ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ ॥

आदि सचु जुगादि सचु ॥

Aadi sachu jugaadi sachu ||

True In The Primal Beginning. True Throughout The Ages.

ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥

है भी सचु नानक होसी भी सचु ॥१॥

Hai bhee sachu naanak hosee bhee sachu ||1||

True Here And Now. O Nanak, Forever And Ever True. ||1||


ਸੋਚੈ ਸੋਚਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ ॥

सोचै सोचि न होवई जे सोची लख वार ॥

Sochai sochi na hovaee je sochee lakh vaar ||

By thinking, He cannot be reduced to thought, even by thinking hundreds of thousands of times.

ਚੁਪੈ ਚੁਪ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਲਾਇ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ ॥

चुपै चुप न होवई जे लाइ रहा लिव तार ॥

Chupai chup na hovaee je laai rahaa liv taar ||

By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੀ ਜੇ ਬੰਨਾ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਭਾਰ ॥

भुखिआ भुख न उतरी जे बंना पुरीआ भार ॥

Bhukhiaa bhukh na utaree je bannaa pureeaa bhaar ||

The hunger of the hungry is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly goods.

ਸਹਸ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਤ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

सहस सिआणपा लख होहि त इक न चलै नालि ॥

Sahas siaa(nn)apaa lakh hohi ta ik na chalai naali ||

Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in the end.

ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ ॥

किव सचिआरा होईऐ किव कूड़ै तुटै पालि ॥

Kiv sachiaaraa hoeeai kiv koo(rr)ai tutai paali ||

So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away?

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

हुकमि रजाई चलणा नानक लिखिआ नालि ॥१॥

Hukami rajaaee chala(nn)aa naanak likhiaa naali ||1||

O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will. ||1||


ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਆਕਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥

हुकमी होवनि आकार हुकमु न कहिआ जाई ॥

Hukamee hovani aakaar hukamu na kahiaa jaaee ||

By His Command, bodies are created; His Command cannot be described.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਜੀਅ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

हुकमी होवनि जीअ हुकमि मिलै वडिआई ॥

Hukamee hovani jeea hukami milai vadiaaee ||

By His Command, souls come into being; by His Command, glory and greatness are obtained.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ॥

हुकमी उतमु नीचु हुकमि लिखि दुख सुख पाईअहि ॥

Hukamee utamu neechu hukami likhi dukh sukh paaeeahi ||

By His Command, some are high and some are low; by His Written Command, pain and pleasure are obtained.

ਇਕਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਇਕਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਦਾ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ॥

इकना हुकमी बखसीस इकि हुकमी सदा भवाईअहि ॥

Ikanaa hukamee bakhasees iki hukamee sadaa bhavaaeeahi ||

Some, by His Command, are blessed and forgiven; others, by His Command, wander aimlessly forever.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

हुकमै अंदरि सभु को बाहरि हुकम न कोइ ॥

Hukamai anddari sabhu ko baahari hukam na koi ||

Everyone is subject to His Command; no one is beyond His Command.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਜੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਤ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक हुकमै जे बुझै त हउमै कहै न कोइ ॥२॥

Naanak hukamai je bujhai ta haumai kahai na koi ||2||

O Nanak, one who understands His Command, does not speak in ego. ||2||


ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਤਾਣੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਤਾਣੁ ॥

गावै को ताणु होवै किसै ताणु ॥

Gaavai ko taa(nn)u hovai kisai taa(nn)u ||

Some sing of His Power-who has that Power?

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਦਾਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

गावै को दाति जाणै नीसाणु ॥

Gaavai ko daati jaa(nn)ai neesaa(nn)u ||

Some sing of His Gifts, and know His Sign and Insignia.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਗੁਣ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਚਾਰ ॥

गावै को गुण वडिआईआ चार ॥

Gaavai ko gu(nn) vadiaaeeaa chaar ||

Some sing of His Glorious Virtues, Greatness and Beauty.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵਿਖਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

गावै को विदिआ विखमु वीचारु ॥

Gaavai ko vidiaa vikhamu veechaaru ||

Some sing of knowledge obtained of Him, through difficult philosophical studies.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਨੁ ਖੇਹ ॥

गावै को साजि करे तनु खेह ॥

Gaavai ko saaji kare tanu kheh ||

Some sing that He fashions the body, and then again reduces it to dust.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਜੀਅ ਲੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ ॥

गावै को जीअ लै फिरि देह ॥

Gaavai ko jeea lai phiri deh ||

Some sing that He takes life away, and then again restores it.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਜਾਪੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

गावै को जापै दिसै दूरि ॥

Gaavai ko jaapai disai doori ||

Some sing that He seems so very far away.

ਗਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਹਾਦਰਾ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥

गावै को वेखै हादरा हदूरि ॥

Gaavai ko vekhai haadaraa hadoori ||

Some sing that He watches over us, face to face, ever-present.

ਕਥਨਾ ਕਥੀ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੋਟਿ ॥

कथना कथी न आवै तोटि ॥

Kathanaa kathee na aavai toti ||

There is no shortage of those who preach and teach.

ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਕਥੀ ਕੋਟੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ॥

कथि कथि कथी कोटी कोटि कोटि ॥

Kathi kathi kathee kotee koti koti ||

Millions upon millions offer millions of sermons and stories.

ਦੇਦਾ ਦੇ ਲੈਦੇ ਥਕਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

देदा दे लैदे थकि पाहि ॥

Dedaa de laide thaki paahi ||

The Great Giver keeps on giving, while those who receive grow weary of receiving.

ਜੁਗਾ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

जुगा जुगंतरि खाही खाहि ॥

Jugaa juganttari khaahee khaahi ||

Throughout the ages, consumers consume.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

हुकमी हुकमु चलाए राहु ॥

Hukamee hukamu chalaae raahu ||

The Commander, by His Command, leads us to walk on the Path.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ॥੩॥

नानक विगसै वेपरवाहु ॥३॥

Naanak vigasai veparavaahu ||3||

O Nanak, He blossoms forth, Carefree and Untroubled. ||3||


ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਇ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਭਾਉ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

साचा साहिबु साचु नाइ भाखिआ भाउ अपारु ॥

Saachaa saahibu saachu naai bhaakhiaa bhaau apaaru ||

True is the Master, True is His Name-speak it with infinite love.

ਆਖਹਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥

आखहि मंगहि देहि देहि दाति करे दातारु ॥

Aakhahi manggahi dehi dehi daati kare daataaru ||

People beg and pray, ""Give to us, give to us"", and the Great Giver gives His Gifts.

ਫੇਰਿ ਕਿ ਅਗੈ ਰਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥

फेरि कि अगै रखीऐ जितु दिसै दरबारु ॥

Pheri ki agai rakheeai jitu disai darabaaru ||

So what offering can we place before Him, by which we might see the Darbaar of His Court?

ਮੁਹੌ ਕਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

मुहौ कि बोलणु बोलीऐ जितु सुणि धरे पिआरु ॥

Muhau ki bola(nn)u boleeai jitu su(nn)i dhare piaaru ||

What words can we speak to evoke His Love?

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

अम्रित वेला सचु नाउ वडिआई वीचारु ॥

Ammmrit velaa sachu naau vadiaaee veechaaru ||

In the Amrit Vaylaa, the ambrosial hours before dawn, chant the True Name, and contemplate His Glorious Greatness.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਵੈ ਕਪੜਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

करमी आवै कपड़ा नदरी मोखु दुआरु ॥

Karamee aavai kapa(rr)aa nadaree mokhu duaaru ||

By the karma of past actions, the robe of this physical body is obtained. By His Grace, the Gate of Liberation is found.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੪॥

नानक एवै जाणीऐ सभु आपे सचिआरु ॥४॥

Naanak evai jaa(nn)eeai sabhu aape sachiaaru ||4||

O Nanak, know this well: the True One Himself is All. ||4||


ਥਾਪਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਕੀਤਾ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

थापिआ न जाइ कीता न होइ ॥

Thaapiaa na jaai keetaa na hoi ||

He cannot be established, He cannot be created.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

आपे आपि निरंजनु सोइ ॥

Aape aapi niranjjanu soi ||

He Himself is Immaculate and Pure.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

जिनि सेविआ तिनि पाइआ मानु ॥

Jini seviaa tini paaiaa maanu ||

Those who serve Him are honored.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਵੀਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥

नानक गावीऐ गुणी निधानु ॥

Naanak gaaveeai gu(nn)ee nidhaanu ||

O Nanak, sing of the Lord, the Treasure of Excellence.

ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ ॥

गावीऐ सुणीऐ मनि रखीऐ भाउ ॥

Gaaveeai su(nn)eeai mani rakheeai bhaau ||

Sing, and listen, and let your mind be filled with love.

ਦੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

दुखु परहरि सुखु घरि लै जाइ ॥

Dukhu parahari sukhu ghari lai jaai ||

Your pain shall be sent far away, and peace shall come to your home.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

गुरमुखि नादं गुरमुखि वेदं गुरमुखि रहिआ समाई ॥

Guramukhi naadann guramukhi vedann guramukhi rahiaa samaaee ||

The Guru's Word is the Sound-current of the Naad; the Guru's Word is the Wisdom of the Vedas; the Guru's Word is all-pervading.

ਗੁਰੁ ਈਸਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬਤੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

गुरु ईसरु गुरु गोरखु बरमा गुरु पारबती माई ॥

Guru eesaru guru gorakhu baramaa guru paarabatee maaee ||

The Guru is Shiva, the Guru is Vishnu and Brahma; the Guru is Paarvati and Lakhshmi.

ਜੇ ਹਉ ਜਾਣਾ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

जे हउ जाणा आखा नाही कहणा कथनु न जाई ॥

Je hau jaa(nn)aa aakhaa naahee kaha(nn)aa kathanu na jaaee ||

Even knowing God, I cannot describe Him; He cannot be described in words.

ਗੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

गुरा इक देहि बुझाई ॥

Guraa ik dehi bujhaaee ||

The Guru has given me this one understanding:

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥

सभना जीआ का इकु दाता सो मै विसरि न जाई ॥५॥

Sabhanaa jeeaa kaa iku daataa so mai visari na jaaee ||5||

There is only the One, the Giver of all souls. May I never forget Him! ||5||


ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਕਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਰੀ ॥

तीरथि नावा जे तिसु भावा विणु भाणे कि नाइ करी ॥

Teerathi naavaa je tisu bhaavaa vi(nn)u bhaa(nn)e ki naai karee ||

If I am pleasing to Him, then that is my pilgrimage and cleansing bath. Without pleasing Him, what good are ritual cleansings?

ਜੇਤੀ ਸਿਰਠਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਵੇਖਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਲਈ ॥

जेती सिरठि उपाई वेखा विणु करमा कि मिलै लई ॥

Jetee sirathi upaaee vekhaa vi(nn)u karamaa ki milai laee ||

I gaze upon all the created beings: without the karma of good actions, what are they given to receive?

ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਜੇ ਇਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣੀ ॥

मति विचि रतन जवाहर माणिक जे इक गुर की सिख सुणी ॥

Mati vichi ratan javaahar maa(nn)ik je ik gur kee sikh su(nn)ee ||

Within the mind are gems, jewels and rubies, if you listen to the Guru's Teachings, even once.

ਗੁਰਾ ਇਕ ਦੇਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

गुरा इक देहि बुझाई ॥

Guraa ik dehi bujhaaee ||

The Guru has given me this one understanding:

ਸਭਨਾ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੬॥

सभना जीआ का इकु दाता सो मै विसरि न जाई ॥६॥

Sabhanaa jeeaa kaa iku daataa so mai visari na jaaee ||6||

There is only the One, the Giver of all souls. May I never forget Him! ||6||


ਜੇ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਆਰਜਾ ਹੋਰ ਦਸੂਣੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

जे जुग चारे आरजा होर दसूणी होइ ॥

Je jug chaare aarajaa hor dasoo(nn)ee hoi ||

Even if you could live throughout the four ages, or even ten times more,

ਨਵਾ ਖੰਡਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

नवा खंडा विचि जाणीऐ नालि चलै सभु कोइ ॥

Navaa khanddaa vichi jaa(nn)eeai naali chalai sabhu koi ||

And even if you were known throughout the nine continents and followed by all,

ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਉ ਰਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਲੇਇ ॥

चंगा नाउ रखाइ कै जसु कीरति जगि लेइ ॥

Changgaa naau rakhaai kai jasu keerati jagi lei ||

With a good name and reputation, with praise and fame throughout the world-

ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤ ਵਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੇ ॥

जे तिसु नदरि न आवई त वात न पुछै के ॥

Je tisu nadari na aavaee ta vaat na puchhai ke ||

Still, if the Lord does not bless you with His Glance of Grace, then who cares? What is the use?

ਕੀਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀਟੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੋਸੀ ਦੋਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥

कीटा अंदरि कीटु करि दोसी दोसु धरे ॥

Keetaa anddari keetu kari dosee dosu dhare ||

Among worms, you would be considered a lowly worm, and even contemptible sinners would hold you in contempt.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਿਆ ਗੁਣੁ ਦੇ ॥

नानक निरगुणि गुणु करे गुणवंतिआ गुणु दे ॥

Naanak niragu(nn)i gu(nn)u kare gu(nn)avanttiaa gu(nn)u de ||

O Nanak, God blesses the unworthy with virtue, and bestows virtue on the virtuous.

ਤੇਹਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਜਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇ ॥੭॥

तेहा कोइ न सुझई जि तिसु गुणु कोइ करे ॥७॥

Tehaa koi na sujhaee ji tisu gu(nn)u koi kare ||7||

No one can even imagine anyone who can bestow virtue upon Him. ||7||


ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਿਧ ਪੀਰ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥ ॥

सुणिऐ सिध पीर सुरि नाथ ॥

Su(nn)iai sidh peer suri naath ||

Listening-the Siddhas, the spiritual teachers, the heroic warriors, the yogic masters.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਧਰਤਿ ਧਵਲ ਆਕਾਸ ॥

सुणिऐ धरति धवल आकास ॥

Su(nn)iai dharati dhaval aakaas ||

Listening-the earth, its support and the Akaashic ethers.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੀਪ ਲੋਅ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥

सुणिऐ दीप लोअ पाताल ॥

Su(nn)iai deep loa paataal ||

Listening-the oceans, the lands of the world and the nether regions of the underworld.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

सुणिऐ पोहि न सकै कालु ॥

Su(nn)iai pohi na sakai kaalu ||

Listening-Death cannot even touch you.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ॥

नानक भगता सदा विगासु ॥

Naanak bhagataa sadaa vigaasu ||

O Nanak, the devotees are forever in bliss.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੮॥

सुणिऐ दूख पाप का नासु ॥८॥

Su(nn)iai dookh paap kaa naasu ||8||

Listening-pain and sin are erased. ||8||


ਸੁਣਿਐ ਈਸਰੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਇੰਦੁ ॥

सुणिऐ ईसरु बरमा इंदु ॥

Su(nn)iai eesaru baramaa ianddu ||

Listening-Shiva, Brahma and Indra.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣ ਮੰਦੁ ॥

सुणिऐ मुखि सालाहण मंदु ॥

Su(nn)iai mukhi saalaaha(nn) manddu ||

Listening-even foul-mouthed people praise Him.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੇਦ ॥

सुणिऐ जोग जुगति तनि भेद ॥

नानक भगता सदा विगासु ॥

O Nanak, the devotees are forever in bliss.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਦੂਖ ਪਾਪ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ ॥੯॥

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

सुणिऐ सतु संतोखु गिआनु ॥

Su(nn)iai satu santtokhu giaanu ||

Listening-truth, contentment and spiritual wisdom.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਕਾ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥

सुणिऐ अठसठि का इसनानु ॥

Su(nn)iai athasathi kaa isanaanu ||

Listening-take your cleansing bath at the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

सुणिऐ पड़ि पड़ि पावहि मानु ॥

Su(nn)iai pa(rr)i pa(rr)i paavahi maanu ||

Listening-reading and reciting, honor is obtained.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

सुणिऐ लागै सहजि धिआनु ॥

Su(nn)iai laagai sahaji dhiaanu ||

Listening-intuitively grasp the essence of meditation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ॥

नानक भगता सदा विगासु ॥

Naanak bhagataa sadaa vigaasu ||

O Nanak, the devotees are forever in bliss.

Su(nn)iai saraa gu(nn)aa ke gaah ||

Listening-dive deep into the ocean of virtue.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸੇਖ ਪੀਰ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ॥

सुणिऐ सेख पीर पातिसाह ॥

Su(nn)iai sekh peer paatisaah ||

Listening-the Shaykhs, religious scholars, spiritual teachers and emperors.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਅੰਧੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

सुणिऐ अंधे पावहि राहु ॥

Su(nn)iai anddhe paavahi raahu ||

Listening-even the blind find the Path.

ਸੁਣਿਐ ਹਾਥ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ॥

सुणिऐ हाथ होवै असगाहु ॥

Su(nn)iai haath hovai asagaahu ||

Listening-the Unreachable comes within your grasp.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ॥

नानक भगता सदा विगासु ॥

ਮੰਨੇ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

मंने की गति कही न जाइ ॥

Manne kee gati kahee na jaai ||

The state of the faithful cannot be described.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥

जे को कहै पिछै पछुताइ ॥

Je ko kahai pichhai pachhutaai ||

One who tries to describe this shall regret the attempt.

ਕਾਗਦਿ ਕਲਮ ਨ ਲਿਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

कागदि कलम न लिखणहारु ॥

Kaagadi kalam na likha(nn)ahaaru ||

No paper, no pen, no scribe

ਮੰਨੇ ਕਾ ਬਹਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

मंने का बहि करनि वीचारु ॥

Manne kaa bahi karani veechaaru ||

Can record the state of the faithful.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ऐसा नामु निरंजनु होइ ॥

Aisaa naamu niranjjanu hoi ||

Such is the Name of the Immaculate Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੨॥

जे को मंनि जाणै मनि कोइ ॥१२॥

Je ko manni jaa(nn)ai mani koi ||12||

Only one who has faith comes to know such a state of mind. ||12||


ਮੰਨੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ ॥

मंनै सुरति होवै मनि बुधि ॥

Mannai surati hovai mani budhi ||

The faithful have intuitive awareness and intelligence.

ਮੰਨੈ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ॥

मंनै सगल भवण की सुधि ॥

Mannai sagal bhava(nn) kee sudhi ||

The faithful know about all worlds and realms.

ਮੰਨੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਨਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

मंनै मुहि चोटा ना खाइ ॥

Mannai muhi chotaa naa khaai ||

The faithful shall never be struck across the face.

ਮੰਨੈ ਜਮ ਕੈ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

मंनै जम कै साथि न जाइ ॥

Mannai jam kai saathi na jaai ||

The faithful do not have to go with the Messenger of Death.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ऐसा नामु निरंजनु होइ ॥

Aisaa naamu niranjjanu hoi ||

Such is the Name of the Immaculate Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੩॥

जे को मंनि जाणै मनि कोइ ॥१३॥

Je ko manni jaa(nn)ai mani koi ||13||

Only one who has faith comes to know such a state of mind. ||13||


ਮੰਨੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

मंनै मारगि ठाक न पाइ ॥

Mannai maaragi thaak na paai ||

The path of the faithful shall never be blocked.

ਮੰਨੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

मंनै पति सिउ परगटु जाइ ॥

Mannai pati siu paragatu jaai ||

The faithful shall depart with honor and fame.

ਮੰਨੈ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਪੰਥੁ ॥

मंनै मगु न चलै पंथु ॥

Mannai magu na chalai pantthu ||

The faithful do not follow empty religious rituals.

ਮੰਨੈ ਧਰਮ ਸੇਤੀ ਸਨਬੰਧੁ ॥

मंनै धरम सेती सनबंधु ॥

Mannai dharam setee sanabanddhu ||

The faithful are firmly bound to the Dharma.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ऐसा नामु निरंजनु होइ ॥

Aisaa naamu niranjjanu hoi ||

Such is the Name of the Immaculate Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੪॥

जे को मंनि जाणै मनि कोइ ॥१४॥

Je ko manni jaa(nn)ai mani koi ||14||

Only one who has faith comes to know such a state of mind. ||14||


ਮੰਨੈ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

मंनै पावहि मोखु दुआरु ॥

Mannai paavahi mokhu duaaru ||

The faithful find the Door of Liberation.

ਮੰਨੈ ਪਰਵਾਰੈ ਸਾਧਾਰੁ ॥

मंनै परवारै साधारु ॥

Mannai paravaarai saadhaaru ||

The faithful uplift and redeem their family and relations.

ਮੰਨੈ ਤਰੈ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ॥

मंनै तरै तारे गुरु सिख ॥

Mannai tarai taare guru sikh ||

The faithful are saved, and carried across with the Sikhs of the Guru.

ਮੰਨੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਵਹਿ ਨ ਭਿਖ ॥

मंनै नानक भवहि न भिख ॥

Mannai naanak bhavahi na bhikh ||

The faithful, O Nanak, do not wander around begging.

ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ऐसा नामु निरंजनु होइ ॥

Aisaa naamu niranjjanu hoi ||

Such is the Name of the Immaculate Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥੧੫॥

Only one who has faith comes to know such a state of mind. ||15||


ਪੰਚ ਪਰਵਾਣ ਪੰਚ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥

पंच परवाण पंच परधानु ॥

Pancch paravaa(nn) pancch paradhaanu ||

The chosen ones, the self-elect, are accepted and approved.

ਪੰਚੇ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

पंचे पावहि दरगहि मानु ॥

Pancche paavahi daragahi maanu ||

The chosen ones are honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਪੰਚੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਦਰਿ ਰਾਜਾਨੁ ॥

पंचे सोहहि दरि राजानु ॥

Pancche sohahi dari raajaanu ||

The chosen ones look beautiful in the courts of kings.

ਪੰਚਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

पंचा का गुरु एकु धिआनु ॥

Pancchaa kaa guru eku dhiaanu ||

The chosen ones meditate single-mindedly on the Guru.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

जे को कहै करै वीचारु ॥

Je ko kahai karai veechaaru ||

No matter how much anyone tries to explain and describe them,

ਕਰਤੇ ਕੈ ਕਰਣੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥

करते कै करणै नाही सुमारु ॥

Karate kai kara(nn)ai naahee sumaaru ||

The actions of the Creator cannot be counted.

ਧੌਲੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਾ ਪੂਤੁ ॥

धौलु धरमु दइआ का पूतु ॥

Dhaulu dharamu daiaa kaa pootu ||

The mythical bull is Dharma, the son of compassion;

ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਥਾਪਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਸੂਤਿ ॥

संतोखु थापि रखिआ जिनि सूति ॥

Santtokhu thaapi rakhiaa jini sooti ||

This is what patiently holds the earth in its place.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥

जे को बुझै होवै सचिआरु ॥

Je ko bujhai hovai sachiaaru ||

One who understands this becomes truthful.

ਧਵਲੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

धवलै उपरि केता भारु ॥

Dhavalai upari ketaa bhaaru ||

What a great load there is on the bull!

ਧਰਤੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਪਰੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਹੋਰੁ ॥

धरती होरु परै होरु होरु ॥

Dharatee horu parai horu horu ||

So many worlds beyond this world-so very many!

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਭਾਰੁ ਤਲੈ ਕਵਣੁ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

तिस ते भारु तलै कवणु जोरु ॥

Tis te bhaaru talai kava(nn)u joru ||

What power holds them, and supports their weight?

ਜੀਅ ਜਾਤਿ ਰੰਗਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਵ ॥

जीअ जाति रंगा के नाव ॥

Jeea jaati ranggaa ke naav ||

The names and the colors of the assorted species of beings

ਸਭਨਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਵੁੜੀ ਕਲਾਮ ॥

सभना लिखिआ वुड़ी कलाम ॥

Sabhanaa likhiaa vu(rr)ee kalaam ||

Were all inscribed by the Ever-flowing Pen of God.

ਏਹੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

एहु लेखा लिखि जाणै कोइ ॥

Ehu lekhaa likhi jaa(nn)ai koi ||

Who knows how to write this account?

ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕੇਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

लेखा लिखिआ केता होइ ॥

Lekhaa likhiaa ketaa hoi ||

Just imagine what a huge scroll it would take!

ਕੇਤਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਸੁਆਲਿਹੁ ਰੂਪੁ ॥

केता ताणु सुआलिहु रूपु ॥

Ketaa taa(nn)u suaalihu roopu ||

What power! What fascinating beauty!

ਕੇਤੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੌਣੁ ਕੂਤੁ ॥

केती दाति जाणै कौणु कूतु ॥

Ketee daati jaa(nn)ai kau(nn)u kootu ||

And what gifts! Who can know their extent?

ਕੀਤਾ ਪਸਾਉ ਏਕੋ ਕਵਾਉ ॥

कीता पसाउ एको कवाउ ॥

Keetaa pasaau eko kavaau ||

You created the vast expanse of the Universe with One Word!

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥

तिस ते होए लख दरीआउ ॥

Tis te hoe lakh dareeaau ||

Hundreds of thousands of rivers began to flow.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कुदरति कवण कहा वीचारु ॥

Kudarati kava(nn) kahaa veechaaru ||

How can Your Creative Potency be described?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥

वारिआ न जावा एक वार ॥

Vaariaa na jaavaa ek vaar ||

I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

जो तुधु भावै साई भली कार ॥

Jo tudhu bhaavai saaee bhalee kaar ||

Whatever pleases You is the only good done,

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੬॥

तू सदा सलामति निरंकार ॥१६॥

Too sadaa salaamati nirankkaar ||16||

You, Eternal and Formless One! ||16||


ਅਸੰਖ ਜਪ ਅਸੰਖ ਭਾਉ ॥

असंख जप असंख भाउ ॥

Asankkh jap asankkh bhaau ||

Countless meditations, countless loves.

ਅਸੰਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਸੰਖ ਤਪ ਤਾਉ ॥

असंख पूजा असंख तप ताउ ॥

Asankkh poojaa asankkh tap taau ||

Countless worship services, countless austere disciplines.

ਅਸੰਖ ਗਰੰਥ ਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਦ ਪਾਠ ॥

असंख गरंथ मुखि वेद पाठ ॥

Asankkh garantth mukhi ved paath ||

Countless scriptures, and ritual recitations of the Vedas.

ਅਸੰਖ ਜੋਗ ਮਨਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਉਦਾਸ ॥

असंख जोग मनि रहहि उदास ॥

Asankkh jog mani rahahi udaas ||

Countless Yogis, whose minds remain detached from the world.

ਅਸੰਖ ਭਗਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

असंख भगत गुण गिआन वीचार ॥

Asankkh bhagat gu(nn) giaan veechaar ||

Countless devotees contemplate the Wisdom and Virtues of the Lord.

ਅਸੰਖ ਸਤੀ ਅਸੰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥

असंख सती असंख दातार ॥

Asankkh satee asankkh daataar ||

Countless the holy, countless the givers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਸੂਰ ਮੁਹ ਭਖ ਸਾਰ ॥

असंख सूर मुह भख सार ॥

Asankkh soor muh bhakh saar ||

Countless heroic spiritual warriors, who bear the brunt of the attack in battle (who with their mouths eat steel).

ਅਸੰਖ ਮੋਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰ ॥

असंख मोनि लिव लाइ तार ॥

Asankkh moni liv laai taar ||

Countless silent sages, vibrating the String of His Love.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कुदरति कवण कहा वीचारु ॥

Kudarati kava(nn) kahaa veechaaru ||

Countless fools, blinded by ignorance.

ਅਸੰਖ ਚੋਰ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰ ॥

असंख चोर हरामखोर ॥

Asankkh chor haraamakhor ||

Countless thieves and embezzlers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਅਮਰ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜੋਰ ॥

असंख अमर करि जाहि जोर ॥

Asankkh amar kari jaahi jor ||

Countless impose their will by force.

ਅਸੰਖ ਗਲਵਢ ਹਤਿਆ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

असंख गलवढ हतिआ कमाहि ॥

Asankkh galavadh hatiaa kamaahi ||

Countless cut-throats and ruthless killers.

ਅਸੰਖ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

असंख पापी पापु करि जाहि ॥

Asankkh paapee paapu kari jaahi ||

Countless sinners who keep on sinning.

ਅਸੰਖ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਕੂੜੇ ਫਿਰਾਹਿ ॥

असंख कूड़िआर कूड़े फिराहि ॥

Asankkh koo(rr)iaar koo(rr)e phiraahi ||

Countless liars, wandering lost in their lies.

ਅਸੰਖ ਮਲੇਛ ਮਲੁ ਭਖਿ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

असंख मलेछ मलु भखि खाहि ॥

Asankkh malechh malu bhakhi khaahi ||

Countless wretches, eating filth as their ration.

ਅਸੰਖ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

असंख निंदक सिरि करहि भारु ॥

Asankkh ninddak siri karahi bhaaru ||

Countless slanderers, carrying the weight of their stupid mistakes on their heads.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

नानकु नीचु कहै वीचारु ॥

Naanaku neechu kahai veechaaru ||

Nanak describes the state of the lowly.

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥

वारिआ न जावा एक वार ॥

Vaariaa na jaavaa ek vaar ||

I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

Countless names, countless places.

ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਸੰਖ ਲੋਅ ॥

अगम अगम असंख लोअ ॥

Agamm agamm asankkh loa ||

Inaccessible, unapproachable, countless celestial realms.

ਅਸੰਖ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

असंख कहहि सिरि भारु होइ ॥

Asankkh kahahi siri bhaaru hoi ||

Even to call them countless is to carry the weight on your head.

ਅਖਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਖਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

अखरी नामु अखरी सालाह ॥

Akharee naamu akharee saalaah ||

From the Word, comes the Naam; from the Word, comes Your Praise.

ਅਖਰੀ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੀਤ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹ ॥

अखरी गिआनु गीत गुण गाह ॥

Akharee giaanu geet gu(nn) gaah ||

From the Word, comes spiritual wisdom, singing the Songs of Your Glory.

ਅਖਰੀ ਲਿਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬਾਣਿ ॥

अखरी लिखणु बोलणु बाणि ॥

Akharee likha(nn)u bola(nn)u baa(nn)i ||

From the Word, come the written and spoken words and hymns.

ਅਖਰਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ ॥

अखरा सिरि संजोगु वखाणि ॥

Akharaa siri sanjjogu vakhaa(nn)i ||

From the Word, comes destiny, written on one's forehead.

ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

जिनि एहि लिखे तिसु सिरि नाहि ॥

Jini ehi likhe tisu siri naahi ||

But the One who wrote these Words of Destiny-no words are written on His Forehead.

ਜਿਵ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ ਤਿਵ ਤਿਵ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

जिव फुरमाए तिव तिव पाहि ॥

Jiv phuramaae tiv tiv paahi ||

As He ordains, so do we receive.

ਜੇਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇਤਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

जेता कीता तेता नाउ ॥

Jetaa keetaa tetaa naau ||

The created universe is the manifestation of Your Name.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਥਾਉ ॥

विणु नावै नाही को थाउ ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai naahee ko thaau ||

Without Your Name, there is no place at all.

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਵਣ ਕਹਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कुदरति कवण कहा वीचारु ॥

Kudarati kava(nn) kahaa veechaaru ||

How can I describe Your Creative Power?

ਵਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਵਾ ਏਕ ਵਾਰ ॥

वारिआ न जावा एक वार ॥

Vaariaa na jaavaa ek vaar ||

I cannot even once be a sacrifice to You.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

जो तुधु भावै साई भली कार ॥

Jo tudhu bhaavai saaee bhalee kaar ||

Whatever pleases You is the only good done,

ਤੂ ਸਦਾ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥੧੯॥

तू सदा सलामति निरंकार ॥१९॥

Too sadaa salaamati nirankkaar ||19||

You, Eternal and Formless One. ||19||


ਭਰੀਐ ਹਥੁ ਪੈਰੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਹ ॥

भरीऐ हथु पैरु तनु देह ॥

Bhareeai hathu pairu tanu deh ||

When the hands and the feet and the body are dirty,

ਪਾਣੀ ਧੋਤੈ ਉਤਰਸੁ ਖੇਹ ॥

पाणी धोतै उतरसु खेह ॥

Paa(nn)ee dhotai utarasu kheh ||

Water can wash away the dirt.

ਮੂਤ ਪਲੀਤੀ ਕਪੜੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

मूत पलीती कपड़ु होइ ॥

Moot paleetee kapa(rr)u hoi ||

When the clothes are soiled and stained by urine,

ਦੇ ਸਾਬੂਣੁ ਲਈਐ ਓਹੁ ਧੋਇ ॥

दे साबूणु लईऐ ओहु धोइ ॥

De saaboo(nn)u laeeai ohu dhoi ||

Soap can wash them clean.

ਭਰੀਐ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਪਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

भरीऐ मति पापा कै संगि ॥

Bhareeai mati paapaa kai sanggi ||

But when the intellect is stained and polluted by sin,

ਓਹੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥

ओहु धोपै नावै कै रंगि ॥

Ohu dhopai naavai kai ranggi ||

It can only be cleansed by the Love of the Name.

ਪੁੰਨੀ ਪਾਪੀ ਆਖਣੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

पुंनी पापी आखणु नाहि ॥

Punnee paapee aakha(nn)u naahi ||

Virtue and vice do not come by mere words;

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੁ ॥

करि करि करणा लिखि लै जाहु ॥

Kari kari kara(nn)aa likhi lai jaahu ||

Actions repeated, over and over again, are engraved on the soul.

ਆਪੇ ਬੀਜਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਖਾਹੁ ॥

आपे बीजि आपे ही खाहु ॥

Aape beeji aape hee khaahu ||

You shall harvest what you plant.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਹੁ ॥੨੦॥

नानक हुकमी आवहु जाहु ॥२०॥

Naanak hukamee aavahu jaahu ||20||

O Nanak, by the Hukam of God's Command, we come and go in reincarnation. ||20||


ਤੀਰਥੁ ਤਪੁ ਦਇਆ ਦਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

तीरथु तपु दइआ दतु दानु ॥

Teerathu tapu daiaa datu daanu ||

Pilgrimages, austere discipline, compassion and charity

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਿਲ ਕਾ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

जे को पावै तिल का मानु ॥

Je ko paavai til kaa maanu ||

These, by themselves, bring only an iota of merit.

ਸੁਣਿਆ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

सुणिआ मंनिआ मनि कीता भाउ ॥

Su(nn)iaa manniaa mani keetaa bhaau ||

Listening and believing with love and humility in your mind,

ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਉ ॥

अंतरगति तीरथि मलि नाउ ॥

Anttaragati teerathi mali naau ||

Cleanse yourself with the Name, at the sacred shrine deep within.

ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

सभि गुण तेरे मै नाही कोइ ॥

Sabhi gu(nn) tere mai naahee koi ||

All virtues are Yours, Lord, I have none at all.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

विणु गुण कीते भगति न होइ ॥

Vi(nn)u gu(nn) keete bhagati na hoi ||

Without virtue, there is no devotional worship.

ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਆਥਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਰਮਾਉ ॥

सुअसति आथि बाणी बरमाउ ॥

Suasati aathi baa(nn)ee baramaau ||

I bow to the Lord of the World, to His Word, to Brahma the Creator.

ਸਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਣੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥

सति सुहाणु सदा मनि चाउ ॥

Sati suhaa(nn)u sadaa mani chaau ||

He is Beautiful, True and Eternally Joyful.

ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਵਖਤੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਕਵਣ ਥਿਤਿ ਕਵਣੁ ਵਾਰੁ ॥

कवणु सु वेला वखतु कवणु कवण थिति कवणु वारु ॥

Kava(nn)u su velaa vakhatu kava(nn)u kava(nn) thiti kava(nn)u vaaru ||

What was that time, and what was that moment? What was that day, and what was that date?

ਕਵਣਿ ਸਿ ਰੁਤੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਹੋਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

कवणि सि रुती माहु कवणु जितु होआ आकारु ॥

Kava(nn)i si rutee maahu kava(nn)u jitu hoaa aakaaru ||

What was that season, and what was that month, when the Universe was created?

ਵੇਲ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਪੰਡਤੀ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੇਖੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥

वेल न पाईआ पंडती जि होवै लेखु पुराणु ॥

Vel na paaeeaa panddatee ji hovai lekhu puraa(nn)u ||

The Pandits, the religious scholars, cannot find that time, even if it is written in the Puraanas.

ਵਖਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਾਦੀਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਨਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥

वखतु न पाइओ कादीआ जि लिखनि लेखु कुराणु ॥

Vakhatu na paaio kaadeeaa ji likhani lekhu kuraa(nn)u ||

That time is not known to the Qazis, who study the Koran.

ਥਿਤਿ ਵਾਰੁ ਨਾ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਮਾਹੁ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ॥

थिति वारु ना जोगी जाणै रुति माहु ना कोई ॥

Thiti vaaru naa jogee jaa(nn)ai ruti maahu naa koee ||

The day and the date are not known to the Yogis, nor is the month or the season.

ਜਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਿਰਠੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

जा करता सिरठी कउ साजे आपे जाणै सोई ॥

Jaa karataa sirathee kau saaje aape jaa(nn)ai soee ||

The Creator who created this creation-only He Himself knows.

ਕਿਵ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਾ ਕਿਵ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਰਨੀ ਕਿਵ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

किव करि आखा किव सालाही किउ वरनी किव जाणा ॥

Kiv kari aakhaa kiv saalaahee kiu varanee kiv jaa(nn)aa ||

How can we speak of Him? How can we praise Him? How can we describe Him? How can we know Him?

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਇਕ ਦੂ ਇਕੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

नानक आखणि सभु को आखै इक दू इकु सिआणा ॥

Naanak aakha(nn)i sabhu ko aakhai ik doo iku siaa(nn)aa ||

O Nanak, everyone speaks of Him, each one wiser than the rest.

ਵਡਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਵਡੀ ਨਾਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

वडा साहिबु वडी नाई कीता जा का होवै ॥

Vadaa saahibu vadee naaee keetaa jaa kaa hovai ||

Great is the Master, Great is His Name. Whatever happens is according to His Will.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਪੌ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਨ ਸੋਹੈ ॥੨੧॥

नानक जे को आपौ जाणै अगै गइआ न सोहै ॥२१॥

Naanak je ko aapau jaa(nn)ai agai gaiaa na sohai ||21||

O Nanak, one who claims to know everything shall not be decorated in the world hereafter. ||21||


ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਲਖ ਆਗਾਸਾ ਆਗਾਸ ॥

पाताला पाताल लख आगासा आगास ॥

Paataalaa paataal lakh aagaasaa aagaas ||

There are nether worlds beneath nether worlds, and hundreds of thousands of heavenly worlds above.

ਓੜਕ ਓੜਕ ਭਾਲਿ ਥਕੇ ਵੇਦ ਕਹਨਿ ਇਕ ਵਾਤ ॥

ओड़क ओड़क भालि थके वेद कहनि इक वात ॥

O(rr)ak o(rr)ak bhaali thake ved kahani ik vaat ||

The Vedas say that you can search and search for them all, until you grow weary.

ਸਹਸ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਕਹਨਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਅਸੁਲੂ ਇਕੁ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

सहस अठारह कहनि कतेबा असुलू इकु धातु ॥

Sahas athaarah kahani katebaa asuloo iku dhaatu ||

The scriptures say that there are 18,000 worlds, but in reality, there is only One Universe.

ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥

लेखा होइ त लिखीऐ लेखै होइ विणासु ॥

Lekhaa hoi ta likheeai lekhai hoi vi(nn)aasu ||

If you try to write an account of this, you will surely finish yourself before you finish writing it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ ॥੨੨॥

नानक वडा आखीऐ आपे जाणै आपु ॥२२॥

Naanak vadaa aakheeai aape jaa(nn)ai aapu ||22||

O Nanak, call Him Great! He Himself knows Himself. ||22||


ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਏਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥

सालाही सालाहि एती सुरति न पाईआ ॥

Saalaahee saalaahi etee surati na paaeeaa ||

The praisers praise the Lord, but they do not obtain intuitive understanding

ਨਦੀਆ ਅਤੈ ਵਾਹ ਪਵਹਿ ਸਮੁੰਦਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ॥

नदीआ अतै वाह पवहि समुंदि न जाणीअहि ॥

Nadeeaa atai vaah pavahi samunddi na jaa(nn)eeahi ||

The streams and rivers flowing into the ocean do not know its vastness.

ਸਮੁੰਦ ਸਾਹ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਗਿਰਹਾ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਾਲੁ ਧਨੁ ॥

समुंद साह सुलतान गिरहा सेती मालु धनु ॥

Samundd saah sulataan girahaa setee maalu dhanu ||

Even kings and emperors, with mountains of property and oceans of wealth

ਕੀੜੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਨੀ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰਹਿ ॥੨੩॥

कीड़ी तुलि न होवनी जे तिसु मनहु न वीसरहि ॥२३॥

Kee(rr)ee tuli na hovanee je tisu manahu na veesarahi ||23||

-these are not even equal to an ant, who does not forget God. ||23||


ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ ॥

अंतु न सिफती कहणि न अंतु ॥

Anttu na siphatee kaha(nn)i na anttu ||

Endless are His Praises, endless are those who speak them.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਰਣੈ ਦੇਣਿ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ ॥

अंतु न करणै देणि न अंतु ॥

Anttu na kara(nn)ai de(nn)i na anttu ||

Endless are His Actions, endless are His Gifts.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਵੇਖਣਿ ਸੁਣਣਿ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ ॥

अंतु न वेखणि सुणणि न अंतु ॥

Anttu na vekha(nn)i su(nn)a(nn)i na anttu ||

Endless is His Vision, endless is His Hearing.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਮੰਤੁ ॥

अंतु न जापै किआ मनि मंतु ॥

Anttu na jaapai kiaa mani manttu ||

His limits cannot be perceived. What is the Mystery of His Mind?

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

अंतु न जापै कीता आकारु ॥

Anttu na jaapai keetaa aakaaru ||

The limits of the created universe cannot be perceived.

ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

अंतु न जापै पारावारु ॥

Anttu na jaapai paaraavaaru ||

Its limits here and beyond cannot be perceived.

ਅੰਤ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਿਲਲਾਹਿ ॥

अंत कारणि केते बिललाहि ॥

Antt kaara(nn)i kete bilalaahi ||

Many struggle to know His limits,

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

ता के अंत न पाए जाहि ॥

Taa ke antt na paae jaahi ||

But His limits cannot be found.

ਏਹੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

एहु अंतु न जाणै कोइ ॥

Ehu anttu na jaa(nn)ai koi ||

No one can know these limits.

ਬਹੁਤਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

बहुता कहीऐ बहुता होइ ॥

Bahutaa kaheeai bahutaa hoi ||

The more you say about them, the more there still remains to be said.

ਵਡਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਊਚਾ ਥਾਉ ॥

वडा साहिबु ऊचा थाउ ॥

Vadaa saahibu uchaa thaau ||

Great is the Master, High is His Heavenly Home.

ਊਚੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਊਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

ऊचे उपरि ऊचा नाउ ॥

Uche upari uchaa naau ||

Highest of the High, above all is His Name.

ਏਵਡੁ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

एवडु ऊचा होवै कोइ ॥

Evadu uchaa hovai koi ||

Only one as Great and as High as God

ਤਿਸੁ ਊਚੇ ਕਉ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

तिसु ऊचे कउ जाणै सोइ ॥

Tisu uche kau jaa(nn)ai soi ||

Can know His Lofty and Exalted State.

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ॥

जेवडु आपि जाणै आपि आपि ॥

Jevadu aapi jaa(nn)ai aapi aapi ||

Only He Himself is that Great. He Himself knows Himself.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੨੪॥

नानक नदरी करमी दाति ॥२४॥

Naanak nadaree karamee daati ||24||

O Nanak, by His Glance of Grace, He bestows His Blessings. ||24||


ਬਹੁਤਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

बहुता करमु लिखिआ ना जाइ ॥

Bahutaa karamu likhiaa naa jaai ||

His Blessings are so abundant that there can be no written account of them.

ਵਡਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥

वडा दाता तिलु न तमाइ ॥

Vadaa daataa tilu na tamaai ||

The Great Giver does not hold back anything.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਜੋਧ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

केते मंगहि जोध अपार ॥

Kete manggahi jodh apaar ||

There are so many great, heroic warriors begging at the Door of the Infinite Lord.

ਕੇਤਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨਹੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

केतिआ गणत नही वीचारु ॥

Ketiaa ga(nn)at nahee veechaaru ||

So many contemplate and dwell upon Him, that they cannot be counted.

ਕੇਤੇ ਖਪਿ ਤੁਟਹਿ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥

केते खपि तुटहि वेकार ॥

Kete khapi tutahi vekaar ||

So many waste away to death engaged in corruption.

ਕੇਤੇ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰੁ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

केते लै लै मुकरु पाहि ॥

Kete lai lai mukaru paahi ||

So many take and take again, and then deny receiving.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਖਾਹੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

केते मूरख खाही खाहि ॥

Kete moorakh khaahee khaahi ||

So many foolish consumers keep on consuming.

ਕੇਤਿਆ ਦੂਖ ਭੂਖ ਸਦ ਮਾਰ ॥

केतिआ दूख भूख सद मार ॥

Ketiaa dookh bhookh sad maar ||

So many endure distress, deprivation and constant abuse.

ਏਹਿ ਭਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਾਰ ॥

एहि भि दाति तेरी दातार ॥

Ehi bhi daati teree daataar ||

Even these are Your Gifts, O Great Giver!

ਬੰਦਿ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੋਇ ॥

बंदि खलासी भाणै होइ ॥

Banddi khalaasee bhaa(nn)ai hoi ||

Liberation from bondage comes only by Your Will.

ਹੋਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

होरु आखि न सकै कोइ ॥

Horu aakhi na sakai koi ||

No one else has any say in this.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਖਾਇਕੁ ਆਖਣਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

जे को खाइकु आखणि पाइ ॥

Je ko khaaiku aakha(nn)i paai ||

If some fool should presume to say that he does,

ਓਹੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇਤੀਆ ਮੁਹਿ ਖਾਇ ॥

ओहु जाणै जेतीआ मुहि खाइ ॥

Ohu jaa(nn)ai jeteeaa muhi khaai ||

He shall learn, and feel the effects of his folly.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ॥

आपे जाणै आपे देइ ॥

Aape jaa(nn)ai aape dei ||

He Himself knows, He Himself gives.

ਆਖਹਿ ਸਿ ਭਿ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥

आखहि सि भि केई केइ ॥

Aakhahi si bhi keee kei ||

Few, very few are those who acknowledge this.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

जिस नो बखसे सिफति सालाह ॥

Jis no bakhase siphati saalaah ||

One who is blessed to sing the Praises of the Lord,

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥੨੫॥

नानक पातिसाही पातिसाहु ॥२५॥

Naanak paatisaahee paatisaahu ||25||

O Nanak, is the king of kings. ||25||


ਅਮੁਲ ਗੁਣ ਅਮੁਲ ਵਾਪਾਰ ॥

अमुल गुण अमुल वापार ॥

Amul gu(nn) amul vaapaar ||

Priceless are His Virtues, Priceless are His Dealings.

ਅਮੁਲ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਏ ਅਮੁਲ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

अमुल वापारीए अमुल भंडार ॥

Amul vaapaareee amul bhanddaar ||

Priceless are His Dealers, Priceless are His Treasures.

ਅਮੁਲ ਆਵਹਿ ਅਮੁਲ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

अमुल आवहि अमुल लै जाहि ॥

Amul aavahi amul lai jaahi ||

Priceless are those who come to Him, Priceless are those who buy from Him.

ਅਮੁਲ ਭਾਇ ਅਮੁਲਾ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

अमुल भाइ अमुला समाहि ॥

Amul bhaai amulaa samaahi ||

Priceless is Love for Him, Priceless is absorption into Him.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥

अमुलु धरमु अमुलु दीबाणु ॥

Amulu dharamu amulu deebaa(nn)u ||

Priceless is the Divine Law of Dharma, Priceless is the Divine Court of Justice.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਤੁਲੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

अमुलु तुलु अमुलु परवाणु ॥

Amulu tulu amulu paravaa(nn)u ||

Priceless are the scales, priceless are the weights.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

अमुलु बखसीस अमुलु नीसाणु ॥

Amulu bakhasees amulu neesaa(nn)u ||

Priceless are His Blessings, Priceless is His Banner and Insignia.

ਅਮੁਲੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ ॥

अमुलु करमु अमुलु फुरमाणु ॥

Amulu karamu amulu phuramaa(nn)u ||

Priceless is His Mercy, Priceless is His Royal Command.

ਅਮੁਲੋ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਆਖਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

अमुलो अमुलु आखिआ न जाइ ॥

Amulo amulu aakhiaa na jaai ||

Priceless, O Priceless beyond expression!

ਆਖਿ ਆਖਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

आखि आखि रहे लिव लाइ ॥

Aakhi aakhi rahe liv laai ||

Speak of Him continually, and remain absorbed in His Love.

ਆਖਹਿ ਵੇਦ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥

आखहि वेद पाठ पुराण ॥

Aakhahi ved paath puraa(nn) ||

The Vedas and the Puraanas speak.

ਆਖਹਿ ਪੜੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ॥

आखहि पड़े करहि वखिआण ॥

Aakhahi pa(rr)e karahi vakhiaa(nn) ||

The scholars speak and lecture.

ਆਖਹਿ ਬਰਮੇ ਆਖਹਿ ਇੰਦ ॥

आखहि बरमे आखहि इंद ॥

Aakhahi barame aakhahi iandd ||

Brahma speaks, Indra speaks.

ਆਖਹਿ ਗੋਪੀ ਤੈ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ॥

आखहि गोपी तै गोविंद ॥

Aakhahi gopee tai govindd ||

The Gopis and Krishna speak.

ਆਖਹਿ ਈਸਰ ਆਖਹਿ ਸਿਧ ॥

आखहि ईसर आखहि सिध ॥

Aakhahi eesar aakhahi sidh ||

Shiva speaks, the Siddhas speak.

ਆਖਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਬੁਧ ॥

आखहि केते कीते बुध ॥

Aakhahi kete keete budh ||

The many created Buddhas speak.

ਆਖਹਿ ਦਾਨਵ ਆਖਹਿ ਦੇਵ ॥

आखहि दानव आखहि देव ॥

Aakhahi daanav aakhahi dev ||

The demons speak, the demi-gods speak.

ਆਖਹਿ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵ ॥

आखहि सुरि नर मुनि जन सेव ॥

Aakhahi suri nar muni jan sev ||

The spiritual warriors, the heavenly beings, the silent sages, the humble and serviceful speak.

ਕੇਤੇ ਆਖਹਿ ਆਖਣਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

केते आखहि आखणि पाहि ॥

Kete aakhahi aakha(nn)i paahi ||

Many speak and try to describe Him.

ਕੇਤੇ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

केते कहि कहि उठि उठि जाहि ॥

Kete kahi kahi uthi uthi jaahi ||

Many have spoken of Him over and over again, and have then arisen and departed.

ਏਤੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਰੇਹਿ ॥

एते कीते होरि करेहि ॥

Ete keete hori karehi ||

If He were to create as many again as there already are,

ਤਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਕੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥

ता आखि न सकहि केई केइ ॥

Taa aakhi na sakahi keee kei ||

Even then, they could not describe Him.

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਵਡੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

जेवडु भावै तेवडु होइ ॥

Jevadu bhaavai tevadu hoi ||

He is as Great as He wishes to be.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

नानक जाणै साचा सोइ ॥

Naanak jaa(nn)ai saachaa soi ||

O Nanak, the True Lord knows.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਬੋਲੁਵਿਗਾੜੁ ॥

जे को आखै बोलुविगाड़ु ॥

Je ko aakhai boluvigaa(rr)u ||

If anyone presumes to describe God,

ਤਾ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਸਿਰਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੨੬॥

ता लिखीऐ सिरि गावारा गावारु ॥२६॥

Taa likheeai siri gaavaaraa gaavaaru ||26||

He shall be known as the greatest fool of fools! ||26||


ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਬਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥

सो दरु केहा सो घरु केहा जितु बहि सरब समाले ॥

So daru kehaa so gharu kehaa jitu bahi sarab samaale ||

Where is that Gate, and where is that Dwelling, in which You sit and take care of all?

ਵਾਜੇ ਨਾਦ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖਾ ਕੇਤੇ ਵਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

वाजे नाद अनेक असंखा केते वावणहारे ॥

Vaaje naad anek asankkhaa kete vaava(nn)ahaare ||

The Sound-current of the Naad vibrates there, and countless musicians play on all sorts of instruments there.

ਕੇਤੇ ਰਾਗ ਪਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਅਨਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

केते राग परी सिउ कहीअनि केते गावणहारे ॥

Kete raag paree siu kaheeani kete gaava(nn)ahaare ||

So many Ragas, so many musicians singing there.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਹਨੋ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥

गावहि तुहनो पउणु पाणी बैसंतरु गावै राजा धरमु दुआरे ॥

Gaavahi tuhano pau(nn)u paa(nn)ee baisanttaru gaavai raajaa dharamu duaare ||

The praanic wind, water and fire sing; the Righteous Judge of Dharma sings at Your Door.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

गावहि चितु गुपतु लिखि जाणहि लिखि लिखि धरमु वीचारे ॥

Gaavahi chitu gupatu likhi jaa(nn)ahi likhi likhi dharamu veechaare ||

Chitr and Gupt, the angels of the conscious and the subconscious who record actions, and the Righteous Judge of Dharma who judges this record sing.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਈਸਰੁ ਬਰਮਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥

गावहि ईसरु बरमा देवी सोहनि सदा सवारे ॥

Gaavahi eesaru baramaa devee sohani sadaa savaare ||

Shiva, Brahma and the Goddess of Beauty, ever adorned, sing.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਇੰਦ ਇਦਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

गावहि इंद इदासणि बैठे देवतिआ दरि नाले ॥

Gaavahi iandd idaasa(nn)i baithe devatiaa dari naale ||

Indra, seated upon His Throne, sings with the deities at Your Door.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸਾਧ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ॥

गावहि सिध समाधी अंदरि गावनि साध विचारे ॥

Gaavahi sidh samaadhee anddari gaavani saadh vichaare ||

The Siddhas in Samaadhi sing; the Saadhus sing in contemplation.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਵੀਰ ਕਰਾਰੇ ॥

गावनि जती सती संतोखी गावहि वीर करारे ॥

Gaavani jatee satee santtokhee gaavahi veer karaare ||

The celibates, the fanatics, the peacefully accepting and the fearless warriors sing.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਨਿ ਰਖੀਸਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਵੇਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

गावनि पंडित पड़नि रखीसर जुगु जुगु वेदा नाले ॥

Gaavani panddit pa(rr)ani rakheesar jugu jugu vedaa naale ||

The Pandits, the religious scholars who recite the Vedas, with the supreme sages of all the ages, sing.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਸੁਰਗਾ ਮਛ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥

गावहि मोहणीआ मनु मोहनि सुरगा मछ पइआले ॥

Gaavahi moha(nn)eeaa manu mohani suragaa machh paiaale ||

The Mohinis, the enchanting heavenly beauties who entice hearts in this world, in paradise, and in the underworld of the subconscious sing.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਰਤਨ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

गावनि रतन उपाए तेरे अठसठि तीरथ नाले ॥

Gaavani ratan upaae tere athasathi teerath naale ||

The celestial jewels created by You, and the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage sing.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋਧ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰਾ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

गावहि जोध महाबल सूरा गावहि खाणी चारे ॥

Gaavahi jodh mahaabal sooraa gaavahi khaa(nn)ee chaare ||

The brave and mighty warriors sing; the spiritual heroes and the four sources of creation sing.

ਗਾਵਹਿ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਰਭੰਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

गावहि खंड मंडल वरभंडा करि करि रखे धारे ॥

Gaavahi khandd manddal varabhanddaa kari kari rakhe dhaare ||

The planets, solar systems and galaxies, created and arranged by Your Hand, sing.

ਸੇਈ ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਨਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਸਾਲੇ ॥

सेई तुधुनो गावहि जो तुधु भावनि रते तेरे भगत रसाले ॥

Seee tudhuno gaavahi jo tudhu bhaavani rate tere bhagat rasaale ||

They alone sing, who are pleasing to Your Will. Your devotees are imbued with the Nectar of Your Essence.

ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਮੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

होरि केते गावनि से मै चिति न आवनि नानकु किआ वीचारे ॥

Hori kete gaavani se mai chiti na aavani naanaku kiaa veechaare ||

So many others sing, they do not come to mind. O Nanak, how can I consider them all?

ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥

सोई सोई सदा सचु साहिबु साचा साची नाई ॥

Soee soee sadaa sachu saahibu saachaa saachee naaee ||

That True Lord is True, Forever True, and True is His Name.

ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਸੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਾਈ ॥

है भी होसी जाइ न जासी रचना जिनि रचाई ॥

Hai bhee hosee jaai na jaasee rachanaa jini rachaaee ||

He is, and shall always be. He shall not depart, even when this Universe which He has created departs.

ਰੰਗੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਭਾਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥

रंगी रंगी भाती करि करि जिनसी माइआ जिनि उपाई ॥

Ranggee ranggee bhaatee kari kari jinasee maaiaa jini upaaee ||

He created the world, with its various colors, species of beings, and the variety of Maya.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਵ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

करि करि वेखै कीता आपणा जिव तिस दी वडिआई ॥

Kari kari vekhai keetaa aapa(nn)aa jiv tis dee vadiaaee ||

Having created the creation, He watches over it Himself, by His Greatness.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥

जो तिसु भावै सोई करसी हुकमु न करणा जाई ॥

Jo tisu bhaavai soee karasee hukamu na kara(nn)aa jaaee ||

He does whatever He pleases. No order can be issued to Him.

ਸੋ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਣੁ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੨੭॥

सो पातिसाहु साहा पातिसाहिबु नानक रहणु रजाई ॥२७॥

So paatisaahu saahaa paatisaahibu naanak raha(nn)u rajaaee ||27||

He is the King, the King of kings, the Supreme Lord and Master of kings. Nanak remains subject to His Will. ||27||


ਮੁੰਦਾ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰਮੁ ਪਤੁ ਝੋਲੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਿ ॥

मुंदा संतोखु सरमु पतु झोली धिआन की करहि बिभूति ॥

Munddaa santtokhu saramu patu jholee dhiaan kee karahi bibhooti ||

Make contentment your ear-rings, humility your begging bowl, and meditation the ashes you apply to your body.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਡੰਡਾ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ॥

खिंथा कालु कुआरी काइआ जुगति डंडा परतीति ॥

Khintthaa kaalu kuaaree kaaiaa jugati danddaa parateeti ||

Let the remembrance of death be the patched coat you wear, let the purity of virginity be your way in the world, and let faith in the Lord be your walking stick.

ਆਈ ਪੰਥੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਮਾਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗੁ ਜੀਤੁ ॥

आई पंथी सगल जमाती मनि जीतै जगु जीतु ॥

Aaee pantthee sagal jamaatee mani jeetai jagu jeetu ||

See the brotherhood of all mankind as the highest order of Yogis; conquer your own mind, and conquer the world.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

आदेसु तिसै आदेसु ॥

Aadesu tisai aadesu ||

I bow to Him, I humbly bow.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ ॥੨੮॥

आदि अनीलु अनादि अनाहति जुगु जुगु एको वेसु ॥२८॥

Aadi aneelu anaadi anaahati jugu jugu eko vesu ||28||

The Primal One, the Pure Light, without beginning, without end. Throughout all the ages, He is One and the Same. ||28||


ਭੁਗਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦਇਆ ਭੰਡਾਰਣਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥

भुगति गिआनु दइआ भंडारणि घटि घटि वाजहि नाद ॥

Bhugati giaanu daiaa bhanddaara(nn)i ghati ghati vaajahi naad ||

Let spiritual wisdom be your food, and compassion your attendant. The Sound-current of the Naad vibrates in each and every heart.

ਆਪਿ ਨਾਥੁ ਨਾਥੀ ਸਭ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਰਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਾਦ ॥

आपि नाथु नाथी सभ जा की रिधि सिधि अवरा साद ॥

Aapi naathu naathee sabh jaa kee ridhi sidhi avaraa saad ||

He Himself is the Supreme Master of all; wealth and miraculous spiritual powers, and all other external tastes and pleasures, are all like beads on a string.

ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਦੁਇ ਕਾਰ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਲੇਖੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਭਾਗ ॥

संजोगु विजोगु दुइ कार चलावहि लेखे आवहि भाग ॥

Sanjjogu vijogu dui kaar chalaavahi lekhe aavahi bhaag ||

Union with Him, and separation from Him, come by His Will. We come to receive what is written in our destiny.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

आदेसु तिसै आदेसु ॥

Aadesu tisai aadesu ||

I bow to Him, I humbly bow.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ ॥੨੯॥

आदि अनीलु अनादि अनाहति जुगु जुगु एको वेसु ॥२९॥

Aadi aneelu anaadi anaahati jugu jugu eko vesu ||29||

The Primal One, the Pure Light, without beginning, without end. Throughout all the ages, He is One and the Same. ||29||


ਏਕਾ ਮਾਈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵਿਆਈ ਤਿਨਿ ਚੇਲੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

एका माई जुगति विआई तिनि चेले परवाणु ॥

Ekaa maaee jugati viaaee tini chele paravaa(nn)u ||

The One Divine Mother conceived and gave birth to the three deities.

ਇਕੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਇਕੁ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ਇਕੁ ਲਾਏ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥

इकु संसारी इकु भंडारी इकु लाए दीबाणु ॥

Iku sanssaaree iku bhanddaaree iku laae deebaa(nn)u ||

One, the Creator of the World; One, the Sustainer; and One, the Destroyer.

ਜਿਵ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ਜਿਵ ਹੋਵੈ ਫੁਰਮਾਣੁ ॥

जिव तिसु भावै तिवै चलावै जिव होवै फुरमाणु ॥

Jiv tisu bhaavai tivai chalaavai jiv hovai phuramaa(nn)u ||

He makes things happen according to the Pleasure of His Will. Such is His Celestial Order.

ਓਹੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਓਨਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ॥

ओहु वेखै ओना नदरि न आवै बहुता एहु विडाणु ॥

Ohu vekhai onaa nadari na aavai bahutaa ehu vidaa(nn)u ||

He watches over all, but none see Him. How wonderful this is!

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

आदेसु तिसै आदेसु ॥

Aadesu tisai aadesu ||

I bow to Him, I humbly bow.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ ॥੩੦॥

आदि अनीलु अनादि अनाहति जुगु जुगु एको वेसु ॥३०॥

Aadi aneelu anaadi anaahati jugu jugu eko vesu ||30||

The Primal One, the Pure Light, without beginning, without end. Throughout all the ages, He is One and the Same. ||30||


ਆਸਣੁ ਲੋਇ ਲੋਇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

आसणु लोइ लोइ भंडार ॥

Aasa(nn)u loi loi bhanddaar ||

On world after world are His Seats of Authority and His Storehouses.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ ॥

जो किछु पाइआ सु एका वार ॥

Jo kichhu paaiaa su ekaa vaar ||

Whatever was put into them, was put there once and for all.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

करि करि वेखै सिरजणहारु ॥

Kari kari vekhai siraja(nn)ahaaru ||

Having created the creation, the Creator Lord watches over it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

नानक सचे की साची कार ॥

Naanak sache kee saachee kaar ||

O Nanak, True is the Creation of the True Lord.

ਆਦੇਸੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

आदेसु तिसै आदेसु ॥

Aadesu tisai aadesu ||

I bow to Him, I humbly bow.

ਆਦਿ ਅਨੀਲੁ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਤਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸੁ ॥੩੧॥

आदि अनीलु अनादि अनाहति जुगु जुगु एको वेसु ॥३१॥

Aadi aneelu anaadi anaahati jugu jugu eko vesu ||31||

The Primal One, the Pure Light, without beginning, without end. Throughout all the ages, He is One and the Same. ||31||


ਇਕ ਦੂ ਜੀਭੌ ਲਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਲਖ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਲਖ ਵੀਸ ॥

इक दू जीभौ लख होहि लख होवहि लख वीस ॥

Ik doo jeebhau lakh hohi lakh hovahi lakh vees ||

If I had 100,000 tongues, and these were then multiplied twenty times more, with each tongue,

ਲਖੁ ਲਖੁ ਗੇੜਾ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥

लखु लखु गेड़ा आखीअहि एकु नामु जगदीस ॥

Lakhu lakhu ge(rr)aa aakheeahi eku naamu jagadees ||

I would repeat, hundreds of thousands of times, the Name of the One, the Lord of the Universe.

ਏਤੁ ਰਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੜੀਆ ਚੜੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਇਕੀਸ ॥

एतु राहि पति पवड़ीआ चड़ीऐ होइ इकीस ॥

Along this path to our Husband Lord, we climb the steps of the ladder, and come to merge with Him.

ਸੁਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਆਕਾਸ ਕੀ ਕੀਟਾ ਆਈ ਰੀਸ ॥

सुणि गला आकास की कीटा आई रीस ॥

Su(nn)i galaa aakaas kee keetaa aaee rees ||

Hearing of the etheric realms, even worms long to come back home.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੀ ਕੂੜੈ ਠੀਸ ॥੩੨॥

नानक नदरी पाईऐ कूड़ी कूड़ै ठीस ॥३२॥

Naanak nadaree paaeeai koo(rr)ee koo(rr)ai thees ||32||

O Nanak, by His Grace He is obtained. False are the boastings of the false. ||32||


ਆਖਣਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਚੁਪੈ ਨਹ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

आखणि जोरु चुपै नह जोरु ॥

Aakha(nn)i joru chupai nah joru ||

No power to speak, no power to keep silent.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਦੇਣਿ ਨ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

जोरु न मंगणि देणि न जोरु ॥

Joru na mangga(nn)i de(nn)i na joru ||

No power to beg, no power to give.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਜੀਵਣਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਨਹ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

जोरु न जीवणि मरणि नह जोरु ॥

Joru na jeeva(nn)i mara(nn)i nah joru ||

No power to live, no power to die.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਰਾਜਿ ਮਾਲਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਰੁ ॥

जोरु न राजि मालि मनि सोरु ॥

Joru na raaji maali mani soru ||

No power to rule, with wealth and occult mental powers.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

जोरु न सुरती गिआनि वीचारि ॥

Joru na suratee giaani veechaari ||

No power to gain intuitive understanding, spiritual wisdom and meditation.

ਜੋਰੁ ਨ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਛੁਟੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

जोरु न जुगती छुटै संसारु ॥

Joru na jugatee chhutai sanssaaru ||

No power to find the way to escape from the world.

ਜਿਸੁ ਹਥਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

जिसु हथि जोरु करि वेखै सोइ ॥

Jisu hathi joru kari vekhai soi ||

He alone has the Power in His Hands. He watches over all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਤਮੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੩੩॥

नानक उतमु नीचु न कोइ ॥३३॥

Naanak utamu neechu na koi ||33||

O Nanak, no one is high or low. ||33||


ਰਾਤੀ ਰੁਤੀ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰ ॥

राती रुती थिती वार ॥

Raatee rutee thitee vaar ||

Nights, days, weeks and seasons;

ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਤਾਲ ॥

पवण पाणी अगनी पाताल ॥

Pava(nn) paa(nn)ee aganee paataal ||

Wind, water, fire and the nether regions

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਥਾਪਿ ਰਖੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲ ॥

तिसु विचि धरती थापि रखी धरम साल ॥

Tisu vichi dharatee thaapi rakhee dharam saal ||

In the midst of these, He established the earth as a home for Dharma.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ॥

तिसु विचि जीअ जुगति के रंग ॥

Tisu vichi jeea jugati ke rangg ||

Upon it, He placed the various species of beings.

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਨੰਤ ॥

तिन के नाम अनेक अनंत ॥

Tin ke naam anek anantt ||

Their names are uncounted and endless.

ਕਰਮੀ ਕਰਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

करमी करमी होइ वीचारु ॥

Karamee karamee hoi veechaaru ||

By their deeds and their actions, they shall be judged.

ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਸਚਾ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥

सचा आपि सचा दरबारु ॥

Sachaa aapi sachaa darabaaru ||

God Himself is True, and True is His Court.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਪੰਚ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

तिथै सोहनि पंच परवाणु ॥

Tithai sohani pancch paravaa(nn)u ||

There, in perfect grace and ease, sit the self-elect, the self-realized Saints.

ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

नदरी करमि पवै नीसाणु ॥

Nadaree karami pavai neesaa(nn)u ||

They receive the Mark of Grace from the Merciful Lord.

ਕਚ ਪਕਾਈ ਓਥੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

कच पकाई ओथै पाइ ॥

Kach pakaaee othai paai ||

The ripe and the unripe, the good and the bad, shall there be judged.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਪੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੩੪॥

नानक गइआ जापै जाइ ॥३४॥

Naanak gaiaa jaapai jaai ||34||

O Nanak, when you go home, you will see this. ||34||


ਧਰਮ ਖੰਡ ਕਾ ਏਹੋ ਧਰਮੁ ॥

धरम खंड का एहो धरमु ॥

Dharam khandd kaa eho dharamu ||

This is righteous living in the realm of Dharma.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੰਡ ਕਾ ਆਖਹੁ ਕਰਮੁ ॥

गिआन खंड का आखहु करमु ॥

Giaan khandd kaa aakhahu karamu ||

And now we speak of the realm of spiritual wisdom.

ਕੇਤੇ ਪਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਵੈਸੰਤਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਕਾਨ ਮਹੇਸ ॥

केते पवण पाणी वैसंतर केते कान महेस ॥

Kete pava(nn) paa(nn)ee vaisanttar kete kaan mahes ||

So many winds, waters and fires; so many Krishnas and Shivas.

ਕੇਤੇ ਬਰਮੇ ਘਾੜਤਿ ਘੜੀਅਹਿ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਕੇ ਵੇਸ ॥

केते बरमे घाड़ति घड़ीअहि रूप रंग के वेस ॥

Kete barame ghaa(rr)ati gha(rr)eeahi roop rangg ke ves ||

So many Brahmas, fashioning forms of great beauty, adorned and dressed in many colors.

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਕਰਮ ਭੂਮੀ ਮੇਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਧੂ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥

केतीआ करम भूमी मेर केते केते धू उपदेस ॥

Keteeaa karam bhoomee mer kete kete dhoo upades ||

So many worlds and lands for working out karma. So very many lessons to be learned!

ਕੇਤੇ ਇੰਦ ਚੰਦ ਸੂਰ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੰਡਲ ਦੇਸ ॥

केते इंद चंद सूर केते केते मंडल देस ॥

Kete iandd chandd soor kete kete manddal des ||

So many Indras, so many moons and suns, so many worlds and lands.

ਕੇਤੇ ਸਿਧ ਬੁਧ ਨਾਥ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਵੇਸ ॥

केते सिध बुध नाथ केते केते देवी वेस ॥

Kete sidh budh naath kete kete devee ves ||

So many Siddhas and Buddhas, so many Yogic masters. So many goddesses of various kinds.

ਕੇਤੇ ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵ ਮੁਨਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਰਤਨ ਸਮੁੰਦ ॥

केते देव दानव मुनि केते केते रतन समुंद ॥

Kete dev daanav muni kete kete ratan samundd ||

So many demi-gods and demons, so many silent sages. So many oceans of jewels.

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਖਾਣੀ ਕੇਤੀਆ ਬਾਣੀ ਕੇਤੇ ਪਾਤ ਨਰਿੰਦ ॥

केतीआ खाणी केतीआ बाणी केते पात नरिंद ॥

Keteeaa khaa(nn)ee keteeaa baa(nn)ee kete paat narindd ||

So many ways of life, so many languages. So many dynasties of rulers.

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਅੰਤੁ ॥੩੫॥

केतीआ सुरती सेवक केते नानक अंतु न अंतु ॥३५॥

Keteeaa suratee sevak kete naanak anttu na anttu ||35||

So many intuitive people, so many selfless servants. O Nanak, His limit has no limit! ||35||


ਗਿਆਨ ਖੰਡ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਰਚੰਡੁ ॥

गिआन खंड महि गिआनु परचंडु ॥

Giaan khandd mahi giaanu parachanddu ||

In the realm of wisdom, spiritual wisdom reigns supreme.

ਤਿਥੈ ਨਾਦ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਕੋਡ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥

तिथै नाद बिनोद कोड अनंदु ॥

Tithai naad binod kod ananddu ||

The Sound-current of the Naad vibrates there, amidst the sounds and the sights of bliss.

ਸਰਮ ਖੰਡ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਰੂਪੁ ॥

सरम खंड की बाणी रूपु ॥

Saram khandd kee baa(nn)ee roopu ||

In the realm of humility, the Word is Beauty.

ਤਿਥੈ ਘਾੜਤਿ ਘੜੀਐ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥

तिथै घाड़ति घड़ीऐ बहुतु अनूपु ॥

Tithai ghaa(rr)ati gha(rr)eeai bahutu anoopu ||

Forms of incomparable beauty are fashioned there.

ਤਾ ਕੀਆ ਗਲਾ ਕਥੀਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

ता कीआ गला कथीआ ना जाहि ॥

Taa keeaa galaa katheeaa naa jaahi ||

These things cannot be described.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥

जे को कहै पिछै पछुताइ ॥

Je ko kahai pichhai pachhutaai ||

One who tries to speak of these shall regret the attempt.

ਤਿਥੈ ਘੜੀਐ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਬੁਧਿ ॥

तिथै घड़ीऐ सुरति मति मनि बुधि ॥

Tithai gha(rr)eeai surati mati mani budhi ||

The intuitive consciousness, intellect and understanding of the mind are shaped there.

ਤਿਥੈ ਘੜੀਐ ਸੁਰਾ ਸਿਧਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ॥੩੬॥

तिथै घड़ीऐ सुरा सिधा की सुधि ॥३६॥

Tithai gha(rr)eeai suraa sidhaa kee sudhi ||36||

The consciousness of the spiritual warriors and the Siddhas, the beings of spiritual perfection, are shaped there. ||36||


ਕਰਮ ਖੰਡ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

करम खंड की बाणी जोरु ॥

Karam khandd kee baa(nn)ee joru ||

In the realm of karma, the Word is Power.

ਤਿਥੈ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥

तिथै होरु न कोई होरु ॥

Tithai horu na koee horu ||

No one else dwells there,

ਤਿਥੈ ਜੋਧ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰ ॥

तिथै जोध महाबल सूर ॥

Tithai jodh mahaabal soor ||

Except the warriors of great power, the spiritual heroes.

ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰ ॥

तिन महि रामु रहिआ भरपूर ॥

Tin mahi raamu rahiaa bharapoor ||

They are totally fulfilled, imbued with the Lord's Essence.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸੀਤੋ ਸੀਤਾ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

तिथै सीतो सीता महिमा माहि ॥

Tithai seeto seetaa mahimaa maahi ||

Myriads of Sitas are there, cool and calm in their majestic glory.

ਤਾ ਕੇ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਕਥਨੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

ता के रूप न कथने जाहि ॥

Taa ke roop na kathane jaahi ||

Their beauty cannot be described.

ਨਾ ਓਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਠਾਗੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

ना ओहि मरहि न ठागे जाहि ॥

Naa ohi marahi na thaage jaahi ||

Neither death nor deception comes to those,

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

जिन कै रामु वसै मन माहि ॥

Jin kai raamu vasai man maahi ||

Within whose minds the Lord abides.

ਤਿਥੈ ਭਗਤ ਵਸਹਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਅ ॥

तिथै भगत वसहि के लोअ ॥

Tithai bhagat vasahi ke loa ||

The devotees of many worlds dwell there.

ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥

करहि अनंदु सचा मनि सोइ ॥

Karahi ananddu sachaa mani soi ||

They celebrate; their minds are imbued with the True Lord.

ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

सच खंडि वसै निरंकारु ॥

Sach khanddi vasai nirankkaaru ||

In the realm of Truth, the Formless Lord abides.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥

करि करि वेखै नदरि निहाल ॥

Kari kari vekhai nadari nihaal ||

Having created the creation, He watches over it. By His Glance of Grace, He bestows happiness.

ਤਿਥੈ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਰਭੰਡ ॥

तिथै खंड मंडल वरभंड ॥

Tithai khandd manddal varabhandd ||

There are planets, solar systems and galaxies.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਥੈ ਤ ਅੰਤ ਨ ਅੰਤ ॥

जे को कथै त अंत न अंत ॥

Je ko kathai ta antt na antt ||

If one speaks of them, there is no limit, no end.

ਤਿਥੈ ਲੋਅ ਲੋਅ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

तिथै लोअ लोअ आकार ॥

Tithai loa loa aakaar ||

There are worlds upon worlds of His Creation.

ਜਿਵ ਜਿਵ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਵੈ ਤਿਵ ਕਾਰ ॥

जिव जिव हुकमु तिवै तिव कार ॥

Jiv jiv hukamu tivai tiv kaar ||

As He commands, so they exist.

ਵੇਖੈ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਕਰਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

वेखै विगसै करि वीचारु ॥

Vekhai vigasai kari veechaaru ||

He watches over all, and contemplating the creation, He rejoices.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਥਨਾ ਕਰੜਾ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੩੭॥

नानक कथना करड़ा सारु ॥३७॥

Naanak kathanaa kara(rr)aa saaru ||37||

O Nanak, to describe this is as hard as steel! ||37||


ਜਤੁ ਪਾਹਾਰਾ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਸੁਨਿਆਰੁ ॥

जतु पाहारा धीरजु सुनिआरु ॥

Jatu paahaaraa dheeraju suniaaru ||

Let self-control be the furnace, and patience the goldsmith.

ਅਹਰਣਿ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਦੁ ਹਥੀਆਰੁ ॥

अहरणि मति वेदु हथीआरु ॥

Ahara(nn)i mati vedu hatheeaaru ||

Let understanding be the anvil, and spiritual wisdom the tools.

ਭਉ ਖਲਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਪ ਤਾਉ ॥

भउ खला अगनि तप ताउ ॥

Bhau khalaa agani tap taau ||

With the Fear of God as the bellows, fan the flames of tapa, the body's inner heat.

ਭਾਂਡਾ ਭਾਉ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਢਾਲਿ ॥

भांडा भाउ अम्रितु तितु ढालि ॥

Bhaandaa bhaau ammmritu titu dhaali ||

In the crucible of love, melt the Nectar of the Name,

ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੀ ਟਕਸਾਲ ॥

घड़ीऐ सबदु सची टकसाल ॥

Gha(rr)eeai sabadu sachee takasaal ||

And mint the True Coin of the Shabad, the Word of God.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰ ॥

जिन कउ नदरि करमु तिन कार ॥

Jin kau nadari karamu tin kaar ||

Such is the karma of those upon whom He has cast His Glance of Grace.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੩੮॥

नानक नदरी नदरि निहाल ॥३८॥

Naanak nadaree nadari nihaal ||38||

O Nanak, the Merciful Lord, by His Grace, uplifts and exalts them. ||38||

ਪਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਧਰਤਿ ਮਹਤੁ ॥

पवणु गुरू पाणी पिता माता धरति महतु ॥

Pava(nn)u guroo paa(nn)ee pitaa maataa dharati mahatu ||

Air is the Guru, Water is the Father, and Earth is the Great Mother of all.

ਦਿਵਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥

दिवसु राति दुइ दाई दाइआ खेलै सगल जगतु ॥

Divasu raati dui daaee daaiaa khelai sagal jagatu ||

Day and night are the two nurses, in whose lap all the world is at play.

ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ਵਾਚੈ ਧਰਮੁ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥

चंगिआईआ बुरिआईआ वाचै धरमु हदूरि ॥

Changgiaaeeaa buriaaeeaa vaachai dharamu hadoori ||

Good deeds and bad deeds-the record is read out in the Presence of the Lord of Dharma.

ਕਰਮੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਕੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

करमी आपो आपणी के नेड़ै के दूरि ॥

Karamee aapo aapa(nn)ee ke ne(rr)ai ke doori ||

According to their own actions, some are drawn closer, and some are driven farther away.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗਏ ਮਸਕਤਿ ਘਾਲਿ ॥

जिनी नामु धिआइआ गए मसकति घालि ॥

Jinee naamu dhiaaiaa gae masakati ghaali ||

Those who have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and departed after having worked by the sweat of their brows

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਕੇਤੀ ਛੁਟੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

नानक ते मुख उजले केती छुटी नालि ॥१॥

Naanak te mukh ujale ketee chhutee naali ||1||

-O Nanak, their faces are radiant in the Court of the Lord, and many are saved along with them! ||1||
