ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੀ ਵਰਤਣਿ ॥

राति दिनसु उपाइअनु संसार की वरतणि ॥

Raati dinasu upaaianu sanssaar kee varata(nn)i ||

He created the night and the day, for the activities of the world.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਆਨੇਰੁ ਬਿਨਾਸਣਿ ॥

गुरमती घटि चानणा आनेरु बिनासणि ॥

Guramatee ghati chaana(nn)aa aaneru binaasa(nn)i ||

Following the Guru's Teachings, one's heart is illumined, and the darkness is dispelled.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਵਣਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣਿ ॥

हुकमे ही सभ साजीअनु रविआ सभ वणि त्रिणि ॥

Hukame hee sabh saajeeanu raviaa sabh va(nn)i tri(nn)i ||

By the Hukam of His Command, He creates everything; He pervades and permeates all the woods and meadows.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਣਿ ॥

सभु किछु आपे आपि है गुरमुखि सदा हरि भणि ॥

Sabhu kichhu aape aapi hai guramukhi sadaa hari bha(nn)i ||

He Himself is everything; the Gurmukh constantly chants the Lord's Name.

ਸਬਦੇ ਹੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਸਚੈ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੫॥

सबदे ही सोझी पई सचै आपि बुझाई ॥५॥

Sabade hee sojhee paee sachai aapi bujhaaee ||5||

Through the Shabad, understanding comes; the True Lord Himself inspires us to understand. ||5||

ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਭਰਮੁ ॥

अभिआगत एहि न आखीअनि जिन के चित महि भरमु ॥

Abhiaagat ehi na aakheeani jin ke chit mahi bharamu ||

He is not called a renunciate, whose consciousness is filled with doubt.

ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਧਰਮੁ ॥

तिस दै दितै नानका तेहो जेहा धरमु ॥

Tis dai ditai naanakaa teho jehaa dharamu ||

Donations to him bring proportionate rewards.

ਅਭੈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਭੂਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

अभै निरंजनु परम पदु ता का भूखा होइ ॥

Abhai niranjjanu param padu taa kaa bhookhaa hoi ||

He hungers for the supreme status of the Fearless, Immaculate Lord;

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥

तिस का भोजनु नानका विरला पाए कोइ ॥१॥

Tis kaa bhojanu naanakaa viralaa paae koi ||1||

O Nanak, how rare are those who offer him this food. ||1||

ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

अभिआगत एहि न आखीअनि जि पर घरि भोजनु करेनि ॥

Abhiaagat ehi na aakheeani ji par ghari bhojanu kareni ||

They are not called renunciates, who take food in the homes of others.

ਉਦਰੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਹਲੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

उदरै कारणि आपणे बहले भेख करेनि ॥

Udarai kaara(nn)i aapa(nn)e bahale bhekh kareni ||

For the sake of their bellies, they wear various religious robes.

ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿ ਆਤਮ ਗਉਣੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

अभिआगत सेई नानका जि आतम गउणु करेनि ॥

Abhiaagat seee naanakaa ji aatam gau(nn)u kareni ||

They alone are renunciates, O Nanak, who enter into their own souls.

ਭਾਲਿ ਲਹਨਿ ਸਹੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਰਹਣੁ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥੨॥

भालि लहनि सहु आपणा निज घरि रहणु करेनि ॥२॥

Bhaali lahani sahu aapa(nn)aa nij ghari raha(nn)u kareni ||2||

They seek and find their Husband Lord; they dwell within the home of their own inner self. ||2||

Pauree:

ਅੰਬਰੁ ਧਰਤਿ ਵਿਛੋੜਿਅਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਅਸਰਾਉ ॥

अ्मबरु धरति विछोड़िअनु विचि सचा असराउ ॥

Ambbaru dharati vichho(rr)ianu vichi sachaa asaraau ||

They sky and the earth are separate, but the True Lord supports them from within.

ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਸਭੋ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

घरु दरु सभो सचु है जिसु विचि सचा नाउ ॥

Gharu daru sabho sachu hai jisu vichi sachaa naau ||

True are all those homes and gates, within which the True Name is enshrined.

ਸਭੁ ਸਚਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥

सभु सचा हुकमु वरतदा गुरमुखि सचि समाउ ॥

Sabhu sachaa hukamu varatadaa guramukhi sachi samaau ||

The Hukam of the True Lord's Command is effective everywhere. The Gurmukh merges in the True Lord.

ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਤਖਤੁ ਸਚਾ ਬਹਿ ਸਚਾ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਆਉ ॥

सचा आपि तखतु सचा बहि सचा करे निआउ ॥

Sachaa aapi takhatu sachaa bahi sachaa kare niaau ||

He Himself is True, and True is His throne. Seated upon it, He administers true justice.

ਸਭੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਈ ॥੬॥

सभु सचो सचु वरतदा गुरमुखि अलखु लखाई ॥६॥

Sabhu sacho sachu varatadaa guramukhi alakhu lakhaaee ||6||

The Truest of the True is all-pervading everywhere; the Gurmukh sees the unseen. ||6||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਰੈਣਾਇਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਅਨੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

रैणाइर माहि अनंतु है कूड़ी आवै जाइ ॥

Rai(nn)aair maahi ananttu hai koo(rr)ee aavai jaai ||

In the world-ocean, the Infinite Lord abides. The false come and go in reincarnation.

ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਆਪਣੈ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

भाणै चलै आपणै बहुती लहै सजाइ ॥

Bhaa(nn)ai chalai aapa(nn)ai bahutee lahai sajaai ||

One who walks according to his own will, suffers terrible punishment.

ਰੈਣਾਇਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

रैणाइर महि सभु किछु है करमी पलै पाइ ॥

Rai(nn)aair mahi sabhu kichhu hai karamee palai paai ||

All things are in the world-ocean, but they are obtained only by the karma of good actions.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक नउ निधि पाईऐ जे चलै तिसै रजाइ ॥१॥

Naanak nau nidhi paaeeai je chalai tisai rajaai ||1||

O Nanak, he alone obtains the nine treasures, who walks in the Will of the Lord. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਸਹਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥

सहजे सतिगुरु न सेविओ विचि हउमै जनमि बिनासु ॥

Sahaje satiguru na sevio vichi haumai janami binaasu ||

One who does not intuitively serve the True Guru, wastes his life in egotism.

ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨ ਚਖਿਓ ਕਮਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਇਓ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥

रसना हरि रसु न चखिओ कमलु न होइओ परगासु ॥

Rasanaa hari rasu na chakhio kamalu na hoio paragaasu ||

His tongue does not taste the sublime essence of the Lord, and his heart-lotus does not blossom forth.

ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਧੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥

बिखु खाधी मनमुखु मुआ माइआ मोहि विणासु ॥

Bikhu khaadhee manamukhu muaa maaiaa mohi vi(nn)aasu ||

The self-willed manmukh eats poison and dies; he is ruined by love and attachment to Maya.

ਇਕਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

इकसु हरि के नाम विणु ध्रिगु जीवणु ध्रिगु वासु ॥

Ikasu hari ke naam vi(nn)u dhrigu jeeva(nn)u dhrigu vaasu ||

Without the Name of the One Lord, his life is cursed, and his home is cursed as well.

ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਚਾ ਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸੁ ॥

जा आपे नदरि करे प्रभु सचा ता होवै दासनि दासु ॥

Jaa aape nadari kare prbhu sachaa taa hovai daasani daasu ||

When God Himself bestows His Glance of Grace, then one becomes the slave of His slaves.

ਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਪਾਸੁ ॥

ता अनदिनु सेवा करे सतिगुरू की कबहि न छोडै पासु ॥

Taa anadinu sevaa kare satiguroo kee kabahi na chhodai paasu ||

And then, night and day, he serves the True Guru, and never leaves His side.

ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਿਉ ਵਿਚੇ ਗਿਰਹ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥

जिउ जल महि कमलु अलिपतो वरतै तिउ विचे गिरह उदासु ॥

Jiu jal mahi kamalu alipato varatai tiu viche girah udaasu ||

As the lotus flower floats unaffected in the water, so does he remain detached in his own household.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੨॥

जन नानक करे कराइआ सभु को जिउ भावै तिव हरि गुणतासु ॥२॥

Jan naanak kare karaaiaa sabhu ko jiu bhaavai tiv hari gu(nn)ataasu ||2||

O servant Nanak, the Lord acts, and inspires everyone to act, according to the Pleasure of His Will. He is the treasure of virtue. ||2||

Pauree:

ਛਤੀਹ ਜੁਗ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਸਾ ਆਪੇ ਗਣਤ ਕੀਨੀ ॥

छतीह जुग गुबारु सा आपे गणत कीनी ॥

Chhateeh jug gubaaru saa aape ga(nn)at keenee ||

For thirty-six ages, there was utter darkness. Then, the Lord revealed Himself.

ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਮਤਿ ਦੀਨੀ ॥

आपे स्रिसटि सभ साजीअनु आपि मति दीनी ॥

Aape srisati sabh saajeeanu aapi mati deenee ||

He Himself created the entire universe. He Himself blessed it with understanding.

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਾਜਿਅਨੁ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਨੀ ॥

सिम्रिति सासत साजिअनु पाप पुंन गणत गणीनी ॥

Simriti saasat saajianu paap punn ga(nn)at ga(nn)eenee ||

He created the Simritees and the Shaastras; He calculates the accounts of virtue and vice.

ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਨੀ ॥

जिसु बुझाए सो बुझसी सचै सबदि पतीनी ॥

Jisu bujhaae so bujhasee sachai sabadi pateenee ||

He alone understands, whom the Lord inspires to understand and to be pleased with the True Word of the Shabad.

ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੭॥

सभु आपे आपि वरतदा आपे बखसि मिलाई ॥७॥

Sabhu aape aapi varatadaa aape bakhasi milaaee ||7||

He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself forgives, and unites with Himself. ||7||

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਭੋ ਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਰਤੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੰਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

इहु तनु सभो रतु है रतु बिनु तंनु न होइ ॥

Ihu tanu sabho ratu hai ratu binu tannu na hoi ||

This body is all blood; without blood, the body cannot exist.

ਜੋ ਸਹਿ ਰਤੇ ਆਪਣੈ ਤਿਨ ਤਨਿ ਲੋਭ ਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

जो सहि रते आपणै तिन तनि लोभ रतु न होइ ॥

Jo sahi rate aapa(nn)ai tin tani lobh ratu na hoi ||

Those who are attuned to their Lord - their bodies are not filled with the blood of greed.

ਭੈ ਪਇਐ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਲੋਭ ਰਤੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

भै पइऐ तनु खीणु होइ लोभ रतु विचहु जाइ ॥

Bhai paiai tanu khee(nn)u hoi lobh ratu vichahu jaai ||

In the Fear of God, the body becomes thin, and the blood of greed passes out of the body.

ਜਿਉ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਤੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

जिउ बैसंतरि धातु सुधु होइ तिउ हरि का भउ दुरमति मैलु गवाइ ॥

Jiu baisanttari dhaatu sudhu hoi tiu hari kaa bhau duramati mailu gavaai ||

As fire purifies metal, so does the Fear of the Lord eradicate the filth of evil-mindedness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक ते जन सोहणे जो रते हरि रंगु लाइ ॥१॥

Naanak te jan soha(nn)e jo rate hari ranggu laai ||1||

O Nanak, beautiful are those humble beings, who are imbued with the Lord's Love. ||1||

ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਤਾ ਬਨਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

रामकली रामु मनि वसिआ ता बनिआ सीगारु ॥

Raamakalee raamu mani vasiaa taa baniaa seegaaru ||

In Raamkalee, I have enshrined the Lord in my mind; thus I have been embellished.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਸਿਆ ਤਾ ਸਉਪਿਆ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰੁ ॥

गुर कै सबदि कमलु बिगसिआ ता सउपिआ भगति भंडारु ॥

Gur kai sabadi kamalu bigasiaa taa saupiaa bhagati bhanddaaru ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, my heart-lotus has blossomed forth; the Lord blessed me with the treasure of devotional worship.

ਭਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਾ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧਾਰੁ ॥

भरमु गइआ ता जागिआ चूका अगिआन अंधारु ॥

Bharamu gaiaa taa jaagiaa chookaa agiaan anddhaaru ||

My doubt was dispelled, and I woke up; the darkness of ignorance was dispelled.

ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਲਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

तिस नो रूपु अति अगला जिसु हरि नालि पिआरु ॥

Tis no roopu ati agalaa jisu hari naali piaaru ||

She who is in love with her Lord, is the most infinitely beautiful.

ਸਦਾ ਰਵੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

सदा रवै पिरु आपणा सोभावंती नारि ॥

Sadaa ravai piru aapa(nn)aa sobhaavanttee naari ||

Such a beautiful, happy soul-bride enjoys her Husband Lord forever.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਾਰਿ ॥

मनमुखि सीगारु न जाणनी जासनि जनमु सभु हारि ॥

Manamukhi seegaaru na jaa(nn)anee jaasani janamu sabhu haari ||

The self-willed manmukhs do not know how to decorate themselves; wasting their whole lives, they depart.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

बिनु हरि भगती सीगारु करहि नित जमहि होइ खुआरु ॥

Binu hari bhagatee seegaaru karahi nit jammahi hoi khuaaru ||

Those who decorate themselves without devotional worship to the Lord, are continually reincarnated to suffer.

ਸੈਸਾਰੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੋਭ ਨ ਪਾਇਨੀ ਅਗੈ ਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

सैसारै विचि सोभ न पाइनी अगै जि करे सु जाणै करतारु ॥

Saisaarai vichi sobh na paainee agai ji kare su jaa(nn)ai karataaru ||

They do not obtain respect in this world; the Creator Lord alone knows what will happen to them in the world hereafter.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

नानक सचा एकु है दुहु विचि है संसारु ॥

Naanak sachaa eku hai duhu vichi hai sanssaaru ||

O Nanak, the True Lord is the One and only; duality exists only in the world.

ਚੰਗੈ ਮੰਦੈ ਆਪਿ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਸੋ ਕਰਨਿ ਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

चंगै मंदै आपि लाइअनु सो करनि जि आपि कराए करतारु ॥२॥

Changgai manddai aapi laaianu so karani ji aapi karaae karataaru ||2||

He Himself enjoins them to good and bad; they do only that which the Creator Lord causes them to do. ||2||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर सेवे सांति न आवई दूजी नाही जाइ ॥

Binu satigur seve saanti na aavaee doojee naahee jaai ||

Without serving the True Guru, tranquility is not obtained. It cannot be found anywhere else.

ਜੇ ਬਹੁਤੇਰਾ ਲੋਚੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

जे बहुतेरा लोचीऐ विणु करमा पाइआ न जाइ ॥

Je bahuteraa locheeai vi(nn)u karamaa paaiaa na jaai ||

No matter how much one may long for it, without the karma of good actions, it cannot be found.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਇ ॥

अंतरि लोभु विकारु है दूजै भाइ खुआइ ॥

Anttari lobhu vikaaru hai doojai bhaai khuaai ||

Those whose inner beings are filled with greed and corruption, are ruined through the love of duality.

ਤਿਨ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

तिन जमणु मरणु न चुकई हउमै विचि दुखु पाइ ॥

Tin jamma(nn)u mara(nn)u na chukaee haumai vichi dukhu paai ||

The cycle of birth and death is not ended, and filled with egotism, they suffer in pain.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਸੋ ਖਾਲੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

जिनी सतिगुर सिउ चितु लाइआ सो खाली कोई नाहि ॥

Jinee satigur siu chitu laaiaa so khaalee koee naahi ||

Those who focus their consciousness on the True Guru, do not remain unfulfilled.

ਤਿਨ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤਲਬ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥

तिन जम की तलब न होवई ना ओइ दुख सहाहि ॥

Tin jam kee talab na hovaee naa oi dukh sahaahi ||

They are not summoned by the Messenger of Death, and they do not suffer in pain.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

नानक गुरमुखि उबरे सचै सबदि समाहि ॥३॥

Naanak guramukhi ubare sachai sabadi samaahi ||3||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is saved, merging in the True Word of the Shabad. ||3||

ਆਪਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹੋਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਸਭਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥

आपि अलिपतु सदा रहै होरि धंधै सभि धावहि ॥

Aapi alipatu sadaa rahai hori dhanddhai sabhi dhaavahi ||

He Himself remains unattached forever; all others run after worldly affairs.

ਆਪਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਅਚਲੁ ਹੈ ਹੋਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥

आपि निहचलु अचलु है होरि आवहि जावहि ॥

Aapi nihachalu achalu hai hori aavahi jaavahi ||

He Himself is eternal, unchanging and unmoving; the others continue coming and going in reincarnation.

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

सदा सदा हरि धिआईऐ गुरमुखि सुखु पावहि ॥

Sadaa sadaa hari dhiaaeeai guramukhi sukhu paavahi ||

Meditating on the Lord forever and ever, the Gurmukh finds peace.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥

निज घरि वासा पाईऐ सचि सिफति समावहि ॥

Nij ghari vaasaa paaeeai sachi siphati samaavahi ||

He dwells in the home of his own inner being, absorbed in the Praise of the True Lord.

ਸਚਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੮॥

सचा गहिर ग्मभीरु है गुर सबदि बुझाई ॥८॥

Sachaa gahir gambbheeru hai gur sabadi bujhaaee ||8||

The True Lord is profound and unfathomable; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is understood. ||8||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਸਭੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ॥

सचा नामु धिआइ तू सभो वरतै सचु ॥

Sachaa naamu dhiaai too sabho varatai sachu ||

Meditate on the True Name; the True Lord is all-pervading.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਸਚੁ ॥

नानक हुकमै जो बुझै सो फलु पाए सचु ॥

Naanak hukamai jo bujhai so phalu paae sachu ||

O Nanak, one who realizes the Hukam of the Lord's Command, obtains the fruit of Truth.

ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚੁ ॥

कथनी बदनी करता फिरै हुकमु न बूझै सचु ॥

Kathanee badanee karataa phirai hukamu na boojhai sachu ||

One who merely mouths the words, does not understand the Hukam of the True Lord's Command.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਸੋ ਭਗਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਕਚੁ ਨਿਕਚੁ ॥੧॥

नानक हरि का भाणा मंने सो भगतु होइ विणु मंने कचु निकचु ॥१॥

Naanak hari kaa bhaa(nn)aa manne so bhagatu hoi vi(nn)u manne kachu nikachu ||1||

O Nanak, one who accepts the Will of the Lord is His devotee. Without accepting it, he is the falsest of the false. ||1||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਓਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

मनमुख बोलि न जाणनी ओना अंदरि कामु क्रोधु अहंकारु ॥

Manamukh boli na jaa(nn)anee onaa anddari kaamu krodhu ahankkaaru ||

The self-willed manmukhs do not know what they are saying. They are filled with sexual desire, anger and egotism.

ਓਇ ਥਾਉ ਕੁਥਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਉਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

ओइ थाउ कुथाउ न जाणनी उन अंतरि लोभु विकारु ॥

Oi thaau kuthaau na jaa(nn)anee un anttari lobhu vikaaru ||

They do not understand right places and wrong places; they are filled with greed and corruption.

ਓਇ ਆਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਆਇ ਬਹਿ ਗਲਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਓਨਾ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ॥

ओइ आपणै सुआइ आइ बहि गला करहि ओना मारे जमु जंदारु ॥

Oi aapa(nn)ai suaai aai bahi galaa karahi onaa maare jamu janddaaru ||

They come, and sit and talk for their own purposes. The Messenger of Death strikes them down.

ਅਗੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਲੇਖੈ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਮਾਰਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ਕੀਚਹਿ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥

अगै दरगह लेखै मंगिऐ मारि खुआरु कीचहि कूड़िआर ॥

Agai daragah lekhai manggiai maari khuaaru keechahi koo(rr)iaar ||

Hereafter, they are called to account in the Court of the Lord; the false ones are struck down and humiliated.

ਏਹ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਉਤਰੈ ਕੋਈ ਕਢਹੁ ਇਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

एह कूड़ै की मलु किउ उतरै कोई कढहु इहु वीचारु ॥

Eh koo(rr)ai kee malu kiu utarai koee kadhahu ihu veechaaru ||

How can this filth of falsehood be washed off? Can anyone think about this, and find the way?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜਾਏ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

सतिगुरु मिलै ता नामु दिड़ाए सभि किलविख कटणहारु ॥

Satiguru milai taa naamu di(rr)aae sabhi kilavikh kata(nn)ahaaru ||

If one meets with the True Guru, He implants the Naam, the Name of the Lord within; all his sins are destroyed.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਮੋ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥

नामु जपे नामो आराधे तिसु जन कउ करहु सभि नमसकारु ॥

Naamu jape naamo aaraadhe tisu jan kau karahu sabhi namasakaaru ||

Let all bow in humility to that humble being who chants the Naam, and worships the Naam in adoration.

ਮਲੁ ਕੂੜੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਤਾਰੀਅਨੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥

मलु कूड़ी नामि उतारीअनु जपि नामु होआ सचिआरु ॥

Malu koo(rr)ee naami utaareeanu japi naamu hoaa sachiaaru ||

The Naam washes off the filth of falsehood; chanting the Naam, one becomes truthful.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਏਹਿ ਚਲਤ ਹਹਿ ਸੋ ਜੀਵਉ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

जन नानक जिस दे एहि चलत हहि सो जीवउ देवणहारु ॥२॥

Jan naanak jis de ehi chalat hahi so jeevau deva(nn)ahaaru ||2||

O servant Nanak, wondrous are the plays of the Lord, the Giver of life. ||2||

ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥

तुधु जेवडु दाता नाहि किसु आखि सुणाईऐ ॥

Tudhu jevadu daataa naahi kisu aakhi su(nn)aaeeai ||

You are the Great Giver; no other is as great as You. Unto whom should I speak and talk?

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

गुर परसादी पाइ जिथहु हउमै जाईऐ ॥

Gur parasaadee paai jithahu haumai jaaeeai ||

By Guru's Grace, I find You; You eradicate egotism from within.

ਰਸ ਕਸ ਸਾਦਾ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈਐ ॥

रस कस सादा बाहरा सची वडिआईऐ ॥

Ras kas saadaa baaharaa sachee vadiaaeeai ||

You are beyond sweet and salty flavors; True is Your glorious greatness.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਇ ਆਪਿ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ॥

जिस नो बखसे तिसु देइ आपि लए मिलाईऐ ॥

Jis no bakhase tisu dei aapi lae milaaeeai ||

You bless those whom You forgive, and unite them with Yourself.

ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਿਆਈ ॥੯॥

घट अंतरि अम्रितु रखिओनु गुरमुखि किसै पिआई ॥९॥

Ghat anttari ammmritu rakhionu guramukhi kisai piaaee ||9||

You have placed the Ambrosial Nectar deep within the heart; the Gurmukh drinks it in. ||9||

ਬਾਬਾਣੀਆ ਕਹਾਣੀਆ ਪੁਤ ਸਪੁਤ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

बाबाणीआ कहाणीआ पुत सपुत करेनि ॥

Baabaa(nn)eeaa kahaa(nn)eeaa put saput kareni ||

The stories of one's ancestors make the children good children.

ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਸੇਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

जि सतिगुर भावै सु मंनि लैनि सेई करम करेनि ॥

Ji satigur bhaavai su manni laini seee karam kareni ||

They accept what is pleasing to the Will of the True Guru, and act accordingly.

ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬਿਆਸ ਸੁਕ ਨਾਰਦ ਬਚਨ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

जाइ पुछहु सिम्रिति सासत बिआस सुक नारद बचन सभ स्रिसटि करेनि ॥

Jaai puchhahu simriti saasat biaas suk naarad bachan sabh srisati kareni ||

Go and consult the Simritees, the Shaastras, the writings of Vyaas, Suk Dayv, Naarad, and all those who preach to the world.

ਸਚੈ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਲਗੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲੇਨਿ ॥

सचै लाए सचि लगे सदा सचु समालेनि ॥

Sachai laae sachi lage sadaa sachu samaaleni ||

Those, whom the True Lord attaches, are attached to the Truth; they contemplate the True Name forever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਏ ਸੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਭਏ ਜਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇਨਿ ॥੧॥

नानक आए से परवाणु भए जि सगले कुल तारेनि ॥१॥

Naanak aae se paravaa(nn)u bhae ji sagale kul taareni ||1||

O Nanak, their coming into the world is approved; they redeem all their ancestors. ||1||

ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਸਿਖ ਭੀ ਅੰਧੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

गुरू जिना का अंधुला सिख भी अंधे करम करेनि ॥

Guroo jinaa kaa anddhulaa sikh bhee anddhe karam kareni ||

The disciples whose teacher is blind, act blindly as well.

ਓਇ ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲਨਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਨਿਤ ਝੂਠੋ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲੇਨਿ ॥

ओइ भाणै चलनि आपणै नित झूठो झूठु बोलेनि ॥

Oi bhaa(nn)ai chalani aapa(nn)ai nit jhootho jhoothu boleni ||

They walk according to their own wills, and continually speak falsehood and lies.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

कूड़ु कुसतु कमावदे पर निंदा सदा करेनि ॥

Koo(rr)u kusatu kamaavade par ninddaa sadaa kareni ||

They practice falsehood and deception, and endlessly slander others.

ਓਇ ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਡੋਬੇਨਿ ॥

ओइ आपि डुबे पर निंदका सगले कुल डोबेनि ॥

Oi aapi dube par ninddakaa sagale kul dobeni ||

Slandering others, they drown themselves, and drown all their generations as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਤੁ ਓਇ ਲਾਏ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗੇ ਉਇ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥੨॥

नानक जितु ओइ लाए तितु लगे उइ बपुड़े किआ करेनि ॥२॥

Naanak jitu oi laae titu lage ui bapu(rr)e kiaa kareni ||2||

O Nanak, whatever the Lord links them to, to that they are linked; what can the poor creatures do? ||2||

ਸਭ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਦਾ ਜੇਤੀ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਕੀਤੀ ॥

Sabh nadaree anddari rakhadaa jetee sisati sabh keetee ||

He keeps all under His Gaze; He created the entire Universe.

ਇਕਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕੁਸਤਿ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ॥

इकि कूड़ि कुसति लाइअनु मनमुख विगूती ॥

Iki koo(rr)i kusati laaianu manamukh vigootee ||

He has linked some to falsehood and deception; these self-willed manmukhs are plundered.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ॥

गुरमुखि सदा धिआईऐ अंदरि हरि प्रीती ॥

Guramukhi sadaa dhiaaeeai anddari hari preetee ||

The Gurmukhs meditate on the Lord forever; their inner beings are filled with love.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨੑ ਵਾਤਿ ਸਿਪੀਤੀ ॥

जिन कउ पोतै पुंनु है तिन्ह वाति सिपीती ॥

Jin kau potai punnu hai tinh vaati sipeetee ||

Those who have the treasure of virtue, chant the Praises of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਈ ॥੧੦॥

नानक नामु धिआईऐ सचु सिफति सनाई ॥१०॥

Naanak naamu dhiaaeeai sachu siphati sanaaee ||10||

O Nanak, meditate on the Naam, and the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. ||10||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਤੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

सती पापु करि सतु कमाहि ॥

Satee paapu kari satu kamaahi ||

Men of charity gather wealth by committing sins, and then give it away in donations to charity.

ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਦੇਵਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

गुर दीखिआ घरि देवण जाहि ॥

Gur deekhiaa ghari deva(nn) jaahi ||

Their spiritual teachers go to their homes to instruct them.

ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਭਾਉ ॥

इसतरी पुरखै खटिऐ भाउ ॥

Isataree purakhai khatiai bhaau ||

The woman loves the man only for his wealth;

ਭਾਵੈ ਆਵਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

भावै आवउ भावै जाउ ॥

Bhaavai aavau bhaavai jaau ||

They come and go as they please.

ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

सासतु बेदु न मानै कोइ ॥

Saasatu bedu na maanai koi ||

No one obeys the Shaastras or the Vedas.

ਆਪੋ ਆਪੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

आपो आपै पूजा होइ ॥

Aapo aapai poojaa hoi ||

Everyone worships himself.

ਕਾਜੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਆਇ ॥

काजी होइ कै बहै निआइ ॥

Kaajee hoi kai bahai niaai ||

Becoming judges, they sit and administer justice.

ਫੇਰੇ ਤਸਬੀ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

फेरे तसबी करे खुदाइ ॥

Phere tasabee kare khudaai ||

They chant on their malas, and call upon God.

ਵਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਹਕੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

वढी लै कै हकु गवाए ॥

Vadhee lai kai haku gavaae ||

They accept bribes, and block justice.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪੁਛੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥

जे को पुछै ता पड़ि सुणाए ॥

Je ko puchhai taa pa(rr)i su(nn)aae ||

If someone asks them, they read quotations from their books.

ਤੁਰਕ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਕਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

तुरक मंत्रु कनि रिदै समाहि ॥

Turak manttru kani ridai samaahi ||

The Muslim scriptures are in their ears and in their hearts.

ਲੋਕ ਮੁਹਾਵਹਿ ਚਾੜੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

लोक मुहावहि चाड़ी खाहि ॥

Lok muhaavahi chaa(rr)ee khaahi ||

They plunder the people, and engage in gossip and flattery.

ਚਉਕਾ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

चउका दे कै सुचा होइ ॥

Chaukaa de kai suchaa hoi ||

They anoint their kitchens to try to become pure.

ਐਸਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

ऐसा हिंदू वेखहु कोइ ॥

Aisaa hinddoo vekhahu koi ||

Behold, such is the Hindu.

ਜੋਗੀ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਭੂਤ ॥

जोगी गिरही जटा बिभूत ॥

Jogee girahee jataa bibhoot ||

The Yogi, with matted hair and ashes on his body, has become a householder.

ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥

आगै पाछै रोवहि पूत ॥

Aagai paachhai rovahi poot ||

The children weep in front of him and behind him.

ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

जोगु न पाइआ जुगति गवाई ॥

Jogu na paaiaa jugati gavaaee ||

He does not attain Yoga - he has lost his way.

ਕਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥

कितु कारणि सिरि छाई पाई ॥

Kitu kaara(nn)i siri chhaaee paaee ||

Why does he apply ashes to his forehead?

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

नानक कलि का एहु परवाणु ॥

Naanak kali kaa ehu paravaa(nn)u ||

O Nanak, this is the sign of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;

ਆਪੇ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥

आपे आखणु आपे जाणु ॥१॥

Aape aakha(nn)u aape jaa(nn)u ||1||

Everyone says that he himself knows. ||1||

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਆਵੈ ॥

हिंदू कै घरि हिंदू आवै ॥

Hinddoo kai ghari hinddoo aavai ||

The Hindu comes to the house of a Hindu.

ਸੂਤੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਪੜਿ ਗਲਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

सूतु जनेऊ पड़ि गलि पावै ॥

Sootu janeu pa(rr)i gali paavai ||

He puts the sacred thread around his neck and reads the scriptures.

ਸੂਤੁ ਪਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥

सूतु पाइ करे बुरिआई ॥

Sootu paai kare buriaaee ||

He puts on the thread, but does evil deeds.

ਨਾਤਾ ਧੋਤਾ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

नाता धोता थाइ न पाई ॥

Naataa dhotaa thaai na paaee ||

His cleansings and washings will not be approved.

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

मुसलमानु करे वडिआई ॥

Musalamaanu kare vadiaaee ||

The Muslim glorifies his own faith.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੈ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

विणु गुर पीरै को थाइ न पाई ॥

Vi(nn)u gur peerai ko thaai na paaee ||

Without the Guru or a spiritual teacher, no one is accepted.

ਰਾਹੁ ਦਸਾਇ ਓਥੈ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

राहु दसाइ ओथै को जाइ ॥

Raahu dasaai othai ko jaai ||

They may be shown the way, but only a few go there.

ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

करणी बाझहु भिसति न पाइ ॥

Kara(nn)ee baajhahu bhisati na paai ||

Without the karma of good actions, heaven is not attained.

ਜੋਗੀ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦਸਾਈ ॥

जोगी कै घरि जुगति दसाई ॥

Jogee kai ghari jugati dasaaee ||

The Way of Yoga is demonstrated in the Yogi's monastery.

ਤਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕਨਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਈ ॥

तितु कारणि कनि मुंद्रा पाई ॥

Titu kaara(nn)i kani munddraa paaee ||

They wear ear-rings to show the way.

ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਫਿਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

मुंद्रा पाइ फिरै संसारि ॥

Munddraa paai phirai sanssaari ||

Wearing ear-rings, they wander around the world.

ਜਿਥੈ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

जिथै किथै सिरजणहारु ॥

Jithai kithai siraja(nn)ahaaru ||

The Creator Lord is everywhere.

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਵਾਟਾਊ ॥

जेते जीअ तेते वाटाऊ ॥

Jete jeea tete vaataau ||

There are as many travelers as there are beings.

ਚੀਰੀ ਆਈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਕਾਊ ॥

चीरी आई ढिल न काऊ ॥

Cheeree aaee dhil na kaau ||

When one's death warrant is issued, there is no delay.

ਏਥੈ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥

एथै जाणै सु जाइ सिञाणै ॥

Ethai jaa(nn)ai su jaai si(ny)aa(nn)ai ||

One who knows the Lord here, realizes Him there as well.

ਹੋਰੁ ਫਕੜੁ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੈ ॥

होरु फकड़ु हिंदू मुसलमाणै ॥

Horu phaka(rr)u hinddoo musalamaa(nn)ai ||

Others, whether Hindu or Muslim, are just babbling.

ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभना का दरि लेखा होइ ॥

Sabhanaa kaa dari lekhaa hoi ||

Everyone's account is read in the Court of the Lord;

ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

करणी बाझहु तरै न कोइ ॥

Kara(nn)ee baajhahu tarai na koi ||

Without the karma of good actions, no one crosses over.

ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

सचो सचु वखाणै कोइ ॥

Sacho sachu vakhaa(nn)ai koi ||

One who speaks the True Name of the True Lord,

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗੈ ਪੁਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक अगै पुछ न होइ ॥२॥

Naanak agai puchh na hoi ||2||

O Nanak, is not called to account hereafter. ||2||

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਗੜੁ ॥

हरि का मंदरु आखीऐ काइआ कोटु गड़ु ॥

Hari kaa manddaru aakheeai kaaiaa kotu ga(rr)u ||

The fortress of the body is called the Mansion of the Lord.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜੁ ॥

अंदरि लाल जवेहरी गुरमुखि हरि नामु पड़ु ॥

Anddari laal javeharee guramukhi hari naamu pa(rr)u ||

The rubies and gems are found within it; the Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜੁ ॥

हरि का मंदरु सरीरु अति सोहणा हरि हरि नामु दिड़ु ॥

Hari kaa manddaru sareeru ati soha(nn)aa hari hari naamu di(rr)u ||

The body, the Mansion of the Lord, is very beautiful, when the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is implanted deep within.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਤ ਕੜੁ ॥

मनमुख आपि खुआइअनु माइआ मोह नित कड़ु ॥

Manamukh aapi khuaaianu maaiaa moh nit ka(rr)u ||

The self-willed manmukhs ruin themselves; they boil continuously in attachment to Maya.

ਸਭਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੧॥

सभना साहिबु एकु है पूरै भागि पाइआ जाई ॥११॥

Sabhanaa saahibu eku hai poorai bhaagi paaiaa jaaee ||11||

The One Lord is the Master of all. He is found only by perfect destiny. ||11||

ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੰਤ ਫਿਰਹਿ ॥

ना सति दुखीआ ना सति सुखीआ ना सति पाणी जंत फिरहि ॥

Naa sati dukheeaa naa sati sukheeaa naa sati paa(nn)ee jantt phirahi ||

There is no Truth in suffering, there is no Truth in comfort. There is no Truth in wandering like animals through the water.

ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁਡਾਈ ਕੇਸੀ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਪੜਿਆ ਦੇਸ ਫਿਰਹਿ ॥

ना सति मूंड मुडाई केसी ना सति पड़िआ देस फिरहि ॥

Naa sati moondd mudaaee kesee naa sati pa(rr)iaa des phirahi ||

There is no Truth in shaving one's head; there is no Truth is studying the scriptures or wandering in foreign lands.

ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਰੁਖੀ ਬਿਰਖੀ ਪਥਰ ਆਪੁ ਤਛਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਹਿ ॥

ना सति रुखी बिरखी पथर आपु तछावहि दुख सहहि ॥

Naa sati rukhee birakhee pathar aapu tachhaavahi dukh sahahi ||

There is no Truth in trees, plants or stones, in mutilating oneself or suffering in pain.

ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਹਸਤੀ ਬਧੇ ਸੰਗਲ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਗਾਈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ॥

ना सति हसती बधे संगल ना सति गाई घाहु चरहि ॥

Naa sati hasatee badhe sanggal naa sati gaaee ghaahu charahi ||

There is no Truth in binding elephants in chains; there is no Truth in grazing cows.

ਜਿਸੁ ਹਥਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਜੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੈ ॥

जिसु हथि सिधि देवै जे सोई जिस नो देइ तिसु आइ मिलै ॥

Jisu hathi sidhi devai je soee jis no dei tisu aai milai ||

He alone grants it, whose hands hold spiritual perfection; he alone receives it, unto whom it is given.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵੈ ॥

नानक ता कउ मिलै वडाई जिसु घट भीतरि सबदु रवै ॥

Naanak taa kau milai vadaaee jisu ghat bheetari sabadu ravai ||

O Nanak, he alone is blessed with glorious greatness, whose heart is filled with the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਭਿ ਘਟ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਉ ਸਭਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਖੁਆਈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਹੈ ॥

सभि घट मेरे हउ सभना अंदरि जिसहि खुआई तिसु कउणु कहै ॥

Sabhi ghat mere hau sabhanaa anddari jisahi khuaaee tisu kau(nn)u kahai ||

God says, all hearts are mine, and I am in all hearts. Who can explain this to one who is confused?

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਲਾ ਵਾਟੜੀ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥

जिसहि दिखाला वाटड़ी तिसहि भुलावै कउणु ॥

Jisahi dikhaalaa vaata(rr)ee tisahi bhulaavai kau(nn)u ||

Who can confuse that being, unto whom I have shown the Way?

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਪੰਧ ਸਿਰਿ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥੧॥

जिसहि भुलाई पंध सिरि तिसहि दिखावै कउणु ॥१॥

Jisahi bhulaaee panddh siri tisahi dikhaavai kau(nn)u ||1||

And who can show the Path to that being whom I have confused since the beginning of time? ||1||

First Mehl:

ਸੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜੋ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰੈ ॥

सो गिरही जो निग्रहु करै ॥

So girahee jo nigrhu karai ||

He alone is a householder, who restrains his passions

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਕਰੈ ॥

जपु तपु संजमु भीखिआ करै ॥

Japu tapu sanjjamu bheekhiaa karai ||

And begs for meditation, austerity and self-discipline.

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥

पुंन दान का करे सरीरु ॥

Punn daan kaa kare sareeru ||

He gives donations to charity with his body;

ਸੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਗੰਗਾ ਕਾ ਨੀਰੁ ॥

सो गिरही गंगा का नीरु ॥

So girahee ganggaa kaa neeru ||

Such a householder is as pure as the water of the Ganges.

ਬੋਲੈ ਈਸਰੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

बोलै ईसरु सति सरूपु ॥

Bolai eesaru sati saroopu ||

Says Eeshar, the Lord is the embodiment of Truth.

ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੨॥

परम तंत महि रेख न रूपु ॥२॥

Param tantt mahi rekh na roopu ||2||

The supreme essence of reality has no shape or form. ||2||

ਸੋ ਅਉਧੂਤੀ ਜੋ ਧੂਪੈ ਆਪੁ ॥

सो अउधूती जो धूपै आपु ॥

So audhootee jo dhoopai aapu ||

He alone is a detached hermit, who burns away his self-conceit.

ਭਿਖਿਆ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥

भिखिआ भोजनु करै संतापु ॥

Bhikhiaa bhojanu karai santtaapu ||

He begs for suffering as his food.

ਅਉਹਠ ਪਟਣ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਕਰੈ ॥

अउहठ पटण महि भीखिआ करै ॥

Auhath pata(nn) mahi bheekhiaa karai ||

In the city of the heart, he begs for charity.

ਸੋ ਅਉਧੂਤੀ ਸਿਵ ਪੁਰਿ ਚੜੈ ॥

सो अउधूती सिव पुरि चड़ै ॥

So audhootee siv puri cha(rr)ai ||

Such a renunciate ascends to the City of God.

ਬੋਲੈ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

बोलै गोरखु सति सरूपु ॥

Bolai gorakhu sati saroopu ||

Says Gorakh, God is the embodiment of Truth;

ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੩॥

परम तंत महि रेख न रूपु ॥३॥

सो उदासी जि पाले उदासु ॥

So udaasee ji paale udaasu ||

He alone is an Udasi, a shaven-headed renunciate, who embraces renunciation.

ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

अरध उरध करे निरंजन वासु ॥

Aradh uradh kare niranjjan vaasu ||

He sees the Immaculate Lord dwelling in both the upper and lower regions.

ਚੰਦ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੀ ਪਾਏ ਗੰਢਿ ॥

चंद सूरज की पाए गंढि ॥

Chandd sooraj kee paae ganddhi ||

He balances the sun and the moon energies.

ਤਿਸੁ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਕਾ ਪੜੈ ਨ ਕੰਧੁ ॥

तिसु उदासी का पड़ै न कंधु ॥

Tisu udaasee kaa pa(rr)ai na kanddhu ||

The body-wall of such an Udasi does not collapse.

ਬੋਲੈ ਗੋਪੀ ਚੰਦੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

बोलै गोपी चंदु सति सरूपु ॥

Bolai gopee chanddu sati saroopu ||

Says Gopi Chand, God is the embodiment of Truth;

ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੪॥

परम तंत महि रेख न रूपु ॥४॥

Param tantt mahi rekh na roopu ||4||

सो पाखंडी जि काइआ पखाले ॥

So paakhanddee ji kaaiaa pakhaale ||

He alone is a Paakhandi, who cleanses his body of filth.

ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਜਾਲੇ ॥

काइआ की अगनि ब्रहमु परजाले ॥

Kaaiaa kee agani brhamu parajaale ||

The fire of his body illuminates God within.

ਸੁਪਨੈ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਝਰਣਾ ॥

सुपनै बिंदु न देई झरणा ॥

Supanai binddu na deee jhara(nn)aa ||

He does not waste his energy in wet dreams.

ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਜਰਾ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

तिसु पाखंडी जरा न मरणा ॥

Tisu paakhanddee jaraa na mara(nn)aa ||

Such a Paakhandi does not grow old or die.

ਬੋਲੈ ਚਰਪਟੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

बोलै चरपटु सति सरूपु ॥

Bolai charapatu sati saroopu ||

Says Charpat, God is the embodiment of Truth;

ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੫॥

परम तंत महि रेख न रूपु ॥५॥

Param tantt mahi rekh na roopu ||5||

The supreme essence of reality has no shape or form. ||5||

ਸੋ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਉਲਟੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥

सो बैरागी जि उलटे ब्रहमु ॥

So bairaagee ji ulate brhamu ||

He alone is a Bairaagi, who turns himself toward God.

ਗਗਨ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਪੈ ਥੰਮੁ ॥

गगन मंडल महि रोपै थमु ॥

Gagan manddal mahi ropai thammu ||

In the Tenth Gate, the sky of the mind, he erects his pillar.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥

अहिनिसि अंतरि रहै धिआनि ॥

Ahinisi anttari rahai dhiaani ||

Night and day, he remains in deep inner meditation.

ਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਤ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥

ते बैरागी सत समानि ॥

Te bairaagee sat samaani ||

Such a Bairaagi is just like the True Lord.

ਬੋਲੈ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

बोलै भरथरि सति सरूपु ॥

Bolai bharathari sati saroopu ||

Says Bhart'har, God is the embodiment of Truth;

ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੬॥

परम तंत महि रेख न रूपु ॥६॥

ਕਿਉ ਮਰੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵੈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ॥

Kiu marai manddaa kiu jeevai jugati ||

How is evil eradicated? How can the true way of life be found?

ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੁਗਤਿ ॥

कंन पड़ाइ किआ खाजै भुगति ॥

Kann pa(rr)aai kiaa khaajai bhugati ||

What is the use of piercing the ears, or begging for food?

ਆਸਤਿ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥

आसति नासति एको नाउ ॥

Aasati naasati eko naau ||

Throughout existence and non-existence, there is only the Name of the One Lord.

ਕਉਣੁ ਸੁ ਅਖਰੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਹਿਆਉ ॥

कउणु सु अखरु जितु रहै हिआउ ॥

Kau(nn)u su akharu jitu rahai hiaau ||

What is that Word, which holds the heart in its place?

ਧੂਪ ਛਾਵ ਜੇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਸਹੈ ॥

धूप छाव जे सम करि सहै ॥

Dhoop chhaav je sam kari sahai ||

When you look alike upon sunshine and shade,

ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥

ता नानकु आखै गुरु को कहै ॥

Taa naanaku aakhai guru ko kahai ||

Says Nanak, then the Guru will speak to you.

ਛਿਅ ਵਰਤਾਰੇ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥

छिअ वरतारे वरतहि पूत ॥

Chhia varataare varatahi poot ||

The students follow the six systems.

ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਨਾ ਅਉਧੂਤ ॥

ना संसारी ना अउधूत ॥

Naa sanssaaree naa audhoot ||

They are neither worldly people, nor detached renunciates.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਿ ਜੋ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

निरंकारि जो रहै समाइ ॥

Nirankkaari jo rahai samaai ||

One who remains absorbed in the Formless Lord

ਕਾਹੇ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥

काहे भीखिआ मंगणि जाइ ॥७॥

Kaahe bheekhiaa mangga(nn)i jaai ||7||

- why should he go out begging? ||7||

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸੋਈ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਥਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

Hari manddaru soee aakheeai jithahu hari jaataa ||

That alone is said to be the Lord's temple, where the Lord is known.

ਮਾਨਸ ਦੇਹ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥

मानस देह गुर बचनी पाइआ सभु आतम रामु पछाता ॥

Maanas deh gur bachanee paaiaa sabhu aatam raamu pachhaataa ||

In the human body, the Guru's Word is found, when one understands that the Lord, the Supreme Soul, is in all.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਖੋਜੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥

बाहरि मूलि न खोजीऐ घर माहि बिधाता ॥

Baahari mooli na khojeeai ghar maahi bidhaataa ||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤਿਨੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥

मनमुख हरि मंदर की सार न जाणनी तिनी जनमु गवाता ॥

Manamukh hari manddar kee saar na jaa(nn)anee tinee janamu gavaataa ||

The self-willed manmukh does not appreciate the value of the Lord's temple; they waste away and lose their lives.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਇਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੨॥

सभ महि इकु वरतदा गुर सबदी पाइआ जाई ॥१२॥

Sabh mahi iku varatadaa gur sabadee paaiaa jaaee ||12||

The One Lord is pervading in all; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He can be found. ||12||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਹਣਾ ॥

मूरखु होवै सो सुणै मूरख का कहणा ॥

Moorakhu hovai so su(nn)ai moorakh kaa kaha(nn)aa ||

Only a fool listens to the words of the fool.

ਮੂਰਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਆ ਲਖਣ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਾ ਕਰਣਾ ॥

मूरख के किआ लखण है किआ मूरख का करणा ॥

Moorakh ke kiaa lakha(nn) hai kiaa moorakh kaa kara(nn)aa ||

What are the signs of the fool? What does the fool do?

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਓਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਹੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੇ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

मूरखु ओहु जि मुगधु है अहंकारे मरणा ॥

Moorakhu ohu ji mugadhu hai ahankkaare mara(nn)aa ||

A fool is stupid; he dies of egotism.

ਏਤੁ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਖ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

एतु कमाणै सदा दुखु दुख ही महि रहणा ॥

Etu kamaa(nn)ai sadaa dukhu dukh hee mahi raha(nn)aa ||

His actions always bring him pain; he lives in pain.

ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪਵੈ ਖੂਹਿ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣਾ ॥

अति पिआरा पवै खूहि किहु संजमु करणा ॥

Ati piaaraa pavai khoohi kihu sanjjamu kara(nn)aa ||

If someone's beloved friend falls into the pit, what can be used to pull him out?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਓਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

गुरमुखि होइ सु करे वीचारु ओसु अलिपतो रहणा ॥

Guramukhi hoi su kare veechaaru osu alipato raha(nn)aa ||

One who becomes Gurmukh contemplates the Lord, and remains detached.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਆਪਿ ਉਧਰੈ ਓਸੁ ਪਿਛੈ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਭੀ ਤਰਣਾ ॥

हरि नामु जपै आपि उधरै ओसु पिछै डुबदे भी तरणा ॥

Hari naamu japai aapi udharai osu pichhai dubade bhee tara(nn)aa ||

Chanting the Lord's Name, he saves himself, and he carries across those who are drowning as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੁ ਸਹਣਾ ॥੧॥

नानक जो तिसु भावै सो करे जो देइ सु सहणा ॥१॥

Naanak jo tisu bhaavai so kare jo dei su saha(nn)aa ||1||

O Nanak, he acts in accordance with the Will of God; he endures whatever he is given. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਿਖ ਸਹੀ ॥

नानकु आखै रे मना सुणीऐ सिख सही ॥

Naanaku aakhai re manaa su(nn)eeai sikh sahee ||

Says Nanak, listen, O mind, to the True Teachings.

ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਕਢਿ ਵਹੀ ॥

लेखा रबु मंगेसीआ बैठा कढि वही ॥

Lekhaa rabu manggeseeaa baithaa kadhi vahee ||

Opening His ledger, God will call you to account.

ਤਲਬਾ ਪਉਸਨਿ ਆਕੀਆ ਬਾਕੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਰਹੀ ॥

तलबा पउसनि आकीआ बाकी जिना रही ॥

Talabaa pausani aakeeaa baakee jinaa rahee ||

Those rebels who have unpaid accounts shall be called out.

ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਹੋਸੀ ਆਇ ਤਈ ॥

अजराईलु फरेसता होसी आइ तई ॥

Ajaraaeelu pharesataa hosee aai taee ||

Azraa-eel, the Angel of Death, shall be appointed to punish them.

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਭੀੜੀ ਗਲੀ ਫਹੀ ॥

आवणु जाणु न सुझई भीड़ी गली फही ॥

Aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u na sujhaee bhee(rr)ee galee phahee ||

They will find no way to escape coming and going in reincarnation; they are trapped in the narrow path.

ਕੂੜ ਨਿਖੁਟੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਓੜਕਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੀ ॥੨॥

कूड़ निखुटे नानका ओड़कि सचि रही ॥२॥

Koo(rr) nikhute naanakaa o(rr)aki sachi rahee ||2||

Falsehood will come to an end, O Nanak, and Truth will prevail in the end. ||2||

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥

हरि का सभु सरीरु है हरि रवि रहिआ सभु आपै ॥

Hari kaa sabhu sareeru hai hari ravi rahiaa sabhu aapai ||

The body and everything belongs to the Lord; the Lord Himself is all-pervading.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

हरि की कीमति ना पवै किछु कहणु न जापै ॥

Hari kee keemati naa pavai kichhu kaha(nn)u na jaapai ||

The Lord's value cannot be estimated; nothing can be said about it.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਪੈ ॥

गुर परसादी सालाहीऐ हरि भगती रापै ॥

Gur parasaadee saalaaheeai hari bhagatee raapai ||

By Guru's Grace, one praises the Lord, imbued with feelings of devotion.

ਸਭੁ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਗਵਾਪੈ ॥

सभु मनु तनु हरिआ होइआ अहंकारु गवापै ॥

Sabhu manu tanu hariaa hoiaa ahankkaaru gavaapai ||

The mind and body are totally rejuvenated, and egotism is eradicated.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੩॥

सभु किछु हरि का खेलु है गुरमुखि किसै बुझाई ॥१३॥

Sabhu kichhu hari kaa khelu hai guramukhi kisai bujhaaee ||13||

Everything is the play of the Lord. The Gurmukh understands this. ||13||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਹੰਸਰ ਦਾਨ ਦੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੁ ਰੋਆਇਆ ॥

सहंसर दान दे इंद्रु रोआइआ ॥

Sahanssar daan de ianddru roaaiaa ||

Branded with a thousand marks of disgrace, Indra cried in shame.

ਪਰਸ ਰਾਮੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

परस रामु रोवै घरि आइआ ॥

Paras raamu rovai ghari aaiaa ||

Paras Raam returned home crying.

ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਖਾਇ ॥

अजै सु रोवै भीखिआ खाइ ॥

Ajai su rovai bheekhiaa khaai ||

Ajai cried and wept, when he was made to eat the manure he had given, pretending it was charity.

ਐਸੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

ऐसी दरगह मिलै सजाइ ॥

Aisee daragah milai sajaai ||

Such is the punishment received in the Court of the Lord.

ਰੋਵੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਿਕਾਲਾ ਭਇਆ ॥

रोवै रामु निकाला भइआ ॥

Rovai raamu nikaalaa bhaiaa ||

Rama wept when he was sent into exile,

ਸੀਤਾ ਲਖਮਣੁ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

सीता लखमणु विछुड़ि गइआ ॥

Seetaa lakhama(nn)u vichhu(rr)i gaiaa ||

And separated from Sita and Lakhshman.

ਰੋਵੈ ਦਹਸਿਰੁ ਲੰਕ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

रोवै दहसिरु लंक गवाइ ॥

Rovai dahasiru lankk gavaai ||

The ten-headed Raawan wept when he lost Sri Lanka,

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੀਤਾ ਆਦੀ ਡਉਰੂ ਵਾਇ ॥

जिनि सीता आदी डउरू वाइ ॥

Jini seetaa aadee dauroo vaai ||

but he stole away Sita with the beat of his tambourine.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਂਡਵ ਭਏ ਮਜੂਰ ॥

रोवहि पांडव भए मजूर ॥

Rovahi paandav bhae majoor ||

The Paandavas were made slaves, and wept,

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਹਤ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥

जिन कै सुआमी रहत हदूरि ॥

Jin kai suaamee rahat hadoori ||

but they once lived in the Presence of the Lord.

ਰੋਵੈ ਜਨਮੇਜਾ ਖੁਇ ਗਇਆ ॥

रोवै जनमेजा खुइ गइआ ॥

Rovai janamejaa khui gaiaa ||

Janmayjaa wept, that he had lost his way.

ਏਕੀ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਪੀ ਭਇਆ ॥

एकी कारणि पापी भइआ ॥

Ekee kaara(nn)i paapee bhaiaa ||

One mistake, and he became a sinner.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ਮਸਾਇਕ ਪੀਰ ॥

रोवहि सेख मसाइक पीर ॥

Rovahi sekh masaaik peer ||

The Shaykhs, Pirs and spiritual teachers weep;

ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੀੜ ॥

अंति कालि मतु लागै भीड़ ॥

Antti kaali matu laagai bhee(rr) ||

At the very last instant, they suffer in agony.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਇ ॥

रोवहि राजे कंन पड़ाइ ॥

Rovahi raaje kann pa(rr)aai ||

The kings weep - their ears are cut;

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

घरि घरि मागहि भीखिआ जाइ ॥

Ghari ghari maagahi bheekhiaa jaai ||

They go begging from house to house.

ਰੋਵਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

रोवहि किरपन संचहि धनु जाइ ॥

Rovahi kirapan sancchahi dhanu jaai ||

The miser weeps; he has to leave behind the wealth he has gathered.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

पंडित रोवहि गिआनु गवाइ ॥

Panddit rovahi giaanu gavaai ||

The Pandit, the religious scholar, weeps when his learning is gone.

ਬਾਲੀ ਰੋਵੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥

बाली रोवै नाहि भतारु ॥

Baalee rovai naahi bhataaru ||

The young woman weeps because she has no husband.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

नानक दुखीआ सभु संसारु ॥

Naanak dukheeaa sabhu sanssaaru ||

O Nanak, the whole world is suffering.

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

मंने नाउ सोई जिणि जाइ ॥

Manne naau soee ji(nn)i jaai ||

He alone is victorious, who believes in the Lord's Name.

ਅਉਰੀ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

अउरी करम न लेखै लाइ ॥१॥

Auree karam na lekhai laai ||1||

No other action is of any account. ||1||

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਅਵਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ਸਭਿ ਬਾਦਿ ॥

जपु तपु सभु किछु मंनिऐ अवरि कारा सभि बादि ॥

Japu tapu sabhu kichhu manniai avari kaaraa sabhi baadi ||

Meditation, austerity and everything come through belief in the Lord's Name. All other actions are useless.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥੨॥

नानक मंनिआ मंनीऐ बुझीऐ गुर परसादि ॥२॥

Naanak manniaa manneeai bujheeai gur parasaadi ||2||

O Nanak, believe in the One who is worth believing in. By Guru's Grace, he is realized. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

काइआ हंस धुरि मेलु करतै लिखि पाइआ ॥

Kaaiaa hanss dhuri melu karatai likhi paaiaa ||

The union of the body and the soul-swan was pre-ordained by the Creator Lord.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਇਆ ॥

सभ महि गुपतु वरतदा गुरमुखि प्रगटाइआ ॥

Sabh mahi gupatu varatadaa guramukhi prgataaiaa ||

He is hidden, and yet pervading all. He is revealed to the Gurmukh.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

गुण गावै गुण उचरै गुण माहि समाइआ ॥

Gu(nn) gaavai gu(nn) ucharai gu(nn) maahi samaaiaa ||

Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and chanting His Praises, one merges in His Glories.

ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥

सची बाणी सचु है सचु मेलि मिलाइआ ॥

Sachee baa(nn)ee sachu hai sachu meli milaaiaa ||

True is the True Word of the Guru's Bani. One unites in Union with the True Lord.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੪॥

सभु किछु आपे आपि है आपे देइ वडिआई ॥१४॥

Sabhu kichhu aape aapi hai aape dei vadiaaee ||14||

He Himself is everything; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||14||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਰਤਨਾ ਪਰਖਣ ਜਾਇ ॥

नानक अंधा होइ कै रतना परखण जाइ ॥

Naanak anddhaa hoi kai ratanaa parakha(nn) jaai ||

O Nanak, the blind man may go to appraise the jewels,

ਰਤਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਆਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਲਖਾਇ ॥੧॥

रतना सार न जाणई आवै आपु लखाइ ॥१॥

Ratanaa saar na jaa(nn)aee aavai aapu lakhaai ||1||

But he will not know their value; he will return home after exposing his ignorance. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਰਤਨਾ ਕੇਰੀ ਗੁਥਲੀ ਰਤਨੀ ਖੋਲੀ ਆਇ ॥

रतना केरी गुथली रतनी खोली आइ ॥

Ratanaa keree guthalee ratanee kholee aai ||

The Jeweler has come, and opened up the bag of jewels.

ਵਖਰ ਤੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਦੁਹਾ ਰਹੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

वखर तै वणजारिआ दुहा रही समाइ ॥

Vakhar tai va(nn)ajaariaa duhaa rahee samaai ||

The merchandise and the merchant are merged together.

ਜਿਨ ਗੁਣੁ ਪਲੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਾਣਕ ਵਣਜਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥

जिन गुणु पलै नानका माणक वणजहि सेइ ॥

Jin gu(nn)u palai naanakaa maa(nn)ak va(nn)ajahi sei ||

They alone purchase the gem, O Nanak, who have virtue in their purse.

ਰਤਨਾ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਅੰਧੇ ਵਤਹਿ ਲੋਇ ॥੨॥

रतना सार न जाणनी अंधे वतहि लोइ ॥२॥

Ratanaa saar na jaa(nn)anee anddhe vatahi loi ||2||

Those who do not appreciate the value of the jewels, wander like blind men in the world. ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਦਸਵੈ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਖੀਜੈ ॥

नउ दरवाजे काइआ कोटु है दसवै गुपतु रखीजै ॥

Nau daravaaje kaaiaa kotu hai dasavai gupatu rakheejai ||

The fortress of the body has nine gates; the tenth gate is kept hidden.

ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਨ ਖੁਲਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਖੁਲੀਜੈ ॥

बजर कपाट न खुलनी गुर सबदि खुलीजै ॥

Bajar kapaat na khulanee gur sabadi khuleejai ||

The rigid door is not open; only through the Word of the Guru's Shabad can it be opened.

ਅਨਹਦ ਵਾਜੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਵਜਦੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ॥

अनहद वाजे धुनि वजदे गुर सबदि सुणीजै ॥

Anahad vaaje dhuni vajade gur sabadi su(nn)eejai ||

The unstruck sound current resounds and vibrates there. The Word of the Guru's Shabad is heard.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਜੈ ॥

तितु घट अंतरि चानणा करि भगति मिलीजै ॥

Titu ghat anttari chaana(nn)aa kari bhagati mileejai ||

Deep within the nucleus of the heart, the Divine Light shines forth. Through devotional worship, one meets the Lord.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਰਚਨ ਰਚਾਈ ॥੧੫॥

सभ महि एकु वरतदा जिनि आपे रचन रचाई ॥१५॥

Sabh mahi eku varatadaa jini aape rachan rachaaee ||15||

The One Lord is pervading and permeating all. He Himself created the creation. ||15||

ਅੰਧੇ ਕੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਦਸਿਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

अंधे कै राहि दसिऐ अंधा होइ सु जाइ ॥

Anddhe kai raahi dasiai anddhaa hoi su jaai ||

He is truly blind, who follows the way shown by the blind man.

ਹੋਇ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

होइ सुजाखा नानका सो किउ उझड़ि पाइ ॥

Hoi sujaakhaa naanakaa so kiu ujha(rr)i paai ||

O Nanak, why should the one who can see, get lost?

ਅੰਧੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਜਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਇਣ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

अंधे एहि न आखीअनि जिन मुखि लोइण नाहि ॥

Anddhe ehi na aakheeani jin mukhi loi(nn) naahi ||

Do not call them blind, who have no eyes in their face.

ਅੰਧੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਖਸਮਹੁ ਘੁਥੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

अंधे सेई नानका खसमहु घुथे जाहि ॥१॥

Anddhe seee naanakaa khasamahu ghuthe jaahi ||1||

They alone are blind, O Nanak, who wander away from their Lord and Master. ||1||

Saahibi anddhaa jo keeaa kare sujaakhaa hoi ||

One whom the Lord has made blind - the Lord can make him see again.

ਜੇਹਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਹੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

जेहा जाणै तेहो वरतै जे सउ आखै कोइ ॥

Jehaa jaa(nn)ai teho varatai je sau aakhai koi ||

He acts only as he knows, although he may be spoken to a hundred times.

ਜਿਥੈ ਸੁ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਉ ਜਾਣਿ ॥

जिथै सु वसतु न जापई आपे वरतउ जाणि ॥

Jithai su vasatu na jaapaee aape varatau jaa(nn)i ||

Where the real thing is not seen, self-conceit prevails there - know this well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਏ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ॥੨॥

नानक गाहकु किउ लए सकै न वसतु पछाणि ॥२॥

Naanak gaahaku kiu lae sakai na vasatu pachhaa(nn)i ||2||

O Nanak, how can the purchaser purchase the real thing, if he cannot recognize it? ||2||

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਧਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿ ਹੁਕਮਹੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

सो किउ अंधा आखीऐ जि हुकमहु अंधा होइ ॥

So kiu anddhaa aakheeai ji hukamahu anddhaa hoi ||

How can someone be called blind, if he was made blind by the Lord's Command?

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

नानक हुकमु न बुझई अंधा कहीऐ सोइ ॥३॥

Naanak hukamu na bujhaee anddhaa kaheeai soi ||3||

O Nanak, one who does not understand the Hukam of the Lord's Command should be called blind. ||3||

ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੜੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਸਭਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਦੇਸਾ ॥

काइआ अंदरि गड़ु कोटु है सभि दिसंतर देसा ॥

Kaaiaa anddari ga(rr)u kotu hai sabhi disanttar desaa ||

Deep within the body is the fortress of the Lord, and all lands and countries.

ਆਪੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਵੇਸਾ ॥

आपे ताड़ी लाईअनु सभ महि परवेसा ॥

Aape taa(rr)ee laaeeanu sabh mahi paravesaa ||

He Himself sits in primal, profound Samaadhi; He Himself is all-pervading.

ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਖੇਸਾ ॥

आपे स्रिसटि साजीअनु आपि गुपतु रखेसा ॥

Aape srisati saajeeanu aapi gupatu rakhesaa ||

He Himself created the Universe, and He Himself remains hidden within it.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਗਟੀਏਸਾ ॥

गुर सेवा ते जाणिआ सचु परगटीएसा ॥

Gur sevaa te jaa(nn)iaa sachu paragateeesaa ||

Serving the Guru, the Lord is known, and the Truth is revealed.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੬॥

सभु किछु सचो सचु है गुरि सोझी पाई ॥१६॥

Sabhu kichhu sacho sachu hai guri sojhee paaee ||16||

He is True, the Truest of the True; the Guru has imparted this understanding. ||16||

ਸਾਵਣੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਅਹਾੜੁ ਦਿਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਦੁਇ ਖੇਤ ॥

सावणु राति अहाड़ु दिहु कामु क्रोधु दुइ खेत ॥

Saava(nn)u raati ahaa(rr)u dihu kaamu krodhu dui khet ||

Night is the summer season, and day is the winter season; sexual desire and anger are the two fields planted.

ਲਬੁ ਵਤ੍ਰ ਦਰੋਗੁ ਬੀਉ ਹਾਲੀ ਰਾਹਕੁ ਹੇਤ ॥

लबु वत्र दरोगु बीउ हाली राहकु हेत ॥

Labu vatr darogu beeu haalee raahaku het ||

Greed prepares the soil, and the seed of falsehood is planted; attachment and love are the farmer and hired hand.

ਹਲੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਣ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਖਟੇ ਖਾਇ ॥

हलु बीचारु विकार मण हुकमी खटे खाइ ॥

Halu beechaaru vikaar ma(nn) hukamee khate khaai ||

Contemplation is the plow, and corruption is the harvest; this is what one earns and eats, according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਅਉਤੁ ਜਣੇਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक लेखै मंगिऐ अउतु जणेदा जाइ ॥१॥

Naanak lekhai manggiai autu ja(nn)edaa jaai ||1||

O Nanak, when one is called to give his account, he will be barren and infertile. ||1||

ਭਉ ਭੁਇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਬਲੇਦ ॥

Bhau bhui pavitu paa(nn)ee satu santtokhu baled ||

Make the Fear of God the farm, purity the water, truth and contentment the cows and bulls,

ਹਲੁ ਹਲੇਮੀ ਹਾਲੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੇਤਾ ਵਤ੍ਰ ਵਖਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥

हलु हलेमी हाली चितु चेता वत्र वखत संजोगु ॥

Halu halemee haalee chitu chetaa vatr vakhat sanjjogu ||

Humility the plow, consciousness the plowman, remembrance the preparation of the soil, and union with the Lord the planting time.

ਨਾਉ ਬੀਜੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਬੋਹਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਗਲ ਦਰੋਗ ॥

नाउ बीजु बखसीस बोहल दुनीआ सगल दरोग ॥

Naau beeju bakhasees bohal duneeaa sagal darog ||

Let the Lord's Name be the seed, and His Forgiving Grace the harvest. Do this, and the whole world will seem false.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਜੋਗ ॥੨॥

नानक नदरी करमु होइ जावहि सगल विजोग ॥२॥

Naanak nadaree karamu hoi jaavahi sagal vijog ||2||

O Nanak, if He bestows His Merciful Glance of Grace, then all your separation will be ended. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

मनमुखि मोहु गुबारु है दूजै भाइ बोलै ॥

Manamukhi mohu gubaaru hai doojai bhaai bolai ||

The self-willed manmukh is trapped in the darkness of emotional attachment; in the love of duality he speaks.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥

दूजै भाइ सदा दुखु है नित नीरु विरोलै ॥

Doojai bhaai sadaa dukhu hai nit neeru virolai ||

The love of duality brings pain forever; he churns the water endlessly.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੋਲੈ ॥

गुरमुखि नामु धिआईऐ मथि ततु कढोलै ॥

Guramukhi naamu dhiaaeeai mathi tatu kadholai ||

The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he churns, and obtains the essence of reality.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਧਾ ਟੋਲੈ ॥

अंतरि परगासु घटि चानणा हरि लधा टोलै ॥

Anttari paragaasu ghati chaana(nn)aa hari ladhaa tolai ||

The Divine Light illuminates his heart deep within; he seeks the Lord, and obtains Him.

ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਦਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੭॥

आपे भरमि भुलाइदा किछु कहणु न जाई ॥१७॥

Aape bharami bhulaaidaa kichhu kaha(nn)u na jaaee ||17||

He Himself deludes in doubt; no one can comment on this. ||17||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਇ ॥

नानक चिंता मति करहु चिंता तिस ही हेइ ॥

Naanak chinttaa mati karahu chinttaa tis hee hei ||

O Nanak, don't be anxious; the Lord will take care of you.

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਰੋਜੀ ਦੇਇ ॥

जल महि जंत उपाइअनु तिना भि रोजी देइ ॥

Jal mahi jantt upaaianu tinaa bhi rojee dei ||

He created the creatures in water, and He gives them their nourishment.

ਓਥੈ ਹਟੁ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

ओथै हटु न चलई ना को किरस करेइ ॥

Othai hatu na chalaee naa ko kiras karei ||

There are no stores open there, and no one farms there.

ਸਉਦਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥

सउदा मूलि न होवई ना को लए न देइ ॥

Saudaa mooli na hovaee naa ko lae na dei ||

No business is ever transacted there, and no one buys or sells.

ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਅ ਖਾਣਾ ਏਹੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

जीआ का आहारु जीअ खाणा एहु करेइ ॥

Jeeaa kaa aahaaru jeea khaa(nn)aa ehu karei ||

Animals eat other animals; this is what the Lord has given them as food.

ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਸਾਇਰਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

विचि उपाए साइरा तिना भि सार करेइ ॥

Vichi upaae saairaa tinaa bhi saar karei ||

He created them in the oceans, and He provides for them as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਇ ॥੧॥

नानक चिंता मत करहु चिंता तिस ही हेइ ॥१॥

Naanak chinttaa mat karahu chinttaa tis hee hei ||1||

O Nanak, don't be anxious; the Lord will take care of you. ||1||

Naanak ihu jeeu machhulee jheevaru trisanaa kaalu ||

O Nanak, this soul is the fish, and death is the hungry fisherman.

ਮਨੂਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਪੜੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥

मनूआ अंधु न चेतई पड़ै अचिंता जालु ॥

Manooaa anddhu na chetaee pa(rr)ai achinttaa jaalu ||

The blind man does not even think of this. And suddenly, the net is cast.

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

नानक चितु अचेतु है चिंता बधा जाइ ॥

Naanak chitu achetu hai chinttaa badhaa jaai ||

O Nanak, his consciousness is unconscious, and he departs, bound by anxiety.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

नदरि करे जे आपणी ता आपे लए मिलाइ ॥२॥

Nadari kare je aapa(nn)ee taa aape lae milaai ||2||

But if the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites the soul with Himself. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਾ ॥

से जन साचे सदा सदा जिनी हरि रसु पीता ॥

Se jan saache sadaa sadaa jinee hari rasu peetaa ||

They are true, forever true, who drink in the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ॥

गुरमुखि सचा मनि वसै सचु सउदा कीता ॥

Guramukhi sachaa mani vasai sachu saudaa keetaa ||

The True Lord abides in the mind of the Gurmukh; He strikes the true bargain.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਲੀਤਾ ॥

सभु किछु घर ही माहि है वडभागी लीता ॥

Sabhu kichhu ghar hee maahi hai vadabhaagee leetaa ||

Everything is in the home of the self within; only the very fortunate obtain it.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਤਾ ॥

अंतरि त्रिसना मरि गई हरि गुण गावीता ॥

Anttari trisanaa mari gaee hari gu(nn) gaaveetaa ||

The hunger within is conquered and overcome, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੮॥

आपे मेलि मिलाइअनु आपे देइ बुझाई ॥१८॥

Aape meli milaaianu aape dei bujhaaee ||18||

He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself blesses them with understanding. ||18||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

वेलि पिंञाइआ कति वुणाइआ ॥

Veli pin(ny)aaiaa kati vu(nn)aaiaa ||

The cotton is ginned, woven and spun;

ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥

कटि कुटि करि खु्मबि चड़ाइआ ॥

Kati kuti kari khumbbi cha(rr)aaiaa ||

The cloth is laid out, washed and bleached white.

ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥

लोहा वढे दरजी पाड़े सूई धागा सीवै ॥

Lohaa vadhe darajee paa(rr)e sooee dhaagaa seevai ||

The tailor cuts it with his scissors, and sews it with his thread.

ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥

इउ पति पाटी सिफती सीपै नानक जीवत जीवै ॥

Iu pati paatee siphatee seepai naanak jeevat jeevai ||

Thus, the torn and tattered honor is sewn up again, through the Lord's Praise, O Nanak, and one lives the true life.

ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥

होइ पुराणा कपड़ु पाटै सूई धागा गंढै ॥

Hoi puraa(nn)aa kapa(rr)u paatai sooee dhaagaa ganddhai ||

Becoming worn, the cloth is torn; with needle and thread it is sewn up again.

ਮਾਹੁ ਪਖੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੰਢੈ ॥

माहु पखु किहु चलै नाही घड़ी मुहतु किछु हंढै ॥

Maahu pakhu kihu chalai naahee gha(rr)ee muhatu kichhu handdhai ||

It will not last for a month, or even a week. It barely lasts for an hour, or even a moment.

ਸਚੁ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੀਤਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਪਾਟੈ ॥

सचु पुराणा होवै नाही सीता कदे न पाटै ॥

Sachu puraa(nn)aa hovai naahee seetaa kade na paatai ||

But the Truth does not grow old; and when it is stitched, it is never torn again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਪੀ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥

नानक साहिबु सचो सचा तिचरु जापी जापै ॥१॥

Naanak saahibu sacho sachaa ticharu jaapee jaapai ||1||

O Nanak, the Lord and Master is the Truest of the True. While we meditate on Him, we see Him. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਸਚ ਕੀ ਕਾਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

सच की काती सचु सभु सारु ॥

Sach kee kaatee sachu sabhu saaru ||

The knife is Truth, and its steel is totally True.

ਘਾੜਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

घाड़त तिस की अपर अपार ॥

Ghaa(rr)at tis kee apar apaar ||

Its workmanship is incomparably beautiful.

ਸਬਦੇ ਸਾਣ ਰਖਾਈ ਲਾਇ ॥

सबदे साण रखाई लाइ ॥

Sabade saa(nn) rakhaaee laai ||

It is sharpened on the grindstone of the Shabad.

ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਥੇਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

गुण की थेकै विचि समाइ ॥

Gu(nn) kee thekai vichi samaai ||

It is placed in the scabbard of virtue.

ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥

तिस दा कुठा होवै सेखु ॥

Tis daa kuthaa hovai sekhu ||

If the Shaykh is killed with that,

ਲੋਹੂ ਲਬੁ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥

लोहू लबु निकथा वेखु ॥

Lohoo labu nikathaa vekhu ||

Then the blood of greed will spill out.

ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਹਕਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

होइ हलालु लगै हकि जाइ ॥

Hoi halaalu lagai haki jaai ||

One who is slaughtered in this ritualistic way, will be attached to the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਦਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक दरि दीदारि समाइ ॥२॥

Naanak dari deedaari samaai ||2||

O Nanak, at the Lord's door, he is absorbed into His Blessed Vision. ||2||

ਕਮਰਿ ਕਟਾਰਾ ਬੰਕੁੜਾ ਬੰਕੇ ਕਾ ਅਸਵਾਰੁ ॥

कमरि कटारा बंकुड़ा बंके का असवारु ॥

Kamari kataaraa bankku(rr)aa bankke kaa asavaaru ||

A beautiful dagger hangs by your waist, and you ride such a beautiful horse.

ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਮਤੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

गरबु न कीजै नानका मतु सिरि आवै भारु ॥३॥

Garabu na keejai naanakaa matu siri aavai bhaaru ||3||

But don't be too proud; O Nanak, you may fall head first to the ground. ||3||

ਸੋ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਲੈ ॥

सो सतसंगति सबदि मिलै जो गुरमुखि चलै ॥

So satasanggati sabadi milai jo guramukhi chalai ||

They alone walk as Gurmukh, who receive the Shabad in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸੇ ਸਚੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ॥

सचु धिआइनि से सचे जिन हरि खरचु धनु पलै ॥

Sachu dhiaaini se sache jin hari kharachu dhanu palai ||

Meditating on the True Lord, they become truthful; they carry in their robes the supplies of the Lord's wealth.

ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਚਲੈ ॥

भगत सोहनि गुण गावदे गुरमति अचलै ॥

Bhagat sohani gu(nn) gaavade guramati achalai ||

The devotees look beautiful, singing the Praises of the Lord; following the Guru's Teachings, they become stable and unchanging.

ਰਤਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਲੈ ॥

रतन बीचारु मनि वसिआ गुर कै सबदि भलै ॥

Ratan beechaaru mani vasiaa gur kai sabadi bhalai ||

They enshrine the jewel of contemplation within their minds, and the most sublime Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧੯॥

आपे मेलि मिलाइदा आपे देइ वडिआई ॥१९॥

Aape meli milaaidaa aape dei vadiaaee ||19||

He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself grants glorious greatness. ||19||

Salok M: 3 ||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕੋਇ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

आसा अंदरि सभु को कोइ निरासा होइ ॥

Aasaa anddari sabhu ko koi niraasaa hoi ||

Everyone is filled with hope; hardly anyone is free of hope.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

नानक जो मरि जीविआ सहिला आइआ सोइ ॥१॥

Naanak jo mari jeeviaa sahilaa aaiaa soi ||1||

O Nanak, blessed is the birth of one, who remains dead while yet alive. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਸਾ ਹਥਿ ਹੈ ਕੇਉ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

ना किछु आसा हथि है केउ निरासा होइ ॥

Naa kichhu aasaa hathi hai keu niraasaa hoi ||

Nothing is in the hands of hope. How can one become free of hope?

ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਏਹ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਜਾਂ ਭੋੁਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

किआ करे एह बपुड़ी जां भोलाए सोइ ॥२॥

Kiaa kare eh bapu(rr)ee jaan bhaolaae soi ||2||

What can this poor being do? The Lord Himself creates confusion. ||2||

Pauree:

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ॥

ध्रिगु जीवणु संसार सचे नाम बिनु ॥

Dhrigu jeeva(nn)u sanssaar sache naam binu ||

Cursed is the life in this world, without the True Name.

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਨੁ ॥

प्रभु दाता दातार निहचलु एहु धनु ॥

Prbhu daataa daataar nihachalu ehu dhanu ||

God is the Great Giver of givers. His wealth is permanent and unchanging.

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਨੁ ॥

सासि सासि आराधे निरमलु सोइ जनु ॥

Saasi saasi aaraadhe niramalu soi janu ||

That humble being is immaculate, who worships the Lord with each and every breath.

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਅਗਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਏਕੁ ਭਨੁ ॥

अंतरजामी अगमु रसना एकु भनु ॥

Anttarajaamee agamu rasanaa eku bhanu ||

With your tongue, vibrate the One Inaccessible Lord, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਰਬਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੨੦॥

रवि रहिआ सरबति नानकु बलि जाई ॥२०॥

Ravi rahiaa sarabati naanaku bali jaaee ||20||

He is all-pervading everywhere. Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||20||

ਸਰਵਰ ਹੰਸ ਧੁਰੇ ਹੀ ਮੇਲਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ॥

सरवर हंस धुरे ही मेला खसमै एवै भाणा ॥

Saravar hanss dhure hee melaa khasamai evai bhaa(nn)aa ||

The union between the lake of the True Guru and the swan of the soul was pre-ordained from the very beginning, by the Pleasure of the Lord's Will.

ਸਰਵਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਮੋਤੀ ਸੋ ਹੰਸਾ ਕਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥

सरवर अंदरि हीरा मोती सो हंसा का खाणा ॥

Saravar anddari heeraa motee so hanssaa kaa khaa(nn)aa ||

The diamonds are in this lake; they are the food of the swans.

ਬਗੁਲਾ ਕਾਗੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

बगुला कागु न रहई सरवरि जे होवै अति सिआणा ॥

Bagulaa kaagu na rahaee saravari je hovai ati siaa(nn)aa ||

The cranes and the ravens may be very wise, but they do not remain in this lake.

ਓਨਾ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਨ ਪਇਓ ਓਥੈ ਓਨੑਾ ਹੋਰੋ ਖਾਣਾ ॥

ओना रिजकु न पइओ ओथै ओन्हा होरो खाणा ॥

Onaa rijaku na paio othai onhaa horo khaa(nn)aa ||

They do not find their food there; their food is different.

ਸਚਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਸਚੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜਾ ਮਾਣਾ ॥

सचि कमाणै सचो पाईऐ कूड़ै कूड़ा माणा ॥

Sachi kamaa(nn)ai sacho paaeeai koo(rr)ai koo(rr)aa maa(nn)aa ||

Practicing Truth, the True Lord is found. False is the pride of the false.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੌ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰੇ ਪੈਯਾ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ॥੧॥

नानक तिन कौ सतिगुरु मिलिआ जिना धुरे पैया परवाणा ॥१॥

Naanak tin kau satiguru miliaa jinaa dhure paiyaa paravaa(nn)aa ||1||

O Nanak, they alone meet the True Guru, who are so pre-destined by the Lord's Command. ||1||

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਉਜਲਾ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

साहिबु मेरा उजला जे को चिति करेइ ॥

Saahibu meraa ujalaa je ko chiti karei ||

My Lord and Master is immaculate, as are those who think of Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜੋ ਦੇਇ ॥

नानक सोई सेवीऐ सदा सदा जो देइ ॥

Naanak soee seveeai sadaa sadaa jo dei ||

O Nanak, serve Him, who gives to you forever and ever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

नानक सोई सेवीऐ जितु सेविऐ दुखु जाइ ॥

Naanak soee seveeai jitu seviai dukhu jaai ||

O Nanak, serve Him; by serving Him, sorrow is dispelled.

ਅਵਗੁਣ ਵੰਞਨਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਆਇ ॥੨॥

अवगुण वंञनि गुण रवहि मनि सुखु वसै आइ ॥२॥

Avagu(nn) van(ny)ani gu(nn) ravahi mani sukhu vasai aai ||2||

Faults and demerits vanish, and virtues take their place; peace comes to dwell in the mind. ||2||

Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥

आपे आपि वरतदा आपि ताड़ी लाईअनु ॥

Aape aapi varatadaa aapi taa(rr)ee laaeeanu ||

He Himself is all-pervading; He Himself is absorbed in the profound state of Samaadhi.

ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਤੀਆਈਅਨੁ ॥

आपे ही उपदेसदा गुरमुखि पतीआईअनु ॥

Aape hee upadesadaa guramukhi pateeaaeeanu ||

He Himself instructs; the Gurmukh is satisfied and fulfilled.

ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ॥

इकि आपे उझड़ि पाइअनु इकि भगती लाइअनु ॥

Iki aape ujha(rr)i paaianu iki bhagatee laaianu ||

Some, He causes to wander in the wilderness, while others are committed to His devotional worship.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ॥

जिसु आपि बुझाए सो बुझसी आपे नाइ लाईअनु ॥

Jisu aapi bujhaae so bujhasee aape naai laaeeanu ||

He alone understands, whom the Lord causes to understand; He Himself attaches mortals to His Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨੧॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ ॥

नानक नामु धिआईऐ सची वडिआई ॥२१॥१॥ सुधु ॥

Naanak naamu dhiaaeeai sachee vadiaaee ||21||1|| sudhu ||

O Nanak, meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, true greatness is obtained. ||21||1|| Sudh ||

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

ਜੈਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਤੈਸੋ ਹੀ ਮੈ ਡੀਠੁ ॥

जैसा सतिगुरु सुणीदा तैसो ही मै डीठु ॥

Jaisaa satiguru su(nn)eedaa taiso hee mai deethu ||

As I have heard of the True Guru, so I have seen Him.

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਾ ਬਸੀਠੁ ॥

विछुड़िआ मेले प्रभू हरि दरगह का बसीठु ॥

Vichhu(rr)iaa mele prbhoo hari daragah kaa baseethu ||

He re-unites the separated ones with God; He is the Mediator at the Court of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਦਾ ਕਟੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ॥

हरि नामो मंत्रु द्रिड़ाइदा कटे हउमै रोगु ॥

Hari naamo manttru dri(rr)aaidaa kate haumai rogu ||

He implants the Mantra of the Lord's Name, and eradicates the illness of egotism.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਧੁਰੇ ਪਇਆ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੧॥

नानक सतिगुरु तिना मिलाइआ जिना धुरे पइआ संजोगु ॥१॥

Naanak satiguru tinaa milaaiaa jinaa dhure paiaa sanjjogu ||1||

O Nanak, he alone meets the True Guru, who has such union pre-ordained. ||1||


ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehl:

ਇਕੁ ਸਜਣੁ ਸਭਿ ਸਜਣਾ ਇਕੁ ਵੈਰੀ ਸਭਿ ਵਾਦਿ ॥

इकु सजणु सभि सजणा इकु वैरी सभि वादि ॥

Iku saja(nn)u sabhi saja(nn)aa iku vairee sabhi vaadi ||

If the One Lord is my Friend, then all are my friends. If the One Lord is my enemy, then all fight with me.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਆ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਬਾਦਿ ॥

गुरि पूरै देखालिआ विणु नावै सभ बादि ॥

Guri poorai dekhaaliaa vi(nn)u naavai sabh baadi ||

The Perfect Guru has shown me that, without the Name, everything is useless.
