ਪਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ ॥

पउणु गुरू पाणी पिता माता धरति महतु ॥

Pau(nn)u guroo paa(nn)ee pitaa maataa dharati mahatu ||

Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother of all.

ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥

दिनसु राति दुइ दाई दाइआ खेलै सगल जगतु ॥

Dinasu raati dui daaee daaiaa khelai sagal jagatu ||

Day and night are the two nurses, in whose lap all the world is at play.

ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ਵਾਚੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥

चंगिआईआ बुरिआईआ वाचे धरमु हदूरि ॥

Changgiaaeeaa buriaaeeaa vaache dharamu hadoori ||

Good deeds and bad deeds-the record is read out in the Presence of the Lord of Dharma.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਕੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

करमी आपो आपणी के नेड़ै के दूरि ॥

Karamee aapo aapa(nn)ee ke ne(rr)ai ke doori ||

According to their own actions, some are drawn closer, and some are driven farther away.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗਏ ਮਸਕਤਿ ਘਾਲਿ ॥

जिनी नामु धिआइआ गए मसकति घालि ॥

Jinee naamu dhiaaiaa gae masakati ghaali ||

Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brow

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੇਤੀ ਛੁਟੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

नानक ते मुख उजले होर केती छुटी नालि ॥२॥

Naanak te mukh ujale hor ketee chhutee naali ||2||

-O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many others are saved along with them! ||2||

ਸਚਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦਸਿਆ ॥

सचा भोजनु भाउ सतिगुरि दसिआ ॥

Sachaa bhojanu bhaau satiguri dasiaa ||

The True Food is the Love of the Lord; the True Guru has spoken.

ਸਚੇ ਹੀ ਪਤੀਆਇ ਸਚਿ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ॥

सचे ही पतीआइ सचि विगसिआ ॥

Sache hee pateeaai sachi vigasiaa ||

With this True Food, I am satisfied, and with the Truth, I am delighted.

ਸਚੈ ਕੋਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਂਇ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥

सचै कोटि गिरांइ निज घरि वसिआ ॥

Sachai koti giraani nij ghari vasiaa ||

True are the cities and the villages, where one abides in the True Home of the self.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਨਾਉ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਰਹਸਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरि तुठै नाउ प्रेमि रहसिआ ॥

Satiguri tuthai naau premi rahasiaa ||

When the True Guru is pleased, one receives the Lord's Name, and blossoms forth in His Love.

ਸਚੈ ਦੈ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

सचै दै दीबाणि कूड़ि न जाईऐ ॥

Sachai dai deebaa(nn)i koo(rr)i na jaaeeai ||

No one enters the Court of the True Lord through falsehood.

ਝੂਠੋ ਝੂਠੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਸੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥

झूठो झूठु वखाणि सु महलु खुआईऐ ॥

Jhootho jhoothu vakhaa(nn)i su mahalu khuaaeeai ||

By uttering falsehood and only falsehood, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is lost.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

सचै सबदि नीसाणि ठाक न पाईऐ ॥

Sachai sabadi neesaa(nn)i thaak na paaeeai ||

No one blocks the way of those who are blessed with the Banner of the True Word of the Shabad.

ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੁਝਿ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥੧੮॥

सचु सुणि बुझि वखाणि महलि बुलाईऐ ॥१८॥

Sachu su(nn)i bujhi vakhaa(nn)i mahali bulaaeeai ||18||

Hearing, understanding and speaking Truth, one is called to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||18||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਪਹਿਰਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਹਿਵੈ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

पहिरा अगनि हिवै घरु बाधा भोजनु सारु कराई ॥

Pahiraa agani hivai gharu baadhaa bhojanu saaru karaaee ||

If I dressed myself in fire, and built my house of snow, and made iron my food;

ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹਾਕ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

सगले दूख पाणी करि पीवा धरती हाक चलाई ॥

Sagale dookh paa(nn)ee kari peevaa dharatee haak chalaaee ||

And if I were to drink in all pain like water, and drive the entire earth before me;

ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੀ ਅੰਬਰੁ ਤੋਲੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਟੰਕੁ ਚੜਾਈ ॥

धरि ताराजी अंबरु तोली पिछै टंकु चड़ाई ॥

Dhari taaraajee ambbaru tolee pichhai tankku cha(rr)aaee ||

And if I were to place the earth upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin;

ਏਵਡੁ ਵਧਾ ਮਾਵਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਸੈ ਨਥਿ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

एवडु वधा मावा नाही सभसै नथि चलाई ॥

Evadu vadhaa maavaa naahee sabhasai nathi chalaaee ||

And if I were to become so great that I could not be contained, and if I were to control and lead all;

ਏਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ਭਿ ਆਖਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

एता ताणु होवै मन अंदरि करी भि आखि कराई ॥

Etaa taa(nn)u hovai man anddari karee bhi aakhi karaaee ||

And if I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do my bidding-so what?

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਤੇਵਡ ਦਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਦੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

जेवडु साहिबु तेवड दाती दे दे करे रजाई ॥

Jevadu saahibu tevad daatee de de kare rajaaee ||

As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts. He bestows them according to His Will.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥

नानक नदरि करे जिसु उपरि सचि नामि वडिआई ॥१॥

Naanak nadari kare jisu upari sachi naami vadiaaee ||1||

O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1||


ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Second Mehl:

ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਰਜਿਆ ਸੁਨਣਿ ਨ ਰਜੇ ਕੰਨ ॥

आखणु आखि न रजिआ सुनणि न रजे कंन ॥

Aakha(nn)u aakhi na rajiaa suna(nn)i na raje kann ||

The mouth is not satisfied by speaking, and the ears are not satisfied by hearing.

ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨ ਰਜੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕ ਇਕ ਵੰਨ ॥

अखी देखि न रजीआ गुण गाहक इक वंन ॥

Akhee dekhi na rajeeaa gu(nn) gaahak ik vann ||

The eyes are not satisfied by seeing-each organ seeks out one sensory quality.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਲੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

भुखिआ भुख न उतरै गली भुख न जाइ ॥

Bhukhiaa bhukh na utarai galee bhukh na jaai ||

The hunger of the hungry is not appeased; by mere words, hunger is not relieved.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੁਖਾ ਤਾ ਰਜੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक भुखा ता रजै जा गुण कहि गुणी समाइ ॥२॥

Naanak bhukhaa taa rajai jaa gu(nn) kahi gu(nn)ee samaai ||2||

O Nanak, hunger is relieved only when one utters the Glorious Praises of the Praiseworthy Lord. ||2||

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

विणु सचे सभु कूड़ु कूड़ु कमाईऐ ॥

Vi(nn)u sache sabhu koo(rr)u koo(rr)u kamaaeeai ||

Without the True One, all are false, and all practice falsehood.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਬੰਨਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥

विणु सचे कूड़िआरु बंनि चलाईऐ ॥

Vi(nn)u sache koo(rr)iaaru banni chalaaeeai ||

Without the True One, the false ones are bound and gagged and driven off.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਛਾਰੁ ਰਲਾਈਐ ॥

विणु सचे तनु छारु छारु रलाईऐ ॥

Vi(nn)u sache tanu chhaaru chhaaru ralaaeeai ||

Without the True One, the body is just ashes, and it mingles again with ashes.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਭ ਭੁਖ ਜਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥

विणु सचे सभ भुख जि पैझै खाईऐ ॥

Vi(nn)u sache sabh bhukh ji paijhai khaaeeai ||

Without the True One, all food and clothes are unsatisfying.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਚੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

विणु सचे दरबारु कूड़ि न पाईऐ ॥

Vi(nn)u sache darabaaru koo(rr)i na paaeeai ||

Without the True One, the false ones do not attain the Lord's Court.

ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥

कूड़ै लालचि लगि महलु खुआईऐ ॥

Koo(rr)ai laalachi lagi mahalu khuaaeeai ||

Attached to false attachments, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is lost.

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਓ ਠਗਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

सभु जगु ठगिओ ठगि आईऐ जाईऐ ॥

Sabhu jagu thagio thagi aaeeai jaaeeai ||

The whole world is deceived by deception, coming and going in reincarnation.

ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥੧੯॥

तन महि त्रिसना अगि सबदि बुझाईऐ ॥१९॥

Tan mahi trisanaa agi sabadi bujhaaeeai ||19||

Within the body is the fire of desire; through the Word of the Shabad, it is quenched. ||19||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोक मः १ ॥

Salok M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਰੁਖੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

नानक गुरु संतोखु रुखु धरमु फुलु फल गिआनु ॥

Naanak guru santtokhu rukhu dharamu phulu phal giaanu ||

O Nanak, the Guru is the tree of contentment, with flowers of faith, and fruits of spiritual wisdom.

ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਪਕੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ॥

रसि रसिआ हरिआ सदा पकै करमि धिआनि ॥

Rasi rasiaa hariaa sadaa pakai karami dhiaani ||

Watered with the Lord's Love, it remains forever green; through the karma of good deeds and meditation, it ripens.

ਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਸਾਦ ਖਾਦਾ ਲਹੈ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

पति के साद खादा लहै दाना कै सिरि दानु ॥१॥

Pati ke saad khaadaa lahai daanaa kai siri daanu ||1||

Honor is obtained by eating this tasty dish; of all gifts, this is the greatest gift. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਸੁਇਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਪਤ ਪਰਵਾਲਾ ਫੁਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ॥

सुइने का बिरखु पत परवाला फुल जवेहर लाल ॥

Suine kaa birakhu pat paravaalaa phul javehar laal ||

The Guru is the tree of gold, with leaves of coral, and blossoms of jewels and rubies.

ਤਿਤੁ ਫਲ ਰਤਨ ਲਗਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਖਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥

तितु फल रतन लगहि मुखि भाखित हिरदै रिदै निहालु ॥

Titu phal ratan lagahi mukhi bhaakhit hiradai ridai nihaalu ||

The Words from His Mouth are fruits of jewels. Within His Heart, He beholds the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ॥

नानक करमु होवै मुखि मसतकि लिखिआ होवै लेखु ॥

Naanak karamu hovai mukhi masataki likhiaa hovai lekhu ||

O Nanak, He is obtained by those, upon whose faces and foreheads such pre-recorded destiny is written.

ਅਠਿਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਪੂਜੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥

अठिसठि तीरथ गुर की चरणी पूजै सदा विसेखु ॥

Athisathi teerath gur kee chara(nn)ee poojai sadaa visekhu ||

The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage are contained in the constant worship of the feet of the Exalted Guru.

ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਕੋਪੁ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਦੀਆ ਅਗਿ ॥

हंसु हेतु लोभु कोपु चारे नदीआ अगि ॥

Hanssu hetu lobhu kopu chaare nadeeaa agi ||

Cruelty, material attachment, greed and anger are the four rivers of fire.

ਪਵਹਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਲਗਿ ॥੨॥

पवहि दझहि नानका तरीऐ करमी लगि ॥२॥

Pavahi dajhahi naanakaa tareeai karamee lagi ||2||

Falling into them, one is burned, O Nanak! One is saved only by holding tight to good deeds. ||2||

ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ ॥

जीवदिआ मरु मारि न पछोताईऐ ॥

Jeevadiaa maru maari na pachhotaaeeai ||

While you are alive, conquer death, and you shall have no regrets in the end.

ਝੂਠਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥

झूठा इहु संसारु किनि समझाईऐ ॥

Jhoothaa ihu sanssaaru kini samajhaaeeai ||

This world is false, but only a few understand this.

ਸਚਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਈਐ ॥

सचि न धरे पिआरु धंधै धाईऐ ॥

Sachi na dhare piaaru dhanddhai dhaaeeai ||

People do not enshrine love for the Truth; they chase after worldly affairs instead.

ਕਾਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਖੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆਈਐ ॥

कालु बुरा खै कालु सिरि दुनीआईऐ ॥

Kaalu buraa khai kaalu siri duneeaaeeai ||

The terrible time of death and annihilation hovers over the heads of the world.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਦਾਈਐ ॥

हुकमी सिरि जंदारु मारे दाईऐ ॥

Hukamee siri janddaaru maare daaeeai ||

By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the Messenger of Death smashes his club over their heads.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥

आपे देइ पिआरु मंनि वसाईऐ ॥

Aape dei piaaru manni vasaaeeai ||

The Lord Himself gives His Love, and enshrines it within their minds.

ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਚਸਾ ਵਿਲੰਮੁ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

मुहतु न चसा विलमु भरीऐ पाईऐ ॥

Muhatu na chasaa vilammu bhareeai paaeeai ||

Not a moment or an instant's delay is permitted, when one's measure of life is full.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੦॥

गुर परसादी बुझि सचि समाईऐ ॥२०॥

Gur parasaadee bujhi sachi samaaeeai ||20||

By Guru's Grace, one comes to know the True One, and is absorbed into Him. ||20||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਤੁਮੀ ਤੁਮਾ ਵਿਸੁ ਅਕੁ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਨਿਮੁ ਫਲੁ ॥

तुमी तुमा विसु अकु धतूरा निमु फलु ॥

Tumee tumaa visu aku dhatooraa nimu phalu ||

Bitter melon, swallow-wort, thorn-apple and nim fruit

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੀ ॥

मनि मुखि वसहि तिसु जिसु तूं चिति न आवही ॥

Mani mukhi vasahi tisu jisu toonn chiti na aavahee ||

These bitter poisons lodge in the minds and mouths of those who do not remember You

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੰਢਨਿ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ॥੧॥

नानक कहीऐ किसु हंढनि करमा बाहरे ॥१॥

Naanak kaheeai kisu handdhani karamaa baahare ||1||

O Nanak, how shall I tell them this? Without the karma of good deeds, they are only destroying themselves. ||1||

ਮਤਿ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਕਬ ਉਤਮ ਕਬ ਨੀਚ ॥

मति पंखेरू किरतु साथि कब उतम कब नीच ॥

Mati pankkheroo kiratu saathi kab utam kab neech ||

The intellect is a bird; on account of its actions, it is sometimes high, and sometimes low.

ਕਬ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਕਬ ਅਕਿ ਡਾਲਿ ਕਬ ਉਚੀ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥

कब चंदनि कब अकि डालि कब उची परीति ॥

Kab chanddani kab aki daali kab uchee pareeti ||

Sometimes it is perched on the sandalwood tree, and sometimes it is on the branch of the poisonous swallow-wort. Sometimes, it soars through the heavens.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਲਗੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥

नानक हुकमि चलाईऐ साहिब लगी रीति ॥२॥

Naanak hukami chalaaeeai saahib lagee reeti ||2||

O Nanak, our Lord and Master leads us on, according to the Hukam of His Command; such is His Way. ||2||

ਕੇਤੇ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਾਣ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥

केते कहहि वखाण कहि कहि जावणा ॥

Kete kahahi vakhaa(nn) kahi kahi jaava(nn)aa ||

Some speak and expound, and while speaking and lecturing, they pass away.

ਵੇਦ ਕਹਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥

वेद कहहि वखिआण अंतु न पावणा ॥

Ved kahahi vakhiaa(nn) anttu na paava(nn)aa ||

The Vedas speak and expound on the Lord, but they do not know His limits.

ਪੜਿਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਬੁਝਿਐ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥

पड़िऐ नाही भेदु बुझिऐ पावणा ॥

Pa(rr)iai naahee bhedu bujhiai paava(nn)aa ||

Not by studying, but through understanding, is the Lord's Mystery revealed.

ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਭੇਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਾ ॥

खटु दरसन कै भेखि किसै सचि समावणा ॥

Khatu darasan kai bhekhi kisai sachi samaava(nn)aa ||

There are six pathways in the Shaastras, but how rare are those who merge in the True Lord through them.

ਸਚਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ॥

सचा पुरखु अलखु सबदि सुहावणा ॥

Sachaa purakhu alakhu sabadi suhaava(nn)aa ||

The True Lord is Unknowable; through the Word of His Shabad, we are embellished.

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਸੰਖ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥

मंने नाउ बिसंख दरगह पावणा ॥

Manne naau bisankkh daragah paava(nn)aa ||

One who believes in the Name of the Infinite Lord, attains the Court of the Lord.

ਖਾਲਕ ਕਉ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਢਾਢੀ ਗਾਵਣਾ ॥

खालक कउ आदेसु ढाढी गावणा ॥

Khaalak kau aadesu dhaadhee gaava(nn)aa ||

I humbly bow to the Creator Lord; I am a minstrel singing His Praises.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਾ ॥੨੧॥

नानक जुगु जुगु एकु मंनि वसावणा ॥२१॥

Naanak jugu jugu eku manni vasaava(nn)aa ||21||

Nanak enshrines the Lord within his mind. He is the One, throughout the ages. ||21||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਠੂਹਿਆ ਨਾਗੀ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

मंत्री होइ अठूहिआ नागी लगै जाइ ॥

Manttree hoi athoohiaa naagee lagai jaai ||

Those who charm scorpions and handle snakes

ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣੈ ਦੇ ਕੂਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇ ॥

आपण हथी आपणै दे कूचा आपे लाइ ॥

Aapa(nn) hathee aapa(nn)ai de koochaa aape laai ||

Only brand themselves with their own hands.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਅਤੀ ਹੂ ਧਕਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

हुकमु पइआ धुरि खसम का अती हू धका खाइ ॥

Hukamu paiaa dhuri khasam kaa atee hoo dhakaa khaai ||

By the pre-ordained Order of our Lord and Master, they are beaten badly, and struck down.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਿਉ ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੜੈ ਡੁਬੈ ਹਕਿ ਨਿਆਇ ॥

गुरमुख सिउ मनमुखु अड़ै डुबै हकि निआइ ॥

Guramukh siu manamukhu a(rr)ai dubai haki niaai ||

If the self-willed manmukhs fight with the Gurmukh, they are condemned by the Lord, the True Judge.

ਦੁਹਾ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਆਪੇ ਖਸਮੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥

दुहा सिरिआ आपे खसमु वेखै करि विउपाइ ॥

Duhaa siriaa aape khasamu vekhai kari viupaai ||

He Himself is the Lord and Master of both worlds. He beholds all and makes the exact determination.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक एवै जाणीऐ सभ किछु तिसहि रजाइ ॥१॥

Naanak evai jaa(nn)eeai sabh kichhu tisahi rajaai ||1||

O Nanak, know this well: everything is in accordance with His Will. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੇ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

नानक परखे आप कउ ता पारखु जाणु ॥

Naanak parakhe aap kau taa paarakhu jaa(nn)u ||

O Nanak, if someone judges himself, only then is he known as a real judge.

ਰੋਗੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਦੋਵੈ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਵੈਦੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥

रोगु दारू दोवै बुझै ता वैदु सुजाणु ॥

Rogu daaroo dovai bujhai taa vaidu sujaa(nn)u ||

If someone understands both the disease and the medicine, only then is he a wise physician.

ਵਾਟ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਮਾਮਲਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥

वाट न करई मामला जाणै मिहमाणु ॥

Vaat na karaee maamalaa jaa(nn)ai mihamaa(nn)u ||

Do not involve yourself in idle business on the way; remember that you are only a guest here.

ਮੂਲੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਹਾਣਿ ਲਾਏ ਹਾਣੁ ॥

मूलु जाणि गला करे हाणि लाए हाणु ॥

Moolu jaa(nn)i galaa kare haa(nn)i laae haa(nn)u ||

Speak with those who know the Primal Lord, and renounce your evil ways.

ਲਬਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਟੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

लबि न चलई सचि रहै सो विसटु परवाणु ॥

Labi na chalaee sachi rahai so visatu paravaa(nn)u ||

That virtuous person who does not walk in the way of greed, and who abides in Truth, is accepted and famous.

ਸਰੁ ਸੰਧੇ ਆਗਾਸ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਪਹੁਚੈ ਬਾਣੁ ॥

सरु संधे आगास कउ किउ पहुचै बाणु ॥

Saru sanddhe aagaas kau kiu pahuchai baa(nn)u ||

If an arrow is shot at the sky, how can it reach there?

ਅਗੈ ਓਹੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਹੈ ਵਾਹੇਦੜੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

अगै ओहु अगमु है वाहेदड़ु जाणु ॥२॥

Agai ohu agammu hai vaaheda(rr)u jaa(nn)u ||2||

The sky above is unreachable-know this well, O archer! ||2||

Pauree:

ਨਾਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀਆ ॥

नारी पुरख पिआरु प्रेमि सीगारीआ ॥

Naaree purakh piaaru premi seegaareeaa ||

The soul-bride loves her Husband Lord; she is embellished with His Love.

ਕਰਨਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਰਹਨੀ ਵਾਰੀਆ ॥

करनि भगति दिनु राति न रहनी वारीआ ॥

Karani bhagati dinu raati na rahanee vaareeaa ||

She worships Him day and night; she cannot be restrained from doing so.

ਮਹਲਾ ਮੰਝਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆ ॥

महला मंझि निवासु सबदि सवारीआ ॥

Mahalaa manjjhi nivaasu sabadi savaareeaa ||

In the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, she has made her home; she is adorned with the Word of His Shabad.

ਸਚੁ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਸੇ ਵੇਚਾਰੀਆ ॥

सचु कहनि अरदासि से वेचारीआ ॥

Sachu kahani aradaasi se vechaareeaa ||

She is humble, and she offers her true and sincere prayer.

ਸੋਹਨਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਆ ॥

सोहनि खसमै पासि हुकमि सिधारीआ ॥

Sohani khasamai paasi hukami sidhaareeaa ||

She is beautiful in the Company of her Lord and Master; she walks in the Way of His Will.

ਸਖੀ ਕਹਨਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਮਨਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੀਆ ॥

सखी कहनि अरदासि मनहु पिआरीआ ॥

Sakhee kahani aradaasi manahu piaareeaa ||

With her dear friends, she offers her heart-felt prayers to her Beloved.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ਫਿਟੁ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥

बिनु नावै ध्रिगु वासु फिटु सु जीविआ ॥

Binu naavai dhrigu vaasu phitu su jeeviaa ||

Cursed is that home, and shameful is that life, which is without the Name of the Lord.

ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀਆਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਿਆ ॥੨੨॥

सबदि सवारीआसु अम्रितु पीविआ ॥२२॥

Sabadi savaareeaasu ammmritu peeviaa ||22||

But she who is adorned with the Word of His Shabad, drinks in the Amrit of His Nectar. ||22||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਮਾਰੂ ਮੀਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਅਗੀ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਖ ॥

मारू मीहि न त्रिपतिआ अगी लहै न भुख ॥

Maaroo meehi na tripatiaa agee lahai na bhukh ||

The desert is not satisfied by rain, and the fire is not quenched by desire.

ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਜਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਸਾਇਰ ਭਰੇ ਕਿਸੁਕ ॥

राजा राजि न त्रिपतिआ साइर भरे किसुक ॥

Raajaa raaji na tripatiaa saair bhare kisuk ||

The king is not satisfied with his kingdom, and the oceans are full, but still they thirst for more.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕੇਤੀ ਪੁਛਾ ਪੁਛ ॥੧॥

नानक सचे नाम की केती पुछा पुछ ॥१॥

Naanak sache naam kee ketee puchhaa puchh ||1||

O Nanak, how many times must I seek and ask for the True Name? ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸਿ ਜਨਮਸਿ ਜਾਵਤੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥

निहफलं तसि जनमसि जावतु ब्रहम न बिंदते ॥

Nihaphalann tasi janamasi jaavatu brham na binddate ||

Life is useless, as long as one does not know the Lord God.

ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥

सागरं संसारसि गुर परसादी तरहि के ॥

Saagarann sanssaarasi gur parasaadee tarahi ke ||

Only a few cross over the world-ocean, by Guru's Grace.

ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

करण कारण समरथु है कहु नानक बीचारि ॥

Kara(nn) kaara(nn) samarathu hai kahu naanak beechaari ||

The Lord is the All-powerful Cause of causes, says Nanak after deep deliberation.

ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

कारणु करते वसि है जिनि कल रखी धारि ॥२॥

Kaara(nn)u karate vasi hai jini kal rakhee dhaari ||2||

The creation is subject to the Creator, who sustains it by His Almighty Power. ||2||

ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ਢਾਢੀ ਵਸਿਆ ॥

खसमै कै दरबारि ढाढी वसिआ ॥

Khasamai kai darabaari dhaadhee vasiaa ||

In the Court of the Lord and Master, His minstrels dwell.

ਸਚਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਕਲਾਣਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ॥

सचा खसमु कलाणि कमलु विगसिआ ॥

Sachaa khasamu kalaa(nn)i kamalu vigasiaa ||

Singing the Praises of their True Lord and Master, the lotuses of their hearts have blossomed forth.

ਖਸਮਹੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਮਨਹੁ ਰਹਸਿਆ ॥

खसमहु पूरा पाइ मनहु रहसिआ ॥

Khasamahu pooraa paai manahu rahasiaa ||

Obtaining their Perfect Lord and Master, their minds are transfixed with ecstasy.

ਦੁਸਮਨ ਕਢੇ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਜਣ ਸਰਸਿਆ ॥

दुसमन कढे मारि सजण सरसिआ ॥

Dusaman kadhe maari saja(nn) sarasiaa ||

Their enemies have been driven out and subdued, and their friends are very pleased.

ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਸਿਆ ॥

सचा सतिगुरु सेवनि सचा मारगु दसिआ ॥

Sachaa satiguru sevani sachaa maaragu dasiaa ||

Those who serve the Truthful True Guru are shown the True Path.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਵਿਧਉਸਿਆ ॥

सचा सबदु बीचारि कालु विधउसिआ ॥

Sachaa sabadu beechaari kaalu vidhausiaa ||

Reflecting on the True Word of the Shabad, death is overcome.

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਥੇ ਅਕਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥

ढाढी कथे अकथु सबदि सवारिआ ॥

Dhaadhee kathe akathu sabadi savaariaa ||

Speaking the Unspoken Speech of the Lord, one is adorned with the Word of His Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਣ ਗਹਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੨੩॥

नानक गुण गहि रासि हरि जीउ मिले पिआरिआ ॥२३॥

Naanak gu(nn) gahi raasi hari jeeu mile piaariaa ||23||

Nanak holds tight to the Treasure of Virtue, and meets with the Dear, Beloved Lord. ||23||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਖਤਿਅਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਖਤੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਤ ਖਤਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

खतिअहु जमे खते करनि त खतिआ विचि पाहि ॥

Khatiahu jamme khate karani ta khatiaa vichi paahi ||

Born because of the karma of their past mistakes, they make more mistakes, and fall into mistakes.

ਧੋਤੇ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਉਤਰਹਿ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

धोते मूलि न उतरहि जे सउ धोवण पाहि ॥

Dhote mooli na utarahi je sau dhova(nn) paahi ||

By washing, their pollution is not removed, even though they may wash hundreds of times.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸੇ ਬਖਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਹੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

नानक बखसे बखसीअहि नाहि त पाही पाहि ॥१॥

Naanak bakhase bakhaseeahi naahi ta paahee paahi ||1||

O Nanak, if God forgives, they are forgiven; otherwise, they are kicked and beaten. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਝਖਣਾ ਦੁਖ ਛਡਿ ਮੰਗੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥

नानक बोलणु झखणा दुख छडि मंगीअहि सुख ॥

Naanak bola(nn)u jhakha(nn)aa dukh chhadi manggeeahi sukh ||

O Nanak, it is absurd to ask to be spared from pain by begging for comfort.

ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਦਰਿ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਮਨੁਖ ॥

सुखु दुखु दुइ दरि कपड़े पहिरहि जाइ मनुख ॥

Sukhu dukhu dui dari kapa(rr)e pahirahi jaai manukh ||

Pleasure and pain are the two garments given, to be worn in the Court of the Lord.

ਜਿਥੈ ਬੋਲਣਿ ਹਾਰੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਚੰਗੀ ਚੁਪ ॥੨॥

जिथै बोलणि हारीऐ तिथै चंगी चुप ॥२॥

Jithai bola(nn)i haareeai tithai changgee chup ||2||

Where you are bound to lose by speaking, there, you ought to remain silent. ||2||

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਅੰਦਰੁ ਭਾਲਿਆ ॥

चारे कुंडा देखि अंदरु भालिआ ॥

Chaare kunddaa dekhi anddaru bhaaliaa ||

After looking around in the four directions, I looked within my own self.

ਸਚੈ ਪੁਰਖਿ ਅਲਖਿ ਸਿਰਜਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥

सचै पुरखि अलखि सिरजि निहालिआ ॥

Sachai purakhi alakhi siraji nihaaliaa ||

There, I saw the True, Invisible Lord Creator.

ਉਝੜਿ ਭੁਲੇ ਰਾਹ ਗੁਰਿ ਵੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥

उझड़ि भुले राह गुरि वेखालिआ ॥

Ujha(rr)i bhule raah guri vekhaaliaa ||

I was wandering in the wilderness, but now the Guru has shown me the Way.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਚੇ ਵਾਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿਆ ॥

सतिगुर सचे वाहु सचु समालिआ ॥

Satigur sache vaahu sachu samaaliaa ||

Hail to the True, True Guru, through whom we merge in the Truth.

ਪਾਇਆ ਰਤਨੁ ਘਰਾਹੁ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲਿਆ ॥

पाइआ रतनु घराहु दीवा बालिआ ॥

Paaiaa ratanu gharaahu deevaa baaliaa ||

I have found the jewel within the home of my own self; the lamp within has been lit.

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਸਚ ਵਾਲਿਆ ॥

सचै सबदि सलाहि सुखीए सच वालिआ ॥

Sachai sabadi salaahi sukheee sach vaaliaa ||

Those who praise the True Word of the Shabad, abide in the peace of Truth.

ਨਿਡਰਿਆ ਡਰੁ ਲਗਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਸਿ ਗਾਲਿਆ ॥

निडरिआ डरु लगि गरबि सि गालिआ ॥

Nidariaa daru lagi garabi si gaaliaa ||

But those who do not have the Fear of God, are overtaken by fear. They are destroyed by their own pride.

ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਿਰੈ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ॥੨੪॥

नावहु भुला जगु फिरै बेतालिआ ॥२४॥

Naavahu bhulaa jagu phirai betaaliaa ||24||

Having forgotten the Name, the world is roaming around like a wild demon. ||24||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਭੈ ਮਰੈ ਭੀ ਭਉ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

भै विचि जमै भै मरै भी भउ मन महि होइ ॥

Bhai vichi jammai bhai marai bhee bhau man mahi hoi ||

In fear we are born, and in fear we die. Fear is always present in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਸਹਿਲਾ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

नानक भै विचि जे मरै सहिला आइआ सोइ ॥१॥

Naanak bhai vichi je marai sahilaa aaiaa soi ||1||

O Nanak, if one dies in the fear of God, his coming into the world is blessed and approved. ||1||

ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

भै विणु जीवै बहुतु बहुतु खुसीआ खुसी कमाइ ॥

Bhai vi(nn)u jeevai bahutu bahutu khuseeaa khusee kamaai ||

Without the fear of God, you may live very, very long, and savor the most enjoyable pleasures.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक भै विणु जे मरै मुहि कालै उठि जाइ ॥२॥

Naanak bhai vi(nn)u je marai muhi kaalai uthi jaai ||2||

O Nanak, if you die without the fear of God, you will arise and depart with a blackened face. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰੀਐ ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu ta saradhaa pooreeai ||

When the True Guru is merciful, then your desires will be fulfilled.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਝੂਰੀਐ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु न कबहूं झूरीऐ ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu na kabahoonn jhooreeai ||

When the True Guru is merciful, you will never grieve.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु ता दुखु न जाणीऐ ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu taa dukhu na jaa(nn)eeai ||

When the True Guru is merciful, you will know no pain.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੀਐ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु ता हरि रंगु माणीऐ ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu taa hari ranggu maa(nn)eeai ||

When the True Guru is merciful, you will enjoy the Lord's Love.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु ता जम का डरु केहा ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu taa jam kaa daru kehaa ||

When the True Guru is merciful, then why should you fear death?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਾ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु ता सद ही सुखु देहा ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu taa sad hee sukhu dehaa ||

When the True Guru is merciful, the body is always at peace.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤਾ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु ता नव निधि पाईऐ ॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu taa nav nidhi paaeeai ||

When the True Guru is merciful, the nine treasures are obtained.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੨੫॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु त सचि समाईऐ ॥२५॥

Satiguru hoi daiaalu ta sachi samaaeeai ||25||

When the True Guru is merciful, you shall be absorbed in the True Lord. ||25||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹਾਇ ਪੀਅਹਿ ਮਲਵਾਣੀ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੰਗਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਖਾਹੀ ॥

सिरु खोहाइ पीअहि मलवाणी जूठा मंगि मंगि खाही ॥

Siru khohaai peeahi malavaa(nn)ee joothaa manggi manggi khaahee ||

They pluck the hair out of their heads, and drink in filthy water; they beg endlessly and eat the garbage which others have thrown away.

ਫੋਲਿ ਫਦੀਹਤਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਲੈਨਿ ਭੜਾਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਗਾਹੀ ॥

फोलि फदीहति मुहि लैनि भड़ासा पाणी देखि सगाही ॥

Pholi phadeehati muhi laini bha(rr)aasaa paa(nn)ee dekhi sagaahee ||

They spread manure, they suck in rotting smells, and they are afraid of clean water.

ਭੇਡਾ ਵਾਗੀ ਸਿਰੁ ਖੋਹਾਇਨਿ ਭਰੀਅਨਿ ਹਥ ਸੁਆਹੀ ॥

भेडा वागी सिरु खोहाइनि भरीअनि हथ सुआही ॥

Bhedaa vaagee siru khohaaini bhareeani hath suaahee ||

Their hands are smeared with ashes, and the hair on their heads is plucked out-they are like sheep!

ਮਾਊ ਪੀਊ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਗਵਾਇਨਿ ਟਬਰ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਧਾਹੀ ॥

माऊ पीऊ किरतु गवाइनि टबर रोवनि धाही ॥

Maau peeu kiratu gavaaini tabar rovani dhaahee ||

They have renounced the lifestyle of their mothers and fathers, and their families and relatives cry out in distress.

ਓਨਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਨ ਪਤਲਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਨ ਦੀਵਾ ਮੁਏ ਕਿਥਾਊ ਪਾਹੀ ॥

ओना पिंडु न पतलि किरिआ न दीवा मुए किथाऊ पाही ॥

Onaa pinddu na patali kiriaa na deevaa mue kithaau paahee ||

No one offers the rice dishes at their last rites, and no one lights the lamps for them. After their death, where will they be sent?

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਨਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹੀ ॥

अठसठि तीरथ देनि न ढोई ब्रहमण अंनु न खाही ॥

Athasathi teerath deni na dhoee brhama(nn) annu na khaahee ||

The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage give them no place of protection, and no Brahmin will eat their food.

ਸਦਾ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

सदा कुचील रहहि दिनु राती मथै टिके नाही ॥

Sadaa kucheel rahahi dinu raatee mathai tike naahee ||

They remain polluted forever, day and night; they do not apply the ceremonial tilak mark to their foreheads.

ਝੁੰਡੀ ਪਾਇ ਬਹਨਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਮਰਣੈ ਦੜਿ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

झुंडी पाइ बहनि निति मरणै दड़ि दीबाणि न जाही ॥

Jhunddee paai bahani niti mara(nn)ai da(rr)i deebaa(nn)i na jaahee ||

They sit together in silence, as if in mourning; they do not go to the Lord's Court.

ਲਕੀ ਕਾਸੇ ਹਥੀ ਫੁੰਮਣ ਅਗੋ ਪਿਛੀ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

लकी कासे हथी फुमण अगो पिछी जाही ॥

Lakee kaase hathee phummma(nn) ago pichhee jaahee ||

With their begging bowls hanging from their waists, and their fly-brushes in their hands, they walk along in single file.

ਨਾ ਓਇ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਜੰਗਮ ਨਾ ਓਇ ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁੰਲਾ ॥

ना ओइ जोगी ना ओइ जंगम ना ओइ काजी मुंला ॥

Naa oi jogee naa oi janggam naa oi kaajee munllaa ||

They are not Yogis, and they are not Jangams, followers of Shiva. They are not Qazis or Mullahs.

ਦਯਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਫਿਟਾ ਵਤੈ ਗਲਾ ॥

दयि विगोए फिरहि विगुते फिटा वतै गला ॥

Dayi vigoe phirahi vigute phitaa vatai galaa ||

Ruined by the Merciful Lord, they wander around in disgrace, and their entire troop is contaminated.

ਜੀਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਰਖੈ ॥

जीआ मारि जीवाले सोई अवरु न कोई रखै ॥

Jeeaa maari jeevaale soee avaru na koee rakhai ||

The Lord alone kills and restores to life; no one else can protect anyone from Him.

ਦਾਨਹੁ ਤੈ ਇਸਨਾਨਹੁ ਵੰਜੇ ਭਸੁ ਪਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਖੁਥੈ ॥

दानहु तै इसनानहु वंजे भसु पई सिरि खुथै ॥

Daanahu tai isanaanahu vanjje bhasu paee siri khuthai ||

They go without giving alms or any cleansing baths; their shaven heads become covered with dust.

ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਰਤਨ ਉਪੰਨੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਮਾਧਾਣੀ ॥

पाणी विचहु रतन उपंने मेरु कीआ माधाणी ॥

Paa(nn)ee vichahu ratan upanne meru keeaa maadhaa(nn)ee ||

The jewel emerged from the water, when the mountain of gold was used to churn it.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵੀ ਥਾਪੇ ਪੁਰਬੀ ਲਗੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

अठसठि तीरथ देवी थापे पुरबी लगै बाणी ॥

Athasathi teerath devee thaape purabee lagai baa(nn)ee ||

The gods established the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, where the festivals are celebrated and hymns are chanted.

ਨਾਇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਨਾਤੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥

नाइ निवाजा नातै पूजा नावनि सदा सुजाणी ॥

Naai nivaajaa naatai poojaa naavani sadaa sujaa(nn)ee ||

After bathing, the Muslims recite their prayers, and after bathing, the Hindus perform their worship services. The wise always take cleansing baths.

ਮੁਇਆ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

मुइआ जीवदिआ गति होवै जां सिरि पाईऐ पाणी ॥

Muiaa jeevadiaa gati hovai jaan siri paaeeai paa(nn)ee ||

At the time of death, and at the time of birth, they are purified, when water is poured on their heads.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਸੈਤਾਨੀ ਏਨਾ ਗਲ ਨ ਭਾਣੀ ॥

नानक सिरखुथे सैतानी एना गल न भाणी ॥

Naanak sirakhuthe saitaanee enaa gal na bhaa(nn)ee ||

O Nanak, the shaven-headed ones are devils. They are not pleased to hear these words.

ਵੁਠੈ ਹੋਇਐ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਜੀਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

वुठै होइऐ होइ बिलावलु जीआ जुगति समाणी ॥

Vuthai hoiai hoi bilaavalu jeeaa jugati samaa(nn)ee ||

When it rains, there is happiness. Water is the key to all life.

ਵੁਠੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾ ਸਭਸੈ ਪੜਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

वुठै अंनु कमादु कपाहा सभसै पड़दा होवै ॥

Vuthai annu kamaadu kapaahaa sabhasai pa(rr)adaa hovai ||

When it rains, the corn grows, and the sugar cane, and the cotton, which provides clothing for all.

ਵੁਠੈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਸੁਰਹੀ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਵੈ ॥

वुठै घाहु चरहि निति सुरही सा धन दही विलोवै ॥

Vuthai ghaahu charahi niti surahee saa dhan dahee vilovai ||

When it rains, the cows always have grass to graze upon, and housewives can churn the milk into butter.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਿਇ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਸਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਇਐ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥

तितु घिइ होम जग सद पूजा पइऐ कारजु सोहै ॥

Titu ghii hom jag sad poojaa paiai kaaraju sohai ||

With that ghee, sacred feasts and worship services are performed; all these efforts are blessed.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਨਦੀ ਸਭਿ ਸਿਖੀ ਨਾਤੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

गुरू समुंदु नदी सभि सिखी नातै जितु वडिआई ॥

Guroo samunddu nadee sabhi sikhee naatai jitu vadiaaee ||

The Guru is the ocean, and all His Teachings are the river. Bathing within it, glorious greatness is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਸਤ ਚਟੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥

नानक जे सिरखुथे नावनि नाही ता सत चटे सिरि छाई ॥१॥

Naanak je sirakhuthe naavani naahee taa sat chate siri chhaaee ||1||

O Nanak, if the shaven-headed ones do not bathe, then seven handfuls of ashes are upon their heads. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇਹੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

अगी पाला कि करे सूरज केही राति ॥

Agee paalaa ki kare sooraj kehee raati ||

What can the cold do to the fire? How can the night affect the sun?

ਚੰਦ ਅਨੇਰਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਤਿ ॥

चंद अनेरा कि करे पउण पाणी किआ जाति ॥

Chandd aneraa ki kare pau(nn) paa(nn)ee kiaa jaati ||

What can the darkness do to the moon? What can social status do to air and water?

ਧਰਤੀ ਚੀਜੀ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

धरती चीजी कि करे जिसु विचि सभु किछु होइ ॥

Dharatee cheejee ki kare jisu vichi sabhu kichhu hoi ||

What are personal possessions to the earth, from which all things are produced?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक ता पति जाणीऐ जा पति रखै सोइ ॥२॥

Naanak taa pati jaa(nn)eeai jaa pati rakhai soi ||2||

O Nanak, he alone is known as honorable, whose honor the Lord preserves. ||2||

Pauree:

ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਲਾਣਿਆ ॥

तुधु सचे सुबहानु सदा कलाणिआ ॥

Tudhu sache subahaanu sadaa kalaa(nn)iaa ||

It is of You, O my True and Wondrous Lord, that I sing forever.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

तूं सचा दीबाणु होरि आवण जाणिआ ॥

Toonn sachaa deebaa(nn)u hori aava(nn) jaa(nn)iaa ||

Yours is the True Court. All others are subject to coming and going.

ਸਚੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਜੇਹਿਆ ॥

सचु जि मंगहि दानु सि तुधै जेहिआ ॥

Sachu ji manggahi daanu si tudhai jehiaa ||

Those who ask for the gift of the True Name are like You.

ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥

सचु तेरा फुरमानु सबदे सोहिआ ॥

Sachu teraa phuramaanu sabade sohiaa ||

Your Command is True; we are adorned with the Word of Your Shabad.

ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਤੁਧੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

मंनिऐ गिआनु धिआनु तुधै ते पाइआ ॥

Manniai giaanu dhiaanu tudhai te paaiaa ||

Through faith and trust, we receive spiritual wisdom and meditation from You.

ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥

करमि पवै नीसानु न चलै चलाइआ ॥

Karami pavai neesaanu na chalai chalaaiaa ||

By Your Grace, the banner of honor is obtained. It cannot be taken away or lost.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥

तूं सचा दातारु नित देवहि चड़हि सवाइआ ॥

Toonn sachaa daataaru nit devahi cha(rr)ahi savaaiaa ||

You are the True Giver; You give continually. Your Gifts continue to increase.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥

नानकु मंगै दानु जो तुधु भाइआ ॥२६॥

Naanaku manggai daanu jo tudhu bhaaiaa ||26||

Nanak begs for that gift which is pleasing to You. ||26||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

सलोकु मः २ ॥

Saloku M: 2 ||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਦੀਖਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮੇਉ ॥

दीखिआ आखि बुझाइआ सिफती सचि समेउ ॥

Deekhiaa aakhi bujhaaiaa siphatee sachi sameu ||

Those who have accepted the Guru's Teachings and who have found the path remain absorbed in the Praises of the True Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਉਪਦੇਸੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥

तिन कउ किआ उपदेसीऐ जिन गुरु नानक देउ ॥१॥

Tin kau kiaa upadeseeai jin guru naanak deu ||1||

What teachings can be imparted to those who have the Divine Guru Nanak as their Guru? ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

मः १ ॥

First Mehl:

ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

आपि बुझाए सोई बूझै ॥

Aapi bujhaae soee boojhai ||

We understand the Lord only when He Himself inspires us to understand Him.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਝਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

जिसु आपि सुझाए तिसु सभु किछु सूझै ॥

Jisu aapi sujhaae tisu sabhu kichhu soojhai ||

He alone knows everything, unto whom the Lord Himself gives knowledge.

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਥਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

कहि कहि कथना माइआ लूझै ॥

Kahi kahi kathanaa maaiaa loojhai ||

One may talk and preach and give sermons but still yearn after Maya.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਕਰੇ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

हुकमी सगल करे आकार ॥

Hukamee sagal kare aakaar ||

The Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, has created the entire creation.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

आपे जाणै सरब वीचार ॥

Aape jaa(nn)ai sarab veechaar ||

He Himself knows the inner nature of all.

ਅਖਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਖਿਓ ਆਪਿ ॥

अखर नानक अखिओ आपि ॥

Akhar naanak akhio aapi ||

O Nanak, He Himself uttered the Word.

ਲਹੈ ਭਰਾਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੨॥

लहै भराति होवै जिसु दाति ॥२॥

Lahai bharaati hovai jisu daati ||2||

Doubt departs from one who receives this gift. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

हउ ढाढी वेकारु कारै लाइआ ॥

Hau dhaadhee vekaaru kaarai laaiaa ||

I was a minstrel, out of work, when the Lord took me into His service.

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਕੈ ਵਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥

राति दिहै कै वार धुरहु फुरमाइआ ॥

Raati dihai kai vaar dhurahu phuramaaiaa ||

To sing His Praises day and night, He gave me His Order, right from the start.

ਢਾਢੀ ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥

ढाढी सचै महलि खसमि बुलाइआ ॥

Dhaadhee sachai mahali khasami bulaaiaa ||

My Lord and Master has summoned me, His minstrel, to the True Mansion of His Presence.

ਸਚੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਪੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

सची सिफति सालाह कपड़ा पाइआ ॥

Sachee siphati saalaah kapa(rr)aa paaiaa ||

He has dressed me in the robes of His True Praise and Glory.

ਸਚਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥

सचा अम्रित नामु भोजनु आइआ ॥

Sachaa ammmrit naamu bhojanu aaiaa ||

The Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name has become my food.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖਾਧਾ ਰਜਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

गुरमती खाधा रजि तिनि सुखु पाइआ ॥

Guramatee khaadhaa raji tini sukhu paaiaa ||

Those who follow the Guru's Teachings, who eat this food and are satisfied, find peace.

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥

ढाढी करे पसाउ सबदु वजाइआ ॥

Dhaadhee kare pasaau sabadu vajaaiaa ||

His minstrel spreads His Glory, singing and vibrating the Word of His Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨੭॥ ਸੁਧੁ

नानक सचु सालाहि पूरा पाइआ ॥२७॥ सुधु

Naanak sachu saalaahi pooraa paaiaa ||27|| sudhu

O Nanak, praising the True Lord, I have obtained His Perfection. ||27|| Sudh ||
