ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅਬਿਗਤੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ।

गुर मूरति पूरन ब्रहमु अबिगतु अबिनासी ।

gur moorat pooran braham abigat abinaasee |

Guru is replica of the perfect Braham who is unmanifest and indestructible.


ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ।

पारब्रहमु गुर सबदु है सतसंगि निवासी ।

paarabraham gur sabad hai satasang nivaasee |

Word of Guru (and not his body) is transcendental Brahm who resides in the holy congregation (satsangat).


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਖੰਡੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਭਿਆਸੀ ।

साधसंगति सचु खंडु है भाउ भगति अभिआसी ।

saadhasangat sach khandd hai bhaau bhagat abhiaasee |

The company of the saints (sadhsangat) is the abode of truth (sachkhand) where opportunity for loving devotion is created.


ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੀ ।

चहु वरना उपदेसु करि गुरमति परगासी ।

chahu varanaa upades kar guramat paragaasee |

Here all the four varnas are preached to and the wisdom of the Guru (Gurmat) brought before the people.


ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਹਿਰਾਸੀ ।

पैरी पै पा खाक होइ गुरमुखि रहिरासी ।

pairee pai paa khaak hoe guramukh rahiraasee |

Only here touching the feet and by becoming dust of the feet, gurmukhs become followers of the way of discipline.


ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਦਾਸੁ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ ।੧।

माइआ विचि उदासु गति होइ आस निरासी ।१।

maaeaa vich udaas gat hoe aas niraasee |1|

Becoming neutral amidst hopes, the individuals through the holy congregation go beyond maya.

गुर सिखी बारीक है सिल चटणु फिकी ।

gur sikhee baareek hai sil chattan fikee |

To be disciple of the Guru is very subtle activity and it is like licking of the tasteless stone.


ਤ੍ਰਿਖੀ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਹੈ ਉਹੁ ਵਾਲਹੁ ਨਿਕੀ ।

त्रिखी खंडे धार है उहु वालहु निकी ।

trikhee khandde dhaar hai uhu vaalahu nikee |

It is thinner than the hair and sharper than the edge of the sword.


ਭੂਹ ਭਵਿਖ ਨ ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਸਰਿ ਮਿਕਣਿ ਮਿਕੀ ।

भूह भविख न वरतमान सरि मिकणि मिकी ।

bhooh bhavikh na varatamaan sar mikan mikee |

Nothing is equal to it in present, past and future.


ਦੁਤੀਆ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਏਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਇਕਾ ਇਕੀ ।

दुतीआ नासति एतु घरि होइ इका इकी ।

duteea naasat et ghar hoe ikaa ikee |

In the house of Sikhism, the duality gets erased, and one becomes one with that One Lord God.


ਦੂਆ ਤੀਆ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਣੁ ਕਕਾ ਕਿਕੀ ।

दूआ तीआ वीसरै सणु कका किकी ।

dooaa teea veesarai san kakaa kikee |

Man forgets the idea of second, third, when and why.


ਸਭੈ ਸਿਕਾਂ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਸਿਕੀ ।੨।

सभै सिकां परहरै सुखु इकतु सिकी ।२।

sabhai sikaan paraharai sukh ikat sikee |2|

Repudiating all the desires, the individual gets delight in the hope of one Lord.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ।

गुरमुखि मारगु आखीऐ गुरमति हितकारी ।

guramukh maarag aakheeai guramat hitakaaree |

The way leading to the adoption of beneficent wisdom of the Guru (Gurmat) is known as the Gurmukh-way.


ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ।

हुकमि रजाई चलणा गुर सबद वीचारी ।

hukam rajaaee chalanaa gur sabad veechaaree |

In it, one is taught to live in the will of the Lord (hukam) and to ponder upon the Word of the Guru.


ਭਾਣਾ ਭਾਵੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ।

भाणा भावै खसम का निहचउ निरंकारी ।

bhaanaa bhaavai khasam kaa nihchau nirankaaree |

The will of the Master comes to be loved and, in all thoughts, permeates the formless Lord.


ਇਸਕ ਮੁਸਕ ਮਹਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਹੁਇ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ।

इसक मुसक महकारु है हुइ परउपकारी ।

eisak musak mahakaar hai hue praupakaaree |

As love and fragrance do not remain hidden, the Gurmukh also does not remain concealed and gets himself busy in altruistic activities.


ਸਿਦਕ ਸਬੂਰੀ ਸਾਬਤੇ ਮਸਤੀ ਹੁਸੀਆਰੀ ।

सिदक सबूरी साबते मसती हुसीआरी ।

sidak sabooree saabate masatee huseeaaree |

He imbibes in him the faith, contentment, ecstasy, and the qualities of being skillful.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਜਿਣਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੀ ।੩।

गुरमुखि आपु गवाइआ जिणि हउमै मारी ।३।

guramukh aap gavaaeaa jin haumai maaree |3|

Gurmukh decimates ego and conquers it.

ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਚਲਣਾ ਹੋਇ ਪਾਹੁਣਿਚਾਰੀ ।

भाइ भगति भै चलणा होइ पाहुणिचारी ।

bhaae bhagat bhai chalanaa hoe paahunichaaree |

Considering himself a guest, the sikh spends his life in loving devotion.


ਚਲਣੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਅਜਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਗਹੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ।

चलणु जाणि अजाणु होइ गहु गरबु निवारी ।

chalan jaan ajaan hoe gahu garab nivaaree |

They (Sikhs) remain unknown to deceit and pull out the ego from their minds.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਨਿਤ ਪਰਾਹੁਣੇ ਏਹੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ।

गुरसिख नित पराहुणे एहु करणी सारी ।

gurasikh nit paraahune ehu karanee saaree |

Their true conduct is to treat themselves as guests in this world.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪਿਆਰੀ ।

गुरमुखि सेव कमावणी सतिगुरू पिआरी ।

guramukh sev kamaavanee satiguroo piaaree |

The object of the Gurmukh is service and only such action is loved by the Lord.


ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸੁਧਾਰੀ ।

सबदि सुरति लिव लीण होइ परवार सुधारी ।

sabad surat liv leen hoe paravaar sudhaaree |

Merging consciousness in the Word-shabad, they reform the whole family (in the form of world).


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ।੪।

साधसंगति जाइ सहज घरि निरमलि निरंकारी ।४।

saadhasangat jaae sehaj ghar niramal nirankaaree |4|

Through holy congregation, they become pure and formless and get established in the final stage of equipoise.

ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਉਨਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ।

परम जोति परगासु करि उनमनि लिव लाई ।

param jot paragaas kar unaman liv laaee |

Kindling the supreme light in his mind, a gurmukh remains absorbed in the state of supreme trance.


ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਵਾਈ ।

परम ततु परवाणु करि अनहदि धुनि वाई ।

param tat paravaan kar anahad dhun vaaee |

When he adopts the supreme reality (Lord) in his mind, the unstruck melody starts ringing.


ਪਰਮਾਰਥ ਪਰਬੋਧ ਕਰਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮ ਹਾਈ ।

परमारथ परबोध करि परमातम हाई ।

paramaarath parabodh kar paramaatam haaee |

Becoming conscious for altruism, now resides in his heart the sense of God’s omnipresence.


ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਅਵੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਨਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈ ।

गुर उपदेसु अवेसु करि अनभउ पदु पाई ।

gur upades aves kar anbhau pad paaee |

Inspired by the teachings of the Guru, gurmukh attains the state of fearlessness.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਧਨਾ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਧਿਆਈ ।

साधसंगति करि साधना इक मनि इकु धिआई ।

saadhasangat kar saadhanaa ik man ik dhiaaee |

Disciplining himself in the company in the holy ones (sadhsangat) i.e. losing his ego, he remembers Lord with single-minded devotion.


ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉ ਚੜ੍ਹਿ ਇਉਂ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈ ।੫।

वीह इकीह चढ़ाउ चढ़ि इउं निज घरि जाई ।५।

veeh ikeeh charrhaau charrh iaun nij ghar jaaee |5|

This way, entering from this world into the spiritual world, he finally establishes himself in his real nature.

ਦਰਪਣਿ ਵਾਂਗ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਆਪ ਨਿਹਾਲੈ ।

दरपणि वांग धिआनु धरि आपु आप निहालै ।

darapan vaang dhiaan dhar aap aap nihaalai |

As is the reflection in the mirror, He sees in the world His own self.


ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਚੰਦੁ ਜਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਭਾਲੈ ।

घटि घटि पूरन ब्रहमु है चंदु जल विचि भालै ।

ghatt ghatt pooran braham hai chand jal vich bhaalai |

That perfect Lord is there in all the selves; the ignorant individual searches Him outside as the moon sees its own reflection in the water and feels it is there.


ਗੋਰਸੁ ਗਾਈ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਘਿਉ ਦੁਧੁ ਵਿਚਾਲੈ ।

गोरसु गाई वेखदा घिउ दुधु विचालै ।

goras gaaee vekhadaa ghiau dudh vichaalai |

Lord Himself is there in the milk, cow and ghee.


ਫੁਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਲੈ ਫਲੁ ਸਾਉ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲੈ ।

फुलां अंदरि वासु लै फलु साउ सम्हालै ।

fulaan andar vaas lai fal saau samhaalai |

Taking fragrance from the flowers, He Himself is the flavor in them.


ਕਾਸਟਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਵੇਖਿ ਜਲ ਧਰਤਿ ਹਿਆਲੈ ।

कासटि अगनि चलितु वेखि जल धरति हिआलै ।

kaasatt agan chalit vekh jal dharat hiaalai |

His own phenomenon is there in wood, fire, water, earth and snow.


ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੇਖਾਲੈ ।੬।

घटि घटि पूरनु ब्रहमु है गुरमुखि वेखालै ।६।

ghatt ghatt pooran braham hai guramukh vekhaalai |6|

The perfect Lord resides in all the selves and is visualized by a rare gurmukh.

ਦਿਬ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਗੁਰ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿ ਸਿਖ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋਈ ।

दिब दिसटि गुर धिआनु धरि सिख विरला कोई ।

dib disatt gur dhiaan dhar sikh viralaa koee |

Rare is the gurmukh who concentrates upon the Guru and attains the divine sight.


ਰਤਨ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਰਤਨਾ ਅਵਲੋਈ ।

रतन पारखू होइ कै रतना अवलोई ।

ratan paarakhoo hoe kai ratanaa avaloee |

He is the jeweler, having the capacity of testing as well as keeping the jewels, in the form of virtues.


ਮਨੁ ਮਾਣਕੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕਾ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਿ ਪਰੋਈ ।

मनु माणकु निरमोलका सतिसंगि परोई ।

man maanak niramolakaa satisang paroee |

His mind becomes pure like ruby and he remains absorbed in the holy congregation.


ਰਤਨ ਮਾਲ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਜਗਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਈ ।

रतन माल गुरसिख जगि गुरमति गुण गोई ।

ratan maal gurasikh jag guramat gun goee |


ਜੀਵਦਿਆਂ ਮਰਿ ਅਮਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮੋਈ ।

जीवदिआं मरि अमरु होइ सुख सहजि समोई ।

jeevadiaan mar amar hoe sukh sehaj samoee |

He is dead while being alive i.e. he turns his face away from evil propensities.


ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਣੋਈ ।੭।

ओति पोति जोती जोति मिलि जाणै जाणोई ।७।

ot pot jotee jot mil jaanai jaanoee |7|

Totally merging himself in the supreme light, he understands his self as well as the Lord.

ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਣ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ।

राग नाद विसमादु होइ गुण गहिर गंभीरा ।

raag naad visamaad hoe gun gahir ganbheeraa |

Elated in the music and sound (of the word), the disciple of the Guru becomes full of serene qualities.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣ ਹੋਇ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਧੀਰਾ ।

सबद सुरति लिव लीण होइ अनहदि धुनि धीरा ।

sabad surat liv leen hoe anahad dhun dheeraa |

His consciousness gets merged into the Word and his mind stabilizes in the unstruck melody.


ਜੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਵਜਾਇਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਉਨਿਮਨਿ ਚੀਰਾ ।

जंत्री जंत्र वजाइदा मनि उनिमनि चीरा ।

jantree jantr vajaaeidaa man uniman cheeraa |

The Guru plays upon the instrument of sermon, listening to which the mind dons the clothes of the highest state of equipoise (to dance before the Lord).


ਵਜਿ ਵਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਵਜੀਰਾ ।

वजि वजाइ समाइ लै गुर सबद वजीरा ।

vaj vajaae samaae lai gur sabad vajeeraa |

The Sikh of the Guru, getting attuned to the instrument of teaching ultimately turns out himself to be a player of the Guru Word.


ਅੰਤਰਿਜਾਮੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਤਿ ਪੀਰਾ ।

अंतरिजामी जाणीऐ अंतरि गति पीरा ।

antarijaamee jaaneeai antar gat peeraa |

Now the omniscient Lord understands his pangs of separation.


ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਬੇਧਿ ਹੀਰੈ ਹੀਰਾ ।੮।

गुर चेला चेला गुरू बेधि हीरै हीरा ।८।

gur chelaa chelaa guroo bedh heerai heeraa |8|

The disciple transforms into Guru and the guru into disciple, in the same manner, as the diamond cutter in fact is also a diamond.

ਪਾਰਸੁ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਾਰਸਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ।

पारसु होइआ पारसहु गुरमुखि वडिआई ।

paaras hoeaa paarasahu guramukh vaddiaaee |

The greatness of the gurmukh is that he, being the philosopher’s stone, makes everyone a philosopher’s stone.


ਹੀਰੈ ਹੀਰਾ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ।

हीरै हीरा बेधिआ जोती जोति मिलाई ।

heerai heeraa bedhiaa jotee jot milaaee |

As the diamond is cut by the diamond, the light of the gurmukh merges in Supreme Light.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਜੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਵਾਈ ।

सबद सुरति लिव लीणु होइ जंत्र जंत्री वाई ।

sabad surat liv leen hoe jantr jantree vaaee |

His consciousness is attuned to the Word as the mind of the player absorbs in the instrument.


ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਰਚਾਈ ।

गुर चेला चेला गुरू परचा परचाई ।

gur chelaa chelaa guroo parachaa parachaaee |

Now the disciple and the Guru become identical. They become one and merge in one another.


ਪੁਰਖਹੁੰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਪੁਰਖੋਤਮ ਹਾਈ ।

पुरखहुं पुरखु उपाइआ पुरखोतम हाई ।

purakhahun purakh upaaeaa purakhotam haaee |

From man was born man (from Guru Nanak to Guru Angad) and he became the superior man.


ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਉਲੰਘਿ ਕੈ ਹੋਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਈ ।੯।

वीह इकीह उलंघि कै होइ सहजि समाई ।९।

veeh ikeeh ulangh kai hoe sehaj samaaee |9|

Crossing the world with one jump, he merged in the innate knowledge.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਦੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮੁ ਦੇਖੈ ।

सतिगुरु दरसनु देखदो परमातमु देखै ।

satigur darasan dekhado paramaatam dekhai |

He, who beholds the true Guru, has beholden the Lord.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣ ਹੋਇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਤਿ ਲੇਖੈ ।

सबद सुरति लिव लीण होइ अंतरि गति लेखै ।

sabad surat liv leen hoe antar gat lekhai |

Putting his consciousness into the Word, he concentrates upon his self.


ਚਰਨ ਕਵਲ ਦੀ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਹੋਇ ਚੰਦਨ ਭੇਖੈ ।

चरन कवल दी वासना होइ चंदन भेखै ।

charan kaval dee vaasanaa hoe chandan bhekhai |

Enjoying the fragrance of the lotus feet of the Guru, he transforms himself into sandalwood.


ਚਰਣੋਦਕ ਮਕਰੰਦ ਰਸ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੈ ।

चरणोदक मकरंद रस विसमादु विसेखै ।

charanodak makarand ras visamaad visekhai |

Tasting the nectar of the lotus feet, he goes into a special wondrous state (of super consciousness).


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਰੇਖੈ ।

गुरमति निहचलु चितु करि विचि रूप न रेखै ।

guramat nihachal chit kar vich roop na rekhai |

Now in consonance with the Gurmat, the wisdom of the Guru, he stabilizing the mind goes beyond the boundaries of forms and figures.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਹੋਇ ਅਲਖ ਅਲੇਖੈ ।੧੦।

साधसंगति सच खंडि जाइ होइ अलख अलेखै ।१०।

saadhasangat sach khandd jaae hoe alakh alekhai |10|

Reaching the holy congregation, the abode of truth, he himself becomes like that imperceptible and ineffable Lord.

अखी अंदरि देखदा दरसन विचि दिसै ।

He who sees from inside the eyes, is in fact beholden outside also.


ਸਬਦੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਿਸੈ ।

सबदै विचि वखाणीऐ सुरती विचि रिसै ।

sabadai vich vakhaaneeai suratee vich risai |

He is described through words and He is illumined in the consciousness.


ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਾਸਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਭਵਰੁ ਸਲਿਸੈ ।

चरण कवल विचि वासना मनु भवरु सलिसै ।

charan kaval vich vaasanaa man bhavar salisai |

For the fragrance of the lotus feet of the Guru, the mind, becoming the black bee, enjoys the pleasure.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਿਜੋਗਿ ਨ ਕਿਸੈ ।

साधसंगति संजोगु मिलि विजोगि न किसै ।

saadhasangat sanjog mil vijog na kisai |

Whatever is attained in the holy congregation, he gets not away from it.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਿਸੈ ।

गुरमति अंदरि चितु है चितु गुरमति जिसै ।

guramat andar chit hai chit guramat jisai |

By putting the mind into the teachings of the Guru, the mind itself changes according to the wisdom of the Guru.


ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹੈ ਤਿਸੈ ।੧੧।

पारब्रहम पूरण ब्रहमु सतिगुर है तिसै ।११।

The true Guru is the form of that transcendental Brahm, who is beyond all the qualities.

He is sight in the eyes and breath in the nostril.


ਕੰਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਜੀਭ ਸਾਦੁ ਸਮੋਈ ।

कंनां अंदरि सुरति होइ जीभ सादु समोई ।

kanaan andar surat hoe jeebh saad samoee |

He is consciousness in the ears and taste in the tongue.


ਹਥੀ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਪੈਰ ਪੰਥੁ ਸਥੋਈ ।

हथी किरति कमावणी पैर पंथु सथोई ।

hathee kirat kamaavanee pair panth sathoee |

With hands He works and becomes fellow traveler on the path.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਲੋਈ ।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु पाइआ मति सबदि विलोई ।

guramukh sukh fal paaeaa mat sabad viloee |

The gurmukh has attained the fruit of delight after churning the Word with consciousness.


ਪਰਕਿਰਤੀ ਹੂ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੋਈ ।

परकिरती हू बाहरा गुरमुखि विरलोई ।

parakiratee hoo baaharaa guramukh viraloee |

Any rare gurmukh remains away from the effects of maya.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਚੰਨਣ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਚੰਨਣੁ ਹੋਈ ।੧੨।

साधसंगति चंनण बिरखु मिलि चंनणु होई ।१२।

saadhasangat chanan birakh mil chanan hoee |12|

The holy congregation (sadhsangat) is a sandal tree to which whosoever becomes sandal.

How is the dynamism of the Unmanifest known?


ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਹੈ ਅਕਥ ਦੀ ਕਿਉ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ।

अकथ कथा है अकथ दी किउ आखि सुणाए ।

akath kathaa hai akath dee kiau aakh sunaae |

How can the story of that ineffable Lord be told?


ਅਚਰਜ ਨੋ ਆਚਰਜੁ ਹੈ ਹੈਰਾਣ ਕਰਾਏ ।

अचरज नो आचरजु है हैराण कराए ।

acharaj no aacharaj hai hairaan karaae |

He is wonderful for the wonder itself.


ਵਿਸਮਾਦੇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਸਮਾਏ ।

विसमादे विसमादु है विसमादु समाए ।

visamaade visamaad hai visamaad samaae |

The absorbents in the wondrous realization get themselves elated.


ਵੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੇਦੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਸੇਸਨਾਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ।

वेदु न जाणै भेदु किहु सेसनागु न पाए ।

ved na jaanai bhed kihu sesanaag na paae |

The Vedas also do not understand this mystery and even the Sesanag (mythological snake having thousand hoods) cannot know its limits.


ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਲਾਏ ।੧੩।

वाहिगुरू सालाहणा गुरु सबदु अलाए ।१३।

vaahiguroo saalaahanaa gur sabad alaae |13|

Vahiguru, God, is eulogized through recitation of the Word of the Guru, Gurbani.

लीहा अंदरि चलीऐ जिउ गाडी राहु ।

As a coach on the highway, goes through the beaten tracks.


ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਿਬਾਹੁ ।

हुकमि रजाई चलणा साधसंगि निबाहु ।

hukam rajaaee chalanaa saadhasang nibaahu |

In the holy congregation, one goes on abiding with the divine ordinance (hukam) and will of the Lord.


ਜਿਉ ਧਨ ਸੋਘਾ ਰਖਦਾ ਘਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਹੁ ।

जिउ धन सोघा रखदा घरि अंदरि साहु ।

jiau dhan soghaa rakhadaa ghar andar saahu |

As the wise person, keeps money intact at home.


ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਜਾਦ ਨ ਛਡਈ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ।

जिउ मिरजाद न छडई साइरु असगाहु ।

jiau mirajaad na chhaddee saaeir asagaahu |

And the deep ocean leaves not its general nature.


ਲਤਾ ਹੇਠਿ ਲਤਾੜੀਐ ਅਜਰਾਵਰੁ ਘਾਹੁ ।

लता हेठि लताड़ीऐ अजरावरु घाहु ।

lataa hetth lataarreeai ajaraavar ghaahu |

As the grass is trampled under the feet.


ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਹੈ ਮਾਨਸਰੁ ਹੰਸ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਵਾਹੁ ।

धरमसाल है मानसरु हंस गुरसिख वाहु ।

dharamasaal hai maanasar hans gurasikh vaahu |

Like this (earth) inn is the Mansarovar and the disciples of the Guru are swans.


ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਖਾਹੁ ।੧੪।

रतन पदारथ गुर सबदु करि कीरतनु खाहु ।१४।

ratan padaarath gur sabad kar keeratan khaahu |14|

Who, in the form of kirtan, singing of the holy hymns, eat the pearls of the Word of the Guru.

chanan jiau van khandd vich ohu aap lukaae |

As the sandal tree tries to conceal itself in the forest (but cannot remain hidden).


ਪਾਰਸੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਰਬਤਾਂ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਪਤ ਵਲਾਏ ।

पारसु अंदरि परबतां होइ गुपत वलाए ।

paaras andar parabataan hoe gupat valaae |

The philosopher’s stone being identical with ordinary stones in the mountains spends its time in hiding.


ਸਤ ਸਮੁੰਦੀ ਮਾਨਸਰੁ ਨਹਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ।

सत समुंदी मानसरु नहि अलखु लखाए ।

sat samundee maanasar neh alakh lakhaae |

The seven seas are manifest but the Manasarovar remains invisible to common eyes.


ਜਿਉ ਪਰਛਿੰਨਾ ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਨਹਿ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਏ ।

जिउ परछिंना पारजातु नहि परगटी आए ।

jiau parachhinaa paarajaat neh paragattee aae |

As parijat, wish fulfilling tree, also keeps itself unseen.


ਜਿਉ ਜਗਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਾਮਧੇਨੁ ਨਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਏ ।

जिउ जगि अंदरि कामधेनु नहि आपु जणाए ।

jiau jag andar kaamadhen neh aap janaae |

Kamadhenu, wish fulfilling cow, also lives in this world but never makes itself noticed.


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਲੈ ਕਿਉ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ।੧੫।

सतिगुर दा उपदेसु लै किउ आपु गणाए ।१५।

satigur daa upades lai kiau aap ganaae |15|

Likewise, why should they, who have adopted the teachings of the true Guru, include themselves in any count.

The eyes are two but they behold the one (Lord).


ਦੁਇ ਦੁਇ ਕੰਨਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਇਕ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਲਿਸੈ ।

दुइ दुइ कंनि वखाणीअनि इक सुरति सलिसै ।

due due kan vakhaaneean ik surat salisai |

The ears are two but they bring out the one consciousness.


ਦੁਇ ਦੁਇ ਨਦੀ ਕਿਨਾਰਿਆਂ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਤਿਸੈ ।

दुइ दुइ नदी किनारिआं पारावारु न तिसै ।

due due nadee kinaariaan paaraavaar na tisai |

The river has two banks but they are one, through the connection of water and are not separate.


ਇਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਇਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਰਿਸੈ ।

इक जोति दुइ मूरती इक सबदु सरिसै ।

eik jot due mooratee ik sabad sarisai |

The Guru and the disciple are two identities but one shabad, Word permeates through both of them.


ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝਾਏ ਕਿਸੈ ।੧੬।

गुर चेला चेला गुरू समझाए किसै ।१६।

gur chelaa chelaa guroo samajhaae kisai |16|

When the Guru is disciple and the disciple Guru, who can make the other understand.

ਪਹਿਲੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਉਪਦੇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਏ ।

पहिले गुरि उपदेस दे सिख पैरी पाए ।

pahile gur upades de sikh pairee paae |

Firstly, the Guru making the disciple sit near his feet, preaches to him.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਸਿਖ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ।

साधसंगति करि धरमसाल सिख सेवा लाए ।

saadhasangat kar dharamasaal sikh sevaa laae |

Telling him about the distinction of the holy congregation and the abode of dharma, he is put into the service (of the mankind).


ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਸੇਵਦੇ ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਕਰਾਏ ।

भाइ भगति भै सेवदे गुरपुरब कराए ।

bhaae bhagat bhai sevade gurapurab karaae |

Serving through loving devotion, the servants of the Lord celebrate the anniversaries of the Gurus.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸਚਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ।

सबद सुरति लिव कीरतनु सचि मेलि मिलाए ।

sabad surat liv keeratan sach mel milaae |

Attuning the consciousness with the Word, through the singing of hymns (kirtan), one meets the truth.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸਚ ਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਏ ।

गुरमुखि मारगु सच दा सचु पारि लंघाए ।

guramukh maarag sach daa sach paar langhaae |

The Gurmukh walks the path of Truth; practicing Truth, he crosses the worldly ocean.


ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਨੋ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ।੧੭।

सचि मिलै सचिआर नो मिलि आपु गवाए ।१७।

sach milai sachiaar no mil aap gavaae |17|

Thus, the truthful one obtains the truth and getting it, the ego is erased.

ਸਿਰ ਉਚਾ ਨੀਵੇਂ ਚਰਣ ਸਿਰਿ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਂਦੇ ।

सिर उचा नीवें चरण सिरि पैरी पांदे ।

sir uchaa neeven charan sir pairee paande |

The head is high and the feet are at a low level but still the head bows upon the feet.


ਮੁਹੁ ਅਖੀ ਨਕੁ ਕੰਨ ਹਥ ਦੇਹ ਭਾਰ ਉਚਾਂਦੇ ।

मुहु अखी नकु कंन हथ देह भार उचांदे ।

muhu akhee nak kan hath deh bhaar uchaande |

The feet carry the burden of mouth, eyes, nose, ears, hands and the whole body.


ਸਭ ਚਿਹਨ ਛਡਿ ਪੂਜੀਅਨਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ।

सभ चिहन छडि पूजीअनि कउणु करम कमांदे ।

sabh chihan chhadd poojeean kaun karam kamaande |

Then, leaving aside all the body organs, only they (feet) are worshipped.


ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤੀ ਨਿਤ ਚਲਿ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ।

गुर सरणी साधसंगती नित चलि चलि जांदे ।

gur saranee saadhasangatee nit chal chal jaande |

They daily go to the holy congregation in the shelter of the Guru.


ਵਤਨਿ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਨੋ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਂਦੇ ।

वतनि परउपकार नो करि पारि वसांदे ।

vatan praupakaar no kar paar vasaande |

Then they run for the altruistic works and accomplish the work to the maximum possible.


ਮੇਰੀ ਖਲਹੁ ਮੌਜੜੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਹੰਢਾਂਦੇ ।

मेरी खलहु मौजड़े गुरसिख हंढांदे ।

meree khalahu mauajarre gurasikh handtaande |

I wish that shoes made of my skin were used by the Gursikhs.


ਮਸਤਕ ਲਗੇ ਸਾਧ ਰੇਣੁ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ।੧੮।

मसतक लगे साध रेणु वडभागि जिन्हां दे ।१८।

masatak lage saadh ren vaddabhaag jinhaan de |18|

Whosoever gets the dust of the feet of such people (with above virtues), he is fortunate and a blessed one.

ਜਿਉ ਧਰਤੀ ਧੀਰਜ ਧਰਮੁ ਮਸਕੀਨੀ ਮੂੜੀ ।

जिउ धरती धीरज धरमु मसकीनी मूड़ी ।

jiau dharatee dheeraj dharam masakeenee moorree |

As the earth is embodiment of continence, dharma and humility.


ਸਭ ਦੂੰ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੀ ਤਿਸ ਮਣੀ ਨ ਕੂੜੀ ।

सभ दूं नीवीं होइ रही तिस मणी न कूड़ी ।

sabh doon neeveen hoe rahee tis manee na koorree |

It remains under the feet and this humility is true and not false.


ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਕਰੈ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਅਰੂੜੀ ।

कोई हरि मंदरु करै को करै अरूड़ी ।

koee har mandar karai ko karai aroorree |

Somebody constructs temple of god on it and some gather rubbish heaps on it.


ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਫਲ ਅੰਬ ਲਸੂੜੀ ।

जेहा बीजै सो लुणै फल अंब लसूड़ी ।

jehaa beejai so lunai fal anb lasoorree |

Whatever is sowed is got accordingly whether it be a mango or lasuri, a glutinous fruit.


ਜੀਵਦਿਆਂ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਜੁੜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੂੜੀ ।

जीवदिआं मरि जीवणा जुड़ि गुरमुखि जूड़ी ।

jeevadiaan mar jeevanaa jurr guramukh joorree |

While being dead in life i.e. deleting ego from the self, the gurmukhs join gurmukhs in the holy congregation.


ਲਤਾਂ ਹੇਠਿ ਲਤਾੜੀਐ ਗਤਿ ਸਾਧਾਂ ਧੂੜੀ ।੧੯।

लतां हेठि लताड़ीऐ गति साधां धूड़ी ।१९।

lataan hetth lataarreeai gat saadhaan dhoorree |19|

They become the dust of the feet of the holy men, which is trampled under the feet.

ਜਿਉ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਿਵਿ ਚਲਦਾ ਨੀਵਾਣਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ।

जिउ पाणी निवि चलदा नीवाणि चलाइआ ।

jiau paanee niv chaladaa neevaan chalaaeaa |

As water flows downwards and takes with it whosoever meets it (and makes it also humble).


ਸਭਨਾ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਇ ਰਲਾਇਆ ।

सभना रंगां नो मिलै रलि जाइ रलाइआ ।

sabhanaa rangaan no milai ral jaae ralaaeaa |

All the dyes mix up in water and it becomes one with every color.


ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਂਵਦਾ ਉਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ।

परउपकार कमांवदा उनि आपु गवाइआ ।

praupakaar kamaanvadaa un aap gavaaeaa |

Erasing ego, it does altruistic deeds.


ਕਾਠੁ ਨ ਡੋਬੈ ਪਾਲਿ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੋਹੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ।

काठु न डोबै पालि कै संगि लोहु तराइआ ।

kaatth na ddobai paal kai sang lohu taraaeaa |

It does not sink the wood, it rather makes the iron swim with it.


ਵੁਠੇ ਮੀਹ ਸੁਕਾਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਉਪਜਾਇਆ ।

वुठे मीह सुकालु होइ रस कस उपजाइआ ।

vutthe meeh sukaal hoe ras kas upajaaeaa |

When it rains in rainy season, it makes for prosperity.


ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਸਾਧ ਹੋਇ ਸਫਲਿਓ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ।੨੦।

जीवदिआ मरि साध होइ सफलिओ जगि आइआ ।२०।

jeevadiaa mar saadh hoe safalio jag aaeaa |20|

Likewise, the holy saints getting dead in life i.e. removing their ego, make their coming to the world fruitful.

ਸਿਰ ਤਲਵਾਇਆ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਅਚਲੁ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ।

सिर तलवाइआ जंमिआ होइ अचलु न चलिआ ।

sir talavaaeaa jamiaa hoe achal na chaliaa |

With feet upward and head down, the tree gets rooted and stands unmoved.


ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਧੁਪ ਸਹਿ ਉਹ ਤਪਹੁ ਨ ਟਲਿਆ ।

पाणी पाला धुप सहि उह तपहु न टलिआ ।

paanee paalaa dhup seh uh tapahu na ttaliaa |

It bears with water, cold and sunshine but does not turn its face from self-mortification.


ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖ ਸੁਹਾਵੜਾ ਫਲ ਸੁਫਲੁ ਸੁ ਫਲਿਆ ।

सफलिओ बिरख सुहावड़ा फल सुफलु सु फलिआ ।

safalio birakh suhaavarraa fal sufal su faliaa |

Such a tree is blessed one and becomes full of fruit.


ਫਲੁ ਦੇਇ ਵਟ ਵਗਾਇਐ ਕਰਵਤਿ ਨ ਹਲਿਆ ।

फलु देइ वट वगाइऐ करवति न हलिआ ।

fal dee vatt vagaaeiai karavat na haliaa |

On stoning, it gives fruit and does not stir even under the sawing machine.


ਬੁਰੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਈਆਂ ਭਲਿਆਈ ਭਲਿਆ ।

बुरे करनि बुरिआईआं भलिआई भलिआ ।

bure karan buriaaeean bhaliaaee bhaliaa |

The wicked go on doing evil deeds whereas the gentle remain busy in good activities.


ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਰਨਿ ਜਗਿ ਸਾਧ ਵਿਰਲਿਆ ।

अवगुण कीते गुण करनि जगि साध विरलिआ ।

avagun keete gun karan jag saadh viraliaa |

Rare are the people in world who with their saintly heart do good to the evil.


ਅਉਸਰਿ ਆਪ ਛਲਾਇਂਦੇ ਤਿਨ੍ਹਾ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਛਲਿਆ ।੨੧।

अउसरि आप छलाइंदे तिन्हा अउसरु छलिआ ।२१।

aausar aap chhalaaeinde tinhaa aausar chhaliaa |21|

The commoners are duped by time i.e. they change according to the time, but the holy men succeed in deluding the time i.e. they remain free from the influence of time.

ਮੁਰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਰੀਦੁ ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

मुरदा होइ मुरीदु सो गुर गोरि समावै ।

muradaa hoe mureed so gur gor samaavai |

The disciple who remains dead (among hopes and desires) will ultimately enter into the grave of the Guru i.e. he will transform himself into Guru.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਓਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ।

सबद सुरति लिव लीणु होइ ओहु आपु गवावै ।

sabad surat liv leen hoe ohu aap gavaavai |

He merges his consciousness in the Word and loses his ego.


ਤਨੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਕਰਿ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਮਨੁ ਦਭੁ ਵਿਛਾਵੈ ।

तनु धरती करि धरमसाल मनु दभु विछावै ।

tan dharatee kar dharamasaal man dabh vichhaavai |

Accepting body in the form of earth as the resting place, he spreads mat of mind over it.


ਲਤਾਂ ਹੇਠਿ ਲਤਾੜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ।

लतां हेठि लताड़ीऐ गुर सबदु कमावै ।

lataan hetth lataarreeai gur sabad kamaavai |

Even if he gets trampled under the feet, he conducts himself according to the teachings of the Guru.


ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਨੀਵਾਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ।

भाइ भगति नीवाणु होइ गुरमति ठहरावै ।

bhaae bhagat neevaan hoe guramat tthaharaavai |

Getting imbued with the loving devotion, he becomes humble and stabilizes his mind.


ਵਰਸੈ ਨਿਝਰ ਧਾਰ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ।੨੨।੯।

वरसै निझर धार होइ संगति चलि आवै ।२२।९।

varasai nijhar dhaar hoe sangat chal aavai |22|9|

He himself moves towards the holy congregation and the grace of the Lord showers upon him.
