ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਦਿਤੋਨੁ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥

खाणा पीणा पवित्रु है दितोनु रिजकु स्मबाहि ॥

Khaa(nn)aa pee(nn)aa pavitru hai ditonu rijaku sambbaahi ||

Eating and drinking are pure, since the Lord gives nourishment to all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਝਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

नानक जिन्ही गुरमुखि बुझिआ तिन्हा सूतकु नाहि ॥३॥

Naanak jinhee guramukhi bujhiaa tinhaa sootaku naahi ||3||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs, who understand the Lord, are not stained by impurity. ||3||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

सतिगुरु वडा करि सालाहीऐ जिसु विचि वडीआ वडिआईआ ॥

Satiguru vadaa kari saalaaheeai jisu vichi vadeeaa vadiaaeeaa ||

Praise the Great True Guru; within Him is the greatest greatness.

ਸਹਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈਆ ॥

सहि मेले ता नदरी आईआ ॥

Sahi mele taa nadaree aaeeaa ||

When the Lord causes us to meet the Guru, then we come to see them.

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਆ ॥

जा तिसु भाणा ता मनि वसाईआ ॥

Jaa tisu bhaa(nn)aa taa mani vasaaeeaa ||

When it pleases Him, they come to dwell in our minds.

ਕਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢੀਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ॥

करि हुकमु मसतकि हथु धरि विचहु मारि कढीआ बुरिआईआ ॥

Kari hukamu masataki hathu dhari vichahu maari kadheeaa buriaaeeaa ||

By His Command, when He places His hand on our foreheads, wickedness departs from within.

ਸਹਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਆ ॥੧੮॥

सहि तुठै नउ निधि पाईआ ॥१८॥

Sahi tuthai nau nidhi paaeeaa ||18||

When the Lord is thoroughly pleased, the nine treasures are obtained. ||18||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੁਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਚੈ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥

पहिला सुचा आपि होइ सुचै बैठा आइ ॥

Pahilaa suchaa aapi hoi suchai baithaa aai ||

First, purifying himself, the Brahmin comes and sits in his purified enclosure.

ਸੁਚੇ ਅਗੈ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਭਿਟਿਓ ਜਾਇ ॥

सुचे अगै रखिओनु कोइ न भिटिओ जाइ ॥

Suche agai rakhionu koi na bhitio jaai ||

The pure foods, which no one else has touched, are placed before him.

ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜੇਵਿਆ ਲਗਾ ਪੜਣਿ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

सुचा होइ कै जेविआ लगा पड़णि सलोकु ॥

Suchaa hoi kai jeviaa lagaa pa(rr)a(nn)i saloku ||

Being purified, he takes his food, and begins to read his sacred verses.

ਕੁਹਥੀ ਜਾਈ ਸਟਿਆ ਕਿਸੁ ਏਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਦੋਖੁ ॥

कुहथी जाई सटिआ किसु एहु लगा दोखु ॥

Kuhathee jaaee satiaa kisu ehu lagaa dokhu ||

But it is then thrown into a filthy place - whose fault is this?

ਅੰਨੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਲੂਣੁ ਪੰਜਵਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਘਿਰਤੁ ॥

अंनु देवता पाणी देवता बैसंतरु देवता लूणु पंजवा पाइआ घिरतु ॥

Annu devataa paa(nn)ee devataa baisanttaru devataa loo(nn)u panjjavaa paaiaa ghiratu ||

The corn is sacred, the water is sacred; the fire and salt are sacred as well; when the fifth thing, the ghee, is added,

ਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਪਾਕੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ॥

ता होआ पाकु पवितु ॥

Taa hoaa paaku pavitu ||

Then the food becomes pure and sanctified.

ਪਾਪੀ ਸਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਗਡਿਆ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਈਆ ਤਿਤੁ ॥

पापी सिउ तनु गडिआ थुका पईआ तितु ॥

Paapee siu tanu gadiaa thukaa paeeaa titu ||

Coming into contact with the sinful human body, the food becomes so impure that is spat upon.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਚਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰਸ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

जितु मुखि नामु न ऊचरहि बिनु नावै रस खाहि ॥

Jitu mukhi naamu na ucharahi binu naavai ras khaahi ||

That mouth which does not chant the Naam, and without the Name eats tasty foods

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

नानक एवै जाणीऐ तितु मुखि थुका पाहि ॥१॥

Naanak evai jaa(nn)eeai titu mukhi thukaa paahi ||1||

- O Nanak, know this: such a mouth is to be spat upon. ||1||

ਭੰਡਿ ਜੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਨਿੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਮੰਗਣੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥

भंडि जमीऐ भंडि निमीऐ भंडि मंगणु वीआहु ॥

Bhanddi jammeeai bhanddi nimmmeeai bhanddi mangga(nn)u veeaahu ||

From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੰਡਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

भंडहु होवै दोसती भंडहु चलै राहु ॥

Bhanddahu hovai dosatee bhanddahu chalai raahu ||

Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come.

ਭੰਡੁ ਮੁਆ ਭੰਡੁ ਭਾਲੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੰਧਾਨੁ ॥

भंडु मुआ भंडु भालीऐ भंडि होवै बंधानु ॥

Bhanddu muaa bhanddu bhaaleeai bhanddi hovai banddhaanu ||

When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥

सो किउ मंदा आखीऐ जितु जमहि राजान ॥

So kiu manddaa aakheeai jitu jammahi raajaan ||

So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੀ ਭੰਡੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

भंडहु ही भंडु ऊपजै भंडै बाझु न कोइ ॥

Bhanddahu hee bhanddu upajai bhanddai baajhu na koi ||

From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

नानक भंडै बाहरा एको सचा सोइ ॥

Naanak bhanddai baaharaa eko sachaa soi ||

O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

जितु मुखि सदा सालाहीऐ भागा रती चारि ॥

Jitu mukhi sadaa saalaaheeai bhaagaa ratee chaari ||

That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

नानक ते मुख ऊजले तितु सचै दरबारि ॥२॥

Naanak te mukh ujale titu sachai darabaari ||2||

O Nanak, those faces shall be radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||2||

Pauree:

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੋ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢੀਐ ॥

सभु को आखै आपणा जिसु नाही सो चुणि कढीऐ ॥

Sabhu ko aakhai aapa(nn)aa jisu naahee so chu(nn)i kadheeai ||

All call You their own, Lord; one who does not own You, is picked up and thrown away.

ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਸੰਢੀਐ ॥

कीता आपो आपणा आपे ही लेखा संढीऐ ॥

Keetaa aapo aapa(nn)aa aape hee lekhaa sanddheeai ||

Everyone receives the rewards of his own actions; his account is adjusted accordingly.

ਜਾ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਐਤੁ ਜਗਿ ਤਾ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਗਾਰਬਿ ਹੰਢੀਐ ॥

जा रहणा नाही ऐतु जगि ता काइतु गारबि हंढीऐ ॥

Jaa raha(nn)aa naahee aitu jagi taa kaaitu gaarabi handdheeai ||

Since one is not destined to remain in this world anyway, why should he ruin himself in pride?

ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੜਿ ਅਖਰੁ ਏਹੋ ਬੁਝੀਐ ॥

मंदा किसै न आखीऐ पड़ि अखरु एहो बुझीऐ ॥

Manddaa kisai na aakheeai pa(rr)i akharu eho bujheeai ||

Do not call anyone bad; read these words, and understand.

ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥

मूरखै नालि न लुझीऐ ॥१९॥

Moorakhai naali na lujheeai ||19||

Don't argue with fools. ||19||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਫਿਕੈ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

नानक फिकै बोलिऐ तनु मनु फिका होइ ॥

Naanak phikai boliai tanu manu phikaa hoi ||

O Nanak, speaking insipid words, the body and mind become insipid.

ਫਿਕੋ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਦੀਐ ਫਿਕੇ ਫਿਕੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

फिको फिका सदीऐ फिके फिकी सोइ ॥

Phiko phikaa sadeeai phike phikee soi ||

He is called the most insipid of the insipid; the most insipid of the insipid is his reputation.

ਫਿਕਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਟੀਐ ਮੁਹਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਫਿਕੇ ਪਾਇ ॥

फिका दरगह सटीऐ मुहि थुका फिके पाइ ॥

Phikaa daragah sateeai muhi thukaa phike paai ||

The insipid person is discarded in the Court of the Lord, and the insipid one's face is spat upon.

ਫਿਕਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਾਣਾ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

फिका मूरखु आखीऐ पाणा लहै सजाइ ॥१॥

Phikaa moorakhu aakheeai paa(nn)aa lahai sajaai ||1||

The insipid one is called a fool; he is beaten with shoes in punishment. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਪੈਜ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਫੈਲੁ ॥

अंदरहु झूठे पैज बाहरि दुनीआ अंदरि फैलु ॥

Anddarahu jhoothe paij baahari duneeaa anddari phailu ||

Those who are false within, and honorable on the outside, are very common in this world.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜੇ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਉਤਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈਲੁ ॥

अठसठि तीरथ जे नावहि उतरै नाही मैलु ॥

Athasathi teerath je naavahi utarai naahee mailu ||

Even though they may bathe at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, still, their filth does not depart.

ਜਿਨੑ ਪਟੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਗੁਦੜੁ ਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

जिन्ह पटु अंदरि बाहरि गुदड़ु ते भले संसारि ॥

Jinh patu anddari baahari guda(rr)u te bhale sanssaari ||

Those who have silk on the inside and rags on the outside, are the good ones in this world.

ਤਿਨੑ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਰਬ ਸੇਤੀ ਦੇਖਨੑੇ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

तिन्ह नेहु लगा रब सेती देखन्हे वीचारि ॥

Tinh nehu lagaa rab setee dekhanhe veechaari ||

They embrace love for the Lord, and contemplate beholding Him.

ਰੰਗਿ ਹਸਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਚੁਪ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

रंगि हसहि रंगि रोवहि चुप भी करि जाहि ॥

Ranggi hasahi ranggi rovahi chup bhee kari jaahi ||

In the Lord's Love, they laugh, and in the Lord's Love, they weep, and also keep silent.

ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਕੇਰੀ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਹ ॥

परवाह नाही किसै केरी बाझु सचे नाह ॥

Paravaah naahee kisai keree baajhu sache naah ||

They do not care for anything else, except their True Husband Lord.

ਦਰਿ ਵਾਟ ਉਪਰਿ ਖਰਚੁ ਮੰਗਾ ਜਬੈ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

दरि वाट उपरि खरचु मंगा जबै देइ त खाहि ॥

Dari vaat upari kharachu manggaa jabai dei ta khaahi ||

Sitting, waiting at the Lord's Door, they beg for food, and when He gives to them, they eat.

ਦੀਬਾਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਕਲਮ ਏਕਾ ਹਮਾ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥

दीबानु एको कलम एका हमा तुम्हा मेलु ॥

Deebaanu eko kalam ekaa hamaa tumhaa melu ||

There is only One Court of the Lord, and He has only one pen; there, you and I shall meet.

ਦਰਿ ਲਏ ਲੇਖਾ ਪੀੜਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਉ ਤੇਲੁ ॥੨॥

दरि लए लेखा पीड़ि छुटै नानका जिउ तेलु ॥२॥

Dari lae lekhaa pee(rr)i chhutai naanakaa jiu telu ||2||

In the Court of the Lord, the accounts are examined; O Nanak, the sinners are crushed, like oil seeds in the press. ||2||

Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਣਾ ਕੀਓ ਕਲ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਤੈ ਧਾਰੀਐ ॥

आपे ही करणा कीओ कल आपे ही तै धारीऐ ॥

Aape hee kara(nn)aa keeo kal aape hee tai dhaareeai ||

You Yourself created the creation; You Yourself infused Your power into it.

ਦੇਖਹਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਧਰਿ ਕਚੀ ਪਕੀ ਸਾਰੀਐ ॥

देखहि कीता आपणा धरि कची पकी सारीऐ ॥

Dekhahi keetaa aapa(nn)aa dhari kachee pakee saareeai ||

You behold Your creation, like the losing and winning dice of the earth.

ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਆਈ ਵਾਰੀਐ ॥

जो आइआ सो चलसी सभु कोई आई वारीऐ ॥

Jo aaiaa so chalasee sabhu koee aaee vaareeai ||

Whoever has come, shall depart; all shall have their turn.

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣ ਹਹਿ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ॥

जिस के जीअ पराण हहि किउ साहिबु मनहु विसारीऐ ॥

Jis ke jeea paraa(nn) hahi kiu saahibu manahu visaareeai ||

He who owns our soul, and our very breath of life - why should we forget that Lord and Master from our minds?

ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਵਾਰੀਐ ॥੨੦॥

आपण हथी आपणा आपे ही काजु सवारीऐ ॥२०॥

Aapa(nn) hathee aapa(nn)aa aape hee kaaju savaareeai ||20||

With our own hands, let us resolve our own affairs. ||20||

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥

Shalok, Second Mehl:

ਏਹ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ਆਸਕੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

एह किनेही आसकी दूजै लगै जाइ ॥

Eh kinehee aasakee doojai lagai jaai ||

What sort of love is this, which clings to duality?

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਸਕੁ ਕਾਂਢੀਐ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

नानक आसकु कांढीऐ सद ही रहै समाइ ॥

Naanak aasaku kaandheeai sad hee rahai samaai ||

O Nanak, he alone is called a lover, who remains forever immersed in absorption.

ਚੰਗੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੰਨੇ ਮੰਦੈ ਮੰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

चंगै चंगा करि मंने मंदै मंदा होइ ॥

Changgai changgaa kari manne manddai manddaa hoi ||

But one who feels good only when good is done for him, and feels bad when things go badly

ਆਸਕੁ ਏਹੁ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

आसकु एहु न आखीऐ जि लेखै वरतै सोइ ॥१॥

Aasaku ehu na aakheeai ji lekhai varatai soi ||1||

- do not call him a lover. He trades only for his own account. ||1||

ਮਹਲਾ ੨ ॥

महला २ ॥

Mahalaa 2 ||

Second Mehl:

ਸਲਾਮੁ ਜਬਾਬੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਮੁੰਢਹੁ ਘੁਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

सलामु जबाबु दोवै करे मुंढहु घुथा जाइ ॥

Salaamu jabaabu dovai kare munddhahu ghuthaa jaai ||

One who offers both respectful greetings and rude refusal to his master, has gone wrong from the very beginning.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੋਵੈ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक दोवै कूड़ीआ थाइ न काई पाइ ॥२॥

Naanak dovai koo(rr)eeaa thaai na kaaee paai ||2||

O Nanak, both of his actions are false; he obtains no place in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੀਐ ॥

जितु सेविऐ सुखु पाईऐ सो साहिबु सदा सम्हालीऐ ॥

Jitu seviai sukhu paaeeai so saahibu sadaa samhaaleeai ||

Serving Him, peace is obtained; meditate and dwell upon that Lord and Master forever.

ਜਿਤੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾ ਘਾਲ ਬੁਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥

जितु कीता पाईऐ आपणा सा घाल बुरी किउ घालीऐ ॥

Jitu keetaa paaeeai aapa(nn)aa saa ghaal buree kiu ghaaleeai ||

Why do you do such evil deeds, that you shall have to suffer so?

ਮੰਦਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਕੀਚਈ ਦੇ ਲੰਮੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥

मंदा मूलि न कीचई दे लमी नदरि निहालीऐ ॥

Manddaa mooli na keechaee de lammee nadari nihaaleeai ||

Do not do any evil at all; look ahead to the future with foresight.

ਜਿਉ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਹਾਰੀਐ ਤੇਵੇਹਾ ਪਾਸਾ ਢਾਲੀਐ ॥

जिउ साहिब नालि न हारीऐ तेवेहा पासा ढालीऐ ॥

Jiu saahib naali na haareeai tevehaa paasaa dhaaleeai ||

So throw the dice in such a way, that you shall not lose with your Lord and Master.

ਕਿਛੁ ਲਾਹੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥੨੧॥

किछु लाहे उपरि घालीऐ ॥२१॥

Kichhu laahe upari ghaaleeai ||21||

Do those deeds which shall bring you profit. ||21||

ਚਾਕਰੁ ਲਗੈ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਨਾਲੇ ਗਾਰਬੁ ਵਾਦੁ ॥

चाकरु लगै चाकरी नाले गारबु वादु ॥

Chaakaru lagai chaakaree naale gaarabu vaadu ||

If a servant performs service, while being vain and argumentative,

ਗਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਘਣੇਰੀਆ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਸਾਦੁ ॥

गला करे घणेरीआ खसम न पाए सादु ॥

Galaa kare gha(nn)ereeaa khasam na paae saadu ||

He may talk as much as he wants, but he shall not be pleasing to his Master.

ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

आपु गवाइ सेवा करे ता किछु पाए मानु ॥

Aapu gavaai sevaa kare taa kichhu paae maanu ||

But if he eliminates his self-conceit and then performs service, he shall be honored.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਗਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਲਗਾ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

नानक जिस नो लगा तिसु मिलै लगा सो परवानु ॥१॥

Naanak jis no lagaa tisu milai lagaa so paravaanu ||1||

O Nanak, if he merges with the one with whom he is attached, his attachment becomes acceptable. ||1||

ਜੋ ਜੀਇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਮੁਹ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਵਾਉ ॥

जो जीइ होइ सु उगवै मुह का कहिआ वाउ ॥

Jo jeei hoi su ugavai muh kaa kahiaa vaau ||

Whatever is in the mind, comes forth; spoken words by themselves are just wind.

ਬੀਜੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਆਉ ॥੨॥

बीजे बिखु मंगै अम्रितु वेखहु एहु निआउ ॥२॥

Beeje bikhu manggai ammmritu vekhahu ehu niaau ||2||

He sows seeds of poison, and demands Ambrosial Nectar. Behold - what justice is this? ||2||

ਨਾਲਿ ਇਆਣੇ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

Naali iaa(nn)e dosatee kade na aavai raasi ||

Friendship with a fool never works out right.

ਜੇਹਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਹੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥

जेहा जाणै तेहो वरतै वेखहु को निरजासि ॥

Jehaa jaa(nn)ai teho varatai vekhahu ko nirajaasi ||

As he knows, he acts; behold, and see that it is so.

ਵਸਤੂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਦੂਜੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥

वसतू अंदरि वसतु समावै दूजी होवै पासि ॥

Vasatoo anddari vasatu samaavai doojee hovai paasi ||

One thing can be absorbed into another thing, but duality keeps them apart.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੇਤੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਕਹੀ ਬਣੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

साहिब सेती हुकमु न चलै कही बणै अरदासि ॥

Saahib setee hukamu na chalai kahee ba(nn)ai aradaasi ||

No one can issue commands to the Lord Master; offer instead humble prayers.

ਕੂੜਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਵਿਗਾਸਿ ॥੩॥

कूड़ि कमाणै कूड़ो होवै नानक सिफति विगासि ॥३॥

Koo(rr)i kamaa(nn)ai koo(rr)o hovai naanak siphati vigaasi ||3||

Practicing falsehood, only falsehood is obtained. O Nanak, through the Lord's Praise, one blossoms forth. ||3||

Friendship with a fool, and love with a pompous person,

ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲੀਕ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਥਾਉ ਨ ਥੇਹੁ ॥੪॥

पाणी अंदरि लीक जिउ तिस दा थाउ न थेहु ॥४॥

Paa(nn)ee anddari leek jiu tis daa thaau na thehu ||4||

Are like lines drawn in water, leaving no trace or mark. ||4||

ਹੋਇ ਇਆਣਾ ਕਰੇ ਕੰਮੁ ਆਣਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

Hoi iaa(nn)aa kare kammu aa(nn)i na sakai raasi ||

If a fool does a job, he cannot do it right.

ਜੇ ਇਕ ਅਧ ਚੰਗੀ ਕਰੇ ਦੂਜੀ ਭੀ ਵੇਰਾਸਿ ॥੫॥

जे इक अध चंगी करे दूजी भी वेरासि ॥५॥

Je ik adh changgee kare doojee bhee veraasi ||5||

Even if he does something right, he does the next thing wrong. ||5||

ਚਾਕਰੁ ਲਗੈ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਚਲੈ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

चाकरु लगै चाकरी जे चलै खसमै भाइ ॥

Chaakaru lagai chaakaree je chalai khasamai bhaai ||

If a servant, performing service, obeys the Will of his Master,

ਹੁਰਮਤਿ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਅਗਲੀ ਓਹੁ ਵਜਹੁ ਭਿ ਦੂਣਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

हुरमति तिस नो अगली ओहु वजहु भि दूणा खाइ ॥

Huramati tis no agalee ohu vajahu bhi doo(nn)aa khaai ||

His honor increases, and he receives double his wages.

ਖਸਮੈ ਕਰੇ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਗੈਰਤਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

खसमै करे बराबरी फिरि गैरति अंदरि पाइ ॥

Khasamai kare baraabaree phiri gairati anddari paai ||

But if he claims to be equal to his Master, he earns his Master's displeasure.

ਵਜਹੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਅਗਲਾ ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਾਣਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

वजहु गवाए अगला मुहे मुहि पाणा खाइ ॥

Vajahu gavaae agalaa muhe muhi paa(nn)aa khaai ||

He loses his entire salary, and is also beaten on his face with shoes.

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥

जिस दा दिता खावणा तिसु कहीऐ साबासि ॥

Jis daa ditaa khaava(nn)aa tisu kaheeai saabaasi ||

Let us all celebrate Him, from whom we receive our nourishment.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਨਾਲਿ ਖਸਮ ਚਲੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥੨੨॥

नानक हुकमु न चलई नालि खसम चलै अरदासि ॥२२॥

Naanak hukamu na chalaee naali khasam chalai aradaasi ||22||

O Nanak, no one can issue commands to the Lord Master; let us offer prayers instead. ||22||

Eh kinehee daati aapas te jo paaeeai ||

What sort of gift is this, which we receive only by our own asking?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਕਰਮਾਤਿ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੁਠੈ ਜੋ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੧॥

नानक सा करमाति साहिब तुठै जो मिलै ॥१॥

Naanak saa karamaati saahib tuthai jo milai ||1||

O Nanak, that is the most wonderful gift, which is received from the Lord, when He is totally pleased. ||1||

ਏਹ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਉ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

Eh kinehee chaakaree jitu bhau khasam na jaai ||

What sort of service is this, by which the fear of the Lord Master does not depart?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਕਾਢੀਐ ਜਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਖਸਮ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक सेवकु काढीऐ जि सेती खसम समाइ ॥२॥

Naanak sevaku kaadheeai ji setee khasam samaai ||2||

O Nanak, he alone is called a servant, who merges with the Lord Master. ||2||

Naanak antt na jaapanhee hari taa ke paaraavaar ||

O Nanak, the Lord's limits cannot be known; He has no end or limitation.

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਸਾਖਤੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਮਾਰ ॥

आपि कराए साखती फिरि आपि कराए मार ॥

Aapi karaae saakhatee phiri aapi karaae maar ||

He Himself creates, and then He Himself destroys.

ਇਕਨੑਾ ਗਲੀ ਜੰਜੀਰੀਆ ਇਕਿ ਤੁਰੀ ਚੜਹਿ ਬਿਸੀਆਰ ॥

इकन्हा गली जंजीरीआ इकि तुरी चड़हि बिसीआर ॥

Ikanhaa galee janjjeereeaa iki turee cha(rr)ahi biseeaar ||

Some have chains around their necks, while some ride on many horses.

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਹਉ ਕੈ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

आपि कराए करे आपि हउ कै सिउ करी पुकार ॥

Aapi karaae kare aapi hau kai siu karee pukaar ||

He Himself acts, and He Himself causes us to act. Unto whom should I complain?

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰ ॥੨੩॥

नानक करणा जिनि कीआ फिरि तिस ही करणी सार ॥२३॥

Naanak kara(nn)aa jini keeaa phiri tis hee kara(nn)ee saar ||23||

O Nanak, the One who created the creation - He Himself takes care of it. ||23||

ਆਪੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਸਾਜਿਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਪੂਰਣੁ ਦੇਇ ॥

आपे भांडे साजिअनु आपे पूरणु देइ ॥

Aape bhaande saajianu aape poora(nn)u dei ||

He Himself fashioned the vessel of the body, and He Himself fills it.

ਇਕਨੑੀ ਦੁਧੁ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਇਕਿ ਚੁਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਰਹਨੑਿ ਚੜੇ ॥

इकन्ही दुधु समाईऐ इकि चुल्है रहन्हि चड़े ॥

Ikanhee dudhu samaaeeai iki chulhai rahanhi cha(rr)e ||

Into some, milk is poured, while others remain on the fire.

ਇਕਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ਪੈ ਸਵਨੑਿ ਇਕਿ ਉਪਰਿ ਰਹਨਿ ਖੜੇ ॥

इकि निहाली पै सवन्हि इकि उपरि रहनि खड़े ॥

Iki nihaalee pai savanhi iki upari rahani kha(rr)e ||

Some lie down and sleep on soft beds, while others remain watchful.

ਤਿਨੑਾ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨੑ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥

तिन्हा सवारे नानका जिन्ह कउ नदरि करे ॥१॥

Tinhaa savaare naanakaa jinh kau nadari kare ||1||

He adorns those, O Nanak, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace. ||1||

ਆਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਜਾਈ ਭਿ ਰਖੈ ਆਪਿ ॥

Aape saaje kare aapi jaaee bhi rakhai aapi ||

He Himself creates and fashions the world, and He Himself keeps it in order.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥

तिसु विचि जंत उपाइ कै देखै थापि उथापि ॥

Tisu vichi jantt upaai kai dekhai thaapi uthaapi ||

Having created the beings within it, He oversees their birth and death.

ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥

किस नो कहीऐ नानका सभु किछु आपे आपि ॥२॥

Kis no kaheeai naanakaa sabhu kichhu aape aapi ||2||

Unto whom should we speak, O Nanak, when He Himself is all-in-all? ||2||

ਵਡੇ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

वडे कीआ वडिआईआ किछु कहणा कहणु न जाइ ॥

Vade keeaa vadiaaeeaa kichhu kaha(nn)aa kaha(nn)u na jaai ||

The description of the greatness of the Great Lord cannot be described.

ਸੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਾਦਰ ਕਰੀਮੁ ਦੇ ਜੀਆ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥

सो करता कादर करीमु दे जीआ रिजकु स्मबाहि ॥

So karataa kaadar kareemu de jeeaa rijaku sambbaahi ||

He is the Creator, all-powerful and benevolent; He gives sustenance to all beings.

ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਧੁਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਤਿੰਨੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

साई कार कमावणी धुरि छोडी तिंनै पाइ ॥

Saaee kaar kamaava(nn)ee dhuri chhodee tinnai paai ||

The mortal does that work, which has been pre-destined from the very beginning.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੀ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

नानक एकी बाहरी होर दूजी नाही जाइ ॥

Naanak ekee baaharee hor doojee naahee jaai ||

O Nanak, except for the One Lord, there is no other place at all.

ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੨੪॥੧॥ ਸੁਧੁ

सो करे जि तिसै रजाइ ॥२४॥१॥ सुधु

So kare ji tisai rajaai ||24||1|| sudhu

ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिनामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुरप्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satinaamu karataa purakhu nirabhau niravairu akaal moorati ajoonee saibhann guraprsaadi ||

ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣ ਲਾਗਿ ਹਮ ਬਿਨਵਤਾ ਪੂਛਤ ਕਹ ਜੀਉ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

गुर चरण लागि हम बिनवता पूछत कह जीउ पाइआ ॥

Gur chara(nn) laagi ham binavataa poochhat kah jeeu paaiaa ||

Falling at the Feet of the Guru, I pray, and ask Him, ""Why was man created?

ਕਵਨ ਕਾਜਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਹਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

कवन काजि जगु उपजै बिनसै कहहु मोहि समझाइआ ॥१॥

Kavan kaaji jagu upajai binasai kahahu mohi samajhaaiaa ||1||

What deeds cause the world to come into being, and be destroyed? Tell me, that I may understand."" ||1||

ਦੇਵ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਭੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥

देव करहु दइआ मोहि मारगि लावहु जितु भै बंधन तूटै ॥

Dev karahu daiaa mohi maaragi laavahu jitu bhai banddhan tootai ||

O Divine Guru, please, show Mercy to me, and place me on the right path, by which the bonds of fear may be cut away.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਫੇੜ ਕਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਜੀਅ ਜਨਮ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जनम मरन दुख फेड़ करम सुख जीअ जनम ते छूटै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Janam maran dukh phe(rr) karam sukh jeea janam te chhootai ||1|| rahaau ||

The pains of birth and death come from past actions and karma; peace comes when the soul finds release from reincarnation. ||1|| Pause ||

ਮਾਇਆ ਫਾਸ ਬੰਧ ਨਹੀ ਫਾਰੈ ਅਰੁ ਮਨ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਨ ਲੂਕੇ ॥

माइआ फास बंध नही फारै अरु मन सुंनि न लूके ॥

Maaiaa phaas banddh nahee phaarai aru man sunni na looke ||

The mortal does not break free from the bonds of the noose of Maya, and he does not seek the shelter of the profound, absolute Lord.

ਆਪਾ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੑਿਆ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਭਿਉ ਨ ਚੂਕੇ ॥੨॥

आपा पदु निरबाणु न चीन्हिआ इन बिधि अभिउ न चूके ॥२॥

Aapaa padu nirabaa(nn)u na cheenhiaa in bidhi abhiu na chooke ||2||

He does not realize the dignity of the self, and Nirvaanaa; because of this, his doubt does not depart. ||2||

ਕਹੀ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਉਪਜੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਭਾਵ ਅਭਾਵ ਬਿਹੂਣਾ ॥

कही न उपजै उपजी जाणै भाव अभाव बिहूणा ॥

Kahee na upajai upajee jaa(nn)ai bhaav abhaav bihoo(nn)aa ||

The soul is not born, even though he thinks it is born; it is free from birth and death.

ਉਦੈ ਅਸਤ ਕੀ ਮਨ ਬੁਧਿ ਨਾਸੀ ਤਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣਾ ॥੩॥

उदै असत की मन बुधि नासी तउ सदा सहजि लिव लीणा ॥३॥

Udai asat kee man budhi naasee tau sadaa sahaji liv lee(nn)aa ||3||

When the mortal gives up his ideas of birth and death, he remains constantly absorbed in the Lord's Love. ||3||

ਜਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਬਿੰਬੁ ਬਿੰਬ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ ਉਦਕ ਕੁੰਭੁ ਬਿਗਰਾਨਾ ॥

जिउ प्रतिबि्मबु बि्मब कउ मिली है उदक कु्मभु बिगराना ॥

Jiu prtibimbbu bimbb kau milee hai udak kumbbhu bigaraanaa ||

As the reflection of an object blends in the water when the pitcher is broken,

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਐਸਾ ਗੁਣ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਨਾਂ ॥੪॥੧॥

कहु कबीर ऐसा गुण भ्रमु भागा तउ मनु सुंनि समानां ॥४॥१॥

Kahu kabeer aisaa gu(nn) bhrmu bhaagaa tau manu sunni samaanaan ||4||1||

Says Kabeer, just so virtue dispels doubt, and then the soul is absorbed in the profound, absolute Lord. ||4||1||

गज साढे तै तै धोतीआ तिहरे पाइनि तग ॥

Gaj saadhe tai tai dhoteeaa tihare paaini tag ||

They wear loin cloths, three and a half yards long, and triple-wound sacred threads.

ਗਲੀ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਜਪਮਾਲੀਆ ਲੋਟੇ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਬਗ ॥

गली जिन्हा जपमालीआ लोटे हथि निबग ॥

Galee jinhaa japamaaleeaa lote hathi nibag ||

They have rosaries around their necks, and they carry glittering jugs in their hands.

ਓਇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਨਾਰਸਿ ਕੇ ਠਗ ॥੧॥

ओइ हरि के संत न आखीअहि बानारसि के ठग ॥१॥

Oi hari ke santt na aakheeahi baanaarasi ke thag ||1||

They are not called Saints of the Lord - they are thugs of Benares. ||1||

ਐਸੇ ਸੰਤ ਨ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥

ऐसे संत न मो कउ भावहि ॥

Aise santt na mo kau bhaavahi ||

Such 'saints' are not pleasing to me;

ਡਾਲਾ ਸਿਉ ਪੇਡਾ ਗਟਕਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

डाला सिउ पेडा गटकावहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Daalaa siu pedaa gatakaavahi ||1|| rahaau ||

They eat the trees along with the branches. ||1|| Pause ||

ਬਾਸਨ ਮਾਂਜਿ ਚਰਾਵਹਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਾਠੀ ਧੋਇ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ॥

बासन मांजि चरावहि ऊपरि काठी धोइ जलावहि ॥

Baasan maanji charaavahi upari kaathee dhoi jalaavahi ||

They wash their pots and pans before putting them on the stove, and they wash the wood before lighting it.

ਬਸੁਧਾ ਖੋਦਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦੁਇ ਚੂਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥੨॥

बसुधा खोदि करहि दुइ चूल्हे सारे माणस खावहि ॥२॥

Basudhaa khodi karahi dui choolhe saare maa(nn)as khaavahi ||2||

They dig up the earth and make two fireplaces, but they eat the whole person! ||2||

ਓਇ ਪਾਪੀ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਅਪਰਸ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥

ओइ पापी सदा फिरहि अपराधी मुखहु अपरस कहावहि ॥

Oi paapee sadaa phirahi aparaadhee mukhahu aparas kahaavahi ||

Those sinners continually wander in evil deeds, while they call themselves touch-nothing saints.

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਸਗਲ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਡੁਬਾਵਹਿ ॥੩॥

सदा सदा फिरहि अभिमानी सगल कुट्मब डुबावहि ॥३॥

Sadaa sadaa phirahi abhimaanee sagal kutambb dubaavahi ||3||

They wander around forever and ever in their self-conceit, and all their families are drowned. ||3||

ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਤੈਸੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

जितु को लाइआ तित ही लागा तैसे करम कमावै ॥

Jitu ko laaiaa tit hee laagaa taise karam kamaavai ||

He is attached to that, to which the Lord has attached him, and he acts accordingly.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥੨॥

कहु कबीर जिसु सतिगुरु भेटै पुनरपि जनमि न आवै ॥४॥२॥

Kahu kabeer jisu satiguru bhetai punarapi janami na aavai ||4||2||

Says Kabeer, one who meets the True Guru, is not reincarnated again. ||4||2||

ਬਾਪਿ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਮੇਰੋ ਕੀਨੑਾ ॥

बापि दिलासा मेरो कीन्हा ॥

Baapi dilaasaa mero keenhaa ||

My Father has comforted me.

ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਦੀਨੑਾ ॥

सेज सुखाली मुखि अम्रितु दीन्हा ॥

Sej sukhaalee mukhi ammmritu deenhaa ||

He has given me a cozy bed, and placed His Ambrosial Nectar in my mouth.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਪ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥

तिसु बाप कउ किउ मनहु विसारी ॥

Tisu baap kau kiu manahu visaaree ||

How could I forget that Father from my mind?

ਆਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਨ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

आगै गइआ न बाजी हारी ॥१॥

Aagai gaiaa na baajee haaree ||1||

When I go to the world hereafter, I shall not lose the game. ||1||

ਮੁਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ਹਉ ਖਰਾ ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ॥

मुई मेरी माई हउ खरा सुखाला ॥

Muee meree maaee hau kharaa sukhaalaa ||

Maya is dead, O mother, and I am very happy.

ਪਹਿਰਉ ਨਹੀ ਦਗਲੀ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਪਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पहिरउ नही दगली लगै न पाला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Pahirau nahee dagalee lagai na paalaa ||1|| rahaau ||

I do not wear the patched coat, nor do I feel the chill. ||1|| Pause ||

ਬਲਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਪੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਉ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

बलि तिसु बापै जिनि हउ जाइआ ॥

Bali tisu baapai jini hau jaaiaa ||

I am a sacrifice to my Father, who gave me life.

ਪੰਚਾ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

पंचा ते मेरा संगु चुकाइआ ॥

Pancchaa te meraa sanggu chukaaiaa ||

He put an end to my association with the five deadly sins.

ਪੰਚ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਾਵਾ ਤਲਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥

पंच मारि पावा तलि दीने ॥

Pancch maari paavaa tali deene ||

I have conquered those five demons, and trampled them underfoot.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨੇ ॥੨॥

हरि सिमरनि मेरा मनु तनु भीने ॥२॥

Hari simarani meraa manu tanu bheene ||2||

Remembering the Lord in meditation, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2||

ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਵਡ ਗੋਸਾਈ ॥

पिता हमारो वड गोसाई ॥

Pitaa hamaaro vad gosaaee ||

My Father is the Great Lord of the Universe.

ਤਿਸੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਪਹਿ ਹਉ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

तिसु पिता पहि हउ किउ करि जाई ॥

Tisu pitaa pahi hau kiu kari jaaee ||

How shall I go to that Father?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਤ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

सतिगुर मिले त मारगु दिखाइआ ॥

Satigur mile ta maaragu dikhaaiaa ||

When I met the True Guru, He showed me the Way.

ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

जगत पिता मेरै मनि भाइआ ॥३॥

Jagat pitaa merai mani bhaaiaa ||3||

The Father of the Universe is pleasing to my mind. ||3||

ਹਉ ਪੂਤੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਬਾਪੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥

हउ पूतु तेरा तूं बापु मेरा ॥

Hau pootu teraa toonn baapu meraa ||

I am Your son, and You are my Father.

ਏਕੈ ਠਾਹਰ ਦੁਹਾ ਬਸੇਰਾ ॥

एकै ठाहर दुहा बसेरा ॥

Ekai thaahar duhaa baseraa ||

We both dwell in the same place.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜਨਿ ਏਕੋ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥

कहु कबीर जनि एको बूझिआ ॥

Kahu kabeer jani eko boojhiaa ||

Says Kabeer, the Lord's humble servant knows only the One.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝਿਆ ॥੪॥੩॥

गुर प्रसादि मै सभु किछु सूझिआ ॥४॥३॥

Gur prsaadi mai sabhu kichhu soojhiaa ||4||3||

By Guru's Grace, I have come to know everything. ||4||3||

ਇਕਤੁ ਪਤਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਉਰਕਟ ਕੁਰਕਟ ਇਕਤੁ ਪਤਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਪਾਨੀ ॥

इकतु पतरि भरि उरकट कुरकट इकतु पतरि भरि पानी ॥

Ikatu patari bhari urakat kurakat ikatu patari bhari paanee ||

In one pot, they put a boiled chicken, and in the other pot, they put wine.

ਆਸਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਪੰਚ ਜੋਗੀਆ ਬੈਠੇ ਬੀਚਿ ਨਕਟ ਦੇ ਰਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

आसि पासि पंच जोगीआ बैठे बीचि नकट दे रानी ॥१॥

Aasi paasi pancch jogeeaa baithe beechi nakat de raanee ||1||

The five Yogis of the Tantric ritual sit there, and in their midst sits the noseless one, the shameless queen. ||1||

ਨਕਟੀ ਕੋ ਠਨਗਨੁ ਬਾਡਾ ਡੂੰ ॥

नकटी को ठनगनु बाडा डूं ॥

Nakatee ko thanaganu baadaa doonn ||

The bell of the shameless queen, Maya, rings in both worlds.

ਕਿਨਹਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੀ ਕਾਟੀ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

किनहि बिबेकी काटी तूं ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kinahi bibekee kaatee toonn ||1|| rahaau ||

Some rare person of discriminating wisdom has cut off your nose. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਗਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਕਟੀ ਕਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਸਗਲ ਮਾਰਿ ਅਉਹੇਰੀ ॥

सगल माहि नकटी का वासा सगल मारि अउहेरी ॥

Sagal maahi nakatee kaa vaasaa sagal maari auheree ||

Within all dwells the noseless Maya, who kills all, and destroys them.

ਸਗਲਿਆ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਬਹਿਨ ਭਾਨਜੀ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਬਰੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਰੀ ॥੨॥

सगलिआ की हउ बहिन भानजी जिनहि बरी तिसु चेरी ॥२॥

Sagaliaa kee hau bahin bhaanajee jinahi baree tisu cheree ||2||

She says, ""I am the sister, and the daughter of the sister of everyone; I am the hand-maiden of one who marries me."" ||2||

ਹਮਰੋ ਭਰਤਾ ਬਡੋ ਬਿਬੇਕੀ ਆਪੇ ਸੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥

हमरो भरता बडो बिबेकी आपे संतु कहावै ॥

Hamaro bharataa bado bibekee aape santtu kahaavai ||

My Husband is the Great One of discriminating wisdom; He alone is called a Saint.

ਓਹੁ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਮਾਥੈ ਕਾਇਮੁ ਅਉਰੁ ਹਮਰੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੩॥

ओहु हमारै माथै काइमु अउरु हमरै निकटि न आवै ॥३॥

Ohu hamaarai maathai kaaimu auru hamarai nikati na aavai ||3||

He stands by me, and no one else comes near me. ||3||

ਨਾਕਹੁ ਕਾਟੀ ਕਾਨਹੁ ਕਾਟੀ ਕਾਟਿ ਕੂਟਿ ਕੈ ਡਾਰੀ ॥

नाकहु काटी कानहु काटी काटि कूटि कै डारी ॥

Naakahu kaatee kaanahu kaatee kaati kooti kai daaree ||

I have cut off her nose, and cut off her ears, and cutting her into bits, I have expelled her.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਬੈਰਨਿ ਤੀਨਿ ਲੋਕ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥੪॥੪॥

कहु कबीर संतन की बैरनि तीनि लोक की पिआरी ॥४॥४॥

Kahu kabeer santtan kee bairani teeni lok kee piaaree ||4||4||

Says Kabeer, she is the darling of the three worlds, but the enemy of the Saints. ||4||4||

ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਤਪੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਹੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥

जोगी जती तपी संनिआसी बहु तीरथ भ्रमना ॥

Jogee jatee tapee sanniaasee bahu teerath bhrmanaa ||

The Yogis, celibates, penitents and Sannyaasees make pilgrimages to all the sacred places.

ਲੁੰਜਿਤ ਮੁੰਜਿਤ ਮੋਨਿ ਜਟਾਧਰ ਅੰਤਿ ਤਊ ਮਰਨਾ ॥੧॥

लुंजित मुंजित मोनि जटाधर अंति तऊ मरना ॥१॥

Lunjjit munjjit moni jataadhar antti tau maranaa ||1||

The Jains with shaven heads, the silent ones, the beggars with matted hair - in the end, they all shall die. ||1||

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਸੇਵੀਅਲੇ ਰਾਮਨਾ ॥

ता ते सेवीअले रामना ॥

Taa te seveeale raamanaa ||

Meditate, therefore, on the Lord.

ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਜਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

रसना राम नाम हितु जा कै कहा करै जमना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Rasanaa raam naam hitu jaa kai kahaa karai jamanaa ||1|| rahaau ||

What can the Messenger of Death do to one whose tongue loves the Name of the Lord? ||1|| Pause ||

ਆਗਮ ਨਿਰਗਮ ਜੋਤਿਕ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਆਕਰਨਾ ॥

आगम निरगम जोतिक जानहि बहु बहु बिआकरना ॥

Aagam niragam jotik jaanahi bahu bahu biaakaranaa ||

Those who know the Shaastras and the Vedas, astrology and the rules of grammar of many languages;

ਤੰਤ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਭ ਅਉਖਧ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਤਊ ਮਰਨਾ ॥੨॥

तंत मंत्र सभ अउखध जानहि अंति तऊ मरना ॥२॥

Tantt manttr sabh aukhadh jaanahi antti tau maranaa ||2||

Those who know Tantras and mantras and all medicines - even they shall die in the end. ||2||

ਰਾਜ ਭੋਗ ਅਰੁ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨ ਬਹੁ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਰਮਨਾ ॥

राज भोग अरु छत्र सिंघासन बहु सुंदरि रमना ॥

Raaj bhog aru chhatr singghaasan bahu sunddari ramanaa ||

Those who enjoy regal power and rule, royal canopies and thrones, many beautiful women,

ਪਾਨ ਕਪੂਰ ਸੁਬਾਸਕ ਚੰਦਨ ਅੰਤਿ ਤਊ ਮਰਨਾ ॥੩॥

पान कपूर सुबासक चंदन अंति तऊ मरना ॥३॥

Paan kapoor subaasak chanddan antti tau maranaa ||3||

Betel nuts, camphor and fragrant sandalwood oil - in the end, they too shall die. ||3||

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਭ ਖੋਜੇ ਕਹੂ ਨ ਊਬਰਨਾ ॥

बेद पुरान सिम्रिति सभ खोजे कहू न ऊबरना ॥

Bed puraan simmmriti sabh khoje kahoo na ubaranaa ||

I have searched all the Vedas, Puraanas and Simritees, but none of these can save anyone.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਉ ਰਾਮਹਿ ਜੰਪਉ ਮੇਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨਾ ॥੪॥੫॥

कहु कबीर इउ रामहि ज्मपउ मेटि जनम मरना ॥४॥५॥

Kahu kabeer iu raamahi jamppau meti janam maranaa ||4||5||

Says Kabeer, meditate on the Lord, and eliminate birth and death. ||4||5||

ਫੀਲੁ ਰਬਾਬੀ ਬਲਦੁ ਪਖਾਵਜ ਕਊਆ ਤਾਲ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥

फीलु रबाबी बलदु पखावज कऊआ ताल बजावै ॥

Pheelu rabaabee baladu pakhaavaj kauaa taal bajaavai ||

The elephant is the guitar player, the ox is the drummer, and the crow plays the cymbals.

ਪਹਿਰਿ ਚੋਲਨਾ ਗਦਹਾ ਨਾਚੈ ਭੈਸਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

पहिरि चोलना गदहा नाचै भैसा भगति करावै ॥१॥

Pahiri cholanaa gadahaa naachai bhaisaa bhagati karaavai ||1||

Putting on the skirt, the donkey dances around, and the water buffalo performs devotional worship. ||1||

ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਕਕਰੀਆ ਬਰੇ ਪਕਾਏ ॥

राजा राम ककरीआ बरे पकाए ॥

Raajaa raam kakareeaa bare pakaae ||

The Lord, the King, has cooked the cakes of ice,

ਕਿਨੈ ਬੂਝਨਹਾਰੈ ਖਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

किनै बूझनहारै खाए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kinai boojhanahaarai khaae ||1|| rahaau ||

But only the rare man of understanding eats them. ||1|| Pause ||

ਬੈਠਿ ਸਿੰਘੁ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਨ ਲਗਾਵੈ ਘੀਸ ਗਲਉਰੇ ਲਿਆਵੈ ॥

बैठि सिंघु घरि पान लगावै घीस गलउरे लिआवै ॥

Baithi singghu ghari paan lagaavai ghees galaure liaavai ||

Sitting in his den, the lion prepares the betel leaves, and the muskrat brings the betel nuts.

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮੁਸਰੀ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਕਛੂਆ ਸੰਖੁ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

घरि घरि मुसरी मंगलु गावहि कछूआ संखु बजावै ॥२॥

Ghari ghari musaree manggalu gaavahi kachhooaa sankkhu bajaavai ||2||

Going from house to house, the mouse sings the songs of joy, and the turtle blows on the conch-shell. ||2||

ਬੰਸ ਕੋ ਪੂਤੁ ਬੀਆਹਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਸੁਇਨੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਛਾਏ ॥

बंस को पूतु बीआहन चलिआ सुइने मंडप छाए ॥

Banss ko pootu beeaahan chaliaa suine manddap chhaae ||

The son of the sterile woman goes to get married, and the golden canopy is spread out for him.

ਰੂਪ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਬੇਧੀ ਸਸੈ ਸਿੰਘ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੩॥

रूप कंनिआ सुंदरि बेधी ससै सिंघ गुन गाए ॥३॥

Roop kanniaa sunddari bedhee sasai singgh gun gaae ||3||

He marries a beautiful and enticing young woman; the rabbit and the lion sing their praises. ||3||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਕੀਟੀ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

कहत कबीर सुनहु रे संतहु कीटी परबतु खाइआ ॥

Kahat kabeer sunahu re santtahu keetee parabatu khaaiaa ||

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints - the ant has eaten the mountain.

ਕਛੂਆ ਕਹੈ ਅੰਗਾਰ ਭਿ ਲੋਰਉ ਲੂਕੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਨਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥

कछूआ कहै अंगार भि लोरउ लूकी सबदु सुनाइआ ॥४॥६॥

Kachhooaa kahai anggaar bhi lorau lookee sabadu sunaaiaa ||4||6||

The turtle says, ""I need a burning coal, also."" Listen to this mystery of the Shabad. ||4||6||

ਬਟੂਆ ਏਕੁ ਬਹਤਰਿ ਆਧਾਰੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥

बटूआ एकु बहतरि आधारी एको जिसहि दुआरा ॥

Batooaa eku bahatari aadhaaree eko jisahi duaaraa ||

The body is a bag with seventy-two chambers, and one opening, the Tenth Gate.

ਨਵੈ ਖੰਡ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਮਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਗਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

नवै खंड की प्रिथमी मागै सो जोगी जगि सारा ॥१॥

Navai khandd kee prithamee maagai so jogee jagi saaraa ||1||

He alone is a real Yogi on this earth, who asks for the primal world of the nine regions. ||1||

ਐਸਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

ऐसा जोगी नउ निधि पावै ॥

Aisaa jogee nau nidhi paavai ||

Such a Yogi obtains the nine treasures.

ਤਲ ਕਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੇ ਗਗਨਿ ਚਰਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तल का ब्रहमु ले गगनि चरावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਈ ਸਬਦੁ ਤਾਗਾ ਮਥਿ ਘਾਲੈ ॥

खिंथा गिआन धिआन करि सूई सबदु तागा मथि घालै ॥

Khintthaa giaan dhiaan kari sooee sabadu taagaa mathi ghaalai ||

He makes spiritual wisdom his patched coat, and meditation his needle. He twists the thread of the Word of the Shabad.

ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਰਗਾਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਚਾਲੈ ॥੨॥

पंच ततु की करि मिरगाणी गुर कै मारगि चालै ॥२॥

Pancch tatu kee kari miragaa(nn)ee gur kai maaragi chaalai ||2||

Making the five elements his deer skin to sit on, he walks on the Guru's Path. ||2||

ਦਇਆ ਫਾਹੁਰੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਧੂਈ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥

दइआ फाहुरी काइआ करि धूई द्रिसटि की अगनि जलावै ॥

Daiaa phaahuree kaaiaa kari dhooee drisati kee agani jalaavai ||

He makes compassion his shovel, his body the firewood, and he kindles the fire of divine vision.

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ਲਏ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

तिस का भाउ लए रिद अंतरि चहु जुग ताड़ी लावै ॥३॥

Tis kaa bhaau lae rid anttari chahu jug taa(rr)ee laavai ||3||

He places love within his heart, and he remains in deep meditation throughout the four ages. ||3||

ਸਭ ਜੋਗਤਣ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰਾਨਾ ॥

सभ जोगतण राम नामु है जिस का पिंडु पराना ॥

Sabh jogata(nn) raam naamu hai jis kaa pinddu paraanaa ||

All Yoga is in the Name of the Lord; the body and the breath of life belong to Him.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਨਾ ॥੪॥੭॥

कहु कबीर जे किरपा धारै देइ सचा नीसाना ॥४॥७॥

Kahu kabeer je kirapaa dhaarai dei sachaa neesaanaa ||4||7||

Says Kabeer, if God grants His Grace, He bestows the insignia of Truth. ||4||7||

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤੁਰਕ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਏ ਕਿਨਿ ਏਹ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਈ ॥

हिंदू तुरक कहा ते आए किनि एह राह चलाई ॥

Hinddoo turak kahaa te aae kini eh raah chalaaee ||

Where have the Hindus and Muslims come from? Who put them on their different paths?

ਦਿਲ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਚਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਕਵਾਦੇ ਭਿਸਤ ਦੋਜਕ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥

दिल महि सोचि बिचारि कवादे भिसत दोजक किनि पाई ॥१॥

Dil mahi sochi bichaari kavaade bhisat dojak kini paaee ||1||

Think of this, and contemplate it within your mind, O men of evil intentions. Who will go to heaven and hell? ||1||

ਕਾਜੀ ਤੈ ਕਵਨ ਕਤੇਬ ਬਖਾਨੀ ॥

काजी तै कवन कतेब बखानी ॥

Kaajee tai kavan kateb bakhaanee ||

O Qazi, which book have you read?

ਪੜ੍ਹਤ ਗੁਨਤ ਐਸੇ ਸਭ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पड़्हत गुनत ऐसे सभ मारे किनहूं खबरि न जानी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Pa(rr)ht gunat aise sabh maare kinahoonn khabari na jaanee ||1|| rahaau ||

Such scholars and students have all died, and none of them have discovered the inner meaning. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਕਤਿ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਕਰੀਐ ਮੈ ਨ ਬਦਉਗਾ ਭਾਈ ॥

सकति सनेहु करि सुंनति करीऐ मै न बदउगा भाई ॥

Sakati sanehu kari sunnati kareeai mai na badaugaa bhaaee ||

Because of the love of woman, circumcision is done; I don't believe in it, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਜਉ ਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਮੋਹਿ ਤੁਰਕੁ ਕਰੈਗਾ ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੨॥

जउ रे खुदाइ मोहि तुरकु करैगा आपन ही कटि जाई ॥२॥

Jau re khudaai mohi turaku karaigaa aapan hee kati jaaee ||2||

If God wished me to be a Muslim, it would be cut off by itself. ||2||

ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਕੀਏ ਤੁਰਕੁ ਜੇ ਹੋਇਗਾ ਅਉਰਤ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੀਐ ॥

सुंनति कीए तुरकु जे होइगा अउरत का किआ करीऐ ॥

Sunnati keee turaku je hoigaa aurat kaa kiaa kareeai ||

If circumcision makes one a Muslim, then what about a woman?

ਅਰਧ ਸਰੀਰੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਹੀ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੩॥

अरध सरीरी नारि न छोडै ता ते हिंदू ही रहीऐ ॥३॥

Aradh sareeree naari na chhodai taa te hinddoo hee raheeai ||3||

She is the other half of a man's body, and she does not leave him, so he remains a Hindu. ||3||

ਛਾਡਿ ਕਤੇਬ ਰਾਮੁ ਭਜੁ ਬਉਰੇ ਜੁਲਮ ਕਰਤ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

छाडि कतेब रामु भजु बउरे जुलम करत है भारी ॥

Chhaadi kateb raamu bhaju baure julam karat hai bhaaree ||

Give up your holy books, and remember the Lord, you fool, and stop oppressing others so badly.

ਕਬੀਰੈ ਪਕਰੀ ਟੇਕ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਤੁਰਕ ਰਹੇ ਪਚਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੮॥

कबीरै पकरी टेक राम की तुरक रहे पचिहारी ॥४॥८॥

Kabeerai pakaree tek raam kee turak rahe pachihaaree ||4||8||

Kabeer has grasped hold of the Lord's Support, and the Muslims have utterly failed. ||4||8||

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਤੇਲੁ ਦੀਵੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਤੀ ਤਬ ਸੂਝੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

जब लगु तेलु दीवे मुखि बाती तब सूझै सभु कोई ॥

Jab lagu telu deeve mukhi baatee tab soojhai sabhu koee ||

As long as the oil and the wick are in the lamp, everything is illuminated.

ਤੇਲ ਜਲੇ ਬਾਤੀ ਠਹਰਾਨੀ ਸੂੰਨਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

तेल जले बाती ठहरानी सूंना मंदरु होई ॥१॥

Tel jale baatee thaharaanee soonnaa manddaru hoee ||1||

But when the oil is burnt, the wick goes out, and the mansion becomes desolate. ||1||

ਰੇ ਬਉਰੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

रे बउरे तुहि घरी न राखै कोई ॥

Re baure tuhi gharee na raakhai koee ||

O mad-man, no one will keep you, for even a moment.

ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तूं राम नामु जपि सोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Toonn raam naamu japi soee ||1|| rahaau ||

Meditate on the Name of that Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕਾ ਕੀ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਹੁ ਕਾ ਕੋ ਕਵਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਜੋਈ ॥

का की मात पिता कहु का को कवन पुरख की जोई ॥

Kaa kee maat pitaa kahu kaa ko kavan purakh kee joee ||

Tell me, whose mother is that, whose father is that, and which man has a wife?

ਘਟ ਫੂਟੇ ਕੋਊ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੂਛੈ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥

घट फूटे कोऊ बात न पूछै काढहु काढहु होई ॥२॥

Ghat phoote kou baat na poochhai kaadhahu kaadhahu hoee ||2||

When the pitcher of the body breaks, no one cares for you at all. Everyone says, ""Take him away, take him away!"" ||2||

ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਰੋਵੈ ਖਟੀਆ ਲੇ ਗਏ ਭਾਈ ॥

देहुरी बैठी माता रोवै खटीआ ले गए भाई ॥

Dehuree baithee maataa rovai khateeaa le gae bhaaee ||

Sitting on the threshold, his mother cries, and his brothers take away the coffin.

ਲਟ ਛਿਟਕਾਏ ਤਿਰੀਆ ਰੋਵੈ ਹੰਸੁ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥

लट छिटकाए तिरीआ रोवै हंसु इकेला जाई ॥३॥

Lat chhitakaae tireeaa rovai hanssu ikelaa jaaee ||3||

Taking down her hair, his wife cries out in sorrow, and the swan-soul departs all alone. ||3||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਭੈ ਸਾਗਰ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥

कहत कबीर सुनहु रे संतहु भै सागर कै ताई ॥

Kahat kabeer sunahu re santtahu bhai saagar kai taaee ||

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints, about the terrifying world-ocean.

ਇਸੁ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੁਲਮੁ ਹੋਤ ਹੈ ਜਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਹਟੈ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥੪॥੯॥

इसु बंदे सिरि जुलमु होत है जमु नही हटै गुसाई ॥४॥९॥

Isu bandde siri julamu hot hai jamu nahee hatai gusaaee ||4||9||

This human suffers torture and the Messenger of Death will not leave him alone, O Lord of the World. ||4||9||

Aasaa Of Kabeer Jee, Chau-Padas, Ik-Tukas:

ਸਨਕ ਸਨੰਦ ਅੰਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

सनक सनंद अंतु नही पाइआ ॥

Sanak sanandd anttu nahee paaiaa ||

Sanak and Sanand, the sons of Brahma, could not find the Lord's limits.

ਬੇਦ ਪੜੇ ਪੜਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

बेद पड़े पड़ि ब्रहमे जनमु गवाइआ ॥१॥

Bed pa(rr)e pa(rr)i brhame janamu gavaaiaa ||1||

Brahma wasted his life away, continually reading the Vedas. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਬਿਲੋਵਨਾ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥

हरि का बिलोवना बिलोवहु मेरे भाई ॥

Hari kaa bilovanaa bilovahu mere bhaaee ||

Churn the churn of the Lord, O my Siblings of Destiny.

ਸਹਜਿ ਬਿਲੋਵਹੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सहजि बिलोवहु जैसे ततु न जाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sahaji bilovahu jaise tatu na jaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

Churn it steadily, so that the essence, the butter, may not be lost. ||1|| Pause ||

ਤਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਬਿਲੋਈ ॥

तनु करि मटुकी मन माहि बिलोई ॥

Tanu kari matukee man maahi biloee ||

Make your body the churning jar, and use the stick of your mind to churn it.

ਇਸੁ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੰਜੋਈ ॥੨॥

इसु मटुकी महि सबदु संजोई ॥२॥

Isu matukee mahi sabadu sanjjoee ||2||

Gather the curds of the Word of the Shabad. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਬਿਲੋਵਨਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

हरि का बिलोवना मन का बीचारा ॥

Hari kaa bilovanaa man kaa beechaaraa ||

The churning of the Lord is to reflect upon Him within your mind.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

गुर प्रसादि पावै अम्रित धारा ॥३॥

Gur prsaadi paavai ammmrit dhaaraa ||3||

By Guru's Grace, the Ambrosial Nectar flows into us. ||3||

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਮੀਂਰਾ ॥

कहु कबीर नदरि करे जे मींरा ॥

Kahu kabeer nadari kare je meenraa ||

Says Kabeer, if the Lord, our King casts His Glance of Grace,

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਗਿ ਉਤਰੇ ਤੀਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੦॥

राम नाम लगि उतरे तीरा ॥४॥१॥१०॥

Raam naam lagi utare teeraa ||4||1||10||

One is carried across to the other side, holding fast to the Lord's Name. ||4||1||10||

ਬਾਤੀ ਸੂਕੀ ਤੇਲੁ ਨਿਖੂਟਾ ॥

बाती सूकी तेलु निखूटा ॥

Baatee sookee telu nikhootaa ||

The wick has dried up, and the oil is exhausted.

ਮੰਦਲੁ ਨ ਬਾਜੈ ਨਟੁ ਪੈ ਸੂਤਾ ॥੧॥

मंदलु न बाजै नटु पै सूता ॥१॥

Manddalu na baajai natu pai sootaa ||1||

The drum does not sound, and the actor has gone to sleep. ||1||

ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਸਿਓ ਧੂੰਆ ॥

बुझि गई अगनि न निकसिओ धूंआ ॥

Bujhi gaee agani na nikasio dhoonnaa ||

The fire has gone out, and no smoke is produced.

ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਏਕੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

रवि रहिआ एकु अवरु नही दूआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ravi rahiaa eku avaru nahee dooaa ||1|| rahaau ||

The One Lord is pervading and permeating everywhere; there is no other second. ||1|| Pause ||

ਟੂਟੀ ਤੰਤੁ ਨ ਬਜੈ ਰਬਾਬੁ ॥

टूटी तंतु न बजै रबाबु ॥

Tootee tanttu na bajai rabaabu ||

The string has broken, and the guitar makes no sound.

ਭੂਲਿ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਕਾਜੁ ॥੨॥

भूलि बिगारिओ अपना काजु ॥२॥

Bhooli bigaario apanaa kaaju ||2||

He mistakenly ruins his own affairs. ||2||

ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਕਹਨੁ ਕਹਾਵਨੁ ॥

कथनी बदनी कहनु कहावनु ॥

Kathanee badanee kahanu kahaavanu ||

All preaching, ranting and raving, and arguing,

ਸਮਝਿ ਪਰੀ ਤਉ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਗਾਵਨੁ ॥੩॥

समझि परी तउ बिसरिओ गावनु ॥३॥

Samajhi paree tau bisario gaavanu ||3||

is forgotton when one comes to understand. ||3||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਪੰਚ ਜੋ ਚੂਰੇ ॥

कहत कबीर पंच जो चूरे ॥

Kahat kabeer pancch jo choore ||

Says Kabeer, who conquer the five demons of the body passions,

ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਦੂਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੧॥

तिन ते नाहि परम पदु दूरे ॥४॥२॥११॥

Tin te naahi param padu doore ||4||2||11||

for them the state of supreme dignity is never far. ||4||2||11||

ਸੁਤੁ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਕਰਤ ਹੈ ਜੇਤੇ ॥

सुतु अपराध करत है जेते ॥

Sutu aparaadh karat hai jete ||

As many mistakes as the son commits,

ਜਨਨੀ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਰਾਖਸਿ ਤੇਤੇ ॥੧॥

जननी चीति न राखसि तेते ॥१॥

Jananee cheeti na raakhasi tete ||1||

His mother does not hold them against him in her mind. ||1||

ਰਾਮਈਆ ਹਉ ਬਾਰਿਕੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥

रामईआ हउ बारिकु तेरा ॥

Raamaeeaa hau baariku teraa ||

O Lord, I am Your child.

ਕਾਹੇ ਨ ਖੰਡਸਿ ਅਵਗਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

काहे न खंडसि अवगनु मेरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kaahe na khanddasi avaganu meraa ||1|| rahaau ||

Why not destroy my sins? ||1|| Pause ||

ਜੇ ਅਤਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਪ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥

जे अति क्रोप करे करि धाइआ ॥

Je ati krop kare kari dhaaiaa ||

If the son, in anger, runs away,

ਤਾ ਭੀ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਰਾਖਸਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

ता भी चीति न राखसि माइआ ॥२॥

Taa bhee cheeti na raakhasi maaiaa ||2||

Even then, his mother does not hold it against him in her mind. ||2||

ਚਿੰਤ ਭਵਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਿਓ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥

चिंत भवनि मनु परिओ हमारा ॥

Chintt bhavani manu pario hamaaraa ||

My mind has fallen into the whirlpool of anxiety.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

नाम बिना कैसे उतरसि पारा ॥३॥

Naam binaa kaise utarasi paaraa ||3||

Without the Naam, how can I cross over to the other side? ||3||

ਦੇਹਿ ਬਿਮਲ ਮਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥

देहि बिमल मति सदा सरीरा ॥

Dehi bimal mati sadaa sareeraa ||

Please, bless my body with pure and lasting understanding, Lord;

ਸਹਜਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਗੁਨ ਰਵੈ ਕਬੀਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੨॥

सहजि सहजि गुन रवै कबीरा ॥४॥३॥१२॥

Sahaji sahaji gun ravai kabeeraa ||4||3||12||

In peace and poise, Kabeer chants the Praises of the Lord. ||4||3||12||

My pilgrimage to Mecca is on the banks of the Gomati River;

ਜਹਾ ਬਸਹਿ ਪੀਤੰਬਰ ਪੀਰ ॥੧॥

जहा बसहि पीत्मबर पीर ॥१॥

Jahaa basahi peetambbar peer ||1||

The spiritual teacher in his yellow robes dwells there. ||1||

ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੂਬੁ ਗਾਵਤਾ ਹੈ ॥

वाहु वाहु किआ खूबु गावता है ॥

Vaahu vaahu kiaa khoobu gaavataa hai ||

Waaho! Waaho! Hail! Hail! How wondrously he sings.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि का नामु मेरै मनि भावता है ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari kaa naamu merai mani bhaavataa hai ||1|| rahaau ||

The Name of the Lord is pleasing to my mind. ||1|| Pause ||

ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਕਰਹਿ ਖਵਾਸੀ ॥

नारद सारद करहि खवासी ॥

Naarad saarad karahi khavaasee ||

Naarada the sage, and Shaarada the goddess of knowledge, serve the Lord.

ਪਾਸਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਬੀਬੀ ਕਵਲਾ ਦਾਸੀ ॥੨॥

पासि बैठी बीबी कवला दासी ॥२॥

Paasi baithee beebee kavalaa daasee ||2||

The goddess Lakhshmi sits by Him as His slave. ||2||

ਕੰਠੇ ਮਾਲਾ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਾਮੁ ॥

कंठे माला जिहवा रामु ॥

Kantthe maalaa jihavaa raamu ||

The mala is around my neck, and the Lord's Name is upon my tongue.

ਸਹੰਸ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਕਰਉ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥੩॥

सहंस नामु लै लै करउ सलामु ॥३॥

Sahanss naamu lai lai karau salaamu ||3||

I repeat the Naam, the Name of the Lord, a thousand times, and bow in reverence to Him. ||3||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਉ ॥

कहत कबीर राम गुन गावउ ॥

Kahat kabeer raam gun gaavau ||

Says Kabeer, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord;

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤੁਰਕ ਦੋਊ ਸਮਝਾਵਉ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੩॥

हिंदू तुरक दोऊ समझावउ ॥४॥४॥१३॥

Hinddoo turak dou samajhaavau ||4||4||13||

I teach both Hindus and Muslims. ||4||4||13||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਪਾਤੀ ਤੋਰੈ ਮਾਲਿਨੀ ਪਾਤੀ ਪਾਤੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

पाती तोरै मालिनी पाती पाती जीउ ॥

Paatee torai maalinee paatee paatee jeeu ||

You tear off the leaves, O gardener, but in each and every leaf, there is life.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਹਨ ਕਉ ਪਾਤੀ ਤੋਰੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਹਨ ਨਿਰਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

जिसु पाहन कउ पाती तोरै सो पाहन निरजीउ ॥१॥

Jisu paahan kau paatee torai so paahan nirajeeu ||1||

That stone idol, for which you tear off those leaves - that stone idol is lifeless. ||1||

ਭੂਲੀ ਮਾਲਨੀ ਹੈ ਏਉ ॥

भूली मालनी है एउ ॥

Bhoolee maalanee hai eu ||

In this, you are mistaken, O gardener.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਗਤਾ ਹੈ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सतिगुरु जागता है देउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Satiguru jaagataa hai deu ||1|| rahaau ||

The True Guru is the Living Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਾਤੀ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਡਾਰੀ ਫੂਲ ਸੰਕਰਦੇਉ ॥

ब्रहमु पाती बिसनु डारी फूल संकरदेउ ॥

Brhamu paatee bisanu daaree phool sankkaradeu ||

Brahma is in the leaves, Vishnu is in the branches, and Shiva is in the flowers.

ਤੀਨਿ ਦੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਤਖਿ ਤੋਰਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਉ ॥੨॥

तीनि देव प्रतखि तोरहि करहि किस की सेउ ॥२॥

Teeni dev prtakhi torahi karahi kis kee seu ||2||

When you break these three gods, whose service are you performing? ||2||

ਪਾਖਾਨ ਗਢਿ ਕੈ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਕੀਨੑੀ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਛਾਤੀ ਪਾਉ ॥

पाखान गढि कै मूरति कीन्ही दे कै छाती पाउ ॥

Paakhaan gadhi kai moorati keenhee de kai chhaatee paau ||

The sculptor carves the stone and fashions it into an idol, placing his feet upon its chest.

ਜੇ ਏਹ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਹੈ ਤਉ ਗੜ੍ਹਣਹਾਰੇ ਖਾਉ ॥੩॥

जे एह मूरति साची है तउ गड़्हणहारे खाउ ॥३॥

Je eh moorati saachee hai tau ga(rr)h(nn)ahaare khaau ||3||

If this stone god was true, it would devour the sculptor for this! ||3||

ਭਾਤੁ ਪਹਿਤਿ ਅਰੁ ਲਾਪਸੀ ਕਰਕਰਾ ਕਾਸਾਰੁ ॥

भातु पहिति अरु लापसी करकरा कासारु ॥

Bhaatu pahiti aru laapasee karakaraa kaasaaru ||

Rice and beans, candies, cakes and cookies

ਭੋਗਨਹਾਰੇ ਭੋਗਿਆ ਇਸੁ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਕੇ ਮੁਖ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

भोगनहारे भोगिआ इसु मूरति के मुख छारु ॥४॥

Bhoganahaare bhogiaa isu moorati ke mukh chhaaru ||4||

- the priest enjoys these, while he puts ashes into the mouth of the idol. ||4||

ਮਾਲਿਨਿ ਭੂਲੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ਹਮ ਭੁਲਾਨੇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

मालिनि भूली जगु भुलाना हम भुलाने नाहि ॥

Maalini bhoolee jagu bhulaanaa ham bhulaane naahi ||

The gardener is mistaken, and the world is mistaken, but I am not mistaken.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਖੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥੫॥੧॥੧੪॥

कहु कबीर हम राम राखे क्रिपा करि हरि राइ ॥५॥१॥१४॥

Kahu kabeer ham raam raakhe kripaa kari hari raai ||5||1||14||

Says Kabeer, the Lord preserves me; the Lord, my King, has showered His Blessings upon me. ||5||1||14||

ਬਾਰਹ ਬਰਸ ਬਾਲਪਨ ਬੀਤੇ ਬੀਸ ਬਰਸ ਕਛੁ ਤਪੁ ਨ ਕੀਓ ॥

बारह बरस बालपन बीते बीस बरस कछु तपु न कीओ ॥

Baarah baras baalapan beete bees baras kachhu tapu na keeo ||

Twelve years pass in childhood, and for another twenty years, he does not practice self-discipline and austerity.

ਤੀਸ ਬਰਸ ਕਛੁ ਦੇਵ ਨ ਪੂਜਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਓ ॥੧॥

तीस बरस कछु देव न पूजा फिरि पछुताना बिरधि भइओ ॥१॥

Tees baras kachhu dev na poojaa phiri pachhutaanaa biradhi bhaio ||1||

For another thirty years, he does not worship God in any way, and then, when he is old, he repents and regrets. ||1||

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਇਓ ॥

मेरी मेरी करते जनमु गइओ ॥

Meree meree karate janamu gaio ||

His life wastes away as he cries out, ""Mine, mine!""

ਸਾਇਰੁ ਸੋਖਿ ਭੁਜੰ ਬਲਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साइरु सोखि भुजं बलइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saairu sokhi bhujann balaio ||1|| rahaau ||

The pool of his power has dried up. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸੂਕੇ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਪਾਲਿ ਬੰਧਾਵੈ ਲੂਣੈ ਖੇਤਿ ਹਥ ਵਾਰਿ ਕਰੈ ॥

सूके सरवरि पालि बंधावै लूणै खेति हथ वारि करै ॥

Sooke saravari paali banddhaavai loo(nn)ai kheti hath vaari karai ||

He makes a dam around the dried-up pool, and with his hands, he makes a fence around the harvested field.

ਆਇਓ ਚੋਰੁ ਤੁਰੰਤਹ ਲੇ ਗਇਓ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਖਤ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਫਿਰੈ ॥੨॥

आइओ चोरु तुरंतह ले गइओ मेरी राखत मुगधु फिरै ॥२॥

Aaio choru turanttah le gaio meree raakhat mugadhu phirai ||2||

When the thief of Death comes, he quickly carries away what the fool had tried to preserve as his own. ||2||

ਚਰਨ ਸੀਸੁ ਕਰ ਕੰਪਨ ਲਾਗੇ ਨੈਨੀ ਨੀਰੁ ਅਸਾਰ ਬਹੈ ॥

चरन सीसु कर क्मपन लागे नैनी नीरु असार बहै ॥

Charan seesu kar kamppan laage nainee neeru asaar bahai ||

His feet and head and hands begin to tremble, and the tears flow copiously from his eyes.

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਤਬ ਰੇ ਧਰਮ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕਰੈ ॥੩॥

जिहवा बचनु सुधु नही निकसै तब रे धरम की आस करै ॥३॥

Jihavaa bachanu sudhu nahee nikasai tab re dharam kee aas karai ||3||

His tongue has not spoken the correct words, but now, he hopes to practice religion! ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੀਓ ॥

हरि जीउ क्रिपा करै लिव लावै लाहा हरि हरि नामु लीओ ॥

Hari jeeu kripaa karai liv laavai laahaa hari hari naamu leeo ||

If the Dear Lord shows His Mercy, one enshrines love for Him, and obtains the Profit of the Lord's Name.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਅੰਤੇ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲਿਓ ॥੪॥

गुर परसादी हरि धनु पाइओ अंते चलदिआ नालि चलिओ ॥४॥

Gur parasaadee hari dhanu paaio antte chaladiaa naali chalio ||4||

By Guru's Grace, he receives the wealth of the Lord's Name, which alone shall go with him, when he departs in the end. ||4||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਛੂਐ ਲੈ ਨ ਗਇਓ ॥

कहत कबीर सुनहु रे संतहु अनु धनु कछूऐ लै न गइओ ॥

Kahat kabeer sunahu re santtahu anu dhanu kachhooai lai na gaio ||

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints - he shall not take any other wealth with him.

ਆਈ ਤਲਬ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੰਦਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲਿਓ ॥੫॥੨॥੧੫॥

आई तलब गोपाल राइ की माइआ मंदर छोडि चलिओ ॥५॥२॥१५॥

Aaee talab gopaal raai kee maaiaa manddar chhodi chalio ||5||2||15||

When the summons comes from the King, the Lord of the Universe, the mortal departs, leaving behind his wealth and mansions. ||5||2||15||

ਕਾਹੂ ਦੀਨੑੇ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਪਲਘ ਨਿਵਾਰਾ ॥

काहू दीन्हे पाट पट्मबर काहू पलघ निवारा ॥

Kaahoo deenhe paat patambbar kaahoo palagh nivaaraa ||

To some, the Lord has given silks and satins, and to some, beds decorated with cotton ribbons.

ਕਾਹੂ ਗਰੀ ਗੋਦਰੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਖਾਨ ਪਰਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

काहू गरी गोदरी नाही काहू खान परारा ॥१॥

Kaahoo garee godaree naahee kaahoo khaan paraaraa ||1||

Some do not even have a poor patched coat, and some live in thatched huts. ||1||

ਅਹਿਰਖ ਵਾਦੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਰੇ ਮਨ ॥

अहिरख वादु न कीजै रे मन ॥

Ahirakh vaadu na keejai re man ||

Do not indulge in envy and bickering, O my mind.

ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਜੈ ਰੇ ਮਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सुक्रितु करि करि लीजै रे मन ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sukritu kari kari leejai re man ||1|| rahaau ||

By continually doing good deeds, these are obtained, O my mind. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੈ ਏਕ ਜੁ ਮਾਟੀ ਗੂੰਧੀ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਾਨੀ ਲਾਈ ॥

कुम्हारै एक जु माटी गूंधी बहु बिधि बानी लाई ॥

Kumhaarai ek ju maatee goonddhee bahu bidhi baanee laaee ||

The potter works the same clay, and colors the pots in different ways.

ਕਾਹੂ ਮਹਿ ਮੋਤੀ ਮੁਕਤਾਹਲ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥੨॥

काहू महि मोती मुकताहल काहू बिआधि लगाई ॥२॥

Kaahoo mahi motee mukataahal kaahoo biaadhi lagaaee ||2||

Into some, he sets pearls, while to others, he attaches filth. ||2||

ਸੂਮਹਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਖਨ ਕਉ ਦੀਆ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਕਹੈ ਧਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥

सूमहि धनु राखन कउ दीआ मुगधु कहै धनु मेरा ॥

Soomahi dhanu raakhan kau deeaa mugadhu kahai dhanu meraa ||

God gave wealth to the miser for him to preserve, but the fool calls it his own.

ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਮੂੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥੩॥

जम का डंडु मूंड महि लागै खिन महि करै निबेरा ॥३॥

Jam kaa danddu moondd mahi laagai khin mahi karai niberaa ||3||

When the Messenger of Death strikes him with his club, in an instant, everything is settled. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਊਤਮੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸਦਾਵੈ ਆਗਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥

हरि जनु ऊतमु भगतु सदावै आगिआ मनि सुखु पाई ॥

Hari janu utamu bhagatu sadaavai aagiaa mani sukhu paaee ||

The Lord's humble servant is called the most exalted Saint; he obeys the Command of the Lord's Order, and obtains peace.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥੪॥

जो तिसु भावै सति करि मानै भाणा मंनि वसाई ॥४॥

Jo tisu bhaavai sati kari maanai bhaa(nn)aa manni vasaaee ||4||

Whatever is pleasing to the Lord, he accepts as True; he enshrines the Lord's Will within his mind. ||4||

ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਝੂਠੀ ॥

कहै कबीरु सुनहु रे संतहु मेरी मेरी झूठी ॥

Kahai kabeeru sunahu re santtahu meree meree jhoothee ||

Says Kabeer, listen, O Saints - it is false to call out, ""Mine, mine.""

ਚਿਰਗਟ ਫਾਰਿ ਚਟਾਰਾ ਲੈ ਗਇਓ ਤਰੀ ਤਾਗਰੀ ਛੂਟੀ ॥੫॥੩॥੧੬॥

चिरगट फारि चटारा लै गइओ तरी तागरी छूटी ॥५॥३॥१६॥

Chiragat phaari chataaraa lai gaio taree taagaree chhootee ||5||3||16||

Breaking the bird cage, death takes the bird away, and only the torn threads remain. ||5||3||16||

ਹਮ ਮਸਕੀਨ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਬੰਦੇ ਤੁਮ ਰਾਜਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

हम मसकीन खुदाई बंदे तुम राजसु मनि भावै ॥

Ham masakeen khudaaee bandde tum raajasu mani bhaavai ||

I am Your humble servant, Lord; Your Praises are pleasing to my mind.

ਅਲਹ ਅਵਲਿ ਦੀਨ ਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜੋਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

अलह अवलि दीन को साहिबु जोरु नही फुरमावै ॥१॥

Alah avali deen ko saahibu joru nahee phuramaavai ||1||

The Lord, the Primal Being, the Master of the poor, does not ordain that they should be oppressed. ||1||

ਕਾਜੀ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਬਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

काजी बोलिआ बनि नही आवै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kaajee boliaa bani nahee aavai ||1|| rahaau ||

O Qazi, it is not right to speak before Him. ||1|| Pause ||

ਰੋਜਾ ਧਰੈ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਗੁਜਾਰੈ ਕਲਮਾ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

रोजा धरै निवाज गुजारै कलमा भिसति न होई ॥

Rojaa dharai nivaaj gujaarai kalamaa bhisati na hoee ||

Keeping your fasts, reciting your prayers, and reading the Kalma, the Islamic creed, shall not take you to paradise.

ਸਤਰਿ ਕਾਬਾ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੨॥

सतरि काबा घट ही भीतरि जे करि जानै कोई ॥२॥

Satari kaabaa ghat hee bheetari je kari jaanai koee ||2||

The Temple of Mecca is hidden within your mind, if you only knew it. ||2||

ਨਿਵਾਜ ਸੋਈ ਜੋ ਨਿਆਉ ਬਿਚਾਰੈ ਕਲਮਾ ਅਕਲਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

निवाज सोई जो निआउ बिचारै कलमा अकलहि जानै ॥

Nivaaj soee jo niaau bichaarai kalamaa akalahi jaanai ||

That should be your prayer, to administer justice. Let your Kalma be the knowledge of the unknowable Lord.

ਪਾਚਹੁ ਮੁਸਿ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਤਬ ਤਉ ਦੀਨੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥੩॥

पाचहु मुसि मुसला बिछावै तब तउ दीनु पछानै ॥३॥

Paachahu musi musalaa bichhaavai tab tau deenu pachhaanai ||3||

Spread your prayer mat by conquering your five desires, and you shall recognize the true religion. ||3||

ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿ ਤਰਸ ਕਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਫੀਕੀ ॥

खसमु पछानि तरस करि जीअ महि मारि मणी करि फीकी ॥

Khasamu pachhaani taras kari jeea mahi maari ma(nn)ee kari pheekee ||

Recognize Your Lord and Master, and fear Him within your heart; conquer your egotism, and make it worthless.

ਆਪੁ ਜਨਾਇ ਅਵਰ ਕਉ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਬ ਹੋਇ ਭਿਸਤ ਸਰੀਕੀ ॥੪॥

आपु जनाइ अवर कउ जानै तब होइ भिसत सरीकी ॥४॥

Aapu janaai avar kau jaanai tab hoi bhisat sareekee ||4||

As you see yourself, see others as well; only then will you become a partner in heaven. ||4||

ਮਾਟੀ ਏਕ ਭੇਖ ਧਰਿ ਨਾਨਾ ਤਾ ਮਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥

माटी एक भेख धरि नाना ता महि ब्रहमु पछाना ॥

Maatee ek bhekh dhari naanaa taa mahi brhamu pachhaanaa ||

The clay is one, but it has taken many forms; I recognize the One Lord within them all.

ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਭਿਸਤ ਛੋਡਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਜਕ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਾ ॥੫॥੪॥੧੭॥

कहै कबीरा भिसत छोडि करि दोजक सिउ मनु माना ॥५॥४॥१७॥

Kahai kabeeraa bhisat chhodi kari dojak siu manu maanaa ||5||4||17||

Says Kabeer, I have abandoned paradise, and reconciled my mind to hell. ||5||4||17||

ਗਗਨ ਨਗਰਿ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨ ਬਰਖੈ ਨਾਦੁ ਕਹਾ ਜੁ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥

गगन नगरि इक बूंद न बरखै नादु कहा जु समाना ॥

Gagan nagari ik boondd na barakhai naadu kahaa ju samaanaa ||

From the city of the Tenth Gate, the sky of the mind, not even a drop rains down. Where is the music of the sound current of the Naad, which was contained in it?

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ ਮਾਧੋ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸੁ ਲੇ ਸਿਧਾਨਾ ॥੧॥

पारब्रहम परमेसुर माधो परम हंसु ले सिधाना ॥१॥

Paarabrham paramesur maadho param hanssu le sidhaanaa ||1||

The Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, the Master of wealth has taken away the Supreme Soul. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲਤੇ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਗਏ ਦੇਹੀ ਕੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹਤੇ ॥

बाबा बोलते ते कहा गए देही के संगि रहते ॥

Baabaa bolate te kahaa gae dehee ke sanggi rahate ||

O Father, tell me: where has it gone? It used to dwell within the body,

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਜੋ ਨਿਰਤੇ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਥਾ ਬਾਰਤਾ ਕਹਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सुरति माहि जो निरते करते कथा बारता कहते ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Surati maahi jo nirate karate kathaa baarataa kahate ||1|| rahaau ||

And dance in the mind, teaching and speaking. ||1|| Pause ||

ਬਜਾਵਨਹਾਰੋ ਕਹਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਕੀਨੑਾ ॥

बजावनहारो कहा गइओ जिनि इहु मंदरु कीन्हा ॥

Bajaavanahaaro kahaa gaio jini ihu manddaru keenhaa ||

Where has the player gone - he who made this temple his own?

ਸਾਖੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਖਿੰਚਿ ਤੇਜੁ ਸਭੁ ਲੀਨੑਾ ॥੨॥

साखी सबदु सुरति नही उपजै खिंचि तेजु सभु लीन्हा ॥२॥

Saakhee sabadu surati nahee upajai khincchi teju sabhu leenhaa ||2||

No story, word or understanding is produced; the Lord has drained off all the power. ||2||

ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਬਿਕਲ ਭਏ ਸੰਗਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਕਾ ਬਲੁ ਥਾਕਾ ॥

स्रवनन बिकल भए संगि तेरे इंद्री का बलु थाका ॥

Srvanan bikal bhae sanggi tere ianddree kaa balu thaakaa ||

The ears, your companions, have gone deaf, and the power of your organs is exhausted.

ਚਰਨ ਰਹੇ ਕਰ ਢਰਕਿ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਨ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਬਾਤਾ ॥੩॥

चरन रहे कर ढरकि परे है मुखहु न निकसै बाता ॥३॥

Charan rahe kar dharaki pare hai mukhahu na nikasai baataa ||3||

Your feet have failed, your hands have gone limp, and no words issue forth from your mouth. ||3||

ਥਾਕੇ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤ ਸਭ ਤਸਕਰ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਤੇ ॥

थाके पंच दूत सभ तसकर आप आपणै भ्रमते ॥

Thaake pancch doot sabh tasakar aap aapa(nn)ai bhrmate ||

Having grown weary, the five enemies and all the thieves have wandered away according to their own will.

ਥਾਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਉਰੁ ਥਾਕਾ ਤੇਜੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਧਰਿ ਰਮਤੇ ॥੪॥

थाका मनु कुंचर उरु थाका तेजु सूतु धरि रमते ॥४॥

Thaakaa manu kuncchar uru thaakaa teju sootu dhari ramate ||4||

The elephant of the mind has grown weary, and the heart has grown weary as well; through its power, it used to pull the strings. ||4||

ਮਿਰਤਕ ਭਏ ਦਸੈ ਬੰਦ ਛੂਟੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਭਾਈ ਸਭ ਛੋਰੇ ॥

मिरतक भए दसै बंद छूटे मित्र भाई सभ छोरे ॥

Miratak bhae dasai bandd chhoote mitr bhaaee sabh chhore ||

He is dead, and the bonds of the ten gates are opened; he has left all his friends and brothers.

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਜੀਵਤ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਰੇ ॥੫॥੫॥੧੮॥

कहत कबीरा जो हरि धिआवै जीवत बंधन तोरे ॥५॥५॥१८॥

Kahat kabeeraa jo hari dhiaavai jeevat banddhan tore ||5||5||18||

Says Kabeer, one who meditates on the Lord, breaks his bonds, even while yet alive. ||5||5||18||

Aasaa, 4 Ik-Tukas:

ਸਰਪਨੀ ਤੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਲੀਆ ॥

सरपनी ते ऊपरि नही बलीआ ॥

Sarapanee te upari nahee baleeaa ||

No one is more powerful than the she-serpent Maya,

ਜਿਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹਾਦੇਉ ਛਲੀਆ ॥੧॥

जिनि ब्रहमा बिसनु महादेउ छलीआ ॥१॥

Jini brhamaa bisanu mahaadeu chhaleeaa ||1||

Who deceived even Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. ||1||

ਮਾਰੁ ਮਾਰੁ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲਿ ਪੈਠੀ ॥

मारु मारु स्रपनी निरमल जलि पैठी ॥

Maaru maaru srpanee niramal jali paithee ||

Having bitten and struck them down, she now sits in the immaculate waters.

ਜਿਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਡਸੀਅਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਡੀਠੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिनि त्रिभवणु डसीअले गुर प्रसादि डीठी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jini tribhava(nn)u daseeale gur prsaadi deethee ||1|| rahaau ||

By Guru's Grace, I have seen her, who has bitten the three worlds. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥

स्रपनी स्रपनी किआ कहहु भाई ॥

Srpanee srpanee kiaa kahahu bhaaee ||

O Siblings of Destiny, why is she called a she-serpent?

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਖਾਈ ॥੨॥

जिनि साचु पछानिआ तिनि स्रपनी खाई ॥२॥

Jini saachu pachhaaniaa tini srpanee khaaee ||2||

One who realizes the True Lord, devours the she-serpent. ||2||

ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਤੇ ਆਨ ਛੂਛ ਨਹੀ ਅਵਰਾ ॥

स्रपनी ते आन छूछ नही अवरा ॥

Srpanee te aan chhoochh nahee avaraa ||

No one else is more frivolous than this she-serpent.

ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਜੀਤੀ ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਜਮਰਾ ॥੩॥

स्रपनी जीती कहा करै जमरा ॥३॥

Srpanee jeetee kahaa karai jamaraa ||3||

When the she-serpent is overcome, what can the Messengers of the King of Death do? ||3||

ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰਪਨੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

इह स्रपनी ता की कीती होई ॥

Ih srpanee taa kee keetee hoee ||

This she-serpent is created by Him.

ਬਲੁ ਅਬਲੁ ਕਿਆ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥

बलु अबलु किआ इस ते होई ॥४॥

Balu abalu kiaa is te hoee ||4||

What power or weakness does she have by herself? ||4||

ਇਹ ਬਸਤੀ ਤਾ ਬਸਤ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥

इह बसती ता बसत सरीरा ॥

Ih basatee taa basat sareeraa ||

If she abides with the mortal, then his soul abides in his body.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਤਰੇ ਕਬੀਰਾ ॥੫॥੬॥੧੯॥

गुर प्रसादि सहजि तरे कबीरा ॥५॥६॥१९॥

Gur prsaadi sahaji tare kabeeraa ||5||6||19||

By Guru's Grace, Kabeer has easily crossed over. ||5||6||19||

ਕਹਾ ਸੁਆਨ ਕਉ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਏ ॥

कहा सुआन कउ सिम्रिति सुनाए ॥

Kahaa suaan kau simriti sunaae ||

Why bother to read the Simritees to a dog?

ਕਹਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥

कहा साकत पहि हरि गुन गाए ॥१॥

Kahaa saakat pahi hari gun gaae ||1||

Why bother to sing the Lord's Praises to the faithless cynic? ||1||

ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਮੇ ਰਮਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥

राम राम राम रमे रमि रहीऐ ॥

Raam raam raam rame rami raheeai ||

Remain absorbed in the Lord's Name, Raam, Raam, Raam.

ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਭੂਲਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साकत सिउ भूलि नही कहीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saakat siu bhooli nahee kaheeai ||1|| rahaau ||

Do not bother to speak of it to the faithless cynic, even by mistake. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕਊਆ ਕਹਾ ਕਪੂਰ ਚਰਾਏ ॥

कऊआ कहा कपूर चराए ॥

Kauaa kahaa kapoor charaae ||

Why offer camphor to a crow?

ਕਹ ਬਿਸੀਅਰ ਕਉ ਦੂਧੁ ਪੀਆਏ ॥੨॥

कह बिसीअर कउ दूधु पीआए ॥२॥

Kah biseear kau doodhu peeaae ||2||

Why give the snake milk to drink? ||2||

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

सतसंगति मिलि बिबेक बुधि होई ॥

Satasanggati mili bibek budhi hoee ||

Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, discriminating understanding is attained.

ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥

पारसु परसि लोहा कंचनु सोई ॥३॥

Paarasu parasi lohaa kancchanu soee ||3||

That iron which touches the Philosopher's Stone becomes gold. ||3||

ਸਾਕਤੁ ਸੁਆਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ॥

साकतु सुआनु सभु करे कराइआ ॥

Saakatu suaanu sabhu kare karaaiaa ||

The dog, the faithless cynic, does everything as the Lord causes him to do.

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥

जो धुरि लिखिआ सु करम कमाइआ ॥४॥

Jo dhuri likhiaa su karam kamaaiaa ||4||

He does the deeds pre-ordained from the very beginning. ||4||

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਨੀਮੁ ਸਿੰਚਾਈ ॥

अम्रितु लै लै नीमु सिंचाई ॥

Ammmritu lai lai neemu sincchaaee ||

If you take Ambrosial Nectar and irrigate the neem tree with it,

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਉਆ ਕੋ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥੭॥੨੦॥

कहत कबीर उआ को सहजु न जाई ॥५॥७॥२०॥

Kahat kabeer uaa ko sahaju na jaaee ||5||7||20||

Still, says Kabeer, its natural qualities are not changed. ||5||7||20||

ਲੰਕਾ ਸਾ ਕੋਟੁ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸੀ ਖਾਈ ॥

लंका सा कोटु समुंद सी खाई ॥

Lankkaa saa kotu samundd see khaaee ||

A fortress like that of Sri Lanka, with the ocean as a moat around it

ਤਿਹ ਰਾਵਨ ਘਰ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥

तिह रावन घर खबरि न पाई ॥१॥

Tih raavan ghar khabari na paaee ||1||

- there is no news about that house of Raavan. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥

किआ मागउ किछु थिरु न रहाई ॥

Kiaa maagau kichhu thiru na rahaaee ||

What shall I ask for? Nothing is permanent.

ਦੇਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

देखत नैन चलिओ जगु जाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dekhat nain chalio jagu jaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

I see with my eyes that the world is passing away. ||1|| Pause ||

ਇਕੁ ਲਖੁ ਪੂਤ ਸਵਾ ਲਖੁ ਨਾਤੀ ॥

इकु लखु पूत सवा लखु नाती ॥

Iku lakhu poot savaa lakhu naatee ||

Thousands of sons and thousands of grandsons

ਤਿਹ ਰਾਵਨ ਘਰ ਦੀਆ ਨ ਬਾਤੀ ॥੨॥

तिह रावन घर दीआ न बाती ॥२॥

Tih raavan ghar deeaa na baatee ||2||

- but in that house of Raavan, the lamps and wicks have gone out. ||2||

ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਤਪਤ ਰਸੋਈ ॥

चंदु सूरजु जा के तपत रसोई ॥

Chanddu sooraju jaa ke tapat rasoee ||

The moon and the sun cooked his food.

ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਕਪਰੇ ਧੋਈ ॥੩॥

बैसंतरु जा के कपरे धोई ॥३॥

Baisanttaru jaa ke kapare dhoee ||3||

The fire washed his clothes. ||3||

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਬਸਾਈ ॥

गुरमति रामै नामि बसाई ॥

Guramati raamai naami basaaee ||

Under Guru's Instructions, one whose mind is filled with the Lord's Name,

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕਤਹੂੰ ਜਾਈ ॥੪॥

असथिरु रहै न कतहूं जाई ॥४॥

Asathiru rahai na katahoonn jaaee ||4||

Becomes permanent, and does not go anywhere. ||4||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਲੋਈ ॥

कहत कबीर सुनहु रे लोई ॥

Kahat kabeer sunahu re loee ||

Says Kabeer, listen, people:

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥੮॥੨੧॥

राम नाम बिनु मुकति न होई ॥५॥८॥२१॥

Raam naam binu mukati na hoee ||5||8||21||

Without the Lord's Name, no one is liberated. ||5||8||21||

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪੂਤੁ ਪਿਛੈਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

पहिला पूतु पिछैरी माई ॥

Pahilaa pootu pichhairee maaee ||

First, the son was born, and then, his mother.

ਗੁਰੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਚੇਲੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥

गुरु लागो चेले की पाई ॥१॥

Guru laago chele kee paaee ||1||

The guru falls at the feet of the disciple. ||1||

ਏਕੁ ਅਚੰਭਉ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਭਾਈ ॥

एकु अच्मभउ सुनहु तुम्ह भाई ॥

Eku achambbhau sunahu tumh bhaaee ||

Listen to this wonderful thing, O Siblings of Destiny!

ਦੇਖਤ ਸਿੰਘੁ ਚਰਾਵਤ ਗਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

देखत सिंघु चरावत गाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dekhat singghu charaavat gaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

I saw the lion herding the cows. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜਲ ਕੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤਰਵਰਿ ਬਿਆਈ ॥

जल की मछुली तरवरि बिआई ॥

Jal kee machhulee taravari biaaee ||

The fish of the water gives birth upon a tree.

ਦੇਖਤ ਕੁਤਰਾ ਲੈ ਗਈ ਬਿਲਾਈ ॥੨॥

देखत कुतरा लै गई बिलाई ॥२॥

Dekhat kutaraa lai gaee bilaaee ||2||

I saw a cat carrying away a dog. ||2||

ਤਲੈ ਰੇ ਬੈਸਾ ਊਪਰਿ ਸੂਲਾ ॥

तलै रे बैसा ऊपरि सूला ॥

Talai re baisaa upari soolaa ||

The branches are below, and the roots are above.

ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਪੇਡਿ ਲਗੇ ਫਲ ਫੂਲਾ ॥੩॥

तिस कै पेडि लगे फल फूला ॥३॥

Tis kai pedi lage phal phoolaa ||3||

The trunk of that tree bears fruits and flowers. ||3||

ਘੋਰੈ ਚਰਿ ਭੈਸ ਚਰਾਵਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

घोरै चरि भैस चरावन जाई ॥

Ghorai chari bhais charaavan jaaee ||

Riding a horse, the buffalo takes him out to graze.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬੈਲੁ ਗੋਨਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਈ ॥੪॥

बाहरि बैलु गोनि घरि आई ॥४॥

Baahari bailu goni ghari aaee ||4||

The bull is away, while his load has come home. ||4||

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੁ ਇਸ ਪਦ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

कहत कबीर जु इस पद बूझै ॥

Kahat kabeer ju is pad boojhai ||

Says Kabeer, one who understands this hymn,

ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥੫॥੯॥੨੨॥

राम रमत तिसु सभु किछु सूझै ॥५॥९॥२२॥

Raam ramat tisu sabhu kichhu soojhai ||5||9||22||

And chants the Lord's Name, comes to understand everything. ||5||9||22||

Baaees chaupade tathaa pancchapade

ਬਿੰਦੁ ਤੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕੀਆ ਅਗਨਿ ਕੁੰਡ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥

बिंदु ते जिनि पिंडु कीआ अगनि कुंड रहाइआ ॥

Binddu te jini pinddu keeaa agani kundd rahaaiaa ||

The Lord created the body from sperm, and protected it in the fire pit.
