ਤਬ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤਿ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਤੁ ਠਾਇ ॥

तब सिव सकति कहहु कितु ठाइ ॥

Tab siv sakati kahahu kitu thaai ||

Then where was mind and where was matter - where was Shiva and Shakti?

ਜਬ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੈ ॥

जब आपहि आपि अपनी जोति धरै ॥

Jab aapahi aapi apanee joti dharai ||

When He held His Own Light unto Himself,

ਤਬ ਕਵਨ ਨਿਡਰੁ ਕਵਨ ਕਤ ਡਰੈ ॥

तब कवन निडरु कवन कत डरै ॥

Tab kavan nidaru kavan kat darai ||

Then who was fearless, and who was afraid?

ਆਪਨ ਚਲਿਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ ॥

आपन चलित आपि करनैहार ॥

Aapan chalit aapi karanaihaar ||

He Himself is the Performer in His own plays;

ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰ ॥੨॥

नानक ठाकुर अगम अपार ॥२॥

Naanak thaakur agam apaar ||2||

O Nanak, the Lord Master is Unfathomable and Infinite. ||2||


ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸੁਖ ਆਪਨ ਆਸਨ ॥

अबिनासी सुख आपन आसन ॥

Abinaasee sukh aapan aasan ||

When the Immortal Lord was seated at ease,

ਤਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਹੁ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ॥

तह जनम मरन कहु कहा बिनासन ॥

Tah janam maran kahu kahaa binaasan ||

Then where was birth, death and dissolution?

ਜਬ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

जब पूरन करता प्रभु सोइ ॥

Jab pooran karataa prbhu soi ||

When there was only God, the Perfect Creator,

ਤਬ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

तब जम की त्रास कहहु किसु होइ ॥

Tab jam kee traas kahahu kisu hoi ||

Then who was afraid of death?

ਜਬ ਅਬਿਗਤ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਏਕਾ ॥

जब अबिगत अगोचर प्रभ एका ॥

Jab abigat agochar prbh ekaa ||

When there was only the One Lord, unmanifest and incomprehensible,

ਤਬ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਪੂਛਤ ਲੇਖਾ ॥

तब चित्र गुपत किसु पूछत लेखा ॥

Tab chitr gupat kisu poochhat lekhaa ||

Then who was called to account by the recording scribes of the conscious and the subconscious?

ਜਬ ਨਾਥ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਅਗਾਧੇ ॥

जब नाथ निरंजन अगोचर अगाधे ॥

Jab naath niranjjan agochar agaadhe ||

When there was only the Immaculate, Incomprehensible, Unfathomable Master,

ਤਬ ਕਉਨ ਛੁਟੇ ਕਉਨ ਬੰਧਨ ਬਾਧੇ ॥

तब कउन छुटे कउन बंधन बाधे ॥

Tab kaun chhute kaun banddhan baadhe ||

Then who was emancipated, and who was held in bondage?

ਆਪਨ ਆਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਚਰਜਾ ॥

आपन आप आप ही अचरजा ॥

Aapan aap aap hee acharajaa ||

He Himself, in and of Himself, is the most wonderful.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਨ ਰੂਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਪਰਜਾ ॥੩॥

नानक आपन रूप आप ही उपरजा ॥३॥

Naanak aapan roop aap hee uparajaa ||3||

O Nanak, He Himself created His Own Form. ||3||


ਜਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਤਾ ॥

जह निरमल पुरखु पुरख पति होता ॥

Jah niramal purakhu purakh pati hotaa ||

When there was only the Immaculate Being, the Lord of beings,

ਤਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਧੋਤਾ ॥

तह बिनु मैलु कहहु किआ धोता ॥

Tah binu mailu kahahu kiaa dhotaa ||

There was no filth, so what was there to be washed clean?

ਜਹ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨਿਰਬਾਨ ॥

जह निरंजन निरंकार निरबान ॥

Jah niranjjan nirankkaar nirabaan ||

When there was only the Pure, Formless Lord in Nirvaanaa,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨ ਕਉ ਮਾਨ ਕਉਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥

तह कउन कउ मान कउन अभिमान ॥

Tah kaun kau maan kaun abhimaan ||

Then who was honored, and who was dishonored?

ਜਹ ਸਰੂਪ ਕੇਵਲ ਜਗਦੀਸ ॥

जह सरूप केवल जगदीस ॥

Jah saroop keval jagadees ||

When there was only the Form of the Lord of the Universe,

ਤਹ ਛਲ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਲਗਤ ਕਹੁ ਕੀਸ ॥

तह छल छिद्र लगत कहु कीस ॥

Tah chhal chhidr lagat kahu kees ||

Then who was tainted by fraud and sin?

ਜਹ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

जह जोति सरूपी जोति संगि समावै ॥

Jah joti saroopee joti sanggi samaavai ||

When the Embodiment of Light was immersed in His Own Light,

ਤਹ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਕਵਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ॥

तह किसहि भूख कवनु त्रिपतावै ॥

Tah kisahi bhookh kavanu tripataavai ||

Then who was hungry, and who was satisfied?

ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥

करन करावन करनैहारु ॥

Karan karaavan karanaihaaru ||

He is the Cause of causes, the Creator Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਸੁਮਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

नानक करते का नाहि सुमारु ॥४॥

Naanak karate kaa naahi sumaaru ||4||

O Nanak, the Creator is beyond calculation. ||4||


ਜਬ ਅਪਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਨਾਈ ॥

जब अपनी सोभा आपन संगि बनाई ॥

Jab apanee sobhaa aapan sanggi banaaee ||

When His Glory was contained within Himself,

ਤਬ ਕਵਨ ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ॥

तब कवन माइ बाप मित्र सुत भाई ॥

Tab kavan maai baap mitr sut bhaaee ||

Then who was mother, father, friend, child or sibling?

ਜਹ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਪਰਬੀਨ ॥

जह सरब कला आपहि परबीन ॥

Jah sarab kalaa aapahi parabeen ||

When all power and wisdom was latent within Him,

ਤਹ ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਕਹਾ ਕੋਊ ਚੀਨ ॥

तह बेद कतेब कहा कोऊ चीन ॥

Tah bed kateb kahaa kou cheen ||

Then where were the Vedas and the scriptures, and who was there to read them?

ਜਬ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ॥

जब आपन आपु आपि उरि धारै ॥

Jab aapan aapu aapi uri dhaarai ||

When He kept Himself, All-in-all, unto His Own Heart,

ਤਉ ਸਗਨ ਅਪਸਗਨ ਕਹਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥

तउ सगन अपसगन कहा बीचारै ॥

Tau sagan apasagan kahaa beechaarai ||

Then who considered omens to be good or bad?

ਜਹ ਆਪਨ ਊਚ ਆਪਨ ਆਪਿ ਨੇਰਾ ॥

जह आपन ऊच आपन आपि नेरा ॥

Jah aapan uch aapan aapi neraa ||

When He Himself was lofty, and He Himself was near at hand,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਚੇਰਾ ॥

तह कउन ठाकुरु कउनु कहीऐ चेरा ॥

Tah kaun thaakuru kaunu kaheeai cheraa ||

Then who was called master, and who was called disciple?

ਬਿਸਮਨ ਬਿਸਮ ਰਹੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥

बिसमन बिसम रहे बिसमाद ॥

Bisaman bisam rahe bisamaad ||

We are wonder-struck at the wondrous wonder of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਪਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਆਪਿ ॥੫॥

नानक अपनी गति जानहु आपि ॥५॥

Naanak apanee gati jaanahu aapi ||5||

O Nanak, He alone knows His own state. ||5||


ਜਹ ਅਛਲ ਅਛੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

जह अछल अछेद अभेद समाइआ ॥

Jah achhal achhed abhed samaaiaa ||

When the Undeceiveable, Impenetrable, Inscrutable One was self-absorbed,

ਊਹਾ ਕਿਸਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

ऊहा किसहि बिआपत माइआ ॥

Uhaa kisahi biaapat maaiaa ||

Then who was swayed by Maya?

ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਹਿ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥

आपस कउ आपहि आदेसु ॥

Aapas kau aapahi aadesu ||

When He paid homage to Himself,

ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਪਰਵੇਸੁ ॥

तिहु गुण का नाही परवेसु ॥

Tihu gu(nn) kaa naahee paravesu ||

Then the three qualities were not prevailing.

ਜਹ ਏਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਏਕ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥

जह एकहि एक एक भगवंता ॥

Jah ekahi ek ek bhagavanttaa ||

When there was only the One, the One and Only Lord God,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨੁ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥

तह कउनु अचिंतु किसु लागै चिंता ॥

Tah kaunu achinttu kisu laagai chinttaa ||

Then who was not anxious, and who felt anxiety?

ਜਹ ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਤੀਆਰਾ ॥

जह आपन आपु आपि पतीआरा ॥

Jah aapan aapu aapi pateeaaraa ||

When He Himself was satisfied with Himself,

ਤਹ ਕਉਨੁ ਕਥੈ ਕਉਨੁ ਸੁਨਨੈਹਾਰਾ ॥

तह कउनु कथै कउनु सुननैहारा ॥

Tah kaunu kathai kaunu sunanaihaaraa ||

Then who spoke and who listened?

ਬਹੁ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਊਚ ਤੇ ਊਚਾ ॥

बहु बेअंत ऊच ते ऊचा ॥

Bahu beantt uch te uchaa ||

He is vast and infinite, the highest of the high.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਆਪਹਿ ਪਹੂਚਾ ॥੬॥

नानक आपस कउ आपहि पहूचा ॥६॥

Naanak aapas kau aapahi pahoochaa ||6||

O Nanak, He alone can reach Himself. ||6||


ਜਹ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਅਕਾਰੁ ॥

जह आपि रचिओ परपंचु अकारु ॥

Jah aapi rachio parapancchu akaaru ||

When He Himself fashioned the visible world of the creation,

ਤਿਹੁ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥

तिहु गुण महि कीनो बिसथारु ॥

Tihu gu(nn) mahi keeno bisathaaru ||

He made the world subject to the three dispositions.

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਤਹ ਭਈ ਕਹਾਵਤ ॥

पापु पुंनु तह भई कहावत ॥

Paapu punnu tah bhaee kahaavat ||

Sin and virtue then began to be spoken of.

ਕੋਊ ਨਰਕ ਕੋਊ ਸੁਰਗ ਬੰਛਾਵਤ ॥

कोऊ नरक कोऊ सुरग बंछावत ॥

Kou narak kou surag bancchhaavat ||

Some have gone to hell, and some yearn for paradise.

ਆਲ ਜਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥

आल जाल माइआ जंजाल ॥

Aal jaal maaiaa janjjaal ||

Worldly snares and entanglements of Maya,

ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹ ਭਰਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰ ॥

हउमै मोह भरम भै भार ॥

Haumai moh bharam bhai bhaar ||

Egotism, attachment, doubt and loads of fear;

ਦੂਖ ਸੂਖ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨ ॥

दूख सूख मान अपमान ॥

Dookh sookh maan apamaan ||

Pain and pleasure, honor and dishonor

ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕੀਓ ਬਖੵਾਨ ॥

अनिक प्रकार कीओ बख्यान ॥

Anik prkaar keeo bakhyaan ||

These came to be described in various ways.

ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ॥

आपन खेलु आपि करि देखै ॥

Aapan khelu aapi kari dekhai ||

He Himself creates and beholds His own drama.

ਖੇਲੁ ਸੰਕੋਚੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੈ ॥੭॥

खेलु संकोचै तउ नानक एकै ॥७॥

Khelu sankkochai tau naanak ekai ||7||

He winds up the drama, and then, O Nanak, He alone remains. ||7||


ਜਹ ਅਬਿਗਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਤਹ ਆਪਿ ॥

जह अबिगतु भगतु तह आपि ॥

Jah abigatu bhagatu tah aapi ||

Wherever the Eternal Lord's devotee is, He Himself is there.

ਜਹ ਪਸਰੈ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ਸੰਤ ਪਰਤਾਪਿ ॥

जह पसरै पासारु संत परतापि ॥

Jah pasarai paasaaru santt parataapi ||

He unfolds the expanse of His creation for the glory of His Saint.

ਦੁਹੂ ਪਾਖ ਕਾ ਆਪਹਿ ਧਨੀ ॥

दुहू पाख का आपहि धनी ॥

Duhoo paakh kaa aapahi dhanee ||

He Himself is the Master of both worlds.

ਉਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਉਨਹੂ ਬਨੀ ॥

उन की सोभा उनहू बनी ॥

Un kee sobhaa unahoo banee ||

His Praise is to Himself alone.

ਆਪਹਿ ਕਉਤਕ ਕਰੈ ਅਨਦ ਚੋਜ ॥

आपहि कउतक करै अनद चोज ॥

Aapahi kautak karai anad choj ||

He Himself performs and plays His amusements and games.

ਆਪਹਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਨ ਨਿਰਜੋਗ ॥

आपहि रस भोगन निरजोग ॥

Aapahi ras bhogan nirajog ||

He Himself enjoys pleasures, and yet He is unaffected and untouched.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਵੈ ॥

जिसु भावै तिसु आपन नाइ लावै ॥

Jisu bhaavai tisu aapan naai laavai ||

He attaches whomever He pleases to His Name.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਖੇਲ ਖਿਲਾਵੈ ॥

जिसु भावै तिसु खेल खिलावै ॥

Jisu bhaavai tisu khel khilaavai ||

He causes whomever He pleases to play in His play.

ਬੇਸੁਮਾਰ ਅਥਾਹ ਅਗਨਤ ਅਤੋਲੈ ॥

बेसुमार अथाह अगनत अतोलै ॥

Besumaar athaah aganat atolai ||

He is beyond calculation, beyond measure, uncountable and unfathomable.

ਜਿਉ ਬੁਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਬੋਲੈ ॥੮॥੨੧॥

जिउ बुलावहु तिउ नानक दास बोलै ॥८॥२१॥

Jiu bulaavahu tiu naanak daas bolai ||8||21||

As You inspire him to speak, O Lord, so does servant Nanak speak. ||8||21||

Shalok:

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕੇ ਠਾਕੁਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਰਤਣਹਾਰ ॥

जीअ जंत के ठाकुरा आपे वरतणहार ॥

Jeea jantt ke thaakuraa aape varata(nn)ahaar ||

O Lord and Master of all beings and creatures, You Yourself are prevailing everywhere.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਰ ॥੧॥

नानक एको पसरिआ दूजा कह द्रिसटार ॥१॥

Naanak eko pasariaa doojaa kah drisataar ||1||

O Nanak, The One is All-pervading; where is any other to be seen? ||1||


ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

Ashtapadee:

ਆਪਿ ਕਥੈ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਨਨੈਹਾਰੁ ॥

आपि कथै आपि सुननैहारु ॥

Aapi kathai aapi sunanaihaaru ||

He Himself is the speaker, and He Himself is the listener.

ਆਪਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਆਪਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥

आपहि एकु आपि बिसथारु ॥

Aapahi eku aapi bisathaaru ||

He Himself is the One, and He Himself is the many.

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਏ ॥

जा तिसु भावै ता स्रिसटि उपाए ॥

Jaa tisu bhaavai taa srisati upaae ||

When it pleases Him, He creates the world.

ਆਪਨੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਲਏ ਸਮਾਏ ॥

आपनै भाणै लए समाए ॥

Aapanai bhaa(nn)ai lae samaae ||

As He pleases, He absorbs it back into Himself.

ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

तुम ते भिंन नही किछु होइ ॥

Tum te bhinn nahee kichhu hoi ||

Without You, nothing can be done.

ਆਪਨ ਸੂਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰੋਇ ॥

आपन सूति सभु जगतु परोइ ॥

Aapan sooti sabhu jagatu paroi ||

Upon Your thread, You have strung the whole world.

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

जा कउ प्रभ जीउ आपि बुझाए ॥

Jaa kau prbh jeeu aapi bujhaae ||

One whom God Himself inspires to understand

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

सचु नामु सोई जनु पाए ॥

Sachu naamu soee janu paae ||

- that person obtains the True Name.

ਸੋ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਤਤ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥

सो समदरसी तत का बेता ॥

So samadarasee tat kaa betaa ||

He looks impartially upon all, and he knows the essential reality.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਾ ਜੇਤਾ ॥੧॥

नानक सगल स्रिसटि का जेता ॥१॥

Naanak sagal srisati kaa jetaa ||1||

O Nanak, he conquers the whole world. ||1||


ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਹਾਥ ॥

जीअ जंत्र सभ ता कै हाथ ॥

Jeea janttr sabh taa kai haath ||

All beings and creatures are in His Hands.

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਨਾਥੁ ॥

दीन दइआल अनाथ को नाथु ॥

Deen daiaal anaath ko naathu ||

He is Merciful to the meek, the Patron of the patronless.

ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ॥

जिसु राखै तिसु कोइ न मारै ॥

Jisu raakhai tisu koi na maarai ||

No one can kill those who are protected by Him.

ਸੋ ਮੂਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੈ ॥

सो मूआ जिसु मनहु बिसारै ॥

So mooaa jisu manahu bisaarai ||

One who is forgotten by God, is already dead.

ਤਿਸੁ ਤਜਿ ਅਵਰ ਕਹਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

तिसु तजि अवर कहा को जाइ ॥

Tisu taji avar kahaa ko jaai ||

Leaving Him, where else could anyone go?

ਸਭ ਸਿਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਾਇ ॥

सभ सिरि एकु निरंजन राइ ॥

Sabh siri eku niranjjan raai ||

Over the heads of all is the One, the Immaculate King.

ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਭ ਹਾਥਿ ॥

जीअ की जुगति जा कै सभ हाथि ॥

Jeea kee jugati jaa kai sabh haathi ||

The ways and means of all beings are in His Hands.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਸਾਥਿ ॥

अंतरि बाहरि जानहु साथि ॥

Anttari baahari jaanahu saathi ||

Inwardly and outwardly, know that He is with you.

ਗੁਨ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

गुन निधान बेअंत अपार ॥

Gun nidhaan beantt apaar ||

Pooran poori rahe daiaal ||

The Perfect, Merciful Lord is pervading everywhere.

ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥

सभ ऊपरि होवत किरपाल ॥

Sabh upari hovat kirapaal ||

His kindness extends to all.

ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰਤਬ ਜਾਨੈ ਆਪਿ ॥

अपने करतब जानै आपि ॥

Apane karatab jaanai aapi ||

He Himself knows His own ways.

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਿਆਪਿ ॥

अंतरजामी रहिओ बिआपि ॥

Anttarajaamee rahio biaapi ||

The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, is present everywhere.

ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੈ ਜੀਅਨ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ॥

प्रतिपालै जीअन बहु भाति ॥

Prtipaalai jeean bahu bhaati ||

He cherishes His living beings in so many ways.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਰਚਿਓ ਸੁ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਧਿਆਤਿ ॥

जो जो रचिओ सु तिसहि धिआति ॥

Jo jo rachio su tisahi dhiaati ||

That which He has created meditates on Him.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

जिसु भावै तिसु लए मिलाइ ॥

Jisu bhaavai tisu lae milaai ||

Whoever pleases Him, He blends into Himself.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥

भगति करहि हरि के गुण गाइ ॥

Bhagati karahi hari ke gu(nn) gaai ||

They perform His devotional service and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥

मन अंतरि बिस्वासु करि मानिआ ॥

Man anttari bisvaasu kari maaniaa ||

With heart-felt faith, they believe in Him.

ਕਰਨਹਾਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥

करनहारु नानक इकु जानिआ ॥३॥

Karanahaaru naanak iku jaaniaa ||3||

O Nanak, they realize the One, the Creator Lord. ||3||


ਜਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੈ ਨਾਇ ॥

जनु लागा हरि एकै नाइ ॥

Janu laagaa hari ekai naai ||

The Lord's humble servant is committed to His Name.

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

तिस की आस न बिरथी जाइ ॥

Tis kee aas na birathee jaai ||

His hopes do not go in vain.

ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥

सेवक कउ सेवा बनि आई ॥

Sevak kau sevaa bani aaee ||

The servant's purpose is to serve;

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈ ॥

हुकमु बूझि परम पदु पाई ॥

Hukamu boojhi param padu paaee ||

Obeying the Lord's Command, the supreme status is obtained.

ਇਸ ਤੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

इस ते ऊपरि नही बीचारु ॥

Is te upari nahee beechaaru ||

Beyond this, he has no other thought.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਸਿਆ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

जा कै मनि बसिआ निरंकारु ॥

Jaa kai mani basiaa nirankkaaru ||

Within his mind, the Formless Lord abides.

ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋਰਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਵੈਰ ॥

बंधन तोरि भए निरवैर ॥

Banddhan tori bhae niravair ||

His bonds are cut away, and he becomes free of hatred.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਪੈਰ ॥

अनदिनु पूजहि गुर के पैर ॥

Anadinu poojahi gur ke pair ||

Night and day, he worships the Feet of the Guru.

ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥

इह लोक सुखीए परलोक सुहेले ॥

Ih lok sukheee paralok suhele ||

He is at peace in this world, and happy in the next.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਹਿ ਮੇਲੇ ॥੪॥

नानक हरि प्रभि आपहि मेले ॥४॥

Naanak hari prbhi aapahi mele ||4||

O Nanak, the Lord God unites him with Himself. ||4||


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਅਨੰਦ ॥

साधसंगि मिलि करहु अनंद ॥

Saadhasanggi mili karahu anandd ||

Join the Company of the Holy, and be happy.

ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥

गुन गावहु प्रभ परमानंद ॥

Gun gaavahu prbh paramaanandd ||

Sing the Glories of God, the embodiment of supreme bliss.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਤਤੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

राम नाम ततु करहु बीचारु ॥

Raam naam tatu karahu beechaaru ||

Contemplate the essence of the Lord's Name.

ਦ੍ਰੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਕਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥

द्रुलभ देह का करहु उधारु ॥

Drulabh deh kaa karahu udhaaru ||

Redeem this human body, so difficult to obtain.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਚਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥

अम्रित बचन हरि के गुन गाउ ॥

Ammmrit bachan hari ke gun gaau ||

Sing the Ambrosial Words of the Lord's Glorious Praises;

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਤਰਨ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

प्रान तरन का इहै सुआउ ॥

Praan taran kaa ihai suaau ||

This is the way to save your mortal soul.

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੇਖਹੁ ਨੇਰਾ ॥

आठ पहर प्रभ पेखहु नेरा ॥

Aath pahar prbh pekhahu neraa ||

Behold God near at hand, twenty-four hours a day.

ਮਿਟੈ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ॥

मिटै अगिआनु बिनसै अंधेरा ॥

Mitai agiaanu binasai anddheraa ||

Ignorance shall depart, and darkness shall be dispelled.

ਸੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਬਸਾਵਹੁ ॥

सुनि उपदेसु हिरदै बसावहु ॥

Suni upadesu hiradai basaavahu ||

Listen to the Teachings, and enshrine them in your heart.

ਮਨ ਇਛੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੫॥

मन इछे नानक फल पावहु ॥५॥

Man ichhe naanak phal paavahu ||5||

O Nanak, you shall obtain the fruits of your mind's desires. ||5||


ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੁਇ ਲੇਹੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥

हलतु पलतु दुइ लेहु सवारि ॥

Halatu palatu dui lehu savaari ||

Embellish both this world and the next;

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

राम नामु अंतरि उरि धारि ॥

Raam naamu anttari uri dhaari ||

Enshrine the Lord's Name deep within your heart.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਦੀਖਿਆ ॥

पूरे गुर की पूरी दीखिआ ॥

Poore gur kee pooree deekhiaa ||

Perfect are the Teachings of the Perfect Guru.

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਖਿਆ ॥

जिसु मनि बसै तिसु साचु परीखिआ ॥

Jisu mani basai tisu saachu pareekhiaa ||

That person, within whose mind it abides, realizes the Truth.

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

मनि तनि नामु जपहु लिव लाइ ॥

Mani tani naamu japahu liv laai ||

With your mind and body, chant the Naam; lovingly attune yourself to it.

ਦੂਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥

दूखु दरदु मन ते भउ जाइ ॥

Dookhu daradu man te bhau jaai ||

Sorrow, pain and fear shall depart from your mind.

ਸਚੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥

सचु वापारु करहु वापारी ॥

Sachu vaapaaru karahu vaapaaree ||

Deal in the true trade, O trader,

ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਖੇਪ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥

दरगह निबहै खेप तुमारी ॥

Daragah nibahai khep tumaaree ||

And your merchandise shall be safe in the Court of the Lord.

ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਰਖਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

एका टेक रखहु मन माहि ॥

Ekaa tek rakhahu man maahi ||

Keep the Support of the One in your mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੬॥

नानक बहुरि न आवहि जाहि ॥६॥

Naanak bahuri na aavahi jaahi ||6||

O Nanak, you shall not have to come and go in reincarnation again. ||6||


ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

तिस ते दूरि कहा को जाइ ॥

Tis te doori kahaa ko jaai ||

Where can anyone go, to get away from Him?

ਉਬਰੈ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥

उबरै राखनहारु धिआइ ॥

Ubarai raakhanahaaru dhiaai ||

Meditating on the Protector Lord, you shall be saved.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਜਪੈ ਸਗਲ ਭਉ ਮਿਟੈ ॥

निरभउ जपै सगल भउ मिटै ॥

Nirabhau japai sagal bhau mitai ||

Meditating on the Fearless Lord, all fear departs.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਛੁਟੈ ॥

प्रभ किरपा ते प्राणी छुटै ॥

Prbh kirapaa te praa(nn)ee chhutai ||

By God's Grace, mortals are released.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਖ ॥

जिसु प्रभु राखै तिसु नाही दूख ॥

Jisu prbhu raakhai tisu naahee dookh ||

One who is protected by God never suffers in pain.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੂਖ ॥

नामु जपत मनि होवत सूख ॥

Naamu japat mani hovat sookh ||

Chanting the Naam, the mind becomes peaceful.

ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

चिंता जाइ मिटै अहंकारु ॥

Chinttaa jaai mitai ahankkaaru ||

Anxiety departs, and ego is eliminated.

ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਹੁਚਨਹਾਰੁ ॥

तिसु जन कउ कोइ न पहुचनहारु ॥

Tisu jan kau koi na pahuchanahaaru ||

No one can equal that humble servant.

ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਠਾਢਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

सिर ऊपरि ठाढा गुरु सूरा ॥

Sir upari thaadhaa guru sooraa ||

The Brave and Powerful Guru stands over his head.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੭॥

नानक ता के कारज पूरा ॥७॥

Naanak taa ke kaaraj pooraa ||7||

O Nanak, his efforts are fulfilled. ||7||


ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ॥

मति पूरी अम्रितु जा की द्रिसटि ॥

Mati pooree ammmritu jaa kee drisati ||

His wisdom is perfect, and His Glance is Ambrosial.

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਤ ਉਧਰਤ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ॥

दरसनु पेखत उधरत स्रिसटि ॥

Darasanu pekhat udharat srisati ||

Beholding His Vision, the universe is saved.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਅਨੂਪ ॥

चरन कमल जा के अनूप ॥

Charan kamal jaa ke anoop ||

His Lotus Feet are incomparably beautiful.

ਸਫਲ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਹਰਿ ਰੂਪ ॥

सफल दरसनु सुंदर हरि रूप ॥

Saphal darasanu sunddar hari roop ||

The Blessed Vision of His Darshan is fruitful and rewarding; His Lordly Form is beautiful.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥

धंनु सेवा सेवकु परवानु ॥

Dhannu sevaa sevaku paravaanu ||

Blessed is His service; His servant is famous.

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨੁ ॥

अंतरजामी पुरखु प्रधानु ॥

Anttarajaamee purakhu prdhaanu ||

The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, is the most exalted Supreme Being.

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥

जिसु मनि बसै सु होत निहालु ॥

Jisu mani basai su hot nihaalu ||

That one, within whose mind He abides, is blissfully happy.

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਤ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

ता कै निकटि न आवत कालु ॥

Taa kai nikati na aavat kaalu ||

Death does not draw near him.

ਅਮਰ ਭਏ ਅਮਰਾ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

अमर भए अमरा पदु पाइआ ॥

Amar bhae amaraa padu paaiaa ||

One becomes immortal, and obtains the immortal status,

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੮॥੨੨॥

साधसंगि नानक हरि धिआइआ ॥८॥२२॥

Saadhasanggi naanak hari dhiaaiaa ||8||22||

ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥

गिआन अंजनु गुरि दीआ अगिआन अंधेर बिनासु ॥

Giaan anjjanu guri deeaa agiaan anddher binaasu ||

The Guru has given the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, and dispelled the darkness of ignorance.

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੰਤ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

हरि किरपा ते संत भेटिआ नानक मनि परगासु ॥१॥

Hari kirapaa te santt bhetiaa naanak mani paragaasu ||1||

By the Lord's Grace, I have met the Saint; O Nanak, my mind is enlightened. ||1||

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਡੀਠਾ ॥

संतसंगि अंतरि प्रभु डीठा ॥

Santtasanggi anttari prbhu deethaa ||

In the Society of the Saints, I see God deep within my being.

ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਮੀਠਾ ॥

नामु प्रभू का लागा मीठा ॥

Naamu prbhoo kaa laagaa meethaa ||

God's Name is sweet to me.

ਸਗਲ ਸਮਿਗ੍ਰੀ ਏਕਸੁ ਘਟ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

सगल समिग्री एकसु घट माहि ॥

Sagal samigree ekasu ghat maahi ||

All things are contained in the Heart of the One,

ਅਨਿਕ ਰੰਗ ਨਾਨਾ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਹਿ ॥

अनिक रंग नाना द्रिसटाहि ॥

Anik rangg naanaa drisataahi ||

Although they appear in so many various colors.

ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

नउ निधि अम्रितु प्रभ का नामु ॥

Nau nidhi ammmritu prbh kaa naamu ||

The nine treasures are in the Ambrosial Name of God.

ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਇਸ ਕਾ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥

देही महि इस का बिस्रामु ॥

Dehee mahi is kaa bisraamu ||

Within the human body is its place of rest.

ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਅਨਹਤ ਤਹ ਨਾਦ ॥

सुंन समाधि अनहत तह नाद ॥

Sunn samaadhi anahat tah naad ||

The Deepest Samaadhi, and the unstruck sound current of the Naad are there.

ਕਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਅਚਰਜ ਬਿਸਮਾਦ ॥

कहनु न जाई अचरज बिसमाद ॥

Kahanu na jaaee acharaj bisamaad ||

The wonder and marvel of it cannot be described.

ਤਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਏ ॥

तिनि देखिआ जिसु आपि दिखाए ॥

Tini dekhiaa jisu aapi dikhaae ||

He alone sees it, unto whom God Himself reveals it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

नानक तिसु जन सोझी पाए ॥१॥

Naanak tisu jan sojhee paae ||1||

O Nanak, that humble being understands. ||1||


ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਅਨੰਤ ॥

सो अंतरि सो बाहरि अनंत ॥

So anttari so baahari anantt ||

The Infinite Lord is inside, and outside as well.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥

घटि घटि बिआपि रहिआ भगवंत ॥

Ghati ghati biaapi rahiaa bhagavantt ||

Deep within each and every heart, the Lord God is pervading.

ਧਰਨਿ ਮਾਹਿ ਆਕਾਸ ਪਇਆਲ ॥

धरनि माहि आकास पइआल ॥

Dharani maahi aakaas paiaal ||

In the earth, in the Akaashic ethers, and in the nether regions of the underworld

ਸਰਬ ਲੋਕ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥

सरब लोक पूरन प्रतिपाल ॥

Sarab lok pooran prtipaal ||

In all worlds, He is the Perfect Cherisher.

ਬਨਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਪਰਬਤਿ ਹੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥

बनि तिनि परबति है पारब्रहमु ॥

Bani tini parabati hai paarabrhamu ||

In the forests, fields and mountains, He is the Supreme Lord God.

ਜੈਸੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਤੈਸਾ ਕਰਮੁ ॥

जैसी आगिआ तैसा करमु ॥

Jaisee aagiaa taisaa karamu ||

As He orders, so do His creatures act.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

पउण पाणी बैसंतर माहि ॥

Pau(nn) paa(nn)ee baisanttar maahi ||

He permeates the winds and the waters.

ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਦਹ ਦਿਸੇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

चारि कुंट दह दिसे समाहि ॥

Chaari kuntt dah dise samaahi ||

He is pervading in the four corners and in the ten directions.

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਨਹੀ ਕੋ ਠਾਉ ॥

तिस ते भिंन नही को ठाउ ॥

Tis te bhinn nahee ko thaau ||

Without Him, there is no place at all.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਉ ॥੨॥

गुर प्रसादि नानक सुखु पाउ ॥२॥

Gur prsaadi naanak sukhu paau ||2||

By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, peace is obtained. ||2||


ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਦੇਖੁ ॥

बेद पुरान सिम्रिति महि देखु ॥

Bed puraan simmmriti mahi dekhu ||

See Him in the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees.

ਸਸੀਅਰ ਸੂਰ ਨਖੵਤ੍ਰ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ॥

ससीअर सूर नख्यत्र महि एकु ॥

Saseear soor nakhytr mahi eku ||

In the moon, the sun and the stars, He is the One.

ਬਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

बाणी प्रभ की सभु को बोलै ॥

Baa(nn)ee prbh kee sabhu ko bolai ||

The Bani of God's Word is spoken by everyone.

ਆਪਿ ਅਡੋਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਡੋਲੈ ॥

आपि अडोलु न कबहू डोलै ॥

Aapi adolu na kabahoo dolai ||

He Himself is unwavering - He never wavers.

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਖੇਲੈ ਖੇਲ ॥

सरब कला करि खेलै खेल ॥

Sarab kalaa kari khelai khel ||

With absolute power, He plays His play.

ਮੋਲਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣਹ ਅਮੋਲ ॥

मोलि न पाईऐ गुणह अमोल ॥

Moli na paaeeai gu(nn)ah amol ||

His value cannot be estimated; His virtues are invaluable.

ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਜੋਤਿ ॥

सरब जोति महि जा की जोति ॥

Sarab joti mahi jaa kee joti ||

In all light, is His Light.

ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ॥

धारि रहिओ सुआमी ओति पोति ॥

Dhaari rahio suaamee oti poti ||

The Lord and Master supports the weave of the fabric of the universe.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਭਰਮ ਕਾ ਨਾਸੁ ॥

गुर परसादि भरम का नासु ॥

Gur parasaadi bharam kaa naasu ||

By Guru's Grace, doubt is dispelled.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਏਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਸੁ ॥੩॥

नानक तिन महि एहु बिसासु ॥३॥

Naanak tin mahi ehu bisaasu ||3||

O Nanak, this faith is firmly implanted within. ||3||


ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕਾ ਪੇਖਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ॥

संत जना का पेखनु सभु ब्रहम ॥

Santt janaa kaa pekhanu sabhu brham ||

In the eye of the Saint, everything is God.

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਭਿ ਧਰਮ ॥

संत जना कै हिरदै सभि धरम ॥

Santt janaa kai hiradai sabhi dharam ||

In the heart of the Saint, everything is Dharma.

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸੁਨਹਿ ਸੁਭ ਬਚਨ ॥

संत जना सुनहि सुभ बचन ॥

Santt janaa sunahi subh bachan ||

The Saint hears words of goodness.

ਸਰਬ ਬਿਆਪੀ ਰਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਚਨ ॥

सरब बिआपी राम संगि रचन ॥

Sarab biaapee raam sanggi rachan ||

He is absorbed in the All-pervading Lord.

ਜਿਨਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਰਹਤ ॥

जिनि जाता तिस की इह रहत ॥

Jini jaataa tis kee ih rahat ||

This is the way of life of one who knows God.

ਸਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਭਿ ਕਹਤ ॥

सति बचन साधू सभि कहत ॥

Sati bachan saadhoo sabhi kahat ||

True are all the words spoken by the Holy.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

जो जो होइ सोई सुखु मानै ॥

Jo jo hoi soee sukhu maanai ||

Whatever happens, he peacefully accepts.

ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

करन करावनहारु प्रभु जानै ॥

Karan karaavanahaaru prbhu jaanai ||

He knows God as the Doer, the Cause of causes.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੀ ਓਹੀ ॥

अंतरि बसे बाहरि भी ओही ॥

Anttari base baahari bhee ohee ||

He dwells inside, and outside as well.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਭ ਮੋਹੀ ॥੪॥

नानक दरसनु देखि सभ मोही ॥४॥

Naanak darasanu dekhi sabh mohee ||4||

O Nanak, beholding the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, all are fascinated. ||4||


ਆਪਿ ਸਤਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਸਤਿ ॥

आपि सति कीआ सभु सति ॥

Aapi sati keeaa sabhu sati ||

He Himself is True, and all that He has made is True.

ਤਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ਸਗਲੀ ਉਤਪਤਿ ॥

तिसु प्रभ ते सगली उतपति ॥

Tisu prbh te sagalee utapati ||

The entire creation came from God.

ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੁ ॥

तिसु भावै ता करे बिसथारु ॥

Tisu bhaavai taa kare bisathaaru ||

As it pleases Him, He creates the expanse.

ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

तिसु भावै ता एकंकारु ॥

Tisu bhaavai taa ekankkaaru ||

As it pleases Him, He becomes the One and Only again.

ਅਨਿਕ ਕਲਾ ਲਖੀ ਨਹ ਜਾਇ ॥

अनिक कला लखी नह जाइ ॥

Anik kalaa lakhee nah jaai ||

His powers are so numerous, they cannot be known.

ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

जिसु भावै तिसु लए मिलाइ ॥

Jisu bhaavai tisu lae milaai ||

As it pleases Him, He merges us into Himself again.

ਕਵਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਵਨ ਕਹੀਐ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

कवन निकटि कवन कहीऐ दूरि ॥

Kavan nikati kavan kaheeai doori ||

Who is near, and who is far away?

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

आपे आपि आप भरपूरि ॥

Aape aapi aap bharapoori ||

He Himself is Himself pervading everywhere.

ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਨਾਏ ॥

अंतरगति जिसु आपि जनाए ॥

Anttaragati jisu aapi janaae ||

One whom God causes to know that He is within the heart

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥੫॥

नानक तिसु जन आपि बुझाए ॥५॥

Naanak tisu jan aapi bujhaae ||5||

- O Nanak, He causes that person to understand Him. ||5||


ਸਰਬ ਭੂਤ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ॥

सरब भूत आपि वरतारा ॥

Sarab bhoot aapi varataaraa ||

In all forms, He Himself is pervading.

ਸਰਬ ਨੈਨ ਆਪਿ ਪੇਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

सरब नैन आपि पेखनहारा ॥

Sarab nain aapi pekhanahaaraa ||

Through all eyes, He Himself is watching.

ਸਗਲ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਤਨਾ ॥

सगल समग्री जा का तना ॥

Sagal samagree jaa kaa tanaa ||

All the creation is His Body.

ਆਪਨ ਜਸੁ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੁਨਾ ॥

आपन जसु आप ही सुना ॥

Aapan jasu aap hee sunaa ||

He Himself listens to His Own Praise.

ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਬਨਾਇਆ ॥

आवन जानु इकु खेलु बनाइआ ॥

Aavan jaanu iku khelu banaaiaa ||

The One has created the drama of coming and going.

ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

आगिआकारी कीनी माइआ ॥

Aagiaakaaree keenee maaiaa ||

He made Maya subservient to His Will.

ਸਭ ਕੈ ਮਧਿ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਰਹੈ ॥

सभ कै मधि अलिपतो रहै ॥

Sabh kai madhi alipato rahai ||

In the midst of all, He remains unattached.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣਾ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਕਹੈ ॥

जो किछु कहणा सु आपे कहै ॥

Jo kichhu kaha(nn)aa su aape kahai ||

Whatever is said, He Himself says.

ਆਗਿਆ ਆਵੈ ਆਗਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

आगिआ आवै आगिआ जाइ ॥

Aagiaa aavai aagiaa jaai ||

By His Will we come, and by His Will we go.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਲਏ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥

नानक जा भावै ता लए समाइ ॥६॥

Naanak jaa bhaavai taa lae samaai ||6||

O Nanak, when it pleases Him, then He absorbs us into Himself. ||6||


ਇਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਬੁਰਾ ॥

इस ते होइ सु नाही बुरा ॥

Is te hoi su naahee buraa ||

If it comes from Him, it cannot be bad.

ਓਰੈ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਾ ॥

ओरै कहहु किनै कछु करा ॥

Orai kahahu kinai kachhu karaa ||

Other than Him, who can do anything?

ਆਪਿ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਕੀ ॥

आपि भला करतूति अति नीकी ॥

Aapi bhalaa karatooti ati neekee ||

He Himself is good; His actions are the very best.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਨੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਜੀ ਕੀ ॥

आपे जानै अपने जी की ॥

Aape jaanai apane jee kee ||

He Himself knows His Own Being.

ਆਪਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਧਾਰੀ ਸਭ ਸਾਚੁ ॥

आपि साचु धारी सभ साचु ॥

Aapi saachu dhaaree sabh saachu ||

He Himself is True, and all that He has established is True.

ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਆਪਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਚੁ ॥

ओति पोति आपन संगि राचु ॥

Oti poti aapan sanggi raachu ||

Through and through, He is blended with His creation.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

ता की गति मिति कही न जाइ ॥

Taa kee gati miti kahee na jaai ||

His state and extent cannot be described.

ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

दूसर होइ त सोझी पाइ ॥

Doosar hoi ta sojhee paai ||

If there were another like Him, then only he could understand Him.

ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥

तिस का कीआ सभु परवानु ॥

Tis kaa keeaa sabhu paravaanu ||

His actions are all approved and accepted.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੭॥

गुर प्रसादि नानक इहु जानु ॥७॥

Gur prsaadi naanak ihu jaanu ||7||

By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, this is known. ||7||


ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

जो जानै तिसु सदा सुखु होइ ॥

Jo jaanai tisu sadaa sukhu hoi ||

One who knows Him, obtains everlasting peace.

ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

आपि मिलाइ लए प्रभु सोइ ॥

Aapi milaai lae prbhu soi ||

God blends that one into Himself.

ਓਹੁ ਧਨਵੰਤੁ ਕੁਲਵੰਤੁ ਪਤਿਵੰਤੁ ॥

ओहु धनवंतु कुलवंतु पतिवंतु ॥

Ohu dhanavanttu kulavanttu pativanttu ||

He is wealth and prosperous, and of noble birth.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਭਗਵੰਤੁ ॥

जीवन मुकति जिसु रिदै भगवंतु ॥

Jeevan mukati jisu ridai bhagavanttu ||

He is Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive; the Lord God abides in his heart.

ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥

धंनु धंनु धंनु जनु आइआ ॥

Dhannu dhannu dhannu janu aaiaa ||

Blessed, blessed, blessed is the coming of that humble being;

ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥

जिसु प्रसादि सभु जगतु तराइआ ॥

Jisu prsaadi sabhu jagatu taraaiaa ||

By his grace, the whole world is saved.

ਜਨ ਆਵਨ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

जन आवन का इहै सुआउ ॥

Jan aavan kaa ihai suaau ||

This is his purpose in life;

ਜਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥

जन कै संगि चिति आवै नाउ ॥

Jan kai sanggi chiti aavai naau ||

In the Company of this humble servant, the Lord's Name comes to mind.

ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

आपि मुकतु मुकतु करै संसारु ॥

Aapi mukatu mukatu karai sanssaaru ||

He Himself is liberated, and He liberates the universe.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੨੩॥

नानक तिसु जन कउ सदा नमसकारु ॥८॥२३॥

Naanak tisu jan kau sadaa namasakaaru ||8||23||

O Nanak, to that humble servant, I bow in reverence forever. ||8||23||

ਪੂਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

पूरा प्रभु आराधिआ पूरा जा का नाउ ॥

Pooraa prbhu aaraadhiaa pooraa jaa kaa naau ||

I worship and adore the Perfect Lord God. Perfect is His Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥

नानक पूरा पाइआ पूरे के गुन गाउ ॥१॥

Naanak pooraa paaiaa poore ke gun gaau ||1||

O Nanak, I have obtained the Perfect One; I sing the Glorious Praises of the Perfect Lord. ||1||

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਪੇਖੁ ॥

पारब्रहमु निकटि करि पेखु ॥

Paarabrhamu nikati kari pekhu ||

See the Supreme Lord God near you.

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥

सासि सासि सिमरहु गोबिंद ॥

Saasi saasi simarahu gobindd ||

With each and every breath, meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe,

ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਚਿੰਦ ॥

मन अंतर की उतरै चिंद ॥

Man anttar kee utarai chindd ||

And the anxiety within your mind shall depart.

ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਤਰੰਗ ॥

आस अनित तिआगहु तरंग ॥

Aas anit tiaagahu tarangg ||

Abandon the waves of fleeting desire,

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੰਗ ॥

संत जना की धूरि मन मंग ॥

Santt janaa kee dhoori man mangg ||

And pray for the dust of the feet of the Saints.

ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਹੁ ॥

आपु छोडि बेनती करहु ॥

Aapu chhodi benatee karahu ||

Renounce your selfishness and conceit and offer your prayers.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਹੁ ॥

साधसंगि अगनि सागरु तरहु ॥

Saadhasanggi agani saagaru tarahu ||

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, cross over the ocean of fire.

ਹਰਿ ਧਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

हरि धन के भरि लेहु भंडार ॥

Hari dhan ke bhari lehu bhanddaar ||

Fill your stores with the wealth of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ॥੧॥

नानक गुर पूरे नमसकार ॥१॥

Naanak gur poore namasakaar ||1||

Nanak bows in humility and reverence to the Perfect Guru. ||1||


ਖੇਮ ਕੁਸਲ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ॥

खेम कुसल सहज आनंद ॥

Khem kusal sahaj aanandd ||

Happiness, intuitive peace, poise and bliss

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਜੁ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦ ॥

साधसंगि भजु परमानंद ॥

Saadhasanggi bhaju paramaanandd ||

In the Company of the Holy, meditate on the Lord of supreme bliss.

ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

नरक निवारि उधारहु जीउ ॥

Narak nivaari udhaarahu jeeu ||

You shall be spared from hell - save your soul!

ਗੁਨ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਉ ॥

गुन गोबिंद अम्रित रसु पीउ ॥

Gun gobindd ammmrit rasu peeu ||

Drink in the ambrosial essence of the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.

ਚਿਤਿ ਚਿਤਵਹੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਏਕ ॥

चिति चितवहु नाराइण एक ॥

Chiti chitavahu naaraai(nn) ek ||

Focus your consciousness on the One, the All-pervading Lord

ਏਕ ਰੂਪ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

एक रूप जा के रंग अनेक ॥

Ek roop jaa ke rangg anek ||

He has One Form, but He has many manifestations.

ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾਮੋਦਰ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

गोपाल दामोदर दीन दइआल ॥

Gopaal daamodar deen daiaal ||

Sustainer of the Universe, Lord of the world, Kind to the poor,

ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥

दुख भंजन पूरन किरपाल ॥

Dukh bhanjjan pooran kirapaal ||

Destroyer of sorrow, perfectly Merciful.

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਾਰੰ ਬਾਰ ॥

सिमरि सिमरि नामु बारं बार ॥

Simari simari naamu baarann baar ||

Meditate, meditate in remembrance on the Naam, again and again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਇਹੈ ਅਧਾਰ ॥੨॥

नानक जीअ का इहै अधार ॥२॥

Naanak jeea kaa ihai adhaar ||2||

O Nanak, it is the Support of the soul. ||2||


ਉਤਮ ਸਲੋਕ ਸਾਧ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ॥

उतम सलोक साध के बचन ॥

Utam salok saadh ke bachan ||

The most sublime hymns are the Words of the Holy.

ਅਮੁਲੀਕ ਲਾਲ ਏਹਿ ਰਤਨ ॥

अमुलीक लाल एहि रतन ॥

Amuleek laal ehi ratan ||

These are priceless rubies and gems.

ਸੁਨਤ ਕਮਾਵਤ ਹੋਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥

सुनत कमावत होत उधार ॥

Sunat kamaavat hot udhaar ||

One who listens and acts on them is saved.

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਲੋਕਹ ਨਿਸਤਾਰ ॥

आपि तरै लोकह निसतार ॥

Aapi tarai lokah nisataar ||

He himself swims across, and saves others as well.

ਸਫਲ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥

सफल जीवनु सफलु ता का संगु ॥

Saphal jeevanu saphalu taa kaa sanggu ||

His life is prosperous, and his company is fruitful;

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥

जा कै मनि लागा हरि रंगु ॥

Jaa kai mani laagaa hari ranggu ||

His mind is imbued with the love of the Lord.

ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ॥

जै जै सबदु अनाहदु वाजै ॥

Jai jai sabadu anaahadu vaajai ||

Hail, hail to him, for whom the sound current of the Shabad vibrates.

ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਅਨਦ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥

सुनि सुनि अनद करे प्रभु गाजै ॥

Suni suni anad kare prbhu gaajai ||

Hearing it again and again, he is in bliss, proclaiming God's Praises.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਮਹਾਂਤ ਕੈ ਮਾਥੇ ॥

प्रगटे गुपाल महांत कै माथे ॥

Prgate gupaal mahaant kai maathe ||

The Lord radiates from the foreheads of the Holy.

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸਾਥੇ ॥੩॥

नानक उधरे तिन कै साथे ॥३॥

Naanak udhare tin kai saathe ||3||

Nanak is saved in their company. ||3||


ਸਰਨਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਰਨੀ ਆਏ ॥

सरनि जोगु सुनि सरनी आए ॥

Sarani jogu suni saranee aae ||

Hearing that He can give Sanctuary, I have come seeking His Sanctuary.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

करि किरपा प्रभ आप मिलाए ॥

Kari kirapaa prbh aap milaae ||

Bestowing His Mercy, God has blended me with Himself.

ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਬੈਰ ਭਏ ਸਭ ਰੇਨ ॥

मिटि गए बैर भए सभ रेन ॥

Miti gae bair bhae sabh ren ||

Hatred is gone, and I have become the dust of all.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਲੈਨ ॥

अम्रित नामु साधसंगि लैन ॥

I have received the Ambrosial Naam in the Company of the Holy.

ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥

सुप्रसंन भए गुरदेव ॥

Suprsann bhae guradev ||

The Divine Guru is perfectly pleased;

ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ॥

पूरन होई सेवक की सेव ॥

Pooran hoee sevak kee sev ||

The service of His servant has been rewarded.

ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਰਹਤੇ ॥

आल जंजाल बिकार ते रहते ॥

Aal janjjaal bikaar te rahate ||

I have been released from worldly entanglements and corruption,

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਕਹਤੇ ॥

राम नाम सुनि रसना कहते ॥

Raam naam suni rasanaa kahate ||

Hearing the Lord's Name and chanting it with my tongue.

ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

करि प्रसादु दइआ प्रभि धारी ॥

Kari prsaadu daiaa prbhi dhaaree ||

By His Grace, God has bestowed His Mercy.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਖੇਪ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

नानक निबही खेप हमारी ॥४॥

Naanak nibahee khep hamaaree ||4||

O Nanak, my merchandise has arrived save and sound. ||4||


ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮੀਤ ॥

प्रभ की उसतति करहु संत मीत ॥

Prbh kee usatati karahu santt meet ||

Sing the Praises of God, O Saints, O friends,

ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਏਕਾਗਰ ਚੀਤ ॥

सावधान एकागर चीत ॥

Saavadhaan ekaagar cheet ||

With total concentration and one-pointedness of mind.

ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਸਹਜ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਨ ਨਾਮ ॥

सुखमनी सहज गोबिंद गुन नाम ॥

Sukhamanee sahaj gobindd gun naam ||

Sukhmani is the peaceful ease, the Glory of God, the Naam.

ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥

जिसु मनि बसै सु होत निधान ॥

Jisu mani basai su hot nidhaan ||

When it abides in the mind, one becomes wealthy.

ਸਰਬ ਇਛਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

सरब इछा ता की पूरन होइ ॥

Sarab ichhaa taa kee pooran hoi ||

All desires are fulfilled.

ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਭ ਲੋਇ ॥

प्रधान पुरखु प्रगटु सभ लोइ ॥

Prdhaan purakhu prgatu sabh loi ||

One becomes the most respected person, famous all over the world.

ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਪਾਏ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ॥

सभ ते ऊच पाए असथानु ॥

Sabh te uch paae asathaanu ||

He obtains the highest place of all.

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ॥

बहुरि न होवै आवन जानु ॥

Bahuri na hovai aavan jaanu ||

He does not come and go in reincarnation any longer.

ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟਿ ਚਲੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

हरि धनु खाटि चलै जनु सोइ ॥

Hari dhanu khaati chalai janu soi ||

One who departs, after earning the wealth of the Lord's Name,

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥

नानक जिसहि परापति होइ ॥५॥

Naanak jisahi paraapati hoi ||5||

O Nanak, realizes it. ||5||


ਖੇਮ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ॥

खेम सांति रिधि नव निधि ॥

Khem saanti ridhi nav nidhi ||

Comfort, peace and tranquility, wealth and the nine treasures;

ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਤਹ ਸਿਧਿ ॥

बुधि गिआनु सरब तह सिधि ॥

Budhi giaanu sarab tah sidhi ||

Wisdom, knowledge, and all spiritual powers;

ਬਿਦਿਆ ਤਪੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

बिदिआ तपु जोगु प्रभ धिआनु ॥

Bidiaa tapu jogu prbh dhiaanu ||

Learning, penance, Yoga and meditation on God;

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਊਤਮ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥

गिआनु स्रेसट ऊतम इसनानु ॥

Giaanu sresat utam isanaanu ||

The most sublime wisdom and purifying baths;

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥

चारि पदारथ कमल प्रगास ॥

Chaari padaarath kamal prgaas ||

The four cardinal blessings, the opening of the heart-lotus;

ਸਭ ਕੈ ਮਧਿ ਸਗਲ ਤੇ ਉਦਾਸ ॥

सभ कै मधि सगल ते उदास ॥

Sabh kai madhi sagal te udaas ||

In the midst of all, and yet detached from all;

ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਤਤ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥

सुंदरु चतुरु तत का बेता ॥

Sunddaru chaturu tat kaa betaa ||

Beauty, intelligence, and the realization of reality;

ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥

समदरसी एक द्रिसटेता ॥

Samadarasee ek drisatetaa ||

to look impartially upon all, and to see only the One

ਇਹ ਫਲ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਨੇ ॥

इह फल तिसु जन कै मुखि भने ॥

Ih phal tisu jan kai mukhi bhane ||

These blessings come to one who chants the Naam with his mouth,

ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਚਨ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਨੇ ॥੬॥

गुर नानक नाम बचन मनि सुने ॥६॥

Gur naanak naam bachan mani sune ||6||

And hears the Word with his ears through Guru Nanak. ||6||


ਇਹੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਜਪੈ ਮਨਿ ਕੋਇ ॥

इहु निधानु जपै मनि कोइ ॥

Ihu nidhaanu japai mani koi ||

One who chants this treasure in his mind

ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभ जुग महि ता की गति होइ ॥

Sabh jug mahi taa kee gati hoi ||

In every age, he attains salvation.

ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

गुण गोबिंद नाम धुनि बाणी ॥

Gu(nn) gobindd naam dhuni baa(nn)ee ||

In it is the Glory of God, the Naam, the chanting of Gurbani.

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਬਖਾਣੀ ॥

सिम्रिति सासत्र बेद बखाणी ॥

Simriti saasatr bed bakhaa(nn)ee ||

The Simritees, the Shaastras and the Vedas speak of it.

ਸਗਲ ਮਤਾਂਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ॥

सगल मतांत केवल हरि नाम ॥

Sagal mataant keval hari naam ||

The essence of all religion is the Lord's Name alone.

ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਗਤ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥

गोबिंद भगत कै मनि बिस्राम ॥

Gobindd bhagat kai mani bisraam ||

It abides in the minds of the devotees of God.

ਕੋਟਿ ਅਪ੍ਰਾਧ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਟੈ ॥

कोटि अप्राध साधसंगि मिटै ॥

Koti apraadh saadhasanggi mitai ||

Millions of sins are erased, in the Company of the Holy.

ਸੰਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੈ ॥

संत क्रिपा ते जम ते छुटै ॥

Santt kripaa te jam te chhutai ||

By the Grace of the Saint, one escapes the Messenger of Death.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

जा कै मसतकि करम प्रभि पाए ॥

Jaa kai masataki karam prbhi paae ||

Those, who have such pre-ordained destiny on their foreheads,

ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਆਏ ॥੭॥

साध सरणि नानक ते आए ॥७॥

Saadh sara(nn)i naanak te aae ||7||

O Nanak, enter the Sanctuary of the Saints. ||7||


ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁਨੈ ਲਾਇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥

जिसु मनि बसै सुनै लाइ प्रीति ॥

Jisu mani basai sunai laai preeti ||

One, within whose mind it abides, and who listens to it with love

ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥

तिसु जन आवै हरि प्रभु चीति ॥

Tisu jan aavai hari prbhu cheeti ||

That humble person consciously remembers the Lord God.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥

जनम मरन ता का दूखु निवारै ॥

Janam maran taa kaa dookhu nivaarai ||

The pains of birth and death are removed.

ਦੁਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਉਧਾਰੈ ॥

दुलभ देह ततकाल उधारै ॥

Dulabh deh tatakaal udhaarai ||

The human body, so difficult to obtain, is instantly redeemed.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਭਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥

निरमल सोभा अम्रित ता की बानी ॥

Niramal sobhaa ammmrit taa kee baanee ||

Spotlessly pure is his reputation, and ambrosial is his speech.

ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥

एकु नामु मन माहि समानी ॥

Eku naamu man maahi samaanee ||

The One Name permeates his mind.

ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ॥

दूख रोग बिनसे भै भरम ॥

Dookh rog binase bhai bharam ||

Sorrow, sickness, fear and doubt depart.

ਸਾਧ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ ॥

साध नाम निरमल ता के करम ॥

Saadh naam niramal taa ke karam ||

He is called a Holy person; his actions are immaculate and pure.

ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਬਨੀ ॥

सभ ते ऊच ता की सोभा बनी ॥

Sabh te uch taa kee sobhaa banee ||

His glory becomes the highest of all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹ ਗੁਣਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ॥੮॥੨੪॥

नानक इह गुणि नामु सुखमनी ॥८॥२४॥

Naanak ih gu(nn)i naamu sukhamanee ||8||24||

O Nanak, by these Glorious Virtues, this is named Sukhmani, Peace of mind. ||8||24||

जलि थलि महीअलि पूरिआ सुआमी सिरजनहारु ॥

Jali thali maheeali pooriaa suaamee sirajanahaaru ||

The Creator Lord and Master is pervading the water, the land, and the sky.

ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

अनिक भांति होइ पसरिआ नानक एकंकारु ॥१॥

Anik bhaanti hoi pasariaa naanak ekankkaaru ||1||

In so many ways, the One, the Universal Creator has diffused Himself, O Nanak. ||1||

Ekam ekankkaaru prbhu karau banddanaa dhiaai ||

The first day of the lunar cycle: Bow in humility and meditate on the One, the Universal Creator Lord God.

ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥

गुण गोबिंद गुपाल प्रभ सरनि परउ हरि राइ ॥

Gu(nn) gobindd gupaal prbh sarani parau hari raai ||

Praise God, the Lord of the Universe, the Sustainer of the World; seek the Sanctuary of the Lord, our King.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਸੁਖ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

ता की आस कलिआण सुख जा ते सभु कछु होइ ॥

Taa kee aas kaliaa(nn) sukh jaa te sabhu kachhu hoi ||

Place your hopes in Him, for salvation and peace; all things come from Him.

ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

चारि कुंट दह दिसि भ्रमिओ तिसु बिनु अवरु न कोइ ॥

Chaari kuntt dah disi bhrmio tisu binu avaru na koi ||

I wandered around the four corners of the world and in the ten directions, but I saw nothing except Him.

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸੁਨੇ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

बेद पुरान सिम्रिति सुने बहु बिधि करउ बीचारु ॥

Bed puraan simriti sune bahu bidhi karau beechaaru ||

I listened to the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees, and I pondered over them in so many ways.

ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਭੈ ਹਰਨ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥

पतित उधारन भै हरन सुख सागर निरंकार ॥

Patit udhaaran bhai haran sukh saagar nirankkaar ||

The Saving Grace of sinners, the Destroyer of fear, the Ocean of peace, the Formless Lord.

ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਦੇਨਹਾਰੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

दाता भुगता देनहारु तिसु बिनु अवरु न जाइ ॥

Daataa bhugataa denahaaru tisu binu avaru na jaai ||

The Great Giver, the Enjoyer, the Bestower - there is no place at all without Him.

ਜੋ ਚਾਹਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੧॥

जो चाहहि सोई मिलै नानक हरि गुन गाइ ॥१॥

Jo chaahahi soee milai naanak hari gun gaai ||1||

You shall obtain all that you desire, O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||


ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਤ ॥

गोबिंद जसु गाईऐ हरि नीत ॥

Gobindd jasu gaaeeai hari neet ||

Sing the Praises of the Lord, the Lord of the Universe, each and every day.

ਮਿਲਿ ਭਜੀਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मिलि भजीऐ साधसंगि मेरे मीत ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mili bhajeeai saadhasanggi mere meet ||1|| rahaau ||

Join the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and vibrate, meditate on Him, O my friend. ||1|| Pause ||

ਕਰਉ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਅਨਿਕ ਵਾਰ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥

करउ बंदना अनिक वार सरनि परउ हरि राइ ॥

Karau banddanaa anik vaar sarani parau hari raai ||

Bow in humility to the Lord, over and over again, and enter the Sanctuary of the Lord, our King.

ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਟੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਭਾਉ ਮਿਟਾਇ ॥੨॥

भ्रमु कटीऐ नानक साधसंगि दुतीआ भाउ मिटाइ ॥२॥

Bhrmu kateeai naanak saadhasanggi duteeaa bhaau mitaai ||2||

Doubt is eradicated, O Nanak, in the Company of the Holy, and the love of duality is eliminated. ||2||

दुतीआ दुरमति दूरि करि गुर सेवा करि नीत ॥

Duteeaa duramati doori kari gur sevaa kari neet ||

The second day of the lunar cycle: Get rid of your evil-mindedness, and serve the Guru continually.

ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੀਤ ॥

राम रतनु मनि तनि बसै तजि कामु क्रोधु लोभु मीत ॥

Raam ratanu mani tani basai taji kaamu krodhu lobhu meet ||

The jewel of the Lord's Name shall come to dwell in your mind and body, when you renounce sexual desire, anger and greed, O my friend.

ਮਰਣੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਕਲੇਸ ॥

मरणु मिटै जीवनु मिलै बिनसहि सगल कलेस ॥

Mara(nn)u mitai jeevanu milai binasahi sagal kales ||

Conquer death and obtain eternal life; all your troubles will depart.

ਆਪੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਵੇਸ ॥

आपु तजहु गोबिंद भजहु भाउ भगति परवेस ॥

Aapu tajahu gobindd bhajahu bhaau bhagati paraves ||

Renounce your self-conceit and vibrate upon the Lord of the Universe; loving devotion to Him shall permeate your being.

ਲਾਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੋਟਾ ਹਿਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਤਿਵੰਤ ॥

लाभु मिलै तोटा हिरै हरि दरगह पतिवंत ॥

Laabhu milai totaa hirai hari daragah pativantt ||

You shall earn profit and suffer no loss, and in the Court of the Lord you shall be honored.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਵੈ ਸਾਚ ਸਾਹ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥

राम नाम धनु संचवै साच साह भगवंत ॥

Raam naam dhanu sancchavai saach saah bhagavantt ||

Those who gather in the riches of the Lord's Name are truly wealthy, and very blessed.

ਊਠਤ ਬੈਠਤ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਹੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥

ऊठत बैठत हरि भजहु साधू संगि परीति ॥

Uthat baithat hari bhajahu saadhoo sanggi pareeti ||

So, when standing up and sitting down, vibrate upon the Lord, and cherish the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੁਟਿ ਗਈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਸੇ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੨॥

नानक दुरमति छुटि गई पारब्रहम बसे चीति ॥२॥

Naanak duramati chhuti gaee paarabrham base cheeti ||2||

O Nanak, evil-mindedness is eradicated, when the Supreme Lord God comes to dwell in the mind. ||2||

ਤੀਨਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਜਗਤ ਕਉ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

Teeni biaapahi jagat kau tureeaa paavai koi ||

The world is in the grip of the three qualities; only a few attain the fourth state of absorption.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਏ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

नानक संत निरमल भए जिन मनि वसिआ सोइ ॥३॥

Naanak santt niramal bhae jin mani vasiaa soi ||3||

O Nanak, the Saints are pure and immaculate; the Lord abides within their minds. ||3||

The third day of the lunar cycle: Those who are bound by the three qualities gather poison as their fruit; now they are good, and now they are bad.

ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਭ੍ਰਮਤਉ ਘਣੋ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ਮੀਚੁ ॥

नरक सुरग भ्रमतउ घणो सदा संघारै मीचु ॥

Narak surag bhrmatau gha(nn)o sadaa sangghaarai meechu ||

They wander endlessly in heaven and hell, until death annihilates them.

ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਸਹਸਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਇ ॥

हरख सोग सहसा संसारु हउ हउ करत बिहाइ ॥

Harakh sog sahasaa sanssaaru hau hau karat bihaai ||

In pleasure and pain and worldly cynicism, they pass their lives acting in ego.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਏ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਇ ॥

जिनि कीए तिसहि न जाणनी चितवहि अनिक उपाइ ॥

Jini keee tisahi na jaa(nn)anee chitavahi anik upaai ||

They do not know the One who created them; they think up all sorts of schemes and plans.

ਆਧਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਰਸ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ਤਾਪ ॥

आधि बिआधि उपाधि रस कबहु न तूटै ताप ॥

Aadhi biaadhi upaadhi ras kabahu na tootai taap ||

Their minds and bodies are distracted by pleasure and pain, and their fever never departs.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਧਨੀ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥

पारब्रहम पूरन धनी नह बूझै परताप ॥

Paarabrham pooran dhanee nah boojhai parataap ||

They do not realize the glorious radiance of the Supreme Lord God, the Perfect Lord and Master.

ਮੋਹ ਭਰਮ ਬੂਡਤ ਘਣੋ ਮਹਾ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਵਾਸ ॥

मोह भरम बूडत घणो महा नरक महि वास ॥

Moh bharam boodat gha(nn)o mahaa narak mahi vaas ||

So many are being drowned in emotional attachment and doubt; they dwell in the most horrible hell.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਸ ॥੩॥

करि किरपा प्रभ राखि लेहु नानक तेरी आस ॥३॥

Kari kirapaa prbh raakhi lehu naanak teree aas ||3||

Please bless me with Your Mercy, God, and save me! Nanak places his hopes in You. ||3||

ਚਤੁਰ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਿਨਿ ਤਜਿਆ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

चतुर सिआणा सुघड़ु सोइ जिनि तजिआ अभिमानु ॥

Chatur siaa(nn)aa sugha(rr)u soi jini tajiaa abhimaanu ||

One who renounces egotistical pride is intelligent, wise and refined.

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੪॥

चारि पदारथ असट सिधि भजु नानक हरि नामु ॥४॥

Chaari padaarath asat sidhi bhaju naanak hari naamu ||4||

The four cardinal blessings, and the eight spiritual powers of the Siddhas are obtained, O Nanak, by meditating, vibrating on the Lord's Name. ||4||

ਚਤੁਰਥਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੋਧਿਓ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

चतुरथि चारे बेद सुणि सोधिओ ततु बीचारु ॥

Chaturathi chaare bed su(nn)i sodhio tatu beechaaru ||

The fourth day of the lunar cycle: Listening to the four Vedas, and contemplating the essence of reality, I have come to realize

ਸਰਬ ਖੇਮ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

सरब खेम कलिआण निधि राम नामु जपि सारु ॥

Sarab khem kaliaa(nn) nidhi raam naamu japi saaru ||

That the treasure of all joy and comfort is found in sublime meditation on the Lord's Name.

ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਦੁਖ ਹਰੈ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਲੇਸ ॥

नरक निवारै दुख हरै तूटहि अनिक कलेस ॥

Narak nivaarai dukh harai tootahi anik kales ||

One is saved from hell, suffering is destroyed, countless pains depart,

ਮੀਚੁ ਹੁਟੈ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਪਰਵੇਸ ॥

मीचु हुटै जम ते छुटै हरि कीरतन परवेस ॥

Meechu hutai jam te chhutai hari keeratan paraves ||

Death is overcome, and one escapes the Messenger of Death, by absorption in the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.

ਭਉ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਸੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥

भउ बिनसै अम्रितु रसै रंगि रते निरंकार ॥

Bhau binasai ammmritu rasai ranggi rate nirankkaar ||

Fear departs, and one savors the Ambrosial Nectar, imbued with the Love of the Formless Lord.

ਦੁਖ ਦਾਰਿਦ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਸਹਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰ ॥

दुख दारिद अपवित्रता नासहि नाम अधार ॥

Dukh daarid apavitrtaa naasahi naam adhaar ||

Pain, poverty and impurity are removed, with the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਖੋਜਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥

सुरि नर मुनि जन खोजते सुख सागर गोपाल ॥

Suri nar muni jan khojate sukh saagar gopaal ||

The angels, the seers and the silent sages search for the Ocean of peace, the Sustainer of the world.

ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੁਖੁ ਊਜਲਾ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੪॥

मनु निरमलु मुखु ऊजला होइ नानक साध रवाल ॥४॥

Manu niramalu mukhu ujalaa hoi naanak saadh ravaal ||4||

The mind becomes pure, and one's face is radiant, O Nanak, when one becomes the dust of the feet of the Holy. ||4||

Shalok:

ਪੰਚ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਸੇ ਰਾਚੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

पंच बिकार मन महि बसे राचे माइआ संगि ॥

Pancch bikaar man mahi base raache maaiaa sanggi ||

The five evil passions dwell in the mind of one who is engrossed in Maya.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੫॥

साधसंगि होइ निरमला नानक प्रभ कै रंगि ॥५॥

Saadhasanggi hoi niramalaa naanak prbh kai ranggi ||5||

In the Saadh Sangat, one becomes pure, O Nanak, imbued with the Love of God. ||5||

ਪੰਚਮਿ ਪੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਤੇ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨਿਓ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ॥

पंचमि पंच प्रधान ते जिह जानिओ परपंचु ॥

Pancchami pancch prdhaan te jih jaanio parapancchu ||

The fifth day of the lunar cycle: They are the self-elect, the most distinguished, who know the true nature of the world.

ਕੁਸਮ ਬਾਸ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਘਣੋ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਬਲਬੰਚੁ ॥

कुसम बास बहु रंगु घणो सभ मिथिआ बलबंचु ॥

Kusam baas bahu ranggu gha(nn)o sabh mithiaa balabancchu ||

The many colors and scents of flowers - all worldly deceptions are transitory and false.

ਨਹ ਜਾਪੈ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਨਹ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

नह जापै नह बूझीऐ नह कछु करत बीचारु ॥

Nah jaapai nah boojheeai nah kachhu karat beechaaru ||

People do not see, and they do not understand; they do not reflect upon anything.

ਸੁਆਦ ਮੋਹ ਰਸ ਬੇਧਿਓ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

सुआद मोह रस बेधिओ अगिआनि रचिओ संसारु ॥

Suaad moh ras bedhio agiaani rachio sanssaaru ||

The world is pierced through with attachment to tastes and pleasures, engrossed in ignorance.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਣ ਕੀਨੇ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

जनम मरण बहु जोनि भ्रमण कीने करम अनेक ॥

Janam mara(nn) bahu joni bhrma(nn) keene karam anek ||

Those who perform empty religious rituals will be born, only to die again. They wander through endless incarnations.

ਰਚਨਹਾਰੁ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥

रचनहारु नह सिमरिओ मनि न बीचारि बिबेक ॥

Rachanahaaru nah simario mani na beechaari bibek ||

They do not meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord; their minds do not understand.

ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਿਪਤ ਨ ਰੰਚ ॥

भाउ भगति भगवान संगि माइआ लिपत न रंच ॥

Bhaau bhagati bhagavaan sanggi maaiaa lipat na rancch ||

By loving devotion to the Lord God, you shall not be polluted by Maya at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਲੇ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਜੋ ਨ ਰਚਹਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ॥੫॥

नानक बिरले पाईअहि जो न रचहि परपंच ॥५॥

Naanak birale paaeeahi jo na rachahi parapancch ||5||

O Nanak, how rare are those, who are not engrossed in worldly entanglements. ||5||

ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਊਚੌ ਕਹਹਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ ॥

खट सासत्र ऊचौ कहहि अंतु न पारावार ॥

Khat saasatr uchau kahahi anttu na paaraavaar ||

The six Shaastras proclaim Him to be the greatest; He has no end or limitation.

ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰ ॥੬॥

भगत सोहहि गुण गावते नानक प्रभ कै दुआर ॥६॥

Bhagat sohahi gu(nn) gaavate naanak prbh kai duaar ||6||

The devotees look beauteous, O Nanak, when they sing the Glories of God at His Door. ||6||

ਖਸਟਮਿ ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਕਥਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

खसटमि खट सासत्र कहहि सिम्रिति कथहि अनेक ॥

Khasatami khat saasatr kahahi simmmriti kathahi anek ||

The sixth day of the lunar cycle: The six Shaastras say, and countless Simritees assert,

ਊਤਮੁ ਊਚੌ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਖ ॥

ऊतमु ऊचौ पारब्रहमु गुण अंतु न जाणहि सेख ॥

Utamu uchau paarabrhamu gu(nn) anttu na jaa(nn)ahi sekh ||

That the Supreme Lord God is the most sublime and lofty. Even the thousand-tongued serpent does not know the limits of His Glories.

ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੁਕ ਬਿਆਸ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥

नारद मुनि जन सुक बिआस जसु गावत गोबिंद ॥

Naarad muni jan suk biaas jasu gaavat gobindd ||

Naarad, the humble beings, Suk and Vyaasa sing the Praises of the Lord of the Universe.

ਰਸ ਗੀਧੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬੀਧੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਚੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥

रस गीधे हरि सिउ बीधे भगत रचे भगवंत ॥

Ras geedhe hari siu beedhe bhagat rache bhagavantt ||

They are imbued with the Lord's essence; united with Him; they are absorbed in devotional worship of the Lord God.

ਮੋਹ ਮਾਨ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਪਾਈ ਸਰਨਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

मोह मान भ्रमु बिनसिओ पाई सरनि दइआल ॥

Moh maan bhrmu binasio paaee sarani daiaal ||

Emotional attachment, pride and doubt are eliminated, when one takes to the Sanctuary of the Merciful Lord.

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਸੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥

चरन कमल मनि तनि बसे दरसनु देखि निहाल ॥

Charan kamal mani tani base darasanu dekhi nihaal ||

His Lotus Feet abide within my mind and body and I am enraptured, beholding the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.

ਲਾਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੋਟਾ ਹਿਰੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

लाभु मिलै तोटा हिरै साधसंगि लिव लाइ ॥

Laabhu milai totaa hirai saadhasanggi liv laai ||

People reap their profits, and suffer no loss, when they embrace love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਖਾਟਿ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੬॥

खाटि खजाना गुण निधि हरे नानक नामु धिआइ ॥६॥

Khaati khajaanaa gu(nn) nidhi hare naanak naamu dhiaai ||6||

They gather in the treasure of the Lord, the Ocean of Excellence, O Nanak, by meditating on the Naam. ||6||

ਸੰਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਥਹਿ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਤਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

संत मंडल हरि जसु कथहि बोलहि सति सुभाइ ॥

Santt manddal hari jasu kathahi bolahi sati subhaai ||

In the gathering of the Saints, chant the Praises of the Lord, and speak the Truth with love.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਐ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੭॥

नानक मनु संतोखीऐ एकसु सिउ लिव लाइ ॥७॥

Naanak manu santtokheeai ekasu siu liv laai ||7||

O Nanak, the mind becomes contented, enshrining love for the One Lord. ||7||

ਸਪਤਮਿ ਸੰਚਹੁ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਟੂਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

सपतमि संचहु नाम धनु टूटि न जाहि भंडार ॥

Sapatami sancchahu naam dhanu tooti na jaahi bhanddaar ||

The seventh day of the lunar cycle: Gather the wealth of the Naam; this is a treasure which shall never be exhausted.

ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ ॥

संतसंगति महि पाईऐ अंतु न पारावार ॥

Santtasanggati mahi paaeeai anttu na paaraavaar ||

In the Society of the Saints, He is obtained; He has no end or limitations.

ਆਪੁ ਤਜਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਹੁ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥

आपु तजहु गोबिंद भजहु सरनि परहु हरि राइ ॥

Aapu tajahu gobindd bhajahu sarani parahu hari raai ||

Renounce your selfishness and conceit, and meditate, vibrate on the Lord of the Universe; take to the Sanctuary of the Lord, our King.

ਦੂਖ ਹਰੈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

दूख हरै भवजलु तरै मन चिंदिआ फलु पाइ ॥

Dookh harai bhavajalu tarai man chinddiaa phalu paai ||

Your pains shall depart - swim across the terrifying world-ocean, and obtain the fruits of your mind's desires.

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

आठ पहर मनि हरि जपै सफलु जनमु परवाणु ॥

Aath pahar mani hari japai saphalu janamu paravaa(nn)u ||

One who meditates on the Lord twenty-four hours a day - fruitful and blessed is his coming into the world.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

अंतरि बाहरि सदा संगि करनैहारु पछाणु ॥

Anttari baahari sadaa sanggi karanaihaaru pachhaa(nn)u ||

Inwardly and outwardly, realize that the Creator Lord is always with you.

ਸੋ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਸੋ ਸਖਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥

सो साजनु सो सखा मीतु जो हरि की मति देइ ॥

So saajanu so sakhaa meetu jo hari kee mati dei ||

He is your friend, your companion, your very best friend, who imparts the Teachings of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇਇ ॥੭॥

नानक तिसु बलिहारणै हरि हरि नामु जपेइ ॥७॥

Naanak tisu balihaara(nn)ai hari hari naamu japei ||7||

Nanak is a sacrifice to one who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||7||

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਤਜੀਅਹਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥

आठ पहर गुन गाईअहि तजीअहि अवरि जंजाल ॥

Aath pahar gun gaaeeahi tajeeahi avari janjjaal ||

Sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord twenty-four hours a day; renounce other entanglements.

ਜਮਕੰਕਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੮॥

जमकंकरु जोहि न सकई नानक प्रभू दइआल ॥८॥

Jamakankkaru johi na sakaee naanak prbhoo daiaal ||8||

The Minister of Death cannot even see that person, O Nanak, unto whom God is merciful. ||8||
