ਸੁਣਿ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

सुणि वडा आखै सभु कोइ ॥

Su(nn)i vadaa aakhai sabhu koi ||

Hearing of His Greatness, everyone calls Him Great.

ਕੇਵਡੁ ਵਡਾ ਡੀਠਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

केवडु वडा डीठा होइ ॥

Kevadu vadaa deethaa hoi ||

But just how Great His Greatness is-this is known only to those who have seen Him.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

कीमति पाइ न कहिआ जाइ ॥

Keemati paai na kahiaa jaai ||

His Value cannot be estimated; He cannot be described.

ਕਹਣੈ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

कहणै वाले तेरे रहे समाइ ॥१॥

Kaha(nn)ai vaale tere rahe samaai ||1||

Those who describe You, Lord, remain immersed and absorbed in You. ||1||

ਵਡੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥

वडे मेरे साहिबा गहिर ग्मभीरा गुणी गहीरा ॥

Vade mere saahibaa gahir gambbheeraa gu(nn)ee gaheeraa ||

O my Great Lord and Master of Unfathomable Depth, You are the Ocean of Excellence.

ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਤਾ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਚੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कोइ न जाणै तेरा केता केवडु चीरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Koi na jaa(nn)ai teraa ketaa kevadu cheeraa ||1|| rahaau ||

No one knows the extent or the vastness of Your Expanse. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥

सभि सुरती मिलि सुरति कमाई ॥

Sabhi suratee mili surati kamaaee ||

All the intuitives met and practiced intuitive meditation.

ਸਭ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

सभ कीमति मिलि कीमति पाई ॥

Sabh keemati mili keemati paaee ||

All the appraisers met and made the appraisal.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰਹਾਈ ॥

गिआनी धिआनी गुर गुरहाई ॥

Giaanee dhiaanee gur gurahaaee ||

The spiritual teachers, the teachers of meditation, and the teachers of teachers

ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥

कहणु न जाई तेरी तिलु वडिआई ॥२॥

Kaha(nn)u na jaaee teree tilu vadiaaee ||2||

-they cannot describe even an iota of Your Greatness. ||2||

ਸਭਿ ਸਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ॥

सभि सत सभि तप सभि चंगिआईआ ॥

Sabhi sat sabhi tap sabhi changgiaaeeaa ||

All Truth, all austere discipline, all goodness,

ਸਿਧਾ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

सिधा पुरखा कीआ वडिआईआ ॥

Sidhaa purakhaa keeaa vadiaaeeaa ||

All the great miraculous spiritual powers of the Siddhas

ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥

तुधु विणु सिधी किनै न पाईआ ॥

Tudhu vi(nn)u sidhee kinai na paaeeaa ||

Without You, no one has attained such powers.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈਆ ॥੩॥

करमि मिलै नाही ठाकि रहाईआ ॥३॥

Karami milai naahee thaaki rahaaeeaa ||3||

They are received only by Your Grace. No one can block them or stop their flow. ||3||

ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥

आखण वाला किआ वेचारा ॥

Aakha(nn) vaalaa kiaa vechaaraa ||

What can the poor helpless creatures do?

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

सिफती भरे तेरे भंडारा ॥

Siphatee bhare tere bhanddaaraa ||

Your Praises are overflowing with Your Treasures.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ॥

जिसु तू देहि तिसै किआ चारा ॥

Jisu too dehi tisai kiaa chaaraa ||

Those, unto whom You give-how can they think of any other?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक सचु सवारणहारा ॥४॥२॥

Naanak sachu savaara(nn)ahaaraa ||4||2||

O Nanak, the True One embellishes and exalts. ||4||2||

ਆਖਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

आखा जीवा विसरै मरि जाउ ॥

Aakhaa jeevaa visarai mari jaau ||

Chanting it, I live; forgetting it, I die.

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

आखणि अउखा साचा नाउ ॥

Aakha(nn)i aukhaa saachaa naau ||

It is so difficult to chant the True Name.

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੂਖ ॥

साचे नाम की लागै भूख ॥

Saache naam kee laagai bhookh ||

If someone feels hunger for the True Name,

ਉਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥

उतु भूखै खाइ चलीअहि दूख ॥१॥

Utu bhookhai khaai chaleeahi dookh ||1||

That hunger shall consume his pain. ||1||

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥

सो किउ विसरै मेरी माइ ॥

So kiu visarai meree maai ||

How can I forget Him, O my mother?

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साचा साहिबु साचै नाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saachaa saahibu saachai naai ||1|| rahaau ||

True is the Master, True is His Name. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

साचे नाम की तिलु वडिआई ॥

Saache naam kee tilu vadiaaee ||

Trying to describe even an iota of the Greatness of the True Name,

ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥

आखि थके कीमति नही पाई ॥

Aakhi thake keemati nahee paaee ||

People have grown weary, but they have not been able to evaluate it.

ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

जे सभि मिलि कै आखण पाहि ॥

Je sabhi mili kai aakha(nn) paahi ||

Even if everyone were to gather together and speak of Him,

ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

वडा न होवै घाटि न जाइ ॥२॥

Vadaa na hovai ghaati na jaai ||2||

He would not become any greater or any lesser. ||2||

ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

ना ओहु मरै न होवै सोगु ॥

Naa ohu marai na hovai sogu ||

That Lord does not die; there is no reason to mourn.

ਦੇਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਭੋਗੁ ॥

देदा रहै न चूकै भोगु ॥

Dedaa rahai na chookai bhogu ||

He continues to give, and His Provisions never run short.

ਗੁਣੁ ਏਹੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

गुणु एहो होरु नाही कोइ ॥

Gu(nn)u eho horu naahee koi ||

This Virtue is His alone; there is no other like Him.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥

ना को होआ ना को होइ ॥३॥

Naa ko hoaa naa ko hoi ||3||

There never has been, and there never will be. ||3||

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

जेवडु आपि तेवड तेरी दाति ॥

Jevadu aapi tevad teree daati ||

As Great as You Yourself are, O Lord, so Great are Your Gifts.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

जिनि दिनु करि कै कीती राति ॥

Jini dinu kari kai keetee raati ||

The One who created the day also created the night.

ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਮਜਾਤਿ ॥

खसमु विसारहि ते कमजाति ॥

Khasamu visaarahi te kamajaati ||

Those who forget their Lord and Master are vile and despicable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੩॥

नानक नावै बाझु सनाति ॥४॥३॥

Naanak naavai baajhu sanaati ||4||3||

O Nanak, without the Name, they are wretched outcasts. ||4||3||

ਤਿਤੁ ਸਰਵਰੜੈ ਭਈਲੇ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਕੀਆ ॥

तितु सरवरड़ै भईले निवासा पाणी पावकु तिनहि कीआ ॥

Titu saravara(rr)ai bhaeele nivaasaa paa(nn)ee paavaku tinahi keeaa ||

In that pool, people have made their homes, but the water there is as hot as fire!

ਪੰਕਜੁ ਮੋਹ ਪਗੁ ਨਹੀ ਚਾਲੈ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਡੂਬੀਅਲੇ ॥੧॥

पंकजु मोह पगु नही चालै हम देखा तह डूबीअले ॥१॥

Pankkaju moh pagu nahee chaalai ham dekhaa tah doobeeale ||1||

In the swamp of emotional attachment, their feet cannot move. I have seen them drowning there. ||1||

ਮਨ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਮੂੜ ਮਨਾ ॥

मन एकु न चेतसि मूड़ मना ॥

Man eku na chetasi moo(rr) manaa ||

In your mind, you do not remember the One Lord-you fool!

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि बिसरत तेरे गुण गलिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari bisarat tere gu(nn) galiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

You have forgotten the Lord; your virtues shall wither away. ||1|| Pause ||

ਨਾ ਹਉ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਨਹੀ ਪੜਿਆ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

ना हउ जती सती नही पड़िआ मूरख मुगधा जनमु भइआ ॥

Naa hau jatee satee nahee pa(rr)iaa moorakh mugadhaa janamu bhaiaa ||

I am not celibate, nor truthful, nor scholarly. I was born foolish and ignorant into this world.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ਜਿਨ ਤੂ ਨਾਹੀ ਵੀਸਰਿਆ ॥੨॥੩॥

प्रणवति नानक तिन की सरणा जिन तू नाही वीसरिआ ॥२॥३॥

Pr(nn)avati naanak tin kee sara(nn)aa jin too naahee veesariaa ||2||3||

Prays Nanak, I seek the Sanctuary of those who have not forgotten You, O Lord! ||2||3||

ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥

जै घरि कीरति आखीऐ करते का होइ बीचारो ॥

Jai ghari keerati aakheeai karate kaa hoi beechaaro ||

In that house where the Praises of the Creator are chanted and contemplated

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਸਿਵਰਿਹੁ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੋ ॥੧॥

तितु घरि गावहु सोहिला सिवरिहु सिरजणहारो ॥१॥

Titu ghari gaavahu sohilaa sivarihu siraja(nn)ahaaro ||1||

-in that house, sing Songs of Praise; meditate and remember the Creator Lord. ||1||

ਤੁਮ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਾ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ॥

तुम गावहु मेरे निरभउ का सोहिला ॥

Tum gaavahu mere nirabhau kaa sohilaa ||

Sing the Songs of Praise of my Fearless Lord.

ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੋਹਿਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ वारी जितु सोहिलै सदा सुखु होइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau vaaree jitu sohilai sadaa sukhu hoi ||1|| rahaau ||

I am a sacrifice to that Song of Praise which brings eternal peace. ||1|| Pause ||

ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਦੇਖੈਗਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

नित नित जीअड़े समालीअनि देखैगा देवणहारु ॥

Nit nit jeea(rr)e samaaleeani dekhaigaa deva(nn)ahaaru ||

Day after day, He cares for His beings; the Great Giver watches over all.

ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਨੈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਾਤੇ ਕਵਣੁ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

तेरे दानै कीमति ना पवै तिसु दाते कवणु सुमारु ॥२॥

Tere daanai keemati naa pavai tisu daate kava(nn)u sumaaru ||2||

Your Gifts cannot be appraised; how can anyone compare to the Giver? ||2||

ਸੰਬਤਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ॥

स्मबति साहा लिखिआ मिलि करि पावहु तेलु ॥

Sambbati saahaa likhiaa mili kari paavahu telu ||

The day of my wedding is pre-ordained. Come, gather together and pour the oil over the threshold.

ਦੇਹੁ ਸਜਣ ਅਸੀਸੜੀਆ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੩॥

देहु सजण असीसड़ीआ जिउ होवै साहिब सिउ मेलु ॥३॥

Dehu saja(nn) aseesa(rr)eeaa jiu hovai saahib siu melu ||3||

My friends, give me your blessings, that I may merge with my Lord and Master. ||3||

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਹੋ ਪਾਹੁਚਾ ਸਦੜੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਵੰਨਿ ॥

घरि घरि एहो पाहुचा सदड़े नित पवंनि ॥

Ghari ghari eho paahuchaa sada(rr)e nit pavanni ||

Unto each and every home, into each and every heart, this summons is sent out; the call comes each and every day.

ਸਦਣਹਾਰਾ ਸਿਮਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਦਿਹ ਆਵੰਨਿ ॥੪॥੧॥

सदणहारा सिमरीऐ नानक से दिह आवंनि ॥४॥१॥

Sada(nn)ahaaraa simareeai naanak se dih aavanni ||4||1||

Remember in meditation the One who summons us; O Nanak, that day is drawing near! ||4||1||

ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਛਿਅ ਘਰ ਛਿਅ ਗੁਰ ਛਿਅ ਉਪਦੇਸ ॥

छिअ घर छिअ गुर छिअ उपदेस ॥

Chhia ghar chhia gur chhia upades ||

There are six schools of philosophy, six teachers, and six sets of teachings.

ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਸ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥

गुरु गुरु एको वेस अनेक ॥१॥

Guru guru eko ves anek ||1||

But the Teacher of teachers is the One, who appears in so many forms. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਜੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

बाबा जै घरि करते कीरति होइ ॥

Baabaa jai ghari karate keerati hoi ||

O Baba: that system in which the Praises of the Creator are sung

ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਤੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सो घरु राखु वडाई तोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

So gharu raakhu vadaaee toi ||1|| rahaau ||

-follow that system; in it rests true greatness. ||1|| Pause ||

ਵਿਸੁਏ ਚਸਿਆ ਘੜੀਆ ਪਹਰਾ ਥਿਤੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਹੁ ਹੋਆ ॥

विसुए चसिआ घड़ीआ पहरा थिती वारी माहु होआ ॥

Visue chasiaa gha(rr)eeaa paharaa thitee vaaree maahu hoaa ||

The seconds, minutes and hours, days, weeks and months,

ਸੂਰਜੁ ਏਕੋ ਰੁਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

सूरजु एको रुति अनेक ॥

Sooraju eko ruti anek ||

And the various seasons originate from the one sun;

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਵੇਸ ॥੨॥੨॥

नानक करते के केते वेस ॥२॥२॥

Naanak karate ke kete ves ||2||2||

O Nanak, in just the same way, the many forms originate from the Creator. ||2||2||

ਰਾਗੁ ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

रागु धनासरी महला १ ॥

Raagu dhanaasaree mahalaa 1 ||

Raag Dhanaasree, First Mehl:

ਗਗਨ ਮੈ ਥਾਲੁ ਰਵਿ ਚੰਦੁ ਦੀਪਕ ਬਨੇ ਤਾਰਿਕਾ ਮੰਡਲ ਜਨਕ ਮੋਤੀ ॥

गगन मै थालु रवि चंदु दीपक बने तारिका मंडल जनक मोती ॥

Gagan mai thaalu ravi chanddu deepak bane taarikaa manddal janak motee ||

Upon that cosmic plate of the sky, the sun and the moon are the lamps. The stars and their orbs are the studded pearls.

ਧੂਪੁ ਮਲਆਨਲੋ ਪਵਣੁ ਚਵਰੋ ਕਰੇ ਸਗਲ ਬਨਰਾਇ ਫੂਲੰਤ ਜੋਤੀ ॥੧॥

धूपु मलआनलो पवणु चवरो करे सगल बनराइ फूलंत जोती ॥१॥

Dhoopu malaaanalo pava(nn)u chavaro kare sagal banaraai phoolantt jotee ||1||

The fragrance of sandalwood in the air is the temple incense, and the wind is the fan. All the plants of the world are the altar flowers in offering to You, O Luminous Lord. ||1||

ਕੈਸੀ ਆਰਤੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

कैसी आरती होइ ॥

Kaisee aaratee hoi ||

What a beautiful Aartee, lamp-lit worship service this is!

ਭਵ ਖੰਡਨਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਰਤੀ ॥

भव खंडना तेरी आरती ॥

Bhav khanddanaa teree aaratee ||

O Destroyer of Fear, this is Your Ceremony of Light.

ਅਨਹਤਾ ਸਬਦ ਵਾਜੰਤ ਭੇਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अनहता सबद वाजंत भेरी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anahataa sabad vaajantt bheree ||1|| rahaau ||

The Unstruck Sound-current of the Shabad is the vibration of the temple drums. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਹਸ ਤਵ ਨੈਨ ਨਨ ਨੈਨ ਹਹਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਕਉ ਸਹਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਨਾ ਏਕ ਤੋੁਹੀ ॥

सहस तव नैन नन नैन हहि तोहि कउ सहस मूरति नना एक तोही ॥

Sahas tav nain nan nain hahi tohi kau sahas moorati nanaa ek taohee ||

You have thousands of eyes, and yet You have no eyes. You have thousands of forms, and yet You do not have even one.

ਸਹਸ ਪਦ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਨ ਏਕ ਪਦ ਗੰਧ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਹਸ ਤਵ ਗੰਧ ਇਵ ਚਲਤ ਮੋਹੀ ॥੨॥

सहस पद बिमल नन एक पद गंध बिनु सहस तव गंध इव चलत मोही ॥२॥

Sahas pad bimal nan ek pad ganddh binu sahas tav ganddh iv chalat mohee ||2||

You have thousands of Lotus Feet, and yet You do not have even one foot. You have no nose, but you have thousands of noses. This Play of Yours entrances me. ||2||

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

सभ महि जोति जोति है सोइ ॥

Sabh mahi joti joti hai soi ||

Amongst all is the Light-You are that Light.

ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

तिस दै चानणि सभ महि चानणु होइ ॥

Tis dai chaana(nn)i sabh mahi chaana(nn)u hoi ||

By this Illumination, that Light is radiant within all.

ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुर साखी जोति परगटु होइ ॥

Gur saakhee joti paragatu hoi ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, the Light shines forth.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਆਰਤੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥

जो तिसु भावै सु आरती होइ ॥३॥

Jo tisu bhaavai su aaratee hoi ||3||

That which is pleasing to Him is the lamp-lit worship service. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਮਕਰੰਦ ਲੋਭਿਤ ਮਨੋ ਅਨਦਿਨੋੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਆਹੀ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥

हरि चरण कवल मकरंद लोभित मनो अनदिनो मोहि आही पिआसा ॥

Hari chara(nn) kaval makarandd lobhit mano anadinao mohi aahee piaasaa ||

My mind is enticed by the honey-sweet Lotus Feet of the Lord. Day and night, I thirst for them.

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਰਿੰਗ ਕਉ ਹੋਇ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਇ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੪॥੩॥

क्रिपा जलु देहि नानक सारिंग कउ होइ जा ते तेरै नाइ वासा ॥४॥३॥

Kripaa jalu dehi naanak saaringg kau hoi jaa te terai naai vaasaa ||4||3||

Bestow the Water of Your Mercy upon Nanak, the thirsty song-bird, so that he may come to dwell in Your Name. ||4||3||

मोती त मंदर ऊसरहि रतनी त होहि जड़ाउ ॥

Motee ta manddar usarahi ratanee ta hohi ja(rr)aau ||

If I had a palace made of pearls, inlaid with jewels,

ਕਸਤੂਰਿ ਕੁੰਗੂ ਅਗਰਿ ਚੰਦਨਿ ਲੀਪਿ ਆਵੈ ਚਾਉ ॥

कसतूरि कुंगू अगरि चंदनि लीपि आवै चाउ ॥

Kasatoori kunggoo agari chanddani leepi aavai chaau ||

Scented with musk, saffron and sandalwood, a sheer delight to behold

ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥

मतु देखि भूला वीसरै तेरा चिति न आवै नाउ ॥१॥

Matu dekhi bhoolaa veesarai teraa chiti na aavai naau ||1||

-seeing this, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

हरि बिनु जीउ जलि बलि जाउ ॥

Hari binu jeeu jali bali jaau ||

Without the Lord, my soul is scorched and burnt.

ਮੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਛਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मै आपणा गुरु पूछि देखिआ अवरु नाही थाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mai aapa(nn)aa guru poochhi dekhiaa avaru naahee thaau ||1|| rahaau ||

I consulted my Guru, and now I see that there is no other place at all. ||1|| Pause ||

ਧਰਤੀ ਤ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਤੀ ਪਲਘਿ ਲਾਲ ਜੜਾਉ ॥

धरती त हीरे लाल जड़ती पलघि लाल जड़ाउ ॥

Dharatee ta heere laal ja(rr)atee palaghi laal ja(rr)aau ||

If the floor of this palace was a mosaic of diamonds and rubies, and if my bed was encased with rubies,

ਮੋਹਣੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਣੀ ਸੋਹੈ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਪਸਾਉ ॥

मोहणी मुखि मणी सोहै करे रंगि पसाउ ॥

Moha(nn)ee mukhi ma(nn)ee sohai kare ranggi pasaau ||

And if heavenly beauties, their faces adorned with emeralds, tried to entice me with sensual gestures of love

ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥

मतु देखि भूला वीसरै तेरा चिति न आवै नाउ ॥२॥

Matu dekhi bhoolaa veesarai teraa chiti na aavai naau ||2||

-seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||2||

ਸਿਧੁ ਹੋਵਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਲਾਈ ਰਿਧਿ ਆਖਾ ਆਉ ॥

सिधु होवा सिधि लाई रिधि आखा आउ ॥

Sidhu hovaa sidhi laaee ridhi aakhaa aau ||

If I were to become a Siddha, and work miracles, summon wealth

ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਸਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਭਾਉ ॥

गुपतु परगटु होइ बैसा लोकु राखै भाउ ॥

Gupatu paragatu hoi baisaa loku raakhai bhaau ||

And become invisible and visible at will, so that people would hold me in awe

ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੩॥

मतु देखि भूला वीसरै तेरा चिति न आवै नाउ ॥३॥

Matu dekhi bhoolaa veesarai teraa chiti na aavai naau ||3||

-seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||3||

ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਹੋਵਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਸਕਰ ਤਖਤਿ ਰਾਖਾ ਪਾਉ ॥

सुलतानु होवा मेलि लसकर तखति राखा पाउ ॥

Sulataanu hovaa meli lasakar takhati raakhaa paau ||

If I were to become an emperor and raise a huge army, and sit on a throne,

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹਾਸਲੁ ਕਰੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਭ ਵਾਉ ॥

हुकमु हासलु करी बैठा नानका सभ वाउ ॥

Hukamu haasalu karee baithaa naanakaa sabh vaau ||

Issuing commands and collecting taxes-O Nanak, all of this could pass away like a puff of wind.

ਮਤੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਭੂਲਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੧॥

मतु देखि भूला वीसरै तेरा चिति न आवै नाउ ॥४॥१॥

Matu dekhi bhoolaa veesarai teraa chiti na aavai naau ||4||1||

Seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||4||1||

कोटि कोटी मेरी आरजा पवणु पीअणु अपिआउ ॥

Koti kotee meree aarajaa pava(nn)u peea(nn)u apiaau ||

If I could live for millions and millions of years, and if the air was my food and drink,

ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਗੁਫੈ ਨ ਦੇਖਾ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸਉਣ ਨ ਥਾਉ ॥

चंदु सूरजु दुइ गुफै न देखा सुपनै सउण न थाउ ॥

Chanddu sooraju dui guphai na dekhaa supanai sau(nn) na thaau ||

And if I lived in a cave and never saw either the sun or the moon, and if I never slept, even in dreams

ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥

भी तेरी कीमति ना पवै हउ केवडु आखा नाउ ॥१॥

Bhee teree keemati naa pavai hau kevadu aakhaa naau ||1||

-even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||1||

ਸਾਚਾ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਜ ਥਾਇ ॥

साचा निरंकारु निज थाइ ॥

Saachaa nirankkaaru nij thaai ||

The True Lord, the Formless One, is Himself in His Own Place.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਣਾ ਜੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਤਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सुणि सुणि आखणु आखणा जे भावै करे तमाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Su(nn)i su(nn)i aakha(nn)u aakha(nn)aa je bhaavai kare tamaai ||1|| rahaau ||

I have heard, over and over again, and so I tell the tale; as it pleases You, Lord, please instill within me the yearning for You. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕੁਸਾ ਕਟੀਆ ਵਾਰ ਵਾਰ ਪੀਸਣਿ ਪੀਸਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

कुसा कटीआ वार वार पीसणि पीसा पाइ ॥

Kusaa kateeaa vaar vaar peesa(nn)i peesaa paai ||

If I was slashed and cut into pieces, over and over again, and put into the mill and ground into flour,

ਅਗੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੀਆ ਭਸਮ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

अगी सेती जालीआ भसम सेती रलि जाउ ॥

Agee setee jaaleeaa bhasam setee rali jaau ||

Burnt by fire and mixed with ashes

ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥

भी तेरी कीमति ना पवै हउ केवडु आखा नाउ ॥२॥

Bhee teree keemati naa pavai hau kevadu aakhaa naau ||2||

-even then, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||2||

ਪੰਖੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜੇ ਭਵਾ ਸੈ ਅਸਮਾਨੀ ਜਾਉ ॥

पंखी होइ कै जे भवा सै असमानी जाउ ॥

Pankkhee hoi kai je bhavaa sai asamaanee jaau ||

If I was a bird, soaring and flying through hundreds of heavens,

ਨਦਰੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਵਊ ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੀਆ ਨ ਖਾਉ ॥

नदरी किसै न आवऊ ना किछु पीआ न खाउ ॥

Nadaree kisai na aavau naa kichhu peeaa na khaau ||

And if I was invisible, neither eating nor drinking anything

ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੩॥

भी तेरी कीमति ना पवै हउ केवडु आखा नाउ ॥३॥

Bhee teree keemati naa pavai hau kevadu aakhaa naau ||3||

-even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||3||

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਗਦ ਲਖ ਮਣਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਭਾਉ ॥

नानक कागद लख मणा पड़ि पड़ि कीचै भाउ ॥

Naanak kaagad lakh ma(nn)aa pa(rr)i pa(rr)i keechai bhaau ||

O Nanak, if I had hundreds of thousands of stacks of paper, and if I were to read and recite and embrace love for the Lord,

ਮਸੂ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਪਉਣੁ ਚਲਾਉ ॥

मसू तोटि न आवई लेखणि पउणु चलाउ ॥

Masoo toti na aavaee lekha(nn)i pau(nn)u chalaau ||

And if ink were never to fail me, and if my pen were able to move like the wind

ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੨॥

भी तेरी कीमति ना पवै हउ केवडु आखा नाउ ॥४॥२॥

Bhee teree keemati naa pavai hau kevadu aakhaa naau ||4||2||

-even so, I could not estimate Your Value. How can I describe the Greatness of Your Name? ||4||2||

Lekhai bola(nn)u bola(nn)aa lekhai khaa(nn)aa khaau ||

As it is pre-ordained, people speak their words. As it is pre-ordained, they consume their food.

ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਾਈਆ ਲੇਖੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਾਉ ॥

लेखै वाट चलाईआ लेखै सुणि वेखाउ ॥

Lekhai vaat chalaaeeaa lekhai su(nn)i vekhaau ||

As it is pre-ordained, they walk along the way. As it is pre-ordained, they see and hear.

ਲੇਖੈ ਸਾਹ ਲਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਪੜੇ ਕਿ ਪੁਛਣ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥

लेखै साह लवाईअहि पड़े कि पुछण जाउ ॥१॥

Lekhai saah lavaaeeahi pa(rr)e ki puchha(nn) jaau ||1||

As it is pre-ordained, they draw their breath. Why should I go and ask the scholars about this? ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚਨਾ ਧੋਹੁ ॥

बाबा माइआ रचना धोहु ॥

Baabaa maaiaa rachanaa dhohu ||

O Baba, the splendor of Maya is deceptive.

ਅੰਧੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹ ਨ ਓਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंधै नामु विसारिआ ना तिसु एह न ओहु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anddhai naamu visaariaa naa tisu eh na ohu ||1|| rahaau ||

The blind man has forgotten the Name; he is in limbo, neither here nor there. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜੀਵਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਏਥੈ ਖਾਜੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥

जीवण मरणा जाइ कै एथै खाजै कालि ॥

Jeeva(nn) mara(nn)aa jaai kai ethai khaajai kaali ||

Life and death come to all who are born. Everything here gets devoured by Death.

ਜਿਥੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

जिथै बहि समझाईऐ तिथै कोइ न चलिओ नालि ॥

Jithai bahi samajhaaeeai tithai koi na chalio naali ||

He sits and examines the accounts, there where no one goes along with anyone.

ਰੋਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਸਭਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

रोवण वाले जेतड़े सभि बंनहि पंड परालि ॥२॥

Rova(nn) vaale jeta(rr)e sabhi bannahi pandd paraali ||2||

Those who weep and wail might just as well all tie bundles of straw. ||2||

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਨ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

सभु को आखै बहुतु बहुतु घटि न आखै कोइ ॥

Sabhu ko aakhai bahutu bahutu ghati na aakhai koi ||

Everyone says that God is the Greatest of the Great. No one calls Him any less.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

कीमति किनै न पाईआ कहणि न वडा होइ ॥

Keemati kinai na paaeeaa kaha(nn)i na vadaa hoi ||

No one can estimate His Worth. By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਆ ਕੇਤੇ ਲੋਅ ॥੩॥

साचा साहबु एकु तू होरि जीआ केते लोअ ॥३॥

Saachaa saahabu eku too hori jeeaa kete loa ||3||

You are the One True Lord and Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds. ||3||

ਨੀਚਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਨੀਚੀ ਹੂ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਚੁ ॥

नीचा अंदरि नीच जाति नीची हू अति नीचु ॥

Neechaa anddari neech jaati neechee hoo ati neechu ||

Those who are lowest of the low class, the very lowest of the low;

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਵਡਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੀਸ ॥

नानकु तिन कै संगि साथि वडिआ सिउ किआ रीस ॥

Naanaku tin kai sanggi saathi vadiaa siu kiaa rees ||

Nanak seeks the company of those. Why should he try to compete with the great?

ਜਿਥੈ ਨੀਚ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥੪॥੩॥

जिथै नीच समालीअनि तिथै नदरि तेरी बखसीस ॥४॥३॥

Jithai neech samaaleeani tithai nadari teree bakhasees ||4||3||

In that place where the lowly are cared for-there, the Blessings of Your Glance of Grace rain down. ||4||3||

ਲਬੁ ਕੁਤਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਚੂਹੜਾ ਠਗਿ ਖਾਧਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥

लबु कुता कूड़ु चूहड़ा ठगि खाधा मुरदारु ॥

Labu kutaa koo(rr)u chooha(rr)aa thagi khaadhaa muradaaru ||

Greed is a dog; falsehood is a filthy street-sweeper. Cheating is eating a rotting carcass.

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਮੁਖ ਸੁਧੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ॥

पर निंदा पर मलु मुख सुधी अगनि क्रोधु चंडालु ॥

Par ninddaa par malu mukh sudhee agani krodhu chanddaalu ||

Slandering others is putting the filth of others into your own mouth. The fire of anger is the outcaste who burns dead bodies at the crematorium.

ਰਸ ਕਸ ਆਪੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਏ ਕਰਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥

रस कस आपु सलाहणा ए करम मेरे करतार ॥१॥

Ras kas aapu salaaha(nn)aa e karam mere karataar ||1||

I am caught in these tastes and flavors, and in self-conceited praise. These are my actions, O my Creator! ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

बाबा बोलीऐ पति होइ ॥

Baabaa boleeai pati hoi ||

O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor.

ਊਤਮ ਸੇ ਦਰਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ऊतम से दरि ऊतम कहीअहि नीच करम बहि रोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Utam se dari utam kaheeahi neech karam bahi roi ||1|| rahaau ||

They alone are good, who are judged good at the Lord's Door. Those with bad karma can only sit and weep. ||1|| Pause ||

ਰਸੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

रसु सुइना रसु रुपा कामणि रसु परमल की वासु ॥

Rasu suinaa rasu rupaa kaama(nn)i rasu paramal kee vaasu ||

The pleasures of gold and silver, the pleasures of women, the pleasure of the fragrance of sandalwood,

ਰਸੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਰਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥

रसु घोड़े रसु सेजा मंदर रसु मीठा रसु मासु ॥

Rasu gho(rr)e rasu sejaa manddar rasu meethaa rasu maasu ||

The pleasure of horses, the pleasure of a soft bed in a palace, the pleasure of sweet treats and the pleasure of hearty meals

ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਕੈ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੨॥

एते रस सरीर के कै घटि नाम निवासु ॥२॥

Ete ras sareer ke kai ghati naam nivaasu ||2||

-these pleasures of the human body are so numerous; how can the Naam, the Name of the Lord, find its dwelling in the heart? ||2||

ਜਿਤੁ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

जितु बोलिऐ पति पाईऐ सो बोलिआ परवाणु ॥

Jitu boliai pati paaeeai so boliaa paravaa(nn)u ||

Those words are acceptable, which, when spoken, bring honor.

ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਿ ਵਿਗੁਚਣਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਅਜਾਣ ॥

फिका बोलि विगुचणा सुणि मूरख मन अजाण ॥

Phikaa boli vigucha(nn)aa su(nn)i moorakh man ajaa(nn) ||

Harsh words bring only grief. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind!

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਿ ਕਹਣ ਵਖਾਣ ॥੩॥

जो तिसु भावहि से भले होरि कि कहण वखाण ॥३॥

Jo tisu bhaavahi se bhale hori ki kaha(nn) vakhaa(nn) ||3||

Those who are pleasing to Him are good. What else is there to be said? ||3||

ਤਿਨ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਪਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

तिन मति तिन पति तिन धनु पलै जिन हिरदै रहिआ समाइ ॥

Tin mati tin pati tin dhanu palai jin hiradai rahiaa samaai ||

Wisdom, honor and wealth are in the laps of those whose hearts remain permeated with the Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਅਵਰ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਕਾਇ ॥

तिन का किआ सालाहणा अवर सुआलिउ काइ ॥

Tin kaa kiaa saalaaha(nn)aa avar suaaliu kaai ||

What praise can be offered to them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them?

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਦਾਨਿ ਨ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੪॥

नानक नदरी बाहरे राचहि दानि न नाइ ॥४॥४॥

Naanak nadaree baahare raachahi daani na naai ||4||4||

O Nanak, those who lack the Lord's Glance of Grace cherish neither charity nor the Lord's Name. ||4||4||

ਅਮਲੁ ਗਲੋਲਾ ਕੂੜ ਕਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਿ ॥

अमलु गलोला कूड़ का दिता देवणहारि ॥

Amalu galolaa koo(rr) kaa ditaa deva(nn)ahaari ||

The Great Giver has given the intoxicating drug of falsehood.

ਮਤੀ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਖੁਸੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

मती मरणु विसारिआ खुसी कीती दिन चारि ॥

Matee mara(nn)u visaariaa khusee keetee din chaari ||

The people are intoxicated; they have forgotten death, and they have fun for a few days.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸੋਫੀਆ ਰਾਖਣ ਕਉ ਦਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

सचु मिलिआ तिन सोफीआ राखण कउ दरवारु ॥१॥

Sachu miliaa tin sopheeaa raakha(nn) kau daravaaru ||1||

Those who do not use intoxicants are true; they dwell in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

नानक साचे कउ सचु जाणु ॥

Naanak saache kau sachu jaa(nn)u ||

O Nanak, know the True Lord as True.

ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जितु सेविऐ सुखु पाईऐ तेरी दरगह चलै माणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jitu seviai sukhu paaeeai teree daragah chalai maa(nn)u ||1|| rahaau ||

Serving Him, peace is obtained; you shall go to His Court with honor. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਚੁ ਸਰਾ ਗੁੜ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

सचु सरा गुड़ बाहरा जिसु विचि सचा नाउ ॥

Sachu saraa gu(rr) baaharaa jisu vichi sachaa naau ||

The Wine of Truth is not fermented from molasses. The True Name is contained within it.

ਸੁਣਹਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

सुणहि वखाणहि जेतड़े हउ तिन बलिहारै जाउ ॥

Su(nn)ahi vakhaa(nn)ahi jeta(rr)e hau tin balihaarai jaau ||

I am a sacrifice to those who hear and chant the True Name.

ਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਖੀਵਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਮਹਲੀ ਪਾਏ ਥਾਉ ॥੨॥

ता मनु खीवा जाणीऐ जा महली पाए थाउ ॥२॥

Taa manu kheevaa jaa(nn)eeai jaa mahalee paae thaau ||2||

Only one who obtains a room in the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is deemed to be truly intoxicated. ||2||

ਨਾਉ ਨੀਰੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਸਤੁ ਪਰਮਲੁ ਤਨਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

नाउ नीरु चंगिआईआ सतु परमलु तनि वासु ॥

Naau neeru changgiaaeeaa satu paramalu tani vaasu ||

Bathe in the waters of Goodness and apply the scented oil of Truth to your body,

ਤਾ ਮੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਉਜਲਾ ਲਖ ਦਾਤੀ ਇਕ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

ता मुखु होवै उजला लख दाती इक दाति ॥

Taa mukhu hovai ujalaa lakh daatee ik daati ||

And your face shall become radiant. This is the gift of 100,000 gifts.

ਦੂਖ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਹਿ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਜਿਸੈ ਹੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥

दूख तिसै पहि आखीअहि सूख जिसै ही पासि ॥३॥

Dookh tisai pahi aakheeahi sookh jisai hee paasi ||3||

Tell your troubles to the One who is the Source of all comfort. ||3||

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣ ॥

सो किउ मनहु विसारीऐ जा के जीअ पराण ॥

So kiu manahu visaareeai jaa ke jeea paraa(nn) ||

How can you forget the One who created your soul, and the praanaa, the breath of life?

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਭੁ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਜੇਤਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖਾਣੁ ॥

तिसु विणु सभु अपवित्रु है जेता पैनणु खाणु ॥

Tisu vi(nn)u sabhu apavitru hai jetaa paina(nn)u khaa(nn)u ||

Without Him, all that we wear and eat is impure.

ਹੋਰਿ ਗਲਾਂ ਸਭਿ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੫॥

होरि गलां सभि कूड़ीआ तुधु भावै परवाणु ॥४॥५॥

Hori galaan sabhi koo(rr)eeaa tudhu bhaavai paravaa(nn)u ||4||5||

Everything else is false. Whatever pleases Your Will is acceptable. ||4||5||

जालि मोहु घसि मसु करि मति कागदु करि सारु ॥

Jaali mohu ghasi masu kari mati kaagadu kari saaru ||

Burn emotional attachment, and grind it into ink. Transform your intelligence into the purest of paper.

ਭਾਉ ਕਲਮ ਕਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਲਿਖੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

भाउ कलम करि चितु लेखारी गुर पुछि लिखु बीचारु ॥

Bhaau kalam kari chitu lekhaaree gur puchhi likhu beechaaru ||

Make the love of the Lord your pen, and let your consciousness be the scribe. Then, seek the Guru's Instructions, and record these deliberations.

ਲਿਖੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਲਿਖੁ ਲਿਖੁ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

लिखु नामु सालाह लिखु लिखु अंतु न पारावारु ॥१॥

Likhu naamu saalaah likhu likhu anttu na paaraavaaru ||1||

Write the Praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; write over and over again that He has no end or limitation. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਏਹੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

बाबा एहु लेखा लिखि जाणु ॥

Baabaa ehu lekhaa likhi jaa(nn)u ||

O Baba, write such an account,

ਜਿਥੈ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਹੋਇ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिथै लेखा मंगीऐ तिथै होइ सचा नीसाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jithai lekhaa manggeeai tithai hoi sachaa neesaa(nn)u ||1|| rahaau ||

That when it is asked for, it will bring the Mark of Truth. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜਿਥੈ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਸਦ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਸਦ ਚਾਉ ॥

जिथै मिलहि वडिआईआ सद खुसीआ सद चाउ ॥

Jithai milahi vadiaaeeaa sad khuseeaa sad chaau ||

There, where greatness, eternal peace and everlasting joy are bestowed,

ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

तिन मुखि टिके निकलहि जिन मनि सचा नाउ ॥

Tin mukhi tike nikalahi jin mani sachaa naau ||

The faces of those whose minds are attuned to the True Name are anointed with the Mark of Grace.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਗਲੀ ਵਾਉ ਦੁਆਉ ॥੨॥

करमि मिलै ता पाईऐ नाही गली वाउ दुआउ ॥२॥

Karami milai taa paaeeai naahee galee vaau duaau ||2||

If one receives God's Grace, then such honors are received, and not by mere words. ||2||

ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਉਠਿ ਰਖੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਵ ਸਲਾਰ ॥

इकि आवहि इकि जाहि उठि रखीअहि नाव सलार ॥

Iki aavahi iki jaahi uthi rakheeahi naav salaar ||

Some come, and some arise and depart. They give themselves lofty names.

ਇਕਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਮੰਗਤੇ ਇਕਨਾ ਵਡੇ ਦਰਵਾਰ ॥

इकि उपाए मंगते इकना वडे दरवार ॥

Iki upaae manggate ikanaa vade daravaar ||

Some are born beggars, and some hold vast courts.

ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥੩॥

अगै गइआ जाणीऐ विणु नावै वेकार ॥३॥

Agai gaiaa jaa(nn)eeai vi(nn)u naavai vekaar ||3||

Going to the world hereafter, everyone shall realize that without the Name, it is all useless. ||3||

ਭੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਡਰੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਛਿਜੈ ਦੇਹ ॥

भै तेरै डरु अगला खपि खपि छिजै देह ॥

Bhai terai daru agalaa khapi khapi chhijai deh ||

I am terrified by the Fear of You, God. Bothered and bewildered, my body is wasting away.

ਨਾਵ ਜਿਨਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਹੋਦੇ ਡਿਠੇ ਖੇਹ ॥

नाव जिना सुलतान खान होदे डिठे खेह ॥

Naav jinaa sulataan khaan hode dithe kheh ||

Those who are known as sultans and emperors shall be reduced to dust in the end.

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਠੀ ਚਲਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਕੂੜੇ ਤੁਟੇ ਨੇਹ ॥੪॥੬॥

नानक उठी चलिआ सभि कूड़े तुटे नेह ॥४॥६॥

Naanak uthee chaliaa sabhi koo(rr)e tute neh ||4||6||

O Nanak, arising and departing, all false attachments are cut away. ||4||6||

Sabhi ras mithe manniai su(nn)iai saalo(nn)e ||

Believing, all tastes are sweet. Hearing, the salty flavors are tasted;

ਖਟ ਤੁਰਸੀ ਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਮਾਰਣ ਨਾਦ ਕੀਏ ॥

खट तुरसी मुखि बोलणा मारण नाद कीए ॥

Khat turasee mukhi bola(nn)aa maara(nn) naad keee ||

Chanting with one's mouth, the spicy flavors are savored. All these spices have been made from the Sound-current of the Naad.

ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਾਉ ਏਕੁ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥

छतीह अम्रित भाउ एकु जा कउ नदरि करेइ ॥१॥

Chhateeh ammmrit bhaau eku jaa kau nadari karei ||1||

The thirty-six flavors of ambrosial nectar are in the Love of the One Lord; they are tasted only by one who is blessed by His Glance of Grace. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

बाबा होरु खाणा खुसी खुआरु ॥

Baabaa horu khaa(nn)aa khusee khuaaru ||

O Baba, the pleasures of other foods are false.

ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जितु खाधै तनु पीड़ीऐ मन महि चलहि विकार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jitu khaadhai tanu pee(rr)eeai man mahi chalahi vikaar ||1|| rahaau ||

Eating them, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1|| Pause ||

ਰਤਾ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਸੁਪੇਦੀ ਸਤੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

रता पैनणु मनु रता सुपेदी सतु दानु ॥

Rataa paina(nn)u manu rataa supedee satu daanu ||

My mind is imbued with the Lord's Love; it is dyed a deep crimson. Truth and charity are my white clothes.

ਨੀਲੀ ਸਿਆਹੀ ਕਦਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਪਹਿਰਣੁ ਪੈਰ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

नीली सिआही कदा करणी पहिरणु पैर धिआनु ॥

Neelee siaahee kadaa kara(nn)ee pahira(nn)u pair dhiaanu ||

The blackness of sin is erased by my wearing of blue clothes, and meditation on the Lord's Lotus Feet is my robe of honor.

ਕਮਰਬੰਦੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥

कमरबंदु संतोख का धनु जोबनु तेरा नामु ॥२॥

Kamarabanddu santtokh kaa dhanu jobanu teraa naamu ||2||

Contentment is my cummerbund, Your Name is my wealth and youth. ||2||

ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

बाबा होरु पैनणु खुसी खुआरु ॥

Baabaa horu paina(nn)u khusee khuaaru ||

O Baba, the pleasures of other clothes are false.

ਜਿਤੁ ਪੈਧੈ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जितु पैधै तनु पीड़ीऐ मन महि चलहि विकार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jitu paidhai tanu pee(rr)eeai man mahi chalahi vikaar ||1|| rahaau ||

Wearing them, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1|| Pause ||

ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰ ਸੁਇਨੇ ਸਾਖਤਿ ਬੂਝਣੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਾਟ ॥

घोड़े पाखर सुइने साखति बूझणु तेरी वाट ॥

Gho(rr)e paakhar suine saakhati boojha(nn)u teree vaat ||

The understanding of Your Way, Lord, is horses, saddles and bags of gold for me.

ਤਰਕਸ ਤੀਰ ਕਮਾਣ ਸਾਂਗ ਤੇਗਬੰਦ ਗੁਣ ਧਾਤੁ ॥

तरकस तीर कमाण सांग तेगबंद गुण धातु ॥

Tarakas teer kamaa(nn) saang tegabandd gu(nn) dhaatu ||

The pursuit of virtue is my bow and arrow, my quiver, sword and scabbard.

ਵਾਜਾ ਨੇਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥੩॥

वाजा नेजा पति सिउ परगटु करमु तेरा मेरी जाति ॥३॥

Vaajaa nejaa pati siu paragatu karamu teraa meree jaati ||3||

To be distinguished with honor is my drum and banner. Your Mercy is my social status. ||3||

ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਚੜਣਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

बाबा होरु चड़णा खुसी खुआरु ॥

Baabaa horu cha(rr)a(nn)aa khusee khuaaru ||

O Baba, the pleasures of other rides are false.

ਜਿਤੁ ਚੜਿਐ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जितु चड़िऐ तनु पीड़ीऐ मन महि चलहि विकार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jitu cha(rr)iai tanu pee(rr)eeai man mahi chalahi vikaar ||1|| rahaau ||

By such rides, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1|| Pause ||

ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਖੁਸੀ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥

घर मंदर खुसी नाम की नदरि तेरी परवारु ॥

Ghar manddar khusee naam kee nadari teree paravaaru ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the pleasure of houses and mansions. Your Glance of Grace is my family, Lord.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਹੋਰੁ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

हुकमु सोई तुधु भावसी होरु आखणु बहुतु अपारु ॥

Hukamu soee tudhu bhaavasee horu aakha(nn)u bahutu apaaru ||

The Hukam of Your Command is the pleasure of Your Will, Lord. To say anything else is far beyond anyone's reach.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਪੂਛਿ ਨ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

नानक सचा पातिसाहु पूछि न करे बीचारु ॥४॥

Naanak sachaa paatisaahu poochhi na kare beechaaru ||4||

O Nanak, the True King does not seek advice from anyone else in His decisions. ||4||

ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਉਣਾ ਖੁਸੀ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

बाबा होरु सउणा खुसी खुआरु ॥

Baabaa horu sau(nn)aa khusee khuaaru ||

O Baba, the pleasure of other sleep is false.

ਜਿਤੁ ਸੁਤੈ ਤਨੁ ਪੀੜੀਐ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੪॥੭॥

जितु सुतै तनु पीड़ीऐ मन महि चलहि विकार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥४॥७॥

Jitu sutai tanu pee(rr)eeai man mahi chalahi vikaar ||1|| rahaau ||4||7||

By such sleep, the body is ruined, and wickedness and corruption enter into the mind. ||1|| Pause ||4||7||

कुंगू की कांइआ रतना की ललिता अगरि वासु तनि सासु ॥

Kunggoo kee kaaniaa ratanaa kee lalitaa agari vaasu tani saasu ||

With the body of saffron, and the tongue a jewel, and the breath of the body pure fragrant incense;

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਕਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਟਿਕਾ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਮਤਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੁ ॥

अठसठि तीरथ का मुखि टिका तितु घटि मति विगासु ॥

Athasathi teerath kaa mukhi tikaa titu ghati mati vigaasu ||

With the face anointed at the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage, and the heart illuminated with wisdom

ਓਤੁ ਮਤੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

ओतु मती सालाहणा सचु नामु गुणतासु ॥१॥

ਬਾਬਾ ਹੋਰ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ॥

बाबा होर मति होर होर ॥

Baabaa hor mati hor hor ||

O Baba, other wisdom is useless and irrelevant.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵੇਰ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜਾ ਜੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जे सउ वेर कमाईऐ कूड़ै कूड़ा जोरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Je sau ver kamaaeeai koo(rr)ai koo(rr)aa joru ||1|| rahaau ||

If falsehood is practiced a hundred times, it is still false in its effects. ||1|| Pause ||

ਪੂਜ ਲਗੈ ਪੀਰੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

पूज लगै पीरु आखीऐ सभु मिलै संसारु ॥

Pooj lagai peeru aakheeai sabhu milai sanssaaru ||

You may be worshipped and adored as a Pir (a spiritual teacher); you may be welcomed by all the world;

ਨਾਉ ਸਦਾਏ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਿਧੁ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥

नाउ सदाए आपणा होवै सिधु सुमारु ॥

Naau sadaae aapa(nn)aa hovai sidhu sumaaru ||

You may adopt a lofty name, and be known to have supernatural spiritual powers

ਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਸਭਾ ਪੂਜ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥

जा पति लेखै ना पवै सभा पूज खुआरु ॥२॥

Jaa pati lekhai naa pavai sabhaa pooj khuaaru ||2||

-even so, if you are not accepted in the Court of the Lord, then all this adoration is false. ||2||

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਥਾਪਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

जिन कउ सतिगुरि थापिआ तिन मेटि न सकै कोइ ॥

Jin kau satiguri thaapiaa tin meti na sakai koi ||

No one can overthrow those who have been established by the True Guru.

ਓਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ओना अंदरि नामु निधानु है नामो परगटु होइ ॥

Onaa anddari naamu nidhaanu hai naamo paragatu hoi ||

The Treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them, and through the Naam, they are radiant and famous.

ਨਾਉ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਅਖੰਡੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

नाउ पूजीऐ नाउ मंनीऐ अखंडु सदा सचु सोइ ॥३॥

Naau poojeeai naau manneeai akhanddu sadaa sachu soi ||3||

They worship the Naam, and they believe in the Naam. The True One is forever Intact and Unbroken. ||3||

ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਤਾ ਜੀਉ ਕੇਹਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

खेहू खेह रलाईऐ ता जीउ केहा होइ ॥

Khehoo kheh ralaaeeai taa jeeu kehaa hoi ||

When the body mingles with dust, what happens to the soul?

ਜਲੀਆ ਸਭਿ ਸਿਆਣਪਾ ਉਠੀ ਚਲਿਆ ਰੋਇ ॥

जलीआ सभि सिआणपा उठी चलिआ रोइ ॥

Jaleeaa sabhi siaa(nn)apaa uthee chaliaa roi ||

All clever tricks are burnt away, and you shall depart crying.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਦਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੮॥

नानक नामि विसारिऐ दरि गइआ किआ होइ ॥४॥८॥

Naanak naami visaariai dari gaiaa kiaa hoi ||4||8||

O Nanak, those who forget the Naam-what will happen when they go to the Court of the Lord? ||4||8||

ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਵੀਥਰੈ ਅਉਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਝੂਰਿ ॥

गुणवंती गुण वीथरै अउगुणवंती झूरि ॥

Gu(nn)avanttee gu(nn) veetharai augu(nn)avanttee jhoori ||

The virtuous wife exudes virtue; the unvirtuous suffer in misery.

ਜੇ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਵਰੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਨਹ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਪਿਰ ਕੂਰਿ ॥

जे लोड़हि वरु कामणी नह मिलीऐ पिर कूरि ॥

Je lo(rr)ahi varu kaama(nn)ee nah mileeai pir koori ||

If you long for your Husband Lord, O soul-bride, you must know that He is not met by falsehood.

ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਿਰੁ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥

ना बेड़ी ना तुलहड़ा ना पाईऐ पिरु दूरि ॥१॥

Naa be(rr)ee naa tulaha(rr)aa naa paaeeai piru doori ||1||

No boat or raft can take you to Him. Your Husband Lord is far away. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਅਡੋਲੁ ॥

मेरे ठाकुर पूरै तखति अडोलु ॥

Mere thaakur poorai takhati adolu ||

My Lord and Master is Perfect; His Throne is Eternal and Immovable.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਤੋਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि पूरा जे करे पाईऐ साचु अतोलु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi pooraa je kare paaeeai saachu atolu ||1|| rahaau ||

One who attains perfection as Gurmukh, obtains the Immeasurable True Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰੁ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਣਕ ਲਾਲ ॥

प्रभु हरिमंदरु सोहणा तिसु महि माणक लाल ॥

Prbhu harimanddaru soha(nn)aa tisu mahi maa(nn)ak laal ||

The Palace of the Lord God is beautiful. Within it are flawless diamonds,

ਮੋਤੀ ਹੀਰਾ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟ ਰੀਸਾਲ ॥

मोती हीरा निरमला कंचन कोट रीसाल ॥

Motee heeraa niramalaa kancchan kot reesaal ||

gems, rubies and pearls. A fortress of gold surrounds this Source of Nectar.

ਬਿਨੁ ਪਉੜੀ ਗੜਿ ਕਿਉ ਚੜਉ ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਨ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੨॥

बिनु पउड़ी गड़ि किउ चड़उ गुर हरि धिआन निहाल ॥२॥

Binu pau(rr)ee ga(rr)i kiu cha(rr)au gur hari dhiaan nihaal ||2||

How can I climb up to the Fortress without a ladder? By meditating on the Lord, through the Guru, I am blessed and exalted. ||2||

ਗੁਰੁ ਪਉੜੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥

गुरु पउड़ी बेड़ी गुरू गुरु तुलहा हरि नाउ ॥

Guru pau(rr)ee be(rr)ee guroo guru tulahaa hari naau ||

The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਦਰੀਆਉ ॥

गुरु सरु सागरु बोहिथो गुरु तीरथु दरीआउ ॥

Guru saru saagaru bohitho guru teerathu dareeaau ||

The Guru is the Boat to carry me across the world-ocean; the Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Holy River.

ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਊਜਲੀ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਣ ਜਾਉ ॥੩॥

जे तिसु भावै ऊजली सत सरि नावण जाउ ॥३॥

Je tisu bhaavai ujalee sat sari naava(nn) jaau ||3||

If it pleases Him, I bathe in the Pool of Truth, and become radiant and pure. ||3||

ਪੂਰੋ ਪੂਰੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥

पूरो पूरो आखीऐ पूरै तखति निवास ॥

Pooro pooro aakheeai poorai takhati nivaas ||

He is called the Most Perfect of the Perfect. He sits upon His Perfect Throne.

ਪੂਰੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ॥

पूरै थानि सुहावणै पूरै आस निरास ॥

Poorai thaani suhaava(nn)ai poorai aas niraas ||

He looks so Beautiful in His Perfect Place. He fulfills the hopes of the hopeless.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਉ ਘਾਟੈ ਗੁਣ ਤਾਸ ॥੪॥੯॥

नानक पूरा जे मिलै किउ घाटै गुण तास ॥४॥९॥

Naanak pooraa je milai kiu ghaatai gu(nn) taas ||4||9||

O Nanak, if one obtains the Perfect Lord, how can his virtues decrease? ||4||9||

Aavahu bhai(nn)e gali milah ankki sahela(rr)eeaah ||

Come, my dear sisters and spiritual companions; hug me close in your embrace.

ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਹ ਕਹਾਣੀਆ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਕੰਤ ਕੀਆਹ ॥

मिलि कै करह कहाणीआ सम्रथ कंत कीआह ॥

Mili kai karah kahaa(nn)eeaa sammrth kantt keeaah ||

Let's join together, and tell stories of our All-powerful Husband Lord.

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣ ਅਉਗਣ ਸਭਿ ਅਸਾਹ ॥੧॥

साचे साहिब सभि गुण अउगण सभि असाह ॥१॥

Saache saahib sabhi gu(nn) auga(nn) sabhi asaah ||1||

All Virtues are in our True Lord and Master; we are utterly without virtue. ||1||

ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰੈ ਜੋਰਿ ॥

करता सभु को तेरै जोरि ॥

Karataa sabhu ko terai jori ||

O Creator Lord, all are in Your Power.

ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਜਾ ਤੂ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एकु सबदु बीचारीऐ जा तू ता किआ होरि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Eku sabadu beechaareeai jaa too taa kiaa hori ||1|| rahaau ||

I dwell upon the One Word of the Shabad. You are mine-what else do I need? ||1|| Pause ||

ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤੁਸੀ ਰਾਵਿਆ ਕਿਨੀ ਗੁਣੀਂ ॥

जाइ पुछहु सोहागणी तुसी राविआ किनी गुणीं ॥

Jaai puchhahu sohaaga(nn)ee tusee raaviaa kinee gu(nn)een ||

Go, and ask the happy soul-brides, ""By what virtuous qualities do you enjoy your Husband Lord?""

ਸਹਜਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਣੀ ॥

सहजि संतोखि सीगारीआ मिठा बोलणी ॥

Sahaji santtokhi seegaareeaa mithaa bola(nn)ee ||

"We are adorned with intuitive ease, contentment and sweet words.

ਪਿਰੁ ਰੀਸਾਲੂ ਤਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣੀ ॥੨॥

पिरु रीसालू ता मिलै जा गुर का सबदु सुणी ॥२॥

Piru reesaaloo taa milai jaa gur kaa sabadu su(nn)ee ||2||

We meet with our Beloved, the Source of Joy, when we listen to the Word of the Guru's Shabad." ||2||

ਕੇਤੀਆ ਤੇਰੀਆ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਕੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

केतीआ तेरीआ कुदरती केवड तेरी दाति ॥

Keteeaa tereeaa kudaratee kevad teree daati ||

You have so many Creative Powers, Lord; Your Bountiful Blessings are so Great.

ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

केते तेरे जीअ जंत सिफति करहि दिनु राति ॥

Kete tere jeea jantt siphati karahi dinu raati ||

So many of Your beings and creatures praise You day and night.

ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਾਤਿ ਅਜਾਤਿ ॥੩॥

केते तेरे रूप रंग केते जाति अजाति ॥३॥

Kete tere roop rangg kete jaati ajaati ||3||

You have so many forms and colors, so many classes, high and low. ||3||

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

सचु मिलै सचु ऊपजै सच महि साचि समाइ ॥

Sachu milai sachu upajai sach mahi saachi samaai ||

Meeting the True One, Truth wells up. The truthful are absorbed into the True Lord.

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਊਗਵੈ ਗੁਰਬਚਨੀ ਭਉ ਖਾਇ ॥

सुरति होवै पति ऊगवै गुरबचनी भउ खाइ ॥

Surati hovai pati ugavai gurabachanee bhau khaai ||

Intuitive understanding is obtained and one is welcomed with honor, through the Guru's Word, filled with the Fear of God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥

नानक सचा पातिसाहु आपे लए मिलाइ ॥४॥१०॥

Naanak sachaa paatisaahu aape lae milaai ||4||10||

O Nanak, the True King absorbs us into Himself. ||4||10||

Bhalee saree ji ubaree haumai muee gharaahu ||

It all worked out-I was saved, and the egotism within my heart was subdued.

ਦੂਤ ਲਗੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥

दूत लगे फिरि चाकरी सतिगुर का वेसाहु ॥

Doot lage phiri chaakaree satigur kaa vesaahu ||

The evil energies have been made to serve me, since I placed my faith in the True Guru.

ਕਲਪ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ॥੧॥

कलप तिआगी बादि है सचा वेपरवाहु ॥१॥

Kalap tiaagee baadi hai sachaa veparavaahu ||1||

I have renounced my useless schemes, by the Grace of the True, Carefree Lord. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥

मन रे सचु मिलै भउ जाइ ॥

Man re sachu milai bhau jaai ||

O mind, meeting with the True One, fear departs.

ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਿਉ ਥੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

भै बिनु निरभउ किउ थीऐ गुरमुखि सबदि समाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Bhai binu nirabhau kiu theeai guramukhi sabadi samaai ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Fear of God, how can anyone become fearless? Become Gurmukh, and immerse yourself in the Shabad. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕੇਤਾ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਖਣਿ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

केता आखणु आखीऐ आखणि तोटि न होइ ॥

Ketaa aakha(nn)u aakheeai aakha(nn)i toti na hoi ||

How can we describe Him with words? There is no end to the descriptions of Him.

ਮੰਗਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥

मंगण वाले केतड़े दाता एको सोइ ॥

Mangga(nn) vaale keta(rr)e daataa eko soi ||

There are so many beggars, but He is the only Giver.

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣ ਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

जिस के जीअ पराण है मनि वसिऐ सुखु होइ ॥२॥

Jis ke jeea paraa(nn) hai mani vasiai sukhu hoi ||2||

He is the Giver of the soul, and the praanaa, the breath of life; when He dwells within the mind, there is peace. ||2||

ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਬਾਜੀ ਬਨੀ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਖੇਲਾਇ ॥

जगु सुपना बाजी बनी खिन महि खेलु खेलाइ ॥

Jagu supanaa baajee banee khin mahi khelu khelaai ||

The world is a drama, staged in a dream. In a moment, the play is played out.

ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕਸੇ ਵਿਜੋਗੀ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

संजोगी मिलि एकसे विजोगी उठि जाइ ॥

Sanjjogee mili ekase vijogee uthi jaai ||

Some attain union with the Lord, while others depart in separation.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

जो तिसु भाणा सो थीऐ अवरु न करणा जाइ ॥३॥

Jo tisu bhaa(nn)aa so theeai avaru na kara(nn)aa jaai ||3||

Whatever pleases Him comes to pass; nothing else can be done. ||3||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਵੇਸਾਹੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

गुरमुखि वसतु वेसाहीऐ सचु वखरु सचु रासि ॥

Guramukhi vasatu vesaaheeai sachu vakharu sachu raasi ||

The Gurmukhs purchase the Genuine Article. The True Merchandise is purchased with the True Capital.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥

जिनी सचु वणंजिआ गुर पूरे साबासि ॥

Jinee sachu va(nn)anjjiaa gur poore saabaasi ||

Those who purchase this True Merchandise through the Perfect Guru are blessed.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

नानक वसतु पछाणसी सचु सउदा जिसु पासि ॥४॥११॥

Naanak vasatu pachhaa(nn)asee sachu saudaa jisu paasi ||4||11||

O Nanak, one who stocks this True Merchandise shall recognize and realize the Genuine Article. ||4||11||

धातु मिलै फुनि धातु कउ सिफती सिफति समाइ ॥

Dhaatu milai phuni dhaatu kau siphatee siphati samaai ||

As metal merges with metal, those who chant the Praises of the Lord are absorbed into the Praiseworthy Lord.

ਲਾਲੁ ਗੁਲਾਲੁ ਗਹਬਰਾ ਸਚਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਉ ॥

लालु गुलालु गहबरा सचा रंगु चड़ाउ ॥

Laalu gulaalu gahabaraa sachaa ranggu cha(rr)aau ||

Like the poppies, they are dyed in the deep crimson color of Truthfulness.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਏਕੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥

सचु मिलै संतोखीआ हरि जपि एकै भाइ ॥१॥

Sachu milai santtokheeaa hari japi ekai bhaai ||1||

Those contented souls who meditate on the Lord with single-minded love, meet the True Lord. ||1||

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ॥

भाई रे संत जना की रेणु ॥

Bhaaee re santt janaa kee re(nn)u ||

O Siblings of Destiny, become the dust of the feet of the humble Saints.

ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਧੇਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

संत सभा गुरु पाईऐ मुकति पदारथु धेणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

In the Society of the Saints, the Guru is found. He is the Treasure of Liberation, the Source of all good fortune. ||1|| Pause ||

ਊਚਉ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥

ऊचउ थानु सुहावणा ऊपरि महलु मुरारि ॥

Uchau thaanu suhaava(nn)aa upari mahalu muraari ||

Upon that Highest Plane of Sublime Beauty, stands the Mansion of the Lord.

ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

सचु करणी दे पाईऐ दरु घरु महलु पिआरि ॥

Sachu kara(nn)ee de paaeeai daru gharu mahalu piaari ||

By true actions, this human body is obtained, and the door within ourselves which leads to the Mansion of the Beloved, is found.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

गुरमुखि मनु समझाईऐ आतम रामु बीचारि ॥२॥

Guramukhi manu samajhaaeeai aatam raamu beechaari ||2||

The Gurmukhs train their minds to contemplate the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||2||

ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈਅਹਿ ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

त्रिबिधि करम कमाईअहि आस अंदेसा होइ ॥

Tribidhi karam kamaaeeahi aas anddesaa hoi ||

By actions committed under the influence of the three qualities, hope and anxiety are produced.

ਕਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

किउ गुर बिनु त्रिकुटी छुटसी सहजि मिलिऐ सुखु होइ ॥

Kiu gur binu trikutee chhutasee sahaji miliai sukhu hoi ||

Without the Guru, how can anyone be released from these three qualities? Through intuitive wisdom, we meet with Him and find peace.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਇ ॥੩॥

निज घरि महलु पछाणीऐ नदरि करे मलु धोइ ॥३॥

Nij ghari mahalu pachhaa(nn)eeai nadari kare malu dhoi ||3||

Within the home of the self, the Mansion of His Presence is realized when He bestows His Glance of Grace and washes away our pollution. ||3||

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਉ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

बिनु गुर मैलु न उतरै बिनु हरि किउ घर वासु ॥

Binu gur mailu na utarai binu hari kiu ghar vaasu ||

Without the Guru, this pollution is not removed. Without the Lord, how can there be any homecoming?

ਏਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਆਸ ॥

एको सबदु वीचारीऐ अवर तिआगै आस ॥

Eko sabadu veechaareeai avar tiaagai aas ||

Contemplate the One Word of the Shabad, and abandon other hopes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਈਐ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਸੁ ॥੪॥੧੨॥

नानक देखि दिखाईऐ हउ सद बलिहारै जासु ॥४॥१२॥

Naanak dekhi dikhaaeeai hau sad balihaarai jaasu ||4||12||

O Nanak, I am forever a sacrifice to the one who beholds, and inspires others to behold Him. ||4||12||

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਮੁਠੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

ध्रिगु जीवणु दोहागणी मुठी दूजै भाइ ॥

Dhrigu jeeva(nn)u dohaaga(nn)ee muthee doojai bhaai ||

The life of the discarded bride is cursed. She is deceived by the love of duality.

ਕਲਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਕੰਧ ਜਿਉ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਿਰਿ ਢਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

कलर केरी कंध जिउ अहिनिसि किरि ढहि पाइ ॥

Kalar keree kanddh jiu ahinisi kiri dhahi paai ||

Like a wall of sand, day and night, she crumbles, and eventually, she breaks down altogether.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

बिनु सबदै सुखु ना थीऐ पिर बिनु दूखु न जाइ ॥१॥

Binu sabadai sukhu naa theeai pir binu dookhu na jaai ||1||

Without the Word of the Shabad, peace does not come. Without her Husband Lord, her suffering does not end. ||1||

ਮੁੰਧੇ ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

मुंधे पिर बिनु किआ सीगारु ॥

Munddhe pir binu kiaa seegaaru ||

O soul-bride, without your Husband Lord, what good are your decorations?

ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

दरि घरि ढोई न लहै दरगह झूठु खुआरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dari ghari dhoee na lahai daragah jhoothu khuaaru ||1|| rahaau ||

In this world, you shall not find any shelter; in the world hereafter, being false, you shall suffer. ||1|| Pause ||

ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਭੁਲਈ ਸਚਾ ਵਡ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ॥

आपि सुजाणु न भुलई सचा वड किरसाणु ॥

Aapi sujaa(nn)u na bhulaee sachaa vad kirasaa(nn)u ||

The True Lord Himself knows all; He makes no mistakes. He is the Great Farmer of the Universe.

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਦਾਣੁ ॥

पहिला धरती साधि कै सचु नामु दे दाणु ॥

Pahilaa dharatee saadhi kai sachu naamu de daa(nn)u ||

First, He prepares the ground, and then He plants the Seed of the True Name.

ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

नउ निधि उपजै नामु एकु करमि पवै नीसाणु ॥२॥

Nau nidhi upajai naamu eku karami pavai neesaa(nn)u ||2||

The nine treasures are produced from Name of the One Lord. By His Grace, we obtain His Banner and Insignia. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਜਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਜੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥

गुर कउ जाणि न जाणई किआ तिसु चजु अचारु ॥

Gur kau jaa(nn)i na jaa(nn)aee kiaa tisu chaju achaaru ||

Some are very knowledgeable, but if they do not know the Guru, then what is the use of their lives?

ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

अंधुलै नामु विसारिआ मनमुखि अंध गुबारु ॥

Anddhulai naamu visaariaa manamukhi anddh gubaaru ||

The blind have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The self-willed manmukhs are in utter darkness.

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੩॥

आवणु जाणु न चुकई मरि जनमै होइ खुआरु ॥३॥

Aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u na chukaee mari janamai hoi khuaaru ||3||

Their comings and goings in reincarnation do not end; through death and rebirth, they are wasting away. ||3||

ਚੰਦਨੁ ਮੋਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਕੁੰਗੂ ਮਾਂਗ ਸੰਧੂਰੁ ॥

चंदनु मोलि अणाइआ कुंगू मांग संधूरु ॥

Chanddanu moli a(nn)aaiaa kunggoo maang sanddhooru ||

The bride may buy sandalwood oil and perfumes, and apply them in great quantities to her hair;

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਘਣਾ ਪਾਨਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਪੂਰੁ ॥

चोआ चंदनु बहु घणा पाना नालि कपूरु ॥

Choaa chanddanu bahu gha(nn)aa paanaa naali kapooru ||

She may sweeten her breath with betel leaf and camphor,

ਜੇ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤ ਸਭਿ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਕੂੜੁ ॥੪॥

जे धन कंति न भावई त सभि अड्मबर कूड़ु ॥४॥

Je dhan kantti na bhaavaee ta sabhi adambbar koo(rr)u ||4||

But if this bride is not pleasing to her Husband Lord, then all these trappings are false. ||4||

ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਬਾਦਿ ਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

सभि रस भोगण बादि हहि सभि सीगार विकार ॥

Sabhi ras bhoga(nn) baadi hahi sabhi seegaar vikaar ||

Her enjoyment of all pleasures is futile, and all her decorations are corrupt.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੇਦੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿ ॥

जब लगु सबदि न भेदीऐ किउ सोहै गुरदुआरि ॥

Jab lagu sabadi na bhedeeai kiu sohai guraduaari ||

Until she has been pierced through with the Shabad, how can she look beautiful at Guru's Gate?

ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੫॥੧੩॥

नानक धंनु सुहागणी जिन सह नालि पिआरु ॥५॥१३॥

Naanak dhannu suhaaga(nn)ee jin sah naali piaaru ||5||13||

O Nanak, blessed is that fortunate bride, who is in love with her Husband Lord. ||5||13||

ਸੁੰਞੀ ਦੇਹ ਡਰਾਵਣੀ ਜਾ ਜੀਉ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

सुंञी देह डरावणी जा जीउ विचहु जाइ ॥

Sun(ny)ee deh daraava(nn)ee jaa jeeu vichahu jaai ||

The empty body is dreadful, when the soul goes out from within.

ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਦੀ ਵਿਝਵੀ ਧੂਉ ਨ ਨਿਕਸਿਓ ਕਾਇ ॥

भाहि बलंदी विझवी धूउ न निकसिओ काइ ॥

Bhaahi balanddee vijhavee dhoou na nikasio kaai ||

The burning fire of life is extinguished, and the smoke of the breath no longer emerges.

ਪੰਚੇ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਭਰੇ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥

पंचे रुंने दुखि भरे बिनसे दूजै भाइ ॥१॥

Pancche runne dukhi bhare binase doojai bhaai ||1||

The five relatives (the senses) weep and wail painfully, and waste away through the love of duality. ||1||

ਮੂੜੇ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ॥

मूड़े रामु जपहु गुण सारि ॥

Moo(rr)e raamu japahu gu(nn) saari ||

You fool: chant the Name of the Lord, and preserve your virtue.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਸਭ ਮੁਠੀ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउमै ममता मोहणी सभ मुठी अहंकारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Haumai mamataa moha(nn)ee sabh muthee ahankkaari ||1|| rahaau ||

Egotism and possessiveness are very enticing; egotistical pride has plundered everyone. ||1|| Pause ||

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਗਿ ॥

जिनी नामु विसारिआ दूजी कारै लगि ॥

Jinee naamu visaariaa doojee kaarai lagi ||

Those who have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord, are attached to affairs of duality.

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਲਾਗੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਿ ॥

दुबिधा लागे पचि मुए अंतरि त्रिसना अगि ॥

Dubidhaa laage pachi mue anttari trisanaa agi ||

Attached to duality, they putrefy and die; they are filled with the fire of desire within.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਠਗਿ ॥੨॥

गुरि राखे से उबरे होरि मुठी धंधै ठगि ॥२॥

Guri raakhe se ubare hori muthee dhanddhai thagi ||2||

Those who are protected by the Guru are saved; all others are cheated and plundered by deceitful worldly affairs. ||2||

ਮੁਈ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਗਇਆ ਮੁਆ ਵੈਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਧੁ ॥

मुई परीति पिआरु गइआ मुआ वैरु विरोधु ॥

Muee pareeti piaaru gaiaa muaa vairu virodhu ||

Love dies, and affection vanishes. Hatred and alienation die.

ਧੰਧਾ ਥਕਾ ਹਉ ਮੁਈ ਮਮਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ॥

धंधा थका हउ मुई ममता माइआ क्रोधु ॥

Dhanddhaa thakaa hau muee mamataa maaiaa krodhu ||

Entanglements end, and egotism dies, along with attachment to Maya, possessiveness and anger.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰੋਧੁ ॥੩॥

करमि मिलै सचु पाईऐ गुरमुखि सदा निरोधु ॥३॥

Karami milai sachu paaeeai guramukhi sadaa nirodhu ||3||

Those who receive His Mercy obtain the True One. The Gurmukhs dwell forever in balanced restraint. ||3||

ਸਚੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

सची कारै सचु मिलै गुरमति पलै पाइ ॥

Sachee kaarai sachu milai guramati palai paai ||

By true actions, the True Lord is met, and the Guru's Teachings are found.

ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਾ ਮਰੈ ਨਾ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

सो नरु जमै ना मरै ना आवै ना जाइ ॥

So naru jammai naa marai naa aavai naa jaai ||

Then, they are not subject to birth and death; they do not come and go in reincarnation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਸੋ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੪॥

नानक दरि परधानु सो दरगहि पैधा जाइ ॥४॥१४॥

Naanak dari paradhaanu so daragahi paidhaa jaai ||4||14||

O Nanak, they are respected at the Lord's Gate; they are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord. ||4||14||

ਤਨੁ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਭਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਨੂਰੁ ॥

तनु जलि बलि माटी भइआ मनु माइआ मोहि मनूरु ॥

Tanu jali bali maatee bhaiaa manu maaiaa mohi manooru ||

The body is burnt to ashes; by its love of Maya, the mind is rusted through.

ਅਉਗਣ ਫਿਰਿ ਲਾਗੂ ਭਏ ਕੂਰਿ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਤੂਰੁ ॥

अउगण फिरि लागू भए कूरि वजावै तूरु ॥

Auga(nn) phiri laagoo bhae koori vajaavai tooru ||

Demerits become one's enemies, and falsehood blows the bugle of attack.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਡੋਬੇ ਪੂਰੁ ॥੧॥

बिनु सबदै भरमाईऐ दुबिधा डोबे पूरु ॥१॥

Binu sabadai bharamaaeeai dubidhaa dobe pooru ||1||

Without the Word of the Shabad, people wander lost in reincarnation. Through the love of duality, multitudes have been drowned. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਹੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

मन रे सबदि तरहु चितु लाइ ॥

Man re sabadi tarahu chitu laai ||

O mind, swim across, by focusing your consciousness on the Shabad.

ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिनि गुरमुखि नामु न बूझिआ मरि जनमै आवै जाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jini guramukhi naamu na boojhiaa mari janamai aavai jaai ||1|| rahaau ||

Those who do not become Gurmukh do not understand the Naam; they die, and continue coming and going in reincarnation. ||1|| Pause ||

ਤਨੁ ਸੂਚਾ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

तनु सूचा सो आखीऐ जिसु महि साचा नाउ ॥

Tanu soochaa so aakheeai jisu mahi saachaa naau ||

That body is said to be pure, in which the True Name abides.

ਭੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

भै सचि राती देहुरी जिहवा सचु सुआउ ॥

Bhai sachi raatee dehuree jihavaa sachu suaau ||

One whose body is imbued with the Fear of the True One, and whose tongue savors Truthfulness,

ਸਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਤਾਉ ॥੨॥

सची नदरि निहालीऐ बहुड़ि न पावै ताउ ॥२॥

Sachee nadari nihaaleeai bahu(rr)i na paavai taau ||2||

Is brought to ecstasy by the True Lord's Glance of Grace. That person does not have to go through the fire of the womb again. ||2||

ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

साचे ते पवना भइआ पवनै ते जलु होइ ॥

Saache te pavanaa bhaiaa pavanai te jalu hoi ||

From the True Lord came the air, and from the air came water.

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਇ ॥

जल ते त्रिभवणु साजिआ घटि घटि जोति समोइ ॥

Jal te tribhava(nn)u saajiaa ghati ghati joti samoi ||

From water, He created the three worlds; in each and every heart He has infused His Light.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥

निरमलु मैला ना थीऐ सबदि रते पति होइ ॥३॥

Niramalu mailaa naa theeai sabadi rate pati hoi ||3||

The Immaculate Lord does not become polluted. Attuned to the Shabad, honor is obtained. ||3||

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

इहु मनु साचि संतोखिआ नदरि करे तिसु माहि ॥

Ihu manu saachi santtokhiaa nadari kare tisu maahi ||

One whose mind is contented with Truthfulness, is blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace.

ਪੰਚ ਭੂਤ ਸਚਿ ਭੈ ਰਤੇ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

पंच भूत सचि भै रते जोति सची मन माहि ॥

Pancch bhoot sachi bhai rate joti sachee man maahi ||

The body of the five elements is dyed in the Fear of the True One; the mind is filled with the True Light.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਉਗਣ ਵੀਸਰੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਪਤਿ ਤਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੧੫॥

नानक अउगण वीसरे गुरि राखे पति ताहि ॥४॥१५॥

Naanak auga(nn) veesare guri raakhe pati taahi ||4||15||

O Nanak, your demerits shall be forgotten; the Guru shall preserve your honor. ||4||15||

Naanak be(rr)ee sach kee tareeai gur veechaari ||

O Nanak, the Boat of Truth will ferry you across; contemplate the Guru.

ਇਕਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਜਾਵਹੀ ਪੂਰਿ ਭਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥

इकि आवहि इकि जावही पूरि भरे अहंकारि ॥

Iki aavahi iki jaavahee poori bhare ahankkaari ||

Some come, and some go; they are totally filled with egotism.

ਮਨਹਠਿ ਮਤੀ ਬੂਡੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੁ ਤਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

मनहठि मती बूडीऐ गुरमुखि सचु सु तारि ॥१॥

Manahathi matee boodeeai guramukhi sachu su taari ||1||

Through stubborn-mindedness, the intellect is drowned; one who becomes Gurmukh and truthful is saved. ||1||

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुर बिनु किउ तरीऐ सुखु होइ ॥

Gur binu kiu tareeai sukhu hoi ||

Without the Guru, how can anyone swim across to find peace?

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखु तू मै अवरु न दूजा कोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhu too mai avaru na doojaa koi ||1|| rahaau ||

As it pleases You, Lord, You save me. There is no other for me at all. ||1|| Pause ||

ਆਗੈ ਦੇਖਉ ਡਉ ਜਲੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹਰਿਓ ਅੰਗੂਰੁ ॥

आगै देखउ डउ जलै पाछै हरिओ अंगूरु ॥

Aagai dekhau dau jalai paachhai hario anggooru ||

In front of me, I see the jungle burning; behind me, I see green plants sprouting.

ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਚੁ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

जिस ते उपजै तिस ते बिनसै घटि घटि सचु भरपूरि ॥

Jis te upajai tis te binasai ghati ghati sachu bharapoori ||

We shall merge into the One from whom we came. The True One is pervading each and every heart.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਹੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥੨॥

आपे मेलि मिलावही साचै महलि हदूरि ॥२॥

Aape meli milaavahee saachai mahali hadoori ||2||

He Himself unites us in Union with Himself; the True Mansion of His Presence is close at hand. ||2||

ਸਾਹਿ ਸਾਹਿ ਤੁਝੁ ਸੰਮਲਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰੇਉ ॥

साहि साहि तुझु समला कदे न विसारेउ ॥

Saahi saahi tujhu sammalaa kade na visaareu ||

With each and every breath, I dwell upon You; I shall never forget You.

ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਸਾਹਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੇਉ ॥

जिउ जिउ साहबु मनि वसै गुरमुखि अम्रितु पेउ ॥

Jiu jiu saahabu mani vasai guramukhi ammmritu peu ||

The more the Lord and Master dwells within the mind, the more the Gurmukh drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸਮੇਉ ॥੩॥

मनु तनु तेरा तू धणी गरबु निवारि समेउ ॥३॥

Manu tanu teraa too dha(nn)ee garabu nivaari sameu ||3||

Mind and body are Yours; You are my Master. Please rid me of my pride, and let me merge with You. ||3||

ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

जिनि एहु जगतु उपाइआ त्रिभवणु करि आकारु ॥

Jini ehu jagatu upaaiaa tribhava(nn)u kari aakaaru ||

The One who formed this universe created the creation of the three worlds.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

गुरमुखि चानणु जाणीऐ मनमुखि मुगधु गुबारु ॥

Guramukhi chaana(nn)u jaa(nn)eeai manamukhi mugadhu gubaaru ||

The Gurmukh knows the Divine Light, while the foolish self-willed manmukh gropes around in the darkness.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

घटि घटि जोति निरंतरी बूझै गुरमति सारु ॥४॥

Ghati ghati joti niranttaree boojhai guramati saaru ||4||

One who sees that Light within each and every heart understands the Essence of the Guru's Teachings. ||4||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਕੀਚੈ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥

गुरमुखि जिनी जाणिआ तिन कीचै साबासि ॥

Guramukhi jinee jaa(nn)iaa tin keechai saabaasi ||

Those who understand are Gurmukh; recognize and applaud them.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਲਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥

सचे सेती रलि मिले सचे गुण परगासि ॥

Sache setee rali mile sache gu(nn) paragaasi ||

They meet and merge with the True One. They become the Radiant Manifestation of the Excellence of the True One.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੫॥੧੬॥

नानक नामि संतोखीआ जीउ पिंडु प्रभ पासि ॥५॥१६॥

Naanak naami santtokheeaa jeeu pinddu prbh paasi ||5||16||

O Nanak, they are contented with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. They offer their bodies and souls to God. ||5||16||

ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਮਿਲੁ ਵੇਲਾ ਹੈ ਏਹ ॥

सुणि मन मित्र पिआरिआ मिलु वेला है एह ॥

Su(nn)i man mitr piaariaa milu velaa hai eh ||

Listen, O my mind, my friend, my darling: now is the time to meet the Lord.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇਹ ॥

जब लगु जोबनि सासु है तब लगु इहु तनु देह ॥

Jab lagu jobani saasu hai tab lagu ihu tanu deh ||

As long as there is youth and breath, give this body to Him.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਤਨੁ ਖੇਹ ॥੧॥

बिनु गुण कामि न आवई ढहि ढेरी तनु खेह ॥१॥

Binu gu(nn) kaami na aavaee dhahi dheree tanu kheh ||1||

Without virtue, it is useless; the body shall crumble into a pile of dust. ||1||

ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

मेरे मन लै लाहा घरि जाहि ॥

Mere man lai laahaa ghari jaahi ||

O my mind, earn the profit, before you return home.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਿਵਰੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि नामु सलाहीऐ हउमै निवरी भाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi naamu salaaheeai haumai nivaree bhaahi ||1|| rahaau ||

The Gurmukh praises the Naam, and the fire of egotism is extinguished. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਗੰਢਣੁ ਗੰਢੀਐ ਲਿਖਿ ਪੜਿ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥

सुणि सुणि गंढणु गंढीऐ लिखि पड़ि बुझहि भारु ॥

Su(nn)i su(nn)i ganddha(nn)u ganddheeai likhi pa(rr)i bujhahi bhaaru ||

Again and again, we hear and tell stories; we read and write and understand loads of knowledge,

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਅਗਲੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

त्रिसना अहिनिसि अगली हउमै रोगु विकारु ॥

Trisanaa ahinisi agalee haumai rogu vikaaru ||

But still, desires increase day and night, and the disease of egotism fills us with corruption.

ਓਹੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਅਤੋਲਵਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

ओहु वेपरवाहु अतोलवा गुरमति कीमति सारु ॥२॥

Ohu veparavaahu atolavaa guramati keemati saaru ||2||

That Carefree Lord cannot be appraised; His Real Value is known only through the Wisdom of the Guru's Teachings. ||2||

ਲਖ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਪੁ ॥

लख सिआणप जे करी लख सिउ प्रीति मिलापु ॥

Lakh siaa(nn)ap je karee lakh siu preeti milaapu ||

Even if someone has hundreds of thousands of clever mental tricks, and the love and company of hundreds of thousands of people

ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਨ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੀਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੂਖ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥

बिनु संगति साध न ध्रापीआ बिनु नावै दूख संतापु ॥

Binu sanggati saadh na dhraapeeaa binu naavai dookh santtaapu ||

Still, without the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, he will not feel satisfied. Without the Name, all suffer in sorrow.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਅਰੇ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ॥੩॥

हरि जपि जीअरे छुटीऐ गुरमुखि चीनै आपु ॥३॥

Hari japi jeeare chhuteeai guramukhi cheenai aapu ||3||

Chanting the Name of the Lord, O my soul, you shall be emancipated; as Gurmukh, you shall come to understand your own self. ||3||

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸਿਰੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

तनु मनु गुर पहि वेचिआ मनु दीआ सिरु नालि ॥

Tanu manu gur pahi vechiaa manu deeaa siru naali ||

I have sold my body and mind to the Guru, and I have given my mind and head as well.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਢੰਢੋਲਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥

त्रिभवणु खोजि ढंढोलिआ गुरमुखि खोजि निहालि ॥

Tribhava(nn)u khoji dhanddholiaa guramukhi khoji nihaali ||

I was seeking and searching for Him throughout the three worlds; then, as Gurmukh, I sought and found Him.

ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੪॥੧੭॥

सतगुरि मेलि मिलाइआ नानक सो प्रभु नालि ॥४॥१७॥

Sataguri meli milaaiaa naanak so prbhu naali ||4||17||

The True Guru has united me in Union, O Nanak, with that God. ||4||17||

ਮਰਣੈ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਨਹੀ ਆਸ ॥

मरणै की चिंता नही जीवण की नही आस ॥

Mara(nn)ai kee chinttaa nahee jeeva(nn) kee nahee aas ||

I have no anxiety about dying, and no hope of living.

ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਹੀ ਲੇਖੈ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ॥

तू सरब जीआ प्रतिपालही लेखै सास गिरास ॥

Too sarab jeeaa prtipaalahee lekhai saas giraas ||

You are the Cherisher of all beings; You keep the account of our breaths and morsels of food.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੂ ਵਸਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਨਿਰਜਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

अंतरि गुरमुखि तू वसहि जिउ भावै तिउ निरजासि ॥१॥

Anttari guramukhi too vasahi jiu bhaavai tiu nirajaasi ||1||

You abide within the Gurmukh. As it pleases You, You decide our allotment. ||1||

ਜੀਅਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

जीअरे राम जपत मनु मानु ॥

Jeeare raam japat manu maanu ||

O my soul, chant the Name of the Lord; the mind will be pleased and appeased.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਜਲਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंतरि लागी जलि बुझी पाइआ गुरमुखि गिआनु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anttari laagee jali bujhee paaiaa guramukhi giaanu ||1|| rahaau ||

The raging fire within is extinguished; the Gurmukh obtains spiritual wisdom. ||1|| Pause ||

ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸੰਕ ਉਤਾਰਿ ॥

अंतर की गति जाणीऐ गुर मिलीऐ संक उतारि ॥

Anttar kee gati jaa(nn)eeai gur mileeai sankk utaari ||

Know the state of your inner being; meet with the Guru and get rid of your skepticism.

ਮੁਇਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰੁ ਮਾਰਿ ॥

मुइआ जितु घरि जाईऐ तितु जीवदिआ मरु मारि ॥

Muiaa jitu ghari jaaeeai titu jeevadiaa maru maari ||

To reach your True Home after you die, you must conquer death while you are still alive.

ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

अनहद सबदि सुहावणे पाईऐ गुर वीचारि ॥२॥

Anahad sabadi suhaava(nn)e paaeeai gur veechaari ||2||

The beautiful, Unstruck Sound of the Shabad is obtained, contemplating the Guru. ||2||

ਅਨਹਦ ਬਾਣੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥

अनहद बाणी पाईऐ तह हउमै होइ बिनासु ॥

Anahad baa(nn)ee paaeeai tah haumai hoi binaasu ||

The Unstruck Melody of Gurbani is obtained, and egotism is eliminated.

ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਤਾਸੁ ॥

सतगुरु सेवे आपणा हउ सद कुरबाणै तासु ॥

Sataguru seve aapa(nn)aa hau sad kurabaa(nn)ai taasu ||

I am forever a sacrifice to those who serve their True Guru.

ਖੜਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਨਾਈਐ ਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥

खड़ि दरगह पैनाईऐ मुखि हरि नाम निवासु ॥३॥

Kha(rr)i daragah painaaeeai mukhi hari naam nivaasu ||3||

They are dressed in robes of honor in the Court of the Lord; the Name of the Lord is on their lips. ||3||

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥

जह देखा तह रवि रहे सिव सकती का मेलु ॥

Jah dekhaa tah ravi rahe siv sakatee kaa melu ||

Wherever I look, I see the Lord pervading there, in the union of Shiva and Shakti, of consciousness and matter.

ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਬੰਧੀ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਸੋ ਖੇਲੁ ॥

त्रिहु गुण बंधी देहुरी जो आइआ जगि सो खेलु ॥

Trihu gu(nn) banddhee dehuree jo aaiaa jagi so khelu ||

The three qualities hold the body in bondage; whoever comes into the world is subject to their play.

ਵਿਜੋਗੀ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਮੇਲੁ ॥੪॥

विजोगी दुखि विछुड़े मनमुखि लहहि न मेलु ॥४॥

Vijogee dukhi vichhu(rr)e manamukhi lahahi na melu ||4||

Those who separate themselves from the Lord wander lost in misery. The self-willed manmukhs do not attain union with Him. ||4||

ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚ ਭੈ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

मनु बैरागी घरि वसै सच भै राता होइ ॥

Manu bairaagee ghari vasai sach bhai raataa hoi ||

If the mind becomes balanced and detached, and comes to dwell in its own true home, imbued with the Fear of God,

ਗਿਆਨ ਮਹਾਰਸੁ ਭੋਗਵੈ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

गिआन महारसु भोगवै बाहुड़ि भूख न होइ ॥

Giaan mahaarasu bhogavai baahu(rr)i bhookh na hoi ||

Then it enjoys the essence of supreme spiritual wisdom; it shall never feel hunger again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੁ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥੧੮॥

नानक इहु मनु मारि मिलु भी फिरि दुखु न होइ ॥५॥१८॥

Naanak ihu manu maari milu bhee phiri dukhu na hoi ||5||18||

O Nanak, conquer and subdue this mind; meet with the Lord, and you shall never again suffer in pain. ||5||18||

एहु मनो मूरखु लोभीआ लोभे लगा लोभानु ॥

Ehu mano moorakhu lobheeaa lobhe lagaa laobhaanu ||

This foolish mind is greedy; through greed, it becomes even more attached to greed.

ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਕਤਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਆਵਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥

सबदि न भीजै साकता दुरमति आवनु जानु ॥

Sabadi na bheejai saakataa duramati aavanu jaanu ||

The evil-minded shaaktas, the faithless cynics, are not attuned to the Shabad; they come and go in reincarnation.

ਸਾਧੂ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

साधू सतगुरु जे मिलै ता पाईऐ गुणी निधानु ॥१॥

Saadhoo sataguru je milai taa paaeeai gu(nn)ee nidhaanu ||1||

One who meets with the Holy True Guru finds the Treasure of Excellence. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥

मन रे हउमै छोडि गुमानु ॥

Man re haumai chhodi gumaanu ||

O mind, renounce your egotistical pride.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि गुरु सरवरु सेवि तू पावहि दरगह मानु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari guru saravaru sevi too paavahi daragah maanu ||1|| rahaau ||

Serve the Lord, the Guru, the Sacred Pool, and you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥

राम नामु जपि दिनसु राति गुरमुखि हरि धनु जानु ॥

Raam naamu japi dinasu raati guramukhi hari dhanu jaanu ||

Chant the Name of the Lord day and night; become Gurmukh, and know the Wealth of the Lord.

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣੇ ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

सभि सुख हरि रस भोगणे संत सभा मिलि गिआनु ॥

Sabhi sukh hari ras bhoga(nn)e santt sabhaa mili giaanu ||

All comforts and peace, and the Essence of the Lord, are enjoyed by acquiring spiritual wisdom in the Society of the Saints.

ਨਿਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥

निति अहिनिसि हरि प्रभु सेविआ सतगुरि दीआ नामु ॥२॥

Niti ahinisi hari prbhu seviaa sataguri deeaa naamu ||2||

Day and night, continually serve the Lord God; the True Guru has given the Naam. ||2||

ਕੂਕਰ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਨੁ ॥

कूकर कूड़ु कमाईऐ गुर निंदा पचै पचानु ॥

Kookar koo(rr)u kamaaeeai gur ninddaa pachai pachaanu ||

Those who practice falsehood are dogs; those who slander the Guru shall burn in their own fire.

ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੈ ਖੁਲਹਾਨੁ ॥

भरमे भूला दुखु घणो जमु मारि करै खुलहानु ॥

Bharame bhoolaa dukhu gha(nn)o jamu maari karai khulahaanu ||

They wander lost and confused, deceived by doubt, suffering in terrible pain. The Messenger of Death shall beat them to a pulp.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਭਾਨੁ ॥੩॥

मनमुखि सुखु न पाईऐ गुरमुखि सुखु सुभानु ॥३॥

Manamukhi sukhu na paaeeai guramukhi sukhu subhaanu ||3||

The self-willed manmukhs find no peace, while the Gurmukhs are wondrously joyful. ||3||

ਐਥੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟਾਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥

ऐथै धंधु पिटाईऐ सचु लिखतु परवानु ॥

Aithai dhanddhu pitaaeeai sachu likhatu paravaanu ||

In this world, people are engrossed in false pursuits, but in the world hereafter, only the account of your true actions is accepted.

ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਣੀ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥

हरि सजणु गुरु सेवदा गुर करणी परधानु ॥

Hari saja(nn)u guru sevadaa gur kara(nn)ee paradhaanu ||

The Guru serves the Lord, His Intimate Friend. The Guru's actions are supremely exalted.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਸਚੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੧੯॥

नानक नामु न वीसरै करमि सचै नीसाणु ॥४॥१९॥

Naanak naamu na veesarai karami sachai neesaa(nn)u ||4||19||

O Nanak, never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the True Lord shall bless you with His Mark of Grace. ||4||19||

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਵਡਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

इकु तिलु पिआरा वीसरै रोगु वडा मन माहि ॥

Iku tilu piaaraa veesarai rogu vadaa man maahi ||

Forgetting the Beloved, even for a moment, the mind is afflicted with terrible diseases.

ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

किउ दरगह पति पाईऐ जा हरि न वसै मन माहि ॥

Kiu daragah pati paaeeai jaa hari na vasai man maahi ||

How can honor be attained in His Court, if the Lord does not dwell in the mind?

ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

गुरि मिलिऐ सुखु पाईऐ अगनि मरै गुण माहि ॥१॥

Guri miliai sukhu paaeeai agani marai gu(nn) maahi ||1||

Meeting with the Guru, peace is found. The fire is extinguished in His Glorious Praises. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ॥

मन रे अहिनिसि हरि गुण सारि ॥

Man re ahinisi hari gu(nn) saari ||

O mind, enshrine the Praises of the Lord, day and night.

ਜਿਨ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिन खिनु पलु नामु न वीसरै ते जन विरले संसारि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jin khinu palu naamu na veesarai te jan virale sanssaari ||1|| rahaau ||

One who does not forget the Naam, for a moment or even an instant-how rare is such a person in this world! ||1|| Pause ||

ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥

जोती जोति मिलाईऐ सुरती सुरति संजोगु ॥

Jotee joti milaaeeai suratee surati sanjjogu ||

When one's light merges into the Light, and one's intuitive consciousness is joined with the Intuitive Consciousness,

ਹਿੰਸਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਤੁ ਗਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

हिंसा हउमै गतु गए नाही सहसा सोगु ॥

Hinssaa haumai gatu gae naahee sahasaa sogu ||

Then one's cruel and violent instincts and egotism depart, and skepticism and sorrow are taken away.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥

गुरमुखि जिसु हरि मनि वसै तिसु मेले गुरु संजोगु ॥२॥

Guramukhi jisu hari mani vasai tisu mele guru sanjjogu ||2||

The Lord abides within the mind of the Gurmukh, who merges in the Lord's Union, through the Guru. ||2||

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

काइआ कामणि जे करी भोगे भोगणहारु ॥

Kaaiaa kaama(nn)i je karee bhoge bhoga(nn)ahaaru ||

If I surrender my body like a bride, the Enjoyer will enjoy me.

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਕੀਜਈ ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

तिसु सिउ नेहु न कीजई जो दीसै चलणहारु ॥

Tisu siu nehu na keejaee jo deesai chala(nn)ahaaru ||

Do not make love with one who is just a passing show.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਵਹਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि रवहि सोहागणी सो प्रभु सेज भतारु ॥३॥

Guramukhi ravahi sohaaga(nn)ee so prbhu sej bhataaru ||3||

The Gurmukh is ravished like the pure and happy bride on the Bed of God, her Husband. ||3||

ਚਾਰੇ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਮਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

चारे अगनि निवारि मरु गुरमुखि हरि जलु पाइ ॥

Chaare agani nivaari maru guramukhi hari jalu paai ||

The Gurmukh puts out the four fires, with the Water of the Lord's Name.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਅਘਾਇ ॥

अंतरि कमलु प्रगासिआ अम्रितु भरिआ अघाइ ॥

Anttari kamalu prgaasiaa ammmritu bhariaa aghaai ||

The lotus blossoms deep within the heart, and filled with Ambrosial Nectar, one is satisfied.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੨੦॥

नानक सतगुरु मीतु करि सचु पावहि दरगह जाइ ॥४॥२०॥

Naanak sataguru meetu kari sachu paavahi daragah jaai ||4||20||

O Nanak, make the True Guru your friend; going to His Court, you shall obtain the True Lord. ||4||20||

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਹੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਿ ॥

हरि हरि जपहु पिआरिआ गुरमति ले हरि बोलि ॥

Hari hari japahu piaariaa guramati le hari boli ||

Meditate on the Lord, Har, Har, O my beloved; follow the Guru's Teachings, and speak of the Lord.

ਮਨੁ ਸਚ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਈਐ ਤੁਲੀਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ॥

मनु सच कसवटी लाईऐ तुलीऐ पूरै तोलि ॥

Manu sach kasavatee laaeeai tuleeai poorai toli ||

Apply the Touchstone of Truth to your mind, and see if it comes up to its full weight.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਣਕ ਮੋਲਿ ਅਮੋਲਿ ॥੧॥

कीमति किनै न पाईऐ रिद माणक मोलि अमोलि ॥१॥

Keemati kinai na paaeeai rid maa(nn)ak moli amoli ||1||

No one has found the worth of the ruby of the heart; its value cannot be estimated. ||1||

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

भाई रे हरि हीरा गुर माहि ॥

Bhaaee re hari heeraa gur maahi ||

O Siblings of Destiny, the Diamond of the Lord is within the Guru.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सतसंगति सतगुरु पाईऐ अहिनिसि सबदि सलाहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Satasanggati sataguru paaeeai ahinisi sabadi salaahi ||1|| rahaau ||

The True Guru is found in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. Day and night, praise the Word of His Shabad. ||1|| Pause ||

ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਲੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥

सचु वखरु धनु रासि लै पाईऐ गुर परगासि ॥

Sachu vakharu dhanu raasi lai paaeeai gur paragaasi ||

The True Merchandise, Wealth and Capital are obtained through the Radiant Light of the Guru.

ਜਿਉ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲਿ ਪਾਇਐ ਤਿਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਿ ॥

जिउ अगनि मरै जलि पाइऐ तिउ त्रिसना दासनि दासि ॥

Jiu agani marai jali paaiai tiu trisanaa daasani daasi ||

Just as fire is extinguished by pouring on water, desire becomes the slave of the Lord's slaves.

ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਇਉ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ਤਰਾਸਿ ॥੨॥

जम जंदारु न लगई इउ भउजलु तरै तरासि ॥२॥

Jam janddaaru na lagaee iu bhaujalu tarai taraasi ||2||

The Messenger of Death will not touch you; in this way, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, carrying others across with you. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚ ਭਾਇ ॥

गुरमुखि कूड़ु न भावई सचि रते सच भाइ ॥

Guramukhi koo(rr)u na bhaavaee sachi rate sach bhaai ||

The Gurmukhs do not like falsehood. They are imbued with Truth; they love only Truth.

ਸਾਕਤ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਪਾਂਇ ॥

साकत सचु न भावई कूड़ै कूड़ी पांइ ॥

Saakat sachu na bhaavaee koo(rr)ai koo(rr)ee paani ||

The shaaktas, the faithless cynics, do not like the Truth; false are the foundations of the false.

ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲਿਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥

सचि रते गुरि मेलिऐ सचे सचि समाइ ॥३॥

Sachi rate guri meliai sache sachi samaai ||3||

Imbued with Truth, you shall meet the Guru. The true ones are absorbed into the True Lord. ||3||

ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਹੀਰੁ ॥

मन महि माणकु लालु नामु रतनु पदारथु हीरु ॥

Man mahi maa(nn)aku laalu naamu ratanu padaarathu heeru ||

Within the mind are emeralds and rubies, the Jewel of the Naam, treasures and diamonds.

ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ॥

सचु वखरु धनु नामु है घटि घटि गहिर ग्मभीरु ॥

Sachu vakharu dhanu naamu hai ghati ghati gahir gambbheeru ||

The Naam is the True Merchandise and Wealth; in each and every heart, His Presence is deep and profound.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹੀਰੁ ॥੪॥੨੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि पाईऐ दइआ करे हरि हीरु ॥४॥२१॥

Naanak guramukhi paaeeai daiaa kare hari heeru ||4||21||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh finds the Diamond of the Lord, by His Kindness and Compassion. ||4||21||
