तुधु बचनि गुर कै वसि कीआ आदि पुरखु बनवारीआ ॥

Tudhu bachani gur kai vasi keeaa aadi purakhu banavaareeaa ||

Through the Guru's Word, you have captured the heart of the Primal Being, the Lord of the World.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀਆ ॥

तूं आपि चलिआ आपि रहिआ आपि सभ कल धारीआ ॥

Toonn aapi chaliaa aapi rahiaa aapi sabh kal dhaareeaa ||

You Yourself move, and You Yourself stand still; You Yourself support the whole creation.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੈਜ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਭ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀਆ ॥੨॥

बिनवंति नानक पैज राखहु सभ सेवक सरनि तुमारीआ ॥२॥

Binavantti naanak paij raakhahu sabh sevak sarani tumaareeaa ||2||

Prays Nanak, please preserve my honor; all Your servants seek the Protection of Your Sanctuary. ||2||


ਮੋਹਨ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਦਰਸ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥

मोहन तुधु सतसंगति धिआवै दरस धिआना ॥

Mohan tudhu satasanggati dhiaavai daras dhiaanaa ||

O Mohan, the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, meditates on you; they meditate on the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਮੋਹਨ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਤੁਧੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਨਿਦਾਨਾ ॥

मोहन जमु नेड़ि न आवै तुधु जपहि निदाना ॥

Mohan jamu ne(rr)i na aavai tudhu japahi nidaanaa ||

O Mohan, the Messenger of Death does not even approach those who meditate on You, at the last moment.

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਲਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੋ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੇ ॥

जमकालु तिन कउ लगै नाही जो इक मनि धिआवहे ॥

Jamakaalu tin kau lagai naahee jo ik mani dhiaavahe ||

The Messenger of Death cannot touch those who meditate on You single-mindedly.

ਮਨਿ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਜਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਰਾਧਹਿ ਸੇ ਸਭੇ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹੇ ॥

मनि बचनि करमि जि तुधु अराधहि से सभे फल पावहे ॥

Mani bachani karami ji tudhu araadhahi se sabhe phal paavahe ||

Those who worship and adore You in thought, word and deed, obtain all fruits and rewards.

ਮਲ ਮੂਤ ਮੂੜ ਜਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਹੋਤੇ ਸਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਰਸੁ ਸੁਗਿਆਨਾ ॥

मल मूत मूड़ जि मुगध होते सि देखि दरसु सुगिआना ॥

Mal moot moo(rr) ji mugadh hote si dekhi darasu sugiaanaa ||

Those who are foolish and stupid, filthy with urine and manure, become all-knowing upon gaining the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਜੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨਾ ॥੩॥

बिनवंति नानक राजु निहचलु पूरन पुरख भगवाना ॥३॥

Binavantti naanak raaju nihachalu pooran purakh bhagavaanaa ||3||

Prays Nanak, Your Kingdom is Eternal, O Perfect Primal Lord God. ||3||


ਮੋਹਨ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਫਲੁ ਫਲਿਆ ਸਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਰੇ ॥

मोहन तूं सुफलु फलिआ सणु परवारे ॥

Mohan toonn suphalu phaliaa sa(nn)u paravaare ||

O Mohan, you have blossomed forth with the flower of your family.

ਮੋਹਨ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਮੀਤ ਭਾਈ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਭਿ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

मोहन पुत्र मीत भाई कुट्मब सभि तारे ॥

Mohan putr meet bhaaee kutambb sabhi taare ||

O Mohan, your children, friends, siblings and relatives have all been saved.

ਤਾਰਿਆ ਜਹਾਨੁ ਲਹਿਆ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

तारिआ जहानु लहिआ अभिमानु जिनी दरसनु पाइआ ॥

Taariaa jahaanu lahiaa abhimaanu jinee darasanu paaiaa ||

You save those who give up their egotistical pride, upon gaining the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਜਿਨੀ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥

जिनी तुधनो धंनु कहिआ तिन जमु नेड़ि न आइआ ॥

Jinee tudhano dhannu kahiaa tin jamu ne(rr)i na aaiaa ||

The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who call you 'blessed'.

ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਥੇ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥

बेअंत गुण तेरे कथे न जाही सतिगुर पुरख मुरारे ॥

Beantt gu(nn) tere kathe na jaahee satigur purakh muraare ||

Your Virtues are unlimited - they cannot be described, O True Guru, Primal Being, Destroyer of demons.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਟੇਕ ਰਾਖੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੨॥

बिनवंति नानक टेक राखी जितु लगि तरिआ संसारे ॥४॥२॥

Binavantti naanak tek raakhee jitu lagi tariaa sanssaare ||4||2||

Prays Nanak, Yours is that Anchor, holding onto which the whole world is saved. ||4||2||

ਪਤਿਤ ਅਸੰਖ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਨਹ ਪੁਨਹ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥

पतित असंख पुनीत करि पुनह पुनह बलिहार ॥

Patit asankkh puneet kari punah punah balihaar ||

Countless sinners have been purified; I am a sacrifice, over and over again, to You.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦਾਹਨਹਾਰ ॥੧॥

नानक राम नामु जपि पावको तिन किलबिख दाहनहार ॥१॥

Naanak raam naamu japi paavako tin kilabikh daahanahaar ||1||

O Nanak, meditation on the Lord's Name is the fire which burns away sinful mistakes like straw. ||1||

ਜਪਿ ਮਨਾ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਧੋ ॥

जपि मना तूं राम नराइणु गोविंदा हरि माधो ॥

Japi manaa toonn raam naraai(nn)u govinddaa hari maadho ||

Meditate, O my mind, on the Lord God, the Lord of the Universe, the Lord, the Master of Wealth.

ਧਿਆਇ ਮਨਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਮੁਕੰਦੇ ਕਟੀਐ ਕਾਲ ਦੁਖ ਫਾਧੋ ॥

धिआइ मना मुरारि मुकंदे कटीऐ काल दुख फाधो ॥

Dhiaai manaa muraari mukandde kateeai kaal dukh phaadho ||

Meditate, O my mind, on the Lord, the Destroyer of ego, the Giver of salvation, who cuts away the noose of agonizing death.

ਦੁਖਹਰਣ ਦੀਨ ਸਰਣ ਸ੍ਰੀਧਰ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ॥

दुखहरण दीन सरण स्रीधर चरन कमल अराधीऐ ॥

Dukhahara(nn) deen sara(nn) sreedhar charan kamal araadheeai ||

Meditate lovingly on the Lotus Feet of the Lord, the Destroyer of distress, the Protector of the poor, the Lord of excellence.

ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਨਿਮਖ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਾਧੀਐ ॥

जम पंथु बिखड़ा अगनि सागरु निमख सिमरत साधीऐ ॥

Jam pantthu bikha(rr)aa agani saagaru nimakh simarat saadheeai ||

The treacherous path of death and the terrifying ocean of fire are crossed over by meditating in remembrance on the Lord, even for an instant.

ਕਲਿਮਲਹ ਦਹਤਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਅਰਾਧੋ ॥

कलिमलह दहता सुधु करता दिनसु रैणि अराधो ॥

Kalimalah dahataa sudhu karataa dinasu rai(nn)i araadho ||

Meditate day and night on the Lord, the Destroyer of desire, the Purifier of pollution.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਮਾਧੋ ॥੧॥

बिनवंति नानक करहु किरपा गोपाल गोबिंद माधो ॥१॥

Binavantti naanak karahu kirapaa gopaal gobindd maadho ||1||

Prays Nanak, please be Merciful to me, O Cherisher of the world, Lord of the Universe, Lord of wealth. ||1||


ਸਿਮਰਿ ਮਨਾ ਦਾਮੋਦਰੁ ਦੁਖਹਰੁ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥

सिमरि मना दामोदरु दुखहरु भै भंजनु हरि राइआ ॥

Simari manaa daamodaru dukhaharu bhai bhanjjanu hari raaiaa ||

O my mind, remember the Lord in meditation; He is the Destroyer of pain, the Eradicator of fear, the Sovereign Lord King.

ਸ੍ਰੀਰੰਗੋ ਦਇਆਲ ਮਨੋਹਰੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਬਿਰਦਾਇਆ ॥

स्रीरंगो दइआल मनोहरु भगति वछलु बिरदाइआ ॥

Sreeranggo daiaal manoharu bhagati vachhalu biradaaiaa ||

He is the Greatest Lover, the Merciful Master, the Enticer of the mind, the Support of His devotees - this is His very nature.

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਪੂਰਨ ਮਨਹਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

भगति वछल पुरख पूरन मनहि चिंदिआ पाईऐ ॥

Bhagati vachhal purakh pooran manahi chinddiaa paaeeai ||

The Perfect Lord is the Lover of His devotees; He fulfills the desires of the mind.

ਤਮ ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਉਧਾਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥

तम अंध कूप ते उधारै नामु मंनि वसाईऐ ॥

Tam anddh koop te udhaarai naamu manni vasaaeeai ||

He lifts us up out of the deep, dark pit; enshrine His Name within your mind.

ਸੁਰ ਸਿਧ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਗੁਣ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

सुर सिध गण गंधरब मुनि जन गुण अनिक भगती गाइआ ॥

Sur sidh ga(nn) ganddharab muni jan gu(nn) anik bhagatee gaaiaa ||

The gods, the Siddhas, the angels, the heavenly singers, the silent sages and the devotees sing Your countless Glorious Praises.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

बिनवंति नानक करहु किरपा पारब्रहम हरि राइआ ॥२॥

Binavantti naanak karahu kirapaa paarabrham hari raaiaa ||2||

Prays Nanak, please be merciful to me, O Supreme Lord God, my King. ||2||


ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨਾ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

चेति मना पारब्रहमु परमेसरु सरब कला जिनि धारी ॥

Cheti manaa paarabrhamu paramesaru sarab kalaa jini dhaaree ||

O my mind, be conscious of the Supreme Lord God, the Transcendent Lord, who wields all power.

ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮੈ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰੀ ॥

करुणा मै समरथु सुआमी घट घट प्राण अधारी ॥

Karu(nn)aa mai samarathu suaamee ghat ghat praa(nn) adhaaree ||

He is All-powerful, the Embodiment of compassion. He is the Master of each and every heart;

ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਤਾ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੋ ॥

प्राण मन तन जीअ दाता बेअंत अगम अपारो ॥

Praa(nn) man tan jeea daataa beantt agam apaaro ||

He is the Support of the breath of life. He is the Giver of the breath of life, of mind, body and soul. He is Infinite, Inaccessible and Unfathomable.

ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਮੋਹਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਦਾਰੋ ॥

सरणि जोगु समरथु मोहनु सरब दोख बिदारो ॥

Sara(nn)i jogu samarathu mohanu sarab dokh bidaaro ||

The All-powerful Lord is our Sanctuary; He is the Enticer of the mind, who banishes all sorrows.

ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਸਭਿ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥

रोग सोग सभि दोख बिनसहि जपत नामु मुरारी ॥

Rog sog sabhi dokh binasahi japat naamu muraaree ||

All illnesses, sufferings and pains are dispelled, by chanting the Name of the Lord.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਭ ਕਲ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

बिनवंति नानक करहु किरपा समरथ सभ कल धारी ॥३॥

Binavantti naanak karahu kirapaa samarath sabh kal dhaaree ||3||

Prays Nanak, please be merciful to me, All-powerful Lord; You are the Wielder of all power. ||3||


ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ਮਨਾ ਅਚੁਤ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

गुण गाउ मना अचुत अबिनासी सभ ते ऊच दइआला ॥

Gu(nn) gaau manaa achut abinaasee sabh te uch daiaalaa ||

O my mind, sing the Glorious Praises of the Imperishable, Eternal, Merciful Master, the Highest of all.

ਬਿਸੰਭਰੁ ਦੇਵਨ ਕਉ ਏਕੈ ਸਰਬ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥

बिस्मभरु देवन कउ एकै सरब करै प्रतिपाला ॥

Bisambbharu devan kau ekai sarab karai prtipaalaa ||

The One Lord is the Sustainer of the Universe, the Great Giver; He is the Cherisher of all.

ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ਮਹਾ ਦਇਆਲ ਦਾਨਾ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰੇ ਸਭ ਕਿਸੈ ॥

प्रतिपाल महा दइआल दाना दइआ धारे सभ किसै ॥

Prtipaal mahaa daiaal daanaa daiaa dhaare sabh kisai ||

The Cherisher Lord is so very merciful and wise; He is compassionate to all.

ਕਾਲੁ ਕੰਟਕੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਨਾਸੈ ਜੀਅ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਸੈ ॥

कालु कंटकु लोभु मोहु नासै जीअ जा कै प्रभु बसै ॥

Kaalu kanttaku lobhu mohu naasai jeea jaa kai prbhu basai ||

The pains of death, greed and emotional attachment simply vanish, when God comes to dwell in the soul.

ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਫਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਭਈ ਪੂਰਨ ਘਾਲਾ ॥

सुप्रसंन देवा सफल सेवा भई पूरन घाला ॥

Suprsann devaa saphal sevaa bhaee pooran ghaalaa ||

When the Lord is thoroughly pleased, then one's service becomes perfectly fruitful.

ਬਿਨਵੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਛ ਪੁਨੀ ਜਪਤ ਦੀਨ ਦੈਆਲਾ ॥੪॥੩॥

बिनवंत नानक इछ पुनी जपत दीन दैआला ॥४॥३॥

Binavantt naanak ichh punee japat deen daiaalaa ||4||3||

Prays Nanak, my desires are fulfilled by meditating on the Lord, Merciful to the meek. ||4||3||


ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰੇਹਾ ਮਨਾਇ ਲੈਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਤੈ ॥

सुणि सखीए मिलि उदमु करेहा मनाइ लैहि हरि कंतै ॥

Su(nn)i sakheee mili udamu karehaa manaai laihi hari kanttai ||

Listen O my companions: let's join together and make the effort to surrender to our Husband Lord.

ਮਾਨੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਮੋਹਹ ਸਾਧੂ ਮੰਤੈ ॥

मानु तिआगि करि भगति ठगउरी मोहह साधू मंतै ॥

Maanu tiaagi kari bhagati thagauree mohah saadhoo manttai ||

Renouncing our pride, let's charm Him with the potion of devotional worship, and the mantra of the Holy Saints.

ਸਖੀ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਇਹ ਰੀਤਿ ਭਲੀ ਭਗਵੰਤੈ ॥

सखी वसि आइआ फिरि छोडि न जाई इह रीति भली भगवंतै ॥

Sakhee vasi aaiaa phiri chhodi na jaaee ih reeti bhalee bhagavanttai ||

O my companions, when He comes under our power, He shall never leave us again. This is the good nature of the Lord God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਰਾ ਮਰਣ ਭੈ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੰਤੈ ॥੧॥

नानक जरा मरण भै नरक निवारै पुनीत करै तिसु जंतै ॥१॥

Naanak jaraa mara(nn) bhai narak nivaarai puneet karai tisu janttai ||1||

O Nanak, God dispels the fear of old age, death and hell; He purifies His beings. ||1||


ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਇਹ ਭਲੀ ਬਿਨੰਤੀ ਏਹੁ ਮਤਾਂਤੁ ਪਕਾਈਐ ॥

सुणि सखीए इह भली बिनंती एहु मतांतु पकाईऐ ॥

Su(nn)i sakheee ih bhalee binanttee ehu mataantu pakaaeeai ||

Listen, O my companions, to my sincere prayer: let's make this firm resolve.

ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਰਹਤ ਹੋਇ ਗੀਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਹਿ ਗਾਈਐ ॥

सहजि सुभाइ उपाधि रहत होइ गीत गोविंदहि गाईऐ ॥

Sahaji subhaai upaadhi rahat hoi geet govinddahi gaaeeai ||

In the peaceful poise of intuitive bliss, violence will be gone, as we sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.

ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਨਾਸਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

कलि कलेस मिटहि भ्रम नासहि मनि चिंदिआ फलु पाईऐ ॥

Kali kales mitahi bhrm naasahi mani chinddiaa phalu paaeeai ||

Our pains and troubles shall be eradicated, and our doubts shall be dispelled; we will receive the fruits of our minds' desires.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੨॥

पारब्रहम पूरन परमेसर नानक नामु धिआईऐ ॥२॥

Paarabrham pooran paramesar naanak naamu dhiaaeeai ||2||

O Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Supreme Lord God, the Perfect, Transcendent Lord. ||2||


ਸਖੀ ਇਛ ਕਰੀ ਨਿਤ ਸੁਖ ਮਨਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਸ ਪੁਜਾਏ ॥

सखी इछ करी नित सुख मनाई प्रभ मेरी आस पुजाए ॥

Sakhee ichh karee nit sukh manaaee prbh meree aas pujaae ||

O my companions, I yearn for Him continually; I invoke His Blessings, and pray that God may fulfill my hopes.

ਚਰਨ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਦਰਸ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਪੇਖਉ ਥਾਨ ਸਬਾਏ ॥

चरन पिआसी दरस बैरागनि पेखउ थान सबाए ॥

Charan piaasee daras bairaagani pekhau thaan sabaae ||

I thirst for His Feet, and I long for the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; I look for Him everywhere.

ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਸੰਗੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਪੁਰਖ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

खोजि लहउ हरि संत जना संगु सम्रिथ पुरख मिलाए ॥

Khoji lahau hari santt janaa sanggu sammrith purakh milaae ||

I search for traces of the Lord in the Society of the Saints; they will unite me with the All-powerful Primal Lord God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਰਿਜਨੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਾਏ ॥੩॥

नानक तिन मिलिआ सुरिजनु सुखदाता से वडभागी माए ॥३॥

Naanak tin miliaa surijanu sukhadaataa se vadabhaagee maae ||3||

O Nanak, those humble, noble beings who meet the Lord, the Giver of peace, are very blessed, O my mother. ||3||


ਸਖੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਸਾ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਨਾਹ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਿਲਿਆ ॥

सखी नालि वसा अपुने नाह पिआरे मेरा मनु तनु हरि संगि हिलिआ ॥

Sakhee naali vasaa apune naah piaare meraa manu tanu hari sanggi hiliaa ||

O my companions, now I dwell with my Beloved Husband; my mind and body are attuned to the Lord.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀਏ ਮੇਰੀ ਨੀਦ ਭਲੀ ਮੈ ਆਪਨੜਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥

सुणि सखीए मेरी नीद भली मै आपनड़ा पिरु मिलिआ ॥

Su(nn)i sakheee meree need bhalee mai aapana(rr)aa piru miliaa ||

Listen, O my companions: now I sleep well, since I found my Husband Lord.

ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਖੋਇਓ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਕਉਲੁ ਖਿਲਿਆ ॥

भ्रमु खोइओ सांति सहजि सुआमी परगासु भइआ कउलु खिलिआ ॥

Bhrmu khoio saanti sahaji suaamee paragaasu bhaiaa kaulu khiliaa ||

My doubts have been dispelled, and I have found intuitive peace and tranquility through my Lord and Master. I have been enlightened, and my heart-lotus has blossomed forth.

The Divine Guru is the sacred shrine of pilgrimage, and the pool of divine ambrosia; bathing in the Guru's wisdom, one experiences the Infinite.

Guradev karataa sabhi paap harataa guradev patit pavit karaa ||

The Divine Guru is the Creator, and the Destroyer of all sins; the Divine Guru is the Purifier of sinners.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਮੰਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਉਧਰਾ ॥

गुरदेव आदि जुगादि जुगु जुगु गुरदेव मंतु हरि जपि उधरा ॥

Guradev aadi jugaadi jugu jugu guradev manttu hari japi udharaa ||

The Divine Guru existed at the primal beginning, throughout the ages, in each and every age. The Divine Guru is the Mantra of the Lord's Name; chanting it, one is saved.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਮ ਮੂੜ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਾ ॥

गुरदेव संगति प्रभ मेलि करि किरपा हम मूड़ पापी जितु लगि तरा ॥

Guradev sanggati prbh meli kari kirapaa ham moo(rr) paapee jitu lagi taraa ||

O God, please be merciful to me, that I may be with the Divine Guru; I am a foolish sinner, but holding onto Him, I am carried across.

ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਮਸਕਰਾ ॥੧॥

He Himself acts, and causes others to act; He Himself can do everything.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਆ ਨ ਹੋਗੁ ॥੧॥

नानक एको रवि रहिआ दूसर होआ न होगु ॥१॥

Naanak eko ravi rahiaa doosar hoaa na hogu ||1||

O Nanak, the One Lord is pervading everywhere; there has never been any other, and there never shall be. ||1||

In the beginning, in the middle, and in the end, He is the Formless Lord.

ਆਪਹਿ ਸੁੰਨ ਆਪਹਿ ਸੁਖ ਆਸਨ ॥

आपहि सुंन आपहि सुख आसन ॥

Aapahi sunn aapahi sukh aasan ||

He Himself is in the absolute state of primal meditation; He Himself is in the seat of peace.

ਆਪਹਿ ਸੁਨਤ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਾਸਨ ॥

आपहि सुनत आप ही जासन ॥

Aapahi sunat aap hee jaasan ||

He Himself listens to His Own Praises.

ਆਪਨ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਹਿ ਉਪਾਇਓ ॥

आपन आपु आपहि उपाइओ ॥

Aapan aapu aapahi upaaio ||

He Himself created Himself.

ਆਪਹਿ ਬਾਪ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਓ ॥

आपहि बाप आप ही माइओ ॥

Aapahi baap aap hee maaio ||

He is His Own Father, He is His Own Mother.

ਆਪਹਿ ਸੂਖਮ ਆਪਹਿ ਅਸਥੂਲਾ ॥

आपहि सूखम आपहि असथूला ॥

Aapahi sookham aapahi asathoolaa ||

He Himself is subtle and etheric; He Himself is manifest and obvious.

ਲਖੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੀਲਾ ॥੧॥

लखी न जाई नानक लीला ॥१॥

Lakhee na jaaee naanak leelaa ||1||

O Nanak, His wondrous play cannot be understood. ||1||

O God, Merciful to the meek, please be kind to me,

तेरे संतन की मनु होइ रवाला ॥ रहाउ ॥

He Himself is formless, and also formed; the One Lord is without attributes, and also with attributes.

ਏਕਹਿ ਏਕ ਬਖਾਨਨੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥

एकहि एक बखाननो नानक एक अनेक ॥१॥

Ekahi ek bakhaanano naanak ek anek ||1||

Describe the One Lord as One, and Only One; O Nanak, He is the One, and the many. ||1||

ਏਕਹਿ ਸੂਤਿ ਪਰੋਵਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

Ekahi sooti parovanahaaraa ||

He strung it upon His one thread.

ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੰ ॥

भिंन भिंन त्रै गुण बिसथारं ॥

Bhinn bhinn trai gu(nn) bisathaarann ||

He created the diverse expanse of the three qualities.

ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਤੇ ਸਰਗੁਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਰੰ ॥

निरगुन ते सरगुन द्रिसटारं ॥

Niragun te saragun drisataarann ||

From formless, He appeared as form.

ਸਗਲ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਉਪਾਇਓ ॥

सगल भाति करि करहि उपाइओ ॥

Sagal bhaati kari karahi upaaio ||

The Creator has created the creation of all sorts.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਮਨ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਢਾਇਓ ॥

जनम मरन मन मोहु बढाइओ ॥

Janam maran man mohu badhaaio ||

The attachment of the mind has led to birth and death.

ਦੁਹੂ ਭਾਤਿ ਤੇ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਰਾ ॥

दुहू भाति ते आपि निरारा ॥

Duhoo bhaati te aapi niraaraa ||

He Himself is above both, untouched and unaffected.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

नानक अंतु न पारावारा ॥२॥

Naanak anttu na paaraavaaraa ||2||

O Nanak, He has no end or limitation. ||2||

Seee saah bhagavantt se sachu samppai hari raasi ||

Those who gather Truth and the riches of the Lord's Name are rich and very fortunate.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਚਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

नानक सचु सुचि पाईऐ तिह संतन कै पासि ॥१॥

Naanak sachu suchi paaeeai tih santtan kai paasi ||1||

O Nanak, truthfulness and purity are obtained from Saints such as these. ||1||

ਸਸਾ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਸੋਊ ॥

ससा सति सति सति सोऊ ॥

Sasaa sati sati sati sou ||

SASSA: True, True, True is that Lord.

ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥

सति पुरख ते भिंन न कोऊ ॥

Sati purakh te bhinn na kou ||

No one is separate from the True Primal Lord.

ਸੋਊ ਸਰਨਿ ਪਰੈ ਜਿਹ ਪਾਯੰ ॥

सोऊ सरनि परै जिह पायं ॥

Sou sarani parai jih paayann ||

They alone enter the Lord's Sanctuary, whom the Lord inspires to enter.

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਸੁਨਾਯੰ ॥

सिमरि सिमरि गुन गाइ सुनायं ॥

Simari simari gun gaai sunaayann ||

Meditating, meditating in remembrance, they sing and preach the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਸੰਸੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਬਿਆਪਤ ॥

संसै भरमु नही कछु बिआपत ॥

Sanssai bharamu nahee kachhu biaapat ||

Doubt and skepticism do not affect them at all.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪੁ ਤਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਜਾਪਤ ॥

प्रगट प्रतापु ताहू को जापत ॥

Prgat prtaapu taahoo ko jaapat ||

They behold the manifest glory of the Lord.

ਸੋ ਸਾਧੂ ਇਹ ਪਹੁਚਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

सो साधू इह पहुचनहारा ॥

So saadhoo ih pahuchanahaaraa ||

They are the Holy Saints - they reach this destination.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

नानक ता कै सद बलिहारा ॥३॥

Naanak taa kai sad balihaaraa ||3||

Nanak is forever a sacrifice to them. ||3||

Dhanu dhanu kahaa pukaarate maaiaa moh sabh koor ||

Why are you crying out for riches and wealth? All this emotional attachment to Maya is false.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੋਤ ਜਾਤ ਸਭੁ ਧੂਰ ॥੧॥

नाम बिहूने नानका होत जात सभु धूर ॥१॥

Naam bihoone naanakaa hot jaat sabhu dhoor ||1||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, all are reduced to dust. ||1||

DHADHA: The dust of the feet of the Saints is sacred.

ਧਨਿ ਤੇਊ ਜਿਹ ਰੁਚ ਇਆ ਮਨੂਆ ॥

धनि तेऊ जिह रुच इआ मनूआ ॥

Dhani teu jih ruch iaa manooaa ||

Blessed are those whose minds are filled with this longing.

ਧਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਛਹਿ ਸੁਰਗ ਨ ਆਛਹਿ ॥

धनु नही बाछहि सुरग न आछहि ॥

Dhanu nahee baachhahi surag na aachhahi ||

They do not seek wealth, and they do not desire paradise.

ਅਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਰਜ ਰਾਚਹਿ ॥

अति प्रिअ प्रीति साध रज राचहि ॥

Ati pria preeti saadh raj raachahi ||

They are immersed in the deep love of their Beloved, and the dust of the feet of the Holy.

ਧੰਧੇ ਕਹਾ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਤਾਹੂ ॥

धंधे कहा बिआपहि ताहू ॥

Dhanddhe kahaa biaapahi taahoo ||

How can worldly affairs affect those

ਜੋ ਏਕ ਛਾਡਿ ਅਨ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਹੂ ॥

जो एक छाडि अन कतहि न जाहू ॥

Jo ek chhaadi an katahi na jaahoo ||

Who do not abandon the One Lord, and who go nowhere else?

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੀਐ ਦੀਓ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਮ ॥

जा कै हीऐ दीओ प्रभ नाम ॥

Jaa kai heeai deeo prbh naam ||

One whose heart is filled with God's Name,

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੪॥

नानक साध पूरन भगवान ॥४॥

Naanak saadh pooran bhagavaan ||4||

O Nanak, is a perfect spiritual being of God. ||4||

Anik bhekh aru (ng)iaan dhiaan manahathi miliau na koi ||

By all sorts of religious robes, knowledge, meditation and stubborn-mindedness, no one has ever met God.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਭਈ ਭਗਤੁ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

कहु नानक किरपा भई भगतु ङिआनी सोइ ॥१॥

Kahu naanak kirapaa bhaee bhagatu (ng)iaanee soi ||1||

Says Nanak, those upon whom God showers His Mercy, are devotees of spiritual wisdom. ||1||

NGANGA: Spiritual wisdom is not obtained by mere words of mouth.

अनिक जुगति सासत्र करि भातउ ॥

Anik jugati saasatr kari bhaatau ||

ਙਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਇ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਸੋਊ ॥

ङिआनी सोइ जा कै द्रिड़ सोऊ ॥

(Ng)iaanee soi jaa kai dri(rr) sou ||

They alone are spiritually wise, whose minds are firmly fixed on the Lord.

ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਛੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਊ ॥

कहत सुनत कछु जोगु न होऊ ॥

Kahat sunat kachhu jogu na hou ||

Hearing and telling stories, no one attains Yoga.

ਙਿਆਨੀ ਰਹਤ ਆਗਿਆ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥

ङिआनी रहत आगिआ द्रिड़ु जा कै ॥

(Ng)iaanee rahat aagiaa dri(rr)u jaa kai ||

They alone are spiritually wise, who remain firmly committed to the Lord's Command.

ਉਸਨ ਸੀਤ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥

उसन सीत समसरि सभ ता कै ॥

Usan seet samasari sabh taa kai ||

Heat and cold are all the same to them.

ਙਿਆਨੀ ਤਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

ङिआनी ततु गुरमुखि बीचारी ॥

(Ng)iaanee tatu guramukhi beechaaree ||

The true people of spiritual wisdom are the Gurmukhs, who contemplate the essence of reality;

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੫॥

नानक जा कउ किरपा धारी ॥५॥

Naanak jaa kau kirapaa dhaaree ||5||

O Nanak, the Lord showers His Mercy upon them. ||5||

ਆਵਨ ਆਏ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੁ ਢੋਰ ॥

आवन आए स्रिसटि महि बिनु बूझे पसु ढोर ॥

Aavan aae srisati mahi binu boojhe pasu dhor ||

Those who have come into the world without understanding are like animals and beasts.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਬੁਝੈ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਭਾਗ ਮਥੋਰ ॥੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि सो बुझै जा कै भाग मथोर ॥१॥

Naanak guramukhi so bujhai jaa kai bhaag mathor ||1||

O Nanak, those who become Gurmukh understand; upon their foreheads is such pre-ordained destiny. ||1||

ਯਾ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਏਕਹਿ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥

या जुग महि एकहि कउ आइआ ॥

Yaa jug mahi ekahi kau aaiaa ||

They have come into this world to meditate on the One Lord.

ਜਨਮਤ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

जनमत मोहिओ मोहनी माइआ ॥

Janamat mohio mohanee maaiaa ||

But ever since their birth, they have been enticed by the fascination of Maya.

ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਟ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਤਪ ਕਰਤੇ ॥

गरभ कुंट महि उरध तप करते ॥

Garabh kuntt mahi uradh tap karate ||

Upside-down in the chamber of the womb, they performed intense meditation.

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਹਤੇ ॥

सासि सासि सिमरत प्रभु रहते ॥

Saasi saasi simarat prbhu rahate ||

They remembered God in meditation with each and every breath.

ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰੇ ਜੋ ਛੋਡਿ ਛਡਾਨਾ ॥

उरझि परे जो छोडि छडाना ॥

Urajhi pare jo chhodi chhadaanaa ||

But now, they are entangled in things which they must leave behind.

ਦੇਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਮਨਹਿ ਬਿਸਰਾਨਾ ॥

देवनहारु मनहि बिसराना ॥

Devanahaaru manahi bisaraanaa ||

They forget the Great Giver from their minds.

ਧਾਰਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥

धारहु किरपा जिसहि गुसाई ॥

Dhaarahu kirapaa jisahi gusaaee ||

Those upon whom the Lord showers His Mercy,

ਇਤ ਉਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬॥

इत उत नानक तिसु बिसरहु नाही ॥६॥

It ut naanak tisu bisarahu naahee ||6||

O Nanak, they do not forget Him, here or hereafter. ||6||

ਆਵਤ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਬਿਨਾਸ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

आवत हुकमि बिनास हुकमि आगिआ भिंन न कोइ ॥

Aavat hukami binaas hukami aagiaa bhinn na koi ||

By His Command, we come, and by His Command, we go; no one is beyond His Command.

ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤਿਹ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

आवन जाना तिह मिटै नानक जिह मनि सोइ ॥१॥

Aavan jaanaa tih mitai naanak jih mani soi ||1||

Coming and going in reincarnation is ended, O Nanak, for those whose minds are filled with the Lord. ||1||

This soul has lived in many wombs.

ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਮੀਠ ਜੋਨਿ ਫਾਸੇ ॥

मोह मगन मीठ जोनि फासे ॥

Moh magan meeth joni phaase ||

Enticed by sweet attachment, it has been trapped in reincarnation.

ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੇ ॥

इनि माइआ त्रै गुण बसि कीने ॥

Ini maaiaa trai gu(nn) basi keene ||

This Maya has subjugated beings through the three qualities.

ਆਪਨ ਮੋਹ ਘਟੇ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਨੇ ॥

आपन मोह घटे घटि दीने ॥

Aapan moh ghate ghati deene ||

Maya has infused attachment to itself in each and every heart.

ਏ ਸਾਜਨ ਕਛੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥

ए साजन कछु कहहु उपाइआ ॥

E saajan kachhu kahahu upaaiaa ||

O friend, tell me some way,

ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤਰਉ ਬਿਖਮ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

जा ते तरउ बिखम इह माइआ ॥

Jaa te tarau bikham ih maaiaa ||

By which I may swim across this treacherous ocean of Maya.

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

करि किरपा सतसंगि मिलाए ॥

Kari kirapaa satasanggi milaae ||

The Lord showers His Mercy, and leads us to join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਮਾਏ ॥੭॥

नानक ता कै निकटि न माए ॥७॥

Naanak taa kai nikati na maae ||7||

O Nanak, Maya does not even come near. ||7||

Kirat kamaavan subh asubh keene tini prbhi aapi ||

God Himself causes one to perform good and bad actions.

ਪਸੁ ਆਪਨ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਹਾ ਕਮਾਤਿ ॥੧॥

पसु आपन हउ हउ करै नानक बिनु हरि कहा कमाति ॥१॥

Pasu aapan hau hau karai naanak binu hari kahaa kamaati ||1||

The beast indulges in egotism, selfishness and conceit; O Nanak, without the Lord, what can anyone do? ||1||

The One Lord Himself is the Cause of all actions.

ਆਪਹਿ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥

आपहि पाप पुंन बिसथारा ॥

Aapahi paap punn bisathaaraa ||

He Himself distributes sins and noble acts.

ਇਆ ਜੁਗ ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਆਪਹਿ ਲਾਇਓ ॥

इआ जुग जितु जितु आपहि लाइओ ॥

Iaa jug jitu jitu aapahi laaio ||

In this age, people are attached as the Lord attaches them.

ਸੋ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਓ ਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਇਓ ॥

सो सो पाइओ जु आपि दिवाइओ ॥

So so paaio ju aapi divaaio ||

They receive that which the Lord Himself gives.

ਉਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਕੋਊ ॥

उआ का अंतु न जानै कोऊ ॥

Uaa kaa anttu na jaanai kou ||

No one knows His limits.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਸੋਊ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਊ ॥

जो जो करै सोऊ फुनि होऊ ॥

Jo jo karai sou phuni hou ||

Whatever He does, comes to pass.

ਏਕਹਿ ਤੇ ਸਗਲਾ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥

एकहि ते सगला बिसथारा ॥

Ekahi te sagalaa bisathaaraa ||

From the One, the entire expanse of the Universe emanated.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰਨਹਾਰਾ ॥੮॥

नानक आपि सवारनहारा ॥८॥

Naanak aapi savaaranahaaraa ||8||

O Nanak, He Himself is our Saving Grace. ||8||

Raachi rahe banitaa binod kusam rangg bikh sor ||

Man remains engrossed in women and playful pleasures; the tumult of his passion is like the dye of the safflower, which fades away all too soon.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਸਰਨੀ ਪਰਉ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਮੋਰ ॥੧॥

नानक तिह सरनी परउ बिनसि जाइ मै मोर ॥१॥

Naanak tih saranee parau binasi jaai mai mor ||1||

O Nanak, seek God's Sanctuary, and your selfishness and conceit shall be taken away. ||1||

Re man binu hari jah rachahu tah tah banddhan paahi ||

O mind: without the Lord, whatever you are involved in shall bind you in chains.

ਜਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਤਹੂ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਸਾਕਤ ਤੇਊ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

जिह बिधि कतहू न छूटीऐ साकत तेऊ कमाहि ॥

Jih bidhi katahoo na chhooteeai saakat teu kamaahi ||

The faithless cynic does those deeds which will never allow him to be emancipated.

ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਰਤ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰ ॥

हउ हउ करते करम रत ता को भारु अफार ॥

Hau hau karate karam rat taa ko bhaaru aphaar ||

Acting in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the lovers of rituals carry the unbearable load.

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਉ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਤਉ ਏਊ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

प्रीति नही जउ नाम सिउ तउ एऊ करम बिकार ॥

Preeti nahee jau naam siu tau eu karam bikaar ||

When there is no love for the Naam, then these rituals are corrupt.

ਬਾਧੇ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਮੀਠੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ॥

बाधे जम की जेवरी मीठी माइआ रंग ॥

Baadhe jam kee jevaree meethee maaiaa rangg ||

The rope of death binds those who are in love with the sweet taste of Maya.

ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੇ ਮੋਹੇ ਨਹ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਦਹੂ ਸੰਗ ॥

भ्रम के मोहे नह बुझहि सो प्रभु सदहू संग ॥

Bhrm ke mohe nah bujhahi so prbhu sadahoo sangg ||

Deluded by doubt, they do not understand that God is always with them.

ਲੇਖੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਕਾਚੀ ਭੀਤਿ ਨ ਸੁਧਿ ॥

लेखै गणत न छूटीऐ काची भीति न सुधि ॥

Lekhai ga(nn)at na chhooteeai kaachee bheeti na sudhi ||

When their accounts are called for, they shall not be released; their wall of mud cannot be washed clean.

ਜਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਤਿਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਬੁਧਿ ॥੯॥

जिसहि बुझाए नानका तिह गुरमुखि निरमल बुधि ॥९॥

Jisahi bujhaae naanakaa tih guramukhi niramal budhi ||9||

One who is made to understand - O Nanak, that Gurmukh obtains immaculate understanding. ||9||

ਟੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਜਾਸੁ ਕੇ ਹੋਆ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ ॥

टूटे बंधन जासु के होआ साधू संगु ॥

Toote banddhan jaasu ke hoaa saadhoo sanggu ||

One whose bonds are cut away joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਰੰਗ ਏਕ ਕੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੂੜਾ ਰੰਗੁ ॥੧॥

जो राते रंग एक कै नानक गूड़ा रंगु ॥१॥

Jo raate rangg ek kai naanak goo(rr)aa ranggu ||1||

Those who are imbued with the Love of the One Lord, O Nanak, take on the deep and lasting color of His Love. ||1||

ਰਾਰਾ ਰੰਗਹੁ ਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥

RARRA: Dye this heart of yours in the color of the Lord's Love.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਰਸਨਾ ॥

हरि हरि नामु जपहु जपु रसना ॥

Hari hari naamu japahu japu rasanaa ||

Meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har - chant it with your tongue.

ਰੇ ਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥

रे रे दरगह कहै न कोऊ ॥

Re re daragah kahai na kou ||

In the Court of the Lord, no one shall speak harshly to you.

ਆਉ ਬੈਠੁ ਆਦਰੁ ਸੁਭ ਦੇਊ ॥

आउ बैठु आदरु सुभ देऊ ॥

Aau baithu aadaru subh deu ||

Everyone shall welcome you, saying, ""Come, and sit down.""

ਉਆ ਮਹਲੀ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਤੂ ਬਾਸਾ ॥

उआ महली पावहि तू बासा ॥

Uaa mahalee paavahi too baasaa ||

In that Mansion of the Lord's Presence, you shall find a home.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਨਹ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥

जनम मरन नह होइ बिनासा ॥

Janam maran nah hoi binaasaa ||

There is no birth or death, or destruction there.

ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਧੁਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੈ ॥

मसतकि करमु लिखिओ धुरि जा कै ॥

Masataki karamu likhio dhuri jaa kai ||

One who has such karma written on his forehead,

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਘਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥੧੦॥

हरि स्मपै नानक घरि ता कै ॥१०॥

Hari samppai naanak ghari taa kai ||10||

O Nanak, has the wealth of the Lord in his home. ||10||

ਲਾਲਚ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਬਿਆਪਤ ਮੂੜੇ ਅੰਧ ॥

Laalach jhooth bikaar moh biaapat moo(rr)e anddh ||

Greed, falsehood, corruption and emotional attachment entangle the blind and the foolish.

ਲਾਗਿ ਪਰੇ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੰਧ ॥੧॥

लागि परे दुरगंध सिउ नानक माइआ बंध ॥१॥

Laagi pare duraganddh siu naanak maaiaa banddh ||1||

Bound down by Maya, O Nanak, a foul odor clings to them. ||1||

ਲਲਾ ਲਪਟਿ ਬਿਖੈ ਰਸ ਰਾਤੇ ॥

लला लपटि बिखै रस राते ॥

LALLA: People are entangled in the love of corrupt pleasures;

ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਾਤੇ ॥

अह्मबुधि माइआ मद माते ॥

Ahambbudhi maaiaa mad maate ||

They are drunk with the wine of egotistical intellect and Maya.

ਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮਰਨਾ ॥

इआ माइआ महि जनमहि मरना ॥

Iaa maaiaa mahi janamahi maranaa ||

In this Maya, they are born and die.

ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਕਰਨਾ ॥

जिउ जिउ हुकमु तिवै तिउ करना ॥

Jiu jiu hukamu tivai tiu karanaa ||

People act according to the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

ਕੋਊ ਊਨ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

कोऊ ऊन न कोऊ पूरा ॥

Kou un na kou pooraa ||

No one is perfect, and no one is imperfect.

ਕੋਊ ਸੁਘਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਊ ਮੂਰਾ ॥

कोऊ सुघरु न कोऊ मूरा ॥

Kou sugharu na kou mooraa ||

No one is wise, and no one is foolish.

ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਨਾ ॥

जितु जितु लावहु तितु तितु लगना ॥

Jitu jitu laavahu titu titu laganaa ||

Wherever the Lord engages someone, there he is engaged.

ਨਾਨਕ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਦਾ ਅਲਿਪਨਾ ॥੧੧॥

नानक ठाकुर सदा अलिपना ॥११॥

Naanak thaakur sadaa alipanaa ||11||

O Nanak, our Lord and Master is forever detached. ||11||

Laal gupaal gobindd prbh gahir gambbheer athaah ||

My Beloved God, the Sustainer of the World, the Lord of the Universe, is deep, profound and unfathomable.

ਦੂਸਰ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਵਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ॥੧॥

दूसर नाही अवर को नानक बेपरवाह ॥१॥

Doosar naahee avar ko naanak beparavaah ||1||

There is no other like Him; O Nanak, He is not worried. ||1||

ਲਲਾ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਲਵੈ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥

ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਵਰ ਨਹ ਹੋਊ ॥

एकहि आपि अवर नह होऊ ॥

Ekahi aapi avar nah hou ||

He Himself is the One; there shall never be any other.

ਹੋਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਹੋਤ ਸਦ ਆਇਆ ॥

होवनहारु होत सद आइआ ॥

Hovanahaaru hot sad aaiaa ||

He is now, He has been, and He shall always be.

ਉਆ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

उआ का अंतु न काहू पाइआ ॥

Uaa kaa anttu na kaahoo paaiaa ||

No one has ever found His limit.

ਕੀਟ ਹਸਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੂਰ ਸਮਾਨੇ ॥

कीट हसति महि पूर समाने ॥

Keet hasati mahi poor samaane ||

In the ant and in the elephant, He is totally pervading.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਭ ਠਾਊ ਜਾਨੇ ॥

प्रगट पुरख सभ ठाऊ जाने ॥

Prgat purakh sabh thaau jaane ||

The Lord, the Primal Being, is known by everyone everywhere.

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅਪਨਾ ॥

जा कउ दीनो हरि रसु अपना ॥

Jaa kau deeno hari rasu apanaa ||

That one, unto whom the Lord has given His Love

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਹ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੧੨॥

नानक गुरमुखि हरि हरि तिह जपना ॥१२॥

Naanak guramukhi hari hari tih japanaa ||12||

- O Nanak, that Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||12||

ਆਤਮ ਰਸੁ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਣੁ ॥

आतम रसु जिह जानिआ हरि रंग सहजे माणु ॥

Aatam rasu jih jaaniaa hari rangg sahaje maa(nn)u ||

One who knows the taste of the Lord's sublime essence, intuitively enjoys the Lord's Love.

ਨਾਨਕ ਧਨਿ ਧਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਜਨ ਆਏ ਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੧॥

नानक धनि धनि धंनि जन आए ते परवाणु ॥१॥

Naanak dhani dhani dhanni jan aae te paravaa(nn)u ||1||

O Nanak, blessed, blessed, blessed are the Lord's humble servants; how fortunate is their coming into the world! ||1||

ਆਇਆ ਸਫਲ ਤਾਹੂ ਕੋ ਗਨੀਐ ॥

आइआ सफल ताहू को गनीऐ ॥

How fruitful is the coming into the world, of those

ਜਾਸੁ ਰਸਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਭਨੀਐ ॥

जासु रसन हरि हरि जसु भनीऐ ॥

Jaasu rasan hari hari jasu bhaneeai ||

Whose tongues celebrate the Praises of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਆਇ ਬਸਹਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਕੈ ਸੰਗੇ ॥

आइ बसहि साधू कै संगे ॥

Aai basahi saadhoo kai sangge ||

They come and dwell with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy;

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਰੰਗੇ ॥

अनदिनु नामु धिआवहि रंगे ॥

Anadinu naamu dhiaavahi rangge ||

Night and day, they lovingly meditate on the Naam.

ਆਵਤ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਮਹਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥

आवत सो जनु नामहि राता ॥

Aavat so janu naamahi raataa ||

Blessed is the birth of those humble beings who are attuned to the Naam;

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥

जा कउ दइआ मइआ बिधाता ॥

Jaa kau daiaa maiaa bidhaataa ||

The Lord, the Architect of Destiny, bestows His Kind Mercy upon them.

ਏਕਹਿ ਆਵਨ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥

एकहि आवन फिरि जोनि न आइआ ॥

Ekahi aavan phiri joni na aaiaa ||

They are born only once - they shall not be reincarnated again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਦਰਸਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥

नानक हरि कै दरसि समाइआ ॥१३॥

Naanak hari kai darasi samaaiaa ||13||

O Nanak, they are absorbed into the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||13||

Shalok:

ਯਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

यासु जपत मनि होइ अनंदु बिनसै दूजा भाउ ॥

Yaasu japat mani hoi ananddu binasai doojaa bhaau ||

Chanting it, the mind is filled with bliss; love of duality is eliminated,

ਦੂਖ ਦਰਦ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੧॥

दूख दरद त्रिसना बुझै नानक नामि समाउ ॥१॥

Dookh darad trisanaa bujhai naanak naami samaau ||1||

and pain, distress and desires are quenched. O Nanak, immerse yourself in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

ਯਯਾ ਜਾਰਉ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਊ ॥

यया जारउ दुरमति दोऊ ॥

Yayaa jaarau duramati dou ||

YAYYA: Burn away duality and evil-mindedness.

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਊ ॥

तिसहि तिआगि सुख सहजे सोऊ ॥

Tisahi tiaagi sukh sahaje sou ||

Give them up, and sleep in intuitive peace and poise.

ਯਯਾ ਜਾਇ ਪਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਰਨਾ ॥

यया जाइ परहु संत सरना ॥

Yayaa jaai parahu santt saranaa ||

Yaya: Go, and seek the Sanctuary of the Saints;

ਜਿਹ ਆਸਰ ਇਆ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰਨਾ ॥

जिह आसर इआ भवजलु तरना ॥

Jih aasar iaa bhavajalu taranaa ||

With their help, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਯਯਾ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸੋਊ ॥

यया जनमि न आवै सोऊ ॥

Yayaa janami na aavai sou ||

Yaya: One does not have to take birth again.

ਏਕ ਨਾਮ ਲੇ ਮਨਹਿ ਪਰੋਊ ॥

एक नाम ले मनहि परोऊ ॥

Ek naam le manahi parou ||

who weaves the One Name into his heart.

ਯਯਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥

यया जनमु न हारीऐ गुर पूरे की टेक ॥

Yayaa janamu na haareeai gur poore kee tek ||

Yaya: This human life shall not be wasted, if you take the Support of the Perfect Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੀਅਰੈ ਏਕ ॥੧੪॥

नानक तिह सुखु पाइआ जा कै हीअरै एक ॥१४॥

Naanak tih sukhu paaiaa jaa kai heearai ek ||14||

O Nanak, one whose heart is filled with the One Lord finds peace. ||14||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਬਸਿ ਰਹੇ ਈਤ ਊਤ ਕੇ ਮੀਤ ॥

अंतरि मन तन बसि रहे ईत ऊत के मीत ॥

Anttari man tan basi rahe eet ut ke meet ||

The One who dwells deep within the mind and body is your friend here and hereafter.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਪੀਐ ਨੀਤ ॥੧॥

गुरि पूरै उपदेसिआ नानक जपीऐ नीत ॥१॥

Guri poorai upadesiaa naanak japeeai neet ||1||

The Perfect Guru has taught me, O Nanak, to chant His Name continually. ||1||

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋਇ ॥

अनदिनु सिमरहु तासु कउ जो अंति सहाई होइ ॥

Anadinu simarahu taasu kau jo antti sahaaee hoi ||

Night and day, meditate in remembrance on the One who will be your Help and Support in the end.

ਇਹ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ਛਿਅ ਛਾਡਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

इह बिखिआ दिन चारि छिअ छाडि चलिओ सभु कोइ ॥

Ih bikhiaa din chaari chhia chhaadi chalio sabhu koi ||

This poison shall last for only a few days; everyone must depart, and leave it behind.

ਕਾ ਕੋ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਧੀਆ ॥

का को मात पिता सुत धीआ ॥

Kaa ko maat pitaa sut dheeaa ||

Who is our mother, father, son and daughter?

ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਲੀਆ ॥

ग्रिह बनिता कछु संगि न लीआ ॥

Grih banitaa kachhu sanggi na leeaa ||

Household, wife, and other things shall not go along with you.

ਐਸੀ ਸੰਚਿ ਜੁ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

ऐसी संचि जु बिनसत नाही ॥

Aisee sancchi ju binasat naahee ||

So gather that wealth which shall never perish,

ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

पति सेती अपुनै घरि जाही ॥

Pati setee apunai ghari jaahee ||

So that you may go to your true home with honor.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

साधसंगि कलि कीरतनु गाइआ ॥

Saadhasanggi kali keeratanu gaaiaa ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, those who sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy

ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧੫॥

नानक ते ते बहुरि न आइआ ॥१५॥

Naanak te te bahuri na aaiaa ||15||

- O Nanak, they do not have to endure reincarnation again. ||15||

ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਕੁਲੀਨ ਚਤੁਰ ਮੁਖਿ ਙਿਆਨੀ ਧਨਵੰਤ ॥

अति सुंदर कुलीन चतुर मुखि ङिआनी धनवंत ॥

Ati sunddar kuleen chatur mukhi (ng)iaanee dhanavantt ||

He may be very handsome, born into a highly respected family, very wise, a famous spiritual teacher, prosperous and wealthy;

ਮਿਰਤਕ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੧॥

मिरतक कहीअहि नानका जिह प्रीति नही भगवंत ॥१॥

Miratak kaheeahi naanakaa jih preeti nahee bhagavantt ||1||

But even so, he is looked upon as a corpse, O Nanak, if he does not love the Lord God. ||1||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਙੰਙਾ ਖਟੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਇ ਙਿਆਤਾ ॥

ङंङा खटु सासत्र होइ ङिआता ॥

(Ng)an(ng)(ng)aa khatu saasatr hoi (ng)iaataa ||

NGANGA: He may be a scholar of the six Shaastras.

ਪੂਰਕੁ ਕੁੰਭਕ ਰੇਚਕ ਕਰਮਾਤਾ ॥

पूरकु कु्मभक रेचक करमाता ॥

Pooraku kumbbhak rechak karamaataa ||

He may practice inhaling, exhaling and holding the breath.

ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਤੀਰਥ ਇਸਨਾਨੀ ॥

ङिआन धिआन तीरथ इसनानी ॥

(Ng)iaan dhiaan teerath isanaanee ||

He may practice spiritual wisdom, meditation, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and ritual cleansing baths.

ਸੋਮਪਾਕ ਅਪਰਸ ਉਦਿਆਨੀ ॥

सोमपाक अपरस उदिआनी ॥

Somapaak aparas udiaanee ||

He may cook his own food, and never touch anyone else's; he may live in the wilderness like a hermit.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹੇਤਾ ॥

राम नाम संगि मनि नही हेता ॥

Raam naam sanggi mani nahee hetaa ||

But if he does not enshrine love for the Lord's Name within his heart,

ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਸੋਊ ਅਨੇਤਾ ॥

जो कछु कीनो सोऊ अनेता ॥

Jo kachhu keeno sou anetaa ||

Then everything he does is transitory.

ਉਆ ਤੇ ਊਤਮੁ ਗਨਉ ਚੰਡਾਲਾ ॥

उआ ते ऊतमु गनउ चंडाला ॥

Uaa te utamu ganau chanddaalaa ||

Even an untouchable pariah is superior to him,

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਮਨਿ ਬਸਹਿ ਗੁਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੬॥

नानक जिह मनि बसहि गुपाला ॥१६॥

Naanak jih mani basahi gupaalaa ||16||

O Nanak, if the Lord of the World abides in his mind. ||16||

ਕੁੰਟ ਚਾਰਿ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕੀ ਰੇਖ ॥

कुंट चारि दह दिसि भ्रमे करम किरति की रेख ॥

Kuntt chaari dah disi bhrme karam kirati kee rekh ||

He wanders around in the four quarters and in the ten directions, according to the dictates of his karma.

ਸੂਖ ਦੂਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਲੇਖ ॥੧॥

सूख दूख मुकति जोनि नानक लिखिओ लेख ॥१॥

Sookh dookh mukati joni naanak likhio lekh ||1||

Pleasure and pain, liberation and reincarnation, O Nanak, come according to one's pre-ordained destiny. ||1||


ਪਵੜੀ ॥

पवड़ी ॥

Pauree:

ਕਕਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਊ ॥

कका कारन करता सोऊ ॥

Kakaa kaaran karataa sou ||

KAKKA: He is the Creator, the Cause of causes.

ਲਿਖਿਓ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਤ ਕੋਊ ॥

लिखिओ लेखु न मेटत कोऊ ॥

Likhio lekhu na metat kou ||

No one can erase His pre-ordained plan.

ਨਹੀ ਹੋਤ ਕਛੁ ਦੋਊ ਬਾਰਾ ॥

नही होत कछु दोऊ बारा ॥

Nahee hot kachhu dou baaraa ||

Nothing can be done a second time.

ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰੁ ਨ ਭੂਲਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

करनैहारु न भूलनहारा ॥

Karanaihaaru na bhoolanahaaraa ||

The Creator Lord does not make mistakes.

ਕਾਹੂ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਿਖਾਰੈ ਆਪੈ ॥

काहू पंथु दिखारै आपै ॥

Kaahoo pantthu dikhaarai aapai ||

To some, He Himself shows the Way.

ਕਾਹੂ ਉਦਿਆਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਪਛੁਤਾਪੈ ॥

काहू उदिआन भ्रमत पछुतापै ॥

Kaahoo udiaan bhrmat pachhutaapai ||

While He causes others to wander miserably in the wilderness.

ਆਪਨ ਖੇਲੁ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕੀਨੋ ॥

आपन खेलु आप ही कीनो ॥

Aapan khelu aap hee keeno ||

He Himself has set His own play in motion.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਦੀਨੋ ਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੧੭॥

जो जो दीनो सु नानक लीनो ॥१७॥

Jo jo deeno su naanak leeno ||17||

Whatever He gives, O Nanak, that is what we receive. ||17||

ਖਾਤ ਖਰਚਤ ਬਿਲਛਤ ਰਹੇ ਟੂਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

खात खरचत बिलछत रहे टूटि न जाहि भंडार ॥

Khaat kharachat bilachhat rahe tooti na jaahi bhanddaar ||

People continue to eat and consume and enjoy, but the Lord's warehouses are never exhausted.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਹਿ ਸੁਮਾਰ ॥੧॥

हरि हरि जपत अनेक जन नानक नाहि सुमार ॥१॥

Hari hari japat anek jan naanak naahi sumaar ||1||

So many chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; O Nanak, they cannot be counted. ||1||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਖਖਾ ਖੂਨਾ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਕੈ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

खखा खूना कछु नही तिसु सम्रथ कै पाहि ॥

Khakhaa khoonaa kachhu nahee tisu sammrth kai paahi ||

KHAKHA: The All-powerful Lord lacks nothing;

ਜੋ ਦੇਨਾ ਸੋ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਓ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਜਾਹਿ ॥

जो देना सो दे रहिओ भावै तह तह जाहि ॥

Jo denaa so de rahio bhaavai tah tah jaahi ||

Whatever He is to give, He continues to give - let anyone go anywhere he pleases.

ਖਰਚੁ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਇਆ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

खरचु खजाना नाम धनु इआ भगतन की रासि ॥

Kharachu khajaanaa naam dhanu iaa bhagatan kee raasi ||

The wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a treasure to spend; it is the capital of His devotees.

ਖਿਮਾ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਅਨਦ ਸਹਜ ਜਪਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸ ॥

खिमा गरीबी अनद सहज जपत रहहि गुणतास ॥

Khimaa gareebee anad sahaj japat rahahi gu(nn)ataas ||

With tolerance, humility, bliss and intuitive poise, they continue to meditate on the Lord, the Treasure of excellence.

ਖੇਲਹਿ ਬਿਗਸਹਿ ਅਨਦ ਸਿਉ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥

खेलहि बिगसहि अनद सिउ जा कउ होत क्रिपाल ॥

Khelahi bigasahi anad siu jaa kau hot kripaal ||

Those, unto whom the Lord shows His Mercy, play happily and blossom forth.

ਸਦੀਵ ਗਨੀਵ ਸੁਹਾਵਨੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮਾਲ ॥

सदीव गनीव सुहावने राम नाम ग्रिहि माल ॥

Sadeev ganeev suhaavane raam naam grihi maal ||

Those who have the wealth of the Lord's Name in their homes are forever wealthy and beautiful.

ਖੇਦੁ ਨ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਡਾਨੁ ਤਿਹ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੀ ॥

खेदु न दूखु न डानु तिह जा कउ नदरि करी ॥

Khedu na dookhu na daanu tih jaa kau nadari karee ||

Those who are blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace suffer neither torture, nor pain, nor punishment.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਣਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਿਨਾ ਪਰੀ ॥੧੮॥

नानक जो प्रभ भाणिआ पूरी तिना परी ॥१८॥

Naanak jo prbh bhaa(nn)iaa pooree tinaa paree ||18||

O Nanak, those who are pleasing to God become perfectly successful. ||18||

ਗਨਿ ਮਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਚਲਨੋ ਲੋਗ ॥

गनि मिनि देखहु मनै माहि सरपर चलनो लोग ॥

Gani mini dekhahu manai maahi sarapar chalano log ||

See, that even by calculating and scheming in their minds, people must surely depart in the end.

ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਟੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਅਰੋਗ ॥੧॥

आस अनित गुरमुखि मिटै नानक नाम अरोग ॥१॥

Aas anit guramukhi mitai naanak naam arog ||1||

Hopes and desires for transitory things are erased for the Gurmukh; O Nanak, the Name alone brings true health. ||1||

ਗਗਾ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹੁ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਜਪਿ ਨੀਤ ॥

Gagaa gobid gu(nn) ravahu saasi saasi japi neet ||

GAGGA: Chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe with each and every breath; meditate on Him forever.

ਕਹਾ ਬਿਸਾਸਾ ਦੇਹ ਕਾ ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੋ ਮੀਤ ॥

कहा बिसासा देह का बिलम न करिहो मीत ॥

Kahaa bisaasaa deh kaa bilam na kariho meet ||

How can you rely on the body? Do not delay, my friend;

ਨਹ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਨਹ ਜੋਬਨੈ ਨਹ ਬਿਰਧੀ ਕਛੁ ਬੰਧੁ ॥

नह बारिक नह जोबनै नह बिरधी कछु बंधु ॥

Nah baarik nah jobanai nah biradhee kachhu banddhu ||

There is nothing to stand in Death's way - neither in childhood, nor in youth, nor in old age.

ਓਹ ਬੇਰਾ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਜਉ ਆਇ ਪਰੈ ਜਮ ਫੰਧੁ ॥

ओह बेरा नह बूझीऐ जउ आइ परै जम फंधु ॥

Oh beraa nah boojheeai jau aai parai jam phanddhu ||

That time is not known, when the noose of Death shall come and fall on you.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਚਤੁਰ ਪੇਖਿ ਰਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਇਹ ਠਾਇ ॥

गिआनी धिआनी चतुर पेखि रहनु नही इह ठाइ ॥

Giaanee dhiaanee chatur pekhi rahanu nahee ih thaai ||

See, that even spiritual scholars, those who meditate, and those who are clever shall not stay in this place.

ਛਾਡਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਗਈ ਮੂੜ ਤਹਾ ਲਪਟਾਹਿ ॥

छाडि छाडि सगली गई मूड़ तहा लपटाहि ॥

Chhaadi chhaadi sagalee gaee moo(rr) tahaa lapataahi ||

Only the fool clings to that, which everyone else has abandoned and left behind.

ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਰਹੈ ਜਾਹੂ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗ ॥

गुर प्रसादि सिमरत रहै जाहू मसतकि भाग ॥

Gur prsaadi simarat rahai jaahoo masataki bhaag ||

By Guru's Grace, one who has such good destiny written on his forehead remembers the Lord in meditation.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਏ ਸਫਲ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਿਅਹਿ ਸੁਹਾਗ ॥੧੯॥

नानक आए सफल ते जा कउ प्रिअहि सुहाग ॥१९॥

Naanak aae saphal te jaa kau priahi suhaag ||19||

O Nanak, blessed and fruitful is the coming of those who obtain the Beloved Lord as their Husband. ||19||

ਘੋਖੇ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਸਭ ਆਨ ਨ ਕਥਤਉ ਕੋਇ ॥

घोखे सासत्र बेद सभ आन न कथतउ कोइ ॥

Ghokhe saasatr bed sabh aan na kathatau koi ||

I have searched all the Shaastras and the Vedas, and they say nothing except this:

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਹੁਣਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

आदि जुगादी हुणि होवत नानक एकै सोइ ॥१॥

Aadi jugaadee hu(nn)i hovat naanak ekai soi ||1||

"In the beginning, throughout the ages, now and forevermore, O Nanak, the One Lord alone exists." ||1||

Ghaghaa ghaalahu manahi eh binu hari doosar naahi ||

GHAGHA: Put this into your mind, that there is no one except the Lord.

ਨਹ ਹੋਆ ਨਹ ਹੋਵਨਾ ਜਤ ਕਤ ਓਹੀ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

नह होआ नह होवना जत कत ओही समाहि ॥

Nah hoaa nah hovanaa jat kat ohee samaahi ||

There never was, and there never shall be. He is pervading everywhere.

ਘੂਲਹਿ ਤਉ ਮਨ ਜਉ ਆਵਹਿ ਸਰਨਾ ॥

घूलहि तउ मन जउ आवहि सरना ॥

Ghoolahi tau man jau aavahi saranaa ||

You shall be absorbed into Him, O mind, if you come to His Sanctuary.

ਨਾਮ ਤਤੁ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਨਹਚਰਨਾ ॥

नाम ततु कलि महि पुनहचरना ॥

Naam tatu kali mahi punahacharanaa ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, shall be of any real use to you.

ਘਾਲਿ ਘਾਲਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਹਿ ॥

घालि घालि अनिक पछुतावहि ॥

Ghaali ghaali anik pachhutaavahi ||

So many work and slave continually, but they come to regret and repent in the end.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਥਿਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

बिनु हरि भगति कहा थिति पावहि ॥

Binu hari bhagati kahaa thiti paavahi ||

Without devotional worship of the Lord, how can they find stability?

ਘੋਲਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਿਹ ਪੀਆ ॥

घोलि महा रसु अम्रितु तिह पीआ ॥

Gholi mahaa rasu ammmritu tih peeaa ||

They alone taste the supreme essence, and drink in the Ambrosial Nectar,

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਆ ॥੨੦॥

नानक हरि गुरि जा कउ दीआ ॥२०॥

Naanak hari guri jaa kau deeaa ||20||

O Nanak, unto whom the Lord, the Guru, gives it. ||20||

ਙਣਿ ਘਾਲੇ ਸਭ ਦਿਵਸ ਸਾਸ ਨਹ ਬਢਨ ਘਟਨ ਤਿਲੁ ਸਾਰ ॥

ङणि घाले सभ दिवस सास नह बढन घटन तिलु सार ॥

(Ng)a(nn)i ghaale sabh divas saas nah badhan ghatan tilu saar ||

He has counted all the days and the breaths, and placed them in people's destiny; they do not increase or decrease one little bit.

ਜੀਵਨ ਲੋਰਹਿ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਊ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੧॥

जीवन लोरहि भरम मोह नानक तेऊ गवार ॥१॥

Jeevan lorahi bharam moh naanak teu gavaar ||1||

Those who long to live in doubt and emotional attachment, O Nanak, are total fools. ||1||

ङंङा ङ्रासै कालु तिह जो साकत प्रभि कीन ॥

(Ng)an(ng)(ng)aa (ng)raasai kaalu tih jo saakat prbhi keen ||

NGANGA: Death seizes those whom God has made into faithless cynics.

ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੀਨ ॥

अनिक जोनि जनमहि मरहि आतम रामु न चीन ॥

Anik joni janamahi marahi aatam raamu na cheen ||

They are born and they die, enduring countless incarnations; they do not realize the Lord, the Supreme Soul.

ਙਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਤਾਹੂ ਕਉ ਆਏ ॥

ङिआन धिआन ताहू कउ आए ॥

(Ng)iaan dhiaan taahoo kau aae ||

They alone find spiritual wisdom and meditation,

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਹ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਵਾਏ ॥

करि किरपा जिह आपि दिवाए ॥

Kari kirapaa jih aapi divaae ||

Whom the Lord blesses with His Mercy;

ਙਣਤੀ ਙਣੀ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਛੂਟੈ ॥

ङणती ङणी नही कोऊ छूटै ॥

(Ng)a(nn)atee (ng)a(nn)ee nahee kou chhootai ||

No one is emancipated by counting and calculating.

ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਫੂਟੈ ॥

काची गागरि सरपर फूटै ॥

Kaachee gaagari sarapar phootai ||

The vessel of clay shall surely break.

ਸੋ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਿਹ ਜੀਵਤ ਜਪਿਆ ॥

सो जीवत जिह जीवत जपिआ ॥

So jeevat jih jeevat japiaa ||

They alone live, who, while alive, meditate on the Lord.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਛਪਿਆ ॥੨੧॥

प्रगट भए नानक नह छपिआ ॥२१॥

Prgat bhae naanak nah chhapiaa ||21||

They are respected, O Nanak, and do not remain hidden. ||21||

Chiti chitavau chara(nn)aarabindd udh kaval bigasaant ||

Focus your consciousness on His Lotus Feet, and the inverted lotus of your heart shall blossom forth.

ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਆਪਹਿ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਮਤਾਂਤ ॥੧॥

प्रगट भए आपहि गोबिंद नानक संत मतांत ॥१॥

Prgat bhae aapahi gaobindd naanak santt mataant ||1||

The Lord of the Universe Himself becomes manifest, O Nanak, through the Teachings of the Saints. ||1||

CHACHA: When I became attached to the Lord's Lotus Feet,

ਧਨਿ ਧਨਿ ਉਆ ਦਿਨ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥

धनि धनि उआ दिन संजोग सभागा ॥

Dhani dhani uaa din sanjjog sabhaagaa ||

blessed, blessed is that day.

ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਇਓ ॥

चारि कुंट दह दिसि भ्रमि आइओ ॥

Chaari kuntt dah disi bhrmi aaio ||

After wandering around in the four quarters and the ten directions,

ਭਈ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤਬ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਓ ॥

भई क्रिपा तब दरसनु पाइओ ॥

Bhaee kripaa tab darasanu paaio ||

God showed His Mercy to me, and then I obtained the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.

ਚਾਰ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਸਭ ਦੂਆ ॥

चार बिचार बिनसिओ सभ दूआ ॥

Chaar bichaar binasio sabh dooaa ||

By pure lifestyle and meditation, all duality is removed.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੂਆ ॥

साधसंगि मनु निरमल हूआ ॥

Saadhasanggi manu niramal hooaa ||

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the mind becomes immaculate.

ਚਿੰਤ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥

चिंत बिसारी एक द्रिसटेता ॥

Chintt bisaaree ek drisatetaa ||

Anxieties are forgotten, and the One Lord alone is seen,

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਜਿਹ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾ ॥੨੨॥

नानक गिआन अंजनु जिह नेत्रा ॥२२॥

Naanak giaan anjjanu jih netraa ||22||

O Nanak, by those whose eyes are anointed with the ointment of spiritual wisdom. ||22||

ਛਾਤੀ ਸੀਤਲ ਮਨੁ ਸੁਖੀ ਛੰਤ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥

Chhaatee seetal manu sukhee chhantt gobid gun gaai ||

The heart is cooled and soothed, and the mind is at peace, chanting and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.

ਐਸੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਇ ॥੧॥

ऐसी किरपा करहु प्रभ नानक दास दसाइ ॥१॥

Aisee kirapaa karahu prbh naanak daas dasaai ||1||

Show such Mercy, O God, that Nanak may become the slave of Your slaves. ||1||

ਛਛਾ ਛੋਹਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥

छछा छोहरे दास तुमारे ॥

CHHACHHA: I am Your child-slave.

ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਪਾਨੀਹਾਰੇ ॥

दास दासन के पानीहारे ॥

Daas daasan ke paaneehaare ||

I am the water-carrier of the slave of Your slaves.

ਛਛਾ ਛਾਰੁ ਹੋਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਸੰਤਾ ॥

छछा छारु होत तेरे संता ॥

Chhachhaa chhaaru hot tere santtaa ||

Chhachha: I long to become the dust under the feet of Your Saints.

ਅਪਨੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥

अपनी क्रिपा करहु भगवंता ॥

Apanee kripaa karahu bhagavanttaa ||

Please shower me with Your Mercy, O Lord God!

ਛਾਡਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਬਹੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

छाडि सिआनप बहु चतुराई ॥

Chhaadi siaanap bahu chaturaaee ||

I have given up my excessive cleverness and scheming,

ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਮਨ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕਾਈ ॥

संतन की मन टेक टिकाई ॥

Santtan kee man tek tikaaee ||

And I have taken the support of the Saints as my mind's support.

ਛਾਰੁ ਕੀ ਪੁਤਰੀ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

छारु की पुतरी परम गति पाई ॥

Chhaaru kee putaree param gati paaee ||

Even a puppet of ashes attains the supreme status,

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੨੩॥

नानक जा कउ संत सहाई ॥२३॥

Naanak jaa kau santt sahaaee ||23||

O Nanak, if it has the help and support of the Saints. ||23||

ਜੋਰ ਜੁਲਮ ਫੂਲਹਿ ਘਨੋ ਕਾਚੀ ਦੇਹ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥

जोर जुलम फूलहि घनो काची देह बिकार ॥

Jor julam phoolahi ghano kaachee deh bikaar ||

Practicing oppression and tyranny, he puffs himself up; he acts in corruption with his frail, perishable body.

ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਪਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਛੁਟਾਰ ॥੧॥

अह्मबुधि बंधन परे नानक नाम छुटार ॥१॥

Ahambbudhi banddhan pare naanak naam chhutaar ||1||

He is bound by his egotistical intellect; O Nanak, salvation comes only through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

ਜਜਾ ਜਾਨੈ ਹਉ ਕਛੁ ਹੂਆ ॥

जजा जानै हउ कछु हूआ ॥

Jajaa jaanai hau kachhu hooaa ||

JAJJA: When someone, in his ego, believes that he has become something,

ਬਾਧਿਓ ਜਿਉ ਨਲਿਨੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਸੂਆ ॥

बाधिओ जिउ नलिनी भ्रमि सूआ ॥

Baadhio jiu nalinee bhrmi sooaa ||

He is caught in his error, like a parrot in a trap.

ਜਉ ਜਾਨੈ ਹਉ ਭਗਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥

जउ जानै हउ भगतु गिआनी ॥

Jau jaanai hau bhagatu giaanee ||

When he believes, in his ego, that he is a devotee and a spiritual teacher,

ਆਗੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੀ ॥

आगै ठाकुरि तिलु नही मानी ॥

Aagai thaakuri tilu nahee maanee ||

Then, in the world hereafter, the Lord of the Universe shall have no regard for him at all.

ਜਉ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਥਨੀ ਕਰਤਾ ॥

जउ जानै मै कथनी करता ॥

Jau jaanai mai kathanee karataa ||

When he believes himself to be a preacher,

ਬਿਆਪਾਰੀ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਜਿਉ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥

बिआपारी बसुधा जिउ फिरता ॥

Biaapaaree basudhaa jiu phirataa ||

He is merely a peddler wandering over the earth.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

साधसंगि जिह हउमै मारी ॥

Saadhasanggi jih haumai maaree ||

But one who conquers his ego in the Company of the Holy,

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੇ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੨੪॥

नानक ता कउ मिले मुरारी ॥२४॥

Naanak taa kau mile muraaree ||24||

O Nanak, meets the Lord. ||24||

Jhaalaaghe uthi naamu japi nisi baasur aaraadhi ||

Rise early in the morning, and chant the Naam; worship and adore the Lord, night and day.

ਕਾਰ੍ਹਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਨ ਬਿਆਪਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਟੈ ਉਪਾਧਿ ॥੧॥

कार्हा तुझै न बिआपई नानक मिटै उपाधि ॥१॥

Kaarhaa tujhai na biaapaee naanak mitai upaadhi ||1||

Anxiety shall not afflict you, O Nanak, and your misfortune shall vanish. ||1||

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੋ ॥

राम नाम सिउ करि बिउहारो ॥

Raam naam siu kari biuhaaro ||

When you deal with the Lord's Name.

ਝੂਰਤ ਝੂਰਤ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂਆ ॥

झूरत झूरत साकत मूआ ॥

Jhoorat jhoorat saakat mooaa ||

The faithless cynic dies in sorrow and pain;

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਹੋਤ ਭਾਉ ਬੀਆ ॥

जा कै रिदै होत भाउ बीआ ॥

Jaa kai ridai hot bhaau beeaa ||

His heart is filled with the love of duality.

ਝਰਹਿ ਕਸੰਮਲ ਪਾਪ ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨੂਆ ॥

झरहि कसमल पाप तेरे मनूआ ॥

Jharahi kasammal paap tere manooaa ||

Your evil deeds and sins shall fall away, O my mind,

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਥਾ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਸੁਨੂਆ ॥

अम्रित कथा संतसंगि सुनूआ ॥

Ammmrit kathaa santtasanggi sunooaa ||

Listening to the ambrosial speech in the Society of the Saints.

ਝਰਹਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦ੍ਰੁਸਟਾਈ ॥

झरहि काम क्रोध द्रुसटाई ॥

Jharahi kaam krodh drusataaee ||

Sexual desire, anger and wickedness fall away,

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥੨੫॥

नानक जा कउ क्रिपा गुसाई ॥२५॥

Naanak jaa kau kripaa gusaaee ||25||

O Nanak, from those who are blessed by the Mercy of the Lord of the World. ||25||

ਞਤਨ ਕਰਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਅਨਿਕ ਬਿਧਿ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮੀਤ ॥

(Ny)atan karahu tum anik bidhi rahanu na paavahu meet ||

You can try all sorts of things, but you still cannot remain here, my friend.

ਜੀਵਤ ਰਹਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਜਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥

जीवत रहहु हरि हरि भजहु नानक नाम परीति ॥१॥

Jeevat rahahu hari hari bhajahu naanak naam pareeti ||1||

But you shall live forevermore, O Nanak, if you vibrate and love the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||


ਪਵੜੀ ॥

ਞੰਞਾ ਞਾਣਹੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਸਹੀ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਤ ਏਹ ਹੇਤ ॥

ञंञा ञाणहु द्रिड़ु सही बिनसि जात एह हेत ॥

(Ny)an(ny)aa (ny)aa(nn)ahu dri(rr)u sahee binasi jaat eh het ||

NYANYA: Know this as absolutely correct, that that this ordinary love shall come to an end.

ਗਣਤੀ ਗਣਉ ਨ ਗਣਿ ਸਕਉ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ਕੇਤ ॥

गणती गणउ न गणि सकउ ऊठि सिधारे केत ॥

Ga(nn)atee ga(nn)au na ga(nn)i sakau uthi sidhaare ket ||

You may count and calculate as much as you want, but you cannot count how many have arisen and departed.

ਞੋ ਪੇਖਉ ਸੋ ਬਿਨਸਤਉ ਕਾ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀਐ ਸੰਗੁ ॥

ञो पेखउ सो बिनसतउ का सिउ करीऐ संगु ॥

(Ny)o pekhau so binasatau kaa siu kareeai sanggu ||

Whoever I see shall perish. With whom should I associate?

ਞਾਣਹੁ ਇਆ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਹੀ ਚਿਤ ਝੂਠਉ ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗੁ ॥

ञाणहु इआ बिधि सही चित झूठउ माइआ रंगु ॥

(Ny)aa(nn)ahu iaa bidhi sahee chit jhoothau maaiaa ranggu ||

Know this as true in your consciousness, that the love of Maya is false.

ਞਾਣਤ ਸੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਸੁਇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਤੇ ਕੀਚਿਤ ਭਿੰਨ ॥

ञाणत सोई संतु सुइ भ्रम ते कीचित भिंन ॥

(Ny)aa(nn)at soee santtu sui bhrm te keechit bhinn ||

He alone knows, and he alone is a Saint, who is free of doubt.

ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਤਿਹ ਕਢਹੁ ਜਿਹ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥

अंध कूप ते तिह कढहु जिह होवहु सुप्रसंन ॥

Anddh koop te tih kadhahu jih hovahu suprsann ||

He is lifted up and out of the deep dark pit; the Lord is totally pleased with him.

ਞਾ ਕੈ ਹਾਥਿ ਸਮਰਥ ਤੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕਰਨੈ ਜੋਗ ॥

ञा कै हाथि समरथ ते कारन करनै जोग ॥

(Ny)aa kai haathi samarath te kaaran karanai jog ||

God's Hand is All-powerful; He is the Creator, the Cause of causes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਹ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਞਾਹੂ ਕੀਓ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥੨੬॥

नानक तिह उसतति करउ ञाहू कीओ संजोग ॥२६॥

Naanak tih usatati karau (ny)aahoo keeo sanjjog ||26||

O Nanak, praise the One, who joins us to Himself. ||26||

Shalok:

ਟੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੇਵ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

टूटे बंधन जनम मरन साध सेव सुखु पाइ ॥

Toote banddhan janam maran saadh sev sukhu paai ||

The bondage of birth and death is broken and peace is obtained, by serving the Holy.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਬੀਸਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक मनहु न बीसरै गुण निधि गोबिद राइ ॥१॥

Naanak manahu na beesarai gu(nn) nidhi gobid raai ||1||

O Nanak, may I never forget from my mind, the Treasure of Virtue, the Sovereign Lord of the Universe. ||1||

Pauree:

ਟਹਲ ਕਰਹੁ ਤਉ ਏਕ ਕੀ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

टहल करहु तउ एक की जा ते ब्रिथा न कोइ ॥

Tahal karahu tau ek kee jaa te brithaa na koi ||

Work for the One Lord; no one returns empty-handed from Him.

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਹੀਐ ਬਸੈ ਜੋ ਚਾਹਹੁ ਸੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

मनि तनि मुखि हीऐ बसै जो चाहहु सो होइ ॥

Mani tani mukhi heeai basai jo chaahahu so hoi ||

When the Lord abides within your mind, body, mouth and heart, then whatever you desire shall come to pass.

ਟਹਲ ਮਹਲ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਸਾਧ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥

टहल महल ता कउ मिलै जा कउ साध क्रिपाल ॥

Tahal mahal taa kau milai jaa kau saadh kripaal ||

He alone obtains the Lord's service, and the Mansion of His Presence, unto whom the Holy Saint is compassionate.

ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਤਉ ਬਸੈ ਜਉ ਆਪਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

साधू संगति तउ बसै जउ आपन होहि दइआल ॥

Saadhoo sanggati tau basai jau aapan hohi daiaal ||

He joins the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, only when the Lord Himself shows His Mercy.

ਟੋਹੇ ਟਾਹੇ ਬਹੁ ਭਵਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

टोहे टाहे बहु भवन बिनु नावै सुखु नाहि ॥

Tohe taahe bahu bhavan binu naavai sukhu naahi ||

I have searched and searched, across so many worlds, but without the Name, there is no peace.

ਟਲਹਿ ਜਾਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਤ ਤਿਹ ਜੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

टलहि जाम के दूत तिह जु साधू संगि समाहि ॥

Talahi jaam ke doot tih ju saadhoo sanggi samaahi ||

The Messenger of Death retreats from those who dwell in the Saadh Sangat.

ਬਾਰਿ ਬਾਰਿ ਜਾਉ ਸੰਤ ਸਦਕੇ ॥

बारि बारि जाउ संत सदके ॥

Baari baari jaau santt sadake ||

Again and again, I am forever devoted to the Saints.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਕਦਿ ਕੇ ॥੨੭॥

नानक पाप बिनासे कदि के ॥२७॥

Naanak paap binaase kadi ke ||27||

O Nanak, my sins from so long ago have been erased. ||27||

Shalok:

ਠਾਕ ਨ ਹੋਤੀ ਤਿਨਹੁ ਦਰਿ ਜਿਹ ਹੋਵਹੁ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥

ठाक न होती तिनहु दरि जिह होवहु सुप्रसंन ॥

Thaak na hotee tinahu dari jih hovahu suprsann ||

Those beings, with whom the Lord is thoroughly pleased, meet with no obstacles at His Door.

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਧਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ॥੧॥

जो जन प्रभि अपुने करे नानक ते धनि धंनि ॥१॥

Jo jan prbhi apune kare naanak te dhani dhanni ||1||

Those humble beings whom God has made His own, O Nanak, are blessed, so very blessed. ||1||


ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਠਠਾ ਮਨੂਆ ਠਾਹਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

ठठा मनूआ ठाहहि नाही ॥

Thathaa manooaa thaahahi naahee ||

T'HAT'HA: They do not make trouble for anyone's mind,

ਜੋ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਏਕਹਿ ਲਪਟਾਹੀ ॥

जो सगल तिआगि एकहि लपटाही ॥

Jo sagal tiaagi ekahi lapataahee ||

who have abandoned all else and who cling to the One Lord alone.

ਠਹਕਿ ਠਹਕਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਮੂਏ ॥

ठहकि ठहकि माइआ संगि मूए ॥

Thahaki thahaki maaiaa sanggi mooe ||

Those who are totally absorbed and preoccupied with Maya are dead;

ਉਆ ਕੈ ਕੁਸਲ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਹੂਏ ॥

उआ कै कुसल न कतहू हूए ॥

Uaa kai kusal na katahoo hooe ||

They do not find happiness anywhere.

ਠਾਂਢਿ ਪਰੀ ਸੰਤਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਸਿਆ ॥

ठांढि परी संतह संगि बसिआ ॥

Thaandhi paree santtah sanggi basiaa ||

One who dwells in the Society of the Saints finds a great peace;

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਹਾ ਜੀਅ ਰਸਿਆ ॥

अम्रित नामु तहा जीअ रसिआ ॥

Ammmrit naamu tahaa jeea rasiaa ||

The Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam becomes sweet to his soul.

ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

ठाकुर अपुने जो जनु भाइआ ॥

Thaakur apune jo janu bhaaiaa ||

That humble being, who is pleasing to his Lord and Master
