ਵਾਇਨਿ ਚੇਲੇ ਨਚਨਿ ਗੁਰ ॥

वाइनि चेले नचनि गुर ॥

Vaaini chele nachani gur ||

The disciples play the music, and the gurus dance.

ਪੈਰ ਹਲਾਇਨਿ ਫੇਰਨੑਿ ਸਿਰ ॥

पैर हलाइनि फेरन्हि सिर ॥

Pair halaaini pheranhi sir ||

They move their feet and roll their heads.

ਉਡਿ ਉਡਿ ਰਾਵਾ ਝਾਟੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

उडि उडि रावा झाटै पाइ ॥

Udi udi raavaa jhaatai paai ||

The dust flies and falls upon their hair.

ਵੇਖੈ ਲੋਕੁ ਹਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

वेखै लोकु हसै घरि जाइ ॥

Vekhai loku hasai ghari jaai ||

Beholding them, the people laugh, and then go home.

ਰੋਟੀਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਤਾਲ ॥

रोटीआ कारणि पूरहि ताल ॥

Roteeaa kaara(nn)i poorahi taal ||

They beat the drums for the sake of bread.

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾੜਹਿ ਧਰਤੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

आपु पछाड़हि धरती नालि ॥

Aapu pachhaa(rr)ahi dharatee naali ||

They throw themselves upon the ground.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਗੋਪੀਆ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਕਾਨੑ ॥

गावनि गोपीआ गावनि कान्ह ॥

Gaavani gopeeaa gaavani kaanh ||

They sing of the milk-maids, they sing of the Krishnas.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੀਤਾ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਾਮ ॥

गावनि सीता राजे राम ॥

Gaavani seetaa raaje raam ||

They sing of Sitas, and Ramas and kings.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

निरभउ निरंकारु सचु नामु ॥

Nirabhau nirankkaaru sachu naamu ||

The Lord is fearless and formless; His Name is True.

ਜਾ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਗਲ ਜਹਾਨੁ ॥

जा का कीआ सगल जहानु ॥

Jaa kaa keeaa sagal jahaanu ||

The entire universe is His Creation.

ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਚੜਾਉ ॥

सेवक सेवहि करमि चड़ाउ ॥

Sevak sevahi karami cha(rr)aau ||

Those servants, whose destiny is awakened, serve the Lord.

ਭਿੰਨੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥

भिंनी रैणि जिन्हा मनि चाउ ॥

Bhinnee rai(nn)i jinhaa mani chaau ||

The night of their lives is cool with dew; their minds are filled with love for the Lord.

ਸਿਖੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

सिखी सिखिआ गुर वीचारि ॥

Sikhee sikhiaa gur veechaari ||

Contemplating the Guru, I have been taught these teachings;

ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਘਾਏ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

नदरी करमि लघाए पारि ॥

Nadaree karami laghaae paari ||

Granting His Grace, He carries His servants across.

ਕੋਲੂ ਚਰਖਾ ਚਕੀ ਚਕੁ ॥

कोलू चरखा चकी चकु ॥

Koloo charakhaa chakee chaku ||

The oil-press, the spinning wheel, the grinding stones, the potter's wheel,

ਥਲ ਵਾਰੋਲੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਨੰਤੁ ॥

थल वारोले बहुतु अनंतु ॥

Thal vaarole bahutu ananttu ||

The numerous, countless whirlwinds in the desert,

ਲਾਟੂ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਅਨਗਾਹ ॥

लाटू माधाणीआ अनगाह ॥

Laatoo maadhaa(nn)eeaa anagaah ||

The spinning tops, the churning sticks, the threshers,

ਪੰਖੀ ਭਉਦੀਆ ਲੈਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਹ ॥

पंखी भउदीआ लैनि न साह ॥

Pankkhee bhaudeeaa laini na saah ||

The breathless tumblings of the birds,

ਸੂਐ ਚਾੜਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਜੰਤ ॥

सूऐ चाड़ि भवाईअहि जंत ॥

Sooai chaa(rr)i bhavaaeeahi jantt ||

And the men moving round and round on spindles

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਉਦਿਆ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਅੰਤ ॥

नानक भउदिआ गणत न अंत ॥

Naanak bhaudiaa ga(nn)at na antt ||

O Nanak, the tumblers are countless and endless.

ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥

बंधन बंधि भवाए सोइ ॥

Banddhan banddhi bhavaae soi ||

The Lord binds us in bondage - so do we spin around.

ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਨਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

पइऐ किरति नचै सभु कोइ ॥

Paiai kirati nachai sabhu koi ||

According to their actions, so do all people dance.

ਨਚਿ ਨਚਿ ਹਸਹਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਸੇ ਰੋਇ ॥

नचि नचि हसहि चलहि से रोइ ॥

Nachi nachi hasahi chalahi se roi ||

Those who dance and dance and laugh, shall weep on their ultimate departure.

ਉਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਸਿਧ ਨ ਹੋਹਿ ॥

उडि न जाही सिध न होहि ॥

Udi na jaahee sidh na hohi ||

They do not fly to the heavens, nor do they become Siddhas.

ਨਚਣੁ ਕੁਦਣੁ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਚਾਉ ॥

नचणु कुदणु मन का चाउ ॥

Nacha(nn)u kuda(nn)u man kaa chaau ||

They dance and jump around on the urgings of their minds.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨੑ ਮਨਿ ਭਉ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਉ ॥੨॥

नानक जिन्ह मनि भउ तिन्हा मनि भाउ ॥२॥

Naanak jinh mani bhau tinhaa mani bhaau ||2||

O Nanak, those whose minds are filled with the Fear of God, have the love of God in their minds as well. ||2||

ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਇ ਲਇਐ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

नाउ तेरा निरंकारु है नाइ लइऐ नरकि न जाईऐ ॥

Naau teraa nirankkaaru hai naai laiai naraki na jaaeeai ||

Your Name is the Fearless Lord; chanting Your Name, one does not have to go to hell.

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਦੇ ਖਾਜੈ ਆਖਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥

जीउ पिंडु सभु तिस दा दे खाजै आखि गवाईऐ ॥

Jeeu pinddu sabhu tis daa de khaajai aakhi gavaaeeai ||

Soul and body all belong to Him; asking Him to give us sustenance is a waste.

ਜੇ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰਿ ਪੁੰਨਹੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਸਦਾਈਐ ॥

जे लोड़हि चंगा आपणा करि पुंनहु नीचु सदाईऐ ॥

Je lo(rr)ahi changgaa aapa(nn)aa kari punnahu neechu sadaaeeai ||

If you yearn for goodness, then perform good deeds and feel humble.

ਜੇ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਜਰੁ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇਦੀ ਆਈਐ ॥

जे जरवाणा परहरै जरु वेस करेदी आईऐ ॥

Je jaravaa(nn)aa paraharai jaru ves karedee aaeeai ||

Even if you remove the signs of old age, old age shall still come in the guise of death.

ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਭਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੫॥

को रहै न भरीऐ पाईऐ ॥५॥

Ko rahai na bhareeai paaeeai ||5||

No one remains here when the count of the breaths is full. ||5||

ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਰੀਅਤਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

मुसलमाना सिफति सरीअति पड़ि पड़ि करहि बीचारु ॥

Musalamaanaa siphati sareeati pa(rr)i pa(rr)i karahi beechaaru ||

The Muslims praise the Islamic law; they read and reflect upon it.

ਬੰਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੰਦੀ ਵੇਖਣ ਕਉ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ॥

बंदे से जि पवहि विचि बंदी वेखण कउ दीदारु ॥

Bandde se ji pavahi vichi banddee vekha(nn) kau deedaaru ||

The Lord's bound servants are those who bind themselves to see the Lord's Vision.

ਹਿੰਦੂ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

हिंदू सालाही सालाहनि दरसनि रूपि अपारु ॥

Hinddoo saalaahee saalaahani darasani roopi apaaru ||

The Hindus praise the Praiseworthy Lord; the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, His form is incomparable.

ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅਰਚਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਗਰ ਵਾਸੁ ਬਹਕਾਰੁ ॥

तीरथि नावहि अरचा पूजा अगर वासु बहकारु ॥

Teerathi naavahi arachaa poojaa agar vaasu bahakaaru ||

They bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, making offerings of flowers, and burning incense before idols.

ਜੋਗੀ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਨੑਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਅਲਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

जोगी सुंनि धिआवन्हि जेते अलख नामु करतारु ॥

Jogee sunni dhiaavanhi jete alakh naamu karataaru ||

The Yogis meditate on the absolute Lord there; they call the Creator the Unseen Lord.

ਸੂਖਮ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

सूखम मूरति नामु निरंजन काइआ का आकारु ॥

Sookham moorati naamu niranjjan kaaiaa kaa aakaaru ||

But to the subtle image of the Immaculate Name, they apply the form of a body.

ਸਤੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਦੇਣੈ ਕੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

सतीआ मनि संतोखु उपजै देणै कै वीचारि ॥

Sateeaa mani santtokhu upajai de(nn)ai kai veechaari ||

In the minds of the virtuous, contentment is produced, thinking about their giving.

ਦੇ ਦੇ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਗੂਣਾ ਸੋਭ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

दे दे मंगहि सहसा गूणा सोभ करे संसारु ॥

De de manggahi sahasaa goo(nn)aa sobh kare sanssaaru ||

They give and give, but ask a thousand-fold more, and hope that the world will honor them.

ਚੋਰਾ ਜਾਰਾ ਤੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਾ ਖਾਰਾਬਾ ਵੇਕਾਰ ॥

चोरा जारा तै कूड़िआरा खाराबा वेकार ॥

Choraa jaaraa tai koo(rr)iaaraa khaaraabaa vekaar ||

The thieves, adulterers, perjurers, evil-doers and sinners

ਇਕਿ ਹੋਦਾ ਖਾਇ ਚਲਹਿ ਐਥਾਊ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਕਾਈ ਕਾਰ ॥

इकि होदा खाइ चलहि ऐथाऊ तिना भि काई कार ॥

Iki hodaa khaai chalahi aithaau tinaa bhi kaaee kaar ||

- after using up what good karma they had, they depart; have they done any good deeds here at all?

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਜੀਆ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਲੋਆ ਆਕਾਰਾ ਆਕਾਰ ॥

जलि थलि जीआ पुरीआ लोआ आकारा आकार ॥

Jali thali jeeaa pureeaa loaa aakaaraa aakaar ||

There are beings and creatures in the water and on the land, in the worlds and universes, form upon form.

ਓਇ ਜਿ ਆਖਹਿ ਸੁ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਰ ॥

ओइ जि आखहि सु तूंहै जाणहि तिना भि तेरी सार ॥

Oi ji aakhahi su toonhhai jaa(nn)ahi tinaa bhi teree saar ||

Whatever they say, You know; You care for them all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਾਲਾਹਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥

नानक भगता भुख सालाहणु सचु नामु आधारु ॥

Naanak bhagataa bhukh saalaaha(nn)u sachu naamu aadhaaru ||

O Nanak, the hunger of the devotees is to praise You; the True Name is their only support.

ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਣਵੰਤਿਆ ਪਾ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

सदा अनंदि रहहि दिनु राती गुणवंतिआ पा छारु ॥१॥

Sadaa ananddi rahahi dinu raatee gu(nn)avanttiaa paa chhaaru ||1||

They live in eternal bliss, day and night; they are the dust of the feet of the virtuous. ||1||

ਮਿਟੀ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਕੀ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਈ ਕੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆਰ ॥

मिटी मुसलमान की पेड़ै पई कुम्हिआर ॥

Mitee musalamaan kee pe(rr)ai paee kumhiaar ||

The clay of the Muslim's grave becomes clay for the potter's wheel.

ਘੜਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਇਟਾ ਕੀਆ ਜਲਦੀ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

घड़ि भांडे इटा कीआ जलदी करे पुकार ॥

Gha(rr)i bhaande itaa keeaa jaladee kare pukaar ||

Pots and bricks are fashioned from it, and it cries out as it burns.

ਜਲਿ ਜਲਿ ਰੋਵੈ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਅੰਗਿਆਰ ॥

जलि जलि रोवै बपुड़ी झड़ि झड़ि पवहि अंगिआर ॥

Jali jali rovai bapu(rr)ee jha(rr)i jha(rr)i pavahi anggiaar ||

The poor clay burns, burns and weeps, as the fiery coals fall upon it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

नानक जिनि करतै कारणु कीआ सो जाणै करतारु ॥२॥

Naanak jini karatai kaara(nn)u keeaa so jaa(nn)ai karataaru ||2||

O Nanak, the Creator created the creation; the Creator Lord alone knows. ||2||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर किनै न पाइओ बिनु सतिगुर किनै न पाइआ ॥

Binu satigur kinai na paaio binu satigur kinai na paaiaa ||

Without the True Guru, no one has obtained the Lord; without the True Guru, no one has obtained the Lord.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥

सतिगुर विचि आपु रखिओनु करि परगटु आखि सुणाइआ ॥

Satigur vichi aapu rakhionu kari paragatu aakhi su(nn)aaiaa ||

He has placed Himself within the True Guru; revealing Himself, He declares this openly.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

सतिगुर मिलिऐ सदा मुकतु है जिनि विचहु मोहु चुकाइआ ॥

Satigur miliai sadaa mukatu hai jini vichahu mohu chukaaiaa ||

Meeting the True Guru, eternal liberation is obtained; He has banished attachment from within.

ਉਤਮੁ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

उतमु एहु बीचारु है जिनि सचे सिउ चितु लाइआ ॥

Utamu ehu beechaaru hai jini sache siu chitu laaiaa ||

This is the highest thought, that one's consciousness is attached to the True Lord.

ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥

जगजीवनु दाता पाइआ ॥६॥

Jagajeevanu daataa paaiaa ||6||

Thus the Lord of the World, the Great Giver is obtained. ||6||

हउ विचि आइआ हउ विचि गइआ ॥

Hau vichi aaiaa hau vichi gaiaa ||

In ego they come, and in ego they go.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੁਆ ॥

हउ विचि जमिआ हउ विचि मुआ ॥

Hau vichi jammiaa hau vichi muaa ||

In ego they are born, and in ego they die.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਿਤਾ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਇਆ ॥

हउ विचि दिता हउ विचि लइआ ॥

Hau vichi ditaa hau vichi laiaa ||

In ego they give, and in ego they take.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਖਟਿਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

हउ विचि खटिआ हउ विचि गइआ ॥

Hau vichi khatiaa hau vichi gaiaa ||

In ego they earn, and in ego they lose.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ॥

हउ विचि सचिआरु कूड़िआरु ॥

Hau vichi sachiaaru koo(rr)iaaru ||

In ego they become truthful or false.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

हउ विचि पाप पुंन वीचारु ॥

Hau vichi paap punn veechaaru ||

In ego they reflect on virtue and sin.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰੁ ॥

हउ विचि नरकि सुरगि अवतारु ॥

Hau vichi naraki suragi avataaru ||

In ego they go to heaven or hell.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਸੈ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੋਵੈ ॥

हउ विचि हसै हउ विचि रोवै ॥

Hau vichi hasai hau vichi rovai ||

In ego they laugh, and in ego they weep.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਰੀਐ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

हउ विचि भरीऐ हउ विचि धोवै ॥

Hau vichi bhareeai hau vichi dhovai ||

In ego they become dirty, and in ego they are washed clean.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥

हउ विचि जाती जिनसी खोवै ॥

Hau vichi jaatee jinasee khovai ||

In ego they lose social status and class.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

हउ विचि मूरखु हउ विचि सिआणा ॥

Hau vichi moorakhu hau vichi siaa(nn)aa ||

In ego they are ignorant, and in ego they are wise.

ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

मोख मुकति की सार न जाणा ॥

Mokh mukati kee saar na jaa(nn)aa ||

They do not know the value of salvation and liberation.

ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥

हउ विचि माइआ हउ विचि छाइआ ॥

Hau vichi maaiaa hau vichi chhaaiaa ||

In ego they love Maya, and in ego they are kept in darkness by it.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥

हउमै करि करि जंत उपाइआ ॥

Haumai kari kari jantt upaaiaa ||

Living in ego, mortal beings are created.

ਹਉਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾ ਦਰੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

हउमै बूझै ता दरु सूझै ॥

Haumai boojhai taa daru soojhai ||

When one understands ego, then the Lord's gate is known.

ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

गिआन विहूणा कथि कथि लूझै ॥

Giaan vihoo(nn)aa kathi kathi loojhai ||

Without spiritual wisdom, they babble and argue.

Naanak hukamee likheeai lekhu ||

O Nanak, by the Lord's Command, destiny is recorded.

ਜੇਹਾ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਤੇਹਾ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੧॥

जेहा वेखहि तेहा वेखु ॥१॥

Jehaa vekhahi tehaa vekhu ||1||

As the Lord sees us, so are we seen. ||1||

Pauree:

ਸੇਵ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਈਂ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

सेव कीती संतोखीईं जिन्ही सचो सचु धिआइआ ॥

Sev keetee santtokheeeen jinhee sacho sachu dhiaaiaa ||

Those who serve are content. They meditate on the Truest of the True.

ਓਨੑੀ ਮੰਦੈ ਪੈਰੁ ਨ ਰਖਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

ओन्ही मंदै पैरु न रखिओ करि सुक्रितु धरमु कमाइआ ॥

Onhee manddai pairu na rakhio kari sukritu dharamu kamaaiaa ||

They do not place their feet in sin, but do good deeds and live righteously in Dharma.

ਓਨੑੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤੋੜੇ ਬੰਧਨਾ ਅੰਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਥੋੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

ओन्ही दुनीआ तोड़े बंधना अंनु पाणी थोड़ा खाइआ ॥

Onhee duneeaa to(rr)e banddhanaa annu paa(nn)ee tho(rr)aa khaaiaa ||

They burn away the bonds of the world, and eat a simple diet of grain and water.

ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸੀਸੀ ਅਗਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥

तूं बखसीसी अगला नित देवहि चड़हि सवाइआ ॥

Toonn bakhaseesee agalaa nit devahi cha(rr)ahi savaaiaa ||

You are the Great Forgiver; You give continually, more and more each day.

ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵਡਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥

वडिआई वडा पाइआ ॥७॥

Vadiaaee vadaa paaiaa ||7||

By His greatness, the Great Lord is obtained. ||7||

ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਬਿਰਖਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਤਟਾਂ ਮੇਘਾਂ ਖੇਤਾਂਹ ॥

पुरखां बिरखां तीरथां तटां मेघां खेतांह ॥

Purakhaan birakhaan teerathaan tataan meghaan khetaanh ||

Men, trees, sacred shrines of pilgrimage, banks of sacred rivers, clouds, fields,

ਦੀਪਾਂ ਲੋਆਂ ਮੰਡਲਾਂ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਵਰਭੰਡਾਂਹ ॥

दीपां लोआं मंडलां खंडां वरभंडांह ॥

Deepaan loaan manddalaan khanddaan varabhanddaanh ||

Islands, continents, worlds, solar systems, and universes;

ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਉਤਭੁਜਾਂ ਖਾਣੀ ਸੇਤਜਾਂਹ ॥

अंडज जेरज उतभुजां खाणी सेतजांह ॥

Anddaj jeraj utabhujaan khaa(nn)ee setajaanh ||

The four sources of creation - born of eggs, born of the womb, born of the earth and born of sweat;

ਸੋ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਰਾਂ ਮੇਰਾਂ ਜੰਤਾਹ ॥

सो मिति जाणै नानका सरां मेरां जंताह ॥

So miti jaa(nn)ai naanakaa saraan meraan janttaah ||

Oceans, mountains, and all beings - O Nanak, He alone knows their condition.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਸੰਮਾਲੇ ਸਭਨਾਹ ॥

नानक जंत उपाइ कै समाले सभनाह ॥

Naanak jantt upaai kai sammaale sabhanaah ||

O Nanak, having created the living beings, He cherishes them all.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਰਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਭਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਤਾਹ ॥

जिनि करतै करणा कीआ चिंता भि करणी ताह ॥

Jini karatai kara(nn)aa keeaa chinttaa bhi kara(nn)ee taah ||

The Creator who created the creation, takes care of it as well.

ਸੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਜਗੁ ॥

सो करता चिंता करे जिनि उपाइआ जगु ॥

So karataa chinttaa kare jini upaaiaa jagu ||

He, the Creator who formed the world, cares for it.

ਤਿਸੁ ਜੋਹਾਰੀ ਸੁਅਸਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਅਭਗੁ ॥

तिसु जोहारी सुअसति तिसु तिसु दीबाणु अभगु ॥

Tisu johaaree suasati tisu tisu deebaa(nn)u abhagu ||

Unto Him I bow and offer my reverence; His Royal Court is eternal.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਟਿਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਤਗੁ ॥੧॥

नानक सचे नाम बिनु किआ टिका किआ तगु ॥१॥

Naanak sache naam binu kiaa tikaa kiaa tagu ||1||

O Nanak, without the True Name, of what use is the frontal mark of the Hindus, or their sacred thread? ||1||

Lakh nekeeaa changgiaaeeaa lakh punnaa paravaa(nn)u ||

Hundreds of thousands of virtues and good actions, and hundreds of thousands of blessed charities,

ਲਖ ਤਪ ਉਪਰਿ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਸਹਜ ਜੋਗ ਬੇਬਾਣ ॥

लख तप उपरि तीरथां सहज जोग बेबाण ॥

Lakh tap upari teerathaan sahaj jog bebaa(nn) ||

Hundreds of thousands of penances at sacred shrines, and the practice of Sehj Yoga in the wilderness,

ਲਖ ਸੂਰਤਣ ਸੰਗਰਾਮ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਛੁਟਹਿ ਪਰਾਣ ॥

लख सूरतण संगराम रण महि छुटहि पराण ॥

Lakh soorata(nn) sanggaraam ra(nn) mahi chhutahi paraa(nn) ||

Hundreds of thousands of courageous actions and giving up the breath of life on the field of battle,

ਲਖ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਲਖ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥

लख सुरती लख गिआन धिआन पड़ीअहि पाठ पुराण ॥

Lakh suratee lakh giaan dhiaan pa(rr)eeahi paath puraa(nn) ||

Hundreds of thousands of divine understandings, hundreds of thousands of divine wisdoms and meditations and readings of the Vedas and the Puraanas

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਰਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

जिनि करतै करणा कीआ लिखिआ आवण जाणु ॥

Jini karatai kara(nn)aa keeaa likhiaa aava(nn) jaa(nn)u ||

- before the Creator who created the creation, and who ordained coming and going,

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਤੀ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

नानक मती मिथिआ करमु सचा नीसाणु ॥२॥

Naanak matee mithiaa karamu sachaa neesaa(nn)u ||2||

O Nanak, all these things are false. True is the Insignia of His Grace. ||2||

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥

सचा साहिबु एकु तूं जिनि सचो सचु वरताइआ ॥

Sachaa saahibu eku toonn jini sacho sachu varataaiaa ||

You alone are the True Lord. The Truth of Truths is pervading everywhere.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

जिसु तूं देहि तिसु मिलै सचु ता तिन्ही सचु कमाइआ ॥

Jisu toonn dehi tisu milai sachu taa tinhee sachu kamaaiaa ||

He alone receives the Truth, unto whom You give it; then, he practices Truth.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਚੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

सतिगुरि मिलिऐ सचु पाइआ जिन्ह कै हिरदै सचु वसाइआ ॥

Satiguri miliai sachu paaiaa jinh kai hiradai sachu vasaaiaa ||

Meeting the True Guru, Truth is found. In His Heart, Truth is abiding.

ਮੂਰਖ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੑੀ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

मूरख सचु न जाणन्ही मनमुखी जनमु गवाइआ ॥

Moorakh sachu na jaa(nn)anhee manamukhee janamu gavaaiaa ||

The fools do not know the Truth. The self-willed manmukhs waste their lives away in vain.

ਵਿਚਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥੮॥

विचि दुनीआ काहे आइआ ॥८॥

Vichi duneeaa kaahe aaiaa ||8||

Why have they even come into the world? ||8||

पड़ि पड़ि गडी लदीअहि पड़ि पड़ि भरीअहि साथ ॥

Pa(rr)i pa(rr)i gadee ladeeahi pa(rr)i pa(rr)i bhareeahi saath ||

You may read and read loads of books; you may read and study vast multitudes of books.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਤ ॥

पड़ि पड़ि बेड़ी पाईऐ पड़ि पड़ि गडीअहि खात ॥

Pa(rr)i pa(rr)i be(rr)ee paaeeai pa(rr)i pa(rr)i gadeeahi khaat ||

You may read and read boat-loads of books; you may read and read and fill pits with them.

ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਬਰਸ ਬਰਸ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਮਾਸ ॥

पड़ीअहि जेते बरस बरस पड़ीअहि जेते मास ॥

Pa(rr)eeahi jete baras baras pa(rr)eeahi jete maas ||

You may read them year after year; you may read them as many months are there are.

ਪੜੀਐ ਜੇਤੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਸਾਸ ॥

पड़ीऐ जेती आरजा पड़ीअहि जेते सास ॥

Pa(rr)eeai jetee aarajaa pa(rr)eeahi jete saas ||

You may read them all your life; you may read them with every breath.

ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਇਕ ਗਲ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਾਖ ॥੧॥

नानक लेखै इक गल होरु हउमै झखणा झाख ॥१॥

Naanak lekhai ik gal horu haumai jhakha(nn)aa jhaakh ||1||

O Nanak, only one thing is of any account: everything else is useless babbling and idle talk in ego. ||1||

The more one write and reads,

ਤੇਤਾ ਕੜਿਆ ॥

तेता कड़िआ ॥

Tetaa ka(rr)iaa ||

The more one burns.

ਬਹੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵਿਆ ॥

बहु तीरथ भविआ ॥

Bahu teerath bhaviaa ||

The more one wanders at sacred shrines of pilgrimage,

ਤੇਤੋ ਲਵਿਆ ॥

तेतो लविआ ॥

Teto laviaa ||

The more one talks uselessly.

ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕੀਆ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਆ ॥

बहु भेख कीआ देही दुखु दीआ ॥

Bahu bhekh keeaa dehee dukhu deeaa ||

The more one wears religious robes, the more pain he causes his body.

ਸਹੁ ਵੇ ਜੀਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ॥

सहु वे जीआ अपणा कीआ ॥

Sahu ve jeeaa apa(nn)aa keeaa ||

O my soul, you must endure the consequences of your own actions.

ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਾਦੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

अंनु न खाइआ सादु गवाइआ ॥

Annu na khaaiaa saadu gavaaiaa ||

One who does not eat the corn, misses out on the taste.

ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

बहु दुखु पाइआ दूजा भाइआ ॥

Bahu dukhu paaiaa doojaa bhaaiaa ||

One obtains great pain, in the love of duality.

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਪਹਿਰੈ ॥

बसत्र न पहिरै ॥

Basatr na pahirai ||

One who does not wear any clothes,

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਹਰੈ ॥

अहिनिसि कहरै ॥

Ahinisi kaharai ||

Suffers night and day.

ਮੋਨਿ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ॥

मोनि विगूता ॥

Moni vigootaa ||

Through silence, he is ruined.

ਕਿਉ ਜਾਗੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੂਤਾ ॥

किउ जागै गुर बिनु सूता ॥

Kiu jaagai gur binu sootaa ||

How can the sleeping one be awakened without the Guru?

ਪਗ ਉਪੇਤਾਣਾ ॥

पग उपेताणा ॥

Pag upetaa(nn)aa ||

One who goes barefoot

ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥

अपणा कीआ कमाणा ॥

Apa(nn)aa keeaa kamaa(nn)aa ||

Suffers by his own actions.

ਅਲੁ ਮਲੁ ਖਾਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥

अलु मलु खाई सिरि छाई पाई ॥

Alu malu khaaee siri chhaaee paaee ||

One who eats filth and throws ashes on his head

ਮੂਰਖਿ ਅੰਧੈ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

मूरखि अंधै पति गवाई ॥

Moorakhi anddhai pati gavaaee ||

The blind fool loses his honor.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

विणु नावै किछु थाइ न पाई ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai kichhu thaai na paaee ||

Without the Name, nothing is of any use.

ਰਹੈ ਬੇਬਾਣੀ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ॥

रहै बेबाणी मड़ी मसाणी ॥

Rahai bebaa(nn)ee ma(rr)ee masaa(nn)ee ||

One who lives in the wilderness, in cemeteries and cremation grounds -

ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥

अंधु न जाणै फिरि पछुताणी ॥

Anddhu na jaa(nn)ai phiri pachhutaa(nn)ee ||

- that blind man does not know the Lord; he regrets and repents in the end.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

सतिगुरु भेटे सो सुखु पाए ॥

Satiguru bhete so sukhu paae ||

One who meets the True Guru finds peace.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

हरि का नामु मंनि वसाए ॥

Hari kaa naamu manni vasaae ||

He enshrines the Name of the Lord in his mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥

नानक नदरि करे सो पाए ॥

Naanak nadari kare so paae ||

O Nanak, when the Lord grants His Grace, He is obtained.

ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਤੇ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥੨॥

आस अंदेसे ते निहकेवलु हउमै सबदि जलाए ॥२॥

Aas anddese te nihakevalu haumai sabadi jalaae ||2||

He becomes free of hope and fear, and burns away his ego with the Word of the Shabad. ||2||

ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗਾਵਦੇ ॥

भगत तेरै मनि भावदे दरि सोहनि कीरति गावदे ॥

Bhagat terai mani bhaavade dari sohani keerati gaavade ||

Your devotees are pleasing to Your Mind, Lord. They look beautiful at Your door, singing Your Praises.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਦਰਿ ਢੋਅ ਨ ਲਹਨੑੀ ਧਾਵਦੇ ॥

नानक करमा बाहरे दरि ढोअ न लहन्ही धावदे ॥

Naanak karamaa baahare dari dhoa na lahanhee dhaavade ||

O Nanak, those who are denied Your Grace, find no shelter at Your Door; they continue wandering.

ਇਕਿ ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝਨੑਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਣਹੋਦਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇਦੇ ॥

इकि मूलु न बुझन्हि आपणा अणहोदा आपु गणाइदे ॥

Iki moolu na bujhanhi aapa(nn)aa a(nn)ahodaa aapu ga(nn)aaide ||

Some do not understand their origins, and without cause, they display their self-conceit.

ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਕਾ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੋਰਿ ਉਤਮ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਦਾਇਦੇ ॥

हउ ढाढी का नीच जाति होरि उतम जाति सदाइदे ॥

Hau dhaadhee kaa neech jaati hori utam jaati sadaaide ||

I am the Lord's minstrel, of low social status; others call themselves high caste.

ਤਿਨੑ ਮੰਗਾ ਜਿ ਤੁਝੈ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ॥੯॥

तिन्ह मंगा जि तुझै धिआइदे ॥९॥

Tinh manggaa ji tujhai dhiaaide ||9||

I seek those who meditate on You. ||9||

False is the king, false are the subjects; false is the whole world.

ਕੂੜੁ ਮੰਡਪ ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾੜੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੈਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ु मंडप कूड़ु माड़ी कूड़ु बैसणहारु ॥

Koo(rr)u manddap koo(rr)u maa(rr)ee koo(rr)u baisa(nn)ahaaru ||

False is the mansion, false are the skyscrapers; false are those who live in them.

ਕੂੜੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਪੈਨੑਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ु सुइना कूड़ु रुपा कूड़ु पैन्हणहारु ॥

Koo(rr)u suinaa koo(rr)u rupaa koo(rr)u painh(nn)ahaaru ||

False is gold, and false is silver; false are those who wear them.

ਕੂੜੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪੜੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ु काइआ कूड़ु कपड़ु कूड़ु रूपु अपारु ॥

Koo(rr)u kaaiaa koo(rr)u kapa(rr)u koo(rr)u roopu apaaru ||

False is the body, false are the clothes; false is incomparable beauty.

ਕੂੜੁ ਮੀਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੀਬੀ ਖਪਿ ਹੋਏ ਖਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ु मीआ कूड़ु बीबी खपि होए खारु ॥

Koo(rr)u meeaa koo(rr)u beebee khapi hoe khaaru ||

False is the husband, false is the wife; they mourn and waste away.

ਕੂੜਿ ਕੂੜੈ ਨੇਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਵਿਸਰਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ि कूड़ै नेहु लगा विसरिआ करतारु ॥

Koo(rr)i koo(rr)ai nehu lagaa visariaa karataaru ||

The false ones love falsehood, and forget their Creator.

ਕਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

किसु नालि कीचै दोसती सभु जगु चलणहारु ॥

Kisu naali keechai dosatee sabhu jagu chala(nn)ahaaru ||

With whom should I become friends, if all the world shall pass away?

कूड़ु मिठा कूड़ु माखिउ कूड़ु डोबे पूरु ॥

Koo(rr)u mithaa koo(rr)u maakhiu koo(rr)u dobe pooru ||

False is sweetness, false is honey; through falsehood, boat-loads of men have drowned.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਕੂੜੁ ॥੧॥

नानकु वखाणै बेनती तुधु बाझु कूड़ो कूड़ु ॥१॥

Naanaku vakhaa(nn)ai benatee tudhu baajhu koo(rr)o koo(rr)u ||1||

Nanak speaks this prayer: without You, Lord, everything is totally false. ||1||

Sachu taa paru jaa(nn)eeai jaa ridai sachaa hoi ||

One knows the Truth only when the Truth is in his heart.

ਕੂੜ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਉਤਰੈ ਤਨੁ ਕਰੇ ਹਛਾ ਧੋਇ ॥

कूड़ की मलु उतरै तनु करे हछा धोइ ॥

Koo(rr) kee malu utarai tanu kare hachhaa dhoi ||

The filth of falsehood departs, and the body is washed clean.

ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਚਿ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

सचु ता परु जाणीऐ जा सचि धरे पिआरु ॥

Sachu taa paru jaa(nn)eeai jaa sachi dhare piaaru ||

One knows the Truth only when he bears love to the True Lord.

ਨਾਉ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਸੀਐ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

नाउ सुणि मनु रहसीऐ ता पाए मोख दुआरु ॥

Naau su(nn)i manu rahaseeai taa paae mokh duaaru ||

Hearing the Name, the mind is enraptured; then, he attains the gate of salvation.

ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

सचु ता परु जाणीऐ जा जुगति जाणै जीउ ॥

Sachu taa paru jaa(nn)eeai jaa jugati jaa(nn)ai jeeu ||

One knows the Truth only when he knows the true way of life.

ਧਰਤਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਤਾ ਬੀਉ ॥

धरति काइआ साधि कै विचि देइ करता बीउ ॥

Dharati kaaiaa saadhi kai vichi dei karataa beeu ||

Preparing the field of the body, he plants the Seed of the Creator.

ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਿਖ ਸਚੀ ਲੇਇ ॥

सचु ता परु जाणीऐ जा सिख सची लेइ ॥

Sachu taa paru jaa(nn)eeai jaa sikh sachee lei ||

One knows the Truth only when he receives true instruction.

ਦਇਆ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

दइआ जाणै जीअ की किछु पुंनु दानु करेइ ॥

Daiaa jaa(nn)ai jeea kee kichhu punnu daanu karei ||

Showing mercy to other beings, he makes donations to charities.

ਸਚੁ ਤਾਂ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਤਮ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥

सचु तां परु जाणीऐ जा आतम तीरथि करे निवासु ॥

Sachu taan paru jaa(nn)eeai jaa aatam teerathi kare nivaasu ||

One knows the Truth only when he dwells in the sacred shrine of pilgrimage of his own soul.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੋ ਪੁਛਿ ਕੈ ਬਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥

सतिगुरू नो पुछि कै बहि रहै करे निवासु ॥

Satiguroo no puchhi kai bahi rahai kare nivaasu ||

He sits and receives instruction from the True Guru, and lives in accordance with His Will.

ਸਚੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਹੋਇ ਦਾਰੂ ਪਾਪ ਕਢੈ ਧੋਇ ॥

सचु सभना होइ दारू पाप कढै धोइ ॥

Sachu sabhanaa hoi daaroo paap kadhai dhoi ||

Truth is the medicine for all; it removes and washes away our sins.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਚੁ ਪਲੈ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानकु वखाणै बेनती जिन सचु पलै होइ ॥२॥

Naanaku vakhaa(nn)ai benatee jin sachu palai hoi ||2||

Nanak speaks this prayer to those who have Truth in their laps. ||2||

ਦਾਨੁ ਮਹਿੰਡਾ ਤਲੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

दानु महिंडा तली खाकु जे मिलै त मसतकि लाईऐ ॥

Daanu mahinddaa talee khaaku je milai ta masataki laaeeai ||

The gift I seek is the dust of the feet of the Saints; if I were to obtain it, I would apply it to my forehead.

ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛਡੀਐ ਹੋਇ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

कूड़ा लालचु छडीऐ होइ इक मनि अलखु धिआईऐ ॥

Koo(rr)aa laalachu chhadeeai hoi ik mani alakhu dhiaaeeai ||

Renounce false greed, and meditate single-mindedly on the unseen Lord.

ਫਲੁ ਤੇਵੇਹੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇਵੇਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥

फलु तेवेहो पाईऐ जेवेही कार कमाईऐ ॥

Phalu teveho paaeeai jevehee kaar kamaaeeai ||

As are the actions we commit, so are the rewards we receive.

ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾ ਧੂੜਿ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

जे होवै पूरबि लिखिआ ता धूड़ि तिन्हा दी पाईऐ ॥

Je hovai poorabi likhiaa taa dhoo(rr)i tinhaa dee paaeeai ||

If it is so pre-ordained, then one obtains the dust of the feet of the Saints.

ਮਤਿ ਥੋੜੀ ਸੇਵ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੧੦॥

मति थोड़ी सेव गवाईऐ ॥१०॥

Mati tho(rr)ee sev gavaaeeai ||10||

But through small-mindedness, we forfeit the merits of selfless service. ||10||

ਸਚਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲਖ ਬੇਤਾਲ ॥

सचि कालु कूड़ु वरतिआ कलि कालख बेताल ॥

Sachi kaalu koo(rr)u varatiaa kali kaalakh betaal ||

There is a famine of Truth; falsehood prevails, and the blackness of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga has turned men into demons.

ਬੀਉ ਬੀਜਿ ਪਤਿ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਅਬ ਕਿਉ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਾਲਿ ॥

बीउ बीजि पति लै गए अब किउ उगवै दालि ॥

Beeu beeji pati lai gae ab kiu ugavai daali ||

Those who planted their seed have departed with honor; now, how can the shattered seed sprout?

ਜੇ ਇਕੁ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਉਗਵੈ ਰੁਤੀ ਹੂ ਰੁਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

जे इकु होइ त उगवै रुती हू रुति होइ ॥

Je iku hoi ta ugavai rutee hoo ruti hoi ||

If the seed is whole, and it is the proper season, then the seed will sprout.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਹੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਕੋਰੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਸੋਇ ॥

नानक पाहै बाहरा कोरै रंगु न सोइ ॥

Naanak paahai baaharaa korai ranggu na soi ||

O Nanak, without treatment, the raw fabric cannot be dyed.

ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਈਐ ਸਰਮੁ ਪਾਹੁ ਤਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

भै विचि खु्मबि चड़ाईऐ सरमु पाहु तनि होइ ॥

Bhai vichi khumbbi cha(rr)aaeeai saramu paahu tani hoi ||

In the Fear of God it is bleached white, if the treatment of modesty is applied to the cloth of the body.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਜੇ ਰਪੈ ਕੂੜੈ ਸੋਇ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥

नानक भगती जे रपै कूड़ै सोइ न कोइ ॥१॥

Naanak bhagatee je rapai koo(rr)ai soi na koi ||1||

O Nanak, if one is imbued with devotional worship, his reputation is not false. ||1||

लबु पापु दुइ राजा महता कूड़ु होआ सिकदारु ॥

Labu paapu dui raajaa mahataa koo(rr)u hoaa sikadaaru ||

Greed and sin are the king and prime minister; falsehood is the treasurer.

ਕਾਮੁ ਨੇਬੁ ਸਦਿ ਪੁਛੀਐ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कामु नेबु सदि पुछीऐ बहि बहि करे बीचारु ॥

Kaamu nebu sadi puchheeai bahi bahi kare beechaaru ||

Sexual desire, the chief advisor, is summoned and consulted; they all sit together and contemplate their plans.

ਅੰਧੀ ਰਯਤਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਭਰੇ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥

अंधी रयति गिआन विहूणी भाहि भरे मुरदारु ॥

Anddhee rayati giaan vihoo(nn)ee bhaahi bhare muradaaru ||

Their subjects are blind, and without wisdom, they try to please the will of the dead.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਨਚਹਿ ਵਾਜੇ ਵਾਵਹਿ ਰੂਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

गिआनी नचहि वाजे वावहि रूप करहि सीगारु ॥

Giaanee nachahi vaaje vaavahi roop karahi seegaaru ||

The spiritually wise dance and play their musical instruments, adorning themselves with beautiful decorations.

ਊਚੇ ਕੂਕਹਿ ਵਾਦਾ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਜੋਧਾ ਕਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

ऊचे कूकहि वादा गावहि जोधा का वीचारु ॥

Uche kookahi vaadaa gaavahi jodhaa kaa veechaaru ||

They shout out loud, and sing epic poems and heroic stories.

ਮੂਰਖ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਹੁਜਤਿ ਸੰਜੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

मूरख पंडित हिकमति हुजति संजै करहि पिआरु ॥

Moorakh panddit hikamati hujati sanjjai karahi piaaru ||

The fools call themselves spiritual scholars, and by their clever tricks, they love to gather wealth.

ਧਰਮੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਵਹਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

धरमी धरमु करहि गावावहि मंगहि मोख दुआरु ॥

Dharamee dharamu karahi gaavaavahi manggahi mokh duaaru ||

The righteous waste their righteousness, by asking for the door of salvation.

ਜਤੀ ਸਦਾਵਹਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਛਡਿ ਬਹਹਿ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥

जती सदावहि जुगति न जाणहि छडि बहहि घर बारु ॥

Jatee sadaavahi jugati na jaa(nn)ahi chhadi bahahi ghar baaru ||

They call themselves celibate, and abandon their homes, but they do not know the true way of life.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਪੂਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਟਿ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ॥

सभु को पूरा आपे होवै घटि न कोई आखै ॥

Sabhu ko pooraa aape hovai ghati na koee aakhai ||

Everyone calls himself perfect; none call themselves imperfect.

ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ਪਿਛੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੋਲਿਆ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥

पति परवाणा पिछै पाईऐ ता नानक तोलिआ जापै ॥२॥

Pati paravaa(nn)aa pichhai paaeeai taa naanak toliaa jaapai ||2||

If the weight of honor is placed on the scale, then, O Nanak, one sees his true weight. ||2||

Vadee su vajagi naanakaa sachaa vekhai soi ||

Evil actions become publicly known; O Nanak, the True Lord sees everything.

ਸਭਨੀ ਛਾਲਾ ਮਾਰੀਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभनी छाला मारीआ करता करे सु होइ ॥

Sabhanee chhaalaa maareeaa karataa kare su hoi ||

Everyone makes the attempt, but that alone happens which the Creator Lord does.

ਅਗੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜੋਰੁ ਹੈ ਅਗੈ ਜੀਉ ਨਵੇ ॥

अगै जाति न जोरु है अगै जीउ नवे ॥

Agai jaati na joru hai agai jeeu nave ||

In the world hereafter, social status and power mean nothing; hereafter, the soul is new.

ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਵੈ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੇਈ ਕੇਇ ॥੩॥

जिन की लेखै पति पवै चंगे सेई केइ ॥३॥

Jin kee lekhai pati pavai changge seee kei ||3||

Those few, whose honor is confirmed, are good. ||3||

ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਤਿਨੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

धुरि करमु जिना कउ तुधु पाइआ ता तिनी खसमु धिआइआ ॥

Dhuri karamu jinaa kau tudhu paaiaa taa tinee khasamu dhiaaiaa ||

Only those whose karma You have pre-ordained from the very beginning, O Lord, meditate on You.

ਏਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੁਧੁ ਵੇਕੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥

एना जंता कै वसि किछु नाही तुधु वेकी जगतु उपाइआ ॥

Enaa janttaa kai vasi kichhu naahee tudhu vekee jagatu upaaiaa ||

Nothing is in the power of these beings; You created the various worlds.

ਇਕਨਾ ਨੋ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਆਪਹੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਖੁਆਇਆ ॥

इकना नो तूं मेलि लैहि इकि आपहु तुधु खुआइआ ॥

Ikanaa no toonn meli laihi iki aapahu tudhu khuaaiaa ||

Some, You unite with Yourself, and some, You lead astray.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਿਥੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੁ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ॥

गुर किरपा ते जाणिआ जिथै तुधु आपु बुझाइआ ॥

Gur kirapaa te jaa(nn)iaa jithai tudhu aapu bujhaaiaa ||

By Guru's Grace You are known; through Him, You reveal Yourself.

ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥

सहजे ही सचि समाइआ ॥११॥

Sahaje hee sachi samaaiaa ||11||

We are easily absorbed in You. ||11||

ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਸੁਖੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਜਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਮਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

दुखु दारू सुखु रोगु भइआ जा सुखु तामि न होई ॥

Dukhu daaroo sukhu rogu bhaiaa jaa sukhu taami na hoee ||

Suffering is the medicine, and pleasure the disease, because where there is pleasure, there is no desire for God.

ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਮੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾ ਹਉ ਕਰੀ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥

तूं करता करणा मै नाही जा हउ करी न होई ॥१॥

Toonn karataa kara(nn)aa mai naahee jaa hau karee na hoee ||1||

You are the Creator Lord; I can do nothing. Even if I try, nothing happens. ||1||


ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥

बलिहारी कुदरति वसिआ ॥

Balihaaree kudarati vasiaa ||

I am a sacrifice to Your almighty creative power which is pervading everywhere.

ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਖਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तेरा अंतु न जाई लखिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Teraa anttu na jaaee lakhiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

ਜਾਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਅਕਲ ਕਲਾ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥

जाति महि जोति जोति महि जाता अकल कला भरपूरि रहिआ ॥

Jaati mahi joti joti mahi jaataa akal kalaa bharapoori rahiaa ||

Your Light is in Your creatures, and Your creatures are in Your Light; Your almighty power is pervading everywhere.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸੁਆਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੋ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਇਆ ॥

तूं सचा साहिबु सिफति सुआल्हिउ जिनि कीती सो पारि पइआ ॥

Toonn sachaa saahibu siphati suaalhiu jini keetee so paari paiaa ||

You are the True Lord and Master; Your Praise is so beautiful. One who sings it, is carried across.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀਆ ਬਾਤਾ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੨॥

कहु नानक करते कीआ बाता जो किछु करणा सु करि रहिआ ॥२॥

Kahu naanak karate keeaa baataa jo kichhu kara(nn)aa su kari rahiaa ||2||

Nanak speaks the stories of the Creator Lord; whatever He is to do, He does. ||2||

ਕੁੰਭੇ ਬਧਾ ਜਲੁ ਰਹੈ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੁੰਭੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

कु्मभे बधा जलु रहै जल बिनु कु्मभु न होइ ॥

Kumbbhe badhaa jalu rahai jal binu kumbbhu na hoi ||

Water remains confined within the pitcher, but without water, the pitcher could not have been formed;

ਗਿਆਨ ਕਾ ਬਧਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥

गिआन का बधा मनु रहै गुर बिनु गिआनु न होइ ॥५॥

Giaan kaa badhaa manu rahai gur binu giaanu na hoi ||5||

Just so, the mind is restrained by spiritual wisdom, but without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom. ||5||

Pa(rr)iaa hovai gunahagaaru taa omee saadhu na maareeai ||

If an educated person is a sinner, then the illiterate holy man is not to be punished.

ਜੇਹਾ ਘਾਲੇ ਘਾਲਣਾ ਤੇਵੇਹੋ ਨਾਉ ਪਚਾਰੀਐ ॥

जेहा घाले घालणा तेवेहो नाउ पचारीऐ ॥

Jehaa ghaale ghaala(nn)aa teveho naau pachaareeai ||

As are the deeds done, so is the reputation one acquires.

ਐਸੀ ਕਲਾ ਨ ਖੇਡੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਗਇਆ ਹਾਰੀਐ ॥

ऐसी कला न खेडीऐ जितु दरगह गइआ हारीऐ ॥

Aisee kalaa na khedeeai jitu daragah gaiaa haareeai ||

So do not play such a game, which will bring you to ruin at the Court of the Lord.

ਪੜਿਆ ਅਤੈ ਓਮੀਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਅਗੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ॥

पड़िआ अतै ओमीआ वीचारु अगै वीचारीऐ ॥

Pa(rr)iaa atai omeeaa veechaaru agai veechaareeai ||

The accounts of the educated and the illiterate shall be judged in the world hereafter.

ਮੁਹਿ ਚਲੈ ਸੁ ਅਗੈ ਮਾਰੀਐ ॥੧੨॥

मुहि चलै सु अगै मारीऐ ॥१२॥

Muhi chalai su agai maareeai ||12||

One who stubbornly follows his own mind shall suffer in the world hereafter. ||12||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੁ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਰਥੁ ਇਕੁ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥

नानक मेरु सरीर का इकु रथु इकु रथवाहु ॥

Naanak meru sareer kaa iku rathu iku rathavaahu ||

O Nanak, the soul of the body has one chariot and one charioteer.

ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਫੇਰਿ ਵਟਾਈਅਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਤਾਹਿ ॥

जुगु जुगु फेरि वटाईअहि गिआनी बुझहि ताहि ॥

Jugu jugu pheri vataaeeahi giaanee bujhahi taahi ||

In age after age they change; the spiritually wise understand this.

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਰਥੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥

सतजुगि रथु संतोख का धरमु अगै रथवाहु ॥

Satajugi rathu santtokh kaa dharamu agai rathavaahu ||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, contentment was the chariot and righteousness the charioteer.

ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਰਥੁ ਜਤੈ ਕਾ ਜੋਰੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥

त्रेतै रथु जतै का जोरु अगै रथवाहु ॥

Tretai rathu jatai kaa joru agai rathavaahu ||

In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yuga, celibacy was the chariot and power the charioteer.

ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਰਥੁ ਤਪੈ ਕਾ ਸਤੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥

दुआपुरि रथु तपै का सतु अगै रथवाहु ॥

Duaapuri rathu tapai kaa satu agai rathavaahu ||

In the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, penance was the chariot and truth the charioteer.

ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਰਥੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥੧॥

कलजुगि रथु अगनि का कूड़ु अगै रथवाहु ॥१॥

Kalajugi rathu agani kaa koo(rr)u agai rathavaahu ||1||

In the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, fire is the chariot and falsehood the charioteer. ||1||

ਸਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਸੇਤੰਬਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਆਛੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹੇ ॥

साम कहै सेत्मबरु सुआमी सच महि आछै साचि रहे ॥

Saam kahai setambbaru suaamee sach mahi aachhai saachi rahe ||

The Sama Veda says that the Lord Master is robed in white; in the Age of Truth, everyone desired Truth, abided in Truth,

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

सभु को सचि समावै ॥

Sabhu ko sachi samaavai ||

and was merged in the Truth.

ਰਿਗੁ ਕਹੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

रिगु कहै रहिआ भरपूरि ॥

Rigu kahai rahiaa bharapoori ||

The Rig Veda says that God is permeating and pervading everywhere;

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਰੁ ॥

राम नामु देवा महि सूरु ॥

Raam naamu devaa mahi sooru ||

Among the deities, the Lord's Name is the most exalted.

ਨਾਇ ਲਇਐ ਪਰਾਛਤ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

नाइ लइऐ पराछत जाहि ॥

Naai laiai paraachhat jaahi ||

Chanting the Name, sins depart;

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਉ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

नानक तउ मोखंतरु पाहि ॥

Naanak tau mokhanttaru paahi ||

O Nanak, then, one obtains salvation.

ਜੁਜ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਛਲੀ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾਵਲਿ ਕਾਨੑ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨੁ ਜਾਦਮੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

जुज महि जोरि छली चंद्रावलि कान्ह क्रिसनु जादमु भइआ ॥

Juj mahi jori chhalee chanddraavali kaanh krisanu jaadamu bhaiaa ||

In the Jujar Veda, Kaan Krishna of the Yaadva tribe seduced Chandraavali by force.

ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਗੋਪੀ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਬਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਆ ॥

पारजातु गोपी लै आइआ बिंद्राबन महि रंगु कीआ ॥

Paarajaatu gopee lai aaiaa binddraaban mahi ranggu keeaa ||

He brought the Elysian Tree for his milk-maid, and revelled in Brindaaban.

ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਅਥਰਬਣੁ ਹੂਆ ਨਾਉ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਅਲਹੁ ਭਇਆ ॥

कलि महि बेदु अथरबणु हूआ नाउ खुदाई अलहु भइआ ॥

Kali mahi bedu atharaba(nn)u hooaa naau khudaaee alahu bhaiaa ||

In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Atharva Veda became prominent; Allah became the Name of God.

ਨੀਲ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਲੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਤੁਰਕ ਪਠਾਣੀ ਅਮਲੁ ਕੀਆ ॥

नील बसत्र ले कपड़े पहिरे तुरक पठाणी अमलु कीआ ॥

Neel basatr le kapa(rr)e pahire turak pathaa(nn)ee amalu keeaa ||

Men began to wear blue robes and garments; Turks and Pat'haans assumed power.

ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਹੋਏ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥

चारे वेद होए सचिआर ॥

Chaare ved hoe sachiaar ||

The four Vedas each claim to be true.

ਪੜਹਿ ਗੁਣਹਿ ਤਿਨੑ ਚਾਰ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥

पड़हि गुणहि तिन्ह चार वीचार ॥

Pa(rr)ahi gu(nn)ahi tinh chaar veechaar ||

Reading and studying them, four doctrines are found.

ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਨੀਚੁ ਸਦਾਏ ॥

भाउ भगति करि नीचु सदाए ॥

Bhaau bhagati kari neechu sadaae ||

With loving devotional worship, abiding in humility,

ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੨॥

तउ नानक मोखंतरु पाए ॥२॥

Tau naanak mokhanttaru paae ||2||

O Nanak, salvation is attained. ||2||

सतिगुर विटहु वारिआ जितु मिलिऐ खसमु समालिआ ॥

Satigur vitahu vaariaa jitu miliai khasamu samaaliaa ||

I am a sacrifice to the True Guru; meeting Him, I have come to cherish the Lord Master.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਇਨੑੀ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥

जिनि करि उपदेसु गिआन अंजनु दीआ इन्ही नेत्री जगतु निहालिआ ॥

Jini kari upadesu giaan anjjanu deeaa inhee netree jagatu nihaaliaa ||

He has taught me and given me the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, and with these eyes, I behold the world.

ਖਸਮੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਸੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥

खसमु छोडि दूजै लगे डुबे से वणजारिआ ॥

Khasamu chhodi doojai lage dube se va(nn)ajaariaa ||

Those dealers who abandon their Lord and Master and attach themselves to another, are drowned.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥

सतिगुरू है बोहिथा विरलै किनै वीचारिआ ॥

Satiguroo hai bohithaa viralai kinai veechaariaa ||

The True Guru is the boat, but few are those who realize this.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੩॥

करि किरपा पारि उतारिआ ॥१३॥

Kari kirapaa paari utaariaa ||13||

Granting His Grace, He carries them across. ||13||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸਿੰਮਲ ਰੁਖੁ ਸਰਾਇਰਾ ਅਤਿ ਦੀਰਘ ਅਤਿ ਮੁਚੁ ॥

सिमल रुखु सराइरा अति दीरघ अति मुचु ॥

Simmmal rukhu saraairaa ati deeragh ati muchu ||

The simmal tree is straight as an arrow; it is very tall, and very thick.

ਓਇ ਜਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਆਸ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ॥

ओइ जि आवहि आस करि जाहि निरासे कितु ॥

Oi ji aavahi aas kari jaahi niraase kitu ||

But those birds which visit it hopefully, depart disappointed.

ਫਲ ਫਿਕੇ ਫੁਲ ਬਕਬਕੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਪਤ ॥

फल फिके फुल बकबके कमि न आवहि पत ॥

Phal phike phul bakabake kammi na aavahi pat ||

Its fruits are tasteless, its flowers are nauseating, and its leaves are useless.

ਮਿਠਤੁ ਨੀਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਤਤੁ ॥

मिठतु नीवी नानका गुण चंगिआईआ ततु ॥

Mithatu neevee naanakaa gu(nn) changgiaaeeaa tatu ||

Sweetness and humility, O Nanak, are the essence of virtue and goodness.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਵੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਨਿਵੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

सभु को निवै आप कउ पर कउ निवै न कोइ ॥

Sabhu ko nivai aap kau par kau nivai na koi ||

Everyone bows down to himself; no one bows down to another.

ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੂ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਨਿਵੈ ਸੁ ਗਉਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

धरि ताराजू तोलीऐ निवै सु गउरा होइ ॥

Dhari taaraajoo toleeai nivai su gauraa hoi ||

When something is placed on the balancing scale and weighed, the side which descends is heavier.

ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਦੂਣਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਜੋ ਹੰਤਾ ਮਿਰਗਾਹਿ ॥

अपराधी दूणा निवै जो हंता मिरगाहि ॥

Aparaadhee doo(nn)aa nivai jo hanttaa miragaahi ||

The sinner, like the deer hunter, bows down twice as much.

ਸੀਸਿ ਨਿਵਾਇਐ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਕੁਸੁਧੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

सीसि निवाइऐ किआ थीऐ जा रिदै कुसुधे जाहि ॥१॥

Seesi nivaaiai kiaa theeai jaa ridai kusudhe jaahi ||1||

But what can be achieved by bowing the head, when the heart is impure? ||1||

ਪੜਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥

पड़ि पुसतक संधिआ बादं ॥

Pa(rr)i pusatak sanddhiaa baadann ||

You read your books and say your prayers, and then engage in debate;

ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥

सिल पूजसि बगुल समाधं ॥

Sil poojasi bagul samaadhann ||

You worship stones and sit like a stork, pretending to be in Samaadhi.

ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਭੂਖਣ ਸਾਰੰ ॥

मुखि झूठ बिभूखण सारं ॥

Mukhi jhooth bibhookha(nn) saarann ||

With your mouth you utter falsehood, and you adorn yourself with precious decorations;

ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥

त्रैपाल तिहाल बिचारं ॥

Traipaal tihaal bichaarann ||

You recite the three lines of the Gayatri three times a day.

ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥

गलि माला तिलकु लिलाटं ॥

Gali maalaa tilaku lilaatann ||

Around your neck is a rosary, and on your forehead is a sacred mark;

ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥

दुइ धोती बसत्र कपाटं ॥

Dui dhotee basatr kapaatann ||

Upon your head is a turban, and you wear two loin cloths.

ਜੇ ਜਾਣਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥

जे जाणसि ब्रहमं करमं ॥

Je jaa(nn)asi brhamann karamann ||

If you knew the nature of God,

ਸਭਿ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚਉ ਕਰਮੰ ॥

सभि फोकट निसचउ करमं ॥

Sabhi phokat nisachau karamann ||

You would know that all of these beliefs and rituals are in vain.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

कहु नानक निहचउ धिआवै ॥

Kahu naanak nihachau dhiaavai ||

Says Nanak, meditate with deep faith;

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

विणु सतिगुर वाट न पावै ॥२॥

Vi(nn)u satigur vaat na paavai ||2||

Without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ||2||

ਕਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਛਡਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥

कपड़ु रूपु सुहावणा छडि दुनीआ अंदरि जावणा ॥

Kapa(rr)u roopu suhaava(nn)aa chhadi duneeaa anddari jaava(nn)aa ||

Abandoning the world of beauty, and beautiful clothes, one must depart.

ਮੰਦਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥

मंदा चंगा आपणा आपे ही कीता पावणा ॥

Manddaa changgaa aapa(nn)aa aape hee keetaa paava(nn)aa ||

He obtains the rewards of his good and bad deeds.

ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀਏ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਰਾਹਿ ਭੀੜੈ ਅਗੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥

हुकम कीए मनि भावदे राहि भीड़ै अगै जावणा ॥

Hukam keee mani bhaavade raahi bhee(rr)ai agai jaava(nn)aa ||

He may issue whatever commands he wishes, but he shall have to take to the narrow path hereafter.

ਨੰਗਾ ਦੋਜਕਿ ਚਾਲਿਆ ਤਾ ਦਿਸੈ ਖਰਾ ਡਰਾਵਣਾ ॥

नंगा दोजकि चालिआ ता दिसै खरा डरावणा ॥

Nanggaa dojaki chaaliaa taa disai kharaa daraava(nn)aa ||

He goes to hell naked, and he looks hideous then.

ਕਰਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਣਾ ॥੧੪॥

करि अउगण पछोतावणा ॥१४॥

Kari auga(nn) pachhotaava(nn)aa ||14||

He regrets the sins he committed. ||14||

ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਤੁ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤੁ ਵਟੁ ॥

दइआ कपाह संतोखु सूतु जतु गंढी सतु वटु ॥

Daiaa kapaah santtokhu sootu jatu ganddhee satu vatu ||

Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist.

ਏਹੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤੁ ॥

एहु जनेऊ जीअ का हई त पाडे घतु ॥

Ehu janeu jeea kaa haee ta paade ghatu ||

This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.

ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਨ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

ना एहु तुटै न मलु लगै ना एहु जलै न जाइ ॥

Naa ehu tutai na malu lagai naa ehu jalai na jaai ||

It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥

धंनु सु माणस नानका जो गलि चले पाइ ॥

Dhannu su maa(nn)as naanakaa jo gali chale paai ||

Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks.

ਚਉਕੜਿ ਮੁਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਬਹਿ ਚਉਕੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

चउकड़ि मुलि अणाइआ बहि चउकै पाइआ ॥

Chauka(rr)i muli a(nn)aaiaa bahi chaukai paaiaa ||

You buy the thread for a few shells, and seated in your enclosure, you put it on.

ਸਿਖਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਚੜਾਈਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਥਿਆ ॥

सिखा कंनि चड़ाईआ गुरु ब्राहमणु थिआ ॥

Sikhaa kanni cha(rr)aaeeaa guru braahama(nn)u thiaa ||

Whispering instructions into others' ears, the Brahmin becomes a guru.

ਓਹੁ ਮੁਆ ਓਹੁ ਝੜਿ ਪਇਆ ਵੇਤਗਾ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥

ओहु मुआ ओहु झड़ि पइआ वेतगा गइआ ॥१॥

Ohu muaa ohu jha(rr)i paiaa vetagaa gaiaa ||1||

But he dies, and the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਲਖ ਚੋਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਲਖ ਗਾਲਿ ॥

लख चोरीआ लख जारीआ लख कूड़ीआ लख गालि ॥

Lakh choreeaa lakh jaareeaa lakh koo(rr)eeaa lakh gaali ||

He commits thousands of robberies, thousands of acts of adultery, thousands of falsehoods and thousands of abuses.

ਲਖ ਠਗੀਆ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

लख ठगीआ पहिनामीआ राति दिनसु जीअ नालि ॥

Lakh thageeaa pahinaameeaa raati dinasu jeea naali ||

He practices thousands of deceptions and secret deeds, night and day, against his fellow beings.

ਤਗੁ ਕਪਾਹਹੁ ਕਤੀਐ ਬਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਣੁ ਵਟੇ ਆਇ ॥

तगु कपाहहु कतीऐ बाम्हणु वटे आइ ॥

Tagu kapaahahu kateeai baamh(nn)u vate aai ||

The thread is spun from cotton, and the Brahmin comes and twists it.

ਕੁਹਿ ਬਕਰਾ ਰਿੰਨੑਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

कुहि बकरा रिंन्हि खाइआ सभु को आखै पाइ ॥

Kuhi bakaraa rinnhi khaaiaa sabhu ko aakhai paai ||

The goat is killed, cooked and eaten, and everyone then says, ""Put on the sacred thread.""

ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਸੁਟੀਐ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ॥

होइ पुराणा सुटीऐ भी फिरि पाईऐ होरु ॥

Hoi puraa(nn)aa suteeai bhee phiri paaeeai horu ||

When it wears out, it is thrown away, and another one is put on.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਤਗਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਰੁ ॥੨॥

नानक तगु न तुटई जे तगि होवै जोरु ॥२॥

Naanak tagu na tutaee je tagi hovai joru ||2||

O Nanak, the thread would not break, if it had any real strength. ||2||

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੂਤੁ ॥

नाइ मंनिऐ पति ऊपजै सालाही सचु सूतु ॥

Naai manniai pati upajai saalaahee sachu sootu ||

Believing in the Name, honor is obtained. The Lord's Praise is the true sacred thread.

ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥

दरगह अंदरि पाईऐ तगु न तूटसि पूत ॥३॥

Daragah anddari paaeeai tagu na tootasi poot ||3||

Such a sacred thread is worn in the Court of the Lord; it shall never break. ||3||

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

तगु न इंद्री तगु न नारी ॥

Tagu na ianddree tagu na naaree ||

There is no sacred thread for the sexual organ, and no thread for woman.

ਭਲਕੇ ਥੁਕ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਦਾੜੀ ॥

भलके थुक पवै नित दाड़ी ॥

Bhalake thuk pavai nit daa(rr)ee ||

The man's beard is spat upon daily.

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਹਥੀ ॥

तगु न पैरी तगु न हथी ॥

Tagu na pairee tagu na hathee ||

There is no sacred thread for the feet, and no thread for the hands;

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਅਖੀ ॥

तगु न जिहवा तगु न अखी ॥

Tagu na jihavaa tagu na akhee ||

No thread for the tongue, and no thread for the eyes.

ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥

वेतगा आपे वतै ॥

Vetagaa aape vatai ||

The Brahmin himself goes to the world hereafter without a sacred thread.

ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥

वटि धागे अवरा घतै ॥

Vati dhaage avaraa ghatai ||

Twisting the threads, he puts them on others.

ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥

लै भाड़ि करे वीआहु ॥

Lai bhaa(rr)i kare veeaahu ||

He takes payment for performing marriages;

ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲੁ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

कढि कागलु दसे राहु ॥

Kadhi kaagalu dase raahu ||

Reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way.

ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ॥

सुणि वेखहु लोका एहु विडाणु ॥

Su(nn)i vekhahu lokaa ehu vidaa(nn)u ||

Hear, and see, O people, this wondrous thing.

ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪॥

मनि अंधा नाउ सुजाणु ॥४॥

Mani anddhaa naau sujaa(nn)u ||4||

He is mentally blind, and yet his name is wisdom. ||4||

Pauree:

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਸੀ ॥

साहिबु होइ दइआलु किरपा करे ता साई कार कराइसी ॥

Saahibu hoi daiaalu kirapaa kare taa saaee kaar karaaisee ||

One, upon whom the Merciful Lord bestows His Grace, performs His service.

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ॥

सो सेवकु सेवा करे जिस नो हुकमु मनाइसी ॥

So sevaku sevaa kare jis no hukamu manaaisee ||

That servant, whom the Lord causes to obey the Order of His Will, serves Him.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥

हुकमि मंनिऐ होवै परवाणु ता खसमै का महलु पाइसी ॥

Hukami manniai hovai paravaa(nn)u taa khasamai kaa mahalu paaisee ||

Obeying the Order of His Will, he becomes acceptable, and then, he obtains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਹੁ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥

खसमै भावै सो करे मनहु चिंदिआ सो फलु पाइसी ॥

Khasamai bhaavai so kare manahu chinddiaa so phalu paaisee ||

One who acts to please His Lord and Master, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires.

ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥੧੫॥

ता दरगह पैधा जाइसी ॥१५॥

Taa daragah paidhaa jaaisee ||15||

Then, he goes to the Court of the Lord, wearing robes of honor. ||15||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोक मः १ ॥

Salok M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਗਊ ਬਿਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਉ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਰਿ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

गऊ बिराहमण कउ करु लावहु गोबरि तरणु न जाई ॥

Gau biraahama(nn) kau karu laavahu gobari tara(nn)u na jaaee ||

They tax the cows and the Brahmins, but the cow-dung they apply to their kitchen will not save them.

ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਧਾਨੁ ਮਲੇਛਾਂ ਖਾਈ ॥

धोती टिका तै जपमाली धानु मलेछां खाई ॥

Dhotee tikaa tai japamaalee dhaanu malechhaan khaaee ||

They wear their loin cloths, apply ritual frontal marks to their foreheads, and carry their rosaries, but they eat food with the Muslims.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਰਕਾ ਭਾਈ ॥

अंतरि पूजा पड़हि कतेबा संजमु तुरका भाई ॥

Anttari poojaa pa(rr)ahi katebaa sanjjamu turakaa bhaaee ||

O Siblings of Destiny, you perform devotional worship indoors, but read the Islamic sacred texts, and adopt the Muslim way of life.

ਛੋਡੀਲੇ ਪਾਖੰਡਾ ॥

छोडीले पाखंडा ॥

Chhodeele paakhanddaa ||

Renounce your hypocrisy!

ਨਾਮਿ ਲਇਐ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ॥੧॥

नामि लइऐ जाहि तरंदा ॥१॥

Naami laiai jaahi taranddaa ||1||

Taking the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you shall swim across. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥

माणस खाणे करहि निवाज ॥

Maa(nn)as khaa(nn)e karahi nivaaj ||

The man-eaters say their prayers.

ਛੁਰੀ ਵਗਾਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗ ॥

छुरी वगाइनि तिन गलि ताग ॥

Chhuree vagaaini tin gali taag ||

Those who wield the knife wear the sacred thread around their necks.

ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥

तिन घरि ब्रहमण पूरहि नाद ॥

Tin ghari brhama(nn) poorahi naad ||

In their homes, the Brahmins sound the conch.

ਉਨੑਾ ਭਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਓਈ ਸਾਦ ॥

उन्हा भि आवहि ओई साद ॥

Unhaa bhi aavahi oee saad ||

They too have the same taste.

ਕੂੜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ी रासि कूड़ा वापारु ॥

Koo(rr)ee raasi koo(rr)aa vaapaaru ||

False is their capital, and false is their trade.

ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥

कूड़ु बोलि करहि आहारु ॥

Koo(rr)u boli karahi aahaaru ||

Speaking falsehood, they take their food.

ਸਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

सरम धरम का डेरा दूरि ॥

Saram dharam kaa deraa doori ||

The home of modesty and Dharma is far from them.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

नानक कूड़ु रहिआ भरपूरि ॥

Naanak koo(rr)u rahiaa bharapoori ||

O Nanak, they are totally permeated with falsehood.

ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੇੜਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਖਾਈ ॥

मथै टिका तेड़ि धोती कखाई ॥

Mathai tikaa te(rr)i dhotee kakhaaee ||

The sacred marks are on their foreheads, and the saffron loin-cloths are around their waists;

ਹਥਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਸਾਈ ॥

हथि छुरी जगत कासाई ॥

Hathi chhuree jagat kaasaaee ||

In their hands they hold the knives - they are the butchers of the world!

ਨੀਲ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

नील वसत्र पहिरि होवहि परवाणु ॥

Neel vasatr pahiri hovahi paravaa(nn)u ||

Wearing blue robes, they seek the approval of the Muslim rulers.

ਮਲੇਛ ਧਾਨੁ ਲੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥

मलेछ धानु ले पूजहि पुराणु ॥

Malechh dhaanu le poojahi puraa(nn)u ||

Accepting bread from the Muslim rulers, they still worship the Puraanas.

ਅਭਾਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਬਕਰਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥

अभाखिआ का कुठा बकरा खाणा ॥

Abhaakhiaa kaa kuthaa bakaraa khaa(nn)aa ||

They eat the meat of the goats, killed after the Muslim prayers are read over them,

ਚਉਕੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

चउके उपरि किसै न जाणा ॥

Chauke upari kisai na jaa(nn)aa ||

But they do not allow anyone else to enter their kitchen areas.

ਦੇ ਕੈ ਚਉਕਾ ਕਢੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

दे कै चउका कढी कार ॥

De kai chaukaa kadhee kaar ||

They draw lines around them, plastering the ground with cow-dung.

ਉਪਰਿ ਆਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥

उपरि आइ बैठे कूड़िआर ॥

Upari aai baithe koo(rr)iaar ||

The false come and sit within them.

ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ਵੇ ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ॥

मतु भिटै वे मतु भिटै ॥

Matu bhitai ve matu bhitai ||

They cry out, ""Do not touch our food,

ਇਹੁ ਅੰਨੁ ਅਸਾਡਾ ਫਿਟੈ ॥

इहु अंनु असाडा फिटै ॥

Ihu annu asaadaa phitai ||

this food of ours will be polluted!

ਤਨਿ ਫਿਟੈ ਫੇੜ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

तनि फिटै फेड़ करेनि ॥

Tani phitai phe(rr) kareni ||

But with their polluted bodies, they commit evil deeds.

ਮਨਿ ਜੂਠੈ ਚੁਲੀ ਭਰੇਨਿ ॥

मनि जूठै चुली भरेनि ॥

Mani joothai chulee bhareni ||

With filthy minds, they try to cleanse their mouths.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

कहु नानक सचु धिआईऐ ॥

Kahu naanak sachu dhiaaeeai ||

Says Nanak, meditate on the True Lord.

ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

सुचि होवै ता सचु पाईऐ ॥२॥

Suchi hovai taa sachu paaeeai ||2||

If you are pure, you will obtain the True Lord. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਚਿਤੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਵੇਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਹੇਠਿ ਚਲਾਇਦਾ ॥

चितै अंदरि सभु को वेखि नदरी हेठि चलाइदा ॥

Chitai anddari sabhu ko vekhi nadaree hethi chalaaidaa ||

All are within Your mind; You see and move them under Your Glance of Grace, O Lord.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥

आपे दे वडिआईआ आपे ही करम कराइदा ॥

Aape de vadiaaeeaa aape hee karam karaaidaa ||

You Yourself grant them glory, and You Yourself cause them to act.

ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡਾ ਵਡ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਸਿਰੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥

वडहु वडा वड मेदनी सिरे सिरि धंधै लाइदा ॥

Vadahu vadaa vad medanee sire siri dhanddhai laaidaa ||

The Lord is the greatest of the great; great is His world. He enjoins all to their tasks.

ਨਦਰਿ ਉਪਠੀ ਜੇ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਲਤਾਨਾ ਘਾਹੁ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥

नदरि उपठी जे करे सुलताना घाहु कराइदा ॥

Nadari upathee je kare sulataanaa ghaahu karaaidaa ||

If he should cast an angry glance, He can transform kings into blades of grass.

ਦਰਿ ਮੰਗਨਿ ਭਿਖ ਨ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥

दरि मंगनि भिख न पाइदा ॥१६॥

Dari manggani bhikh na paaidaa ||16||

Even though they may beg from door to door, no one will give them charity. ||16||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਜੇ ਮੋਹਾਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਦੇਇ ॥

जे मोहाका घरु मुहै घरु मुहि पितरी देइ ॥

Je mohaakaa gharu muhai gharu muhi pitaree dei ||

The thief robs a house, and offers the stolen goods to his ancestors.

ਅਗੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਤਰੀ ਚੋਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

अगै वसतु सिञाणीऐ पितरी चोर करेइ ॥

Agai vasatu si(ny)aa(nn)eeai pitaree chor karei ||

In the world hereafter, this is recognized, and his ancestors are considered thieves as well.

ਵਢੀਅਹਿ ਹਥ ਦਲਾਲ ਕੇ ਮੁਸਫੀ ਏਹ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

वढीअहि हथ दलाल के मुसफी एह करेइ ॥

Vadheeahi hath dalaal ke musaphee eh karei ||

The hands of the go-between are cut off; this is the Lord's justice.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗੈ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿ ਖਟੇ ਘਾਲੇ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥

नानक अगै सो मिलै जि खटे घाले देइ ॥१॥

Naanak agai so milai ji khate ghaale dei ||1||

O Nanak, in the world hereafter, that alone is received, which one gives to the needy from his own earnings and labor. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

ਜਿਉ ਜੋਰੂ ਸਿਰਨਾਵਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥

जिउ जोरू सिरनावणी आवै वारो वार ॥

Jiu joroo siranaava(nn)ee aavai vaaro vaar ||

As a woman has her periods, month after month,

ਜੂਠੇ ਜੂਠਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

जूठे जूठा मुखि वसै नित नित होइ खुआरु ॥

Joothe joothaa mukhi vasai nit nit hoi khuaaru ||

So does falsehood dwell in the mouth of the false; they suffer forever, again and again.

ਸੂਚੇ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਜਿ ਪਿੰਡਾ ਧੋਇ ॥

सूचे एहि न आखीअहि बहनि जि पिंडा धोइ ॥

Sooche ehi na aakheeahi bahani ji pinddaa dhoi ||

They are not called pure, who sit down after merely washing their bodies.

ਸੂਚੇ ਸੇਈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

सूचे सेई नानका जिन मनि वसिआ सोइ ॥२॥

Sooche seee naanakaa jin mani vasiaa soi ||2||

Only they are pure, O Nanak, within whose minds the Lord abides. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਤੁਰੇ ਪਲਾਣੇ ਪਉਣ ਵੇਗ ਹਰ ਰੰਗੀ ਹਰਮ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥

तुरे पलाणे पउण वेग हर रंगी हरम सवारिआ ॥

Ture palaa(nn)e pau(nn) veg har ranggee haram savaariaa ||

With saddled horses, as fast as the wind, and harems decorated in every way;

ਕੋਠੇ ਮੰਡਪ ਮਾੜੀਆ ਲਾਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਸਾਰਿਆ ॥

कोठे मंडप माड़ीआ लाइ बैठे करि पासारिआ ॥

Kothe manddap maa(rr)eeaa laai baithe kari paasaariaa ||

In houses and pavilions and lofty mansions, they dwell, making ostentatious shows.

ਚੀਜ ਕਰਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

चीज करनि मनि भावदे हरि बुझनि नाही हारिआ ॥

Cheej karani mani bhaavade hari bujhani naahee haariaa ||

They act out their minds' desires, but they do not understand the Lord, and so they are ruined.

ਕਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਸਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਵੇਖਿ ਮਹਲਤਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥

करि फुरमाइसि खाइआ वेखि महलति मरणु विसारिआ ॥

Kari phuramaaisi khaaiaa vekhi mahalati mara(nn)u visaariaa ||

Asserting their authority, they eat, and beholding their mansions, they forget about death.

ਜਰੁ ਆਈ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੭॥

जरु आई जोबनि हारिआ ॥१७॥

Jaru aaee jobani haariaa ||17||

But old age comes, and youth is lost. ||17||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

जे करि सूतकु मंनीऐ सभ तै सूतकु होइ ॥

Je kari sootaku manneeai sabh tai sootaku hoi ||

If one accepts the concept of impurity, then there is impurity everywhere.

ਗੋਹੇ ਅਤੈ ਲਕੜੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੀੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

गोहे अतै लकड़ी अंदरि कीड़ा होइ ॥

Gohe atai laka(rr)ee anddari kee(rr)aa hoi ||

In cow-dung and wood there are worms.

ਜੇਤੇ ਦਾਣੇ ਅੰਨ ਕੇ ਜੀਆ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

जेते दाणे अंन के जीआ बाझु न कोइ ॥

Jete daa(nn)e ann ke jeeaa baajhu na koi ||

As many as are the grains of corn, none is without life.

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

पहिला पाणी जीउ है जितु हरिआ सभु कोइ ॥

Pahilaa paa(nn)ee jeeu hai jitu hariaa sabhu koi ||

First, there is life in the water, by which everything else is made green.

ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਪਵੈ ਰਸੋਇ ॥

सूतकु किउ करि रखीऐ सूतकु पवै रसोइ ॥

Sootaku kiu kari rakheeai sootaku pavai rasoi ||

How can it be protected from impurity? It touches our own kitchen.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਏਵ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਉਤਾਰੇ ਧੋਇ ॥੧॥

नानक सूतकु एव न उतरै गिआनु उतारे धोइ ॥१॥

Naanak sootaku ev na utarai giaanu utaare dhoi ||1||

O Nanak, impurity cannot be removed in this way; it is washed away only by spiritual wisdom. ||1||

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕੂੜੁ ॥

मन का सूतकु लोभु है जिहवा सूतकु कूड़ु ॥

Man kaa sootaku lobhu hai jihavaa sootaku koo(rr)u ||

The impurity of the mind is greed, and the impurity of the tongue is falsehood.

ਅਖੀ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਪਰ ਧਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥

अखी सूतकु वेखणा पर त्रिअ पर धन रूपु ॥

Akhee sootaku vekha(nn)aa par tria par dhan roopu ||

The impurity of the eyes is to gaze upon the beauty of another man's wife, and his wealth.

ਕੰਨੀ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਕੰਨਿ ਪੈ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

कंनी सूतकु कंनि पै लाइतबारी खाहि ॥

Kannee sootaku kanni pai laaitabaaree khaahi ||

The impurity of the ears is to listen to the slander of others.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੰਸਾ ਆਦਮੀ ਬਧੇ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

नानक हंसा आदमी बधे जम पुरि जाहि ॥२॥

Naanak hanssaa aadamee badhe jam puri jaahi ||2||

O Nanak, the mortal's soul goes, bound and gagged to the city of Death. ||2||

ਸਭੋ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

सभो सूतकु भरमु है दूजै लगै जाइ ॥

Sabho sootaku bharamu hai doojai lagai jaai ||

All impurity comes from doubt and attachment to duality.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

जमणु मरणा हुकमु है भाणै आवै जाइ ॥

Jamma(nn)u mara(nn)aa hukamu hai bhaa(nn)ai aavai jaai ||

Birth and death are subject to the Command of the Lord's Will; through His Will we come and go.

ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਹੈ ਦਿਤੋਨੁ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸੰਬਾਹਿ ॥

खाणा पीणा पवित्रु है दितोनु रिजकु स्मबाहि ॥

Khaa(nn)aa pee(nn)aa pavitru hai ditonu rijaku sambbaahi ||

Eating and drinking are pure, since the Lord gives nourishment to all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਝਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

नानक जिन्ही गुरमुखि बुझिआ तिन्हा सूतकु नाहि ॥३॥

Naanak jinhee guramukhi bujhiaa tinhaa sootaku naahi ||3||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs, who understand the Lord, are not stained by impurity. ||3||

Pauree:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਡੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥

सतिगुरु वडा करि सालाहीऐ जिसु विचि वडीआ वडिआईआ ॥

Satiguru vadaa kari saalaaheeai jisu vichi vadeeaa vadiaaeeaa ||

Praise the Great True Guru; within Him is the greatest greatness.

ਸਹਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਈਆ ॥

सहि मेले ता नदरी आईआ ॥

Sahi mele taa nadaree aaeeaa ||

When the Lord causes us to meet the Guru, then we come to see them.

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਆ ॥

जा तिसु भाणा ता मनि वसाईआ ॥

Jaa tisu bhaa(nn)aa taa mani vasaaeeaa ||

When it pleases Him, they come to dwell in our minds.

ਕਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਥੁ ਧਰਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢੀਆ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ॥

करि हुकमु मसतकि हथु धरि विचहु मारि कढीआ बुरिआईआ ॥

Kari hukamu masataki hathu dhari vichahu maari kadheeaa buriaaeeaa ||

By His Command, when He places His hand on our foreheads, wickedness departs from within.

ਸਹਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਆ ॥੧੮॥

सहि तुठै नउ निधि पाईआ ॥१८॥

Sahi tuthai nau nidhi paaeeaa ||18||

When the Lord is thoroughly pleased, the nine treasures are obtained. ||18||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੁਚਾ ਆਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਚੈ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਇ ॥

पहिला सुचा आपि होइ सुचै बैठा आइ ॥

Pahilaa suchaa aapi hoi suchai baithaa aai ||

First, purifying himself, the Brahmin comes and sits in his purified enclosure.

ਸੁਚੇ ਅਗੈ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਭਿਟਿਓ ਜਾਇ ॥

सुचे अगै रखिओनु कोइ न भिटिओ जाइ ॥

Suche agai rakhionu koi na bhitio jaai ||

The pure foods, which no one else has touched, are placed before him.

ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜੇਵਿਆ ਲਗਾ ਪੜਣਿ ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥

सुचा होइ कै जेविआ लगा पड़णि सलोकु ॥

Suchaa hoi kai jeviaa lagaa pa(rr)a(nn)i saloku ||

Being purified, he takes his food, and begins to read his sacred verses.

ਕੁਹਥੀ ਜਾਈ ਸਟਿਆ ਕਿਸੁ ਏਹੁ ਲਗਾ ਦੋਖੁ ॥

कुहथी जाई सटिआ किसु एहु लगा दोखु ॥

Kuhathee jaaee satiaa kisu ehu lagaa dokhu ||

But it is then thrown into a filthy place - whose fault is this?

ਅੰਨੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਲੂਣੁ ਪੰਜਵਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਘਿਰਤੁ ॥

अंनु देवता पाणी देवता बैसंतरु देवता लूणु पंजवा पाइआ घिरतु ॥

Annu devataa paa(nn)ee devataa baisanttaru devataa loo(nn)u panjjavaa paaiaa ghiratu ||

The corn is sacred, the water is sacred; the fire and salt are sacred as well; when the fifth thing, the ghee, is added,

ਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਪਾਕੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ॥

ता होआ पाकु पवितु ॥

Taa hoaa paaku pavitu ||

Then the food becomes pure and sanctified.

ਪਾਪੀ ਸਿਉ ਤਨੁ ਗਡਿਆ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਈਆ ਤਿਤੁ ॥

पापी सिउ तनु गडिआ थुका पईआ तितु ॥

Paapee siu tanu gadiaa thukaa paeeaa titu ||

Coming into contact with the sinful human body, the food becomes so impure that is spat upon.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਚਰਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰਸ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

जितु मुखि नामु न ऊचरहि बिनु नावै रस खाहि ॥

Jitu mukhi naamu na ucharahi binu naavai ras khaahi ||

That mouth which does not chant the Naam, and without the Name eats tasty foods

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵੈ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਤਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

नानक एवै जाणीऐ तितु मुखि थुका पाहि ॥१॥

Naanak evai jaa(nn)eeai titu mukhi thukaa paahi ||1||

- O Nanak, know this: such a mouth is to be spat upon. ||1||

ਭੰਡਿ ਜੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਨਿੰਮੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਮੰਗਣੁ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥

भंडि जमीऐ भंडि निमीऐ भंडि मंगणु वीआहु ॥

Bhanddi jammeeai bhanddi nimmmeeai bhanddi mangga(nn)u veeaahu ||

From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to woman he is engaged and married.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੰਡਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

भंडहु होवै दोसती भंडहु चलै राहु ॥

Bhanddahu hovai dosatee bhanddahu chalai raahu ||

Woman becomes his friend; through woman, the future generations come.

ਭੰਡੁ ਮੁਆ ਭੰਡੁ ਭਾਲੀਐ ਭੰਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੰਧਾਨੁ ॥

भंडु मुआ भंडु भालीऐ भंडि होवै बंधानु ॥

Bhanddu muaa bhanddu bhaaleeai bhanddi hovai banddhaanu ||

When his woman dies, he seeks another woman; to woman he is bound.

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਤੁ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾਨ ॥

सो किउ मंदा आखीऐ जितु जमहि राजान ॥

So kiu manddaa aakheeai jitu jammahi raajaan ||

So why call her bad? From her, kings are born.

ਭੰਡਹੁ ਹੀ ਭੰਡੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

भंडहु ही भंडु ऊपजै भंडै बाझु न कोइ ॥

Bhanddahu hee bhanddu upajai bhanddai baajhu na koi ||

From woman, woman is born; without woman, there would be no one at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਭੰਡੈ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

नानक भंडै बाहरा एको सचा सोइ ॥

Naanak bhanddai baaharaa eko sachaa soi ||

O Nanak, only the True Lord is without a woman.

ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

जितु मुखि सदा सालाहीऐ भागा रती चारि ॥

Jitu mukhi sadaa saalaaheeai bhaagaa ratee chaari ||

That mouth which praises the Lord continually is blessed and beautiful.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

नानक ते मुख ऊजले तितु सचै दरबारि ॥२॥

Naanak te mukh ujale titu sachai darabaari ||2||

O Nanak, those faces shall be radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||2||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੋ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢੀਐ ॥

सभु को आखै आपणा जिसु नाही सो चुणि कढीऐ ॥

Sabhu ko aakhai aapa(nn)aa jisu naahee so chu(nn)i kadheeai ||

All call You their own, Lord; one who does not own You, is picked up and thrown away.

ਕੀਤਾ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਸੰਢੀਐ ॥

कीता आपो आपणा आपे ही लेखा संढीऐ ॥

Keetaa aapo aapa(nn)aa aape hee lekhaa sanddheeai ||

Everyone receives the rewards of his own actions; his account is adjusted accordingly.

ਜਾ ਰਹਣਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਐਤੁ ਜਗਿ ਤਾ ਕਾਇਤੁ ਗਾਰਬਿ ਹੰਢੀਐ ॥

जा रहणा नाही ऐतु जगि ता काइतु गारबि हंढीऐ ॥

Jaa raha(nn)aa naahee aitu jagi taa kaaitu gaarabi handdheeai ||

Since one is not destined to remain in this world anyway, why should he ruin himself in pride?

ਮੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਪੜਿ ਅਖਰੁ ਏਹੋ ਬੁਝੀਐ ॥

मंदा किसै न आखीऐ पड़ि अखरु एहो बुझीऐ ॥

Manddaa kisai na aakheeai pa(rr)i akharu eho bujheeai ||

Do not call anyone bad; read these words, and understand.

ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥

मूरखै नालि न लुझीऐ ॥१९॥

Moorakhai naali na lujheeai ||19||

Don't argue with fools. ||19||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਫਿਕੈ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

नानक फिकै बोलिऐ तनु मनु फिका होइ ॥

Naanak phikai boliai tanu manu phikaa hoi ||

O Nanak, speaking insipid words, the body and mind become insipid.

ਫਿਕੋ ਫਿਕਾ ਸਦੀਐ ਫਿਕੇ ਫਿਕੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

फिको फिका सदीऐ फिके फिकी सोइ ॥

Phiko phikaa sadeeai phike phikee soi ||

He is called the most insipid of the insipid; the most insipid of the insipid is his reputation.

ਫਿਕਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਟੀਐ ਮੁਹਿ ਥੁਕਾ ਫਿਕੇ ਪਾਇ ॥

फिका दरगह सटीऐ मुहि थुका फिके पाइ ॥

Phikaa daragah sateeai muhi thukaa phike paai ||

The insipid person is discarded in the Court of the Lord, and the insipid one's face is spat upon.
