ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਈ ਰਲੀ ਸਿਉ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥

प्रेमि बुलाई रली सिउ मन महि सबदु अनंदु ॥

Premi bulaaee ralee siu man mahi sabadu ananddu ||

My Beloved has summoned me with joyful caresses; my mind is filled with the bliss of the Shabad.

ਲਾਲਿ ਰਤੀ ਲਾਲੀ ਭਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਈ ਨਿਚਿੰਦੁ ॥੧੨॥

लालि रती लाली भई गुरमुखि भई निचिंदु ॥१२॥

Laali ratee laalee bhaee guramukhi bhaee nichinddu ||12||

Imbued with the Love of my Beloved, I have become Gurmukh, and carefree. ||12||


ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

लाहा नामु रतनु जपि सारु ॥

Laahaa naamu ratanu japi saaru ||

Chant the jewel of the Naam, and earn the profit of the Lord.

ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

लबु लोभु बुरा अहंकारु ॥

Labu lobhu buraa ahankkaaru ||

Greed, avarice, evil and egotism;

ਲਾੜੀ ਚਾੜੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੁ ॥

लाड़ी चाड़ी लाइतबारु ॥

Laa(rr)ee chaa(rr)ee laaitabaaru ||

slander, innuendo and gossip;

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥

मनमुखु अंधा मुगधु गवारु ॥

Manamukhu anddhaa mugadhu gavaaru ||

The self-willed manmukh is blind, foolish and ignorant.

ਲਾਹੇ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਿ ॥

लाहे कारणि आइआ जगि ॥

Laahe kaara(nn)i aaiaa jagi ||

For the sake of earning the profit of the Lord, the mortal comes into the world.

ਹੋਇ ਮਜੂਰੁ ਗਇਆ ਠਗਾਇ ਠਗਿ ॥

होइ मजूरु गइआ ठगाइ ठगि ॥

Hoi majooru gaiaa thagaai thagi ||

But he becomes a mere slave laborer, and is mugged by the mugger, Maya.

ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥

लाहा नामु पूंजी वेसाहु ॥

Laahaa naamu poonjjee vesaahu ||

One who earns the profit of the Naam, with the capital of faith,

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥੧੩॥

नानक सची पति सचा पातिसाहु ॥१३॥

Naanak sachee pati sachaa paatisaahu ||13||

O Nanak, is truly honored by the True Supreme King. ||13||


ਆਇ ਵਿਗੂਤਾ ਜਗੁ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ॥

आइ विगूता जगु जम पंथु ॥

Aai vigootaa jagu jam pantthu ||

The world is ruined on the path of Death.

ਆਈ ਨ ਮੇਟਣ ਕੋ ਸਮਰਥੁ ॥

आई न मेटण को समरथु ॥

Aaee na meta(nn) ko samarathu ||

No one has the power to erase Maya's influence.

ਆਥਿ ਸੈਲ ਨੀਚ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

आथि सैल नीच घरि होइ ॥

Aathi sail neech ghari hoi ||

If wealth visits the home of the lowliest clown,

ਆਥਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੋਇ ॥

आथि देखि निवै जिसु दोइ ॥

Aathi dekhi nivai jisu doi ||

Seeing that wealth, all pay their respects to him.

ਆਥਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥

आथि होइ ता मुगधु सिआना ॥

Aathi hoi taa mugadhu siaanaa ||

Even an idiot is thought of as clever, if he is rich.

ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥

भगति बिहूना जगु बउराना ॥

Bhagati bihoonaa jagu bauraanaa ||

Without devotional worship, the world is insane.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥

सभ महि वरतै एको सोइ ॥

Sabh mahi varatai eko soi ||

The One Lord is contained among all.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧੪॥

जिस नो किरपा करे तिसु परगटु होइ ॥१४॥

Jis no kirapaa kare tisu paragatu hoi ||14||

He reveals Himself, unto those whom He blesses with His Grace. ||14||


ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ॥

जुगि जुगि थापि सदा निरवैरु ॥

Jugi jugi thaapi sadaa niravairu ||

Throughout the ages, the Lord is eternally established; He has no vengeance.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਨਹੀ ਧੰਧਾ ਧੈਰੁ ॥

जनमि मरणि नही धंधा धैरु ॥

Janami mara(nn)i nahee dhanddhaa dhairu ||

He is not subject to birth and death; He is not entangled in worldly affairs.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥

जो दीसै सो आपे आपि ॥

Jo deesai so aape aapi ||

Whatever is seen, is the Lord Himself.

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਆਪੇ ਘਟ ਥਾਪਿ ॥

आपि उपाइ आपे घट थापि ॥

Aapi upaai aape ghat thaapi ||

Creating Himself, He establishes Himself in the heart.

ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਧੰਧੈ ਲੋਈ ॥

आपि अगोचरु धंधै लोई ॥

Aapi agocharu dhanddhai loee ||

He Himself is unfathomable; He links people to their affairs.

ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

जोग जुगति जगजीवनु सोई ॥

Jog jugati jagajeevanu soee ||

He is the Way of Yoga, the Life of the World.

ਕਰਿ ਆਚਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

करि आचारु सचु सुखु होई ॥

Kari aachaaru sachu sukhu hoee ||

Living a righteous lifestyle, true peace is found.

ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਵ ਹੋਈ ॥੧੫॥

नाम विहूणा मुकति किव होई ॥१५॥

Naam vihoo(nn)aa mukati kiv hoee ||15||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can anyone find liberation? ||15||


ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਰੋਧੁ ਸਰੀਰ ॥

विणु नावै वेरोधु सरीर ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai verodhu sareer ||

Without the Name, even one's own body is an enemy.

ਕਿਉ ਨ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਮਨ ਪੀਰ ॥

किउ न मिलहि काटहि मन पीर ॥

Kiu na milahi kaatahi man peer ||

Why not meet the Lord, and take away the pain of your mind?

ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਊ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

वाट वटाऊ आवै जाइ ॥

Vaat vataau aavai jaai ||

The traveler comes and goes along the highway.

ਕਿਆ ਲੇ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

किआ ले आइआ किआ पलै पाइ ॥

Kiaa le aaiaa kiaa palai paai ||

What did he bring when he came, and what will he take away when he goes?

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਤੋਟਾ ਸਭ ਥਾਇ ॥

विणु नावै तोटा सभ थाइ ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai totaa sabh thaai ||

Without the Name, one loses everywhere.

ਲਾਹਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਇ ॥

लाहा मिलै जा देइ बुझाइ ॥

Laahaa milai jaa dei bujhaai ||

The profit is earned, when the Lord grants understanding.

ਵਣਜੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਵਣਜੈ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥

वणजु वापारु वणजै वापारी ॥

Va(nn)aju vaapaaru va(nn)ajai vaapaaree ||

In merchandise and trade, the merchant is trading.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੈਸੀ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ॥੧੬॥

विणु नावै कैसी पति सारी ॥१६॥

Vi(nn)u naavai kaisee pati saaree ||16||

Without the Name, how can one find honor and nobility? ||16||


ਗੁਣ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

गुण वीचारे गिआनी सोइ ॥

Gu(nn) veechaare giaanee soi ||

One who contemplates the Lord's Virtues is spiritually wise.

ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुण महि गिआनु परापति होइ ॥

Gu(nn) mahi giaanu paraapati hoi ||

Through His Virtues, one receives spiritual wisdom.

ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

गुणदाता विरला संसारि ॥

Gu(nn)adaataa viralaa sanssaari ||

How rare in this world, is the Giver of virtue.

ਸਾਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

साची करणी गुर वीचारि ॥

Saachee kara(nn)ee gur veechaari ||

The True way of life comes through contemplation of the Guru.

ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

अगम अगोचरु कीमति नही पाइ ॥

Agam agocharu keemati nahee paai ||

The Lord is inaccessible and unfathomable. His worth cannot be estimated.

ਤਾ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਜਾ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

ता मिलीऐ जा लए मिलाइ ॥

Taa mileeai jaa lae milaai ||

They alone meet Him, whom the Lord causes to meet.

ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੇ ਨੀਤ ॥

गुणवंती गुण सारे नीत ॥

Gu(nn)avanttee gu(nn) saare neet ||

The virtuous soul bride continually contemplates His Virtues.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਮੀਤ ॥੧੭॥

नानक गुरमति मिलीऐ मीत ॥१७॥

Naanak guramati mileeai meet ||17||

O Nanak, following the Guru's Teachings, one meets the Lord, the true friend. ||17||


ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਗਾਲੈ ॥

कामु क्रोधु काइआ कउ गालै ॥

Kaamu krodhu kaaiaa kau gaalai ||

Unfulfilled sexual desire and unresolved anger waste the body away,

ਜਿਉ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਾ ਢਾਲੈ ॥

जिउ कंचन सोहागा ढालै ॥

Jiu kancchan sohaagaa dhaalai ||

As gold is dissolved by borax.

ਕਸਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਸਹੈ ਸੁ ਤਾਉ ॥

कसि कसवटी सहै सु ताउ ॥

Kasi kasavatee sahai su taau ||

The gold is touched to the touchstone, and tested by fire;

ਨਦਰਿ ਸਰਾਫ ਵੰਨੀ ਸਚੜਾਉ ॥

नदरि सराफ वंनी सचड़ाउ ॥

Nadari saraaph vannee sacha(rr)aau ||

When its pure color shows through, it is pleasing to the eye of the assayer.

ਜਗਤੁ ਪਸੂ ਅਹੰ ਕਾਲੁ ਕਸਾਈ ॥

जगतु पसू अहं कालु कसाई ॥

Jagatu pasoo ahann kaalu kasaaee ||

The world is a beast, and arrogant Death is the butcher.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

करि करतै करणी करि पाई ॥

Kari karatai kara(nn)ee kari paaee ||

The created beings of the Creator receive the karma of their actions.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

जिनि कीती तिनि कीमति पाई ॥

Jini keetee tini keemati paaee ||

He who created the world, knows its worth.

ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੮॥

होर किआ कहीऐ किछु कहणु न जाई ॥१८॥

Hor kiaa kaheeai kichhu kaha(nn)u na jaaee ||18||

What else can be said? There is nothing at all to say. ||18||


ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥

खोजत खोजत अम्रितु पीआ ॥

Khojat khojat ammmritu peeaa ||

Searching, searching, I drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਤਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥

खिमा गही मनु सतगुरि दीआ ॥

Khimaa gahee manu sataguri deeaa ||

I have adopted the way of tolerance, and given my mind to the True Guru.

ਖਰਾ ਖਰਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

खरा खरा आखै सभु कोइ ॥

Kharaa kharaa aakhai sabhu koi ||

Everyone calls himself true and genuine.

ਖਰਾ ਰਤਨੁ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੋਇ ॥

खरा रतनु जुग चारे होइ ॥

Kharaa ratanu jug chaare hoi ||

He alone is true, who obtains the jewel throughout the four ages.

ਖਾਤ ਪੀਅੰਤ ਮੂਏ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

खात पीअंत मूए नही जानिआ ॥

Khaat peeantt mooe nahee jaaniaa ||

Eating and drinking, one dies, but still does not know.

ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੂਏ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥

खिन महि मूए जा सबदु पछानिआ ॥

Khin mahi mooe jaa sabadu pachhaaniaa ||

He dies in an instant, when he realizes the Word of the Shabad.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਮਰਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥

असथिरु चीतु मरनि मनु मानिआ ॥

Asathiru cheetu marani manu maaniaa ||

His consciousness becomes permanently stable, and his mind accepts death.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੯॥

गुर किरपा ते नामु पछानिआ ॥१९॥

Gur kirapaa te naamu pachhaaniaa ||19||

By Guru's Grace, he realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||19||


ਗਗਨ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

गगन ग्मभीरु गगनंतरि वासु ॥

Gagan gambbheeru gagananttari vaasu ||

The Profound Lord dwells in the sky of the mind, the Tenth Gate;

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥

गुण गावै सुख सहजि निवासु ॥

Gu(nn) gaavai sukh sahaji nivaasu ||

Singing His Glorious Praises, one dwells in intuitive poise and peace.

ਗਇਆ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

गइआ न आवै आइ न जाइ ॥

Gaiaa na aavai aai na jaai ||

He does not go to come, or come to go.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

गुर परसादि रहै लिव लाइ ॥

Gur parasaadi rahai liv laai ||

By Guru's Grace, he remains lovingly focused on the Lord.

ਗਗਨੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਅਨਾਥੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ॥

गगनु अगमु अनाथु अजोनी ॥

Gaganu agammu anaathu ajonee ||

The Lord of the mind-sky is inaccessible, independent and beyond birth.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਗੋਨੀ ॥

असथिरु चीतु समाधि सगोनी ॥

Asathiru cheetu samaadhi sagonee ||

The most worthy Samaadhi is to keep the consciousness stable, focused on Him.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਨ ਜੂਨੀ ॥

हरि नामु चेति फिरि पवहि न जूनी ॥

Hari naamu cheti phiri pavahi na joonee ||

Remembering the Lord's Name, one is not subject to reincarnation.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੁ ਹੋਰ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨੀ ॥੨੦॥

गुरमति सारु होर नाम बिहूनी ॥२०॥

Guramati saaru hor naam bihoonee ||20||

The Guru's Teachings are the most Excellent; all other ways lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||20||


ਘਰ ਦਰ ਫਿਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥

घर दर फिरि थाकी बहुतेरे ॥

Ghar dar phiri thaakee bahutere ||

Wandering to countless doorsteps and homes, I have grown weary.

ਜਾਤਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

जाति असंख अंत नही मेरे ॥

Jaati asankkh antt nahee mere ||

My incarnations are countless, without limit.

ਕੇਤੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਧੀਆ ॥

केते मात पिता सुत धीआ ॥

Kete maat pitaa sut dheeaa ||

I have had so many mothers and fathers, sons and daughters.

ਕੇਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੂਆ ॥

केते गुर चेले फुनि हूआ ॥

Kete gur chele phuni hooaa ||

I have had so many gurus and disciples.

ਕਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੂਆ ॥

काचे गुर ते मुकति न हूआ ॥

Kaache gur te mukati na hooaa ||

Through a false guru, liberation is not found.

ਕੇਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥

केती नारि वरु एकु समालि ॥

Ketee naari varu eku samaali ||

There are so many brides of the One Husband Lord - consider this.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

गुरमुखि मरणु जीवणु प्रभ नालि ॥

Guramukhi mara(nn)u jeeva(nn)u prbh naali ||

The Gurmukh dies, and lives with God.

ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਢੂਢਿ ਘਰੈ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

दह दिस ढूढि घरै महि पाइआ ॥

Dah dis dhoodhi gharai mahi paaiaa ||

Searching in the ten directions, I found Him within my own home.

ਮੇਲੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੨੧॥

मेलु भइआ सतिगुरू मिलाइआ ॥२१॥

Melu bhaiaa satiguroo milaaiaa ||21||

I have met Him; the True Guru has led me to meet Him. ||21||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

गुरमुखि गावै गुरमुखि बोलै ॥

Guramukhi gaavai guramukhi bolai ||

The Gurmukh sings, and the Gurmukh speaks.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋੁਲਾਵੈ ਤੋਲੈ ॥

गुरमुखि तोलि तोलावै तोलै ॥

Guramukhi toli taolaavai tolai ||

The Gurmukh evaluates the value of the Lord, and inspires others to evaluate Him as well.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਨਿਸੰਗੁ ॥

गुरमुखि आवै जाइ निसंगु ॥

Guramukhi aavai jaai nisanggu ||

The Gurmukh comes and goes without fear.

ਪਰਹਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਜਲਾਇ ਕਲੰਕੁ ॥

परहरि मैलु जलाइ कलंकु ॥

Parahari mailu jalaai kalankku ||

His filth is taken away, and his stains are burnt off.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਦ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

गुरमुखि नाद बेद बीचारु ॥

Guramukhi naad bed beechaaru ||

The Gurmukh contemplates the sound current of the Naad for his Vedas.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਜਨੁ ਚਜੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥

गुरमुखि मजनु चजु अचारु ॥

Guramukhi majanu chaju achaaru ||

The Gurmukh's cleansing bath is the performance of good deeds.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

गुरमुखि सबदु अम्रितु है सारु ॥

Guramukhi sabadu ammmritu hai saaru ||

For the Gurmukh, the Shabad is the most excellent Ambrosial Nectar.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰੁ ॥੨੨॥

नानक गुरमुखि पावै पारु ॥२२॥

Naanak guramukhi paavai paaru ||22||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh crosses over. ||22||


ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ਨ ਰਹਈ ਠਾਇ ॥

चंचलु चीतु न रहई ठाइ ॥

Chancchalu cheetu na rahaee thaai ||

The fickle consciousness does not remain stable.

ਚੋਰੀ ਮਿਰਗੁ ਅੰਗੂਰੀ ਖਾਇ ॥

चोरी मिरगु अंगूरी खाइ ॥

Choree miragu anggooree khaai ||

The deer secretly nibbles at the green sprouts.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ਚੀਤ ॥

चरन कमल उर धारे चीत ॥

Charan kamal ur dhaare cheet ||

One who enshrines the Lord's lotus feet in his heart and consciousness

ਚਿਰੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਚੇਤਨੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤ ॥

चिरु जीवनु चेतनु नित नीत ॥

Chiru jeevanu chetanu nit neet ||

Lives long, always remembering the Lord.

ਚਿੰਤਤ ਹੀ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

चिंतत ही दीसै सभु कोइ ॥

Chinttat hee deesai sabhu koi ||

Everyone has worries and cares.

ਚੇਤਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਤਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

चेतहि एकु तही सुखु होइ ॥

Chetahi eku tahee sukhu hoi ||

He alone finds peace, who thinks of the One Lord.

ਚਿਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਰਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

चिति वसै राचै हरि नाइ ॥

Chiti vasai raachai hari naai ||

When the Lord dwells in the consciousness, and one is absorbed in the Lord's Name,

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨੩॥

मुकति भइआ पति सिउ घरि जाइ ॥२३॥

Mukati bhaiaa pati siu ghari jaai ||23||

One is liberated, and returns home with honor. ||23||


ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹ ਖੁਲੈ ਇਕ ਗੰਢਿ ॥

छीजै देह खुलै इक गंढि ॥

Chheejai deh khulai ik ganddhi ||

The body falls apart, when one knot is untied.

ਛੇਆ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਜਗਿ ਹੰਢਿ ॥

छेआ नित देखहु जगि हंढि ॥

Chheaa nit dekhahu jagi handdhi ||

Behold, the world is on the decline; it will be totally destroyed.

ਧੂਪ ਛਾਵ ਜੇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

धूप छाव जे सम करि जाणै ॥

Dhoop chhaav je sam kari jaa(nn)ai ||

Only one who looks alike upon sunshine and shade

ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥

बंधन काटि मुकति घरि आणै ॥

Banddhan kaati mukati ghari aa(nn)ai ||

Has his bonds shattered; he is liberated and returns home.

ਛਾਇਆ ਛੂਛੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥

छाइआ छूछी जगतु भुलाना ॥

Chhaaiaa chhoochhee jagatu bhulaanaa ||

Maya is empty and petty; she has defrauded the world.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਧੁਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ॥

लिखिआ किरतु धुरे परवाना ॥

Likhiaa kiratu dhure paravaanaa ||

Such destiny is pre-ordained by past actions.

ਛੀਜੈ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਜਰੂਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

छीजै जोबनु जरूआ सिरि कालु ॥

Chheejai jobanu jarooaa siri kaalu ||

Youth is wasting away; old age and death hover above the head.

ਕਾਇਆ ਛੀਜੈ ਭਈ ਸਿਬਾਲੁ ॥੨੪॥

काइआ छीजै भई सिबालु ॥२४॥

Kaaiaa chheejai bhaee sibaalu ||24||

The body falls apart, like algae upon the water. ||24||


ਜਾਪੈ ਆਪਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਇ ॥

जापै आपि प्रभू तिहु लोइ ॥

Jaapai aapi prbhoo tihu loi ||

God Himself appears throughout the three worlds.

ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

जुगि जुगि दाता अवरु न कोइ ॥

Jugi jugi daataa avaru na koi ||

Throughout the ages, He is the Great Giver; there is no other at all.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखहि राखु ॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhahi raakhu ||

As it pleases You, You protect and preserve us.

ਜਸੁ ਜਾਚਉ ਦੇਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਖੁ ॥

जसु जाचउ देवै पति साखु ॥

Jasu jaachau devai pati saakhu ||

I ask for the Lord's Praises, which bless me with honor and credit.

ਜਾਗਤੁ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਾ ॥

जागतु जागि रहा तुधु भावा ॥

Jaagatu jaagi rahaa tudhu bhaavaa ||

Remaining awake and aware, I am pleasing to You, O Lord.

ਜਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਸਮਾਵਾ ॥

जा तू मेलहि ता तुझै समावा ॥

Jaa too melahi taa tujhai samaavaa ||

When You unite me with Yourself, then I am merged in You.

ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥

जै जै कारु जपउ जगदीस ॥

Jai jai kaaru japau jagadees ||

I chant Your Victorious Praises, O Life of the World.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਬੀਸ ਇਕੀਸ ॥੨੫॥

गुरमति मिलीऐ बीस इकीस ॥२५॥

Guramati mileeai bees ikees ||25||

Accepting the Guru's Teachings, one is sure to merge in the One Lord. ||25||


ਝਖਿ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ॥

झखि बोलणु किआ जग सिउ वादु ॥

Jhakhi bola(nn)u kiaa jag siu vaadu ||

Why do you speak such nonsense, and argue with the world?

ਝੂਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਰਮਾਦੁ ॥

झूरि मरै देखै परमादु ॥

Jhoori marai dekhai paramaadu ||

You shall die repenting, when you see your own insanity.

ਜਨਮਿ ਮੂਏ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਵਣ ਆਸਾ ॥

जनमि मूए नही जीवण आसा ॥

Janami mooe nahee jeeva(nn) aasaa ||

He is born, only to die, but he does not wish to live.

ਆਇ ਚਲੇ ਭਏ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥

आइ चले भए आस निरासा ॥

Aai chale bhae aas niraasaa ||

He comes hopeful, and then goes, without hope.

ਝੁਰਿ ਝੁਰਿ ਝਖਿ ਮਾਟੀ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

झुरि झुरि झखि माटी रलि जाइ ॥

Jhuri jhuri jhakhi maatee rali jaai ||

Regretting, repenting and grieving, he is dust mixing with dust.

ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਚਾਂਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥

कालु न चांपै हरि गुण गाइ ॥

Kaalu na chaampai hari gu(nn) gaai ||

Death does not chew up one who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਪਾਈ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥

पाई नव निधि हरि कै नाइ ॥

Paaee nav nidhi hari kai naai ||

The nine treasures are obtained through the Name of the Lord;

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੨੬॥

आपे देवै सहजि सुभाइ ॥२६॥

Aape devai sahaji subhaai ||26||

The Lord bestows intuitive peace and poise. ||26||


ਞਿਆਨੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

ञिआनो बोलै आपे बूझै ॥

(Ny)iaano bolai aape boojhai ||

He speaks spiritual wisdom, and He Himself understands it.

ਆਪੇ ਸਮਝੈ ਆਪੇ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

आपे समझै आपे सूझै ॥

Aape samajhai aape soojhai ||

He Himself knows it, and He Himself comprehends it.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

गुर का कहिआ अंकि समावै ॥

Gur kaa kahiaa ankki samaavai ||

One who takes the Words of the Guru into his very fiber,

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਾਚੋ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

निरमल सूचे साचो भावै ॥

Niramal sooche saacho bhaavai ||

Is immaculate and holy, and is pleasing to the True Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਨਹੀ ਤੋਟ ॥

गुरु सागरु रतनी नही तोट ॥

Guru saagaru ratanee nahee tot ||

In the ocean of the Guru, there is no shortage of pearls.

ਲਾਲ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੋਟ ॥

लाल पदारथ साचु अखोट ॥

Laal padaarath saachu akhot ||

The treasure of jewels is truly inexhaustible.

ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਸਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥

गुरि कहिआ सा कार कमावहु ॥

Guri kahiaa saa kaar kamaavahu ||

Do those deeds which the Guru has ordained.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥

गुर की करणी काहे धावहु ॥

Gur kee kara(nn)ee kaahe dhaavahu ||

Why are you chasing after the Guru's actions?

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਹੁ ॥੨੭॥

नानक गुरमति साचि समावहु ॥२७॥

Naanak guramati saachi samaavahu ||27||

O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, merge in the True Lord. ||27||


ਟੂਟੈ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਹੀ ॥

टूटै नेहु कि बोलहि सही ॥

Tootai nehu ki bolahi sahee ||

Love is broken, when one speaks in defiance.

ਟੂਟੈ ਬਾਹ ਦੁਹੂ ਦਿਸ ਗਹੀ ॥

टूटै बाह दुहू दिस गही ॥

Tootai baah duhoo dis gahee ||

The arm is broken, when it is pulled from both sides.

ਟੂਟਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਗਈ ਬੁਰ ਬੋਲਿ ॥

टूटि परीति गई बुर बोलि ॥

Tooti pareeti gaee bur boli ||

Love breaks, when the speech goes sour.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਛਾਡੀ ਢੋਲਿ ॥

दुरमति परहरि छाडी ढोलि ॥

Duramati parahari chhaadee dholi ||

The Husband Lord abandons and leaves behind the evil-minded bride.

ਟੂਟੈ ਗੰਠਿ ਪੜੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

टूटै गंठि पड़ै वीचारि ॥

Tootai gantthi pa(rr)ai veechaari ||

The broken knot is tied again, through contemplation and meditation.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਰਿ ॥

गुर सबदी घरि कारजु सारि ॥

Gur sabadee ghari kaaraju saari ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one's affairs are resolved in one's own home.

ਲਾਹਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੋਟਾ ॥

लाहा साचु न आवै तोटा ॥

Laahaa saachu na aavai totaa ||

One who earns the profit of the True Name, will not lose it again;

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਮੋਟਾ ॥੨੮॥

त्रिभवण ठाकुरु प्रीतमु मोटा ॥२८॥

Tribhava(nn) thaakuru preetamu motaa ||28||

The Lord and Master of the three worlds is your best friend. ||28||


ਠਾਕਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਠਾਇ ॥

ठाकहु मनूआ राखहु ठाइ ॥

Thaakahu manooaa raakhahu thaai ||

Control your mind, and keep it in its place.

ਠਹਕਿ ਮੁਈ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥

ठहकि मुई अवगुणि पछुताइ ॥

Thahaki muee avagu(nn)i pachhutaai ||

The world is destroyed by conflict, regretting its sinful mistakes.

ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਬਾਈ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

ठाकुरु एकु सबाई नारि ॥

Thaakuru eku sabaaee naari ||

There is one Husband Lord, and all are His brides.

ਬਹੁਤੇ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥

बहुते वेस करे कूड़िआरि ॥

Bahute ves kare koo(rr)iaari ||

The false bride wears many costumes.

ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈ ॥

पर घरि जाती ठाकि रहाई ॥

Par ghari jaatee thaaki rahaaee ||

He stops her from going into the homes of others;

ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

महलि बुलाई ठाक न पाई ॥

Mahali bulaaee thaak na paaee ||

He summons her to the Mansion of His Presence, and no obstacles block her path.

ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

सबदि सवारी साचि पिआरी ॥

Sabadi savaaree saachi piaaree ||

She is embellished with the Word of the Shabad, and is loved by the True Lord.

ਸਾਈ ਸੋੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੨੯॥

साई सोहागणि ठाकुरि धारी ॥२९॥

Saaee saohaaga(nn)i thaakuri dhaaree ||29||

She is the happy soul bride, who takes the Support of her Lord and Master. ||29||


ਡੋਲਤ ਡੋਲਤ ਹੇ ਸਖੀ ਫਾਟੇ ਚੀਰ ਸੀਗਾਰ ॥

डोलत डोलत हे सखी फाटे चीर सीगार ॥

Dolat dolat he sakhee phaate cheer seegaar ||

Wandering and roaming around, O my companion, your beautiful robes are torn.

ਡਾਹਪਣਿ ਤਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਡਰ ਬਿਣਠੀ ਡਾਰ ॥

डाहपणि तनि सुखु नही बिनु डर बिणठी डार ॥

Daahapa(nn)i tani sukhu nahee binu dar bi(nn)athee daar ||

In jealousy, the body is not at peace; without the Fear of God, multitudes are ruined.

ਡਰਪਿ ਮੁਈ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਡੀਠੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ॥

डरपि मुई घरि आपणै डीठी कंति सुजाणि ॥

Darapi muee ghari aapa(nn)ai deethee kantti sujaa(nn)i ||

One who remains dead within her own home, through the Fear of God, is looked upon with favor by her all-knowing Husband Lord.

ਡਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣਿ ॥

डरु राखिआ गुरि आपणै निरभउ नामु वखाणि ॥

Daru raakhiaa guri aapa(nn)ai nirabhau naamu vakhaa(nn)i ||

She maintains fear of her Guru, and chants the Name of the Fearless Lord.

ਡੂਗਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਤਿਖਾ ਘਣੀ ਜਬ ਦੇਖਾ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

डूगरि वासु तिखा घणी जब देखा नही दूरि ॥

Doogari vaasu tikhaa gha(nn)ee jab dekhaa nahee doori ||

Living on the mountain, I suffer such great thirst; when I see Him, I know that He is not far away.

ਤਿਖਾ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

तिखा निवारी सबदु मंनि अम्रितु पीआ भरपूरि ॥

Tikhaa nivaaree sabadu manni ammmritu peeaa bharapoori ||

My thirst is quenched, and I have accepted the Word of the Shabad. I drink my fill of the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਦੇਹਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥

देहि देहि आखै सभु कोई जै भावै तै देइ ॥

Dehi dehi aakhai sabhu koee jai bhaavai tai dei ||

Everyone says, ""Give! Give!"" As He pleases, He gives.

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਦੇਵਸੀ ਤਿਖਾ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੩੦॥

गुरू दुआरै देवसी तिखा निवारै सोइ ॥३०॥

Guroo duaarai devasee tikhaa nivaarai soi ||30||

Through the Gurdwara, the Guru's Door, He gives, and quenches the thirst. ||30||


ਢੰਢੋਲਤ ਢੂਢਤ ਹਉ ਫਿਰੀ ਢਹਿ ਢਹਿ ਪਵਨਿ ਕਰਾਰਿ ॥

ढंढोलत ढूढत हउ फिरी ढहि ढहि पवनि करारि ॥

Dhanddholat dhoodhat hau phiree dhahi dhahi pavani karaari ||

Searching and seeking, I fell down and collapsed upon the bank of the river of life.

ਭਾਰੇ ਢਹਤੇ ਢਹਿ ਪਏ ਹਉਲੇ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

भारे ढहते ढहि पए हउले निकसे पारि ॥

Bhaare dhahate dhahi pae haule nikase paari ||

Those who are heavy with sin sink down, but those who are light swim across.

ਅਮਰ ਅਜਾਚੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

अमर अजाची हरि मिले तिन कै हउ बलि जाउ ॥

Amar ajaachee hari mile tin kai hau bali jaau ||

I am a sacrifice to those who meet the immortal and immeasurable Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਧੂੜਿ ਅਘੁਲੀਐ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥

तिन की धूड़ि अघुलीऐ संगति मेलि मिलाउ ॥

Tin kee dhoo(rr)i aghuleeai sanggati meli milaau ||

The dust of their feet brings emancipation; in their company, we are united in the Lord's Union.

ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਉ ॥

मनु दीआ गुरि आपणै पाइआ निरमल नाउ ॥

Manu deeaa guri aapa(nn)ai paaiaa niramal naau ||

I gave my mind to my Guru, and received the Immaculate Name.

ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

जिनि नामु दीआ तिसु सेवसा तिसु बलिहारै जाउ ॥

Jini naamu deeaa tisu sevasaa tisu balihaarai jaau ||

I serve the One who gave me the Naam; I am a sacrifice to Him.

ਜੋ ਉਸਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਢਾਹਸੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

जो उसारे सो ढाहसी तिसु बिनु अवरु न कोइ ॥

Jo usaare so dhaahasee tisu binu avaru na koi ||

He who builds, also demolishes; there is no other than Him.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਲਾ ਤਾ ਤਨਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੩੧॥

गुर परसादी तिसु सम्हला ता तनि दूखु न होइ ॥३१॥

Gur parasaadee tisu sammhlaa taa tani dookhu na hoi ||31||

By Guru's Grace, I contemplate Him, and then my body does not suffer in pain. ||31||


ਣਾ ਕੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਗਹੀ ਣਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨ ਹੋਗੁ ॥

णा को मेरा किसु गही णा को होआ न होगु ॥

(Nn)aa ko meraa kisu gahee (nn)aa ko hoaa na hogu ||

No one is mine - whose gown should I grasp and hold? No one ever was, and no one shall ever be mine.

ਆਵਣਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਰੋਗੁ ॥

आवणि जाणि विगुचीऐ दुबिधा विआपै रोगु ॥

Aava(nn)i jaa(nn)i vigucheeai dubidhaa viaapai rogu ||

Coming and going, one is ruined, afflicted with the disease of dual-mindedness.

ਣਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਕਲਰ ਕੰਧ ਗਿਰੰਤਿ ॥

णाम विहूणे आदमी कलर कंध गिरंति ॥

(Nn)aam vihoo(nn)e aadamee kalar kanddh girantti ||

Those beings who lack the Naam, the Name of the Lord, collapse like pillars of salt.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜਾਇ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਅੰਤਿ ॥

विणु नावै किउ छूटीऐ जाइ रसातलि अंति ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai kiu chhooteeai jaai rasaatali antti ||

Without the Name, how can they find release? They fall into hell in the end.

ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਵੈ ਅਖਰੀ ਅਗਣਤੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

गणत गणावै अखरी अगणतु साचा सोइ ॥

Ga(nn)at ga(nn)aavai akharee aga(nn)atu saachaa soi ||

Using a limited number of words, we describe the unlimited True Lord.

ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

अगिआनी मतिहीणु है गुर बिनु गिआनु न होइ ॥

Agiaanee matihee(nn)u hai gur binu giaanu na hoi ||

The ignorant lack understanding. Without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom.

ਤੂਟੀ ਤੰਤੁ ਰਬਾਬ ਕੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਨਹੀ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ॥

तूटी तंतु रबाब की वाजै नही विजोगि ॥

Tootee tanttu rabaab kee vaajai nahee vijogi ||

The separated soul is like the broken string of a guitar, which does not vibrate its sound.

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਿ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥੩੨॥

विछुड़िआ मेलै प्रभू नानक करि संजोग ॥३२॥

Vichhu(rr)iaa melai prbhoo naanak kari sanjjog ||32||

God unites the separated souls with Himself, awakening their destiny. ||32||


ਤਰਵਰੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਪੰਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਰਵਰਿ ਪੰਖੀ ਪੰਚ ॥

तरवरु काइआ पंखि मनु तरवरि पंखी पंच ॥

Taravaru kaaiaa pankkhi manu taravari pankkhee pancch ||

The body is the tree, and the mind is the bird; the birds in the tree are the five senses.

ਤਤੁ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕਸੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਫਾਸ ਨ ਰੰਚ ॥

ततु चुगहि मिलि एकसे तिन कउ फास न रंच ॥

Tatu chugahi mili ekase tin kau phaas na rancch ||

They peck at the essence of reality, and merge with the One Lord. They are never trapped at all.

ਉਡਹਿ ਤ ਬੇਗੁਲ ਬੇਗੁਲੇ ਤਾਕਹਿ ਚੋਗ ਘਣੀ ॥

उडहि त बेगुल बेगुले ताकहि चोग घणी ॥

Udahi ta begul begule taakahi chog gha(nn)ee ||

But the others fly away in a hurry, when they see the food.

ਪੰਖ ਤੁਟੇ ਫਾਹੀ ਪੜੀ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਭੀੜ ਬਣੀ ॥

पंख तुटे फाही पड़ी अवगुणि भीड़ बणी ॥

Pankkh tute phaahee pa(rr)ee avagu(nn)i bhee(rr) ba(nn)ee ||

Their feathers are clipped, and they are caught in the noose; through their mistakes, they are caught in disaster.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਮਿ ਮਣੀ ॥

बिनु साचे किउ छूटीऐ हरि गुण करमि मणी ॥

Binu saache kiu chhooteeai hari gu(nn) karami ma(nn)ee ||

Without the True Lord, how can anyone find release? The jewel of the Lord's Glorious Praises comes by the karma of good actions.

ਆਪਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਵਡਾ ਆਪਿ ਧਣੀ ॥

आपि छडाए छूटीऐ वडा आपि धणी ॥

Aapi chhadaae chhooteeai vadaa aapi dha(nn)ee ||

When He Himself releases them, only then are they released. He Himself is the Great Master.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

गुर परसादी छूटीऐ किरपा आपि करेइ ॥

Gur parasaadee chhooteeai kirapaa aapi karei ||

By Guru's Grace, they are released, when He Himself grants His Grace.

ਅਪਣੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੩੩॥

अपणै हाथि वडाईआ जै भावै तै देइ ॥३३॥

Apa(nn)ai haathi vadaaeeaa jai bhaavai tai dei ||33||

Glorious greatness rests in His Hands. He blesses those with whom He is pleased. ||33||


ਥਰ ਥਰ ਕੰਪੈ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਾਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

थर थर क्मपै जीअड़ा थान विहूणा होइ ॥

Thar thar kamppai jeea(rr)aa thaan vihoo(nn)aa hoi ||

The soul trembles and shakes, when it loses its mooring and support.

ਥਾਨਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਫੀਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

थानि मानि सचु एकु है काजु न फीटै कोइ ॥

Thaani maani sachu eku hai kaaju na pheetai koi ||

Only the support of the True Lord brings honor and glory. Through it, one's works are never in vain.

ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

थिरु नाराइणु थिरु गुरू थिरु साचा बीचारु ॥

Thiru naaraai(nn)u thiru guroo thiru saachaa beechaaru ||

The Lord is eternal and forever stable; the Guru is stable, and contemplation upon the True Lord is stable.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥੁ ਤੂ ਨਿਧਾਰਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥

सुरि नर नाथह नाथु तू निधारा आधारु ॥

Suri nar naathah naathu too nidhaaraa aadhaaru ||

O Lord and Master of angels, men and Yogic masters, You are the support of the unsupported.

ਸਰਬੇ ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰੀ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥

सरबे थान थनंतरी तू दाता दातारु ॥

Sarabe thaan thananttaree too daataa daataaru ||

In all places and interspaces, You are the Giver, the Great Giver.

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

जह देखा तह एकु तू अंतु न पारावारु ॥

Jah dekhaa tah eku too anttu na paaraavaaru ||

Wherever I look, there I see You, Lord; You have no end or limitation.

ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

थान थनंतरि रवि रहिआ गुर सबदी वीचारि ॥

Thaan thananttari ravi rahiaa gur sabadee veechaari ||

You are pervading and permeating the places and interspaces; reflecting upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad, You are found.

ਅਣਮੰਗਿਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵਸੀ ਵਡਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੩੪॥

अणमंगिआ दानु देवसी वडा अगम अपारु ॥३४॥

A(nn)amanggiaa daanu devasee vadaa agam apaaru ||34||

You give gifts even when they are not asked for; You are great, inaccessible and infinite. ||34||


ਦਇਆ ਦਾਨੁ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

दइआ दानु दइआलु तू करि करि देखणहारु ॥

Daiaa daanu daiaalu too kari kari dekha(nn)ahaaru ||

O Merciful Lord, You are the embodiment of mercy; creating the Creation, You behold it.

ਦਇਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰਿ ॥

दइआ करहि प्रभ मेलि लैहि खिन महि ढाहि उसारि ॥

Daiaa karahi prbh meli laihi khin mahi dhaahi usaari ||

Please shower Your Mercy upon me, O God, and unite me with Yourself. In an instant, You destroy and rebuild.

ਦਾਨਾ ਤੂ ਬੀਨਾ ਤੁਹੀ ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

दाना तू बीना तुही दाना कै सिरि दानु ॥

Daanaa too beenaa tuhee daanaa kai siri daanu ||

You are all-wise and all-seeing; You are the Greatest Giver of all givers.

ਦਾਲਦ ਭੰਜਨ ਦੁਖ ਦਲਣ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੩੫॥

दालद भंजन दुख दलण गुरमुखि गिआनु धिआनु ॥३५॥

Daalad bhanjjan dukh dala(nn) guramukhi giaanu dhiaanu ||35||

He is the Eradicator of poverty, and the Destroyer of pain; the Gurmukh realizes spiritual wisdom and meditation. ||35||


ਧਨਿ ਗਇਐ ਬਹਿ ਝੂਰੀਐ ਧਨ ਮਹਿ ਚੀਤੁ ਗਵਾਰ ॥

धनि गइऐ बहि झूरीऐ धन महि चीतु गवार ॥

Dhani gaiai bahi jhooreeai dhan mahi cheetu gavaar ||

Losing his wealth, he cries out in anguish; the fool's consciousness is engrossed in wealth.

ਧਨੁ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

धनु विरली सचु संचिआ निरमलु नामु पिआरि ॥

Dhanu viralee sachu sancchiaa niramalu naamu piaari ||

How rare are those who gather the wealth of Truth, and love the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਧਨੁ ਗਇਆ ਤਾ ਜਾਣ ਦੇਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਏਕ ॥

धनु गइआ ता जाण देहि जे राचहि रंगि एक ॥

Dhanu gaiaa taa jaa(nn) dehi je raachahi ranggi ek ||

If by losing your wealth, you may become absorbed in the Love of the One Lord, then just let it go.

ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਿਰੁ ਸਉਪੀਐ ਭੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥

मनु दीजै सिरु सउपीऐ भी करते की टेक ॥

Manu deejai siru saupeeai bhee karate kee tek ||

Dedicate your mind, and surrender your head; seek only the Support of the Creator Lord.

ਧੰਧਾ ਧਾਵਤ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥

धंधा धावत रहि गए मन महि सबदु अनंदु ॥

Dhanddhaa dhaavat rahi gae man mahi sabadu ananddu ||

Worldly affairs and wanderings cease, when the mind is filled with the bliss of the Shabad.

ਦੁਰਜਨ ਤੇ ਸਾਜਨ ਭਏ ਭੇਟੇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ॥

दुरजन ते साजन भए भेटे गुर गोविंद ॥

Durajan te saajan bhae bhete gur govindd ||

Even one's enemies become friends, meeting with the Guru, the Lord of the Universe.

ਬਨੁ ਬਨੁ ਫਿਰਤੀ ਢੂਢਤੀ ਬਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਘਰਿ ਬਾਰਿ ॥

बनु बनु फिरती ढूढती बसतु रही घरि बारि ॥

Banu banu phiratee dhoodhatee basatu rahee ghari baari ||

Wandering from forest to forest searching, you will find that those things are within the home of your own heart.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ॥੩੬॥

सतिगुरि मेली मिलि रही जनम मरण दुखु निवारि ॥३६॥

Satiguri melee mili rahee janam mara(nn) dukhu nivaari ||36||

United by the True Guru, you shall remain united, and the pains of birth and death will be ended. ||36||


ਨਾਨਾ ਕਰਤ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

नाना करत न छूटीऐ विणु गुण जम पुरि जाहि ॥

Naanaa karat na chhooteeai vi(nn)u gu(nn) jam puri jaahi ||

Through various rituals, one does not find release. Without virtue, one is sent to the City of Death.

ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹੁ ਨ ਓਹੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਗੁਣਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥

ना तिसु एहु न ओहु है अवगुणि फिरि पछुताहि ॥

Naa tisu ehu na ohu hai avagu(nn)i phiri pachhutaahi ||

One will not have this world or the next; committing sinful mistakes, one comes to regret and repent in the end.

ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

ना तिसु गिआनु न धिआनु है ना तिसु धरमु धिआनु ॥

Naa tisu giaanu na dhiaanu hai naa tisu dharamu dhiaanu ||

He has neither spiritual wisdom or meditation; neither Dharmic faith nor meditation.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਹਾ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

विणु नावै निरभउ कहा किआ जाणा अभिमानु ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai nirabhau kahaa kiaa jaa(nn)aa abhimaanu ||

Without the Name, how can one be fearless? How can he understand egotistical pride?

ਥਾਕਿ ਰਹੀ ਕਿਵ ਅਪੜਾ ਹਾਥ ਨਹੀ ਨਾ ਪਾਰੁ ॥

थाकि रही किव अपड़ा हाथ नही ना पारु ॥

Thaaki rahee kiv apa(rr)aa haath nahee naa paaru ||

I am so tired - how can I get there? This ocean has no bottom or end.

ਨਾ ਸਾਜਨ ਸੇ ਰੰਗੁਲੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

ना साजन से रंगुले किसु पहि करी पुकार ॥

Naa saajan se ranggule kisu pahi karee pukaar ||

I have no loving companions, whom I can ask for help.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

नानक प्रिउ प्रिउ जे करी मेले मेलणहारु ॥

Naanak priu priu je karee mele mela(nn)ahaaru ||

O Nanak, crying out, ""Beloved, Beloved"", we are united with the Uniter.

ਜਿਨਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੀ ਸੋ ਮੇਲਸੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਿ ॥੩੭॥

जिनि विछोड़ी सो मेलसी गुर कै हेति अपारि ॥३७॥

Jini vichho(rr)ee so melasee gur kai heti apaari ||37||

He who separated me, unites me again; my love for the Guru is infinite. ||37||


ਪਾਪੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਪਾਪੀ ਕਉ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

पापु बुरा पापी कउ पिआरा ॥

Paapu buraa paapee kau piaaraa ||

Sin is bad, but it is dear to the sinner.

ਪਾਪਿ ਲਦੇ ਪਾਪੇ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥

पापि लदे पापे पासारा ॥

Paapi lade paape paasaaraa ||

He loads himself with sin, and expands his world through sin.

ਪਰਹਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਆਪੁ ॥

परहरि पापु पछाणै आपु ॥

Parahari paapu pachhaa(nn)ai aapu ||

Sin is far away from one who understands himself.

ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥

ना तिसु सोगु विजोगु संतापु ॥

Naa tisu sogu vijogu santtaapu ||

He is not afflicted by sorrow or separation.

ਨਰਕਿ ਪੜੰਤਉ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਕਿਉ ਬੰਚੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥

नरकि पड़ंतउ किउ रहै किउ बंचै जमकालु ॥

Naraki pa(rr)anttau kiu rahai kiu bancchai jamakaalu ||

How can one avoid falling into hell? How can he cheat the Messenger of Death?

ਕਿਉ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਖੈ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

किउ आवण जाणा वीसरै झूठु बुरा खै कालु ॥

Kiu aava(nn) jaa(nn)aa veesarai jhoothu buraa khai kaalu ||

How can coming and going be forgotten? Falsehood is bad, and death is cruel.

ਮਨੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੀ ਵੇੜਿਆ ਭੀ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

मनु जंजाली वेड़िआ भी जंजाला माहि ॥

Manu janjjaalee ve(rr)iaa bhee janjjaalaa maahi ||

The mind is enveloped by entanglements, and into entanglements it falls.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਪਾਪੇ ਪਚਹਿ ਪਚਾਹਿ ॥੩੮॥

विणु नावै किउ छूटीऐ पापे पचहि पचाहि ॥३८॥

Vi(nn)u naavai kiu chhooteeai paape pachahi pachaahi ||38||

Without the Name, how can anyone be saved? They rot away in sin. ||38||


ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਫਾਸੈ ਕਊਆ ॥

फिरि फिरि फाही फासै कऊआ ॥

Phiri phiri phaahee phaasai kauaa ||

Again and again, the crow falls into the trap.

ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ਅਬ ਕਿਆ ਹੂਆ ॥

फिरि पछुताना अब किआ हूआ ॥

Phiri pachhutaanaa ab kiaa hooaa ||

Then he regrets it, but what can he do now?

ਫਾਥਾ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗੈ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ॥

फाथा चोग चुगै नही बूझै ॥

Phaathaa chog chugai nahee boojhai ||

Even though he is trapped, he pecks at the food; he does not understand.

ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

सतगुरु मिलै त आखी सूझै ॥

Sataguru milai ta aakhee soojhai ||

If he meets the True Guru, then he sees with his eyes.

ਜਿਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਫਾਥੀ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਿ ॥

जिउ मछुली फाथी जम जालि ॥

Jiu machhulee phaathee jam jaali ||

Like a fish, he is caught in the noose of death.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥

विणु गुर दाते मुकति न भालि ॥

Vi(nn)u gur daate mukati na bhaali ||

Do not seek liberation from anyone else, except the Guru, the Great Giver.

ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

फिरि फिरि आवै फिरि फिरि जाइ ॥

Phiri phiri aavai phiri phiri jaai ||

Over and over again, he comes; over and over again, he goes.

ਇਕ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਚੈ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

इक रंगि रचै रहै लिव लाइ ॥

Ik ranggi rachai rahai liv laai ||

Be absorbed in love for the One Lord, and remain lovingly focused on Him.

ਇਵ ਛੂਟੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਾਸ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੩੯॥

इव छूटै फिरि फास न पाइ ॥३९॥

Iv chhootai phiri phaas na paai ||39||

In this way you shall be saved, and you shall not fall into the trap again. ||39||


ਬੀਰਾ ਬੀਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੀ ਬੀਰ ਭਏ ਬੈਰਾਇ ॥

बीरा बीरा करि रही बीर भए बैराइ ॥

Beeraa beeraa kari rahee beer bhae bairaai ||

She calls out, ""Brother, O brother - stay, O brother!"" But he becomes a stranger.

ਬੀਰ ਚਲੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਬਹਿਣ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

बीर चले घरि आपणै बहिण बिरहि जलि जाइ ॥

Beer chale ghari aapa(nn)ai bahi(nn) birahi jali jaai ||

Her brother departs for his own home, and his sister burns with the pain of separation.

ਬਾਬੁਲ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਬੇਟੜੀ ਬਾਲੀ ਬਾਲੈ ਨੇਹਿ ॥

बाबुल कै घरि बेटड़ी बाली बालै नेहि ॥

Baabul kai ghari beta(rr)ee baalee baalai nehi ||

In this world, her father's home, the daughter, the innocent soul bride, loves her Young Husband Lord.

ਜੇ ਲੋੜਹਿ ਵਰੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤੇਹਿ ॥

जे लोड़हि वरु कामणी सतिगुरु सेवहि तेहि ॥

Je lo(rr)ahi varu kaama(nn)ee satiguru sevahi tehi ||

If you long for your Husband Lord, O soul bride, then serve the True Guru with love.

ਬਿਰਲੋ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਣਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੇਇ ॥

बिरलो गिआनी बूझणउ सतिगुरु साचि मिलेइ ॥

Biralo giaanee boojha(nn)au satiguru saachi milei ||

How rare are the spiritually wise, who meet the True Guru, and truly understand.

ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥

ठाकुर हाथि वडाईआ जै भावै तै देइ ॥

Thaakur haathi vadaaeeaa jai bhaavai tai dei ||

All glorious greatness rests in the Lord and Master's Hands. He grants them, when He is pleased.

ਬਾਣੀ ਬਿਰਲਉ ਬੀਚਾਰਸੀ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

बाणी बिरलउ बीचारसी जे को गुरमुखि होइ ॥

Baa(nn)ee biralau beechaarasee je ko guramukhi hoi ||

How rare are those who contemplate the Word of the Guru's Bani; they become Gurmukh.

ਇਹ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੪੦॥

इह बाणी महा पुरख की निज घरि वासा होइ ॥४०॥

Ih baa(nn)ee mahaa purakh kee nij ghari vaasaa hoi ||40||

This is the Bani of the Supreme Being; through it, one dwells within the home of his inner being. ||40||


ਭਨਿ ਭਨਿ ਘੜੀਐ ਘੜਿ ਘੜਿ ਭਜੈ ਢਾਹਿ ਉਸਾਰੈ ਉਸਰੇ ਢਾਹੈ ॥

भनि भनि घड़ीऐ घड़ि घड़ि भजै ढाहि उसारै उसरे ढाहै ॥

Bhani bhani gha(rr)eeai gha(rr)i gha(rr)i bhajai dhaahi usaarai usare dhaahai ||

Shattering and breaking apart, He creates and re-creates; creating, He shatters again. He builds up what He has demolished, and demolishes what He has built.

ਸਰ ਭਰਿ ਸੋਖੈ ਭੀ ਭਰਿ ਪੋਖੈ ਸਮਰਥ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੈ ॥

सर भरि सोखै भी भरि पोखै समरथ वेपरवाहै ॥

Sar bhari sokhai bhee bhari pokhai samarath veparavaahai ||

He dries up the pools which are full, and fills the dried tanks again. He is all-powerful and independent.

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨੇ ਭਏ ਦਿਵਾਨੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

भरमि भुलाने भए दिवाने विणु भागा किआ पाईऐ ॥

Bharami bhulaane bhae divaane vi(nn)u bhaagaa kiaa paaeeai ||

Deluded by doubt, they have gone insane; without destiny, what do they obtain?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਡੋਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਕੜੀ ਜਿਨ ਖਿੰਚੈ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਈਐ ॥

गुरमुखि गिआनु डोरी प्रभि पकड़ी जिन खिंचै तिन जाईऐ ॥

Guramukhi giaanu doree prbhi paka(rr)ee jin khincchai tin jaaeeai ||

The Gurmukhs know that God holds the string; wherever He pulls it, they must go.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ ॥

हरि गुण गाइ सदा रंगि राते बहुड़ि न पछोताईऐ ॥

Hari gu(nn) gaai sadaa ranggi raate bahu(rr)i na pachhotaaeeai ||

Those who sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, are forever imbued with His Love; they never again feel regret.

ਭਭੈ ਭਾਲਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਤਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

भभै भालहि गुरमुखि बूझहि ता निज घरि वासा पाईऐ ॥

Bhabhai bhaalahi guramukhi boojhahi taa nij ghari vaasaa paaeeai ||

Bhabha: If someone seeks, and then becomes Gurmukh, then he comes to dwell in the home of his own heart.

ਭਭੈ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਵਿਖੜਾ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਤਰੀਐ ॥

भभै भउजलु मारगु विखड़ा आस निरासा तरीऐ ॥

Bhabhai bhaujalu maaragu vikha(rr)aa aas niraasaa tareeai ||

Bhabha: The way of the terrifying world-ocean is treacherous. Remain free of hope, in the midst of hope, and you shall cross over.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਆਪੋ ਚੀਨੑੈ ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਇਵ ਮਰੀਐ ॥੪੧॥

गुर परसादी आपो चीन्है जीवतिआ इव मरीऐ ॥४१॥

Gur parasaadee aapo cheenhai jeevatiaa iv mareeai ||41||

By Guru's Grace, one comes to understand himself; in this way, he remains dead while yet alive. ||41||


ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ॥

माइआ माइआ करि मुए माइआ किसै न साथि ॥

Maaiaa maaiaa kari mue maaiaa kisai na saathi ||

Crying out for the wealth and riches of Maya, they die; but Maya does not go along with them.

ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਡੁਮਣੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਭੂਲੀ ਆਥਿ ॥

हंसु चलै उठि डुमणो माइआ भूली आथि ॥

Hanssu chalai uthi duma(nn)o maaiaa bhoolee aathi ||

The soul-swan arises and departs, sad and depressed, leaving its wealth behind.

ਮਨੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਜਮਿ ਜੋਹਿਆ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਚਲਹਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

मनु झूठा जमि जोहिआ अवगुण चलहि नालि ॥

Manu jhoothaa jami johiaa avagu(nn) chalahi naali ||

The false mind is hunted by the Messenger of Death; it carries its faults along when it goes.

ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਉਲਟੋ ਮਰੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

मन महि मनु उलटो मरै जे गुण होवहि नालि ॥

Man mahi manu ulato marai je gu(nn) hovahi naali ||

The mind turns inward, and merges with mind, when it is with virtue.

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਏ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਲਿ ॥

मेरी मेरी करि मुए विणु नावै दुखु भालि ॥

Meree meree kari mue vi(nn)u naavai dukhu bhaali ||

Crying out, ""Mine, mine!"", they have died, but without the Name, they find only pain.

ਗੜ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਕਹਾ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਜੀ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥

गड़ मंदर महला कहा जिउ बाजी दीबाणु ॥

Ga(rr) manddar mahalaa kahaa jiu baajee deebaa(nn)u ||

So where are their forts, mansions, palaces and courts? They are like a short story.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਣੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

नानक सचे नाम विणु झूठा आवण जाणु ॥

Naanak sache naam vi(nn)u jhoothaa aava(nn) jaa(nn)u ||

O Nanak, without the True Name, the false just come and go.

ਆਪੇ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪੨॥

आपे चतुरु सरूपु है आपे जाणु सुजाणु ॥४२॥

Aape chaturu saroopu hai aape jaa(nn)u sujaa(nn)u ||42||

He Himself is clever and so very beautiful; He Himself is wise and all-knowing. ||42||


ਜੋ ਆਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਇ ਗਏ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ॥

जो आवहि से जाहि फुनि आइ गए पछुताहि ॥

Jo aavahi se jaahi phuni aai gae pachhutaahi ||

Those who come, must go in the end; they come and go, regretting and repenting.

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਘਟੈ ਨ ਵਧੈ ਉਤਾਹਿ ॥

लख चउरासीह मेदनी घटै न वधै उताहि ॥

Lakh chauraaseeh medanee ghatai na vadhai utaahi ||

They will pass through 8.4 millions species; this number does not decrease or rise.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

से जन उबरे जिन हरि भाइआ ॥

Se jan ubare jin hari bhaaiaa ||

They alone are saved, who love the Lord.

ਧੰਧਾ ਮੁਆ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

धंधा मुआ विगूती माइआ ॥

Dhanddhaa muaa vigootee maaiaa ||

Their worldly entanglements are ended, and Maya is conquered.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਾਲਸੀ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਮੀਤੁ ਕਰੇਉ ॥

जो दीसै सो चालसी किस कउ मीतु करेउ ॥

Jo deesai so chaalasee kis kau meetu kareu ||

Whoever is seen, shall depart; who should I make my friend?

ਜੀਉ ਸਮਪਉ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਦੇਉ ॥

जीउ समपउ आपणा तनु मनु आगै देउ ॥

Jeeu samapau aapa(nn)aa tanu manu aagai deu ||

I dedicate my soul, and place my body and mind in offering before Him.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਧਣੀ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਓਟ ॥

असथिरु करता तू धणी तिस ही की मै ओट ॥

Asathiru karataa too dha(nn)ee tis hee kee mai ot ||

You are eternally stable, O Creator, Lord and Master; I lean on Your Support.

ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਹਉ ਮੁਈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਚੋਟ ॥੪੩॥

गुण की मारी हउ मुई सबदि रती मनि चोट ॥४३॥

Gu(nn) kee maaree hau muee sabadi ratee mani chot ||43||

Conquered by virtue, egotism is killed; imbued with the Word of the Shabad, the mind rejects the world. ||43||


ਰਾਣਾ ਰਾਉ ਨ ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਤੁੰਗੁ ਫਕੀਰੁ ॥

राणा राउ न को रहै रंगु न तुंगु फकीरु ॥

Raa(nn)aa raau na ko rahai ranggu na tunggu phakeeru ||

Neither the kings nor the nobles will remain; neither the rich nor the poor will remain.

ਵਾਰੀ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਬੰਧੈ ਧੀਰ ॥

वारी आपो आपणी कोइ न बंधै धीर ॥

Vaaree aapo aapa(nn)ee koi na banddhai dheer ||

When one's turn comes, no one can stay here.

ਰਾਹੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਭੀਹਾਵਲਾ ਸਰ ਡੂਗਰ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥

राहु बुरा भीहावला सर डूगर असगाह ॥

Raahu buraa bheehaavalaa sar doogar asagaah ||

The path is difficult and treacherous; the pools and mountains are impassable.

ਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਝੁਰਿ ਮੁਈ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹ ॥

मै तनि अवगण झुरि मुई विणु गुण किउ घरि जाह ॥

Mai tani avaga(nn) jhuri muee vi(nn)u gu(nn) kiu ghari jaah ||

My body is filled with faults; I am dying of grief. Without virtue, how can I enter my home?

ਗੁਣੀਆ ਗੁਣ ਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲੇ ਕਿਉ ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਉ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

गुणीआ गुण ले प्रभ मिले किउ तिन मिलउ पिआरि ॥

Gu(nn)eeaa gu(nn) le prbh mile kiu tin milau piaari ||

The virtuous take virtue, and meet God; how can I meet them with love?

ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਥੀ ਰਹਾਂ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥

तिन ही जैसी थी रहां जपि जपि रिदै मुरारि ॥

Tin hee jaisee thee rahaan japi japi ridai muraari ||

If only I could be like them, chanting and meditating within my heart on the Lord.

ਅਵਗੁਣੀ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਭੀ ਵਸਹਿ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

अवगुणी भरपूर है गुण भी वसहि नालि ॥

Avagu(nn)ee bharapoor hai gu(nn) bhee vasahi naali ||

He is overflowing with faults and demerits, but virtue dwells within him as well.

ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਜਾਪਨੀ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪੪॥

विणु सतगुर गुण न जापनी जिचरु सबदि न करे बीचारु ॥४४॥

Vi(nn)u satagur gu(nn) na jaapanee jicharu sabadi na kare beechaaru ||44||

Without the True Guru, he does not see God's Virtues; he does not chant the Glorious Virtues of God. ||44||


ਲਸਕਰੀਆ ਘਰ ਸੰਮਲੇ ਆਏ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ॥

लसकरीआ घर समले आए वजहु लिखाइ ॥

Lasakareeaa ghar sammale aae vajahu likhaai ||

God's soldiers take care of their homes; their pay is pre-ordained, before they come into the world.

ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਧਣੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

कार कमावहि सिरि धणी लाहा पलै पाइ ॥

Kaar kamaavahi siri dha(nn)ee laahaa palai paai ||

They serve their Supreme Lord and Master, and obtain the profit.

ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆ ਛੋਡੇ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥

लबु लोभु बुरिआईआ छोडे मनहु विसारि ॥

Labu lobhu buriaaeeaa chhode manahu visaari ||

They renounce greed, avarice and evil, and forget them from their minds.

ਗੜਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਾਰਿ ॥

गड़ि दोही पातिसाह की कदे न आवै हारि ॥

Ga(rr)i dohee paatisaah kee kade na aavai haari ||

In the fortress of the body, they announce the victory of their Supreme King; they are never ever vanquished.

ਚਾਕਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਸਉਹੇ ਉਤਰ ਦੇਇ ॥

चाकरु कहीऐ खसम का सउहे उतर देइ ॥

Chaakaru kaheeai khasam kaa sauhe utar dei ||

One who calls himself a servant of his Lord and Master, and yet speaks defiantly to Him,

ਵਜਹੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਖਤਿ ਨ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥

वजहु गवाए आपणा तखति न बैसहि सेइ ॥

Vajahu gavaae aapa(nn)aa takhati na baisahi sei ||

Shall forfeit his pay, and not be seated upon the throne.

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥

प्रीतम हथि वडिआईआ जै भावै तै देइ ॥

Preetam hathi vadiaaeeaa jai bhaavai tai dei ||

Glorious greatness rests in the hands of my Beloved; He gives, according to the Pleasure of His Will.

ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੪੫॥

आपि करे किसु आखीऐ अवरु न कोइ करेइ ॥४५॥

Aapi kare kisu aakheeai avaru na koi karei ||45||

He Himself does everything; who else should we address? No one else does anything. ||45||


ਬੀਜਉ ਸੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬਹੈ ਦੁਲੀਚਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

बीजउ सूझै को नही बहै दुलीचा पाइ ॥

Beejau soojhai ko nahee bahai duleechaa paai ||

I cannot conceive of any other, who could be seated upon the royal cushions.

ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੁ ਨਰਹ ਨਰੁ ਸਾਚਉ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥

नरक निवारणु नरह नरु साचउ साचै नाइ ॥

Narak nivaara(nn)u narah naru saachau saachai naai ||

The Supreme Man of men eradicates hell; He is True, and True is His Name.

ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਢੂਢਤ ਫਿਰਿ ਰਹੀ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

वणु त्रिणु ढूढत फिरि रही मन महि करउ बीचारु ॥

Va(nn)u tri(nn)u dhoodhat phiri rahee man mahi karau beechaaru ||

I wandered around searching for Him in the forests and meadows; I contemplate Him within my mind.

ਲਾਲ ਰਤਨ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਣਕੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਾਥਿ ਭੰਡਾਰੁ ॥

लाल रतन बहु माणकी सतिगुर हाथि भंडारु ॥

Laal ratan bahu maa(nn)akee satigur haathi bhanddaaru ||

The treasures of myriads of pearls, jewels and emeralds are in the hands of the True Guru.

ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਏਕੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

ऊतमु होवा प्रभु मिलै इक मनि एकै भाइ ॥

Utamu hovaa prbhu milai ik mani ekai bhaai ||

Meeting with God, I am exalted and elevated; I love the One Lord single-mindedly.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਪਰਥਾਇ ॥

नानक प्रीतम रसि मिले लाहा लै परथाइ ॥

Naanak preetam rasi mile laahaa lai parathaai ||

O Nanak, one who lovingly meets with his Beloved, earns profit in the world hereafter.

ਰਚਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

रचना राचि जिनि रची जिनि सिरिआ आकारु ॥

Rachanaa raachi jini rachee jini siriaa aakaaru ||

He who created and formed the creation, made your form as well.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥੪੬॥

गुरमुखि बेअंतु धिआईऐ अंतु न पारावारु ॥४६॥

Guramukhi beanttu dhiaaeeai anttu na paaraavaaru ||46||

As Gurmukh, meditate on the Infinite Lord, who has no end or limitation. ||46||


ੜਾੜੈ ਰੂੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸੋਈ ॥

ड़ाड़ै रूड़ा हरि जीउ सोई ॥

(Rr)aa(rr)ai roo(rr)aa hari jeeu soee ||

Rharha: The Dear Lord is beautiful;

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

तिसु बिनु राजा अवरु न कोई ॥

Tisu binu raajaa avaru na koee ||

There is no other king, except Him.

ੜਾੜੈ ਗਾਰੁੜੁ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

ड़ाड़ै गारुड़ु तुम सुणहु हरि वसै मन माहि ॥

(Rr)aa(rr)ai gaaru(rr)u tum su(nn)ahu hari vasai man maahi ||

Rharha: Listen to the spell, and the Lord will come to dwell in your mind.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਤੁ ਕੋ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਹਿ ॥

गुर परसादी हरि पाईऐ मतु को भरमि भुलाहि ॥

Gur parasaadee hari paaeeai matu ko bharami bhulaahi ||

By Guru's Grace, one finds the Lord; do not be deluded by doubt.

ਸੋ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

सो साहु साचा जिसु हरि धनु रासि ॥

So saahu saachaa jisu hari dhanu raasi ||

He alone is the true banker, who has the capital of the wealth of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥

गुरमुखि पूरा तिसु साबासि ॥

Guramukhi pooraa tisu saabaasi ||

The Gurmukh is perfect - applaud him!

ਰੂੜੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

रूड़ी बाणी हरि पाइआ गुर सबदी बीचारि ॥

Roo(rr)ee baa(nn)ee hari paaiaa gur sabadee beechaari ||

Through the beautiful Word of the Guru's Bani, the Lord is obtained; contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੪੭॥

आपु गइआ दुखु कटिआ हरि वरु पाइआ नारि ॥४७॥

Aapu gaiaa dukhu katiaa hari varu paaiaa naari ||47||

Self-conceit is eliminated, and pain is eradicated; the soul bride obtains her Husband Lord. ||47||


ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਧਨੁ ਕਾਚਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਛਾਰੁ ॥

सुइना रुपा संचीऐ धनु काचा बिखु छारु ॥

Suinaa rupaa sanccheeai dhanu kaachaa bikhu chhaaru ||

He hoards gold and silver, but this wealth is false and poisonous, nothing more than ashes.

ਸਾਹੁ ਸਦਾਏ ਸੰਚਿ ਧਨੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

साहु सदाए संचि धनु दुबिधा होइ खुआरु ॥

Saahu sadaae sancchi dhanu dubidhaa hoi khuaaru ||

He calls himself a banker, gathering wealth, but he is ruined by his dual-mindedness.

ਸਚਿਆਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਚਿਆ ਸਾਚਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲੁ ॥

सचिआरी सचु संचिआ साचउ नामु अमोलु ॥

Sachiaaree sachu sancchiaa saachau naamu amolu ||

The truthful ones gather Truth; the True Name is priceless.

ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਊਜਲੋ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੁ ॥

हरि निरमाइलु ऊजलो पति साची सचु बोलु ॥

Hari niramaailu ujalo pati saachee sachu bolu ||

The Lord is immaculate and pure; through Him, their honor is true, and their speech is true.

ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਤੂ ਤੂ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਤੂ ਹੰਸੁ ॥

साजनु मीतु सुजाणु तू तू सरवरु तू हंसु ॥

Saajanu meetu sujaa(nn)u too too saravaru too hanssu ||

You are my friend and companion, all-knowing Lord; You are the lake, and You are the swan.

ਸਾਚਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿਸੁ ॥

साचउ ठाकुरु मनि वसै हउ बलिहारी तिसु ॥

Saachau thaakuru mani vasai hau balihaaree tisu ||

I am a sacrifice to that being, whose mind is filled with the True Lord and Master.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

माइआ ममता मोहणी जिनि कीती सो जाणु ॥

Maaiaa mamataa moha(nn)ee jini keetee so jaa(nn)u ||

Know the One who created love and attachment to Maya, the Enticer.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪੮॥

बिखिआ अम्रितु एकु है बूझै पुरखु सुजाणु ॥४८॥

Bikhiaa ammmritu eku hai boojhai purakhu sujaa(nn)u ||48||

One who realizes the all-knowing Primal Lord, looks alike upon poison and nectar. ||48||


ਖਿਮਾ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਖਪਿ ਗਏ ਖੂਹਣਿ ਲਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥

खिमा विहूणे खपि गए खूहणि लख असंख ॥

Khimaa vihoo(nn)e khapi gae khooha(nn)i lakh asankkh ||

Without patience and forgiveness, countless hundreds of thousands have perished.

ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਗਣੀ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਸੰਖ ॥

गणत न आवै किउ गणी खपि खपि मुए बिसंख ॥

Ga(nn)at na aavai kiu ga(nn)ee khapi khapi mue bisankkh ||

Their numbers cannot be counted; how could I count them? Bothered and bewildered, uncounted numbers have died.

ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਖੂਲੈ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

खसमु पछाणै आपणा खूलै बंधु न पाइ ॥

Khasamu pachhaa(nn)ai aapa(nn)aa khoolai banddhu na paai ||

One who realizes his Lord and Master is set free, and not bound by chains.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਖਰਾ ਤੂ ਖਿਮਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਖ ਭਾਇ ॥

सबदि महली खरा तू खिमा सचु सुख भाइ ॥

Sabadi mahalee kharaa too khimaa sachu sukh bhaai ||

Through the Word of the Shabad, enter the Mansion of the Lord's Presence; you shall be blessed with patience, forgiveness, truth and peace.

ਖਰਚੁ ਖਰਾ ਧਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਵਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥

खरचु खरा धनु धिआनु तू आपे वसहि सरीरि ॥

Kharachu kharaa dhanu dhiaanu too aape vasahi sareeri ||

Partake of the true wealth of meditation, and the Lord Himself shall abide within your body.

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਧੀਰ ॥

मनि तनि मुखि जापै सदा गुण अंतरि मनि धीर ॥

Mani tani mukhi jaapai sadaa gu(nn) anttari mani dheer ||

With mind, body and mouth, chant His Glorious Virtues forever; courage and composure shall enter deep within your mind.

ਹਉਮੈ ਖਪੈ ਖਪਾਇਸੀ ਬੀਜਉ ਵਥੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

हउमै खपै खपाइसी बीजउ वथु विकारु ॥

Haumai khapai khapaaisee beejau vathu vikaaru ||

Through egotism, one is distracted and ruined; other than the Lord, all things are corrupt.

ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਅਲਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੪੯॥

जंत उपाइ विचि पाइअनु करता अलगु अपारु ॥४९॥

Jantt upaai vichi paaianu karataa alagu apaaru ||49||

Forming His creatures, He placed Himself within them; the Creator is unattached and infinite. ||49||


ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟੇ ਭੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

स्रिसटे भेउ न जाणै कोइ ॥

Srisate bheu na jaa(nn)ai koi ||

No one knows the mystery of the Creator of the World.

ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਾ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਹੋਇ ॥

स्रिसटा करै सु निहचउ होइ ॥

Srisataa karai su nihachau hoi ||

Whatever the Creator of the World does, is certain to occur.

ਸੰਪੈ ਕਉ ਈਸਰੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

स्मपै कउ ईसरु धिआईऐ ॥

Samppai kau eesaru dhiaaeeai ||

For wealth, some meditate on the Lord.

ਸੰਪੈ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਕੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

स्मपै पुरबि लिखे की पाईऐ ॥

Samppai purabi likhe kee paaeeai ||

By pre-ordained destiny, wealth is obtained.

ਸੰਪੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਚਾਕਰ ਚੋਰ ॥

स्मपै कारणि चाकर चोर ॥

Samppai kaara(nn)i chaakar chor ||

For the sake of wealth, some become servants or thieves.

ਸੰਪੈ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਹੋਰ ॥

स्मपै साथि न चालै होर ॥

Samppai saathi na chaalai hor ||

Wealth does not go along with them when they die; it passes into the hands of others.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਨਹੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

बिनु साचे नही दरगह मानु ॥

Binu saache nahee daragah maanu ||

Without Truth, honor is not obtained in the Court of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਛੁਟੈ ਨਿਦਾਨਿ ॥੫੦॥

हरि रसु पीवै छुटै निदानि ॥५०॥

Hari rasu peevai chhutai nidaani ||50||

Drinking in the subtle essence of the Lord, one is emancipated in the end. ||50||


ਹੇਰਤ ਹੇਰਤ ਹੇ ਸਖੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀ ਹੈਰਾਨੁ ॥

हेरत हेरत हे सखी होइ रही हैरानु ॥

Herat herat he sakhee hoi rahee hairaanu ||

Seeing and perceiving, O my companions, I am wonder-struck and amazed.

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੀ ਮੈ ਮੁਈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

हउ हउ करती मै मुई सबदि रवै मनि गिआनु ॥

Hau hau karatee mai muee sabadi ravai mani giaanu ||

My egotism, which proclaimed itself in possessiveness and self-conceit, is dead. My mind chants the Word of the Shabad, and attains spiritual wisdom.

ਹਾਰ ਡੋਰ ਕੰਕਨ ਘਣੇ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

हार डोर कंकन घणे करि थाकी सीगारु ॥

Haar dor kankkan gha(nn)e kari thaakee seegaaru ||

I am so tired of wearing all these necklaces, hair-ties and bracelets, and decorating myself.

ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਗਲ ਗੁਣਾ ਗਲਿ ਹਾਰੁ ॥

मिलि प्रीतम सुखु पाइआ सगल गुणा गलि हारु ॥

Mili preetam sukhu paaiaa sagal gu(nn)aa gali haaru ||

Meeting with my Beloved, I have found peace; now, I wear the necklace of total virtue.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

नानक गुरमुखि पाईऐ हरि सिउ प्रीति पिआरु ॥

Naanak guramukhi paaeeai hari siu preeti piaaru ||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh attains the Lord, with love and affection.

ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

हरि बिनु किनि सुखु पाइआ देखहु मनि बीचारि ॥

Hari binu kini sukhu paaiaa dekhahu mani beechaari ||

Without the Lord, who has found peace? Reflect upon this in your mind, and see.

ਹਰਿ ਪੜਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੁਝਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਖਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

हरि पड़णा हरि बुझणा हरि सिउ रखहु पिआरु ॥

Hari pa(rr)a(nn)aa hari bujha(nn)aa hari siu rakhahu piaaru ||

Read about the Lord, understand the Lord, and enshrine love for the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੫੧॥

हरि जपीऐ हरि धिआईऐ हरि का नामु अधारु ॥५१॥

Hari japeeai hari dhiaaeeai hari kaa naamu adhaaru ||51||

Chant the Lord's Name, and meditate on the Lord; hold tight to the Support of the Name of the Lord. ||51||


ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਹੇ ਸਖੀ ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥

लेखु न मिटई हे सखी जो लिखिआ करतारि ॥

Lekhu na mitaee he sakhee jo likhiaa karataari ||

The inscription inscribed by the Creator Lord cannot be erased, O my companions.

ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪਗੁ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

आपे कारणु जिनि कीआ करि किरपा पगु धारि ॥

Aape kaara(nn)u jini keeaa kari kirapaa pagu dhaari ||

He who created the universe, in His Mercy, installs His Feet within us.

ਕਰਤੇ ਹਥਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

करते हथि वडिआईआ बूझहु गुर बीचारि ॥

Karate hathi vadiaaeeaa boojhahu gur beechaari ||

Glorious greatness rests in the Hands of the Creator; reflect upon the Guru, and understand this.

ਲਿਖਿਆ ਫੇਰਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਐ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੀ ਤਿਉ ਸਾਰਿ ॥

लिखिआ फेरि न सकीऐ जिउ भावी तिउ सारि ॥

Likhiaa pheri na sakeeai jiu bhaavee tiu saari ||

This inscription cannot be challenged. As it pleases You, You care for me.

ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

नदरि तेरी सुखु पाइआ नानक सबदु वीचारि ॥

Nadari teree sukhu paaiaa naanak sabadu veechaari ||

By Your Glance of Grace, I have found peace; O Nanak, reflect upon the Shabad.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਉਬਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

मनमुख भूले पचि मुए उबरे गुर बीचारि ॥

Manamukh bhoole pachi mue ubare gur beechaari ||

The self-willed manmukhs are confused; they rot away and die. Only by reflecting upon the Guru can they be saved.

ਜਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

जि पुरखु नदरि न आवई तिस का किआ करि कहिआ जाइ ॥

Ji purakhu nadari na aavaee tis kaa kiaa kari kahiaa jaai ||

What can anyone say, about that Primal Lord, who cannot be seen?

ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦਿਤਾ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥੫੨॥

बलिहारी गुर आपणे जिनि हिरदै दिता दिखाइ ॥५२॥

Balihaaree gur aapa(nn)e jini hiradai ditaa dikhaai ||52||

I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has revealed Him to me, within my own heart. ||52||


ਪਾਧਾ ਪੜਿਆ ਆਖੀਐ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਚਰੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

पाधा पड़िआ आखीऐ बिदिआ बिचरै सहजि सुभाइ ॥

Paadhaa pa(rr)iaa aakheeai bidiaa bicharai sahaji subhaai ||

That Pandit, that religious scholar, is said to be well-educated, if he contemplates knowledge with intuitive ease.

ਬਿਦਿਆ ਸੋਧੈ ਤਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

बिदिआ सोधै ततु लहै राम नाम लिव लाइ ॥

Bidiaa sodhai tatu lahai raam naam liv laai ||

Considering his knowledge, he finds the essence of reality, and lovingly focuses his attention on the Name of the Lord.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

मनमुखु बिदिआ बिक्रदा बिखु खटे बिखु खाइ ॥

Manamukhu bidiaa bikrdaa bikhu khate bikhu khaai ||

The self-willed manmukh sells his knowledge; he earns poison, and eats poison.

ਮੂਰਖੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਈ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਨਹ ਕਾਇ ॥੫੩॥

मूरखु सबदु न चीनई सूझ बूझ नह काइ ॥५३॥

Moorakhu sabadu na cheenaee soojh boojh nah kaai ||53||

The fool does not think of the Word of the Shabad. He has no understanding, no comprehension. ||53||


ਪਾਧਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀਐ ਚਾਟੜਿਆ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥

पाधा गुरमुखि आखीऐ चाटड़िआ मति देइ ॥

Paadhaa guramukhi aakheeai chaata(rr)iaa mati dei ||

That Pandit is called Gurmukh, who imparts understanding to his students.

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਗਰਹੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲੇਇ ॥

नामु समालहु नामु संगरहु लाहा जग महि लेइ ॥

Naamu samaalahu naamu sanggarahu laahaa jag mahi lei ||

Contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord; gather in the Naam, and earn the true profit in this world.

ਸਚੀ ਪਟੀ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

सची पटी सचु मनि पड़ीऐ सबदु सु सारु ॥

Sachee patee sachu mani pa(rr)eeai sabadu su saaru ||

With the true notebook of the true mind, study the most sublime Word of the Shabad.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗਲਿ ਹਾਰੁ ॥੫੪॥੧॥

नानक सो पड़िआ सो पंडितु बीना जिसु राम नामु गलि हारु ॥५४॥१॥

Naanak so pa(rr)iaa so pandditu beenaa jisu raam naamu gali haaru ||54||1||

O Nanak, he alone is learned, and he alone is a wise Pandit, who wears the necklace of the Lord's Name. ||54||1||

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਸਿਧ ਸਭਾ ਕਰਿ ਆਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਜੈਕਾਰੋ ॥

सिध सभा करि आसणि बैठे संत सभा जैकारो ॥

Sidh sabhaa kari aasa(nn)i baithe santt sabhaa jaikaaro ||

The Siddhas formed an assembly; sitting in their Yogic postures, they shouted, ""Salute this gathering of Saints.""

ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੋ ॥

तिसु आगै रहरासि हमारी साचा अपर अपारो ॥

Tisu aagai raharaasi hamaaree saachaa apar apaaro ||

I offer my salutation to the One who is true, infinite and incomparably beautiful.

ਮਸਤਕੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਧਰੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਦੇਉ ॥

मसतकु काटि धरी तिसु आगै तनु मनु आगै देउ ॥

Masataku kaati dharee tisu aagai tanu manu aagai deu ||

I cut off my head, and offer it to Him; I dedicate my body and mind to Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਹਜ ਭਾਇ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਉ ॥੧॥

नानक संतु मिलै सचु पाईऐ सहज भाइ जसु लेउ ॥१॥

Naanak santtu milai sachu paaeeai sahaj bhaai jasu leu ||1||

O Nanak, meeting with the Saints, Truth is obtained, and one is spontaneously blessed with distinction. ||1||


ਕਿਆ ਭਵੀਐ ਸਚਿ ਸੂਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

किआ भवीऐ सचि सूचा होइ ॥

Kiaa bhaveeai sachi soochaa hoi ||

What is the use of wandering around? Purity comes only through Truth.

ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साच सबद बिनु मुकति न कोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saach sabad binu mukati na koi ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the True Word of the Shabad, no one finds liberation. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਵਨ ਤੁਮੇ ਕਿਆ ਨਾਉ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਕਉਨੁ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਸੁਆਓ ॥

कवन तुमे किआ नाउ तुमारा कउनु मारगु कउनु सुआओ ॥

Kavan tume kiaa naau tumaaraa kaunu maaragu kaunu suaao ||

"Who are you? What is your name? What is your way? What is your goal?

ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹਉ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਹਉ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਓ ॥

साचु कहउ अरदासि हमारी हउ संत जना बलि जाओ ॥

Saachu kahau aradaasi hamaaree hau santt janaa bali jaao ||

We pray that you will answer us truthfully; we are a sacrifice to the humble Saints.

ਕਹ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਕਹ ਰਹੀਐ ਬਾਲੇ ਕਹ ਆਵਹੁ ਕਹ ਜਾਹੋ ॥

कह बैसहु कह रहीऐ बाले कह आवहु कह जाहो ॥

Kah baisahu kah raheeai baale kah aavahu kah jaaho ||

Where is your seat? Where do you live, boy? Where did you come from, and where are you going?

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਕਿਆ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਰਾਹੋ ॥੨॥

नानकु बोलै सुणि बैरागी किआ तुमारा राहो ॥२॥

Naanaku bolai su(nn)i bairaagee kiaa tumaaraa raaho ||2||

Tell us, Nanak - the detached Siddhas wait to hear your reply. What is your path?"" ||2||


ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਚਾਲਹਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ॥

घटि घटि बैसि निरंतरि रहीऐ चालहि सतिगुर भाए ॥

Ghati ghati baisi niranttari raheeai chaalahi satigur bhaae ||

He dwells deep within the nucleus of each and every heart. This is my seat and my home. I walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru.

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਏ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਏ ॥

सहजे आए हुकमि सिधाए नानक सदा रजाए ॥

Sahaje aae hukami sidhaae naanak sadaa rajaae ||

I came from the Celestial Lord God; I go wherever He orders me to go. I am Nanak, forever under the Command of His Will.

ਆਸਣਿ ਬੈਸਣਿ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਐਸੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

आसणि बैसणि थिरु नाराइणु ऐसी गुरमति पाए ॥

Aasa(nn)i baisa(nn)i thiru naaraai(nn)u aisee guramati paae ||

I sit in the posture of the eternal, imperishable Lord. These are the Teachings I have received from the Guru.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि बूझै आपु पछाणै सचे सचि समाए ॥३॥

Guramukhi boojhai aapu pachhaa(nn)ai sache sachi samaae ||3||

As Gurmukh, I have come to understand and realize myself; I merge in the Truest of the True. ||3||


ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਾਰੋ ॥

दुनीआ सागरु दुतरु कहीऐ किउ करि पाईऐ पारो ॥

Duneeaa saagaru dutaru kaheeai kiu kari paaeeai paaro ||

"The world-ocean is treacherous and impassable; how can one cross over?

ਚਰਪਟੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਅਉਧੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥

चरपटु बोलै अउधू नानक देहु सचा बीचारो ॥

Charapatu bolai audhoo naanak dehu sachaa beechaaro ||

O Nanak, think it over, and give us your true reply." Charpat the Yogi asks.

ਆਪੇ ਆਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਸਮਝੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਉਤਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

आपे आखै आपे समझै तिसु किआ उतरु दीजै ॥

Aape aakhai aape samajhai tisu kiaa utaru deejai ||

What answer can I give to someone, who claims to understand himself?

ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਰਗਰਾਮੀ ਤੁਝੁ ਕਿਆ ਬੈਸਣੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੪॥

साचु कहहु तुम पारगरामी तुझु किआ बैसणु दीजै ॥४॥

Saachu kahahu tum paaragaraamee tujhu kiaa baisa(nn)u deejai ||4||

I speak the Truth; if you have already crossed over, how can I argue with you? ||4||


ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਮੁਰਗਾਈ ਨੈ ਸਾਣੇ ॥

जैसे जल महि कमलु निरालमु मुरगाई नै साणे ॥

Jaise jal mahi kamalu niraalamu muragaaee nai saa(nn)e ||

The lotus flower floats untouched upon the surface of the water, and the duck swims through the stream;

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਵ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੇ ॥

सुरति सबदि भव सागरु तरीऐ नानक नामु वखाणे ॥

Surati sabadi bhav saagaru tareeai naanak naamu vakhaa(nn)e ||

With one's consciousness focused on the Word of the Shabad, one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. O Nanak, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਰਹਹਿ ਇਕਾਂਤਿ ਏਕੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੋ ॥

रहहि इकांति एको मनि वसिआ आसा माहि निरासो ॥

Rahahi ikaanti eko mani vasiaa aasaa maahi niraaso ||

One who lives alone, as a hermit, enshrining the One Lord in his mind, remaining unaffected by hope in the midst of hope,

ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਏ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੋ ॥੫॥

अगमु अगोचरु देखि दिखाए नानकु ता का दासो ॥५॥

Agamu agocharu dekhi dikhaae naanaku taa kaa daaso ||5||

Sees and inspires others to see the inaccessible, unfathomable Lord. Nanak is his slave. ||5||


ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਪੂਛਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥

सुणि सुआमी अरदासि हमारी पूछउ साचु बीचारो ॥

Su(nn)i suaamee aradaasi hamaaree poochhau saachu beechaaro ||

"Listen, Lord, to our prayer. We seek your true opinion.

ਰੋਸੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ਉਤਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਦੁਆਰੋ ॥

रोसु न कीजै उतरु दीजै किउ पाईऐ गुर दुआरो ॥

Rosu na keejai utaru deejai kiu paaeeai gur duaaro ||

Don't be angry with us - please tell us: How can we find the Guru's Door?"

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਚਲਤਉ ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੋ ॥

इहु मनु चलतउ सच घरि बैसै नानक नामु अधारो ॥

Ihu manu chalatau sach ghari baisai naanak naamu adhaaro ||

This fickle mind sits in its true home, O Nanak, through the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥੬॥

आपे मेलि मिलाए करता लागै साचि पिआरो ॥६॥

Aape meli milaae karataa laagai saachi piaaro ||6||

The Creator Himself unites us in Union, and inspires us to love the Truth. ||6||


ਹਾਟੀ ਬਾਟੀ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਰੂਖਿ ਬਿਰਖਿ ਉਦਿਆਨੇ ॥

हाटी बाटी रहहि निराले रूखि बिरखि उदिआने ॥

Haatee baatee rahahi niraale rookhi birakhi udiaane ||

"Away from stores and highways, we live in the woods, among plants and trees.

ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਅਹਾਰੋ ਖਾਈਐ ਅਉਧੂ ਬੋਲੈ ਗਿਆਨੇ ॥

कंद मूलु अहारो खाईऐ अउधू बोलै गिआने ॥

Kandd moolu ahaaro khaaeeai audhoo bolai giaane ||

For food, we take fruits and roots. This is the spiritual wisdom spoken by the renunciates.

ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਈਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕਾਈ ॥

तीरथि नाईऐ सुखु फलु पाईऐ मैलु न लागै काई ॥

Teerathi naaeeai sukhu phalu paaeeai mailu na laagai kaaee ||

We bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and obtain the fruits of peace; not even an iota of filth sticks to us.

ਗੋਰਖ ਪੂਤੁ ਲੋਹਾਰੀਪਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਈ ॥੭॥

गोरख पूतु लोहारीपा बोलै जोग जुगति बिधि साई ॥७॥

Gorakh pootu lohaareepaa bolai jog jugati bidhi saaee ||7||

this is the Way of Yoga." Luhaareepaa, the disciple of Gorakh says. ||7||


ਹਾਟੀ ਬਾਟੀ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਡੋੁਲਾਈ ॥

हाटी बाटी नीद न आवै पर घरि चितु न डोलाई ॥

Haatee baatee need na aavai par ghari chitu na daolaaee ||

In the stores and on the road, do not sleep; do not let your consciousness covet anyone else's home.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨੁ ਟੇਕ ਨ ਟਿਕਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

बिनु नावै मनु टेक न टिकई नानक भूख न जाई ॥

Binu naavai manu tek na tikaee naanak bhookh na jaaee ||

Without the Name, the mind has no firm support; O Nanak, this hunger never departs.

ਹਾਟੁ ਪਟਣੁ ਘਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੋ ॥

हाटु पटणु घरु गुरू दिखाइआ सहजे सचु वापारो ॥

Haatu pata(nn)u gharu guroo dikhaaiaa sahaje sachu vaapaaro ||

The Guru has revealed the stores and the city within the home of my own heart, where I intuitively carry on the true trade.

ਖੰਡਿਤ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਅਲਪ ਅਹਾਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥੮॥

खंडित निद्रा अलप अहारं नानक ततु बीचारो ॥८॥

Khanddit nidraa alap ahaarann naanak tatu beechaaro ||8||

Sleep little, and eat little; O Nanak, this is the essence of wisdom. ||8||


ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹੁ ਜੋਗਿੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਖਿੰਥਾ ॥

दरसनु भेख करहु जोगिंद्रा मुंद्रा झोली खिंथा ॥

Darasanu bhekh karahu joginddraa munddraa jholee khintthaa ||

"Wear the robes of the sect of Yogis who follow Gorakh; put on the ear-rings, begging wallet and patched coat.

ਬਾਰਹ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਇਕ ਪੰਥਾ ॥

बारह अंतरि एकु सरेवहु खटु दरसन इक पंथा ॥

Baarah anttari eku sarevahu khatu darasan ik pantthaa ||

Among the twelve schools of Yoga, ours is the highest; among the six schools of philosophy, ours is the best path.

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਈਐ ॥

इन बिधि मनु समझाईऐ पुरखा बाहुड़ि चोट न खाईऐ ॥

In bidhi manu samajhaaeeai purakhaa baahu(rr)i chot na khaaeeai ||

This is the way to instruct the mind, so you will never suffer beatings again.""

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੯॥

नानकु बोलै गुरमुखि बूझै जोग जुगति इव पाईऐ ॥९॥

Naanaku bolai guramukhi boojhai jog jugati iv paaeeai ||9||

Nanak speaks: the Gurmukh understands; this is the way that Yoga is attained. ||9||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰੀ ॥

अंतरि सबदु निरंतरि मुद्रा हउमै ममता दूरि करी ॥

Anttari sabadu niranttari mudraa haumai mamataa doori karee ||

Let constant absorption in the Word of the Shabad deep within be your ear-rings; eradicate egotism and attachment.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁ ਸਮਝ ਪਰੀ ॥

कामु क्रोधु अहंकारु निवारै गुर कै सबदि सु समझ परी ॥

Kaamu krodhu ahankkaaru nivaarai gur kai sabadi su samajh paree ||

Discard sexual desire, anger and egotism, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, attain true understanding.

ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾਰੈ ਏਕੁ ਹਰੀ ॥

खिंथा झोली भरिपुरि रहिआ नानक तारै एकु हरी ॥

Khintthaa jholee bharipuri rahiaa naanak taarai eku haree ||

For your patched coat and begging bowl, see the Lord God pervading and permeating everywhere; O Nanak, the One Lord will carry you across.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਈ ਪਰਖੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਖਰੀ ॥੧੦॥

साचा साहिबु साची नाई परखै गुर की बात खरी ॥१०॥

Saachaa saahibu saachee naaee parakhai gur kee baat kharee ||10||

True is our Lord and Master, and True is His Name. Analyze it, and you shall find the Word of the Guru to be True. ||10||


ਊਂਧਉ ਖਪਰੁ ਪੰਚ ਭੂ ਟੋਪੀ ॥

ऊंधउ खपरु पंच भू टोपी ॥

Undhau khaparu pancch bhoo topee ||

Let your mind turn away in detachment from the world, and let this be your begging bowl. Let the lessons of the five elements be your cap.

ਕਾਂਇਆ ਕੜਾਸਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਜਾਗੋਟੀ ॥

कांइआ कड़ासणु मनु जागोटी ॥

Kaaniaa ka(rr)aasa(nn)u manu jaagotee ||

Let the body be your meditation mat, and the mind your loin cloth.

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

सतु संतोखु संजमु है नालि ॥

Satu santtokhu sanjjamu hai naali ||

Let truth, contentment and self-discipline be your companions.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि नामु समालि ॥११॥

Naanak guramukhi naamu samaali ||11||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh dwells on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||11||


ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥

कवनु सु गुपता कवनु सु मुकता ॥

Kavanu su gupataa kavanu su mukataa ||

"Who is hidden? Who is liberated?

ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥

कवनु सु अंतरि बाहरि जुगता ॥

Kavanu su anttari baahari jugataa ||

Who is united, inwardly and outwardly?

ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਆਵੈ ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

कवनु सु आवै कवनु सु जाइ ॥

Kavanu su aavai kavanu su jaai ||

Who comes, and who goes?

ਕਵਨੁ ਸੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੨॥

कवनु सु त्रिभवणि रहिआ समाइ ॥१२॥

Kavanu su tribhava(nn)i rahiaa samaai ||12||

Who is permeating and pervading the three worlds?"" ||12||


ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਗੁਪਤਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥

घटि घटि गुपता गुरमुखि मुकता ॥

Ghati ghati gupataa guramukhi mukataa ||

He is hidden within each and every heart. The Gurmukh is liberated.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥

अंतरि बाहरि सबदि सु जुगता ॥

Anttari baahari sabadi su jugataa ||

Through the Word of the Shabad, one is united, inwardly and outwardly.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

मनमुखि बिनसै आवै जाइ ॥

Manamukhi binasai aavai jaai ||

The self-willed manmukh perishes, and comes and goes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੩॥

नानक गुरमुखि साचि समाइ ॥१३॥

Naanak guramukhi saachi samaai ||13||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh merges in Truth. ||13||


ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਖਾਧਾ ॥

किउ करि बाधा सरपनि खाधा ॥

Kiu kari baadhaa sarapani khaadhaa ||

"How is one placed in bondage, and consumed by the serpent of Maya?

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਖੋਇਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਧਾ ॥

किउ करि खोइआ किउ करि लाधा ॥

Kiu kari khoiaa kiu kari laadhaa ||

How does one lose, and how does one gain?

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥

किउ करि निरमलु किउ करि अंधिआरा ॥

Kiu kari niramalu kiu kari anddhiaaraa ||

How does one become immaculate and pure? How is the darkness of ignorance removed?

ਇਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੧੪॥

इहु ततु बीचारै सु गुरू हमारा ॥१४॥

Ihu tatu beechaarai su guroo hamaaraa ||14||

One who understands this essence of reality is our Guru."" ||14||


ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਖਾਧਾ ॥

दुरमति बाधा सरपनि खाधा ॥

Duramati baadhaa sarapani khaadhaa ||

Man is bound by evil-mindedness, and consumed by Maya, the serpent.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਧਾ ॥

मनमुखि खोइआ गुरमुखि लाधा ॥

Manamukhi khoiaa guramukhi laadhaa ||

The self-willed manmukh loses, and the Gurmukh gains.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

सतिगुरु मिलै अंधेरा जाइ ॥

Satiguru milai anddheraa jaai ||

Meeting the True Guru, darkness is dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧੫॥

नानक हउमै मेटि समाइ ॥१५॥

Naanak haumai meti samaai ||15||

O Nanak, eradicating egotism, one merges in the Lord. ||15||


ਸੁੰਨ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਬੰਧੁ ॥

सुंन निरंतरि दीजै बंधु ॥

Sunn niranttari deejai banddhu ||

Focused deep within, in perfect absorption,

ਉਡੈ ਨ ਹੰਸਾ ਪੜੈ ਨ ਕੰਧੁ ॥

उडै न हंसा पड़ै न कंधु ॥

Udai na hanssaa pa(rr)ai na kanddhu ||

The soul-swan does not fly away, and the body-wall does not collapse.

ਸਹਜ ਗੁਫਾ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚਾ ॥

सहज गुफा घरु जाणै साचा ॥

Sahaj guphaa gharu jaa(nn)ai saachaa ||

Then, one knows that his true home is in the cave of intuitive poise.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਚਾ ॥੧੬॥

नानक साचे भावै साचा ॥१६॥

Naanak saache bhaavai saachaa ||16||

O Nanak, the True Lord loves those who are truthful. ||16||


ਕਿਸੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿਓ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥

किसु कारणि ग्रिहु तजिओ उदासी ॥

Kisu kaara(nn)i grihu tajio udaasee ||

"Why have you left your house and become a wandering Udaasee?

ਕਿਸੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਇਹੁ ਭੇਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥

किसु कारणि इहु भेखु निवासी ॥

Kisu kaara(nn)i ihu bhekhu nivaasee ||

Why have you adopted these religious robes?

ਕਿਸੁ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥

किसु वखर के तुम वणजारे ॥

Kisu vakhar ke tum va(nn)ajaare ||

What merchandise do you trade?

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਥੁ ਲੰਘਾਵਹੁ ਪਾਰੇ ॥੧੭॥

किउ करि साथु लंघावहु पारे ॥१७॥

Kiu kari saathu langghaavahu paare ||17||

How will you carry others across with you?"" ||17||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਤ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥

गुरमुखि खोजत भए उदासी ॥

Guramukhi khojat bhae udaasee ||

I became a wandering Udaasee, searching for the Gurmukhs.

ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਭੇਖ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥

दरसन कै ताई भेख निवासी ॥

Darasan kai taaee bhekh nivaasee ||

I have adopted these robes seeking the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan.

ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਹਮ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥

साच वखर के हम वणजारे ॥

Saach vakhar ke ham va(nn)ajaare ||

I trade in the merchandise of Truth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰੇ ॥੧੮॥

नानक गुरमुखि उतरसि पारे ॥१८॥

Naanak guramukhi utarasi paare ||18||

O Nanak, as Gurmukh, I carry others across. ||18||


ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਟਾਇਆ ॥

कितु बिधि पुरखा जनमु वटाइआ ॥

Kitu bidhi purakhaa janamu vataaiaa ||

"How have you changed the course of your life?

ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਤੁਝੁ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

काहे कउ तुझु इहु मनु लाइआ ॥

Kaahe kau tujhu ihu manu laaiaa ||

With what have you linked your mind?

ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਖਾਈ ॥

कितु बिधि आसा मनसा खाई ॥

Kitu bidhi aasaa manasaa khaaee ||

How have you subdued your hopes and desires?

ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

कितु बिधि जोति निरंतरि पाई ॥

Kitu bidhi joti niranttari paaee ||

How have you found the Light deep within your nucleus?

ਬਿਨੁ ਦੰਤਾ ਕਿਉ ਖਾਈਐ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

बिनु दंता किउ खाईऐ सारु ॥

Binu danttaa kiu khaaeeai saaru ||

Without teeth, how can you eat iron?
