नानक गुरमुखि बखसीअहि से सतिगुर मेलि मिलाउ ॥२॥

Naanak guramukhi bakhaseeahi se satigur meli milaau ||2||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are forgiven, and united in Union with the True Guru. ||2||

Shalok, Third Mehl:

ਥਾਲੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੈ ਵਸਤੂ ਪਈਓ ਹਰਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

थालै विचि तै वसतू पईओ हरि भोजनु अम्रितु सारु ॥

Thaalai vichi tai vasatoo paeeo hari bhojanu ammmritu saaru ||

Upon the plate, three things have been placed; this is the sublime, ambrosial food of the Lord.

ਜਿਤੁ ਖਾਧੈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

जितु खाधै मनु त्रिपतीऐ पाईऐ मोख दुआरु ॥

Jitu khaadhai manu tripateeai paaeeai mokh duaaru ||

Eating this, the mind is satisfied, and the Door of Salvation is found.

ਇਹੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਅਲਭੁ ਹੈ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਲਭੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

इहु भोजनु अलभु है संतहु लभै गुर वीचारि ॥

Ihu bhojanu alabhu hai santtahu labhai gur veechaari ||

It is so difficult to obtain this food, O Saints; it is obtained only by contemplating the Guru.

ਏਹ ਮੁਦਾਵਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਕਢੀਐ ਸਦਾ ਰਖੀਐ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

एह मुदावणी किउ विचहु कढीऐ सदा रखीऐ उरि धारि ॥

Eh mudaava(nn)ee kiu vichahu kadheeai sadaa rakheeai uri dhaari ||

Why should we cast this riddle out of our minds? We should keep it ever enshrined in our hearts.

ਏਹ ਮੁਦਾਵਣੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਲਧੀ ਭਾਲਿ ॥

एह मुदावणी सतिगुरू पाई गुरसिखा लधी भालि ॥

Eh mudaava(nn)ee satiguroo paaee gurasikhaa ladhee bhaali ||

The True Guru has posed this riddle. The Guru's Sikhs have found its solution.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੁ ਬੁਝਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲਿ ॥੧॥

नानक जिसु बुझाए सु बुझसी हरि पाइआ गुरमुखि घालि ॥१॥

Naanak jisu bujhaae su bujhasee hari paaiaa guramukhi ghaali ||1||

O Nanak, he alone understands this, whom the Lord inspires to understand. The Gurmukhs work hard, and find the Lord. ||1||

ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

जो धुरि मेले से मिलि रहे सतिगुर सिउ चितु लाइ ॥

Jo dhuri mele se mili rahe satigur siu chitu laai ||

Those whom the Primal Lord unites, remain in Union with Him; they focus their consciousness on the True Guru.

ਆਪਿ ਵਿਛੋੜੇਨੁ ਸੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਇ ॥

आपि विछोड़ेनु से विछुड़े दूजै भाइ खुआइ ॥

Aapi vichho(rr)enu se vichhu(rr)e doojai bhaai khuaai ||

Those whom the Lord Himself separates, remain separated; in the love of duality, they are ruined.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक विणु करमा किआ पाईऐ पूरबि लिखिआ कमाइ ॥२॥

Naanak vi(nn)u karamaa kiaa paaeeai poorabi likhiaa kamaai ||2||

O Nanak, without good karma, what can anyone obtain? He earns what he is pre-destined to receive. ||2||

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਨਿਤ ਜਗਿ ਤੋਟਾ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥

विणु नावै सभि भरमदे नित जगि तोटा सैसारि ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai sabhi bharamade nit jagi totaa saisaari ||

Without the Name of the Lord, everyone wanders around the world, losing.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਣੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

मनमुखि करम कमावणे हउमै अंधु गुबारु ॥

Manamukhi karam kamaava(nn)e haumai anddhu gubaaru ||

The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in the pitch black darkness of egotism.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि अम्रितु पीवणा नानक सबदु वीचारि ॥१॥

Guramukhi ammmritu peeva(nn)aa naanak sabadu veechaari ||1||

The Gurmukhs drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, O Nanak, contemplating the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

Third Mehl:

ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

सहजे जागै सहजे सोवै ॥

Sahaje jaagai sahaje sovai ||

He wakes in peace, and he sleeps in peace.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

गुरमुखि अनदिनु उसतति होवै ॥

Guramukhi anadinu usatati hovai ||

The Gurmukh praises the Lord night and day.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮੈ ਸਹਸਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

मनमुख भरमै सहसा होवै ॥

Manamukh bharamai sahasaa hovai ||

The self-willed manmukh remains deluded by his doubts.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

अंतरि चिंता नीद न सोवै ॥

Anttari chinttaa need na sovai ||

He is filled with anxiety, and he cannot even sleep.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਗਹਿ ਸਵਹਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

गिआनी जागहि सवहि सुभाइ ॥

Giaanee jaagahi savahi subhaai ||

The spiritually wise wake and sleep in peace.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਿਆ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥

नानक नामि रतिआ बलि जाउ ॥२॥

Naanak naami ratiaa bali jaau ||2||

Nanak is a sacrifice to those who are imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਜਿਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

अंतरि गिआनु न आइओ जितु किछु सोझी पाइ ॥

Anttari giaanu na aaio jitu kichhu sojhee paai ||

Spiritual wisdom, which would bring understanding, does not enter into his mind.

ਵਿਣੁ ਡਿਠਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

विणु डिठा किआ सालाहीऐ अंधा अंधु कमाइ ॥

Vi(nn)u dithaa kiaa saalaaheeai anddhaa anddhu kamaai ||

Without seeing, how can he praise the Lord? The blind act in blindness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥

नानक सबदु पछाणीऐ नामु वसै मनि आइ ॥१॥

Naanak sabadu pachhaa(nn)eeai naamu vasai mani aai ||1||

O Nanak, when one realizes the Word of the Shabad, then the Naam comes to abide in the mind. ||1||

ਇਕਾ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਇਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

इका बाणी इकु गुरु इको सबदु वीचारि ॥

Ikaa baa(nn)ee iku guru iko sabadu veechaari ||

There is One Bani; there is One Guru; there is one Shabad to contemplate.

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਹਟੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥

सचा सउदा हटु सचु रतनी भरे भंडार ॥

Sachaa saudaa hatu sachu ratanee bhare bhanddaar ||

True is the merchandise, and true is the shop; the warehouses are overflowing with jewels.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਅਨਿ ਜੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

गुर किरपा ते पाईअनि जे देवै देवणहारु ॥

Gur kirapaa te paaeeani je devai deva(nn)ahaaru ||

By Guru's Grace, they are obtained, if the Great Giver gives them.

ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਖਟਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

सचा सउदा लाभु सदा खटिआ नामु अपारु ॥

Sachaa saudaa laabhu sadaa khatiaa naamu apaaru ||

Dealing in this true merchandise, one earns the profit of the incomparable Naam.

ਵਿਖੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਆ ਕਰਮਿ ਪੀਆਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

विखु विचि अम्रितु प्रगटिआ करमि पीआवणहारु ॥

Vikhu vichi ammmritu prgatiaa karami peeaava(nn)ahaaru ||

In the midst of poison, the Ambrosial Nectar is revealed; by His Mercy, one drinks it in.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

नानक सचु सलाहीऐ धंनु सवारणहारु ॥२॥

Naanak sachu salaaheeai dhannu savaara(nn)ahaaru ||2||

O Nanak, praise the True Lord; blessed is the Creator, the Embellisher. ||2||

ਸੇਖਾ ਚਉਚਕਿਆ ਚਉਵਾਇਆ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣਿ ॥

सेखा चउचकिआ चउवाइआ एहु मनु इकतु घरि आणि ॥

Sekhaa chauchakiaa chauvaaiaa ehu manu ikatu ghari aa(nn)i ||

O Shaykh, you wander in the four directions, blown by the four winds; bring your mind back to the home of the One Lord.

ਏਹੜ ਤੇਹੜ ਛਡਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

एहड़ तेहड़ छडि तू गुर का सबदु पछाणु ॥

Eha(rr) teha(rr) chhadi too gur kaa sabadu pachhaa(nn)u ||

Renounce your petty arguments, and realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਢਹਿ ਪਉ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

सतिगुर अगै ढहि पउ सभु किछु जाणै जाणु ॥

Satigur agai dhahi pau sabhu kichhu jaa(nn)ai jaa(nn)u ||

Bow in humble respect before the True Guru; He is the Knower who knows everything.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਜਲਾਇ ਤੂ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੁ ਮਿਹਮਾਣੁ ॥

आसा मनसा जलाइ तू होइ रहु मिहमाणु ॥

Aasaa manasaa jalaai too hoi rahu mihamaa(nn)u ||

Burn away your hopes and desires, and live like a guest in this world.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਭੀ ਚਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਣੁ ॥

सतिगुर कै भाणै भी चलहि ता दरगह पावहि माणु ॥

Satigur kai bhaa(nn)ai bhee chalahi taa daragah paavahi maa(nn)u ||

If you walk in harmony with the True Guru's Will, then you shall be honored in the Court of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਧਿਗੁ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਧਿਗੁ ਖਾਣੁ ॥੧॥

नानक जि नामु न चेतनी तिन धिगु पैनणु धिगु खाणु ॥१॥

Naanak ji naamu na chetanee tin dhigu paina(nn)u dhigu khaa(nn)u ||1||

O Nanak, those who do not contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord - cursed are their clothes, and cursed is their food. ||1||

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

हरि गुण तोटि न आवई कीमति कहणु न जाइ ॥

Hari gu(nn) toti na aavaee keemati kaha(nn)u na jaai ||

There is no end to the Lord's Glorious Praises; His worth cannot be described.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक गुरमुखि हरि गुण रवहि गुण महि रहै समाइ ॥२॥

Naanak guramukhi hari gu(nn) ravahi gu(nn) mahi rahai samaai ||2||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they are absorbed in His Glorious Virtues. ||2||

ਪਰਥਾਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਮਹਾ ਪੁਰਖ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਸਾਝੀ ਸਗਲ ਜਹਾਨੈ ॥

परथाइ साखी महा पुरख बोलदे साझी सगल जहानै ॥

Parathaai saakhee mahaa purakh bolade saajhee sagal jahaanai ||

Great men speak the teachings by relating them to individual situations, but the whole world shares in them.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਭਉ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

गुरमुखि होइ सु भउ करे आपणा आपु पछाणै ॥

Guramukhi hoi su bhau kare aapa(nn)aa aapu pachhaa(nn)ai ||

One who becomes Gurmukh knows the Fear of God, and realizes his own self.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

गुर परसादी जीवतु मरै ता मन ही ते मनु मानै ॥

Gur parasaadee jeevatu marai taa man hee te manu maanai ||

If, by Guru's Grace, one remains dead while yet alive, the mind becomes content in itself.

ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਥਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੈ ॥੧॥

जिन कउ मन की परतीति नाही नानक से किआ कथहि गिआनै ॥१॥

Jin kau man kee parateeti naahee naanak se kiaa kathahi giaanai ||1||

Those who have no faith in their own minds, O Nanak - how can they speak of spiritual wisdom? ||1||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਓ ਅੰਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਹੁਤਾ ਆਇ ॥

गुरमुखि चितु न लाइओ अंति दुखु पहुता आइ ॥

Guramukhi chitu na laaio antti dukhu pahutaa aai ||

Those who do not focus their consciousness on the Lord, as Gurmukh, suffer pain and grief in the end.

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਆਂ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥

अंदरहु बाहरहु अंधिआं सुधि न काई पाइ ॥

Anddarahu baaharahu anddhiaan sudhi na kaaee paai ||

They are blind, inwardly and outwardly, and they do not understand anything.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਕਤੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਖਾਇ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

पंडित तिन की बरकती सभु जगतु खाइ जो रते हरि नाइ ॥

Panddit tin kee barakatee sabhu jagatu khaai jo rate hari naai ||

O Pandit, O religious scholar, the whole world is fed for the sake of those who are attuned to the Lord's Name.

ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

जिन गुर कै सबदि सलाहिआ हरि सिउ रहे समाइ ॥

Jin gur kai sabadi salaahiaa hari siu rahe samaai ||

Those who praise the Word of the Guru's Shabad, remain blended with the Lord.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

पंडित दूजै भाइ बरकति न होवई ना धनु पलै पाइ ॥

Panddit doojai bhaai barakati na hovaee naa dhanu palai paai ||

O Pandit, O religious scholar, no one is satisfied, and no one finds true wealth through the love of duality.

ਪੜਿ ਥਕੇ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥

पड़ि थके संतोखु न आइओ अनदिनु जलत विहाइ ॥

Pa(rr)i thake santtokhu na aaio anadinu jalat vihaai ||

They have grown weary of reading scriptures, but still, they do not find contentment, and they pass their lives burning, night and day.

ਕੂਕ ਪੂਕਾਰ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਨਾ ਸੰਸਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

कूक पूकार न चुकई ना संसा विचहु जाइ ॥

Kook pookaar na chukaee naa sanssaa vichahu jaai ||

Their cries and complaints never end, and doubt does not depart from within them.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक नाम विहूणिआ मुहि कालै उठि जाइ ॥२॥

Naanak naam vihoo(nn)iaa muhi kaalai uthi jaai ||2||

O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, they rise up and depart with blackened faces. ||2||

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਜੇ ਵੇਦ ਪੜੈ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

पंडित मैलु न चुकई जे वेद पड़ै जुग चारि ॥

Panddit mailu na chukaee je ved pa(rr)ai jug chaari ||

O Pandit, O religious scholar, your filth shall not be erased, even if you read the Vedas for four ages.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥

त्रै गुण माइआ मूलु है विचि हउमै नामु विसारि ॥

Trai gu(nn) maaiaa moolu hai vichi haumai naamu visaari ||

The three qualities are the roots of Maya; in egotism, one forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਭੂਲੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੈ ਵਾਪਾਰਿ ॥

पंडित भूले दूजै लागे माइआ कै वापारि ॥

Panddit bhoole doojai laage maaiaa kai vaapaari ||

The Pandits are deluded, attached to duality, and they deal only in Maya.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਹੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਭੁਖਿਆ ਮੁਏ ਗਵਾਰ ॥

अंतरि त्रिसना भुख है मूरख भुखिआ मुए गवार ॥

Anttari trisanaa bhukh hai moorakh bhukhiaa mue gavaar ||

They are filled with thirst and hunger; the ignorant fools starve to death.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

सतिगुरि सेविऐ सुखु पाइआ सचै सबदि वीचारि ॥

Satiguri seviai sukhu paaiaa sachai sabadi veechaari ||

Serving the True Guru, peace is obtained, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad.

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਗਈ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

अंदरहु त्रिसना भुख गई सचै नाइ पिआरि ॥

Anddarahu trisanaa bhukh gaee sachai naai piaari ||

Hunger and thirst have departed from within me; I am in love with the True Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਜੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

नानक नामि रते सहजे रजे जिना हरि रखिआ उरि धारि ॥१॥

Naanak naami rate sahaje raje jinaa hari rakhiaa uri dhaari ||1||

O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Naam, who keep the Lord clasped tightly to their hearts, are automatically satisfied. ||1||

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਗਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਆਇ ॥

मनमुख हरि नामु न सेविआ दुखु लगा बहुता आइ ॥

Manamukh hari naamu na seviaa dukhu lagaa bahutaa aai ||

The self-willed manmukh does not serve the Lord's Name, and so he suffers in horrible pain.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਹੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥

अंतरि अगिआनु अंधेरु है सुधि न काई पाइ ॥

Anttari agiaanu anddheru hai sudhi na kaaee paai ||

He is filled with the darkness of ignorance, and he does not understand anything.

ਮਨਹਠਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਬੀਜਿਓ ਭੁਖਾ ਕਿ ਅਗੈ ਖਾਇ ॥

मनहठि सहजि न बीजिओ भुखा कि अगै खाइ ॥

Manahathi sahaji na beejio bhukhaa ki agai khaai ||

Because of his stubborn mind, he does not plant the seeds of intuitive peace; what will he eat in the world hereafter, to satisfy his hunger?

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

नामु निधानु विसारिआ दूजै लगा जाइ ॥

Naamu nidhaanu visaariaa doojai lagaa jaai ||

He has forgotten the treasure of the Naam; he is caught in the love of duality.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਜੇ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक गुरमुखि मिलहि वडिआईआ जे आपे मेलि मिलाइ ॥२॥

Naanak guramukhi milahi vadiaaeeaa je aape meli milaai ||2||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are honored with glory, when the Lord Himself unites them in His Union. ||2||

ਹਸਤੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਿਉ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਹਰਣਿ ਜਿਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੇਇ ॥

हसती सिरि जिउ अंकसु है अहरणि जिउ सिरु देइ ॥

Hasatee siri jiu ankkasu hai ahara(nn)i jiu siru dei ||

The elephant offers its head to the reins, and the anvil offers itself to the hammer;

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿ ਕੈ ਊਭੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

मनु तनु आगै राखि कै ऊभी सेव करेइ ॥

Manu tanu aagai raakhi kai ubhee sev karei ||

Just so, we offer our minds and bodies to our Guru; we stand before Him, and serve Him.

ਇਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਾ ਲੇਇ ॥

इउ गुरमुखि आपु निवारीऐ सभु राजु स्रिसटि का लेइ ॥

Iu guramukhi aapu nivaareeai sabhu raaju srisati kaa lei ||

This is how the Gurmukhs eliminate their self-conceit, and come to rule the whole world.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि बुझीऐ जा आपे नदरि करेइ ॥१॥

Naanak guramukhi bujheeai jaa aape nadari karei ||1||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh understands, when the Lord casts His Glance of Grace. ||1||

ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਆਏ ਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

जिन गुरमुखि नामु धिआइआ आए ते परवाणु ॥

Jin guramukhi naamu dhiaaiaa aae te paravaa(nn)u ||

Blessed and approved is the coming into the world, of those Gurmukhs who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

नानक कुल उधारहि आपणा दरगह पावहि माणु ॥२॥

Naanak kul udhaarahi aapa(nn)aa daragah paavahi maa(nn)u ||2||

O Nanak, they save their families, and they are honored in the Court of the Lord. ||2||

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਅਵਰੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

नानक नामु न चेतनी अगिआनी अंधुले अवरे करम कमाहि ॥

Naanak naamu na chetanee agiaanee anddhule avare karam kamaahi ||

O Nanak, the blind, ignorant fools do not remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord; they involve themselves in other activities.

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

जम दरि बधे मारीअहि फिरि विसटा माहि पचाहि ॥१॥

Jam dari badhe maareeahi phiri visataa maahi pachaahi ||1||

They are bound and gagged at the door of the Messenger of Death; they are punished, and in the end, they rot away in manure. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

नानक सतिगुरु सेवहि आपणा से जन सचे परवाणु ॥

Naanak satiguru sevahi aapa(nn)aa se jan sache paravaa(nn)u ||

O Nanak, those humble beings are true and approved, who serve their True Guru.

ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਚੂਕਾ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

हरि कै नाइ समाइ रहे चूका आवणु जाणु ॥२॥

Hari kai naai samaai rahe chookaa aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u ||2||

They remain absorbed in the Name of the Lord, and their comings and goings cease. ||2||

ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮੈ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

बिनु करमै नाउ न पाईऐ पूरै करमि पाइआ जाइ ॥

Binu karamai naau na paaeeai poorai karami paaiaa jaai ||

Without the karma of good actions, the Name is not obtained; it can be obtained only by perfect good karma.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक नदरि करे जे आपणी ता गुरमति मेलि मिलाइ ॥१॥

Naanak nadari kare je aapa(nn)ee taa guramati meli milaai ||1||

O Nanak, if the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, then under Guru's Instruction, one is united in His Union. ||1||

Naanak naavahu ghuthiaa halatu palatu sabhu jaai ||

O Nanak, forsaking the Name, he loses everything, in this world and the next.

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਇਆ ਮੁਠੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

जपु तपु संजमु सभु हिरि लइआ मुठी दूजै भाइ ॥

Japu tapu sanjjamu sabhu hiri laiaa muthee doojai bhaai ||

Chanting, deep meditation and austere self-disciplined practices are all wasted; he is deceived by the love of duality.

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

जम दरि बधे मारीअहि बहुती मिलै सजाइ ॥१॥

Jam dari badhe maareeahi bahutee milai sajaai ||1||

He is bound and gagged at the door of the Messenger of Death. He is beaten, and receives terrible punishment. ||1||

ਸੰਤਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦੁਸਟਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

संता नालि वैरु कमावदे दुसटा नालि मोहु पिआरु ॥

Santtaa naali vairu kamaavade dusataa naali mohu piaaru ||

They inflict their hatred upon the Saints, and they love the wicked sinners.

ਅਗੈ ਪਿਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥

अगै पिछै सुखु नही मरि जमहि वारो वार ॥

Agai pichhai sukhu nahee mari jammahi vaaro vaar ||

They find no peace in either this world or the next; they are born only to die, again and again.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਬੁਝਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

त्रिसना कदे न बुझई दुबिधा होइ खुआरु ॥

Trisanaa kade na bujhaee dubidhaa hoi khuaaru ||

Their hunger is never satisfied, and they are ruined by duality.

ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥

मुह काले तिना निंदका तितु सचै दरबारि ॥

Muh kaale tinaa ninddakaa titu sachai darabaari ||

The faces of these slanderers are blackened in the Court of the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

नानक नाम विहूणिआ ना उरवारि न पारि ॥२॥

Naanak naam vihoo(nn)iaa naa uravaari na paari ||2||

O Nanak, without the Naam, they find no shelter on either this shore, or the one beyond. ||2||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

सतिगुर की सेवा गाखड़ी सिरु दीजै आपु गवाइ ॥

Satigur kee sevaa gaakha(rr)ee siru deejai aapu gavaai ||

It is very difficult to serve the True Guru; offer your head, and eradicate self-conceit.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਨਾ ਮਰਹਿ ਤਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਪਵੈ ਸਭ ਥਾਇ ॥

सबदि मरहि फिरि ना मरहि ता सेवा पवै सभ थाइ ॥

Sabadi marahi phiri naa marahi taa sevaa pavai sabh thaai ||

One who dies in the Word of the Shabad shall never have to die again; his service is totally approved.

ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸਿਐ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

पारस परसिऐ पारसु होवै सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥

Paaras parasiai paarasu hovai sachi rahai liv laai ||

Touching the philosopher's stone, one becomes the philosopher's stone, which transforms lead into gold; remain lovingly attached to the True Lord.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਇ ॥

जिसु पूरबि होवै लिखिआ तिसु सतिगुरु मिलै प्रभु आइ ॥

Jisu poorabi hovai likhiaa tisu satiguru milai prbhu aai ||

One who has such pre-ordained destiny, comes to meet the True Guru and God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਣਤੈ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋ ਪਵੈ ਥਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक गणतै सेवकु ना मिलै जिसु बखसे सो पवै थाइ ॥१॥

Naanak ga(nn)atai sevaku naa milai jisu bakhase so pavai thaai ||1||

O Nanak, the Lord's servant does not meet Him because of his own account; he alone is acceptable, whom the Lord forgives. ||1||

ਮਹਲੁ ਕੁਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ॥

Mahalu kumahalu na jaa(nn)anee moorakh apa(nn)ai suaai ||

The fools do not know the difference between good and bad; they are deceived by their self-interests.

ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

सबदु चीनहि ता महलु लहहि जोती जोति समाइ ॥

Sabadu cheenahi taa mahalu lahahi jotee joti samaai ||

But if they contemplate the Word of the Shabad, they obtain the Mansion of the Lord's Presence, and their light merges in the Light.

ਸਦਾ ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਤਾ ਸਭਾ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

सदा सचे का भउ मनि वसै ता सभा सोझी पाइ ॥

Sadaa sache kaa bhau mani vasai taa sabhaa sojhee paai ||

The Fear of God is always on their minds, and so they come to understand everything.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਪਣੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

सतिगुरु अपणै घरि वरतदा आपे लए मिलाइ ॥

Satiguru apa(nn)ai ghari varatadaa aape lae milaai ||

The True Guru is pervading the homes within; He Himself blends them with the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਭ ਪੂਰੀ ਪਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक सतिगुरि मिलिऐ सभ पूरी पई जिस नो किरपा करे रजाइ ॥२॥

Naanak satiguri miliai sabh pooree paee jis no kirapaa kare rajaai ||2||

O Nanak, they meet the True Guru, and all their desires are fulfilled, if the Lord grants His Grace and so wills. ||2||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੈ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

ब्रहमु बिंदै तिस दा ब्रहमतु रहै एक सबदि लिव लाइ ॥

Brhamu binddai tis daa brhamatu rahai ek sabadi liv laai ||

One who knows God, and who lovingly focuses his attention on the One Word of the Shabad, keeps his spirituality intact.

ਨਵ ਨਿਧੀ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਸਿਧੀ ਪਿਛੈ ਲਗੀਆ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਦਾ ਵਸਾਇ ॥

नव निधी अठारह सिधी पिछै लगीआ फिरहि जो हरि हिरदै सदा वसाइ ॥

Nav nidhee athaarah sidhee pichhai lageeaa phirahi jo hari hiradai sadaa vasaai ||

The nine treasures and the eighteen spiritual powers of the Siddhas follow him, who keeps the Lord enshrined in his heart.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬੁਝਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर नाउ न पाईऐ बुझहु करि वीचारु ॥

Binu satigur naau na paaeeai bujhahu kari veechaaru ||

Without the True Guru, the Name is not found; understand this, and reflect upon it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

नानक पूरै भागि सतिगुरु मिलै सुखु पाए जुग चारि ॥१॥

Naanak poorai bhaagi satiguru milai sukhu paae jug chaari ||1||

O Nanak, through perfect good destiny, one meets the True Guru, and finds peace, throughout the four ages. ||1||

ਕਿਆ ਗਭਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

किआ गभरू किआ बिरधि है मनमुख त्रिसना भुख न जाइ ॥

Kiaa gabharoo kiaa biradhi hai manamukh trisanaa bhukh na jaai ||

Whether he is young or old, the self-willed manmukh cannot escape hunger and thirst.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਰਤਿਆ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਏ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

गुरमुखि सबदे रतिआ सीतलु होए आपु गवाइ ॥

Guramukhi sabade ratiaa seetalu hoe aapu gavaai ||

The Gurmukhs are imbued with the Word of the Shabad; they are at peace, having lost their self-conceit.

ਅੰਦਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਆਇ ॥

अंदरु त्रिपति संतोखिआ फिरि भुख न लगै आइ ॥

Anddaru tripati santtokhiaa phiri bhukh na lagai aai ||

They are satisfied and satiated within; they never feel hungry again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक जि गुरमुखि करहि सो परवाणु है जो नामि रहे लिव लाइ ॥२॥

Naanak ji guramukhi karahi so paravaa(nn)u hai jo naami rahe liv laai ||2||

O Nanak, whatever the Gurmukhs do is acceptable; they remain lovingly absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

गुर बिनु गिआनु न होवई ना सुखु वसै मनि आइ ॥

Gur binu giaanu na hovaee naa sukhu vasai mani aai ||

Without the Guru, spiritual wisdom is not obtained, and peace does not come to abide in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਜਾਸਨਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक नाम विहूणे मनमुखी जासनि जनमु गवाइ ॥१॥

Naanak naam vihoo(nn)e manamukhee jaasani janamu gavaai ||1||

O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the self-willed manmukhs depart, after having wasted their lives. ||1||

ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਨੋ ਸਭਿ ਖੋਜਦੇ ਥਕਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

सिध साधिक नावै नो सभि खोजदे थकि रहे लिव लाइ ॥

Sidh saadhik naavai no sabhi khojade thaki rahe liv laai ||

All the Siddhas, spiritual masters and seekers search for the Name; they have grown weary of concentrating and focusing their attention.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर किनै न पाइओ गुरमुखि मिलै मिलाइ ॥

Without the True Guru, no one finds the Name; the Gurmukhs unite in Union with the Lord.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖਾਣੁ ਸਭੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਧਿਗੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਧਿਗੁ ਕਰਮਾਤਿ ॥

बिनु नावै पैनणु खाणु सभु बादि है धिगु सिधी धिगु करमाति ॥

Binu naavai paina(nn)u khaa(nn)u sabhu baadi hai dhigu sidhee dhigu karamaati ||

Without the Name, all food and clothes are worthless; cursed is such spirituality, and cursed are such miraculous powers.

ਸਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਸਾ ਕਰਮਾਤਿ ਹੈ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

सा सिधि सा करमाति है अचिंतु करे जिसु दाति ॥

Saa sidhi saa karamaati hai achinttu kare jisu daati ||

That alone is spirituality, and that alone is miraculous power, which the Carefree Lord spontaneously bestows.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਏਹਾ ਸਿਧਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਮਾਤਿ ॥੨॥

नानक गुरमुखि हरि नामु मनि वसै एहा सिधि एहा करमाति ॥२॥

Naanak guramukhi hari naamu mani vasai ehaa sidhi ehaa karamaati ||2||

O Nanak, the Lord's Name abides in the mind of the Gurmukh; this is spirituality, and this is miraculous power. ||2||

ਪੜਣਾ ਗੁੜਣਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ॥

पड़णा गुड़णा संसार की कार है अंदरि त्रिसना विकारु ॥

Pa(rr)a(nn)aa gu(rr)a(nn)aa sanssaar kee kaar hai anddari trisanaa vikaaru ||

Reading and studying are just worldly pursuits, if there is thirst and corruption within.

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭਿ ਪੜਿ ਥਕੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥

हउमै विचि सभि पड़ि थके दूजै भाइ खुआरु ॥

Haumai vichi sabhi pa(rr)i thake doojai bhaai khuaaru ||

Reading in egotism, all have grown weary; through the love of duality, they are ruined.

ਸੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

सो पड़िआ सो पंडितु बीना गुर सबदि करे वीचारु ॥

So pa(rr)iaa so pandditu beenaa gur sabadi kare veechaaru ||

He alone is educated, and he alone is a wise Pandit, who contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਅੰਦਰੁ ਖੋਜੈ ਤਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

अंदरु खोजै ततु लहै पाए मोख दुआरु ॥

Anddaru khojai tatu lahai paae mokh duaaru ||

He searches within himself, and finds the true essence; he finds the Door of Salvation.

ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

गुण निधानु हरि पाइआ सहजि करे वीचारु ॥

Gu(nn) nidhaanu hari paaiaa sahaji kare veechaaru ||

He finds the Lord, the treasure of excellence, and peacefully contemplates Him.

ਧੰਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

धंनु वापारी नानका जिसु गुरमुखि नामु अधारु ॥१॥

Dhannu vaapaaree naanakaa jisu guramukhi naamu adhaaru ||1||

Blessed is the trader, O Nanak, who, as Gurmukh, takes the Name as his only Support. ||1||

ਵਿਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਿਝਈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

विणु मनु मारे कोइ न सिझई वेखहु को लिव लाइ ॥

Vi(nn)u manu maare koi na sijhaee vekhahu ko liv laai ||

Without conquering his mind, no one can be successful. See this, and concentrate on it.

ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ਤੀਰਥੀ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

भेखधारी तीरथी भवि थके ना एहु मनु मारिआ जाइ ॥

Bhekhadhaaree teerathee bhavi thake naa ehu manu maariaa jaai ||

The wandering holy men are tired of making pilgrimages to sacred shrines; they have not been able to conquer their minds.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

गुरमुखि एहु मनु जीवतु मरै सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥

Guramukhi ehu manu jeevatu marai sachi rahai liv laai ||

The Gurmukh has conquered his mind, and he remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਇਉ ਉਤਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

नानक इसु मन की मलु इउ उतरै हउमै सबदि जलाइ ॥२॥

Naanak isu man kee malu iu utarai haumai sabadi jalaai ||2||

O Nanak, this is how the filth of the mind is removed; the Word of the Shabad burns away the ego. ||2||

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋਆ ਸਿਆਹੁ ॥

जनम जनम की इसु मन कउ मलु लागी काला होआ सिआहु ॥

Janam janam kee isu man kau malu laagee kaalaa hoaa siaahu ||

The filth of countless incarnations sticks to this mind; it has become pitch black.

ਖੰਨਲੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਉਜਲੀ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣਿ ਪਾਹੁ ॥

खंनली धोती उजली न होवई जे सउ धोवणि पाहु ॥

Khannalee dhotee ujalee na hovaee je sau dhova(nn)i paahu ||

The oily rag cannot be cleaned by merely washing it, even if it is washed a hundred times.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਉਲਟੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਤਿ ਬਦਲਾਹੁ ॥

गुर परसादी जीवतु मरै उलटी होवै मति बदलाहु ॥

Gur parasaadee jeevatu marai ulatee hovai mati badalaahu ||

By Guru's Grace, one remains dead while yet alive; his intellect is transformed, and he becomes detached from the world.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਹੁ ॥੧॥

नानक मैलु न लगई ना फिरि जोनी पाहु ॥१॥

Naanak mailu na lagaee naa phiri jonee paahu ||1||

O Nanak, no filth sticks to him, and he does not fall into the womb again. ||1||

ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗੀ ਕਲਿ ਕਾਲੀ ਕਾਂਢੀ ਇਕ ਉਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

चहु जुगी कलि काली कांढी इक उतम पदवी इसु जुग माहि ॥

Chahu jugee kali kaalee kaandhee ik utam padavee isu jug maahi ||

Kali Yuga is called the Dark Age, but the most sublime state is attained in this age.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

गुरमुखि हरि कीरति फलु पाईऐ जिन कउ हरि लिखि पाहि ॥

Guramukhi hari keerati phalu paaeeai jin kau hari likhi paahi ||

The Gurmukh obtains the fruit, the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises; this is his destiny, ordained by the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

नानक गुर परसादी अनदिनु भगति हरि उचरहि हरि भगती माहि समाहि ॥२॥

Naanak gur parasaadee anadinu bhagati hari ucharahi hari bhagatee maahi samaahi ||2||

O Nanak, by Guru's Grace, he worships the Lord night and day; he chants the Lord's Name, and remains absorbed in the Lord's devotional worship. ||2||

ਰੇ ਜਨ ਉਥਾਰੈ ਦਬਿਓਹੁ ਸੁਤਿਆ ਗਈ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥

रे जन उथारै दबिओहु सुतिआ गई विहाइ ॥

Re jan uthaarai dabiohu sutiaa gaee vihaai ||

O man, you have been tormented by a nightmare, and you have passed your life in sleep.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਗਿਓ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਚਾਉ ॥

सतिगुर का सबदु सुणि न जागिओ अंतरि न उपजिओ चाउ ॥

Satigur kaa sabadu su(nn)i na jaagio anttari na upajio chaau ||

You did not wake to hear the Word of the True Guru's Shabad; you have no inspiration within yourself.

ਸਰੀਰੁ ਜਲਉ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਰ ਨ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

सरीरु जलउ गुण बाहरा जो गुर कार न कमाइ ॥

Sareeru jalau gu(nn) baaharaa jo gur kaar na kamaai ||

That body burns, which has no virtue, and which does not serve the Guru.

ਜਗਤੁ ਜਲੰਦਾ ਡਿਠੁ ਮੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

जगतु जलंदा डिठु मै हउमै दूजै भाइ ॥

Jagatu jalanddaa dithu mai haumai doojai bhaai ||

I have seen that the world is burning, in egotism and the love of duality.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥

नानक गुर सरणाई उबरे सचु मनि सबदि धिआइ ॥१॥

Naanak gur sara(nn)aaee ubare sachu mani sabadi dhiaai ||1||

O Nanak, those who seek the Guru's Sanctuary are saved; within their minds, they meditate on the True Word of the Shabad. ||1||

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਈ ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

सबदि रते हउमै गई सोभावंती नारि ॥

Sabadi rate haumai gaee sobhaavanttee naari ||

Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, the soul-bride is rid of egotism, and she is glorified.

ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਚਲੈ ਤਾ ਬਨਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

पिर कै भाणै सदा चलै ता बनिआ सीगारु ॥

Pir kai bhaa(nn)ai sadaa chalai taa baniaa seegaaru ||

If she walks steadily in the way of His Will, then she is adorned with decorations.

ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਦਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

सेज सुहावी सदा पिरु रावै हरि वरु पाइआ नारि ॥

Sej suhaavee sadaa piru raavai hari varu paaiaa naari ||

Her couch becomes beautiful, and she constantly enjoys her Husband Lord; she obtains the Lord as her Husband.

ਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਦੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

ना हरि मरै न कदे दुखु लागै सदा सुहागणि नारि ॥

Naa hari marai na kade dukhu laagai sadaa suhaaga(nn)i naari ||

The Lord does not die, and she never suffers pain; she is a happy soul-bride forever.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥

नानक हरि प्रभ मेलि लई गुर कै हेति पिआरि ॥२॥

Naanak hari prbh meli laee gur kai heti piaari ||2||

O Nanak, the Lord God unites her with Himself; she enshrines love and affection for the Guru. ||2||

गुर सेवा ते सुखु ऊपजै फिरि दुखु न लगै आइ ॥

Gur sevaa te sukhu upajai phiri dukhu na lagai aai ||

Serving the Guru, peace is produced, and then, one does not suffer in pain.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਕਾਲੈ ਕਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਇ ॥

जमणु मरणा मिटि गइआ कालै का किछु न बसाइ ॥

Jamma(nn)u mara(nn)aa miti gaiaa kaalai kaa kichhu na basaai ||

The cycle of birth and death is brought to an end, and death has no power over at all.

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਚੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

हरि सेती मनु रवि रहिआ सचे रहिआ समाइ ॥

Hari setee manu ravi rahiaa sache rahiaa samaai ||

His mind is imbued with the Lord, and he remains merged in the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਿੰਨ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਚਲਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक हउ बलिहारी तिंन कउ जो चलनि सतिगुर भाइ ॥१॥

Naanak hau balihaaree tinn kau jo chalani satigur bhaai ||1||

O Nanak, I am a sacrifice to those who walk in the Way of the True Guru's Will. ||1||

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਧੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰੈ ਸੀਗਾਰ ॥

Binu sabadai sudhu na hovaee je anek karai seegaar ||

Without the Word of the Shabad, purity is not obtained, even though the soul-bride may adorn herself with all sorts of decorations.

ਪਿਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

पिर की सार न जाणई दूजै भाइ पिआरु ॥

Pir kee saar na jaa(nn)aee doojai bhaai piaaru ||

She does not know the value of her Husband Lord; she is attached to the love of duality.

ਸਾ ਕੁਸੁਧ ਸਾ ਕੁਲਖਣੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਰੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੁਨਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

सा कुसुध सा कुलखणी नानक नारी विचि कुनारि ॥२॥

Saa kusudh saa kulakha(nn)ee naanak naaree vichi kunaari ||2||

She is impure, and ill-mannered, O Nanak; among women, she is the most evil woman. ||2||

ए मन हरि जी धिआइ तू इक मनि इक चिति भाइ ॥

E man hari jee dhiaai too ik mani ik chiti bhaai ||

O mind, meditate on the Dear Lord, with single-minded conscious concentration.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ ॥

हरि कीआ सदा सदा वडिआईआ देइ न पछोताइ ॥

Hari keeaa sadaa sadaa vadiaaeeaa dei na pachhotaai ||

The glorious greatness of the Lord shall last forever and ever; He never regrets what He gives.

ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

हउ हरि कै सद बलिहारणै जितु सेविऐ सुखु पाइ ॥

Hau hari kai sad balihaara(nn)ai jitu seviai sukhu paai ||

I am forever a sacrifice to the Lord; serving Him, peace is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक गुरमुखि मिलि रहै हउमै सबदि जलाइ ॥१॥

Naanak guramukhi mili rahai haumai sabadi jalaai ||1||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh remains merged with the Lord; he burns away his ego through the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

आपे सेवा लाइअनु आपे बखस करेइ ॥

Aape sevaa laaianu aape bakhas karei ||

He Himself enjoins us to serve Him, and He Himself blesses us with forgiveness.

ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਮਾ ਪਿਉ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

सभना का मा पिउ आपि है आपे सार करेइ ॥

Sabhanaa kaa maa piu aapi hai aape saar karei ||

He Himself is the father and mother of all; He Himself cares for us.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

नानक नामु धिआइनि तिन निज घरि वासु है जुगु जुगु सोभा होइ ॥२॥

Naanak naamu dhiaaini tin nij ghari vaasu hai jugu jugu sobhaa hoi ||2||

O Nanak, those who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abide in the home of their inner being; they are honored throughout the ages. ||2||

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਨ ਨਿਖੁਟੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

इहु धनु अखुटु न निखुटै न जाइ ॥

Ihu dhanu akhutu na nikhutai na jaai ||

This wealth is inexhaustible. It shall never be exhausted, and it shall never be lost.

ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥

पूरै सतिगुरि दीआ दिखाइ ॥

Poorai satiguri deeaa dikhaai ||

The Perfect True Guru has revealed it to me.

ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

अपुने सतिगुर कउ सद बलि जाई ॥

Apune satigur kau sad bali jaaee ||

I am forever a sacrifice to my True Guru.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥੧॥

गुर किरपा ते हरि मंनि वसाई ॥१॥

Gur kirapaa te hari manni vasaaee ||1||

By Guru's Grace, I have enshrined the Lord within my mind. ||1||


ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

से धनवंत हरि नामि लिव लाइ ॥

Se dhanavantt hari naami liv laai ||

They alone are wealthy, who lovingly attune themselves to the Lord's Name.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरि पूरै हरि धनु परगासिआ हरि किरपा ते वसै मनि आइ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Guri poorai hari dhanu paragaasiaa hari kirapaa te vasai mani aai || rahaau ||

The Perfect Guru has revealed to me the Lord's treasure; by the Lord's Grace, it has come to abide in my mind. || Pause ||


ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕਾਟਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

अवगुण काटि गुण रिदै समाइ ॥

Avagu(nn) kaati gu(nn) ridai samaai ||

He is rid of his demerits, and his heart is permeated with merit and virtue.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

पूरे गुर कै सहजि सुभाइ ॥

Poore gur kai sahaji subhaai ||

By Guru's Grace, he naturally dwells in celestial peace.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

पूरे गुर की साची बाणी ॥

Poore gur kee saachee baa(nn)ee ||

True is the Word of the Perfect Guru's Bani.

ਸੁਖ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੨॥

सुख मन अंतरि सहजि समाणी ॥२॥

Sukh man anttari sahaji samaa(nn)ee ||2||

They bring peace to the mind, and celestial peace is absorbed within. ||2||


ਏਕੁ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਜਨ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥

एकु अचरजु जन देखहु भाई ॥

Eku acharaju jan dekhahu bhaaee ||

O my humble Siblings of Destiny, behold this strange and wonderful thing:

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥

दुबिधा मारि हरि मंनि वसाई ॥

Dubidhaa maari hari manni vasaaee ||

Duality is overcome, and the Lord dwells within his mind.

ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

नामु अमोलकु न पाइआ जाइ ॥

Naamu amolaku na paaiaa jaai ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is priceless; it cannot be taken.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੩॥

गुर परसादि वसै मनि आइ ॥३॥

Gur parasaadi vasai mani aai ||3||

By Guru's Grace, it comes to abide in the mind. ||3||


ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਸੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥

सभ महि वसै प्रभु एको सोइ ॥

Sabh mahi vasai prbhu eko soi ||

He is the One God, abiding within all.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुरमती घटि परगटु होइ ॥

Guramatee ghati paragatu hoi ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, He is revealed in the heart.

ਸਹਜੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥

सहजे जिनि प्रभु जाणि पछाणिआ ॥

Sahaje jini prbhu jaa(nn)i pachhaa(nn)iaa ||

One who intuitively knows and realizes God,

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥

नानक नामु मिलै मनु मानिआ ॥४॥१॥

Naanak naamu milai manu maaniaa ||4||1||

O Nanak, obtains the Naam; his mind is pleased and appeased. ||4||1||

Dhanaasaree, Third Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

हरि नामु धनु निरमलु अति अपारा ॥

Hari naamu dhanu niramalu ati apaaraa ||

The wealth of the Lord's Name is immaculate, and absolutely infinite.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

गुर कै सबदि भरे भंडारा ॥

Gur kai sabadi bhare bhanddaaraa ||

The Word of the Guru's Shabad is over-flowing with treasure.

ਨਾਮ ਧਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

नाम धन बिनु होर सभ बिखु जाणु ॥

Naam dhan binu hor sabh bikhu jaa(nn)u ||

Know that, except for the wealth of the Name, all other wealth is poison.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਲੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥

माइआ मोहि जलै अभिमानु ॥१॥

Maaiaa mohi jalai abhimaanu ||1||

The egotistical people are burning in their attachment to Maya. ||1||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

गुरमुखि हरि रसु चाखै कोइ ॥

Guramukhi hari rasu chaakhai koi ||

How rare is that Gurmukh who tastes the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तिसु सदा अनंदु होवै दिनु राती पूरै भागि परापति होइ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Tisu sadaa ananddu hovai dinu raatee poorai bhaagi paraapati hoi || rahaau ||

He is always in bliss, day and night; through perfect good destiny, he obtains the Name. || Pause ||


ਸਬਦੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਇ ॥

सबदु दीपकु वरतै तिहु लोइ ॥

Sabadu deepaku varatai tihu loi ||

The Word of the Shabad is a lamp, illuminating the three worlds.

ਜੋ ਚਾਖੈ ਸੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

जो चाखै सो निरमलु होइ ॥

Jo chaakhai so niramalu hoi ||

One who tastes it, becomes immaculate.

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਇ ॥

निरमल नामि हउमै मलु धोइ ॥

Niramal naami haumai malu dhoi ||

The immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord, washes off the filth of ego.

ਸਾਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

साची भगति सदा सुखु होइ ॥२॥

Saachee bhagati sadaa sukhu hoi ||2||

True devotional worship brings lasting peace. ||2||


ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥

जिनि हरि रसु चाखिआ सो हरि जनु लोगु ॥

Jini hari rasu chaakhiaa so hari janu logu ||

One who tastes the sublime essence of the Lord is the Lord's humble servant.

ਤਿਸੁ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

तिसु सदा हरखु नाही कदे सोगु ॥

Tisu sadaa harakhu naahee kade sogu ||

He is forever happy; he is never sad.

ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਅਵਰਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥

आपि मुकतु अवरा मुकतु करावै ॥

Aapi mukatu avaraa mukatu karaavai ||

He himself is liberated, and he liberates others as well.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

हरि नामु जपै हरि ते सुखु पावै ॥३॥

Hari naamu japai hari te sukhu paavai ||3||

He chants the Lord's Name, and through the Lord, he finds peace. ||3||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੁਈ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर सभ मुई बिललाइ ॥

Binu satigur sabh muee bilalaai ||

Without the True Guru, everyone dies, crying out in pain.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਦਾਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

अनदिनु दाझहि साति न पाइ ॥

Anadinu daajhahi saati na paai ||

Night and day, they burn, and find no peace.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਭੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

सतिगुरु मिलै सभु त्रिसन बुझाए ॥

Satiguru milai sabhu trisan bujhaae ||

But meeting the True Guru, all thirst is quenched.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक नामि सांति सुखु पाए ॥४॥२॥

Naanak naami saanti sukhu paae ||4||2||

O Nanak, through the Naam, one finds peace and tranquility. ||4||2||

ਸਦਾ ਧਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥

सदा धनु अंतरि नामु समाले ॥

Sadaa dhanu anttari naamu samaale ||

Gather in and cherish forever the wealth of the Lord's Name, deep within;

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੇ ॥

जीअ जंत जिनहि प्रतिपाले ॥

Jeea jantt jinahi prtipaale ||

He cherishes and nurtures all beings and creatures.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਪਾਏ ॥

मुकति पदारथु तिन कउ पाए ॥

Mukati padaarathu tin kau paae ||

They alone obtain the treasure of Liberation,

ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੧॥

हरि कै नामि रते लिव लाए ॥१॥

Hari kai naami rate liv laae ||1||

Who are lovingly imbued with, and focused on the Lord's Name. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

गुर सेवा ते हरि नामु धनु पावै ॥

Gur sevaa te hari naamu dhanu paavai ||

Serving the Guru, one obtains the wealth of the Lord's Name.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंतरि परगासु हरि नामु धिआवै ॥ रहाउ ॥

Anttari paragaasu hari naamu dhiaavai || rahaau ||

He is illumined and enlightened within, and he meditates on the Lord's Name. || Pause ||


ਇਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਗੂੜਾ ਧਨ ਪਿਰ ਹੋਇ ॥

इहु हरि रंगु गूड़ा धन पिर होइ ॥

Ihu hari ranggu goo(rr)aa dhan pir hoi ||

This love for the Lord is like the love of the bride for her husband.

ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

सांति सीगारु रावे प्रभु सोइ ॥

Saanti seegaaru raave prbhu soi ||

God ravishes and enjoys the soul-bride who is adorned with peace and tranquility.

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥

हउमै विचि प्रभु कोइ न पाए ॥

Haumai vichi prbhu koi na paae ||

No one finds God through egotism.

ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੨॥

मूलहु भुला जनमु गवाए ॥२॥

Moolahu bhulaa janamu gavaae ||2||

Wandering away from the Primal Lord, the root of all, one wastes his life in vain. ||2||


ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖੁ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

गुर ते साति सहज सुखु बाणी ॥

Gur te saati sahaj sukhu baa(nn)ee ||

Tranquility, celestial peace, pleasure and the Word of His Bani come from the Guru.

ਸੇਵਾ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

सेवा साची नामि समाणी ॥

Sevaa saachee naami samaa(nn)ee ||

True is that service, which leads one to merge in the Naam.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਏ ॥

सबदि मिलै प्रीतमु सदा धिआए ॥

Sabadi milai preetamu sadaa dhiaae ||

Blessed with the Word of the Shabad, he meditates forever on the Lord, the Beloved.

ਸਾਚ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

साच नामि वडिआई पाए ॥३॥

Saach naami vadiaaee paae ||3||

Through the True Name, glorious greatness is obtained. ||3||


ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੋਇ ॥

आपे करता जुगि जुगि सोइ ॥

Aape karataa jugi jugi soi ||

The Creator Himself abides throughout the ages.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮੇਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

नदरि करे मेलावा होइ ॥

Nadari kare melaavaa hoi ||

If He casts His Glance of Grace, then we meet Him.

ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

गुरबाणी ते हरि मंनि वसाए ॥

Gurabaa(nn)ee te hari manni vasaae ||

Through the Word of Gurbani, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥

नानक साचि रते प्रभि आपि मिलाए ॥४॥३॥

Naanak saachi rate prbhi aapi milaae ||4||3||

O Nanak, God unites with Himself those who are imbued with Truth. ||4||3||


ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਤੀਜਾ ॥

धनासरी महला ३ तीजा ॥

Dhanaasaree mahalaa 3 teejaa ||

Dhanaasaree, Third Mehl:

ਜਗੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਮੈਲੋ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥

जगु मैला मैलो होइ जाइ ॥

Jagu mailaa mailo hoi jaai ||

The world is polluted, and those in the world become polluted as well.

ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇ ॥

आवै जाइ दूजै लोभाइ ॥

Aavai jaai doojai lobhaai ||

In attachment to duality, it comes and goes.

ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਭ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ॥

दूजै भाइ सभ परज विगोई ॥

Doojai bhaai sabh paraj vigoee ||

This love of duality has ruined the entire world.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥

मनमुखि चोटा खाइ अपुनी पति खोई ॥१॥

Manamukhi chotaa khaai apunee pati khoee ||1||

The self-willed manmukh suffers punishment, and forfeits his honor. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुर सेवा ते जनु निरमलु होइ ॥

Gur sevaa te janu niramalu hoi ||

Serving the Guru, one becomes immaculate.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਪਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंतरि नामु वसै पति ऊतम होइ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Anttari naamu vasai pati utam hoi || rahaau ||

He enshrines the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within, and his state becomes exalted. || Pause ||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥

गुरमुखि उबरे हरि सरणाई ॥

Guramukhi ubare hari sara(nn)aaee ||

The Gurmukhs are saved, taking to the Lord's Sanctuary.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਈ ॥

राम नामि राते भगति द्रिड़ाई ॥

Raam naami raate bhagati dri(rr)aaee ||

Attuned to the Lord's Name, they commit themselves to devotional worship.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਨੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪਾਏ ॥

भगति करे जनु वडिआई पाए ॥

Bhagati kare janu vadiaaee paae ||

The Lord's humble servant performs devotional worship, and is blessed with greatness.

ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੨॥

साचि रते सुख सहजि समाए ॥२॥

Saachi rate sukh sahaji samaae ||2||

Attuned to Truth, he is absorbed in celestial peace. ||2||


ਸਾਚੇ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

साचे का गाहकु विरला को जाणु ॥

Saache kaa gaahaku viralaa ko jaa(nn)u ||

Know that one who purchases the True Name is very rare.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

गुर कै सबदि आपु पछाणु ॥

Gur kai sabadi aapu pachhaa(nn)u ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he comes to understand himself.

ਸਾਚੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

साची रासि साचा वापारु ॥

Saachee raasi saachaa vaapaaru ||

True is his capital, and true is his trade.

ਸੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੩॥

सो धंनु पुरखु जिसु नामि पिआरु ॥३॥

So dhannu purakhu jisu naami piaaru ||3||

Blessed is that person, who loves the Naam. ||3||


ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਇਕਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਏ ॥

तिनि प्रभि साचै इकि सचि लाए ॥

Tini prbhi saachai iki sachi laae ||

God, the True Lord, has attached some to His True Name.

ਊਤਮ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥

ऊतम बाणी सबदु सुणाए ॥

Utam baa(nn)ee sabadu su(nn)aae ||

They listen to the most sublime Word of His Bani, and the Word of His Shabad.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

प्रभ साचे की साची कार ॥

Prbh saache kee saachee kaar ||

True is service to the True Lord God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੪॥

नानक नामि सवारणहार ॥४॥४॥

Naanak naami savaara(nn)ahaar ||4||4||

O Nanak, the Naam is the Embellisher. ||4||4||

I am a sacrifice to those who serve the Lord.

ਤਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਉ ॥

तिन हिरदै साचु सचा मुखि नाउ ॥

Tin hiradai saachu sachaa mukhi naau ||

The Truth is in their hearts, and the True Name is on their lips.

ਸਾਚੋ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

साचो साचु समालिहु दुखु जाइ ॥

Saacho saachu samaalihu dukhu jaai ||

Dwelling upon the Truest of the True, their pains are dispelled.

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੧॥

साचै सबदि वसै मनि आइ ॥१॥

Saachai sabadi vasai mani aai ||1||

Through the True Word of the Shabad, the Lord comes to dwell in their minds. ||1||


ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

गुरबाणी सुणि मैलु गवाए ॥

Gurabaa(nn)ee su(nn)i mailu gavaae ||

Listening to the Word of Gurbani, filth is washed off,

ਸਹਜੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सहजे हरि नामु मंनि वसाए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sahaje hari naamu manni vasaae ||1|| rahaau ||

And they naturally enshrine the Lord's Name in their minds. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

कूड़ु कुसतु त्रिसना अगनि बुझाए ॥

Koo(rr)u kusatu trisanaa agani bujhaae ||

One who conquers fraud, deceit and the fire of desire

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

अंतरि सांति सहजि सुखु पाए ॥

Anttari saanti sahaji sukhu paae ||

Finds tranquility, peace and pleasure within.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਤਾ ਆਪੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

गुर कै भाणै चलै ता आपु जाइ ॥

Gur kai bhaa(nn)ai chalai taa aapu jaai ||

If one walks in harmony with the Guru's Will, he eliminates his self-conceit.

ਸਾਚੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥

साचु महलु पाए हरि गुण गाइ ॥२॥

Saachu mahalu paae hari gu(nn) gaai ||2||

He finds the True Mansion of the Lord's Presence, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||


ਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

न सबदु बूझै न जाणै बाणी ॥

Na sabadu boojhai na jaa(nn)ai baa(nn)ee ||

The blind, self-willed manmukh does not understand the Shabad; he does not know the Word of the Guru's Bani,

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥

मनमुखि अंधे दुखि विहाणी ॥

Manamukhi anddhe dukhi vihaa(nn)ee ||

And so he passes his life in misery.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

सतिगुरु भेटे ता सुखु पाए ॥

Satiguru bhete taa sukhu paae ||

But if he meets the True Guru, then he finds peace,

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥੩॥

हउमै विचहु ठाकि रहाए ॥३॥

Haumai vichahu thaaki rahaae ||3||

And the ego within is silenced. ||3||


ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਦਾਤਾ ਇਕੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

किस नो कहीऐ दाता इकु सोइ ॥

Kis no kaheeai daataa iku soi ||

Who else should I speak to? The One Lord is the Giver of all.

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

किरपा करे सबदि मिलावा होइ ॥

Kirapaa kare sabadi milaavaa hoi ||

When He grants His Grace, then we obtain the Word of the Shabad.

ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥

मिलि प्रीतम साचे गुण गावा ॥

Mili preetam saache gu(nn) gaavaa ||

Meeting with my Beloved, I sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਭਾਵਾ ॥੪॥੫॥

नानक साचे साचा भावा ॥४॥५॥

Naanak saache saachaa bhaavaa ||4||5||

O Nanak, becoming truthful, I have become pleasing to the True Lord. ||4||5||

ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਧਾਤੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

मनु मरै धातु मरि जाइ ॥

Manu marai dhaatu mari jaai ||

When the mind is conquered, its turbulent wanderings are stopped.

ਬਿਨੁ ਮਨ ਮੂਏ ਕੈਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

बिनु मन मूए कैसे हरि पाइ ॥

Binu man mooe kaise hari paai ||

Without conquering the mind, how can the Lord be found?

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਰੈ ਦਾਰੂ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

इहु मनु मरै दारू जाणै कोइ ॥

Ihu manu marai daaroo jaa(nn)ai koi ||

Rare is the one who knows the medicine to conquer the mind.

ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

मनु सबदि मरै बूझै जनु सोइ ॥१॥

Manu sabadi marai boojhai janu soi ||1||

The mind is conquered through the Word of the Shabad; this is known to the Lord's humble servant. ||1||


ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

जिस नो बखसे हरि दे वडिआई ॥

Jis no bakhase hari de vadiaaee ||

The Lord forgives him, and blesses him with glory.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादि वसै मनि आई ॥ रहाउ ॥

Gur parasaadi vasai mani aaee || rahaau ||

By Guru's Grace, the Lord comes to dwell in the mind. || Pause ||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

गुरमुखि करणी कार कमावै ॥

Guramukhi kara(nn)ee kaar kamaavai ||

The Gurmukh does good deeds,

ਤਾ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

ता इसु मन की सोझी पावै ॥

Taa isu man kee sojhee paavai ||

And so, he comes to understand this mind.

ਮਨੁ ਮੈ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਗਲ ਮਿਕਦਾਰਾ ॥

मनु मै मतु मैगल मिकदारा ॥

Manu mai matu maigal mikadaaraa ||

The mind is intoxicated, like the elephant with wine.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

गुरु अंकसु मारि जीवालणहारा ॥२॥

Guru ankkasu maari jeevaala(nn)ahaaraa ||2||

The Guru places the harness upon it, and rejuvenates it. ||2||


ਮਨੁ ਅਸਾਧੁ ਸਾਧੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

मनु असाधु साधै जनु कोई ॥

Manu asaadhu saadhai janu koee ||

The mind is undisciplined; only a rare few can discipline it.

ਅਚਰੁ ਚਰੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

अचरु चरै ता निरमलु होई ॥

Acharu charai taa niramalu hoee ||

If some one controls the difficult mind, then he becomes immaculate.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਇਆ ਸਵਾਰਿ ॥

गुरमुखि इहु मनु लइआ सवारि ॥

Guramukhi ihu manu laiaa savaari ||

As Gurmukh, his mind is embellished.

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥੩॥

हउमै विचहु तजै विकार ॥३॥

Haumai vichahu tajai vikaar ||3||

Egotism and corruption are eradicated from within. ||3||


ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਰਖਿਅਨੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

जो धुरि रखिअनु मेलि मिलाइ ॥

Jo dhuri rakhianu meli milaai ||

Those whom the Primal Lord keeps united in His Union,

ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

कदे न विछुड़हि सबदि समाइ ॥

Kade na vichhu(rr)ahi sabadi samaai ||

Shall never be separated from Him; they are merged in the Word of the Shabad.

ਆਪਣੀ ਕਲਾ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

आपणी कला आपे प्रभु जाणै ॥

Aapa(nn)ee kalaa aape prbhu jaa(nn)ai ||

Only God Himself knows His own power.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੪॥੬॥

नानक गुरमुखि नामु पछाणै ॥४॥६॥

Naanak guramukhi naamu pachhaa(nn)ai ||4||6||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh realizes the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||6||

Dhanaasaree, Third Mehl:

ਕਾਚਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥

काचा धनु संचहि मूरख गावार ॥

Kaachaa dhanu sancchahi moorakh gaavaar ||

The ignorant fools amass false wealth.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਅੰਧ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥

मनमुख भूले अंध गावार ॥

Manamukh bhoole anddh gaavaar ||

The blind, foolish, self-willed manmukhs have gone astray.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੈ ਧਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

बिखिआ कै धनि सदा दुखु होइ ॥

Bikhiaa kai dhani sadaa dukhu hoi ||

Poisonous wealth brings constant pain.

ਨਾ ਸਾਥਿ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

ना साथि जाइ न परापति होइ ॥१॥

Naa saathi jaai na paraapati hoi ||1||

It will not go with you, and it will not yield any profit. ||1||


ਸਾਚਾ ਧਨੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਏ ॥

साचा धनु गुरमती पाए ॥

Saachaa dhanu guramatee paae ||

True wealth is obtained through the Guru's Teachings.

ਕਾਚਾ ਧਨੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਏ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

काचा धनु फुनि आवै जाए ॥ रहाउ ॥

Kaachaa dhanu phuni aavai jaae || rahaau ||

False wealth continues coming and going. || Pause ||


ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥

मनमुखि भूले सभि मरहि गवार ॥

Manamukhi bhoole sabhi marahi gavaar ||

The foolish self-willed manmukhs all go astray and die.

ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਨ ਉਰਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

भवजलि डूबे न उरवारि न पारि ॥

Bhavajali doobe na uravaari na paari ||

They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, and they cannot reach either this shore, or the one beyond.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ॥

सतिगुरु भेटे पूरै भागि ॥

Satiguru bhete poorai bhaagi ||

But by perfect destiny, they meet the True Guru;

ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ ॥੨॥

साचि रते अहिनिसि बैरागि ॥२॥

Saachi rate ahinisi bairaagi ||2||

Imbued with the True Name, day and night, they remain detached from the world. ||2||


ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

चहु जुग महि अम्रितु साची बाणी ॥

Chahu jug mahi ammmritu saachee baa(nn)ee ||

Throughout the four ages, the True Bani of His Word is Ambrosial Nectar.

ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

पूरै भागि हरि नामि समाणी ॥

Poorai bhaagi hari naami samaa(nn)ee ||

By perfect destiny, one is absorbed in the True Name.

ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਤਰਸਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਇ ॥

सिध साधिक तरसहि सभि लोइ ॥

Sidh saadhik tarasahi sabhi loi ||

The Siddhas, the seekers and all men long for the Name.

ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥

पूरै भागि परापति होइ ॥३॥

Poorai bhaagi paraapati hoi ||3||

It is obtained only by perfect destiny. ||3||


ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

सभु किछु साचा साचा है सोइ ॥

Sabhu kichhu saachaa saachaa hai soi ||

The True Lord is everything; He is True.

ਊਤਮ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

ऊतम ब्रहमु पछाणै कोइ ॥

Utam brhamu pachhaa(nn)ai koi ||

Only a few realize the exalted Lord God.

ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਆਪਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥

सचु साचा सचु आपि द्रिड़ाए ॥

Sachu saachaa sachu aapi dri(rr)aae ||

He is the Truest of the True; He Himself implants the True Name within.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਏ ॥੪॥੭॥

नानक आपे वेखै आपे सचि लाए ॥४॥७॥

Naanak aape vekhai aape sachi laae ||4||7||

O Nanak, the Lord Himself sees all; He Himself links us to the Truth. ||4||7||

Naavai kee keemati miti kahee na jaai ||

The value and worth of the Lord's Name cannot be described.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਿਨ ਇਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

से जन धंनु जिन इक नामि लिव लाइ ॥

Se jan dhannu jin ik naami liv laai ||

Blessed are those humble beings, who lovingly focus their minds on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

गुरमति साची साचा वीचारु ॥

Guramati saachee saachaa veechaaru ||

True are the Guru's Teachings, and True is contemplative meditation.

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਦੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

आपे बखसे दे वीचारु ॥१॥

Aape bakhase de veechaaru ||1||

God Himself forgives, and bestows contemplative meditation. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥

हरि नामु अचरजु प्रभु आपि सुणाए ॥

Hari naamu acharaju prbhu aapi su(nn)aae ||

The Lord's Name is wonderful! God Himself imparts it.

ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कली काल विचि गुरमुखि पाए ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kalee kaal vichi guramukhi paae ||1|| rahaau ||

In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Gurmukhs obtain it. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

हम मूरख मूरख मन माहि ॥

Ham moorakh moorakh man maahi ||

We are ignorant; ignorance fills our minds.

ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

हउमै विचि सभ कार कमाहि ॥

Haumai vichi sabh kaar kamaahi ||

We do all our deeds in ego.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹੰਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

गुर परसादी हंउमै जाइ ॥

Gur parasaadee hannumai jaai ||

By Guru's Grace, egotism is eradicated.

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

आपे बखसे लए मिलाइ ॥२॥

Aape bakhase lae milaai ||2||

Forgiving us, the Lord blends us with Himself. ||2||


ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

बिखिआ का धनु बहुतु अभिमानु ॥

Bikhiaa kaa dhanu bahutu abhimaanu ||

Poisonous wealth gives rise to great arrogance.

ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ਡੂਬੈ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

अहंकारि डूबै न पावै मानु ॥

Ahankkaari doobai na paavai maanu ||

Drowning in egotism, no one is honored.

ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

आपु छोडि सदा सुखु होई ॥

Aapu chhodi sadaa sukhu hoee ||

Forsaking self-conceit, one finds lasting peace.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥

गुरमति सालाही सचु सोई ॥३॥

Guramati saalaahee sachu soee ||3||

Under Guru's Instruction, he praises the True Lord. ||3||


ਆਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

आपे साजे करता सोइ ॥

Aape saaje karataa soi ||

The Creator Lord Himself fashions all.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

तिसु बिनु दूजा अवरु न कोइ ॥

Tisu binu doojaa avaru na koi ||

Without Him, there is no other at all.

ਜਿਸੁ ਸਚਿ ਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਲਾਗੈ ॥

जिसु सचि लाए सोई लागै ॥

Jisu sachi laae soee laagai ||

He alone is attached to Truth, whom the Lord Himself so attaches.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੪॥੮॥

नानक नामि सदा सुखु आगै ॥४॥८॥

Naanak naami sadaa sukhu aagai ||4||8||

O Nanak, through the Naam, lasting peace is attained in the hereafter. ||4||8||

ਹਮ ਭੀਖਕ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੂ ਨਿਜ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਦਾਤਾ ॥

हम भीखक भेखारी तेरे तू निज पति है दाता ॥

Ham bheekhak bhekhaaree tere too nij pati hai daataa ||

I am just a poor beggar of Yours; You are Your Own Lord Master, You are the Great Giver.

ਹੋਹੁ ਦੈਆਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਮੰਗਤ ਜਨ ਕੰਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥੧॥

होहु दैआल नामु देहु मंगत जन कंउ सदा रहउ रंगि राता ॥१॥

Hohu daiaal naamu dehu manggat jan kannu sadaa rahau ranggi raataa ||1||

Be Merciful, and bless me, a humble beggar, with Your Name, so that I may forever remain imbued with Your Love. ||1||


ਹੰਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ॥

हंउ बलिहारै जाउ साचे तेरे नाम विटहु ॥

Hannu balihaarai jaau saache tere naam vitahu ||

I am a sacrifice to Your Name, O True Lord.

ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਏਕੋ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

करण कारण सभना का एको अवरु न दूजा कोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kara(nn) kaara(nn) sabhanaa kaa eko avaru na doojaa koee ||1|| rahaau ||

The One Lord is the Cause of causes; there is no other at all. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਹੁਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਪਏ ਕਿਰਪਨ ਕਉ ਅਬ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

बहुते फेर पए किरपन कउ अब किछु किरपा कीजै ॥

Bahute pher pae kirapan kau ab kichhu kirapaa keejai ||

I was wretched; I wandered through so many cycles of reincarnation. Now, Lord, please bless me with Your Grace.

ਹੋਹੁ ਦਇਆਲ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਐਸੀ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੨॥

होहु दइआल दरसनु देहु अपुना ऐसी बखस करीजै ॥२॥

Hohu daiaal darasanu dehu apunaa aisee bakhas kareejai ||2||

Be merciful, and grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; please grant me such a gift. ||2||


ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਰਮ ਪਟ ਖੂਲ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

भनति नानक भरम पट खूल्हे गुर परसादी जानिआ ॥

Bhanati naanak bharam pat khoolhe gur parasaadee jaaniaa ||

Prays Nanak, the shutters of doubt have been opened wide; by Guru's Grace, I have come to know the Lord.

ਸਾਚੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਹੈ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੩॥੧॥੯॥

साची लिव लागी है भीतरि सतिगुर सिउ मनु मानिआ ॥३॥१॥९॥

Saachee liv laagee hai bheetari satigur siu manu maaniaa ||3||1||9||

I am filled to overflowing with true love; my mind is pleased and appeased by the True Guru. ||3||1||9||

ਨਾਮੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

नामै ही ते सभु किछु होआ बिनु सतिगुर नामु न जापै ॥

Naamai hee te sabhu kichhu hoaa binu satigur naamu na jaapai ||

Everything comes from the Naam, the Name of the Lord; without the True Guru, the Naam is not experienced.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਚਾਖੇ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥

गुर का सबदु महा रसु मीठा बिनु चाखे सादु न जापै ॥

Gur kaa sabadu mahaa rasu meethaa binu chaakhe saadu na jaapai ||

The Word of the Guru's Shabad is the sweetest and most sublime essence, but without tasting it, its flavor cannot be experienced.

ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਆਪੈ ॥

कउडी बदलै जनमु गवाइआ चीनसि नाही आपै ॥

Kaudee badalai janamu gavaaiaa cheenasi naahee aapai ||

He wastes this human life in exchange for a mere shell; he does not understand his own self.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि होवै ता एको जाणै हउमै दुखु न संतापै ॥१॥

Guramukhi hovai taa eko jaa(nn)ai haumai dukhu na santtaapai ||1||

But, if he becomes Gurmukh, then he comes to know the One Lord, and the disease of egotism does not afflict him. ||1||


ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਅਪਣੇ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥

बलिहारी गुर अपणे विटहु जिनि साचे सिउ लिव लाई ॥

Balihaaree gur apa(nn)e vitahu jini saache siu liv laaee ||

I am a sacrifice to my Guru, who has lovingly attached me to the True Lord.

ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨੑਿ ਆਤਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सबदु चीन्हि आतमु परगासिआ सहजे रहिआ समाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sabadu cheenhi aatamu paragaasiaa sahaje rahiaa samaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

Concentrating on the Word of the Shabad, the soul is illumined and enlightened. I remain absorbed in celestial ecstasy. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

गुरमुखि गावै गुरमुखि बूझै गुरमुखि सबदु बीचारे ॥

Guramukhi gaavai guramukhi boojhai guramukhi sabadu beechaare ||

The Gurmukh sings the Praises of the Lord; the Gurmukh understands. The Gurmukh contemplates the Word of the Shabad.

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥

जीउ पिंडु सभु गुर ते उपजै गुरमुखि कारज सवारे ॥

Jeeu pinddu sabhu gur te upajai guramukhi kaaraj savaare ||

Body and soul are totally rejuvenated through the Guru; the Gurmukh's affairs are resolved in his favor.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥

मनमुखि अंधा अंधु कमावै बिखु खटे संसारे ॥

Manamukhi anddhaa anddhu kamaavai bikhu khate sanssaare ||

The blind self-willed manmukh acts blindly, and earns only poison in this world.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੨॥

माइआ मोहि सदा दुखु पाए बिनु गुर अति पिआरे ॥२॥

Maaiaa mohi sadaa dukhu paae binu gur ati piaare ||2||

Enticed by Maya, he suffers in constant pain, without the most Beloved Guru. ||2||


ਸੋਈ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਚਾਲੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ॥

सोई सेवकु जे सतिगुर सेवे चालै सतिगुर भाए ॥

Soee sevaku je satigur seve chaalai satigur bhaae ||

He alone is a selfless servant, who serves the True Guru, and walks in harmony with the True Guru's Will.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਾਚੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

साचा सबदु सिफति है साची साचा मंनि वसाए ॥

Saachaa sabadu siphati hai saachee saachaa manni vasaae ||

The True Shabad, the Word of God, is the True Praise of God; enshrine the True Lord within your mind.

ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਏ ॥

सची बाणी गुरमुखि आखै हउमै विचहु जाए ॥

Sachee baa(nn)ee guramukhi aakhai haumai vichahu jaae ||

The Gurmukh speaks the True Word of Gurbani, and egotism departs from within.

ਆਪੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥੩॥

आपे दाता करमु है साचा साचा सबदु सुणाए ॥३॥

Aape daataa karamu hai saachaa saachaa sabadu su(nn)aae ||3||

He Himself is the Giver, and True are His actions. He proclaims the True Word of the Shabad. ||3||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖਟੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਏ ॥

गुरमुखि घाले गुरमुखि खटे गुरमुखि नामु जपाए ॥

Guramukhi ghaale guramukhi khate guramukhi naamu japaae ||

The Gurmukh works, and the Gurmukh earns; the Gurmukh inspires others to chant the Naam.

ਸਦਾ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥

सदा अलिपतु साचै रंगि राता गुर कै सहजि सुभाए ॥

Sadaa alipatu saachai ranggi raataa gur kai sahaji subhaae ||

He is forever unattached, imbued with the Love of the True Lord, intuitively in harmony with the Guru.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਕੂੜੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਏ ॥

मनमुखु सद ही कूड़ो बोलै बिखु बीजै बिखु खाए ॥

Manamukhu sad hee koo(rr)o bolai bikhu beejai bikhu khaae ||

The self-willed manmukh always tells lies; he plants the seeds of poison, and eats only poison.

ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਦਾਧਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਵਣੁ ਛਡਾਏ ॥੪॥

जमकालि बाधा त्रिसना दाधा बिनु गुर कवणु छडाए ॥४॥

Jamakaali baadhaa trisanaa daadhaa binu gur kava(nn)u chhadaae ||4||

He is bound and gagged by the Messenger of Death, and burnt in the fire of desire; who can save him, except the Guru? ||4||


ਸਚਾ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

सचा तीरथु जितु सत सरि नावणु गुरमुखि आपि बुझाए ॥

Sachaa teerathu jitu sat sari naava(nn)u guramukhi aapi bujhaae ||

True is that place of pilgrimage, where one bathes in the pool of Truth, and achieves self-realization as Gurmukh. The Gurmukh understands his own self.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਏ ਤਿਤੁ ਨਾਤੈ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਏ ॥

अठसठि तीरथ गुर सबदि दिखाए तितु नातै मलु जाए ॥

Athasathi teerath gur sabadi dikhaae titu naatai malu jaae ||

The Lord has shown that the Word of the Guru's Shabad is the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage; bathing in it, filth is washed away.

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਲਾਏ ॥

सचा सबदु सचा है निरमलु ना मलु लगै न लाए ॥

Sachaa sabadu sachaa hai niramalu naa malu lagai na laae ||

True and Immaculate is the True Word of His Shabad; no filth touches or clings to Him.

ਸਚੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥

सची सिफति सची सालाह पूरे गुर ते पाए ॥५॥

Sachee siphati sachee saalaah poore gur te paae ||5||

True Praise, True Devotional Praise, is obtained from the Perfect Guru. ||5||


ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਰਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੇਰਾ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥

तनु मनु सभु किछु हरि तिसु केरा दुरमति कहणु न जाए ॥

Tanu manu sabhu kichhu hari tisu keraa duramati kaha(nn)u na jaae ||

Body, mind, everything belongs to the Lord; but the evil-minded ones cannot even say this.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਏ ॥

हुकमु होवै ता निरमलु होवै हउमै विचहु जाए ॥

Hukamu hovai taa niramalu hovai haumai vichahu jaae ||

If such is the Hukam of the Lord's Command, then one becomes pure and spotless, and the ego is taken away from within.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਚਾਖੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥

गुर की साखी सहजे चाखी त्रिसना अगनि बुझाए ॥

Gur kee saakhee sahaje chaakhee trisanaa agani bujhaae ||

I have intuitively tasted the Guru's Teachings, and the fire of my desire has been quenched.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੬॥

गुर कै सबदि राता सहजे माता सहजे रहिआ समाए ॥६॥

Gur kai sabadi raataa sahaje maataa sahaje rahiaa samaae ||6||

Attuned to the Word of the Guru's Shabad, one is naturally intoxicated, merging imperceptibly into the Lord. ||6||


ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

हरि का नामु सति करि जाणै गुर कै भाइ पिआरे ॥

Hari kaa naamu sati kari jaa(nn)ai gur kai bhaai piaare ||

The Name of the Lord is known as True, through the Love of the Beloved Guru.

ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ਸਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

सची वडिआई गुर ते पाई सचै नाइ पिआरे ॥

Sachee vadiaaee gur te paaee sachai naai piaare ||

True Glorious Greatness is obtained from the Guru, through the Beloved True Name.

ਏਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

एको सचा सभ महि वरतै विरला को वीचारे ॥

Eko sachaa sabh mahi varatai viralaa ko veechaare ||

The One True Lord is permeating and pervading among all; how rare is the one who contemplates this.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਤਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥੭॥

आपे मेलि लए ता बखसे सची भगति सवारे ॥७॥

Aape meli lae taa bakhase sachee bhagati savaare ||7||

The Lord Himself unites us in Union, and forgives us; He embellishes us with true devotional worship. ||7||


ਸਭੋ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

सभो सचु सचु सचु वरतै गुरमुखि कोई जाणै ॥

Sabho sachu sachu sachu varatai guramukhi koee jaa(nn)ai ||

All is Truth; Truth, and Truth alone is pervading; how rare is the Gurmukh who knows this.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਹੁਕਮੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

जमण मरणा हुकमो वरतै गुरमुखि आपु पछाणै ॥

Jamma(nn) mara(nn)aa hukamo varatai guramukhi aapu pachhaa(nn)ai ||

Birth and death occur by the Hukam of His Command; the Gurmukh understands his own self.

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭਾਏ ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

नामु धिआए ता सतिगुरु भाए जो इछै सो फलु पाए ॥

Naamu dhiaae taa satiguru bhaae jo ichhai so phalu paae ||

He meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and so pleases the True Guru. He receives whatever rewards he desires.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੮॥੧॥

नानक तिस दा सभु किछु होवै जि विचहु आपु गवाए ॥८॥१॥

Naanak tis daa sabhu kichhu hovai ji vichahu aapu gavaae ||8||1||

O Nanak, one who eradicates self-conceit from within, has everything. ||8||1||

Soohee, Third Mehl:

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਅਤਿ ਸੁਆਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਉ ਪਿਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

काइआ कामणि अति सुआल्हिउ पिरु वसै जिसु नाले ॥

Kaaiaa kaama(nn)i ati suaalhiu piru vasai jisu naale ||

The body-bride is very beautiful; she dwells with her Husband Lord.

ਪਿਰ ਸਚੇ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੇ ॥

पिर सचे ते सदा सुहागणि गुर का सबदु सम्हाले ॥

Pir sache te sadaa suhaaga(nn)i gur kaa sabadu samhaale ||

She becomes the happy soul-bride of her True Husband Lord, contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਲੇ ॥੧॥

हरि की भगति सदा रंगि राता हउमै विचहु जाले ॥१॥

Hari kee bhagati sadaa ranggi raataa haumai vichahu jaale ||1||

The Lord's devotee is forever attuned to the Lord's Love; her ego is burnt away from within. ||1||


ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

वाहु वाहु पूरे गुर की बाणी ॥

Vaahu vaahu poore gur kee baa(nn)ee ||

Waaho! Waaho! Blessed, blessed is the Word of the Perfect Guru's Bani.

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पूरे गुर ते उपजी साचि समाणी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Poore gur te upajee saachi samaa(nn)ee ||1|| rahaau ||

It wells up and springs forth from the Perfect Guru, and merges into Truth. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਸੈ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ॥

काइआ अंदरि सभु किछु वसै खंड मंडल पाताला ॥

Kaaiaa anddari sabhu kichhu vasai khandd manddal paataalaa ||

Everything is within the Lord - the continents, worlds and nether regions.

ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਸੈ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ॥

काइआ अंदरि जगजीवन दाता वसै सभना करे प्रतिपाला ॥

Kaaiaa anddari jagajeevan daataa vasai sabhanaa kare prtipaalaa ||

The Life of the World, the Great Giver, dwells within the body; He is the Cherisher of all.

ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

काइआ कामणि सदा सुहेली गुरमुखि नामु सम्हाला ॥२॥

Kaaiaa kaama(nn)i sadaa suhelee guramukhi naamu samhaalaa ||2||

The body-bride is eternally beautiful; the Gurmukh contemplates the Naam. ||2||


ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਵਸੈ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥

काइआ अंदरि आपे वसै अलखु न लखिआ जाई ॥

Kaaiaa anddari aape vasai alakhu na lakhiaa jaaee ||

The Lord Himself dwells within the body; He is invisible and cannot be seen.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਾਲਣਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

मनमुखु मुगधु बूझै नाही बाहरि भालणि जाई ॥

Manamukhu mugadhu boojhai naahee baahari bhaala(nn)i jaaee ||

The foolish self-willed manmukh does not understand; he goes out searching for the Lord externally.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਦਿਤਾ ਲਖਾਈ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु सेवे सदा सुखु पाए सतिगुरि अलखु दिता लखाई ॥३॥

Satiguru seve sadaa sukhu paae satiguri alakhu ditaa lakhaaee ||3||

One who serves the True Guru is always at peace; the True Guru has shown me the Invisible Lord. ||3||


ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

काइआ अंदरि रतन पदारथ भगति भरे भंडारा ॥

Kaaiaa anddari ratan padaarath bhagati bhare bhanddaaraa ||

Within the body there are jewels and precious treasures, the over-flowing treasure of devotion.

ਇਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਉ ਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਮੀ ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰਾ ॥

इसु काइआ अंदरि नउ खंड प्रिथमी हाट पटण बाजारा ॥

Isu kaaiaa anddari nau khandd prithamee haat pata(nn) baajaaraa ||

Within this body are the nine continents of the earth, its markets, cities and streets.

ਇਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

इसु काइआ अंदरि नामु नउ निधि पाईऐ गुर कै सबदि वीचारा ॥४॥

Isu kaaiaa anddari naamu nau nidhi paaeeai gur kai sabadi veechaaraa ||4||

Within this body are the nine treasures of the Naam; contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad, it is obtained. ||4||


ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੁਲਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਤੋਲਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

काइआ अंदरि तोलि तुलावै आपे तोलणहारा ॥

Kaaiaa anddari toli tulaavai aape tola(nn)ahaaraa ||

Within the body, the Lord estimates the weight; He Himself is the weigher.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮੋਲੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ॥

इहु मनु रतनु जवाहर माणकु तिस का मोलु अफारा ॥

Ihu manu ratanu javaahar maa(nn)aku tis kaa molu aphaaraa ||

This mind is the jewel, the gem, the diamond; it is absolutely priceless.

ਮੋਲਿ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੫॥

मोलि कित ही नामु पाईऐ नाही नामु पाईऐ गुर बीचारा ॥५॥

Moli kit hee naamu paaeeai naahee naamu paaeeai gur beechaaraa ||5||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, cannot be purchased at any price; the Naam is obtained by contemplating the Guru. ||5||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਖੋਜੈ ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥

गुरमुखि होवै सु काइआ खोजै होर सभ भरमि भुलाई ॥

Guramukhi hovai su kaaiaa khojai hor sabh bharami bhulaaee ||

One who becomes Gurmukh searches this body; all others just wander around in confusion.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥

जिस नो देइ सोई जनु पावै होर किआ को करे चतुराई ॥

Jis no dei soee janu paavai hor kiaa ko kare chaturaaee ||

That humble being alone obtains it, unto whom the Lord bestows it. What other clever tricks can anyone try?

ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੬॥

काइआ अंदरि भउ भाउ वसै गुर परसादी पाई ॥६॥

Kaaiaa anddari bhau bhaau vasai gur parasaadee paaee ||6||

Within the body, the Fear of God and Love for Him abides; by Guru's Grace, they are obtained. ||6||
