Proclaim that you will not associate with evil people; celebrate victory with your friends.

Surrender mind and body to the Lord your Friend; this is the most excellent pleasure.

They slap their faces and pull their hair out.

But if they chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they shall be absorbed into it.

O my mind, do not waver or walk on the crooked path; take the straight and true path.

The terrible tiger is behind you, and the pool of fire is ahead.

सहसै जीअरा परि रहिओ मा कउ अवरु न ढंगु ॥
Sahasai jeearaa pari rahio maa kau avaru na dhanggu ||
My soul is skeptical and doubtful, but I cannot see any other way to go.

Naanak guramukhi chhuteeai hari preetam siu sanggu ||7||
O Nanak, as Gurmukh, dwell with your Beloved Lord, and you shall be saved. ||7||

Baaghu marai manu maareeai jisu satigur deekhiaa hoi ||
The tiger is killed, and the mind is killed, through the Teachings of the True Guru.

Aapu pachhaa(nn)ai hari milai bahu(rr)i na mara(nn)aa hoi ||
One who understands himself, meets with the Lord, and never dies again.

Keecha(rr)i haathu na boodaee ekaa nadari nihaali ||
One who sees the One and Only Lord with his eyes - his hands shall not get muddy and dirty.

Naanak guramukhi ubare guru saravaru sachee paali ||8||
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; the Guru has surrounded the ocean with the embankment of Truth. ||8||

अगनि मरै जलु लोड़ि लहु विणु गुर निधि जलु नाहि ॥
Agani marai jalu lo(rr)i lahu vi(nn)u gur nidhi jalu naahi ||
If you wish to put out the fire, then look for water; without the Guru, the ocean of water is not found.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

Janami marai bharamaaeeai je lakh karam kamaahi ||
You shall continue to wander lost in reincarnation through birth and death, even if you do thousands of other deeds.

Jamu jaagaati na lagaee je chalai satigur bhaai ||
But you shall not be taxed by the Messenger of Death, if you walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

Naanak niramalu amar padu guru hari melai melaai ||9||

The crow rubs and washes itself in the mud puddle.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਅਵਗੁਣੀ ਚਿੰਜੁ ਭਰੀ ਗੰਧੀ ਆਇ ॥
मनु तनु मैला अवगुणी चिंजु भरी गंधी आइ ॥
Manu tanu mailaa avagu(nn)ee chinjju bharee ganddhee aai ||
Its mind and body are polluted with its own mistakes and demerits, and its beak is filled with dirt.

Saravaru hanssi na jaa(nn)iaa kaag kupankkhee sanggi ||
The swan in the pool associated with the crow, not knowing that it was evil.

ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਐਸੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
साकत सिउ ऐसी प्रीति है बूझहु गिआनी रंगि ॥
Saakat siu aisee preeti hai boojhahu giaanee ranggi ||
Such is the love of the faithless cynic; understand this, O spiritually wise ones, through love and devotion.

ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥
संत सभा जैकारु करि गुरमुखि करम कमाउ ॥
Santt sabhaa jaikaaru kari guramukhi karam kamaau ||
So proclaim the victory of the Society of the Saints, and act as Gurmukh.

Niramalu nhaava(nn)u naanakaa guru teerathu dareeaau ||10||
Immaculate and pure is that cleansing bath, O Nanak, at the sacred shrine of the Guru's river. ||10||

Janame kaa phalu kiaa ga(nn)ee jaan hari bhagati na bhaau ||
What should I account as the rewards of this human life, if one does not feel love and devotion to the Lord?

ਪੈਧਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
पैधा खाधा बादि है जां मनि दूजा भाउ ॥
Paidhaa khaadhaa baadi hai jaan mani doojaa bhaau ||
Wearing clothes and eating food is useless, if the mind is filled with the love of duality.

ਵੇਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਝੂਠੁ ਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਲਾਉ ॥

Vekha(nn)u suna(nn)aa jhoothu hai mukhi jhoothaa aalaau ||
Seeing and hearing is false, if one speaks lies.

नानक नामु सलाहि तू होरु हउमै आवउ जाउ ॥११॥
Naanak naamu salaahi too horu haumai aavau jaau ||11||
O Nanak, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord; everything else is coming and going in egotism. ||11||

Haini virale naahee gha(nn)e phail phaka(rr)u sanssaaru ||12||
The Saints are few and far between; everything else in the world is just a pompous show. ||12||

O Nanak, one who is struck by the Lord dies instantaneously; the power to live is lost.

If someone dies by such a stroke, then he is accepted.

Jis no laae tisu lagai lagee taa paravaa(nn)u ||
He alone is struck, who is struck by the Lord; after such a stroke, he is approved.

Piram paikaamu na nikalai laaiaa tini sujaa(nn)i ||13||
The arrow of love, shot by the All-knowing Lord, cannot be pulled out. ||13||

Joining the five elements together, the Lord made a false cover.

The supreme light shines forth, and the celestial song vibrates and resounds. ||14||

Manahu ji anddhe ghoop kahiaa biradu na jaa(nn)anee ||
Those who are totally blind in their minds, do not have the integrity to keep their word.

Mani anddhai undhai kaval disani khare karoop ||
With their blind minds, and their upside-down heart-lotus, they look totally ugly.

इकि कहि जाणनि कहिआ बुझनि ते नर सुघड़ सरूप ॥
Iki kahi jaa(nn)ani kahiaa bujhani te nar sugha(rr) saroop ||
Some know how to speak and understand what they are told. Those people are wise and good-looking.

इकना नादु न बेदु न गीअ रसु रसु कसु न जाणंति ॥
Ikanaa naadu na bedu na geea rasu rasu kasu na jaa(nn)antti ||
Some do not know the Sound-current of the Naad, spiritual wisdom or the joy of song. They do not even understand good and bad.

इकना सिधि न बुधि न अकलि सर अखर का भेउ न लहंति ॥
Ikanaa sidhi na budhi na akali sar akhar kaa bheu na lahantti ||
Some have no idea of perfection, wisdom or understanding; they know nothing about the mystery of the Word.

नानक ते नर असलि खर जि बिनु गुण गरबु करंत ॥१५॥
Naanak te nar asali khar ji binu gu(nn) garabu karantt ||15||
O Nanak, those people are really donkeys; they have no virtue or merit, but still, they are very proud. ||15||

Such a Brahmin is worthy of being worshipped. ||16||

Such a Kshatriya is accepted in the Court of the Lord.

Tanu na tapaai tanoor jiu baala(nn)u had na baali ||
Do not heat your body like a furnace, or burn your bones like firewood.

सिरि पैरी किआ फेड़िआ अंदरि पिरी सम्हालि ॥१८॥
Siri pairee kiaa phe(rr)iaa anddari piree samhaali ||18||
What have your head and feet done wrong? See your Husband Lord within yourself. ||18||

Sabhanee ghatee sahu vasai sah binu ghatu na koi ||
God the Cosmic Husband dwells within all hearts; without Him, there is no heart at all.

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are the happy, virtuous soul-brides; the Lord is revealed to them. ||19||

False is friendship with the false and greedy. False is its foundation.

Mara(nn)u na jaapai mooliaa aavai kitai thaai ||21||
O Moollah, no one knows where death shall strike. ||21||

They grope in the darkness, in the love of duality. ||22||

Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom; without Dharma, there is no meditation.

Without Truth, there is no credit; without capital, there is no balance. ||23||

Raamu jhurai dal melavai anttari balu adhikaar ||
Raam Chand, sad at heart, assembled his army and forces.

Banttar kee sainaa seveeai mani tani jujhu apaaru ||
The army of monkeys was at his service; his mind and body became eager for war.

ਸੀਤਾ ਲੈ ਗਇਆ ਦਹਸਿਰੋ ਲਛਮਣੁ ਮੂਓ ਸਰਾਪਿ ॥
सीता लै गइआ दहसिरो लछमणु मूओ सरापि ॥
Seetaa lai gaiaa dahasiro lachhama(nn)u mooo saraapi ||
Raawan captured his wife Sita, and Lachhman was cursed to die.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥੨੫॥
नानक करता करणहारु करि वेखै थापि उथापि ॥२५॥
Naanak karataa kara(nn)ahaaru kari vekhai thaapi uthaapi ||25||
O Nanak, the Creator Lord is the Doer of all; He watches over all, and destroys what He has created. ||25||

Man mahi jhoorai raamachanddu seetaa lachhama(nn) jogu ||
In his mind, Raam Chand mourned for Sita and Lachhman.

ਹਣਵੰਤਰੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥

Ha(nn)avanttaru aaraadhiaa aaiaa kari sanjjogu ||
Then, he remembered Hanuman the monkey-god, who came to him.

Bhoolaa daitu na samajhaee tini prbh keee kaam ||
The misguided demon did not understand that God is the Doer of deeds.

नानक वेपरवाहु सो किरतु न मिटई राम ॥२६॥
Naanak veparavaahu so kiratu na mitaee raam ||26||
O Nanak, the actions of the Self-existent Lord cannot be erased. ||26||

The city of Lahore suffered terrible destruction for four hours. ||27||

Udosaahai kiaa neesaanee toti na aavai annee ||
What are the signs of a prosperous person? His stores of food never run out.

Satee rannee ghare siaapaa rovani koo(rr)ee kammee ||
All the women of his home shout and cry over useless things.

Jo levai so devai naahee khate damm sahammee ||29||
Whatever he takes, he does not give back. Seeking to earn more and more, he is troubled and uneasy. ||29||

What pain has burnt you, and made your body black? O Nanak, my body is battered.

Jitu dithai tanu paraphu(rr)ai cha(rr)ai chavaga(nn)i vannu ||30||
Seeing it, my body blossomed forth, and I was blessed with a deep and beautiful color. ||30||

No one lives long enough to accomplish all he wishes.

Only the spiritually wise live forever; they are honored for their intuitive awareness.

Bit by bit, life passes away, even though the mortal tries to hold it back.

O Nanak, unto whom should we complain? Death takes one's life away without anyone's consent. ||31||

Dosu na deahu raai no mati chalai jaan budhaa hovai ||
Do not blame the Sovereign Lord; when someone grows old, his intellect leaves him.

The blind man talks and babbles, and then falls into the ditch. ||32||

पूरे का कीआ सभ किछु पूरा घटि वधि किछु नाही ॥
Poore kaa keeaa sabh kichhu pooraa ghati vadhi kichhu naahee ||
All that the Perfect Lord does is perfect; there is not too little, or too much.

Naanak guramukhi aisaa jaa(nn)ai poore maanhi samaanhee ||33||
O Nanak, knowing this as Gurmukh, the mortal merges into the Perfect Lord God. ||33||

Abhiaagat eh na aakheeahi jin kai man mahi bharamu ||
Do not call the wandering beggars holy men, if their minds are filled with doubt.

Tis kaa bhojanu naanakaa viralaa paae koi ||2||
- how rare are those who have the opportunity, O Nanak, to give food to such a person. ||2||

Navaa khanddaa vichi jaa(nn)eeaa apane chaj veechaar ||3||
I could be famous throughout the nine regions of the earth, for my wisdom and thoughtful contemplation. ||3||

Brhama(nn) kailee ghaatu kan(ny)akaa a(nn)achaaree kaa dhaanu ||
If a Brahmin kills a cow or a female infant, and accepts the offerings of an evil person,

Phitak phitakaa ko(rr)u badeeaa sadaa sadaa abhimaanu ||
He is cursed with the leprosy of curses and criticism; he is forever and ever filled with egotistical pride.

Paahi ete jaahi veesari naanakaa iku naamu ||
One who forgets the Naam, O Nanak, is covered by countless sins.

Sabh budhee jaaleeahi iku rahai tatu giaanu ||4||
Let all wisdom be burnt away, except for the essence of spiritual wisdom. ||4||

Maathai jo dhuri likhiaa su meti na sakai koi ||
No one can erase that primal destiny written upon one's forehead.

नानक जो लिखिआ सो वरतदा सो बूझै जिस नो नदरि होइ ॥५॥
Naanak jo likhiaa so varatadaa so boojhai jis no nadari hoi ||5||
O Nanak, whatever is written there, comes to pass. He alone understands, who is blessed by God's Grace. ||5||

Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and become attached to greed and fraud,

Dhanddhaa maaiaa moha(nn)ee anttari tisanaa agi ||
Are engrossed in the entanglements of Maya the enticer, with the fire of desire within them.

ਜਿਨੑਾ ਵੇਲਿ ਨ ਤੂੰਬੜੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਠਗੇ ਠਗਿ ॥

Jinhaa veli na toombba(rr)ee maaiaa thage thagi ||
Those who, like the pumpkin vine, are too stubborn climb the trellis, are cheated by Maya the cheater.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਅਹਿ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਹੀ ਵਗਿ ਸਗਿ ॥
मनमुख बंन्हि चलाईअहि ना मिलही वगि सगि ॥
Manamukh bannhi chalaaeeahi naa milahee vagi sagi ||
The self-willed manmukhs are bound and gagged and led away; the dogs do not join the herd of cows.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

Aapi bhulaae bhuleeai aape meli milaai ||
The Lord Himself misleads the misguided ones, and He Himself unites them in His Union.

Naanak guramukhi chhuteeai je chalai satigur bhaai ||6||
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved; they walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||6||

I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, and sing the Praises of the True Lord.

Naanak sachaa eku daru beebhaa parahari aahi ||7||
O Nanak, the One Lord alone is True; stay away from all other doors. ||7||

O Nanak, wherever I go, I find the True Lord.

जह देखा तह एकु है गुरमुखि परगटु होइ ॥८॥
Jah dekhaa tah eku hai guramukhi paragatu hoi ||8||
Wherever I look, I see the One Lord. He reveals Himself to the Gurmukh. ||8||

Dookh visaara(nn)u sabadu hai je manni vasaae koi ||
The Word of the Shabad is the Dispeller of sorrow, if one enshrines it in the mind.

गुर किरपा ते मनि वसै करम परापति होइ ॥९॥
Gur kirapaa te mani vasai karam paraapati hoi ||9||
By Guru's Grace, it dwells in the mind; by God's Mercy, it is obtained. ||9||

Naanak hau hau karate khapi mue khooha(nn)i lakh asankkh ||
O Nanak, acting in egotism, countless thousands have wasted away to death.

Satigur mile su ubare saachai sabadi alankkh ||10||
Those who meet with the True Guru are saved, through the Shabad, the True Word of the Inscrutable Lord. ||10||

Gur sabadee hari mani vasai maaiaa kee bhukh jaai ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord abides in the mind, and the hunger for Maya departs.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਊਜਲੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
से जन निरमल ऊजले जि गुरमुखि नामि समाइ ॥
Se jan niramal ujale ji guramukhi naami samaai ||
Immaculate and pure are those humble beings, who, as Gurmukh, merge in the Naam.

Bahu ras saala(nn)e savaaradee khat ras meethe paai ||
She prepares and offers to him all sorts of sweet delicacies and dishes of all flavors.

Tiu baa(nn)ee bhagat salaahade hari naamai chitu laai ||
In the same way, the devotees praise the Word of the Guru's Bani, and focus their consciousness on the Lord's Name.

मनु तनु धनु आगै राखिआ सिरु वेचिआ गुर आगै जाइ ॥
Manu tanu dhanu aagai raakhiaa siru vechiaa gur aagai jaai ||
They place mind, body and wealth in offering before the Guru, and sell their heads to Him.

Bhai bhagatee bhagat bahu lochade prbh lochaa poori milaai ||
In the Fear of God, His devotees yearn for His devotional worship; God fulfills their desires, and merges them with Himself.

Blessed, blessed are they, in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, O Nanak, who walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||12||

Kaam krodhi manu hiri laiaa manamukh anddhaa loi ||
The self-willed manmukh is blind in the world; his mind is lured away by sexual desire and anger.

They receive the wealth of the Naam; their treasures are overflowing.

Hari gu(nn) baa(nn)ee ucharahi anttu na paaraavaaru ||
Through the Word of the Guru's Bani, they utter the Glorious Praises of the Lord, whose end and limitations cannot be found.

Naanak sabh kaara(nn) karataa karai vekhai sirajanahaaru ||15||
O Nanak, the Creator is the Doer of all; the Creator Lord beholds all. ||15||

Guramukhi anttari sahaju hai manu cha(rr)iaa dasavai aakaasi ||
Within the Gurmukh is intuitive peace and poise; his mind ascends to the Tenth Plane of the Akaashic Ethers.

तिथै ऊंघ न भुख है हरि अम्रित नामु सुख वासु ॥
Tithai ungh na bhukh hai hari ammmrit naamu sukh vaasu ||
No one is sleepy or hungry there; they dwell in the peace of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.

नानक दुखु सुखु विआपत नही जिथै आतम राम प्रगासु ॥१६॥
Naanak dukhu sukhu viaapat nahee jithai aatam raam prgaasu ||16||
O Nanak, pain and pleasure do not afflict anyone, where the Light of the Lord, the Supreme Soul, illuminates. ||16||

Kaam krodh kaa chola(rr)aa sabh gali aae paai ||
All have come, wearing the robes of sexual desire and anger.

इकि उपजहि इकि बिनसि जांहि हुकमे आवै जाइ ॥
Iki upajahi iki binasi jaanhi hukame aavai jaai ||
Some are born, and some pass away. They come and go according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

Jamma(nn)u mara(nn)u na chukaee ranggu lagaa doojai bhaai ||
Their comings and goings in reincarnation do not end; they are imbued with the love of duality.

Banddhani banddhi bhavaaeeanu kara(nn)aa kachhoo na jaai ||17||
Bound in bondage, they are made to wander, and they cannot do anything about it. ||17||

Jin kau kirapaa dhaareeanu tinaa satiguru miliaa aai ||
Those, upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy, come and meet the True Guru.

सतिगुरि मिले उलटी भई मरि जीविआ सहजि सुभाइ ॥
Satiguri mile ulatee bhaee mari jeeviaa sahaji subhaai ||
Meeting with the True Guru, they turn away from the world; they remain dead while still alive, with intuitive peace and poise.

Naanak bhagatee ratiaa hari hari naami samaai ||18||
O Nanak, the devotees are imbued with the Lord; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||18||

Manamukh chancchal mati hai anttari bahutu chaturaaee ||
The intellect of the self-willed manmukh is fickle; he is very tricky and clever within.

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਰਤਿਆ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਆ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
कीता करतिआ बिरथा गइआ इकु तिलु थाइ न पाई ॥
Keetaa karatiaa birathaa gaiaa iku tilu thaai na paaee ||
Whatever he has done, and all that he does, is useless. Not even an iota of it is acceptable.

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਬੀਜਦੇ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਾਈ ॥

Punn daanu jo beejade sabh dharam raai kai jaaee ||
The charity and generosity he pretends to give will be judged by the Righteous Judge of Dharma.

बिनु सतिगुरू जमकालु न छोडई दूजै भाइ खुआई ॥
Binu satiguroo jamakaalu na chhodaee doojai bhaai khuaaee ||
Without the True Guru, the Messenger of Death does not leave the mortal alone; he is ruined by the love of duality.

जोबनु जांदा नदरि न आवई जरु पहुचै मरि जाई ॥
Jobanu jaandaa nadari na aavaee jaru pahuchai mari jaaee ||
Youth slips away imperceptibly, old age comes, and then he dies.

पुतु कलतु मोहु हेतु है अंति बेली को न सखाई ॥
Putu kalatu mohu hetu hai antti belee ko na sakhaaee ||
The mortal is caught in love and emotional attachment to children and spouse, but none of them will be his helper and support in the end.

Satiguru seve so sukhu paae naau vasai mani aaee ||
Whoever serves the True Guru finds peace; the Name comes to abide in the mind.

Naanak se vade vadabhaagee ji guramukhi naami samaaee ||19||
O Nanak, great and very fortunate are those who, as Gurmukh, are absorbed in the Naam. ||19||

The self-willed manmukhs do not even think of the Name; without the Name, they cry in pain.

Aatamaa raamu na poojanee doojai kiu sukhu hoi ||
They do not worship the Lord, the Supreme Soul; how can they find peace in duality?

ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਾਢਹਿ ਧੋਇ ॥
हउमै अंतरि मैलु है सबदि न काढहि धोइ ॥
Haumai anttari mailu hai sabadi na kaadhahi dhoi ||
They are filled with the filth of egotism; they do not wash it away with the Word of the Shabad.

Onaa aapa(nn)ee anddari sudhi nahee gur bachani na karahi visaasu ||
They do not know their own inner being, and they have no faith in the Guru's Word.

The antidote to this poisonous venom is the Name of the Lord; the Guru places the magic spell of the Shabad into the mouth.

Whoever directs hatred against the Guru, who has no hatred at all, only sets his own home on fire.

Anger and egotism are within him night and day; he burns, and suffers constant pain.

Bikhu maaiaa kaara(nn)i bharamade phiri ghari ghari pati gavaai ||
For the sake of the poison of Maya, they wander from house to house, and lose their honor.

Besuaa kere poot jiu pitaa naamu tisu jaai ||
They are like the son of a prostitute, who does not know the name of his father.

Hari hari naamu na chetanee karatai aapi khuaai ||
They do not remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; the Creator Himself brings them to ruin.

The Lord showers His Mercy upon the Gurmukhs, and reunites the separated ones with Himself.

Naami lage se ubare binu naavai jam puri jaanhi ||
Those who are attached to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are saved; without the Name, they must go to the City of Death.

Chinttaa dhaavat rahi gae taan mani bhaiaa ananddu ||
When anxiety and wanderings come to an end, the mind becomes happy.

By Guru's Grace, the soul-bride understands, and then she sleeps without worry.

Aithai othai manneeani hari naami lage vaapaari ||
Are honored, here and hereafter; they are dedicated to the business of the Lord's Name.

Guramukhi sabadi si(ny)aapade titu saachai darabaari ||
Through the Word of the Shabad, the Gurmukhs gain recognition in that Court of the True Lord.

Sachaa saudaa kharachu sachu anttari piramu piaaru ||
The True Name is their merchandise, the True Name is their expenditure; the Love of their Beloved fills their inner beings.

Jamakaalu ne(rr)i na aavaee aapi bakhase karataari ||
The Messenger of Death does not even approach them; the Creator Lord Himself forgives them.

नानक नाम रते से धनवंत हैनि निरधनु होरु संसारु ॥२६॥
Naanak naam rate se dhanavantt haini niradhanu horu sanssaaru ||26||
O Nanak, they alone are wealthy, who are imbued with the Naam; the rest of the world is poor. ||26||

Jan kee tek hari naamu hari binu naavai thavar na thaau ||
The Lord's Name is the Support of the Lord's humble servants. Without the Lord's Name, the there is no other place, no place of rest.

Guramatee naau mani vasai sahaje sahaji samaau ||
Following the Guru's Teachings, the Name abides in the mind, and one is intuitively, automatically absorbed in the Lord.

Vadabhaagee naamu dhiaaiaa ahinisi laagaa bhaau ||
Those with great good fortune meditate on the Naam; night and day, they embrace love for the Name.

Lakh chauraaseeh medanee tisanaa jalatee kare pukaar ||
The 8.4 million species of beings burn in desire and cry in pain.

All this show of emotional attachment to Maya shall not go with you at that very last instant.

वडभागी सतिगुरु पाइआ बूझिआ ब्रहमु बिचारु ॥
Vadabhaagee satiguru paaiaa boojhiaa brhamu bichaaru ||
By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, and comes to understand the contemplation of God.

Tisanaa agani sabh bujhi gaee jan naanak hari uri dhaari ||28||
The fire of desire is totally extinguished, O servant Nanak, enshrining the Lord within the heart. ||28||

Asee khate bahutu kamaavade anttu na paaraavaaru ||
I make so many mistakes, there is no end or limit to them.

O Dear Lord, if You made an account of my mistakes, my turn to be forgiven would not even come. Please forgive me, and unite me with Yourself.

Vichhu(rr)i vichhu(rr)i jo mile satigur ke bhai bhaai ||
Those who have been separated and alienated from the Lord are united with Him again, through the Fear and the Love of the True Guru.

Janam mara(nn) nihachalu bhae guramukhi naamu dhiaai ||
They escape the cycle of birth and death, and, as Gurmukh, they meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

Gur saadhoo sanggati milai heere ratan labhannhi ||
Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Guru's Congregation, the diamonds and jewels are obtained.

Manamukh naamu na chetio dhigu jeeva(nn)u dhigu vaasu ||
The self-willed manmukhs do not even think of the Naam. Cursed are their lives, and cursed are their homes.

जिस दा दिता खाणा पैनणा सो मनि न वसिओ गुणतासु ॥
Jis daa ditaa khaa(nn)aa paina(nn)aa so mani na vasio gu(nn)ataasu ||
That Lord who gives them so much to eat and wear - they do not enshrine that Lord, the Treasure of Virtue, in their minds.

Ihu manu sabadi na bhedio kiu hovai ghar vaasu ||
This mind is not pierced by the Word of the Shabad; how can it come to dwell in its true home?

The self-willed manmukhs are like discarded brides, ruined by coming and going in the cycle of reincarnation.

Guramukhi naamu suhaagu hai masataki ma(nn)ee likhiaasu ||
The Gurmukhs are embellished and exalted by the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the jewel of destiny is engraved upon their foreheads.

हरि हरि नामु उरि धारिआ हरि हिरदै कमल प्रगासु ॥
Hari hari naamu uri dhaariaa hari hiradai kamal prgaasu ||
They enshrine the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within their hearts; the Lord illumines their heart-lotus.

Satiguru sevani aapa(nn)aa hau sad balihaaree taasu ||
I am forever a sacrifice to those who serve their True Guru.

Naanak tin mukh ujale jin anttari naamu prgaasu ||31||
O Nanak, radiant and bright are the faces of those whose inner beings are illuminated with the Light of the Naam. ||31||

सबदि मरै सोई जनु सिझै बिनु सबदै मुकति न होई ॥
Sabadi marai soee janu sijhai binu sabadai mukati na hoee ||
Those who die in the Word of the Shabad are saved. Without the Shabad, no one is liberated.

भेख करहि बहु करम विगुते भाइ दूजै परज विगोई ॥
Bhekh karahi bahu karam vigute bhaai doojai paraj vigoee ||
They wear religious robes and perform all sorts of rituals, but they are ruined; in the love of duality, their world is ruined.

नानक बिनु सतिगुर नाउ न पाईऐ जे सउ लोचै कोई ॥३२॥
Naanak binu satigur naau na paaeeai je sau lochai koee ||32||
O Nanak, without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, even though one may long for it hundreds of times. ||32||

Hari kaa naau ati vad uchaa uchee hoo uchaa hoee ||
The Name of the Lord is utterly great, lofty and high, the highest of the high.

No one can climb up to it, even though one may long for it, hundreds of times.

Mukhi sanjjam hachhaa na hovaee kari bhekh bhavai sabh koee ||
Speaking about self-discipline, no one become pure; everyone walks around wearing religious robes.

Gur kee pau(rr)ee jaai cha(rr)ai karami paraapati hoee ||
Those blessed by the karma of good deeds go and climb the ladder of the Guru.

Anttari aai vasai gur sabadu veechaarai koi ||
The Lord comes and dwells within that one who contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

Naanak sabadi marai manu maaneeai saache saachee soi ||33||
O Nanak, when someone dies in the Word of the Shabad, the mind is pleased and appeased. True is the reputation of those who are true. ||33||

माइआ मोहु दुखु सागरु है बिखु दुतरु तरिआ न जाइ ॥
Maaiaa mohu dukhu saagaru hai bikhu dutaru tariaa na jaai ||
Emotional attachment to Maya is a treacherous ocean of pain and poison, which cannot be crossed.

Meraa meraa karade pachi mue haumai karat vihaai ||
Screaming, ""Mine, mine!"", they rot and die; they pass their lives in egotism.

Manamukhaa uravaaru na paaru hai adh vichi rahe lapataai ||
The self-willed manmukhs are in limbo, neither on this side, nor the other; they are stuck in the middle.

Jo dhuri likhiaa su kamaava(nn)aa kara(nn)aa kachhoo na jaai ||
They act as they are pre-destined; they cannot do anything else.

गुरमती गिआनु रतनु मनि वसै सभु देखिआ ब्रहमु सुभाइ ॥
Guramatee giaanu ratanu mani vasai sabhu dekhiaa brhamu subhaai ||
Following the Guru's Teachings, the jewel of spiritual wisdom abides in the mind, and then God is easily seen in all.

नानक सतिगुरि बोहिथै वडभागी चड़ै ते भउजलि पारि लंघाइ ॥३४॥
Naanak satiguri bohithai vadabhaagee cha(rr)ai te bhaujali paari langghaai ||34||
O Nanak, the very fortunate ones embark on the Boat of the True Guru; they are carried across the terrifying world-ocean. ||34||

बिनु सतिगुर दाता को नही जो हरि नामु देइ आधारु ॥
Binu satigur daataa ko nahee jo hari naamu dei aadhaaru ||
Without the True Guru, there is no giver who can bestow the Support of the Lord's Name.

Gur kirapaa te naau mani vasai sadaa rahai uri dhaari ||
By Guru's Grace, the Name comes to dwell in the mind; keep it enshrined in your heart.

Tisanaa bujhai tipati hoi hari kai naai piaari ||
The fire of desire is extinguished, and one finds satisfaction, through the Love of the Name of the Lord.

नानक गुरमुखि पाईऐ हरि अपनी किरपा धारि ॥३५॥
Naanak guramukhi paaeeai hari apanee kirapaa dhaari ||35||
O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the Lord, when He showers His Mercy. ||35||

Binu sabadai jagatu baraliaa kaha(nn)aa kachhoo na jaai ||
Without the Shabad, the world is so insane, that it cannot even be described.

Hari rakhe se ubare sabadi rahe liv laai ||
Those who are protected by the Lord are saved; they remain lovingly attuned to the Word of the Shabad.

नानक करता सभ किछु जाणदा जिनि रखी बणत बणाइ ॥३६॥
Naanak karataa sabh kichhu jaa(nn)adaa jini rakhee ba(nn)at ba(nn)aai ||36||
O Nanak, the Creator who made this making knows everything. ||36||

होम जग सभि तीरथा पड़्हि पंडित थके पुराण ॥
Hom jag sabhi teerathaa pa(rr)hi panddit thake puraa(nn) ||
The Pandits, the religious scholars, have grown weary of making fire-offerings and sacrifices, making pilgrimages to all the sacred shrines, and reading the Puraanas.

ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
बिखु माइआ मोहु न मिटई विचि हउमै आवणु जाणु ॥
Bikhu maaiaa mohu na mitaee vichi haumai aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u ||
But they cannot get rid of the poison of emotional attachment to Maya; they continue to come and go in egotism.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥
सतिगुर मिलिऐ मलु उतरी हरि जपिआ पुरखु सुजाणु ॥
Satigur miliai malu utaree hari japiaa purakhu sujaa(nn)u ||
Meeting with the True Guru, one's filth is washed off, meditating on the Lord, the Primal Being, the All-knowing One.

Manamukhi asathiru naa theeai mari binasi jaai khin vaar ||
The self-willed manmukhs do not become steady and stable; they die and are gone in an instant.

Binu satigur bhagati na hovaee naami na lagai piaaru ||
Without the True Guru, there is no devotional worship, and no love of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

Lobhee kaa vesaahu na keejai je kaa paari vasaai ||
Do not trust greedy people, if you can avoid doing so.

At the very last moment, they will deceive you there, where no one will be able to lend a helping hand.

Manamukh setee sanggu kare muhi kaalakh daagu lagaai ||
Whoever associates with the self-willed manmukhs, will have his face blackened and dirtied.

Muh kaale tinh lobheeaan jaasani janamu gavaai ||
Black are the faces of those greedy people; they lose their lives, and leave in disgrace.

Satasanggati hari meli prbh hari naamu vasai mani aai ||
O Lord, let me join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation; may the Name of the Lord God abide in my mind.

चुगल निंदक भुखे रुलि मुए एना हथु न किथाऊ पाइ ॥
Chugal ninddak bhukhe ruli mue enaa hathu na kithaau paai ||
The gossipers and slanderers shall remain hungry and die, rolling in the dust; their hands cannot reach anywhere.

बाहरि पाखंड सभ करम करहि मनि हिरदै कपटु कमाइ ॥
Baahari paakhandd sabh karam karahi mani hiradai kapatu kamaai ||
Outwardly, they do all the proper deeds, but they are hypocrites; in their minds and hearts, they practice deception and fraud.

Kheti sareeri jo beejeeai so antti khaloaa aai ||
Whatever is planted in the farm of the body, shall come and stand before them in the end.

Nanak offers this prayer: O Lord God, please forgive me, and unite me with Yourself. ||41||

Maaiaa mohi paletiaa anttari agiaanu gubaaru ||
He is wrapped up in emotional attachment and Maya, and within his being is the darkness of ignorance.

तब नरु सुता जागिआ सिरि डंडु लगा बहु भारु ॥
Tab naru sutaa jaagiaa siri danddu lagaa bahu bhaaru ||
The sleeping person wakes, only when he is hit on the head by a heavy club.

गुरमुखां करां उपरि हरि चेतिआ से पाइनि मोख दुआरु ॥
Guramukhaan karaan upari hari chetiaa se paaini mokh duaaru ||
The Gurmukhs dwell upon the Lord; they find the door of salvation.

Naanak aapi ohi udhare sabh kutambb tare paravaar ||42||
O Nanak, they themselves are saved, and all their relatives are carried across as well. ||42||

The self-willed manmukh dies; his life is wasted.

Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, shall cry in pain in the end.
