nn)aa ghurai na maavai saahi gaiai pachhutaai ||

It becomes very strong, and cannot be contained in its den, but when it must go, it regrets.

ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਬੁਕਿ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

अंधा किस नो बुकि सुणावै ॥

Anddhaa kis no buki su(nn)aavai ||

So who is impressed by the roar of the blind beast?

ਖਸਮੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

खसमै मूलि न भावै ॥

Khasamai mooli na bhaavai ||

He is not pleasing at all to his Lord and Master.

ਅਕ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਕ ਤਿਡਾ ਅਕ ਡਾਲੀ ਬਹਿ ਖਾਇ ॥

अक सिउ प्रीति करे अक तिडा अक डाली बहि खाइ ॥

Ak siu preeti kare ak tidaa ak daalee bahi khaai ||

The insect loves the milkweed plant; perched on its branch, it eats it.

ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਓਹੋ ਚੰਗਾ ਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

खसमै भावै ओहो चंगा जि करे खुदाइ खुदाइ ॥

Khasamai bhaavai oho changgaa ji kare khudaai khudaai ||

It becomes good and pleasing to its Lord and Master, if it chirps the Name of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਚਾਰਿ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਕੀਤੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

नानक दुनीआ चारि दिहाड़े सुखि कीतै दुखु होई ॥

Naanak duneeaa chaari dihaa(rr)e sukhi keetai dukhu hoee ||

O Nanak, the world lasts for only a few days; indulging in pleasures, pain is produced.

ਗਲਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੈਨਿ ਘਣੇਰੇ ਛਡਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

गला वाले हैनि घणेरे छडि न सकै कोई ॥

Galaa vaale haini gha(nn)ere chhadi na sakai koee ||

There are many who boast and brag, but none of them can remain detached from the world.

ਮਖੀਂ ਮਿਠੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

मखीं मिठै मरणा ॥

Makheen mithai mara(nn)aa ||

The fly dies for the sake of sweets.

ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਰਖਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਨ ਭਉ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੨॥

जिन तू रखहि तिन नेड़ि न आवै तिन भउ सागरु तरणा ॥२॥

Jin too rakhahi tin ne(rr)i na aavai tin bhau saagaru tara(nn)aa ||2||

O Lord, death does not even approach those whom You protect. You carry them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

Pauree:

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਸਚਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

अगम अगोचरु तू धणी सचा अलख अपारु ॥

Agam agocharu too dha(nn)ee sachaa alakh apaaru ||

You are Inaccessible and Unfathomable, O Invisible and Infinite True Lord Master.

ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਇਕੋ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

तू दाता सभि मंगते इको देवणहारु ॥

Too daataa sabhi manggate iko deva(nn)ahaaru ||

You are the Giver, all are beggars of You. You alone are the Great Giver.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

जिनी सेविआ तिनी सुखु पाइआ गुरमती वीचारु ॥

Jinee seviaa tinee sukhu paaiaa guramatee veechaaru ||

Those who serve You find peace, reflecting on the Guru's Teachings.

ਇਕਨਾ ਨੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

इकना नो तुधु एवै भावदा माइआ नालि पिआरु ॥

Ikanaa no tudhu evai bhaavadaa maaiaa naali piaaru ||

Some, according to Your Will, are in love with Maya.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

गुर कै सबदि सलाहीऐ अंतरि प्रेम पिआरु ॥

Gur kai sabadi salaaheeai anttari prem piaaru ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, praise the Lord with love and affection within.

ਵਿਣੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

विणु प्रीती भगति न होवई विणु सतिगुर न लगै पिआरु ॥

Vi(nn)u preetee bhagati na hovaee vi(nn)u satigur na lagai piaaru ||

Without love, there is no devotion. Without the True Guru, love is not enshrined.

ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਇਕ ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

तू प्रभु सभि तुधु सेवदे इक ढाढी करे पुकार ॥

Too prbhu sabhi tudhu sevade ik dhaadhee kare pukaar ||

You are the Lord God; everyone serves You. This is the prayer of Your humble minstrel.

ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੧੯॥

देहि दानु संतोखीआ सचा नामु मिलै आधारु ॥१९॥

Dehi daanu santtokheeaa sachaa naamu milai aadhaaru ||19||

Please bless me with the gift of contentment, that I may receive the True Name as my Support. ||19||

ਰਾਤੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਘਟੈ ਦਿਨਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

राती कालु घटै दिनि कालु ॥

Raatee kaalu ghatai dini kaalu ||

Through the night the time ticks away; through the day the time ticks away.

ਛਿਜੈ ਕਾਇਆ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਾਲੁ ॥

छिजै काइआ होइ परालु ॥

Chhijai kaaiaa hoi paraalu ||

The body wears away and turns to straw.

ਵਰਤਣਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥

वरतणि वरतिआ सरब जंजालु ॥

Varata(nn)i varatiaa sarab janjjaalu ||

All are involved and entangled in worldly entanglements.

ਭੁਲਿਆ ਚੁਕਿ ਗਇਆ ਤਪ ਤਾਲੁ ॥

भुलिआ चुकि गइआ तप तालु ॥

Bhuliaa chuki gaiaa tap taalu ||

The mortal has mistakenly renounced the way of service.

ਅੰਧਾ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਪਇਆ ਝੇਰਿ ॥

अंधा झखि झखि पइआ झेरि ॥

Anddhaa jhakhi jhakhi paiaa jheri ||

The blind fool is caught in conflict, bothered and bewildered.

ਪਿਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਲਿਆਵਹਿ ਫੇਰਿ ॥

पिछै रोवहि लिआवहि फेरि ॥

Pichhai rovahi liaavahi pheri ||

Those who weep after someone has died - can they bring him back to life?

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

बिनु बूझे किछु सूझै नाही ॥

Binu boojhe kichhu soojhai naahee ||

Without realization, nothing can be understood.

ਮੋਇਆ ਰੋਂਹਿ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਂਹੀਂ ॥

मोइआ रोंहि रोंदे मरि जांहीं ॥

Moiaa ronhi ronde mari jaanheen ||

The weepers who weep for the dead shall themselves die as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

नानक खसमै एवै भावै ॥

Naanak khasamai evai bhaavai ||

O Nanak, this is the Will of our Lord and Master.

ਸੇਈ ਮੁਏ ਜਿਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥

सेई मुए जिन चिति न आवै ॥१॥

Seee mue jin chiti na aavai ||1||

Those who do not remember the Lord, are dead. ||1||

ਮੁਆ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮੁਈ ਮੁਆ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਾਦੀ ॥

मुआ पिआरु प्रीति मुई मुआ वैरु वादी ॥

Muaa piaaru preeti muee muaa vairu vaadee ||

Love dies, and affection dies; hatred and strife die.

ਵੰਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਰੂਪੁ ਵਿਣਸਿਆ ਦੁਖੀ ਦੇਹ ਰੁਲੀ ॥

वंनु गइआ रूपु विणसिआ दुखी देह रुली ॥

Vannu gaiaa roopu vi(nn)asiaa dukhee deh rulee ||

The color fades, and beauty vanishes; the body suffers and collapses.

ਕਿਥਹੁ ਆਇਆ ਕਹ ਗਇਆ ਕਿਹੁ ਨ ਸੀਓ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੀ ॥

किथहु आइआ कह गइआ किहु न सीओ किहु सी ॥

Kithahu aaiaa kah gaiaa kihu na seeo kihu see ||

Where did he come from? Where is he going? Did he exist or not?

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਗਲਾ ਗੋਈਆ ਕੀਤਾ ਚਾਉ ਰਲੀ ॥

मनि मुखि गला गोईआ कीता चाउ रली ॥

Mani mukhi galaa goeeaa keetaa chaau ralee ||

The self-willed manmukh made empty boasts, indulging in parties and pleasures.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ॥੨॥

नानक सचे नाम बिनु सिर खुर पति पाटी ॥२॥

Naanak sache naam binu sir khur pati paatee ||2||

O Nanak, without the True Name, his honor is torn away, from head to foot. ||2||

Pauree:

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

अम्रित नामु सदा सुखदाता अंते होइ सखाई ॥

Ammmrit naamu sadaa sukhadaataa antte hoi sakhaaee ||

The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is forever the Giver of peace. It shall be your Help and Support in the end.

ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਗਤੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

बाझु गुरू जगतु बउराना नावै सार न पाई ॥

Baajhu guroo jagatu bauraanaa naavai saar na paaee ||

Without the Guru, the world is insane. It does not appreciate the worth of the Name.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਿਨੑ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥

सतिगुरु सेवहि से परवाणु जिन्ह जोती जोति मिलाई ॥

Satiguru sevahi se paravaa(nn)u jinh jotee joti milaaee ||

Those who serve the True Guru are accepted and approved. Their light merges into the Light.

ਸੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥

सो साहिबु सो सेवकु तेहा जिसु भाणा मंनि वसाई ॥

So saahibu so sevaku tehaa jisu bhaa(nn)aa manni vasaaee ||

That servant who enshrines the Lord's Will within his mind, becomes just like his Lord and Master.

ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥

आपणै भाणै कहु किनि सुखु पाइआ अंधा अंधु कमाई ॥

Aapa(nn)ai bhaa(nn)ai kahu kini sukhu paaiaa anddhaa anddhu kamaaee ||

Tell me, who has ever found peace by following his own will? The blind act in blindness.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕਦੇ ਹੀ ਰਜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

बिखिआ कदे ही रजै नाही मूरख भुख न जाई ॥

Bikhiaa kade hee rajai naahee moorakh bhukh na jaaee ||

No one is ever satisfied and fulfilled by evil and corruption. The hunger of the fool is not satisfied.

ਦੂਜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਲਗਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

दूजै सभु को लगि विगुता बिनु सतिगुर बूझ न पाई ॥

Doojai sabhu ko lagi vigutaa binu satigur boojh na paaee ||

Attached to duality, all are ruined; without the True Guru, there is no understanding.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥

सतिगुरु सेवे सो सुखु पाए जिस नो किरपा करे रजाई ॥२०॥

Satiguru seve so sukhu paae jis no kirapaa kare rajaaee ||20||

Those who serve the True Guru find peace; they are blessed with Grace by the Will of the Lord. ||20||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोक मः १ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਰਮੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੇ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

सरमु धरमु दुइ नानका जे धनु पलै पाइ ॥

Saramu dharamu dui naanakaa je dhanu palai paai ||

Modesty and righteousness both, O Nanak, are qualities of those who are blessed with true wealth.

ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਨ ਕਾਂਢੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਇ ॥

सो धनु मित्रु न कांढीऐ जितु सिरि चोटां खाइ ॥

So dhanu mitru na kaandheeai jitu siri chotaan khaai ||

Do not refer to that wealth as your friend, which leads you to get your head beaten.

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪਲੈ ਧਨੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰ ॥

जिन कै पलै धनु वसै तिन का नाउ फकीर ॥

Jin kai palai dhanu vasai tin kaa naau phakeer ||

Those who possess only this worldly wealth are known as paupers.

ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੧॥

जिन्ह कै हिरदै तू वसहि ते नर गुणी गहीर ॥१॥

Jinh kai hiradai too vasahi te nar gu(nn)ee gaheer ||1||

But those, within whose hearts You dwell, O Lord - those people are oceans of virtue. ||1||

ਦੁਖੀ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਹੇੜੀਐ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥

दुखी दुनी सहेड़ीऐ जाइ त लगहि दुख ॥

Dukhee dunee sahe(rr)eeai jaai ta lagahi dukh ||

Worldly possessions are obtained by pain and suffering; when they are gone, they leave pain and suffering.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਲਥੀ ਭੁਖ ॥

नानक सचे नाम बिनु किसै न लथी भुख ॥

Naanak sache naam binu kisai na lathee bhukh ||

O Nanak, without the True Name, hunger is never satisfied.

ਰੂਪੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਾਂ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਖ ॥

रूपी भुख न उतरै जां देखां तां भुख ॥

Roopee bhukh na utarai jaan dekhaan taan bhukh ||

Beauty does not satisfy hunger; when the man sees beauty, he hungers even more.

ਜੇਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਤੇਤੇ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥੨॥

जेते रस सरीर के तेते लगहि दुख ॥२॥

Jete ras sareer ke tete lagahi dukh ||2||

As many as are the pleasures of the body, so many are the pains which afflict it. ||2||

ਅੰਧੀ ਕੰਮੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਅੰਧੁ ॥

अंधी कमी अंधु मनु मनि अंधै तनु अंधु ॥

Anddhee kammee anddhu manu mani anddhai tanu anddhu ||

Acting blindly, the mind becomes blind. The blind mind makes the body blind.

ਚਿਕੜਿ ਲਾਇਐ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਐ ਜਾਂ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਥਰ ਬੰਧੁ ॥

चिकड़ि लाइऐ किआ थीऐ जां तुटै पथर बंधु ॥

Chika(rr)i laaiai kiaa theeai jaan tutai pathar banddhu ||

Why make a dam with mud and plaster? Even a dam made of stones gives way.

ਬੰਧੁ ਤੁਟਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਨਾ ਹਾਥ ॥

बंधु तुटा बेड़ी नही ना तुलहा ना हाथ ॥

Banddhu tutaa be(rr)ee nahee naa tulahaa naa haath ||

The dam has burst. There is no boat. There is no raft. The water's depth is unfathomable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੇਤੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਸਾਥ ॥੩॥

नानक सचे नाम विणु केते डुबे साथ ॥३॥

Naanak sache naam vi(nn)u kete dube saath ||3||

O Nanak, without the True Name, many multitudes have drowned. ||3||

ਲਖ ਮਣ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਲਖ ਮਣ ਰੁਪਾ ਲਖ ਸਾਹਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹ ॥

लख मण सुइना लख मण रुपा लख साहा सिरि साह ॥

Lakh ma(nn) suinaa lakh ma(nn) rupaa lakh saahaa siri saah ||

Thousands of pounds of gold, and thousands of pounds of silver; the king over the heads of thousands of kings.

ਲਖ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਵਾਜੇ ਨੇਜੇ ਲਖੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥

लख लसकर लख वाजे नेजे लखी घोड़ी पातिसाह ॥

Lakh lasakar lakh vaaje neje lakhee gho(rr)ee paatisaah ||

Thousands of armies, thousands of marching bands and spearmen; the emperor of thousands of horsemen.

ਜਿਥੈ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥

जिथै साइरु लंघणा अगनि पाणी असगाह ॥

Jithai saairu langgha(nn)aa agani paa(nn)ee asagaah ||

The unfathomable ocean of fire and water must be crossed.

ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਧਾਹੀ ਪਵੈ ਕਹਾਹ ॥

कंधी दिसि न आवई धाही पवै कहाह ॥

Kanddhee disi na aavaee dhaahee pavai kahaah ||

The other shore cannot be seen; only the roar of pitiful cries can be heard.

ਨਾਨਕ ਓਥੈ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਸਾਹ ਕੇਈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥੪॥

नानक ओथै जाणीअहि साह केई पातिसाह ॥४॥

Naanak othai jaa(nn)eeahi saah keee paatisaah ||4||

O Nanak, there, it shall be known, whether anyone is a king or an emperor. ||4||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਗਲੀਂ ਜੰਜੀਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥

इकन्हा गलीं जंजीर बंदि रबाणीऐ ॥

Ikanhaa galeen janjjeer banddi rabaa(nn)eeai ||

Some have chains around their necks, in bondage to the Lord.

ਬਧੇ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥

बधे छुटहि सचि सचु पछाणीऐ ॥

Badhe chhutahi sachi sachu pachhaa(nn)eeai ||

They are released from bondage, realizing the True Lord as True.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

लिखिआ पलै पाइ सो सचु जाणीऐ ॥

Likhiaa palai paai so sachu jaa(nn)eeai ||

One whose pre-ordained destiny is activated, comes to know the True Lord.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

हुकमी होइ निबेड़ु गइआ जाणीऐ ॥

Hukamee hoi nibe(rr)u gaiaa jaa(nn)eeai ||

By God's Command, it is ordained. When the mortal goes, he knows.

ਭਉਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥

भउजल तारणहारु सबदि पछाणीऐ ॥

Bhaujal taara(nn)ahaaru sabadi pachhaa(nn)eeai ||

Realize the Word of the Shabad, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਚੋਰ ਜਾਰ ਜੂਆਰ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀਐ ॥

चोर जार जूआर पीड़े घाणीऐ ॥

Chor jaar jooaar pee(rr)e ghaa(nn)eeai ||

Thieves, adulterers and gamblers are pressed like seeds in the mill.

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਵਾਣੀਐ ॥

निंदक लाइतबार मिले हड़्हवाणीऐ ॥

Ninddak laaitabaar mile ha(rr)hvaa(nn)eeai ||

Slanderers and gossipers are hand-cuffed.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੧॥

गुरमुखि सचि समाइ सु दरगह जाणीऐ ॥२१॥

Guramukhi sachi samaai su daragah jaa(nn)eeai ||21||

The Gurmukh is absorbed in the True Lord, and is famous in the Court of the Lord. ||21||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Salok M: 2 ||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰੈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਮੂਰਖ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

नाउ फकीरै पातिसाहु मूरख पंडितु नाउ ॥

Naau phakeerai paatisaahu moorakh pandditu naau ||

The beggar is known as an emperor, and the fool is known as a religious scholar.

ਅੰਧੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਏਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਆਉ ॥

अंधे का नाउ पारखू एवै करे गुआउ ॥

Anddhe kaa naau paarakhoo evai kare guaau ||

The blind man is known as a seer; this is how people talk.

ਇਲਤਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਚਉਧਰੀ ਕੂੜੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਥਾਉ ॥

इलति का नाउ चउधरी कूड़ी पूरे थाउ ॥

Ilati kaa naau chaudharee koo(rr)ee poore thaau ||

The trouble-maker is called a leader, and the liar is seated with honor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਆਉ ॥੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि जाणीऐ कलि का एहु निआउ ॥१॥

Naanak guramukhi jaa(nn)eeai kali kaa ehu niaau ||1||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs know that this is justice in the Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||1||

ਹਰਣਾਂ ਬਾਜਾਂ ਤੈ ਸਿਕਦਾਰਾਂ ਏਨੑਾ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਨਾਉ ॥

हरणां बाजां तै सिकदारां एन्हा पड़्हिआ नाउ ॥

Hara(nn)aan baajaan tai sikadaaraan enhaa pa(rr)hiaa naau ||

Deer, falcons and government officials are known to be trained and clever.

ਫਾਂਧੀ ਲਗੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਫਹਾਇਨਿ ਅਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥

फांधी लगी जाति फहाइनि अगै नाही थाउ ॥

Phaandhee lagee jaati phahaaini agai naahee thaau ||

When the trap is set, they trap their own kind; hereafter they will find no place of rest.

ਸੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

सो पड़िआ सो पंडितु बीना जिन्ही कमाणा नाउ ॥

So pa(rr)iaa so pandditu beenaa jinhee kamaa(nn)aa naau ||

He alone is learned and wise, and he alone is a scholar, who practices the Name.

ਪਹਿਲੋ ਦੇ ਜੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਤਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਛਾਂਉ ॥

पहिलो दे जड़ अंदरि जमै ता उपरि होवै छांउ ॥

Pahilo de ja(rr) anddari jammai taa upari hovai chhaanu ||

First, the tree puts down its roots, and then it spreads out its shade above.

ਰਾਜੇ ਸੀਹ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਕੁਤੇ ॥

राजे सीह मुकदम कुते ॥

Raaje seeh mukadam kute ||

The kings are tigers, and their officials are dogs;

ਜਾਇ ਜਗਾਇਨੑਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਸੁਤੇ ॥

जाइ जगाइन्हि बैठे सुते ॥

Jaai jagaainhi baithe sute ||

They go out and awaken the sleeping people to harass them.

ਚਾਕਰ ਨਹਦਾ ਪਾਇਨੑਿ ਘਾਉ ॥

चाकर नहदा पाइन्हि घाउ ॥

Chaakar nahadaa paainhi ghaau ||

The public servants inflict wounds with their nails.

ਰਤੁ ਪਿਤੁ ਕੁਤਿਹੋ ਚਟਿ ਜਾਹੁ ॥

रतु पितु कुतिहो चटि जाहु ॥

Ratu pitu kutiho chati jaahu ||

The dogs lick up the blood that is spilled.

ਜਿਥੈ ਜੀਆਂ ਹੋਸੀ ਸਾਰ ॥

जिथै जीआं होसी सार ॥

Jithai jeeaan hosee saar ||

But there, in the Court of the Lord, all beings will be judged.

ਨਕੀਂ ਵਢੀਂ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ॥੨॥

नकीं वढीं लाइतबार ॥२॥

Nakeen vadheen laaitabaar ||2||

Those who have violated the people's trust will be disgraced; their noses will be cut off. ||2||

Pauree:

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਸਾਰ ॥

आपि उपाए मेदनी आपे करदा सार ॥

Aapi upaae medanee aape karadaa saar ||

He Himself creates the world, and He himself takes care of it.

ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਕਟੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

भै बिनु भरमु न कटीऐ नामि न लगै पिआरु ॥

Bhai binu bharamu na kateeai naami na lagai piaaru ||

Without the Fear of God, doubt is not dispelled, and love for the Name is not embraced.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

सतिगुर ते भउ ऊपजै पाईऐ मोख दुआर ॥

Satigur te bhau upajai paaeeai mokh duaar ||

Through the True Guru, the Fear of God wells up, and the Door of Salvation is found.

ਭੈ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

भै ते सहजु पाईऐ मिलि जोती जोति अपार ॥

Bhai te sahaju paaeeai mili jotee joti apaar ||

Through the Fear of God, intuitive ease is obtained, and one's light merges into the Light of the Infinite.

ਭੈ ਤੇ ਭੈਜਲੁ ਲੰਘੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

भै ते भैजलु लंघीऐ गुरमती वीचारु ॥

Bhai te bhaijalu langgheeai guramatee veechaaru ||

Through the Fear of God, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over, reflecting on the Guru's Teachings.

ਭੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

भै ते निरभउ पाईऐ जिस दा अंतु न पारावारु ॥

Bhai te nirabhau paaeeai jis daa anttu na paaraavaaru ||

Through the Fear of God, the Fearless Lord is found; He has no end or limitation.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

मनमुख भै की सार न जाणनी त्रिसना जलते करहि पुकार ॥

Manamukh bhai kee saar na jaa(nn)anee trisanaa jalate karahi pukaar ||

The self-willed manmukhs do not appreciate the value of the Fear of God. Burning in desire, they weep and wail.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰ ॥੨੨॥

नानक नावै ही ते सुखु पाइआ गुरमती उरि धार ॥२२॥

Naanak naavai hee te sukhu paaiaa guramatee uri dhaar ||22||

O Nanak, through the Name, peace is obtained, by enshrining the Guru's Teachings within the heart. ||22||

ਰੂਪੈ ਕਾਮੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੁਖੈ ਸਾਦੈ ਗੰਢੁ ॥

रूपै कामै दोसती भुखै सादै गंढु ॥

Roopai kaamai dosatee bhukhai saadai ganddhu ||

Beauty and sexual desire are friends; hunger and tasty food are tied together.

ਲਬੈ ਮਾਲੈ ਘੁਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਚਲਿ ਊਂਘੈ ਸਉੜਿ ਪਲੰਘੁ ॥

लबै मालै घुलि मिलि मिचलि ऊंघै सउड़ि पलंघु ॥

Labai maalai ghuli mili michali unghai sau(rr)i palangghu ||

Greed is bound up in its search for wealth, and sleep will use even a tiny space as a bed.

ਭੰਉਕੈ ਕੋਪੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਫਕੜੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਅੰਧੁ ॥

भंउकै कोपु खुआरु होइ फकड़ु पिटे अंधु ॥

Bhannukai kopu khuaaru hoi phaka(rr)u pite anddhu ||

Anger barks and brings ruin on itself, blindly pursuing useless conflicts.

ਚੁਪੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਗੰਧੁ ॥੧॥

चुपै चंगा नानका विणु नावै मुहि गंधु ॥१॥

Chupai changgaa naanakaa vi(nn)u naavai muhi ganddhu ||1||

It is good to be silent, O Nanak; without the Name, one's mouth spews forth only filth. ||1||

ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਪੰਜੇ ਠਗ ॥

राजु मालु रूपु जाति जोबनु पंजे ठग ॥

Raaju maalu roopu jaati jobanu panjje thag ||

Royal power, wealth, beauty, social status and youth are the five thieves.

ਏਨੀ ਠਗੀਂ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਰਖੀ ਲਜ ॥

एनी ठगीं जगु ठगिआ किनै न रखी लज ॥

Enee thageen jagu thagiaa kinai na rakhee laj ||

These thieves have plundered the world; no one's honor has been spared.

ਏਨਾ ਠਗਨੑਿ ਠਗ ਸੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

एना ठगन्हि ठग से जि गुर की पैरी पाहि ॥

Enaa thaganhi thag se ji gur kee pairee paahi ||

But these thieves themselves are robbed, by those who fall at the Guru's Feet.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਠੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

नानक करमा बाहरे होरि केते मुठे जाहि ॥२॥

Naanak karamaa baahare hori kete muthe jaahi ||2||

O Nanak, the multitudes who do not have good karma are plundered. ||2||

Pa(rr)iaa lekhedaaru lekhaa manggeeai ||

The learned and educated are called to account for their actions.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਅਉਖਾ ਤੰਗੀਐ ॥

विणु नावै कूड़िआरु अउखा तंगीऐ ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai koo(rr)iaaru aukhaa tanggeeai ||

Without the Name, they are judged false; they become miserable and suffer hardship.

ਅਉਘਟ ਰੁਧੇ ਰਾਹ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਰੋਕੀਆਂ ॥

अउघट रुधे राह गलीआं रोकीआं ॥

Aughat rudhe raah galeeaan rokeeaan ||

Their path becomes treacherous and difficult, and their way is blocked.

ਸਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ॥

सचा वेपरवाहु सबदि संतोखीआं ॥

Sachaa veparavaahu sabadi santtokheeaan ||

Through the Shabad, the Word of the True and Independent Lord God, one becomes content.

ਗਹਿਰ ਗਭੀਰ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ॥

गहिर गभीर अथाहु हाथ न लभई ॥

Gahir gabheer athaahu haath na labhaee ||

The Lord is deep and profound and unfathomable; His depth cannot be measured.

ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ॥

मुहे मुहि चोटा खाहु विणु गुर कोइ न छुटसी ॥

Muhe muhi chotaa khaahu vi(nn)u gur koi na chhutasee ||

Without the Guru, the mortals are beaten and punched in the face and the mouth, and no one is released.

ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥

पति सेती घरि जाहु नामु वखाणीऐ ॥

Pati setee ghari jaahu naamu vakhaa(nn)eeai ||

Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one returns to his true home with honor.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਹ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੩॥

हुकमी साह गिराह देंदा जाणीऐ ॥२३॥

Hukamee saah giraah dendaa jaa(nn)eeai ||23||

Know that the Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, gives sustenance and the breath of life. ||23||

ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਪੀੜ ॥

पउणै पाणी अगनी जीउ तिन किआ खुसीआ किआ पीड़ ॥

Pau(nn)ai paa(nn)ee aganee jeeu tin kiaa khuseeaa kiaa pee(rr) ||

Living beings are formed of air, water and fire. They are subject to pleasure and pain.

ਧਰਤੀ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸੀ ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਰਹਨਿ ਵਜੀਰ ॥

धरती पाताली आकासी इकि दरि रहनि वजीर ॥

Dharatee paataalee aakaasee iki dari rahani vajeer ||

In this world, in the nether regions of the underworld, and in the Akaashic ethers of the heavens, some remain ministers in the Court of the Lord.

ਇਕਨਾ ਵਡੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਇਕਿ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਜਹੀਰ ॥

इकना वडी आरजा इकि मरि होहि जहीर ॥

Ikanaa vadee aarajaa iki mari hohi jaheer ||

Some live long lives, while others suffer and die.

ਇਕਿ ਦੇ ਖਾਹਿ ਨਿਖੁਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਇਕਿ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਫਕੀਰ ॥

इकि दे खाहि निखुटै नाही इकि सदा फिरहि फकीर ॥

Iki de khaahi nikhutai naahee iki sadaa phirahi phakeer ||

Some give and consume, and still their wealth is not exhausted, while others remain poor forever.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਜੇ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਾਹੇ ਏਕ ਚਸੇ ਮਹਿ ਲਖ ॥

हुकमी साजे हुकमी ढाहे एक चसे महि लख ॥

Hukamee saaje hukamee dhaahe ek chase mahi lakh ||

In His Will He creates, and in His Will He destroys thousands in an instant.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਨਥੈ ਨਥਿਆ ਬਖਸੇ ਤੋੜੇ ਨਥ ॥

सभु को नथै नथिआ बखसे तोड़े नथ ॥

Sabhu ko nathai nathiaa bakhase to(rr)e nath ||

He has harnessed everyone with His harness; when He forgives, he breaks the harness.

ਵਰਨਾ ਚਿਹਨਾ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਲੇਖੇ ਬਾਝੁ ਅਲਖੁ ॥

वरना चिहना बाहरा लेखे बाझु अलखु ॥

Varanaa chihanaa baaharaa lekhe baajhu alakhu ||

He has no color or features; He is invisible and beyond calculation.

ਕਿਉ ਕਥੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ॥

किउ कथीऐ किउ आखीऐ जापै सचो सचु ॥

Kiu katheeai kiu aakheeai jaapai sacho sachu ||

How can He be described? He is known as the Truest of the True.

ਕਰਣਾ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਾਰ ਸਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਅਕਥੁ ॥

करणा कथना कार सभ नानक आपि अकथु ॥

Kara(nn)aa kathanaa kaar sabh naanak aapi akathu ||

All the actions which are done and described, O Nanak, are done by the Indescribable Lord Himself.

ਅਕਥ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣੇਇ ॥

अकथ की कथा सुणेइ ॥

Akath kee kathaa su(nn)ei ||

Whoever hears the description of the indescribable,

ਰਿਧਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

रिधि बुधि सिधि गिआनु सदा सुखु होइ ॥१॥

Ridhi budhi sidhi giaanu sadaa sukhu hoi ||1||

Is blessed with wealth, intelligence, perfection, spiritual wisdom and eternal peace. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

First Mehl:

ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰੈ ਤ ਨਉ ਕੁਲ ਬੰਧੁ ॥

अजरु जरै त नउ कुल बंधु ॥

Ajaru jarai ta nau kul banddhu ||

One who bears the unbearable, controls the nine holes of the body.

ਪੂਜੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੰਧੁ ॥

पूजै प्राण होवै थिरु कंधु ॥

Poojai praa(nn) hovai thiru kanddhu ||

One who worships and adores the Lord with his breath of life, gains stability in his body-wall.

ਕਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਕਹਾਂ ਏਹੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

कहां ते आइआ कहां एहु जाणु ॥

Kahaan te aaiaa kahaan ehu jaa(nn)u ||

Where has he come from, and where will he go?

ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਤ ਰਹੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

जीवत मरत रहै परवाणु ॥

Jeevat marat rahai paravaa(nn)u ||

Remaining dead while yet alive, he is accepted and approved.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

हुकमै बूझै ततु पछाणै ॥

Hukamai boojhai tatu pachhaa(nn)ai ||

Whoever understands the Hukam of the Lord's Command, realizes the essence of reality.

ਇਹੁ ਪਰਸਾਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

इहु परसादु गुरू ते जाणै ॥

Ihu parasaadu guroo te jaa(nn)ai ||

This is known by Guru's Grace.

ਹੋਂਦਾ ਫੜੀਅਗੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

होंदा फड़ीअगु नानक जाणु ॥

Hondaa pha(rr)eeagu naanak jaa(nn)u ||

O Nanak, know this: egotism leads to bondage.

ਨਾ ਹਉ ਨਾ ਮੈ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

ना हउ ना मै जूनी पाणु ॥२॥

Naa hau naa mai joonee paa(nn)u ||2||

Only those who have no ego and no self-conceit, are not consigned to reincarnation. ||2||

Pa(rr)heeai naamu saalaah hori budheen mithiaa ||

Read the Praise of the Lord's Name; other intellectual pursuits are false.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਚੇ ਵਾਪਾਰ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਿਆ ॥

बिनु सचे वापार जनमु बिरथिआ ॥

Binu sache vaapaar janamu birathiaa ||

Without dealing in Truth, life is worthless.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

अंतु न पारावारु न किन ही पाइआ ॥

Anttu na paaraavaaru na kin hee paaiaa ||

No one has ever found the Lord's end or limitation.

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਗਰਬਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

सभु जगु गरबि गुबारु तिन सचु न भाइआ ॥

Sabhu jagu garabi gubaaru tin sachu na bhaaiaa ||

All the world is enveloped by the darkness of egotistical pride. It does not like the Truth.

ਚਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਤਾਵਣਿ ਤਤਿਆ ॥

चले नामु विसारि तावणि ततिआ ॥

Chale naamu visaari taava(nn)i tatiaa ||

Those who depart from this world, forgetting the Naam, shall be roasted in the frying pan.

ਬਲਦੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤੇਲੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਘਤਿਆ ॥

बलदी अंदरि तेलु दुबिधा घतिआ ॥

Baladee anddari telu dubidhaa ghatiaa ||

They pour the oil of duality within, and burn.

ਆਇਆ ਉਠੀ ਖੇਲੁ ਫਿਰੈ ਉਵਤਿਆ ॥

आइआ उठी खेलु फिरै उवतिआ ॥

Aaiaa uthee khelu phirai uvatiaa ||

They come into the world and wander around aimlessly; they depart when the play is finished.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੈ ਮੇਲੁ ਸਚੈ ਰਤਿਆ ॥੨੪॥

नानक सचै मेलु सचै रतिआ ॥२४॥

Naanak sachai melu sachai ratiaa ||24||

O Nanak, imbued with Truth, the mortals merge in Truth. ||24||

Pahilaan maasahu nimmmiaa maasai anddari vaasu ||

First, the mortal is conceived in the flesh, and then he dwells in the flesh.

ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇ ਮਾਸੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਡੁ ਚੰਮੁ ਤਨੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

जीउ पाइ मासु मुहि मिलिआ हडु चमु तनु मासु ॥

Jeeu paai maasu muhi miliaa hadu chammu tanu maasu ||

When he comes alive, his mouth takes flesh; his bones, skin and body are flesh.

ਮਾਸਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਢਿਆ ਮੰਮਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਗਿਰਾਸੁ ॥

मासहु बाहरि कढिआ ममा मासु गिरासु ॥

Maasahu baahari kadhiaa mammaa maasu giraasu ||

He comes out of the womb of flesh, and takes a mouthful of flesh at the breast.

ਮੁਹੁ ਮਾਸੈ ਕਾ ਜੀਭ ਮਾਸੈ ਕੀ ਮਾਸੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਸੁ ॥

मुहु मासै का जीभ मासै की मासै अंदरि सासु ॥

Muhu maasai kaa jeebh maasai kee maasai anddari saasu ||

His mouth is flesh, his tongue is flesh; his breath is in the flesh.

ਵਡਾ ਹੋਆ ਵੀਆਹਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

वडा होआ वीआहिआ घरि लै आइआ मासु ॥

Vadaa hoaa veeaahiaa ghari lai aaiaa maasu ||

He grows up and is married, and brings his wife of flesh into his home.

ਮਾਸਹੁ ਹੀ ਮਾਸੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਸਭੋ ਸਾਕੁ ॥

मासहु ही मासु ऊपजै मासहु सभो साकु ॥

Maasahu hee maasu upajai maasahu sabho saaku ||

Flesh is produced from flesh; all relatives are made of flesh.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

सतिगुरि मिलिऐ हुकमु बुझीऐ तां को आवै रासि ॥

Satiguri miliai hukamu bujheeai taan ko aavai raasi ||

When the mortal meets the True Guru, and realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command, then he comes to be reformed.

ਆਪਿ ਛੁਟੇ ਨਹ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਚਨਿ ਬਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

आपि छुटे नह छूटीऐ नानक बचनि बिणासु ॥१॥

Aapi chhute nah chhooteeai naanak bachani bi(nn)aasu ||1||

Releasing himself, the mortal does not find release; O Nanak, through empty words, one is ruined. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਮਾਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਝਗੜੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

मासु मासु करि मूरखु झगड़े गिआनु धिआनु नही जाणै ॥

Maasu maasu kari moorakhu jhaga(rr)e giaanu dhiaanu nahee jaa(nn)ai ||

The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom.

ਕਉਣੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਸਾਗੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥

कउणु मासु कउणु सागु कहावै किसु महि पाप समाणे ॥

Kau(nn)u maasu kau(nn)u saagu kahaavai kisu mahi paap samaa(nn)e ||

What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin?

ਗੈਂਡਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਕੀਏ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੇ ॥

गैंडा मारि होम जग कीए देवतिआ की बाणे ॥

Gaindaa maari hom jag keee devatiaa kee baa(nn)e ||

It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering.

ਮਾਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਨਕੁ ਪਕੜਹਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ॥

मासु छोडि बैसि नकु पकड़हि राती माणस खाणे ॥

Maasu chhodi baisi naku paka(rr)ahi raatee maa(nn)as khaa(nn)e ||

Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night.

ਫੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੋ ਦਿਖਲਾਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

फड़ु करि लोकां नो दिखलावहि गिआनु धिआनु नही सूझै ॥

Pha(rr)u kari lokaan no dikhalaavahi giaanu dhiaanu nahee soojhai ||

They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

नानक अंधे सिउ किआ कहीऐ कहै न कहिआ बूझै ॥

Naanak anddhe siu kiaa kaheeai kahai na kahiaa boojhai ||

O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said.

ਅੰਧਾ ਸੋਇ ਜਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਿ ਲੋਚਨ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

अंधा सोइ जि अंधु कमावै तिसु रिदै सि लोचन नाही ॥

Anddhaa soi ji anddhu kamaavai tisu ridai si lochan naahee ||

They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕੀ ਰਕਤੁ ਨਿਪੰਨੇ ਮਛੀ ਮਾਸੁ ਨ ਖਾਂਹੀ ॥

मात पिता की रकतु निपंने मछी मासु न खांही ॥

Maat pitaa kee rakatu nipanne machhee maasu na khaanhee ||

They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat.

ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਿਸਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਓਥੈ ਮੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥

इसत्री पुरखै जां निसि मेला ओथै मंधु कमाही ॥

Isatree purakhai jaan nisi melaa othai manddhu kamaahee ||

But when men and women meet in the night, they come together in the flesh.

ਮਾਸਹੁ ਨਿੰਮੇ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਹਮ ਮਾਸੈ ਕੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ॥

मासहु निमे मासहु जमे हम मासै के भांडे ॥

Maasahu nimmme maasahu jamme ham maasai ke bhaande ||

In the flesh we are conceived, and in the flesh we are born; we are vessels of flesh.

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਪਾਂਡੇ ॥

गिआनु धिआनु कछु सूझै नाही चतुरु कहावै पांडे ॥

Giaanu dhiaanu kachhu soojhai naahee chaturu kahaavai paande ||

You know nothing of spiritual wisdom and meditation, even though you call yourself clever, O religious scholar.

ਬਾਹਰ ਕਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਮੰਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਘਰ ਕਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਚੰਗੇਰਾ ॥

बाहर का मासु मंदा सुआमी घर का मासु चंगेरा ॥

Baahar kaa maasu manddaa suaamee ghar kaa maasu changgeraa ||

O master, you believe that flesh on the outside is bad, but the flesh of those in your own home is good.

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਇ ਲਇਆ ਵਾਸੇਰਾ ॥

जीअ जंत सभि मासहु होए जीइ लइआ वासेरा ॥

Jeea jantt sabhi maasahu hoe jeei laiaa vaaseraa ||

All beings and creatures are flesh; the soul has taken up its home in the flesh.

ਅਭਖੁ ਭਖਹਿ ਭਖੁ ਤਜਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨ ਕੇਰਾ ॥

अभखु भखहि भखु तजि छोडहि अंधु गुरू जिन केरा ॥

Abhakhu bhakhahi bhakhu taji chhodahi anddhu guroo jin keraa ||

They eat the uneatable; they reject and abandon what they could eat. They have a teacher who is blind.

ਮਾਸਹੁ ਨਿੰਮੇ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਹਮ ਮਾਸੈ ਕੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ॥

मासहु निमे मासहु जमे हम मासै के भांडे ॥

Maasahu nimmme maasahu jamme ham maasai ke bhaande ||

In the flesh we are conceived, and in the flesh we are born; we are vessels of flesh.

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਪਾਂਡੇ ॥

गिआनु धिआनु कछु सूझै नाही चतुरु कहावै पांडे ॥

Giaanu dhiaanu kachhu soojhai naahee chaturu kahaavai paande ||

You know nothing of spiritual wisdom and meditation, even though you call yourself clever, O religious scholar.

ਮਾਸੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਤੇਬੀਂ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗਿ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥

मासु पुराणी मासु कतेबीं चहु जुगि मासु कमाणा ॥

Maasu puraa(nn)ee maasu katebeen chahu jugi maasu kamaa(nn)aa ||

Meat is allowed in the Puraanas, meat is allowed in the Bible and the Koran. Throughout the four ages, meat has been used.

ਜਜਿ ਕਾਜਿ ਵੀਆਹਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ਓਥੈ ਮਾਸੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥

जजि काजि वीआहि सुहावै ओथै मासु समाणा ॥

Jaji kaaji veeaahi suhaavai othai maasu samaa(nn)aa ||

It is featured in sacred feasts and marriage festivities; meat is used in them.

ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਪਜਹਿ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਸੁਲਤਾਨਾਂ ॥

इसत्री पुरख निपजहि मासहु पातिसाह सुलतानां ॥

Isatree purakh nipajahi maasahu paatisaah sulataanaan ||

Women, men, kings and emperors originate from meat.

ਜੇ ਓਇ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਨੑ ਕਾ ਦਾਨੁ ਨ ਲੈਣਾ ॥

जे ओइ दिसहि नरकि जांदे तां उन्ह का दानु न लैणा ॥

Je oi disahi naraki jaande taan unh kaa daanu na lai(nn)aa ||

If you see them going to hell, then do not accept charitable gifts from them.

ਦੇਂਦਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਲੈਦੇ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਿਙਾਣਾ ॥

देंदा नरकि सुरगि लैदे देखहु एहु धिङाणा ॥

Dendaa naraki suragi laide dekhahu ehu dhi(ng)aa(nn)aa ||

The giver goes to hell, while the receiver goes to heaven - look at this injustice.

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਪਾਂਡੇ ਖਰਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

आपि न बूझै लोक बुझाए पांडे खरा सिआणा ॥

Aapi na boojhai lok bujhaae paande kharaa siaa(nn)aa ||

You do not understand your own self, but you preach to other people. O Pandit, you are very wise indeed.

ਪਾਂਡੇ ਤੂ ਜਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਉਪੰਨਾ ॥

पांडे तू जाणै ही नाही किथहु मासु उपंना ॥

Paande too jaa(nn)ai hee naahee kithahu maasu upannaa ||

O Pandit, you do not know where meat originated.

ਤੋਇਅਹੁ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾਂ ਤੋਇਅਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਗੰਨਾ ॥

तोइअहु अंनु कमादु कपाहां तोइअहु त्रिभवणु गंना ॥

Toiahu annu kamaadu kapaahaan toiahu tribhava(nn)u gannaa ||

Corn, sugar cane and cotton are produced from water. The three worlds came from water.

ਤੋਆ ਆਖੈ ਹਉ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਛਾ ਤੋਐ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥

तोआ आखै हउ बहु बिधि हछा तोऐ बहुतु बिकारा ॥

Toaa aakhai hau bahu bidhi hachhaa toai bahutu bikaaraa ||

Water says, ""I am good in many ways."" But water takes many forms.

ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਛੋਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

एते रस छोडि होवै संनिआसी नानकु कहै विचारा ॥२॥

Ete ras chhodi hovai sanniaasee naanaku kahai vichaaraa ||2||

Forsaking these delicacies, one becomes a true Sannyaasee, a detached hermit. Nanak reflects and speaks. ||2||

ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਾ ਇਕ ਜੀਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हउ किआ आखा इक जीभ तेरा अंतु न किन ही पाइआ ॥

Hau kiaa aakhaa ik jeebh teraa anttu na kin hee paaiaa ||

What can I say with only one tongue? I cannot find your limits.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਸੇ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

सचा सबदु वीचारि से तुझ ही माहि समाइआ ॥

Sachaa sabadu veechaari se tujh hee maahi samaaiaa ||

Those who contemplate the True Word of the Shabad are absorbed into You, O Lord.

ਇਕਿ ਭਗਵਾ ਵੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

इकि भगवा वेसु करि भरमदे विणु सतिगुर किनै न पाइआ ॥

Iki bhagavaa vesu kari bharamade vi(nn)u satigur kinai na paaiaa ||

Some wander around in saffron robes, but without the True Guru, no one finds the Lord.

ਦੇਸ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

देस दिसंतर भवि थके तुधु अंदरि आपु लुकाइआ ॥

Des disanttar bhavi thake tudhu anddari aapu lukaaiaa ||

They wander in foreign lands and countries until they grow weary, but You hide Yourself within them.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਤੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

गुर का सबदु रतंनु है करि चानणु आपि दिखाइआ ॥

Gur kaa sabadu ratannu hai kari chaana(nn)u aapi dikhaaiaa ||

The Word of the Guru's Shabad is a jewel, through which the Lord shines forth and reveals Himself.

ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

आपणा आपु पछाणिआ गुरमती सचि समाइआ ॥

Aapa(nn)aa aapu pachhaa(nn)iaa guramatee sachi samaaiaa ||

Realizing one's own self, following the Guru's Teachings, the mortal is absorbed into Truth.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਬਜਾਰੀਆ ਬਾਜਾਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥

आवा गउणु बजारीआ बाजारु जिनी रचाइआ ॥

Aavaa gau(nn)u bajaareeaa baajaaru jinee rachaaiaa ||

Coming and going, the tricksters and magicians put on their magic show.

ਇਕੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੫॥

इकु थिरु सचा सालाहणा जिन मनि सचा भाइआ ॥२५॥

Iku thiru sachaa saalaaha(nn)aa jin mani sachaa bhaaiaa ||25||

But those whose minds are pleased by the True Lord, praise the True One, the Ever-stable Lord. ||25||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਫਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲ ਵਿਸੁ ॥

नानक माइआ करम बिरखु फल अम्रित फल विसु ॥

Naanak maaiaa karam birakhu phal ammmrit phal visu ||

O Nanak, the tree of actions done in Maya yields ambrosial fruit and poisonous fruit.

ਸਭ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੧॥

सभ कारण करता करे जिसु खवाले तिसु ॥१॥

Sabh kaara(nn) karataa kare jisu khavaale tisu ||1||

The Creator does all deeds; we eat the fruits as He ordains. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਅਗੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲਿ ॥

नानक दुनीआ कीआं वडिआईआं अगी सेती जालि ॥

Naanak duneeaa keeaan vadiaaeeaan agee setee jaali ||

O Nanak, burn worldly greatness and glory in the fire.

ਏਨੀ ਜਲੀਈਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੀਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

एनी जलीईं नामु विसारिआ इक न चलीआ नालि ॥२॥

Enee jaleeeen naamu visaariaa ik na chaleeaa naali ||2||

These burnt offerings have caused mortals to forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Not even one of them will go along with you in the end. ||2||

ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥

Siri siri hoi nibe(rr)u hukami chalaaiaa ||

He judges each and every being; by the Hukam of His Command, He leads us on.

ਤੇਰੈ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

तेरै हथि निबेड़ु तूहै मनि भाइआ ॥

Terai hathi nibe(rr)u toohai mani bhaaiaa ||

Justice is in Your Hands, O Lord; You are pleasing to my mind.

ਕਾਲੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਬੰਨਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਖਸੀ ॥

कालु चलाए बंनि कोइ न रखसी ॥

Kaalu chalaae banni koi na rakhasee ||

The mortal is bound and gagged by Death and lead away; no one can rescue him.

ਜਰੁ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਕੰਨੑਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਨਚਸੀ ॥

जरु जरवाणा कंन्हि चड़िआ नचसी ॥

Jaru jaravaa(nn)aa kannhi cha(rr)iaa nachasee ||

Old age, the tyrant, dances on the mortal's shoulders.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਬੇੜੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਸੀ ॥

सतिगुरु बोहिथु बेड़ु सचा रखसी ॥

Satiguru bohithu be(rr)u sachaa rakhasee ||

So climb aboard the boat of the True Guru, and the True Lord will rescue you.

ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੜਹਾੜੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਖਸੀ ॥

अगनि भखै भड़हाड़ु अनदिनु भखसी ॥

Agani bhakhai bha(rr)ahaa(rr)u anadinu bhakhasee ||

The fire of desire burns like an oven, consuming mortals night and day.

ਫਾਥਾ ਚੁਗੈ ਚੋਗ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਛੁਟਸੀ ॥

फाथा चुगै चोग हुकमी छुटसी ॥

Phaathaa chugai chog hukamee chhutasee ||

Like trapped birds, the mortals peck at the corn; only through the Lord's Command will they find release.

ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਨਿਖੁਟਸੀ ॥੨੬॥

करता करे सु होगु कूड़ु निखुटसी ॥२६॥

Karataa kare su hogu koo(rr)u nikhutasee ||26||

Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass; falsehood shall fail in the end. ||26||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਦੇਖਾਇ ਦੇਇ ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥

घर महि घरु देखाइ देइ सो सतिगुरु पुरखु सुजाणु ॥

Ghar mahi gharu dekhaai dei so satiguru purakhu sujaa(nn)u ||

The True Guru is the All-knowing Primal Being; He shows us our true home within the home of the self.

ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਧੁਨਿਕਾਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਤਹ ਬਾਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

पंच सबद धुनिकार धुनि तह बाजै सबदु नीसाणु ॥

Pancch sabad dhunikaar dhuni tah baajai sabadu neesaa(nn)u ||

The Panch Shabad, the Five Primal Sounds, resonate and resound within; the insignia of the Shabad is revealed there, vibrating gloriously.

ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਤਹ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਹੈਰਾਨੁ ॥

दीप लोअ पाताल तह खंड मंडल हैरानु ॥

Deep loa paataal tah khandd manddal hairaanu ||

Worlds and realms, nether regions, solar systems and galaxies are wondrously revealed.

ਤਾਰ ਘੋਰ ਬਾਜਿੰਤ੍ਰ ਤਹ ਸਾਚਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥

तार घोर बाजिंत्र तह साचि तखति सुलतानु ॥

Taar ghor baajinttr tah saachi takhati sulataanu ||

The strings and the harps vibrate and resound; the true throne of the Lord is there.

ਸੁਖਮਨ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਰਾਗੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਮੰਡਲਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

सुखमन कै घरि रागु सुनि सुंनि मंडलि लिव लाइ ॥

Sukhaman kai ghari raagu suni sunni manddali liv laai ||

Listen to the music of the home of the heart - Sukhmani, peace of mind. Lovingly tune in to His state of celestial ecstasy.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

अकथ कथा बीचारीऐ मनसा मनहि समाइ ॥

Akath kathaa beechaareeai manasaa manahi samaai ||

Contemplate the Unspoken Speech, and the desires of the mind are dissolved.

ਉਲਟਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਤਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

उलटि कमलु अम्रिति भरिआ इहु मनु कतहु न जाइ ॥

Ulati kamalu ammmriti bhariaa ihu manu katahu na jaai ||

The heart-lotus is turned upside-down, and is filled with Ambrosial Nectar. This mind does not go out; it does not get distracted.

ਅਜਪਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

अजपा जापु न वीसरै आदि जुगादि समाइ ॥

Ajapaa jaapu na veesarai aadi jugaadi samaai ||

It does not forget the Chant which is chanted without chanting; it is immersed in the Primal Lord God of the ages.

ਸਭਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

सभि सखीआ पंचे मिले गुरमुखि निज घरि वासु ॥

Sabhi sakheeaa pancche mile guramukhi nij ghari vaasu ||

All the sister-companions are blessed with the five virtues. The Gurmukhs dwell in the home of the self deep within.

ਸਬਦੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਇਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

सबदु खोजि इहु घरु लहै नानकु ता का दासु ॥१॥

Sabadu khoji ihu gharu lahai naanaku taa kaa daasu ||1||

Nanak is the slave of that one who seeks the Shabad and finds this home within. ||1||

ਚਿਲਿਮਿਲਿ ਬਿਸੀਆਰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਫਾਨੀ ॥

The extravagant glamour of the world is a passing show.

ਕਾਲੂਬਿ ਅਕਲ ਮਨ ਗੋਰ ਨ ਮਾਨੀ ॥

कालूबि अकल मन गोर न मानी ॥

Kaaloobi akal man gor na maanee ||

My twisted mind does not believe that it will end up in a grave.

ਮਨ ਕਮੀਨ ਕਮਤਰੀਨ ਤੂ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਖੁਦਾਇਆ ॥

मन कमीन कमतरीन तू दरीआउ खुदाइआ ॥

Man kameen kamatareen too dareeaau khudaaiaa ||

I am meek and lowly; You are the great river.

ਏਕੁ ਚੀਜੁ ਮੁਝੈ ਦੇਹਿ ਅਵਰ ਜਹਰ ਚੀਜ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

एकु चीजु मुझै देहि अवर जहर चीज न भाइआ ॥

Eku cheeju mujhai dehi avar jahar cheej na bhaaiaa ||

Please, bless me with the one thing; everything else is poison, and does not tempt me.

ਪੁਰਾਬ ਖਾਮ ਕੂਜੈ ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਖੁਦਾਇਆ ॥

पुराब खाम कूजै हिकमति खुदाइआ ॥

Puraab khaam koojai hikamati khudaaiaa ||

You filled this fragile body with the water of life, O Lord, by Your Creative Power.

ਮਨ ਤੁਆਨਾ ਤੂ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਆਇਆ ॥

मन तुआना तू कुदरती आइआ ॥

Man tuaanaa too kudaratee aaiaa ||

By Your Omnipotence, I have become powerful.

ਸਗ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀਬਾਨ ਮਸਤਾਨਾ ਨਿਤ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥

सग नानक दीबान मसताना नित चड़ै सवाइआ ॥

Sag naanak deebaan masataanaa nit cha(rr)ai savaaiaa ||

Nanak is a dog in the Court of the Lord, intoxicated more and more, all the time.

ਆਤਸ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖੁਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਖੁਦਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

आतस दुनीआ खुनक नामु खुदाइआ ॥२॥

Aatas duneeaa khunak naamu khudaaiaa ||2||

The world is on fire; the Name of the Lord is cooling and soothing. ||2||

Sabho varatai chalatu chalatu vakhaa(nn)iaa ||

His wonderful play is all-pervading; it is wonderful and amazing!

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

पारब्रहमु परमेसरु गुरमुखि जाणिआ ॥

Paarabrhamu paramesaru guramukhi jaa(nn)iaa ||

As Gurmukh, I know the Transcendent Lord, the Supreme Lord God.

ਲਥੇ ਸਭਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣਿਆ ॥

लथे सभि विकार सबदि नीसाणिआ ॥

Lathe sabhi vikaar sabadi neesaa(nn)iaa ||

All my sins and corruption are washed away, through the insignia of the Shabad, the Word of God.

ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ਭਏ ਨਿਕਾਣਿਆ ॥

साधू संगि उधारु भए निकाणिआ ॥

Saadhoo sanggi udhaaru bhae nikaa(nn)iaa ||

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, one is saved, and becomes free.

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਸਭਿ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣਿਆ ॥

सिमरि सिमरि दातारु सभि रंग माणिआ ॥

Simari simari daataaru sabhi rangg maa(nn)iaa ||

Meditating, meditating in remembrance on the Great Giver, I enjoy all comforts and pleasures.

ਪਰਗਟੁ ਭਇਆ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਮਿਹਰ ਛਾਵਾਣਿਆ ॥

परगटु भइआ संसारि मिहर छावाणिआ ॥

Paragatu bhaiaa sanssaari mihar chhaavaa(nn)iaa ||

I have become famous throughout the world, under the canopy of His kindness and grace.

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣਿਆ ॥

आपे बखसि मिलाए सद कुरबाणिआ ॥

Aape bakhasi milaae sad kurabaa(nn)iaa ||

He Himself has forgiven me, and united me with Himself; I am forever a sacrifice to Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਣਿਆ ॥੨੭॥

नानक लए मिलाइ खसमै भाणिआ ॥२७॥

Naanak lae milaai khasamai bhaa(nn)iaa ||27||

O Nanak, by the Pleasure of His Will, my Lord and Master has blended me with Himself. ||27||

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਕਲਮ ਧੰਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਧਨੁ ਮਸੁ ॥

धंनु सु कागदु कलम धंनु धनु भांडा धनु मसु ॥

Dhannu su kaagadu kalam dhannu dhanu bhaandaa dhanu masu ||

Blessed is the paper, blessed is the pen, blessed is the inkwell, and blessed is the ink.

ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥

धनु लेखारी नानका जिनि नामु लिखाइआ सचु ॥१॥

Dhanu lekhaaree naanakaa jini naamu likhaaiaa sachu ||1||

Blessed is the writer, O Nanak, who writes the True Name. ||1||

ਆਪੇ ਪਟੀ ਕਲਮ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਭਿ ਤੂੰ ॥

आपे पटी कलम आपि उपरि लेखु भि तूं ॥

Aape patee kalam aapi upari lekhu bhi toonn ||

You Yourself are the writing tablet, and You Yourself are the pen. You are also what is written on it.

ਏਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਾਹੇ ਕੂ ॥੨॥

एको कहीऐ नानका दूजा काहे कू ॥२॥

Eko kaheeai naanakaa doojaa kaahe koo ||2||

Speak of the One Lord, O Nanak; how could there be any other? ||2||

Pauree:

ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪਿ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ॥

तूं आपे आपि वरतदा आपि बणत बणाई ॥

Toonn aape aapi varatadaa aapi ba(nn)at ba(nn)aaee ||

You Yourself are all-pervading; You Yourself made the making.

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਤੂ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

तुधु बिनु दूजा को नही तू रहिआ समाई ॥

Tudhu binu doojaa ko nahee too rahiaa samaaee ||

Without You, there is no other at all; You are permeating and pervading everywhere.

ਤੇਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

तेरी गति मिति तूहै जाणदा तुधु कीमति पाई ॥

Teree gati miti toohai jaa(nn)adaa tudhu keemati paaee ||

You alone know Your state and extent. Only You can estimate Your worth.

ਤੂ ਅਲਖ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥

तू अलख अगोचरु अगमु है गुरमति दिखाई ॥

Too alakh agocharu agamu hai guramati dikhaaee ||

You are invisible, imperceptible and inaccessible. You are revealed through the Guru's Teachings.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

अंतरि अगिआनु दुखु भरमु है गुर गिआनि गवाई ॥

Anttari agiaanu dukhu bharamu hai gur giaani gavaaee ||

Deep within, there is ignorance, suffering and doubt; through the spiritual wisdom of the Guru, they are eradicated.

ਜਿਸੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥

जिसु क्रिपा करहि तिसु मेलि लैहि सो नामु धिआई ॥

Jisu kripaa karahi tisu meli laihi so naamu dhiaaee ||

He alone meditates on the Naam, whom You unite with Yourself, in Your Mercy.

ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ॥

तू करता पुरखु अगमु है रविआ सभ ठाई ॥

Too karataa purakhu agammu hai raviaa sabh thaaee ||

You are the Creator, the Inaccessible Primal Lord God; You are all-pervading everywhere.

ਜਿਤੁ ਤੂ ਲਾਇਹਿ ਸਚਿਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਗੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ॥੨੮॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ

जितु तू लाइहि सचिआ तितु को लगै नानक गुण गाई ॥२८॥१॥ सुधु

Jitu too laaihi sachiaa titu ko lagai naanak gu(nn) gaaee ||28||1|| sudhu

To whatever You link the mortal, O True Lord, to that he is linked. Nanak sings Your Glorious Praises. ||28||1|| Sudh ||
