Pauree:

ਇਕਿ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਹਿ ਵਣ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥

इकि कंद मूलु चुणि खाहि वण खंडि वासा ॥

Īki kanđđ moolu chuñi khaahi vañ khanddi vaasaa ||

Some pick and eat fruits and roots, and live in the wilderness.

ਇਕਿ ਭਗਵਾ ਵੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸਾ ॥

इकि भगवा वेसु करि फिरहि जोगी संनिआसा ॥

Īki bhagavaa vesu kari phirahi jogee sanniâasaa ||

Some wander around wearing saffron robes, as Yogis and Sanyaasees.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥

अंदरि त्रिसना बहुतु छादन भोजन की आसा ॥

Ânđđari ŧrisanaa bahuŧu chhaađan bhojan kee âasaa ||

But there is still so much desire within them-they still yearn for clothes and food.

ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਨ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥

बिरथा जनमु गवाइ न गिरही न उदासा ॥

Biraŧhaa janamu gavaaī na girahee na ūđaasaa ||

They waste their lives uselessly; they are neither householders nor renunciates.

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ॥

जमकालु सिरहु न उतरै त्रिबिधि मनसा ॥

Jamakaalu sirahu na ūŧarai ŧribiđhi manasaa ||

The Messenger of Death hangs over their heads, and they cannot escape the three-phased desire.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਜਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥

गुरमती कालु न आवै नेड़ै जा होवै दासनि दासा ॥

Guramaŧee kaalu na âavai neɍai jaa hovai đaasani đaasaa ||

Death does not even approach those who follow the Guru's Teachings, and become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥

सचा सबदु सचु मनि घर ही माहि उदासा ॥

Sachaa sabađu sachu mani ghar hee maahi ūđaasaa ||

The True Word of the Shabad abides in their true minds; within the home of their own inner beings, they remain detached.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥੫॥

नानक सतिगुरु सेवनि आपणा से आसा ते निरासा ॥५॥

Naanak saŧiguru sevani âapañaa se âasaa ŧe niraasaa ||5||

O Nanak, those who serve their True Guru, rise from desire to desirelessness. ||5||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਜੇ ਰਤੁ ਲਗੈ ਕਪੜੈ ਜਾਮਾ ਹੋਇ ਪਲੀਤੁ ॥

जे रतु लगै कपड़ै जामा होइ पलीतु ॥

Je raŧu lagai kapaɍai jaamaa hoī paleeŧu ||

If one's clothes are stained with blood, the garment becomes polluted.

ਜੋ ਰਤੁ ਪੀਵਹਿ ਮਾਣਸਾ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ॥

जो रतु पीवहि माणसा तिन किउ निरमलु चीतु ॥

Jo raŧu peevahi maañasaa ŧin kiū niramalu cheeŧu ||

Those who suck the blood of human beings-how can their consciousness be pure?

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਉ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਕਾ ਦਿਲਿ ਹਛੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥

नानक नाउ खुदाइ का दिलि हछै मुखि लेहु ॥

Naanak naaū khuđaaī kaa đili hachhai mukhi lehu ||

O Nanak, chant the Name of God, with heart-felt devotion.

ਅਵਰਿ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ਦੁਨੀ ਕੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਰੇਹੁ ॥੧॥

अवरि दिवाजे दुनी के झूठे अमल करेहु ॥१॥

Âvari đivaaje đunee ke jhoothe âmal karehu ||1||

Everything else is just a pompous worldly show, and the practice of false deeds. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਜਾ ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਾ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਵਾ ॥

जा हउ नाही ता किआ आखा किहु नाही किआ होवा ॥

Jaa haū naahee ŧaa kiâa âakhaa kihu naahee kiâa hovaa ||

Since I am no one, what can I say? Since I am nothing, what can I be?

ਕੀਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਕਥਨਾ ਭਰਿਆ ਭਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਧੋਵਾਂ ॥

कीता करणा कहिआ कथना भरिआ भरि भरि धोवां ॥

Keeŧaa karañaa kahiâa kaŧhanaa bhariâa bhari bhari đhovaan ||

As He created me, so I act. As He causes me to speak, so I speak. I am full and overflowing with sins-if only I could wash them away!

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਾ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਐਸਾ ਆਗੂ ਹੋਵਾਂ ॥

आपि न बुझा लोक बुझाई ऐसा आगू होवां ॥

Âapi na bujhaa lok bujhaaëe âisaa âagoo hovaan ||

I do not understand myself, and yet I try to teach others. Such is the guide I am!

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੈ ਸਭਸੁ ਮੁਹਾਏ ਸਾਥੈ ॥

नानक अंधा होइ कै दसे राहै सभसु मुहाए साथै ॥

Naanak ânđđhaa hoī kai đase raahai sabhasu muhaaē saaŧhai ||

O Nanak, the one who is blind shows others the way, and misleads all his companions.

ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਾਹਿ ਸੁ ਐਸਾ ਆਗੂ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥

अगै गइआ मुहे मुहि पाहि सु ऐसा आगू जापै ॥२॥

Âgai gaīâa muhe muhi paahi su âisaa âagoo jaapai ||2||

But, going to the world hereafter, he shall be beaten and kicked in the face; then, it will be obvious, what sort of guide he was! ||2||

Pauree:

ਮਾਹਾ ਰੁਤੀ ਸਭ ਤੂੰ ਘੜੀ ਮੂਰਤ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

माहा रुती सभ तूं घड़ी मूरत वीचारा ॥

Maahaa ruŧee sabh ŧoonn ghaɍee mooraŧ veechaaraa ||

Through all the months and the seasons, the minutes and the hours, I dwell upon You, O Lord.

ਤੂੰ ਗਣਤੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਚੇ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

तूं गणतै किनै न पाइओ सचे अलख अपारा ॥

Ŧoonn gañaŧai kinai na paaīõ sache âlakh âpaaraa ||

No one has attained You by clever calculations, O True, Unseen and Infinite Lord.

ਪੜਿਆ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥

पड़िआ मूरखु आखीऐ जिसु लबु लोभु अहंकारा ॥

Paɍiâa moorakhu âakheeâi jisu labu lobhu âhankkaaraa ||

That scholar who is full of greed, arrogant pride and egotism, is known to be a fool.

ਨਾਉ ਪੜੀਐ ਨਾਉ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

नाउ पड़ीऐ नाउ बुझीऐ गुरमती वीचारा ॥

Naaū paɍeeâi naaū bujheeâi guramaŧee veechaaraa ||

So read the Name, and realize the Name, and contemplate the Guru's Teachings.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

गुरमती नामु धनु खटिआ भगती भरे भंडारा ॥

Guramaŧee naamu đhanu khatiâa bhagaŧee bhare bhanddaaraa ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, I have earned the wealth of the Naam; I possess the storehouses, overflowing with devotion to the Lord.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥

निरमलु नामु मंनिआ दरि सचै सचिआरा ॥

Niramalu naamu manniâa đari sachai sachiâaraa ||

Believing in the Immaculate Naam, one is hailed as true, in the True Court of the Lord.

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

जिस दा जीउ पराणु है अंतरि जोति अपारा ॥

Jis đaa jeeū paraañu hai ânŧŧari joŧi âpaaraa ||

The Divine Light of the Infinite Lord, who owns the soul and the breath of life, is deep within the inner being.

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਇਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੬॥

सचा साहु इकु तूं होरु जगतु वणजारा ॥६॥

Sachaa saahu īku ŧoonn horu jagaŧu vañajaaraa ||6||

You alone are the True Banker, O Lord; the rest of the world is just Your petty trader. ||6||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਮਿਹਰ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਸਿਦਕੁ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਹਕੁ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥

मिहर मसीति सिदकु मुसला हकु हलालु कुराणु ॥

Mihar maseeŧi siđaku musalaa haku halaalu kuraañu ||

Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Koran.

ਸਰਮ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਰੋਜਾ ਹੋਹੁ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ॥

सरम सुंनति सीलु रोजा होहु मुसलमाणु ॥

Saram sunnaŧi seelu rojaa hohu musalamaañu ||

Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਬਾ ਸਚੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਕਲਮਾ ਕਰਮ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥

करणी काबा सचु पीरु कलमा करम निवाज ॥

Karañee kaabaa sachu peeru kalamaa karam nivaaj ||

Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and the karma of good deeds your prayer and chant.

ਤਸਬੀ ਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਖੈ ਲਾਜ ॥੧॥

तसबी सा तिसु भावसी नानक रखै लाज ॥१॥

Ŧasabee saa ŧisu bhaavasee naanak rakhai laaj ||1||

Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to His Will. O Nanak, God shall preserve your honor. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

मः १ ॥

M:h 1 ||

First Mehl

ਹਕੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਉਸੁ ਸੂਅਰ ਉਸੁ ਗਾਇ ॥

हकु पराइआ नानका उसु सूअर उसु गाइ ॥

Haku paraaīâa naanakaa ūsu sooâr ūsu gaaī ||

: To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef.

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਹਾਮਾ ਤਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥

गुरु पीरु हामा ता भरे जा मुरदारु न खाइ ॥

Guru peeru haamaa ŧaa bhare jaa murađaaru na khaaī ||

Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses.

ਗਲੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਛੁਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

गली भिसति न जाईऐ छुटै सचु कमाइ ॥

Galee bhisaŧi na jaaëeâi chhutai sachu kamaaī ||

By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.

ਮਾਰਣ ਪਾਹਿ ਹਰਾਮ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

मारण पाहि हराम महि होइ हलालु न जाइ ॥

Maarañ paahi haraam mahi hoī halaalu na jaaī ||

By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਈ ਕੂੜੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक गली कूड़ीई कूड़ो पलै पाइ ॥२॥

Naanak galee kooɍeeëe kooɍo palai paaī ||2||

O Nanak, from false talk, only falsehood is obtained. ||2||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

First Mehl:

ਪੰਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਵਖਤ ਪੰਜਿ ਪੰਜਾ ਪੰਜੇ ਨਾਉ ॥

पंजि निवाजा वखत पंजि पंजा पंजे नाउ ॥

Panjji nivaajaa vakhaŧ panjji panjjaa panjje naaū ||

There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names.

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਹਲਾਲ ਦੁਇ ਤੀਜਾ ਖੈਰ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

पहिला सचु हलाल दुइ तीजा खैर खुदाइ ॥

Pahilaa sachu halaal đuī ŧeejaa khair khuđaaī ||

Let the first be truthfulness, the second honest living, and the third charity in the Name of God.

ਚਉਥੀ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਜਵੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਨਾਇ ॥

चउथी नीअति रासि मनु पंजवी सिफति सनाइ ॥

Chaūŧhee neeâŧi raasi manu panjjavee siphaŧi sanaaī ||

Let the fourth be good will to all, and the fifth the praise of the Lord.

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਲਮਾ ਆਖਿ ਕੈ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਸਦਾਇ ॥

करणी कलमा आखि कै ता मुसलमाणु सदाइ ॥

Karañee kalamaa âakhi kai ŧaa musalamaañu sađaaī ||

Repeat the prayer of good deeds, and then, you may call yourself a Muslim.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇਤੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥

नानक जेते कूड़िआर कूड़ै कूड़ी पाइ ॥३॥

Naanak jeŧe kooɍiâar kooɍai kooɍee paaī ||3||

O Nanak, the false obtain falsehood, and only falsehood. ||3||

ਇਕਿ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਣਜਦੇ ਇਕਿ ਕਚੈ ਦੇ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥

इकि रतन पदारथ वणजदे इकि कचै दे वापारा ॥

Īki raŧan pađaaraŧh vañajađe īki kachai đe vaapaaraa ||

Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

सतिगुरि तुठै पाईअनि अंदरि रतन भंडारा ॥

Saŧiguri ŧuthai paaëeâni ânđđari raŧan bhanddaaraa ||

When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel, deep within the self.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਲਧਿਆ ਅੰਧੇ ਭਉਕਿ ਮੁਏ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ॥

विणु गुर किनै न लधिआ अंधे भउकि मुए कूड़िआरा ॥

Viñu gur kinai na lađhiâa ânđđhe bhaūki muē kooɍiâaraa ||

Without the Guru, no one has found this treasure. The blind and the false have died in their endless wanderings.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

मनमुख दूजै पचि मुए ना बूझहि वीचारा ॥

Manamukh đoojai pachi muē naa boojhahi veechaaraa ||

The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in duality. They do not understand contemplative meditation.

ਇਕਸੁ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥

इकसु बाझहु दूजा को नही किसु अगै करहि पुकारा ॥

Īkasu baajhahu đoojaa ko nahee kisu âgai karahi pukaaraa ||

Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. Unto whom should they complain?

ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਸਦਾ ਭਉਕਦੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਭਰੇ ਤੁਜਾਰਾ ॥

इकि निरधन सदा भउकदे इकना भरे तुजारा ॥

Īki nirađhan sađaa bhaūkađe īkanaa bhare ŧujaaraa ||

Some are destitute, and wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਛਾਰਾ ॥

विणु नावै होरु धनु नाही होरु बिखिआ सभु छारा ॥

Viñu naavai horu đhanu naahee horu bikhiâa sabhu chhaaraa ||

Without God's Name, there is no other wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੭॥

नानक आपि कराए करे आपि हुकमि सवारणहारा ॥७॥

Naanak âapi karaaē kare âapi hukami savaarañahaaraa ||7||

O Nanak, the Lord Himself acts, and causes others to act; by the Hukam of His Command, we are embellished and exalted. ||7||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵਣੁ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥

मुसलमाणु कहावणु मुसकलु जा होइ ता मुसलमाणु कहावै ॥

Musalamaañu kahaavañu musakalu jaa hoī ŧaa musalamaañu kahaavai ||

It is difficult to be called a Muslim; if one is truly a Muslim, then he may be called one.

ਅਵਲਿ ਅਉਲਿ ਦੀਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਮਸਕਲ ਮਾਨਾ ਮਾਲੁ ਮੁਸਾਵੈ ॥

अवलि अउलि दीनु करि मिठा मसकल माना मालु मुसावै ॥

Âvali âūli đeenu kari mithaa masakal maanaa maalu musaavai ||

First, let him savor the religion of the Prophet as sweet; then, let his pride of his possessions be scraped away.

ਹੋਇ ਮੁਸਲਿਮੁ ਦੀਨ ਮੁਹਾਣੈ ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਾ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥

होइ मुसलिमु दीन मुहाणै मरण जीवण का भरमु चुकावै ॥

Hoī musalimu đeen muhaañai marañ jeevañ kaa bharamu chukaavai ||

Becoming a true Muslim, a disciple of the faith of Mohammed, let him put aside the delusion of death and life.

ਰਬ ਕੀ ਰਜਾਇ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥

रब की रजाइ मंने सिर उपरि करता मंने आपु गवावै ॥

Rab kee rajaaī manne sir ūpari karaŧaa manne âapu gavaavai ||

As he submits to God's Will, and surrenders to the Creator, he is rid of selfishness and conceit.

ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਿਹਰੰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

तउ नानक सरब जीआ मिहरमति होइ त मुसलमाणु कहावै ॥१॥

Ŧaū naanak sarab jeeâa miharammaŧi hoī ŧa musalamaañu kahaavai ||1||

And when, O Nanak, he is merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a Muslim. ||1||

ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਜਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਚੁਕਾਵੈ ॥

परहरि काम क्रोधु झूठु निंदा तजि माइआ अहंकारु चुकावै ॥

Parahari kaam krođhu jhoothu ninđđaa ŧaji maaīâa âhankkaaru chukaavai ||

Renounce sexual desire, anger, falsehood and slander; forsake Maya and eliminate egotistical pride.

ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਤਾ ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

तजि कामु कामिनी मोहु तजै ता अंजन माहि निरंजनु पावै ॥

Ŧaji kaamu kaaminee mohu ŧajai ŧaa ânjjan maahi niranjjanu paavai ||

Renounce sexual desire and promiscuity, and give up emotional attachment. Only then shall you obtain the Immaculate Lord amidst the darkness of the world.

ਤਜਿ ਮਾਨੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਤਜਿ ਪਿਆਸ ਆਸ ਰਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ॥

तजि मानु अभिमानु प्रीति सुत दारा तजि पिआस आस राम लिव लावै ॥

Ŧaji maanu âbhimaanu preeŧi suŧ đaaraa ŧaji piâas âas raam liv laavai ||

Renounce selfishness, conceit and arrogant pride, and your love for your children and spouse. Abandon your thirsty hopes and desires, and embrace love for the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

नानक साचा मनि वसै साच सबदि हरि नामि समावै ॥२॥

Naanak saachaa mani vasai saach sabađi hari naami samaavai ||2||

O Nanak, the True One shall come to dwell in your mind. Through the True Word of the Shabad, you shall be absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਰਾਜੇ ਰਯਤਿ ਸਿਕਦਾਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਹਸੀਓ ॥

राजे रयति सिकदार कोइ न रहसीओ ॥

Raaje rayaŧi sikađaar koī na rahaseeõ ||

Neither the kings, nor their subjects, nor the leaders shall remain.

ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਹਸੀਓ ॥

हट पटण बाजार हुकमी ढहसीओ ॥

Hat patañ baajaar hukamee dhahaseeõ ||

The shops, the cities and the streets shall eventually disintegrate, by the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

ਪਕੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ॥

पके बंक दुआर मूरखु जाणै आपणे ॥

Pake bankk đuâar moorakhu jaañai âapañe ||

Those solid and beautiful mansions-the fools think that they belong to them.

ਦਰਬਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਰੀਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਣੇ ॥

दरबि भरे भंडार रीते इकि खणे ॥

Đarabi bhare bhanddaar reeŧe īki khañe ||

The treasure-houses, filled with wealth, shall be emptied out in an instant.

ਤਾਜੀ ਰਥ ਤੁਖਾਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਖਰੇ ॥

ताजी रथ तुखार हाथी पाखरे ॥

Ŧaajee raŧh ŧukhaar haaŧhee paakhare ||

The horses, chariots, camels and elephants, with all their decorations;

ਬਾਗ ਮਿਲਖ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿ ਆਪਣੇ ॥

बाग मिलख घर बार किथै सि आपणे ॥

Baag milakh ghar baar kiŧhai si âapañe ||

the gardens, lands, houses, where are all those things, which they believed to be their own,

ਤੰਬੂ ਪਲੰਘ ਨਿਵਾਰ ਸਰਾਇਚੇ ਲਾਲਤੀ ॥

त्मबू पलंघ निवार सराइचे लालती ॥

Ŧambboo palanggh nivaar saraaīche laalaŧee ||

including tents, soft beds and satin pavilions?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਸਿਨਾਖਤੁ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ॥੮॥

नानक सच दातारु सिनाखतु कुदरती ॥८॥

Naanak sach đaaŧaaru sinaakhaŧu kuđaraŧee ||8||

O Nanak, the True One is the Giver of all; He is revealed through His All-powerful Creative Nature. ||8||

ਨਦੀਆ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਧੇਣਵਾ ਸੁੰਮ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਧੁ ਘੀਉ ॥

नदीआ होवहि धेणवा सुम होवहि दुधु घीउ ॥

Nađeeâa hovahi đheñavaa summm hovahi đuđhu gheeū ||

If the rivers became cows, giving milk, and the spring water became milk and ghee;

ਸਗਲੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਕਰ ਹੋਵੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਉ ॥

सगली धरती सकर होवै खुसी करे नित जीउ ॥

Sagalee đharaŧee sakar hovai khusee kare niŧ jeeū ||

If all the earth became sugar, to continually excite the mind;

ਪਰਬਤੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਾਉ ॥

परबतु सुइना रुपा होवै हीरे लाल जड़ाउ ॥

Parabaŧu suīnaa rupaa hovai heere laal jaɍaaū ||

If the mountains became gold and silver, studded with gems and jewels

ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੧॥

भी तूंहै सालाहणा आखण लहै न चाउ ॥१॥

Bhee ŧoonhhai saalaahañaa âakhañ lahai na chaaū ||1||

-even then, I would worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||1||

ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮੇਵਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਗਰੁੜਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

Bhaar âthaarah mevaa hovai garuɍaa hoī suâaū ||

If all the eighteen loads of vegetation became fruits and the growing grass became sweet rice;

ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਥਾਉ ॥

चंदु सूरजु दुइ फिरदे रखीअहि निहचलु होवै थाउ ॥

Chanđđu sooraju đuī phirađe rakheeâhi nihachalu hovai ŧhaaū ||

if I were able to stop the sun and the moon in their orbits and hold them perfectly steady -

ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੨॥

भी तूंहै सालाहणा आखण लहै न चाउ ॥२॥

Je đehai đukhu laaëeâi paap garah đuī raahu ||

If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars;

ਰਤੁ ਪੀਣੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਿਰੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਪੈ ਭਾਉ ॥

रतु पीणे राजे सिरै उपरि रखीअहि एवै जापै भाउ ॥

Raŧu peeñe raaje sirai ūpari rakheeâhi ēvai jaapai bhaaū ||

And if the blood-sucking kings were to hold power over me

ਭੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੩॥

भी तूंहै सालाहणा आखण लहै न चाउ ॥३॥

Bhee ŧoonhhai saalaahañaa âakhañ lahai na chaaū ||3||

-even if this were my condition, I would still worship and adore You, and my longing to chant Your Praises would not decrease. ||3||

Âgee paalaa kapaɍu hovai khaañaa hovai vaaū ||

If fire and ice were my clothes, and the wind was my food;

ਸੁਰਗੈ ਦੀਆ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਇਸਤਰੀਆ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭੋ ਜਾਉ ॥

सुरगै दीआ मोहणीआ इसतरीआ होवनि नानक सभो जाउ ॥

Suragai đeeâa mohañeeâa īsaŧareeâa hovani naanak sabho jaaū ||

And even if the enticing heavenly beauties were my wives, O Nanak-all this shall pass away!

ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਆਖਣ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚਾਉ ॥੪॥

भी तूहै सालाहणा आखण लहै न चाउ ॥४॥

Pauree:

ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਗੈਬਾਨਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ॥

बदफैली गैबाना खसमु न जाणई ॥

Bađaphailee gaibaanaa khasamu na jaañaëe ||

The foolish demon, who does evil deeds, does not know his Lord and Master.

ਸੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਈ ॥

सो कहीऐ देवाना आपु न पछाणई ॥

So kaheeâi đevaanaa âapu na pachhaañaëe ||

Call him a mad-man, if he does not understand himself.

ਕਲਹਿ ਬੁਰੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਵਾਦੇ ਖਪੀਐ ॥

कलहि बुरी संसारि वादे खपीऐ ॥

Kalahi buree sanssaari vaađe khapeeâi ||

The strife of this world is evil; these struggles are consuming it.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਪਚੀਐ ॥

विणु नावै वेकारि भरमे पचीऐ ॥

Viñu naavai vekaari bharame pacheeâi ||

Without the Lord's Name, life is worthless. Through doubt, the people are being destroyed.

ਰਾਹ ਦੋਵੈ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਝਸੀ ॥

राह दोवै इकु जाणै सोई सिझसी ॥

Raah đovai īku jaañai soëe sijhasee ||

One who recognizes that all spiritual paths lead to the One shall be emancipated.

ਕੁਫਰ ਗੋਅ ਕੁਫਰਾਣੈ ਪਇਆ ਦਝਸੀ ॥

कुफर गोअ कुफराणै पइआ दझसी ॥

Kuphar goâ kupharaañai paīâa đajhasee ||

One who speaks lies shall fall into hell and burn.

ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥

सभ दुनीआ सुबहानु सचि समाईऐ ॥

Sabh đuneeâa subahaanu sachi samaaëeâi ||

In all the world, the most blessed and sanctified are those who remain absorbed in Truth.

ਸਿਝੈ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਵਾਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੯॥

सिझै दरि दीवानि आपु गवाईऐ ॥९॥

Sijhai đari đeevaani âapu gavaaëeâi ||9||

One who eliminates selfishness and conceit is redeemed in the Court of the Lord. ||9||


ਮਃ ੧ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

मः १ सलोकु ॥

M:h 1 saloku ||

First Mehl, Shalok:

ਸੋ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥

सो जीविआ जिसु मनि वसिआ सोइ ॥

So jeeviâa jisu mani vasiâa soī ||

They alone are truly alive, whose minds are filled with the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

नानक अवरु न जीवै कोइ ॥

Naanak âvaru na jeevai koī ||

O Nanak, no one else is truly alive;

ਜੇ ਜੀਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਲਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

जे जीवै पति लथी जाइ ॥

Je jeevai paŧi laŧhee jaaī ||

Those who merely live shall depart in dishonor;

ਸਭੁ ਹਰਾਮੁ ਜੇਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

सभु हरामु जेता किछु खाइ ॥

Sabhu haraamu jeŧaa kichhu khaaī ||

Everything they eat is impure.

ਰਾਜਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਲਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥

राजि रंगु मालि रंगु ॥

Raaji ranggu maali ranggu ||

Intoxicated with power and thrilled with wealth,

ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਨਚੈ ਨੰਗੁ ॥

रंगि रता नचै नंगु ॥

Ranggi raŧaa nachai nanggu ||

They delight in their pleasures, and dance about shamelessly.

ਨਾਨਕ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

नानक ठगिआ मुठा जाइ ॥

Naanak thagiâa muthaa jaaī ||

O Nanak, they are deluded and defrauded.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥

विणु नावै पति गइआ गवाइ ॥१॥

Viñu naavai paŧi gaīâa gavaaī ||1||

Without the Lord's Name, they lose their honor and depart. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਖਾਧੈ ਕਿਆ ਪੈਧੈ ਹੋਇ ॥

What good is food, and what good are clothes,

ਜਾ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

जा मनि नाही सचा सोइ ॥

Jaa mani naahee sachaa soī ||

If the True Lord does not abide within the mind?

ਕਿਆ ਮੇਵਾ ਕਿਆ ਘਿਉ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੈਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

किआ मेवा किआ घिउ गुड़ु मिठा किआ मैदा किआ मासु ॥

Kiâa mevaa kiâa ghiū guɍu mithaa kiâa maiđaa kiâa maasu ||

What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?

ਕਿਆ ਕਪੜੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ॥

किआ कपड़ु किआ सेज सुखाली कीजहि भोग बिलास ॥

Kiâa kapaɍu kiâa sej sukhaalee keejahi bhog bilaas ||

What good are clothes, and what good is a soft bed, to enjoy pleasures and sensual delights?

ਕਿਆ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਿਆ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਆਵੈ ਮਹਲੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

किआ लसकर किआ नेब खवासी आवै महली वासु ॥

Kiâa lasakar kiâa neb khavaasee âavai mahalee vaasu ||

What good is an army, and what good are soldiers, servants and mansions to live in?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੇ ਟੋਲ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੨॥

नानक सचे नाम विणु सभे टोल विणासु ॥२॥

Naanak sache naam viñu sabhe tol viñaasu ||2||

O Nanak, without the True Name, all this paraphernalia shall disappear. ||2||

Pauree:

ਜਾਤੀ ਦੈ ਕਿਆ ਹਥਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਖੀਐ ॥

जाती दै किआ हथि सचु परखीऐ ॥

Jaaŧee đai kiâa haŧhi sachu parakheeâi ||

What good is social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within.

ਮਹੁਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਚਖੀਐ ॥

महुरा होवै हथि मरीऐ चखीऐ ॥

Mahuraa hovai haŧhi mareeâi chakheeâi ||

Pride in one's status is like poison-holding it in your hand and eating it, you shall die.

ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

सचे की सिरकार जुगु जुगु जाणीऐ ॥

Sache kee sirakaar jugu jugu jaañeeâi ||

The True Lord's Sovereign Rule is known throughout the ages.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣੀਐ ॥

हुकमु मंने सिरदारु दरि दीबाणीऐ ॥

Hukamu manne sirađaaru đari đeebaañeeâi ||

One who respects the Hukam of the Lord's Command is honored and respected in the Court of the Lord.

ਫੁਰਮਾਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਾਰ ਖਸਮਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ॥

फुरमानी है कार खसमि पठाइआ ॥

Phuramaanee hai kaar khasami pathaaīâa ||

By the Order of our Lord and Master, we have been brought into this world.

ਤਬਲਬਾਜ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

तबलबाज बीचार सबदि सुणाइआ ॥

Ŧabalabaaj beechaar sabađi suñaaīâa ||

The Drummer, the Guru, has announced the Lord's meditation, through the Word of the Shabad.

ਇਕਿ ਹੋਏ ਅਸਵਾਰ ਇਕਨਾ ਸਾਖਤੀ ॥

इकि होए असवार इकना साखती ॥

Īki hoē âsavaar īkanaa saakhaŧee ||

Some have mounted their horses in response, and others are saddling up.

ਇਕਨੀ ਬਧੇ ਭਾਰ ਇਕਨਾ ਤਾਖਤੀ ॥੧੦॥

इकनी बधे भार इकना ताखती ॥१०॥

Īkanee bađhe bhaar īkanaa ŧaakhaŧee ||10||

Some have tied up their bridles, and others have already ridden off. ||10||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਜਾ ਪਕਾ ਤਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਰਹੀ ਸੁ ਪਲਰਿ ਵਾੜਿ ॥

जा पका ता कटिआ रही सु पलरि वाड़ि ॥

Jaa pakaa ŧaa katiâa rahee su palari vaaɍi ||

When the crop is ripe, then it is cut down; only the stalks are left standing.

ਸਣੁ ਕੀਸਾਰਾ ਚਿਥਿਆ ਕਣੁ ਲਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਝਾੜਿ ॥

सणु कीसारा चिथिआ कणु लइआ तनु झाड़ि ॥

Sañu keesaaraa chiŧhiâa kañu laīâa ŧanu jhaaɍi ||

The corn on the cob is put into the thresher, and the kernels are separated from the cobs.

ਦੁਇ ਪੁੜ ਚਕੀ ਜੋੜਿ ਕੈ ਪੀਸਣ ਆਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥

दुइ पुड़ चकी जोड़ि कै पीसण आइ बहिठु ॥

Đuī puɍ chakee joɍi kai peesañ âaī bahithu ||

Placing the kernels between the two mill-stones, people sit and grind the corn.

ਜੋ ਦਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਜਬੁ ਡਿਠੁ ॥੧॥

जो दरि रहे सु उबरे नानक अजबु डिठु ॥१॥

Jo đari rahe su ūbare naanak âjabu dithu ||1||

Those kernels which stick to the central axle are spared-Nanak has seen this wonderful vision! ||1||

ਵੇਖੁ ਜਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਬਧਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

वेखु जि मिठा कटिआ कटि कुटि बधा पाइ ॥

Vekhu ji mithaa katiâa kati kuti bađhaa paaī ||

Look, and see how the sugar-cane is cut down. After cutting away its branches, its feet are bound together into bundles,

ਖੁੰਢਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਲ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

खुंढा अंदरि रखि कै देनि सु मल सजाइ ॥

Khunddhaa ânđđari rakhi kai đeni su mal sajaaī ||

And then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed.

ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਟਟਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਪੈ ਤੈ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥

रसु कसु टटरि पाईऐ तपै तै विललाइ ॥

Rasu kasu tatari paaëeâi ŧapai ŧai vilalaaī ||

What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out.

ਭੀ ਸੋ ਫੋਗੁ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ਦਿਚੈ ਅਗਿ ਜਾਲਾਇ ॥

भी सो फोगु समालीऐ दिचै अगि जालाइ ॥

Bhee so phogu samaaleeâi đichai âgi jaalaaī ||

And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਠੈ ਪਤਰੀਐ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਆਇ ॥੨॥

नानक मिठै पतरीऐ वेखहु लोका आइ ॥२॥

Naanak mithai paŧareeâi vekhahu lokaa âaī ||2||

Nanak: come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated! ||2||

ਇਕਨਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਸ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ ॥

इकना मरणु न चिति आस घणेरिआ ॥

Īkanaa marañu na chiŧi âas ghañeriâa ||

Some do not think of death; they entertain great hopes.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰਿਆ ॥

मरि मरि जमहि नित किसै न केरिआ ॥

Mari mari jammahi niŧ kisai na keriâa ||

They die, and are re-born, and die, over and over again. They are of no use at all!

ਆਪਨੜੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਹਨਿ ਚੰਗੇਰਿਆ ॥

आपनड़ै मनि चिति कहनि चंगेरिआ ॥

Âapanaɍai mani chiŧi kahani changgeriâa ||

In their conscious minds, they call themselves good.

ਜਮਰਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੇਰਿਆ ॥

जमराजै नित नित मनमुख हेरिआ ॥

Jamaraajai niŧ niŧ manamukh heriâa ||

The King of the Angels of Death hunts down those self-willed manmukhs, over and over again.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੂਣ ਹਾਰਾਮ ਕਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

मनमुख लूण हाराम किआ न जाणिआ ॥

Manamukh looñ haaraam kiâa na jaañiâa ||

The manmukhs are false to their own selves; they feel no gratitude for what they have been given.

ਬਧੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਲਾਮ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਭਾਣਿਆ ॥

बधे करनि सलाम खसम न भाणिआ ॥

Bađhe karani salaam khasam na bhaañiâa ||

Those who merely perform rituals of worship are not pleasing to their Lord and Master.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥

सचु मिलै मुखि नामु साहिब भावसी ॥

Sachu milai mukhi naamu saahib bhaavasee ||

Those who attain the True Lord and chant His Name are pleasing to the Lord.

ਕਰਸਨਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੧॥

करसनि तखति सलामु लिखिआ पावसी ॥११॥

Karasani ŧakhaŧi salaamu likhiâa paavasee ||11||

They worship the Lord and bow at His Throne. They fulfill their pre-ordained destiny. ||11||

ਮਛੀ ਤਾਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਕਿਆ ਆਕਾਸੁ ॥

मछी तारू किआ करे पंखी किआ आकासु ॥

Machhee ŧaaroo kiâa kare pankkhee kiâa âakaasu ||

What can deep water do to a fish? What can the vast sky do to a bird?

ਪਥਰ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

पथर पाला किआ करे खुसरे किआ घर वासु ॥

Paŧhar paalaa kiâa kare khusare kiâa ghar vaasu ||

What can cold do to a stone? What is married life to a eunuch?

ਕੁਤੇ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਕੁਤੀ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

कुते चंदनु लाईऐ भी सो कुती धातु ॥

Kuŧe chanđđanu laaëeâi bhee so kuŧee đhaaŧu ||

You may apply sandalwood oil to a dog, but he will still be a dog.

ਬੋਲਾ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠ ॥

बोला जे समझाईऐ पड़ीअहि सिम्रिति पाठ ॥

Bolaa je samajhaaëeâi paɍeeâhi simmmriŧi paath ||

You may try to teach a deaf person by reading the Simritees to him, but how will he learn?

ਅੰਧਾ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਲਹਿ ਪਚਾਸ ॥

अंधा चानणि रखीऐ दीवे बलहि पचास ॥

Ânđđhaa chaanañi rakheeâi đeeve balahi pachaas ||

You may place a light before a blind man and burn fifty lamps, but how will he see?

ਚਉਣੇ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਵੈ ਘਾਸੁ ॥

चउणे सुइना पाईऐ चुणि चुणि खावै घासु ॥

Chaūñe suīnaa paaëeâi chuñi chuñi khaavai ghaasu ||

You may place gold before a herd of cattle, but they will pick out the grass to eat.

ਲੋਹਾ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਢਹੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਪਾਸ ॥

लोहा मारणि पाईऐ ढहै न होइ कपास ॥

Lohaa maarañi paaëeâi dhahai na hoī kapaas ||

You may add flux to iron and melt it, but it will not become soft like cotton.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਏਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

नानक मूरख एहि गुण बोले सदा विणासु ॥१॥

Naanak moorakh ēhi guñ bole sađaa viñaasu ||1||

O Nanak, this is the nature of a fool-everything he speaks is useless and wasted. ||1||

ਕੈਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

कैहा कंचनु तुटै सारु ॥

Kaihaa kancchanu ŧutai saaru ||

When pieces of bronze or gold or iron break,

ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥

अगनी गंढु पाए लोहारु ॥

Âganee ganddhu paaē lohaaru ||

The metal-smith welds them together again in the fire, and the bond is established.

ਗੋਰੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਤੁਟੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥

गोरी सेती तुटै भतारु ॥

Goree seŧee ŧutai bhaŧaaru ||

If a husband leaves his wife,

ਪੁਤੀਂ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

पुतीं गंढु पवै संसारि ॥

Puŧeen ganddhu pavai sanssaari ||

Their children may bring them back together in the world, and the bond is established.

ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

राजा मंगै दितै गंढु पाइ ॥

Raajaa manggai điŧai ganddhu paaī ||

When the king makes a demand, and it is met, the bond is established.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

भुखिआ गंढु पवै जा खाइ ॥

Bhukhiâa ganddhu pavai jaa khaaī ||

When the hungry man eats, he is satisfied, and the bond is established.

ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ ॥

काला गंढु नदीआ मीह झोल ॥

Kaalaa ganddhu nađeeâa meeh jhol ||

In the famine, the rain fills the streams to overflowing, and the bond is established.

ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ॥

गंढु परीती मिठे बोल ॥

Ganddhu pareeŧee mithe bol ||

There is a bond between love and words of sweetness.

ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

बेदा गंढु बोले सचु कोइ ॥

Beđaa ganddhu bole sachu koī ||

When one speaks the Truth, a bond is established with the Holy Scriptures.

ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਨੇਕੀ ਸਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

मुइआ गंढु नेकी सतु होइ ॥

Muīâa ganddhu nekee saŧu hoī ||

Through goodness and truth, the dead establish a bond with the living.

ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

एतु गंढि वरतै संसारु ॥

Ēŧu ganddhi varaŧai sanssaaru ||

Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.

ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਾਰ ॥

मूरख गंढु पवै मुहि मार ॥

Moorakh ganddhu pavai muhi maar ||

The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

नानकु आखै एहु बीचारु ॥

Naanaku âakhai ēhu beechaaru ||

Nanak says this after deep reflection:

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

सिफती गंढु पवै दरबारि ॥२॥

Siphaŧee ganddhu pavai đarabaari ||2||

Through the Lord's Praise, we establish a bond with His Court. ||2||

Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

आपे कुदरति साजि कै आपे करे बीचारु ॥

Âape kuđaraŧi saaji kai âape kare beechaaru ||

He Himself created and adorned the Universe, and He Himself contemplates it.

ਇਕਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

इकि खोटे इकि खरे आपे परखणहारु ॥

Īki khote īki khare âape parakhañahaaru ||

Some are counterfeit, and some are genuine. He Himself is the Appraiser.

ਖਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਾਰਿ ॥

खरे खजानै पाईअहि खोटे सटीअहि बाहर वारि ॥

Khare khajaanai paaëeâhi khote sateeâhi baahar vaari ||

The genuine are placed in His Treasury, while the counterfeit are thrown away.

ਖੋਟੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

खोटे सची दरगह सुटीअहि किसु आगै करहि पुकार ॥

Khote sachee đaragah suteeâhi kisu âagai karahi pukaar ||

The counterfeit are thrown out of the True Court-unto whom should they complain?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਛੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

सतिगुर पिछै भजि पवहि एहा करणी सारु ॥

Saŧigur pichhai bhaji pavahi ēhaa karañee saaru ||

They should worship and follow the True Guru-this is the lifestyle of excellence.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਖੋਟਿਅਹੁ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

सतिगुरु खोटिअहु खरे करे सबदि सवारणहारु ॥

Saŧiguru khotiâhu khare kare sabađi savaarañahaaru ||

The True Guru converts the counterfeit into genuine; through the Word of the Shabad, He embellishes and exalts us.

ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

सची दरगह मंनीअनि गुर कै प्रेम पिआरि ॥

Sachee đaragah manneeâni gur kai prem piâari ||

Those who have enshrined love and affection for the Guru, are honored in the True Court.

ਗਣਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥

गणत तिना दी को किआ करे जो आपि बखसे करतारि ॥१२॥

Gañaŧ ŧinaa đee ko kiâa kare jo âapi bakhase karaŧaari ||12||

Who can estimate the value of those who have been forgiven by the Creator Lord Himself? ||12||

ਹਮ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪੀਰਾ ਮਸਾਇਕਾ ਰਾਇਆ ॥

हम जेर जिमी दुनीआ पीरा मसाइका राइआ ॥

Ham jer jimee đuneeâa peeraa masaaīkaa raaīâa ||

All the spiritual teachers, their disciples and the rulers of the world shall be buried under the ground.

ਮੇ ਰਵਦਿ ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹਾ ਅਫਜੂ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

मे रवदि बादिसाहा अफजू खुदाइ ॥

Me ravađi baađisaahaa âphajoo khuđaaī ||

The emperors shall also pass away; God alone is Eternal.

ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਏਕ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੧॥

एक तूही एक तुही ॥१॥

Ēk ŧoohee ēk ŧuhee ||1||

You alone, Lord, You alone. ||1||

न सिध साधिका धरा ॥

Na siđh saađhikaa đharaa ||

Nor the Siddhas, nor the seekers shall remain on the earth.

ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ ॥

असति एक दिगरि कुई ॥

Âsaŧi ēk đigari kuëe ||

Who else is there?

ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ॥੨॥

एक तुई एक तुई ॥२॥

You alone, Lord, You alone. ||2||

Neither the just, nor the generous, nor any humans at all,

ਨ ਸਪਤ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ॥

न सपत जेर जिमी ॥

Na sapaŧ jer jimee ||

Nor the seven realms beneath the earth, shall remain.

ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ ॥

असति एक दिगरि कुई ॥

Âsaŧi ēk đigari kuëe ||

The One Lord alone exists. Who else is there?

ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ॥੩॥

ਨ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਨਹ ਜਲੋ ॥

न सपत दीप नह जलो ॥

Na sapaŧ đeep nah jalo ||

Nor the seven continents, nor the oceans,

ਅੰਨ ਪਉਣ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਕੁਈ ॥

अंन पउण थिरु न कुई ॥

Ânn paūñ ŧhiru na kuëe ||

Nor food, nor the wind-nothing is permanent.

ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ॥੪॥

एकु तुई एकु तुई ॥४॥

Ēku ŧuëe ēku ŧuëe ||4||

You alone, Lord, You alone. ||4||

ਨ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਦਸਤ ਆ ਕਸੇ ॥

Our sustenance is not in the hands of any person.

ਹਮਾ ਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਆਸ ਵਸੇ ॥

हमा रा एकु आस वसे ॥

Hamaa raa ēku âas vase ||

The hopes of all rest in the One Lord.

ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕੁ ਦਿਗਰ ਕੁਈ ॥

असति एकु दिगर कुई ॥

Âsaŧi ēku đigar kuëe ||

The One Lord alone exists-who else is there?

ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ॥੫॥

एक तुई एकु तुई ॥५॥

Ēk ŧuëe ēku ŧuëe ||5||

You alone, Lord, You alone. ||5||

Paranđđaē na giraah jar ||

The birds have no money in their pockets.

ਦਰਖਤ ਆਬ ਆਸ ਕਰ ॥

दरखत आब आस कर ॥

Đarakhaŧ âab âas kar ||

They place their hopes on trees and water.

ਦਿਹੰਦ ਸੁਈ ॥

दिहंद सुई ॥

Đihanđđ suëe ||

He alone is the Giver.

ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ॥੬॥

एक तुई एक तुई ॥६॥

O Nanak, that destiny which is pre-ordained and written on one's forehead

ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

मेटि न साकै कोइ ॥

Meti na saakai koī ||

No one can erase it.

ਕਲਾ ਧਰੈ ਹਿਰੈ ਸੁਈ ॥

कला धरै हिरै सुई ॥

Kalaa đharai hirai suëe ||

The Lord infuses strength, and He takes it away again.

ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ॥੭॥

एकु तुई एकु तुई ॥७॥

Ēku ŧuëe ēku ŧuëe ||7||

You alone, O Lord, You alone. ||7||

Pauree:

ਸਚਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

सचा तेरा हुकमु गुरमुखि जाणिआ ॥

Sachaa ŧeraa hukamu guramukhi jaañiâa ||

True is the Hukam of Your Command. To the Gurmukh, it is known.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥

गुरमती आपु गवाइ सचु पछाणिआ ॥

Guramaŧee âapu gavaaī sachu pachhaañiâa ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, selfishness and conceit are eradicated, and the Truth is realized.

ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਣਿਆ ॥

सचु तेरा दरबारु सबदु नीसाणिआ ॥

Sachu ŧeraa đarabaaru sabađu neesaañiâa ||

True is Your Court. It is proclaimed and revealed through the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ॥

सचा सबदु वीचारि सचि समाणिआ ॥

Sachaa sabađu veechaari sachi samaañiâa ||

Meditating deeply on the True Word of the Shabad, I have merged into the Truth.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਿਆ ॥

मनमुख सदा कूड़िआर भरमि भुलाणिआ ॥

Manamukh sađaa kooɍiâar bharami bhulaañiâa ||

The self-willed manmukhs are always false; they are deluded by doubt.

ਵਿਸਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

विसटा अंदरि वासु सादु न जाणिआ ॥

Visataa ânđđari vaasu saađu na jaañiâa ||

They dwell in manure, and they do not know the taste of the Name.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

विणु नावै दुखु पाइ आवण जाणिआ ॥

Viñu naavai đukhu paaī âavañ jaañiâa ||

Without the Name, they suffer the agonies of coming and going.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਖੋਟਾ ਖਰਾ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥੧੩॥

नानक पारखु आपि जिनि खोटा खरा पछाणिआ ॥१३॥

Naanak paarakhu âapi jini khotaa kharaa pachhaañiâa ||13||

O Nanak, the Lord Himself is the Appraiser, who distinguishes the counterfeit from the genuine. ||13||

ਸੀਹਾ ਬਾਜਾ ਚਰਗਾ ਕੁਹੀਆ ਏਨਾ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਘਾਹ ॥

सीहा बाजा चरगा कुहीआ एना खवाले घाह ॥

Seehaa baajaa charagaa kuheeâa ēnaa khavaale ghaah ||

Tigers, hawks, falcons and eagles-the Lord could make them eat grass.

ਘਾਹੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਏਹਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਰਾਹ ॥

घाहु खानि तिना मासु खवाले एहि चलाए राह ॥

Ghaahu khaani ŧinaa maasu khavaale ēhi chalaaē raah ||

And those animals which eat grass-He could make them eat meat. He could make them follow this way of life.

ਨਦੀਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਟਿਬੇ ਦੇਖਾਲੇ ਥਲੀ ਕਰੇ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥

नदीआ विचि टिबे देखाले थली करे असगाह ॥

Nađeeâa vichi tibe đekhaale ŧhalee kare âsagaah ||

He could raise dry land from the rivers, and turn the deserts into bottomless oceans.

ਕੀੜਾ ਥਾਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਆਹ ॥

कीड़ा थापि देइ पातिसाही लसकर करे सुआह ॥

Keeɍaa ŧhaapi đeī paaŧisaahee lasakar kare suâah ||

He could appoint a worm as king, and reduce an army to ashes.

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਲੈ ਸਾਹਾ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਤਾ ਕਿ ਅਸਾਹ ॥

जेते जीअ जीवहि लै साहा जीवाले ता कि असाह ॥

Jeŧe jeeâ jeevahi lai saahaa jeevaale ŧaa ki âsaah ||

All beings and creatures live by breathing, but He could keep us alive, even without the breath.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਸਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਦੇਇ ਗਿਰਾਹ ॥੧॥

नानक जिउ जिउ सचे भावै तिउ तिउ देइ गिराह ॥१॥

Naanak jiū jiū sache bhaavai ŧiū ŧiū đeī giraah ||1||

O Nanak, as it pleases the True Lord, He gives us sustenance. ||1||

ਇਕਿ ਮਾਸਹਾਰੀ ਇਕਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

इकि मासहारी इकि त्रिणु खाहि ॥

Īki maasahaaree īki ŧriñu khaahi ||

Some eat meat, while others eat grass.

ਇਕਨਾ ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

इकना छतीह अम्रित पाहि ॥

Īkanaa chhaŧeeh âmmmriŧ paahi ||

Some have all the thirty-six varieties of delicacies,

ਇਕਿ ਮਿਟੀਆ ਮਹਿ ਮਿਟੀਆ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

इकि मिटीआ महि मिटीआ खाहि ॥

Īki miteeâa mahi miteeâa khaahi ||

While others live in the dirt and eat mud.

ਇਕਿ ਪਉਣ ਸੁਮਾਰੀ ਪਉਣ ਸੁਮਾਰਿ ॥

इकि पउण सुमारी पउण सुमारि ॥

Īki paūñ sumaaree paūñ sumaari ||

Some control the breath, and regulate their breathing.

ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਆਧਾਰਿ ॥

इकि निरंकारी नाम आधारि ॥

Īki nirankkaaree naam âađhaari ||

Some live by the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Formless Lord.

ਜੀਵੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

जीवै दाता मरै न कोइ ॥

Jeevai đaaŧaa marai na koī ||

The Great Giver lives; no one dies.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਠੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक मुठे जाहि नाही मनि सोइ ॥२॥

Naanak muthe jaahi naahee mani soī ||2||

O Nanak, those who do not enshrine the Lord within their minds are deluded. ||2||

Pauree:

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਮਿ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

पूरे गुर की कार करमि कमाईऐ ॥

Poore gur kee kaar karami kamaaëeâi ||

By the karma of good actions, some come to serve the Perfect Guru.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

गुरमती आपु गवाइ नामु धिआईऐ ॥

Guramaŧee âapu gavaaī naamu đhiâaëeâi ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, some eliminate selfishness and conceit, and meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਦੂਜੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥

दूजी कारै लगि जनमु गवाईऐ ॥

Đoojee kaarai lagi janamu gavaaëeâi ||

Undertaking any other task, they waste their lives in vain.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਵਿਸੁ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥

विणु नावै सभ विसु पैझै खाईऐ ॥

Viñu naavai sabh visu paijhai khaaëeâi ||

Without the Name, all that they wear and eat is poison.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥

सचा सबदु सालाहि सचि समाईऐ ॥

Sachaa sabađu saalaahi sachi samaaëeâi ||

Praising the True Word of the Shabad, they merge with the True Lord.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਈਐ ॥

विणु सतिगुरु सेवे नाही सुखि निवासु फिरि फिरि आईऐ ॥

Viñu saŧiguru seve naahee sukhi nivaasu phiri phiri âaëeâi ||

Without serving the True Guru, they do not obtain the home of peace; they are consigned to reincarnation, over and over again.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

दुनीआ खोटी रासि कूड़ु कमाईऐ ॥

Đuneeâa khotee raasi kooɍu kamaaëeâi ||

Investing counterfeit capital, they earn only falsehood in the world.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਖਰਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧੪॥

नानक सचु खरा सालाहि पति सिउ जाईऐ ॥१४॥

Naanak sachu kharaa saalaahi paŧi siū jaaëeâi ||14||

O Nanak, singing the Praises of the Pure, True Lord, they depart with honor. ||14||

ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਵਾਵਹਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥

तुधु भावै ता वावहि गावहि तुधु भावै जलि नावहि ॥

Ŧuđhu bhaavai ŧaa vaavahi gaavahi ŧuđhu bhaavai jali naavahi ||

When it pleases You, we play music and sing; when it pleases You, we bathe in water.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਾ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਹਿ ॥

जा तुधु भावहि ता करहि बिभूता सिंङी नादु वजावहि ॥

Jaa ŧuđhu bhaavahi ŧaa karahi bibhooŧaa sinǹǹee naađu vajaavahi ||

When it pleases You, we smear our bodies with ashes, and blow the horn and the conch shell.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਮੁਲਾ ਸੇਖ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥

जा तुधु भावै ता पड़हि कतेबा मुला सेख कहावहि ॥

Jaa ŧuđhu bhaavai ŧaa paɍahi kaŧebaa mulaa sekh kahaavahi ||

When it pleases You, we read the Islamic Scriptures, and are acclaimed as Mullahs and Shaykhs.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥

जा तुधु भावै ता होवहि राजे रस कस बहुतु कमावहि ॥

Jaa ŧuđhu bhaavai ŧaa hovahi raaje ras kas bahuŧu kamaavahi ||

When it pleases You, we become kings, and enjoy all sorts of tastes and pleasures.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਰ ਮੁੰਡੀ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥

जा तुधु भावै तेग वगावहि सिर मुंडी कटि जावहि ॥

Jaa ŧuđhu bhaavai ŧeg vagaavahi sir munddee kati jaavahi ||

When it pleases You, we wield the sword, and cut off the heads of our enemies.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥

जा तुधु भावै जाहि दिसंतरि सुणि गला घरि आवहि ॥

Jaa ŧuđhu bhaavai jaahi đisanŧŧari suñi galaa ghari âavahi ||

When it pleases You, we go out to foreign lands; hearing news of home, we come back again.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਇ ਰਚਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥

जा तुधु भावै नाइ रचावहि तुधु भाणे तूं भावहि ॥

Jaa ŧuđhu bhaavai naaī rachaavahi ŧuđhu bhaañe ŧoonn bhaavahi ||

When it pleases You, we are attuned to the Name, and when it pleases You, we become pleasing to You.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥

नानकु एक कहै बेनंती होरि सगले कूड़ु कमावहि ॥१॥

Naanaku ēk kahai benanŧŧee hori sagale kooɍu kamaavahi ||1||

Nanak utters this one prayer; everything else is just the practice of falsehood. ||1||

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਵਡਾ ਸਭਿ ਵਡਿਆਂਈਆ ਚੰਗੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

जा तूं वडा सभि वडिआंईआ चंगै चंगा होई ॥

Jaa ŧoonn vadaa sabhi vadiâanëeâa changgai changgaa hoëe ||

You are so Great-all Greatness flows from You. You are So Good-Goodness radiates from You.

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਕੂੜਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

जा तूं सचा ता सभु को सचा कूड़ा कोइ न कोई ॥

Jaa ŧoonn sachaa ŧaa sabhu ko sachaa kooɍaa koī na koëe ||

You are True-all that flows from You is True. Nothing at all is false.

ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਚਲਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

आखणु वेखणु बोलणु चलणु जीवणु मरणा धातु ॥

Âakhañu vekhañu bolañu chalañu jeevañu marañaa đhaaŧu ||

Talking, seeing, speaking, walking, living and dying-all these are transitory.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥

हुकमु साजि हुकमै विचि रखै नानक सचा आपि ॥२॥

Hukamu saaji hukamai vichi rakhai naanak sachaa âapi ||2||

By the Hukam of His Command, He creates, and in His Command, He keeps us. O Nanak, He Himself is True. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਸੰਗੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਈਐ ॥

सतिगुरु सेवि निसंगु भरमु चुकाईऐ ॥

Saŧiguru sevi nisanggu bharamu chukaaëeâi ||

Serve the True Guru fearlessly, and your doubt shall be dispelled.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੈ ਕਾਰ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

सतिगुरु आखै कार सु कार कमाईऐ ॥

Saŧiguru âakhai kaar su kaar kamaaëeâi ||

Do that work which the True Guru asks you to do.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

सतिगुरु होइ दइआलु त नामु धिआईऐ ॥

Saŧiguru hoī đaīâalu ŧa naamu đhiâaëeâi ||

When the True Guru becomes merciful, we meditate on the Naam.

ਲਾਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

लाहा भगति सु सारु गुरमुखि पाईऐ ॥

Laahaa bhagaŧi su saaru guramukhi paaëeâi ||

The profit of devotional worship is excellent. It is obtained by the Gurmukh.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

मनमुखि कूड़ु गुबारु कूड़ु कमाईऐ ॥

Manamukhi kooɍu gubaaru kooɍu kamaaëeâi ||

The self-willed manmukhs are trapped in the darkness of falsehood; they practice nothing but falsehood.

ਸਚੇ ਦੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਚਵਾਂਈਐ ॥

सचे दै दरि जाइ सचु चवांईऐ ॥

Sache đai đari jaaī sachu chavaanëeâi ||

Go to the Gate of Truth, and speak the Truth.

ਸਚੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥

सचै अंदरि महलि सचि बुलाईऐ ॥

Sachai ânđđari mahali sachi bulaaëeâi ||

The True Lord calls the true ones to the Mansion of His Presence.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੧੫॥

नानक सचु सदा सचिआरु सचि समाईऐ ॥१५॥

Naanak sachu sađaa sachiâaru sachi samaaëeâi ||15||

O Nanak, the true ones are forever true; they are absorbed in the True Lord. ||15||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਕਲਿ ਕਾਤੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਕਾਸਾਈ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੰਖ ਕਰਿ ਉਡਰਿਆ ॥

कलि काती राजे कासाई धरमु पंख करि उडरिआ ॥

Kali kaaŧee raaje kaasaaëe đharamu pankkh kari ūdariâa ||

The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the knife, and the kings are butchers; righteousness has sprouted wings and flown away.

ਕੂੜੁ ਅਮਾਵਸ ਸਚੁ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹ ਚੜਿਆ ॥

कूड़ु अमावस सचु चंद्रमा दीसै नाही कह चड़िआ ॥

Kooɍu âmaavas sachu chanđđrmaa đeesai naahee kah chaɍiâa ||

In this dark night of falsehood, the moon of Truth is not visible anywhere.

ਹਉ ਭਾਲਿ ਵਿਕੁੰਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

हउ भालि विकुंनी होई ॥

Haū bhaali vikunnee hoëe ||

I have searched in vain, and I am so confused;

ਆਧੇਰੈ ਰਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

आधेरै राहु न कोई ॥

Âađherai raahu na koëe ||

In this darkness, I cannot find the path.

ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਈ ॥

विचि हउमै करि दुखु रोई ॥

Vichi haūmai kari đukhu roëe ||

In egotism, they cry out in pain.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਨਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

कहु नानक किनि बिधि गति होई ॥१॥

Kahu naanak kini biđhi gaŧi hoëe ||1||

Says Nanak, how will they be saved? ||1||


ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Third Mehl:

ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

कलि कीरति परगटु चानणु संसारि ॥

Kali keeraŧi paragatu chaanañu sanssaari ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praise has appeared as a Light in the world.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਉਤਰੈ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

गुरमुखि कोई उतरै पारि ॥

Guramukhi koëe ūŧarai paari ||

How rare are those few Gurmukhs who swim across to the other side!

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥

जिस नो नदरि करे तिसु देवै ॥

Jis no nađari kare ŧisu đevai ||

The Lord bestows His Glance of Grace;

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੋ ਲੇਵੈ ॥੨॥

नानक गुरमुखि रतनु सो लेवै ॥२॥

Naanak guramukhi raŧanu so levai ||2||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh receives the jewel. ||2||

ਭਗਤਾ ਤੈ ਸੈਸਾਰੀਆ ਜੋੜੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥

Bhagaŧaa ŧai saisaareeâa joɍu kađe na âaīâa ||

Between the Lord's devotees and the people of the world, there can never be any true alliance.

ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਦਾ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥

करता आपि अभुलु है न भुलै किसै दा भुलाइआ ॥

Karaŧaa âapi âbhulu hai na bhulai kisai đaa bhulaaīâa ||

The Creator Himself is infallible. He cannot be fooled; no one can fool Him.

ਭਗਤ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

भगत आपे मेलिअनु जिनी सचो सचु कमाइआ ॥

Bhagaŧ âape meliânu jinee sacho sachu kamaaīâa ||

He blends His devotees with Himself; they practice Truth, and only Truth.

ਸੈਸਾਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

सैसारी आपि खुआइअनु जिनी कूड़ु बोलि बोलि बिखु खाइआ ॥

Saisaaree âapi khuâaīânu jinee kooɍu boli boli bikhu khaaīâa ||

The Lord Himself leads the people of the world astray; they tell lies, and by telling lies, they eat poison.

ਚਲਣ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਵਿਸੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥

चलण सार न जाणनी कामु करोधु विसु वधाइआ ॥

Chalañ saar na jaañanee kaamu karođhu visu vađhaaīâa ||

They do not recognize the ultimate reality, that we all must go; they continue to cultivate the poisons of sexual desire and anger.

ਭਗਤ ਕਰਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

भगत करनि हरि चाकरी जिनी अनदिनु नामु धिआइआ ॥

Bhagaŧ karani hari chaakaree jinee ânađinu naamu đhiâaīâa ||

The devotees serve the Lord; night and day, they meditate on the Naam.

ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜਿਨੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

दासनि दास होइ कै जिनी विचहु आपु गवाइआ ॥

Đaasani đaas hoī kai jinee vichahu âapu gavaaīâa ||

Becoming the slaves of the Lord's slaves, they eradicate selfishness and conceit from within.

ਓਨਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥

ओना खसमै कै दरि मुख उजले सचै सबदि सुहाइआ ॥१६॥

Õnaa khasamai kai đari mukh ūjale sachai sabađi suhaaīâa ||16||

In the Court of their Lord and Master, their faces are radiant; they are embellished and exalted with the True Word of the Shabad. ||16||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਸਬਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ॥

सबाही सालाह जिनी धिआइआ इक मनि ॥

Sabaahee saalaah jinee đhiâaīâa īk mani ||

Those who praise the Lord in the early hours of the morning and meditate on Him single-mindedly,

ਸੇਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਹ ਵਖਤੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਲੜਿ ਮੁਏ ॥

सेई पूरे साह वखतै उपरि लड़ि मुए ॥

Seëe poore saah vakhaŧai ūpari laɍi muē ||

Are the perfect kings; at the right time, they die fighting.

ਦੂਜੈ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਰਾਹ ਮਨ ਕੀਆ ਮਤੀ ਖਿੰਡੀਆ ॥

दूजै बहुते राह मन कीआ मती खिंडीआ ॥

Đoojai bahuŧe raah man keeâa maŧee khinddeeâa ||

In the second watch, the focus of the mind is scattered in all sorts of ways.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਏ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਹਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ॥

बहुतु पए असगाह गोते खाहि न निकलहि ॥

Bahuŧu paē âsagaah goŧe khaahi na nikalahi ||

So many fall into the bottomless pit; they are dragged under, and they cannot get out again.

ਤੀਜੈ ਮੁਹੀ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਭੁਖ ਤਿਖਾ ਦੁਇ ਭਉਕੀਆ ॥

तीजै मुही गिराह भुख तिखा दुइ भउकीआ ॥

Ŧeejai muhee giraah bhukh ŧikhaa đuī bhaūkeeâa ||

In the third watch, both hunger and thirst bark for attention, and food is put into the mouth.

ਖਾਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਆਹ ਭੀ ਖਾਣੇ ਸਿਉ ਦੋਸਤੀ ॥

खाधा होइ सुआह भी खाणे सिउ दोसती ॥

Khaađhaa hoī suâah bhee khaañe siū đosaŧee ||

That which is eaten becomes dust, but they are still attached to eating.

ਚਉਥੈ ਆਈ ਊਂਘ ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟਿ ਪਵਾਰਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

चउथै आई ऊंघ अखी मीटि पवारि गइआ ॥

Chaūŧhai âaëe ǖngh âkhee meeti pavaari gaīâa ||

In the fourth watch, they become drowsy. They close their eyes and begin to dream.

ਭੀ ਉਠਿ ਰਚਿਓਨੁ ਵਾਦੁ ਸੈ ਵਰ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆ ਕੀ ਪਿੜ ਬਧੀ ॥

भी उठि रचिओनु वादु सै वर्हिआ की पिड़ बधी ॥

Bhee ūthi rachiõnu vaađu sai varʱiâa kee piɍ bađhee ||

Rising up again, they engage in conflicts; they set the stage as if they will live for 100 years.

ਸਭੇ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤ ਸਭਿ ਜੇ ਅਠੀ ਭਉ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभे वेला वखत सभि जे अठी भउ होइ ॥

Sabhe velaa vakhaŧ sabhi je âthee bhaū hoī ||

If at all times, at each and every moment, they live in the fear of God

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

नानक साहिबु मनि वसै सचा नावणु होइ ॥१॥

Naanak saahibu mani vasai sachaa naavañu hoī ||1||

-O Nanak, the Lord dwells within their minds, and their cleansing bath is true. ||1||

Second Mehl:

ਸੇਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਹ ਜਿਨੀ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

सेई पूरे साह जिनी पूरा पाइआ ॥

Seëe poore saah jinee pooraa paaīâa ||

They are the perfect kings, who have found the Perfect Lord.

ਅਠੀ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਰਹਨਿ ਇਕਤੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥

अठी वेपरवाह रहनि इकतै रंगि ॥

Âthee veparavaah rahani īkaŧai ranggi ||

Twenty-four hours a day, they remain unconcerned, imbued with the Love of the One Lord.

ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਥਾਹ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ॥

दरसनि रूपि अथाह विरले पाईअहि ॥

Đarasani roopi âŧhaah virale paaëeâhi ||

Only a few obtain the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of the Unimaginably Beauteous Lord.

ਕਰਮਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਬੋਲੁ ॥

करमि पूरै पूरा गुरू पूरा जा का बोलु ॥

Karami poorai pooraa guroo pooraa jaa kaa bolu ||

Through the perfect karma of good deeds, one meets the Perfect Guru, whose speech is perfect.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਘਟੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੋਲੁ ॥੨॥

नानक पूरा जे करे घटै नाही तोलु ॥२॥

Naanak pooraa je kare ghatai naahee ŧolu ||2||

O Nanak, when the Guru makes one perfect, one's weight does not decrease. ||2||

Pauree:

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਰਿ ਮੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥

जा तूं ता किआ होरि मै सचु सुणाईऐ ॥

Jaa ŧoonn ŧaa kiâa hori mai sachu suñaaëeâi ||

When You are with me, what more could I want? I speak only the Truth.

ਮੁਠੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਚੋਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

मुठी धंधै चोरि महलु न पाईऐ ॥

Muthee đhanđđhai chori mahalu na paaëeâi ||

Plundered by the thieves of worldly affairs, she does not obtain the Mansion of His Presence.

ਏਨੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਠੋਰਿ ਸੇਵ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥

एनै चिति कठोरि सेव गवाईऐ ॥

Ēnai chiŧi kathori sev gavaaëeâi ||

Being so stone-hearted, she has lost her chance to serve the Lord.

ਜਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਸੁ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਈਐ ॥

जितु घटि सचु न पाइ सु भंनि घड़ाईऐ ॥

Jiŧu ghati sachu na paaī su bhanni ghaɍaaëeâi ||

That heart, in which the True Lord is not found, should be torn down and re-built.

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਵਟਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੁਲਾਈਐ ॥

किउ करि पूरै वटि तोलि तुलाईऐ ॥

Kiū kari poorai vati ŧoli ŧulaaëeâi ||

How can she be weighed accurately, upon the scale of perfection?

ਕੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੈ ਘਟਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

कोइ न आखै घटि हउमै जाईऐ ॥

Koī na âakhai ghati haūmai jaaëeâi ||

No one will say that her weight has been shorted, if she rids herself of egotism.

ਲਈਅਨਿ ਖਰੇ ਪਰਖਿ ਦਰਿ ਬੀਨਾਈਐ ॥

लईअनि खरे परखि दरि बीनाईऐ ॥

Laëeâni khare parakhi đari beenaaëeâi ||

The genuine are assayed, and accepted in the Court of the All-knowing Lord.

ਸਉਦਾ ਇਕਤੁ ਹਟਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧੭॥

सउदा इकतु हटि पूरै गुरि पाईऐ ॥१७॥

Saūđaa īkaŧu hati poorai guri paaëeâi ||17||

The genuine merchandise is found only in one shop-it is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||17||

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਅਠੀ ਪਹਰੀ ਅਠ ਖੰਡ ਨਾਵਾ ਖੰਡੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥

अठी पहरी अठ खंड नावा खंडु सरीरु ॥

Âthee paharee âth khandd naavaa khanddu sareeru ||

Twenty-four hours a day, destroy the eight things, and in the ninth place, conquer the body.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਭਾਲਹਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥

तिसु विचि नउ निधि नामु एकु भालहि गुणी गहीरु ॥

Ŧisu vichi naū niđhi naamu ēku bhaalahi guñee gaheeru ||

Within the body are the nine treasures of the Name of the Lord-seek the depths of these virtues.

ਕਰਮਵੰਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ॥

करमवंती सालाहिआ नानक करि गुरु पीरु ॥

Karamavanŧŧee saalaahiâa naanak kari guru peeru ||

Those blessed with the karma of good actions praise the Lord. O Nanak, they make the Guru their spiritual teacher.

ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰਿ ਸਬਾਹ ਕੈ ਸੁਰਤਿਆ ਉਪਜੈ ਚਾਉ ॥

चउथै पहरि सबाह कै सुरतिआ उपजै चाउ ॥

Chaūŧhai pahari sabaah kai suraŧiâa ūpajai chaaū ||

In the fourth watch of the early morning hours, a longing arises in their higher consciousness.

ਤਿਨਾ ਦਰੀਆਵਾ ਸਿਉ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

तिना दरीआवा सिउ दोसती मनि मुखि सचा नाउ ॥

Ŧinaa đareeâavaa siū đosaŧee mani mukhi sachaa naaū ||

They are attuned to the river of life; the True Name is in their minds and on their lips.

ਓਥੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵੰਡੀਐ ਕਰਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਪਸਾਉ ॥

ओथै अम्रितु वंडीऐ करमी होइ पसाउ ॥

Õŧhai âmmmriŧu vanddeeâi karamee hoī pasaaū ||

The Ambrosial Nectar is distributed, and those with good karma receive this gift.

ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਸੀਐ ਵੰਨੀ ਚੜੈ ਚੜਾਉ ॥

कंचन काइआ कसीऐ वंनी चड़ै चड़ाउ ॥

Kancchan kaaīâa kaseeâi vannee chaɍai chaɍaaū ||

Their bodies become golden, and take on the color of spirituality.

ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਰਾਫ ਕੀ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਤਾਉ ॥

जे होवै नदरि सराफ की बहुड़ि न पाई ताउ ॥

Je hovai nađari saraaph kee bahuɍi na paaëe ŧaaū ||

If the Jeweler casts His Glance of Grace, they are not placed in the fire again.

ਸਤੀ ਪਹਰੀ ਸਤੁ ਭਲਾ ਬਹੀਐ ਪੜਿਆ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

सती पहरी सतु भला बहीऐ पड़िआ पासि ॥

Saŧee paharee saŧu bhalaa baheeâi paɍiâa paasi ||

Throughout the other seven watches of the day, it is good to speak the Truth, and sit with the spiritually wise.

ਓਥੈ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਘਟੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

ओथै पापु पुंनु बीचारीऐ कूड़ै घटै रासि ॥

Õŧhai paapu punnu beechaareeâi kooɍai ghatai raasi ||

There, vice and virtue are distinguished, and the capital of falsehood is decreased.

ਓਥੈ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਖਰੇ ਕੀਚਹਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥

ओथै खोटे सटीअहि खरे कीचहि साबासि ॥

Õŧhai khote sateeâhi khare keechahi saabaasi ||

There, the counterfeit are cast aside, and the genuine are cheered.

ਬੋਲਣੁ ਫਾਦਲੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਖਸਮੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

बोलणु फादलु नानका दुखु सुखु खसमै पासि ॥१॥

Bolañu phaađalu naanakaa đukhu sukhu khasamai paasi ||1||

Speech is vain and useless. O Nanak, pain and pleasure are in the power of our Lord and Master. ||1||
