ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥

पुत्र कलत्रु मोहु हेतु है सभु दुखु सबाइआ ॥

Putr kalatru mohu hetu hai sabhu dukhu sabaaiaa ||

Love and attachment to children and spouse is total misery and pain.

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਭਰਮਹਿ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥

जम दरि बधे मारीअहि भरमहि भरमाइआ ॥

Jam dari badhe maareeahi bharamahi bharamaaiaa ||

He is gagged and bound at the door of the Messenger of Death; he dies, and wanders lost in reincarnation.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

मनमुखि जनमु गवाइआ नानक हरि भाइआ ॥३॥

Manamukhi janamu gavaaiaa naanak hari bhaaiaa ||3||

The self-willed manmukh wastes his life; Nanak loves the Lord. ||3||

ਜਿਨ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤੇ ਰਤੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

जिन वडिआई तेरे नाम की ते रते मन माहि ॥

Jin vadiaaee tere naam kee te rate man maahi ||

Those who are blessed with the glorious greatness of Your Name - their minds are imbued with Your Love.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

नानक अम्रितु एकु है दूजा अम्रितु नाहि ॥

Naanak ammmritu eku hai doojaa ammmritu naahi ||

O Nanak, there is only One Ambrosial Nectar; there is no other nectar at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

नानक अम्रितु मनै माहि पाईऐ गुर परसादि ॥

Naanak ammmritu manai maahi paaeeai gur parasaadi ||

O Nanak, the Ambrosial Nectar is obtained within the mind, by Guru's Grace.

ਤਿਨੑੀ ਪੀਤਾ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਜਿਨੑ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਦਿ ॥੧॥

तिन्ही पीता रंग सिउ जिन्ह कउ लिखिआ आदि ॥१॥

Tinhee peetaa rangg siu jinh kau likhiaa aadi ||1||

They alone drink it in with love, who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

Mahalaa 2 ||

Second Mehl:

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਇ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ॥

कीता किआ सालाहीऐ करे सोइ सालाहि ॥

Keetaa kiaa saalaaheeai kare soi saalaahi ||

Why praise the created being? Praise the One who created all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

नानक एकी बाहरा दूजा दाता नाहि ॥

Naanak ekee baaharaa doojaa daataa naahi ||

O Nanak, there is no other Giver, except the One Lord.

ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

करता सो सालाहीऐ जिनि कीता आकारु ॥

Karataa so saalaaheeai jini keetaa aakaaru ||

Praise the Creator Lord, who created the creation.

ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿ ਸਭਸੈ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥

दाता सो सालाहीऐ जि सभसै दे आधारु ॥

Daataa so saalaaheeai ji sabhasai de aadhaaru ||

Praise the Great Giver, who gives sustenance to all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਭੰਡਾਰੁ ॥

नानक आपि सदीव है पूरा जिसु भंडारु ॥

Naanak aapi sadeev hai pooraa jisu bhanddaaru ||

O Nanak, the treasure of the Eternal Lord is over-flowing.

ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

वडा करि सालाहीऐ अंतु न पारावारु ॥२॥

Vadaa kari saalaaheeai anttu na paaraavaaru ||2||

Praise and honor the One, who has no end or limitation. ||2||

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥

हरि का नामु निधानु है सेविऐ सुखु पाई ॥

Hari kaa naamu nidhaanu hai seviai sukhu paaee ||

The Name of the Lord is a treasure. Serving it, peace is obtained.

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਉਚਰਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਂਈ ॥

नामु निरंजनु उचरां पति सिउ घरि जांई ॥

Naamu niranjjanu ucharaan pati siu ghari jaanee ||

I chant the Name of the Immaculate Lord, so that I may go home with honor.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਈ ॥

गुरमुखि बाणी नामु है नामु रिदै वसाई ॥

Guramukhi baa(nn)ee naamu hai naamu ridai vasaaee ||

The Word of the Gurmukh is the Naam; I enshrine the Naam within my heart.

ਮਤਿ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਵਸਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਧਿਆਈਂ ॥

मति पंखेरू वसि होइ सतिगुरू धिआईं ॥

Mati pankkheroo vasi hoi satiguroo dhiaaeen ||

The bird of the intellect comes under one's control, by meditating on the True Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੪॥

नानक आपि दइआलु होइ नामे लिव लाई ॥४॥

Naanak aapi daiaalu hoi naame liv laaee ||4||

O Nanak, if the Lord becomes merciful, the mortal lovingly tunes in to the Naam. ||4||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਕੈਸਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

तिसु सिउ कैसा बोलणा जि आपे जाणै जाणु ॥

Tisu siu kaisaa bola(nn)aa ji aape jaa(nn)ai jaa(nn)u ||

How can we speak of Him? Only He knows Himself.

ਚੀਰੀ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

चीरी जा की ना फिरै साहिबु सो परवाणु ॥

Cheeree jaa kee naa phirai saahibu so paravaa(nn)u ||

His decree cannot be challenged; He is our Supreme Lord and Master.

ਚੀਰੀ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਚਲਣਾ ਮੀਰ ਮਲਕ ਸਲਾਰ ॥

चीरी जिस की चलणा मीर मलक सलार ॥

Cheeree jis kee chala(nn)aa meer malak salaar ||

By His Decree, even kings, nobles and commanders must step down.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

जो तिसु भावै नानका साई भली कार ॥

Jo tisu bhaavai naanakaa saaee bhalee kaar ||

Whatever is pleasing to His Will, O Nanak, is a good deed.

ਜਿਨੑਾ ਚੀਰੀ ਚਲਣਾ ਹਥਿ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

जिन्हा चीरी चलणा हथि तिन्हा किछु नाहि ॥

Jinhaa cheeree chala(nn)aa hathi tinhaa kichhu naahi ||

By His Decree, we walk; nothing rests in our hands.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਉਠੀ ਕਰਲੈ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

साहिब का फुरमाणु होइ उठी करलै पाहि ॥

Saahib kaa phuramaa(nn)u hoi uthee karalai paahi ||

When the Order comes from our Lord and Master, all must rise up and take to the road.

ਜੇਹਾ ਚੀਰੀ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤੇਹਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

जेहा चीरी लिखिआ तेहा हुकमु कमाहि ॥

Jehaa cheeree likhiaa tehaa hukamu kamaahi ||

As His Decree is issued, so is His Command obeyed.

ਘਲੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਦੇ ਉਠੀ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

घले आवहि नानका सदे उठी जाहि ॥१॥

Ghale aavahi naanakaa sade uthee jaahi ||1||

Those who are sent, come, O Nanak; when they are called back, they depart and go. ||1||


ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥

Mahalaa 2 ||

Second Mehl:

ਸਿਫਤਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਬਖਸੀਐ ਸੇਈ ਪੋਤੇਦਾਰ ॥

सिफति जिना कउ बखसीऐ सेई पोतेदार ॥

Siphati jinaa kau bakhaseeai seee potedaar ||

Those whom the Lord blesses with His Praises, are the true keepers of the treasure.

ਕੁੰਜੀ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਦਿਤੀਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਿਲੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

कुंजी जिन कउ दितीआ तिन्हा मिले भंडार ॥

Kunjjee jin kau diteeaa tinhaa mile bhanddaar ||

Those who are blessed with the key - they alone receive the treasure.

ਜਹ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ਹੂ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ਤੇ ਕੀਅਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

जह भंडारी हू गुण निकलहि ते कीअहि परवाणु ॥

Jah bhanddaaree hoo gu(nn) nikalahi te keeahi paravaa(nn)u ||

That treasure, from which virtue wells up - that treasure is approved.

ਨਦਰਿ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

नदरि तिन्हा कउ नानका नामु जिन्हा नीसाणु ॥२॥

Nadari tinhaa kau naanakaa naamu jinhaa neesaa(nn)u ||2||

Those who are blessed by His Glance of Grace, O Nanak, bear the Insignia of the Naam. ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

नामु निरंजनु निरमला सुणिऐ सुखु होई ॥

Naamu niranjjanu niramalaa su(nn)iai sukhu hoee ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is immaculate and pure; hearing it, peace is obtained.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

सुणि सुणि मंनि वसाईऐ बूझै जनु कोई ॥

Su(nn)i su(nn)i manni vasaaeeai boojhai janu koee ||

Listening and hearing, It is enshrined in the mind; how rare is that humble being who realizes it.

ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

बहदिआ उठदिआ न विसरै साचा सचु सोई ॥

Bahadiaa uthadiaa na visarai saachaa sachu soee ||

Sitting down and standing up, I shall never forget Him, the Truest of the true.

ਭਗਤਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

भगता कउ नाम अधारु है नामे सुखु होई ॥

Bhagataa kau naam adhaaru hai naame sukhu hoee ||

His devotees have the Support of His Name; in His Name, they find peace.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੫॥

नानक मनि तनि रवि रहिआ गुरमुखि हरि सोई ॥५॥

Naanak mani tani ravi rahiaa guramukhi hari soee ||5||

O Nanak, He permeates and pervades mind and body; He is the Lord, the Guru's Word. ||5||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੁਲੀਅਹਿ ਤੋਲ ਜੇ ਜੀਉ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

नानक तुलीअहि तोल जे जीउ पिछै पाईऐ ॥

Naanak tuleeahi tol je jeeu pichhai paaeeai ||

O Nanak, the weight is weighed out, when the soul is placed on the scale.

ਇਕਸੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਹਿ ਬੋਲ ਜੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ॥

इकसु न पुजहि बोल जे पूरे पूरा करि मिलै ॥

Ikasu na pujahi bol je poore pooraa kari milai ||

Nothing is equal to speaking of the One, who perfectly unites us with the Perfect Lord.

ਵਡਾ ਆਖਣੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥

वडा आखणु भारा तोलु ॥

Vadaa aakha(nn)u bhaaraa tolu ||

To call Him glorious and great carries such a heavy weight.

ਹੋਰ ਹਉਲੀ ਮਤੀ ਹਉਲੇ ਬੋਲ ॥

होर हउली मती हउले बोल ॥

Hor haulee matee haule bol ||

Other intellectualism is lightweight; other words are lightweight as well.

ਧਰਤੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਰਬਤ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

धरती पाणी परबत भारु ॥

Dharatee paa(nn)ee parabat bhaaru ||

The weight of the earth, water and mountains

ਕਿਉ ਕੰਡੈ ਤੋਲੈ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੁ ॥

किउ कंडै तोलै सुनिआरु ॥

Kiu kanddai tolai suniaaru ||

how can the goldsmith weigh it in the scale ?

ਤੋਲਾ ਮਾਸਾ ਰਤਕ ਪਾਇ ॥

तोला मासा रतक पाइ ॥

Tolaa maasaa ratak paai ||

What weights can balance the scale?

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਦੇਇ ਪੁਜਾਇ ॥

नानक पुछिआ देइ पुजाइ ॥

Naanak puchhiaa dei pujaai ||

O Nanak, when questioned, the answer is given.

ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੀ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

मूरख अंधिआ अंधी धातु ॥

Moorakh anddhiaa anddhee dhaatu ||

The blind fool is running around, leading the blind.

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਨਿ ਆਪੁ ॥੧॥

कहि कहि कहणु कहाइनि आपु ॥१॥

Kahi kahi kaha(nn)u kahaaini aapu ||1||

The more they say, the more they expose themselves. ||1||


ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Mahalaa 1 ||

First Mehl:

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਆਖਿ ॥

आखणि अउखा सुनणि अउखा आखि न जापी आखि ॥

Aakha(nn)i aukhaa suna(nn)i aukhaa aakhi na jaapee aakhi ||

It is difficult to chant it; it is difficult to listen to it. It cannot be chanted with the mouth.

ਇਕਿ ਆਖਿ ਆਖਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖਹਿ ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

इकि आखि आखहि सबदु भाखहि अरध उरध दिनु राति ॥

Iki aakhi aakhahi sabadu bhaakhahi aradh uradh dinu raati ||

Some speak with their mouths and chant the Word of the Shabad - the low and the high, day and night.

ਜੇ ਕਿਹੁ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਕਿਹੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਿ ॥

जे किहु होइ त किहु दिसै जापै रूपु न जाति ॥

Je kihu hoi ta kihu disai jaapai roopu na jaati ||

If He were something, then He would be visible. His form and state cannot be seen.

ਸਭਿ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਘਟ ਅਉਘਟ ਘਟ ਥਾਪਿ ॥

सभि कारण करता करे घट अउघट घट थापि ॥

Sabhi kaara(nn) karataa kare ghat aughat ghat thaapi ||

The Creator Lord does all deeds; He is established in the hearts of the high and the low.

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਆਖਿ ॥੨॥

आखणि अउखा नानका आखि न जापै आखि ॥२॥

Aakha(nn)i aukhaa naanakaa aakhi na jaapai aakhi ||2||

It is so difficult to chant it, O Nanak; it cannot be chanted with the mouth. ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਸੀਐ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਆਈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ मनु रहसीऐ नामे सांति आई ॥

Naai su(nn)iai manu rahaseeai naame saanti aaee ||

Hearing the Name, the mind is delighted. The Name brings peace and tranquility.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀਐ ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ मनु त्रिपतीऐ सभ दुख गवाई ॥

Naai su(nn)iai manu tripateeai sabh dukh gavaaee ||

Hearing the Name, the mind is satisfied, and all pains are taken away.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਨਾਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ नाउ ऊपजै नामे वडिआई ॥

Naai su(nn)iai naau upajai naame vadiaaee ||

Hearing the Name, one becomes famous; the Name brings glorious greatness.

ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

नामे ही सभ जाति पति नामे गति पाई ॥

Naame hee sabh jaati pati naame gati paaee ||

The Name brings all honor and status; through the Name, salvation is obtained.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੬॥

गुरमुखि नामु धिआईऐ नानक लिव लाई ॥६॥

Guramukhi naamu dhiaaeeai naanak liv laaee ||6||

The Gurmukh meditates on the Name; Nanak is lovingly attuned to the Name. ||6||

ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਰਾਗੀਂ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਵੇਦੀਂ ॥

जूठि न रागीं जूठि न वेदीं ॥

Joothi na raageen joothi na vedeen ||

Impurity does not come from music; impurity does not come from the Vedas.

ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਚੰਦ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੀ ਭੇਦੀ ॥

जूठि न चंद सूरज की भेदी ॥

Joothi na chandd sooraj kee bhedee ||

Impurity does not come from the phases of the sun and the moon.

ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਅੰਨੀ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਨਾਈ ॥

जूठि न अंनी जूठि न नाई ॥

Joothi na annee joothi na naaee ||

Impurity does not come from food; impurity does not come from ritual cleansing baths.

ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਮੀਹੁ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਐ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ॥

जूठि न मीहु वर्हिऐ सभ थाई ॥

Joothi na meehu varhiai sabh thaaee ||

Impurity does not come from the rain, which falls everywhere.

ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਧਰਤੀ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

जूठि न धरती जूठि न पाणी ॥

Joothi na dharatee joothi na paa(nn)ee ||

Impurity does not come from the earth; impurity does not come from the water.

ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਪਉਣੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

जूठि न पउणै माहि समाणी ॥

Joothi na pau(nn)ai maahi samaa(nn)ee ||

Impurity does not come from the air which is diffused everywhere.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਗੁਰਿਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

नानक निगुरिआ गुणु नाही कोइ ॥

Naanak niguriaa gu(nn)u naahee koi ||

O Nanak, the one who has no Guru, has no redeeming virtues at all.

ਮੁਹਿ ਫੇਰਿਐ ਮੁਹੁ ਜੂਠਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

मुहि फेरिऐ मुहु जूठा होइ ॥१॥

Muhi pheriai muhu joothaa hoi ||1||

Impurity comes from turning one's face away from God. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਚੁਲੀਆ ਸੁਚੀਆ ਜੇ ਭਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

नानक चुलीआ सुचीआ जे भरि जाणै कोइ ॥

Naanak chuleeaa sucheeaa je bhari jaa(nn)ai koi ||

O Nanak, the mouth is truly cleansed by ritual cleansing, if you really know how to do it.

ਸੁਰਤੇ ਚੁਲੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਕੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਾ ਜਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

सुरते चुली गिआन की जोगी का जतु होइ ॥

Surate chulee giaan kee jogee kaa jatu hoi ||

For the intuitively aware, cleansing is spiritual wisdom. For the Yogi, it is self-control.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਚੁਲੀ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕੀ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਕਾ ਸਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

ब्रहमण चुली संतोख की गिरही का सतु दानु ॥

Brhama(nn) chulee santtokh kee girahee kaa satu daanu ||

For the Brahmin, cleansing is contentment; for the householder, it is truth and charity.

ਰਾਜੇ ਚੁਲੀ ਨਿਆਵ ਕੀ ਪੜਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

राजे चुली निआव की पड़िआ सचु धिआनु ॥

Raaje chulee niaav kee pa(rr)iaa sachu dhiaanu ||

For the king, cleansing is justice; for the scholar, it is true meditation.

ਪਾਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਧੋਪਈ ਮੁਖਿ ਪੀਤੈ ਤਿਖ ਜਾਇ ॥

पाणी चितु न धोपई मुखि पीतै तिख जाइ ॥

Paa(nn)ee chitu na dhopaee mukhi peetai tikh jaai ||

The consciousness is not washed with water; you drink it to quench your thirst.

ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਜਗਤ ਕਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਭੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥

पाणी पिता जगत का फिरि पाणी सभु खाइ ॥२॥

Paa(nn)ee pitaa jagat kaa phiri paa(nn)ee sabhu khaai ||2||

Water is the father of the world; in the end, water destroys it all. ||2||

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਭ ਸਿਧਿ ਹੈ ਰਿਧਿ ਪਿਛੈ ਆਵੈ ॥

Naai su(nn)iai sabh sidhi hai ridhi pichhai aavai ||

Hearing the Name, all supernatural spiritual powers are obtained, and wealth follows along.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ नउ निधि मिलै मन चिंदिआ पावै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai nau nidhi milai man chinddiaa paavai ||

Hearing the Name, the nine treasures are received, and the mind's desires are obtained.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਕਵਲਾ ਚਰਨ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ संतोखु होइ कवला चरन धिआवै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai santtokhu hoi kavalaa charan dhiaavai ||

Hearing the Name, contentment comes, and Maya meditates at one's feet.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ सहजु ऊपजै सहजे सुखु पावै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai sahaju upajai sahaje sukhu paavai ||

Hearing the Name, intuitive peace and poise wells up.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੭॥

गुरमती नाउ पाईऐ नानक गुण गावै ॥७॥

Guramatee naau paaeeai naanak gu(nn) gaavai ||7||

Through the Guru's Teachings, the Name is obtained; O Nanak, sing His Glorious Praises. ||7||

ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਦੁਖਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਰਤਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

दुख विचि जमणु दुखि मरणु दुखि वरतणु संसारि ॥

Dukh vichi jamma(nn)u dukhi mara(nn)u dukhi varata(nn)u sanssaari ||

In pain, we are born; in pain, we die. In pain, we deal with the world.

ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗੈ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

दुखु दुखु अगै आखीऐ पड़्हि पड़्हि करहि पुकार ॥

Dukhu dukhu agai aakheeai pa(rr)hi pa(rr)hi karahi pukaar ||

Hereafter, there is said to be pain, only pain; the more the mortals read, the more they cry out.

ਦੁਖ ਕੀਆ ਪੰਡਾ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੀਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਲਿਓ ਕੋਇ ॥

दुख कीआ पंडा खुल्हीआ सुखु न निकलिओ कोइ ॥

Dukh keeaa panddaa khulheeaa sukhu na nikalio koi ||

The packages of pain are untied, but peace does not emerge.

ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਾਇਆ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥

दुख विचि जीउ जलाइआ दुखीआ चलिआ रोइ ॥

Dukh vichi jeeu jalaaiaa dukheeaa chaliaa roi ||

In pain, the soul burns; in pain, it departs weeping and wailing.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥

नानक सिफती रतिआ मनु तनु हरिआ होइ ॥

Naanak siphatee ratiaa manu tanu hariaa hoi ||

O Nanak, imbued with the Lord's Praise, the mind and body blossom forth, rejuvenated.

ਦੁਖ ਕੀਆ ਅਗੀ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਭੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

दुख कीआ अगी मारीअहि भी दुखु दारू होइ ॥१॥

Dukh keeaa agee maareeahi bhee dukhu daaroo hoi ||1||

In the fire of pain, the mortals die; but pain is also the cure. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਸੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਭਸੂ ਹੂ ਭਸੁ ਖੇਹ ॥

नानक दुनीआ भसु रंगु भसू हू भसु खेह ॥

Naanak duneeaa bhasu ranggu bhasoo hoo bhasu kheh ||

O Nanak, worldly pleasures are nothing more than dust. They are the dust of the dust of ashes.

ਭਸੋ ਭਸੁ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਭੀ ਭਸੁ ਭਰੀਐ ਦੇਹ ॥

भसो भसु कमावणी भी भसु भरीऐ देह ॥

Bhaso bhasu kamaava(nn)ee bhee bhasu bhareeai deh ||

The mortal earns only the dust of the dust; his body is covered with dust.

ਜਾ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਕਢੀਐ ਭਸੂ ਭਰਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

जा जीउ विचहु कढीऐ भसू भरिआ जाइ ॥

Jaa jeeu vichahu kadheeai bhasoo bhariaa jaai ||

When the soul is taken out of the body, it too is covered with dust.

ਅਗੈ ਲੇਖੈ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਹੋਰ ਦਸੂਣੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

अगै लेखै मंगिऐ होर दसूणी पाइ ॥२॥

Agai lekhai manggiai hor dasoo(nn)ee paai ||2||

And when one's account is called for in the world hereafter, he receives only ten times more dust. ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ सुचि संजमो जमु नेड़ि न आवै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai suchi sanjjamo jamu ne(rr)i na aavai ||

Hearing the Name, one is blessed with purity and self-control, and the Messenger of Death will not draw near.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਆਨੑੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ घटि चानणा आन्हेरु गवावै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai ghati chaana(nn)aa aanheru gavaavai ||

Hearing the Name, the heart is illumined, and darkness is dispelled.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਆਪੁ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ आपु बुझीऐ लाहा नाउ पावै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai aapu bujheeai laahaa naau paavai ||

Hearing the Name, one comes to understand his own self, and the profit of the Name is obtained.

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਪਾਪ ਕਟੀਅਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

नाइ सुणिऐ पाप कटीअहि निरमल सचु पावै ॥

Naai su(nn)iai paap kateeahi niramal sachu paavai ||

Hearing the Name, sins are eradicated, and one meets the Immaculate True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਨਾਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥੮॥

नानक नाइ सुणिऐ मुख उजले नाउ गुरमुखि धिआवै ॥८॥

Naanak naai su(nn)iai mukh ujale naau guramukhi dhiaavai ||8||

O Nanak, hearing the Name, one's face becomes radiant. As Gurmukh, meditate on the Name. ||8||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਘਰਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਸਭਾ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

घरि नाराइणु सभा नालि ॥

Ghari naaraai(nn)u sabhaa naali ||

In your home, is the Lord God, along with all your other gods.

ਪੂਜ ਕਰੇ ਰਖੈ ਨਾਵਾਲਿ ॥

पूज करे रखै नावालि ॥

Pooj kare rakhai naavaali ||

You wash your stone gods and worship them.

ਕੁੰਗੂ ਚੰਨਣੁ ਫੁਲ ਚੜਾਏ ॥

कुंगू चंनणु फुल चड़ाए ॥

Kunggoo channa(nn)u phul cha(rr)aae ||

You offer saffron, sandalwood and flowers.

ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥

पैरी पै पै बहुतु मनाए ॥

Pairee pai pai bahutu manaae ||

Falling at their feet, you try so hard to appease them.

ਮਾਣੂਆ ਮੰਗਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਪੈਨੑੈ ਖਾਇ ॥

माणूआ मंगि मंगि पैन्है खाइ ॥

Maa(nn)ooaa manggi manggi painhai khaai ||

Begging, begging from other people, you get things to wear and eat.

ਅੰਧੀ ਕੰਮੀ ਅੰਧ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

अंधी कमी अंध सजाइ ॥

Anddhee kammee anddh sajaai ||

For your blind deeds, you will be blindly punished.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਮਰਦਿਆ ਰਖੈ ॥

भुखिआ देइ न मरदिआ रखै ॥

Bhukhiaa dei na maradiaa rakhai ||

Your idol does not feed the hungry, or save the dying.

ਅੰਧਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਅੰਧੀ ਸਥੈ ॥੧॥

अंधा झगड़ा अंधी सथै ॥१॥

Anddhaa jhaga(rr)aa anddhee sathai ||1||

The blind assembly argues in blindness. ||1||


ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਸਭੇ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਜੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਸਭੇ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥

Sabhe suratee jog sabhi sabhe bed puraa(nn) ||

All intuitive understanding, all Yoga, all the Vedas and Puraanas.

ਸਭੇ ਕਰਣੇ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਸਭੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਿਆਨ ॥

सभे करणे तप सभि सभे गीत गिआन ॥

Sabhe kara(nn)e tap sabhi sabhe geet giaan ||

All actions, all penances, all songs and spiritual wisdom.

ਸਭੇ ਬੁਧੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਸਭਿ ਸਭਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਸਭਿ ਥਾਨ ॥

सभे बुधी सुधि सभि सभि तीरथ सभि थान ॥

Sabhe budhee sudhi sabhi sabhi teerath sabhi thaan ||

All intellect, all enlightenment, all sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

ਸਭਿ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀਆ ਅਮਰ ਸਭਿ ਸਭਿ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਸਭਿ ਖਾਨ ॥

सभि पातिसाहीआ अमर सभि सभि खुसीआ सभि खान ॥

Sabhi paatisaaheeaa amar sabhi sabhi khuseeaa sabhi khaan ||

All kingdoms, all royal commands, all joys and all delicacies.

ਸਭੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਦੇਵ ਸਭਿ ਸਭੇ ਜੋਗ ਧਿਆਨ ॥

सभे माणस देव सभि सभे जोग धिआन ॥

Sabhe maa(nn)as dev sabhi sabhe jog dhiaan ||

All mankind, all divinities, all Yoga and meditation.

ਸਭੇ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਖੰਡ ਸਭਿ ਸਭੇ ਜੀਅ ਜਹਾਨ ॥

सभे पुरीआ खंड सभि सभे जीअ जहान ॥

Sabhe pureeaa khandd sabhi sabhe jeea jahaan ||

All worlds, all celestial realms; all the beings of the universe.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਆਪਣੈ ਕਰਮੀ ਵਹੈ ਕਲਾਮ ॥

हुकमि चलाए आपणै करमी वहै कलाम ॥

Hukami chalaae aapa(nn)ai karamee vahai kalaam ||

According to His Hukam, He commands them. His Pen writes out the account of their actions.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਸਭਾ ਦੀਬਾਨੁ ॥੨॥

नानक सचा सचि नाइ सचु सभा दीबानु ॥२॥

Naanak sachaa sachi naai sachu sabhaa deebaanu ||2||

O Nanak, True is the Lord, and True is His Name. True is His Congregation and His Court. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

Naai manniai sukhu upajai naame gati hoee ||

With faith in the Name, peace wells up; the Name brings emancipation.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ पति पाईऐ हिरदै हरि सोई ॥

Naai manniai pati paaeeai hiradai hari soee ||

With faith in the Name, honor is obtained. The Lord is enshrined in the heart.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਲੰਘੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ भवजलु लंघीऐ फिरि बिघनु न होई ॥

Naai manniai bhavajalu langgheeai phiri bighanu na hoee ||

With faith in the Name, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, and no obstructions are ever again encountered.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪੰਥੁ ਪਰਗਟਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਭ ਲੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ पंथु परगटा नामे सभ लोई ॥

Naai manniai pantthu paragataa naame sabh loee ||

With faith in the Name, the Path is revealed; through the Name, one is totally enlightened.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੯॥

नानक सतिगुरि मिलिऐ नाउ मंनीऐ जिन देवै सोई ॥९॥

Naanak satiguri miliai naau manneeai jin devai soee ||9||

O Nanak, meeting with the True Guru, one comes to have faith in the Name; he alone has faith, who is blessed with it. ||9||

ਪੁਰੀਆ ਖੰਡਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਇਕ ਪੈਰਿ ਧਿਆਏ ॥

पुरीआ खंडा सिरि करे इक पैरि धिआए ॥

Pureeaa khanddaa siri kare ik pairi dhiaae ||

The mortal walks on his head through the worlds and realms; he meditates, balanced on one foot.

ਪਉਣੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਜਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਸਿਰੁ ਮੁੰਡੀ ਤਲੈ ਦੇਇ ॥

पउणु मारि मनि जपु करे सिरु मुंडी तलै देइ ॥

Pau(nn)u maari mani japu kare siru munddee talai dei ||

Controlling the wind of the breath, he meditates within his mind, tucking his chin down into his chest.

ਕਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਓਹੁ ਟਿਕ ਟਿਕੈ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਜੋਰੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

किसु उपरि ओहु टिक टिकै किस नो जोरु करेइ ॥

Kisu upari ohu tik tikai kis no joru karei ||

What does he lean on? Where does he get his power?

ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਇ ॥

किस नो कहीऐ नानका किस नो करता देइ ॥

Kis no kaheeai naanakaa kis no karataa dei ||

What can be said, O Nanak? Who is blessed by the Creator?

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਹਾਏ ਆਪਣੈ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਣੇਇ ॥੧॥

हुकमि रहाए आपणै मूरखु आपु गणेइ ॥१॥

Hukami rahaae aapa(nn)ai moorakhu aapu ga(nn)ei ||1||

God keeps all under His Command, but the fool shows off himself. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਹੈ ਹੈ ਆਖਾਂ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟੀ ਹੂ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ॥

है है आखां कोटि कोटि कोटी हू कोटि कोटि ॥

Hai hai aakhaan koti koti kotee hoo koti koti ||

He is, He is - I say it millions upon millions, millions upon millions of times.

ਆਖੂੰ ਆਖਾਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੋਟਿ ॥

आखूं आखां सदा सदा कहणि न आवै तोटि ॥

Aakhoonn aakhaan sadaa sadaa kaha(nn)i na aavai toti ||

With my mouth I say it, forever and ever; there is no end to this speech.

ਨਾ ਹਉ ਥਕਾਂ ਨ ਠਾਕੀਆ ਏਵਡ ਰਖਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ॥

ना हउ थकां न ठाकीआ एवड रखहि जोति ॥

Naa hau thakaan na thaakeeaa evad rakhahi joti ||

I do not get tired, and I will not be stopped; this is how great my determination is.

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਸਿਅਹੁ ਚੁਖ ਬਿੰਦ ਉਪਰਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਦੋਸੁ ॥੨॥

नानक चसिअहु चुख बिंद उपरि आखणु दोसु ॥२॥

Naanak chasiahu chukh bindd upari aakha(nn)u dosu ||2||

O Nanak, this is tiny and insignificant. To say that it is more, is wrong. ||2||

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਕੁਲੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥

Naai manniai kulu udharai sabhu kutambbu sabaaiaa ||

With faith in the Name, all one's ancestors and family are saved.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਉਧਰੈ ਜਿਨ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ संगति उधरै जिन रिदै वसाइआ ॥

Naai manniai sanggati udharai jin ridai vasaaiaa ||

With faith in the Name, one's associates are saved; enshrine it within your heart.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਣਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇਆ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ सुणि उधरे जिन रसन रसाइआ ॥

Naai manniai su(nn)i udhare jin rasan rasaaiaa ||

With faith in the Name, those who hear it are saved; let your tongue delight in it.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਗਈ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ दुख भुख गई जिन नामि चितु लाइआ ॥

Naai manniai dukh bhukh gaee jin naami chitu laaiaa ||

With faith in the Name, pain and hunger are dispelled; let your consciousness be attached to the Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥

नानक नामु तिनी सालाहिआ जिन गुरू मिलाइआ ॥१०॥

Naanak naamu tinee saalaahiaa jin guroo milaaiaa ||10||

O Nanak, they alone Praise the Name, who meet with the Guru. ||10||

Sabhe raatee sabhi dih sabhi thitee sabhi vaar ||

All nights, all days, all dates, all days of the week;

ਸਭੇ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹ ਸਭਿ ਸਭਿ ਧਰਤੀਂ ਸਭਿ ਭਾਰ ॥

सभे रुती माह सभि सभि धरतीं सभि भार ॥

Sabhe rutee maah sabhi sabhi dharateen sabhi bhaar ||

All seasons, all months, all the earth and everything on it.

ਸਭੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਉਣ ਸਭਿ ਸਭਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥

सभे पाणी पउण सभि सभि अगनी पाताल ॥

Sabhe paa(nn)ee pau(nn) sabhi sabhi aganee paataal ||

All waters, all winds, all fires and underworlds.

ਸਭੇ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਖੰਡ ਸਭਿ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਅ ਲੋਅ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

सभे पुरीआ खंड सभि सभि लोअ लोअ आकार ॥

Sabhe pureeaa khandd sabhi sabhi loa loa aakaar ||

All solar systems and galaxies, all worlds, people and forms.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਕੇਤੜਾ ਕਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਜੈ ਕਾਰ ॥

हुकमु न जापी केतड़ा कहि न सकीजै कार ॥

Hukamu na jaapee keta(rr)aa kahi na sakeejai kaar ||

No one knows how great the Hukam of His Command is; no one can describe His actions.

ਆਖਹਿ ਥਕਹਿ ਆਖਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਫਤੀਂ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

आखहि थकहि आखि आखि करि सिफतीं वीचार ॥

Aakhahi thakahi aakhi aakhi kari siphateen veechaar ||

Mortals may utter, chant, recite and contemplate His Praises until they grow weary.

ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥

त्रिणु न पाइओ बपुड़ी नानकु कहै गवार ॥१॥

Tri(nn)u na paaio bapu(rr)ee naanaku kahai gavaar ||1||

The poor fools, O Nanak, cannot find even a tiny bit of the Lord. ||1||

ਅਖੀਂ ਪਰਣੈ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਾਂ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਸਭੁ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

अखीं परणै जे फिरां देखां सभु आकारु ॥

Akheen para(nn)ai je phiraan dekhaan sabhu aakaaru ||

If I were to walk around with my eyes wide open, gazing at all the created forms;

ਪੁਛਾ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਪੰਡਿਤਾਂ ਪੁਛਾ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥

पुछा गिआनी पंडितां पुछा बेद बीचार ॥

Puchhaa giaanee pandditaan puchhaa bed beechaar ||

I could ask the spiritual teachers and religious scholars, and those who contemplate the Vedas;

ਪੁਛਾ ਦੇਵਾਂ ਮਾਣਸਾਂ ਜੋਧ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥

पुछा देवां माणसां जोध करहि अवतार ॥

Puchhaa devaan maa(nn)asaan jodh karahi avataar ||

I could ask the gods, mortal men, warriors and divine incarnations;

ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਜਾਇ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥

सिध समाधी सभि सुणी जाइ देखां दरबारु ॥

Sidh samaadhee sabhi su(nn)ee jaai dekhaan darabaaru ||

I could consult all the Siddhas in Samaadhi, and go to see the Lord's Court.

ਅਗੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

अगै सचा सचि नाइ निरभउ भै विणु सारु ॥

Agai sachaa sachi naai nirabhau bhai vi(nn)u saaru ||

Hereafter, Truth is the Name of all; the Fearless Lord has no fear at all.

ਹੋਰ ਕਚੀ ਮਤੀ ਕਚੁ ਪਿਚੁ ਅੰਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

होर कची मती कचु पिचु अंधिआ अंधु बीचारु ॥

Hor kachee matee kachu pichu anddhiaa anddhu beechaaru ||

False are other intellectualisms, false and shallow; blind are the contemplations of the blind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਏ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

नानक करमी बंदगी नदरि लंघाए पारि ॥२॥

Naanak karamee banddagee nadari langghaae paari ||2||

O Nanak, by the karma of good actions, the mortal comes to meditate on the Lord; by His Grace, we are carried across. ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਈ ਮਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ दुरमति गई मति परगटी आइआ ॥

Naai manniai duramati gaee mati paragatee aaiaa ||

With faith in the Name, evil-mindedness is eradicated, and the intellect is enlightened.

ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

नाउ मंनिऐ हउमै गई सभि रोग गवाइआ ॥

Naau manniai haumai gaee sabhi rog gavaaiaa ||

With faith in the Name, egotism is eradicated, and all sickness is cured.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ नामु ऊपजै सहजे सुखु पाइआ ॥

Naai manniai naamu upajai sahaje sukhu paaiaa ||

Believing in the Name, The Name wells up, and intuitive peace and poise are obtained.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ सांति ऊपजै हरि मंनि वसाइआ ॥

Naai manniai saanti upajai hari manni vasaaiaa ||

Believing in the Name, tranquility and peace well up, and the Lord is enshrined in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੧੧॥

नानक नामु रतंनु है गुरमुखि हरि धिआइआ ॥११॥

Naanak naamu ratannu hai guramukhi hari dhiaaiaa ||11||

O Nanak, the Name is a jewel; the Gurmukh meditates on the Lord. ||11||

ਹੋਰੁ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਖਾਂ ॥

होरु सरीकु होवै कोई तेरा तिसु अगै तुधु आखां ॥

Horu sareeku hovai koee teraa tisu agai tudhu aakhaan ||

If there were any other equal to You, O Lord, I would speak to them of You.

ਤੁਧੁ ਅਗੈ ਤੁਧੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਅੰਧੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ॥

तुधु अगै तुधै सालाही मै अंधे नाउ सुजाखा ॥

Tudhu agai tudhai saalaahee mai anddhe naau sujaakhaa ||

You, I praise You; I am blind, but through the Name, I am all-seeing.

ਜੇਤਾ ਆਖਣੁ ਸਾਹੀ ਸਬਦੀ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥

जेता आखणु साही सबदी भाखिआ भाइ सुभाई ॥

Jetaa aakha(nn)u saahee sabadee bhaakhiaa bhaai subhaaee ||

Whatever is spoken, is the Word of the Shabad. Chanting it with love, we are embellished.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਏਹੋ ਆਖਣੁ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥

नानक बहुता एहो आखणु सभ तेरी वडिआई ॥१॥

Naanak bahutaa eho aakha(nn)u sabh teree vadiaaee ||1||

Nanak, this is the greatest thing to say: all glorious greatness is Yours. ||1||

ਜਾਂ ਨ ਸਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਾਂ ਜੰਮੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਾਰ ॥

जां न सिआ किआ चाकरी जां जमे किआ कार ॥

Jaan na siaa kiaa chaakaree jaan jamme kiaa kaar ||

When there was nothing, what happened? What happens when one is born?

ਸਭਿ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਦੇਖੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥

सभि कारण करता करे देखै वारो वार ॥

Sabhi kaara(nn) karataa kare dekhai vaaro vaar ||

The Creator, the Doer, does all; He watches over all, again and again

ਜੇ ਚੁਪੈ ਜੇ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥

जे चुपै जे मंगिऐ दाति करे दातारु ॥

Je chupai je manggiai daati kare daataaru ||

. Whether we keep silent or beg out loud, the Great Giver blesses us with His gifts.

ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਿ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

इकु दाता सभि मंगते फिरि देखहि आकारु ॥

Iku daataa sabhi manggate phiri dekhahi aakaaru ||

The One Lord is the Giver; we are all beggars. I have seen this throughout the Universe.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜੀਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

नानक एवै जाणीऐ जीवै देवणहारु ॥२॥

Naanak evai jaa(nn)eeai jeevai deva(nn)ahaaru ||2||

Nanak knows this: the Great Giver lives forever. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ सुरति ऊपजै नामे मति होई ॥

Naai manniai surati upajai naame mati hoee ||

With faith in the Name, intuitive awareness wells up; through the Name, intelligence comes.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ गुण उचरै नामे सुखि सोई ॥

Naai manniai gu(nn) ucharai naame sukhi soee ||

With faith in the Name, chant the Glories of God; through the Name, peace is obtained.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ भ्रमु कटीऐ फिरि दुखु न होई ॥

Naai manniai bhrmu kateeai phiri dukhu na hoee ||

With faith in the Name, doubt is eradicated, and the mortal never suffers again.

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਮਤਿ ਧੋਈ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ सालाहीऐ पापां मति धोई ॥

Naai manniai saalaaheeai paapaan mati dhoee ||

With faith in the Name, sing His Praises, and your sinful intellect shall be washed clean.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧੨॥

नानक पूरे गुर ते नाउ मंनीऐ जिन देवै सोई ॥१२॥

Naanak poore gur te naau manneeai jin devai soee ||12||

O Nanak, through the Perfect Guru, one comes to have faith in the Name; they alone receive it, unto whom He gives it. ||12||

ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੰਤਾ ॥

Saasatr bed puraa(nn) pa(rr)hanttaa ||

Some read the Shaastras, the Vedas and the Puraanas.

ਪੂਕਾਰੰਤਾ ਅਜਾਣੰਤਾ ॥

पूकारंता अजाणंता ॥

Pookaaranttaa ajaa(nn)anttaa ||

They recite them, out of ignorance.

ਜਾਂ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾਂ ਸੂਝੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

जां बूझै तां सूझै सोई ॥

Jaan boojhai taan soojhai soee ||

If they really understood them, they would realize the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਕੂਕ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

नानकु आखै कूक न होई ॥१॥

Naanaku aakhai kook na hoee ||1||

Nanak says, there is no need to shout so loud. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਜਾਂ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਂ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥

जां हउ तेरा तां सभु किछु मेरा हउ नाही तू होवहि ॥

Jaan hau teraa taan sabhu kichhu meraa hau naahee too hovahi ||

When I am Yours, then everything is mine. When I am not, You are.

ਆਪੇ ਸਕਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ਸਕਤੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰੋਵਹਿ ॥

आपे सकता आपे सुरता सकती जगतु परोवहि ॥

Aape sakataa aape surataa sakatee jagatu parovahi ||

You Yourself are All-powerful, and You Yourself are the Intuitive Knower. The whole world is strung on the Power of Your Shakti.

ਆਪੇ ਭੇਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਸਦੇ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥

आपे भेजे आपे सदे रचना रचि रचि वेखै ॥

Aape bheje aape sade rachanaa rachi rachi vekhai ||

You Yourself send out the mortal beings, and You Yourself call them back home. Having created the creation, You behold it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੀ ਨਾਂਈ ਸਚੁ ਪਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੨॥

नानक सचा सची नांई सचु पवै धुरि लेखै ॥२॥

Naanak sachaa sachee naanee sachu pavai dhuri lekhai ||2||

O Nanak, True is the Name of the True Lord; through Truth, one is accepted by the Primal Lord God. ||2||

Naamu niranjjan alakhu hai kiu lakhiaa jaaee ||

The Name of the Immaculate Lord is unknowable. How can it be known?

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ॥

नामु निरंजन नालि है किउ पाईऐ भाई ॥

Naamu niranjjan naali hai kiu paaeeai bhaaee ||

The Name of the Immaculate Lord is with the mortal being. How can it be obtained, O Siblings of Destiny?

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਠਾਂਈ ॥

नामु निरंजन वरतदा रविआ सभ ठांई ॥

Naamu niranjjan varatadaa raviaa sabh thaanee ||

The Name of the Immaculate Lord is all-pervading and permeating everywhere.

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਇ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥

गुर पूरे ते पाईऐ हिरदै देइ दिखाई ॥

Gur poore te paaeeai hiradai dei dikhaaee ||

Through the Perfect Guru, it is obtained. It is revealed within the heart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ॥੧੩॥

नानक नदरी करमु होइ गुर मिलीऐ भाई ॥१३॥

Naanak nadaree karamu hoi gur mileeai bhaaee ||13||

O Nanak, when the Merciful Lord grants His Grace, the mortal meets with the Guru, O Siblings of Destiny. ||13||

Kali hoee kute muhee khaaju hoaa muradaaru ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, people have faces like dogs; they eat rotting carcasses for food.

ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਭਉਕਣਾ ਚੂਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ु बोलि बोलि भउकणा चूका धरमु बीचारु ॥

Koo(rr)u boli boli bhauka(nn)aa chookaa dharamu beechaaru ||

They bark and speak, telling only lies; all thought of righteousness has left them.

ਜਿਨ ਜੀਵੰਦਿਆ ਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਮੰਦੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

जिन जीवंदिआ पति नही मुइआ मंदी सोइ ॥

Jin jeevanddiaa pati nahee muiaa manddee soi ||

Those who have no honor while alive, will have an evil reputation after they die.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

लिखिआ होवै नानका करता करे सु होइ ॥१॥

Likhiaa hovai naanakaa karataa kare su hoi ||1||

Whatever is predestined, happens, O Nanak; whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||1||

ਰੰਨਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਬੋਧੀਆ ਪੁਰਸ ਹੋਏ ਸਈਆਦ ॥

रंना होईआ बोधीआ पुरस होए सईआद ॥

Rannaa hoeeaa bodheeaa puras hoe saeeaad ||

Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters.

ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੁਚ ਭੰਨੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਹਾਜੁ ॥

सीलु संजमु सुच भंनी खाणा खाजु अहाजु ॥

Seelu sanjjamu such bhannee khaa(nn)aa khaaju ahaaju ||

Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food.

ਸਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

सरमु गइआ घरि आपणै पति उठि चली नालि ॥

Saramu gaiaa ghari aapa(nn)ai pati uthi chalee naali ||

Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

नानक सचा एकु है अउरु न सचा भालि ॥२॥

Naanak sachaa eku hai auru na sachaa bhaali ||2||

O Nanak, there is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2||

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਲੇਪਨ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥

बाहरि भसम लेपन करे अंतरि गुबारी ॥

Baahari bhasam lepan kare anttari gubaaree ||

You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

खिंथा झोली बहु भेख करे दुरमति अहंकारी ॥

Khintthaa jholee bahu bhekh kare duramati ahankkaaree ||

You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥

साहिब सबदु न ऊचरै माइआ मोह पसारी ॥

Saahib sabadu na ucharai maaiaa moh pasaaree ||

You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥

अंतरि लालचु भरमु है भरमै गावारी ॥

Anttari laalachu bharamu hai bharamai gaavaaree ||

Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥

नानक नामु न चेतई जूऐ बाजी हारी ॥१४॥

Naanak naamu na chetaee jooai baajee haaree ||14||

Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14||

ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਉ ॥

लख सिउ प्रीति होवै लख जीवणु किआ खुसीआ किआ चाउ ॥

Lakh siu preeti hovai lakh jeeva(nn)u kiaa khuseeaa kiaa chaau ||

You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations?

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

विछुड़िआ विसु होइ विछोड़ा एक घड़ी महि जाइ ॥

Vichhu(rr)iaa visu hoi vichho(rr)aa ek gha(rr)ee mahi jaai ||

And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

जे सउ वर्हिआ मिठा खाजै भी फिरि कउड़ा खाइ ॥

Je sau varhiaa mithaa khaajai bhee phiri kau(rr)aa khaai ||

You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well.

ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਧਾਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

मिठा खाधा चिति न आवै कउड़तणु धाइ जाइ ॥

Mithaa khaadhaa chiti na aavai kau(rr)ata(nn)u dhaai jaai ||

Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you.

ਮਿਠਾ ਕਉੜਾ ਦੋਵੈ ਰੋਗ ॥

मिठा कउड़ा दोवै रोग ॥

Mithaa kau(rr)aa dovai rog ||

The sweet and the bitter are both diseases.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥

नानक अंति विगुते भोग ॥

Naanak antti vigute bhog ||

O Nanak, eating them, you will come to ruin in the end.

ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਝਾਖ ॥

झखि झखि झखणा झगड़ा झाख ॥

Jhakhi jhakhi jhakha(nn)aa jhaga(rr)aa jhaakh ||

It is useless to worry and struggle to death.

ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝਖਹਿ ਤਿਨੑ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

झखि झखि जाहि झखहि तिन्ह पासि ॥१॥

Jhakhi jhakhi jaahi jhakhahi tinh paasi ||1||

Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1||

ਕਾਪੜੁ ਕਾਠੁ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਂਗਿ ॥

कापड़ु काठु रंगाइआ रांगि ॥

Kaapa(rr)u kaathu ranggaaiaa raangi ||

They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors.

ਘਰ ਗਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਬਾਗ ॥

घर गच कीते बागे बाग ॥

Ghar gach keete baage baag ||

Their houses are painted beautifully white.

ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਖੇਲਾਇਆ ॥

साद सहज करि मनु खेलाइआ ॥

Saad sahaj kari manu khelaaiaa ||

In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games.

ਤੈ ਸਹ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥

तै सह पासहु कहणु कहाइआ ॥

Tai sah paasahu kaha(nn)u kahaaiaa ||

When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to.

ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

मिठा करि कै कउड़ा खाइआ ॥

Mithaa kari kai kau(rr)aa khaaiaa ||

They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter.

ਤਿਨਿ ਕਉੜੈ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥

तिनि कउड़ै तनि रोगु जमाइआ ॥

Tini kau(rr)ai tani rogu jamaaiaa ||

The bitter disease grows in the body.

ਜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

जे फिरि मिठा पेड़ै पाइ ॥

Je phiri mithaa pe(rr)ai paai ||

If, later on, they receive the sweet,

ਤਉ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਮਾਇ ॥

तउ कउड़तणु चूकसि माइ ॥

Tau kau(rr)ata(nn)u chookasi maai ||

Then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

नानक गुरमुखि पावै सोइ ॥

Naanak guramukhi paavai soi ||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed to receive

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

जिस नो प्रापति लिखिआ होइ ॥२॥

Jis no praapati likhiaa hoi ||2||

What he is predestined to receive. ||2||

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਧੋਵਾਇਆ ॥

जिन कै हिरदै मैलु कपटु है बाहरु धोवाइआ ॥

Jin kai hiradai mailu kapatu hai baaharu dhovaaiaa ||

Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥

कूड़ु कपटु कमावदे कूड़ु परगटी आइआ ॥

Koo(rr)u kapatu kamaavade koo(rr)u paragatee aaiaa ||

They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਨਹ ਛਪੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥

अंदरि होइ सु निकलै नह छपै छपाइआ ॥

Anddari hoi su nikalai nah chhapai chhapaaiaa ||

That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment.

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

कूड़ै लालचि लगिआ फिरि जूनी पाइआ ॥

Koo(rr)ai laalachi lagiaa phiri joonee paaiaa ||

Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥

नानक जो बीजै सो खावणा करतै लिखि पाइआ ॥१५॥

Naanak jo beejai so khaava(nn)aa karatai likhi paaiaa ||15||

O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15||

ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦੀਂ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कथा कहाणी बेदीं आणी पापु पुंनु बीचारु ॥

Kathaa kahaa(nn)ee bedeen aa(nn)ee paapu punnu beechaaru ||

The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue.

ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੈਣਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥

दे दे लैणा लै लै देणा नरकि सुरगि अवतार ॥

De de lai(nn)aa lai lai de(nn)aa naraki suragi avataar ||

What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell.

ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

उतम मधिम जातीं जिनसी भरमि भवै संसारु ॥

Utam madhim jaateen jinasee bharami bhavai sanssaaru ||

High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਈ ॥

अम्रित बाणी ततु वखाणी गिआन धिआन विचि आई ॥

Ammmrit baa(nn)ee tatu vakhaa(nn)ee giaan dhiaan vichi aaee ||

The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਸੁਰਤੀਂ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥

गुरमुखि आखी गुरमुखि जाती सुरतीं करमि धिआई ॥

Guramukhi aakhee guramukhi jaatee surateen karami dhiaaee ||

The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥

हुकमु साजि हुकमै विचि रखै हुकमै अंदरि वेखै ॥

Hukamu saaji hukamai vichi rakhai hukamai anddari vekhai ||

By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥

नानक अगहु हउमै तुटै तां को लिखीऐ लेखै ॥१॥

Naanak agahu haumai tutai taan ko likheeai lekhai ||1||

O Nanak, if the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is pre-ordained, then he is approved. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਕਾ ਬੀਉ ॥

बेदु पुकारे पुंनु पापु सुरग नरक का बीउ ॥

Bedu pukaare punnu paapu surag narak kaa beeu ||

The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell.

ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਉਗਵੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

जो बीजै सो उगवै खांदा जाणै जीउ ॥

Jo beejai so ugavai khaandaa jaa(nn)ai jeeu ||

Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands.

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

गिआनु सलाहे वडा करि सचो सचा नाउ ॥

Giaanu salaahe vadaa kari sacho sachaa naau ||

Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name.

ਸਚੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥

सचु बीजै सचु उगवै दरगह पाईऐ थाउ ॥

Sachu beejai sachu ugavai daragah paaeeai thaau ||

When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor.

ਬੇਦੁ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥

बेदु वपारी गिआनु रासि करमी पलै होइ ॥

Bedu vapaaree giaanu raasi karamee palai hoi ||

The Vedas are only merchants; spiritual wisdom is the capital; by His Grace, it is received.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਸੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਲਦਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक रासी बाहरा लदि न चलिआ कोइ ॥२॥

Naanak raasee baaharaa ladi na chaliaa koi ||2||

O Nanak, without capital, no one has ever departed with profit. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਨਿੰਮੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

निमु बिरखु बहु संचीऐ अम्रित रसु पाइआ ॥

Nimmmu birakhu bahu sanccheeai ammmrit rasu paaiaa ||

You can water a bitter neem tree with ambrosial nectar.

ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਿ ਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ ਬਹੁ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ॥

बिसीअरु मंत्रि विसाहीऐ बहु दूधु पीआइआ ॥

Biseearu manttri visaaheeai bahu doodhu peeaaiaa ||

You can feed a venomous snake lots of milk.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅਭਿੰਨੁ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਪਥਰੁ ਨਾਵਾਇਆ ॥

मनमुखु अभिंनु न भिजई पथरु नावाइआ ॥

Manamukhu abhinnu na bhijaee patharu naavaaiaa ||

The self-willed manmukh is resistant; he cannot be softened. You might as well water a stone.

ਬਿਖੁ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਿੰਚੀਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

बिखु महि अम्रितु सिंचीऐ बिखु का फलु पाइआ ॥

Bikhu mahi ammmritu sinccheeai bikhu kaa phalu paaiaa ||

Irrigating a poisonous plant with ambrosial nectar, only poisonous fruit is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥

नानक संगति मेलि हरि सभ बिखु लहि जाइआ ॥१६॥

Naanak sanggati meli hari sabh bikhu lahi jaaiaa ||16||

O Lord, please unite Nanak with the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, so that he may be rid of all poison. ||16||

ਮਰਣਿ ਨ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਪੁਛੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਾਰੁ ॥

मरणि न मूरतु पुछिआ पुछी थिति न वारु ॥

Mara(nn)i na mooratu puchhiaa puchhee thiti na vaaru ||

Death does not ask the time; it does not ask the date or the day of the week.

ਇਕਨੑੀ ਲਦਿਆ ਇਕਿ ਲਦਿ ਚਲੇ ਇਕਨੑੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ॥

इकन्ही लदिआ इकि लदि चले इकन्ही बधे भार ॥

Ikanhee ladiaa iki ladi chale ikanhee badhe bhaar ||

Some have packed up, and some who have packed up have gone.

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਹੋਈ ਸਾਰ ॥

इकन्हा होई साखती इकन्हा होई सार ॥

Ikanhaa hoee saakhatee ikanhaa hoee saar ||

Some are severely punished, and some are taken care of.

ਲਸਕਰ ਸਣੈ ਦਮਾਮਿਆ ਛੁਟੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

लसकर सणै दमामिआ छुटे बंक दुआर ॥

Lasakar sa(nn)ai damaamiaa chhute bankk duaar ||

They must leave their armies and drums, and their beautiful mansions.

ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਈ ਛਾਰ ॥੧॥

नानक ढेरी छारु की भी फिरि होई छार ॥१॥

Naanak dheree chhaaru kee bhee phiri hoee chhaar ||1||

O Nanak, the pile of dust is once again reduced to dust. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਢੇਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਪਈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸੰਦਾ ਕੋਟੁ ॥

नानक ढेरी ढहि पई मिटी संदा कोटु ॥

Naanak dheree dhahi paee mitee sanddaa kotu ||

O Nanak, the pile shall fall apart; the fortress of the body is made of dust.

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਬਹਾਲਿਆ ਖੋਟੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਖੋਟੁ ॥੨॥

भीतरि चोरु बहालिआ खोटु वे जीआ खोटु ॥२॥

Bheetari choru bahaaliaa khotu ve jeeaa khotu ||2||

The thief has settled within you; O soul, your life is false. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਜਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹੈ ਨਕ ਵਢੇ ਨਕ ਵਢਾਇਆ ॥

जिन अंदरि निंदा दुसटु है नक वढे नक वढाइआ ॥

Jin anddari ninddaa dusatu hai nak vadhe nak vadhaaiaa ||

Those who are filled with vicious slander, shall have their noses cut, and be shamed.

ਮਹਾ ਕਰੂਪ ਦੁਖੀਏ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਲੇ ਮੁਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

महा करूप दुखीए सदा काले मुह माइआ ॥

Mahaa karoop dukheee sadaa kaale muh maaiaa ||

They are totally ugly, and always in pain. Their faces are blackened by Maya.

ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਨਿਤ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥

भलके उठि नित पर दरबु हिरहि हरि नामु चुराइआ ॥

Bhalake uthi nit par darabu hirahi hari naamu churaaiaa ||

They rise early in the morning, to cheat and steal from others; they hide from the Lord's Name.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥

हरि जीउ तिन की संगति मत करहु रखि लेहु हरि राइआ ॥

Hari jeeu tin kee sanggati mat karahu rakhi lehu hari raaiaa ||

O Dear Lord, let me not even associate with them; save me from them, O my Sovereign Lord King.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੭॥

नानक पइऐ किरति कमावदे मनमुखि दुखु पाइआ ॥१७॥

Naanak paiai kirati kamaavade manamukhi dukhu paaiaa ||17||

O Nanak, the self-willed manmukhs act according to their past deeds, producing nothing but pain. ||17||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभु कोई है खसम का खसमहु सभु को होइ ॥

Sabhu koee hai khasam kaa khasamahu sabhu ko hoi ||

Everyone belongs to our Lord and Master. Everyone came from Him.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

हुकमु पछाणै खसम का ता सचु पावै कोइ ॥

Hukamu pachhaa(nn)ai khasam kaa taa sachu paavai koi ||

Only by realizing the Hukam of His Command, is Truth obtained.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

गुरमुखि आपु पछाणीऐ बुरा न दीसै कोइ ॥

Guramukhi aapu pachhaa(nn)eeai buraa na deesai koi ||

The Gurmukh realizes his own self; no one appears evil to him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि नामु धिआईऐ सहिला आइआ सोइ ॥१॥

Naanak guramukhi naamu dhiaaeeai sahilaa aaiaa soi ||1||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Fruitful is his coming into the world. ||1||

Fourth Mehl:

ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

सभना दाता आपि है आपे मेलणहारु ॥

Sabhanaa daataa aapi hai aape mela(nn)ahaaru ||

He Himself is the Giver of all; He unites all with Himself.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

नानक सबदि मिले न विछुड़हि जिना सेविआ हरि दातारु ॥२॥

Naanak sabadi mile na vichhu(rr)ahi jinaa seviaa hari daataaru ||2||

O Nanak, they are united with the Word of the Shabad; serving the Lord, the Great Giver, they shall never be separated from Him again. ||2||

Pauree:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਉ ਉਗਵਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

गुरमुखि हिरदै सांति है नाउ उगवि आइआ ॥

Guramukhi hiradai saanti hai naau ugavi aaiaa ||

Peace and tranquility fill the heart of the Gurmukh; the Name wells up within them.

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

जप तप तीरथ संजम करे मेरे प्रभ भाइआ ॥

Jap tap teerath sanjjam kare mere prbh bhaaiaa ||

Chanting and meditation, penance and self-discipline, and bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage - the merits of these come by pleasing my God.

ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

हिरदा सुधु हरि सेवदे सोहहि गुण गाइआ ॥

Hiradaa sudhu hari sevade sohahi gu(nn) gaaiaa ||

So serve the Lord with a pure heart; singing His Glorious Praises, you shall be embellished and exalted.

ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥

मेरे हरि जीउ एवै भावदा गुरमुखि तराइआ ॥

Mere hari jeeu evai bhaavadaa guramukhi taraaiaa ||

My Dear Lord is pleased by this; he carries the Gurmukh across.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੮॥

नानक गुरमुखि मेलिअनु हरि दरि सोहाइआ ॥१८॥

Naanak guramukhi melianu hari dari sohaaiaa ||18||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is merged with the Lord; he is embellished in His Court. ||18||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਇਵ ਹੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਵਰੀ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਉ ॥

धनवंता इव ही कहै अवरी धन कउ जाउ ॥

Dhanavanttaa iv hee kahai avaree dhan kau jaau ||

Thus speaks the wealthy man: I should go and get more wealth.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਨਿ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥

नानकु निरधनु तितु दिनि जितु दिनि विसरै नाउ ॥१॥

Naanaku niradhanu titu dini jitu dini visarai naau ||1||

Nanak becomes poor on that day when he forgets the Lord's Name. ||1||

ਸੂਰਜੁ ਚੜੈ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ਸਭਸੈ ਘਟੈ ਆਰਜਾ ॥

सूरजु चड़ै विजोगि सभसै घटै आरजा ॥

Sooraju cha(rr)ai vijogi sabhasai ghatai aarajaa ||

The sun rises and sets, and the lives of all run out.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਭੋਗਿ ਕੋਈ ਹਾਰੈ ਕੋ ਜਿਣੈ ॥

तनु मनु रता भोगि कोई हारै को जिणै ॥

Tanu manu rataa bhogi koee haarai ko ji(nn)ai ||

The mind and body experience pleasures; one loses, and another wins.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਰਿਆ ਫੂਕਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਥੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੀਐ ॥

सभु को भरिआ फूकि आखणि कहणि न थम्हीऐ ॥

Sabhu ko bhariaa phooki aakha(nn)i kaha(nn)i na thammheeai ||

Everyone is puffed up with pride; even after they are spoken to, they do not stop.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਫੂਕ ਕਢਾਏ ਢਹਿ ਪਵੈ ॥੨॥

नानक वेखै आपि फूक कढाए ढहि पवै ॥२॥

Naanak vekhai aapi phook kadhaae dhahi pavai ||2||

O Nanak, the Lord Himself sees all; when He takes the air out of the balloon, the body falls. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

सतसंगति नामु निधानु है जिथहु हरि पाइआ ॥

Satasanggati naamu nidhaanu hai jithahu hari paaiaa ||

The treasure of the Name is in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. There, the Lord is found.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਆਨੑੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

गुर परसादी घटि चानणा आन्हेरु गवाइआ ॥

Gur parasaadee ghati chaana(nn)aa aanheru gavaaiaa ||

By Guru's Grace, the heart is illumined, and darkness is dispelled.

ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਰਸਿ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਇਆ ॥

लोहा पारसि भेटीऐ कंचनु होइ आइआ ॥

Lohaa paarasi bheteeai kancchanu hoi aaiaa ||

Iron is transformed into gold, when it touches the Philosopher's Stone.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

नानक सतिगुरि मिलिऐ नाउ पाईऐ मिलि नामु धिआइआ ॥

Naanak satiguri miliai naau paaeeai mili naamu dhiaaiaa ||

O Nanak, meeting with the True Guru, the Name is obtained. Meeting Him, the mortal meditates on the Name.

ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੯॥

जिन्ह कै पोतै पुंनु है तिन्ही दरसनु पाइआ ॥१९॥

Jinh kai potai punnu hai tinhee darasanu paaiaa ||19||

Those who have virtue as their treasure, obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ||19||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਵੇਚਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥

ध्रिगु तिना का जीविआ जि लिखि लिखि वेचहि नाउ ॥

Dhrigu tinaa kaa jeeviaa ji likhi likhi vechahi naau ||

Cursed are the lives of those who read and write the Lord's Name to sell it.

ਖੇਤੀ ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਉਜੜੈ ਖਲਵਾੜੇ ਕਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥

खेती जिन की उजड़ै खलवाड़े किआ थाउ ॥

Khetee jin kee uja(rr)ai khalavaa(rr)e kiaa thaau ||

Their crop is devastated - what harvest will they have?

ਸਚੈ ਸਰਮੈ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਅਗੈ ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਦਾਦਿ ॥

सचै सरमै बाहरे अगै लहहि न दादि ॥

Sachai saramai baahare agai lahahi na daadi ||

Lacking truth and humility, they shall not be appreciated in the world hereafter.

ਅਕਲਿ ਏਹ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਅਕਲਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਬਾਦਿ ॥

अकलि एह न आखीऐ अकलि गवाईऐ बादि ॥

Akali eh na aakheeai akali gavaaeeai baadi ||

Wisdom which leads to arguments is not called wisdom.

ਅਕਲੀ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅਕਲੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

अकली साहिबु सेवीऐ अकली पाईऐ मानु ॥

Akalee saahibu seveeai akalee paaeeai maanu ||

Wisdom leads us to serve our Lord and Master; through wisdom, honor is obtained.

ਅਕਲੀ ਪੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕੈ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਅਕਲੀ ਕੀਚੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

अकली पड़्हि कै बुझीऐ अकली कीचै दानु ॥

Akalee pa(rr)hi kai bujheeai akalee keechai daanu ||

Wisdom does not come by reading textbooks; wisdom inspires us to give in charity.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਰਾਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਗਲਾਂ ਸੈਤਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

नानकु आखै राहु एहु होरि गलां सैतानु ॥१॥

Naanaku aakhai raahu ehu hori galaan saitaanu ||1||

Says Nanak, this is the Path; other things lead to Satan. ||1||


ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Second Mehl:

ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਤੈਸਾ ਐਸੀ ਬਨੀ ਜਰੂਰਤਿ ॥

जैसा करै कहावै तैसा ऐसी बनी जरूरति ॥

Jaisaa karai kahaavai taisaa aisee banee jaroorati ||

Mortals are known by their actions; this is the way it has to be.

ਹੋਵਹਿ ਲਿੰਙ ਝਿੰਙ ਨਹ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੂਰਤਿ ॥

होवहि लिंङ झिंङ नह होवहि ऐसी कहीऐ सूरति ॥

Hovahi lin(ng)(ng) jhin(ng)(ng) nah hovahi aisee kaheeai soorati ||

They should show goodness, and not be deformed by their actions; this is how they are called beautiful.

ਜੋ ਓਸੁ ਇਛੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਮੂਰਤਿ ॥੨॥

जो ओसु इछे सो फलु पाए तां नानक कहीऐ मूरति ॥२॥

Jo osu ichhe so phalu paae taan naanak kaheeai moorati ||2||

Whatever they desire, they shall receive; O Nanak, they become the very image of God. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿ ਫਲਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरु अम्रित बिरखु है अम्रित रसि फलिआ ॥

Satiguru ammmrit birakhu hai ammmrit rasi phaliaa ||

The True Guru is the tree of ambrosia. it bears the fruit of sweet nectar.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਲਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥

जिसु परापति सो लहै गुर सबदी मिलिआ ॥

Jisu paraapati so lahai gur sabadee miliaa ||

He alone receives it, who is so pre-destined, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਲਿਆ ॥

सतिगुर कै भाणै जो चलै हरि सेती रलिआ ॥

Satigur kai bhaa(nn)ai jo chalai hari setee raliaa ||

One who walks in harmony with the Will of the True Guru, is blended with the Lord.

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਬਲਿਆ ॥

जमकालु जोहि न सकई घटि चानणु बलिआ ॥

Jamakaalu johi na sakaee ghati chaana(nn)u baliaa ||

The Messenger of Death cannot even see him; his heart is illumined with God's Light.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੨੦॥

नानक बखसि मिलाइअनु फिरि गरभि न गलिआ ॥२०॥

Naanak bakhasi milaaianu phiri garabhi na galiaa ||20||

O Nanak, God forgives him, and blends him with Himself; he does not rot away in the womb of reincarnation ever again. ||20||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सचु वरतु संतोखु तीरथु गिआनु धिआनु इसनानु ॥

Sachu varatu santtokhu teerathu giaanu dhiaanu isanaanu ||

Those who have truth as their fast, contentment as their sacred shrine of pilgrimage, spiritual wisdom and meditation as their cleansing bath,

ਦਇਆ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਪਰਧਾਨ ॥

दइआ देवता खिमा जपमाली ते माणस परधान ॥

Daiaa devataa khimaa japamaalee te maa(nn)as paradhaan ||

Kindness as their deity, and forgiveness as their chanting beads - they are the most excellent people.

ਜੁਗਤਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਚਉਕਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

जुगति धोती सुरति चउका तिलकु करणी होइ ॥

Jugati dhotee surati chaukaa tilaku kara(nn)ee hoi ||

Those who take the Way as their loincloth, and intuitive awareness their ritualistically purified enclosure, with good deeds their ceremonial forehead mark,

ਭਾਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਤ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥

भाउ भोजनु नानका विरला त कोई कोइ ॥१॥

Bhaau bhojanu naanakaa viralaa ta koee koi ||1||

And love their food - O Nanak, they are very rare. ||1||


ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

महला ३ ॥

Mahalaa 3 ||

Third Mehl:

ਨਉਮੀ ਨੇਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਜੇ ਕਰੈ ॥

नउमी नेमु सचु जे करै ॥

Naumee nemu sachu je karai ||

On the ninth day of the month, make a vow to speak the Truth,

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਚਰੈ ॥

काम क्रोधु त्रिसना उचरै ॥

Kaam krodhu trisanaa ucharai ||

And your sexual desire, anger and desire shall be eaten up.

ਦਸਮੀ ਦਸੇ ਦੁਆਰ ਜੇ ਠਾਕੈ ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

दसमी दसे दुआर जे ठाकै एकादसी एकु करि जाणै ॥

Dasamee dase duaar je thaakai ekaadasee eku kari jaa(nn)ai ||

On the tenth day, regulate your ten doors; on the eleventh day, know that the Lord is One.

ਦੁਆਦਸੀ ਪੰਚ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

दुआदसी पंच वसगति करि राखै तउ नानक मनु मानै ॥

Duaadasee pancch vasagati kari raakhai tau naanak manu maanai ||

On the twelfth day, the five thieves are subdued, and then, O Nanak, the mind is pleased and appeased.

ਐਸਾ ਵਰਤੁ ਰਹੀਜੈ ਪਾਡੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਖ ਕਿਆ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੨॥

ऐसा वरतु रहीजै पाडे होर बहुतु सिख किआ दीजै ॥२॥

Aisaa varatu raheejai paade hor bahutu sikh kiaa deejai ||2||

Observe such a fast as this, O Pandit, O religious scholar; of what use are all the other teachings? ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਇ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

भूपति राजे रंग राइ संचहि बिखु माइआ ॥

Bhoopati raaje rangg raai sancchahi bikhu maaiaa ||

Kings, rulers and monarchs enjoy pleasures and gather the poison of Maya.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਦੇ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥

करि करि हेतु वधाइदे पर दरबु चुराइआ ॥

Kari kari hetu vadhaaide par darabu churaaiaa ||

In love with it, they collect more and more, stealing the wealth of others.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਵਿਸਹਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਇਆ ॥

पुत्र कलत्र न विसहहि बहु प्रीति लगाइआ ॥

Putr kalatr na visahahi bahu preeti lagaaiaa ||

They do not trust their own children or spouses; they are totally attached to the love of Maya.

ਵੇਖਦਿਆ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੁਹਿ ਗਈ ਪਛੁਤਹਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਆ ॥

वेखदिआ ही माइआ धुहि गई पछुतहि पछुताइआ ॥

Vekhadiaa hee maaiaa dhuhi gaee pachhutahi pachhutaaiaa ||

But even as they look on, Maya cheats them, and they come to regret and repent.

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੧॥

जम दरि बधे मारीअहि नानक हरि भाइआ ॥२१॥

Jam dari badhe maareeahi naanak hari bhaaiaa ||21||

Bound and gagged at Death's door, they are beaten and punished; O Nanak, it pleases the Will of the Lord. ||21||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੀਤ ॥

गिआन विहूणा गावै गीत ॥

Giaan vihoo(nn)aa gaavai geet ||

The one who lacks spiritual wisdom sings religious songs.

ਭੁਖੇ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਘਰੇ ਮਸੀਤਿ ॥

भुखे मुलां घरे मसीति ॥

Bhukhe mulaan ghare maseeti ||

The hungry Mullah turns his home into a mosque.

ਮਖਟੂ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਏ ॥

मखटू होइ कै कंन पड़ाए ॥

Makhatoo hoi kai kann pa(rr)aae ||

The lazy unemployed has his ears pierced to look like a Yogi.

ਫਕਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

फकरु करे होरु जाति गवाए ॥

Phakaru kare horu jaati gavaae ||

Someone else becomes a pan-handler, and loses his social status.

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਸਦਾਏ ਮੰਗਣ ਜਾਇ ॥

गुरु पीरु सदाए मंगण जाइ ॥

Guru peeru sadaae mangga(nn) jaai ||

One who calls himself a guru or a spiritual teacher, while he goes around begging

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਲਗੀਐ ਪਾਇ ॥

ता कै मूलि न लगीऐ पाइ ॥

Taa kai mooli na lageeai paai ||

- don't ever touch his feet.

ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ ॥

घालि खाइ किछु हथहु देइ ॥

Ghaali khaai kichhu hathahu dei ||

One who works for what he eats, and gives some of what he has

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥੧॥

नानक राहु पछाणहि सेइ ॥१॥

Naanak raahu pachhaa(nn)ahi sei ||1||

- O Nanak, he knows the Path. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਮਨਹੁ ਜਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਕੂਪ ਕਹਿਆ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ॥

मनहु जि अंधे कूप कहिआ बिरदु न जाणन्ही ॥

Manahu ji anddhe koop kahiaa biradu na jaa(nn)anhee ||

Those mortals whose minds are like deep dark pits do not understand the purpose of life, even when it is explained to them.

ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਊਂਧੈ ਕਵਲਿ ਦਿਸਨੑਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੂਪ ॥

मनि अंधै ऊंधै कवलि दिसन्हि खरे करूप ॥

Mani anddhai undhai kavali disanhi khare karoop ||

Their minds are blind, and their heart-lotuses are upside-down; they look totally ugly.

ਇਕਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥

इकि कहि जाणहि कहिआ बुझहि ते नर सुघड़ सरूप ॥

Iki kahi jaa(nn)ahi kahiaa bujhahi te nar sugha(rr) saroop ||

Some know how to speak, and understand what they are told. They are wise and beautiful.

ਇਕਨਾ ਨਾਦ ਨ ਬੇਦ ਨ ਗੀਅ ਰਸੁ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਨ ਜਾਣੰਤਿ ॥

इकना नाद न बेद न गीअ रसु रस कस न जाणंति ॥

Ikanaa naad na bed na geea rasu ras kas na jaa(nn)antti ||

Some do not understand about the Sound-current of the Naad or the Vedas, music, virtue or vice.

ਇਕਨਾ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਅਕਲਿ ਸਰ ਅਖਰ ਕਾ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਲਹੰਤਿ ॥

इकना सुधि न बुधि न अकलि सर अखर का भेउ न लहंति ॥

Ikanaa sudhi na budhi na akali sar akhar kaa bheu na lahantti ||

Some are not blessed with understanding, intelligence, or sublime intellect; they do not grasp the mystery of God's Word.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਨਰ ਅਸਲਿ ਖਰ ਜਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੰਤਿ ॥੨॥

नानक से नर असलि खर जि बिनु गुण गरबु करंति ॥२॥

Naanak se nar asali khar ji binu gu(nn) garabu karantti ||2||

O Nanak, they are donkeys; they are very proud of themselves, but they have no virtues at all. ||2||

Pauree:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਭ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

गुरमुखि सभ पवितु है धनु स्मपै माइआ ॥

Guramukhi sabh pavitu hai dhanu samppai maaiaa ||

To the Gurmukh, everything is sacred: wealth, property, Maya.

ਹਰਿ ਅਰਥਿ ਜੋ ਖਰਚਦੇ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हरि अरथि जो खरचदे देंदे सुखु पाइआ ॥

Hari arathi jo kharachade dende sukhu paaiaa ||

Those who spend the wealth of the Lord find peace through giving.

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਤਿਨ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥

जो हरि नामु धिआइदे तिन तोटि न आइआ ॥

Jo hari naamu dhiaaide tin toti na aaiaa ||

Those who meditate on the Lord's Name shall never be deprived.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੁਟਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

गुरमुखां नदरी आवदा माइआ सुटि पाइआ ॥

Guramukhaan nadaree aavadaa maaiaa suti paaiaa ||

The Gurmukhs come to see the Lord, and leave behind the things of Maya.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਹੋਰੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੨੨॥

नानक भगतां होरु चिति न आवई हरि नामि समाइआ ॥२२॥

Naanak bhagataan horu chiti na aavaee hari naami samaaiaa ||22||

O Nanak, the devotees do not think of anything else; they are absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||22||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Shalok, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥

सतिगुरु सेवनि से वडभागी ॥

Satiguru sevani se vadabhaagee ||

Those who serve the True Guru are very fortunate.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

सचै सबदि जिन्हा एक लिव लागी ॥

Sachai sabadi jinhaa ek liv laagee ||

They are lovingly attuned to the True Shabad, the Word of the One God.

ਗਿਰਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਧੀ ॥

गिरह कुट्मब महि सहजि समाधी ॥

Girah kutambb mahi sahaji samaadhee ||

In their own household and family, they are in natural Samaadhi.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥੧॥

नानक नामि रते से सचे बैरागी ॥१॥

Naanak naami rate se sache bairaagee ||1||

O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are truly detached from the world. ||1||


ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Fourth Mehl:

ਗਣਤੈ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

गणतै सेव न होवई कीता थाइ न पाइ ॥

Ga(nn)atai sev na hovaee keetaa thaai na paai ||

Calculated service is not service at all, and what is done is not approved.

ਸਬਦੈ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਭਾਉ ॥

सबदै सादु न आइओ सचि न लगो भाउ ॥

Sabadai saadu na aaio sachi na lago bhaau ||

The flavor of the Shabad, the Word of God, is not tasted if the mortal is not in love with the True Lord God.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

सतिगुरु पिआरा न लगई मनहठि आवै जाइ ॥

Satiguru piaaraa na lagaee manahathi aavai jaai ||

The stubborn-minded person does not even like the True Guru; he comes and goes in reincarnation.

ਜੇ ਇਕ ਵਿਖ ਅਗਾਹਾ ਭਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਦਸ ਵਿਖਾਂ ਪਿਛਾਹਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

जे इक विख अगाहा भरे तां दस विखां पिछाहा जाइ ॥

Je ik vikh agaahaa bhare taan das vikhaan pichhaahaa jaai ||

He takes one step forward, and ten steps back.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

सतिगुर की सेवा चाकरी जे चलहि सतिगुर भाइ ॥

Satigur kee sevaa chaakaree je chalahi satigur bhaai ||

The mortal works to serve the True Guru, if he walks in harmony with the True Guru's Will.

ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

आपु गवाइ सतिगुरू नो मिलै सहजे रहै समाइ ॥

Aapu gavaai satiguroo no milai sahaje rahai samaai ||

He loses his self-conceit, and meets the True Guru; he remains intuitively absorbed in the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਚੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक तिन्हा नामु न वीसरै सचे मेलि मिलाइ ॥२॥

Naanak tinhaa naamu na veesarai sache meli milaai ||2||

O Nanak, they never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; they are united in Union with the True Lord. ||2||

Pauree:

ਖਾਨ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਇਦੇ ਕੋ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

खान मलूक कहाइदे को रहणु न पाई ॥

Khaan malook kahaaide ko raha(nn)u na paaee ||

They call themselves emperors and rulers, but none of them will be allowed to stay.

ਗੜ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਗਚ ਗੀਰੀਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

गड़्ह मंदर गच गीरीआ किछु साथि न जाई ॥

Ga(rr)h manddar gach geereeaa kichhu saathi na jaaee ||

Their sturdy forts and mansions - none of them will go along with them.

ਸੋਇਨ ਸਾਖਤਿ ਪਉਣ ਵੇਗ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

सोइन साखति पउण वेग ध्रिगु ध्रिगु चतुराई ॥

Soin saakhati pau(nn) veg dhrigu dhrigu chaturaaee ||

Their gold and horses, fast as the wind, are cursed, and cursed are their clever tricks.
