सोभावंती नारि है गुरमुखि गुण गाइआ ॥

Sobhaavanttee naari hai guramukhi gu(nn) gaaiaa ||

Glorious is that soul-bride, who as Gurmukh, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਪੇਵਕੜੈ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਮਲੈ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਵਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

Pevaka(rr)ai gu(nn) sammalai saahurai vaasu paaiaa ||

She who cultivates virtue in her parents' home, shall obtain a home at her in-laws.

Guramukhi sahaji samaa(nn)eeaa hari hari mani bhaaiaa ||1||

The Gurmukhs are intuitively absorbed into the Lord. The Lord is pleasing to their minds. ||1||

ससुरै पेईऐ पिरु वसै कहु कितु बिधि पाईऐ ॥

Sasurai peeeai piru vasai kahu kitu bidhi paaeeai ||

Our Husband Lord dwells in this world, and in the world beyond. Tell me, how can He be found?

Vadabhaagee satiguru milai mukhi ammmritu paaeeai ||

By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, who places the Ambrosial Nectar in the mouth.

Haumai dubidhaa binasi jaai sahaje sukhi samaaeeai ||

When egotism and duality are eradicated, one intuitively merges in peace.

Sabhu aape aapi varatadaa aape naai laaeeai ||2||

He Himself is All-pervading; He Himself links us to His Name. ||2||

Manamukhi garabi na paaio agiaan iaa(nn)e ||

The self-willed manmukhs, in their arrogant pride, do not find God; they are so ignorant and foolish!

Satigur sevaa naa karahi phiri phiri pachhutaa(nn)e ||

They do not serve the True Guru, and in the end, they regret and repent, over and over again.

Garabh jonee vaasu paaide garabhe gali jaa(nn)e ||

They are cast into the womb to be reincarnated, and within the womb, they rot.

Mere karate evai bhaavadaa manamukh bharamaa(nn)e ||3||

As it pleases my Creator Lord, the self-willed manmukhs wander around lost. ||3||

My Lord God inscribed the full pre-ordained destiny upon the forehead.

When one meets the Great and Courageous Guru, one meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

Meraa pitaa maataa hari naamu hai hari banddhapu beeraa ||

The Lord's Name is my mother and father; the Lord is my relative and brother.

O Lord, Har, Har, please forgive me and unite me with Yourself. Servant Nanak is a lowly worm. ||4||3||17||37||

My polluted intellect was enlightened by chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

The distinction between Shiva and Shakti - mind and matter - has been destroyed, and the darkness has been dispelled.

Dhuri masataki jin kau likhiaa tin hari naamu piaaraa ||1||

The Lord's Name is loved by those, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny was written. ||1||

How can the Lord be obtained, O Saints? Seeing Him, my life is sustained.

हरि बिनु चसा न जीवती गुर मेलिहु हरि रसु पीवा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Without the Lord, I cannot live, even for an instant. Unite me with the Guru, so that I may drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and I listen to them daily; the Lord, Har, Har, has emancipated me.

Hari rasu gur te paaiaa meraa manu tanu leenee ||

I have obtained the Lord's essence from the Guru; my mind and body are drenched with it.

धनु धनु गुरु सत पुरखु है जिनि भगति हरि दीनी ॥

Dhanu dhanu guru sat purakhu hai jini bhagati hari deenee ||

Blessed, blessed is the Guru, the True Being, who has blessed me with devotional worship of the Lord.

The Sovereign Lord is the Giver of virtue. I am worthless and without virtue.

The sinners sink like stones; through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord carries us across.

Toonn gu(nn)adaataa niramalaa ham avaga(nn)iaare ||

You are the Giver of virtue, O Immaculate Lord; I am worthless and without virtue.

Hari sara(nn)aagati raakhi lehu moo(rr) mugadh nisataare ||3||

I have entered Your Sanctuary, Lord; please save me, as You have saved the idiots and fools. ||3||

Sahaju ananddu sadaa guramatee hari hari mani dhiaaiaa ||

Eternal celestial bliss comes through the Guru's Teachings, by meditating continually on the Lord, Har, Har.

Saja(nn)u hari prbhu paaiaa ghari sohilaa gaaiaa ||

I have obtained the Lord God as my Best Friend, within the home of my own self. I sing the Songs of Joy.

Hari daiaa dhaari prbh benatee hari hari chetaaiaa ||

Please shower me with Your Mercy, O Lord God, that I may meditate on Your Name, Har, Har.

जन नानकु मंगै धूड़ि तिन जिन सतिगुरु पाइआ ॥४॥४॥१८॥३८॥

Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of those who have found the True Guru. ||4||4||18||38||

साहु हमारा तूं धणी जैसी तूं रासि देहि तैसी हम लेहि ॥

Saahu hamaaraa toonn dha(nn)ee jaisee toonn raasi dehi taisee ham lehi ||

O Master, You are my Banker. I receive only that capital which You give me.

हरि नामु वणंजह रंग सिउ जे आपि दइआलु होइ देहि ॥१॥

Hari naamu va(nn)anjjah rangg siu je aapi daiaalu hoi dehi ||1||

I would purchase the Lord's Name with love, if You Yourself, in Your Mercy, would sell it to me. ||1||

Hari va(nn)aju karaavai de raasi re ||1|| rahaau ||

I trade in the merchandise and capital of the Lord's Name. ||1|| Pause ||

लाहा हरि भगति धनु खटिआ हरि सचे साह मनि भाइआ ॥

Laahaa hari bhagati dhanu khatiaa hari sache saah mani bhaaiaa ||

I have earned the profit, the wealth of devotional worship of the Lord. I have become pleasing to the Mind of the Lord, the True Banker.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਖਰੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥

हरि जपि हरि वखरु लदिआ जमु जागाती नेड़ि न आइआ ॥२॥

Hari japi hari vakharu ladiaa jamu jaagaatee ne(rr)i na aaiaa ||2||

I chant and meditate on the Lord, loading the merchandise of the Lord's Name. The Messenger of Death, the tax collector, does not even approach me. ||2||

ਹੋਰੁ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਏ ਅਨੰਤ ਤਰੰਗੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

होरु वणजु करहि वापारीए अनंत तरंगी दुखु माइआ ॥

Horu va(nn)aju karahi vaapaareee anantt taranggee dukhu maaiaa ||

Those traders who trade in other merchandise, are caught up in the endless waves of the pain of Maya.

ਓਇ ਜੇਹੈ ਵਣਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇਆ ਫਲੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

ओइ जेहै वणजि हरि लाइआ फलु तेहा तिन पाइआ ॥३॥

Oi jehai va(nn)aji hari laaiaa phalu tehaa tin paaiaa ||3||

According to the business in which the Lord has placed them, so are the rewards they obtain. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਈ ॥

हरि हरि वणजु सो जनु करे जिसु क्रिपालु होइ प्रभु देई ॥

Hari hari va(nn)aju so janu kare jisu kripaalu hoi prbhu deee ||

People trade in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, when the God shows His Mercy and bestows it.

Servant Nanak serves the Lord, the Banker; he shall never again be called to render his account. ||4||1||7||45||

Vadaa hoi dhanu khaati dei kari bhog bilaasaa ||

Who will grow and earn and give her money to enjoy herself.

Tiu hari jan preeti hari raakhadaa de aapi hathaasaa ||1||

In just the same way, the humble servant of the Lord loves the Lord, who extends His Helping Hand to us. ||1||

O my Lord, I am so foolish; save me, O my Lord God!

Manddari ghari aananddu hari hari jasu mani bhaavai ||

Those whose minds are pleased by the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, are joyful in the palaces of their own homes.

सभ रस मीठे मुखि लगहि जा हरि गुण गावै ॥

Sabh ras meethe mukhi lagahi jaa hari gu(nn) gaavai ||

Their mouths savor all the sweet delicacies when they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ਸਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਇਕੀਹ ਕੁਲੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

हरि जनु परवारु सधारु है इकीह कुली सभु जगतु छडावै ॥२॥

Hari janu paravaaru sadhaaru hai ikeeh kulee sabhu jagatu chhadaavai ||2||

The Lord's humble servants are the saviors of their families; they save their families for twenty-one generations - they save the entire world! ||2||

Jo kichhu keeaa so hari keeaa hari kee vadiaaee ||

Whatever has been done, has been done by the Lord; it is the Glorious Greatness of the Lord.

O Lord, in Your creatures, You are pervading; You inspire them to worship You.

Hari bhagati bhanddaar lahaaidaa aape varataaee ||3||

The Lord leads us to the treasure of devotional worship; He Himself bestows it. ||3||

Laalaa haati vihaajhiaa kiaa tisu chaturaaee ||

I am a slave, purchased in Your market; what clever tricks do I have?

जे राजि बहाले ता हरि गुलामु घासी कउ हरि नामु कढाई ॥

Je raaji bahaale taa hari gulaamu ghaasee kau hari naamu kadhaaee ||

If the Lord were to set me upon a throne, I would still be His slave. If I were a grass-cutter, I would still chant the Lord's Name.

Nit dinasu raati laalachu kare bharamai bharamaaiaa ||

Continuously, day and night, they are gripped by greed and deluded by doubt.

ਵੇਗਾਰਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਵੇਗਾਰੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਇਆ ॥

वेगारि फिरै वेगारीआ सिरि भारु उठाइआ ॥

Vegaari phirai vegaareeaa siri bhaaru uthaaiaa ||

The slaves labor in slavery, carrying the loads upon their heads.

जो गुर की जनु सेवा करे सो घर कै कमि हरि लाइआ ॥१॥

Jo gur kee janu sevaa kare so ghar kai kammi hari laaiaa ||1||

That humble being who serves the Guru is put to work by the Lord in His Home. ||1||

Mere raam to(rr)i banddhan maaiaa ghar kai kammi laai ||

O my Lord, please break these bonds of Maya, and put me to work in Your Home.

नरु प्राणी चाकरी करे नरपति राजे अरथि सभ माइआ ॥

Naru praa(nn)ee chaakaree kare narapati raaje arathi sabh maaiaa ||

Mortal men work for kings, all for the sake of wealth and Maya.

ਕੈ ਬੰਧੈ ਕੈ ਡਾਨਿ ਲੇਇ ਕੈ ਨਰਪਤਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

कै बंधै कै डानि लेइ कै नरपति मरि जाइआ ॥

Kai banddhai kai daani lei kai narapati mari jaaiaa ||

But the king either imprisons them, or fines them, or else dies himself.

ਧੰਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

धंनु धनु सेवा सफल सतिगुरू की जितु हरि हरि नामु जपि हरि सुखु पाइआ ॥२॥

Dhannu dhanu sevaa saphal satiguroo kee jitu hari hari naamu japi hari sukhu paaiaa ||2||

Blessed, rewarding and fruitful is the service of the True Guru; through it, I chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and I have found peace. ||2||

ਨਿਤ ਸਉਦਾ ਸੂਦੁ ਕੀਚੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥

नित सउदा सूदु कीचै बहु भाति करि माइआ कै ताई ॥

Nit saudaa soodu keechai bahu bhaati kari maaiaa kai taaee ||

Everyday, people carry on their business, with all sorts of devices to earn interest, for the sake of Maya.

ਜਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਦੇਇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨੇ ਤੋਟੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

जा लाहा देइ ता सुखु मने तोटै मरि जाई ॥

Jaa laahaa dei taa sukhu mane totai mari jaaee ||

If they earn a profit, they are pleased, but their hearts are broken by losses.

ਜੋ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥

जो गुण साझी गुर सिउ करे नित नित सुखु पाई ॥३॥

Jo gu(nn) saajhee gur siu kare nit nit sukhu paaee ||3||

One who is worthy, becomes a partner with the Guru, and finds a lasting peace forever. ||3||

ਜਿਤਨੀ ਭੂਖ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਹੈ ਤਿਤਨੀ ਭੂਖ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

जितनी भूख अन रस साद है तितनी भूख फिरि लागै ॥

Jitanee bhookh an ras saad hai titanee bhookh phiri laagai ||

The more one feels hunger for other tastes and pleasures, the more this hunger persists.

जिसु हरि आपि क्रिपा करे सो वेचे सिरु गुर आगै ॥

Jisu hari aapi kripaa kare so veche siru gur aagai ||

Those unto whom the Lord Himself shows mercy, sell their head to the Guru.

जन नानक हरि रसि त्रिपतिआ फिरि भूख न लागै ॥४॥४॥१०॥४८॥

Jan naanak hari rasi tripatiaa phiri bhookh na laagai ||4||4||10||48||

Servant Nanak is satisfied by the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. He shall never feel hungry again. ||4||4||10||48||

हमरै मनि चिति हरि आस नित किउ देखा हरि दरसु तुमारा ॥

Hamarai mani chiti hari aas nit kiu dekhaa hari darasu tumaaraa ||

Within my conscious mind is the constant longing for the Lord. How can I behold the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, Lord?

जिनि प्रीति लाई सो जाणता हमरै मनि चिति हरि बहुतु पिआरा ॥

Jini preeti laaee so jaa(nn)ataa hamarai mani chiti hari bahutu piaaraa ||

One who loves the Lord knows this; the Lord is very dear to my conscious mind.

ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

हउ कुरबानी गुर आपणे जिनि विछुड़िआ मेलिआ मेरा सिरजनहारा ॥१॥

Hau kurabaanee gur aapa(nn)e jini vichhu(rr)iaa meliaa meraa sirajanahaaraa ||1||

I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has re-united me with my Creator Lord; I was separated from Him for such a long time! ||1||

Mere raam ham paapee sara(nn)i pare hari duaari ||

O my Lord, I am a sinner; I have come to Your Sanctuary, and fallen at Your Door, Lord.

ਮਤੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਹਮ ਮੇਲੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मतु निरगुण हम मेलै कबहूं अपुनी किरपा धारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Matu niragu(nn) ham melai kabahoonn apunee kirapaa dhaari ||1|| rahaau ||

My intellect is worthless; I am filthy and polluted. Please shower me with Your Mercy sometime. ||1|| Pause ||

ਹਮਰੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

हमरे अवगुण बहुतु बहुतु है बहु बार बार हरि गणत न आवै ॥

Hamare avagu(nn) bahutu bahutu hai bahu baar baar hari ga(nn)at na aavai ||

My demerits are so many and numerous. I have sinned so many times, over and over again. O Lord, they cannot be counted.

ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

तूं गुणवंता हरि हरि दइआलु हरि आपे बखसि लैहि हरि भावै ॥

Toonn gu(nn)avanttaa hari hari daiaalu hari aape bakhasi laihi hari bhaavai ||

You, Lord, are the Merciful Treasure of Virtue. When it pleases You, Lord, You forgive me.

ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

हम अपराधी राखे गुर संगती उपदेसु दीओ हरि नामु छडावै ॥२॥

Ham aparaadhee raakhe gur sanggatee upadesu deeo hari naamu chhadaavai ||2||

I am a sinner, saved only by the Company of the Guru. He has bestowed the Teachings of the Lord's Name, which saves me. ||2||

तुमरे गुण किआ कहा मेरे सतिगुरा जब गुरु बोलह तब बिसमु होइ जाइ ॥

Tumare gu(nn) kiaa kahaa mere satiguraa jab guru bolah tab bisamu hoi jaai ||

What Glorious Virtues of Yours can I describe, O my True Guru? When the Guru speaks, I am transfixed with wonder.

ਹਮ ਜੈਸੇ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਖੈ ਜੈਸੇ ਹਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥

हम जैसे अपराधी अवरु कोई राखै जैसे हम सतिगुरि राखि लीए छडाइ ॥

Ham jaise aparaadhee avaru koee raakhai jaise ham satiguri raakhi leee chhadaai ||

Can anyone else save a sinner like me? The True Guru has protected and saved me.

I was rolling around in the dirt, and no one cared for me at all. In the Company of the Guru, the True Guru, I, the worm, have been raised up and exalted.

The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.

He gave all beings souls, bodies, mouths, noses and water to drink.

Annu khaa(nn)aa kapa(rr)u paina(nn)u deeaa ras ani bhogaa(nn)ee ||

He gave them corn to eat, clothes to wear, and other pleasures to enjoy.

Jini deee su chiti na aavaee pasoo hau kari jaa(nn)ee ||3||

But they do not remember the One who gave them all this. The animals think that they made themselves! ||3||

Servant Nanak was purchased in the slave-market. He is the slave of the Lord's slaves. ||4||6||12||50||

Anttari baahari mukhi de giraasu khinu khinu pochaari ||

- indoors and outdoors, she puts food in his mouth; each and every moment, she caresses him.

The white flamingo circles through the sky,

ओह राखै चीतु पीछै बिचि बचरे नित हिरदै सारि समाली ॥

Oh raakhai cheetu peechhai bichi bachare nit hiradai saari samaalee ||

But she keeps her young ones in her mind; she has left them behind, but she constantly remembers them in her heart.

तिउ सतिगुर सिख प्रीति हरि हरि की गुरु सिख रखै जीअ नाली ॥२॥

Tiu satigur sikh preeti hari hari kee guru sikh rakhai jeea naalee ||2||

In just the same way, the True Guru loves His Sikhs. The Lord cherishes His GurSikhs, and keeps them clasped to His Heart. ||2||

जैसे काती तीस बतीस है विचि राखै रसना मास रतु केरी ॥

Jaise kaatee tees batees hai vichi raakhai rasanaa maas ratu keree ||

Just as the tongue, made of flesh and blood, is protected within the scissors of the thirty-two teeth

कोई जाणहु मास काती कै किछु हाथि है सभ वसगति है हरि केरी ॥

Koee jaa(nn)ahu maas kaatee kai kichhu haathi hai sabh vasagati hai hari keree ||

Who thinks that the power lies in the flesh or the scissors? Everything is in the Power of the Lord.

तिउ संत जना की नर निंदा करहि हरि राखै पैज जन केरी ॥३॥

Tiu santt janaa kee nar ninddaa karahi hari raakhai paij jan keree ||3||

In just the same way, when someone slanders the Saint, the Lord preserves the honor of His servant. ||3||

भाई मत कोई जाणहु किसी कै किछु हाथि है सभ करे कराइआ ॥

Bhaaee mat koee jaa(nn)ahu kisee kai kichhu haathi hai sabh kare karaaiaa ||

O Siblings of Destiny, let none think that they have any power. All act as the Lord causes them to act.

जरा मरा तापु सिरति सापु सभु हरि कै वसि है कोई लागि न सकै बिनु हरि का लाइआ ॥

Jaraa maraa taapu sirati saapu sabhu hari kai vasi hai koee laagi na sakai binu hari kaa laaiaa ||

Old age, death, fever, poisons and snakes - everything is in the Hands of the Lord. Nothing can touch anyone without the Lord's Order.

ऐसा हरि नामु मनि चिति निति धिआवहु जन नानक जो अंती अउसरि लए छडाइआ ॥४॥७॥१३॥५१॥

Aisaa hari naamu mani chiti niti dhiaavahu jan naanak jo anttee ausari lae chhadaaiaa ||4||7||13||51||

Within your conscious mind, O servant Nanak, meditate forever on the Name of the Lord, who shall deliver you in the end. ||4||7||13||51||

All wealth, and the eight miraculous spiritual powers are in the supremely sublime essence of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

Ahinisi paalahi raakhi lehi aatam sukhu dhaaraa ||1||

Kiratu paiaa adh uradhee binu giaan beechaaraa ||

According to the karma of past actions, people descend to the depths or rise to the heights, unless they contemplate spiritual wisdom.

Binu upamaa jagadees kee binasai na anddhiaaraa ||3||

I have seen the world being destroyed by greed and egotism.

The Mansion of the Infinite Lord's Presence is within the home of one's own being. He is beyond any boundaries.

डोलु बधा कसि जेवरी आकासि पताला ॥६॥

Dolu badhaa kasi jevaree aakaasi pataalaa ||6||

Like the bucket tied to the rope in the well, you are pulled up to the Akaashic Ethers, and then lowered down to the nether regions of the underworld. ||6||

Naami miliai pati paaeeai naami manniai sukhu hoi ||

Receiving the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one obtains honor; believing in the Naam, one is at peace.

Dharati asamaanu na jhalaee vichi visataa pae pachanni ||5||

They are not accepted by the earth or the sky; they fall into manure, and rot. ||5||

Those who serve the True Guru are very beautiful; they cast off the filth of selfishness and conceit.

Sarajeeu kaatahi nirajeeu poojahi antt kaal kau bhaaree ||

You murder living beings and worship lifeless things; at your very last moment, you shall suffer in terrible pain.

Devee devaa poojahi dolahi paarabrhamu nahee jaanaa ||

You worship gods and goddesses, but you do not know the Supreme Lord God.

Says Kabeer, you have not remembered the Lord who has no ancestors; you are clinging to your corrupt ways. ||4||1||45||

I turned my breath inwards, and pierced through the six chakras of the body, and my awareness was centered on the Primal Void of the Absolute Lord.

निवरै दूरि दूरि फुनि निवरै जिनि जैसा करि मानिआ ॥

Nivarai doori doori phuni nivarai jini jaisaa kari maaniaa ||

That which was near has become distant, and again, that which was distant is near, for those who realize the Lord as He is.

It is like the sugar water made from the candy; only one who drinks it knows its taste. ||2||

तेरी निरगुन कथा काइ सिउ कहीऐ ऐसा कोइ बिबेकी ॥

Teree niragun kathaa kaai siu kaheeai aisaa koi bibekee ||

Unto whom should I speak Your speech, O Lord; it is beyond the three qualities. Is there anyone with such discerning wisdom?

Uravaar paar ke daaneeaa likhi lehu aal pataalu ||

O you who know this world and the world beyond: write whatever nonsense you please about me.

Mohi jam danddu na laagaee tajeele sarab janjjaal ||3||

The club of the Messenger of Death shall not strike me, since I have cast off all entanglements. ||3||

Love of this world is like the pale, temporary color of the safflower.

Satajugi satu tetaa jagee duaapari poojaachaar ||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, was Truth; in the Silver Age of Trayta Yuga, charitable feasts; in the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, there was worship.

Teenau jug teenau di(rr)e kali keval naam adhaar ||1||

In those three ages, people held to these three ways. But in the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is your only Support. ||1||

Bahu bidhi dharam niroopeeai karataa deesai sabh loi ||

So many forms of religion have been described; the whole world is practicing them.

Kavan karam te chhooteeai jih saadhe sabh sidhi hoi ||2||

What actions will bring emancipation, and total perfection? ||2||

Karam akaram beechaareeai sankkaa suni bed puraan ||

One may distinguish between good and evil actions, and listen to the Vedas and the Puraanas,

संसा सद हिरदै बसै कउनु हिरै अभिमानु ॥३॥

Sanssaa sad hiradai basai kaunu hirai abhimaanu ||3||

But doubt still persists. Skepticism continually dwells in the heart, so who can eradicate egotistical pride? ||3||

ਬਾਹਰੁ ਉਦਕਿ ਪਖਾਰੀਐ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਿਬਿਧਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

बाहरु उदकि पखारीऐ घट भीतरि बिबिधि बिकार ॥

Baaharu udaki pakhaareeai ghat bheetari bibidhi bikaar ||

Outwardly, he washes with water, but deep within, his heart is tarnished by all sorts of vices.

ਸੁਧ ਕਵਨ ਪਰ ਹੋਇਬੋ ਸੁਚ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥੪॥

सुध कवन पर होइबो सुच कुंचर बिधि बिउहार ॥४॥

Sudh kavan par hoibo such kuncchar bidhi biuhaar ||4||

So how can he become pure? His method of purification is like that of an elephant, covering himself with dust right after his bath! ||4||

Ravi prgaas rajanee jathaa gati jaanat sabh sanssaar ||

With the rising of the sun, the night is brought to its end; the whole world knows this.

Paaras maano taabo chhue kanak hot nahee baar ||5||

It is believed that with the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, copper is immediately transformed into gold. ||5||

Unaman man man hee mile chhutakat bajar kapaat ||6||

Then the soul blends with the Supreme Soul, and the stubborn doors are opened wide. ||6||

भगति जुगति मति सति करी भ्रम बंधन काटि बिकार ॥

Bhagati jugati mati sati karee bhrm banddhan kaati bikaar ||

Through the way of devotion, the intellect is imbued with Truth; doubts, entanglements and vices are cut away.

Soee basi rasi man mile gun niragun ek bichaar ||7||

The mind is restrained, and one attains joy, contemplating the One Lord, who is both with and without qualities. ||7||

Anik jatan nigrh keee taaree na tarai bhrm phaas ||

I have tried many methods, but by turning it away, the noose of doubt is not turned away.

Prem bhagati nahee upajai taa te ravidaas udaas ||8||1||
