Niramal joti pasari rahee jotee joti milaaee ||5||

Anttaru seetalu saanti hoi naame sukhu hoee ||6||

A cooling and soothing peace comes within, and through the Naam, peace is obtained. ||6||

किलविख पाप सभ कटीअहि फिरि दुखु बिघनु न होई ॥७॥

Kilavikh paap sabh kateeahi phiri dukhu bighanu na hoee ||7||

All sins and vices are eradicated, and one shall never again suffer pain or distress. ||7||

इसु भगती नो सुरि नर मुनि जन लोचदे विणु सतिगुर पाई न जाइ ॥

Isu bhagatee no suri nar muni jan lochade vi(nn)u satigur paaee na jaai ||

The angels, humans and silent sages long for this devotional worship, but without the True Guru, it cannot be attained.

Panddit pa(rr)ade jotikee tin boojh na paai ||2||

The Pandits, the religious scholars, and the astrologers read their books, but they do not understand. ||2||

Aapai thai sabhu rakhionu kichhu kaha(nn)u na jaaee ||

He Himself keeps all in His Hand; nothing else can be said.

So who can we call bad, since there is no other? ||4||

The Command of the One Lord is pervading throughout; duty to the One Lord is upon the heads of all.

Aapi bhavaalee diteeanu anttari lobhu vikaaraa ||5||

He has sanctified those few Gurmukhs who understand Him, and reflect upon Him.

Bhagati bhee onaa no bakhaseeanu anttari bhanddaaraa ||6||

He grants devotional worship to them, and within them is the treasure. ||6||

Giaaneeaa no sabhu sachu hai sachu sojhee hoee ||

The spiritual teachers know nothing but the Truth; they obtain true understanding.

ओइ भुलाए किसै दे न भुलन्ही सचु जाणनि सोई ॥७॥

Oi bhulaae kisai de na bhulanhee sachu jaa(nn)ani soee ||7||

They are led astray by Him, but they do not go astray, because they know the True Lord. ||7||

Ghar mahi pancch varatade pancche veechaaree ||

Within the homes of their bodies, the five passions are pervading, but here, the five are well-behaved.

नानक बिनु सतिगुर वसि न आवन्ही नामि हउमै मारी ॥८॥५॥२७॥

Naanak binu satigur vasi na aavanhee naami haumai maaree ||8||5||27||

O Nanak, without the True Guru, they are not overcome; through the Naam, the ego is conquered. ||8||5||27||

Everything is within the home of your own self; there is nothing beyond it.

Gur parasaadee paaeeai anttari kapat khulaahee ||1||

By Guru's Grace, it is obtained, and the doors of the inner heart are opened wide. ||1||

Hari kaa gaahaku hovai so lae paae ratanu veechaaraa ||

One who is a buyer of the Lord's Name, finds it, and obtains the jewel of contemplation.

Anddaru kholai dib disati dekhai mukati bhanddaaraa ||2||

He opens the doors deep within, and through the Eyes of Divine Vision, beholds the treasure of liberation. ||2||

There are so many mansions within the body; the soul dwells within them.

Man chinddiaa phalu paaisee phiri hoi na pheraa ||3||

He obtains the fruits of his mind's desires, and he shall not have to go through reincarnation again. ||3||

Paarakheeaa vathu samaali laee gur sojhee hoee ||

The appraisers cherish the commodity of the Name; they obtain understanding from the Guru.

नामु पदारथु अमुलु सा गुरमुखि पावै कोई ॥४॥

Naamu padaarathu amulu saa guramukhi paavai koee ||4||

The wealth of the Naam is priceless; how few are the Gurmukhs who obtain it. ||4||

बाहरु भाले सु किआ लहै वथु घरै अंदरि भाई ॥

Baaharu bhaale su kiaa lahai vathu gharai anddari bhaaee ||

Searching outwardly, what can anyone find? The commodity is deep within the home of the self, O Siblings of Destiny.

Bharame bhoolaa sabhu jagu phirai manamukhi pati gavaaee ||5||

The entire world is wandering around, deluded by doubt; the self-willed manmukhs lose their honor. ||5||

Gharu daru chhode aapa(nn)aa par ghari jhoothaa jaaee ||

The false one leaves his own hearth and home, and goes out to another's home.

Chorai vaangoo paka(rr)eeai binu naavai chotaa khaaee ||6||

Like a thief, he is caught, and without the Naam, he is beaten and struck down. ||6||

Those who know their own home, are happy, O Siblings of Destiny.

Aape daanu kare kisu aakheeai aape dei bujhaaee ||

He Himself gives gifts, and He Himself bestows understanding; unto whom can we complain?

The Beloved Lord is the purest of the pure; He comes to dwell in the pure mind.

Naamu salaahe sadaa sadaa naame mahalu paaee ||4||

They praise the Naam, forever and ever, and through the Naam, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||4||

Through the Naam, peace wells up; I seek the Sanctuary of the Naam. ||5||

Jam puri baadhe maareeahi birathaa janamu gavaaee ||6||

In the City of Death, they are tied down and beaten, and they lose their lives in vain. ||6||

Jis no devai tisu milai guramatee naamu bujhaaee ||

O Nanak, everything is under the influence of the Naam; by perfect good destiny, a few obtain it. ||8||7||29||

Dohaaga(nn)ee mahalu na paainhee na jaa(nn)ani pir kaa suaau ||

The deserted brides do not obtain the Mansion of their Husband's Presence, nor do they know His taste.

Phikaa bolahi naa nivahi doojaa bhaau suaau ||1||

They speak harsh words, and do not bow to Him; they are in love with another. ||1||

Sohaaga(nn)ee aapi savaareeonu laai prem piaaru ||

He Himself adorns the happy soul-brides; they bear Him love and affection.

Satigur kai bhaa(nn)ai chaladeeaa naame sahaji seegaaru ||2||

They live in harmony with the Sweet Will of the True Guru, naturally adorned with the Naam. ||2||

Sadaa raavahi piru aapa(nn)aa sachee sej subhaai ||

They enjoy their Beloved forever, and their bed is decorated with Truth.

पिर कै प्रेमि मोहीआ मिलि प्रीतम सुखु पाइ ॥३॥

Pir kai premi moheeaa mili preetam sukhu paai ||3||

They are fascinated with the Love of their Husband Lord; meeting their Beloved, they obtain peace. ||3||

Giaan apaaru seegaaru hai sobhaavanttee naari ||

Spiritual wisdom is the incomparable decoration of the happy soul-bride.

Saa sabharaaee sunddaree pir kai heti piaari ||4||

She is so beautiful - she is the queen of all; she enjoys the love and affection of her Husband Lord. ||4||

Sohaaga(nn)ee vichi ranggu rakhionu sachai alakhi apaari ||

The True Lord, the Unseen, the Infinite, has infused His Love among the happy soul-brides.

Sohaaga(nn)ee seegaaru ba(nn)aaiaa gu(nn) kaa gali haaru ||

The happy soul-bride has adorned herself with the necklace of virtue.

प्रेम पिरमलु तनि लावणा अंतरि रतनु वीचारु ॥६॥

Prem piramalu tani laava(nn)aa anttari ratanu veechaaru ||6||

She applies the perfume of love to her body, and within her mind is the jewel of reflective meditation. ||6||

ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਊਤਮਾ ਜਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਹੋਇ ॥

Bhagati rate se utamaa jati pati sabade hoi ||

Those who are imbued with devotional worship are the most exalted. Their social standing and honor come from the Word of the Shabad.

बिनु नावै सभ नीच जाति है बिसटा का कीड़ा होइ ॥७॥

Binu naavai sabh neech jaati hai bisataa kaa kee(rr)aa hoi ||7||

Without the Naam, all are low class, like maggots in manure. ||7||

हउ हउ करदी सभ फिरै बिनु सबदै हउ न जाइ ॥

Hau hau karadee sabh phirai binu sabadai hau na jaai ||

Everyone proclaims, ""Me, me!""; but without the Shabad, the ego does not depart.

नानक नामि रते तिन हउमै गई सचै रहे समाइ ॥८॥८॥३०॥

Naanak naami rate tin haumai gaee sachai rahe samaai ||8||8||30||

O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam lose their ego; they remain absorbed in the True Lord. ||8||8||30||

सचे रते से निरमले सदा सची सोइ ॥

Sache rate se niramale sadaa sachee soi ||

Those who are imbued with the True Lord are spotless and pure; their reputation is forever true.

ऐथै घरि घरि जापदे आगै जुगि जुगि परगटु होइ ॥१॥

Aithai ghari ghari jaapade aagai jugi jugi paragatu hoi ||1||

Here, they are known in each and every home, and hereafter, they are famous throughout the ages. ||1||

E man roo(rr)he ranggule toonn sachaa ranggu cha(rr)aai ||

O beauteous and joyful mind, imbue yourself with your true color.

रूड़ी बाणी जे रपै ना इहु रंगु लहै न जाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Roo(rr)ee baa(nn)ee je rapai naa ihu ranggu lahai na jaai ||1|| rahaau ||

If you imbue yourself with the Beauteous Word of the Guru's Bani, then this color shall never fade away. ||1|| Pause ||

हम नीच मैले अति अभिमानी दूजै भाइ विकार ॥

Ham neech maile ati abhimaanee doojai bhaai vikaar ||

I am lowly, filthy, and totally egotistical; I am attached to the corruption of duality.

गुरि पारसि मिलिऐ कंचनु होए निरमल जोति अपार ॥२॥

Guri paarasi miliai kancchanu hoe niramal joti apaar ||2||

But meeting with the Guru, the Philosopher's Stone, I am transformed into gold; I am blended with the Pure Light of the Infinite Lord. ||2||

बिनु गुर कोइ न रंगीऐ गुरि मिलिऐ रंगु चड़ाउ ॥

Binu gur koi na ranggeeai guri miliai ranggu cha(rr)aau ||

Without the Guru, no one is imbued with the color of the Lord's Love; meeting with the Guru, this color is applied.

Gur kai bhai bhaai jo rate siphatee sachi samaau ||3||

Those who are imbued with the Fear, and the Love of the Guru, are absorbed in the Praise of the True Lord. ||3||

भै बिनु लागि न लगई ना मनु निरमलु होइ ॥

Bhai binu laagi na lagaee naa manu niramalu hoi ||

Without fear, the cloth is not dyed, and the mind is not rendered pure.

Binu bhai karam kamaava(nn)e jhoothe thaau na koi ||4||

Without fear, the performance of rituals is false, and one finds no place of rest. ||4||

जिस नो आपे रंगे सु रपसी सतसंगति मिलाइ ॥

Jis no aape rangge su rapasee satasanggati milaai ||

Only those whom the Lord imbues, are so imbued; they join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

पूरे गुर ते सतसंगति ऊपजै सहजे सचि सुभाइ ॥५॥

Poore gur te satasanggati upajai sahaje sachi subhaai ||5||

From the Perfect Guru, the Sat Sangat emanates, and one easily merges into the Love of the True One. ||5||

बिनु संगती सभि ऐसे रहहि जैसे पसु ढोर ॥

Binu sanggatee sabhi aise rahahi jaise pasu dhor ||

Without the Sangat, the Company of the Holy, all remain like beasts and animals.

जिन्हि कीते तिसै न जाणन्ही बिनु नावै सभि चोर ॥६॥

Jinhi keete tisai na jaa(nn)anhee binu naavai sabhi chor ||6||

They do not know the One who created them; without the Name, all are thieves. ||6||

इकि गुण विहाझहि अउगण विकणहि गुर कै सहजि सुभाइ ॥

Iki gu(nn) vihaajhahi auga(nn) vika(nn)ahi gur kai sahaji subhaai ||

Some purchase merits and sell off their demerits; through the Guru, they obtain peace and poise.

Gur sevaa te naau paaiaa vuthaa anddari aai ||7||

Serving the Guru, they obtain the Name, which comes to dwell deep within. ||7||

Sabhanaa kaa daataa eku hai siri dhanddhai laai ||

The One Lord is the Giver of all; He assigns tasks to each and every person.

नानक नामे लाइ सवारिअनु सबदे लए मिलाइ ॥८॥९॥३१॥

Naanak naame laai savaarianu sabade lae milaai ||8||9||31||

O Nanak, the Lord embellishes us with the Name; attached to the Word of the Shabad, we are merged into Him. ||8||9||31||

सभ नावै नो लोचदी जिसु क्रिपा करे सो पाए ॥

Sabh naavai no lochadee jisu kripaa kare so paae ||

Everyone longs for the Name, but he alone receives it, unto whom the Lord shows His Mercy.

बिनु नावै सभु दुखु है सुखु तिसु जिसु मंनि वसाए ॥१॥

Binu naavai sabhu dukhu hai sukhu tisu jisu manni vasaae ||1||

Without the Name, there is only pain; he alone obtains peace, whose mind is filled with the Name. ||1||

You are infinite and merciful; I seek Your Sanctuary.

अंतरि बाहरि एकु है बहु बिधि स्रिसटि उपाई ॥

Anttari baahari eku hai bahu bidhi srisati upaaee ||

Inwardly and outwardly, there is only the One Lord. He has created the world, with its many varieties.

हुकमे कार कराइदा दूजा किसु कहीऐ भाई ॥२॥

Hukame kaar karaaidaa doojaa kisu kaheeai bhaaee ||2||

According to the Order of His Will, He makes us act. What else can we talk about, O Siblings of Destiny? ||2||

Bujha(nn)aa abujha(nn)aa tudhu keeaa ih teree siri kaar ||

Knowledge and ignorance are all your making; You have control over these.

इकन्हा बखसिहि मेलि लैहि इकि दरगह मारि कढे कूड़िआर ॥३॥

Ikanhaa bakhasihi meli laihi iki daragah maari kadhe koo(rr)iaar ||3||

Some, You forgive, and unite with Yourself; while others, the wicked, you strike down and drive out of Your Court. ||3||

Iki dhuri pavit paavan hahi tudhu naame laae ||

Some, from the very beginning, are pure and pious; You attach them to Your Name.

Gur sevaa te sukhu upajai sachai sabadi bujhaae ||4||

Serving the Guru, peace wells up; through the True Word of the Shabad, one comes to understand. ||4||

ਇਕਿ ਕੁਚਲ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਵਿਖਲੀ ਪਤੇ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਏ ॥

इकि कुचल कुचील विखली पते नावहु आपि खुआए ॥

Iki kuchal kucheel vikhalee pate naavahu aapi khuaae ||

Some are crooked, filthy and vicious; the Lord Himself has led them astray from the Name.

ना ओन सिधि न बुधि है न संजमी फिरहि उतवताए ॥५॥

Naa on sidhi na budhi hai na sanjjamee phirahi utavataae ||5||

They have no intuition, no understanding and no self-discipline; they wander around delirious. ||5||

Nadari kare jisu aapa(nn)ee tis no bhaavanee laae ||

He grants faith to those whom He has blessed with His Glance of Grace.

सतु संतोखु इह संजमी मनु निरमलु सबदु सुणाए ॥६॥

Satu santtokhu ih sanjjamee manu niramalu sabadu su(nn)aae ||6||

This mind finds truth, contentment and self-discipline, hearing the Immaculate Word of the Shabad. ||6||

ਲੇਖਾ ਪੜਿ ਨ ਪਹੂਚੀਐ ਕਥਿ ਕਹਣੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

लेखा पड़ि न पहूचीऐ कथि कहणै अंतु न पाइ ॥

Lekhaa pa(rr)i na pahoocheeai kathi kaha(nn)ai anttu na paai ||

By reading books, one cannot reach Him; by speaking and talking, His limits cannot be found.

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੭॥

गुर ते कीमति पाईऐ सचि सबदि सोझी पाइ ॥७॥

Gur te keemati paaeeai sachi sabadi sojhee paai ||7||

Through the Guru, His value is found; through the True Word of the Shabad, understanding is obtained. ||7||

Ihu manu dehee sodhi toonn gur sabadi veechaari ||

So reform this mind and body, by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

नानक इसु देही विचि नामु निधानु है पाईऐ गुर कै हेति अपारि ॥८॥१०॥३२॥

Naanak isu dehee vichi naamu nidhaanu hai paaeeai gur kai heti apaari ||8||10||32||

O Nanak, within this body is the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; it is found through the Love of the Infinite Guru. ||8||10||32||

सचि रतीआ सोहागणी जिना गुर कै सबदि सीगारि ॥

Sachi rateeaa sohaaga(nn)ee jinaa gur kai sabadi seegaari ||

The happy soul-brides are imbued with Truth; they are adorned with the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

Ghar hee so piru paaiaa sachai sabadi veechaari ||1||

They find their Husband Lord within their own home, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||

Avaga(nn) gu(nn)ee bakhasaaiaa hari siu liv laaee ||

Through merits, their demerits are forgiven, and they embrace love for the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि वरु पाइआ कामणी गुरि मेलि मिलाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari varu paaiaa kaama(nn)ee guri meli milaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

The soul-bride then obtains the Lord as her Husband; meeting the Guru, this union comes about. ||1|| Pause ||

इकि पिरु हदूरि न जाणन्ही दूजै भरमि भुलाइ ॥

Iki piru hadoori na jaa(nn)anhee doojai bharami bhulaai ||

Some do not know the Presence of their Husband Lord; they are deluded by duality and doubt.

ਕਿਉ ਪਾਇਨੑਿ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਦੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੨॥

किउ पाइन्हि डोहागणी दुखी रैणि विहाइ ॥२॥

Kiu paainhi dohaaga(nn)ee dukhee rai(nn)i vihaai ||2||

How can the forsaken brides meet Him? Their life night passes in pain. ||2||

जिन कै मनि सचु वसिआ सची कार कमाइ ॥

Jin kai mani sachu vasiaa sachee kaar kamaai ||

Those whose minds are filled with the True Lord, perform truthful actions.

Dohaaga(nn)ee bharami bhulaaeeaa koo(rr)u boli bikhu khaahi ||

The forsaken brides wander around, deluded by doubt; telling lies, they eat poison.

Piru na jaa(nn)ani aapa(nn)aa sun(ny)ee sej dukhu paahi ||4||

They do not know their Husband Lord, and upon their deserted bed, they suffer in misery. ||4||

Sohaaga(nn)ee sadaa piru paaiaa haumai aapu gavaai ||

The happy soul-bride always finds her Husband Lord; she banishes egotism and self-conceit.

Pir setee anadinu gahi rahee sachee sej sukhu paai ||6||

Those who shouted, ""Mine, mine!"" have departed, without obtaining anything.

Mahalu naahee dohaaga(nn)ee antti gaee pachhutaai ||7||

The separated one does not obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and departs, repenting in the end. ||7||

O Nanak, if the soul-bride longs for peace, she should enshrine the Lord's Name within her mind. ||8||11||33||

Those whom the Lord has caused to drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, naturally, intuitively, enjoy the sublime essence.

Manamukhi sadaa dohaaga(nn)ee dari kha(rr)eeaa bilalaahi ||

The self-willed manmukhs are forever forsaken brides; they cry out and bewail at the Lord's Gate.

Those who do not enjoy the sublime taste of their Husband Lord, act according to their pre-ordained destiny. ||2||

Guramukhi beeje sachu jamai sachu naamu vaapaaru ||

Tanu manu seetalu mukh ujale pir kai bhaai piaari ||

Their bodies and minds are cooled and soothed, and their faces are radiant, from the love and affection of their Husband Lord.

Sej sukhaalee piru ravai haumai trisanaa maari ||6||

Kari kirapaa ghari aaiaa gur kai heti apaari ||

Granting His Grace, He comes into our homes, through our infinite Love for the Guru.

All of her sins are forgiven; the Uniter unites her with Himself.

Satigur te gu(nn) upajai jaa prbhu melai soi ||

Merit is obtained from the True Guru, when God causes us to meet Him.

E man mat jaa(nn)ahi hari doori hai sadaa vekhu hadoori ||

O my mind, do not think of the Lord as being far away; behold Him ever close at hand.

The Gurmukhs understand their own selves; they meditate single-mindedly on the Lord.

E man teraa ko nahee kari vekhu sabadi veechaaru ||

O my mind, no one belongs to you; contemplate the Shabad, and see this.

Sabadi su(nn)eeai sabadi bujheeai sachi rahai liv laai ||

Listen to the Shabad, and understand the Shabad, and lovingly focus your consciousness on the True One.

Sabade haumai maareeai sachai mahali sukhu paai ||4||

इसु जुग महि सोभा नाम की बिनु नावै सोभ न होइ ॥

Isu jug mahi sobhaa naam kee binu naavai sobh na hoi ||

In this age, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is glory; without the Name, there is no glory.

Ih maaiaa kee sobhaa chaari dihaa(rr)e jaadee bilamu na hoi ||5||

The glory of this Maya lasts for only a few days; it disappears in an instant. ||5||

Those who forget the Naam are already dead, and they continue dying.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੬॥

हरि रस सादु न आइओ बिसटा माहि समाहि ॥६॥

Hari ras saadu na aaio bisataa maahi samaahi ||6||

They do not enjoy the sublime essence of the Lord's taste; they sink into the manure. ||6||

Iki aape bakhasi milaaianu anadinu naame laai ||

Some are forgiven by the Lord; He unites them with Himself, and keeps them attached to the Naam, night and day.

Sachu kamaavahi sachi rahahi sache sachi samaahi ||7||

They practice Truth, and abide in Truth; being truthful, they merge into Truth. ||7||

बिनु सबदै सुणीऐ न देखीऐ जगु बोला अंन्हा भरमाइ ॥

Binu sabadai su(nn)eeai na dekheeai jagu bolaa annhaa bharamaai ||

Without the Shabad, the world does not hear, and does not see; deaf and blind, it wanders around.

बिनु नावै दुखु पाइसी नामु मिलै तिसै रजाइ ॥८॥

Binu naavai dukhu paaisee naamu milai tisai rajaai ||8||

Without the Naam, it obtains only misery; the Naam is received only by His Will. ||8||

Jin baa(nn)ee siu chitu laaiaa se jan niramal paravaa(nn)u ||

Those persons who link their consciousness with the Word of His Bani, are immaculately pure, and approved by the Lord.

O Nanak, they never forget the Naam, and in the Court of the Lord, they are known as true. ||9||13||35||

Through the Word of the Shabad, the devotees are known; their words are true.

Vichahu aapu gaiaa naau manniaa sachi milaavaa hoi ||1||

Haumai meraa jaati hai ati krodhu abhimaanu ||

Ego, self-centeredness, excessive anger and pride are the lot of mankind.

Sabadi marai taa jaati jaai jotee joti milai bhagavaanu ||2||

If one dies in the Word of the Shabad, then he is rid of this, and his light is merged into the Light of the Lord God. ||2||

Aavahi isu raasee ke vaapaareee jinhaa naamu piaaraa ||

Those who love the Naam come as dealers in the merchandise of the Naam.

गुरमुखि होवै सो धनु पाए तिन्हा अंतरि सबदु वीचारा ॥४॥

Guramukhi hovai so dhanu paae tinhaa anttari sabadu veechaaraa ||4||

Those who become Gurmukh obtain this wealth; deep within, they contemplate the Shabad. ||4||

Bhagatee saar na jaa(nn)anhee manamukh ahankkaaree ||

The egotistical, self-willed manmukhs do not appreciate the value of devotional worship.

Dhurahu aapi khuaaianu jooai baajee haaree ||5||

The Primal Lord Himself has beguiled them; they lose their lives in the gamble. ||5||

Binu piaarai bhagati na hovaee naa sukhu hoi sareeri ||

Without loving affection, devotional worship is not possible, and the body cannot be at peace.

Jis no bhagati karaae so kare gur sabad veechaari ||

Hiradai eko naamu vasai haumai dubidhaa maari ||7||

Bhagataa kee jati pati ekao naamu hai aape lae savaari ||

The One Name is the social status and honor of the devotees; the Lord Himself adorns them.

Sadaa sara(nn)aaee tis kee jiu bhaavai tiu kaaraju saari ||8||

They remain forever in the Protection of His Sanctuary. As it pleases His Will, He arranges their affairs. ||8||

Bhagati niraalee alaah dee jaapai gur veechaari ||

The worship of the Lord is unique - it is known only by reflecting upon the Guru.

O Nanak, one whose mind is filled with the Naam, through the Lord's Fear and devotion, is embellished with the Naam. ||9||14||36||

An ras mahi bholaaiaa binu naamai dukh paai ||

He wanders around, engrossed in other pleasures, but without the Naam, he suffers in pain.

E man mere baavale hari rasu chakhi saadu paai ||

O my insane mind, drink in the sublime essence of the Lord, and savor its taste.

इसु जुग महि गुरमुख निरमले सचि नामि रहहि लिव लाइ ॥

Isu jug mahi guramukh niramale sachi naami rahahi liv laai ||

In this age, the Gurmukhs are pure; they remain absorbed in the love of the True Name.

विणु करमा किछु पाईऐ नही किआ करि कहिआ जाइ ॥२॥

Vi(nn)u karamaa kichhu paaeeai nahee kiaa kari kahiaa jaai ||2||

Without the destiny of good karma, nothing can be obtained; what can we say or do? ||2||

Aapu pachhaa(nn)ahi sabadi marahi manahu taji vikaar ||

He understands his own self, and dies in the Word of the Shabad; he banishes corruption from his mind.

Gur sara(nn)aaee bhaji pae bakhase bakhasa(nn)ahaar ||3||

He hurries to the Guru's Sanctuary, and is forgiven by the Forgiving Lord. ||3||

Ihu jagu maaiaa mohi viaapiaa doojai bharami bhulaai ||4||

This world is engrossed in attachment to Maya; it has gone astray in duality and doubt. ||4||

दोहागणी पिर की सार न जाणही किआ करि करहि सीगारु ॥

Dohaaga(nn)ee pir kee saar na jaa(nn)ahee kiaa kari karahi seegaaru ||

The forsaken soul-brides do not know the value of their Husband Lord; how can they decorate themselves?

Anadinu sadaa jaladeeaa phirahi sejai ravai na bhataaru ||5||

Night and day, they continually burn, and they do not enjoy the Bed of their Husband Lord. ||5||

Sohaaga(nn)ee mahalu paaiaa vichahu aapu gavaai ||

The happy soul-brides obtain the Mansion of His Presence, eradicating their self-conceit from within.

Mara(nn)aa manahu visaariaa maaiaa mohu gubaaru ||

He has forgotten death, in the darkness of attachment to Maya.

मनमुख मरि मरि जमहि भी मरहि जम दरि होहि खुआरु ॥७॥

Manamukh mari mari jammahi bhee marahi jam dari hohi khuaaru ||7||

Chhachha: You are wearing away, every night and day; you fool, how will you find release? You are held in the grip of death. ||2||

Babba: You do not understand, you fool; deluded by doubt, you are wasting your life.

Without justification, you call yourself a teacher; thus you take on the loads of others. ||3||

Jajai joti hiri laee teree moo(rr)e antti gaiaa pachhutaavahigaa ||

Jajja: You have been robbed of your Light, you fool; in the end, you shall have to depart, and you shall regret and repent.

You have not remembered the One Word of the Shabad, and so you shall have to enter the womb over and over again. ||4||

Read that which is written on your forehead, O Pandit, and do not teach wickedness to others.

Pahilaa phaahaa paiaa paadhe pichho de gali chaata(rr)iaa ||5||

First, the teacher is tied down, and then, the noose is placed around the pupil's neck. ||5||

Sassa: You have lost your self-discipline, you fool, and you have accepted an offering under false pretenses.

साई पुत्री जजमान की सा तेरी एतु धानि खाधै तेरा जनमु गइआ ॥६॥

Saaee putree jajamaan kee saa teree etu dhaani khaadhai teraa janamu gaiaa ||6||

The daughter of the alms-giver is just like your own; by accepting this payment for performing the wedding ceremony, you have cursed your own life. ||6||

Mamma: You have been cheated out your intellect, you fool, and you are afflicted with the great disease of ego.

अंतर आतमै ब्रहमु न चीन्हिआ माइआ का मुहताजु भइआ ॥७॥

Within your innermost self, you do not recognize God, and you compromise yourself for the sake of Maya. ||7||

ककै कामि क्रोधि भरमिओहु मूड़े ममता लागे तुधु हरि विसरिआ ॥

Kakai kaami krodhi bharamiohu moo(rr)e mamataa laage tudhu hari visariaa ||

Kakka: You wander around in sexual desire and anger, you fool; attached to possessiveness, you have forgotten the Lord.

पड़हि गुणहि तूं बहुतु पुकारहि विणु बूझे तूं डूबि मुआ ॥८॥

Pa(rr)ahi gu(nn)ahi toonn bahutu pukaarahi vi(nn)u boojhe toonn doobi muaa ||8||

You read, and reflect, and proclaim out loud, but without understanding, you are drowned to death. ||8||

Tatai taamasi jaliohu moo(rr)e thathai thaan bharisatu hoaa ||

Tatta: In anger, you are burnt, you fool. T'hat'ha: That place where you live, is cursed.

घघै घरि घरि फिरहि तूं मूड़े ददै दानु न तुधु लइआ ॥९॥

Ghaghai ghari ghari phirahi toonn moo(rr)e dadai daanu na tudhu laiaa ||9||

Ghagha: You go begging from door to door, you fool. Dadda: But still, you do not receive the gift. ||9||

Papai paari na pavahee moo(rr)e parapancchi toonn palachi rahiaa ||

Pappa: You shall not be able to swim across, you fool, since you are engrossed in worldly affairs.

The True Lord Himself has ruined you, you fool; this is the destiny written on your forehead. ||10||

Bhabha: You have drowned in the terrifying world-ocean, you fool, and you have become engrossed in Maya.

Gur parasaadee eko jaa(nn)ai ek gha(rr)ee mahi paari paiaa ||11||

One who comes to know the One Lord, by Guru's Grace, is carried across in an instant. ||11||

एह वेला न लहसहि मूड़े फिरि तूं जम कै वसि पइआ ॥१२॥

Eh velaa na lahasahi moo(rr)e phiri toonn jam kai vasi paiaa ||12||

This opportunity shall not come again, you fool; you shall fall under the power of the Messenger of Death. ||12||

Jhajha: You shall never have to regret and repent, you fool, if you listen to the Teachings of the True Guru, for even an instant.

सतिगुर बाझहु गुरु नही कोई निगुरे का है नाउ बुरा ॥१३॥

Satigur baajhahu guru nahee koee nigure kaa hai naau buraa ||13||

Without the True Guru, there is no Guru at all; one who is without a Guru has a bad reputation. ||13||

Dhadha: Restrain your wandering mind, you fool; deep within you the treasure is to be found.

गुरमुखि होवहि ता हरि रसु पीवहि जुगा जुगंतरि खाहि पइआ ॥१४॥

Guramukhi hovahi taa hari rasu peevahi jugaa juganttari khaahi paiaa ||14||

When one becomes Gurmukh, then he drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord; throughout the ages, he continues to drink it in. ||14||

Gagai gobidu chiti kari moo(rr)e galee kinai na paaiaa ||

Gagga: Keep the Lord of the Universe in your mind, you fool; by mere words, no one has ever attained Him.

गुर के चरन हिरदै वसाइ मूड़े पिछले गुनह सभ बखसि लइआ ॥१५॥

Gur ke charan hiradai vasaai moo(rr)e pichhale gunah sabh bakhasi laiaa ||15||

Enshrine the Guru's feet within your heart, you fool, and all your past sins shall be forgiven. ||15||

Haahai hari kathaa boojhu toonn moo(rr)e taa sadaa sukhu hoee ||

Haha: Understand the Lord's Sermon, you fool; only then shall you attain eternal peace.

मनमुखि पड़हि तेता दुखु लागै विणु सतिगुर मुकति न होई ॥१६॥

Manamukhi pa(rr)ahi tetaa dukhu laagai vi(nn)u satigur mukati na hoee ||16||

The more the self-willed manmukhs read, the more pain they suffer. Without the True Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||16||

गुर परसादी जिन्ही रामु पछाता निरगुण रामु तिन्ही बूझि लहिआ ॥१७॥

Gur parasaadee jinhee raamu pachhaataa niragu(nn) raamu tinhee boojhi lahiaa ||17||

God Himself has consummated this union; the soul-bride enshrines Truth within her mind, intoxicated with peaceful poise.

Aapu gavaae hari varu paae taa hari rasu manni vasaaiaa ||

Eradicating her ego, she obtains her Husband Lord, and then, the sublime essence of the Lord dwells within her mind.

Dooja(rr)ai kaama(nn)i bharami bhulee hari varu na paae raam ||

The soul-bride who has been led astray by duality and doubt, does not attain her Husband Lord.

Kaama(nn)i gu(nn)u naahee birathaa janamu gavaae raam ||

That soul-bride has no virtue, and she wastes her life in vain.

बिरथा जनमु गवाए मनमुखि इआणी अउगणवंती झूरे ॥

Birathaa janamu gavaae manamukhi iaa(nn)ee auga(nn)avanttee jhoore ||

The self-willed, ignorant and disgraceful manmukh wastes her life in vain, and in the end, she comes to grief.

आपणा सतिगुरु सेवि सदा सुखु पाइआ ता पिरु मिलिआ हदूरे ॥

Aapa(nn)aa satiguru sevi sadaa sukhu paaiaa taa piru miliaa hadoore ||

But when she serves her True Guru, she obtains peace, and then she meets her Husband Lord, face to face.

Dekhi piru vigasee anddarahu sarasee sachai sabadi subhaae ||

Beholding her Husband Lord, she blossoms forth; her heart is delighted, and she is beautified by the True Word of the Shabad.

O Nanak, without the Name, the soul-bride wanders around, deluded by doubt. Meeting her Beloved, she obtains peace. ||2||

Piru sanggi kaama(nn)i jaa(nn)iaa guri meli milaaee raam ||

The soul-bride knows that her Husband Lord is with her; the Guru unites her in this union.

Anttari sabadi milee sahaje tapati bujhaaee raam ||

Within her heart, she is merged with the Shabad, and the fire of her desire is easily extinguished.

सबदि तपति बुझाई अंतरि सांति आई सहजे हरि रसु चाखिआ ॥

Sabadi tapati bujhaaee anttari saanti aaee sahaje hari rasu chaakhiaa ||

The Shabad has quenched the fire of desire, and within her heart, peace and tranquility have come; she tastes the Lord's essence with intuitive ease.

Meeting her Beloved, she enjoys His Love continually, and her speech rings with the True Shabad.

पड़ि पड़ि पंडित मोनी थाके भेखी मुकति न पाई ॥

Pa(rr)i pa(rr)i panddit monee thaake bhekhee mukati na paaee ||

Reading and studying continually, the Pandits, the religious scholars, and the silent sages have grown weary; wearing religious robes, liberation is not obtained.

O Nanak, without devotional worship, the world has gone insane; through the True Word of the Shabad, one meets the Lord. ||3||

Saa dhan hari kai rasi rasee gur kai sabadi apaare raam ||

सबदि अपारे मिले पिआरे सदा गुण सारे मनि वसे ॥

Sabadi apaare mile piaare sadaa gu(nn) saare mani vase ||

Through the incomparable Word of the Guru's Shabad, she meets her Beloved; she continually contemplates and enshrines His Glorious Virtues in her mind.

सेज सुहावी जा पिरि रावी मिलि प्रीतम अवगण नसे ॥

Sej suhaavee jaa piri raavee mili preetam avaga(nn) nase ||

Her bed was adorned when she enjoyed her Husband Lord; meeting with her Beloved, her demerits were erased.

जितु घरि नामु हरि सदा धिआईऐ सोहिलड़ा जुग चारे ॥

Jitu ghari naamu hari sadaa dhiaaeeai sohila(rr)aa jug chaare ||

That house, within which the Lord's Name is continually meditated upon, resounds with the wedding songs of rejoicing, throughout the four ages.

नानक नामि रते सदा अनदु है हरि मिलिआ कारज सारे ॥४॥१॥६॥

O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, we are in bliss forever; meeting the Lord, our affairs are resolved. ||4||1||6||

Guru sevahu sadaa aapa(nn)aa naamu padaarathu leho ||

Serve your Guru constantly, and obtain the wealth of the Naam.

भगति करहु तुम सहै केरी जो सह पिआरे भावए ॥

Bhagati karahu tum sahai keree jo sah piaare bhaavae ||

Dedicate yourself to the worship of your Husband Lord; this is pleasing to your Beloved Husband.

ਆਪਣਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਤੁਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਸਹ ਖੁਸੀ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥

आपणा भाणा तुम करहु ता फिरि सह खुसी न आवए ॥

Aapa(nn)aa bhaa(nn)aa tum karahu taa phiri sah khusee na aavae ||

If you walk in accordance with your own will, then your Husband Lord will not be pleased with you.

भगति भाव इहु मारगु बिखड़ा गुर दुआरै को पावए ॥

Bhagati bhaav ihu maaragu bikha(rr)aa gur duaarai ko paavae ||

This path of loving devotional worship is very difficult; how rare are those who find it, through the Gurdwara, the Guru's Gate.

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਏ ॥੧॥

कहै नानकु जिसु करे किरपा सो हरि भगती चितु लावए ॥१॥

Kahai naanaku jisu kare kirapaa so hari bhagatee chitu laavae ||1||

Says Nanak, that one, upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, links his consciousness to the worship of the Lord. ||1||

मेरे मन बैरागीआ तूं बैरागु करि किसु दिखावहि ॥

Mere man bairaageeaa toonn bairaagu kari kisu dikhaavahi ||

O my detached mind, unto whom do you show your detachment?

Hari sohilaa tinh sad sadaa jo hari gu(nn) gaavahi ||

Those who sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord live in the joy of the Lord, forever and ever.

ਕਰਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਤੂੰ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਏ ॥

करि बैरागु तूं छोडि पाखंडु सो सहु सभु किछु जाणए ॥

Kari bairaagu toonn chhodi paakhanddu so sahu sabhu kichhu jaa(nn)ae ||

So become detached, and renounce hypocrisy; Your Husband Lord knows everything.

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਏ ॥

जलि थलि महीअलि एको सोई गुरमुखि हुकमु पछाणए ॥

Jali thali maheeali eko soee guramukhi hukamu pachhaa(nn)ae ||

The One Lord is pervading the water, the land and the sky; the Gurmukh realizes the Command of His Will.

जिनि हुकमु पछाता हरी केरा सोई सरब सुख पावए ॥

Jini hukamu pachhaataa haree keraa soee sarab sukh paavae ||

One who realizes the Lord's Command, obtains all peace and comforts.

Iv kahai naanaku so bairaagee anadinu hari liv laavae ||2||

Thus says Nanak: such a detached soul remains absorbed in the Lord's Love, day and night. ||2||

जह जह मन तूं धावदा तह तह हरि तेरै नाले ॥

Jah jah man toonn dhaavadaa tah tah hari terai naale ||

Wherever you wander, O my mind, the Lord is there with you.

Janam janam ke tere paap kate antti param padu paavahe ||

The sins of countless incarnations shall be washed away, and in the end, you shall obtain the supreme status.

It purchases the Naam, chants the Naam, and remains absorbed in the Naam.

The outgoing, wandering soul, upon meeting the True Guru, opens the Tenth Gate.

तिथै अम्रित भोजनु सहज धुनि उपजै जितु सबदि जगतु थम्हि रहाइआ ॥

Tithai ammmrit bhojanu sahaj dhuni upajai jitu sabadi jagatu thammhi rahaaiaa ||

There, Ambrosial Nectar is food and the celestial music resounds; the world is held spell-bound by the music of the Word.

Tah anek vaaje sadaa anadu hai sache rahiaa samaae ||

The many strains of the unstruck melody resound there, as one merges in Truth.

Man hari jee terai naali hai guramatee ranggu maa(nn)u ||

मूलु पछाणहि तां सहु जाणहि मरण जीवण की सोझी होई ॥

Moolu pachhaa(nn)ahi taan sahu jaa(nn)ahi mara(nn) jeeva(nn) kee sojhee hoee ||

Acknowledge your origin, and then you shall know your Husband Lord, and so understand death and birth.

Gur parasaadee eko jaa(nn)ahi taan doojaa bhaau na hoee ||

By Guru's Grace, know the One; then, you shall not love any other.

Mani saanti aaee vajee vadhaaee taa hoaa paravaa(nn)u ||

Peace comes to the mind, and gladness resounds; then, you shall be acclaimed.

Maaiaa moha(nn)ee mohiaa phiri phiri joonee bhavaahi ||

The fascinating Maya has fascinated you, over and over again, and lured you into reincarnation.

गारबि लागा जाहि मुगध मन अंति गइआ पछुतावहे ॥

Gaarabi laagaa jaahi mugadh man antti gaiaa pachhutaavahe ||

Clinging to pride, you shall depart, O foolish mind, and in the end, you shall regret and repent.

ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਲਗਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੇ ॥

अहंकारु तिसना रोगु लगा बिरथा जनमु गवावहे ॥

Ahankkaaru tisanaa rogu lagaa birathaa janamu gavaavahe ||

You are afflicted with the diseases of ego and desire, and you are wasting your life away in vain.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਹੇ ॥

मनमुख मुगध चेतहि नाही अगै गइआ पछुतावहे ॥

Manamukh mugadh chetahi naahee agai gaiaa pachhutaavahe ||

The foolish self-willed manmukh does not remember the Lord, and shall regret and repent hereafter.

O mind, don't be so proud of yourself, as if you know it all; the Gurmukh is humble and modest.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਹਉ ਬੁਧਿ ਹੈ ਸਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਹੁ ॥

अंतरि अगिआनु हउ बुधि है सचि सबदि मलु खोहु ॥

Anttari agiaanu hau budhi hai sachi sabadi malu khohu ||

Within the intellect are ignorance and ego; through the True Word of the Shabad, this filth is washed off.

ਹੋਹੁ ਨਿਮਾਣਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਅਗੈ ਮਤ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਪੁ ਲਖਾਵਹੇ ॥

होहु निमाणा सतिगुरू अगै मत किछु आपु लखावहे ॥

Hohu nimaa(nn)aa satiguroo agai mat kichhu aapu lakhaavahe ||

So be humble, and surrender to the True Guru; do not attach your identity to your ego.

ਆਪਣੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਮਤ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵਹੇ ॥

आपणै अहंकारि जगतु जलिआ मत तूं आपणा आपु गवावहे ॥

Aapa(nn)ai ahankkaari jagatu jaliaa mat toonn aapa(nn)aa aapu gavaavahe ||

The world is consumed by ego and self-identity; see this, lest you lose your own self as well.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਾਰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੁ ॥

सतिगुर कै भाणै करहि कार सतिगुर कै भाणै लागि रहु ॥

Satigur kai bhaa(nn)ai karahi kaar satigur kai bhaa(nn)ai laagi rahu ||

Make yourself follow the Sweet Will of the True Guru; remain attached to His Sweet Will.

इउ कहै नानकु आपु छडि सुख पावहि मन निमाणा होइ रहु ॥७॥

Iu kahai naanaku aapu chhadi sukh paavahi man nimaa(nn)aa hoi rahu ||7||

Thus says Nanak: renounce your ego and self-conceit, and obtain peace; let your mind abide in humility. ||7||

धंनु सु वेला जितु मै सतिगुरु मिलिआ सो सहु चिति आइआ ॥

Dhannu su velaa jitu mai satiguru miliaa so sahu chiti aaiaa ||

Blessed is that time, when I met the True Guru, and my Husband Lord came into my consciousness.

Mahaa ananddu sahaju bhaiaa mani tani sukhu paaiaa ||

I became so very blissful, and my mind and body found such a natural peace.

ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਇਆ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਅਵਗਣ ਸਭਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ॥

सो सहु चिति आइआ मंनि वसाइआ अवगण सभि विसारे ॥

So sahu chiti aaiaa manni vasaaiaa avaga(nn) sabhi visaare ||

My Husband Lord came into my consciousness; I enshrined Him within my mind, and I renounced all vice.
