ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੈ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੋ ॥

अम्रित काइआ रहै सुखाली बाजी इहु संसारो ॥

Ammmrit kaaiaa rahai sukhaalee baajee ihu sanssaaro ||

With your nectar-like body, you live in comfort, but this world is just a passing drama.

ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੁਚੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਉਠਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਰੋ ॥

लबु लोभु मुचु कूड़ु कमावहि बहुतु उठावहि भारो ॥

Labu lobhu muchu koo(rr)u kamaavahi bahutu uthaavahi bhaaro ||

You practice greed, avarice and great falsehood, and you carry such a heavy burden.

ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਮੈ ਰੁਲਦੀ ਦੇਖੀ ਜਿਉ ਧਰ ਉਪਰਿ ਛਾਰੋ ॥੧॥

तूं काइआ मै रुलदी देखी जिउ धर उपरि छारो ॥१॥

Toonn kaaiaa mai ruladee dekhee jiu dhar upari chhaaro ||1||

O body, I have seen you blowing away like dust on the earth. ||1||

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥

सुणि सुणि सिख हमारी ॥

Su(nn)i su(nn)i sikh hamaaree ||

Listen - listen to my advice!

ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਰਹਸੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सुक्रितु कीता रहसी मेरे जीअड़े बहुड़ि न आवै वारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sukritu keetaa rahasee mere jeea(rr)e bahu(rr)i na aavai vaaree ||1|| rahaau ||

Only the good deeds which you have done shall remain with you, O my soul. This opportunity shall not come again! ||1|| Pause ||

ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਖਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥

हउ तुधु आखा मेरी काइआ तूं सुणि सिख हमारी ॥

Hau tudhu aakhaa meree kaaiaa toonn su(nn)i sikh hamaaree ||

I say to you, O my body: listen to my advice!

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਚਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਝੂਠੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀ ॥

निंदा चिंदा करहि पराई झूठी लाइतबारी ॥

Ninddaa chinddaa karahi paraaee jhoothee laaitabaaree ||

You slander, and then praise others; you indulge in lies and gossip.

ਵੇਲਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੀ ॥

वेलि पराई जोहहि जीअड़े करहि चोरी बुरिआरी ॥

Veli paraaee johahi jeea(rr)e karahi choree buriaaree ||

You gaze upon the wives of others, O my soul; you steal and commit evil deeds.

ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਪਿਛੈ ਰਹੀਏਹਿ ਛੁਟੜਿ ਹੋਈਅਹਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

हंसु चलिआ तूं पिछै रहीएहि छुटड़ि होईअहि नारी ॥२॥

Hanssu chaliaa toonn pichhai raheeehi chhuta(rr)i hoeeahi naaree ||2||

But when the swan departs, you shall remain behind, like an abandoned woman. ||2||

ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

तूं काइआ रहीअहि सुपनंतरि तुधु किआ करम कमाइआ ॥

Toonn kaaiaa raheeahi supananttari tudhu kiaa karam kamaaiaa ||

O body, you are living in a dream! What good deeds have you done?

ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਮੈ ਜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਆ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਲਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

करि चोरी मै जा किछु लीआ ता मनि भला भाइआ ॥

Kari choree mai jaa kichhu leeaa taa mani bhalaa bhaaiaa ||

When I stole something by deception, then my mind was pleased.

ਹਲਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਲਤਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

हलति न सोभा पलति न ढोई अहिला जनमु गवाइआ ॥३॥

Halati na sobhaa palati na dhoee ahilaa janamu gavaaiaa ||3||

I have no honor in this world, and I shall find no shelter in the world hereafter. My life has been lost, wasted in vain! ||3||

ਹਉ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ खरी दुहेली होई बाबा नानक मेरी बात न पुछै कोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau kharee duhelee hoee baabaa naanak meree baat na puchhai koee ||1|| rahaau ||

I am totally miserable! O Baba Nanak, no one cares for me at all! ||1|| Pause ||

ਤਾਜੀ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਪੜ ਕੇਰੇ ਭਾਰਾ ॥

ताजी तुरकी सुइना रुपा कपड़ केरे भारा ॥

Taajee turakee suinaa rupaa kapa(rr) kere bhaaraa ||

Turkish horses, gold, silver and loads of gorgeous clothes

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਏ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

किस ही नालि न चले नानक झड़ि झड़ि पए गवारा ॥

Kis hee naali na chale naanak jha(rr)i jha(rr)i pae gavaaraa ||

- none of these shall go with you, O Nanak. They are lost and left behind, you fool!

ਕੂਜਾ ਮੇਵਾ ਮੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਇਕੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

कूजा मेवा मै सभ किछु चाखिआ इकु अम्रितु नामु तुमारा ॥४॥

Koojaa mevaa mai sabh kichhu chaakhiaa iku ammmritu naamu tumaaraa ||4||

I have tasted all the sugar candy and sweets, but Your Name alone is Ambrosial Nectar. ||4||

ਦੇ ਦੇ ਨੀਵ ਦਿਵਾਲ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਭਸਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ॥

दे दे नीव दिवाल उसारी भसमंदर की ढेरी ॥

De de neev divaal usaaree bhasamanddar kee dheree ||

Digging deep foundations, the walls are constructed, but in the end, the buildings return to heaps of dust.

ਸੰਚੇ ਸੰਚਿ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਮੇਰੀ ॥

संचे संचि न देई किस ही अंधु जाणै सभ मेरी ॥

Sancche sancchi na deee kis hee anddhu jaa(nn)ai sabh meree ||

People gather and hoard their possessions, and give nothing to anyone else - the poor fools think that everything is theirs.

ਸੋਇਨ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੋਇਨ ਮਾੜੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੫॥

सोइन लंका सोइन माड़ी स्मपै किसै न केरी ॥५॥

Soin lankkaa soin maa(rr)ee samppai kisai na keree ||5||

Riches do not remain with anyone - not even the golden palaces of Sri Lanka. ||5||

ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੰਨ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥

सुणि मूरख मंन अजाणा ॥

Su(nn)i moorakh mann ajaa(nn)aa ||

Listen, you foolish and ignorant mind

ਹੋਗੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

होगु तिसै का भाणा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hogu tisai kaa bhaa(nn)aa ||1|| rahaau ||

- only His Will prevails. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਹਮ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥

साहु हमारा ठाकुरु भारा हम तिस के वणजारे ॥

Saahu hamaaraa thaakuru bhaaraa ham tis ke va(nn)ajaare ||

My Banker is the Great Lord and Master. I am only His petty merchant.

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਸਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ॥੬॥੧॥੧੩॥

जीउ पिंडु सभ रासि तिसै की मारि आपे जीवाले ॥६॥१॥१३॥

Jeeu pinddu sabh raasi tisai kee maari aape jeevaale ||6||1||13||

This soul and body all are His. He Himself kills, and brings back to life. ||6||1||13||

ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

अवरि पंच हम एक जना किउ राखउ घर बारु मना ॥

Avari pancch ham ek janaa kiu raakhau ghar baaru manaa ||

There are five of them, but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?

ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥

मारहि लूटहि नीत नीत किसु आगै करी पुकार जना ॥१॥

Maarahi lootahi neet neet kisu aagai karee pukaar janaa ||1||

They are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1||

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥

स्री राम नामा उचरु मना ॥

Sree raam naamaa ucharu manaa ||

Chant the Name of the Supreme Lord, O my mind.

ਆਗੈ ਜਮ ਦਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

आगै जम दलु बिखमु घना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aagai jam dalu bikhamu ghanaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Otherwise, in the world hereafter, you will have to face the awesome and cruel army of Death. ||1|| Pause ||

ਉਸਾਰਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਸਾ ਧਨਾ ॥

उसारि मड़ोली राखै दुआरा भीतरि बैठी सा धना ॥

Usaari ma(rr)olee raakhai duaaraa bheetari baithee saa dhanaa ||

God has erected the temple of the body; He has placed the nine doors, and the soul-bride sits within.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਲੁਟੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੨॥

अम्रित केल करे नित कामणि अवरि लुटेनि सु पंच जना ॥२॥

Ammmrit kel kare nit kaama(nn)i avari luteni su pancch janaa ||2||

She enjoys the sweet play again and again, while the five demons are plundering her. ||2||

ਢਾਹਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਪਕੜੀ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ॥

ढाहि मड़ोली लूटिआ देहुरा सा धन पकड़ी एक जना ॥

Dhaahi ma(rr)olee lootiaa dehuraa saa dhan paka(rr)ee ek janaa ||

In this way, the temple is being demolished; the body is being plundered, and the soul-bride, left all alone, is captured.

ਜਮ ਡੰਡਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਪੜਿਆ ਭਾਗਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੩॥

जम डंडा गलि संगलु पड़िआ भागि गए से पंच जना ॥३॥

Jam danddaa gali sanggalu pa(rr)iaa bhaagi gae se pancch janaa ||3||

Death strikes her down with his rod, the shackles are placed around her neck, and now the five have left. ||3||

ਕਾਮਣਿ ਲੋੜੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੁੜੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਧਾਤਾ ॥

कामणि लोड़ै सुइना रुपा मित्र लुड़ेनि सु खाधाता ॥

Kaama(nn)i lo(rr)ai suinaa rupaa mitr lu(rr)eni su khaadhaataa ||

The wife yearns for gold and silver, and her friends, the senses, yearn for good food.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥

नानक पाप करे तिन कारणि जासी जमपुरि बाधाता ॥४॥२॥१४॥

Naanak paap kare tin kaara(nn)i jaasee jamapuri baadhaataa ||4||2||14||

O Nanak, she commits sins for their sake; she shall go, bound and gagged, to the City of Death. ||4||2||14||

ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਤੇ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਖਿੰਥਾਤਾ ॥

मुंद्रा ते घट भीतरि मुंद्रा कांइआ कीजै खिंथाता ॥

Munddraa te ghat bheetari munddraa kaaniaa keejai khintthaataa ||

Let your ear-rings be those ear-rings which pierce deep within your heart. Let your body be your patched coat.

ਪੰਚ ਚੇਲੇ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਰਾਵਲ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਡੰਡਾਤਾ ॥੧॥

पंच चेले वसि कीजहि रावल इहु मनु कीजै डंडाता ॥१॥

Pancch chele vasi keejahi raaval ihu manu keejai danddaataa ||1||

Let the five passions be disciples under your control, O begging Yogi, and make this mind your walking stick. ||1||

ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥

जोग जुगति इव पावसिता ॥

Jog jugati iv paavasitaa ||

Thus you shall find the Way of Yoga.

ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एकु सबदु दूजा होरु नासति कंद मूलि मनु लावसिता ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Eku sabadu doojaa horu naasati kandd mooli manu laavasitaa ||1|| rahaau ||

There is only the One Word of the Shabad; everything else shall pass away. Let this be the fruits and roots of your mind's diet. ||1|| Pause ||

ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁੰਡਾਇਐ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਗੰਗਾਤਾ ॥

मूंडि मुंडाइऐ जे गुरु पाईऐ हम गुरु कीनी गंगाता ॥

Moonddi munddaaiai je guru paaeeai ham guru keenee ganggaataa ||

Some try to find the Guru by shaving their heads at the Ganges, but I have made the Guru my Ganges.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਅੰਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥

त्रिभवण तारणहारु सुआमी एकु न चेतसि अंधाता ॥२॥

Tribhava(nn) taara(nn)ahaaru suaamee eku na chetasi anddhaataa ||2||

The Saving Grace of the three worlds is the One Lord and Master, but those in darkness do not remember Him. ||2||

ਕਰਿ ਪਟੰਬੁ ਗਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿ ਸੰਸਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥

करि पट्मबु गली मनु लावसि संसा मूलि न जावसिता ॥

Kari patambbu galee manu laavasi sanssaa mooli na jaavasitaa ||

Practicing hypocrisy and attaching your mind to worldly objects, your doubt shall never depart.

ਏਕਸੁ ਚਰਣੀ ਜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹਿ ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਕੀ ਧਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੩॥

एकसु चरणी जे चितु लावहि लबि लोभि की धावसिता ॥३॥

Ekasu chara(nn)ee je chitu laavahi labi lobhi kee dhaavasitaa ||3||

If you focus your consciousness on the Feet of the One Lord, what reason would you have to chase after greed? ||3||

ਜਪਸਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਚਸਿ ਮਨਾ ॥

जपसि निरंजनु रचसि मना ॥

Japasi niranjjanu rachasi manaa ||

Meditate on the Immaculate Lord, and saturate your mind with Him.

ਕਾਹੇ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

काहे बोलहि जोगी कपटु घना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kaahe bolahi jogee kapatu ghanaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Why, O Yogi, do you make so many false and deceptive claims? ||1|| Pause ||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਮਲੀ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਆਣਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਣੀਤਾ ॥

काइआ कमली हंसु इआणा मेरी मेरी करत बिहाणीता ॥

Kaaiaa kamalee hanssu iaa(nn)aa meree meree karat bihaa(nn)eetaa ||

The body is wild, and the mind is foolish. Practicing egotism, selfishness and conceit, your life is passing away.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਗੀ ਦਾਝੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀਤਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੫॥

प्रणवति नानकु नागी दाझै फिरि पाछै पछुताणीता ॥४॥३॥१५॥

Pr(nn)avati naanaku naagee daajhai phiri paachhai pachhutaa(nn)eetaa ||4||3||15||

Prays Nanak, when the naked body is cremated, then you will come to regret and repent. ||4||3||15||

ਅਉਖਧ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੂਲੁ ਮਨ ਏਕੈ ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥

अउखध मंत्र मूलु मन एकै जे करि द्रिड़ु चितु कीजै रे ॥

Aukhadh manttr moolu man ekai je kari dri(rr)u chitu keejai re ||

O mind, there is only the One medicine, mantra and healing herb - center your consciousness firmly on the One Lord.

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕੇ ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥

जनम जनम के पाप करम के काटनहारा लीजै रे ॥१॥

Janam janam ke paap karam ke kaatanahaaraa leejai re ||1||

Take to the Lord, the Destroyer of the sins and karma of past incarnations. ||1||

ਮਨ ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥

मन एको साहिबु भाई रे ॥

Man eko saahibu bhaaee re ||

The One Lord and Master is pleasing to my mind.

ਤੇਰੇ ਤੀਨਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तेरे तीनि गुणा संसारि समावहि अलखु न लखणा जाई रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tere teeni gu(nn)aa sanssaari samaavahi alakhu na lakha(nn)aa jaaee re ||1|| rahaau ||

In Your three qualities, the world is engrossed; the Unknowable cannot be known. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਹਮ ਤਉ ਪੰਡ ਉਚਾਈ ਰੇ ॥

सकर खंडु माइआ तनि मीठी हम तउ पंड उचाई रे ॥

Sakar khanddu maaiaa tani meethee ham tau pandd uchaaee re ||

Maya is so sweet to the body, like sugar or molasses. We all carry loads of it.

ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਰੀ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲਜੁ ਟੂਕਸਿ ਮੂਸਾ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੨॥

राति अनेरी सूझसि नाही लजु टूकसि मूसा भाई रे ॥२॥

Raati aneree soojhasi naahee laju tookasi moosaa bhaaee re ||2||

In the dark of the night, nothing can be seen. The mouse of death is gnawing away at the rope of life, O Siblings of Destiny! ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਰੇ ॥

मनमुखि करहि तेता दुखु लागै गुरमुखि मिलै वडाई रे ॥

Manamukhi karahi tetaa dukhu laagai guramukhi milai vadaaee re ||

As the self-willed manmukhs act, they suffer in pain. The Gurmukh obtains honor and greatness.

ਜੋ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੋਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੩॥

जो तिनि कीआ सोई होआ किरतु न मेटिआ जाई रे ॥३॥

Jo tini keeaa soee hoaa kiratu na metiaa jaaee re ||3||

Whatever He does, that alone happens; past actions cannot be erased. ||3||

ਸੁਭਰ ਭਰੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਊਣੇ ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਈ ਰੇ ॥

सुभर भरे न होवहि ऊणे जो राते रंगु लाई रे ॥

Subhar bhare na hovahi u(nn)e jo raate ranggu laaee re ||

Those who are imbued with, and committed to the Lord's Love, are filled to overflowing; they never lack anything.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਪੰਕ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਉ ਮੂੜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੬॥

तिन की पंक होवै जे नानकु तउ मूड़ा किछु पाई रे ॥४॥४॥१६॥

Tin kee pankk hovai je naanaku tau moo(rr)aa kichhu paaee re ||4||4||16||

If Nanak could be the dust of their feet, then he, the ignorant one, might also obtain some. ||4||4||16||

ਕਤ ਕੀ ਮਾਈ ਬਾਪੁ ਕਤ ਕੇਰਾ ਕਿਦੂ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਹਮ ਆਏ ॥

कत की माई बापु कत केरा किदू थावहु हम आए ॥

Kat kee maaee baapu kat keraa kidoo thaavahu ham aae ||

Who is our mother, and who is our father? Where did we come from?

ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿੰਬ ਜਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਿਪਜੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

अगनि बि्मब जल भीतरि निपजे काहे कमि उपाए ॥१॥

Agani bimbb jal bheetari nipaje kaahe kammi upaae ||1||

We are formed from the fire of the womb within, and the bubble of water of the sperm. For what purpose are we created? ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ॥

मेरे साहिबा कउणु जाणै गुण तेरे ॥

Mere saahibaa kau(nn)u jaa(nn)ai gu(nn) tere ||

O my Master, who can know Your Glorious Virtues?

ਕਹੇ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ਅਉਗਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कहे न जानी अउगण मेरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kahe na jaanee auga(nn) mere ||1|| rahaau ||

My own demerits cannot be counted. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕੇਤੇ ਰੁਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਹਮ ਚੀਨੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਪਸੂ ਉਪਾਏ ॥

केते रुख बिरख हम चीने केते पसू उपाए ॥

Kete rukh birakh ham cheene kete pasoo upaae ||

I took the form of so many plants and trees, and so many animals.

ਕੇਤੇ ਨਾਗ ਕੁਲੀ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਖ ਉਡਾਏ ॥੨॥

केते नाग कुली महि आए केते पंख उडाए ॥२॥

Kete naag kulee mahi aae kete pankkh udaae ||2||

Many times I entered the families of snakes and flying birds. ||2||

ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਭੰਨੈ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥

हट पटण बिज मंदर भंनै करि चोरी घरि आवै ॥

Hat pata(nn) bij manddar bhannai kari choree ghari aavai ||

I broke into the shops of the city and well-guarded palaces; stealing from them, I come home again.

ਅਗਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇਖੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

अगहु देखै पिछहु देखै तुझ ते कहा छपावै ॥३॥

Agahu dekhai pichhahu dekhai tujh te kahaa chhapaavai ||3||

I looked in front of me, and I looked behind me, but where could I hide from You? ||3||

ਤਟ ਤੀਰਥ ਹਮ ਨਵ ਖੰਡ ਦੇਖੇ ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥

तट तीरथ हम नव खंड देखे हट पटण बाजारा ॥

Tat teerath ham nav khandd dekhe hat pata(nn) baajaaraa ||

I saw the banks of sacred rivers, the nine continents, the shops and bazaars of the cities.

ਲੈ ਕੈ ਤਕੜੀ ਤੋਲਣਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

लै कै तकड़ी तोलणि लागा घट ही महि वणजारा ॥४॥

Lai kai taka(rr)ee tola(nn)i laagaa ghat hee mahi va(nn)ajaaraa ||4||

Taking the scale, the merchant begins to weigh his actions within his own heart. ||4||

ਜੇਤਾ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਤੇਤੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

जेता समुंदु सागरु नीरि भरिआ तेते अउगण हमारे ॥

Jetaa samunddu saagaru neeri bhariaa tete auga(nn) hamaare ||

As the seas and the oceans are overflowing with water, so vast are my own sins.

ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮਿਹਰ ਉਪਾਵਹੁ ਡੁਬਦੇ ਪਥਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੫॥

दइआ करहु किछु मिहर उपावहु डुबदे पथर तारे ॥५॥

Daiaa karahu kichhu mihar upaavahu dubade pathar taare ||5||

Please, shower me with Your Mercy, and take pity upon me. I am a sinking stone - please carry me across! ||5||

ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਰਾਬਰਿ ਤਪੈ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਵਗੈ ਕਾਤੀ ॥

जीअड़ा अगनि बराबरि तपै भीतरि वगै काती ॥

Jeea(rr)aa agani baraabari tapai bheetari vagai kaatee ||

My soul is burning like fire, and the knife is cutting deep.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥੬॥੫॥੧੭॥

प्रणवति नानकु हुकमु पछाणै सुखु होवै दिनु राती ॥६॥५॥१७॥

Pr(nn)avati naanaku hukamu pachhaa(nn)ai sukhu hovai dinu raatee ||6||5||17||

Prays Nanak, recognizing the Lord's Command, I am at peace, day and night. ||6||5||17||

Raam ko balu pooran bhaaee ||

The power of the Lord is universal and perfect, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਕਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ता ते ब्रिथा न बिआपै काई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Taa te brithaa na biaapai kaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

So no pain can ever afflict me. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਦਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਈ ॥

जो जो चितवै दासु हरि माई ॥

Jo jo chitavai daasu hari maaee ||

Whatever the Lord's slave wishes, O mother,

ਸੋ ਸੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥੧॥

सो सो करता आपि कराई ॥१॥

So so karataa aapi karaaee ||1||

The Creator Himself causes that to be done. ||1||

ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

निंदक की प्रभि पति गवाई ॥

Ninddak kee prbhi pati gavaaee ||

God causes the slanderers to lose their honor.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗਾਈ ॥੨॥੧੧੪॥

नानक हरि गुण निरभउ गाई ॥२॥११४॥

Naanak hari gu(nn) nirabhau gaaee ||2||114||

There is no peace without devotional worship of the Lord.

ਜੀਤਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਇਹੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਪਿ ਇਕ ਖਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जीति जनमु इहु रतनु अमोलकु साधसंगति जपि इक खिना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jeeti janamu ihu ratanu amolaku saadhasanggati japi ik khinaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Be victorious, and win the priceless jewel of this human life, by meditating on Him in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, even for an instant. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸੁਤ ਸੰਪਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ॥

सुत स्मपति बनिता बिनोद ॥

Sut samppati banitaa binod ||

Cildren, wealth, spouses, joyful games and pleasures,

ਛੋਡਿ ਗਏ ਬਹੁ ਲੋਗ ਭੋਗ ॥੧॥

छोडि गए बहु लोग भोग ॥१॥

Chhodi gae bahu log bhog ||1||

have been renounced by many. ||1||

ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਰਾਜ ਰੰਗ ॥

हैवर गैवर राज रंग ॥

Haivar gaivar raaj rangg ||

Horses, elephants and the pleasures of power

ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਹੈ ਮੂੜ ਨੰਗ ॥੨॥

तिआगि चलिओ है मूड़ नंग ॥२॥

Tiaagi chalio hai moo(rr) nangg ||2||

- leaving these behind, the fool must depart naked. ||2||

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇਹ ਫੂਲਿਆ ॥

चोआ चंदन देह फूलिआ ॥

Choaa chanddan deh phooliaa ||

The body, scented with musk and sandalwood

ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਧਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲਿਆ ॥੩॥

सो तनु धर संगि रूलिआ ॥३॥

So tanu dhar sanggi rooliaa ||3||

- that body shall come to roll in the dust. ||3||

ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜਾਨੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ॥

मोहि मोहिआ जानै दूरि है ॥

Mohi mohiaa jaanai doori hai ||

Infatuated with emotional attachment, they think that God is far away.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੩੯॥

कहु नानक सदा हदूरि है ॥४॥१॥१३९॥

Kahu naanak sadaa hadoori hai ||4||1||139||

Says Nanak, he is Ever-present! ||4||1||139||

Behold, O Siblings of Destiny, the storm of spiritual wisdom has come.

ਸਭੈ ਉਡਾਨੀ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੀ ਟਾਟੀ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਾਂਧੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सभै उडानी भ्रम की टाटी रहै न माइआ बांधी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sabhai udaanee bhrm kee taatee rahai na maaiaa baandhee ||1|| rahaau ||

It has totally blown away the thatched huts of doubt, and torn apart the bonds of Maya. ||1|| Pause ||

ਦੁਚਿਤੇ ਕੀ ਦੁਇ ਥੂਨਿ ਗਿਰਾਨੀ ਮੋਹ ਬਲੇਡਾ ਟੂਟਾ ॥

दुचिते की दुइ थूनि गिरानी मोह बलेडा टूटा ॥

Duchite kee dui thooni giraanee moh baledaa tootaa ||

The two pillars of double-mindedness have fallen, and the beams of emotional attachment have come crashing down.

ਤਿਸਨਾ ਛਾਨਿ ਪਰੀ ਧਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਫੂਟਾ ॥੧॥

तिसना छानि परी धर ऊपरि दुरमति भांडा फूटा ॥१॥

Tisanaa chhaani paree dhar upari duramati bhaandaa phootaa ||1||

The thatched roof of greed has caved in, and the pitcher of evil-mindedness has been broken. ||1||

ਆਂਧੀ ਪਾਛੇ ਜੋ ਜਲੁ ਬਰਖੈ ਤਿਹਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਨੁ ਭੀਨਾਂ ॥

आंधी पाछे जो जलु बरखै तिहि तेरा जनु भीनां ॥

Aandhee paachhe jo jalu barakhai tihi teraa janu bheenaan ||

Your servant is drenched with the rain that has fallen in this storm.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਾ ਉਦੈ ਭਾਨੁ ਜਬ ਚੀਨਾ ॥੨॥੪੩॥

कहि कबीर मनि भइआ प्रगासा उदै भानु जब चीना ॥२॥४३॥

Kahi kabeer mani bhaiaa prgaasaa udai bhaanu jab cheenaa ||2||43||

Says Kabeer, my mind became enlightened, when I saw the sun rise. ||2||43||

Hari jasu sunahi na hari gun gaavahi ||

They do not listen to the Lord's Praises and they do not sing the Lord's Glories

ਬਾਤਨ ਹੀ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ਗਿਰਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥

बातन ही असमानु गिरावहि ॥१॥

Baatan hee asamaanu giraavahi ||1||

But they try to bring down the sky with their talk. ||1||

ਐਸੇ ਲੋਗਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

ऐसे लोगन सिउ किआ कहीऐ ॥

Aise logan siu kiaa kaheeai ||

What can anyone say to such people?

ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਏ ਭਗਤਿ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਜ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਡਰਾਨੇ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जो प्रभ कीए भगति ते बाहज तिन ते सदा डराने रहीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jo prbh keee bhagati te baahaj tin te sadaa daraane raheeai ||1|| rahaau ||

You should always be careful around those whom God has excluded from His devotional worship. ||1|| Pause ||

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਦੇਹਿ ਚੁਰੂ ਭਰਿ ਪਾਨੀ ॥

आपि न देहि चुरू भरि पानी ॥

Aapi na dehi churoo bhari paanee ||

They do not offer even a handful of water,

ਤਿਹ ਨਿੰਦਹਿ ਜਿਹ ਗੰਗਾ ਆਨੀ ॥੨॥

तिह निंदहि जिह गंगा आनी ॥२॥

Tih ninddahi jih ganggaa aanee ||2||

While they slander the one who brought forth the Ganges. ||2||

ਬੈਠਤ ਉਠਤ ਕੁਟਿਲਤਾ ਚਾਲਹਿ ॥

बैठत उठत कुटिलता चालहि ॥

Baithat uthat kutilataa chaalahi ||

Sitting down or standing up, their ways are crooked and evil.

ਆਪੁ ਗਏ ਅਉਰਨ ਹੂ ਘਾਲਹਿ ॥੩॥

आपु गए अउरन हू घालहि ॥३॥

Aapu gae auran hoo ghaalahi ||3||

They ruin themselves, and then they ruin others. ||3||

ਛਾਡਿ ਕੁਚਰਚਾ ਆਨ ਨ ਜਾਨਹਿ ॥

छाडि कुचरचा आन न जानहि ॥

Chhaadi kucharachaa aan na jaanahi ||

They know nothing except evil talk.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਹੂ ਕੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਮਾਨਹਿ ॥੪॥

ब्रहमा हू को कहिओ न मानहि ॥४॥

Brhamaa hoo ko kahio na maanahi ||4||

They would not even obey Brahma's orders. ||4||

ਆਪੁ ਗਏ ਅਉਰਨ ਹੂ ਖੋਵਹਿ ॥

आपु गए अउरन हू खोवहि ॥

Aapu gae auran hoo khovahi ||

They themselves are lost, and they mislead others as well.

ਆਗਿ ਲਗਾਇ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੈ ਸੋਵਹਿ ॥੫॥

आगि लगाइ मंदर मै सोवहि ॥५॥

Aagi lagaai manddar mai sovahi ||5||

They set their own temple on fire, and then they fall asleep within it. ||5||

ਅਵਰਨ ਹਸਤ ਆਪ ਹਹਿ ਕਾਂਨੇ ॥

अवरन हसत आप हहि कांने ॥

Avaran hasat aap hahi kaanne ||

They laugh at others, while they themselves are one-eyed.

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਲਜਾਨੇ ॥੬॥੧॥੪੪॥

तिन कउ देखि कबीर लजाने ॥६॥१॥४४॥

Tin kau dekhi kabeer lajaane ||6||1||44||

Seeing them, Kabeer is embarrassed. ||6||1||44||

God makes even stones float.

ਰਾਮ ਕਹਤ ਜਨ ਕਸ ਨ ਤਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

राम कहत जन कस न तरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raam kahat jan kas na tare ||1|| rahaau ||

So why shouldn't Your humble slave also float across, chanting Your Name, O Lord? ||1|| Pause ||

ਤਾਰੀਲੇ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਰੂਪ ਕੁਬਿਜਾ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਅਜਾਮਲੁ ਤਾਰੀਅਲੇ ॥

तारीले गनिका बिनु रूप कुबिजा बिआधि अजामलु तारीअले ॥

Taareele ganikaa binu roop kubijaa biaadhi ajaamalu taareeale ||

You saved the prostitute, and the ugly hunch-back; You helped the hunter and Ajaamal swim across as well.

ਚਰਨ ਬਧਿਕ ਜਨ ਤੇਊ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ॥

चरन बधिक जन तेऊ मुकति भए ॥

Charan badhik jan teu mukati bhae ||

The hunter who shot Krishna in the foot - even he was liberated.

ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਿਨ ਰਾਮ ਕਹੇ ॥੧॥

हउ बलि बलि जिन राम कहे ॥१॥

Hau bali bali jin raam kahe ||1||

I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those who chant the Lord's Name. ||1||

ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਤ ਜਨੁ ਬਿਦਰੁ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਉਗ੍ਰਸੈਨ ਕਉ ਰਾਜ ਦੀਏ ॥

दासी सुत जनु बिदरु सुदामा उग्रसैन कउ राज दीए ॥

Daasee sut janu bidaru sudaamaa ugrsain kau raaj deee ||

You saved Bidur, the son of the slave-girl, and Sudama; You restored Ugrasain to his throne.
