ਇਕੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਇਕੁ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਇਕੋ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥

इकु देखिआ इकु मंनिआ इको सुणिआ स्रवण सरोति ॥

Iku dekhiaa iku manniaa iko su(nn)iaa srva(nn) saroti ||

He sees the One, he believes in the One, and with his ears, he listens only to the One.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੋਤਿ ॥੧੬॥

जन नानक नामु सलाहि तू सचु सचे सेवा तेरी होति ॥१६॥

Jan naanak naamu salaahi too sachu sache sevaa teree hoti ||16||

O servant Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; this is your service to the Lord, the Truest of the True. ||16||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

सभि रस तिन कै रिदै हहि जिन हरि वसिआ मन माहि ॥

Sabhi ras tin kai ridai hahi jin hari vasiaa man maahi ||

All joy is in the hearts of those, within whose minds the Lord abides.

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਦੇਖਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

हरि दरगहि ते मुख उजले तिन कउ सभि देखण जाहि ॥

Hari daragahi te mukh ujale tin kau sabhi dekha(nn) jaahi ||

In the Court of the Lord, their faces are radiant, and everyone goes to see them.

ਜਿਨ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਭਉ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

जिन निरभउ नामु धिआइआ तिन कउ भउ कोई नाहि ॥

Jin nirabhau naamu dhiaaiaa tin kau bhau koee naahi ||

Those who meditate on the Name of the Fearless Lord have no fear.

ਹਰਿ ਉਤਮੁ ਤਿਨੀ ਸਰੇਵਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਹਿ ॥

हरि उतमु तिनी सरेविआ जिन कउ धुरि लिखिआ आहि ॥

Hari utamu tinee sareviaa jin kau dhuri likhiaa aahi ||

Those who have such pre-destined destiny remember the Sublime Lord.

ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪੈਨਾਈਅਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਵੁਠਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

ते हरि दरगहि पैनाईअहि जिन हरि वुठा मन माहि ॥

Te hari daragahi painaaeeahi jin hari vuthaa man maahi ||

Those, within whose minds the Lord abides, are robed with honor in the Court of the Lord.

ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਤਰੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਨ ਪਿਛੈ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਛਡਾਹਿ ॥

ओइ आपि तरे सभ कुट्मब सिउ तिन पिछै सभु जगतु छडाहि ॥

Oi aapi tare sabh kutambb siu tin pichhai sabhu jagatu chhadaahi ||

They are carried across, along with all their family, and the whole world is saved along with them.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਜਨ ਤਿਨ ਵੇਖਿ ਵੇਖਿ ਹਮ ਜੀਵਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

जन नानक कउ हरि मेलि जन तिन वेखि वेखि हम जीवाहि ॥१॥

Jan naanak kau hari meli jan tin vekhi vekhi ham jeevaahi ||1||

O Lord, please unite servant Nanak with Your humble servants; beholding them, beholding them, I live. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਭਈ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੀ ਜਿਥੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥

सा धरती भई हरीआवली जिथै मेरा सतिगुरु बैठा आइ ॥

Saa dharatee bhaee hareeaavalee jithai meraa satiguru baithaa aai ||

That land, where my True Guru comes and sits, becomes green and fertile.

ਸੇ ਜੰਤ ਭਏ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਜਿਨੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

से जंत भए हरीआवले जिनी मेरा सतिगुरु देखिआ जाइ ॥

Se jantt bhae hareeaavale jinee meraa satiguru dekhiaa jaai ||

Those beings who go and behold my True Guru are rejuvenated.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਕੁਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੁ ਜਨਨੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਣਿਆ ਮਾਇ ॥

धनु धंनु पिता धनु धंनु कुलु धनु धनु सु जननी जिनि गुरू जणिआ माइ ॥

Dhanu dhannu pitaa dhanu dhannu kulu dhanu dhanu su jananee jini guroo ja(nn)iaa maai ||

Blessed, blessed is the father; blessed, blessed is the family; blessed, blessed is the mother, who gave birth to the Guru.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਜਿਨੀ ਡਿਠਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥

धनु धंनु गुरू जिनि नामु अराधिआ आपि तरिआ जिनी डिठा तिना लए छडाइ ॥

Dhanu dhannu guroo jini naamu araadhiaa aapi tariaa jinee dithaa tinaa lae chhadaai ||

Blessed, blessed is the Guru, who worships and adores the Naam; He saves Himself, and emancipates those who see Him.

ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਧੋਵੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

हरि सतिगुरु मेलहु दइआ करि जनु नानकु धोवै पाइ ॥२॥

Hari satiguru melahu daiaa kari janu naanaku dhovai paai ||2||

O Lord, be kind, and unite me with the True Guru, that servant Nanak may wash His feet. ||2||

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥

सचु सचा सतिगुरु अमरु है जिसु अंदरि हरि उरि धारिआ ॥

Sachu sachaa satiguru amaru hai jisu anddari hari uri dhaariaa ||

Truest of the True is the Immortal True Guru; He has enshrined the Lord deep within His heart.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥

सचु सचा सतिगुरु पुरखु है जिनि कामु क्रोधु बिखु मारिआ ॥

Sachu sachaa satiguru purakhu hai jini kaamu krodhu bikhu maariaa ||

Truest of the True is the True Guru, the Primal Being, who has conquered sexual desire, anger and corruption.

ਜਾ ਡਿਠਾ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਧਾਰਿਆ ॥

जा डिठा पूरा सतिगुरू तां अंदरहु मनु साधारिआ ॥

Jaa dithaa pooraa satiguroo taan anddarahu manu saadhaariaa ||

When I see the Perfect True Guru, then deep within, my mind is comforted and consoled.

ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਘੁਮਿ ਵਾਰਿਆ ॥

बलिहारी गुर आपणे सदा सदा घुमि वारिआ ॥

Balihaaree gur aapa(nn)e sadaa sadaa ghumi vaariaa ||

I am a sacrifice to my True Guru; I am devoted and dedicated to Him, forever and ever.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਤਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੭॥

गुरमुखि जिता मनमुखि हारिआ ॥१७॥

Guramukhi jitaa manamukhi haariaa ||17||

A Gurmukh wins the battle of life whereas a self-willed manmukh loses it. ||17||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿਓਨੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਸੀ ॥

करि किरपा सतिगुरु मेलिओनु मुखि गुरमुखि नामु धिआइसी ॥

Kari kirapaa satiguru melionu mukhi guramukhi naamu dhiaaisee ||

By His Grace He leads us to meet the True Guru; then as Gurmukh, we chant the Lord's Name, and meditate on it.

ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਘਰੀ ਵਸਾਇਸੀ ॥

सो करे जि सतिगुर भावसी गुरु पूरा घरी वसाइसी ॥

So kare ji satigur bhaavasee guru pooraa gharee vasaaisee ||

We do that which pleases the True Guru; the Perfect Guru comes to dwell in the home of the heart.

ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਸਭੁ ਗਵਾਇਸੀ ॥

जिन अंदरि नामु निधानु है तिन का भउ सभु गवाइसी ॥

Jin anddari naamu nidhaanu hai tin kaa bhau sabhu gavaaisee ||

Those who have the treasure of the Naam deep within - all their fears are removed.

ਜਿਨ ਰਖਣ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਰ ਕੇਤੀ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥

जिन रखण कउ हरि आपि होइ होर केती झखि झखि जाइसी ॥

Jin rakha(nn) kau hari aapi hoi hor ketee jhakhi jhakhi jaaisee ||

They are protected by the Lord Himself; others struggle and fight against them, but they only come to death.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਹਰਿ ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਛੋਡਾਇਸੀ ॥੧॥

जन नानक नामु धिआइ तू हरि हलति पलति छोडाइसी ॥१॥

Jan naanak naamu dhiaai too hari halati palati chhodaaisee ||1||

O servant Nanak, meditate on the Naam; the Lord shall deliver you, here and hereafter. ||1||

ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

गुरसिखा कै मनि भावदी गुर सतिगुर की वडिआई ॥

Gurasikhaa kai mani bhaavadee gur satigur kee vadiaaee ||

The glorious greatness of the Guru the True Guru is pleasing to the GurSikh's mind.

ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਪੈਜ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਨਿਤ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਈ ॥

हरि राखहु पैज सतिगुरू की नित चड़ै सवाई ॥

Hari raakhahu paij satiguroo kee nit cha(rr)ai savaaee ||

The Lord preserves the honor of the True Guru, which increases day by day.

ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਛਡਾਈ ॥

गुर सतिगुर कै मनि पारब्रहमु है पारब्रहमु छडाई ॥

Gur satigur kai mani paarabrhamu hai paarabrhamu chhadaaee ||

The Supreme Lord God is in the Mind of the Guru, the True Guru; the Supreme Lord God saves Him.

ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਾਣੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਭ ਆਣਿ ਨਿਵਾਈ ॥

गुर सतिगुर ताणु दीबाणु हरि तिनि सभ आणि निवाई ॥

Gur satigur taa(nn)u deebaa(nn)u hari tini sabh aa(nn)i nivaaee ||

The Lord is the Power and Support of the Guru, the True Guru; all come to bow before Him.

ਜਿਨੀ ਡਿਠਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਪ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

जिनी डिठा मेरा सतिगुरु भाउ करि तिन के सभि पाप गवाई ॥

Jinee dithaa meraa satiguru bhaau kari tin ke sabhi paap gavaaee ||

Those who have gazed lovingly upon my True Guru - all their sins are taken away.

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਬਹੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥

हरि दरगह ते मुख उजले बहु सोभा पाई ॥

Hari daragah te mukh ujale bahu sobhaa paaee ||

Their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and they obtain great glory.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਧੂੜਿ ਤਿਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸਿਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੨॥

जनु नानकु मंगै धूड़ि तिन जो गुर के सिख मेरे भाई ॥२॥

Janu naanaku manggai dhoo(rr)i tin jo gur ke sikh mere bhaaee ||2||

Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of those GurSikhs, O my Siblings of Destiny. ||2||

ਹਉ ਆਖਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

हउ आखि सलाही सिफति सचु सचु सचे की वडिआई ॥

Hau aakhi salaahee siphati sachu sachu sache kee vadiaaee ||

I chant the Praises and Glories of the True One. True is the glorious greatness of the True Lord.

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

सालाही सचु सलाह सचु सचु कीमति किनै न पाई ॥

Saalaahee sachu salaah sachu sachu keemati kinai na paaee ||

I praise the True Lord, and the Praises of the True Lord. His worth cannot be estimated.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਸੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਚਖਿਆ ਸੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਰਹੇ ਆਘਾਈ ॥

सचु सचा रसु जिनी चखिआ से त्रिपति रहे आघाई ॥

Sachu sachaa rasu jinee chakhiaa se tripati rahe aaghaaee ||

Those who have tasted the true essence of the True Lord, remain satisfied and fulfilled.

ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਈ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਜਿਉ ਗੂੰਗੈ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ਖਾਈ ॥

इहु हरि रसु सेई जाणदे जिउ गूंगै मिठिआई खाई ॥

Ihu hari rasu seee jaa(nn)ade jiu goonggai mithiaaee khaaee ||

They know this essence of the Lord, but they say nothing, like the mute who tastes the sweet candy, and says nothing.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਵਜੀ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥੧੮॥

गुरि पूरै हरि प्रभु सेविआ मनि वजी वाधाई ॥१८॥

Guri poorai hari prbhu seviaa mani vajee vaadhaaee ||18||

The Perfect Guru serves the Lord God; His vibration vibrates and resounds in the mind. ||18||

ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਮਰਥਲ ਸੇਈ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਸੂਲੀਆ ॥

जिना अंदरि उमरथल सेई जाणनि सूलीआ ॥

Jinaa anddari umarathal seee jaa(nn)ani sooleeaa ||

Those who have a festering boil within - they alone know its pain.

ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਸਦ ਘੁਮਿ ਘੋਲੀਆ ॥

हरि जाणहि सेई बिरहु हउ तिन विटहु सद घुमि घोलीआ ॥

Hari jaa(nn)ahi seee birahu hau tin vitahu sad ghumi gholeeaa ||

Those who know the pain of separation from the Lord - I am forever a sacrifice, a sacrifice to them.

ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਿਰੁ ਤਿਨ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਤਲ ਰੋਲੀਆ ॥

हरि मेलहु सजणु पुरखु मेरा सिरु तिन विटहु तल रोलीआ ॥

Hari melahu saja(nn)u purakhu meraa siru tin vitahu tal roleeaa ||

O Lord, please lead me to meet the Guru, the Primal Being, my Friend; my head shall roll in the dust under His feet.

ਜੋ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹਉ ਗੁਲਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਗੋਲੀਆ ॥

जो सिख गुर कार कमावहि हउ गुलमु तिना का गोलीआ ॥

Jo sikh gur kaar kamaavahi hau gulamu tinaa kaa goleeaa ||

I am the slave of the slaves of those GurSikhs who serve Him.

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲੈ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਤਿਨ ਭਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚੋਲੀਆ ॥

हरि रंगि चलूलै जो रते तिन भिनी हरि रंगि चोलीआ ॥

Hari ranggi chaloolai jo rate tin bhinee hari ranggi choleeaa ||

Those who are imbued with the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love - their robes are drenched in the Love of the Lord.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਮੋਲੀਆ ॥੧॥

करि किरपा नानक मेलि गुर पहि सिरु वेचिआ मोलीआ ॥१॥

Kari kirapaa naanak meli gur pahi siru vechiaa moleeaa ||1||

Grant Your Grace, and lead Nanak to meet the Guru; I have sold my head to Him. ||1||

ਅਉਗਣੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

अउगणी भरिआ सरीरु है किउ संतहु निरमलु होइ ॥

Auga(nn)ee bhariaa sareeru hai kiu santtahu niramalu hoi ||

The body is full of mistakes and misdeeds; how can it become pure, O Saints?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਵੇਹਾਝੀਅਹਿ ਮਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਢੈ ਧੋਇ ॥

गुरमुखि गुण वेहाझीअहि मलु हउमै कढै धोइ ॥

Guramukhi gu(nn) vehaajheeahi malu haumai kadhai dhoi ||

The Gurmukh purchases virtues, which wash off the sin of egotism.

ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਹਿ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

सचु वणंजहि रंग सिउ सचु सउदा होइ ॥

Sachu va(nn)anjjahi rangg siu sachu saudaa hoi ||

True is the trade which purchases the True Lord with love.

ਤੋਟਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

तोटा मूलि न आवई लाहा हरि भावै सोइ ॥

Totaa mooli na aavaee laahaa hari bhaavai soi ||

No loss will come from this, and the profit comes by the Lord's Will.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक तिन सचु वणंजिआ जिना धुरि लिखिआ परापति होइ ॥२॥

Naanak tin sachu va(nn)anjjiaa jinaa dhuri likhiaa paraapati hoi ||2||

O Nanak, they alone purchase the Truth, who are blessed with such pre-ordained destiny. ||2||

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ॥

सालाही सचु सालाहणा सचु सचा पुरखु निराले ॥

Saalaahee sachu saalaaha(nn)aa sachu sachaa purakhu niraale ||

I praise the True One, who alone is worthy of praise. The True Primal Being is True - this is His unique quality.

ਸਚੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਵਾਲੇ ॥

सचु सेवी सचु मनि वसै सचु सचा हरि रखवाले ॥

Sachu sevee sachu mani vasai sachu sachaa hari rakhavaale ||

Serving the True Lord, the Truth comes to dwell in the mind. The Lord, the Truest of the True, is my Protector.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਸੇ ਜਾਇ ਰਲੇ ਸਚ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

सचु सचा जिनी अराधिआ से जाइ रले सच नाले ॥

Sachu sachaa jinee araadhiaa se jaai rale sach naale ||

Those who worship and adore the Truest of the True, shall go and merge with the True Lord.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥

सचु सचा जिनी न सेविआ से मनमुख मूड़ बेताले ॥

Sachu sachaa jinee na seviaa se manamukh moo(rr) betaale ||

Those who do not serve the Truest of the True - those self-willed manmukhs are foolish demons.

ਓਹ ਆਲੁ ਪਤਾਲੁ ਮੁਹਹੁ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਜਿਉ ਪੀਤੈ ਮਦਿ ਮਤਵਾਲੇ ॥੧੯॥

ओह आलु पतालु मुहहु बोलदे जिउ पीतै मदि मतवाले ॥१९॥

Oh aalu pataalu muhahu bolade jiu peetai madi matavaale ||19||

With their mouths, they babble on about this and that, like the drunkard who has drunk his wine. ||19||

Salok mahalaa 3 ||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਗਉੜੀ ਰਾਗਿ ਸੁਲਖਣੀ ਜੇ ਖਸਮੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

गउड़ी रागि सुलखणी जे खसमै चिति करेइ ॥

Gau(rr)ee raagi sulakha(nn)ee je khasamai chiti karei ||

Gauree Raga is auspicious, if, through it, one comes to think of his Lord and Master.

ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਐਸਾ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

भाणै चलै सतिगुरू कै ऐसा सीगारु करेइ ॥

Bhaa(nn)ai chalai satiguroo kai aisaa seegaaru karei ||

He should walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru; this should be his decoration.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਰਾਵੇਇ ॥

सचा सबदु भतारु है सदा सदा रावेइ ॥

Sachaa sabadu bhataaru hai sadaa sadaa raavei ||

The True Word of the Shabad is our spouse; ravish and enjoy it, forever and ever.

ਜਿਉ ਉਬਲੀ ਮਜੀਠੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਗਹਗਹਾ ਤਿਉ ਸਚੇ ਨੋ ਜੀਉ ਦੇਇ ॥

जिउ उबली मजीठै रंगु गहगहा तिउ सचे नो जीउ देइ ॥

Jiu ubalee majeethai ranggu gahagahaa tiu sache no jeeu dei ||

Like the deep crimson color of the madder plant - such is the dye which shall color you, when you dedicate your soul to the True One.

ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲੈ ਅਤਿ ਰਤੀ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਗਾ ਨੇਹੁ ॥

रंगि चलूलै अति रती सचे सिउ लगा नेहु ॥

Ranggi chaloolai ati ratee sache siu lagaa nehu ||

One who loves the True Lord is totally imbued with the Lord's Love, like the deep crimson color of the poppy.

ਕੂੜੁ ਠਗੀ ਗੁਝੀ ਨਾ ਰਹੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਮੁਲੰਮਾ ਪਲੇਟਿ ਧਰੇਹੁ ॥

कूड़ु ठगी गुझी ना रहै कूड़ु मुलमा पलेटि धरेहु ॥

Koo(rr)u thagee gujhee naa rahai koo(rr)u mulammaa paleti dharehu ||

Falsehood and deception may be covered with false coatings, but they cannot remain hidden.

ਕੂੜੀ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਕੂੜੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਗਾ ਨੇਹੁ ॥

कूड़ी करनि वडाईआ कूड़े सिउ लगा नेहु ॥

Koo(rr)ee karani vadaaeeaa koo(rr)e siu lagaa nehu ||

False is the uttering of praises, by those who love falsehood.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥

नानक सचा आपि है आपे नदरि करेइ ॥१॥

Naanak sachaa aapi hai aape nadari karei ||1||

O Nanak, He alone is True; He Himself casts His Glance of Grace. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਹੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥

सतसंगति महि हरि उसतति है संगि साधू मिले पिआरिआ ॥

Satasanggati mahi hari usatati hai sanggi saadhoo mile piaariaa ||

In the Sat Sangat the True Congregation the Lord's Praises are sung. In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Beloved Lord is met.

ਓਇ ਪੁਰਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਧੰਨਿ ਜਨ ਹਹਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰਿਆ ॥

ओइ पुरख प्राणी धंनि जन हहि उपदेसु करहि परउपकारिआ ॥

Oi purakh praa(nn)ee dhanni jan hahi upadesu karahi paraupakaariaa ||

Blessed is that mortal being, who shares the Teachings for the good of others.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਜਗੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥

हरि नामु द्रिड़ावहि हरि नामु सुणावहि हरि नामे जगु निसतारिआ ॥

Hari naamu dri(rr)aavahi hari naamu su(nn)aavahi hari naame jagu nisataariaa ||

He implants the Name of the Lord, and he preaches the Name of the Lord; through the Name of the Lord, the world is saved.

ਗੁਰ ਵੇਖਣ ਕਉ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਲੋਚੈ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਜਗਤਿ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਿਆ ॥

गुर वेखण कउ सभु कोई लोचै नव खंड जगति नमसकारिआ ॥

Gur vekha(nn) kau sabhu koee lochai nav khandd jagati namasakaariaa ||

Everyone longs to see the Guru; the world, and the nine continents, bow down to Him.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥

तुधु आपे आपु रखिआ सतिगुर विचि गुरु आपे तुधु सवारिआ ॥

Tudhu aape aapu rakhiaa satigur vichi guru aape tudhu savaariaa ||

You Yourself have established the True Guru; You Yourself have adorned the Guru.

ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਵਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

तू आपे पूजहि पूज करावहि सतिगुर कउ सिरजणहारिआ ॥

Too aape poojahi pooj karaavahi satigur kau siraja(nn)ahaariaa ||

You Yourself worship and adore the True Guru; You inspire others to worship Him as well, O Creator Lord.

ਕੋਈ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਮੁਹੁ ਜਮਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥

कोई विछुड़ि जाइ सतिगुरू पासहु तिसु काला मुहु जमि मारिआ ॥

Koee vichhu(rr)i jaai satiguroo paasahu tisu kaalaa muhu jami maariaa ||

If someone separates himself from the True Guru, his face is blackened, and he is destroyed by the Messenger of Death.

ਤਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਢੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਮਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥

तिसु अगै पिछै ढोई नाही गुरसिखी मनि वीचारिआ ॥

Tisu agai pichhai dhoee naahee gurasikhee mani veechaariaa ||

He shall find no shelter, here or hereafter; the GurSikhs have realized this in their minds.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरू नो मिले सेई जन उबरे जिन हिरदै नामु समारिआ ॥

Satiguroo no mile seee jan ubare jin hiradai naamu samaariaa ||

That humble being who meets the True Guru is saved; he cherishes the Naam, the Name of the Lord, in his heart.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪੁਤਹਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਅਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੨॥

जन नानक के गुरसिख पुतहहु हरि जपिअहु हरि निसतारिआ ॥२॥

Jan naanak ke gurasikh putahahu hari japiahu hari nisataariaa ||2||

Servant Nanak says: O GurSikhs, O my sons, meditate on the Lord; only the Lord shall save you. ||2||

Mahalaa 3 ||

Third Mehl:

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

हउमै जगतु भुलाइआ दुरमति बिखिआ बिकार ॥

Haumai jagatu bhulaaiaa duramati bikhiaa bikaar ||

Egotism has led the world astray, along with evil-mindedness and the poison of corruption.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਨਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਿਆਰ ॥

सतिगुरु मिलै त नदरि होइ मनमुख अंध अंधिआर ॥

Satiguru milai ta nadari hoi manamukh anddh anddhiaar ||

Meeting with the True Guru, we are blessed by the Lord's Glance of Grace, while the self-willed manmukh gropes around in the darkness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਾਏ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੩॥

नानक आपे मेलि लए जिस नो सबदि लाए पिआरु ॥३॥

Naanak aape meli lae jis no sabadi laae piaaru ||3||

O Nanak, the Lord absorbs into Himself those whom He inspires to love the Word of His Shabad. ||3||

Pauree:

ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਭਿਜੈ ॥

सचु सचे की सिफति सलाह है सो करे जिसु अंदरु भिजै ॥

Sachu sache kee siphati salaah hai so kare jisu anddaru bhijai ||

True are the Praises and the Glories of the True One; he alone speaks them, whose mind is softened within.

ਜਿਨੀ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕੰਧੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਛਿਜੈ ॥

जिनी इक मनि इकु अराधिआ तिन का कंधु न कबहू छिजै ॥

Jinee ik mani iku araadhiaa tin kaa kanddhu na kabahoo chhijai ||

Those who worship the One Lord with single-minded devotion - their bodies shall never perish.

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਿਜੈ ॥

धनु धनु पुरख साबासि है जिन सचु रसना अम्रितु पिजै ॥

Dhanu dhanu purakh saabaasi hai jin sachu rasanaa ammmritu pijai ||

Blessed, blessed and acclaimed is that person, who tastes with his tongue the Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਸੇ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਲਿਜੈ ॥

सचु सचा जिन मनि भावदा से मनि सची दरगह लिजै ॥

Sachu sachaa jin mani bhaavadaa se mani sachee daragah lijai ||

One whose mind is pleased with the Truest of the True is accepted in the True Court.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਚਿਆਰੀਆ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਿਜੈ ॥੨੦॥

धनु धंनु जनमु सचिआरीआ मुख उजल सचु करिजै ॥२०॥

Dhanu dhannu janamu sachiaareeaa mukh ujal sachu karijai ||20||

Blessed, blessed is the birth of those true beings; the True Lord brightens their faces. ||20||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਾਕਤ ਜਾਇ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਕੂੜਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੇ ॥

साकत जाइ निवहि गुर आगै मनि खोटे कूड़ि कूड़िआरे ॥

Saakat jaai nivahi gur aagai mani khote koo(rr)i koo(rr)iaare ||

The faithless cynics go and bow before the Guru, but their minds are corrupt and false, totally false.

ਜਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਉਠਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਬਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਘੁਸਰਿ ਬਗੁਲਾਰੇ ॥

जा गुरु कहै उठहु मेरे भाई बहि जाहि घुसरि बगुलारे ॥

Jaa guru kahai uthahu mere bhaaee bahi jaahi ghusari bagulaare ||

When the Guru says, ""Rise up, my Siblings of Destiny"", they sit down, crowded in like cranes.

ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢੇ ਲਧੋਵਾਰੇ ॥

गुरसिखा अंदरि सतिगुरु वरतै चुणि कढे लधोवारे ॥

Gurasikhaa anddari satiguru varatai chu(nn)i kadhe ladhovaare ||

The True Guru prevails among His GurSikhs; they pick out and expel the wanderers.

ਓਇ ਅਗੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਬਹਿ ਮੁਹੁ ਛਪਾਇਨਿ ਨ ਰਲਨੀ ਖੋਟੇਆਰੇ ॥

ओइ अगै पिछै बहि मुहु छपाइनि न रलनी खोटेआरे ॥

Oi agai pichhai bahi muhu chhapaaini na ralanee khoteaare ||

Sitting here and there, they hide their faces; being counterfeit, they cannot mix with the genuine.

ਓਨਾ ਦਾ ਭਖੁ ਸੁ ਓਥੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ਕੂੜੁ ਲਹਨਿ ਭੇਡਾਰੇ ॥

ओना दा भखु सु ओथै नाही जाइ कूड़ु लहनि भेडारे ॥

Onaa daa bhakhu su othai naahee jaai koo(rr)u lahani bhedaare ||

There is no food for them there; the false go into the filth like sheep.

ਜੇ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਨਰੁ ਖਾਵਾਈਐ ਲੋਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਢੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਉਗਲਾਰੇ ॥

जे साकतु नरु खावाईऐ लोचीऐ बिखु कढै मुखि उगलारे ॥

Je saakatu naru khaavaaeeai locheeai bikhu kadhai mukhi ugalaare ||

If you try to feed the faithless cynic, he will spit out poison from his mouth.

ਹਰਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਸੇਤੀ ਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਓਇ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

हरि साकत सेती संगु न करीअहु ओइ मारे सिरजणहारे ॥

Hari saakat setee sanggu na kareeahu oi maare siraja(nn)ahaare ||

O Lord, let me not be in the company of the faithless cynic, who is cursed by the Creator Lord.

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

जिस का इहु खेलु सोई करि वेखै जन नानक नामु समारे ॥१॥

Jis kaa ihu khelu soee kari vekhai jan naanak naamu samaare ||1||

This drama belongs to the Lord; He performs it, and He watches over it. Servant Nanak cherishes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||


ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरु पुरखु अगमु है जिसु अंदरि हरि उरि धारिआ ॥

Satiguru purakhu agammu hai jisu anddari hari uri dhaariaa ||

The True Guru the Primal Being is inaccessible; He has enshrined the Lord's Name within His heart.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੋ ਅਪੜਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਲਿ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरू नो अपड़ि कोइ न सकई जिसु वलि सिरजणहारिआ ॥

Satiguroo no apa(rr)i koi na sakaee jisu vali siraja(nn)ahaariaa ||

No one can equal the True Guru; the Creator Lord is on His side.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਖੜਗੁ ਸੰਜੋਉ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਵਿਡਾਰਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरू का खड़गु संजोउ हरि भगति है जितु कालु कंटकु मारि विडारिआ ॥

Satiguroo kaa kha(rr)agu sanjjou hari bhagati hai jitu kaalu kanttaku maari vidaariaa ||

Devotional worship of the Lord is the sword and armor of the True Guru; He has killed and cast out Death, the torturer.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਰਖਣਹਾਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरू का रखणहारा हरि आपि है सतिगुरू कै पिछै हरि सभि उबारिआ ॥

Satiguroo kaa rakha(nn)ahaaraa hari aapi hai satiguroo kai pichhai hari sabhi ubaariaa ||

The Lord Himself is the Protector of the True Guru. The Lord saves all those who follow in the footsteps of the True Guru.

ਜੋ ਮੰਦਾ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰੈ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥

जो मंदा चितवै पूरे सतिगुरू का सो आपि उपावणहारै मारिआ ॥

Jo manddaa chitavai poore satiguroo kaa so aapi upaava(nn)ahaarai maariaa ||

One who thinks evil of the Perfect True Guru - the Creator Lord Himself destroys him.

ਏਹ ਗਲ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੨॥

एह गल होवै हरि दरगह सचे की जन नानक अगमु वीचारिआ ॥२॥

Eh gal hovai hari daragah sache kee jan naanak agamu veechaariaa ||2||

These words will be confirmed as true in the Court of the Lord; servant Nanak reveals this mystery. ||2||

ਸਚੁ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਜਾ ਉਠੇ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਚਵੇ ॥

सचु सुतिआ जिनी अराधिआ जा उठे ता सचु चवे ॥

Sachu sutiaa jinee araadhiaa jaa uthe taa sachu chave ||

Those who dwell upon the True Lord while asleep, utter the True Name when they are awake.

ਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਰਵੇ ॥

से विरले जुग महि जाणीअहि जो गुरमुखि सचु रवे ॥

Se virale jug mahi jaa(nn)eeahi jo guramukhi sachu rave ||

How rare in the world are those Gurmukhs who dwell upon the True Lord.

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਜਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਲਵੇ ॥

हउ बलिहारी तिन कउ जि अनदिनु सचु लवे ॥

Hau balihaaree tin kau ji anadinu sachu lave ||

I am a sacrifice to those who chant the True Name, night and day.

ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਸੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਗਵੇ ॥

जिन मनि तनि सचा भावदा से सची दरगह गवे ॥

Jin mani tani sachaa bhaavadaa se sachee daragah gave ||

The True Lord is pleasing to their minds and bodies; they go to the Court of the True Lord.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਵੇ ॥੨੧॥

जनु नानकु बोलै सचु नामु सचु सचा सदा नवे ॥२१॥

Janu naanaku bolai sachu naamu sachu sachaa sadaa nave ||21||

Servant Nanak chants the True Name; truly, the True Lord is forever brand new. ||21||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਕਿਆ ਸਵਣਾ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਗਣਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

किआ सवणा किआ जागणा गुरमुखि ते परवाणु ॥

Kiaa sava(nn)aa kiaa jaaga(nn)aa guramukhi te paravaa(nn)u ||

Who is asleep, and who is awake? Those who are Gurmukh are approved.

ਜਿਨਾ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਰਧਾਨ ॥

जिना सासि गिरासि न विसरै से पूरे पुरख परधान ॥

Jinaa saasi giraasi na visarai se poore purakh paradhaan ||

Those who do not forget the Lord, with each and every breath and morsel of food, are the perfect and famous persons.

ਕਰਮੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਗੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

करमी सतिगुरु पाईऐ अनदिनु लगै धिआनु ॥

Karamee satiguru paaeeai anadinu lagai dhiaanu ||

By His Grace they find the True Guru; night and day, they meditate.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

तिन की संगति मिलि रहा दरगह पाई मानु ॥

Tin kee sanggati mili rahaa daragah paaee maanu ||

I join the society of those persons, and in so doing, I am honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਸਉਦੇ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਉਚਰਹਿ ਉਠਦੇ ਭੀ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

सउदे वाहु वाहु उचरहि उठदे भी वाहु करेनि ॥

Saude vaahu vaahu ucharahi uthade bhee vaahu kareni ||

While asleep, they chant, ""Waaho! Waaho!"", and while awake, they chant, ""Waaho!"" as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਜਿ ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਸੰਮਾਲੇਨਿ ॥੧॥

नानक ते मुख उजले जि नित उठि समालेनि ॥१॥

Naanak te mukh ujale ji nit uthi sammaaleni ||1||

O Nanak, radiant are the faces of those, who rise up early each day, and dwell upon the Lord. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

सतिगुरु सेवीऐ आपणा पाईऐ नामु अपारु ॥

Satiguru seveeai aapa(nn)aa paaeeai naamu apaaru ||

Serving his True Guru, one obtains the Naam, the Name of the Infinite Lord.

ਭਉਜਲਿ ਡੁਬਦਿਆ ਕਢਿ ਲਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥

भउजलि डुबदिआ कढि लए हरि दाति करे दातारु ॥

Bhaujali dubadiaa kadhi lae hari daati kare daataaru ||

The drowning person is lifted up and out of the terrifying world-ocean; the Great Giver gives the gift of the Lord's Name.

ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੇ ਸਾਹ ਹੈ ਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

धंनु धंनु से साह है जि नामि करहि वापारु ॥

Dhannu dhannu se saah hai ji naami karahi vaapaaru ||

Blessed, blessed are those bankers who trade the Naam.

ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਸਿਖ ਆਵਦੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

वणजारे सिख आवदे सबदि लघावणहारु ॥

Va(nn)ajaare sikh aavade sabadi laghaava(nn)ahaaru ||

The Sikhs, the traders come, and through the Word of His Shabad, they are carried across.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਭਈ ਤਿਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

जन नानक जिन कउ क्रिपा भई तिन सेविआ सिरजणहारु ॥२॥

Jan naanak jin kau kripaa bhaee tin seviaa siraja(nn)ahaaru ||2||

O servant Nanak, they alone serve the Creator Lord, who are blessed by His Grace. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਜਨ ਭਗਤ ਹਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ॥

सचु सचे के जन भगत हहि सचु सचा जिनी अराधिआ ॥

Sachu sache ke jan bhagat hahi sachu sachaa jinee araadhiaa ||

Those who truly worship and adore the True Lord, are truly the humble devotees of the True Lord.

ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਢੰਢੋਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਧਿਆ ॥

जिन गुरमुखि खोजि ढंढोलिआ तिन अंदरहु ही सचु लाधिआ ॥

Jin guramukhi khoji dhanddholiaa tin anddarahu hee sachu laadhiaa ||

Those Gurmukhs who search and seek, find the True One within themselves.

ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਤਿਨੀ ਸਾਧਿਆ ॥

सचु साहिबु सचु जिनी सेविआ कालु कंटकु मारि तिनी साधिआ ॥

Sachu saahibu sachu jinee seviaa kaalu kanttaku maari tinee saadhiaa ||

Those who truly serve their True Lord and Master, overwhelm and conquer Death, the torturer.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਭ ਦੂ ਵਡਾ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚਿ ਰਲਾਧਿਆ ॥

सचु सचा सभ दू वडा है सचु सेवनि से सचि रलाधिआ ॥

Sachu sachaa sabh doo vadaa hai sachu sevani se sachi ralaadhiaa ||

The True One is truly the greatest of all; those who serve the True One are blended with the True One.

ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਨੋ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਸੇਵਿ ਫਲਾਧਿਆ ॥੨੨॥

सचु सचे नो साबासि है सचु सचा सेवि फलाधिआ ॥२२॥

Sachu sache no saabaasi hai sachu sachaa sevi phalaadhiaa ||22||

Blessed and acclaimed is the Truest of the True; serving the Truest of the True, one blossoms forth in fruition. ||22||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮਹੀਣ ਭਰਮਾਇ ॥

मनमुखु प्राणी मुगधु है नामहीण भरमाइ ॥

Manamukhu praa(nn)ee mugadhu hai naamahee(nn) bharamaai ||

The self-willed manmukh is foolish; he wanders around without the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਨੂਆ ਨਾ ਟਿਕੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

बिनु गुर मनूआ ना टिकै फिरि फिरि जूनी पाइ ॥

Binu gur manooaa naa tikai phiri phiri joonee paai ||

Without the Guru, his mind is not held steady, and he is reincarnated, over and over again.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲ ਹੋਹਿ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਆਇ ॥

हरि प्रभु आपि दइआल होहि तां सतिगुरु मिलिआ आइ ॥

Hari prbhu aapi daiaal hohi taan satiguru miliaa aai ||

But when the Lord God Himself becomes merciful to him, then the True Guru comes to meet him.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਤੂ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

जन नानक नामु सलाहि तू जनम मरण दुखु जाइ ॥१॥

Jan naanak naamu salaahi too janam mara(nn) dukhu jaai ||1||

O servant Nanak, praise the Naam; the pains of birth and death shall come to an end. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

गुरु सालाही आपणा बहु बिधि रंगि सुभाइ ॥

Guru saalaahee aapa(nn)aa bahu bidhi ranggi subhaai ||

I praise my Guru in so many ways, with joyful love and affection.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਰਖਿਆ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇ ॥

सतिगुर सेती मनु रता रखिआ बणत बणाइ ॥

Satigur setee manu rataa rakhiaa ba(nn)at ba(nn)aai ||

My mind is imbued with the True Guru; He has preserved the make of its making.

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਨ ਰਜਈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

जिहवा सालाहि न रजई हरि प्रीतम चितु लाइ ॥

Jihavaa saalaahi na rajaee hari preetam chitu laai ||

My tongue is not satisfied by praising Him; He has linked my consciousness with the Lord, my Beloved.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਮਨਿ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक नावै की मनि भुख है मनु त्रिपतै हरि रसु खाइ ॥२॥

Naanak naavai kee mani bhukh hai manu tripatai hari rasu khaai ||2||

O Nanak, my mind hungers for the Name of the Lord; my mind is satisfied, tasting the sublime essence of the Lord. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਬਣਾਈਆ ॥

सचु सचा कुदरति जाणीऐ दिनु राती जिनि बणाईआ ॥

Sachu sachaa kudarati jaa(nn)eeai dinu raatee jini ba(nn)aaeeaa ||

The True Lord is truly known for His all-powerful creative nature; He fashioned the days and the nights.

ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

सो सचु सलाही सदा सदा सचु सचे कीआ वडिआईआ ॥

So sachu salaahee sadaa sadaa sachu sache keeaa vadiaaeeaa ||

I praise that True Lord, forever and ever; True is the glorious greatness of the True Lord.

ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥

सालाही सचु सलाह सचु सचु कीमति किनै न पाईआ ॥

Saalaahee sachu salaah sachu sachu keemati kinai na paaeeaa ||

True are the Praises of the Praiseworthy True Lord; the value of the True Lord cannot be appraised.

ਜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤਾ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈਆ ॥

जा मिलिआ पूरा सतिगुरू ता हाजरु नदरी आईआ ॥

Jaa miliaa pooraa satiguroo taa haajaru nadaree aaeeaa ||

When someone meets the Perfect True Guru, then His Sublime Presence comes to be seen.

ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਭੁਖਾ ਸਭਿ ਗਵਾਈਆ ॥੨੩॥

सचु गुरमुखि जिनी सलाहिआ तिना भुखा सभि गवाईआ ॥२३॥

Sachu guramukhi jinee salaahiaa tinaa bhukhaa sabhi gavaaeeaa ||23||

Those Gurmukhs who praise the True Lord - all their hunger is gone. ||23||

ਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਖੋਜੇਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਧਾ ਲੋੜਿ ॥

मै मनु तनु खोजि खोजेदिआ सो प्रभु लधा लोड़ि ॥

Mai manu tanu khoji khojediaa so prbhu ladhaa lo(rr)i ||

Searching and examining my mind and body, I have found that God, whom I longed for.

ਵਿਸਟੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਜੋੜਿ ॥੧॥

विसटु गुरू मै पाइआ जिनि हरि प्रभु दिता जोड़ि ॥१॥

Visatu guroo mai paaiaa jini hari prbhu ditaa jo(rr)i ||1||

I have found the Guru, the Divine Intermediary, who has united me with the Lord God. ||1||


ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Third Mehl:

ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ਅਤਿ ਅੰਨਾ ਬੋਲਾ ॥

माइआधारी अति अंना बोला ॥

Maaiaadhaaree ati annaa bolaa ||

One who is attached to Maya is totally blind and deaf.

ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਸੁਣਈ ਬਹੁ ਰੋਲ ਘਚੋਲਾ ॥

सबदु न सुणई बहु रोल घचोला ॥

Sabadu na su(nn)aee bahu rol ghacholaa ||

He does not listen to the Word of the Shabad; he makes a great uproar and tumult.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

गुरमुखि जापै सबदि लिव लाइ ॥

Guramukhi jaapai sabadi liv laai ||

The Gurmukhs chant and meditate on the Shabad, and lovingly center their consciousness on it.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

हरि नामु सुणि मंने हरि नामि समाइ ॥

Hari naamu su(nn)i manne hari naami samaai ||

They hear and believe in the Name of the Lord; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥

जो तिसु भावै सु करे कराइआ ॥

Jo tisu bhaavai su kare karaaiaa ||

Whatever pleases God, He causes that to be done.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਜਦਾ ਜੰਤੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

नानक वजदा जंतु वजाइआ ॥२॥

Naanak vajadaa janttu vajaaiaa ||2||

O Nanak, human beings are the instruments which vibrate as God plays them. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਜੋ ਜੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਰਤੈ ॥

तू करता सभु किछु जाणदा जो जीआ अंदरि वरतै ॥

Too karataa sabhu kichhu jaa(nn)adaa jo jeeaa anddari varatai ||

You, O Creator, know everything which occurs within our beings.

ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਗਣਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਣਤੈ ॥

तू करता आपि अगणतु है सभु जगु विचि गणतै ॥

Too karataa aapi aga(nn)atu hai sabhu jagu vichi ga(nn)atai ||

You Yourself, O Creator, are incalculable, while the entire world is within the realm of calculation.

ਸਭੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਣਤੈ ॥

सभु कीता तेरा वरतदा सभ तेरी बणतै ॥

Sabhu keetaa teraa varatadaa sabh teree ba(nn)atai ||

Everything happens according to Your Will; You created all.

ਤੂ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਚਲਤੈ ॥

तू घटि घटि इकु वरतदा सचु साहिब चलतै ॥

Too ghati ghati iku varatadaa sachu saahib chalatai ||

You are the One, pervading in each and every heart; O True Lord and Master, this is Your play.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਰਤੈ ॥੨੪॥

सतिगुर नो मिले सु हरि मिले नाही किसै परतै ॥२४॥

Satigur no mile su hari mile naahee kisai paratai ||24||

One who meets the True Guru meets the Lord; no one can turn him away. ||24||

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਈਐ ਚਿਤੁ ॥

इहु मनूआ द्रिड़ु करि रखीऐ गुरमुखि लाईऐ चितु ॥

Ihu manooaa dri(rr)u kari rakheeai guramukhi laaeeai chitu ||

Hold this mind steady and stable; become Gurmukh and focus your consciousness.

ਕਿਉ ਸਾਸਿ ਗਿਰਾਸਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਨਿਤ ॥

किउ सासि गिरासि विसारीऐ बहदिआ उठदिआ नित ॥

Kiu saasi giraasi visaareeai bahadiaa uthadiaa nit ||

How could you ever forget Him, with each breath and morsel of food, sitting down or standing up?

ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਗਈ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਵਸਿ ॥

मरण जीवण की चिंता गई इहु जीअड़ा हरि प्रभ वसि ॥

Mara(nn) jeeva(nn) kee chinttaa gaee ihu jeea(rr)aa hari prbh vasi ||

My anxiety about birth and death has ended; this soul is under the control of the Lord God.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖੁ ਤੂ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਖਸਿ ॥੧॥

जिउ भावै तिउ रखु तू जन नानक नामु बखसि ॥१॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu rakhu too jan naanak naamu bakhasi ||1||

If it pleases You, then save servant Nanak, and bless him with Your Name. ||1||


ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Third Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਪੀਛੈ ॥

मनमुखु अहंकारी महलु न जाणै खिनु आगै खिनु पीछै ॥

Manamukhu ahankkaaree mahalu na jaa(nn)ai khinu aagai khinu peechhai ||

The egotistical self-willed manmukh does not know the Mansion of the Lord's Presence; one moment he is here and the next moment he is there.

ਸਦਾ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ਮਹਲਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੀਝੈ ॥

सदा बुलाईऐ महलि न आवै किउ करि दरगह सीझै ॥

Sadaa bulaaeeai mahali na aavai kiu kari daragah seejhai ||

He is always invited, but he does not go to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. How shall he be accepted in the Court of the Lord?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ॥

सतिगुर का महलु विरला जाणै सदा रहै कर जोड़ि ॥

Satigur kaa mahalu viralaa jaa(nn)ai sadaa rahai kar jo(rr)i ||

How rare are those who know the Mansion of the True Guru; they stand with their palms pressed together.

ਆਪਣੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਏ ਬਹੋੜਿ ॥੨॥

आपणी क्रिपा करे हरि मेरा नानक लए बहोड़ि ॥२॥

Aapa(nn)ee kripaa kare hari meraa naanak lae baho(rr)i ||2||

If my Lord grants His Grace, O Nanak, He restores them to Himself. ||2||

सा सेवा कीती सफल है जितु सतिगुर का मनु मंने ॥

Saa sevaa keetee saphal hai jitu satigur kaa manu manne ||

Fruitful and rewarding is that service, which is pleasing to the Guru's Mind.

ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਾ ਪਾਪ ਕਸੰਮਲ ਭੰਨੇ ॥

जा सतिगुर का मनु मंनिआ ता पाप कसमल भंने ॥

Jaa satigur kaa manu manniaa taa paap kasammal bhanne ||

When the Mind of the True Guru is pleased, then sins and misdeeds run away.

ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਜਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਸਿਖੀ ਕੰਨੇ ॥

उपदेसु जि दिता सतिगुरू सो सुणिआ सिखी कंने ॥

Upadesu ji ditaa satiguroo so su(nn)iaa sikhee kanne ||

The Sikhs listen to the Teachings imparted by the True Guru.

ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਚੜੀ ਚਵਗਣਿ ਵੰਨੇ ॥

जिन सतिगुर का भाणा मंनिआ तिन चड़ी चवगणि वंने ॥

Jin satigur kaa bhaa(nn)aa manniaa tin cha(rr)ee chavaga(nn)i vanne ||

Those who surrender to the True Guru's Will are imbued with the four-fold Love of the Lord.

ਇਹ ਚਾਲ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨੁ ਭਿੰਨੇ ॥੨੫॥

इह चाल निराली गुरमुखी गुर दीखिआ सुणि मनु भिंने ॥२५॥

Ih chaal niraalee guramukhee gur deekhiaa su(nn)i manu bhinne ||25||

This is the unique and distinct life-style of the Gurmukhs: listening to the Guru's Teachings, their minds blossom forth. ||25||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਪਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥

जिनि गुरु गोपिआ आपणा तिसु ठउर न ठाउ ॥

Jini guru gopiaa aapa(nn)aa tisu thaur na thaau ||

Those who do not affirm their Guru shall have no home or place of rest.

ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਏ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥

हलतु पलतु दोवै गए दरगह नाही थाउ ॥

Halatu palatu dovai gae daragah naahee thaau ||

They lose both this world and the next; they have no place in the Court of the Lord.

ਓਹ ਵੇਲਾ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਲਗਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

ओह वेला हथि न आवई फिरि सतिगुर लगहि पाइ ॥

Oh velaa hathi na aavaee phiri satigur lagahi paai ||

This opportunity to bow at the Feet of the True Guru shall never come again.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਗਣਤੈ ਘੁਸੀਐ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥

सतिगुर की गणतै घुसीऐ दुखे दुखि विहाइ ॥

Satigur kee ga(nn)atai ghuseeai dukhe dukhi vihaai ||

If they miss out on being counted by the True Guru, they shall pass their lives in pain and misery.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

सतिगुरु पुरखु निरवैरु है आपे लए जिसु लाइ ॥

Satiguru purakhu niravairu hai aape lae jisu laai ||

The True Guru, the Primal Being, has no hatred or vengeance; He unites with Himself those with whom He is pleased.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਓਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक दरसनु जिना वेखालिओनु तिना दरगह लए छडाइ ॥१॥

Naanak darasanu jinaa vekhaalionu tinaa daragah lae chhadaai ||1||

O Nanak, those who behold the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, are emancipated in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

मनमुखु अगिआनु दुरमति अहंकारी ॥

Manamukhu agiaanu duramati ahankkaaree ||

The self-willed manmukh is ignorant, evil-minded and egotistical.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜੂਐ ਮਤਿ ਹਾਰੀ ॥

अंतरि क्रोधु जूऐ मति हारी ॥

Anttari krodhu jooai mati haaree ||

He is filled with anger within, and he loses his mind in the gamble.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਓਹੁ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

कूड़ु कुसतु ओहु पाप कमावै ॥

Koo(rr)u kusatu ohu paap kamaavai ||

He commits the sins of fraud and unrighteousness.

ਕਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

किआ ओहु सुणै किआ आखि सुणावै ॥

Kiaa ohu su(nn)ai kiaa aakhi su(nn)aavai ||

What can he hear, and what can he tell others?

ਅੰਨਾ ਬੋਲਾ ਖੁਇ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

अंना बोला खुइ उझड़ि पाइ ॥

Annaa bolaa khui ujha(rr)i paai ||

He is blind and deaf; he loses his way, and wanders lost in the wilderness.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

मनमुखु अंधा आवै जाइ ॥

Manamukhu anddhaa aavai jaai ||

The blind, self-willed manmukh comes and goes in reincarnation;

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर भेटे थाइ न पाइ ॥

Binu satigur bhete thaai na paai ||

Without meeting the True Guru, he finds no place of rest.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक पूरबि लिखिआ कमाइ ॥२॥

Naanak poorabi likhiaa kamaai ||2||

O Nanak, he acts according to his pre-ordained destiny. ||2||

Pauree:

ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਕਠੋਰ ਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਬਹਹਿ ਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

जिन के चित कठोर हहि से बहहि न सतिगुर पासि ॥

Jin ke chit kathor hahi se bahahi na satigur paasi ||

Those who have hearts as hard as stone, do not sit near the True Guru.

ਓਥੈ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਚਿਤ ਉਦਾਸਿ ॥

ओथै सचु वरतदा कूड़िआरा चित उदासि ॥

Othai sachu varatadaa koo(rr)iaaraa chit udaasi ||

Truth prevails there; the false ones do not attune their consciousness to it.

ਓਇ ਵਲੁ ਛਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਝਤਿ ਕਢਦੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਹਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

ओइ वलु छलु करि झति कढदे फिरि जाइ बहहि कूड़िआरा पासि ॥

Oi valu chhalu kari jhati kadhade phiri jaai bahahi koo(rr)iaaraa paasi ||

By hook or by crook, they pass their time, and then they go back to sit with the false ones again.

ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਗਡਈ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥

विचि सचे कूड़ु न गडई मनि वेखहु को निरजासि ॥

Vichi sache koo(rr)u na gadaee mani vekhahu ko nirajaasi ||

Falsehood does not mix with the Truth; O people, check it out and see.

ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੀ ਜਾਇ ਰਲੇ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਸਿਖ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨੬॥

कूड़िआर कूड़िआरी जाइ रले सचिआर सिख बैठे सतिगुर पासि ॥२६॥

Koo(rr)iaar koo(rr)iaaree jaai rale sachiaar sikh baithe satigur paasi ||26||

The false go and mingle with the false, while the truthful Sikhs sit by the side of the True Guru. ||26||

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:

ਰਹਦੇ ਖੁਹਦੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਮਾਰਿਅਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਹਰੁ ॥

रहदे खुहदे निंदक मारिअनु करि आपे आहरु ॥

Rahade khuhade ninddak maarianu kari aape aaharu ||

By their own efforts, the slanderers have destroyed all remnants of themselves.

ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਹਰੁ ॥੧॥

संत सहाई नानका वरतै सभ जाहरु ॥१॥

Santt sahaaee naanakaa varatai sabh jaaharu ||1||

The Support of the Saints, O Nanak, is manifest, pervading everywhere. ||1||


ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehl:

ਮੁੰਢਹੁ ਭੁਲੇ ਮੁੰਢ ਤੇ ਕਿਥੈ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਹਥੁ ॥

मुंढहु भुले मुंढ ते किथै पाइनि हथु ॥

Munddhahu bhule munddh te kithai paaini hathu ||

Those who went astray from the Primal Being in the very beginning - where can they find refuge?

ਤਿੰਨੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥੨॥

तिंनै मारे नानका जि करण कारण समरथु ॥२॥

Tinnai maare naanakaa ji kara(nn) kaara(nn) samarathu ||2||

O Nanak, they are struck down by the All-powerful, the Cause of causes. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ੫ ॥

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:

ਲੈ ਫਾਹੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਤੁਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥

लै फाहे राती तुरहि प्रभु जाणै प्राणी ॥

Lai phaahe raatee turahi prbhu jaa(nn)ai praa(nn)ee ||

They take the noose in their hands, and go out at night to strangle others, but God knows everything, O mortal.

ਤਕਹਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਈਆ ਲੁਕਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਠਾਣੀ ॥

तकहि नारि पराईआ लुकि अंदरि ठाणी ॥

Takahi naari paraaeeaa luki anddari thaa(nn)ee ||

They spy on other men's women, concealed in their hiding places.

ਸੰਨੑੀ ਦੇਨੑਿ ਵਿਖੰਮ ਥਾਇ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਦੁ ਮਾਣੀ ॥

संन्ही देन्हि विखम थाइ मिठा मदु माणी ॥

Sannhee denhi vikhamm thaai mithaa madu maa(nn)ee ||

They break into well-protected places, and revel in sweet wine.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਪੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥

करमी आपो आपणी आपे पछुताणी ॥

Karamee aapo aapa(nn)ee aape pachhutaa(nn)ee ||

But they shall come to regret their actions - they create their own karma.

ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀ ॥੨੭॥

अजराईलु फरेसता तिल पीड़े घाणी ॥२७॥

Ajaraaeelu pharesataa til pee(rr)e ghaa(nn)ee ||27||

Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall crush them like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||27||

ਸੇਵਕ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹ ਕੇ ਸੇਈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

Sevak sache saah ke seee paravaa(nn)u ||

The servants of the True King are acceptable and approved.

ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੇ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਜਾਣ ॥੧॥

दूजा सेवनि नानका से पचि पचि मुए अजाण ॥१॥

Doojaa sevani naanakaa se pachi pachi mue ajaa(nn) ||1||

Those ignorant ones who serve duality, O Nanak, rot, waste away and die. ||1||


ਮਃ ੫ ॥

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਟਣਾ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

जो धुरि लिखिआ लेखु प्रभ मेटणा न जाइ ॥

Jo dhuri likhiaa lekhu prbh meta(nn)aa na jaai ||

That destiny which was pre-ordained by God from the very beginning cannot be erased.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਖਰੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੨॥

राम नामु धनु वखरो नानक सदा धिआइ ॥२॥

Raam naamu dhanu vakharo naanak sadaa dhiaai ||2||

The wealth of the Lord's Name is Nanak's capital; he meditates on it forever. ||2||

ਨਾਰਾਇਣਿ ਲਇਆ ਨਾਠੂੰਗੜਾ ਪੈਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਰਖੈ ॥

नाराइणि लइआ नाठूंगड़ा पैर किथै रखै ॥

Naaraai(nn)i laiaa naathoongga(rr)aa pair kithai rakhai ||

One who has received a kick from the Lord God - where can he place his foot?

ਕਰਦਾ ਪਾਪ ਅਮਿਤਿਆ ਨਿਤ ਵਿਸੋ ਚਖੈ ॥

करदा पाप अमितिआ नित विसो चखै ॥

Karadaa paap amitiaa nit viso chakhai ||

He commits countless sins, and continually eats poison.

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਭਖੈ ॥

निंदा करदा पचि मुआ विचि देही भखै ॥

Ninddaa karadaa pachi muaa vichi dehee bhakhai ||

Slandering others, he wastes away and dies; within his body, he burns.

ਸਚੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰਖੈ ॥

सचै साहिब मारिआ कउणु तिस नो रखै ॥

Sachai saahib maariaa kau(nn)u tis no rakhai ||

One who has been struck down by the True Lord and Master - who can save him now?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੈ ॥੨੮॥

नानक तिसु सरणागती जो पुरखु अलखै ॥२८॥

Naanak tisu sara(nn)aagatee jo purakhu alakhai ||28||

Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of the Unseen Lord, the Primal Being. ||28||

ਨਰਕ ਘੋਰ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣਾ ਕਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥

नरक घोर बहु दुख घणे अकिरतघणा का थानु ॥

Narak ghor bahu dukh gha(nn)e akiratagha(nn)aa kaa thaanu ||

In the most horrible hell, there is terrible pain and suffering. It is the place of the ungrateful.

ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਾਮੁ ॥੧॥

तिनि प्रभि मारे नानका होइ होइ मुए हरामु ॥१॥

Tini prbhi maare naanakaa hoi hoi mue haraamu ||1||

They are struck down by God, O Nanak, and they die a most miserable death. ||1||


ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehl:

ਅਵਖਧ ਸਭੇ ਕੀਤਿਅਨੁ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਦਾਰੂ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

अवखध सभे कीतिअनु निंदक का दारू नाहि ॥

Avakhadh sabhe keetianu ninddak kaa daaroo naahi ||

All kinds of medicines may be prepared, but there is no cure for the slanderer.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

आपि भुलाए नानका पचि पचि जोनी पाहि ॥२॥

Aapi bhulaae naanakaa pachi pachi jonee paahi ||2||

Those whom the Lord Himself misleads, O Nanak, putrefy and rot in reincarnation. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ੫ ॥

ਤੁਸਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ॥

तुसि दिता पूरै सतिगुरू हरि धनु सचु अखुटु ॥

Tusi ditaa poorai satiguroo hari dhanu sachu akhutu ||

By His Pleasure, the True Guru has blessed me with the inexhaustible wealth of the Name of the True Lord.

ਸਭਿ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਛੁਟੁ ॥

सभि अंदेसे मिटि गए जम का भउ छुटु ॥

Sabhi anddese miti gae jam kaa bhau chhutu ||

All my anxiety is ended; I am rid of the fear of death.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਤੁਟੁ ॥

काम क्रोध बुरिआईआं संगि साधू तुटु ॥

Kaam krodh buriaaeeaan sanggi saadhoo tutu ||

Sexual desire, anger and other evils have been subdued in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਹੁਇ ਮਰਸਨਿ ਬੁਟੁ ॥

विणु सचे दूजा सेवदे हुइ मरसनि बुटु ॥

Vi(nn)u sache doojaa sevade hui marasani butu ||

Those who serve another, instead of the True Lord, die unfulfilled in the end.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਨਾਮੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਟੁ ॥੨੯॥

नानक कउ गुरि बखसिआ नामै संगि जुटु ॥२९॥

Naanak kau guri bakhasiaa naamai sanggi jutu ||29||

The Guru has blessed Nanak with forgiveness; he is united with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||29||

ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਦ੍ਰਹੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਨਿਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਫਿਰੈ ਜਜਮਾਲਿਆ ॥

तपा न होवै अंद्रहु लोभी नित माइआ नो फिरै जजमालिआ ॥

Tapaa na hovai anddrhu lobhee nit maaiaa no phirai jajamaaliaa ||

He is not a penitent, who is greedy within his heart, and who constantly chases after Maya like a leper.

ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਸਤੈ ਦੀ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਲਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਿਛੋ ਦੇ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਣਿ ਤਪੈ ਪੁਤੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ॥

अगो दे सदिआ सतै दी भिखिआ लए नाही पिछो दे पछुताइ कै आणि तपै पुतु विचि बहालिआ ॥

Ago de sadiaa satai dee bhikhiaa lae naahee pichho de pachhutaai kai aa(nn)i tapai putu vichi bahaaliaa ||

When this penitent was first invited, he refused our charity; but later he repented and sent his son, who was seated in the congregation.

ਪੰਚ ਲੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਹਸਣ ਲਗੇ ਤਪਾ ਲੋਭਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥

पंच लोग सभि हसण लगे तपा लोभि लहरि है गालिआ ॥

Pancch log sabhi hasa(nn) lage tapaa lobhi lahari hai gaaliaa ||

The village elders all laughed, saying that the waves of greed have destroyed this penitent.

ਜਿਥੈ ਥੋੜਾ ਧਨੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਿਥੈ ਤਪਾ ਭਿਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਧਨਿ ਬਹੁਤੈ ਡਿਠੈ ਤਪੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

जिथै थोड़ा धनु वेखै तिथै तपा भिटै नाही धनि बहुतै डिठै तपै धरमु हारिआ ॥

Jithai tho(rr)aa dhanu vekhai tithai tapaa bhitai naahee dhani bahutai dithai tapai dharamu haariaa ||

If he sees only a little wealth, he does not bother to go there; but when he sees a lot of wealth, the penitent forsakes his vows.

ਭਾਈ ਏਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਹੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥

भाई एहु तपा न होवी बगुला है बहि साध जना वीचारिआ ॥

Bhaaee ehu tapaa na hovee bagulaa hai bahi saadh janaa veechaariaa ||

O Siblings of Destiny, he is not a penitent - he is only a stork. Sitting together, the Holy Congregation has so decided.

ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਤਪਾ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਏਤੁ ਦੋਖੈ ਤਪਾ ਦਯਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥

सत पुरख की तपा निंदा करै संसारै की उसतती विचि होवै एतु दोखै तपा दयि मारिआ ॥

Sat purakh kee tapaa ninddaa karai sanssaarai kee usatatee vichi hovai etu dokhai tapaa dayi maariaa ||

The penitent slanders the True Primal Being, and sings the praises of the material world. For this sin, he is cursed by the Lord.

ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਾ ਵੇਖੁ ਜਿ ਤਪੇ ਨੋ ਫਲੁ ਲਗਾ ਸਭੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਪੇ ਕਾ ਘਾਲਿਆ ॥

महा पुरखां की निंदा का वेखु जि तपे नो फलु लगा सभु गइआ तपे का घालिआ ॥

Mahaa purakhaan kee ninddaa kaa vekhu ji tape no phalu lagaa sabhu gaiaa tape kaa ghaaliaa ||

Behold the fruit the penitent gathers, for slandering the Great Primal Being; all his labors have gone in vain.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਪੰਚਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਪਾ ਸਦਾਏ ॥

बाहरि बहै पंचा विचि तपा सदाए ॥

Baahari bahai pancchaa vichi tapaa sadaae ||

When he sits outside among the elders, he is called a penitent;

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਤਪਾ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਏ ॥

अंदरि बहै तपा पाप कमाए ॥

Anddari bahai tapaa paap kamaae ||

But when he sits within the congregation, the penitent commits sin.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਲਾ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੰਚਾ ਨੋ ਉਘਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥

हरि अंदरला पापु पंचा नो उघा करि वेखालिआ ॥

Hari anddaralaa paapu pancchaa no ughaa kari vekhaaliaa ||

The Lord has exposed the penitent's secret sin to the elders.

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਜਮਕੰਕਰਾ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਛਡਿਆ ਏਸੁ ਤਪੇ ਨੋ ਤਿਥੈ ਖੜਿ ਪਾਇਹੁ ਜਿਥੈ ਮਹਾ ਮਹਾਂ ਹਤਿਆਰਿਆ ॥

धरम राइ जमकंकरा नो आखि छडिआ एसु तपे नो तिथै खड़ि पाइहु जिथै महा महां हतिआरिआ ॥

Dharam raai jamakankkaraa no aakhi chhadiaa esu tape no tithai kha(rr)i paaihu jithai mahaa mahaan hatiaariaa ||

The Righteous Judge of Dharma said to the Messenger of Death, ""Take this penitent and put him with the worst of the worst murderers.""

ਫਿਰਿ ਏਸੁ ਤਪੇ ਦੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਲਗਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਏਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਹੈ ਫਿਟਕਾਰਿਆ ॥

फिरि एसु तपे दै मुहि कोई लगहु नाही एहु सतिगुरि है फिटकारिआ ॥

Phiri esu tape dai muhi koee lagahu naahee ehu satiguri hai phitakaariaa ||

No one is to look at the face of this penitent again. He has been cursed by the True Guru.

ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਸੁ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

हरि कै दरि वरतिआ सु नानकि आखि सुणाइआ ॥

Hari kai dari varatiaa su naanaki aakhi su(nn)aaiaa ||

Nanak speaks and reveals what has taken place in the Court of the Lord.

ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੁ ਦਯਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥

सो बूझै जु दयि सवारिआ ॥१॥

So boojhai ju dayi savaariaa ||1||

He alone understands, who is blessed and adorned by the Lord. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

हरि भगतां हरि आराधिआ हरि की वडिआई ॥

Hari bhagataan hari aaraadhiaa hari kee vadiaaee ||

The devotees of the Lord worship and adore the Lord, and the glorious greatness of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਭਗਤ ਨਿਤ ਗਾਂਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ॥

हरि कीरतनु भगत नित गांवदे हरि नामु सुखदाई ॥

Hari keeratanu bhagat nit gaanvade hari naamu sukhadaaee ||

The Lord's devotees continually sing the Kirtan of His Praises; the Name of the Lord is the Giver of peace.

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੋ ਨਿਤ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖਸੀਅਨੁ ਨਿਤ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਈ ॥

हरि भगतां नो नित नावै दी वडिआई बखसीअनु नित चड़ै सवाई ॥

Hari bhagataan no nit naavai dee vadiaaee bakhaseeanu nit cha(rr)ai savaaee ||

The Lord ever bestows upon His devotees the glorious greatness of His Name, which increases day by day.

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਨੋ ਥਿਰੁ ਘਰੀ ਬਹਾਲਿਅਨੁ ਅਪਣੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥

हरि भगतां नो थिरु घरी बहालिअनु अपणी पैज रखाई ॥

Hari bhagataan no thiru gharee bahaalianu apa(nn)ee paij rakhaaee ||

The Lord inspires His devotees to sit, steady and stable, in the home of their inner being. He preserves their honor.

ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗਸੀ ਬਹੁ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਈ ॥

निंदकां पासहु हरि लेखा मंगसी बहु देइ सजाई ॥

Ninddakaan paasahu hari lekhaa manggasee bahu dei sajaaee ||

The Lord summons the slanderers to answer for their accounts, and He punishes them severely.

ਜੇਹਾ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਅਪਣੈ ਜੀਇ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਤੇਹੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈ ॥

जेहा निंदक अपणै जीइ कमावदे तेहो फलु पाई ॥

Jehaa ninddak apa(nn)ai jeei kamaavade teho phalu paaee ||

As the slanderers think of acting, so are the fruits they obtain.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਸਰਪਰ ਉਘੜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਬਹਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥

अंदरि कमाणा सरपर उघड़ै भावै कोई बहि धरती विचि कमाई ॥

Anddari kamaa(nn)aa sarapar ugha(rr)ai bhaavai koee bahi dharatee vichi kamaaee ||

Actions done in secrecy are sure to come to light, even if one does it underground.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥

जन नानकु देखि विगसिआ हरि की वडिआई ॥२॥

Jan naanaku dekhi vigasiaa hari kee vadiaaee ||2||

Servant Nanak blossoms forth in joy, beholding the glorious greatness of the Lord. ||2||

Pauree, Fifth Mehl:

ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਕਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰੀਐ ॥

भगत जनां का राखा हरि आपि है किआ पापी करीऐ ॥

Bhagat janaan kaa raakhaa hari aapi hai kiaa paapee kareeai ||

The Lord Himself is the Protector of His devotees; what can the sinner do to them?

ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂੜ ਗੁਮਾਨੀਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਖਾਧੀ ਮਰੀਐ ॥

गुमानु करहि मूड़ गुमानीआ विसु खाधी मरीऐ ॥

Gumaanu karahi moo(rr) gumaaneeaa visu khaadhee mareeai ||

The proud fool acts in pride, and eating his own poison, he dies.

ਆਇ ਲਗੇ ਨੀ ਦਿਹ ਥੋੜੜੇ ਜਿਉ ਪਕਾ ਖੇਤੁ ਲੁਣੀਐ ॥

आइ लगे नी दिह थोड़ड़े जिउ पका खेतु लुणीऐ ॥

Aai lage nee dih tho(rr)a(rr)e jiu pakaa khetu lu(nn)eeai ||

His few days have come to an end, and he is cut down like the crop at harvest.

ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਤੇਵੇਹੋ ਭਣੀਐ ॥

जेहे करम कमावदे तेवेहो भणीऐ ॥

Jehe karam kamaavade teveho bha(nn)eeai ||

According to one's actions, so is one spoken of.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਵਡਾ ਹੈ ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾ ਧਣੀਐ ॥੩੦॥

जन नानक का खसमु वडा है सभना दा धणीऐ ॥३०॥

Jan naanak kaa khasamu vadaa hai sabhanaa daa dha(nn)eeai ||30||

Glorious and great is the Lord and Master of servant Nanak; He is the Master of all. ||30||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Salok M: 4 ||

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

मनमुख मूलहु भुलिआ विचि लबु लोभु अहंकारु ॥

Manamukh moolahu bhuliaa vichi labu lobhu ahankkaaru ||

The self-willed manmukhs forget the Primal Lord, the Source of all; they are caught in greed and egotism.

ਝਗੜਾ ਕਰਦਿਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਦਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

झगड़ा करदिआ अनदिनु गुदरै सबदि न करहि वीचारु ॥

Jhaga(rr)aa karadiaa anadinu gudarai sabadi na karahi veechaaru ||

They pass their nights and days in conflict and struggle; they do not contemplate the Word of the Shabad.

ਸੁਧਿ ਮਤਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਈ ਬੋਲਨਿ ਸਭੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

सुधि मति करतै सभ हिरि लई बोलनि सभु विकारु ॥

Sudhi mati karatai sabh hiri laee bolani sabhu vikaaru ||

The Creator has taken away all their understanding and purity; all their speech is evil and corrupt.

ਦਿਤੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਅਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੵਾਰੁ ॥

दितै कितै न संतोखीअहि अंतरि तिसना बहु अगिआनु अंध्यारु ॥

Ditai kitai na santtokheeahi anttari tisanaa bahu agiaanu anddhyaaru ||

No matter what they are given, they are not satisfied; within their hearts there is great desire, ignorance and darkness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨਾਲੋ ਤੁਟੀ ਭਲੀ ਜਿਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੧॥

नानक मनमुखा नालो तुटी भली जिन माइआ मोह पिआरु ॥१॥

Naanak manamukhaa naalo tutee bhalee jin maaiaa moh piaaru ||1||

O Nanak, it is good to break away from the self-willed manmukhs, who have love and attachment to Maya. ||1||

ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਹੈ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

जिना अंदरि दूजा भाउ है तिन्हा गुरमुखि प्रीति न होइ ॥

Jinaa anddari doojaa bhaau hai tinhaa guramukhi preeti na hoi ||

Those whose hearts are filled with the love of duality, do not love the Gurmukhs.

ਓਹੁ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

ओहु आवै जाइ भवाईऐ सुपनै सुखु न कोइ ॥

Ohu aavai jaai bhavaaeeai supanai sukhu na koi ||

They come and go, and wander in reincarnation; even in their dreams, they find no peace.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਉਚਰੈ ਕੂੜਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

कूड़ु कमावै कूड़ु उचरै कूड़ि लगिआ कूड़ु होइ ॥

Koo(rr)u kamaavai koo(rr)u ucharai koo(rr)i lagiaa koo(rr)u hoi ||

They practice falsehood and they speak falsehood; attached to falsehood, they become false.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਖਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਇ ॥

माइआ मोहु सभु दुखु है दुखि बिनसै दुखु रोइ ॥

Maaiaa mohu sabhu dukhu hai dukhi binasai dukhu roi ||

The love of Maya is total pain; in pain they perish, and in pain they cry out.

ਨਾਨਕ ਧਾਤੁ ਲਿਵੈ ਜੋੜੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

नानक धातु लिवै जोड़ु न आवई जे लोचै सभु कोइ ॥

Naanak dhaatu livai jo(rr)u na aavaee je lochai sabhu koi ||

O Nanak, there can be no union between the love of worldliness and the love of the Lord, no matter how much everyone may desire it.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਇਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

जिन कउ पोतै पुंनु पइआ तिना गुर सबदी सुखु होइ ॥२॥

Jin kau potai punnu paiaa tinaa gur sabadee sukhu hoi ||2||

Those who have the treasure of virtuous deeds find peace through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਵੀਚਾਰਹਿ ਸੰਤ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨਾਂ ਚਾਰਿ ਵੇਦ ਕਹੰਦੇ ॥

नानक वीचारहि संत मुनि जनां चारि वेद कहंदे ॥

Naanak veechaarahi santt muni janaan chaari ved kahandde ||

O Nanak, the Saints and the silent sages think, and the four Vedas proclaim,

ਭਗਤ ਮੁਖੈ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸੇ ਵਚਨ ਹੋਵੰਦੇ ॥

भगत मुखै ते बोलदे से वचन होवंदे ॥

Bhagat mukhai te bolade se vachan hovandde ||

That whatever the Lord's devotees speak comes to pass.

ਪਰਗਟ ਪਾਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣੰਦੇ ॥

परगट पाहारै जापदे सभि लोक सुणंदे ॥

Paragat paahaarai jaapade sabhi lok su(nn)andde ||

He is revealed in His cosmic workshop; all people hear of it.

ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਨਰ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਲਿ ਖਹੰਦੇ ॥

सुखु न पाइनि मुगध नर संत नालि खहंदे ॥

Sukhu na paaini mugadh nar santt naali khahandde ||

The foolish people, who fight with the Saints, find no peace.

ਓਇ ਲੋਚਨਿ ਓਨਾ ਗੁਣਾ ਨੋ ਓਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਸੜੰਦੇ ॥

ओइ लोचनि ओना गुणा नो ओइ अहंकारि सड़ंदे ॥

Oi lochani onaa gu(nn)aa no oi ahankkaari sa(rr)andde ||

The Saints seek to bless them with virtue, but they are burning with egotism.

ਓਇ ਵੇਚਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਜਾਂ ਭਾਗ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੰਦੇ ॥

ओइ वेचारे किआ करहि जां भाग धुरि मंदे ॥

Oi vechaare kiaa karahi jaan bhaag dhuri mandde ||

What can those wretched ones do? Their evil destiny was pre-ordained.

ਜੋ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਸੰਦੇ ॥

जो मारे तिनि पारब्रहमि से किसै न संदे ॥

Jo maare tini paarabrhami se kisai na sandde ||

Those who are struck down by the Supreme Lord God do not belong to anyone.

ਵੈਰੁ ਕਰਨਿ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਧਰਮਿ ਨਿਆਇ ਪਚੰਦੇ ॥

वैरु करनि निरवैर नालि धरमि निआइ पचंदे ॥

Vairu karani niravair naali dharami niaai pachandde ||

Those who hate the One who has no hatred, are destroyed by righteous justice.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੰਤਿ ਸਰਾਪਿਆ ਸੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਭਵੰਦੇ ॥

जो जो संति सरापिआ से फिरहि भवंदे ॥

Jo jo santti saraapiaa se phirahi bhavandde ||

Those who are cursed by the Saints wander around lost.

ਪੇਡੁ ਮੁੰਢਾਹੂ ਕਟਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਡਾਲ ਸੁਕੰਦੇ ॥੩੧॥

पेडु मुंढाहू कटिआ तिसु डाल सुकंदे ॥३१॥

Pedu munddhaahoo katiaa tisu daal sukandde ||31||

When the tree is cut off at its roots, the branches wither and die. ||31||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Shalok, Fifth Mehl:

ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਭੰਨਣ ਘੜਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥

गुर नानक हरि नामु द्रिड़ाइआ भंनण घड़ण समरथु ॥

Gur naanak hari naamu dri(rr)aaiaa bhanna(nn) gha(rr)a(nn) samarathu ||

Guru Nanak implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me; He is All-powerful, to create and destroy.

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਮਾਲਹਿ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ਲਥੁ ॥੧॥

प्रभु सदा समालहि मित्र तू दुखु सबाइआ लथु ॥१॥

Prbhu sadaa samaalahi mitr too dukhu sabaaiaa lathu ||1||

Remember God forever, my friend, and all your suffering will disappear. ||1||


ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehl:

ਖੁਧਿਆਵੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਲਾਜ ਕੁਲਾਜ ਕੁਬੋਲੁ ॥

खुधिआवंतु न जाणई लाज कुलाज कुबोलु ॥

Khudhiaavanttu na jaa(nn)aee laaj kulaaj kubolu ||

The hungry person does not care about honor, dishonor or harsh words.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥

नानकु मांगै नामु हरि करि किरपा संजोगु ॥२॥

Naanaku maangai naamu hari kari kirapaa sanjjogu ||2||

Nanak begs for the Name of the Lord; please grant Your Grace, and unite me with Yourself. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਜੇਵੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦਾ ਤੇਵੇਹੇ ਫਲਤੇ ॥

Jevehe karam kamaavadaa tevehe phalate ||

According to the deeds which one does, so are the fruits one obtains.

ਚਬੇ ਤਤਾ ਲੋਹ ਸਾਰੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੰਘੈ ਪਲਤੇ ॥

चबे तता लोह सारु विचि संघै पलते ॥

Chabe tataa loh saaru vichi sangghai palate ||

If someone chews on red-hot iron, his throat will be burned.

ਘਤਿ ਗਲਾਵਾਂ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੂਤਿ ਅਮਲ ਤੇ ॥

घति गलावां चालिआ तिनि दूति अमल ते ॥

Ghati galaavaan chaaliaa tini dooti amal te ||

The halter is put around his neck and he is led away, because of the evil deeds he has done.

ਕਾਈ ਆਸ ਨ ਪੁੰਨੀਆ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਹਿਰਤੇ ॥

काई आस न पुंनीआ नित पर मलु हिरते ॥

Kaaee aas na punneeaa nit par malu hirate ||

None of his desires are fulfilled; he continually steals the filth of others.

ਕੀਆ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਕਿਰਤਘਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਫਿਰਤੇ ॥

कीआ न जाणै अकिरतघण विचि जोनी फिरते ॥

Keeaa na jaa(nn)ai akiratagha(nn) vichi jonee phirate ||

The ungrateful wretch does not appreciate what he has been given; he wanders lost in reincarnation.

ਸਭੇ ਧਿਰਾਂ ਨਿਖੁਟੀਅਸੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਈਅਸੁ ਧਰ ਤੇ ॥

सभे धिरां निखुटीअसु हिरि लईअसु धर ते ॥

Sabhe dhiraan nikhuteeasu hiri laeeasu dhar te ||

He loses all support, when the Support of the Lord is taken away from him.

ਵਿਝਣ ਕਲਹ ਨ ਦੇਵਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਲਇਆ ਕਰਤੇ ॥

विझण कलह न देवदा तां लइआ करते ॥

Vijha(nn) kalah na devadaa taan laiaa karate ||

He does not let the embers of strife die down, and so the Creator destroys him.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰਤੇ ਅਹੰਮੇਉ ਝੜਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਪੜਤੇ ॥੩੨॥

जो जो करते अहमेउ झड़ि धरती पड़ते ॥३२॥

Jo jo karate ahammeu jha(rr)i dharatee pa(rr)ate ||32||

Those who indulge in egotism crumble and fall to the ground. ||32||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुरमुखि गिआनु बिबेक बुधि होइ ॥

Guramukhi giaanu bibek budhi hoi ||

The Gurmukh is blessed with spiritual wisdom and a discerning intellect.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥

हरि गुण गावै हिरदै हारु परोइ ॥

Hari gu(nn) gaavai hiradai haaru paroi ||

He sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and weaves this garland into his heart.

ਪਵਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

पवितु पावनु परम बीचारी ॥

Pavitu paavanu param beechaaree ||

He becomes the purest of the pure, a being of supreme understanding.

ਜਿ ਓਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੀ ॥

जि ओसु मिलै तिसु पारि उतारी ॥

Ji osu milai tisu paari utaaree ||

Whoever he meets, he saves and carries across.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

अंतरि हरि नामु बासना समाणी ॥

Anttari hari naamu baasanaa samaa(nn)ee ||

The fragrance of the Lord's Name permeates his being deep within.

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਹਾ ਉਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

हरि दरि सोभा महा उतम बाणी ॥

Hari dari sobhaa mahaa utam baa(nn)ee ||

He is honored in the Court of the Lord, and his speech is the most sublime.

ਜਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥

जि पुरखु सुणै सु होइ निहालु ॥

Ji purakhu su(nn)ai su hoi nihaalu ||

Those who hear him are delighted.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥੧॥

नानक सतिगुर मिलिऐ पाइआ नामु धनु मालु ॥१॥

Naanak satigur miliai paaiaa naamu dhanu maalu ||1||

O Nanak, meeting the True Guru, one obtains the wealth and property of the Naam. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

सतिगुर के जीअ की सार न जापै कि पूरै सतिगुर भावै ॥

Satigur ke jeea kee saar na jaapai ki poorai satigur bhaavai ||

The sublime state of the True Guru is not known; no one knows what pleases the Perfect True Guru.

ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੋ ਲੋਚੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਖੁਸੀ ਆਵੈ ॥

गुरसिखां अंदरि सतिगुरू वरतै जो सिखां नो लोचै सो गुर खुसी आवै ॥

Gurasikhaan anddari satiguroo varatai jo sikhaan no lochai so gur khusee aavai ||

Deep within the hearts of His GurSikhs, the True Guru is pervading. The Guru is pleased with those who long for His Sikhs.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੈ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਨਿ ਸੁ ਜਪੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਸਚਾ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

सतिगुरु आखै सु कार कमावनि सु जपु कमावहि गुरसिखां की घाल सचा थाइ पावै ॥

Satiguru aakhai su kaar kamaavani su japu kamaavahi gurasikhaan kee ghaal sachaa thaai paavai ||

As the True Guru directs them, they do their work and chant their prayers. The True Lord accepts the service of His GurSikhs.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਲੋੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

विणु सतिगुर के हुकमै जि गुरसिखां पासहु कमु कराइआ लोड़े तिसु गुरसिखु फिरि नेड़ि न आवै ॥

Vi(nn)u satigur ke hukamai ji gurasikhaan paasahu kammu karaaiaa lo(rr)e tisu gurasikhu phiri ne(rr)i na aavai ||

But those who want the GurSikhs to work for them, without the Order of the True Guru - the Guru's Sikhs shall not come near them again.

ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਕੋ ਜੀਉ ਲਾਇ ਘਾਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

गुर सतिगुर अगै को जीउ लाइ घालै तिसु अगै गुरसिखु कार कमावै ॥

Gur satigur agai ko jeeu laai ghaalai tisu agai gurasikhu kaar kamaavai ||

One who works diligently for the Guru, the True Guru - the GurSikhs work for him.

ਜਿ ਠਗੀ ਆਵੈ ਠਗੀ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

जि ठगी आवै ठगी उठि जाइ तिसु नेड़ै गुरसिखु मूलि न आवै ॥

Ji thagee aavai thagee uthi jaai tisu ne(rr)ai gurasikhu mooli na aavai ||

One who comes to deceive, who rises up and goes out to deceive - the GurSikhs shall never come near him.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

ब्रहमु बीचारु नानकु आखि सुणावै ॥

Brhamu beechaaru naanaku aakhi su(nn)aavai ||

Nanak proclaims and announces this wisdom of God.

ਜਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਏ ਸੋ ਜੰਤੁ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

जि विणु सतिगुर के मनु मंने कमु कराए सो जंतु महा दुखु पावै ॥२॥

Ji vi(nn)u satigur ke manu manne kammu karaae so janttu mahaa dukhu paavai ||2||

One who is not pleasing to the Mind of the True Guru may do his deeds, but that being will only suffer in terrible pain. ||2||

Pauree:

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਤਿ ਵਡਾ ਤੁਹਿ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਤੂੰ ਵਡ ਵਡੇ ॥

तूं सचा साहिबु अति वडा तुहि जेवडु तूं वड वडे ॥

Toonn sachaa saahibu ati vadaa tuhi jevadu toonn vad vade ||

O True Lord and Master, You are so very great. As great as You are, You are the greatest of the great.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਛਡੇ ॥

जिसु तूं मेलहि सो तुधु मिलै तूं आपे बखसि लैहि लेखा छडे ॥

Jisu toonn melahi so tudhu milai toonn aape bakhasi laihi lekhaa chhade ||

He alone is united with You, whom You unite with Yourself. You Yourself bless and forgive us, and tear up our accounts.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਮਨੁ ਗਡ ਗਡੇ ॥

जिस नो तूं आपि मिलाइदा सो सतिगुरु सेवे मनु गड गडे ॥

Jis no toonn aapi milaaidaa so satiguru seve manu gad gade ||

One whom You unite with Yourself, whole-heartedly serves the True Guru.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਤੂ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਚੰਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਡੇ ॥

तूं सचा साहिबु सचु तू सभु जीउ पिंडु चमु तेरा हडे ॥

Toonn sachaa saahibu sachu too sabhu jeeu pinddu chammu teraa hade ||

You are the True One, the True Lord and Master; my soul, body, flesh and bones are all Yours.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਚਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਆਸ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡ ਵਡੇ ॥੩੩॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ ॥

जिउ भावै तिउ रखु तूं सचिआ नानक मनि आस तेरी वड वडे ॥३३॥१॥ सुधु ॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu rakhu toonn sachiaa naanak mani aas teree vad vade ||33||1|| sudhu ||

If it pleases You, then save me, True Lord. Nanak places the hopes of his mind in You alone, O greatest of the great! ||33||1|| Sudh ||
