Gauree Bairaagan, First Mehl:

ਰੈਣਿ ਗਵਾਈ ਸੋਇ ਕੈ ਦਿਵਸੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਖਾਇ ॥

रैणि गवाई सोइ कै दिवसु गवाइआ खाइ ॥

Rai(nn)i gavaaee soi kai divasu gavaaiaa khaai ||

The nights are wasted sleeping, and the days are wasted eating.

ਹੀਰੇ ਜੈਸਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

हीरे जैसा जनमु है कउडी बदले जाइ ॥१॥

Heere jaisaa janamu hai kaudee badale jaai ||1||

Human life is such a precious jewel, but it is being lost in exchange for a mere shell. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ॥

नामु न जानिआ राम का ॥

Naamu na jaaniaa raam kaa ||

You do not know the Name of the Lord.

ਮੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मूड़े फिरि पाछै पछुताहि रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Moo(rr)e phiri paachhai pachhutaahi re ||1|| rahaau ||

You fool - you shall regret and repent in the end! ||1|| Pause ||

ਅਨਤਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਰਣੀ ਧਰੇ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਚਾਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

अनता धनु धरणी धरे अनत न चाहिआ जाइ ॥

Anataa dhanu dhara(nn)ee dhare anat na chaahiaa jaai ||

You bury your temporary wealth in the ground, but how can you love that which is temporary?

ਅਨਤ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਨ ਜੋ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਆਏ ਅਨਤ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥

अनत कउ चाहन जो गए से आए अनत गवाइ ॥२॥

Anat kau chaahan jo gae se aae anat gavaai ||2||

Those who have departed, after craving for temporary wealth, have returned home without this temporary wealth. ||2||

ਆਪਣ ਲੀਆ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਭਾਗਠੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

आपण लीआ जे मिलै ता सभु को भागठु होइ ॥

Aapa(nn) leeaa je milai taa sabhu ko bhaagathu hoi ||

If people could gather it in by their own efforts, then everyone would be so lucky.

ਕਰਮਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥

करमा उपरि निबड़ै जे लोचै सभु कोइ ॥३॥

Karamaa upari niba(rr)ai je lochai sabhu koi ||3||

According to the karma of past actions, one's destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky. ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

नानक करणा जिनि कीआ सोई सार करेइ ॥

Naanak kara(nn)aa jini keeaa soee saar karei ||

O Nanak, the One who created the creation - He alone takes care of it.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੀ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੮॥

हुकमु न जापी खसम का किसै वडाई देइ ॥४॥१॥१८॥

Hukamu na jaapee khasam kaa kisai vadaaee dei ||4||1||18||

The Hukam of our Lord and Master's Command cannot be known; He Himself blesses us with greatness. ||4||1||18||

ਹਰਣੀ ਹੋਵਾ ਬਨਿ ਬਸਾ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਉ ॥

हरणी होवा बनि बसा कंद मूल चुणि खाउ ॥

Hara(nn)ee hovaa bani basaa kandd mool chu(nn)i khaau ||

What if I were to become a deer, and live in the forest, picking and eating fruits and roots

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਾਰਿ ਵਾਰਿ ਹਉ ਜਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

गुर परसादी मेरा सहु मिलै वारि वारि हउ जाउ जीउ ॥१॥

Gur parasaadee meraa sahu milai vaari vaari hau jaau jeeu ||1||

- by Guru's Grace, I am a sacrifice to my Master. Again and again, I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice. ||1||

ਮੈ ਬਨਜਾਰਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ॥

मै बनजारनि राम की ॥

Mai banajaarani raam kee ||

I am the shop-keeper of the Lord.

ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਜੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तेरा नामु वखरु वापारु जी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Teraa naamu vakharu vaapaaru jee ||1|| rahaau ||

Your Name is my merchandise and trade. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕੋਕਿਲ ਹੋਵਾ ਅੰਬਿ ਬਸਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कोकिल होवा अंबि बसा सहजि सबद बीचारु ॥

Kokil hovaa ambbi basaa sahaji sabad beechaaru ||

If I were to become a cuckoo, living in a mango tree, I would still contemplate the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

सहजि सुभाइ मेरा सहु मिलै दरसनि रूपि अपारु ॥२॥

Sahaji subhaai meraa sahu milai darasani roopi apaaru ||2||

I would still meet my Lord and Master, with intuitive ease; the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of His Form, is incomparably beautiful. ||2||

ਮਛੁਲੀ ਹੋਵਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਸਾ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਸਾਰਿ ॥

मछुली होवा जलि बसा जीअ जंत सभि सारि ॥

Machhulee hovaa jali basaa jeea jantt sabhi saari ||

If I were to become a fish, living in the water, I would still remember the Lord, who watches over all beings and creatures.

ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਹੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਉ ਮਿਲਉਗੀ ਬਾਹ ਪਸਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

उरवारि पारि मेरा सहु वसै हउ मिलउगी बाह पसारि ॥३॥

Uravaari paari meraa sahu vasai hau milaugee baah pasaari ||3||

My Husband Lord dwells on this shore, and on the shore beyond; I would still meet Him, and hug Him close in my embrace. ||3||

ਨਾਗਨਿ ਹੋਵਾ ਧਰ ਵਸਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥

नागनि होवा धर वसा सबदु वसै भउ जाइ ॥

Naagani hovaa dhar vasaa sabadu vasai bhau jaai ||

If I were to become a snake, living in the ground, the Shabad would still dwell in my mind, and my fears would be dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੯॥

नानक सदा सोहागणी जिन जोती जोति समाइ ॥४॥२॥१९॥

Naanak sadaa sohaaga(nn)ee jin jotee joti samaai ||4||2||19||

O Nanak, they are forever the happy soul-brides, whose light merges into His Light. ||4||2||19||

ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ॥

Third Mehl, Gauree Bairaagan:

ਜੈਸੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਊਪਰਿ ਮੇਘੁਲਾ ਬਰਸਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਿਆ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਧੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

जैसी धरती ऊपरि मेघुला बरसतु है किआ धरती मधे पाणी नाही ॥

Jaisee dharatee upari meghulaa barasatu hai kiaa dharatee madhe paa(nn)ee naahee ||

The clouds pour their rain down upon the earth, but isn't there water within the earth as well?

ਜੈਸੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਧੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਗਾ ਵਰਸਤ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

जैसे धरती मधे पाणी परगासिआ बिनु पगा वरसत फिराही ॥१॥

Jaise dharatee madhe paa(nn)ee paragaasiaa binu pagaa varasat phiraahee ||1||

Water is contained within the earth; without feet, the clouds run around and let down their rain. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਤੂੰ ਐਸੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਹੀ ॥

बाबा तूं ऐसे भरमु चुकाही ॥

Baabaa toonn aise bharamu chukaahee ||

O Baba, get rid of your doubts like this.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਤੈਸੇ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जो किछु करतु है सोई कोई है रे तैसे जाइ समाही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jo kichhu karatu hai soee koee hai re taise jaai samaahee ||1|| rahaau ||

As you act, so shall you become, and so you shall go and mingle. ||1|| Pause ||

ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਕਿਆ ਓਇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥

इसतरी पुरख होइ कै किआ ओइ करम कमाही ॥

Isataree purakh hoi kai kiaa oi karam kamaahee ||

As woman or man, what can anyone do?

ਨਾਨਾ ਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਹਹਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥

नाना रूप सदा हहि तेरे तुझ ही माहि समाही ॥२॥

Naanaa roop sadaa hahi tere tujh hee maahi samaahee ||2||

The many and various forms are always Yours, O Lord; they shall merge again into You. ||2||

ਇਤਨੇ ਜਨਮ ਭੂਲਿ ਪਰੇ ਸੇ ਜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਭੂਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

इतने जनम भूलि परे से जा पाइआ ता भूले नाही ॥

Itane janam bhooli pare se jaa paaiaa taa bhoole naahee ||

In countless incarnations, I went astray. Now that I have found You, I shall no longer wander.

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਹੀ ॥੩॥

जा का कारजु सोई परु जाणै जे गुर कै सबदि समाही ॥३॥

Jaa kaa kaaraju soee paru jaa(nn)ai je gur kai sabadi samaahee ||3||

It is His work; those who are absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad come to know it well. ||3||

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਹਹਿ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਕਹਾ ਹੀ ॥

तेरा सबदु तूंहै हहि आपे भरमु कहा ही ॥

Teraa sabadu toonhhai hahi aape bharamu kahaa hee ||

The Shabad is Yours; You are Yourself. Where is there any doubt?

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਤਤ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਹੀ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੫॥੩੫॥

नानक ततु तत सिउ मिलिआ पुनरपि जनमि न आही ॥४॥१॥१५॥३५॥

Naanak tatu tat siu miliaa punarapi janami na aahee ||4||1||15||35||

O Nanak, one whose essence is merged with the Lord's essence does not have to enter the cycle of reincarnation again. ||4||1||15||35||

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਬਾਧਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

सभु जगु कालै वसि है बाधा दूजै भाइ ॥

Sabhu jagu kaalai vasi hai baadhaa doojai bhaai ||

The whole world is under the power of Death, bound by the love of duality.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

हउमै करम कमावदे मनमुखि मिलै सजाइ ॥१॥

Haumai karam kamaavade manamukhi milai sajaai ||1||

The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in ego; they receive their just rewards. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

मेरे मन गुर चरणी चितु लाइ ॥

Mere man gur chara(nn)ee chitu laai ||

O my mind, focus your consciousness on the Guru's Feet.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਲੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि नामु निधानु लै दरगह लए छडाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi naamu nidhaanu lai daragah lae chhadaai ||1|| rahaau ||

As Gurmukh, you shall be awarded the treasure of the Naam. In the Court of the Lord, you shall be saved. ||1|| Pause ||

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

लख चउरासीह भरमदे मनहठि आवै जाइ ॥

Lakh chauraaseeh bharamade manahathi aavai jaai ||

Through 8.4 million incarnations, people wander lost; in stubborn-mindedness, they come and go.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਿਓ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

गुर का सबदु न चीनिओ फिरि फिरि जोनी पाइ ॥२॥

Gur kaa sabadu na cheenio phiri phiri jonee paai ||2||

They do not realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad; they are reincarnated over and over again. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

गुरमुखि आपु पछाणिआ हरि नामु वसिआ मनि आइ ॥

Guramukhi aapu pachhaa(nn)iaa hari naamu vasiaa mani aai ||

The Gurmukh understands his own self. The Lord's Name comes to dwell within the mind.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥

अनदिनु भगती रतिआ हरि नामे सुखि समाइ ॥३॥

Anadinu bhagatee ratiaa hari naame sukhi samaai ||3||

Imbued with devotion to the Lord's Name, night and day, he merges in peace. ||3||

ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੇ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

मनु सबदि मरै परतीति होइ हउमै तजे विकार ॥

Manu sabadi marai parateeti hoi haumai taje vikaar ||

When one's mind dies in the Shabad, one radiates faith and confidence, shedding egotism and corruption.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮੀ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੬॥੩੬॥

जन नानक करमी पाईअनि हरि नामा भगति भंडार ॥४॥२॥१६॥३६॥

Jan naanak karamee paaeeani hari naamaa bhagati bhanddaar ||4||2||16||36||

O servant Nanak, through the karma of good actions, the treasure of devotional worship and the Name of the Lord are attained. ||4||2||16||36||

ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

पेईअड़ै दिन चारि है हरि हरि लिखि पाइआ ॥

Peeea(rr)ai din chaari hai hari hari likhi paaiaa ||

The Lord, Har, Har, has ordained that the soul is to stay in her parents' home for only a few short days.

ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

सोभावंती नारि है गुरमुखि गुण गाइआ ॥

Sobhaavanttee naari hai guramukhi gu(nn) gaaiaa ||

Glorious is that soul-bride, who as Gurmukh, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਪੇਵਕੜੈ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਮਲੈ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਵਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

पेवकड़ै गुण समलै साहुरै वासु पाइआ ॥

Pevaka(rr)ai gu(nn) sammalai saahurai vaasu paaiaa ||

She who cultivates virtue in her parents' home, shall obtain a home at her in-laws.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਣੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि सहजि समाणीआ हरि हरि मनि भाइआ ॥१॥

Guramukhi sahaji samaa(nn)eeaa hari hari mani bhaaiaa ||1||

The Gurmukhs are intuitively absorbed into the Lord. The Lord is pleasing to their minds. ||1||

ਸਸੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਪਿਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

ससुरै पेईऐ पिरु वसै कहु कितु बिधि पाईऐ ॥

Sasurai peeeai piru vasai kahu kitu bidhi paaeeai ||

Our Husband Lord dwells in this world, and in the world beyond. Tell me, how can He be found?

ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

आपि निरंजनु अलखु है आपे मेलाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aapi niranjjanu alakhu hai aape melaaeeai ||1|| rahaau ||

The Immaculate Lord Himself is unseen. He unites us with Himself. ||1|| Pause ||

ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

आपे ही प्रभु देहि मति हरि नामु धिआईऐ ॥

Aape hee prbhu dehi mati hari naamu dhiaaeeai ||

God Himself bestows wisdom; meditate on the Name of the Lord.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

वडभागी सतिगुरु मिलै मुखि अम्रितु पाईऐ ॥

Vadabhaagee satiguru milai mukhi ammmritu paaeeai ||

By great good fortune, one meets the True Guru, who places the Ambrosial Nectar in the mouth.

ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥

हउमै दुबिधा बिनसि जाइ सहजे सुखि समाईऐ ॥

Haumai dubidhaa binasi jaai sahaje sukhi samaaeeai ||

When egotism and duality are eradicated, one intuitively merges in peace.

ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

सभु आपे आपि वरतदा आपे नाइ लाईऐ ॥२॥

Sabhu aape aapi varatadaa aape naai laaeeai ||2||

He Himself is All-pervading; He Himself links us to His Name. ||2||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਇਆਣੇ ॥

मनमुखि गरबि न पाइओ अगिआन इआणे ॥

Manamukhi garabi na paaio agiaan iaa(nn)e ||

The self-willed manmukhs, in their arrogant pride, do not find God; they are so ignorant and foolish!

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੇ ॥

सतिगुर सेवा ना करहि फिरि फिरि पछुताणे ॥

Satigur sevaa naa karahi phiri phiri pachhutaa(nn)e ||

They do not serve the True Guru, and in the end, they regret and repent, over and over again.

ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਵਾਸੁ ਪਾਇਦੇ ਗਰਭੇ ਗਲਿ ਜਾਣੇ ॥

गरभ जोनी वासु पाइदे गरभे गलि जाणे ॥

Garabh jonee vaasu paaide garabhe gali jaa(nn)e ||

They are cast into the womb to be reincarnated, and within the womb, they rot.

ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤੇ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵਦਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਾਣੇ ॥੩॥

मेरे करते एवै भावदा मनमुख भरमाणे ॥३॥

Mere karate evai bhaavadaa manamukh bharamaa(nn)e ||3||

As it pleases my Creator Lord, the self-willed manmukhs wander around lost. ||3||

ਮੇਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

मेरै हरि प्रभि लेखु लिखाइआ धुरि मसतकि पूरा ॥

Merai hari prbhi lekhu likhaaiaa dhuri masataki pooraa ||

My Lord God inscribed the full pre-ordained destiny upon the forehead.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

हरि हरि नामु धिआइआ भेटिआ गुरु सूरा ॥

Hari hari naamu dhiaaiaa bhetiaa guru sooraa ||

When one meets the Great and Courageous Guru, one meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੰਧਪੁ ਬੀਰਾ ॥

मेरा पिता माता हरि नामु है हरि बंधपु बीरा ॥

Meraa pitaa maataa hari naamu hai hari banddhapu beeraa ||

The Lord's Name is my mother and father; the Lord is my relative and brother.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕੀਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੭॥੩੭॥

हरि हरि बखसि मिलाइ प्रभ जनु नानकु कीरा ॥४॥३॥१७॥३७॥

Hari hari bakhasi milaai prbh janu naanaku keeraa ||4||3||17||37||

O Lord, Har, Har, please forgive me and unite me with Yourself. Servant Nanak is a lowly worm. ||4||3||17||37||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

सतिगुर ते गिआनु पाइआ हरि ततु बीचारा ॥

Satigur te giaanu paaiaa hari tatu beechaaraa ||

From the True Guru, I obtained spiritual wisdom; I contemplate the Lord's essence.

ਮਤਿ ਮਲੀਣ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਭਈ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਾ ॥

मति मलीण परगटु भई जपि नामु मुरारा ॥

Mati malee(nn) paragatu bhaee japi naamu muraaraa ||

My polluted intellect was enlightened by chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸਿਵਿ ਸਕਤਿ ਮਿਟਾਈਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥

सिवि सकति मिटाईआ चूका अंधिआरा ॥

Sivi sakati mitaaeeaa chookaa anddhiaaraa ||

The distinction between Shiva and Shakti - mind and matter - has been destroyed, and the darkness has been dispelled.

ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥

धुरि मसतकि जिन कउ लिखिआ तिन हरि नामु पिआरा ॥१॥

Dhuri masataki jin kau likhiaa tin hari naamu piaaraa ||1||

The Lord's Name is loved by those, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny was written. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਹੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ॥

हरि कितु बिधि पाईऐ संत जनहु जिसु देखि हउ जीवा ॥

Hari kitu bidhi paaeeai santt janahu jisu dekhi hau jeevaa ||

How can the Lord be obtained, O Saints? Seeing Him, my life is sustained.

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਚਸਾ ਨ ਜੀਵਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि बिनु चसा न जीवती गुर मेलिहु हरि रसु पीवा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari binu chasaa na jeevatee gur melihu hari rasu peevaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Lord, I cannot live, even for an instant. Unite me with the Guru, so that I may drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥

हउ हरि गुण गावा नित हरि सुणी हरि हरि गति कीनी ॥

Hau hari gu(nn) gaavaa nit hari su(nn)ee hari hari gati keenee ||

I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and I listen to them daily; the Lord, Har, Har, has emancipated me.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਲੀਨੀ ॥

हरि रसु गुर ते पाइआ मेरा मनु तनु लीनी ॥

Hari rasu gur te paaiaa meraa manu tanu leenee ||

I have obtained the Lord's essence from the Guru; my mind and body are drenched with it.

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ॥

धनु धनु गुरु सत पुरखु है जिनि भगति हरि दीनी ॥

Dhanu dhanu guru sat purakhu hai jini bhagati hari deenee ||

Blessed, blessed is the Guru, the True Being, who has blessed me with devotional worship of the Lord.

ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਮ ਕੀਨੀ ॥੨॥

जिसु गुर ते हरि पाइआ सो गुरु हम कीनी ॥२॥

Jisu gur te hari paaiaa so guru ham keenee ||2||

From the Guru, I have obtained the Lord; I have made Him my Guru. ||2||

ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ਹੈ ਹਮ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰੇ ॥

गुणदाता हरि राइ है हम अवगणिआरे ॥

Gu(nn)adaataa hari raai hai ham avaga(nn)iaare ||

The Sovereign Lord is the Giver of virtue. I am worthless and without virtue.

ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਥਰ ਡੂਬਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

पापी पाथर डूबदे गुरमति हरि तारे ॥

Paapee paathar doobade guramati hari taare ||

The sinners sink like stones; through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord carries us across.

ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਹਮ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰੇ ॥

तूं गुणदाता निरमला हम अवगणिआरे ॥

Toonn gu(nn)adaataa niramalaa ham avaga(nn)iaare ||

You are the Giver of virtue, O Immaculate Lord; I am worthless and without virtue.

ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਗਧ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

हरि सरणागति राखि लेहु मूड़ मुगध निसतारे ॥३॥

Hari sara(nn)aagati raakhi lehu moo(rr) mugadh nisataare ||3||

I have entered Your Sanctuary, Lord; please save me, as You have saved the idiots and fools. ||3||

ਸਹਜੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

सहजु अनंदु सदा गुरमती हरि हरि मनि धिआइआ ॥

Sahaju ananddu sadaa guramatee hari hari mani dhiaaiaa ||

Eternal celestial bliss comes through the Guru's Teachings, by meditating continually on the Lord, Har, Har.

ਸਜਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

सजणु हरि प्रभु पाइआ घरि सोहिला गाइआ ॥

Saja(nn)u hari prbhu paaiaa ghari sohilaa gaaiaa ||

I have obtained the Lord God as my Best Friend, within the home of my own self. I sing the Songs of Joy.

ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਾਇਆ ॥

हरि दइआ धारि प्रभ बेनती हरि हरि चेताइआ ॥

Hari daiaa dhaari prbh benatee hari hari chetaaiaa ||

Please shower me with Your Mercy, O Lord God, that I may meditate on Your Name, Har, Har.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਧੂੜਿ ਤਿਨ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੮॥੩੮॥

जन नानकु मंगै धूड़ि तिन जिन सतिगुरु पाइआ ॥४॥४॥१८॥३८॥

Jan naanaku manggai dhoo(rr)i tin jin satiguru paaiaa ||4||4||18||38||

Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of those who have found the True Guru. ||4||4||18||38||

ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਧਣੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਸਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਹਮ ਲੇਹਿ ॥

साहु हमारा तूं धणी जैसी तूं रासि देहि तैसी हम लेहि ॥

Saahu hamaaraa toonn dha(nn)ee jaisee toonn raasi dehi taisee ham lehi ||

O Master, You are my Banker. I receive only that capital which You give me.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਣੰਜਹ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਜੇ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਦੇਹਿ ॥੧॥

हरि नामु वणंजह रंग सिउ जे आपि दइआलु होइ देहि ॥१॥

Hari naamu va(nn)anjjah rangg siu je aapi daiaalu hoi dehi ||1||

I would purchase the Lord's Name with love, if You Yourself, in Your Mercy, would sell it to me. ||1||

ਹਮ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਕੇ ॥

हम वणजारे राम के ॥

Ham va(nn)ajaare raam ke ||

I am the merchant, the peddler of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਦੇ ਰਾਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि वणजु करावै दे रासि रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari va(nn)aju karaavai de raasi re ||1|| rahaau ||

I trade in the merchandise and capital of the Lord's Name. ||1|| Pause ||

ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

लाहा हरि भगति धनु खटिआ हरि सचे साह मनि भाइआ ॥

Laahaa hari bhagati dhanu khatiaa hari sache saah mani bhaaiaa ||

I have earned the profit, the wealth of devotional worship of the Lord. I have become pleasing to the Mind of the Lord, the True Banker.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਖਰੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤੀ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥

हरि जपि हरि वखरु लदिआ जमु जागाती नेड़ि न आइआ ॥२॥

Hari japi hari vakharu ladiaa jamu jaagaatee ne(rr)i na aaiaa ||2||

I chant and meditate on the Lord, loading the merchandise of the Lord's Name. The Messenger of Death, the tax collector, does not even approach me. ||2||

ਹੋਰੁ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਏ ਅਨੰਤ ਤਰੰਗੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

होरु वणजु करहि वापारीए अनंत तरंगी दुखु माइआ ॥

Horu va(nn)aju karahi vaapaareee anantt taranggee dukhu maaiaa ||

Those traders who trade in other merchandise, are caught up in the endless waves of the pain of Maya.

ਓਇ ਜੇਹੈ ਵਣਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇਆ ਫਲੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

ओइ जेहै वणजि हरि लाइआ फलु तेहा तिन पाइआ ॥३॥

Oi jehai va(nn)aji hari laaiaa phalu tehaa tin paaiaa ||3||

According to the business in which the Lord has placed them, so are the rewards they obtain. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਈ ॥

हरि हरि वणजु सो जनु करे जिसु क्रिपालु होइ प्रभु देई ॥

Hari hari va(nn)aju so janu kare jisu kripaalu hoi prbhu deee ||

People trade in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, when the God shows His Mercy and bestows it.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਲੇਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੭॥੪੫॥

जन नानक साहु हरि सेविआ फिरि लेखा मूलि न लेई ॥४॥१॥७॥४५॥

Jan naanak saahu hari seviaa phiri lekhaa mooli na leee ||4||1||7||45||

Servant Nanak serves the Lord, the Banker; he shall never again be called to render his account. ||4||1||7||45||

Jiu jananee garabhu paalatee sut kee kari aasaa ||

The mother nourishes the fetus in the womb, hoping for a son,

ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟਿ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ॥

वडा होइ धनु खाटि देइ करि भोग बिलासा ॥

Vadaa hoi dhanu khaati dei kari bhog bilaasaa ||

Who will grow and earn and give her money to enjoy herself.

ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਦਾ ਦੇ ਆਪਿ ਹਥਾਸਾ ॥੧॥

तिउ हरि जन प्रीति हरि राखदा दे आपि हथासा ॥१॥

Tiu hari jan preeti hari raakhadaa de aapi hathaasaa ||1||

In just the same way, the humble servant of the Lord loves the Lord, who extends His Helping Hand to us. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਸਈਆ ॥

मेरे राम मै मूरख हरि राखु मेरे गुसईआ ॥

Mere raam mai moorakh hari raakhu mere gusaeeaa ||

O my Lord, I am so foolish; save me, O my Lord God!

ਜਨ ਕੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਵਡਈਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जन की उपमा तुझहि वडईआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jan kee upamaa tujhahi vadaeeaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Your servant's praise is Your Own Glorious Greatness. ||1|| Pause ||

ਮੰਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

मंदरि घरि आनंदु हरि हरि जसु मनि भावै ॥

Manddari ghari aananddu hari hari jasu mani bhaavai ||

Those whose minds are pleased by the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, are joyful in the palaces of their own homes.

ਸਭ ਰਸ ਮੀਠੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥

सभ रस मीठे मुखि लगहि जा हरि गुण गावै ॥

Sabh ras meethe mukhi lagahi jaa hari gu(nn) gaavai ||

Their mouths savor all the sweet delicacies when they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ਸਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਇਕੀਹ ਕੁਲੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

हरि जनु परवारु सधारु है इकीह कुली सभु जगतु छडावै ॥२॥

Hari janu paravaaru sadhaaru hai ikeeh kulee sabhu jagatu chhadaavai ||2||

The Lord's humble servants are the saviors of their families; they save their families for twenty-one generations - they save the entire world! ||2||

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

जो किछु कीआ सो हरि कीआ हरि की वडिआई ॥

Jo kichhu keeaa so hari keeaa hari kee vadiaaee ||

Whatever has been done, has been done by the Lord; it is the Glorious Greatness of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਈ ॥

हरि जीअ तेरे तूं वरतदा हरि पूज कराई ॥

Hari jeea tere toonn varatadaa hari pooj karaaee ||

O Lord, in Your creatures, You are pervading; You inspire them to worship You.

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਲਹਾਇਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਾਈ ॥੩॥

हरि भगति भंडार लहाइदा आपे वरताई ॥३॥

Hari bhagati bhanddaar lahaaidaa aape varataaee ||3||

The Lord leads us to the treasure of devotional worship; He Himself bestows it. ||3||

ਲਾਲਾ ਹਾਟਿ ਵਿਹਾਝਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

लाला हाटि विहाझिआ किआ तिसु चतुराई ॥

Laalaa haati vihaajhiaa kiaa tisu chaturaaee ||

I am a slave, purchased in Your market; what clever tricks do I have?

ਜੇ ਰਾਜਿ ਬਹਾਲੇ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਲਾਮੁ ਘਾਸੀ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਢਾਈ ॥

जे राजि बहाले ता हरि गुलामु घासी कउ हरि नामु कढाई ॥

Je raaji bahaale taa hari gulaamu ghaasee kau hari naamu kadhaaee ||

If the Lord were to set me upon a throne, I would still be His slave. If I were a grass-cutter, I would still chant the Lord's Name.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੮॥੪੬॥

जनु नानकु हरि का दासु है हरि की वडिआई ॥४॥२॥८॥४६॥

Janu naanaku hari kaa daasu hai hari kee vadiaaee ||4||2||8||46||

Servant Nanak is the slave of the Lord; contemplate the Glorious Greatness of the Lord ||4||2||8||46||

नित दिनसु राति लालचु करे भरमै भरमाइआ ॥

Nit dinasu raati laalachu kare bharamai bharamaaiaa ||

Continuously, day and night, they are gripped by greed and deluded by doubt.

ਵੇਗਾਰਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਵੇਗਾਰੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਇਆ ॥

वेगारि फिरै वेगारीआ सिरि भारु उठाइआ ॥

Vegaari phirai vegaareeaa siri bhaaru uthaaiaa ||

The slaves labor in slavery, carrying the loads upon their heads.

ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਜਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

जो गुर की जनु सेवा करे सो घर कै कमि हरि लाइआ ॥१॥

Jo gur kee janu sevaa kare so ghar kai kammi hari laaiaa ||1||

That humble being who serves the Guru is put to work by the Lord in His Home. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਤੋੜਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰ ਕੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਲਾਇ ॥

मेरे राम तोड़ि बंधन माइआ घर कै कमि लाइ ॥

Mere raam to(rr)i banddhan maaiaa ghar kai kammi laai ||

O my Lord, please break these bonds of Maya, and put me to work in Your Home.

ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

नित हरि गुण गावह हरि नामि समाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Nit hari gu(nn) gaavah hari naami samaai ||1|| rahaau ||

I continuously sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; I am absorbed in the Lord's Name. ||1|| Pause ||

ਨਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰੇ ਨਰਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਅਰਥਿ ਸਭ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

नरु प्राणी चाकरी करे नरपति राजे अरथि सभ माइआ ॥

Naru praa(nn)ee chaakaree kare narapati raaje arathi sabh maaiaa ||

Mortal men work for kings, all for the sake of wealth and Maya.

ਕੈ ਬੰਧੈ ਕੈ ਡਾਨਿ ਲੇਇ ਕੈ ਨਰਪਤਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

कै बंधै कै डानि लेइ कै नरपति मरि जाइआ ॥

Kai banddhai kai daani lei kai narapati mari jaaiaa ||

But the king either imprisons them, or fines them, or else dies himself.

ਧੰਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

धंनु धनु सेवा सफल सतिगुरू की जितु हरि हरि नामु जपि हरि सुखु पाइआ ॥२॥

Dhannu dhanu sevaa saphal satiguroo kee jitu hari hari naamu japi hari sukhu paaiaa ||2||

Blessed, rewarding and fruitful is the service of the True Guru; through it, I chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and I have found peace. ||2||

ਨਿਤ ਸਉਦਾ ਸੂਦੁ ਕੀਚੈ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥

नित सउदा सूदु कीचै बहु भाति करि माइआ कै ताई ॥

Nit saudaa soodu keechai bahu bhaati kari maaiaa kai taaee ||

Everyday, people carry on their business, with all sorts of devices to earn interest, for the sake of Maya.

ਜਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਦੇਇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਨੇ ਤੋਟੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

जा लाहा देइ ता सुखु मने तोटै मरि जाई ॥

Jaa laahaa dei taa sukhu mane totai mari jaaee ||

If they earn a profit, they are pleased, but their hearts are broken by losses.

ਜੋ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਝੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥

जो गुण साझी गुर सिउ करे नित नित सुखु पाई ॥३॥

Jo gu(nn) saajhee gur siu kare nit nit sukhu paaee ||3||

One who is worthy, becomes a partner with the Guru, and finds a lasting peace forever. ||3||

ਜਿਤਨੀ ਭੂਖ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਹੈ ਤਿਤਨੀ ਭੂਖ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

जितनी भूख अन रस साद है तितनी भूख फिरि लागै ॥

Jitanee bhookh an ras saad hai titanee bhookh phiri laagai ||

The more one feels hunger for other tastes and pleasures, the more this hunger persists.

ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਵੇਚੇ ਸਿਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ॥

जिसु हरि आपि क्रिपा करे सो वेचे सिरु गुर आगै ॥

Jisu hari aapi kripaa kare so veche siru gur aagai ||

Those unto whom the Lord Himself shows mercy, sell their head to the Guru.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੦॥੪੮॥

जन नानक हरि रसि त्रिपतिआ फिरि भूख न लागै ॥४॥४॥१०॥४८॥

Jan naanak hari rasi tripatiaa phiri bhookh na laagai ||4||4||10||48||

Servant Nanak is satisfied by the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. He shall never feel hungry again. ||4||4||10||48||

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਉ ਦੇਖਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥

हमरै मनि चिति हरि आस नित किउ देखा हरि दरसु तुमारा ॥

Hamarai mani chiti hari aas nit kiu dekhaa hari darasu tumaaraa ||

Within my conscious mind is the constant longing for the Lord. How can I behold the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan, Lord?

ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਸੋ ਜਾਣਤਾ ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

जिनि प्रीति लाई सो जाणता हमरै मनि चिति हरि बहुतु पिआरा ॥

Jini preeti laaee so jaa(nn)ataa hamarai mani chiti hari bahutu piaaraa ||

One who loves the Lord knows this; the Lord is very dear to my conscious mind.

ਹਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਿਰਜਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

हउ कुरबानी गुर आपणे जिनि विछुड़िआ मेलिआ मेरा सिरजनहारा ॥१॥

Hau kurabaanee gur aapa(nn)e jini vichhu(rr)iaa meliaa meraa sirajanahaaraa ||1||

I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has re-united me with my Creator Lord; I was separated from Him for such a long time! ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥

मेरे राम हम पापी सरणि परे हरि दुआरि ॥

Mere raam ham paapee sara(nn)i pare hari duaari ||

O my Lord, I am a sinner; I have come to Your Sanctuary, and fallen at Your Door, Lord.

ਮਤੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਹਮ ਮੇਲੈ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मतु निरगुण हम मेलै कबहूं अपुनी किरपा धारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Matu niragu(nn) ham melai kabahoonn apunee kirapaa dhaari ||1|| rahaau ||

My intellect is worthless; I am filthy and polluted. Please shower me with Your Mercy sometime. ||1|| Pause ||

ਹਮਰੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਹਰਿ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

हमरे अवगुण बहुतु बहुतु है बहु बार बार हरि गणत न आवै ॥

Hamare avagu(nn) bahutu bahutu hai bahu baar baar hari ga(nn)at na aavai ||

My demerits are so many and numerous. I have sinned so many times, over and over again. O Lord, they cannot be counted.

ਤੂੰ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

तूं गुणवंता हरि हरि दइआलु हरि आपे बखसि लैहि हरि भावै ॥

Toonn gu(nn)avanttaa hari hari daiaalu hari aape bakhasi laihi hari bhaavai ||

You, Lord, are the Merciful Treasure of Virtue. When it pleases You, Lord, You forgive me.

ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਦੀਓ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

हम अपराधी राखे गुर संगती उपदेसु दीओ हरि नामु छडावै ॥२॥

Ham aparaadhee raakhe gur sanggatee upadesu deeo hari naamu chhadaavai ||2||

I am a sinner, saved only by the Company of the Guru. He has bestowed the Teachings of the Lord's Name, which saves me. ||2||

ਤੁਮਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ ਜਬ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਲਹ ਤਬ ਬਿਸਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

तुमरे गुण किआ कहा मेरे सतिगुरा जब गुरु बोलह तब बिसमु होइ जाइ ॥

Tumare gu(nn) kiaa kahaa mere satiguraa jab guru bolah tab bisamu hoi jaai ||

What Glorious Virtues of Yours can I describe, O my True Guru? When the Guru speaks, I am transfixed with wonder.

ਹਮ ਜੈਸੇ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਖੈ ਜੈਸੇ ਹਮ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਛਡਾਇ ॥

हम जैसे अपराधी अवरु कोई राखै जैसे हम सतिगुरि राखि लीए छडाइ ॥

Ham jaise aparaadhee avaru koee raakhai jaise ham satiguri raakhi leee chhadaai ||

Can anyone else save a sinner like me? The True Guru has protected and saved me.

ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਤਾ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੰਧਪੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਖਾ ਸਖਾਇ ॥੩॥

तूं गुरु पिता तूंहै गुरु माता तूं गुरु बंधपु मेरा सखा सखाइ ॥३॥

Toonn guru pitaa toonhhai guru maataa toonn guru banddhapu meraa sakhaa sakhaai ||3||

O Guru, You are my father. O Guru, You are my mother. O Guru, You are my relative, companion and friend. ||3||

ਜੋ ਹਮਰੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੋਤੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾ ਸਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਤੁਮ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਆਪੇ ॥

जो हमरी बिधि होती मेरे सतिगुरा सा बिधि तुम हरि जाणहु आपे ॥

Jo hamaree bidhi hotee mere satiguraa saa bidhi tum hari jaa(nn)ahu aape ||

My condition, O my True Guru - that condition, O Lord, is known only to You.

ਹਮ ਰੁਲਤੇ ਫਿਰਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੂਛਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਕੀਰੇ ਹਮ ਥਾਪੇ ॥

हम रुलते फिरते कोई बात न पूछता गुर सतिगुर संगि कीरे हम थापे ॥

Ham rulate phirate koee baat na poochhataa gur satigur sanggi keere ham thaape ||

I was rolling around in the dirt, and no one cared for me at all. In the Company of the Guru, the True Guru, I, the worm, have been raised up and exalted.

ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕੇਰਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਚੂਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੧॥੪੯॥

धंनु धंनु गुरू नानक जन केरा जितु मिलिऐ चूके सभि सोग संतापे ॥४॥५॥११॥४९॥

Dhannu dhannu guroo naanak jan keraa jitu miliai chooke sabhi sog santtaape ||4||5||11||49||

Blessed, blessed is the Guru of servant Nanak; meeting Him, all my sorrows and troubles have come to an end. ||4||5||11||49||

कंचन नारी महि जीउ लुभतु है मोहु मीठा माइआ ॥

Kancchan naaree mahi jeeu lubhatu hai mohu meethaa maaiaa ||

The soul of the man is lured by gold and women; emotional attachment to Maya is so sweet to him.

ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਘੋੜੇ ਖੁਸੀ ਮਨੁ ਅਨ ਰਸਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

घर मंदर घोड़े खुसी मनु अन रसि लाइआ ॥

Ghar manddar gho(rr)e khusee manu an rasi laaiaa ||

The mind has become attached to the pleasures of houses, palaces, horses and other enjoyments.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

हरि प्रभु चिति न आवई किउ छूटा मेरे हरि राइआ ॥१॥

Hari prbhu chiti na aavaee kiu chhootaa mere hari raaiaa ||1||

The Lord God does not even enter his thoughts; how can he be saved, O my Lord King? ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਇਹ ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

मेरे राम इह नीच करम हरि मेरे ॥

Mere raam ih neech karam hari mere ||

O my Lord, these are my lowly actions, O my Lord.

ਗੁਣਵੰਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਸਭਿ ਮੇਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुणवंता हरि हरि दइआलु करि किरपा बखसि अवगण सभि मेरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Gu(nn)avanttaa hari hari daiaalu kari kirapaa bakhasi avaga(nn) sabhi mere ||1|| rahaau ||

O Lord, Har, Har, Treasure of Virtue, Merciful Lord: please bless me with Your Grace and forgive me for all my mistakes. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕਿਛੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਢੰਗੁ ਨ ਮੇਰਾ ॥

किछु रूपु नही किछु जाति नाही किछु ढंगु न मेरा ॥

Kichhu roopu nahee kichhu jaati naahee kichhu dhanggu na meraa ||

I have no beauty, no social status, no manners.

ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਲੈ ਬੋਲਹ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਨ ਤੇਰਾ ॥

किआ मुहु लै बोलह गुण बिहून नामु जपिआ न तेरा ॥

Kiaa muhu lai bolah gu(nn) bihoon naamu japiaa na teraa ||

With what face am I to speak? I have no virtue at all; I have not chanted Your Name.

ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਉਬਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇਰਾ ॥੨॥

हम पापी संगि गुर उबरे पुंनु सतिगुर केरा ॥२॥

Ham paapee sanggi gur ubare punnu satigur keraa ||2||

I am a sinner, saved only by the Company of the Guru. This is the generous blessing of the True Guru. ||2||

ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਮੁਖੁ ਨਕੁ ਦੀਆ ਵਰਤਣ ਕਉ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

सभु जीउ पिंडु मुखु नकु दीआ वरतण कउ पाणी ॥

Sabhu jeeu pinddu mukhu naku deeaa varata(nn) kau paa(nn)ee ||

He gave all beings souls, bodies, mouths, noses and water to drink.

ਅੰਨੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਦੀਆ ਰਸ ਅਨਿ ਭੋਗਾਣੀ ॥

अंनु खाणा कपड़ु पैनणु दीआ रस अनि भोगाणी ॥

Annu khaa(nn)aa kapa(rr)u paina(nn)u deeaa ras ani bhogaa(nn)ee ||

He gave them corn to eat, clothes to wear, and other pleasures to enjoy.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਸੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਪਸੂ ਹਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

जिनि दीए सु चिति न आवई पसू हउ करि जाणी ॥३॥

Jini deee su chiti na aavaee pasoo hau kari jaa(nn)ee ||3||

But they do not remember the One who gave them all this. The animals think that they made themselves! ||3||

ਸਭੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥

सभु कीता तेरा वरतदा तूं अंतरजामी ॥

Sabhu keetaa teraa varatadaa toonn anttarajaamee ||

You made them all; You are all-pervading. You are the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts.

ਹਮ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹ ਸਭੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥

हम जंत विचारे किआ करह सभु खेलु तुम सुआमी ॥

Ham jantt vichaare kiaa karah sabhu khelu tum suaamee ||

What can these wretched creatures do? This whole drama is Yours, O Lord and Master.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਾਟਿ ਵਿਹਾਝਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਲਮ ਗੁਲਾਮੀ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੨॥੫੦॥

जन नानकु हाटि विहाझिआ हरि गुलम गुलामी ॥४॥६॥१२॥५०॥

Jan naanaku haati vihaajhiaa hari gulam gulaamee ||4||6||12||50||

Servant Nanak was purchased in the slave-market. He is the slave of the Lord's slaves. ||4||6||12||50||

ਜਿਉ ਜਨਨੀ ਸੁਤੁ ਜਣਿ ਪਾਲਤੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥

जिउ जननी सुतु जणि पालती राखै नदरि मझारि ॥

Jiu jananee sutu ja(nn)i paalatee raakhai nadari majhaari ||

Just as the mother, having given birth to a son, feeds him and keeps him in her vision

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੇ ਗਿਰਾਸੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪੋਚਾਰਿ ॥

अंतरि बाहरि मुखि दे गिरासु खिनु खिनु पोचारि ॥

Anttari baahari mukhi de giraasu khinu khinu pochaari ||

- indoors and outdoors, she puts food in his mouth; each and every moment, she caresses him.

ਤਿਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਰਾਖਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੧॥

तिउ सतिगुरु गुरसिख राखता हरि प्रीति पिआरि ॥१॥

Tiu satiguru gurasikh raakhataa hari preeti piaari ||1||

In just the same way, the True Guru protects His GurSikhs, who love their Beloved Lord. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਹੈ ਇਆਣੇ ॥

मेरे राम हम बारिक हरि प्रभ के है इआणे ॥

Mere raam ham baarik hari prbh ke hai iaa(nn)e ||

O my Lord, we are just the ignorant children of our Lord God.

ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਧਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਦੇ ਕੀਏ ਸਿਆਣੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

धंनु धंनु गुरू गुरु सतिगुरु पाधा जिनि हरि उपदेसु दे कीए सिआणे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dhannu dhannu guroo guru satiguru paadhaa jini hari upadesu de keee siaa(nn)e ||1|| rahaau ||

Hail, hail, to the Guru, the Guru, the True Guru, the Divine Teacher who has made me wise through the Lord's Teachings. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜੈਸੀ ਗਗਨਿ ਫਿਰੰਤੀ ਊਡਤੀ ਕਪਰੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਵਾਲੀ ॥

जैसी गगनि फिरंती ऊडती कपरे बागे वाली ॥

Jaisee gagani phiranttee udatee kapare baage vaalee ||

The white flamingo circles through the sky,

ਓਹ ਰਾਖੈ ਚੀਤੁ ਪੀਛੈ ਬਿਚਿ ਬਚਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲੀ ॥

ओह राखै चीतु पीछै बिचि बचरे नित हिरदै सारि समाली ॥

Oh raakhai cheetu peechhai bichi bachare nit hiradai saari samaalee ||

But she keeps her young ones in her mind; she has left them behind, but she constantly remembers them in her heart.

ਤਿਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਰਖੈ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲੀ ॥੨॥

तिउ सतिगुर सिख प्रीति हरि हरि की गुरु सिख रखै जीअ नाली ॥२॥

Tiu satigur sikh preeti hari hari kee guru sikh rakhai jeea naalee ||2||

In just the same way, the True Guru loves His Sikhs. The Lord cherishes His GurSikhs, and keeps them clasped to His Heart. ||2||

ਜੈਸੇ ਕਾਤੀ ਤੀਸ ਬਤੀਸ ਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਮਾਸ ਰਤੁ ਕੇਰੀ ॥

जैसे काती तीस बतीस है विचि राखै रसना मास रतु केरी ॥

Jaise kaatee tees batees hai vichi raakhai rasanaa maas ratu keree ||

Just as the tongue, made of flesh and blood, is protected within the scissors of the thirty-two teeth

ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਮਾਸ ਕਾਤੀ ਕੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੇਰੀ ॥

कोई जाणहु मास काती कै किछु हाथि है सभ वसगति है हरि केरी ॥

Koee jaa(nn)ahu maas kaatee kai kichhu haathi hai sabh vasagati hai hari keree ||

Who thinks that the power lies in the flesh or the scissors? Everything is in the Power of the Lord.

ਤਿਉ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਪੈਜ ਜਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੩॥

तिउ संत जना की नर निंदा करहि हरि राखै पैज जन केरी ॥३॥

Tiu santt janaa kee nar ninddaa karahi hari raakhai paij jan keree ||3||

In just the same way, when someone slanders the Saint, the Lord preserves the honor of His servant. ||3||

ਭਾਈ ਮਤ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਕਿਸੀ ਕੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥

भाई मत कोई जाणहु किसी कै किछु हाथि है सभ करे कराइआ ॥

Bhaaee mat koee jaa(nn)ahu kisee kai kichhu haathi hai sabh kare karaaiaa ||

O Siblings of Destiny, let none think that they have any power. All act as the Lord causes them to act.

ਜਰਾ ਮਰਾ ਤਾਪੁ ਸਿਰਤਿ ਸਾਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਗਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

जरा मरा तापु सिरति सापु सभु हरि कै वसि है कोई लागि न सकै बिनु हरि का लाइआ ॥

Jaraa maraa taapu sirati saapu sabhu hari kai vasi hai koee laagi na sakai binu hari kaa laaiaa ||

Old age, death, fever, poisons and snakes - everything is in the Hands of the Lord. Nothing can touch anyone without the Lord's Order.

ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਅੰਤੀ ਅਉਸਰਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੩॥੫੧॥

ऐसा हरि नामु मनि चिति निति धिआवहु जन नानक जो अंती अउसरि लए छडाइआ ॥४॥७॥१३॥५१॥

Aisaa hari naamu mani chiti niti dhiaavahu jan naanak jo anttee ausari lae chhadaaiaa ||4||7||13||51||

Within your conscious mind, O servant Nanak, meditate forever on the Name of the Lord, who shall deliver you in the end. ||4||7||13||51||

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

गउड़ी बैरागणि महला ४ ॥

Gau(rr)ee bairaaga(nn)i mahalaa 4 ||

Gauree Bairaagan, Fourth Mehl:

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

जिसु मिलिऐ मनि होइ अनंदु सो सतिगुरु कहीऐ ॥

Jisu miliai mani hoi ananddu so satiguru kaheeai ||

Meeting Him, the mind is filled with bliss. He is called the True Guru.

ਮਨ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਹਰਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੧॥

मन की दुबिधा बिनसि जाइ हरि परम पदु लहीऐ ॥१॥

Man kee dubidhaa binasi jaai hari param padu laheeai ||1||

Double-mindedness departs, and the supreme status of the Lord is obtained. ||1||

ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ॥

मेरा सतिगुरु पिआरा कितु बिधि मिलै ॥

Meraa satiguru piaaraa kitu bidhi milai ||

How can I meet my Beloved True Guru?

ਹਉ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਕਰੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ खिनु खिनु करी नमसकारु मेरा गुरु पूरा किउ मिलै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau khinu khinu karee namasakaaru meraa guru pooraa kiu milai ||1|| rahaau ||

Each and every moment, I humbly bow to Him. How will I meet my Perfect Guru? ||1|| Pause ||

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

करि किरपा हरि मेलिआ मेरा सतिगुरु पूरा ॥

Kari kirapaa hari meliaa meraa satiguru pooraa ||

Granting His Grace, the Lord has led me to meet my Perfect True Guru.

ਇਛ ਪੁੰਨੀ ਜਨ ਕੇਰੀਆ ਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਧੂਰਾ ॥੨॥

इछ पुंनी जन केरीआ ले सतिगुर धूरा ॥२॥

Ichh punnee jan kereeaa le satigur dhooraa ||2||

The desire of His humble servant has been fulfilled. I have received the dust of the Feet of the True Guru. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਣੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੀਐ ॥

हरि भगति द्रिड़ावै हरि भगति सुणै तिसु सतिगुर मिलीऐ ॥

Hari bhagati dri(rr)aavai hari bhagati su(nn)ai tisu satigur mileeai ||

Those who meet the True Guru implant devotional worship to the Lord, and listen to this devotional worship of the Lord.

ਤੋਟਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਭੁ ਨਿਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੀਐ ॥੩॥

तोटा मूलि न आवई हरि लाभु निति द्रिड़ीऐ ॥३॥

Totaa mooli na aavaee hari laabhu niti dri(rr)eeai ||3||

They never suffer any loss; they continually earn the profit of the Lord. ||3||

ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

जिस कउ रिदै विगासु है भाउ दूजा नाही ॥

Jis kau ridai vigaasu hai bhaau doojaa naahee ||

One whose heart blossoms forth, is not in love with duality.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਉਧਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾਹੀ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੪॥੫੨॥

नानक तिसु गुर मिलि उधरै हरि गुण गावाही ॥४॥८॥१४॥५२॥

Naanak tisu gur mili udharai hari gu(nn) gaavaahee ||4||8||14||52||

O Nanak, meeting the Guru, one is saved, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||8||14||52||

दय गुसाई मीतुला तूं संगि हमारै बासु जीउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Day gusaaee meetulaa toonn sanggi hamaarai baasu jeeu ||1|| rahaau ||

O Dear Lord God, my Best Friend, please, abide with me. ||1|| Pause ||

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਰਹਣਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

तुझ बिनु घरी न जीवना ध्रिगु रहणा संसारि ॥

Tujh binu gharee na jeevanaa dhrigu raha(nn)aa sanssaari ||

Without You, I cannot live, even for an instant, and my life in this world is cursed.

ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਿਆ ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮਖ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿ ਜੀ ॥੧॥

जीअ प्राण सुखदातिआ निमख निमख बलिहारि जी ॥१॥

Jeea praa(nn) sukhadaatiaa nimakh nimakh balihaari jee ||1||

O Breath of Life of the soul, O Giver of peace, each and every instant I am a sacrifice to You. ||1||

ਹਸਤ ਅਲੰਬਨੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਗਰਤਹੁ ਉਧਰੁ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥

हसत अल्मबनु देहु प्रभ गरतहु उधरु गोपाल ॥

Hasat alambbanu dehu prbh garatahu udharu gopaal ||

Please, God, give me the Support of Your Hand; lift me up and pull me out of this pit, O Lord of the World.

ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਮਤਿ ਥੋਰੀਆ ਤੂੰ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੨॥

मोहि निरगुन मति थोरीआ तूं सद ही दीन दइआल ॥२॥

Mohi niragun mati thoreeaa toonn sad hee deen daiaal ||2||

I am worthless, with such a shallow intellect; You are always Merciful to the meek. ||2||

ਕਿਆ ਸੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਮਲਾ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਧੀ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥

किआ सुख तेरे समला कवन बिधी बीचार ॥

Kiaa sukh tere sammalaa kavan bidhee beechaar ||

What comforts of Yours can I dwell upon? How can I contemplate You?

ਸਰਣਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਦਾਸ ਹਿਤ ਊਚੇ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੩॥

सरणि समाई दास हित ऊचे अगम अपार ॥३॥

Sara(nn)i samaaee daas hit uche agam apaar ||3||

You lovingly absorb Your slaves into Your Sanctuary, O Lofty, Inaccessible and Infinite Lord. ||3||

ਸਗਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਾਮ ਮਹਾ ਰਸ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

सगल पदारथ असट सिधि नाम महा रस माहि ॥

Sagal padaarath asat sidhi naam mahaa ras maahi ||

All wealth, and the eight miraculous spiritual powers are in the supremely sublime essence of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਕੇਸਵਾ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਿ ॥੪॥

सुप्रसंन भए केसवा से जन हरि गुण गाहि ॥४॥

Suprsann bhae kesavaa se jan hari gu(nn) gaahi ||4||

Those humble beings, with whom the beautifully-haired Lord is thoroughly pleased, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪੋ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰ ॥

मात पिता सुत बंधपो तूं मेरे प्राण अधार ॥

Maat pitaa sut banddhapo toonn mere praa(nn) adhaar ||

You are my mother, father, son and relative; You are the Support of the breath of life.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭਜੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੫॥੧॥੧੧੬॥

साधसंगि नानकु भजै बिखु तरिआ संसारु ॥५॥१॥११६॥

Saadhasanggi naanaku bhajai bikhu tariaa sanssaaru ||5||1||116||

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, Nanak meditates on the Lord, and swims across the poisonous world-ocean. ||5||1||116||

Is there anyone who will sing of the Beloved Lord?

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੂਖ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सरब कलिआण सूख सचु पावै ॥ रहाउ ॥

Sarab kaliaa(nn) sookh sachu paavai || rahaau ||

Surely, this will bring all pleasures and comforts. || Pause ||

ਬਨੁ ਬਨੁ ਖੋਜਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥

बनु बनु खोजत फिरत बैरागी ॥

Banu banu khojat phirat bairaagee ||

The renunciate goes out into the woods, searching for Him.

ਬਿਰਲੇ ਕਾਹੂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

बिरले काहू एक लिव लागी ॥

Birale kaahoo ek liv laagee ||

But those who embrace love for the One Lord are very rare.

ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੧॥

जिनि हरि पाइआ से वडभागी ॥१॥

Jini hari paaiaa se vadabhaagee ||1||

Those who find the Lord are very fortunate and blessed. ||1||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕ ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਚਾਹੈ ॥

ब्रहमादिक सनकादिक चाहै ॥

Brhamaadik sanakaadik chaahai ||

The Gods like Brahma and Sanak yearn for Him;

ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਸਿਧ ਹਰਿ ਆਹੈ ॥

जोगी जती सिध हरि आहै ॥

Jogee jatee sidh hari aahai ||

The Yogis, celibates and Siddhas yearn for the Lord.

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹੈ ॥੨॥

जिसहि परापति सो हरि गुण गाहै ॥२॥

Jisahi paraapati so hari gu(nn) gaahai ||2||

One who is so blessed, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਜਿਨ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

ता की सरणि जिन बिसरत नाही ॥

Taa kee sara(nn)i jin bisarat naahee ||

I seek the Sanctuary of those who have not forgotten Him.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਾਹੀ ॥

वडभागी हरि संत मिलाही ॥

Vadabhaagee hari santt milaahee ||

By great good fortune, one meets the Lord's Saint.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਤਿਹ ਮੂਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੩॥

जनम मरण तिह मूले नाही ॥३॥

Janam mara(nn) tih moole naahee ||3||

They are not subject to the cycle of birth and death. ||3||

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮਿਲੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

करि किरपा मिलु प्रीतम पिआरे ॥

Kari kirapaa milu preetam piaare ||

Show Your Mercy, and lead me to meet You, O my Darling Beloved.

ਬਿਨਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਊਚ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥

बिनउ सुनहु प्रभ ऊच अपारे ॥

Binau sunahu prbh uch apaare ||

Hear my prayer, O Lofty and Infinite God;

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮਾਂਗਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੧੭॥

नानकु मांगतु नामु अधारे ॥४॥१॥११७॥

Naanaku maangatu naamu adhaare ||4||1||117||

Nanak begs for the Support of Your Name. ||4||1||117||

Jiu gaaee kau goilee raakhahi kari saaraa ||

As the dairy farmer watches over and protects his cows,

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪਾਲਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਆਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

अहिनिसि पालहि राखि लेहि आतम सुखु धारा ॥१॥

Ahinisi paalahi raakhi lehi aatam sukhu dhaaraa ||1||

so does the Lord cherish and protect us, night and day. He blesses the soul with peace. ||1||

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

इत उत राखहु दीन दइआला ॥

It ut raakhahu deen daiaalaa ||

Please protect me here and hereafter, O Lord, Merciful to the meek.

ਤਉ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तउ सरणागति नदरि निहाला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tau sara(nn)aagati nadari nihaalaa ||1|| rahaau ||

I seek Your Sanctuary; please bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||1||Pause||

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਰਖੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

जह देखउ तह रवि रहे रखु राखनहारा ॥

Jah dekhau tah ravi rahe rakhu raakhanahaaraa ||

Wherever I look, there You are. Save me, O Savior Lord!

ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

तूं दाता भुगता तूंहै तूं प्राण अधारा ॥२॥

Toonn daataa bhugataa toonhhai toonn praa(nn) adhaaraa ||2||

You are the Giver, and You are the Enjoyer; You are the Support of the breath of life. ||2||

ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਅਧ ਊਰਧੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

किरतु पइआ अध ऊरधी बिनु गिआन बीचारा ॥

Kiratu paiaa adh uradhee binu giaan beechaaraa ||

According to the karma of past actions, people descend to the depths or rise to the heights, unless they contemplate spiritual wisdom.

ਬਿਨੁ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੩॥

बिनु उपमा जगदीस की बिनसै न अंधिआरा ॥३॥

Binu upamaa jagadees kee binasai na anddhiaaraa ||3||

Without the Praises of the Lord of the Universe, the darkness is not dispelled. ||3||

ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਲੋਭੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥

जगु बिनसत हम देखिआ लोभे अहंकारा ॥

Jagu binasat ham dekhiaa lobhe ahankkaaraa ||

I have seen the world being destroyed by greed and egotism.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥

गुर सेवा प्रभु पाइआ सचु मुकति दुआरा ॥४॥

Gur sevaa prbhu paaiaa sachu mukati duaaraa ||4||

Only by serving the Guru is God obtained, and the true gate of liberation found. ||4||

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਪਾਰ ਕੋ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

निज घरि महलु अपार को अपर्मपरु सोई ॥

Nij ghari mahalu apaar ko aparampparu soee ||

The Mansion of the Infinite Lord's Presence is within the home of one's own being. He is beyond any boundaries.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥

बिनु सबदै थिरु को नही बूझै सुखु होई ॥५॥

Binu sabadai thiru ko nahee boojhai sukhu hoee ||5||

Without the Word of the Shabad, nothing shall endure. Through understanding, peace is obtained. ||5||

ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਾ ॥

किआ लै आइआ ले जाइ किआ फासहि जम जाला ॥

Kiaa lai aaiaa le jaai kiaa phaasahi jam jaalaa ||

What have you brought, and what will you take away, when you are caught by the noose of Death?

ਡੋਲੁ ਬਧਾ ਕਸਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਪਤਾਲਾ ॥੬॥

डोलु बधा कसि जेवरी आकासि पताला ॥६॥

Dolu badhaa kasi jevaree aakaasi pataalaa ||6||

Like the bucket tied to the rope in the well, you are pulled up to the Akaashic Ethers, and then lowered down to the nether regions of the underworld. ||6||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

गुरमति नामु न वीसरै सहजे पति पाईऐ ॥

Guramati naamu na veesarai sahaje pati paaeeai ||

Follow the Guru's Teachings, and do not forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; you shall automatically obtain honor.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੭॥

अंतरि सबदु निधानु है मिलि आपु गवाईऐ ॥७॥

Anttari sabadu nidhaanu hai mili aapu gavaaeeai ||7||

Deep within the self is the treasure of the Shabad; it is obtained only by eradicating selfishness and conceit. ||7||

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣੀ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

नदरि करे प्रभु आपणी गुण अंकि समावै ॥

Nadari kare prbhu aapa(nn)ee gu(nn) ankki samaavai ||

When God bestows His Glance of Grace, people settle in the Lap of the Virtuous Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧॥੧੭॥

नानक मेलु न चूकई लाहा सचु पावै ॥८॥१॥१७॥

Naanak melu na chookaee laahaa sachu paavai ||8||1||17||

O Nanak, this Union cannot be broken; the true profit is obtained. ||8||1||17||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੁਹ ਫੇਰੇ ਤੇ ਵੇਮੁਖ ਬੁਰੇ ਦਿਸੰਨਿ ॥

सतिगुर ते जो मुह फेरे ते वेमुख बुरे दिसंनि ॥

Satigur te jo muh phere te vemukh bure disanni ||

Those who turn their faces away from the True Guru, are seen to be unfaithful and evil.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਨਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵੇਲਾ ਨਾ ਲਹੰਨਿ ॥੧॥

अनदिनु बधे मारीअनि फिरि वेला ना लहंनि ॥१॥

Anadinu badhe maareeani phiri velaa naa lahanni ||1||

They shall be bound and beaten night and day; they shall not have this opportunity again. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

हरि हरि राखहु क्रिपा धारि ॥

Hari hari raakhahu kripaa dhaari ||

O Lord, please shower Your Mercy upon me, and save me!

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सतसंगति मेलाइ प्रभ हरि हिरदै हरि गुण सारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Satasanggati melaai prbh hari hiradai hari gu(nn) saari ||1|| rahaau ||

O Lord God, please lead me to meet the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, that I may dwell upon the Glorious Praises of the Lord within my heart. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਇ ਚਲੰਨਿ ॥

से भगत हरि भावदे जो गुरमुखि भाइ चलंनि ॥

Se bhagat hari bhaavade jo guramukhi bhaai chalanni ||

Those devotees are pleasing to the Lord, who as Gurmukh, walk in harmony with the Way of the Lord's Will.

ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨਿ ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਏ ਰਹੰਨਿ ॥੨॥

आपु छोडि सेवा करनि जीवत मुए रहंनि ॥२॥

Aapu chhodi sevaa karani jeevat mue rahanni ||2||

Subduing their selfishness and conceit, and performing selfless service, they remain dead while yet alive. ||2||

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰਾਣ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥

जिस दा पिंडु पराण है तिस की सिरि कार ॥

Jis daa pinddu paraa(nn) hai tis kee siri kaar ||

The body and the breath of life belong to the One - perform the greatest service to Him.

ਓਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

ओहु किउ मनहु विसारीऐ हरि रखीऐ हिरदै धारि ॥३॥

Ohu kiu manahu visaareeai hari rakheeai hiradai dhaari ||3||

Why forget Him from your mind? Keep the Lord enshrined in your heart. ||3||

ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

नामि मिलिऐ पति पाईऐ नामि मंनिऐ सुखु होइ ॥

Naami miliai pati paaeeai naami manniai sukhu hoi ||

Receiving the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one obtains honor; believing in the Naam, one is at peace.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥

सतिगुर ते नामु पाईऐ करमि मिलै प्रभु सोइ ॥४॥

Satigur te naamu paaeeai karami milai prbhu soi ||4||

The Naam is obtained from the True Guru; by His Grace, God is found. ||4||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮੁਹੁ ਫੇਰੇ ਓਇ ਭ੍ਰਮਦੇ ਨਾ ਟਿਕੰਨਿ ॥

सतिगुर ते जो मुहु फेरे ओइ भ्रमदे ना टिकंनि ॥

Satigur te jo muhu phere oi bhrmade naa tikanni ||

They turn their faces away from the True Guru; they continue to wander aimlessly.

ਧਰਤਿ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਝਲਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਪਏ ਪਚੰਨਿ ॥੫॥

धरति असमानु न झलई विचि विसटा पए पचंनि ॥५॥

Dharati asamaanu na jhalaee vichi visataa pae pachanni ||5||

They are not accepted by the earth or the sky; they fall into manure, and rot. ||5||

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

इहु जगु भरमि भुलाइआ मोह ठगउली पाइ ॥

Ihu jagu bharami bhulaaiaa moh thagaulee paai ||

This world is deluded by doubt - it has taken the drug of emotional attachment.

ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਭਿਟੈ ਮਾਇ ॥੬॥

जिना सतिगुरु भेटिआ तिन नेड़ि न भिटै माइ ॥६॥

Jinaa satiguru bhetiaa tin ne(rr)i na bhitai maai ||6||

Maya does not draw near those who have met with the True Guru. ||6||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੋ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

सतिगुरु सेवनि सो सोहणे हउमै मैलु गवाइ ॥

Satiguru sevani so soha(nn)e haumai mailu gavaai ||

Those who serve the True Guru are very beautiful; they cast off the filth of selfishness and conceit.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੭॥

सबदि रते से निरमले चलहि सतिगुर भाइ ॥७॥

Sabadi rate se niramale chalahi satigur bhaai ||7||

Those who are attuned to the Shabad are immaculate and pure. They walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. ||7||

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

हरि प्रभ दाता एकु तूं तूं आपे बखसि मिलाइ ॥

Hari prbh daataa eku toonn toonn aape bakhasi milaai ||

O Lord God, You are the One and Only Giver; You forgive us, and unite us with Yourself.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਛਡਾਇ ॥੮॥੧॥੯॥

जनु नानकु सरणागती जिउ भावै तिवै छडाइ ॥८॥१॥९॥

Janu naanaku sara(nn)aagatee jiu bhaavai tivai chhadaai ||8||1||9||

Servant Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary; if it is Your Will, please save him! ||8||1||9||

जीवत पितर न मानै कोऊ मूएं सिराध कराही ॥

Jeevat pitar na maanai kou mooen siraadh karaahee ||

He does not honor his ancestors while they are alive, but he holds feasts in their honor after they have died.

ਪਿਤਰ ਭੀ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਕਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਕਊਆ ਕੂਕਰ ਖਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

पितर भी बपुरे कहु किउ पावहि कऊआ कूकर खाही ॥१॥

Pitar bhee bapure kahu kiu paavahi kauaa kookar khaahee ||1||

Tell me, how can his poor ancestors receive what the crows and the dogs have eaten up? ||1||

ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

मो कउ कुसलु बतावहु कोई ॥

Mo kau kusalu bataavahu koee ||

If only someone would tell me what real happiness is!

ਕੁਸਲੁ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਭੀ ਕੈਸੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कुसलु कुसलु करते जगु बिनसै कुसलु भी कैसे होई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kusalu kusalu karate jagu binasai kusalu bhee kaise hoee ||1|| rahaau ||

Speaking of happiness and joy, the world is perishing. How can happiness be found? ||1|| Pause ||

ਮਾਟੀ ਕੇ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਜੀਉ ਦੇਹੀ ॥

माटी के करि देवी देवा तिसु आगै जीउ देही ॥

Maatee ke kari devee devaa tisu aagai jeeu dehee ||

Making gods and goddesses out of clay, people sacrifice living beings to them.

ਐਸੇ ਪਿਤਰ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਆਪਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਨ ਲੇਹੀ ॥੨॥

ऐसे पितर तुमारे कहीअहि आपन कहिआ न लेही ॥२॥

Aise pitar tumaare kaheeahi aapan kahiaa na lehee ||2||

Such are your dead ancestors, who cannot ask for what they want. ||2||

ਸਰਜੀਉ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਨਿਰਜੀਉ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਕਉ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

सरजीउ काटहि निरजीउ पूजहि अंत काल कउ भारी ॥

Sarajeeu kaatahi nirajeeu poojahi antt kaal kau bhaaree ||

You murder living beings and worship lifeless things; at your very last moment, you shall suffer in terrible pain.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਭੈ ਡੂਬੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

राम नाम की गति नही जानी भै डूबे संसारी ॥३॥

Raam naam kee gati nahee jaanee bhai doobe sanssaaree ||3||

You do not know the value of the Lord's Name; you shall drown in the terrifying world-ocean. ||3||

ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਡੋਲਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਾ ॥

देवी देवा पूजहि डोलहि पारब्रहमु नही जाना ॥

Devee devaa poojahi dolahi paarabrhamu nahee jaanaa ||

You worship gods and goddesses, but you do not know the Supreme Lord God.

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਅਕੁਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੪੫॥

कहत कबीर अकुलु नही चेतिआ बिखिआ सिउ लपटाना ॥४॥१॥४५॥

Kahat kabeer akulu nahee chetiaa bikhiaa siu lapataanaa ||4||1||45||

Says Kabeer, you have not remembered the Lord who has no ancestors; you are clinging to your corrupt ways. ||4||1||45||

ਗਉੜੀ ਬੈਰਾਗਣਿ ਤਿਪਦੇ ॥

गउड़ी बैरागणि तिपदे ॥

Gau(rr)ee bairaaga(nn)i tipade ||

Gauree Bairaagan, Ti-Padas:

ਉਲਟਤ ਪਵਨ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਖਟੁ ਭੇਦੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁੰਨ ਅਨਰਾਗੀ ॥

उलटत पवन चक्र खटु भेदे सुरति सुंन अनरागी ॥

Ulatat pavan chakr khatu bhede surati sunn anaraagee ||

I turned my breath inwards, and pierced through the six chakras of the body, and my awareness was centered on the Primal Void of the Absolute Lord.

ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਤਾਸੁ ਖੋਜੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥੧॥

आवै न जाइ मरै न जीवै तासु खोजु बैरागी ॥१॥

Aavai na jaai marai na jeevai taasu khoju bairaagee ||1||

Search for the One who does not come or go, who does not die and is not born, O renunciate. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਉਲਟਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥

मेरे मन मन ही उलटि समाना ॥

Mere man man hee ulati samaanaa ||

My mind has turned away from the world, and is absorbed in the Mind of God.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਅਕਲਿ ਭਈ ਅਵਰੈ ਨਾਤਰੁ ਥਾ ਬੇਗਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादि अकलि भई अवरै नातरु था बेगाना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Gur parasaadi akali bhaee avarai naataru thaa begaanaa ||1|| rahaau ||

By Guru's Grace, my understanding has been changed; otherwise, I was totally ignorant. ||1|| Pause ||

ਨਿਵਰੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਦੂਰਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥

निवरै दूरि दूरि फुनि निवरै जिनि जैसा करि मानिआ ॥

Nivarai doori doori phuni nivarai jini jaisaa kari maaniaa ||

That which was near has become distant, and again, that which was distant is near, for those who realize the Lord as He is.

ਅਲਉਤੀ ਕਾ ਜੈਸੇ ਭਇਆ ਬਰੇਡਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥

अलउती का जैसे भइआ बरेडा जिनि पीआ तिनि जानिआ ॥२॥

Alautee kaa jaise bhaiaa baredaa jini peeaa tini jaaniaa ||2||

It is like the sugar water made from the candy; only one who drinks it knows its taste. ||2||

ਤੇਰੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਕਥਾ ਕਾਇ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਐ ਐਸਾ ਕੋਇ ਬਿਬੇਕੀ ॥

तेरी निरगुन कथा काइ सिउ कहीऐ ऐसा कोइ बिबेकी ॥

Teree niragun kathaa kaai siu kaheeai aisaa koi bibekee ||

Unto whom should I speak Your speech, O Lord; it is beyond the three qualities. Is there anyone with such discerning wisdom?

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਪਲੀਤਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਝਲ ਦੇਖੀ ॥੩॥੩॥੪੭॥

कहु कबीर जिनि दीआ पलीता तिनि तैसी झल देखी ॥३॥३॥४७॥

Kahu kabeer jini deeaa paleetaa tini taisee jhal dekhee ||3||3||47||

Says Kabeer, as is the fuse which you apply, so is the flash you will see. ||3||3||47||

घट अवघट डूगर घणा इकु निरगुणु बैलु हमार ॥

Ghat avaghat doogar gha(nn)aa iku niragu(nn)u bailu hamaar ||

The path to God is very treacherous and mountainous, and all I have is this worthless ox.

ਰਮਈਏ ਸਿਉ ਇਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

रमईए सिउ इक बेनती मेरी पूंजी राखु मुरारि ॥१॥

Ramaeee siu ik benatee meree poonjjee raakhu muraari ||1||

I offer this one prayer to the Lord, to preserve my capital. ||1||

ਕੋ ਬਨਜਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਟਾਂਡਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਜਾਇ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

को बनजारो राम को मेरा टांडा लादिआ जाइ रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ko banajaaro raam ko meraa taandaa laadiaa jaai re ||1|| rahaau ||

Is there any merchant of the Lord to join me? My cargo is loaded, and now I am leaving. ||1|| Pause ||

ਹਉ ਬਨਜਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਉ ਬੵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

हउ बनजारो राम को सहज करउ ब्यापारु ॥

Hau banajaaro raam ko sahaj karau byaapaaru ||

I am the merchant of the Lord; I deal in spiritual wisdom.

ਮੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦੀ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

मै राम नाम धनु लादिआ बिखु लादी संसारि ॥२॥

Mai raam naam dhanu laadiaa bikhu laadee sanssaari ||2||

I have loaded the Wealth of the Lord's Name; the world has loaded poison. ||2||

ਉਰਵਾਰ ਪਾਰ ਕੇ ਦਾਨੀਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਆਲ ਪਤਾਲੁ ॥

उरवार पार के दानीआ लिखि लेहु आल पतालु ॥

Uravaar paar ke daaneeaa likhi lehu aal pataalu ||

O you who know this world and the world beyond: write whatever nonsense you please about me.

ਮੋਹਿ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਈ ਤਜੀਲੇ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੩॥

मोहि जम डंडु न लागई तजीले सरब जंजाल ॥३॥

Mohi jam danddu na laagaee tajeele sarab janjjaal ||3||

The club of the Messenger of Death shall not strike me, since I have cast off all entanglements. ||3||

ਜੈਸਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਕਾ ਤੈਸਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

जैसा रंगु कसु्मभ का तैसा इहु संसारु ॥

Jaisaa ranggu kasumbbh kaa taisaa ihu sanssaaru ||

Love of this world is like the pale, temporary color of the safflower.

ਮੇਰੇ ਰਮਈਏ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਜੀਠ ਕਾ ਕਹੁ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਚਮਾਰ ॥੪॥੧॥

मेरे रमईए रंगु मजीठ का कहु रविदास चमार ॥४॥१॥

Mere ramaeee ranggu majeeth kaa kahu ravidaas chamaar ||4||1||

The color of my Lord's Love, however, is permanent, like the dye of the madder plant. So says Ravi Daas, the tanner. ||4||1||

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਤੁ ਤੇਤਾ ਜਗੀ ਦੁਆਪਰਿ ਪੂਜਾਚਾਰ ॥

सतजुगि सतु तेता जगी दुआपरि पूजाचार ॥

Satajugi satu tetaa jagee duaapari poojaachaar ||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, was Truth; in the Silver Age of Trayta Yuga, charitable feasts; in the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, there was worship.

ਤੀਨੌ ਜੁਗ ਤੀਨੌ ਦਿੜੇ ਕਲਿ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੧॥

तीनौ जुग तीनौ दिड़े कलि केवल नाम अधार ॥१॥

Teenau jug teenau di(rr)e kali keval naam adhaar ||1||

In those three ages, people held to these three ways. But in the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, the Name of the Lord is your only Support. ||1||

ਪਾਰੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਇਬੋ ਰੇ ॥

पारु कैसे पाइबो रे ॥

Paaru kaise paaibo re ||

How can I swim across?

ਮੋ ਸਉ ਕੋਊ ਨ ਕਹੈ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥

मो सउ कोऊ न कहै समझाइ ॥

Mo sau kou na kahai samajhaai ||

No one has explained to me,

ਜਾ ਤੇ ਆਵਾ ਗਵਨੁ ਬਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जा ते आवा गवनु बिलाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jaa te aavaa gavanu bilaai ||1|| rahaau ||

So that I might understand how I can escape reincarnation. ||1|| Pause ||

ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਧਰਮ ਨਿਰੂਪੀਐ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭ ਲੋਇ ॥

बहु बिधि धरम निरूपीऐ करता दीसै सभ लोइ ॥

Bahu bidhi dharam niroopeeai karataa deesai sabh loi ||

So many forms of religion have been described; the whole world is practicing them.

ਕਵਨ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜਿਹ ਸਾਧੇ ਸਭ ਸਿਧਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

कवन करम ते छूटीऐ जिह साधे सभ सिधि होइ ॥२॥

Kavan karam te chhooteeai jih saadhe sabh sidhi hoi ||2||

What actions will bring emancipation, and total perfection? ||2||

ਕਰਮ ਅਕਰਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਸੰਕਾ ਸੁਨਿ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ॥

करम अकरम बीचारीऐ संका सुनि बेद पुरान ॥

Karam akaram beechaareeai sankkaa suni bed puraan ||

One may distinguish between good and evil actions, and listen to the Vedas and the Puraanas,

ਸੰਸਾ ਸਦ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਹਿਰੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥

संसा सद हिरदै बसै कउनु हिरै अभिमानु ॥३॥

Sanssaa sad hiradai basai kaunu hirai abhimaanu ||3||

But doubt still persists. Skepticism continually dwells in the heart, so who can eradicate egotistical pride? ||3||

ਬਾਹਰੁ ਉਦਕਿ ਪਖਾਰੀਐ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਿਬਿਧਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

बाहरु उदकि पखारीऐ घट भीतरि बिबिधि बिकार ॥

Baaharu udaki pakhaareeai ghat bheetari bibidhi bikaar ||

Outwardly, he washes with water, but deep within, his heart is tarnished by all sorts of vices.

ਸੁਧ ਕਵਨ ਪਰ ਹੋਇਬੋ ਸੁਚ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਿਉਹਾਰ ॥੪॥

सुध कवन पर होइबो सुच कुंचर बिधि बिउहार ॥४॥

Sudh kavan par hoibo such kuncchar bidhi biuhaar ||4||

So how can he become pure? His method of purification is like that of an elephant, covering himself with dust right after his bath! ||4||

ਰਵਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ਰਜਨੀ ਜਥਾ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਨਤ ਸਭ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥

रवि प्रगास रजनी जथा गति जानत सभ संसार ॥

Ravi prgaas rajanee jathaa gati jaanat sabh sanssaar ||

With the rising of the sun, the night is brought to its end; the whole world knows this.

ਪਾਰਸ ਮਾਨੋ ਤਾਬੋ ਛੁਏ ਕਨਕ ਹੋਤ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਰ ॥੫॥

पारस मानो ताबो छुए कनक होत नही बार ॥५॥

Paaras maano taabo chhue kanak hot nahee baar ||5||

It is believed that with the touch of the Philosopher's Stone, copper is immediately transformed into gold. ||5||

ਪਰਮ ਪਰਸ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਪੂਰਬ ਲਿਖਤ ਲਿਲਾਟ ॥

परम परस गुरु भेटीऐ पूरब लिखत लिलाट ॥

Param paras guru bheteeai poorab likhat lilaat ||

When one meets the Supreme Philosopher's Stone, the Guru, if such pre-ordained destiny is written on one's forehead,

ਉਨਮਨ ਮਨ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਿਲੇ ਛੁਟਕਤ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ॥੬॥

उनमन मन मन ही मिले छुटकत बजर कपाट ॥६॥

Unaman man man hee mile chhutakat bajar kapaat ||6||

Then the soul blends with the Supreme Soul, and the stubborn doors are opened wide. ||6||

ਭਗਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

भगति जुगति मति सति करी भ्रम बंधन काटि बिकार ॥

Bhagati jugati mati sati karee bhrm banddhan kaati bikaar ||

Through the way of devotion, the intellect is imbued with Truth; doubts, entanglements and vices are cut away.

ਸੋਈ ਬਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਨ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੁਨ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਏਕ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੭॥

सोई बसि रसि मन मिले गुन निरगुन एक बिचार ॥७॥

Soee basi rasi man mile gun niragun ek bichaar ||7||

The mind is restrained, and one attains joy, contemplating the One Lord, who is both with and without qualities. ||7||

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹ ਕੀਏ ਟਾਰੀ ਨ ਟਰੈ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਫਾਸ ॥

अनिक जतन निग्रह कीए टारी न टरै भ्रम फास ॥

Anik jatan nigrh keee taaree na tarai bhrm phaas ||

I have tried many methods, but by turning it away, the noose of doubt is not turned away.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਊਪਜੈ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਉਦਾਸ ॥੮॥੧॥

प्रेम भगति नही ऊपजै ता ते रविदास उदास ॥८॥१॥

Prem bhagati nahee upajai taa te ravidaas udaas ||8||1||

Love and devotion have not welled up within me, and so Ravi Daas is sad and depressed. ||8||1||
