Swaiyas In Praise Of The First Mehl:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

Īk-õamkkaari saŧigur prsaađi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਬਰਦਾਤਾ ॥

इक मनि पुरखु धिआइ बरदाता ॥

Īk mani purakhu đhiâaī barađaaŧaa ||

Meditate single-mindedly on the Primal Lord God, the Bestower of blessings.

ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਖਿਆਤਾ ॥

संत सहारु सदा बिखिआता ॥

Sanŧŧ sahaaru sađaa bikhiâaŧaa ||

He is the Helper and Support of the Saints, manifest forever.

ਤਾਸੁ ਚਰਨ ਲੇ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸਾਵਉ ॥

तासु चरन ले रिदै बसावउ ॥

Ŧaasu charan le riđai basaavaū ||

Grasp His Feet and enshrine them in your heart.

ਤਉ ਪਰਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਉ ॥੧॥

तउ परम गुरू नानक गुन गावउ ॥१॥

Ŧaū param guroo naanak gun gaavaū ||1||

Then, let us sing the Glorious Praises of the most exalted Guru Nanak. ||1||


ਗਾਵਉ ਗੁਨ ਪਰਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਦੁਰਤ ਨਿਵਾਰਣ ਸਬਦ ਸਰੇ ॥

गावउ गुन परम गुरू सुख सागर दुरत निवारण सबद सरे ॥

Gaavaū gun param guroo sukh saagar đuraŧ nivaarañ sabađ sare ||

I sing the Glorious Praises of the most exalted Guru Nanak, the Ocean of peace, the Eradicator of sins, the sacred pool of the Shabad, the Word of God.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਧੀਰ ਮਤਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰੇ ॥

गावहि ग्मभीर धीर मति सागर जोगी जंगम धिआनु धरे ॥

Gaavahi gambbheer đheer maŧi saagar jogee janggam đhiâanu đhare ||

The beings of deep and profound understanding, oceans of wisdom, sing of Him; the Yogis and wandering hermits meditate on Him.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਦਿ ਭਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦਿਕ ਆਤਮ ਰਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਣਿਓ ॥

गावहि इंद्रादि भगत प्रहिलादिक आतम रसु जिनि जाणिओ ॥

Gaavahi īanđđraađi bhagaŧ prhilaađik âaŧam rasu jini jaañiõ ||

Indra and devotees like Prahlaad, who know the joy of the soul, sing of Him.

ਕਬਿ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਉ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਣਿਓ ॥੨॥

कबि कल सुजसु गावउ गुर नानक राजु जोगु जिनि माणिओ ॥२॥

Kabi kal sujasu gaavaū gur naanak raaju jogu jini maañiõ ||2||

KAL the poet sings the Sublime Praises of Guru Nanak, who enjoys mastery of Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success. ||2||


ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਕਾਦਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜੋਗੇਸੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ॥

गावहि जनकादि जुगति जोगेसुर हरि रस पूरन सरब कला ॥

Gaavahi janakaađi jugaŧi jogesur hari ras pooran sarab kalaa ||

King Janak and the great Yogic heroes of the Lord's Way, sing the Praises of the All-powerful Primal Being, filled with the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਨਕਾਦਿ ਸਾਧ ਸਿਧਾਦਿਕ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਅਛਲ ਛਲਾ ॥

गावहि सनकादि साध सिधादिक मुनि जन गावहि अछल छला ॥

Gaavahi sanakaađi saađh siđhaađik muni jan gaavahi âchhal chhalaa ||

Sanak and Brahma's sons, the Saadhus and Siddhas, the silent sages and humble servants of the Lord sing the Praises of Guru Nanak, who cannot be deceived by the great deceiver.

ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਧੋਮੁ ਅਟਲ ਮੰਡਲਵੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਰਸੁ ਜਾਣਿਓ ॥

गावै गुण धोमु अटल मंडलवै भगति भाइ रसु जाणिओ ॥

Gaavai guñ đhomu âtal manddalavai bhagaŧi bhaaī rasu jaañiõ ||

Dhoma the seer and Dhroo, whose realm is unmoving, sing the Glorious Praises of Guru Nanak, who knows the ecstasy of loving devotional worship.

ਕਬਿ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਉ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਣਿਓ ॥੩॥

कबि कल सुजसु गावउ गुर नानक राजु जोगु जिनि माणिओ ॥३॥

गावहि कपिलादि आदि जोगेसुर अपर्मपर अवतार वरो ॥

Gaavahi kapilaađi âađi jogesur âparamppar âvaŧaar varo ||

Kapila and the other Yogis sing of Guru Nanak. He is the Avataar, the Incarnation of the Infinite Lord.

ਗਾਵੈ ਜਮਦਗਨਿ ਪਰਸਰਾਮੇਸੁਰ ਕਰ ਕੁਠਾਰੁ ਰਘੁ ਤੇਜੁ ਹਰਿਓ ॥

गावै जमदगनि परसरामेसुर कर कुठारु रघु तेजु हरिओ ॥

Gaavai jamađagani parasaraamesur kar kuthaaru raghu ŧeju hariõ ||

Parasraam the son of Jamdagan, whose axe and powers were taken away by Raghuvira, sing of Him.

ਉਧੌ ਅਕ੍ਰੂਰੁ ਬਿਦਰੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਰਬਾਤਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਣਿਓ ॥

उधौ अक्रूरु बिदरु गुण गावै सरबातमु जिनि जाणिओ ॥

Ūđhau âkrooru biđaru guñ gaavai sarabaaŧamu jini jaañiõ ||

Udho, Akrur and Bidur sing the Glorious Praises of Guru Nanak, who knows the Lord, the Soul of All.

ਕਬਿ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਉ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਣਿਓ ॥੪॥

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਬਰਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਖਟ ਦਰਸਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਸਿਮਰੰਥਿ ਗੁਨਾ ॥

गावहि गुण बरन चारि खट दरसन ब्रहमादिक सिमरंथि गुना ॥

Gaavahi guñ baran chaari khat đarasan brhamaađik simaranŧŧhi gunaa ||

The four castes and the six Shaastras sing His Glorious Praises; Brahma and the others contemplate His Virtues.

ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਸੇਸੁ ਸਹਸ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਰਸ ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਿ ਧੁਨਾ ॥

गावै गुण सेसु सहस जिहबा रस आदि अंति लिव लागि धुना ॥

Gaavai guñ sesu sahas jihabaa ras âađi ânŧŧi liv laagi đhunaa ||

The thousand-tongued serpent king sings His Praises with delight, remaining lovingly attached to Him.

ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਾਦੇਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਓ ॥

गावै गुण महादेउ बैरागी जिनि धिआन निरंतरि जाणिओ ॥

Gaavai guñ mahaađeū bairaagee jini đhiâan niranŧŧari jaañiõ ||

Shiva, detached and beyond desire, sings the Glorious Praises of Guru Nanak, who knows the Lord's endless meditation.

ਕਬਿ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਉ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਣਿਓ ॥੫॥

कबि कल सुजसु गावउ गुर नानक राजु जोगु जिनि माणिओ ॥५॥

ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਮਾਣਿਓ ਬਸਿਓ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਰਿਦੰਤਰਿ ॥

राजु जोगु माणिओ बसिओ निरवैरु रिदंतरि ॥

Raaju jogu maañiõ basiõ niravairu riđanŧŧari ||

He mastered Raja Yoga, and enjoys sovereignty over both worlds; the Lord, beyond hate and revenge, is enshrined within His Heart.

ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਗਲ ਉਧਰੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਲੇ ਤਰਿਓ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ॥

स्रिसटि सगल उधरी नामि ले तरिओ निरंतरि ॥

Srisati sagal ūđharee naami le ŧariõ niranŧŧari ||

The whole world is saved, and carried across, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਨਕਾਦਿ ਆਦਿ ਜਨਕਾਦਿ ਜੁਗਹ ਲਗਿ ॥

गुण गावहि सनकादि आदि जनकादि जुगह लगि ॥

Guñ gaavahi sanakaađi âađi janakaađi jugah lagi ||

Sanak and Janak and the others sing His Praises, age after age.

ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਧੰਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਕਯਥੁ ਭਲੌ ਜਗਿ ॥

धंनि धंनि गुरु धंनि जनमु सकयथु भलौ जगि ॥

Đhanni đhanni guru đhanni janamu sakayaŧhu bhalau jagi ||

Blessed, blessed, blessed and fruitful is the sublime birth of the Guru into the world.

ਪਾਤਾਲ ਪੁਰੀ ਜੈਕਾਰ ਧੁਨਿ ਕਬਿ ਜਨ ਕਲ ਵਖਾਣਿਓ ॥

पाताल पुरी जैकार धुनि कबि जन कल वखाणिओ ॥

Paaŧaal puree jaikaar đhuni kabi jan kal vakhaañiõ ||

Even in the nether regions, His Victory is celebrated; so says KAL the poet.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਸਿਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਤੈ ਮਾਣਿਓ ॥੬॥

हरि नाम रसिक नानक गुर राजु जोगु तै माणिओ ॥६॥

Hari naam rasik naanak gur raaju jogu ŧai maañiõ ||6||

You are blessed with the Nectar of the Lord's Name, O Guru Nanak; You have mastered Raja Yoga, and enjoy sovereignty over both worlds. ||6||


ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਤੈ ਮਾਣਿਓ ਛਲਿਓ ਬਲਿ ਬਾਵਨ ਭਾਇਓ ॥

सतजुगि तै माणिओ छलिओ बलि बावन भाइओ ॥

Saŧajugi ŧai maañiõ chhaliõ bali baavan bhaaīõ ||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, You were pleased to deceive Baal the king, in the form of a dwarf.

ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਤੈ ਮਾਣਿਓ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਘੁਵੰਸੁ ਕਹਾਇਓ ॥

त्रेतै तै माणिओ रामु रघुवंसु कहाइओ ॥

Ŧreŧai ŧai maañiõ raamu raghuvanssu kahaaīõ ||

In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yuga, You were called Raam of the Raghu dynasty.

ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਕੰਸੁ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ਕੀਓ ॥

दुआपुरि क्रिसन मुरारि कंसु किरतारथु कीओ ॥

Đuâapuri krisan muraari kanssu kiraŧaaraŧhu keeõ ||

In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, You were Krishna; You killed Mur the demon and saved Kans.

ਉਗ੍ਰਸੈਣ ਕਉ ਰਾਜੁ ਅਭੈ ਭਗਤਹ ਜਨ ਦੀਓ ॥

उग्रसैण कउ राजु अभै भगतह जन दीओ ॥

Ūgrsaiñ kaū raaju âbhai bhagaŧah jan đeeõ ||

You blessed Ugrasain with a kingdom, and You blessed Your humble devotees with fearlessness.

ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਗਦੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਕਹਾਇਓ ॥

कलिजुगि प्रमाणु नानक गुरु अंगदु अमरु कहाइओ ॥

Kalijugi prmaañu naanak guru ânggađu âmaru kahaaīõ ||

In the Iron Age, the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, You are known and accepted as Guru Nanak, Guru Angad and Guru Amar Das.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਜੁ ਅਬਿਚਲੁ ਅਟਲੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਓ ॥੭॥

स्री गुरू राजु अबिचलु अटलु आदि पुरखि फुरमाइओ ॥७॥

Sree guroo raaju âbichalu âtalu âađi purakhi phuramaaīõ ||7||

The sovereign rule of the Great Guru is unchanging and permanent, according the Command of the Primal Lord God. ||7||


ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਵਿਦਾਸੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜੈਦੇਵ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨ ॥

गुण गावै रविदासु भगतु जैदेव त्रिलोचन ॥

Guñ gaavai raviđaasu bhagaŧu jaiđev ŧrilochan ||

His Glorious Praises are sung by the devotees Ravi Daas, Jai Dayv and Trilochan.

ਨਾਮਾ ਭਗਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਮ ਲੋਚਨ ॥

नामा भगतु कबीरु सदा गावहि सम लोचन ॥

Naamaa bhagaŧu kabeeru sađaa gaavahi sam lochan ||

The devotees Naam Dayv and Kabeer praise Him continually, knowing Him to be even-eyed.

ਭਗਤੁ ਬੇਣਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਆਤਮ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੈ ॥

भगतु बेणि गुण रवै सहजि आतम रंगु माणै ॥

Bhagaŧu beñi guñ ravai sahaji âaŧam ranggu maañai ||

The devotee Baynee sings His Praises; He intuitively enjoys the ecstasy of the soul.

ਜੋਗ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

जोग धिआनि गुर गिआनि बिना प्रभ अवरु न जाणै ॥

Jog đhiâani gur giâani binaa prbh âvaru na jaañai ||

He is the Master of Yoga and meditation, and the spiritual wisdom of the Guru; He knows none other except God.

ਸੁਖਦੇਉ ਪਰੀਖੵਤੁ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਗੋਤਮ ਰਿਖਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਓ ॥

सुखदेउ परीख्यतु गुण रवै गोतम रिखि जसु गाइओ ॥

Sukhađeū pareekhʸŧu guñ ravai goŧam rikhi jasu gaaīõ ||

Sukh Dayv and Preekhyat sing His Praises, and Gautam the rishi sings His Praise.

ਕਬਿ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਨਿਤ ਨਵਤਨੁ ਜਗਿ ਛਾਇਓ ॥੮॥

कबि कल सुजसु नानक गुर नित नवतनु जगि छाइओ ॥८॥

Kabi kal sujasu naanak gur niŧ navaŧanu jagi chhaaīõ ||8||

Says KAL the poet, the ever-fresh praises of Guru Nanak are spread throughout the world. ||8||


ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਪਾਯਾਲਿ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਗਾਦਿ ਭੁਯੰਗਮ ॥

गुण गावहि पायालि भगत नागादि भुयंगम ॥

Guñ gaavahi paayaali bhagaŧ naagaađi bhuyanggam ||

In the nether worlds, His Praises are sung by the devotees like Shaysh-naag in serpent form.

ਮਹਾਦੇਉ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤਿ ਜੰਗਮ ॥

महादेउ गुण रवै सदा जोगी जति जंगम ॥

Mahaađeū guñ ravai sađaa jogee jaŧi janggam ||

Shiva, the Yogis and the wandering hermits sing His Praises forever.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਮੁਨਿ ਬੵਾਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਬੇਦ ਬੵਾਕਰਣ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਅ ॥

गुण गावै मुनि ब्यासु जिनि बेद ब्याकरण बीचारिअ ॥

Guñ gaavai muni bʸaasu jini beđ bʸaakarañ beechaariâ ||

Vyaas the silent sage, who studied the Vedas and its grammar, sings His Praise.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਅ ॥

ब्रहमा गुण उचरै जिनि हुकमि सभ स्रिसटि सवारीअ ॥

Brhamaa guñ ūcharai jini hukami sabh srisati savaareeâ ||

His Praises are sung by Brahma, who created the entire universe by God's Command.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਖੰਡ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਸਮ ਜਾਣਿਓ ॥

ब्रहमंड खंड पूरन ब्रहमु गुण निरगुण सम जाणिओ ॥

Brhamandd khandd pooran brhamu guñ niraguñ sam jaañiõ ||

God fills the galaxies and realms of the universe; He is known to be the same, manifest and unmanifest.

ਜਪੁ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਹਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਾਣਿਓ ॥੯॥

जपु कल सुजसु नानक गुर सहजु जोगु जिनि माणिओ ॥९॥

Japu kal sujasu naanak gur sahaju jogu jini maañiõ ||9||

KAL chants the Sublime Praises of Guru Nanak, who enjoys mastery of Yoga. ||9||


ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਨਵ ਨਾਥ ਧੰਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਓ ॥

गुण गावहि नव नाथ धंनि गुरु साचि समाइओ ॥

Guñ gaavahi nav naaŧh đhanni guru saachi samaaīõ ||

The nine masters of Yoga sing His Praises; blessed is the Guru, who is merged into the True Lord.

ਮਾਂਧਾਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਰਵੈ ਜੇਨ ਚਕ੍ਰਵੈ ਕਹਾਇਓ ॥

मांधाता गुण रवै जेन चक्रवै कहाइओ ॥

Maanđhaaŧaa guñ ravai jen chakrvai kahaaīõ ||

Maandhaataa, who called himself ruler of all the world, sings His Praises.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਉ ਸਪਤ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ਬਸੰਤੌ ॥

गुण गावै बलि राउ सपत पातालि बसंतौ ॥

Guñ gaavai bali raaū sapaŧ paaŧaali basanŧŧau ||

Bal the king, dwelling in the seventh underworld, sings His Praises.

ਭਰਥਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹੰਤੌ ॥

भरथरि गुण उचरै सदा गुर संगि रहंतौ ॥

Bharaŧhari guñ ūcharai sađaa gur sanggi rahanŧŧau ||

Bhart'har, abiding forever with Gorakh, his guru, sings His Praises.

ਦੂਰਬਾ ਪਰੂਰਉ ਅੰਗਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਓ ॥

दूरबा परूरउ अंगरै गुर नानक जसु गाइओ ॥

Đoorabaa parooraū ânggarai gur naanak jasu gaaīõ ||

Doorbaasaa, King Puro and Angra sing the Praises of Guru Nanak.

ਕਬਿ ਕਲ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਓ ॥੧੦॥
