ਦਿਲਹੁ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਜਿੰਨੑ ਸੇਈ ਸਚਿਆ ॥

दिलहु मुहबति जिंन्ह सेई सचिआ ॥

Dilahu muhabati jinnh seee sachiaa ||

They alone are true, whose love for God is deep and heart-felt.

ਜਿਨੑ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਰੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਿ ਕਾਂਢੇ ਕਚਿਆ ॥੧॥

जिन्ह मनि होरु मुखि होरु सि कांढे कचिआ ॥१॥

Jinh mani horu mukhi horu si kaandhe kachiaa ||1||

Those who have one thing in their heart, and something else in their mouth, are judged to be false. ||1||


ਰਤੇ ਇਸਕ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਰੰਗਿ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕੇ ॥

रते इसक खुदाइ रंगि दीदार के ॥

Rate isak khudaai ranggi deedaar ke ||

Those who are imbued with love for the Lord, are delighted by His Vision.

ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਜਿਨੑ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇ ਭੁਇ ਭਾਰੁ ਥੀਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

विसरिआ जिन्ह नामु ते भुइ भारु थीए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Visariaa jinh naamu te bhui bhaaru theee ||1|| rahaau ||

Those who forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are a burden on the earth. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਪਿ ਲੀਏ ਲੜਿ ਲਾਇ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵੇਸ ਸੇ ॥

आपि लीए लड़ि लाइ दरि दरवेस से ॥

Aapi leee la(rr)i laai dari daraves se ||

Those whom the Lord attaches to the hem of His robe, are the true dervishes at His Door.

ਤਿਨ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਣੇਦੀ ਮਾਉ ਆਏ ਸਫਲੁ ਸੇ ॥੨॥

तिन धंनु जणेदी माउ आए सफलु से ॥२॥

Tin dhannu ja(nn)edee maau aae saphalu se ||2||

Blessed are the mothers who gave birth to them, and fruitful is their coming into the world. ||2||


ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਗਮ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਤੂ ॥

परवदगार अपार अगम बेअंत तू ॥

Paravadagaar apaar agam beantt too ||

O Lord, Sustainer and Cherisher, You are infinite, unfathomable and endless.

ਜਿਨਾ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਚੁੰਮਾ ਪੈਰ ਮੂੰ ॥੩॥

जिना पछाता सचु चुमा पैर मूं ॥३॥

Jinaa pachhaataa sachu chummmaa pair moonn ||3||

Those who recognize the True Lord - I kiss their feet. ||3||


ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਹ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਤੂ ਬਖਸੰਦਗੀ ॥

तेरी पनह खुदाइ तू बखसंदगी ॥

Teree panah khudaai too bakhasanddagee ||

I seek Your Protection - You are the Forgiving Lord.

ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦੈ ਖੈਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੰਦਗੀ ॥੪॥੧॥

सेख फरीदै खैरु दीजै बंदगी ॥४॥१॥

Sekh phareedai khairu deejai banddagee ||4||1||

ਬੋਲੈ ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅਲਹ ਲਗੇ ॥

बोलै सेख फरीदु पिआरे अलह लगे ॥

Bolai sekh phareedu piaare alah lage ||

Says Shaykh Fareed, O my dear friend, attach yourself to the Lord.

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਸੀ ਖਾਕ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਗੋਰ ਘਰੇ ॥੧॥

इहु तनु होसी खाक निमाणी गोर घरे ॥१॥

Ihu tanu hosee khaak nimaa(nn)ee gor ghare ||1||

This body shall turn to dust, and its home shall be a neglected graveyard. ||1||


ਆਜੁ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦ ਟਾਕਿਮ ਕੂੰਜੜੀਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਮਚਿੰਦੜੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

आजु मिलावा सेख फरीद टाकिम कूंजड़ीआ मनहु मचिंदड़ीआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aaju milaavaa sekh phareed taakim koonjja(rr)eeaa manahu machindda(rr)eeaa ||1|| rahaau ||

You can meet the Lord today, O Shaykh Fareed, if you restrain your bird-like desires which keep your mind in turmoil. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਘੁਮਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥

जे जाणा मरि जाईऐ घुमि न आईऐ ॥

Je jaa(nn)aa mari jaaeeai ghumi na aaeeai ||

If I had known that I was to die, and not return again,

ਝੂਠੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਲਗਿ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਵਞਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

झूठी दुनीआ लगि न आपु वञाईऐ ॥२॥

Jhoothee duneeaa lagi na aapu va(ny)aaeeai ||2||

I would not have ruined myself by clinging to the world of falsehood. ||2||


ਬੋਲੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਨ ਬੋਲੀਐ ॥

बोलीऐ सचु धरमु झूठु न बोलीऐ ॥

Boleeai sachu dharamu jhoothu na boleeai ||

So speak the Truth, in righteousness, and do not speak falsehood.

ਜੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਦਸੈ ਵਾਟ ਮੁਰੀਦਾ ਜੋਲੀਐ ॥੩॥

जो गुरु दसै वाट मुरीदा जोलीऐ ॥३॥

Jo guru dasai vaat mureedaa joleeai ||3||

The disciple ought to travel the route, pointed out by the Guru. ||3||


ਛੈਲ ਲੰਘੰਦੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਗੋਰੀ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਿਆ ॥

छैल लंघंदे पारि गोरी मनु धीरिआ ॥

Chhail langghandde paari goree manu dheeriaa ||

Seeing the youths being carried across, the hearts of the beautiful young soul-brides are encouraged.

ਕੰਚਨ ਵੰਨੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਕਲਵਤਿ ਚੀਰਿਆ ॥੪॥

कंचन वंने पासे कलवति चीरिआ ॥४॥

Kancchan vanne paase kalavati cheeriaa ||4||

Those who side with the glitter of gold, are cut down with a saw. ||4||


ਸੇਖ ਹੈਯਾਤੀ ਜਗਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹਿਆ ॥

सेख हैयाती जगि न कोई थिरु रहिआ ॥

Sekh haiyaatee jagi na koee thiru rahiaa ||

O Shaykh, no one's life is permanent in this world.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਸਣਿ ਹਮ ਬੈਠੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਬੈਸਿ ਗਇਆ ॥੫॥

जिसु आसणि हम बैठे केते बैसि गइआ ॥५॥

Jisu aasa(nn)i ham baithe kete baisi gaiaa ||5||

That seat, upon which we now sit - many others sat on it and have since departed. ||5||


ਕਤਿਕ ਕੂੰਜਾਂ ਚੇਤਿ ਡਉ ਸਾਵਣਿ ਬਿਜੁਲੀਆਂ ॥

कतिक कूंजां चेति डउ सावणि बिजुलीआं ॥

Katik koonjjaan cheti dau saava(nn)i bijuleeaan ||

As the swallows appear in the month of Katik, forest fires in the month of Chayt, and lightning in Saawan,

ਸੀਆਲੇ ਸੋਹੰਦੀਆਂ ਪਿਰ ਗਲਿ ਬਾਹੜੀਆਂ ॥੬॥

सीआले सोहंदीआं पिर गलि बाहड़ीआं ॥६॥

Seeaale sohanddeeaan pir gali baaha(rr)eeaan ||6||

And as the bride's arms adorn her husband's neck in winter; ||6||


ਚਲੇ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ਲੇਇ ਮਨੋ ॥

चले चलणहार विचारा लेइ मनो ॥

Chale chala(nn)ahaar vichaaraa lei mano ||

Just so, the transitory human bodies pass away. Reflect upon this in your mind.

ਗੰਢੇਦਿਆਂ ਛਿਅ ਮਾਹ ਤੁੜੰਦਿਆ ਹਿਕੁ ਖਿਨੋ ॥੭॥

गंढेदिआं छिअ माह तुड़ंदिआ हिकु खिनो ॥७॥

Ganddhediaan chhia maah tu(rr)anddiaa hiku khino ||7||

It takes six months to form the body, but it breaks in an instant. ||7||


ਜਿਮੀ ਪੁਛੈ ਅਸਮਾਨ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਖੇਵਟ ਕਿੰਨਿ ਗਏ ॥

जिमी पुछै असमान फरीदा खेवट किंनि गए ॥

Jimee puchhai asamaan phareedaa khevat kinni gae ||

O Fareed, the earth asks the sky, ""Where have the boatmen gone?""

ਜਾਲਣ ਗੋਰਾਂ ਨਾਲਿ ਉਲਾਮੇ ਜੀਅ ਸਹੇ ॥੮॥੨॥

जालण गोरां नालि उलामे जीअ सहे ॥८॥२॥

Jaala(nn) goraan naali ulaame jeea sahe ||8||2||

Some have been cremated, and some lie in their graves; their souls are suffering rebukes. ||8||2||

Raagu soohee baa(nn)ee sekh phareed jee kee ||

Raag Soohee, The Word Of Shaykh Fareed Jee:

ਤਪਿ ਤਪਿ ਲੁਹਿ ਲੁਹਿ ਹਾਥ ਮਰੋਰਉ ॥

तपि तपि लुहि लुहि हाथ मरोरउ ॥

Tapi tapi luhi luhi haath marorau ||

Burning and burning, writhing in pain, I wring my hands.

ਬਾਵਲਿ ਹੋਈ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਲੋਰਉ ॥

बावलि होई सो सहु लोरउ ॥

Baavali hoee so sahu lorau ||

I have gone insane, seeking my Husband Lord.

ਤੈ ਸਹਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਆ ਰੋਸੁ ॥

तै सहि मन महि कीआ रोसु ॥

Tai sahi man mahi keeaa rosu ||

O my Husband Lord, You are angry with me in Your Mind.

ਮੁਝੁ ਅਵਗਨ ਸਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੋਸੁ ॥੧॥

मुझु अवगन सह नाही दोसु ॥१॥

Mujhu avagan sah naahee dosu ||1||

The fault is with me, and not with my Husband Lord. ||1||


ਤੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

तै साहिब की मै सार न जानी ॥

Tai saahib kee mai saar na jaanee ||

O my Lord and Master, I do not know Your excellence and worth.

ਜੋਬਨੁ ਖੋਇ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जोबनु खोइ पाछै पछुतानी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jobanu khoi paachhai pachhutaanee ||1|| rahaau ||

Having wasted my youth, now I come to regret and repent. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਾਲੀ ਕੋਇਲ ਤੂ ਕਿਤ ਗੁਨ ਕਾਲੀ ॥

काली कोइल तू कित गुन काली ॥

Kaalee koil too kit gun kaalee ||

O black bird, what qualities have made you black?

ਅਪਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਬਿਰਹੈ ਜਾਲੀ ॥

अपने प्रीतम के हउ बिरहै जाली ॥

Apane preetam ke hau birahai jaalee ||

"I have been burnt by separation from my Beloved."

ਪਿਰਹਿ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਕਤਹਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

पिरहि बिहून कतहि सुखु पाए ॥

Pirahi bihoon katahi sukhu paae ||

Without her Husband Lord, how can the soul-bride ever find peace?

ਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੨॥

जा होइ क्रिपालु ता प्रभू मिलाए ॥२॥

Jaa hoi kripaalu taa prbhoo milaae ||2||

When He becomes merciful, then God unites us with Himself. ||2||


ਵਿਧਣ ਖੂਹੀ ਮੁੰਧ ਇਕੇਲੀ ॥

विधण खूही मुंध इकेली ॥

Vidha(nn) khoohee munddh ikelee ||

The lonely soul-bride suffers in the pit of the world.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਸਾਥੀ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ॥

ना को साथी ना को बेली ॥

Naa ko saathee naa ko belee ||

She has no companions, and no friends.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਲੀ ॥

करि किरपा प्रभि साधसंगि मेली ॥

Kari kirapaa prbhi saadhasanggi melee ||

In His Mercy, God has united me with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਅਲਹੁ ਬੇਲੀ ॥੩॥

जा फिरि देखा ता मेरा अलहु बेली ॥३॥

Jaa phiri dekhaa taa meraa alahu belee ||3||

And when I look again, then I find God as my Helper. ||3||


ਵਾਟ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਖਰੀ ਉਡੀਣੀ ॥

वाट हमारी खरी उडीणी ॥

Vaat hamaaree kharee udee(nn)ee ||

The path upon which I must walk is very depressing.

ਖੰਨਿਅਹੁ ਤਿਖੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਿਈਣੀ ॥

खंनिअहु तिखी बहुतु पिईणी ॥

Khanniahu tikhee bahutu piee(nn)ee ||

It is sharper than a two-edged sword, and very narrow.

ਉਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਹੈ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥

उसु ऊपरि है मारगु मेरा ॥

Usu upari hai maaragu meraa ||

That is where my path lies.

ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਿ ਸਵੇਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

सेख फरीदा पंथु सम्हारि सवेरा ॥४॥१॥

Sekh phareedaa pantthu samhaari saveraa ||4||1||

O Shaykh Fareed, think of that path early on. ||4||1||


ਸੂਹੀ ਲਲਿਤ ॥

Soohee, Lalit:

ਬੇੜਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਨ ਸਕਿਓ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੀ ਵੇਲਾ ॥

बेड़ा बंधि न सकिओ बंधन की वेला ॥

Be(rr)aa banddhi na sakio banddhan kee velaa ||

You were not able to make yourself a raft when you should have.

ਭਰਿ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਜਬ ਊਛਲੈ ਤਬ ਤਰਣੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ॥੧॥

भरि सरवरु जब ऊछलै तब तरणु दुहेला ॥१॥

Bhari saravaru jab uchhalai tab tara(nn)u duhelaa ||1||

When the ocean is churning and over-flowing, then it is very difficult to cross over it. ||1||


ਹਥੁ ਨ ਲਾਇ ਕਸੁੰਭੜੈ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਢੋਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हथु न लाइ कसु्मभड़ै जलि जासी ढोला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hathu na laai kasumbbha(rr)ai jali jaasee dholaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Do not touch the safflower with your hands; its color will fade away, my dear. ||1|| Pause ||


ਇਕ ਆਪੀਨੑੈ ਪਤਲੀ ਸਹ ਕੇਰੇ ਬੋਲਾ ॥

इक आपीन्है पतली सह केरे बोला ॥

Ik aapeenhai patalee sah kere bolaa ||

First, the bride herself is weak, and then, her Husband Lord's Order is hard to bear.

ਦੁਧਾ ਥਣੀ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਲਾ ॥੨॥

दुधा थणी न आवई फिरि होइ न मेला ॥२॥

Dudhaa tha(nn)ee na aavaee phiri hoi na melaa ||2||

Milk does not return to the breast; it will not be collected again. ||2||


ਕਹੈ ਫਰੀਦੁ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ਸਹੁ ਅਲਾਏਸੀ ॥

कहै फरीदु सहेलीहो सहु अलाएसी ॥

Kahai phareedu saheleeho sahu alaaesee ||

Says Fareed, O my companions, when our Husband Lord calls,

ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਸੀ ਡੁੰਮਣਾ ਅਹਿ ਤਨੁ ਢੇਰੀ ਥੀਸੀ ॥੩॥੨॥

हंसु चलसी डुमणा अहि तनु ढेरी थीसी ॥३॥२॥

Hanssu chalasee dummma(nn)aa ahi tanu dheree theesee ||3||2||

The soul departs, sad at heart, and this body returns to dust. ||3||2||

जितु दिहाड़ै धन वरी साहे लए लिखाइ ॥

Jitu dihaa(rr)ai dhan varee saahe lae likhaai ||

The day of the bride's wedding is pre-ordained.

ਮਲਕੁ ਜਿ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਮੁਹੁ ਦੇਖਾਲੇ ਆਇ ॥

मलकु जि कंनी सुणीदा मुहु देखाले आइ ॥

Malaku ji kannee su(nn)eedaa muhu dekhaale aai ||

On that day, the Messenger of Death, of whom she had only heard, comes and shows its face.

ਜਿੰਦੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਕਢੀਐ ਹਡਾ ਕੂ ਕੜਕਾਇ ॥

जिंदु निमाणी कढीऐ हडा कू कड़काइ ॥

Jinddu nimaa(nn)ee kadheeai hadaa koo ka(rr)akaai ||

It breaks the bones of the body and pulls the helpless soul out.

ਸਾਹੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਨ ਚਲਨੀ ਜਿੰਦੂ ਕੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥

साहे लिखे न चलनी जिंदू कूं समझाइ ॥

Saahe likhe na chalanee jinddoo koonn samajhaai ||

That pre-ordained time of marriage cannot be avoided. Explain this to your soul.

ਜਿੰਦੁ ਵਹੁਟੀ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਰੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਸੀ ਪਰਣਾਇ ॥

जिंदु वहुटी मरणु वरु लै जासी परणाइ ॥

Jinddu vahutee mara(nn)u varu lai jaasee para(nn)aai ||

The soul is the bride, and death is the groom. He will marry her and take her away.

ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਜੋਲਿ ਕੈ ਕੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਗੈ ਧਾਇ ॥

आपण हथी जोलि कै कै गलि लगै धाइ ॥

Aapa(nn) hathee joli kai kai gali lagai dhaai ||

After the body sends her away with its own hands, whose neck will it embrace?

ਵਾਲਹੁ ਨਿਕੀ ਪੁਰਸਲਾਤ ਕੰਨੀ ਨ ਸੁਣੀ ਆਇ ॥

वालहु निकी पुरसलात कंनी न सुणी आइ ॥

Vaalahu nikee purasalaat kannee na su(nn)ee aai ||

The bridge to hell is narrower than a hair; haven't you heard of it with your ears?

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਿੜੀ ਪਵੰਦੀਈ ਖੜਾ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਮੁਹਾਇ ॥੧॥

फरीदा किड़ी पवंदीई खड़ा न आपु मुहाइ ॥१॥

Phareedaa ki(rr)ee pavanddeeee kha(rr)aa na aapu muhaai ||1||

Fareed, the call has come; be careful now - don't let yourself be robbed. ||1||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰ ਦਰਵੇਸੀ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਚਲਾਂ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਭਤਿ ॥

फरीदा दर दरवेसी गाखड़ी चलां दुनीआं भति ॥

Phareedaa dar daravesee gaakha(rr)ee chalaan duneeaan bhati ||

Fareed, it is so difficult to become a humble Saint at the Lord's Door.

ਬੰਨੑਿ ਉਠਾਈ ਪੋਟਲੀ ਕਿਥੈ ਵੰਞਾ ਘਤਿ ॥੨॥

बंन्हि उठाई पोटली किथै वंञा घति ॥२॥

Bannhi uthaaee potalee kithai van(ny)aa ghati ||2||

I am so accustomed to walking in the ways of the world. I have tied and picked up the bundle; where can I go to throw it away? ||2||


ਕਿਝੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਕਿਝੁ ਨ ਸੁਝੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਗੁਝੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥

किझु न बुझै किझु न सुझै दुनीआ गुझी भाहि ॥

Kijhu na bujhai kijhu na sujhai duneeaa gujhee bhaahi ||

I know nothing; I understand nothing. The world is a smoldering fire.

ਸਾਂਈਂ ਮੇਰੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਤ ਹੰ ਭੀ ਦਝਾਂ ਆਹਿ ॥੩॥

सांईं मेरै चंगा कीता नाही त हं भी दझां आहि ॥३॥

Saaneen merai changgaa keetaa naahee ta hann bhee dajhaan aahi ||3||

My Lord did well to warn me about it; otherwise, I would have been burnt as well. ||3||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਤਿਲ ਥੋੜੜੇ ਸੰਮਲਿ ਬੁਕੁ ਭਰੀ ॥

फरीदा जे जाणा तिल थोड़ड़े समलि बुकु भरी ॥

Phareedaa je jaa(nn)aa til tho(rr)a(rr)e sammali buku bharee ||

Fareed, if I had known that I had so few sesame seeds, I would have been more careful with them in my hands.

ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਹੁ ਨੰਢੜਾ ਤਾਂ ਥੋੜਾ ਮਾਣੁ ਕਰੀ ॥੪॥

जे जाणा सहु नंढड़ा तां थोड़ा माणु करी ॥४॥

Je jaa(nn)aa sahu nanddha(rr)aa taan tho(rr)aa maa(nn)u karee ||4||

If I had known that my Husband Lord was so young and innocent, I would not have been so arrogant. ||4||


ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਲੜੁ ਛਿਜਣਾ ਪੀਡੀ ਪਾਈਂ ਗੰਢਿ ॥

जे जाणा लड़ु छिजणा पीडी पाईं गंढि ॥

Je jaa(nn)aa la(rr)u chhija(nn)aa peedee paaeen ganddhi ||

If I had known that my robe would come loose, I would have tied a tighter knot.

ਤੈ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਮੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਕੋ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਡਿਠਾ ਹੰਢਿ ॥੫॥

तै जेवडु मै नाहि को सभु जगु डिठा हंढि ॥५॥

Tai jevadu mai naahi ko sabhu jagu dithaa handdhi ||5||

I have found none as great as You, Lord; I have looked and searched throughout the world. ||5||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਅਕਲਿ ਲਤੀਫੁ ਕਾਲੇ ਲਿਖੁ ਨ ਲੇਖ ॥

फरीदा जे तू अकलि लतीफु काले लिखु न लेख ॥

Phareedaa je too akali lateephu kaale likhu na lekh ||

Fareed, if you have a keen understanding, then do not write black marks against anyone else.

ਆਪਨੜੇ ਗਿਰੀਵਾਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਨੀਂਵਾਂ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੬॥

आपनड़े गिरीवान महि सिरु नींवां करि देखु ॥६॥

Aapana(rr)e gireevaan mahi siru neenvaan kari dekhu ||6||

Look underneath your own collar instead. ||6||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੋ ਤੈ ਮਾਰਨਿ ਮੁਕੀਆਂ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਨ ਮਾਰੇ ਘੁੰਮਿ ॥

फरीदा जो तै मारनि मुकीआं तिन्हा न मारे घुमि ॥

Phareedaa jo tai maarani mukeeaan tinhaa na maare ghummmi ||

Fareed, do not turn around and strike those who strike you with their fists.

ਆਪਨੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪੈਰ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਦੇ ਚੁੰਮਿ ॥੭॥

आपनड़ै घरि जाईऐ पैर तिन्हा दे चुमि ॥७॥

Aapana(rr)ai ghari jaaeeai pair tinhaa de chummmi ||7||

Kiss their feet, and return to your own home. ||7||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਾਂ ਤਉ ਖਟਣ ਵੇਲ ਤਾਂ ਤੂ ਰਤਾ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਿਉ ॥

फरीदा जां तउ खटण वेल तां तू रता दुनी सिउ ॥

Phareedaa jaan tau khata(nn) vel taan too rataa dunee siu ||

Fareed, when there was time for you to earn good karma, you were in love with the world instead.

ਮਰਗ ਸਵਾਈ ਨੀਹਿ ਜਾਂ ਭਰਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਲਦਿਆ ॥੮॥

मरग सवाई नीहि जां भरिआ तां लदिआ ॥८॥

Marag savaaee neehi jaan bhariaa taan ladiaa ||8||

Now, death has a strong foothold; when the load is full, it is taken away. ||8||


ਦੇਖੁ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੁ ਥੀਆ ਦਾੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਭੂਰ ॥

देखु फरीदा जु थीआ दाड़ी होई भूर ॥

Dekhu phareedaa ju theeaa daa(rr)ee hoee bhoor ||

See, Fareed, what has happened: your beard has become grey.

ਅਗਹੁ ਨੇੜਾ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਛਾ ਰਹਿਆ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੯॥

अगहु नेड़ा आइआ पिछा रहिआ दूरि ॥९॥

Agahu ne(rr)aa aaiaa pichhaa rahiaa doori ||9||

That which is coming is near, and the past is left far behind. ||9||


ਦੇਖੁ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿ ਥੀਆ ਸਕਰ ਹੋਈ ਵਿਸੁ ॥

देखु फरीदा जि थीआ सकर होई विसु ॥

Dekhu phareedaa ji theeaa sakar hoee visu ||

See, Fareed, what has happened: sugar has become poison.

ਸਾਂਈ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੇਦਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ ॥੧੦॥

सांई बाझहु आपणे वेदण कहीऐ किसु ॥१०॥

Saanee baajhahu aapa(nn)e veda(nn) kaheeai kisu ||10||

Without my Lord, who can I tell of my sorrow? ||10||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਤੀਣੀਆਂ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਰੀਣੇ ਕੰਨ ॥

फरीदा अखी देखि पतीणीआं सुणि सुणि रीणे कंन ॥

Phareedaa akhee dekhi patee(nn)eeaan su(nn)i su(nn)i ree(nn)e kann ||

Fareed, my eyes have become weak, and my ears have become hard of hearing.

ਸਾਖ ਪਕੰਦੀ ਆਈਆ ਹੋਰ ਕਰੇਂਦੀ ਵੰਨ ॥੧੧॥

साख पकंदी आईआ होर करेंदी वंन ॥११॥

Saakh pakanddee aaeeaa hor karendee vann ||11||

The body's crop has become ripe and turned color. ||11||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਾਲੀਂ ਜਿਨੀ ਨ ਰਾਵਿਆ ਧਉਲੀ ਰਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

फरीदा कालीं जिनी न राविआ धउली रावै कोइ ॥

Phareedaa kaaleen jinee na raaviaa dhaulee raavai koi ||

Fareed, those who did not enjoy their Spouse when their hair was black - hardly any of them enjoy Him when their hair turns grey.

ਕਰਿ ਸਾਂਈ ਸਿਉ ਪਿਰਹੜੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਨਵੇਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੨॥

करि सांई सिउ पिरहड़ी रंगु नवेला होइ ॥१२॥

Kari saanee siu piraha(rr)ee ranggu navelaa hoi ||12||

So be in love with the Lord, so that your color may ever be new. ||12||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਨੑ ਲੋਇਣ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਸੇ ਲੋਇਣ ਮੈ ਡਿਠੁ ॥

फरीदा जिन्ह लोइण जगु मोहिआ से लोइण मै डिठु ॥

Phareedaa jinh loi(nn) jagu mohiaa se loi(nn) mai dithu ||

Fareed, those eyes which have enticed the world - I have seen those eyes.

ਕਜਲ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਸਹਦਿਆ ਸੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਸੂਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥੧੪॥

कजल रेख न सहदिआ से पंखी सूइ बहिठु ॥१४॥

Kajal rekh na sahadiaa se pankkhee sooi bahithu ||14||

Once, they could not endure even a bit of mascara; now, the birds hatch their young in them! ||14||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੂਕੇਦਿਆ ਚਾਂਗੇਦਿਆ ਮਤੀ ਦੇਦਿਆ ਨਿਤ ॥

फरीदा कूकेदिआ चांगेदिआ मती देदिआ नित ॥

Phareedaa kookediaa chaangediaa matee dediaa nit ||

Fareed, they shouted and yelled, and constantly gave good advice.

ਜੋ ਸੈਤਾਨਿ ਵੰਞਾਇਆ ਸੇ ਕਿਤ ਫੇਰਹਿ ਚਿਤ ॥੧੫॥

जो सैतानि वंञाइआ से कित फेरहि चित ॥१५॥

Jo saitaani van(ny)aaiaa se kit pherahi chit ||15||

But those whom the devil has spoiled - how can they turn their consciousness towards God? ||15||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਥੀਉ ਪਵਾਹੀ ਦਭੁ ॥

फरीदा थीउ पवाही दभु ॥

Phareedaa theeu pavaahee dabhu ||

Fareed, become the grass on the path,

ਜੇ ਸਾਂਈ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਸਭੁ ॥

जे सांई लोड़हि सभु ॥

Je saanee lo(rr)ahi sabhu ||

If you long for the Lord of all.

ਇਕੁ ਛਿਜਹਿ ਬਿਆ ਲਤਾੜੀਅਹਿ ॥

इकु छिजहि बिआ लताड़ीअहि ॥

Iku chhijahi biaa lataa(rr)eeahi ||

One will cut you down, and another will trample you underfoot;

ਤਾਂ ਸਾਈ ਦੈ ਦਰਿ ਵਾੜੀਅਹਿ ॥੧੬॥

तां साई दै दरि वाड़ीअहि ॥१६॥

Taan saaee dai dari vaa(rr)eeahi ||16||

Then, you shall enter the Court of the Lord. ||16||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਖਾਕੁ ਨ ਨਿੰਦੀਐ ਖਾਕੂ ਜੇਡੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

फरीदा खाकु न निंदीऐ खाकू जेडु न कोइ ॥

Phareedaa khaaku na ninddeeai khaakoo jedu na koi ||

Fareed, do not slander the dust; noting is as great as dust.

ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਪੈਰਾ ਤਲੈ ਮੁਇਆ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੭॥

जीवदिआ पैरा तलै मुइआ उपरि होइ ॥१७॥

Jeevadiaa pairaa talai muiaa upari hoi ||17||

When we are alive, it is under our feet, and when we are dead, it is above us. ||17||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਾ ਲਬੁ ਤਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਲਬੁ ਤ ਕੂੜਾ ਨੇਹੁ ॥

फरीदा जा लबु ता नेहु किआ लबु त कूड़ा नेहु ॥

Phareedaa jaa labu taa nehu kiaa labu ta koo(rr)aa nehu ||

Fareed, when there is greed, what love can there be? When there is greed, love is false.

ਕਿਚਰੁ ਝਤਿ ਲਘਾਈਐ ਛਪਰਿ ਤੁਟੈ ਮੇਹੁ ॥੧੮॥

किचरु झति लघाईऐ छपरि तुटै मेहु ॥१८॥

Kicharu jhati laghaaeeai chhapari tutai mehu ||18||

How long can one remain in a thatched hut which leaks when it rains? ||18||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਭਵਹਿ ਵਣਿ ਕੰਡਾ ਮੋੜੇਹਿ ॥

फरीदा जंगलु जंगलु किआ भवहि वणि कंडा मोड़ेहि ॥

Phareedaa janggalu janggalu kiaa bhavahi va(nn)i kanddaa mo(rr)ehi ||

Fareed, why do you wander from jungle to jungle, crashing through the thorny trees?

ਵਸੀ ਰਬੁ ਹਿਆਲੀਐ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਢੂਢੇਹਿ ॥੧੯॥

वसी रबु हिआलीऐ जंगलु किआ ढूढेहि ॥१९॥

Vasee rabu hiaaleeai janggalu kiaa dhoodhehi ||19||

The Lord abides in the heart; why are you looking for Him in the jungle? ||19||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਇਨੀ ਨਿਕੀ ਜੰਘੀਐ ਥਲ ਡੂੰਗਰ ਭਵਿਓਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥

फरीदा इनी निकी जंघीऐ थल डूंगर भविओम्हि ॥

Phareedaa inee nikee janggheeai thal doonggar bhaviomhi ||

Fareed, with these small legs, I crossed deserts and mountains.

ਅਜੁ ਫਰੀਦੈ ਕੂਜੜਾ ਸੈ ਕੋਹਾਂ ਥੀਓਮਿ ॥੨੦॥

अजु फरीदै कूजड़ा सै कोहां थीओमि ॥२०॥

Aju phareedai kooja(rr)aa sai kohaan theeomi ||20||

But today, Fareed, my water jug seems hundreds of miles away. ||20||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਾਤੀ ਵਡੀਆਂ ਧੁਖਿ ਧੁਖਿ ਉਠਨਿ ਪਾਸ ॥

फरीदा राती वडीआं धुखि धुखि उठनि पास ॥

Phareedaa raatee vadeeaan dhukhi dhukhi uthani paas ||

Fareed, the nights are long, and my sides are aching in pain.

ਧਿਗੁ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਆਸ ॥੨੧॥

धिगु तिन्हा दा जीविआ जिना विडाणी आस ॥२१॥

Dhigu tinhaa daa jeeviaa jinaa vidaa(nn)ee aas ||21||

Cursed are the lives of those who place their hopes in others. ||21||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਮੈ ਹੋਦਾ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤਾ ਆਇੜਿਆਂ ॥

फरीदा जे मै होदा वारिआ मिता आइड़िआं ॥

Phareedaa je mai hodaa vaariaa mitaa aai(rr)iaan ||

Fareed, if I had been there when my friend came, I would have made myself a sacrifice to him.

ਹੇੜਾ ਜਲੈ ਮਜੀਠ ਜਿਉ ਉਪਰਿ ਅੰਗਾਰਾ ॥੨੨॥

हेड़ा जलै मजीठ जिउ उपरि अंगारा ॥२२॥

He(rr)aa jalai majeeth jiu upari anggaaraa ||22||

Now my flesh is burning red on the hot coals. ||22||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਦਾਖ ਬਿਜਉਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਕਰਿ ਬੀਜੈ ਜਟੁ ॥

फरीदा लोड़ै दाख बिजउरीआं किकरि बीजै जटु ॥

Phareedaa lo(rr)ai daakh bijaureeaan kikari beejai jatu ||

Fareed, the farmer plants acacia trees, and wishes for grapes.

ਹੰਢੈ ਉਂਨ ਕਤਾਇਦਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਪਟੁ ॥੨੩॥

हंढै उंन कताइदा पैधा लोड़ै पटु ॥२३॥

Handdhai unn kataaidaa paidhaa lo(rr)ai patu ||23||

He is spinning wool, but he wishes to wear silk. ||23||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਲੀਏ ਚਿਕੜੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇਹੁ ॥

फरीदा गलीए चिकड़ु दूरि घरु नालि पिआरे नेहु ॥

Phareedaa galeee chika(rr)u doori gharu naali piaare nehu ||

Fareed, the path is muddy, and the house of my Beloved is so far away.

ਚਲਾ ਤ ਭਿਜੈ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਰਹਾਂ ਤ ਤੁਟੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੪॥

चला त भिजै क्मबली रहां त तुटै नेहु ॥२४॥

Chalaa ta bhijai kambbalee rahaan ta tutai nehu ||24||

If I go out, my blanket will get soaked, but if I remain at home, then my heart will be broken. ||24||


ਭਿਜਉ ਸਿਜਉ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਅਲਹ ਵਰਸਉ ਮੇਹੁ ॥

भिजउ सिजउ क्मबली अलह वरसउ मेहु ॥

Bhijau sijau kambbalee alah varasau mehu ||

My blanket is soaked, drenched with the downpour of the Lord's Rain.

ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਜਣਾ ਤੁਟਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੫॥

जाइ मिला तिना सजणा तुटउ नाही नेहु ॥२५॥

Jaai milaa tinaa saja(nn)aa tutau naahee nehu ||25||

I am going out to meet my Friend, so that my heart will not be broken. ||25||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੈ ਭੋਲਾਵਾ ਪਗ ਦਾ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

फरीदा मै भोलावा पग दा मतु मैली होइ जाइ ॥

Phareedaa mai bholaavaa pag daa matu mailee hoi jaai ||

Fareed, I was worried that my turban might become dirty.

ਗਹਿਲਾ ਰੂਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਸਿਰੁ ਭੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨੬॥

गहिला रूहु न जाणई सिरु भी मिटी खाइ ॥२६॥

Gahilaa roohu na jaa(nn)aee siru bhee mitee khaai ||26||

My thoughtless self did not realize that one day, dust will consume my head as well. ||26||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਨਿਵਾਤ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਾਖਿਓੁ ਮਾਂਝਾ ਦੁਧੁ ॥

फरीदा सकर खंडु निवात गुड़ु माखिओ मांझा दुधु ॥

Phareedaa sakar khanddu nivaat gu(rr)u maakhiou maanjhaa dudhu ||

Fareed: sugar cane, candy, sugar, molasses, honey and buffalo's milk

ਸਭੇ ਵਸਤੂ ਮਿਠੀਆਂ ਰਬ ਨ ਪੁਜਨਿ ਤੁਧੁ ॥੨੭॥

सभे वसतू मिठीआं रब न पुजनि तुधु ॥२७॥

Sabhe vasatoo mitheeaan rab na pujani tudhu ||27||

- all these things are sweet, but they are not equal to You. ||27||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰੋਟੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਲਾਵਣੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੁਖ ॥

फरीदा रोटी मेरी काठ की लावणु मेरी भुख ॥

Phareedaa rotee meree kaath kee laava(nn)u meree bhukh ||

Fareed, my bread is made of wood, and hunger is my appetizer.

ਜਿਨਾ ਖਾਧੀ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਘਣੇ ਸਹਨਿਗੇ ਦੁਖ ॥੨੮॥

जिना खाधी चोपड़ी घणे सहनिगे दुख ॥२८॥

Jinaa khaadhee chopa(rr)ee gha(nn)e sahanige dukh ||28||

Those who eat buttered bread, will suffer in terrible pain. ||28||


ਰੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਉ ॥

रुखी सुखी खाइ कै ठंढा पाणी पीउ ॥

Rukhee sukhee khaai kai thanddhaa paa(nn)ee peeu ||

Eat dry bread, and drink cold water.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਨਾ ਤਰਸਾਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੨੯॥

फरीदा देखि पराई चोपड़ी ना तरसाए जीउ ॥२९॥

Phareedaa dekhi paraaee chopa(rr)ee naa tarasaae jeeu ||29||

Fareed, if you see someone else's buttered bread, do not envy him for it. ||29||


ਅਜੁ ਨ ਸੁਤੀ ਕੰਤ ਸਿਉ ਅੰਗੁ ਮੁੜੇ ਮੁੜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

अजु न सुती कंत सिउ अंगु मुड़े मुड़ि जाइ ॥

Aju na sutee kantt siu anggu mu(rr)e mu(rr)i jaai ||

This night, I did not sleep with my Husband Lord, and now my body is suffering in pain.

ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤੁਮ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੩੦॥

जाइ पुछहु डोहागणी तुम किउ रैणि विहाइ ॥३०॥

Jaai puchhahu dohaaga(nn)ee tum kiu rai(nn)i vihaai ||30||

Go and ask the deserted bride, how she passes her night. ||30||


ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥

साहुरै ढोई ना लहै पेईऐ नाही थाउ ॥

Saahurai dhoee naa lahai peeeai naahee thaau ||

She finds no place of rest in her father-in-law's home, and no place in her parents' home either.

ਪਿਰੁ ਵਾਤੜੀ ਨ ਪੁਛਈ ਧਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੩੧॥

पिरु वातड़ी न पुछई धन सोहागणि नाउ ॥३१॥

Piru vaata(rr)ee na puchhaee dhan sohaaga(nn)i naau ||31||

Her Husband Lord does not care for her; what sort of a blessed, happy soul-bride is she? ||31||


ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਕੰਤ ਕੀ ਕੰਤੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥

साहुरै पेईऐ कंत की कंतु अगमु अथाहु ॥

Saahurai peeeai kantt kee kanttu agammu athaahu ||

In her father-in-law's home hereafter, and in her parents' home in this world, she belongs to her Husband Lord. Her Husband is Inaccessible and Unfathomable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ॥੩੨॥

नानक सो सोहागणी जु भावै बेपरवाह ॥३२॥

Naanak so sohaaga(nn)ee ju bhaavai beparavaah ||32||

O Nanak, she is the happy soul-bride, who is pleasing to her Carefree Lord. ||32||


ਨਾਤੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਸੰਬਹੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਆਇ ਨਚਿੰਦੁ ॥

नाती धोती स्मबही सुती आइ नचिंदु ॥

Naatee dhotee sambbahee sutee aai nachinddu ||

Bathing, washing and decorating herself, she comes and sleeps without anxiety.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਿੰਙੁ ਦੀ ਗਈ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਗੰਧੁ ॥੩੩॥

फरीदा रही सु बेड़ी हिंङु दी गई कथूरी गंधु ॥३३॥

Phareedaa rahee su be(rr)ee hin(ng)(ng)u dee gaee kathooree ganddhu ||33||

Fareed, she still smells like asafetida; the fragrance of musk is gone. ||33||


ਜੋਬਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨਾ ਡਰਾਂ ਜੇ ਸਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

जोबन जांदे ना डरां जे सह प्रीति न जाइ ॥

Joban jaande naa daraan je sah preeti na jaai ||

I am not afraid of losing my youth, as long as I do not lose the Love of my Husband Lord.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਿਤੀਂ ਜੋਬਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਕਿ ਗਏ ਕੁਮਲਾਇ ॥੩੪॥

फरीदा कितीं जोबन प्रीति बिनु सुकि गए कुमलाइ ॥३४॥

Phareedaa kiteen joban preeti binu suki gae kumalaai ||34||

Fareed, so many youths, without His Love, have dried up and withered away. ||34||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਖਟੋਲਾ ਵਾਣੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਛਾਵਣ ਲੇਫੁ ॥

फरीदा चिंत खटोला वाणु दुखु बिरहि विछावण लेफु ॥

Phareedaa chintt khatolaa vaa(nn)u dukhu birahi vichhaava(nn) lephu ||

Fareed, anxiety is my bed, pain is my mattress, and the pain of separation is my blanket and quilt.

ਏਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਚੇ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੩੫॥

एहु हमारा जीवणा तू साहिब सचे वेखु ॥३५॥

Ehu hamaaraa jeeva(nn)aa too saahib sache vekhu ||35||

Behold, this is my life, O my True Lord and Master. ||35||


ਬਿਰਹਾ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਤੂ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥

बिरहा बिरहा आखीऐ बिरहा तू सुलतानु ॥

Birahaa birahaa aakheeai birahaa too sulataanu ||

Many talk of the pain and suffering of separation; O pain, you are the ruler of all.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਮਸਾਨੁ ॥੩੬॥

फरीदा जितु तनि बिरहु न ऊपजै सो तनु जाणु मसानु ॥३६॥

Phareedaa jitu tani birahu na upajai so tanu jaa(nn)u masaanu ||36||

Fareed, that body, within which love of the Lord does not well up - look upon that body as a cremation ground. ||36||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਏ ਵਿਸੁ ਗੰਦਲਾ ਧਰੀਆਂ ਖੰਡੁ ਲਿਵਾੜਿ ॥

फरीदा ए विसु गंदला धरीआं खंडु लिवाड़ि ॥

Phareedaa e visu ganddalaa dhareeaan khanddu livaa(rr)i ||

Fareed, these are poisonous sprouts coated with sugar.

ਇਕਿ ਰਾਹੇਦੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਇਕਿ ਰਾਧੀ ਗਏ ਉਜਾੜਿ ॥੩੭॥

इकि राहेदे रहि गए इकि राधी गए उजाड़ि ॥३७॥

Iki raahede rahi gae iki raadhee gae ujaa(rr)i ||37||

Some die planting them, and some are ruined, harvesting and enjoying them. ||37||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਹੰਢਿ ਕੈ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੰਮਿ ॥

फरीदा चारि गवाइआ हंढि कै चारि गवाइआ समि ॥

Phareedaa chaari gavaaiaa handdhi kai chaari gavaaiaa sammi ||

Fareed, the hours of the day are lost wandering around, and the hours of the night are lost in sleep.

ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਤੂ ਆਂਹੋ ਕੇਰ੍ਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ॥੩੮॥

लेखा रबु मंगेसीआ तू आंहो केर्हे कमि ॥३८॥

Lekhaa rabu manggeseeaa too aanho kerhe kammi ||38||

God will call for your account, and ask you why you came into this world. ||38||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵਾਜੈ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਿਉ ਡਿਠੋ ਘੜੀਆਲੁ ॥

फरीदा दरि दरवाजै जाइ कै किउ डिठो घड़ीआलु ॥

Phareedaa dari daravaajai jaai kai kiu ditho gha(rr)eeaalu ||

Fareed, you have gone to the Lord's Door. Have you seen the gong there?

ਏਹੁ ਨਿਦੋਸਾਂ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਹਮ ਦੋਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੩੯॥

एहु निदोसां मारीऐ हम दोसां दा किआ हालु ॥३९॥

Ehu nidosaan maareeai ham dosaan daa kiaa haalu ||39||

This blameless object is being beaten - imagine what is in store for us sinners! ||39||


ਘੜੀਏ ਘੜੀਏ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਪਹਰੀ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

घड़ीए घड़ीए मारीऐ पहरी लहै सजाइ ॥

Gha(rr)eee gha(rr)eee maareeai paharee lahai sajaai ||

Each and every hour, it is beaten; it is punished every day.

ਸੋ ਹੇੜਾ ਘੜੀਆਲ ਜਿਉ ਡੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪੦॥

सो हेड़ा घड़ीआल जिउ डुखी रैणि विहाइ ॥४०॥

So he(rr)aa gha(rr)eeaal jiu dukhee rai(nn)i vihaai ||40||

This beautiful body is like the gong; it passes the night in pain. ||40||


ਬੁਢਾ ਹੋਆ ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦੁ ਕੰਬਣਿ ਲਗੀ ਦੇਹ ॥

बुढा होआ सेख फरीदु क्मबणि लगी देह ॥

Budhaa hoaa sekh phareedu kambba(nn)i lagee deh ||

Shaykh Fareed has grown old, and his body has begun to tremble.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਭੀ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਸੀ ਖੇਹ ॥੪੧॥

जे सउ वर्हिआ जीवणा भी तनु होसी खेह ॥४१॥

Je sau varhiaa jeeva(nn)aa bhee tanu hosee kheh ||41||

Even if he could live for hundreds of years, his body will eventually turn to dust. ||41||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬਾਰਿ ਪਰਾਇਐ ਬੈਸਣਾ ਸਾਂਈ ਮੁਝੈ ਨ ਦੇਹਿ ॥

फरीदा बारि पराइऐ बैसणा सांई मुझै न देहि ॥

Phareedaa baari paraaiai baisa(nn)aa saanee mujhai na dehi ||

Fareed begs, O Lord, do not make me sit at another's door.

ਜੇ ਤੂ ਏਵੈ ਰਖਸੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਰੀਰਹੁ ਲੇਹਿ ॥੪੨॥

जे तू एवै रखसी जीउ सरीरहु लेहि ॥४२॥

Je too evai rakhasee jeeu sareerahu lehi ||42||

If this is the way you are going to keep me, then go ahead and take the life out of my body. ||42||


ਕੰਧਿ ਕੁਹਾੜਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਘੜਾ ਵਣਿ ਕੈ ਸਰੁ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥

कंधि कुहाड़ा सिरि घड़ा वणि कै सरु लोहारु ॥

Kanddhi kuhaa(rr)aa siri gha(rr)aa va(nn)i kai saru lohaaru ||

With the axe on his shoulder, and a bucket on his head, the blacksmith is ready to cut down the tree.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਹਉ ਲੋੜੀ ਸਹੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਤੂ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਅੰਗਿਆਰ ॥੪੩॥

फरीदा हउ लोड़ी सहु आपणा तू लोड़हि अंगिआर ॥४३॥

Phareedaa hau lo(rr)ee sahu aapa(nn)aa too lo(rr)ahi anggiaar ||43||

Fareed, I long for my Lord; you long only for the charcoal. ||43||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਇਕਨਾ ਆਟਾ ਅਗਲਾ ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੋਣੁ ॥

फरीदा इकना आटा अगला इकना नाही लोणु ॥

Phareedaa ikanaa aataa agalaa ikanaa naahee lo(nn)u ||

Fareed, some have lots of flour, while others do not even have salt.

ਅਗੈ ਗਏ ਸਿੰਞਾਪਸਨਿ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਸੀ ਕਉਣੁ ॥੪੪॥

अगै गए सिंञापसनि चोटां खासी कउणु ॥४४॥

Agai gae sin(ny)aapasani chotaan khaasee kau(nn)u ||44||

When they go beyond this world, it shall be seen, who will be punished. ||44||


ਪਾਸਿ ਦਮਾਮੇ ਛਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਭੇਰੀ ਸਡੋ ਰਡ ॥

पासि दमामे छतु सिरि भेरी सडो रड ॥

Paasi damaame chhatu siri bheree sado rad ||

Drums were beaten in their honor, there were canopies above their heads, and bugles announced their coming.

ਜਾਇ ਸੁਤੇ ਜੀਰਾਣ ਮਹਿ ਥੀਏ ਅਤੀਮਾ ਗਡ ॥੪੫॥

जाइ सुते जीराण महि थीए अतीमा गड ॥४५॥

Jaai sute jeeraa(nn) mahi theee ateemaa gad ||45||

They have gone to sleep in the cemetary, buried like poor orphans. ||45||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਉਸਾਰੇਦੇ ਭੀ ਗਏ ॥

फरीदा कोठे मंडप माड़ीआ उसारेदे भी गए ॥

Phareedaa kothe manddap maa(rr)eeaa usaarede bhee gae ||

Fareed, those who built houses, mansions and lofty buildings, are also gone.

ਕੂੜਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ ਗੋਰੀ ਆਇ ਪਏ ॥੪੬॥

कूड़ा सउदा करि गए गोरी आइ पए ॥४६॥

Koo(rr)aa saudaa kari gae goree aai pae ||46||

They made false deals, and were dropped into their graves. ||46||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਖਿੰਥੜਿ ਮੇਖਾ ਅਗਲੀਆ ਜਿੰਦੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਮੇਖ ॥

फरीदा खिंथड़ि मेखा अगलीआ जिंदु न काई मेख ॥

Phareedaa khinttha(rr)i mekhaa agaleeaa jinddu na kaaee mekh ||

Fareed, there are many seams on the patched coat, but there are no seams on the soul.

ਵਾਰੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਚਲੇ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਸੇਖ ॥੪੭॥

वारी आपो आपणी चले मसाइक सेख ॥४७॥

Vaaree aapo aapa(nn)ee chale masaaik sekh ||47||

The shaykhs and their disciples have all departed, each in his own turn. ||47||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੁਹੁ ਦੀਵੀ ਬਲੰਦਿਆ ਮਲਕੁ ਬਹਿਠਾ ਆਇ ॥

फरीदा दुहु दीवी बलंदिआ मलकु बहिठा आइ ॥

Phareedaa duhu deevee balanddiaa malaku bahithaa aai ||

Fareed, the two lamps are lit, but death has come anyway.

ਗੜੁ ਲੀਤਾ ਘਟੁ ਲੁਟਿਆ ਦੀਵੜੇ ਗਇਆ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥੪੮॥

गड़ु लीता घटु लुटिआ दीवड़े गइआ बुझाइ ॥४८॥

Ga(rr)u leetaa ghatu lutiaa deeva(rr)e gaiaa bujhaai ||48||

It has captured the fortress of the body, and plundered the home of the heart; it extinguishes the lamps and departs. ||48||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਵੇਖੁ ਕਪਾਹੈ ਜਿ ਥੀਆ ਜਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਥੀਆ ਤਿਲਾਹ ॥

फरीदा वेखु कपाहै जि थीआ जि सिरि थीआ तिलाह ॥

Phareedaa vekhu kapaahai ji theeaa ji siri theeaa tilaah ||

Fareed, look at what has happened to the cotton and the sesame seed,

ਕਮਾਦੈ ਅਰੁ ਕਾਗਦੈ ਕੁੰਨੇ ਕੋਇਲਿਆਹ ॥

कमादै अरु कागदै कुंने कोइलिआह ॥

Kamaadai aru kaagadai kunne koiliaah ||

The sugar cane and paper, the clay pots and the charcoal.

ਮੰਦੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਰੇਦਿਆ ਏਹ ਸਜਾਇ ਤਿਨਾਹ ॥੪੯॥

मंदे अमल करेदिआ एह सजाइ तिनाह ॥४९॥

Mandde amal karediaa eh sajaai tinaah ||49||

This is the punishment for those who do evil deeds. ||49||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਸੂਫੁ ਗਲਿ ਦਿਲਿ ਕਾਤੀ ਗੁੜੁ ਵਾਤਿ ॥

फरीदा कंनि मुसला सूफु गलि दिलि काती गुड़ु वाति ॥

Phareedaa kanni musalaa soophu gali dili kaatee gu(rr)u vaati ||

Fareed, you wear your prayer shawl on your shoulders and the robes of a Sufi; your words are sweet, but there is a dagger in your heart.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦਿਸੈ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਦਿਲਿ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੫੦॥

बाहरि दिसै चानणा दिलि अंधिआरी राति ॥५०॥

Baahari disai chaana(nn)aa dili anddhiaaree raati ||50||

Outwardly, you look bright, but your heart is dark as night. ||50||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਤੀ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਜੇ ਤਨੁ ਚੀਰੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

फरीदा रती रतु न निकलै जे तनु चीरै कोइ ॥

Phareedaa ratee ratu na nikalai je tanu cheerai koi ||

Fareed, not even a drop of blood would issue forth, if someone cut my body.

ਜੋ ਤਨ ਰਤੇ ਰਬ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਨ ਤਨਿ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫੧॥

जो तन रते रब सिउ तिन तनि रतु न होइ ॥५१॥

Jo tan rate rab siu tin tani ratu na hoi ||51||

Those bodies which are imbued with the Lord - those bodies contain no blood. ||51||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸੋਈ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਢੂਢਿ ਲਹੁ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਲਭੀ ਵਥੁ ॥

फरीदा सोई सरवरु ढूढि लहु जिथहु लभी वथु ॥

Phareedaa soee saravaru dhoodhi lahu jithahu labhee vathu ||

Fareed, seek that sacred pool, in which the genuine article is found.

ਛਪੜਿ ਢੂਢੈ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਚਿਕੜਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਹਥੁ ॥੫੩॥

छपड़ि ढूढै किआ होवै चिकड़ि डुबै हथु ॥५३॥

Chhapa(rr)i dhoodhai kiaa hovai chika(rr)i dubai hathu ||53||

Why do you bother to search in the pond? Your hand will only sink into the mud. ||53||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਨੰਢੀ ਕੰਤੁ ਨ ਰਾਵਿਓ ਵਡੀ ਥੀ ਮੁਈਆਸੁ ॥

फरीदा नंढी कंतु न राविओ वडी थी मुईआसु ॥

Phareedaa nanddhee kanttu na raavio vadee thee mueeaasu ||

Fareed, when she is young, she does not enjoy her Husband. When she grows up, she dies.

ਧਨ ਕੂਕੇਂਦੀ ਗੋਰ ਮੇਂ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੀਆਸੁ ॥੫੪॥

धन कूकेंदी गोर में तै सह ना मिलीआसु ॥५४॥

Dhan kookendee gor men tai sah naa mileeaasu ||54||

Lying in the grave, the soul-bride cries, ""I did not meet You, my Lord."" ||54||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਿਰੁ ਪਲਿਆ ਦਾੜੀ ਪਲੀ ਮੁਛਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਲੀਆਂ ॥

फरीदा सिरु पलिआ दाड़ी पली मुछां भी पलीआं ॥

Phareedaa siru paliaa daa(rr)ee palee muchhaan bhee paleeaan ||

Fareed, your hair has turned grey, your beard has turned grey, and your moustache has turned grey.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਗਹਿਲੇ ਬਾਵਲੇ ਮਾਣਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਰਲੀਆਂ ॥੫੫॥

रे मन गहिले बावले माणहि किआ रलीआं ॥५५॥

Re man gahile baavale maa(nn)ahi kiaa raleeaan ||55||

O my thoughtless and insane mind, why are you indulging in pleasures? ||55||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੋਠੇ ਧੁਕਣੁ ਕੇਤੜਾ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦੜੀ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥

फरीदा कोठे धुकणु केतड़ा पिर नीदड़ी निवारि ॥

Phareedaa kothe dhuka(nn)u keta(rr)aa pir needa(rr)ee nivaari ||

Fareed, how long can you run on the rooftop? You are asleep to your Husband Lord - give it up!

ਜੋ ਦਿਹ ਲਧੇ ਗਾਣਵੇ ਗਏ ਵਿਲਾੜਿ ਵਿਲਾੜਿ ॥੫੬॥

जो दिह लधे गाणवे गए विलाड़ि विलाड़ि ॥५६॥

Jo dih ladhe gaa(nn)ave gae vilaa(rr)i vilaa(rr)i ||56||

The days which were allotted to you are numbered, and they are passing, passing away. ||56||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਏਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਏ ਚਿਤੁ ॥

फरीदा कोठे मंडप माड़ीआ एतु न लाए चितु ॥

Phareedaa kothe manddap maa(rr)eeaa etu na laae chitu ||

Fareed, houses, mansions and balconies - do not attach your consciousness to these.

ਮਿਟੀ ਪਈ ਅਤੋਲਵੀ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਸੀ ਮਿਤੁ ॥੫੭॥

मिटी पई अतोलवी कोइ न होसी मितु ॥५७॥

Mitee paee atolavee koi na hosee mitu ||57||

When these collapse into heaps of dust, none of them will be your friend. ||57||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇ ਮਰਗ ਸਤਾਣੀ ਚਿਤਿ ਧਰਿ ॥

फरीदा मंडप मालु न लाइ मरग सताणी चिति धरि ॥

Phareedaa manddap maalu na laai marag sataa(nn)ee chiti dhari ||

Fareed, do not focus on mansions and wealth; center your consciousness on death, your powerful enemy.

ਸਾਈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ਜਿਥੈ ਹੀ ਤਉ ਵੰਞਣਾ ॥੫੮॥

साई जाइ सम्हालि जिथै ही तउ वंञणा ॥५८॥

Saaee jaai samhaali jithai hee tau van(ny)a(nn)aa ||58||

Remember that place where you must go. ||58||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਕੰਮੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਕੰਮੜੇ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥

फरीदा जिन्ही कमी नाहि गुण ते कमड़े विसारि ॥

Phareedaa jinhee kammee naahi gu(nn) te kamma(rr)e visaari ||

Fareed, those deeds which do not bring merit - forget about those deeds.

ਮਤੁ ਸਰਮਿੰਦਾ ਥੀਵਹੀ ਸਾਂਈ ਦੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੫੯॥

मतु सरमिंदा थीवही सांई दै दरबारि ॥५९॥

Matu saraminddaa theevahee saanee dai darabaari ||59||

Otherwise, you shall be put to shame, in the Court of the Lord. ||59||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਲਾਹਿ ਭਰਾਂਦਿ ॥

फरीदा साहिब दी करि चाकरी दिल दी लाहि भरांदि ॥

Phareedaa saahib dee kari chaakaree dil dee laahi bharaandi ||

Fareed, work for your Lord and Master; dispel the doubts of your heart.

ਦਰਵੇਸਾਂ ਨੋ ਲੋੜੀਐ ਰੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਰਾਂਦਿ ॥੬੦॥

दरवेसां नो लोड़ीऐ रुखां दी जीरांदि ॥६०॥

Daravesaan no lo(rr)eeai rukhaan dee jeeraandi ||60||

The dervishes, the humble devotees, have the patient endurance of trees. ||60||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੈਡੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਕਾਲਾ ਮੈਡਾ ਵੇਸੁ ॥

फरीदा काले मैडे कपड़े काला मैडा वेसु ॥

Phareedaa kaale maide kapa(rr)e kaalaa maidaa vesu ||

Fareed, my clothes are black, and my outfit is black.

ਗੁਨਹੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਮੈ ਫਿਰਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਦਰਵੇਸੁ ॥੬੧॥

गुनही भरिआ मै फिरा लोकु कहै दरवेसु ॥६१॥

Gunahee bhariaa mai phiraa loku kahai daravesu ||61||

I wander around full of sins, and yet people call me a dervish - a holy man. ||61||


ਤਤੀ ਤੋਇ ਨ ਪਲਵੈ ਜੇ ਜਲਿ ਟੁਬੀ ਦੇਇ ॥

तती तोइ न पलवै जे जलि टुबी देइ ॥

Tatee toi na palavai je jali tubee dei ||

The crop which is burnt will not bloom, even if it is soaked in water.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੋ ਡੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਰਬ ਦੀ ਝੂਰੇਦੀ ਝੂਰੇਇ ॥੬੨॥

फरीदा जो डोहागणि रब दी झूरेदी झूरेइ ॥६२॥

Phareedaa jo dohaaga(nn)i rab dee jhooredee jhoorei ||62||

Fareed, she who is forsaken by her Husband Lord, grieves and laments. ||62||


ਜਾਂ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਤਾ ਚਾਉ ਵੀਵਾਹੀ ਤਾਂ ਮਾਮਲੇ ॥

जां कुआरी ता चाउ वीवाही तां मामले ॥

Jaan kuaaree taa chaau veevaahee taan maamale ||

When she is a virgin, she is full of desire; but when she is married, then her troubles begin.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਏਹੋ ਪਛੋਤਾਉ ਵਤਿ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਨ ਥੀਐ ॥੬੩॥

फरीदा एहो पछोताउ वति कुआरी न थीऐ ॥६३॥

Phareedaa eho pachhotaau vati kuaaree na theeai ||63||

Fareed, she has this one regret, that she cannot be a virgin again. ||63||


ਕਲਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਛਪੜੀ ਆਇ ਉਲਥੇ ਹੰਝ ॥

कलर केरी छपड़ी आइ उलथे हंझ ॥

Kalar keree chhapa(rr)ee aai ulathe hanjjh ||

The swans have landed in a small pond of salt water.

ਚਿੰਜੂ ਬੋੜਨੑਿ ਨਾ ਪੀਵਹਿ ਉਡਣ ਸੰਦੀ ਡੰਝ ॥੬੪॥

चिंजू बोड़न्हि ना पीवहि उडण संदी डंझ ॥६४॥

Chinjjoo bo(rr)anhi naa peevahi uda(nn) sanddee danjjh ||64||

They dip in their bills, but do not drink; they fly away, still thirsty. ||64||


ਹੰਸੁ ਉਡਰਿ ਕੋਧ੍ਰੈ ਪਇਆ ਲੋਕੁ ਵਿਡਾਰਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

हंसु उडरि कोध्रै पइआ लोकु विडारणि जाइ ॥

Hanssu udari kodhrai paiaa loku vidaara(nn)i jaai ||

The swans fly away, and land in the fields of grain. The people go to chase them away.

ਗਹਿਲਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੰਸੁ ਨ ਕੋਧ੍ਰਾ ਖਾਇ ॥੬੫॥

गहिला लोकु न जाणदा हंसु न कोध्रा खाइ ॥६५॥

Gahilaa loku na jaa(nn)adaa hanssu na kodhraa khaai ||65||

The thoughtless people do not know, that the swans do not eat the grain. ||65||


ਚਲਿ ਚਲਿ ਗਈਆਂ ਪੰਖੀਆਂ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਵਸਾਏ ਤਲ ॥

चलि चलि गईआं पंखीआं जिन्ही वसाए तल ॥

Chali chali gaeeaan pankkheeaan jinhee vasaae tal ||

The birds which lived in the pools have flown away and left.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਰੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਭੀ ਚਲਸੀ ਥਕੇ ਕਵਲ ਇਕਲ ॥੬੬॥

फरीदा सरु भरिआ भी चलसी थके कवल इकल ॥६६॥

Phareedaa saru bhariaa bhee chalasee thake kaval ikal ||66||

Fareed, the overflowing pool shall also pass away, and only the lotus flowers shall remain. ||66||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਇਟ ਸਿਰਾਣੇ ਭੁਇ ਸਵਣੁ ਕੀੜਾ ਲੜਿਓ ਮਾਸਿ ॥

फरीदा इट सिराणे भुइ सवणु कीड़ा लड़िओ मासि ॥

Phareedaa it siraa(nn)e bhui sava(nn)u kee(rr)aa la(rr)io maasi ||

Fareed, a stone will be your pillow, and the earth will be your bed. The worms shall eat into your flesh.

ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਜੁਗ ਵਾਪਰੇ ਇਕਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੬੭॥

केतड़िआ जुग वापरे इकतु पइआ पासि ॥६७॥

Keta(rr)iaa jug vaapare ikatu paiaa paasi ||67||

Countless ages will pass, and you will still be lying on one side. ||67||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਭੰਨੀ ਘੜੀ ਸਵੰਨਵੀ ਟੁਟੀ ਨਾਗਰ ਲਜੁ ॥

फरीदा भंनी घड़ी सवंनवी टुटी नागर लजु ॥

Phareedaa bhannee gha(rr)ee savannavee tutee naagar laju ||

Fareed, your beautiful body shall break apart, and the subtle thread of the breath shall be snapped.

ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਨਾਠੀ ਅਜੁ ॥੬੮॥

अजराईलु फरेसता कै घरि नाठी अजु ॥६८॥

Ajaraaeelu pharesataa kai ghari naathee aju ||68||

In which house will the Messenger of Death be a guest today? ||68||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਭੰਨੀ ਘੜੀ ਸਵੰਨਵੀ ਟੂਟੀ ਨਾਗਰ ਲਜੁ ॥

फरीदा भंनी घड़ी सवंनवी टूटी नागर लजु ॥

Phareedaa bhannee gha(rr)ee savannavee tootee naagar laju ||

Fareed, your beautiful body shall break apart, and the subtle thread of the breath shall be snapped.

ਜੋ ਸਜਣ ਭੁਇ ਭਾਰੁ ਥੇ ਸੇ ਕਿਉ ਆਵਹਿ ਅਜੁ ॥੬੯॥

जो सजण भुइ भारु थे से किउ आवहि अजु ॥६९॥

Jo saja(nn) bhui bhaaru the se kiu aavahi aju ||69||

Those friends who were a burden on the earth - how can they come today? ||69||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬੇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਕੁਤਿਆ ਏਹ ਨ ਭਲੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥

फरीदा बे निवाजा कुतिआ एह न भली रीति ॥

Phareedaa be nivaajaa kutiaa eh na bhalee reeti ||

Fareed: O faithless dog, this is not a good way of life.

ਕਬਹੀ ਚਲਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਪੰਜੇ ਵਖਤ ਮਸੀਤਿ ॥੭੦॥

कबही चलि न आइआ पंजे वखत मसीति ॥७०॥

Kabahee chali na aaiaa panjje vakhat maseeti ||70||

You never come to the mosque for your five daily prayers. ||70||


ਉਠੁ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਉਜੂ ਸਾਜਿ ਸੁਬਹ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਗੁਜਾਰਿ ॥

उठु फरीदा उजू साजि सुबह निवाज गुजारि ॥

Uthu phareedaa ujoo saaji subah nivaaj gujaari ||

Rise up, Fareed, and cleanse yourself; chant your morning prayer.

ਜੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਸਾਂਈ ਨਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਕਪਿ ਉਤਾਰਿ ॥੭੧॥

जो सिरु सांई ना निवै सो सिरु कपि उतारि ॥७१॥

Jo siru saanee naa nivai so siru kapi utaari ||71||

The head which does not bow to the Lord - chop off and remove that head. ||71||


ਜੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਸਾਈ ਨਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਿਰੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਕਾਂਇ ॥

जो सिरु साई ना निवै सो सिरु कीजै कांइ ॥

Jo siru saaee naa nivai so siru keejai kaani ||

That head which does not bow to the Lord - what is to be done with that head?

ਕੁੰਨੇ ਹੇਠਿ ਜਲਾਈਐ ਬਾਲਣ ਸੰਦੈ ਥਾਇ ॥੭੨॥

कुंने हेठि जलाईऐ बालण संदै थाइ ॥७२॥

Kunne hethi jalaaeeai baala(nn) sanddai thaai ||72||

Put it in the fireplace, instead of firewood. ||72||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਿਥੈ ਤੈਡੇ ਮਾਪਿਆ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਤੂ ਜਣਿਓਹਿ ॥

फरीदा किथै तैडे मापिआ जिन्ही तू जणिओहि ॥

Phareedaa kithai taide maapiaa jinhee too ja(nn)iohi ||

Fareed, where are your mother and father, who gave birth to you?

ਤੈ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਓਇ ਲਦਿ ਗਏ ਤੂੰ ਅਜੈ ਨ ਪਤੀਣੋਹਿ ॥੭੩॥

तै पासहु ओइ लदि गए तूं अजै न पतीणोहि ॥७३॥

Tai paasahu oi ladi gae toonn ajai na patee(nn)ohi ||73||

They have left you, but even so, you are not convinced that you shall also have to go. ||73||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੈਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਟੋਏ ਟਿਬੇ ਲਾਹਿ ॥

फरीदा मनु मैदानु करि टोए टिबे लाहि ॥

Phareedaa manu maidaanu kari toe tibe laahi ||

Fareed, flatten out your mind; smooth out the hills and valleys.

ਅਗੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਆਵਸੀ ਦੋਜਕ ਸੰਦੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੭੪॥

अगै मूलि न आवसी दोजक संदी भाहि ॥७४॥

Agai mooli na aavasee dojak sanddee bhaahi ||74||

Hereafter, the fires of hell shall not even approach you. ||74||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿ ਦਿਹਿ ਨਾਲਾ ਕਪਿਆ ਜੇ ਗਲੁ ਕਪਹਿ ਚੁਖ ॥

फरीदा जि दिहि नाला कपिआ जे गलु कपहि चुख ॥

Phareedaa ji dihi naalaa kapiaa je galu kapahi chukh ||

Fareed, if on that day when my umbilical cord was cut, my throat had been cut instead,

ਪਵਨਿ ਨ ਇਤੀ ਮਾਮਲੇ ਸਹਾਂ ਨ ਇਤੀ ਦੁਖ ॥੭੬॥

पवनि न इती मामले सहां न इती दुख ॥७६॥

Pavani na itee maamale sahaan na itee dukh ||76||

I would not have fallen into so many troubles, or undergone so many hardships. ||76||


ਚਬਣ ਚਲਣ ਰਤੰਨ ਸੇ ਸੁਣੀਅਰ ਬਹਿ ਗਏ ॥

चबण चलण रतंन से सुणीअर बहि गए ॥

Chaba(nn) chala(nn) ratann se su(nn)eear bahi gae ||

My teeth, feet, eyes and ears have stopped working.

ਹੇੜੇ ਮੁਤੀ ਧਾਹ ਸੇ ਜਾਨੀ ਚਲਿ ਗਏ ॥੭੭॥

हेड़े मुती धाह से जानी चलि गए ॥७७॥

He(rr)e mutee dhaah se jaanee chali gae ||77||

My body cries out, ""Those whom I knew have left me!"" ||77||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਬੁਰੇ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਸਾ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਹਢਾਇ ॥

फरीदा बुरे दा भला करि गुसा मनि न हढाइ ॥

Phareedaa bure daa bhalaa kari gusaa mani na hadhaai ||

Fareed, answer evil with goodness; do not fill your mind with anger.

ਦੇਹੀ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਪਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੭੮॥

देही रोगु न लगई पलै सभु किछु पाइ ॥७८॥

Dehee rogu na lagaee palai sabhu kichhu paai ||78||

Your body shall not suffer from any disease, and you shall obtain everything. ||78||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪੰਖ ਪਰਾਹੁਣੀ ਦੁਨੀ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਬਾਗੁ ॥

फरीदा पंख पराहुणी दुनी सुहावा बागु ॥

Phareedaa pankkh paraahu(nn)ee dunee suhaavaa baagu ||

Fareed, the bird is a guest in this beautiful world-garden.

ਨਉਬਤਿ ਵਜੀ ਸੁਬਹ ਸਿਉ ਚਲਣ ਕਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜੁ ॥੭੯॥

नउबति वजी सुबह सिउ चलण का करि साजु ॥७९॥

Naubati vajee subah siu chala(nn) kaa kari saaju ||79||

The morning drums are beating - get ready to leave! ||79||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਾਤਿ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਵੰਡੀਐ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਭਾਉ ॥

फरीदा राति कथूरी वंडीऐ सुतिआ मिलै न भाउ ॥

Phareedaa raati kathooree vanddeeai sutiaa milai na bhaau ||

Fareed, musk is released at night. Those who are sleeping do not receive their share.

ਜਿੰਨੑਾ ਨੈਣ ਨੀਂਦ੍ਰਾਵਲੇ ਤਿੰਨੑਾ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਕੁਆਉ ॥੮੦॥

जिंन्हा नैण नींद्रावले तिंन्हा मिलणु कुआउ ॥८०॥

Jinnhaa nai(nn) neendraavale tinnhaa mila(nn)u kuaau ||80||

Those whose eyes are heavy with sleep - how can they receive it? ||80||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੈ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੁਝ ਕੂ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਐ ਜਗਿ ॥

फरीदा मै जानिआ दुखु मुझ कू दुखु सबाइऐ जगि ॥

Phareedaa mai jaaniaa dukhu mujh koo dukhu sabaaiai jagi ||

Fareed, I thought that I was in trouble; the whole world is in trouble!

ਊਚੇ ਚੜਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਹਾ ਅਗਿ ॥੮੧॥

ऊचे चड़ि कै देखिआ तां घरि घरि एहा अगि ॥८१॥

Uche cha(rr)i kai dekhiaa taan ghari ghari ehaa agi ||81||

When I climbed the hill and looked around, I saw this fire in each and every home. ||81||


ਕੰਧੀ ਵਹਣ ਨ ਢਾਹਿ ਤਉ ਭੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਦੇਵਣਾ ॥

कंधी वहण न ढाहि तउ भी लेखा देवणा ॥

Kanddhee vaha(nn) na dhaahi tau bhee lekhaa deva(nn)aa ||

O river, do not destroy your banks; you too will be asked to give your account.

ਜਿਧਰਿ ਰਬ ਰਜਾਇ ਵਹਣੁ ਤਿਦਾਊ ਗੰਉ ਕਰੇ ॥੮੪॥

जिधरि रब रजाइ वहणु तिदाऊ गंउ करे ॥८४॥

Jidhari rab rajaai vaha(nn)u tidaau gannu kare ||84||

The river flows in whatever direction the Lord orders. ||84||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਡੁਖਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਦਿਹੁ ਗਇਆ ਸੂਲਾਂ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

फरीदा डुखा सेती दिहु गइआ सूलां सेती राति ॥

Phareedaa dukhaa setee dihu gaiaa soolaan setee raati ||

Fareed, the day passes painfully; the night is spent in anguish.

ਖੜਾ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪਾਤਣੀ ਬੇੜਾ ਕਪਰ ਵਾਤਿ ॥੮੫॥

खड़ा पुकारे पातणी बेड़ा कपर वाति ॥८५॥

Kha(rr)aa pukaare paata(nn)ee be(rr)aa kapar vaati ||85||

The boatman stands up and shouts, ""The boat is caught in the whirlpool!"" ||85||


ਲੰਮੀ ਲੰਮੀ ਨਦੀ ਵਹੈ ਕੰਧੀ ਕੇਰੈ ਹੇਤਿ ॥

लमी लमी नदी वहै कंधी केरै हेति ॥

Lammee lammee nadee vahai kanddhee kerai heti ||

The river flows on and on; it loves to eat into its banks.

ਬੇੜੇ ਨੋ ਕਪਰੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਪਾਤਣ ਰਹੈ ਸੁਚੇਤਿ ॥੮੬॥

बेड़े नो कपरु किआ करे जे पातण रहै सुचेति ॥८६॥

Be(rr)e no kaparu kiaa kare je paata(nn) rahai sucheti ||86||

What can the whirlpool do to the boat, if the boatman remains alert? ||86||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਲੀਂ ਸੁ ਸਜਣ ਵੀਹ ਇਕੁ ਢੂੰਢੇਦੀ ਨ ਲਹਾਂ ॥

फरीदा गलीं सु सजण वीह इकु ढूंढेदी न लहां ॥

Phareedaa galeen su saja(nn) veeh iku dhoonddhedee na lahaan ||

Fareed, there are dozens who say they are friends; I search, but I cannot find even one.

ਧੁਖਾਂ ਜਿਉ ਮਾਂਲੀਹ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਿੰਨੑਾ ਮਾ ਪਿਰੀ ॥੮੭॥

धुखां जिउ मांलीह कारणि तिंन्हा मा पिरी ॥८७॥

Dhukhaan jiu maanleeh kaara(nn)i tinnhaa maa piree ||87||

I yearn for my beloved like a smoldering fire. ||87||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਭਉਕਣਾ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਦੁਖੀਐ ਕਉਣੁ ॥

फरीदा इहु तनु भउकणा नित नित दुखीऐ कउणु ॥

Phareedaa ihu tanu bhauka(nn)aa nit nit dukheeai kau(nn)u ||

Fareed, this body is always barking. Who can stand this constant suffering?

ਕੰਨੀ ਬੁਜੇ ਦੇ ਰਹਾਂ ਕਿਤੀ ਵਗੈ ਪਉਣੁ ॥੮੮॥

कंनी बुजे दे रहां किती वगै पउणु ॥८८॥

Kannee buje de rahaan kitee vagai pau(nn)u ||88||

I have put plugs in my ears; I don't care how much the wind is blowing. ||88||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਬ ਖਜੂਰੀ ਪਕੀਆਂ ਮਾਖਿਅ ਨਈ ਵਹੰਨੑਿ ॥

फरीदा रब खजूरी पकीआं माखिअ नई वहंन्हि ॥

Phareedaa rab khajooree pakeeaan maakhia naee vahannhi ||

Fareed, God's dates have ripened, and rivers of honey flow.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਵੰਞੈਂ ਡੀਹੜਾ ਸੋ ਉਮਰ ਹਥ ਪਵੰਨਿ ॥੮੯॥

जो जो वंञैं डीहड़ा सो उमर हथ पवंनि ॥८९॥

Jo jo van(ny)ain deeha(rr)aa so umar hath pavanni ||89||

With each passing day, your life is being stolen away. ||89||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਤਨੁ ਸੁਕਾ ਪਿੰਜਰੁ ਥੀਆ ਤਲੀਆਂ ਖੂੰਡਹਿ ਕਾਗ ॥

फरीदा तनु सुका पिंजरु थीआ तलीआं खूंडहि काग ॥

Phareedaa tanu sukaa pinjjaru theeaa taleeaan khoonddahi kaag ||

Fareed, my withered body has become a skeleton; the crows are pecking at my palms.

ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਰਬੁ ਨ ਬਾਹੁੜਿਓ ਦੇਖੁ ਬੰਦੇ ਕੇ ਭਾਗ ॥੯੦॥

अजै सु रबु न बाहुड़िओ देखु बंदे के भाग ॥९०॥

Ajai su rabu na baahu(rr)io dekhu bandde ke bhaag ||90||

Even now, God has not come to help me; behold, this is the fate of all mortal beings. ||90||


ਕਾਗਾ ਕਰੰਗ ਢੰਢੋਲਿਆ ਸਗਲਾ ਖਾਇਆ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

कागा करंग ढंढोलिआ सगला खाइआ मासु ॥

Kaagaa karangg dhanddholiaa sagalaa khaaiaa maasu ||

The crows have searched my skeleton, and eaten all my flesh.

ਏ ਦੁਇ ਨੈਨਾ ਮਤਿ ਛੁਹਉ ਪਿਰ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੀ ਆਸ ॥੯੧॥

ए दुइ नैना मति छुहउ पिर देखन की आस ॥९१॥

E dui nainaa mati chhuhau pir dekhan kee aas ||91||

But please do not touch these eyes; I hope to see my Lord. ||91||


ਕਾਗਾ ਚੂੰਡਿ ਨ ਪਿੰਜਰਾ ਬਸੈ ਤ ਉਡਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

कागा चूंडि न पिंजरा बसै त उडरि जाहि ॥

Kaagaa choonddi na pinjjaraa basai ta udari jaahi ||

O crow, do not peck at my skeleton; if you have landed on it, fly away.

ਜਿਤੁ ਪਿੰਜਰੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਾਸੁ ਨ ਤਿਦੂ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੯੨॥

जितु पिंजरै मेरा सहु वसै मासु न तिदू खाहि ॥९२॥

Jitu pinjjarai meraa sahu vasai maasu na tidoo khaahi ||92||

Do not eat the flesh from that skeleton, within which my Husband Lord abides. ||92||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗੋਰ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਸਡੁ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਘਰਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਉ ॥

फरीदा गोर निमाणी सडु करे निघरिआ घरि आउ ॥

Phareedaa gor nimaa(nn)ee sadu kare nighariaa ghari aau ||

Fareed, the poor grave calls out, ""O homeless one, come back to your home.

ਸਰਪਰ ਮੈਥੈ ਆਵਣਾ ਮਰਣਹੁ ਨਾ ਡਰਿਆਹੁ ॥੯੩॥

सरपर मैथै आवणा मरणहु ना डरिआहु ॥९३॥

Sarapar maithai aava(nn)aa mara(nn)ahu naa dariaahu ||93||

You shall surely have to come to me; do not be afraid of death."" ||93||


ਏਨੀ ਲੋਇਣੀ ਦੇਖਦਿਆ ਕੇਤੀ ਚਲਿ ਗਈ ॥

एनी लोइणी देखदिआ केती चलि गई ॥

Enee loi(nn)ee dekhadiaa ketee chali gaee ||

These eyes have seen a great many leave.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੈ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਈ ॥੯੪॥

फरीदा लोकां आपो आपणी मै आपणी पई ॥९४॥

Phareedaa lokaan aapo aapa(nn)ee mai aapa(nn)ee paee ||94||

Fareed, the people have their fate, and I have mine. ||94||


ਆਪੁ ਸਵਾਰਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਮੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

आपु सवारहि मै मिलहि मै मिलिआ सुखु होइ ॥

Aapu savaarahi mai milahi mai miliaa sukhu hoi ||

God says, ""If you reform yourself, you shall meet me, and meeting me, you shall be at peace.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੯੫॥

फरीदा जे तू मेरा होइ रहहि सभु जगु तेरा होइ ॥९५॥

Phareedaa je too meraa hoi rahahi sabhu jagu teraa hoi ||95||

O Fareed, if you will be mine, the whole world will be yours."" ||95||


ਕੰਧੀ ਉਤੈ ਰੁਖੜਾ ਕਿਚਰਕੁ ਬੰਨੈ ਧੀਰੁ ॥

कंधी उतै रुखड़ा किचरकु बंनै धीरु ॥

Kanddhee utai rukha(rr)aa kicharaku bannai dheeru ||

How long can the tree remain implanted on the river-bank?

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਚੈ ਭਾਂਡੈ ਰਖੀਐ ਕਿਚਰੁ ਤਾਈ ਨੀਰੁ ॥੯੬॥

फरीदा कचै भांडै रखीऐ किचरु ताई नीरु ॥९६॥

Phareedaa kachai bhaandai rakheeai kicharu taaee neeru ||96||

Fareed, how long can water be kept in a soft clay pot? ||96||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮਹਲ ਨਿਸਖਣ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਵਾਸਾ ਆਇਆ ਤਲਿ ॥

फरीदा महल निसखण रहि गए वासा आइआ तलि ॥

Phareedaa mahal nisakha(nn) rahi gae vaasaa aaiaa tali ||

Fareed, the mansions are vacant; those who lived in them have gone to live underground.

ਗੋਰਾਂ ਸੇ ਨਿਮਾਣੀਆ ਬਹਸਨਿ ਰੂਹਾਂ ਮਲਿ ॥

गोरां से निमाणीआ बहसनि रूहां मलि ॥

Goraan se nimaa(nn)eeaa bahasani roohaan mali ||

They remain there, in those unhonored graves.

ਆਖੀਂ ਸੇਖਾ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਚਲਣੁ ਅਜੁ ਕਿ ਕਲਿ ॥੯੭॥

आखीं सेखा बंदगी चलणु अजु कि कलि ॥९७॥

Aakheen sekhaa banddagee chala(nn)u aju ki kali ||97||

O Shaykh, dedicate yourself to God; you will have to depart, today or tomorrow. ||97||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮਉਤੈ ਦਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਏਵੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਜਿਉ ਦਰੀਆਵੈ ਢਾਹਾ ॥

फरीदा मउतै दा बंना एवै दिसै जिउ दरीआवै ढाहा ॥

Phareedaa mautai daa bannaa evai disai jiu dareeaavai dhaahaa ||

Fareed, the shore of death looks like the river-bank, being eroded away.

ਅਗੈ ਦੋਜਕੁ ਤਪਿਆ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਹੂਲ ਪਵੈ ਕਾਹਾਹਾ ॥

अगै दोजकु तपिआ सुणीऐ हूल पवै काहाहा ॥

Agai dojaku tapiaa su(nn)eeai hool pavai kaahaahaa ||

Beyond is the burning hell, from which cries and shrieks are heard.

ਇਕਨਾ ਨੋ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਆਈ ਇਕਿ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥

इकना नो सभ सोझी आई इकि फिरदे वेपरवाहा ॥

Ikanaa no sabh sojhee aaee iki phirade veparavaahaa ||

Some understand this completely, while others wander around carelessly.

ਅਮਲ ਜਿ ਕੀਤਿਆ ਦੁਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਓਗਾਹਾ ॥੯੮॥

अमल जि कीतिआ दुनी विचि से दरगह ओगाहा ॥९८॥

Amal ji keetiaa dunee vichi se daragah ogaahaa ||98||

Those actions which are done in this world, shall be examined in the Court of the Lord. ||98||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰੀਆਵੈ ਕੰਨੑੈ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ॥

फरीदा दरीआवै कंन्है बगुला बैठा केल करे ॥

Phareedaa dareeaavai kannhai bagulaa baithaa kel kare ||

Fareed, the crane perches on the river bank, playing joyfully.

ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇਦੇ ਹੰਝ ਨੋ ਅਚਿੰਤੇ ਬਾਜ ਪਏ ॥

केल करेदे हंझ नो अचिंते बाज पए ॥

Kel karede hanjjh no achintte baaj pae ||

While it is playing, a hawk suddenly pounces on it.

ਬਾਜ ਪਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਰਬ ਦੇ ਕੇਲਾਂ ਵਿਸਰੀਆਂ ॥

बाज पए तिसु रब दे केलां विसरीआं ॥

Baaj pae tisu rab de kelaan visareeaan ||

When the Hawk of God attacks, playful sport is forgotten.

ਜੋ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਚੇਤੇ ਸਨਿ ਸੋ ਗਾਲੀ ਰਬ ਕੀਆਂ ॥੯੯॥

जो मनि चिति न चेते सनि सो गाली रब कीआं ॥९९॥

Jo mani chiti na chete sani so gaalee rab keeaan ||99||

God does what is not expected or even considered. ||99||


ਸਾਢੇ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਮਣ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਨਿ ॥

साढे त्रै मण देहुरी चलै पाणी अंनि ॥

Saadhe trai ma(nn) dehuree chalai paa(nn)ee anni ||

The body is nourished by water and grain.

ਆਇਓ ਬੰਦਾ ਦੁਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਤਿ ਆਸੂਣੀ ਬੰਨੑਿ ॥

आइओ बंदा दुनी विचि वति आसूणी बंन्हि ॥

Aaio banddaa dunee vichi vati aasoo(nn)ee bannhi ||

The mortal comes into the world with high hopes.

ਮਲਕਲ ਮਉਤ ਜਾਂ ਆਵਸੀ ਸਭ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਭੰਨਿ ॥

मलकल मउत जां आवसी सभ दरवाजे भंनि ॥

Malakal maut jaan aavasee sabh daravaaje bhanni ||

But when the Messenger of Death comes, it breaks down all the doors.

ਤਿਨੑਾ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਭਾਈਆਂ ਅਗੈ ਦਿਤਾ ਬੰਨੑਿ ॥

तिन्हा पिआरिआ भाईआं अगै दिता बंन्हि ॥

Tinhaa piaariaa bhaaeeaan agai ditaa bannhi ||

It binds and gags the mortal, before the eyes of his beloved brothers.

ਵੇਖਹੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਚਲਿਆ ਚਹੁ ਜਣਿਆ ਦੈ ਕੰਨੑਿ ॥

वेखहु बंदा चलिआ चहु जणिआ दै कंन्हि ॥

Vekhahu banddaa chaliaa chahu ja(nn)iaa dai kannhi ||

Behold, the mortal being is going away, carried on the shoulders of four men.

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਅਮਲ ਜਿ ਕੀਤੇ ਦੁਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਆਏ ਕੰਮਿ ॥੧੦੦॥

फरीदा अमल जि कीते दुनी विचि दरगह आए कमि ॥१००॥

Phareedaa amal ji keete dunee vichi daragah aae kammi ||100||

Fareed, only those good deeds done in the world will be of any use in the Court of the Lord. ||100||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਨੑ ਪੰਖੀਆ ਜੰਗਲਿ ਜਿੰਨੑਾ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

फरीदा हउ बलिहारी तिन्ह पंखीआ जंगलि जिंन्हा वासु ॥

Phareedaa hau balihaaree tinh pankkheeaa janggali jinnhaa vaasu ||

Fareed, I am a sacrifice to those birds which live in the jungle.

ਕਕਰੁ ਚੁਗਨਿ ਥਲਿ ਵਸਨਿ ਰਬ ਨ ਛੋਡਨਿ ਪਾਸੁ ॥੧੦੧॥

ककरु चुगनि थलि वसनि रब न छोडनि पासु ॥१०१॥

Kakaru chugani thali vasani rab na chhodani paasu ||101||

They peck at the roots and live on the ground, but they do not leave the Lord's side. ||101||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰੁਤਿ ਫਿਰੀ ਵਣੁ ਕੰਬਿਆ ਪਤ ਝੜੇ ਝੜਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

फरीदा रुति फिरी वणु क्मबिआ पत झड़े झड़ि पाहि ॥

Phareedaa ruti phiree va(nn)u kambbiaa pat jha(rr)e jha(rr)i paahi ||

Fareed, the seasons change, the woods shake and the leaves drop from the trees.

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਢੂੰਢੀਆਂ ਰਹਣੁ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧੦੨॥

चारे कुंडा ढूंढीआं रहणु किथाऊ नाहि ॥१०२॥

Chaare kunddaa dhoonddheeaan raha(nn)u kithaau naahi ||102||

I have searched in the four directions, but I have not found any resting place anywhere. ||102||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪਾੜਿ ਪਟੋਲਾ ਧਜ ਕਰੀ ਕੰਬਲੜੀ ਪਹਿਰੇਉ ॥

फरीदा पाड़ि पटोला धज करी क्मबलड़ी पहिरेउ ॥

Phareedaa paa(rr)i patolaa dhaj karee kambbala(rr)ee pahireu ||

Fareed, I have torn my clothes to tatters; now I wear only a rough blanket.

ਜਿਨੑੀ ਵੇਸੀ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੇਈ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਉ ॥੧੦੩॥

जिन्ही वेसी सहु मिलै सेई वेस करेउ ॥१०३॥

Jinhee vesee sahu milai seee ves kareu ||103||

I wear only those clothes which will lead me to meet my Lord. ||103||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਮੁਖ ਡਰਾਵਣੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਓਨੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

फरीदा तिना मुख डरावणे जिना विसारिओनु नाउ ॥

Phareedaa tinaa mukh daraava(nn)e jinaa visaarionu naau ||

Fareed, the faces of those who forget the Lord's Name are dreadful.

ਐਥੈ ਦੁਖ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ ਅਗੈ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥੧੦੬॥

ऐथै दुख घणेरिआ अगै ठउर न ठाउ ॥१०६॥

Aithai dukh gha(nn)eriaa agai thaur na thaau ||106||

They suffer terrible pain here, and hereafter they find no place of rest or refuge. ||106||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪਿਛਲ ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਿਓਹਿ ਜੀਵਦੜੋ ਮੁਇਓਹਿ ॥

फरीदा पिछल राति न जागिओहि जीवदड़ो मुइओहि ॥

Phareedaa pichhal raati na jaagiohi jeevada(rr)o muiohi ||

Fareed, if you do not awaken in the early hours before dawn, you are dead while yet alive.

ਜੇ ਤੈ ਰਬੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਤ ਰਬਿ ਨ ਵਿਸਰਿਓਹਿ ॥੧੦੭॥

जे तै रबु विसारिआ त रबि न विसरिओहि ॥१०७॥

Je tai rabu visaariaa ta rabi na visariohi ||107||

Although you have forgotten God, God has not forgotten you. ||107||


ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਫੁਲੜਾ ਫਲੁ ਭੀ ਪਛਾ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

पहिलै पहरै फुलड़ा फलु भी पछा राति ॥

Pahilai paharai phula(rr)aa phalu bhee pachhaa raati ||

The first watch of the night brings flowers, and the later watches of the night bring fruit.

ਜੋ ਜਾਗੰਨੑਿ ਲਹੰਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਾਈ ਕੰਨੋ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੧੧੨॥

जो जागंन्हि लहंनि से साई कंनो दाति ॥११२॥

Jo jaagannhi lahanni se saaee kanno daati ||112||

Those who remain awake and aware, receive the gifts from the Lord. ||112||


ਦਾਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੰਦੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

दाती साहिब संदीआ किआ चलै तिसु नालि ॥

Daatee saahib sanddeeaa kiaa chalai tisu naali ||

The gifts are from our Lord and Master; who can force Him to bestow them?

ਇਕਿ ਜਾਗੰਦੇ ਨਾ ਲਹਨੑਿ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਦੇਇ ਉਠਾਲਿ ॥੧੧੩॥

इकि जागंदे ना लहन्हि इकन्हा सुतिआ देइ उठालि ॥११३॥

Iki jaagandde naa lahanhi ikanhaa sutiaa dei uthaali ||113||

Some are awake, and do not receive them, while He awakens others from sleep to bless them. ||113||


ਢੂਢੇਦੀਏ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਕੂ ਤਉ ਤਨਿ ਕਾਈ ਕੋਰ ॥

ढूढेदीए सुहाग कू तउ तनि काई कोर ॥

Dhoodhedeee suhaag koo tau tani kaaee kor ||

You search for your Husband Lord; you must have some fault in your body.

ਜਿਨੑਾ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਝਾਕ ਨ ਹੋਰ ॥੧੧੪॥

जिन्हा नाउ सुहागणी तिन्हा झाक न होर ॥११४॥

Jinhaa naau suhaaga(nn)ee tinhaa jhaak na hor ||114||

Those who are known as happy soul-brides, do not look to others. ||114||


ਸਬਰ ਮੰਝ ਕਮਾਣ ਏ ਸਬਰੁ ਕਾ ਨੀਹਣੋ ॥

सबर मंझ कमाण ए सबरु का नीहणो ॥

Sabar manjjh kamaa(nn) e sabaru kaa neeha(nn)o ||

Within yourself, make patience the bow, and make patience the bowstring.

ਸਬਰ ਸੰਦਾ ਬਾਣੁ ਖਾਲਕੁ ਖਤਾ ਨ ਕਰੀ ॥੧੧੫॥

सबर संदा बाणु खालकु खता न करी ॥११५॥

Sabar sanddaa baa(nn)u khaalaku khataa na karee ||115||

Make patience the arrow, the Creator will not let you miss the target. ||115||


ਸਬਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਬਰੀ ਤਨੁ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਲੇਨੑਿ ॥

सबर अंदरि साबरी तनु एवै जालेन्हि ॥

Sabar anddari saabaree tanu evai jaalenhi ||

Those who are patient abide in patience; in this way, they burn their bodies.

ਹੋਨਿ ਨਜੀਕਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਦੈ ਭੇਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੇਨਿ ॥੧੧੬॥

होनि नजीकि खुदाइ दै भेतु न किसै देनि ॥११६॥

Honi najeeki khudaai dai bhetu na kisai deni ||116||

They are close to the Lord, but they do not reveal their secret to anyone. ||116||


ਸਬਰੁ ਏਹੁ ਸੁਆਉ ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਬੰਦਾ ਦਿੜੁ ਕਰਹਿ ॥

सबरु एहु सुआउ जे तूं बंदा दिड़ु करहि ॥

Sabaru ehu suaau je toonn banddaa di(rr)u karahi ||

Let patience be your purpose in life; implant this within your being.

ਵਧਿ ਥੀਵਹਿ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਟੁਟਿ ਨ ਥੀਵਹਿ ਵਾਹੜਾ ॥੧੧੭॥

वधि थीवहि दरीआउ टुटि न थीवहि वाहड़ा ॥११७॥

Vadhi theevahi dareeaau tuti na theevahi vaaha(rr)aa ||117||

In this way, you will grow into a great river; you will not break off into a tiny stream. ||117||


ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰਵੇਸੀ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥

फरीदा दरवेसी गाखड़ी चोपड़ी परीति ॥

Phareedaa daravesee gaakha(rr)ee chopa(rr)ee pareeti ||

Fareed, it is difficult to be a dervish - a Holy Saint; it is easier to love bread when it is buttered.

ਇਕਨਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਚਾਲੀਐ ਦਰਵੇਸਾਵੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧੧੮॥

इकनि किनै चालीऐ दरवेसावी रीति ॥११८॥

Ikani kinai chaaleeai daravesaavee reeti ||118||

Only a rare few follow the way of the Saints. ||118||


ਤਨੁ ਤਪੈ ਤਨੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਣੁ ਹਡ ਬਲੰਨੑਿ ॥

तनु तपै तनूर जिउ बालणु हड बलंन्हि ॥

Tanu tapai tanoor jiu baala(nn)u had balannhi ||

My body is cooking like an oven; my bones are burning like firewood.

ਪੈਰੀ ਥਕਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੁਲਾਂ ਜੇ ਮੂੰ ਪਿਰੀ ਮਿਲੰਨੑਿ ॥੧੧੯॥

पैरी थकां सिरि जुलां जे मूं पिरी मिलंन्हि ॥११९॥

Pairee thakaan siri julaan je moonn piree milannhi ||119||

If my feet become tired, I will walk on my head, if I can meet my Beloved. ||119||


ਤਨੁ ਨ ਤਪਾਇ ਤਨੂਰ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲਣੁ ਹਡ ਨ ਬਾਲਿ ॥

तनु न तपाइ तनूर जिउ बालणु हड न बालि ॥

Tanu na tapaai tanoor jiu baala(nn)u had na baali ||

Do not heat up your body like an oven, and do not burn your bones like firewood.

ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਫੇੜਿਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਿਰੀ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥੧੨੦॥

सिरि पैरी किआ फेड़िआ अंदरि पिरी निहालि ॥१२०॥

Siri pairee kiaa phe(rr)iaa anddari piree nihaali ||120||

What harm have your feet and head done to you? Behold your Beloved within yourself. ||120||


ਹਉ ਢੂਢੇਦੀ ਸਜਣਾ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈਡੇ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

हउ ढूढेदी सजणा सजणु मैडे नालि ॥

Hau dhoodhedee saja(nn)aa saja(nn)u maide naali ||

I search for my Friend, but my Friend is already with me.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਇ ਦਿਖਾਲਿ ॥੧੨੧॥

नानक अलखु न लखीऐ गुरमुखि देइ दिखालि ॥१२१॥

Naanak alakhu na lakheeai guramukhi dei dikhaali ||121||

O Nanak, the Unseen Lord cannot be seen; He is revealed only to the Gurmukh. ||121||


ਹੰਸਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਤਰੰਦਿਆ ਬਗਾ ਆਇਆ ਚਾਉ ॥

हंसा देखि तरंदिआ बगा आइआ चाउ ॥

Hanssaa dekhi taranddiaa bagaa aaiaa chaau ||

Seeing the swans swimming, the cranes became excited.

ਡੁਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਗ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਸਿਰੁ ਤਲਿ ਉਪਰਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧੨੨॥

डुबि मुए बग बपुड़े सिरु तलि उपरि पाउ ॥१२२॥

Dubi mue bag bapu(rr)e siru tali upari paau ||122||

The poor cranes were drowned to death, with their heads below the water and their feet sticking out above. ||122||


ਮੈ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਵਡ ਹੰਸੁ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥

मै जाणिआ वड हंसु है तां मै कीता संगु ॥

Mai jaa(nn)iaa vad hanssu hai taan mai keetaa sanggu ||

I knew him as a great swan, so I associated with him.

ਜੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਬਗੁ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਭੇੜੀ ਅੰਗੁ ॥੧੨੩॥

जे जाणा बगु बपुड़ा जनमि न भेड़ी अंगु ॥१२३॥

Je jaa(nn)aa bagu bapu(rr)aa janami na bhe(rr)ee anggu ||123||

If I had known that he was a only wretched crane, I would never in my life have crossed paths with him. ||123||


ਕਿਆ ਹੰਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਧਰੇ ॥

किआ हंसु किआ बगुला जा कउ नदरि धरे ॥

Kiaa hanssu kiaa bagulaa jaa kau nadari dhare ||

Who is a swan, and who is a crane, if God blesses him with His Glance of Grace?

ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਾਗਹੁ ਹੰਸੁ ਕਰੇ ॥੧੨੪॥

जे तिसु भावै नानका कागहु हंसु करे ॥१२४॥

Je tisu bhaavai naanakaa kaagahu hanssu kare ||124||

If it pleases Him, O Nanak, He changes a crow into a swan. ||124||


ਸਰਵਰ ਪੰਖੀ ਹੇਕੜੋ ਫਾਹੀਵਾਲ ਪਚਾਸ ॥

सरवर पंखी हेकड़ो फाहीवाल पचास ॥

Saravar pankkhee heka(rr)o phaaheevaal pachaas ||

There is only one bird in the lake, but there are fifty trappers.

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਲਹਰੀ ਗਡੁ ਥਿਆ ਸਚੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਸ ॥੧੨੫॥

इहु तनु लहरी गडु थिआ सचे तेरी आस ॥१२५॥

Ihu tanu laharee gadu thiaa sache teree aas ||125||

This body is caught in the waves of desire. O my True Lord, You are my only hope! ||125||


ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਮਣੀਆ ਮੰਤੁ ॥

कवणु सु अखरु कवणु गुणु कवणु सु मणीआ मंतु ॥

What is that word, what is that virtue, and what is that magic mantra?

ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਸੋ ਹਉ ਕਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਸਿ ਆਵੈ ਕੰਤੁ ॥੧੨੬॥

कवणु सु वेसो हउ करी जितु वसि आवै कंतु ॥१२६॥

Kava(nn)u su veso hau karee jitu vasi aavai kanttu ||126||

What are those clothes, which I can wear to captivate my Husband Lord? ||126||


ਨਿਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਖਵਣੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਮਣੀਆ ਮੰਤੁ ॥

निवणु सु अखरु खवणु गुणु जिहबा मणीआ मंतु ॥

Niva(nn)u su akharu khava(nn)u gu(nn)u jihabaa ma(nn)eeaa manttu ||

Humility is the word, forgiveness is the virtue, and sweet speech is the magic mantra.

ਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਭੈਣੇ ਵੇਸ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਂ ਵਸਿ ਆਵੀ ਕੰਤੁ ॥੧੨੭॥

ए त्रै भैणे वेस करि तां वसि आवी कंतु ॥१२७॥

E trai bhai(nn)e ves kari taan vasi aavee kanttu ||127||

Wear these three robes, O sister, and you will captivate your Husband Lord. ||127||


ਮਤਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਹੋਇ ਇਆਣਾ ॥

मति होदी होइ इआणा ॥

Mati hodee hoi iaa(nn)aa ||

If you are wise, be simple;

ਤਾਣ ਹੋਦੇ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਤਾਣਾ ॥

ताण होदे होइ निताणा ॥

Taa(nn) hode hoi nitaa(nn)aa ||

If you are powerful, be weak;

ਅਣਹੋਦੇ ਆਪੁ ਵੰਡਾਏ ॥

अणहोदे आपु वंडाए ॥

A(nn)ahode aapu vanddaae ||

And when there is nothing to share, then share with others.

ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਸਦਾਏ ॥੧੨੮॥

को ऐसा भगतु सदाए ॥१२८॥

Ko aisaa bhagatu sadaae ||128||

How rare is one who is known as such a devotee. ||128||


ਇਕੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਨ ਗਾਲਾਇ ਸਭਨਾ ਮੈ ਸਚਾ ਧਣੀ ॥

इकु फिका न गालाइ सभना मै सचा धणी ॥

Iku phikaa na gaalaai sabhanaa mai sachaa dha(nn)ee ||

Do not utter even a single harsh word; your True Lord and Master abides in all.

ਹਿਆਉ ਨ ਕੈਹੀ ਠਾਹਿ ਮਾਣਕ ਸਭ ਅਮੋਲਵੇ ॥੧੨੯॥

हिआउ न कैही ठाहि माणक सभ अमोलवे ॥१२९॥

Hiaau na kaihee thaahi maa(nn)ak sabh amolave ||129||

Do not break anyone's heart; these are all priceless jewels. ||129||


ਸਭਨਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਠਾਹਣੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਮਚਾਂਗਵਾ ॥

सभना मन माणिक ठाहणु मूलि मचांगवा ॥

Sabhanaa man maa(nn)ik thaaha(nn)u mooli machaangavaa ||

The minds of all are like precious jewels; to harm them is not good at all.

ਜੇ ਤਉ ਪਿਰੀਆ ਦੀ ਸਿਕ ਹਿਆਉ ਨ ਠਾਹੇ ਕਹੀ ਦਾ ॥੧੩੦॥

जे तउ पिरीआ दी सिक हिआउ न ठाहे कही दा ॥१३०॥

Je tau pireeaa dee sik hiaau na thaahe kahee daa ||130||

If you desire your Beloved, then do not break anyone's heart. ||130||
