ਅਸਮਾਨ ਮਿ੍ਯਾਨੇ ਲਹੰਗ ਦਰੀਆ ਗੁਸਲ ਕਰਦਨ ਬੂਦ ॥

असमान म्यिाने लहंग दरीआ गुसल करदन बूद ॥

Asamaan myiaane lahangg dareeaa gusal karadan bood ||

Through the Tenth Gate, the stream of nectar flows; take your bath in this.

ਕਰਿ ਫਕਰੁ ਦਾਇਮ ਲਾਇ ਚਸਮੇ ਜਹ ਤਹਾ ਮਉਜੂਦੁ ॥੩॥

करि फकरु दाइम लाइ चसमे जह तहा मउजूदु ॥३॥

Kari phakaru daaim laai chasame jah tahaa maujoodu ||3||

Serve the Lord forever; use your eyes, and see Him ever-present everywhere. ||3||


ਅਲਾਹ ਪਾਕੰ ਪਾਕ ਹੈ ਸਕ ਕਰਉ ਜੇ ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਇ ॥

अलाह पाकं पाक है सक करउ जे दूसर होइ ॥

Alaah paakann paak hai sak karau je doosar hoi ||

The Lord is the purest of the pure; only through doubt could there be another.

ਕਬੀਰ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਰੀਮ ਕਾ ਉਹੁ ਕਰੈ ਜਾਨੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥

कबीर करमु करीम का उहु करै जानै सोइ ॥४॥१॥

Kabeer karamu kareem kaa uhu karai jaanai soi ||4||1||

O Kabeer, mercy flows from the Merciful Lord; He alone knows who acts. ||4||1||

ਅਵਤਰਿ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੁਮ ਕੀਨਾ ॥

अवतरि आइ कहा तुम कीना ॥

Avatari aai kahaa tum keenaa ||

Since your birth, what have you done?

ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਲੀਨਾ ॥੧॥

राम को नामु न कबहू लीना ॥१॥

Raam ko naamu na kabahoo leenaa ||1||

You have never even chanted the Name of the Lord. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਕਵਨ ਮਤਿ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

राम न जपहु कवन मति लागे ॥

Raam na japahu kavan mati laage ||

You have not meditated on the Lord; what thoughts are you attached to?

ਮਰਿ ਜਇਬੇ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मरि जइबे कउ किआ करहु अभागे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mari jaibe kau kiaa karahu abhaage ||1|| rahaau ||

What preparations are you making for your death, O unfortunate one? ||1|| Pause ||


ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਜੀਵਾਇਆ ॥

दुख सुख करि कै कुट्मबु जीवाइआ ॥

Dukh sukh kari kai kutambbu jeevaaiaa ||

Through pain and pleasure, you have taken care of your family.

ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਇਕਸਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

मरती बार इकसर दुखु पाइआ ॥२॥

Maratee baar ikasar dukhu paaiaa ||2||

But at the time of death, you shall have to endure the agony all alone. ||2||


ਕੰਠ ਗਹਨ ਤਬ ਕਰਨ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥

कंठ गहन तब करन पुकारा ॥

Kantth gahan tab karan pukaaraa ||

When you are seized by the neck, then you shall cry out.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਆਗੇ ਤੇ ਨ ਸੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥੧॥

कहि कबीर आगे ते न सम्हारा ॥३॥१॥

Kahi kabeer aage te na sammhaaraa ||3||1||

Says Kabeer, why didn't you remember the Lord before this? ||3||1||

Soohee, Kabeer Jee:

ਥਰਹਰ ਕੰਪੈ ਬਾਲਾ ਜੀਉ ॥

थरहर क्मपै बाला जीउ ॥

Tharahar kamppai baalaa jeeu ||

My innocent soul trembles and shakes.

ਨਾ ਜਾਨਉ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਸੀ ਪੀਉ ॥੧॥

ना जानउ किआ करसी पीउ ॥१॥

Naa jaanau kiaa karasee peeu ||1||

I do not know how my Husband Lord will deal with me. ||1||


ਰੈਨਿ ਗਈ ਮਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਭੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

रैनि गई मत दिनु भी जाइ ॥

Raini gaee mat dinu bhee jaai ||

The night of my youth has passed away; will the day of old age also pass away?

ਭਵਰ ਗਏ ਬਗ ਬੈਠੇ ਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

भवर गए बग बैठे आइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Bhavar gae bag baithe aai ||1|| rahaau ||

My dark hairs, like bumble bees, have gone away, and grey hairs, like cranes, have settled upon my head. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਾਚੈ ਕਰਵੈ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਪਾਨੀ ॥

काचै करवै रहै न पानी ॥

Kaachai karavai rahai na paanee ||

Water does not remain in the unbaked clay pot;

ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੁਮਲਾਨੀ ॥੨॥

हंसु चलिआ काइआ कुमलानी ॥२॥

Hanssu chaliaa kaaiaa kumalaanee ||2||

When the soul-swan departs, the body withers away. ||2||


ਕੁਆਰ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਜੈਸੇ ਕਰਤ ਸੀਗਾਰਾ ॥

कुआर कंनिआ जैसे करत सीगारा ॥

Kuaar kanniaa jaise karat seegaaraa ||

I decorate myself like a young virgin;

ਕਿਉ ਰਲੀਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਭਤਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

किउ रलीआ मानै बाझु भतारा ॥३॥

Kiu raleeaa maanai baajhu bhataaraa ||3||

But how can I enjoy pleasures, without my Husband Lord? ||3||


ਕਾਗ ਉਡਾਵਤ ਭੁਜਾ ਪਿਰਾਨੀ ॥

काग उडावत भुजा पिरानी ॥

Kaag udaavat bhujaa piraanee ||

My arm is tired, driving away the crows.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹ ਕਥਾ ਸਿਰਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੨॥

कहि कबीर इह कथा सिरानी ॥४॥२॥

Kahi kabeer ih kathaa siraanee ||4||2||

Says Kabeer, this is the way the story of my life ends. ||4||2||

ਅਮਲੁ ਸਿਰਾਨੋ ਲੇਖਾ ਦੇਨਾ ॥

अमलु सिरानो लेखा देना ॥

Amalu siraano lekhaa denaa ||

Your time of service is at its end, and you will have to give your account.

ਆਏ ਕਠਿਨ ਦੂਤ ਜਮ ਲੇਨਾ ॥

आए कठिन दूत जम लेना ॥

Aae kathin doot jam lenaa ||

The hard-hearted Messenger of Death has come to take you away.

ਕਿਆ ਤੈ ਖਟਿਆ ਕਹਾ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

किआ तै खटिआ कहा गवाइआ ॥

Kiaa tai khatiaa kahaa gavaaiaa ||

What have you earned, and what have you lost?

ਚਲਹੁ ਸਿਤਾਬ ਦੀਬਾਨਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

चलहु सिताब दीबानि बुलाइआ ॥१॥

Chalahu sitaab deebaani bulaaiaa ||1||

Come immediately! You are summoned to His Court! ||1||


ਚਲੁ ਦਰਹਾਲੁ ਦੀਵਾਨਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥

चलु दरहालु दीवानि बुलाइआ ॥

Chalu darahaalu deevaani bulaaiaa ||

Get going! Come just as you are! You have been summoned to His Court.

ਹਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਾ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि फुरमानु दरगह का आइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari phuramaanu daragah kaa aaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

The Order has come from the Court of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਰਉ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਗਾਵ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਾਕੀ ॥

करउ अरदासि गाव किछु बाकी ॥

Karau aradaasi gaav kichhu baakee ||

I pray to the Messenger of Death: please, I still have some outstanding debts to collect in the village.

ਲੇਉ ਨਿਬੇਰਿ ਆਜੁ ਕੀ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

लेउ निबेरि आजु की राती ॥

Leu niberi aaju kee raatee ||

I will collect them tonight;

ਕਿਛੁ ਭੀ ਖਰਚੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਾ ਸਾਰਉ ॥

किछु भी खरचु तुम्हारा सारउ ॥

Kichhu bhee kharachu tumhaaraa saarau ||

I will also pay you something for your expenses,

ਸੁਬਹ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਸਰਾਇ ਗੁਜਾਰਉ ॥੨॥

सुबह निवाज सराइ गुजारउ ॥२॥

Subah nivaaj saraai gujaarau ||2||

And I will recite my morning prayers on the way. ||2||


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

साधसंगि जा कउ हरि रंगु लागा ॥

Saadhasanggi jaa kau hari ranggu laagaa ||

One who is imbued with the Lord's Love, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy,

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥

धनु धनु सो जनु पुरखु सभागा ॥

Dhanu dhanu so janu purakhu sabhaagaa ||

blessed, blessed is that most fortunate servant of the Lord.

ਈਤ ਊਤ ਜਨ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥

ईत ऊत जन सदा सुहेले ॥

Eet ut jan sadaa suhele ||

Here and there, the humble servants of the Lord are always happy.

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ਅਮੋਲੇ ॥੩॥

जनमु पदारथु जीति अमोले ॥३॥

Janamu padaarathu jeeti amole ||3||

They win the priceless treasure of this human life. ||3||


ਜਾਗਤੁ ਸੋਇਆ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

जागतु सोइआ जनमु गवाइआ ॥

Jaagatu soiaa janamu gavaaiaa ||

When he is awake, he is sleeping, and so he loses this life.

ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ਜੋਰਿਆ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥

मालु धनु जोरिआ भइआ पराइआ ॥

Maalu dhanu joriaa bhaiaa paraaiaa ||

The property and wealth he has accumulated passes on to someone else.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੇਈ ਨਰ ਭੂਲੇ ॥

कहु कबीर तेई नर भूले ॥

Kahu kabeer teee nar bhoole ||

Says Kabeer, those people are deluded,

ਖਸਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੂਲੇ ॥੪॥੩॥

खसमु बिसारि माटी संगि रूले ॥४॥३॥

Khasamu bisaari maatee sanggi roole ||4||3||

Who forget their Lord and Master, and roll in the dust. ||4||3||


ਸੂਹੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ ਲਲਿਤ ॥

सूही कबीर जीउ ललित ॥

Soohee kabeer jeeu lalit ||

Soohee, Kabeer Jee, Lallit:

ਥਾਕੇ ਨੈਨ ਸ੍ਰਵਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਥਾਕੀ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ॥

थाके नैन स्रवन सुनि थाके थाकी सुंदरि काइआ ॥

Thaake nain srvan suni thaake thaakee sunddari kaaiaa ||

My eyes are exhausted, and my ears are tired of hearing; my beautiful body is exhausted.

ਜਰਾ ਹਾਕ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਮਤਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਏਕ ਨ ਥਾਕਸਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

जरा हाक दी सभ मति थाकी एक न थाकसि माइआ ॥१॥

Jaraa haak dee sabh mati thaakee ek na thaakasi maaiaa ||1||

Driven forward by old age, all my senses are exhausted; only my attachment to Maya is not exhausted. ||1||


ਬਾਵਰੇ ਤੈ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

बावरे तै गिआन बीचारु न पाइआ ॥

Baavare tai giaan beechaaru na paaiaa ||

O mad man, you have not obtained spiritual wisdom and meditation.

ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बिरथा जनमु गवाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Birathaa janamu gavaaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

You have wasted this human life, and lost. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਤਿਸੈ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਘਟ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਸਾ ॥

तब लगु प्रानी तिसै सरेवहु जब लगु घट महि सासा ॥

Tab lagu praanee tisai sarevahu jab lagu ghat mahi saasaa ||

O mortal, serve the Lord, as long as the breath of life remains in the body.

ਜੇ ਘਟੁ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੨॥

जे घटु जाइ त भाउ न जासी हरि के चरन निवासा ॥२॥

Je ghatu jaai ta bhaau na jaasee hari ke charan nivaasaa ||2||

And even when your body dies, your love for the Lord shall not die; you shall dwell at the Feet of the Lord. ||2||


ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਬਸਾਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥

जिस कउ सबदु बसावै अंतरि चूकै तिसहि पिआसा ॥

Jis kau sabadu basaavai anttari chookai tisahi piaasaa ||

When the Word of the Shabad abides deep within, thirst and desire are quenched.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਚਉਪੜਿ ਖੇਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਜਿਣਿ ਢਾਲੇ ਪਾਸਾ ॥੩॥

हुकमै बूझै चउपड़ि खेलै मनु जिणि ढाले पासा ॥३॥

Hukamai boojhai chaupa(rr)i khelai manu ji(nn)i dhaale paasaa ||3||

When one understands the Hukam of the Lord's Command, he plays the game of chess with the Lord; throwing the dice, he conquers his own mind. ||3||


ਜੋ ਜਨ ਜਾਨਿ ਭਜਹਿ ਅਬਿਗਤ ਕਉ ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਨਾਸਾ ॥

जो जन जानि भजहि अबिगत कउ तिन का कछू न नासा ॥

Jo jan jaani bhajahi abigat kau tin kaa kachhoo na naasaa ||

Those humble beings, who know the Imperishable Lord and meditate on Him, are not destroyed at all.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਹਾਰਹਿ ਢਾਲਿ ਜੁ ਜਾਨਹਿ ਪਾਸਾ ॥੪॥੪॥

कहु कबीर ते जन कबहु न हारहि ढालि जु जानहि पासा ॥४॥४॥

Kahu kabeer te jan kabahu na haarahi dhaali ju jaanahi paasaa ||4||4||

Says Kabeer, those humble beings who know how to throw these dice, never lose the game of life. ||4||4||


ਸੂਹੀ ਲਲਿਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ ॥

सूही ललित कबीर जीउ ॥

Soohee lalit kabeer jeeu ||

Soohee, Lalit, Kabeer Jee:

ਏਕੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਪੰਚ ਸਿਕਦਾਰਾ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਾਲਾ ॥

एकु कोटु पंच सिकदारा पंचे मागहि हाला ॥

Eku kotu pancch sikadaaraa pancche maagahi haalaa ||

In the one fortress of the body, there are five rulers, and all five demand payment of taxes.

ਜਿਮੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕਿਸੀ ਕੀ ਬੋਈ ਐਸਾ ਦੇਨੁ ਦੁਖਾਲਾ ॥੧॥

जिमी नाही मै किसी की बोई ऐसा देनु दुखाला ॥१॥

Jimee naahee mai kisee kee boee aisaa denu dukhaalaa ||1||

I have not farmed anyone's land, so such payment is difficult for me to pay. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗਾ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਨੀਤਿ ਡਸੈ ਪਟਵਾਰੀ ॥

हरि के लोगा मो कउ नीति डसै पटवारी ॥

Hari ke logaa mo kau neeti dasai patavaaree ||

O people of the Lord, the tax-collector is constantly torturing me!

ਊਪਰਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਹਉ ਲੀਆ ਉਬਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ऊपरि भुजा करि मै गुर पहि पुकारिआ तिनि हउ लीआ उबारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Upari bhujaa kari mai gur pahi pukaariaa tini hau leeaa ubaaree ||1|| rahaau ||

Raising my arms up, I complained to my Guru, and He has saved me. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਉ ਡਾਡੀ ਦਸ ਮੁੰਸਫ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਰਈਅਤਿ ਬਸਨ ਨ ਦੇਹੀ ॥

नउ डाडी दस मुंसफ धावहि रईअति बसन न देही ॥

Nau daadee das munssaph dhaavahi raeeati basan na dehee ||

The nine tax-assessors and the ten magistrates go out; they do not allow their subjects to live in peace.

ਡੋਰੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਾਪਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਸਟਾਲਾ ਲੇਹੀ ॥੨॥

डोरी पूरी मापहि नाही बहु बिसटाला लेही ॥२॥

Doree pooree maapahi naahee bahu bisataalaa lehee ||2||

They do not measure with a full tape, and they take huge amounts in bribes. ||2||


ਬਹਤਰਿ ਘਰ ਇਕੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਉਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਾਈ ॥

बहतरि घर इकु पुरखु समाइआ उनि दीआ नामु लिखाई ॥

Bahatari ghar iku purakhu samaaiaa uni deeaa naamu likhaaee ||

The One Lord is contained in the seventy-two chambers of the body, and He has written off my account.

ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕਾ ਦਫਤਰੁ ਸੋਧਿਆ ਬਾਕੀ ਰਿਜਮ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੩॥

धरम राइ का दफतरु सोधिआ बाकी रिजम न काई ॥३॥

Dharam raai kaa daphataru sodhiaa baakee rijam na kaaee ||3||

The records of the Righteous Judge of Dharma have been searched, and I owe absolutely nothing. ||3||


ਸੰਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਤਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਿੰਦਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਏਕੋੁ ॥

संता कउ मति कोई निंदहु संत रामु है एको ॥

Santtaa kau mati koee ninddahu santt raamu hai ekao ||

Let no one slander the Saints, because the Saints and the Lord are as one.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਮੈ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਬਿਬੇਕੋੁ ॥੪॥੫॥

कहु कबीर मै सो गुरु पाइआ जा का नाउ बिबेको ॥४॥५॥

Kahu kabeer mai so guru paaiaa jaa kaa naau bibekao ||4||5||

Says Kabeer, I have found that Guru, whose Name is Clear Understanding. ||4||5||


ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ॥ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ

बिलावलु बाणी भगता की ॥ कबीर जीउ की

Bilaavalu baa(nn)ee bhagataa kee || kabeer jeeu kee

Bilaaval, The Word Of The Devotees. Of Kabeer Jee:

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सति नामु करता पुरखु गुर प्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari sati naamu karataa purakhu gura prsaadi ||

ਐਸੋ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਪੇਖਨਾ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਈਹੈ ਰੇ ॥

ऐसो इहु संसारु पेखना रहनु न कोऊ पईहै रे ॥

Aiso ihu sanssaaru pekhanaa rahanu na kou paeehai re ||

This world is a drama; no one can remain here.

ਸੂਧੇ ਸੂਧੇ ਰੇਗਿ ਚਲਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਨਤਰ ਕੁਧਕਾ ਦਿਵਈਹੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सूधे सूधे रेगि चलहु तुम नतर कुधका दिवईहै रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Soodhe soodhe regi chalahu tum natar kudhakaa divaeehai re ||1|| rahaau ||

Walk the straight path; otherwise, you will be pushed around. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਾਰੇ ਬੂਢੇ ਤਰੁਨੇ ਭਈਆ ਸਭਹੂ ਜਮੁ ਲੈ ਜਈਹੈ ਰੇ ॥

बारे बूढे तरुने भईआ सभहू जमु लै जईहै रे ॥

Baare boodhe tarune bhaeeaa sabhahoo jamu lai jaeehai re ||

The children, the young and the old, O Siblings of Destiny, will be taken away by the Messenger of Death.

ਮਾਨਸੁ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਮੂਸਾ ਕੀਨੋ ਮੀਚੁ ਬਿਲਈਆ ਖਈਹੈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥

मानसु बपुरा मूसा कीनो मीचु बिलईआ खईहै रे ॥१॥

Maanasu bapuraa moosaa keeno meechu bilaeeaa khaeehai re ||1||

The Lord has made the poor man a mouse, and the cat of Death is eating him up. ||1||


ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਅਰੁ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਮਨਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਕਾਨੀ ਰੇ ॥

धनवंता अरु निरधन मनई ता की कछू न कानी रे ॥

Dhanavanttaa aru niradhan manaee taa kee kachhoo na kaanee re ||

It gives no special consideration to either the rich or the poor.

ਰਾਜਾ ਪਰਜਾ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਰੈ ਐਸੋ ਕਾਲੁ ਬਡਾਨੀ ਰੇ ॥੨॥

राजा परजा सम करि मारै ऐसो कालु बडानी रे ॥२॥

Raajaa parajaa sam kari maarai aiso kaalu badaanee re ||2||

The king and his subjects are equally killed; such is the power of Death. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਏ ਤਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ਰੇ ॥

हरि के सेवक जो हरि भाए तिन्ह की कथा निरारी रे ॥

Hari ke sevak jo hari bhaae tinh kee kathaa niraaree re ||

Those who are pleasing to the Lord are the servants of the Lord; their story is unique and singular.

ਆਵਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਮਰਤੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸੰਗਾਰੀ ਰੇ ॥੩॥

आवहि न जाहि न कबहू मरते पारब्रहम संगारी रे ॥३॥

Aavahi na jaahi na kabahoo marate paarabrham sanggaaree re ||3||

They do not come and go, and they never die; they remain with the Supreme Lord God. ||3||


ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਲਛਿਮੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਹੈ ਤਜਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਜਾਨੀ ਰੇ ॥

पुत्र कलत्र लछिमी माइआ इहै तजहु जीअ जानी रे ॥

Putr kalatr lachhimee maaiaa ihai tajahu jeea jaanee re ||

Know this in your soul, that by renouncing your children, spouse, wealth and property

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਮਿਲਿਹੈ ਸਾਰਿਗਪਾਨੀ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥

कहत कबीरु सुनहु रे संतहु मिलिहै सारिगपानी रे ॥४॥१॥

Kahat kabeeru sunahu re santtahu milihai saarigapaanee re ||4||1||

- says Kabeer, listen, O Saints - you shall be united with the Lord of the Universe. ||4||1||

Bilaaval:

ਬਿਦਿਆ ਨ ਪਰਉ ਬਾਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਉ ॥

बिदिआ न परउ बादु नही जानउ ॥

Bidiaa na parau baadu nahee jaanau ||

I do not read books of knowledge, and I do not understand the debates.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਕਥਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਬਉਰਾਨੋ ॥੧॥

हरि गुन कथत सुनत बउरानो ॥१॥

Hari gun kathat sunat bauraano ||1||

I have gone insane, chanting and hearing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||


ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਬਉਰਾ ਸਭ ਖਲਕ ਸੈਆਨੀ ਮੈ ਬਉਰਾ ॥

मेरे बाबा मै बउरा सभ खलक सैआनी मै बउरा ॥

Mere baabaa mai bauraa sabh khalak saiaanee mai bauraa ||

O my father, I have gone insane; the whole world is sane, and I am insane.

ਮੈ ਬਿਗਰਿਓ ਬਿਗਰੈ ਮਤਿ ਅਉਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मै बिगरिओ बिगरै मति अउरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mai bigario bigarai mati auraa ||1|| rahaau ||

I am spoiled; let no one else be spoiled like me. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬਉਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਕੀਓ ਬਉਰਾ ॥

आपि न बउरा राम कीओ बउरा ॥

Aapi na bauraa raam keeo bauraa ||

I have not made myself go insane - the Lord made me go insane.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਰਿ ਗਇਓ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਮੋਰਾ ॥੨॥

सतिगुरु जारि गइओ भ्रमु मोरा ॥२॥

Satiguru jaari gaio bhrmu moraa ||2||

The True Guru has burnt away my doubt. ||2||


ਮੈ ਬਿਗਰੇ ਅਪਨੀ ਮਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥

मै बिगरे अपनी मति खोई ॥

Mai bigare apanee mati khoee ||

I am spoiled; I have lost my intellect.

ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲਉ ਮਤਿ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥

मेरे भरमि भूलउ मति कोई ॥३॥

Mere bharami bhoolau mati koee ||3||

Let no one go astray in doubt like me. ||3||


ਸੋ ਬਉਰਾ ਜੋ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥

सो बउरा जो आपु न पछानै ॥

So bauraa jo aapu na pachhaanai ||

He alone is insane, who does not understand himself.

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨੈ ਤ ਏਕੈ ਜਾਨੈ ॥੪॥

आपु पछानै त एकै जानै ॥४॥

Aapu pachhaanai ta ekai jaanai ||4||

When he understands himself, then he knows the One Lord. ||4||


ਅਬਹਿ ਨ ਮਾਤਾ ਸੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਮਾਤਾ ॥

अबहि न माता सु कबहु न माता ॥

Abahi na maataa su kabahu na maataa ||

One who is not intoxicated with the Lord now, shall never be intoxicated.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੫॥੨॥

कहि कबीर रामै रंगि राता ॥५॥२॥

Kahi kabeer raamai ranggi raataa ||5||2||

Says Kabeer, I am imbued with the Lord's Love. ||5||2||


ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ॥

Bilaaval:

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਬਨ ਖੰਡ ਜਾਈਐ ਚੁਨਿ ਖਾਈਐ ਕੰਦਾ ॥

ग्रिहु तजि बन खंड जाईऐ चुनि खाईऐ कंदा ॥

Grihu taji ban khandd jaaeeai chuni khaaeeai kanddaa ||

Abandoning his household, he may go to the forest, and live by eating roots;

ਅਜਹੁ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਨ ਛੋਡਈ ਪਾਪੀ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਦਾ ॥੧॥

अजहु बिकार न छोडई पापी मनु मंदा ॥१॥

Ajahu bikaar na chhodaee paapee manu manddaa ||1||

But even so, his sinful, evil mind does not renounce corruption. ||1||


ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਉ ਕੈਸੇ ਤਰਉ ਭਵਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

किउ छूटउ कैसे तरउ भवजल निधि भारी ॥

Kiu chhootau kaise tarau bhavajal nidhi bhaaree ||

How can anyone be saved? How can anyone cross over the terrifying world-ocean?

ਰਾਖੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੀਠੁਲਾ ਜਨੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

राखु राखु मेरे बीठुला जनु सरनि तुम्हारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raakhu raakhu mere beethulaa janu sarani tumhaaree ||1|| rahaau ||

Save me, save me, O my Lord! Your humble servant seeks Your Sanctuary. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਿਖੈ ਬਿਖੈ ਕੀ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਤਜੀਅ ਨਹ ਜਾਈ ॥

बिखै बिखै की बासना तजीअ नह जाई ॥

Bikhai bikhai kee baasanaa tajeea nah jaaee ||

I cannot escape my desire for sin and corruption.

ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥੨॥

अनिक जतन करि राखीऐ फिरि फिरि लपटाई ॥२॥

Anik jatan kari raakheeai phiri phiri lapataaee ||2||

I make all sorts of efforts to hold back from this desire, but it clings to me, again and again. ||2||


ਜਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਨ ਨੀਕਾ ॥

जरा जीवन जोबनु गइआ किछु कीआ न नीका ॥

Jaraa jeevan jobanu gaiaa kichhu keeaa na neekaa ||

Youth and old age - my entire life has passed, but I haven't done any good.

ਇਹੁ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੋ ਕਉਡੀ ਲਗਿ ਮੀਕਾ ॥੩॥

इहु जीअरा निरमोलको कउडी लगि मीका ॥३॥

Ihu jeearaa niramolako kaudee lagi meekaa ||3||

This priceless soul has been treated as if it were worth no more than a shell. ||3||


ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਧਵਾ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਬਿਆਪੀ ॥

कहु कबीर मेरे माधवा तू सरब बिआपी ॥

Kahu kabeer mere maadhavaa too sarab biaapee ||

Says Kabeer, O my Lord, You are contained in all.

ਤੁਮ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਪਾਪੀ ॥੪॥੩॥

तुम समसरि नाही दइआलु मोहि समसरि पापी ॥४॥३॥

Tum samasari naahee daiaalu mohi samasari paapee ||4||3||

There is none as merciful as You are, and none as sinful as I am. ||4||3||


ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ॥

ਨਿਤ ਉਠਿ ਕੋਰੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਆਨੈ ਲੀਪਤ ਜੀਉ ਗਇਓ ॥

नित उठि कोरी गागरि आनै लीपत जीउ गइओ ॥

Nit uthi koree gaagari aanai leepat jeeu gaio ||

Every day, he rises early, and brings a fresh clay pot; he passes his life embellishing and glazing it.

ਤਾਨਾ ਬਾਨਾ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲਪਟਿਓ ॥੧॥

ताना बाना कछू न सूझै हरि हरि रसि लपटिओ ॥१॥

Taanaa baanaa kachhoo na soojhai hari hari rasi lapatio ||1||

He does not think at all of worldly weaving; he is absorbed in the subtle essence of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||


ਹਮਾਰੇ ਕੁਲ ਕਉਨੇ ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹਿਓ ॥

हमारे कुल कउने रामु कहिओ ॥

Hamaare kul kaune raamu kahio ||

Who in our family has ever chanted the Name of the Lord?

ਜਬ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਲਈ ਨਿਪੂਤੇ ਤਬ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਭਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जब की माला लई निपूते तब ते सुखु न भइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jab kee maalaa laee nipoote tab te sukhu na bhaio ||1|| rahaau ||

Ever since this worthless son of mine began chanting with his mala, we have had no peace at all! ||1|| Pause ||


ਸੁਨਹੁ ਜਿਠਾਨੀ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਦਿਰਾਨੀ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਏਕੁ ਭਇਓ ॥

सुनहु जिठानी सुनहु दिरानी अचरजु एकु भइओ ॥

Sunahu jithaanee sunahu diraanee acharaju eku bhaio ||

Listen, O my sisters-in-law, a wondrous thing has happened!

ਸਾਤ ਸੂਤ ਇਨਿ ਮੁਡੀਂਏ ਖੋਏ ਇਹੁ ਮੁਡੀਆ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਮੁਇਓ ॥੨॥

सात सूत इनि मुडींए खोए इहु मुडीआ किउ न मुइओ ॥२॥

Saat soot ini mudeene khoe ihu mudeeaa kiu na muio ||2||

This boy has ruined our weaving business. Why didn't he simply die? ||2||


ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਕਾ ਏਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਇਓ ॥

सरब सुखा का एकु हरि सुआमी सो गुरि नामु दइओ ॥

Sarab sukhaa kaa eku hari suaamee so guri naamu daio ||

O mother, the One Lord, the Lord and Master, is the source of all peace. The Guru has blessed me with His Name.

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਾਖੀ ਹਰਨਾਖਸੁ ਨਖ ਬਿਦਰਿਓ ॥੩॥

संत प्रहलाद की पैज जिनि राखी हरनाखसु नख बिदरिओ ॥३॥

Santt prhalaad kee paij jini raakhee haranaakhasu nakh bidario ||3||

He preserved the honor of Prahlaad, and destroyed Harnaakhash with his nails. ||3||


ਘਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਵ ਪਿਤਰ ਕੀ ਛੋਡੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਲਇਓ ॥

घर के देव पितर की छोडी गुर को सबदु लइओ ॥

Ghar ke dev pitar kee chhodee gur ko sabadu laio ||

I have renounced the gods and ancestors of my house, for the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਪਾਪ ਖੰਡਨੁ ਸੰਤਹ ਲੈ ਉਧਰਿਓ ॥੪॥੪॥

कहत कबीरु सगल पाप खंडनु संतह लै उधरिओ ॥४॥४॥

Kahat kabeeru sagal paap khanddanu santtah lai udhario ||4||4||

Says Kabeer, God is the Destroyer of all sins; He is the Saving Grace of His Saints. ||4||4||


ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ॥

Bilaaval:

ਕੋਊ ਹਰਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

कोऊ हरि समानि नही राजा ॥

Kou hari samaani nahee raajaa ||

There is no king equal to the Lord.

ਏ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸਭ ਦਿਵਸ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਕਰਤ ਦਿਵਾਜਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ए भूपति सभ दिवस चारि के झूठे करत दिवाजा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

E bhoopati sabh divas chaari ke jhoothe karat divaajaa ||1|| rahaau ||

All these lords of the world last for only a few days, putting on their false displays. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤੇਰੋ ਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੋਇ ਕਤ ਡੋਲੈ ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਪਰ ਛਾਜਾ ॥

तेरो जनु होइ सोइ कत डोलै तीनि भवन पर छाजा ॥

Tero janu hoi soi kat dolai teeni bhavan par chhaajaa ||

How can Your humble servant waver? You spread Your shadow over the three worlds.

ਹਾਥੁ ਪਸਾਰਿ ਸਕੈ ਕੋ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਬੋਲਿ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਅੰਦਾਜਾ ॥੧॥

हाथु पसारि सकै को जन कउ बोलि सकै न अंदाजा ॥१॥

Haathu pasaari sakai ko jan kau boli sakai na anddaajaa ||1||

Who can raise his hand against Your humble servant? No one can describe the Lord's expanse. ||1||


ਚੇਤਿ ਅਚੇਤ ਮੂੜ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਜਾ ॥

चेति अचेत मूड़ मन मेरे बाजे अनहद बाजा ॥

Cheti achet moo(rr) man mere baaje anahad baajaa ||

Remember Him, O my thoughtless and foolish mind, and the unstruck melody of the sound current will resonate and resound.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੰਸਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਚੂਕੋ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ॥੨॥੫॥

कहि कबीर संसा भ्रमु चूको ध्रू प्रहिलाद निवाजा ॥२॥५॥

Kahi kabeer sanssaa bhrmu chooko dhroo prhilaad nivaajaa ||2||5||

Says Kabeer, my skepticism and doubt have been dispelled; the Lord has exalted me, as He did Dhroo and Prahlaad. ||2||5||


ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ॥

ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਹਮ ਤੇ ਬਿਗਰੀ ॥

राखि लेहु हम ते बिगरी ॥

Raakhi lehu ham te bigaree ||

Save me! I have disobeyed You.

ਸੀਲੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਜਪੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨੀ ਹਉ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਟੇਢ ਪਗਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सीलु धरमु जपु भगति न कीनी हउ अभिमान टेढ पगरी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Seelu dharamu japu bhagati na keenee hau abhimaan tedh pagaree ||1|| rahaau ||

I have not practiced humility, righteousness or devotional worship; I am proud and egotistical, and I have taken a crooked path. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅਮਰ ਜਾਨਿ ਸੰਚੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਇਆ ਇਹ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਾਚੀ ਗਗਰੀ ॥

अमर जानि संची इह काइआ इह मिथिआ काची गगरी ॥

Amar jaani sancchee ih kaaiaa ih mithiaa kaachee gagaree ||

Believing this body to be immortal, I pampered it, but it is a fragile and perishable vessel.

ਜਿਨਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਹਮ ਕੀਏ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਅਵਰ ਲਗਰੀ ॥੧॥

जिनहि निवाजि साजि हम कीए तिसहि बिसारि अवर लगरी ॥१॥

Jinahi nivaaji saaji ham keee tisahi bisaari avar lagaree ||1||

Forgetting the Lord who formed, fashioned and embellished me, I have become attached to another. ||1||


ਸੰਧਿਕ ਤੋਹਿ ਸਾਧ ਨਹੀ ਕਹੀਅਉ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੇ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਪਗਰੀ ॥

संधिक तोहि साध नही कहीअउ सरनि परे तुमरी पगरी ॥

Sanddhik tohi saadh nahee kaheeau sarani pare tumaree pagaree ||

I am Your thief; I cannot be called holy. I have fallen at Your feet, seeking Your Sanctuary.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਸੁਨੀਅਹੁ ਮਤ ਘਾਲਹੁ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਖਬਰੀ ॥੨॥੬॥

कहि कबीर इह बिनती सुनीअहु मत घालहु जम की खबरी ॥२॥६॥

Kahi kabeer ih binatee suneeahu mat ghaalahu jam kee khabaree ||2||6||

Says Kabeer, please listen to this prayer of mine, O Lord; please do not send me summons of the Messenger of Death. ||2||6||

ਦਰਮਾਦੇ ਠਾਢੇ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

दरमादे ठाढे दरबारि ॥

Daramaade thaadhe darabaari ||

I stand humbly at Your Court.

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਕੋ ਮੇਰੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਖੋਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਕਿਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तुझ बिनु सुरति करै को मेरी दरसनु दीजै खोल्हि किवार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tujh binu surati karai ko meree darasanu deejai kholhi kivaar ||1|| rahaau ||

Who else can take care of me, other than You? Please open Your door, and grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤੁਮ ਧਨ ਧਨੀ ਉਦਾਰ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨੑ ਸੁਨੀਅਤੁ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰ ॥

तुम धन धनी उदार तिआगी स्रवनन्ह सुनीअतु सुजसु तुम्हार ॥

Tum dhan dhanee udaar tiaagee srvananh suneeatu sujasu tumhaar ||

You are the richest of the rich, generous and unattached. With my ears, I listen to Your Praises.

ਮਾਗਉ ਕਾਹਿ ਰੰਕ ਸਭ ਦੇਖਉ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੋ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

मागउ काहि रंक सभ देखउ तुम्ह ही ते मेरो निसतारु ॥१॥

Maagau kaahi rankk sabh dekhau tumh hee te mero nisataaru ||1||

From whom should I beg? I see that all are beggars. My salvation comes only from You. ||1||


ਜੈਦੇਉ ਨਾਮਾ ਬਿਪ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਭਈ ਹੈ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

जैदेउ नामा बिप सुदामा तिन कउ क्रिपा भई है अपार ॥

Jaideu naamaa bip sudaamaa tin kau kripaa bhaee hai apaar ||

You blessed Jai Dayv, Naam Dayv and Sudaamaa the Brahmin with Your infinite mercy.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੁਮ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਦਾਤੇ ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਤ ਨ ਬਾਰ ॥੨॥੭॥

कहि कबीर तुम सम्रथ दाते चारि पदारथ देत न बार ॥२॥७॥

Kahi kabeer tum sammrth daate chaari padaarath det na baar ||2||7||

Says Kabeer, You are the All-powerful Lord, the Great Giver; in an instant, You bestow the four great blessings. ||2||7||

ਡੰਡਾ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਆਧਾਰੀ ॥

डंडा मुंद्रा खिंथा आधारी ॥

Danddaa munddraa khintthaa aadhaaree ||

He has a walking stick, ear-rings, a patched coat and a begging bowl.

ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਵੈ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

भ्रम कै भाइ भवै भेखधारी ॥१॥

Bhrm kai bhaai bhavai bhekhadhaaree ||1||

Wearing the robes of a beggar, he wanders around, deluded by doubt. ||1||


ਆਸਨੁ ਪਵਨ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਬਵਰੇ ॥

आसनु पवन दूरि करि बवरे ॥

Aasanu pavan doori kari bavare ||

Abandon your Yogic postures and breath control exercises, O madman.

ਛੋਡਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਬਵਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

छोडि कपटु नित हरि भजु बवरे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Chhodi kapatu nit hari bhaju bavare ||1|| rahaau ||

Renounce fraud and deception, and meditate continuously on the Lord, O madman. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਿਹ ਤੂ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਸੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਨ ਭੋਗੀ ॥

जिह तू जाचहि सो त्रिभवन भोगी ॥

Jih too jaachahi so tribhavan bhogee ||

That which you beg for, has been enjoyed in the three worlds.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਕੇਸੌ ਜਗਿ ਜੋਗੀ ॥੨॥੮॥

कहि कबीर केसौ जगि जोगी ॥२॥८॥

Kahi kabeer kesau jagi jogee ||2||8||

Says Kabeer, the Lord is the only Yogi in the world. ||2||8||

इन्हि माइआ जगदीस गुसाई तुम्हरे चरन बिसारे ॥

Inhi maaiaa jagadees gusaaee tumhre charan bisaare ||

This Maya has made me forget Your feet, O Lord of the World, Master of the Universe.

ਕਿੰਚਤ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਉਪਜੈ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਨ ਕਹਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੇਚਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

किंचत प्रीति न उपजै जन कउ जन कहा करहि बेचारे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kincchat preeti na upajai jan kau jan kahaa karahi bechaare ||1|| rahaau ||

Not even a bit of love wells up in Your humble servant; what can Your poor servant do? ||1|| Pause ||


ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਨੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧਨੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਮਤਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਫੰਨੀ ॥

ध्रिगु तनु ध्रिगु धनु ध्रिगु इह माइआ ध्रिगु ध्रिगु मति बुधि फंनी ॥

Dhrigu tanu dhrigu dhanu dhrigu ih maaiaa dhrigu dhrigu mati budhi phannee ||

Cursed is the body, cursed is the wealth, and cursed is this Maya; cursed, cursed is the clever intellect and understanding.

ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਬਾਂਧੇ ਆਪ ਬਚੰਨੀ ॥੧॥

इस माइआ कउ द्रिड़ु करि राखहु बांधे आप बचंनी ॥१॥

Is maaiaa kau dri(rr)u kari raakhahu baandhe aap bachannee ||1||

Restrain and hold back this Maya; overcome it, through the Word of the Guru's Teachings. ||1||


ਕਿਆ ਖੇਤੀ ਕਿਆ ਲੇਵਾ ਦੇਈ ਪਰਪੰਚ ਝੂਠੁ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥

किआ खेती किआ लेवा देई परपंच झूठु गुमाना ॥

Kiaa khetee kiaa levaa deee parapancch jhoothu gumaanaa ||

What good is farming, and what good is trading? Worldly entanglements and pride are false.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਤਿ ਬਿਗੂਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਿਦਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੯॥

कहि कबीर ते अंति बिगूते आइआ कालु निदाना ॥२॥९॥

Kahi kabeer te antti bigoote aaiaa kaalu nidaanaa ||2||9||

Says Kabeer, in the end, they are ruined; ultimately, Death will come for them. ||2||9||

ਸਰੀਰ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਭੀਤਰੇ ਆਛੈ ਕਮਲ ਅਨੂਪ ॥

सरीर सरोवर भीतरे आछै कमल अनूप ॥

Sareer sarovar bheetare aachhai kamal anoop ||

Within the pool of the body, there is an incomparably beautiful lotus flower.

ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮੋ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪ ॥੧॥

परम जोति पुरखोतमो जा कै रेख न रूप ॥१॥

Param joti purakhotamo jaa kai rekh na roop ||1||

Within it, is the Supreme Light, the Supreme Soul, who has no feature or form. ||1||


ਰੇ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

रे मन हरि भजु भ्रमु तजहु जगजीवन राम ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Re man hari bhaju bhrmu tajahu jagajeevan raam ||1|| rahaau ||

O my mind, vibrate, meditate on the Lord, and forsake your doubt. The Lord is the Life of the World. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਵਤ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਦੀਸਈ ਨਹ ਦੀਸੈ ਜਾਤ ॥

आवत कछू न दीसई नह दीसै जात ॥

Aavat kachhoo na deesaee nah deesai jaat ||

Nothing is seen coming into the world, and nothing is seen leaving it.

ਜਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਤਹੀ ਜੈਸੇ ਪੁਰਿਵਨ ਪਾਤ ॥੨॥

जह उपजै बिनसै तही जैसे पुरिवन पात ॥२॥

Jah upajai binasai tahee jaise purivan paat ||2||

Where the body is born, there it dies, like the leaves of the water-lily. ||2||


ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਜੀ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

मिथिआ करि माइआ तजी सुख सहज बीचारि ॥

Mithiaa kari maaiaa tajee sukh sahaj beechaari ||

Maya is false and transitory; forsaking it, one obtains peaceful, celestial contemplation.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੰਝਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੩॥੧੦॥

कहि कबीर सेवा करहु मन मंझि मुरारि ॥३॥१०॥

Kahi kabeer sevaa karahu man manjjhi muraari ||3||10||

Says Kabeer, serve Him within your mind; He is the Enemy of ego, the Destroyer of demons. ||3||10||

Janam maran kaa bhrmu gaiaa gobid liv laagee ||

The illusion of birth and death is gone; I lovingly focus on the Lord of the Universe.

ਜੀਵਤ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਨਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਜਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जीवत सुंनि समानिआ गुर साखी जागी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jeevat sunni samaaniaa gur saakhee jaagee ||1|| rahaau ||

In my life, I am absorbed in deep silent meditation; the Guru's Teachings have awakened me. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਾਸੀ ਤੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਧੁਨਿ ਕਾਸੀ ਜਾਈ ॥

कासी ते धुनि ऊपजै धुनि कासी जाई ॥

Kaasee te dhuni upajai dhuni kaasee jaaee ||

The sound made from bronze, that sound goes into the bronze again.

ਕਾਸੀ ਫੂਟੀ ਪੰਡਿਤਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਕਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

कासी फूटी पंडिता धुनि कहां समाई ॥१॥

Kaasee phootee pandditaa dhuni kahaan samaaee ||1||

But when the bronze is broken, O Pandit, O religious scholar, where does the sound go then? ||1||


ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਸੰਧਿ ਮੈ ਪੇਖਿਆ ਘਟ ਹੂ ਘਟ ਜਾਗੀ ॥

त्रिकुटी संधि मै पेखिआ घट हू घट जागी ॥

Trikutee sanddhi mai pekhiaa ghat hoo ghat jaagee ||

I gaze upon the world, the confluence of the three qualities; God is awake and aware in each and every heart.

ਐਸੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਸਮਾਚਰੀ ਘਟ ਮਾਹਿ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥੨॥

ऐसी बुधि समाचरी घट माहि तिआगी ॥२॥

Aisee budhi samaacharee ghat maahi tiaagee ||2||

Such is the understanding revealed to me; within my heart, I have become a detached renunciate. ||2||


ਆਪੁ ਆਪ ਤੇ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਤੇਜ ਤੇਜੁ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥

आपु आप ते जानिआ तेज तेजु समाना ॥

Aapu aap te jaaniaa tej teju samaanaa ||

I have come to know my own self, and my light has merged in the Light.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਅਬ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਾ ॥੩॥੧੧॥

कहु कबीर अब जानिआ गोबिद मनु माना ॥३॥११॥

Kahu kabeer ab jaaniaa gobid manu maanaa ||3||11||

Says Kabeer, now I know the Lord of the Universe, and my mind is satisfied. ||3||11||

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸਹਿ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੇਵ ॥

चरन कमल जा कै रिदै बसहि सो जनु किउ डोलै देव ॥

Charan kamal jaa kai ridai basahi so janu kiu dolai dev ||

When Your Lotus Feet dwell within one's heart, why should that person waver, O Divine Lord?

ਮਾਨੌ ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਜਸੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਦੇਵ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मानौ सभ सुख नउ निधि ता कै सहजि सहजि जसु बोलै देव ॥ रहाउ ॥

Maanau sabh sukh nau nidhi taa kai sahaji sahaji jasu bolai dev || rahaau ||

I know that all comforts, and the nine treasures, come to one who intuitively, naturally, chants the Praise of the Divine Lord. || Pause ||


ਤਬ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਜਉ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖੈ ਕੁਟਿਲ ਗਾਂਠਿ ਜਬ ਖੋਲੈ ਦੇਵ ॥

तब इह मति जउ सभ महि पेखै कुटिल गांठि जब खोलै देव ॥

Tab ih mati jau sabh mahi pekhai kutil gaanthi jab kholai dev ||

Such wisdom comes, only when one sees the Lord in all, and unties the knot of hypocrisy.

ਬਾਰੰ ਬਾਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਅਟਕੈ ਲੈ ਨਰਜਾ ਮਨੁ ਤੋਲੈ ਦੇਵ ॥੧॥

बारं बार माइआ ते अटकै लै नरजा मनु तोलै देव ॥१॥

Baarann baar maaiaa te atakai lai narajaa manu tolai dev ||1||

Time and time again, he must hold himself back from Maya; let him take the scale of the Lord, and weigh his mind. ||1||


ਜਹ ਉਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਤਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਤਾਸੁ ਨ ਝੋਲੈ ਦੇਵ ॥

जह उहु जाइ तही सुखु पावै माइआ तासु न झोलै देव ॥

Jah uhu jaai tahee sukhu paavai maaiaa taasu na jholai dev ||

Then wherever he goes, he will find peace, and Maya will not shake him.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕੀਓ ਲੈ ਦੇਵ ॥੨॥੧੨॥

कहि कबीर मेरा मनु मानिआ राम प्रीति कीओ लै देव ॥२॥१२॥

Kahi kabeer meraa manu maaniaa raam preeti keeo lai dev ||2||12||

Says Kabeer, my mind believes in the Lord; I am absorbed in the Love of the Divine Lord. ||2||12||

ਸੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

संतु मिलै किछु सुनीऐ कहीऐ ॥

Santtu milai kichhu suneeai kaheeai ||

When you meet a Saint, talk to him and listen.

ਮਿਲੈ ਅਸੰਤੁ ਮਸਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥

मिलै असंतु मसटि करि रहीऐ ॥१॥

Milai asanttu masati kari raheeai ||1||

Meeting with an unsaintly person, just remain silent. ||1||


ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

बाबा बोलना किआ कहीऐ ॥

Baabaa bolanaa kiaa kaheeai ||

O father, if I speak, what words should I utter?

ਜੈਸੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जैसे राम नाम रवि रहीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jaise raam naam ravi raheeai ||1|| rahaau ||

Speak such words, by which you may remain absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸੰਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਬੋਲੇ ਉਪਕਾਰੀ ॥

संतन सिउ बोले उपकारी ॥

Santtan siu bole upakaaree ||

Speaking with the Saints, one becomes generous.

ਮੂਰਖ ਸਿਉ ਬੋਲੇ ਝਖ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

मूरख सिउ बोले झख मारी ॥२॥

Moorakh siu bole jhakh maaree ||2||

To speak with a fool is to babble uselessly. ||2||


ਬੋਲਤ ਬੋਲਤ ਬਢਹਿ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥

बोलत बोलत बढहि बिकारा ॥

Bolat bolat badhahi bikaaraa ||

By speaking and only speaking, corruption only increases.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

बिनु बोले किआ करहि बीचारा ॥३॥

Binu bole kiaa karahi beechaaraa ||3||

If I do not speak, what can the poor wretch do? ||3||


ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਛੂਛਾ ਘਟੁ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

कहु कबीर छूछा घटु बोलै ॥

Kahu kabeer chhoochhaa ghatu bolai ||

Says Kabeer, the empty pitcher makes noise,

ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

भरिआ होइ सु कबहु न डोलै ॥४॥१॥

Bhariaa hoi su kabahu na dolai ||4||1||

But that which is full makes no sound. ||4||1||

Gond:

ਨਰੂ ਮਰੈ ਨਰੁ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

नरू मरै नरु कामि न आवै ॥

Naroo marai naru kaami na aavai ||

When a man dies, he is of no use to anyone.

ਪਸੂ ਮਰੈ ਦਸ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੈ ॥੧॥

पसू मरै दस काज सवारै ॥१॥

Pasoo marai das kaaj savaarai ||1||

But when an animal dies, it is used in ten ways. ||1||


ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮੈ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨਉ ॥

अपने करम की गति मै किआ जानउ ॥

Apane karam kee gati mai kiaa jaanau ||

What do I know, about the state of my karma?

ਮੈ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨਉ ਬਾਬਾ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मै किआ जानउ बाबा रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mai kiaa jaanau baabaa re ||1|| rahaau ||

What do I know, O Baba? ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਾਡ ਜਲੇ ਜੈਸੇ ਲਕਰੀ ਕਾ ਤੂਲਾ ॥

हाड जले जैसे लकरी का तूला ॥

Haad jale jaise lakaree kaa toolaa ||

His bones burn, like a bundle of logs;

ਕੇਸ ਜਲੇ ਜੈਸੇ ਘਾਸ ਕਾ ਪੂਲਾ ॥੨॥

केस जले जैसे घास का पूला ॥२॥

Kes jale jaise ghaas kaa poolaa ||2||

His hair burns like a bale of hay. ||2||


ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਨਰੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥

कहु कबीर तब ही नरु जागै ॥

Kahu kabeer tab hee naru jaagai ||

Says Kabeer, the man wakes up,

ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਮੂੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੩॥੨॥

जम का डंडु मूंड महि लागै ॥३॥२॥

Jam kaa danddu moondd mahi laagai ||3||2||

Only when the Messenger of Death hits him over the head with his club. ||3||2||

ਆਕਾਸਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਹੈ ਚਹੁ ਦਿਸਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਰਹਾਇਲੇ ॥

आकासि गगनु पातालि गगनु है चहु दिसि गगनु रहाइले ॥

Aakaasi gaganu paataali gaganu hai chahu disi gaganu rahaaile ||

The Celestial Lord is in the Akaashic ethers of the skies, the Celestial Lord is in the nether regions of the underworld; in the four directions, the Celestial Lord is pervading.

ਆਨਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮੁ ਘਟੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਗਗਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਇਲੇ ॥੧॥

आनद मूलु सदा पुरखोतमु घटु बिनसै गगनु न जाइले ॥१॥

Aanad moolu sadaa purakhotamu ghatu binasai gaganu na jaaile ||1||

The Supreme Lord God is forever the source of bliss. When the vessel of the body perishes, the Celestial Lord does not perish. ||1||


ਮੋਹਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਭਇਓ ॥

मोहि बैरागु भइओ ॥

Mohi bairaagu bhaio ||

I have become sad,

ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਆਇ ਕਹਾ ਗਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

इहु जीउ आइ कहा गइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ihu jeeu aai kahaa gaio ||1|| rahaau ||

Wondering where the soul comes from, and where it goes. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨੑੀ ਤਤੁ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਕੀਨੁ ਰੇ ॥

पंच ततु मिलि काइआ कीन्ही ततु कहा ते कीनु रे ॥

Pancch tatu mili kaaiaa keenhee tatu kahaa te keenu re ||

The body is formed from the union of the five tattvas; but where were the five tattvas created?

ਕਰਮ ਬਧ ਤੁਮ ਜੀਉ ਕਹਤ ਹੌ ਕਰਮਹਿ ਕਿਨਿ ਜੀਉ ਦੀਨੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥

करम बध तुम जीउ कहत हौ करमहि किनि जीउ दीनु रे ॥२॥

Karam badh tum jeeu kahat hau karamahi kini jeeu deenu re ||2||

You say that the soul is tied to its karma, but who gave karma to the body? ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਮਹਿ ਤਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਸੋਇ ਰੇ ॥

हरि महि तनु है तन महि हरि है सरब निरंतरि सोइ रे ॥

Hari mahi tanu hai tan mahi hari hai sarab niranttari soi re ||

The body is contained in the Lord, and the Lord is contained in the body. He is permeating within all.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਉ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਰੇ ॥੩॥੩॥

कहि कबीर राम नामु न छोडउ सहजे होइ सु होइ रे ॥३॥३॥

Kahi kabeer raam naamu na chhodau sahaje hoi su hoi re ||3||3||

Says Kabeer, I shall not renounce the Lord's Name. I shall accept whatever happens. ||3||3||

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਭੁਜਾ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਭਿਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰਿਓ ॥

भुजा बांधि भिला करि डारिओ ॥

Bhujaa baandhi bhilaa kari daario ||

They tied my arms, bundled me up, and threw me before an elephant.

ਹਸਤੀ ਕ੍ਰੋਪਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥

हसती क्रोपि मूंड महि मारिओ ॥

Hasatee kropi moondd mahi maario ||

The elephant driver struck him on the head, and infuriated him.

ਹਸਤਿ ਭਾਗਿ ਕੈ ਚੀਸਾ ਮਾਰੈ ॥

हसति भागि कै चीसा मारै ॥

Hasati bhaagi kai cheesaa maarai ||

But the elephant ran away, trumpeting,

ਇਆ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ॥੧॥

इआ मूरति कै हउ बलिहारै ॥१॥

Iaa moorati kai hau balihaarai ||1||

"I am a sacrifice to this image of the Lord." ||1||


ਆਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੁਮਰਾ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

आहि मेरे ठाकुर तुमरा जोरु ॥

Aahi mere thaakur tumaraa joru ||

O my Lord and Master, You are my strength.

ਕਾਜੀ ਬਕਿਬੋ ਹਸਤੀ ਤੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

काजी बकिबो हसती तोरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kaajee bakibo hasatee toru ||1|| rahaau ||

The Qazi shouted at the driver to drive the elephant on. ||1|| Pause ||


ਰੇ ਮਹਾਵਤ ਤੁਝੁ ਡਾਰਉ ਕਾਟਿ ॥

रे महावत तुझु डारउ काटि ॥

Re mahaavat tujhu daarau kaati ||

He yelled out, ""O driver, I shall cut you into pieces.

ਇਸਹਿ ਤੁਰਾਵਹੁ ਘਾਲਹੁ ਸਾਟਿ ॥

इसहि तुरावहु घालहु साटि ॥

Isahi turaavahu ghaalahu saati ||

Hit him, and drive him on!""

ਹਸਤਿ ਨ ਤੋਰੈ ਧਰੈ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

हसति न तोरै धरै धिआनु ॥

Hasati na torai dharai dhiaanu ||

But the elephant did not move; instead, he began to meditate.

ਵਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਬਸੈ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥

वा कै रिदै बसै भगवानु ॥२॥

Vaa kai ridai basai bhagavaanu ||2||

The Lord God abides within his mind. ||2||


ਕਿਆ ਅਪਰਾਧੁ ਸੰਤ ਹੈ ਕੀਨੑਾ ॥

किआ अपराधु संत है कीन्हा ॥

Kiaa aparaadhu santt hai keenhaa ||

What sin has this Saint committed,

ਬਾਂਧਿ ਪੋਟ ਕੁੰਚਰ ਕਉ ਦੀਨੑਾ ॥

बांधि पोट कुंचर कउ दीन्हा ॥

Baandhi pot kuncchar kau deenhaa ||

That you have made him into a bundle and thrown him before the elephant?

ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਪੋਟ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੈ ॥

कुंचरु पोट लै लै नमसकारै ॥

Kunccharu pot lai lai namasakaarai ||

Lifting up the bundle, the elephant bows down before it.

ਬੂਝੀ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਜੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੈ ॥੩॥

बूझी नही काजी अंधिआरै ॥३॥

Boojhee nahee kaajee anddhiaarai ||3||

The Qazi could not understand it; he was blind. ||3||


ਤੀਨਿ ਬਾਰ ਪਤੀਆ ਭਰਿ ਲੀਨਾ ॥

तीनि बार पतीआ भरि लीना ॥

Teeni baar pateeaa bhari leenaa ||

Three times, he tried to do it.

ਮਨ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਅਜਹੂ ਨ ਪਤੀਨਾ ॥

मन कठोरु अजहू न पतीना ॥

Man kathoru ajahoo na pateenaa ||

Even then, his hardened mind was not satisfied.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਮਰਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ॥

कहि कबीर हमरा गोबिंदु ॥

Kahi kabeer hamaraa gobinddu ||

Says Kabeer, such is my Lord and Master.

ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਹਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਜਿੰਦੁ ॥੪॥੧॥੪॥

चउथे पद महि जन की जिंदु ॥४॥१॥४॥

Chauthe pad mahi jan kee jinddu ||4||1||4||

The soul of His humble servant dwells in the fourth state. ||4||1||4||

Gond:

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਮਾਨਸੁ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਦੇਉ ॥

ना इहु मानसु ना इहु देउ ॥

Naa ihu maanasu naa ihu deu ||

It is not human, and it is not a god.

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੇਉ ॥

ना इहु जती कहावै सेउ ॥

Naa ihu jatee kahaavai seu ||

It is not called celibate, or a worshipper of Shiva.

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਨਾ ਅਵਧੂਤਾ ॥

ना इहु जोगी ना अवधूता ॥

Naa ihu jogee naa avadhootaa ||

It is not a Yogi, and it is not a hermit.

ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਇ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਪੂਤਾ ॥੧॥

ना इसु माइ न काहू पूता ॥१॥

Naa isu maai na kaahoo pootaa ||1||

It is not a mother, or anyone's son. ||1||


ਇਆ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਕੌਨ ਬਸਾਈ ॥

इआ मंदर महि कौन बसाई ॥

Iaa manddar mahi kaun basaaee ||

Then what is it, which dwells in this temple of the body?

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ता का अंतु न कोऊ पाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Taa kaa anttu na kou paaee ||1|| rahaau ||

No one can find its limits. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਨਾ ਓਦਾਸੀ ॥

ना इहु गिरही ना ओदासी ॥

Naa ihu girahee naa odaasee ||

It is not a house-holder, and it is not a renouncer of the world.

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਜ ਨ ਭੀਖ ਮੰਗਾਸੀ ॥

ना इहु राज न भीख मंगासी ॥

Naa ihu raaj na bheekh manggaasee ||

It is not a king, and it is not a beggar.

ਨਾ ਇਸੁ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਨ ਰਕਤੂ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

ना इसु पिंडु न रकतू राती ॥

Naa isu pinddu na rakatoo raatee ||

It has no body, no drop of blood.

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨੁ ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਖਾਤੀ ॥੨॥

ना इहु ब्रहमनु ना इहु खाती ॥२॥

Naa ihu brhamanu naa ihu khaatee ||2||

It is not a Brahmin, and it is not a Kshatriya. ||2||


ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਪਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੇਖੁ ॥

ना इहु तपा कहावै सेखु ॥

Naa ihu tapaa kahaavai sekhu ||

It is not called a man of austere self-discipline, or a Shaykh.

ਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਵੈ ਨ ਮਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੁ ॥

ना इहु जीवै न मरता देखु ॥

Naa ihu jeevai na marataa dekhu ||

It does not live, and it is not seen to die.

ਇਸੁ ਮਰਤੇ ਕਉ ਜੇ ਕੋਊ ਰੋਵੈ ॥

इसु मरते कउ जे कोऊ रोवै ॥

Isu marate kau je kou rovai ||

If someone cries over its death,

ਜੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵੈ ॥੩॥

जो रोवै सोई पति खोवै ॥३॥

Jo rovai soee pati khovai ||3||

That person loses his honor. ||3||


ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੈ ਡਗਰੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

गुर प्रसादि मै डगरो पाइआ ॥

Gur prsaadi mai dagaro paaiaa ||

By Guru's Grace, I have found the Path.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਨੁ ਦੋਊ ਮਿਟਵਾਇਆ ॥

जीवन मरनु दोऊ मिटवाइआ ॥

Jeevan maranu dou mitavaaiaa ||

Birth and death have both been erased.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਅੰਸੁ ॥

कहु कबीर इहु राम की अंसु ॥

Kahu kabeer ihu raam kee anssu ||

Says Kabeer, this is formed of the same essence as the Lord.

ਜਸ ਕਾਗਦ ਪਰ ਮਿਟੈ ਨ ਮੰਸੁ ॥੪॥੨॥੫॥

जस कागद पर मिटै न मंसु ॥४॥२॥५॥

Jas kaagad par mitai na manssu ||4||2||5||

It is like the ink on the paper which cannot be erased. ||4||2||5||

ਤੂਟੇ ਤਾਗੇ ਨਿਖੁਟੀ ਪਾਨਿ ॥

तूटे तागे निखुटी पानि ॥

Toote taage nikhutee paani ||

The threads are broken, and the starch has run out.

ਦੁਆਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਝਿਲਕਾਵਹਿ ਕਾਨ ॥

दुआर ऊपरि झिलकावहि कान ॥

Duaar upari jhilakaavahi kaan ||

Bare reeds glisten at the front door.

ਕੂਚ ਬਿਚਾਰੇ ਫੂਏ ਫਾਲ ॥

कूच बिचारे फूए फाल ॥

Kooch bichaare phooe phaal ||

The poor brushes are scattered in pieces.

ਇਆ ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਚਢਿਬੋ ਕਾਲ ॥੧॥

इआ मुंडीआ सिरि चढिबो काल ॥१॥

Iaa munddeeaa siri chadhibo kaal ||1||

Death has entered this shaven head. ||1||


ਇਹੁ ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਸਗਲੋ ਦ੍ਰਬੁ ਖੋਈ ॥

इहु मुंडीआ सगलो द्रबु खोई ॥

Ihu munddeeaa sagalo drbu khoee ||

This shaven-headed mendicant has wasted all his wealth.

ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨਾਕ ਸਰ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

आवत जात नाक सर होई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aavat jaat naak sar hoee ||1|| rahaau ||

All this coming and going has irritated him. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤੁਰੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਕੀ ਛੋਡੀ ਬਾਤਾ ॥

तुरी नारि की छोडी बाता ॥

Turee naari kee chhodee baataa ||

He has given up all talk of his weaving equipment.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਵਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥

राम नाम वा का मनु राता ॥

Raam naam vaa kaa manu raataa ||

His mind is attuned to the Lord's Name.

ਲਰਿਕੀ ਲਰਿਕਨ ਖੈਬੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

लरिकी लरिकन खैबो नाहि ॥

Larikee larikan khaibo naahi ||

His daughters and sons have nothing to eat,

ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਧਾਪੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

मुंडीआ अनदिनु धापे जाहि ॥२॥

Munddeeaa anadinu dhaape jaahi ||2||

While the shaven-headed mendicants night and day eat their fill. ||2||


ਇਕ ਦੁਇ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਇਕ ਦੁਇ ਬਾਟ ॥

इक दुइ मंदरि इक दुइ बाट ॥

Ik dui manddari ik dui baat ||

One or two are in the house, and one or two more are on the way.

ਹਮ ਕਉ ਸਾਥਰੁ ਉਨ ਕਉ ਖਾਟ ॥

हम कउ साथरु उन कउ खाट ॥

Ham kau saatharu un kau khaat ||

We sleep on the floor, while they sleep in the beds.

ਮੂਡ ਪਲੋਸਿ ਕਮਰ ਬਧਿ ਪੋਥੀ ॥

मूड पलोसि कमर बधि पोथी ॥

Mood palosi kamar badhi pothee ||

They rub their bare heads, and carry prayer-books in their waist-bands.

ਹਮ ਕਉ ਚਾਬਨੁ ਉਨ ਕਉ ਰੋਟੀ ॥੩॥

हम कउ चाबनु उन कउ रोटी ॥३॥

Ham kau chaabanu un kau rotee ||3||

We get dry grains, while they get loaves of bread. ||3||


ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਹੂਏ ਏਕ ॥

मुंडीआ मुंडीआ हूए एक ॥

Munddeeaa munddeeaa hooe ek ||

He will become one of these shaven-headed mendicants.

ਏ ਮੁੰਡੀਆ ਬੂਡਤ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥

ए मुंडीआ बूडत की टेक ॥

E munddeeaa boodat kee tek ||

They are the support of the drowning.

ਸੁਨਿ ਅੰਧਲੀ ਲੋਈ ਬੇਪੀਰਿ ॥

सुनि अंधली लोई बेपीरि ॥

Suni anddhalee loee bepeeri ||

Listen, O blind and unguided Loi:

ਇਨੑ ਮੁੰਡੀਅਨ ਭਜਿ ਸਰਨਿ ਕਬੀਰ ॥੪॥੩॥੬॥

इन्ह मुंडीअन भजि सरनि कबीर ॥४॥३॥६॥

Inh munddeean bhaji sarani kabeer ||4||3||6||

Kabeer has taken shelter with these shaven-headed mendicants. ||4||3||6||

ਖਸਮੁ ਮਰੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਰੋਵੈ ॥

खसमु मरै तउ नारि न रोवै ॥

Khasamu marai tau naari na rovai ||

When her husband dies, the woman does not cry.

ਉਸੁ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ਅਉਰੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

उसु रखवारा अउरो होवै ॥

Usu rakhavaaraa auro hovai ||

Someone else becomes her protector.

ਰਖਵਾਰੇ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥

रखवारे का होइ बिनास ॥

Rakhavaare kaa hoi binaas ||

When this protector dies,

ਆਗੈ ਨਰਕੁ ਈਹਾ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ ॥੧॥

आगै नरकु ईहा भोग बिलास ॥१॥

Aagai naraku eehaa bhog bilaas ||1||

He falls into the world of hell hereafter, for the sexual pleasures he enjoyed in this world. ||1||


ਏਕ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

एक सुहागनि जगत पिआरी ॥

Ek suhaagani jagat piaaree ||

The world loves only the one bride, Maya.

ਸਗਲੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕੀ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सगले जीअ जंत की नारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sagale jeea jantt kee naaree ||1|| rahaau ||

She is the wife of all beings and creatures. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਗਲਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਹਾਰੁ ॥

सोहागनि गलि सोहै हारु ॥

Sohaagani gali sohai haaru ||

With her necklace around her neck, this bride looks beautiful.

ਸੰਤ ਕਉ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

संत कउ बिखु बिगसै संसारु ॥

Santt kau bikhu bigasai sanssaaru ||

She is poison to the Saint, but the world is delighted with her.

ਕਰਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਬਹੈ ਪਖਿਆਰੀ ॥

करि सीगारु बहै पखिआरी ॥

Kari seegaaru bahai pakhiaaree ||

Adorning herself, she sits like a prostitute.

ਸੰਤ ਕੀ ਠਿਠਕੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਬਿਚਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

संत की ठिठकी फिरै बिचारी ॥२॥

Santt kee thithakee phirai bichaaree ||2||

Cursed by the Saints, she wanders around like a wretch. ||2||


ਸੰਤ ਭਾਗਿ ਓਹ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਰੈ ॥

संत भागि ओह पाछै परै ॥

Santt bhaagi oh paachhai parai ||

She runs around, chasing after the Saints.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਾਰਹੁ ਡਰੈ ॥

गुर परसादी मारहु डरै ॥

Gur parasaadee maarahu darai ||

She is afraid of being beaten by those blessed with the Guru's Grace.

ਸਾਕਤ ਕੀ ਓਹ ਪਿੰਡ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ॥

साकत की ओह पिंड पराइणि ॥

Saakat kee oh pindd paraai(nn)i ||

She is the body, the breath of life, of the faithless cynics.

ਹਮ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਖਿ ਡਾਇਣਿ ॥੩॥

हम कउ द्रिसटि परै त्रखि डाइणि ॥३॥

Ham kau drisati parai trkhi daai(nn)i ||3||

She appears to me like a blood-thirsty witch. ||3||


ਹਮ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਬਹੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਭੇਉ ॥

हम तिस का बहु जानिआ भेउ ॥

Ham tis kaa bahu jaaniaa bheu ||

I know her secrets well

ਜਬ ਹੂਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ॥

जब हूए क्रिपाल मिले गुरदेउ ॥

Jab hooe kripaal mile guradeu ||

In His Mercy, the Divine Guru met me.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਅਬ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪਰੀ ॥

कहु कबीर अब बाहरि परी ॥

Kahu kabeer ab baahari paree ||

Says Kabeer, now I have thrown her out.

ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ਕੈ ਅੰਚਲਿ ਲਰੀ ॥੪॥੪॥੭॥

संसारै कै अंचलि लरी ॥४॥४॥७॥

Sanssaarai kai ancchali laree ||4||4||7||

She clings to the skirt of the world. ||4||4||7||

ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰੇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

ग्रिहि सोभा जा कै रे नाहि ॥

Grihi sobhaa jaa kai re naahi ||

When someone's household has no glory

ਆਵਤ ਪਹੀਆ ਖੂਧੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

आवत पहीआ खूधे जाहि ॥

Aavat paheeaa khoodhe jaahi ||

The guests who come there depart still hungry.

ਵਾ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥

वा कै अंतरि नही संतोखु ॥

Vaa kai anttari nahee santtokhu ||

Deep within, there is no contentment.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਦੋਖੁ ॥੧॥

बिनु सोहागनि लागै दोखु ॥१॥

Binu sohaagani laagai dokhu ||1||

Without his bride, the wealth of Maya, he suffers in pain. ||1||


ਧਨੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਮਹਾ ਪਵੀਤ ॥

धनु सोहागनि महा पवीत ॥

Dhanu sohaagani mahaa paveet ||

who can shake the consciousness of even the most dedicated ascetics and sages. ||1||Pause||


ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਤੀ ॥

सोहागनि किरपन की पूती ॥

Sohaagani kirapan kee pootee ||

This bride is the daughter of a wretched miser.

ਸੇਵਕ ਤਜਿ ਜਗਤ ਸਿਉ ਸੂਤੀ ॥

सेवक तजि जगत सिउ सूती ॥

Sevak taji jagat siu sootee ||

Abandoning the Lord's servant, she sleeps with the world.

ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਠਾਢੀ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

साधू कै ठाढी दरबारि ॥

Saadhoo kai thaadhee darabaari ||

Standing at the door of the holy man,

ਸਰਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

सरनि तेरी मो कउ निसतारि ॥२॥

Sarani teree mo kau nisataari ||2||

She says, ""I have come to your sanctuary; now save me!"" ||2||


ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਹੈ ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰੀ ॥

सोहागनि है अति सुंदरी ॥

Sohaagani hai ati sunddaree ||

This bride is so beautiful.

ਪਗ ਨੇਵਰ ਛਨਕ ਛਨਹਰੀ ॥

पग नेवर छनक छनहरी ॥

Pag nevar chhanak chhanaharee ||

The bells on her ankles make soft music.

ਜਉ ਲਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਊ ਲਗੁ ਸੰਗੇ ॥

जउ लगु प्रान तऊ लगु संगे ॥

Jau lagu praan tau lagu sangge ||

As long as there is the breath of life in the man, she remains attached to him.

ਨਾਹਿ ਤ ਚਲੀ ਬੇਗਿ ਉਠਿ ਨੰਗੇ ॥੩॥

नाहि त चली बेगि उठि नंगे ॥३॥

Naahi ta chalee begi uthi nangge ||3||

But when it is no more, she quickly gets up and departs, bare-footed. ||3||


ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੀਆ ॥

सोहागनि भवन त्रै लीआ ॥

Sohaagani bhavan trai leeaa ||

This bride has conquered the three worlds.

ਦਸ ਅਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਤੀਰਥ ਰਸ ਕੀਆ ॥

दस अठ पुराण तीरथ रस कीआ ॥

Das ath puraa(nn) teerath ras keeaa ||

The eighteen Puraanas and the sacred shrines of pilgrimage love her as well.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸਰ ਬੇਧੇ ॥

ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसर बेधे ॥

Brhamaa bisanu mahesar bedhe ||

She pierced the hearts of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu.

ਬਡੇ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਹੈ ਛੇਧੇ ॥੪॥

बडे भूपति राजे है छेधे ॥४॥

Bade bhoopati raaje hai chhedhe ||4||

She destroyed the great emperors and kings of the world. ||4||


ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

सोहागनि उरवारि न पारि ॥

Sohaagani uravaari na paari ||

This bride has no restraint or limits.

ਪਾਂਚ ਨਾਰਦ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਧਵਾਰਿ ॥

पांच नारद कै संगि बिधवारि ॥

Paanch naarad kai sanggi bidhavaari ||

She is in collusion with the five thieving passions.

ਪਾਂਚ ਨਾਰਦ ਕੇ ਮਿਟਵੇ ਫੂਟੇ ॥

पांच नारद के मिटवे फूटे ॥

Paanch naarad ke mitave phoote ||

When the clay pot of these five passions bursts,

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਛੂਟੇ ॥੫॥੫॥੮॥

कहु कबीर गुर किरपा छूटे ॥५॥५॥८॥

Kahu kabeer gur kirapaa chhoote ||5||5||8||

Then, says Kabeer, by Guru's Mercy, one is released. ||5||5||8||

ਜੈਸੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਬਲਹਰ ਨਾ ਠਾਹਰੈ ॥

जैसे मंदर महि बलहर ना ठाहरै ॥

Jaise manddar mahi balahar naa thaaharai ||

As the house will not stand when the supporting beams are removed from within it,

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰੈ ॥

नाम बिना कैसे पारि उतरै ॥

Naam binaa kaise paari utarai ||

Just so, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone be carried across?

ਕੁੰਭ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਟੀਕਾਵੈ ॥

कु्मभ बिना जलु ना टीकावै ॥

Kumbbh binaa jalu naa teekaavai ||

Without the pitcher, the water is not contained;

ਸਾਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਐਸੇ ਅਬਗਤੁ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

साधू बिनु ऐसे अबगतु जावै ॥१॥

Saadhoo binu aise abagatu jaavai ||1||

Just so, without the Holy Saint, the mortal departs in misery. ||1||


ਜਾਰਉ ਤਿਸੈ ਜੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ॥

जारउ तिसै जु रामु न चेतै ॥

Jaarau tisai ju raamu na chetai ||

One who does not remember the Lord - let him burn;

ਤਨ ਮਨ ਰਮਤ ਰਹੈ ਮਹਿ ਖੇਤੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तन मन रमत रहै महि खेतै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tan man ramat rahai mahi khetai ||1|| rahaau ||

His body and mind have remained absorbed in this field of the world. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜੈਸੇ ਹਲਹਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਜਿਮੀ ਨਹੀ ਬੋਈਐ ॥

जैसे हलहर बिना जिमी नही बोईऐ ॥

Jaise halahar binaa jimee nahee boeeai ||

Without a farmer, the land is not planted;

ਸੂਤ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਮਣੀ ਪਰੋਈਐ ॥

सूत बिना कैसे मणी परोईऐ ॥

Soot binaa kaise ma(nn)ee paroeeai ||

Without a thread, how can the beads be strung?

ਘੁੰਡੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਗੰਠਿ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਐ ॥

घुंडी बिनु किआ गंठि चड़्हाईऐ ॥

Ghunddee binu kiaa gantthi cha(rr)haaeeai ||

Without a loop, how can the knot be tied?

ਸਾਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੈਸੇ ਅਬਗਤੁ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

साधू बिनु तैसे अबगतु जाईऐ ॥२॥

Saadhoo binu taise abagatu jaaeeai ||2||

Just so, without the Holy Saint, the mortal departs in misery. ||2||


ਜੈਸੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਲੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

जैसे मात पिता बिनु बालु न होई ॥

Jaise maat pitaa binu baalu na hoee ||

Without a mother or father there is no child;

ਬਿੰਬ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਕਪਰੇ ਧੋਈ ॥

बि्मब बिना कैसे कपरे धोई ॥

Bimbb binaa kaise kapare dhoee ||

Just so, without water, how can the clothes be washed?

ਘੋਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਅਸਵਾਰ ॥

घोर बिना कैसे असवार ॥

Ghor binaa kaise asavaar ||

Without a horse, how can there be a rider?

ਸਾਧੂ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦਰਵਾਰ ॥੩॥

साधू बिनु नाही दरवार ॥३॥

Saadhoo binu naahee daravaar ||3||

Without the Holy Saint, one cannot reach the Court of the Lord. ||3||


ਜੈਸੇ ਬਾਜੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਫੇਰੀ ॥

जैसे बाजे बिनु नही लीजै फेरी ॥

Jaise baaje binu nahee leejai pheree ||

Just as without music, there is no dancing,

ਖਸਮਿ ਦੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਤਜਿ ਅਉਹੇਰੀ ॥

खसमि दुहागनि तजि अउहेरी ॥

Khasami duhaagani taji auheree ||

The bride rejected by her husband is dishonored.

ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਏਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਨਾ ॥

कहै कबीरु एकै करि करना ॥

Kahai kabeeru ekai kari karanaa ||

Says Kabeer, do this one thing:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਨਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੯॥

गुरमुखि होइ बहुरि नही मरना ॥४॥६॥९॥

Guramukhi hoi bahuri nahee maranaa ||4||6||9||

Become Gurmukh, and you shall never die again. ||4||6||9||

ਕੂਟਨੁ ਸੋਇ ਜੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਕੂਟੈ ॥

कूटनु सोइ जु मन कउ कूटै ॥

Kootanu soi ju man kau kootai ||

He alone is a pimp, who pounds down his mind.

ਮਨ ਕੂਟੈ ਤਉ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ॥

मन कूटै तउ जम ते छूटै ॥

Man kootai tau jam te chhootai ||

Pounding down his mind, he escapes from the Messenger of Death.

ਕੁਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਮਨੁ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਵੈ ॥

कुटि कुटि मनु कसवटी लावै ॥

Kuti kuti manu kasavatee laavai ||

Pounding and beating his mind, he puts it to the test;

ਸੋ ਕੂਟਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

सो कूटनु मुकति बहु पावै ॥१॥

So kootanu mukati bahu paavai ||1||

Such a pimp attains total liberation. ||1||


ਕੂਟਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਕਹਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰ ॥

कूटनु किसै कहहु संसार ॥

Kootanu kisai kahahu sanssaar ||

Who is called a pimp in this world?

ਸਗਲ ਬੋਲਨ ਕੇ ਮਾਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सगल बोलन के माहि बीचार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sagal bolan ke maahi beechaar ||1|| rahaau ||

In all speech, one must carefully consider. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਾਚਨੁ ਸੋਇ ਜੁ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਚੈ ॥

नाचनु सोइ जु मन सिउ नाचै ॥

Naachanu soi ju man siu naachai ||

He alone is a dancer, who dances with his mind.

ਝੂਠਿ ਨ ਪਤੀਐ ਪਰਚੈ ਸਾਚੈ ॥

झूठि न पतीऐ परचै साचै ॥

Jhoothi na pateeai parachai saachai ||

The Lord is not satisfied with falsehood; He is pleased only with Truth.

ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਆਗੇ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਾਲ ॥

इसु मन आगे पूरै ताल ॥

Isu man aage poorai taal ||

So play the beat of the drum in the mind.

ਇਸੁ ਨਾਚਨ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਰਖਵਾਲ ॥੨॥

इसु नाचन के मन रखवाल ॥२॥

Isu naachan ke man rakhavaal ||2||

The Lord is the Protector of the dancer with such a mind. ||2||


ਬਜਾਰੀ ਸੋ ਜੁ ਬਜਾਰਹਿ ਸੋਧੈ ॥

बजारी सो जु बजारहि सोधै ॥

Bajaaree so ju bajaarahi sodhai ||

She alone is a street-dancer, who cleanses her body-street,

ਪਾਂਚ ਪਲੀਤਹ ਕਉ ਪਰਬੋਧੈ ॥

पांच पलीतह कउ परबोधै ॥

Paanch paleetah kau parabodhai ||

And educates the five passions.

ਨਉ ਨਾਇਕ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥

नउ नाइक की भगति पछानै ॥

Nau naaik kee bhagati pachhaanai ||

She who embraces devotional worship for the Lord

ਸੋ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ ਹਮ ਗੁਰ ਮਾਨੇ ॥੩॥

सो बाजारी हम गुर माने ॥३॥

So baajaaree ham gur maane ||3||

- I accept such a street-dancer as my Guru. ||3||


ਤਸਕਰੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਿ ਤਾਤਿ ਨ ਕਰੈ ॥

तसकरु सोइ जि ताति न करै ॥

Tasakaru soi ji taati na karai ||

He alone is a thief, who is above envy,

ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਕੈ ਜਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਰੈ ॥

इंद्री कै जतनि नामु उचरै ॥

Ianddree kai jatani naamu ucharai ||

And who uses his sense organs to chant the Lord's Name.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਮ ਐਸੇ ਲਖਨ ॥

कहु कबीर हम ऐसे लखन ॥

Kahu kabeer ham aise lakhan ||

Says Kabeer, these are the qualities of the one

ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਅਤਿ ਰੂਪ ਬਿਚਖਨ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੦॥

धंनु गुरदेव अति रूप बिचखन ॥४॥७॥१०॥

Dhannu guradev ati roop bichakhan ||4||7||10||

I know as my Blessed Divine Guru, who is the most beautiful and wise. ||4||7||10||

Blessed is the Lord of the World. Blessed is the Divine Guru.

ਧੰਨੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਭੂਖੇ ਕਵਲੁ ਟਹਕੇਵ ॥

धंनु अनादि भूखे कवलु टहकेव ॥

Dhannu anaadi bhookhe kavalu tahakev ||

Blessed is that grain, by which the heart-lotus of the hungry blossoms forth.

ਧਨੁ ਓਇ ਸੰਤ ਜਿਨ ਐਸੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

धनु ओइ संत जिन ऐसी जानी ॥

Dhanu oi santt jin aisee jaanee ||

Blessed are those Saints, who know this.

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਬੋ ਸਾਰਿੰਗਪਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

तिन कउ मिलिबो सारिंगपानी ॥१॥

Tin kau milibo saaringgapaanee ||1||

Meeting with them, one meets the Lord, the Sustainer of the World. ||1||


ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਅਨਾਦਿ ॥

आदि पुरख ते होइ अनादि ॥

Aadi purakh te hoi anaadi ||

This grain comes from the Primal Lord God.

ਜਪੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਨ ਕੈ ਸਾਦਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जपीऐ नामु अंन कै सादि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Japeeai naamu ann kai saadi ||1|| rahaau ||

One chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, only when he tastes this grain. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਪੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਅੰਨੁ ॥

जपीऐ नामु जपीऐ अंनु ॥

Japeeai naamu japeeai annu ||

Meditate on the Naam, and meditate on this grain.

ਅੰਭੈ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨੀਕਾ ਵੰਨੁ ॥

अ्मभै कै संगि नीका वंनु ॥

Ambbhai kai sanggi neekaa vannu ||

Mixed with water, its taste becomes sublime.

ਅੰਨੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜੋ ਨਰ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥

अंनै बाहरि जो नर होवहि ॥

Annai baahari jo nar hovahi ||

One who abstains from this grain,

ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਨ ਮਹਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਖੋਵਹਿ ॥੨॥

तीनि भवन महि अपनी खोवहि ॥२॥

Teeni bhavan mahi apanee khovahi ||2||

Loses his honor in the three worlds. ||2||


ਛੋਡਹਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਾਖੰਡ ॥

छोडहि अंनु करहि पाखंड ॥

Chhodahi annu karahi paakhandd ||

One who discards this grain, is practicing hypocrisy.

ਨਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਨਾ ਓਹਿ ਰੰਡ ॥

ना सोहागनि ना ओहि रंड ॥

Naa sohaagani naa ohi randd ||

She is neither a happy soul-bride, nor a widow.

ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਕਤੇ ਦੂਧਾਧਾਰੀ ॥

जग महि बकते दूधाधारी ॥

Jag mahi bakate doodhaadhaaree ||

Those who claim in this world that they live on milk alone,

ਗੁਪਤੀ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਵਟਿਕਾ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

गुपती खावहि वटिका सारी ॥३॥

Gupatee khaavahi vatikaa saaree ||3||

Secretly eat whole loads of food. ||3||


ਅੰਨੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਕਾਲੁ ॥

अंनै बिना न होइ सुकालु ॥

Annai binaa na hoi sukaalu ||

Without this grain, time does not pass in peace.

ਤਜਿਐ ਅੰਨਿ ਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਪਾਲੁ ॥

तजिऐ अंनि न मिलै गुपालु ॥

Tajiai anni na milai gupaalu ||

Forsaking this grain, one does not meet the Lord of the World.

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਮ ਐਸੇ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

कहु कबीर हम ऐसे जानिआ ॥

Kahu kabeer ham aise jaaniaa ||

Says Kabeer, this I know:

ਧੰਨੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੧॥

धंनु अनादि ठाकुर मनु मानिआ ॥४॥८॥११॥

Dhannu anaadi thaakur manu maaniaa ||4||8||11||

Blessed is that grain, which brings faith in the Lord and Master to the mind. ||4||8||11||

ਕਬੀਰ ਮਹਿਦੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਘਾਲਿਆ ਆਪੁ ਪੀਸਾਇ ਪੀਸਾਇ ॥

कबीर महिदी करि कै घालिआ आपु पीसाइ पीसाइ ॥

Kabeer mahidee kari kai ghaaliaa aapu peesaai peesaai ||

Kabeer, I have ground myself into henna paste.

ਤੈ ਸਹ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੀਆ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਲਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

तै सह बात न पुछीआ कबहू न लाई पाइ ॥१॥

Tai sah baat na puchheeaa kabahoo na laaee paai ||1||

O my Husband Lord, You took no notice of me; You never applied me to Your feet. ||1||

ਕਬੀਰ ਕਸਉਟੀ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਝੂਠਾ ਟਿਕੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

कबीर कसउटी राम की झूठा टिकै न कोइ ॥

Kabeer kasautee raam kee jhoothaa tikai na koi ||

Kabeer, such is the touchstone of the Lord; the false cannot even touch it.

ਰਾਮ ਕਸਉਟੀ ਸੋ ਸਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਰਜੀਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

राम कसउटी सो सहै जो मरजीवा होइ ॥१॥

Raam kasautee so sahai jo marajeevaa hoi ||1||

He alone passes this test of the Lord, who remains dead while yet alive. ||1||


ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ॥ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ

काइआ कलालनि लाहनि मेलउ गुर का सबदु गुड़ु कीनु रे ॥

Kaaiaa kalaalani laahani melau gur kaa sabadu gu(rr)u keenu re ||

Make your body the vat, and mix in the yeast. Let the Word of the Guru's Shabad be the molasses.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਦ ਮਤਸਰ ਕਾਟਿ ਕਾਟਿ ਕਸੁ ਦੀਨੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥

त्रिसना कामु क्रोधु मद मतसर काटि काटि कसु दीनु रे ॥१॥

Trisanaa kaamu krodhu mad matasar kaati kaati kasu deenu re ||1||

Cut up desire, sexuality, anger, pride and envy, and let them be the fermenting bark. ||1||


ਕੋਈ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਸੰਤੁ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਦੇਉ ਦਲਾਲੀ ਰੇ ॥

कोई है रे संतु सहज सुख अंतरि जा कउ जपु तपु देउ दलाली रे ॥

Koee hai re santtu sahaj sukh anttari jaa kau japu tapu deu dalaalee re ||

Is there any Saint, with intuitive peace and poise deep within, unto whom I might offer my meditation and austerities as payment?

ਏਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਭਰਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਵਉ ਜੋ ਮਦੁ ਦੇਇ ਕਲਾਲੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एक बूंद भरि तनु मनु देवउ जो मदु देइ कलाली रे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ek boondd bhari tanu manu devau jo madu dei kalaalee re ||1|| rahaau ||

I dedicate my body and mind to whoever gives me even a drop of this wine from such a vat. ||1|| Pause ||


ਭਵਨ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਸ ਭਾਠੀ ਕੀਨੑੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਜਾਰੀ ਰੇ ॥

भवन चतुर दस भाठी कीन्ही ब्रहम अगनि तनि जारी रे ॥

Bhavan chatur das bhaathee keenhee brham agani tani jaaree re ||

I have made the fourteen worlds the furnace, and I have burnt my body with the fire of God.

ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਦਕ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਸੁਖਮਨ ਪੋਚਨਹਾਰੀ ਰੇ ॥੨॥

मुद्रा मदक सहज धुनि लागी सुखमन पोचनहारी रे ॥२॥

Mudraa madak sahaj dhuni laagee sukhaman pochanahaaree re ||2||

My mudra - my hand-gesture, is the pipe; tuning into the celestial sound current within, the Shushmanaa - the central spinal channel, is my cooling pad. ||2||


ਤੀਰਥ ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਗਹਨੈ ਦੇਉ ਰੇ ॥

तीरथ बरत नेम सुचि संजम रवि ससि गहनै देउ रे ॥

Teerath barat nem suchi sanjjam ravi sasi gahanai deu re ||

Pilgrimages, fasting, vows, purifications, self-discipline, austerities and breath control through the sun and moon channels - all these I pledge.

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਿਆਲ ਸੁਧਾ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਏਹੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਪੇਉ ਰੇ ॥੩॥

सुरति पिआल सुधा रसु अम्रितु एहु महा रसु पेउ रे ॥३॥

Surati piaal sudhaa rasu ammmritu ehu mahaa rasu peu re ||3||

My focused consciousness is the cup, and the Ambrosial Nectar is the pure juice. I drink in the supreme, sublime essence of this juice. ||3||


ਨਿਝਰ ਧਾਰ ਚੁਐ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਇਹ ਰਸ ਮਨੂਆ ਰਾਤੋ ਰੇ ॥

निझर धार चुऐ अति निरमल इह रस मनूआ रातो रे ॥

Nijhar dhaar chuai ati niramal ih ras manooaa raato re ||

The pure stream constantly trickles forth, and my mind is intoxicated by this sublime essence.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਸਗਲੇ ਮਦ ਛੂਛੇ ਇਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਰੇ ॥੪॥੧॥

कहि कबीर सगले मद छूछे इहै महा रसु साचो रे ॥४॥१॥

Kahi kabeer sagale mad chhoochhe ihai mahaa rasu saacho re ||4||1||

Says Kabeer, all other wines are trivial and tasteless; this is the only true, sublime essence. ||4||1||


ਗੁੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਹੂਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਠੀ ਮਨ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

गुड़ु करि गिआनु धिआनु करि महूआ भउ भाठी मन धारा ॥

Gu(rr)u kari giaanu dhiaanu kari mahooaa bhau bhaathee man dhaaraa ||

Make spiritual wisdom the molasses, meditation the flowers, and the Fear of God the fire enshrined in your mind.

ਸੁਖਮਨ ਨਾਰੀ ਸਹਜ ਸਮਾਨੀ ਪੀਵੈ ਪੀਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

सुखमन नारी सहज समानी पीवै पीवनहारा ॥१॥

Sukhaman naaree sahaj samaanee peevai peevanahaaraa ||1||

The Shushmanaa, the central spinal channel, is intuitively balanced, and the drinker drinks in this wine. ||1||


ਅਉਧੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਵਾਰਾ ॥

अउधू मेरा मनु मतवारा ॥

Audhoo meraa manu matavaaraa ||

O hermit Yogi, my mind is intoxicated.

ਉਨਮਦ ਚਢਾ ਮਦਨ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਨ ਭਇਆ ਉਜਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

उनमद चढा मदन रसु चाखिआ त्रिभवन भइआ उजिआरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Unamad chadhaa madan rasu chaakhiaa tribhavan bhaiaa ujiaaraa ||1|| rahaau ||

When that wine rises up, one tastes the sublime essence of this juice, and sees across the three worlds. ||1|| Pause ||


ਦੁਇ ਪੁਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਰਸਾਈ ਭਾਠੀ ਪੀਉ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

दुइ पुर जोरि रसाई भाठी पीउ महा रसु भारी ॥

Dui pur jori rasaaee bhaathee peeu mahaa rasu bhaaree ||

Joining the two channels of the breath, I have lit the furnace, and I drink in the supreme, sublime essence.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਦੁਇ ਕੀਏ ਜਲੇਤਾ ਛੂਟਿ ਗਈ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

कामु क्रोधु दुइ कीए जलेता छूटि गई संसारी ॥२॥

Kaamu krodhu dui keee jaletaa chhooti gaee sanssaaree ||2||

I have burnt both sexual desire and anger, and I have been emancipated from the world. ||2||


ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਗੁਰ ਗੰਮਿਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

प्रगट प्रगास गिआन गुर गमित सतिगुर ते सुधि पाई ॥

Prgat prgaas giaan gur gammit satigur te sudhi paaee ||

The light of spiritual wisdom enlightens me; meeting with the Guru, the True Guru, I have obtained this understanding.

ਦਾਸੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ਉਚਕਿ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥੨॥

दासु कबीरु तासु मद माता उचकि न कबहू जाई ॥३॥२॥

Daasu kabeeru taasu mad maataa uchaki na kabahoo jaaee ||3||2||

Slave Kabeer is intoxicated with that wine, which never wears off. ||3||2||


ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੋ ਮੇਰੁ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਮੈ ਤੇਰੀ ॥

तूं मेरो मेरु परबतु सुआमी ओट गही मै तेरी ॥

Toonn mero meru parabatu suaamee ot gahee mai teree ||

You are my Sumayr Mountain, O my Lord and Master; I have grasped Your Support.

ਨਾ ਤੁਮ ਡੋਲਹੁ ਨਾ ਹਮ ਗਿਰਤੇ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਰੀ ॥੧॥

ना तुम डोलहु ना हम गिरते रखि लीनी हरि मेरी ॥१॥

Naa tum dolahu naa ham girate rakhi leenee hari meree ||1||

You do not shake, and I do not fall. You have preserved my honor. ||1||


ਅਬ ਤਬ ਜਬ ਕਬ ਤੁਹੀ ਤੁਹੀ ॥

अब तब जब कब तुही तुही ॥

Ab tab jab kab tuhee tuhee ||

Now and then, here and there, You, only You.

ਹਮ ਤੁਅ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਦ ਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हम तुअ परसादि सुखी सद ही ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ham tua parasaadi sukhee sad hee ||1|| rahaau ||

By Your Grace, I am forever in peace. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤੋਰੇ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਮਗਹਰ ਬਸਿਓ ਮੇਰੇ ਤਨ ਕੀ ਤਪਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

तोरे भरोसे मगहर बसिओ मेरे तन की तपति बुझाई ॥

Tore bharose magahar basio mere tan kee tapati bujhaaee ||

Relying upon You, I can live even in the cursed place of Magahar; You have put out the fire of my body.

ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਮਗਹਰ ਪਾਇਓ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਾਸੀ ਬਸੇ ਆਈ ॥੨॥

पहिले दरसनु मगहर पाइओ फुनि कासी बसे आई ॥२॥

Pahile darasanu magahar paaio phuni kaasee base aaee ||2||

First, I obtained the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan in Magahar; then, I came to dwell at Benares. ||2||


ਜੈਸਾ ਮਗਹਰੁ ਤੈਸੀ ਕਾਸੀ ਹਮ ਏਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੀ ॥

जैसा मगहरु तैसी कासी हम एकै करि जानी ॥

Jaisaa magaharu taisee kaasee ham ekai kari jaanee ||

As is Magahar, so is Benares; I see them as one and the same.

ਹਮ ਨਿਰਧਨ ਜਿਉ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਰਤੇ ਫੂਟਿ ਗੁਮਾਨੀ ॥੩॥

हम निरधन जिउ इहु धनु पाइआ मरते फूटि गुमानी ॥३॥

Ham niradhan jiu ihu dhanu paaiaa marate phooti gumaanee ||3||

I am poor, but I have obtained this wealth of the Lord; the proud are bursting with pride, and die. ||3||


ਕਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਚੁਭਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੂਲਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਢਨ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

करै गुमानु चुभहि तिसु सूला को काढन कउ नाही ॥

Karai gumaanu chubhahi tisu soolaa ko kaadhan kau naahee ||

One who takes pride in himself is stuck with thorns; no one can pull them out.

ਅਜੈ ਸੁ ਚੋਭ ਕਉ ਬਿਲਲ ਬਿਲਾਤੇ ਨਰਕੇ ਘੋਰ ਪਚਾਹੀ ॥੪॥

अजै सु चोभ कउ बिलल बिलाते नरके घोर पचाही ॥४॥

Ajai su chobh kau bilal bilaate narake ghor pachaahee ||4||

Here, he cries bitterly, and hereafter, he burns in the most hideous hell. ||4||


ਕਵਨੁ ਨਰਕੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਬਿਚਾਰਾ ਸੰਤਨ ਦੋਊ ਰਾਦੇ ॥

कवनु नरकु किआ सुरगु बिचारा संतन दोऊ रादे ॥

Kavanu naraku kiaa suragu bichaaraa santtan dou raade ||

What is hell, and what is heaven? The Saints reject them both.

ਹਮ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਕਢਤੇ ਅਪਨੇ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੇ ॥੫॥

हम काहू की काणि न कढते अपने गुर परसादे ॥५॥

Ham kaahoo kee kaa(nn)i na kadhate apane gur parasaade ||5||

I have no obligation to either of them, by the Grace of my Guru. ||5||


ਅਬ ਤਉ ਜਾਇ ਚਢੇ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੈ ਸਾਰਿੰਗਪਾਨੀ ॥

अब तउ जाइ चढे सिंघासनि मिले है सारिंगपानी ॥

Ab tau jaai chadhe singghaasani mile hai saaringgapaanee ||

Now, I have mounted to the throne of the Lord; I have met the Lord, the Sustainer of the World.

ਰਾਮ ਕਬੀਰਾ ਏਕ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥੬॥੩॥

राम कबीरा एक भए है कोइ न सकै पछानी ॥६॥३॥

Raam kabeeraa ek bhae hai koi na sakai pachhaanee ||6||3||

The Lord and Kabeer have become one. No one can tell them apart. ||6||3||


ਸੰਤਾ ਮਾਨਉ ਦੂਤਾ ਡਾਨਉ ਇਹ ਕੁਟਵਾਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ॥

संता मानउ दूता डानउ इह कुटवारी मेरी ॥

Santtaa maanau dootaa daanau ih kutavaaree meree ||

I honor and obey the Saints, and punish the wicked; this is my duty as God's police officer.

ਦਿਵਸ ਰੈਨਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਉ ਪਲੋਸਉ ਕੇਸ ਚਵਰ ਕਰਿ ਫੇਰੀ ॥੧॥

दिवस रैनि तेरे पाउ पलोसउ केस चवर करि फेरी ॥१॥

Divas raini tere paau palosau kes chavar kari pheree ||1||

Day and night, I wash Your feet, Lord; I wave my hair as the chauree, to brush away the flies. ||1||


ਹਮ ਕੂਕਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

हम कूकर तेरे दरबारि ॥

Ham kookar tere darabaari ||

I am a dog at Your Court, Lord.

ਭਉਕਹਿ ਆਗੈ ਬਦਨੁ ਪਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

भउकहि आगै बदनु पसारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Bhaukahi aagai badanu pasaari ||1|| rahaau ||

I open my snout and bark before it. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪੂਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਅਬ ਤਉ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

पूरब जनम हम तुम्हरे सेवक अब तउ मिटिआ न जाई ॥

Poorab janam ham tumhre sevak ab tau mitiaa na jaaee ||

In my past life, I was Your servant; now, I cannot leave You.

ਤੇਰੇ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਧੁਨਿ ਸਹਜ ਕੀ ਮਾਥੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਗਾਈ ॥੨॥

तेरे दुआरै धुनि सहज की माथै मेरे दगाई ॥२॥

Tere duaarai dhuni sahaj kee maathai mere dagaaee ||2||

The celestial sound current resounds at Your Door. Your insignia is stamped upon my forehead. ||2||


ਦਾਗੇ ਹੋਹਿ ਸੁ ਰਨ ਮਹਿ ਜੂਝਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਾਗੇ ਭਗਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

दागे होहि सु रन महि जूझहि बिनु दागे भगि जाई ॥

Daage hohi su ran mahi joojhahi binu daage bhagi jaaee ||

Those who are branded with Your brand fight bravely in battle; those without Your brand run away.

ਸਾਧੂ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਛਾਨੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਏ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥

साधू होइ सु भगति पछानै हरि लए खजानै पाई ॥३॥

Saadhoo hoi su bhagati pachhaanai hari lae khajaanai paaee ||3||

One who becomes a Holy person, appreciates the value of devotional worship to the Lord. The Lord places him in His treasury. ||3||


ਕੋਠਰੇ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਠਰੀ ਪਰਮ ਕੋਠੀ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

कोठरे महि कोठरी परम कोठी बीचारि ॥

Kothare mahi kotharee param kothee beechaari ||

In the fortress is the chamber; by contemplative meditation it becomes the supreme chamber.

ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਕਉ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਬਸਤੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

गुरि दीनी बसतु कबीर कउ लेवहु बसतु सम्हारि ॥४॥

Guri deenee basatu kabeer kau levahu basatu samhaari ||4||

The Guru has blessed Kabeer with the commodity, saying, ""Take this commodity; cherish it and keep it secure."" ||4||


ਕਬੀਰਿ ਦੀਈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕਉ ਲੀਨੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ॥

कबीरि दीई संसार कउ लीनी जिसु मसतकि भागु ॥

Kabeeri deeee sanssaar kau leenee jisu masataki bhaagu ||

Kabeer gives it to the world, but he alone receives it, upon whose forehead such destiny is recorded.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਥਿਰੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ॥੫॥੪॥

अम्रित रसु जिनि पाइआ थिरु ता का सोहागु ॥५॥४॥

Ammmrit rasu jini paaiaa thiru taa kaa sohaagu ||5||4||

Permanent is the marriage, of one who receives this ambrosial essence. ||5||4||


ਜਿਹ ਮੁਖ ਬੇਦੁ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਿਕਸੈ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨੁ ਬਿਸਰੁ ਕਰੈ ॥

जिह मुख बेदु गाइत्री निकसै सो किउ ब्रहमनु बिसरु करै ॥

Jih mukh bedu gaaitree nikasai so kiu brhamanu bisaru karai ||

O Brahmin, how can you forget the One, from whose mouth the Vedas and the Gayitri prayer issued forth?

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥੧॥

जा कै पाइ जगतु सभु लागै सो किउ पंडितु हरि न कहै ॥१॥

Jaa kai paai jagatu sabhu laagai so kiu pandditu hari na kahai ||1||

The whole world falls at His feet; why don't you chant the Name of that Lord, O Pandit? ||1||


ਕਾਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਨ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਕਹਹਿ ॥

काहे मेरे बाम्हन हरि न कहहि ॥

Kaahe mere baamhn hari na kahahi ||

Why, O my Brahmin, do you not chant the Lord's Name?

ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਪਾਡੇ ਦੋਜਕੁ ਭਰਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

रामु न बोलहि पाडे दोजकु भरहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raamu na bolahi paade dojaku bharahi ||1|| rahaau ||

If you don't chant the Lord's Name, O Pandit, you will only suffer in hell. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਪਨ ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਘਰਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਹਠੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਉਦਰੁ ਭਰਹਿ ॥

आपन ऊच नीच घरि भोजनु हठे करम करि उदरु भरहि ॥

Aapan uch neech ghari bhojanu hathe karam kari udaru bharahi ||

You think that you are high, but you take food from the houses of the lowly; you fill up your belly by forcibly practicing your rituals.

ਚਉਦਸ ਅਮਾਵਸ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿ ਮਾਂਗਹਿ ਕਰ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਲੈ ਕੂਪਿ ਪਰਹਿ ॥੨॥

चउदस अमावस रचि रचि मांगहि कर दीपकु लै कूपि परहि ॥२॥

Chaudas amaavas rachi rachi maangahi kar deepaku lai koopi parahi ||2||

On the fourteenth day, and the night of the new moon, you go out begging; even though you hold the lamp in your hands, still, you fall into the pit. ||2||


ਤੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਨੁ ਮੈ ਕਾਸੀਕ ਜੁਲਹਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਕੈਸੇ ਕੈ ਬਨਹਿ ॥

तूं ब्रहमनु मै कासीक जुलहा मुहि तोहि बराबरी कैसे कै बनहि ॥

Toonn brhamanu mai kaaseek julahaa muhi tohi baraabaree kaise kai banahi ||

You are a Brahmin, and I am only a weaver from Benares. How can I compare to you?

ਹਮਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕਹਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਭਰੋਸੇ ਪਾਂਡੇ ਡੂਬਿ ਮਰਹਿ ॥੩॥੫॥

हमरे राम नाम कहि उबरे बेद भरोसे पांडे डूबि मरहि ॥३॥५॥

Hamare raam naam kahi ubare bed bharose paande doobi marahi ||3||5||

Chanting the Lord's Name, I have been saved; relying on the Vedas, O Brahmin, you shall drown and die. ||3||5||


ਤਰਵਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਅਨੰਤ ਡਾਰ ਸਾਖਾ ਪੁਹਪ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਰਸ ਭਰੀਆ ॥

तरवरु एकु अनंत डार साखा पुहप पत्र रस भरीआ ॥

Taravaru eku anantt daar saakhaa puhap patr ras bhareeaa ||

There is a single tree, with countless branches and twigs; its flowers and leaves are filled with its juice.

ਇਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੀ ਬਾੜੀ ਹੈ ਰੇ ਤਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰੀਆ ॥੧॥

इह अम्रित की बाड़ी है रे तिनि हरि पूरै करीआ ॥१॥

Ih ammmrit kee baa(rr)ee hai re tini hari poorai kareeaa ||1||

This world is a garden of Ambrosial Nectar. The Perfect Lord created it. ||1||


ਜਾਨੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਰੇ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਕਹਾਨੀ ॥

जानी जानी रे राजा राम की कहानी ॥

Jaanee jaanee re raajaa raam kee kahaanee ||

I have come to know the story of my Sovereign Lord.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਿਰਲੈ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंतरि जोति राम परगासा गुरमुखि बिरलै जानी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anttari joti raam paragaasaa guramukhi biralai jaanee ||1|| rahaau ||

How rare is that Gurmukh who knows, and whose inner being is illumined by the Lord's Light. ||1|| Pause ||


ਭਵਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਪੁਹਪ ਰਸ ਬੀਧਾ ਬਾਰਹ ਲੇ ਉਰ ਧਰਿਆ ॥

भवरु एकु पुहप रस बीधा बारह ले उर धरिआ ॥

Bhavaru eku puhap ras beedhaa baarah le ur dhariaa ||

The bumble bee, addicted to the nectar of the twelve-petalled flowers, enshrines it in the heart.

ਸੋਰਹ ਮਧੇ ਪਵਨੁ ਝਕੋਰਿਆ ਆਕਾਸੇ ਫਰੁ ਫਰਿਆ ॥੨॥

सोरह मधे पवनु झकोरिआ आकासे फरु फरिआ ॥२॥

Sorah madhe pavanu jhakoriaa aakaase pharu phariaa ||2||

He holds his breath suspended in the sixteen-petalled sky of the Akaashic Ethers, and beats his wings in ecstasy. ||2||


ਸਹਜ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਬਿਰਵਾ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਧਰਤੀ ਜਲਹਰੁ ਸੋਖਿਆ ॥

सहज सुंनि इकु बिरवा उपजिआ धरती जलहरु सोखिआ ॥

Sahaj sunni iku biravaa upajiaa dharatee jalaharu sokhiaa ||

In the profound void of intuitive Samaadhi, the one tree rises up; it soaks up the water of desire from the ground.

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਉ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਬਿਰਵਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ॥੩॥੬॥

कहि कबीर हउ ता का सेवकु जिनि इहु बिरवा देखिआ ॥३॥६॥

Kahi kabeer hau taa kaa sevaku jini ihu biravaa dekhiaa ||3||6||

Says Kabeer, I am the servant of those who have seen this celestial tree. ||3||6||


ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਮੋਨਿ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਝੋਲੀ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਕਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਰੇ ॥

मुंद्रा मोनि दइआ करि झोली पत्र का करहु बीचारु रे ॥

Munddraa moni daiaa kari jholee patr kaa karahu beechaaru re ||

Make silence your ear-rings, and compassion your wallet; let meditation be your begging bowl.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਅਉ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਉ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਰੇ ॥੧॥

खिंथा इहु तनु सीअउ अपना नामु करउ आधारु रे ॥१॥

Khintthaa ihu tanu seeau apanaa naamu karau aadhaaru re ||1||

Sew this body as your patched coat, and take the Lord's Name as your support. ||1||
