ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

अंतरि बाहरि अवरु न कोइ ॥

Ânŧŧari baahari âvaru na koī ||

Inwardly and outwardly, there is none other than Him.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

जो तिसु भावै सो फुनि होइ ॥

Jo ŧisu bhaavai so phuni hoī ||

Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass.

ਸੁਣਿ ਭਰਥਰਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

सुणि भरथरि नानकु कहै बीचारु ॥

Suñi bharaŧhari naanaku kahai beechaaru ||

Listen, O Bharthari Yogi - Nanak speaks after deliberation;

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧॥

निरमल नामु मेरा आधारु ॥८॥१॥

Niramal naamu meraa âađhaaru ||8||1||

The Immaculate Name is my only Support. ||8||1||

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਸਭਿ ਜਪ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

सभि जप सभि तप सभ चतुराई ॥

Sabhi jap sabhi ŧap sabh chaŧuraaëe ||

All meditation, all austerities, and all clever tricks,

ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮੈ ਰਾਹਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

ऊझड़ि भरमै राहि न पाई ॥

Ǖjhaɍi bharamai raahi na paaëe ||

Lead one to wander in the wilderness, but he does not find the Path.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

बिनु बूझे को थाइ न पाई ॥

Binu boojhe ko ŧhaaī na paaëe ||

Without understanding, he is not approved;

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਣੈ ਮਾਥੇ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥

नाम बिहूणै माथे छाई ॥१॥

Naam bihooñai maaŧhe chhaaëe ||1||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, ashes are thrown upon one's head. ||1||


ਸਾਚ ਧਣੀ ਜਗੁ ਆਇ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥

साच धणी जगु आइ बिनासा ॥

Saach đhañee jagu âaī binaasaa ||

True is the Master; the world comes and goes.

ਛੂਟਸਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

छूटसि प्राणी गुरमुखि दासा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Chhootasi praañee guramukhi đaasaa ||1|| rahaaū ||

The mortal is emancipated, as Gurmukh, as the Lord's slave. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਆਸਾ ॥

जगु मोहि बाधा बहुती आसा ॥

Jagu mohi baađhaa bahuŧee âasaa ||

The world is bound by its attachments to the many desires.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਇਕਿ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥

गुरमती इकि भए उदासा ॥

Guramaŧee īki bhaē ūđaasaa ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, some become free of desire.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

अंतरि नामु कमलु परगासा ॥

Ânŧŧari naamu kamalu paragaasaa ||

Within them is the Naam, and their heart lotus blossoms forth.

ਤਿਨੑ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਾ ॥੨॥

तिन्ह कउ नाही जम की त्रासा ॥२॥

Ŧinʱ kaū naahee jam kee ŧraasaa ||2||

They have no fear of death. ||2||


ਜਗੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ॥

जगु त्रिअ जितु कामणि हितकारी ॥

Jagu ŧriâ jiŧu kaamañi hiŧakaaree ||

The men of the world are conquered by woman; they love the ladies.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲਗਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥

पुत्र कलत्र लगि नामु विसारी ॥

Puŧr kalaŧr lagi naamu visaaree ||

Attached to children and wife, they forget the Naam.

ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥

बिरथा जनमु गवाइआ बाजी हारी ॥

Biraŧhaa janamu gavaaīâa baajee haaree ||

They waste this human life in vain, and lose the game in the gamble.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु सेवे करणी सारी ॥३॥

Saŧiguru seve karañee saaree ||3||

Serving the True Guru is the best occupation. ||3||


ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥

बाहरहु हउमै कहै कहाए ॥

Baaharahu haūmai kahai kahaaē ||

One who speaks egotistically in public,

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥

अंदरहु मुकतु लेपु कदे न लाए ॥

Ânđđarahu mukaŧu lepu kađe na laaē ||

Never attains liberation within.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

माइआ मोहु गुर सबदि जलाए ॥

Maaīâa mohu gur sabađi jalaaē ||

One who burns away his attachment to Maya, by the Word of the Guru's Shabad,

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੪॥

निरमल नामु सद हिरदै धिआए ॥४॥

Niramal naamu sađ hirađai đhiâaē ||4||

Meditates forever within his heart on the Immaculate Naam. ||4||


ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥

धावतु राखै ठाकि रहाए ॥

Đhaavaŧu raakhai thaaki rahaaē ||

He restrains his wandering mind, and keeps it under control.

ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

सिख संगति करमि मिलाए ॥

Sikh sanggaŧi karami milaaē ||

The company of such a Sikh is obtained only by Grace.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥

गुर बिनु भूलो आवै जाए ॥

Gur binu bhoolo âavai jaaē ||

Without the Guru, he goes astray and continues coming and going.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੫॥

नदरि करे संजोगि मिलाए ॥५॥

Nađari kare sanjjogi milaaē ||5||

Bestowing His Mercy, the Lord unites him in Union. ||5||


ਰੂੜੋ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥

रूड़ो कहउ न कहिआ जाई ॥

Rooɍo kahaū na kahiâa jaaëe ||

I cannot describe the Beauteous Lord.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਉ ਨਹ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

अकथ कथउ नह कीमति पाई ॥

Âkaŧh kaŧhaū nah keemaŧi paaëe ||

I speak the unspoken; I cannot estimate His value.

ਸਭ ਦੁਖ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੂਖ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

सभ दुख तेरे सूख रजाई ॥

Sabh đukh ŧere sookh rajaaëe ||

All pain and pleasure come by Your Will.

ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਈ ॥੬॥

सभि दुख मेटे साचै नाई ॥६॥

Sabhi đukh mete saachai naaëe ||6||

All pain is eradicated by the True Name. ||6||


ਕਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਵਾਜਾ ਪਗ ਬਿਨੁ ਤਾਲਾ ॥

कर बिनु वाजा पग बिनु ताला ॥

Kar binu vaajaa pag binu ŧaalaa ||

He plays the instrument without hands, and dances without feet.

ਜੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥

जे सबदु बुझै ता सचु निहाला ॥

Je sabađu bujhai ŧaa sachu nihaalaa ||

But if he understands the Word of the Shabad, then he shall behold the True Lord.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਭੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲਾ ॥

अंतरि साचु सभे सुख नाला ॥

Ânŧŧari saachu sabhe sukh naalaa ||

With the True Lord within the self, all happiness comes.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੭॥

नदरि करे राखै रखवाला ॥७॥

Nađari kare raakhai rakhavaalaa ||7||

Showering His Mercy, the Preserving Lord preserves him. ||7||


ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥

त्रिभवण सूझै आपु गवावै ॥

Ŧribhavañ soojhai âapu gavaavai ||

He understands the three worlds; he eliminates his self-conceit.

ਬਾਣੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

बाणी बूझै सचि समावै ॥

Baañee boojhai sachi samaavai ||

He understands the Bani of the Word, and he is absorbed into the True Lord.

ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥

सबदु वीचारे एक लिव तारा ॥

Sabađu veechaare ēk liv ŧaaraa ||

Contemplating the Shabad, he enshrines love for the One Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥੨॥

नानक धंनु सवारणहारा ॥८॥२॥

Naanak đhannu savaarañahaaraa ||8||2||

O Nanak, blessed is the Lord, the Embellisher. ||8||2||

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

लेख असंख लिखि लिखि मानु ॥

Lekh âsankkh likhi likhi maanu ||

There are innumerable writings; those who write them take pride in them.

ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਖਾਨੁ ॥

मनि मानिऐ सचु सुरति वखानु ॥

Mani maaniâi sachu suraŧi vakhaanu ||

When one's mind accepts the Truth, he understands, and speaks of it.

ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

कथनी बदनी पड़ि पड़ि भारु ॥

Kaŧhanee bađanee paɍi paɍi bhaaru ||

Words, spoken and read again and again, are useless loads.

ਲੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

लेख असंख अलेखु अपारु ॥१॥

Lekh âsankkh âlekhu âpaaru ||1||

There are innumerable writings, but the Infinite Lord remains unwritten. ||1||


ਐਸਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਤੂੰ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

ऐसा साचा तूं एको जाणु ॥

Âisaa saachaa ŧoonn ēko jaañu ||

Know that such a True Lord is the One and only.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जमणु मरणा हुकमु पछाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jammañu marañaa hukamu pachhaañu ||1|| rahaaū ||

Understand that birth and death come according to the Lord's Will. ||1|| Pause ||


ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥

माइआ मोहि जगु बाधा जमकालि ॥

Maaīâa mohi jagu baađhaa jamakaali ||

Because of attachment to Maya, the world is bound by the Messenger of Death.

ਬਾਂਧਾ ਛੂਟੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਿ ॥

बांधा छूटै नामु सम्हालि ॥

Baanđhaa chhootai naamu samʱaali ||

These bonds are released when one remembers the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥

गुरु सुखदाता अवरु न भालि ॥

Guru sukhađaaŧaa âvaru na bhaali ||

The Guru is the Giver of peace; do not look for any other.

ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

हलति पलति निबही तुधु नालि ॥२॥

Halaŧi palaŧi nibahee ŧuđhu naali ||2||

In this world, and the next, He shall stand by you. ||2||


ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥

सबदि मरै तां एक लिव लाए ॥

Sabađi marai ŧaan ēk liv laaē ||

One who dies in the Word of the Shabad, embraces love for the One Lord.

ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥

अचरु चरै तां भरमु चुकाए ॥

Âcharu charai ŧaan bharamu chukaaē ||

One who mends the difficult mind, has his doubts dispelled.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

जीवन मुकतु मनि नामु वसाए ॥

Jeevan mukaŧu mani naamu vasaaē ||

He is Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive; the Naam abides in his mind.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि होइ त सचि समाए ॥३॥

Guramukhi hoī ŧa sachi samaaē ||3||

Becoming Gurmukh, he merges into the True Lord. ||3||


ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਸਾਜੀ ਗਗਨੁ ਅਕਾਸੁ ॥

जिनि धर साजी गगनु अकासु ॥

Jini đhar saajee gaganu âkaasu ||

The One who created the earth and the Akaashic ethers of the sky,

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਭ ਥਾਪੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥

जिनि सभ थापी थापि उथापि ॥

Jini sabh ŧhaapee ŧhaapi ūŧhaapi ||

Established all; He establishes and disestablishes.

ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥

सरब निरंतरि आपे आपि ॥

Sarab niranŧŧari âape âapi ||

He Himself is permeating all.

ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਪੂਛੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥

किसै न पूछे बखसे आपि ॥४॥

Kisai na poochhe bakhase âapi ||4||

He does not consult anyone; He Himself forgives. ||4||


ਤੂ ਪੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰੁ ॥

तू पुरु सागरु माणक हीरु ॥

Ŧoo puru saagaru maañak heeru ||

You are the Ocean, over-flowing with jewels and rubies.

ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰੁ ॥

तू निरमलु सचु गुणी गहीरु ॥

Ŧoo niramalu sachu guñee gaheeru ||

You are immaculate and pure, the true treasure of virtue.

ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੁ ॥

सुखु मानै भेटै गुर पीरु ॥

Sukhu maanai bhetai gur peeru ||

Peace is enjoyed, meeting the Guru, the Spiritual Teacher.

ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਵਜੀਰੁ ॥੫॥

एको साहिबु एकु वजीरु ॥५॥

Ēko saahibu ēku vajeeru ||5||

The Lord is the only Master; He is the only Minister. ||5||


ਜਗੁ ਬੰਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਹਉ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

जगु बंदी मुकते हउ मारी ॥

Jagu banđđee mukaŧe haū maaree ||

The world is held in bondage; he alone is emancipated, who conquers his ego.

ਜਗਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਆਚਾਰੀ ॥

जगि गिआनी विरला आचारी ॥

Jagi giâanee viralaa âachaaree ||

How rare in the world is that wise person, who practices this.

ਜਗਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

जगि पंडितु विरला वीचारी ॥

Jagi panddiŧu viralaa veechaaree ||

How rare in this world is that scholar who reflects upon this.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੬॥

बिनु सतिगुरु भेटे सभ फिरै अहंकारी ॥६॥

Binu saŧiguru bhete sabh phirai âhankkaaree ||6||

Without meeting the True Guru, all wander in ego. ||6||


ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

जगु दुखीआ सुखीआ जनु कोइ ॥

Jagu đukheeâa sukheeâa janu koī ||

The world is unhappy; only a few are happy.

ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਇ ॥

जगु रोगी भोगी गुण रोइ ॥

Jagu rogee bhogee guñ roī ||

The world is diseased, from its indulgences; it weeps over its lost virtue.

ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥

जगु उपजै बिनसै पति खोइ ॥

Jagu ūpajai binasai paŧi khoī ||

The world wells up, and then subsides, losing its honor.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥

गुरमुखि होवै बूझै सोइ ॥७॥

Guramukhi hovai boojhai soī ||7||

He alone, who becomes Gurmukh, understands. ||7||


ਮਹਘੋ ਮੋਲਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥

महघो मोलि भारि अफारु ॥

Mahagho moli bhaari âphaaru ||

His price is so costly; His weight is unbearable.

ਅਟਲ ਅਛਲੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਧਾਰੁ ॥

अटल अछलु गुरमती धारु ॥

Âtal âchhalu guramaŧee đhaaru ||

He is immovable and undeceivable; enshrine Him in your mind, through the Guru's Teachings.

ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਭਇਕਾਰੁ ॥

भाइ मिलै भावै भइकारु ॥

Bhaaī milai bhaavai bhaīkaaru ||

Meet Him through love, become pleasing to Him, and act in fear of Him.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੩॥

नानकु नीचु कहै बीचारु ॥८॥३॥

Naanaku neechu kahai beechaaru ||8||3||

Nanak the lowly says this, after deep contemplation. ||8||3||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

आसा महला १ ॥

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਏਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ॥

एकु मरै पंचे मिलि रोवहि ॥

Ēku marai pancche mili rovahi ||

When someone dies, the five passions meet and mourn his death.

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ॥

हउमै जाइ सबदि मलु धोवहि ॥

Haūmai jaaī sabađi malu đhovahi ||

Overcoming self-conceit, he washes off his filth with the Word of the Shabad.

ਸਮਝਿ ਸੂਝਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥

समझि सूझि सहज घरि होवहि ॥

Samajhi soojhi sahaj ghari hovahi ||

One who knows and understands, enters the home of peace and poise.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ॥੧॥

बिनु बूझे सगली पति खोवहि ॥१॥

Binu boojhe sagalee paŧi khovahi ||1||

Without understanding, he loses all his honor. ||1||


ਕਉਣੁ ਮਰੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਓਹੀ ॥

कउणु मरै कउणु रोवै ओही ॥

Kaūñu marai kaūñu rovai õhee ||

Who dies, and who weeps for him?

ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਭਸੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਤੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

करण कारण सभसै सिरि तोही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Karañ kaarañ sabhasai siri ŧohee ||1|| rahaaū ||

O Lord, Creator, Cause of causes, You are over the heads of all. ||1|| Pause ||


ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

मूए कउ रोवै दुखु कोइ ॥

Mooē kaū rovai đukhu koī ||

Who weeps over the pain of the dead?

ਸੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੇਦਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

सो रोवै जिसु बेदन होइ ॥

So rovai jisu beđan hoī ||

Those who weep, do so over their own troubles.

ਜਿਸੁ ਬੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥

जिसु बीती जाणै प्रभ सोइ ॥

Jisu beeŧee jaañai prbh soī ||

God knows the condition of those who are so affected.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

आपे करता करे सु होइ ॥२॥

Âape karaŧaa kare su hoī ||2||

Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||2||


ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਰਣਾ ॥

जीवत मरणा तारे तरणा ॥

Jeevaŧ marañaa ŧaare ŧarañaa ||

One who remains dead while yet alive, is saved, and saves others as well.

ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਸਰਣਾ ॥

जै जगदीस परम गति सरणा ॥

Jai jagađees param gaŧi sarañaa ||

Celebrate the Victory of the Lord; taking to His Sanctuary, the supreme status is obtained.

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣਾ ॥

हउ बलिहारी सतिगुर चरणा ॥

Haū balihaaree saŧigur charañaa ||

I am a sacrifice to the feet of the True Guru.

ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੩॥

गुरु बोहिथु सबदि भै तरणा ॥३॥

Guru bohiŧhu sabađi bhai ŧarañaa ||3||

The Guru is the boat; through the Shabad of His Word, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over. ||3||


ਨਿਰਭਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ॥

निरभउ आपि निरंतरि जोति ॥

Nirabhaū âapi niranŧŧari joŧi ||

He Himself is Fearless; His Divine Light is contained in all.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਗਿ ਛੋਤਿ ॥

बिनु नावै सूतकु जगि छोति ॥

Binu naavai sooŧaku jagi chhoŧi ||

Without the Name, the world is defiled and untouchable.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਤਿ ॥

दुरमति बिनसै किआ कहि रोति ॥

Đuramaŧi binasai kiâa kahi roŧi ||

Through evil-mindedness, they are ruined; why should they cry out and weep?

ਜਨਮਿ ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥੪॥

जनमि मूए बिनु भगति सरोति ॥४॥

Janami mooē binu bhagaŧi saroŧi ||4||

They are born only to die, without hearing the music of devotional worship. ||4||


ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥

मूए कउ सचु रोवहि मीत ॥

Mooē kaū sachu rovahi meeŧ ||

Only one's true friends mourn one's death.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤ ॥

त्रै गुण रोवहि नीता नीत ॥

Ŧrai guñ rovahi neeŧaa neeŧ ||

Those under the sway of the three dispositions continue to mourn on and on.

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਚੀਤ ॥

दुखु सुखु परहरि सहजि सुचीत ॥

Đukhu sukhu parahari sahaji sucheeŧ ||

Disregarding pain and pleasure, center your consciousness on the Lord.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੫॥

तनु मनु सउपउ क्रिसन परीति ॥५॥

Ŧanu manu saūpaū krisan pareeŧi ||5||

Dedicate your body and mind to the Love of the Lord. ||5||


ਭੀਤਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖ ॥

भीतरि एकु अनेक असंख ॥

Bheeŧari ēku ânek âsankkh ||

The One Lord dwells within the various and countless beings.

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥

करम धरम बहु संख असंख ॥

Karam đharam bahu sankkh âsankkh ||

There are so many rituals and religious faiths, their number is innumerable.

ਬਿਨੁ ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰੰਥ ॥

बिनु भै भगती जनमु बिरंथ ॥

Binu bhai bhagaŧee janamu biranŧŧh ||

Without the Fear of God, and devotional worship, one's life is in vain.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਰਮਾਰੰਥ ॥੬॥

हरि गुण गावहि मिलि परमारंथ ॥६॥

Hari guñ gaavahi mili paramaaranŧŧh ||6||

Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the supreme wealth is obtained. ||6||


ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਿ ॥

आपि मरै मारे भी आपि ॥

Âapi marai maare bhee âapi ||

He Himself dies, and He Himself kills.

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥

आपि उपाए थापि उथापि ॥

Âapi ūpaaē ŧhaapi ūŧhaapi ||

He Himself establishes, and having established, disestablishes.

ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਤੂ ਜਾਤਿ ॥

स्रिसटि उपाई जोती तू जाति ॥

Srisati ūpaaëe joŧee ŧoo jaaŧi ||

He created the Universe, and by His Divine Nature, instilled His Divine Light into it.

ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ॥੭॥

सबदु वीचारि मिलणु नही भ्राति ॥७॥

Sabađu veechaari milañu nahee bhraaŧi ||7||

One who reflects upon the Word of the Shabad, meets the Lord, without doubt. ||7||


ਸੂਤਕੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

सूतकु अगनि भखै जगु खाइ ॥

Sooŧaku âgani bhakhai jagu khaaī ||

Pollution is the burning fire, which is consuming the world.

ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਥਾਇ ॥

सूतकु जलि थलि सभ ही थाइ ॥

Sooŧaku jali ŧhali sabh hee ŧhaaī ||

Pollution is in the water, upon the land, and everywhere.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਤਕਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥

नानक सूतकि जनमि मरीजै ॥

Naanak sooŧaki janami mareejai ||

O Nanak, people are born and die in pollution.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੪॥

गुर परसादी हरि रसु पीजै ॥८॥४॥

Gur parasaađee hari rasu peejai ||8||4||

By Guru's Grace, they drink in the Lord's sublime elixir. ||8||4||


ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raagu âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥

आपु वीचारै सु परखे हीरा ॥

Âapu veechaarai su parakhe heeraa ||

One who contemplates his own self, tests the worth of the jewel.

ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

एक द्रिसटि तारे गुर पूरा ॥

Ēk đrisati ŧaare gur pooraa ||

With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him.

ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥

गुरु मानै मन ते मनु धीरा ॥१॥

Guru maanai man ŧe manu đheeraa ||1||

When the Guru is pleased, one's mind comforts itself. ||1||


ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥

ऐसा साहु सराफी करै ॥

Âisaa saahu saraaphee karai ||

He is such a banker, who tests us.

ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साची नदरि एक लिव तरै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saachee nađari ēk liv ŧarai ||1|| rahaaū ||

By His True Glance of Grace, we are blessed with the Love of the One Lord, and are saved. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

पूंजी नामु निरंजन सारु ॥

Poonjjee naamu niranjjan saaru ||

The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥

निरमलु साचि रता पैकारु ॥

Niramalu saachi raŧaa paikaaru ||

That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth.

ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

सिफति सहज घरि गुरु करतारु ॥२॥

Siphaŧi sahaj ghari guru karaŧaaru ||2||

Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2||


ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥

आसा मनसा सबदि जलाए ॥

Âasaa manasaa sabađi jalaaē ||

One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad,

ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥

राम नराइणु कहै कहाए ॥

Raam naraaīñu kahai kahaaē ||

Chants the Lord's Name, and inspires others to chant it as well.

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

गुर ते वाट महलु घरु पाए ॥३॥

Gur ŧe vaat mahalu gharu paaē ||3||

Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||3||


ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥

कंचन काइआ जोति अनूपु ॥

Kancchan kaaīâa joŧi ânoopu ||

His body becomes golden, by the Lord's Incomparable Light.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥

त्रिभवण देवा सगल सरूपु ॥

Ŧribhavañ đevaa sagal saroopu ||

He beholds the divine beauty in all the three worlds.

ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥

मै सो धनु पलै साचु अखूटु ॥४॥

Mai so đhanu palai saachu âkhootu ||4||

That inexhaustible wealth of Truth is now in my lap. ||4||


ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

पंच तीनि नव चारि समावै ॥

Pancch ŧeeni nav chaari samaavai ||

In the five elements, the three worlds, the nine regions and the four directions, the Lord is pervading.

ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥

धरणि गगनु कल धारि रहावै ॥

Đharañi gaganu kal đhaari rahaavai ||

He supports the earth and the sky, exercising His almighty power.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥

बाहरि जातउ उलटि परावै ॥५॥

Baahari jaaŧaū ūlati paraavai ||5||

He turns the outgoing mind around. ||5||


ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

मूरखु होइ न आखी सूझै ॥

Moorakhu hoī na âakhee soojhai ||

The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes.

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

जिहवा रसु नही कहिआ बूझै ॥

Jihavaa rasu nahee kahiâa boojhai ||

He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said.

ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥

बिखु का माता जग सिउ लूझै ॥६॥

Bikhu kaa maaŧaa jag siū loojhai ||6||

Intoxicated with poison, he argues with the world. ||6||


ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

ऊतम संगति ऊतमु होवै ॥

Ǖŧam sanggaŧi ǖŧamu hovai ||

In the uplifting society, one is uplifted.

ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

गुण कउ धावै अवगण धोवै ॥

Guñ kaū đhaavai âvagañ đhovai ||

He chases after virtue and washes off his sins.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥

बिनु गुर सेवे सहजु न होवै ॥७॥

Binu gur seve sahaju na hovai ||7||

Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7||


ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥

हीरा नामु जवेहर लालु ॥

Heeraa naamu javehar laalu ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a diamond, a jewel, a ruby.

ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥

मनु मोती है तिस का मालु ॥

Manu moŧee hai ŧis kaa maalu ||

The pearl of the mind is the inner wealth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੮॥੫॥

नानक परखै नदरि निहालु ॥८॥५॥

Naanak parakhai nađari nihaalu ||8||5||

O Nanak, the Lord tests us, and blesses us with His Glance of Grace. ||8||5||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

गुरमुखि गिआनु धिआनु मनि मानु ॥

Guramukhi giâanu đhiâanu mani maanu ||

The Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom, meditation and satisfaction of the mind.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥

गुरमुखि महली महलु पछानु ॥

Guramukhi mahalee mahalu pachhaanu ||

The Gurmukh realizes the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि सुरति सबदु नीसानु ॥१॥

Guramukhi suraŧi sabađu neesaanu ||1||

The Gurmukh is attuned to the Word of the Shabad, as his Insignia. ||1||


ਐਸੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

ऐसे प्रेम भगति वीचारी ॥

Âise prem bhagaŧi veechaaree ||

Such is the loving devotional worship of the Lord's contemplation.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि साचा नामु मुरारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi saachaa naamu muraaree ||1|| rahaaū ||

The Gurmukh realizes the True Name, the Destroyer of ego. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਥਾਨੁ ॥

अहिनिसि निरमलु थानि सुथानु ॥

Âhinisi niramalu ŧhaani suŧhaanu ||

Day and night, he remains immaculately pure, and abides in the sublime place.

ਤੀਨ ਭਵਨ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

तीन भवन निहकेवल गिआनु ॥

Ŧeen bhavan nihakeval giâanu ||

He gains the wisdom of the three worlds.

ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥੨॥

साचे गुर ते हुकमु पछानु ॥२॥

Saache gur ŧe hukamu pachhaanu ||2||

Through the True Guru, the Command of the Lord's Will is realized. ||2||


ਸਾਚਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

साचा हरखु नाही तिसु सोगु ॥

Saachaa harakhu naahee ŧisu sogu ||

He enjoys true pleasure, and suffers no pain.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥

अम्रितु गिआनु महा रसु भोगु ॥

Âmmmriŧu giâanu mahaa rasu bhogu ||

He enjoys the ambrosial wisdom, and the highest sublime essence.

ਪੰਚ ਸਮਾਈ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੩॥

पंच समाई सुखी सभु लोगु ॥३॥

Pancch samaaëe sukhee sabhu logu ||3||

He overcomes the five evil passions, and becomes the happiest of all men. ||3||


ਸਗਲੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

सगली जोति तेरा सभु कोई ॥

Sagalee joŧi ŧeraa sabhu koëe ||

Your Divine Light is contained in all; everyone belongs to You.

ਆਪੇ ਜੋੜਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਸੋਈ ॥

आपे जोड़ि विछोड़े सोई ॥

Âape joɍi vichhoɍe soëe ||

You Yourself join and separate again.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥

आपे करता करे सु होई ॥४॥

Âape karaŧaa kare su hoëe ||4||

Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||4||


ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

ढाहि उसारे हुकमि समावै ॥

Dhaahi ūsaare hukami samaavai ||

He demolishes, and He builds; by His Order, he merges us into Himself.

ਹੁਕਮੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

हुकमो वरतै जो तिसु भावै ॥

Hukamo varaŧai jo ŧisu bhaavai ||

Whatever is pleasing to His Will, happens.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥

गुर बिनु पूरा कोइ न पावै ॥५॥

Gur binu pooraa koī na paavai ||5||

Without the Guru, no one obtains the Perfect Lord. ||5||


ਬਾਲਕ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਨ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰਾਨਿ ॥

बालक बिरधि न सुरति परानि ॥

Baalak birađhi na suraŧi paraani ||

In childhood and old age, he does not understand.

ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਬੂਡੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਿ ॥

भरि जोबनि बूडै अभिमानि ॥

Bhari jobani boodai âbhimaani ||

In the prime of youth, he is drowned in his pride.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਲਹਸਿ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੬॥

बिनु नावै किआ लहसि निदानि ॥६॥

Binu naavai kiâa lahasi niđaani ||6||

Without the Name, what can the fool obtain? ||6||


ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥

जिस का अनु धनु सहजि न जाना ॥

Jis kaa ânu đhanu sahaji na jaanaa ||

He does not know the One who blesses him with nourishment and wealth.

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥

भरमि भुलाना फिरि पछुताना ॥

Bharami bhulaanaa phiri pachhuŧaanaa ||

Deluded by doubt, he later regrets and repents.

ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਬਉਰਾ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥੭॥

गलि फाही बउरा बउराना ॥७॥

Gali phaahee baūraa baūraanaa ||7||

The noose of death is around the neck of that crazy madman. ||7||


ਬੂਡਤ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤਉ ਡਰਿ ਭਾਗੇ ॥

बूडत जगु देखिआ तउ डरि भागे ॥

Boodaŧ jagu đekhiâa ŧaū dari bhaage ||

I saw the world drowning, and I ran away in fear.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੇ ॥

सतिगुरि राखे से वडभागे ॥

Saŧiguri raakhe se vadabhaage ||

How very fortunate are those who have been saved by the True Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥੮॥੬॥

नानक गुर की चरणी लागे ॥८॥६॥

Naanak gur kee charañee laage ||8||6||

O Nanak, they are attached to the feet of the Guru. ||8||6||

They sing religious songs, but their consciousness is wicked.

ਰਾਗ ਸੁਣਾਇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਬੀਤੇ ॥

राग सुणाइ कहावहि बीते ॥

Raag suñaaī kahaavahi beeŧe ||

They sing the songs, and call themselves divine,

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਅਨੀਤੇ ॥੧॥

बिनु नावै मनि झूठु अनीते ॥१॥

Binu naavai mani jhoothu âneeŧe ||1||

But without the Name, their minds are false and wicked. ||1||


ਕਹਾ ਚਲਹੁ ਮਨ ਰਹਹੁ ਘਰੇ ॥

कहा चलहु मन रहहु घरे ॥

Kahaa chalahu man rahahu ghare ||

Where are you going? O mind, remain in your own home.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੇ ਖੋਜਤ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि राम नामि त्रिपतासे खोजत पावहु सहजि हरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi raam naami ŧripaŧaase khojaŧ paavahu sahaji hare ||1|| rahaaū ||

The Gurmukhs are satisfied with the Lord's Name; searching, they easily find the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥

कामु क्रोधु मनि मोहु सरीरा ॥

Kaamu krođhu mani mohu sareeraa ||

Sexual desire, anger and emotional attachment fill the mind and body;

ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਸੁ ਪੀਰਾ ॥

लबु लोभु अहंकारु सु पीरा ॥

Labu lobhu âhankkaaru su peeraa ||

Greed and egotism lead only to pain.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੨॥

राम नाम बिनु किउ मनु धीरा ॥२॥

Raam naam binu kiū manu đheeraa ||2||

How can the mind be comforted without the Lord's Name? ||2||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

अंतरि नावणु साचु पछाणै ॥

Ânŧŧari naavañu saachu pachhaañai ||

One who cleanses himself within, knows the True Lord.

ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

अंतर की गति गुरमुखि जाणै ॥

Ânŧŧar kee gaŧi guramukhi jaañai ||

The Gurmukh knows the condition of his innermost being.

ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

साच सबद बिनु महलु न पछाणै ॥३॥

Saach sabađ binu mahalu na pachhaañai ||3||

Without the True Word of the Shabad, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is not realized. ||3||


ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

निरंकार महि आकारु समावै ॥

Nirankkaar mahi âakaaru samaavai ||

One who merges his form into the Formless Lord,

ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਟਿਕਾਵੈ ॥

अकल कला सचु साचि टिकावै ॥

Âkal kalaa sachu saachi tikaavai ||

Abides in the True Lord, the Powerful, beyond power.

ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥

सो नरु गरभ जोनि नही आवै ॥४॥

So naru garabh joni nahee âavai ||4||

Such a person does not enter into the womb of reincarnation again. ||4||


ਜਹਾਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਹ ਜਾਉ ॥

जहां नामु मिलै तह जाउ ॥

Jahaan naamu milai ŧah jaaū ||

Go there, where you may obtain the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादी करम कमाउ ॥

Gur parasaađee karam kamaaū ||

By Guru's Grace, perform good deeds.

ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੫॥

नामे राता हरि गुण गाउ ॥५॥

Naame raaŧaa hari guñ gaaū ||5||

Imbued with the Naam, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||


ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥

गुर सेवा ते आपु पछाता ॥

Gur sevaa ŧe âapu pachhaaŧaa ||

Serving the Guru, I have come to understand myself.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥

अम्रित नामु वसिआ सुखदाता ॥

Âmmmriŧ naamu vasiâa sukhađaaŧaa ||

The Ambrosial Naam, the Giver of Peace, abides within my mind.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੬॥

अनदिनु बाणी नामे राता ॥६॥

Ânađinu baañee naame raaŧaa ||6||

Night and day, I am imbued with the Word of the Guru's Bani, and the Naam. ||6||


ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਏ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

मेरा प्रभु लाए ता को लागै ॥

Meraa prbhu laaē ŧaa ko laagai ||

When my God attaches someone to Him, only then is that person attached.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਬਦੇ ਜਾਗੈ ॥

हउमै मारे सबदे जागै ॥

Haūmai maare sabađe jaagai ||

Conquering ego, he remains awake to the Word of the Shabad.

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੭॥

ऐथै ओथै सदा सुखु आगै ॥७॥

Âiŧhai õŧhai sađaa sukhu âagai ||7||

Here and hereafter, he enjoys lasting peace. ||7||


ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

मनु चंचलु बिधि नाही जाणै ॥

Manu chancchalu biđhi naahee jaañai ||

The fickle mind does not know the way.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

मनमुखि मैला सबदु न पछाणै ॥

Manamukhi mailaa sabađu na pachhaañai ||

The filthy self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥੮॥

गुरमुखि निरमलु नामु वखाणै ॥८॥

Guramukhi niramalu naamu vakhaañai ||8||

The Gurmukh chants the Immaculate Naam. ||8||


ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

हरि जीउ आगै करी अरदासि ॥

Hari jeeū âagai karee ârađaasi ||

I offer my prayer to the Lord,

ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥

साधू जन संगति होइ निवासु ॥

Saađhoo jan sanggaŧi hoī nivaasu ||

That I might dwell in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੯॥

किलविख दुख काटे हरि नामु प्रगासु ॥९॥

Kilavikh đukh kaate hari naamu prgaasu ||9||

There, sins and sufferings are erased, and one is illumined with the Lord's Name. ||9||


ਕਰਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥

करि बीचारु आचारु पराता ॥

Kari beechaaru âachaaru paraaŧaa ||

In reflective meditation, I have come to love good conduct.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

सतिगुर बचनी एको जाता ॥

Saŧigur bachanee ēko jaaŧaa ||

Through the Word of the True Guru, I recognize the One Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧੦॥੭॥

नानक राम नामि मनु राता ॥१०॥७॥

Naanak raam naami manu raaŧaa ||10||7||

O Nanak, my mind is imbued with the Lord's Name. ||10||7||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥

मनु मैगलु साकतु देवाना ॥

Manu maigalu saakaŧu đevaanaa ||

The mind of the faithless cynic is like a crazy elephant.

ਬਨ ਖੰਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨਾ ॥

बन खंडि माइआ मोहि हैराना ॥

Ban khanddi maaīâa mohi hairaanaa ||

It wanders around the forest, distracted by attachment to Maya.

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਾਲ ਕੇ ਚਾਪੇ ॥

इत उत जाहि काल के चापे ॥

Īŧ ūŧ jaahi kaal ke chaape ||

It goes here and there, hounded by death.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि खोजि लहै घरु आपे ॥१॥

Guramukhi khoji lahai gharu âape ||1||

The Gurmukh seeks, and finds his own home. ||1||


ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਠਉਰਾ ॥

बिनु गुर सबदै मनु नही ठउरा ॥

Binu gur sabađai manu nahee thaūraa ||

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mind finds no place of rest.

ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सिमरहु राम नामु अति निरमलु अवर तिआगहु हउमै कउरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Simarahu raam naamu âŧi niramalu âvar ŧiâagahu haūmai kaūraa ||1|| rahaaū ||

Remember in meditation the Lord's Name, the most pure and sublime; renounce your bitter egotism. ||1|| Pause ||


ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹਸੀ ॥

इहु मनु मुगधु कहहु किउ रहसी ॥

Īhu manu mugađhu kahahu kiū rahasee ||

Tell me, how can this stupid mind be rescued?

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹਸੀ ॥

बिनु समझे जम का दुखु सहसी ॥

Binu samajhe jam kaa đukhu sahasee ||

Without understanding, it shall suffer the pains of death.

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ॥

आपे बखसे सतिगुरु मेलै ॥

Âape bakhase saŧiguru melai ||

The Lord Himself forgives us, and unites us with the True Guru.

ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪੇਲੈ ॥੨॥

कालु कंटकु मारे सचु पेलै ॥२॥

Kaalu kanttaku maare sachu pelai ||2||

The True Lord conquers and overcomes the tortures of death. ||2||


ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥

इहु मनु करमा इहु मनु धरमा ॥

Īhu manu karamaa īhu manu đharamaa ||

This mind commits its deeds of karma, and this mind follows the Dharma.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਤੇ ਜਨਮਾ ॥

इहु मनु पंच ततु ते जनमा ॥

Īhu manu pancch ŧaŧu ŧe janamaa ||

This mind is born of the five elements.

ਸਾਕਤੁ ਲੋਭੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੂੜਾ ॥

साकतु लोभी इहु मनु मूड़ा ॥

Saakaŧu lobhee īhu manu mooɍaa ||

This foolish mind is perverted and greedy.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨੁ ਰੂੜਾ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि नामु जपै मनु रूड़ा ॥३॥

Guramukhi naamu japai manu rooɍaa ||3||

Chanting the Naam, the mind of the Gurmukh becomes beautiful. ||3||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੇ ਸੋਈ ॥

गुरमुखि मनु असथाने सोई ॥

Guramukhi manu âsaŧhaane soëe ||

The mind of the Gurmukh finds the Lord's home.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

गुरमुखि त्रिभवणि सोझी होई ॥

Guramukhi ŧribhavañi sojhee hoëe ||

The Gurmukh comes to know the three worlds.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪੈ ॥

इहु मनु जोगी भोगी तपु तापै ॥

Īhu manu jogee bhogee ŧapu ŧaapai ||

This mind is a Yogi, an enjoyer, a practicer of austerities.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੀਨੑੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੈ ॥੪॥

गुरमुखि चीन्है हरि प्रभु आपै ॥४॥

Guramukhi cheenʱai hari prbhu âapai ||4||

The Gurmukh understands the Lord God Himself. ||4||


ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥

मनु बैरागी हउमै तिआगी ॥

Manu bairaagee haūmai ŧiâagee ||

This mind is a detached renunciate, forsaking egotism.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੀ ॥

घटि घटि मनसा दुबिधा लागी ॥

Ghati ghati manasaa đubiđhaa laagee ||

Desire and duality afflict each and every heart.

ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਖੈ ॥

राम रसाइणु गुरमुखि चाखै ॥

Raam rasaaīñu guramukhi chaakhai ||

The Gurmukh drinks in the Lord's sublime essence;

ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥੫॥

दरि घरि महली हरि पति राखै ॥५॥

Đari ghari mahalee hari paŧi raakhai ||5||

At His Door, in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, He preserves his honor. ||5||


ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਾਮਿ ॥

इहु मनु राजा सूर संग्रामि ॥

Īhu manu raajaa soor sanggraami ||

This mind is the king, the hero of cosmic battles.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ॥

इहु मनु निरभउ गुरमुखि नामि ॥

Īhu manu nirabhaū guramukhi naami ||

The mind of the Gurmukh becomes fearless through the Naam.

ਮਾਰੇ ਪੰਚ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਏ ॥

मारे पंच अपुनै वसि कीए ॥

Maare pancch âpunai vasi keeē ||

Overpowering and subduing the five passions,

ਹਉਮੈ ਗ੍ਰਾਸਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਥਾਇ ਕੀਏ ॥੬॥

हउमै ग्रासि इकतु थाइ कीए ॥६॥

Haūmai graasi īkaŧu ŧhaaī keeē ||6||

Holding ego in its grip, it confines them to one place. ||6||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਸੁਆਦ ਅਨ ਤਿਆਗੇ ॥

गुरमुखि राग सुआद अन तिआगे ॥

Guramukhi raag suâađ ân ŧiâage ||

The Gurmukh renounces other songs and tastes.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਾਗੇ ॥

गुरमुखि इहु मनु भगती जागे ॥

Guramukhi īhu manu bhagaŧee jaage ||

The mind of the Gurmukh is awakened to devotion.

ਅਨਹਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

अनहद सुणि मानिआ सबदु वीचारी ॥

Ânahađ suñi maaniâa sabađu veechaaree ||

Hearing the unstruck music of the sound current, this mind contemplates the Shabad, and accepts it.

ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੑਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੭॥

आतमु चीन्हि भए निरंकारी ॥७॥

Âaŧamu cheenʱi bhaē nirankkaaree ||7||

Understanding itself, this soul becomes attuned to the Formless Lord. ||7||


ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

इहु मनु निरमलु दरि घरि सोई ॥

Īhu manu niramalu đari ghari soëe ||

This mind becomes immaculately pure, in the Court and the Home of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

गुरमुखि भगति भाउ धुनि होई ॥

Guramukhi bhagaŧi bhaaū đhuni hoëe ||

The Gurmukh shows his love through loving devotional worship.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

अहिनिसि हरि जसु गुर परसादि ॥

Âhinisi hari jasu gur parasaađi ||

Night and day, by Guru's Grace, sing the Lord's Praises.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ॥੮॥

घटि घटि सो प्रभु आदि जुगादि ॥८॥

Ghati ghati so prbhu âađi jugaađi ||8||

God dwells in each and every heart, since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages. ||8||


ਰਾਮ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥

राम रसाइणि इहु मनु माता ॥

Raam rasaaīñi īhu manu maaŧaa ||

This mind is intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord;

ਸਰਬ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

सरब रसाइणु गुरमुखि जाता ॥

Sarab rasaaīñu guramukhi jaaŧaa ||

The Gurmukh realizes the essence of totality.

ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥

भगति हेतु गुर चरण निवासा ॥

Bhagaŧi heŧu gur charañ nivaasaa ||

For the sake of devotional worship, he dwells at the Guru's Feet.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੯॥੮॥

नानक हरि जन के दासनि दासा ॥९॥८॥

Naanak hari jan ke đaasani đaasaa ||9||8||

Nanak is the humble servant of the slave of the Lord's slaves. ||9||8||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਤਨੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਧਨੁ ਕਾ ਕੋ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

तनु बिनसै धनु का को कहीऐ ॥

Ŧanu binasai đhanu kaa ko kaheeâi ||

When the body perishes, whose wealth is it?

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਤ ਲਹੀਐ ॥

बिनु गुर राम नामु कत लहीऐ ॥

Binu gur raam naamu kaŧ laheeâi ||

Without the Guru, how can the Lord's Name be obtained?

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

राम नाम धनु संगि सखाई ॥

Raam naam đhanu sanggi sakhaaëe ||

The wealth of the Lord's Name is my Companion and Helper.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੧॥

अहिनिसि निरमलु हरि लिव लाई ॥१॥

Âhinisi niramalu hari liv laaëe ||1||

Night and day, center your loving attention on the Immaculate Lord. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥

राम नाम बिनु कवनु हमारा ॥

Raam naam binu kavanu hamaaraa ||

Without the Lord's Name, who is ours?

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਉ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सुख दुख सम करि नामु न छोडउ आपे बखसि मिलावणहारा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sukh đukh sam kari naamu na chhodaū âape bakhasi milaavañahaaraa ||1|| rahaaū ||

I look upon pleasure and pain alike; I shall not forsake the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord Himself forgives me, and blends me with Himself. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਹੇਤੁ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥

कनिक कामनी हेतु गवारा ॥

Kanik kaamanee heŧu gavaaraa ||

The fool loves gold and women.

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥

दुबिधा लागे नामु विसारा ॥

Đubiđhaa laage naamu visaaraa ||

Attached to duality, he has forgotten the Naam.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਇ ॥

जिसु तूं बखसहि नामु जपाइ ॥

Jisu ŧoonn bakhasahi naamu japaaī ||

O Lord, he alone chants the Naam, whom You have forgiven.

ਦੂਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਸਕੈ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥

दूतु न लागि सकै गुन गाइ ॥२॥

Đooŧu na laagi sakai gun gaaī ||2||

Death cannot touch one who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਪਾਲਾ ॥

हरि गुरु दाता राम गुपाला ॥

Hari guru đaaŧaa raam gupaalaa ||

The Lord, the Guru, is the Giver; the Lord, the Sustainer of the World.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखु दइआला ॥

Jiū bhaavai ŧiū raakhu đaīâalaa ||

If it is pleasing to Your Will, please preserve me, O Merciful Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

गुरमुखि रामु मेरै मनि भाइआ ॥

Guramukhi raamu merai mani bhaaīâa ||

As Gurmukh, my mind is pleased with the Lord.

ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

रोग मिटे दुखु ठाकि रहाइआ ॥३॥

Rog mite đukhu thaaki rahaaīâa ||3||

My diseases are cured, and my pains are taken away. ||3||


ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਤੰਤ ਨ ਮੰਤਾ ॥

अवरु न अउखधु तंत न मंता ॥

Âvaru na âūkhađhu ŧanŧŧ na manŧŧaa ||

There is no other medicine, Tantric charm or mantra.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਣੁ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਹੰਤਾ ॥

हरि हरि सिमरणु किलविख हंता ॥

Hari hari simarañu kilavikh hanŧŧaa ||

Meditative remembrance upon the Lord, Har, Har, destroys sins.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥

तूं आपि भुलावहि नामु विसारि ॥

Ŧoonn âapi bhulaavahi naamu visaari ||

You Yourself cause us to stray from the path, and forget the Naam.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

तूं आपे राखहि किरपा धारि ॥४॥

Ŧoonn âape raakhahi kirapaa đhaari ||4||

Showering Your Mercy, You Yourself save us. ||4||


ਰੋਗੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਦੂਜਾ ॥

रोगु भरमु भेदु मनि दूजा ॥

Rogu bharamu bheđu mani đoojaa ||

The mind is diseased with doubt, superstition and duality.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਜਪਹਿ ਜਪੁ ਦੂਜਾ ॥

गुर बिनु भरमि जपहि जपु दूजा ॥

Gur binu bharami japahi japu đoojaa ||

Without the Guru, it dwells in doubt, and contemplates duality.

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸ ਨ ਦੇਖਹਿ ॥

आदि पुरख गुर दरस न देखहि ॥

Âađi purakh gur đaras na đekhahi ||

The Guru reveals the Darshan, the Blessed Vision of the Primal Lord.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਕਿ ਲੇਖਹਿ ॥੫॥

विणु गुर सबदै जनमु कि लेखहि ॥५॥

Viñu gur sabađai janamu ki lekhahi ||5||

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, what use is human life? ||5||


ਦੇਖਿ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦਿ ॥

देखि अचरजु रहे बिसमादि ॥

Đekhi âcharaju rahe bisamaađi ||

Beholding the marvelous Lord, I am wonder-struck and astonished.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਸਹਜ ਸਮਾਧਿ ॥

घटि घटि सुर नर सहज समाधि ॥

Ghati ghati sur nar sahaj samaađhi ||

In each and every heart, of the angels and holy men, He dwells in celestial Samaadhi.

ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

भरिपुरि धारि रहे मन माही ॥

Bharipuri đhaari rahe man maahee ||

I have enshrined the All-pervading Lord within my mind.

ਤੁਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥

तुम समसरि अवरु को नाही ॥६॥

Ŧum samasari âvaru ko naahee ||6||

There is no one else equal to You. ||6||


ਜਾ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

जा की भगति हेतु मुखि नामु ॥

Jaa kee bhagaŧi heŧu mukhi naamu ||

For the sake of devotional worship, we chant Your Name.

ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ॥

संत भगत की संगति रामु ॥

Sanŧŧ bhagaŧ kee sanggaŧi raamu ||

The Lord's devotees dwell in the Society of the Saints.

ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਰੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

बंधन तोरे सहजि धिआनु ॥

Banđđhan ŧore sahaji đhiâanu ||

Breaking his bonds, one comes to meditate on the Lord.

ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੭॥

छूटै गुरमुखि हरि गुर गिआनु ॥७॥

Chhootai guramukhi hari gur giâanu ||7||

The Gurmukhs are emancipated, by the Guru-given knowledge of the Lord. ||7||


ਨਾ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਦੂਖੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

ना जमदूत दूखु तिसु लागै ॥

Naa jamađooŧ đookhu ŧisu laagai ||

The Messenger of Death cannot touch him with pain;

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਜਾਗੈ ॥

जो जनु राम नामि लिव जागै ॥

Jo janu raam naami liv jaagai ||

The Lord's humble servant remains awake to the Love of the Naam.

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਭਗਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

भगति वछलु भगता हरि संगि ॥

Bhagaŧi vachhalu bhagaŧaa hari sanggi ||

The Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He dwells with His devotees.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੮॥੯॥

नानक मुकति भए हरि रंगि ॥८॥९॥

Naanak mukaŧi bhaē hari ranggi ||8||9||

O Nanak, they are liberated, through the Love of the Lord. ||8||9||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਇਕਤੁਕੀ ॥

आसा महला १ इकतुकी ॥

Âasaa mahalaa 1 īkaŧukee ||

Aasaa, First Mehl, Ik-Tukee:

ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

गुरु सेवे सो ठाकुर जानै ॥

Guru seve so thaakur jaanai ||

One who serves the Guru, knows his Lord and Master.

ਦੂਖੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੧॥

दूखु मिटै सचु सबदि पछानै ॥१॥

Đookhu mitai sachu sabađi pachhaanai ||1||

His pains are erased, and he realizes the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||


ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਖੀ ਸਖੈਨੀ ॥

रामु जपहु मेरी सखी सखैनी ॥

Raamu japahu meree sakhee sakhainee ||

Meditate on the Lord, O my friends and companions.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨੈਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सतिगुरु सेवि देखहु प्रभु नैनी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saŧiguru sevi đekhahu prbhu nainee ||1|| rahaaū ||

Serving the True Guru, you shall behold God with your eyes. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬੰਧਨ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

बंधन मात पिता संसारि ॥

Banđđhan maaŧ piŧaa sanssaari ||

People are entangled with mother, father and the world.

ਬੰਧਨ ਸੁਤ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਅਰੁ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

बंधन सुत कंनिआ अरु नारि ॥२॥

Banđđhan suŧ kanniâa âru naari ||2||

They are entangled with sons, daughters and spouses. ||2||


ਬੰਧਨ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਹਉ ਕੀਆ ॥

बंधन करम धरम हउ कीआ ॥

Banđđhan karam đharam haū keeâa ||

They are entangled with religious rituals, and religious faith, acting in ego.

ਬੰਧਨ ਪੁਤੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਬੀਆ ॥੩॥

बंधन पुतु कलतु मनि बीआ ॥३॥

Banđđhan puŧu kalaŧu mani beeâa ||3||

They are entangled with sons, wives and others in their minds. ||3||


ਬੰਧਨ ਕਿਰਖੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਰਸਾਨ ॥

बंधन किरखी करहि किरसान ॥

Banđđhan kirakhee karahi kirasaan ||

The farmers are entangled by farming.

ਹਉਮੈ ਡੰਨੁ ਸਹੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨ ॥੪॥

हउमै डंनु सहै राजा मंगै दान ॥४॥

Haūmai dannu sahai raajaa manggai đaan ||4||

People suffer punishment in ego, and the Lord King exacts the penalty from them. ||4||


ਬੰਧਨ ਸਉਦਾ ਅਣਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

बंधन सउदा अणवीचारी ॥

Banđđhan saūđaa âñaveechaaree ||

They are entangled in trade without contemplation.

ਤਿਪਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੫॥

तिपति नाही माइआ मोह पसारी ॥५॥

Ŧipaŧi naahee maaīâa moh pasaaree ||5||

They are not satisfied by attachment to the expanse of Maya. ||5||


ਬੰਧਨ ਸਾਹ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

बंधन साह संचहि धनु जाइ ॥

Banđđhan saah sancchahi đhanu jaaī ||

They are entangled with that wealth, amassed by bankers.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥੬॥

बिनु हरि भगति न पवई थाइ ॥६॥

Binu hari bhagaŧi na pavaëe ŧhaaī ||6||

Without devotion to the Lord, they do not become acceptable. ||6||


ਬੰਧਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥

बंधन बेदु बादु अहंकार ॥

Banđđhan beđu baađu âhankkaar ||

They are entangled with the Vedas, religious discussions and egotism.

ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੭॥

बंधनि बिनसै मोह विकार ॥७॥

Banđđhani binasai moh vikaar ||7||

They are entangled, and perish in attachment and corruption. ||7||


ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥

नानक राम नाम सरणाई ॥

Naanak raam naam sarañaaëe ||

Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Lord's Name.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੮॥੧੦॥

सतिगुरि राखे बंधु न पाई ॥८॥१०॥

Saŧiguri raakhe banđđhu na paaëe ||8||10||

One who is saved by the True Guru, does not suffer entanglement. ||8||10||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਿਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪਟੀਆ ਮਾਂਗੀ ਪਾਇ ਸੰਧੂਰੁ ॥

जिन सिरि सोहनि पटीआ मांगी पाइ संधूरु ॥

Jin siri sohani pateeâa maangee paaī sanđđhooru ||

Those heads adorned with braided hair, with their parts painted with vermillion

ਸੇ ਸਿਰ ਕਾਤੀ ਮੁੰਨੀਅਨੑਿ ਗਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਵੈ ਧੂੜਿ ॥

से सिर काती मुंनीअन्हि गल विचि आवै धूड़ि ॥

Se sir kaaŧee munneeânʱi gal vichi âavai đhooɍi ||

Those heads were shaved with scissors, and their throats were choked with dust.

ਮਹਲਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਦੀਆ ਹੁਣਿ ਬਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲਨੑਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥

महला अंदरि होदीआ हुणि बहणि न मिलन्हि हदूरि ॥१॥

Mahalaa ânđđari hođeeâa huñi bahañi na milanʱi hađoori ||1||

They lived in palatial mansions, but now, they cannot even sit near the palaces. ||1||


ਆਦੇਸੁ ਬਾਬਾ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

आदेसु बाबा आदेसु ॥

Âađesu baabaa âađesu ||

Hail to You, O Father Lord, Hail to You!

ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਵੇਸ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

आदि पुरख तेरा अंतु न पाइआ करि करि देखहि वेस ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Âađi purakh ŧeraa ânŧŧu na paaīâa kari kari đekhahi ves ||1|| rahaaū ||

O Primal Lord. Your limits are not known; You create, and create, and behold the scenes. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਦਹੁ ਸੀਆ ਵੀਆਹੀਆ ਲਾੜੇ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

जदहु सीआ वीआहीआ लाड़े सोहनि पासि ॥

Jađahu seeâa veeâaheeâa laaɍe sohani paasi ||

When they were married, their husbands looked so handsome beside them.

ਹੀਡੋਲੀ ਚੜਿ ਆਈਆ ਦੰਦ ਖੰਡ ਕੀਤੇ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

हीडोली चड़ि आईआ दंद खंड कीते रासि ॥

Heedolee chaɍi âaëeâa đanđđ khandd keeŧe raasi ||

They came in palanquins, decorated with ivory;

ਉਪਰਹੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਰੀਐ ਝਲੇ ਝਿਮਕਨਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥

उपरहु पाणी वारीऐ झले झिमकनि पासि ॥२॥

Ūparahu paañee vaareeâi jhale jhimakani paasi ||2||

Water was sprinkled over their heads, and glittering fans were waved above them. ||2||


ਇਕੁ ਲਖੁ ਲਹਨੑਿ ਬਹਿਠੀਆ ਲਖੁ ਲਹਨੑਿ ਖੜੀਆ ॥

इकु लखु लहन्हि बहिठीआ लखु लहन्हि खड़ीआ ॥

Īku lakhu lahanʱi bahitheeâa lakhu lahanʱi khaɍeeâa ||

They were given hundreds of thousands of coins when they sat, and hundreds of thousands of coins when they stood.

ਗਰੀ ਛੁਹਾਰੇ ਖਾਂਦੀਆ ਮਾਣਨੑਿ ਸੇਜੜੀਆ ॥

गरी छुहारे खांदीआ माणन्हि सेजड़ीआ ॥

Garee chhuhaare khaanđeeâa maañanʱi sejaɍeeâa ||

They ate coconuts and dates, and rested comfortably upon their beds.

ਤਿਨੑ ਗਲਿ ਸਿਲਕਾ ਪਾਈਆ ਤੁਟਨੑਿ ਮੋਤਸਰੀਆ ॥੩॥

तिन्ह गलि सिलका पाईआ तुटन्हि मोतसरीआ ॥३॥

Ŧinʱ gali silakaa paaëeâa ŧutanʱi moŧasareeâa ||3||

But ropes were put around their necks, and their strings of pearls were broken. ||3||


ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਵੈਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਰਖੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

धनु जोबनु दुइ वैरी होए जिन्ही रखे रंगु लाइ ॥

Đhanu jobanu đuī vairee hoē jinʱee rakhe ranggu laaī ||

Their wealth and youthful beauty, which gave them so much pleasure, have now become their enemies.

ਦੂਤਾ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਲੈ ਚਲੇ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

दूता नो फुरमाइआ लै चले पति गवाइ ॥

Đooŧaa no phuramaaīâa lai chale paŧi gavaaī ||

The order was given to the soldiers, who dishonored them, and carried them away.

ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੪॥

जे तिसु भावै दे वडिआई जे भावै देइ सजाइ ॥४॥

Je ŧisu bhaavai đe vadiâaëe je bhaavai đeī sajaaī ||4||

If it is pleasing to God's Will, He bestows greatness; if is pleases His Will, He bestows punishment. ||4||


ਅਗੋ ਦੇ ਜੇ ਚੇਤੀਐ ਤਾਂ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

अगो दे जे चेतीऐ तां काइतु मिलै सजाइ ॥

Âgo đe je cheŧeeâi ŧaan kaaīŧu milai sajaaī ||

If someone focuses on the Lord beforehand, then why should he be punished?

ਸਾਹਾਂ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਵਾਈਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਤਮਾਸੈ ਚਾਇ ॥

साहां सुरति गवाईआ रंगि तमासै चाइ ॥

Saahaan suraŧi gavaaëeâa ranggi ŧamaasai chaaī ||

The kings had lost their higher consciousness, reveling in pleasure and sensuality.

ਬਾਬਰਵਾਣੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਗਈ ਕੁਇਰੁ ਨ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੫॥

बाबरवाणी फिरि गई कुइरु न रोटी खाइ ॥५॥

Baabaravaañee phiri gaëe kuīru na rotee khaaī ||5||

Since Baabar's rule has been proclaimed, even the princes have no food to eat. ||5||


ਇਕਨਾ ਵਖਤ ਖੁਆਈਅਹਿ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

इकना वखत खुआईअहि इकन्हा पूजा जाइ ॥

Īkanaa vakhaŧ khuâaëeâhi īkanʱaa poojaa jaaī ||

The Muslims have lost their five times of daily prayer, and the Hindus have lost their worship as well.

ਚਉਕੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀਆ ਕਿਉ ਟਿਕੇ ਕਢਹਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

चउके विणु हिंदवाणीआ किउ टिके कढहि नाइ ॥

Chaūke viñu hinđđavaañeeâa kiū tike kadhahi naaī ||

Without their sacred squares, how shall the Hindu women bathe and apply the frontal marks to their foreheads?

ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਹੁਣਿ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥

रामु न कबहू चेतिओ हुणि कहणि न मिलै खुदाइ ॥६॥

Raamu na kabahoo cheŧiõ huñi kahañi na milai khuđaaī ||6||

They never remembered their Lord as Raam, and now they cannot even chant Khudaa-i ||6||


ਇਕਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਇਕਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪੁਛਹਿ ਸੁਖ ॥

इकि घरि आवहि आपणै इकि मिलि मिलि पुछहि सुख ॥

Īki ghari âavahi âapañai īki mili mili puchhahi sukh ||

Some have returned to their homes, and meeting their relatives, they ask about their safety.

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਏਹੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥

इकन्हा एहो लिखिआ बहि बहि रोवहि दुख ॥

Īkanʱaa ēho likhiâa bahi bahi rovahi đukh ||

For some, it is pre-ordained that they shall sit and cry out in pain.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਨੁਖ ॥੭॥੧੧॥

जो तिसु भावै सो थीऐ नानक किआ मानुख ॥७॥११॥

Jo ŧisu bhaavai so ŧheeâi naanak kiâa maanukh ||7||11||

Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass. O Nanak, what is the fate of mankind? ||7||11||

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਖੇਲ ਤਬੇਲਾ ਘੋੜੇ ਕਹਾ ਭੇਰੀ ਸਹਨਾਈ ॥

कहा सु खेल तबेला घोड़े कहा भेरी सहनाई ॥

Kahaa su khel ŧabelaa ghoɍe kahaa bheree sahanaaëe ||

Where are the games, the stables, the horses? Where are the drums and the bugles?

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗਾਡੇਰੜਿ ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਲਾਲ ਕਵਾਈ ॥

कहा सु तेगबंद गाडेरड़ि कहा सु लाल कवाई ॥

Kahaa su ŧegabanđđ gaaderaɍi kahaa su laal kavaaëe ||

Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those scarlet uniforms?

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਆਰਸੀਆ ਮੁਹ ਬੰਕੇ ਐਥੈ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

कहा सु आरसीआ मुह बंके ऐथै दिसहि नाही ॥१॥

Kahaa su âaraseeâa muh bankke âiŧhai đisahi naahee ||1||

Where are the rings and the beautiful faces? They are no longer to be seen here. ||1||


ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਗੋਸਾਈ ॥

इहु जगु तेरा तू गोसाई ॥

Īhu jagu ŧeraa ŧoo gosaaëe ||

ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਜਰੁ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਭਾਂਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एक घड़ी महि थापि उथापे जरु वंडि देवै भांई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ēk ghaɍee mahi ŧhaapi ūŧhaape jaru vanddi đevai bhaanëe ||1|| rahaaū ||

In an instant, You establish and disestablish. You distribute wealth as it pleases You. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਘਰ ਦਰ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਹਲਾ ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਬੰਕ ਸਰਾਈ ॥

कहां सु घर दर मंडप महला कहा सु बंक सराई ॥

Kahaan su ghar đar manddap mahalaa kahaa su bankk saraaëe ||

Where are the houses, the gates, the hotels and palaces? Where are those beautiful way-stations?

ਕਹਾਂ ਸੁ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਵੇਖਿ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

कहां सु सेज सुखाली कामणि जिसु वेखि नीद न पाई ॥

Kahaan su sej sukhaalee kaamañi jisu vekhi neeđ na paaëe ||

Where are those beautiful women, reclining on their beds, whose beauty would not allow one to sleep?

ਕਹਾ ਸੁ ਪਾਨ ਤੰਬੋਲੀ ਹਰਮਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਛਾਈ ਮਾਈ ॥੨॥

कहा सु पान त्मबोली हरमा होईआ छाई माई ॥२॥

Kahaa su paan ŧambbolee haramaa hoëeâa chhaaëe maaëe ||2||

Where are those betel leaves, their sellers, and the harem? They have vanished like shadows. ||2||


ਇਸੁ ਜਰ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੁਤੀ ਇਨਿ ਜਰ ਘਣੀ ਖੁਆਈ ॥

इसु जर कारणि घणी विगुती इनि जर घणी खुआई ॥

Īsu jar kaarañi ghañee viguŧee īni jar ghañee khuâaëe ||

For the sake of this wealth, so many were ruined; because of this wealth, so many have been disgraced.

ਪਾਪਾ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

पापा बाझहु होवै नाही मुइआ साथि न जाई ॥

Paapaa baajhahu hovai naahee muīâa saaŧhi na jaaëe ||

It was not gathered without sin, and it does not go along with the dead.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਖੁਸਿ ਲਏ ਚੰਗਿਆਈ ॥੩॥

जिस नो आपि खुआए करता खुसि लए चंगिआई ॥३॥

Jis no âapi khuâaē karaŧaa khusi laē changgiâaëe ||3||

Those, whom the Creator Lord would destroy - first He strips them of virtue. ||3||


ਕੋਟੀ ਹੂ ਪੀਰ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ ਜਾ ਮੀਰੁ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਧਾਇਆ ॥

कोटी हू पीर वरजि रहाए जा मीरु सुणिआ धाइआ ॥

Kotee hoo peer varaji rahaaē jaa meeru suñiâa đhaaīâa ||

Millions of religious leaders failed to halt the invader, when they heard of the Emperor's invasion.

ਥਾਨ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਜਲੇ ਬਿਜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮੁਛਿ ਮੁਛਿ ਕੁਇਰ ਰੁਲਾਇਆ ॥

थान मुकाम जले बिज मंदर मुछि मुछि कुइर रुलाइआ ॥

Ŧhaan mukaam jale bij manđđar muchhi muchhi kuīr rulaaīâa ||

He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust.

ਕੋਈ ਮੁਗਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਆ ਅੰਧਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਰਚਾ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥

कोई मुगलु न होआ अंधा किनै न परचा लाइआ ॥४॥

Koëe mugalu na hoâa ânđđhaa kinai na parachaa laaīâa ||4||

None of the Mogals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4||


ਮੁਗਲ ਪਠਾਣਾ ਭਈ ਲੜਾਈ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ॥

मुगल पठाणा भई लड़ाई रण महि तेग वगाई ॥

Mugal pathaañaa bhaëe laɍaaëe rañ mahi ŧeg vagaaëe ||

The battle raged between the Mogals and the Pat'haans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield.

ਓਨੑੀ ਤੁਪਕ ਤਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਓਨੑੀ ਹਸਤਿ ਚਿੜਾਈ ॥

ओन्ही तुपक ताणि चलाई ओन्ही हसति चिड़ाई ॥

Õnʱee ŧupak ŧaañi chalaaëe õnʱee hasaŧi chiɍaaëe ||

They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants.

ਜਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਚੀਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਟੀ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਭਾਈ ॥੫॥

जिन्ह की चीरी दरगह पाटी तिन्हा मरणा भाई ॥५॥

Jinʱ kee cheeree đaragah paatee ŧinʱaa marañaa bhaaëe ||5||

Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord's Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5||


ਇਕ ਹਿੰਦਵਾਣੀ ਅਵਰ ਤੁਰਕਾਣੀ ਭਟਿਆਣੀ ਠਕੁਰਾਣੀ ॥

इक हिंदवाणी अवर तुरकाणी भटिआणी ठकुराणी ॥

Īk hinđđavaañee âvar ŧurakaañee bhatiâañee thakuraañee ||

The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਪੇਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਖੁਰ ਪਾਟੇ ਇਕਨੑਾ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥

इकन्हा पेरण सिर खुर पाटे इकन्हा वासु मसाणी ॥

Īkanʱaa perañ sir khur paate īkanʱaa vaasu masaañee ||

Some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground.

ਜਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਬੰਕੇ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨੑ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੬॥

जिन्ह के बंके घरी न आइआ तिन्ह किउ रैणि विहाणी ॥६॥

Jinʱ ke bankke gharee na âaīâa ŧinʱ kiū raiñi vihaañee ||6||

Their husbands did not return home - how did they pass their night? ||6||


ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਈਐ ॥

आपे करे कराए करता किस नो आखि सुणाईऐ ॥

Âape kare karaaē karaŧaa kis no âakhi suñaaëeâi ||

The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act. Unto whom should we complain?

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸ ਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥

दुखु सुखु तेरै भाणै होवै किस थै जाइ रूआईऐ ॥

Đukhu sukhu ŧerai bhaañai hovai kis ŧhai jaaī rooâaëeâi ||

Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry?

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥੧੨॥

हुकमी हुकमि चलाए विगसै नानक लिखिआ पाईऐ ॥७॥१२॥

Hukamee hukami chalaaē vigasai naanak likhiâa paaëeâi ||7||12||

The Commander issues His Command, and is pleased. O Nanak, we receive what is written in our destiny. ||7||12||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

आसा महला १ ॥

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਢੂਢੀਆ ਕੋ ਨੀਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਮੈਡਾ ॥

चारे कुंडा ढूढीआ को नीम्ही मैडा ॥

Chaare kunddaa dhoodheeâa ko neemʱee maidaa ||

I have searched in the four directions, but no one is mine.

ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਹਉ ਤੈਡਾ ॥੧॥

जे तुधु भावै साहिबा तू मै हउ तैडा ॥१॥

Je ŧuđhu bhaavai saahibaa ŧoo mai haū ŧaidaa ||1||

If it pleases You, O Lord Master, then You are mine, and I am Yours. ||1||


ਦਰੁ ਬੀਭਾ ਮੈ ਨੀਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕੋ ਕੈ ਕਰੀ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥

दरु बीभा मै नीम्हि को कै करी सलामु ॥

Đaru beebhaa mai neemʱi ko kai karee salaamu ||

There is no other door for me; where shall I go to worship?

ਹਿਕੋ ਮੈਡਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हिको मैडा तू धणी साचा मुखि नामु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hiko maidaa ŧoo đhañee saachaa mukhi naamu ||1|| rahaaū ||

You are my only Lord; Your True Name is in my mouth. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਿਧਾ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ॥

सिधा सेवनि सिध पीर मागहि रिधि सिधि ॥

Siđhaa sevani siđh peer maagahi riđhi siđhi ||

Some serve the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, and some serve spiritual teachers; they beg for wealth and miraculous powers.

ਮੈ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੨॥

मै इकु नामु न वीसरै साचे गुर बुधि ॥२॥

Mai īku naamu na veesarai saache gur buđhi ||2||

May I never forget the Naam, the Name of the One Lord. This is the wisdom of the True Guru. ||2||


ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਕਾਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਭਵਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ॥

जोगी भोगी कापड़ी किआ भवहि दिसंतर ॥

Jogee bhogee kaapaɍee kiâa bhavahi đisanŧŧar ||

Why do the Yogis, the revelers, and the beggars wander in foreign lands?

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੑਹੀ ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ॥੩॥

गुर का सबदु न चीन्हही ततु सारु निरंतर ॥३॥

Gur kaa sabađu na cheenʱhee ŧaŧu saaru niranŧŧar ||3||

They do not understand the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and the essence of excellence within them. ||3||


ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥

पंडित पाधे जोइसी नित पड़्हहि पुराणा ॥

Panddiŧ paađhe joīsee niŧ paɍhhi puraañaa ||

The Pandits, the religious scholars, the teachers and astrologers, and those who endlessly read the Puraanas,

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਣਾ ॥੪॥

अंतरि वसतु न जाणन्ही घटि ब्रहमु लुकाणा ॥४॥

Ânŧŧari vasaŧu na jaañanʱee ghati brhamu lukaañaa ||4||

Do not know what is within; God is hidden deep within them. ||4||


ਇਕਿ ਤਪਸੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸਾ ॥

इकि तपसी बन महि तपु करहि नित तीरथ वासा ॥

Īki ŧapasee ban mahi ŧapu karahi niŧ ŧeeraŧh vaasaa ||

Some penitents perform penance in the forests, and some dwell forever at sacred shrines.

ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥

आपु न चीनहि तामसी काहे भए उदासा ॥५॥

Âapu na cheenahi ŧaamasee kaahe bhaē ūđaasaa ||5||

The unenlightened people do not understand themselves - why have they become renunciates? ||5||


ਇਕਿ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥

इकि बिंदु जतन करि राखदे से जती कहावहि ॥

Īki binđđu jaŧan kari raakhađe se jaŧee kahaavahi ||

Some control their sexual energy, and are known as celibates.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥

बिनु गुर सबद न छूटही भ्रमि आवहि जावहि ॥६॥

Binu gur sabađ na chhootahee bhrmi âavahi jaavahi ||6||

But without the Guru's Word, they are not saved, and they wander in reincarnation. ||6||


ਇਕਿ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

इकि गिरही सेवक साधिका गुरमती लागे ॥

Īki girahee sevak saađhikaa guramaŧee laage ||

Some are householders, servants, and seekers, attached to the Guru's Teachings.

ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਜਾਗੇ ॥੭॥

नामु दानु इसनानु द्रिड़ु हरि भगति सु जागे ॥७॥

Naamu đaanu īsanaanu đriɍu hari bhagaŧi su jaage ||7||

They hold fast to the Naam, to charity, to cleansing and purification; they remain awake in devotion to the Lord. ||7||


ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥

गुर ते दरु घरु जाणीऐ सो जाइ सिञाणै ॥

Gur ŧe đaru gharu jaañeeâi so jaaī siņaañai ||

Through the Guru, the Gate of the Lord's Home is found, and that place is recognized.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੮॥੧੪॥

नानक नामु न वीसरै साचे मनु मानै ॥८॥१४॥

Naanak naamu na veesarai saache manu maanai ||8||14||

Nanak does not forget the Naam; his mind has surrendered to the True Lord. ||8||14||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

आसा महला १ ॥

Âasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਲੇ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਸਚਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥

मनसा मनहि समाइले भउजलु सचि तरणा ॥

Manasaa manahi samaaīle bhaūjalu sachi ŧarañaa ||

Stilling the desires of the mind, the mortal truly crosses over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥

आदि जुगादि दइआलु तू ठाकुर तेरी सरणा ॥१॥

Âađi jugaađi đaīâalu ŧoo thaakur ŧeree sarañaa ||1||

In the very beginning, and throughout the ages, You have been the Merciful Lord and Master; I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||


ਤੂ ਦਾਤੌ ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

तू दातौ हम जाचिका हरि दरसनु दीजै ॥

Ŧoo đaaŧau ham jaachikaa hari đarasanu đeejai ||

You are the Giver, and I am a mere beggar. Lord, please grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि नामु धिआईऐ मन मंदरु भीजै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi naamu đhiâaëeâi man manđđaru bheejai ||1|| rahaaū ||

The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam; the temple of his mind resounds with joy. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

कूड़ा लालचु छोडीऐ तउ साचु पछाणै ॥

Kooɍaa laalachu chhodeeâi ŧaū saachu pachhaañai ||

Renouncing false greed, one comes to realize the Truth.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥

गुर कै सबदि समाईऐ परमारथु जाणै ॥२॥

Gur kai sabađi samaaëeâi paramaaraŧhu jaañai ||2||

So let yourself be absorbed in the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and know this supreme realization. ||2||


ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੁਭਤਉ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥

इहु मनु राजा लोभीआ लुभतउ लोभाई ॥

Īhu manu raajaa lobheeâa lubhaŧaū lobhaaëe ||

This mind is a greedy king, engrossed in greed.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि लोभु निवारीऐ हरि सिउ बणि आई ॥३॥

Guramukhi lobhu nivaareeâi hari siū bañi âaëe ||3||

The Gurmukh eliminates his greed, and comes to an understanding with the Lord. ||3||


ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

कलरि खेती बीजीऐ किउ लाहा पावै ॥

Kalari kheŧee beejeeâi kiū laahaa paavai ||

Planting the seeds in the rocky soil, how can one reap a profit?

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥

मनमुखु सचि न भीजई कूड़ु कूड़ि गडावै ॥४॥

Manamukhu sachi na bheejaëe kooɍu kooɍi gadaavai ||4||

The self-willed manmukh is not pleased with Truth; the false are buried in falsehood. ||4||


ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

लालचु छोडहु अंधिहो लालचि दुखु भारी ॥

Laalachu chhodahu ânđđhiho laalachi đukhu bhaaree ||

So renounce greed - you are blind! Greed only brings pain.

ਸਾਚੌ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥

साचौ साहिबु मनि वसै हउमै बिखु मारी ॥५॥

Saachau saahibu mani vasai haūmai bikhu maaree ||5||

When the True Lord dwells within the mind, the poisonous ego is conquered. ||5||


ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਮੂਸਹੁਗੇ ਭਾਈ ॥

दुबिधा छोडि कुवाटड़ी मूसहुगे भाई ॥

Đubiđhaa chhodi kuvaataɍee moosahuge bhaaëe ||

Renounce the evil way of duality, or you shall be plundered, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੬॥

अहिनिसि नामु सलाहीऐ सतिगुर सरणाई ॥६॥

Âhinisi naamu salaaheeâi saŧigur sarañaaëe ||6||

Day and night, praise the Naam, in the Sanctuary of the True Guru's protection. ||6||


ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਫੀਕਾ ॥

मनमुख पथरु सैलु है ध्रिगु जीवणु फीका ॥

Manamukh paŧharu sailu hai đhrigu jeevañu pheekaa ||

The self-willed manmukh is a rock, a stone. His life is cursed and useless.

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਕਾ ॥੭॥

जल महि केता राखीऐ अभ अंतरि सूका ॥७॥

Jal mahi keŧaa raakheeâi âbh ânŧŧari sookaa ||7||

No matter now long a stone is kept under water, it still remains dry at its core. ||7||


ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥

हरि का नामु निधानु है पूरै गुरि दीआ ॥

Hari kaa naamu niđhaanu hai poorai guri đeeâa ||

The Name of the Lord is the treasure; the Perfect Guru has given it to me.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥੮॥੧੫॥

नानक नामु न वीसरै मथि अम्रितु पीआ ॥८॥१५॥

Naanak naamu na veesarai maŧhi âmmmriŧu peeâa ||8||15||

O Nanak, one who does not forget the Naam, churns and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||8||15||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਚਲੇ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਇਆ ॥

चले चलणहार वाट वटाइआ ॥

Chale chalañahaar vaat vataaīâa ||

The travelers travel from one road to another.

ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

धंधु पिटे संसारु सचु न भाइआ ॥१॥

Đhanđđhu pite sanssaaru sachu na bhaaīâa ||1||

The world is engrossed in its entanglements, and does not appreciate the Truth. ||1||


ਕਿਆ ਭਵੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

किआ भवीऐ किआ ढूढीऐ गुर सबदि दिखाइआ ॥

Kiâa bhaveeâi kiâa dhoodheeâi gur sabađi đikhaaīâa ||

Why wander around, and why go searching, when the Guru's Shabad reveals Him to us?

ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਸਰਜਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ममता मोहु विसरजिआ अपनै घरि आइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mamaŧaa mohu visarajiâa âpanai ghari âaīâa ||1|| rahaaū ||

Leaving behind egotism and attachment, I have arrived at my own home. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

सचि मिलै सचिआरु कूड़ि न पाईऐ ॥

Sachi milai sachiâaru kooɍi na paaëeâi ||

Through Truth, one meets the True One; He is not obtained through falsehood.

ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥

सचे सिउ चितु लाइ बहुड़ि न आईऐ ॥२॥

Sache siū chiŧu laaī bahuɍi na âaëeâi ||2||

Centering your consciousness on the True Lord, you shall not have to come into the world again. ||2||


ਮੋਇਆ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਰੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੂ ॥

मोइआ कउ किआ रोवहु रोइ न जाणहू ॥

Moīâa kaū kiâa rovahu roī na jaañahoo ||

Why do you weep for the dead? You do not know how to weep.

ਰੋਵਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੂ ॥੩॥

रोवहु सचु सलाहि हुकमु पछाणहू ॥३॥

Rovahu sachu salaahi hukamu pachhaañahoo ||3||

Weep by praising the True Lord, and recognize His Command. ||3||


ਹੁਕਮੀ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

हुकमी वजहु लिखाइ आइआ जाणीऐ ॥

Hukamee vajahu likhaaī âaīâa jaañeeâi ||

Blessed is the birth of one who is destined to abide by the Lord's Command.

ਲਾਹਾ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ॥੪॥

लाहा पलै पाइ हुकमु सिञाणीऐ ॥४॥

Laahaa palai paaī hukamu siņaañeeâi ||4||

He obtains the true profit, realizing the Lord's Command. ||4||


ਹੁਕਮੀ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਭਾਣੀਐ ॥

हुकमी पैधा जाइ दरगह भाणीऐ ॥

Hukamee paiđhaa jaaī đaragah bhaañeeâi ||

If it pleases the Commander, one goes to His Court, robed in honor.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥੫॥

हुकमे ही सिरि मार बंदि रबाणीऐ ॥५॥

Hukame hee siri maar banđđi rabaañeeâi ||5||

By His Command, God's slaves are hit over the head. ||5||


ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥

लाहा सचु निआउ मनि वसाईऐ ॥

Laahaa sachu niâaū mani vasaaëeâi ||

The profit is earned by enshrining Truth and justice in the mind.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਗਰਬੁ ਵਞਾਈਐ ॥੬॥

लिखिआ पलै पाइ गरबु वञाईऐ ॥६॥

Likhiâa palai paaī garabu vaņaaëeâi ||6||

They obtain what is written in their destiny, and overcome pride. ||6||


ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਵਾਦਿ ਖਪਾਈਐ ॥

मनमुखीआ सिरि मार वादि खपाईऐ ॥

Manamukheeâa siri maar vaađi khapaaëeâi ||

The self-willed manmukhs are hit over the head, and consumed by conflict.

ਠਗਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥੭॥

ठगि मुठी कूड़िआर बंन्हि चलाईऐ ॥७॥

Thagi muthee kooɍiâar bannʱi chalaaëeâi ||7||

The cheaters are plundered by falsehood; they are chained and led away. ||7||


ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੀ ॥

साहिबु रिदै वसाइ न पछोतावही ॥

Saahibu riđai vasaaī na pachhoŧaavahee ||

Enshrine the Lord Master in your mind, and you shall not have to repent.

ਗੁਨਹਾਂ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ॥੮॥

गुनहां बखसणहारु सबदु कमावही ॥८॥

Gunahaan bakhasañahaaru sabađu kamaavahee ||8||

He forgives our sins, when we practice the Teachings of the Guru's Word. ||8||


ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥

नानकु मंगै सचु गुरमुखि घालीऐ ॥

Naanaku manggai sachu guramukhi ghaaleeâi ||

Nanak begs for the True Name, which is obtained by the Gurmukh.

ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੯॥੧੬॥

मै तुझ बिनु अवरु न कोइ नदरि निहालीऐ ॥९॥१६॥

Mai ŧujh binu âvaru na koī nađari nihaaleeâi ||9||16||

Without You, I have no other at all; please, bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||9||16||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਕਿਆ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਢੂਢੀ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਘਰਿ ਬਨੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ॥

किआ जंगलु ढूढी जाइ मै घरि बनु हरीआवला ॥

Kiâa janggalu dhoodhee jaaī mai ghari banu hareeâavalaa ||

Why should I go searching in the forests, when the woods of my home are so green?

ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਤਾਵਲਾ ॥੧॥

सचि टिकै घरि आइ सबदि उतावला ॥१॥

Sachi tikai ghari âaī sabađi ūŧaavalaa ||1||

The True Word of the Shabad has instantaneously come and settled in my heart. ||1||
