ਪਹਿਲਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਲੈ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਹੋਇ ਇਆਣਾ ।

पहिला गुरमुखि जनमु लै भै विचि वरतै होइ इआणा ।

pahilaa guramukh janam lai bhai vich varatai hoe eaanaa |

Having been born in this world, the gurmukh becoming innocent and ignorant, ducts himself in the fear of the Lord.


ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਲੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਖਰਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ।

गुर सिख लै गुरसिखु होइ भाइ भगति विचि खरा सिआणा ।

gur sikh lai gurasikh hoe bhaae bhagat vich kharaa siaanaa |

Adopting the teaching of the Guru becomes Gursikh and sustaining himself in the loving devotion, he leads a pure and intelligent life.


ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੰਨੈ ਸਮਝਿ ਮਾਣਿ ਮਹਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਮਾਣਾ ।

गुर सिख सुणि मंनै समझि माणि महति विचि रहै निमाणा ।

gur sikh sun manai samajh maan mehat vich rahai nimaanaa |

After listening to and understanding it, he accepts the teachings of the Guru and even earning the glories continues to be humble.


ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਲੁਭਾਣਾ ।

गुर सिख गुरसिखु पूजदा पैरी पै रहरासि लुभाणा ।

gur sikh gurasikh poojadaa pairee pai raharaas lubhaanaa |

In accordance with the teachings of the Guru, he worships the Gursikhs, and touching their feet and following their virtuous path, he becomes favorite of all.


ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਚਲਣੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਿਹਮਾਣਾ ।

गुर सिख मनहु न विसरै चलणु जाणि जुगति मिहमाणा ।

gur sikh manahu na visarai chalan jaan jugat mihamaanaa |

Guru's instruction is never forgotten by the Sikh, and he, having learnt the way of considering himself as a passing guest, spends his life (purposefully) here.


ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਨਿਵਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ।

गुर सिख मिठा बोलणा निवि चलणा गुरसिखु परवाणा ।

gur sikh mitthaa bolanaa niv chalanaa gurasikh paravaanaa |

The Sikh of the Guru speaks sweetly and accepts humility as the proper way of life.


ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮਿਲਿ ਖਾਣਾ ।੧।

घालि खाइ गुरसिख मिलि खाणा ।१।

ghaal khaae gurasikh mil khaanaa |1|

The Gurmukh, guru-oriented person, earns his livelihood by hard labor and shares his earnings with other Sikhs of the Guru.

ਦਿਸਟਿ ਦਰਸ ਲਿਵ ਸਾਵਧਾਨੁ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਚੇਤੰਨੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ।

दिसटि दरस लिव सावधानु सबद सुरति चेतंनु सिआणा ।

disatt daras liv saavadhaan sabad surat chetan siaanaa |

The vision of a gurmukh remains seated in his desire for the glimpse of the Lord, and by virtue of his watchful realization of the sabad, he acquires wisdom.


ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦਿੜੁ ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਮੇਲਾਣਾ ।

नामु दानु इसनानु दिड़ु मन बच करम करै मेलाणा ।

naam daan isanaan dirr man bach karam karai melaanaa |

Being steadfast in meditation, charity, and ablution, he maintains co-ordination in his mind, speech and actions.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਥੋੜਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਥੋੜਾ ਸਉਣਾ ਥੋੜਾ ਖਾਣਾ ।

गुरसिख थोड़ा बोलणा थोड़ा सउणा थोड़ा खाणा ।

gurasikh thorraa bolanaa thorraa saunaa thorraa khaanaa |

The Sikh of the Guru speaks less, sleeps less and eats little.


ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਰਮਾਣਾ ।

पर तन पर धन परहरै पर निंदा सुणि मनि सरमाणा ।

par tan par dhan paraharai par nindaa sun man saramaanaa |

Repudiating other's body and other's wealth, he avoids listening to the slander of others.


ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ।

गुर मूरति सतिगुर सबदु साधसंगति समसरि परवाणा ।

gur moorat satigur sabad saadhasangat samasar paravaanaa |

He accepts the presence of Guru equally in the shabad (Word) and the holy congregation.


ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਭਾਣਾ ।

इक मनि इकु अराधणा दुतीआ नासति भावै भाणा ।

eik man ik araadhanaa duteea naasat bhaavai bhaanaa |

With single-mindedness, he adores the one Lord, and having no sense of duality, he rejoices in the will of the Lord.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਦੈ ਤਾਣਿ ਨਿਤਾਣਾ ।੨।

गुरमुखि होदै ताणि निताणा ।२।

guramukh hodai taan nitaanaa |2|

Despite all his powers, the gurmukh considers himself meek and humble.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਦਿਸਈ ਹੋਂਦੀ ਅਖੀਂ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਸੋਈ ।

गुरमुखि रंगु न दिसई होंदी अखीं अंन्हा सोई ।

guramukh rang na disee hondee akheen anhaa soee |

He, who cannot see the grandeur of gurmukhs, is blind, despite his eyes.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਮਝਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਹੋਂਦੀ ਕੰਨੀਂ ਬੋਲਾ ਹੋਈ ।

गुरमुखि समझि न सकई होंदी कंनीं बोला होई ।

guramukh samajh na sakee hondee kaneen bolaa hoee |

He, who does not understand the idea of a gurmukh, is deaf, despite his ears.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਗਾਵਈ ਹੋਂਦੀ ਜੀਭੈ ਗੁੰਗਾ ਗੋਈ ।

गुरमुखि सबदु न गावई होंदी जीभै गुंगा गोई ।

guramukh sabad na gaavee hondee jeebhai gungaa goee |

He, who does not sing the hymns of Gurmukh, is dumb, despite having a tongue.


ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਦੀ ਵਾਸ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਕਟਾ ਹੋਂਦੇ ਨਕਿ ਅਲੋਈ ।

चरण कवल दी वास विणु नकटा होंदे नकि अलोई ।

charan kaval dee vaas vin nakattaa honde nak aloee |

Devoid of the fragrance of the lotus feet of the Guru, he is supposed to be with a clipped nose (brazen-faced) despite his lovely nose.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆਂ ਹੋਂਦੀ ਕਰੀਂ ਲੁੰਜਾ ਦੁਖ ਰੋਈ ।

गुरमुखि कार विहूणिआं होंदी करीं लुंजा दुख रोई ।

guramukh kaar vihooniaan hondee kareen lunjaa dukh roee |

A person, devoid of Gurmukh's sense of service, is a wailing cripple, his healthy hands notwithstanding and he goes on weeping.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਵਸਈ ਸੋ ਮਤਿ ਹੀਣੁ ਲਹਦਾ ਢੋਈ ।

गुरमति चिति न वसई सो मति हीणु लहदा ढोई ।

guramat chit na vasee so mat heen lahadaa dtoee |

One in whose heart, the wisdom of the Guru is not sustained, is a fool who gets no shelter anywhere.


ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਸਥੋਈ ।੩।

मूरख नालि न कोइ सथोई ।३।

moorakh naal na koe sathoee |3|

The idiot has no companion.

ਘੁਘੂ ਸੁਝੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਵਸਦੀ ਛਡਿ ਰਹੈ ਓਜਾੜੀ ।

घुघू सुझु न सुझई वसदी छडि रहै ओजाड़ी ।

ghughoo sujh na sujhee vasadee chhadd rahai ojaarree |

Owl does not have any thoughtful understanding, and leaving habitats, lives in deserted places.


ਇਲਿ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਨ ਪੜ੍ਹੈ ਚੂਹੇ ਖਾਇ ਉਡੇ ਦੇਹਾੜੀ ।

इलि पढ़ाई न पढ़ै चूहे खाइ उडे देहाड़ी ।

eil parrhaaee na parrhai choohe khaae udde dehaarree |

Kite cannot be taught texts and eating rats, keeps on flying the whole day.


ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਂਸ ਨੋ ਹਉਮੈ ਅੰਗਿ ਨ ਚੰਨਣ ਵਾੜੀ ।

वासु न आवै वांस नो हउमै अंगि न चंनण वाड़ी ।

vaas na aavai vaans no haumai ang na chanan vaarree |

Even being in the garden of sandal wood, the egotist bamboo does not get fragrant.


ਸੰਖੁ ਸਮੁੰਦਹੁ ਸਖਣਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੀਣਾ ਦੇਹ ਵਿਗਾੜੀ ।

संखु समुंदहु सखणा गुरमति हीणा देह विगाड़ी ।

sankh samundahu sakhanaa guramat heenaa deh vigaarree |

As the conch remains empty though living in the sea, the person devoid of the wisdom of Guru (gurmati) is spoiling his body.


ਸਿੰਮਲੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਨ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ਵਡਾ ਅਨਾੜੀ ।

सिंमलु बिरखु न सफलु होइ आपु गणाए वडा अनाड़ी ।

sinmal birakh na safal hoe aap ganaae vaddaa anaarree |

The cotton-silk tree does not bear fruit howsoever much that colorless may brag of its greatness.


ਮੂਰਖੁ ਫਕੜਿ ਪਵੈ ਰਿਹਾੜੀ ।੪।

मूरखु फकड़ि पवै रिहाड़ी ।४।

moorakh fakarr pavai rihaarree |4|

Only fools quarrel over trivialities.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਅਗੈ ਆਰਸੀ ਨਾਈ ਧਰਿ ਨ ਵਧਾਈ ਪਾਵੈ ।

अंन्हे अगै आरसी नाई धरि न वधाई पावै ।

anhe agai aarasee naaee dhar na vadhaaee paavai |

A barber showing mirror to a blind person, never gets the reward.


ਬੋਲੈ ਅਗੈ ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੂਮੁ ਨ ਡੂਮੁ ਕਵਾਇ ਪੈਨ੍ਹਾਵੈ ।

बोलै अगै गावीऐ सूमु न डूमु कवाइ पैन्हावै ।

bolai agai gaaveeai soom na ddoom kavaae painhaavai |

Singing before a deaf person is in vain and likewise a miser does not present a robe to his minstrel as a gift.


ਪੁਛੈ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਗੁੰਗਿਅਹੁ ਵਿਗੜੈ ਕੰਮੁ ਜਵਾਬੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ।

पुछै मसलति गुंगिअहु विगड़ै कंमु जवाबु न आवै ।

puchhai masalat gungiahu vigarrai kam javaab na aavai |

If the dumb is consulted on any issue, the issue will go worse, and he will not be able to answer.


ਫੁਲਵਾੜੀ ਵੜਿ ਗੁਣਗੁਣਾ ਮਾਲੀ ਨੋ ਨ ਇਨਾਮੁ ਦਿਵਾਵੈ ।

फुलवाड़ी वड़ि गुणगुणा माली नो न इनामु दिवावै ।

fulavaarree varr gunagunaa maalee no na inaam divaavai |

If a person devoid of the sense of smell goes to a garden, he cannot recommend the gardener for award.


ਲੂਲੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਵਿਆਹੀਐ ਕਿਵ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

लूले नालि विआहीऐ किव गलि मिलि कामणि गलि लावै ।

loole naal viaaheeai kiv gal mil kaaman gal laavai |

How could a woman, married to a cripple, embrace him.


ਸਭਨਾ ਚਾਲ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਲੰਗੜਾ ਕਰੇ ਲਖਾਉ ਲੰਗਾਵੈ ।

सभना चाल सुहावणी लंगड़ा करे लखाउ लंगावै ।

sabhanaa chaal suhaavanee langarraa kare lakhaau langaavai |

Where all others have a fair gait, the lame however he may pretend, would definitely be seen limping.


ਲੁਕੈ ਨ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਲਖਾਵੈ ।੫।

लुकै न मूरखु आपु लखावै ।५।

lukai na moorakh aap lakhaavai |5|

Thus, the fool never remains hidden, and he definitely exposes himself.

ਪਥਰੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਭਿਜਈ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਲਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਸੈ ।

पथरु मूलि न भिजई सउ वर्हिआ जलि अंदरि वसै ।

pathar mool na bhijee sau varhiaa jal andar vasai |

Even after remaining in water for a hundred years, the stone would not get wet at all.


ਪਥਰ ਖੇਤੁ ਨ ਜੰਮਈ ਚਾਰਿ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਇੰਦਰੁ ਵਰਸੈ ।

पथर खेतु न जंमई चारि महीने इंदरु वरसै ।

pathar khet na jamee chaar maheene indar varasai |

It may rain for four months continuously, but a stone would not sprout in the field.


ਪਥਰਿ ਚੰਨਣੁ ਰਗੜੀਏ ਚੰਨਣ ਵਾਂਗਿ ਨ ਪਥਰੁ ਘਸੈ ।

पथरि चंनणु रगड़ीए चंनण वांगि न पथरु घसै ।

pathar chanan ragarree chanan vaang na pathar ghasai |

A stone grinding sandal, never gets worn off like sandal.


ਸਿਲ ਵਟੇ ਨਿਤ ਪੀਸਦੇ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਜਾਣੇ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਰਸੈ ।

सिल वटे नित पीसदे रस कस जाणे वासु न रसै ।

sil vatte nit peesade ras kas jaane vaas na rasai |

Grinding stones always grind the material but never know about the taste and virtues of the things ground.


ਚਕੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਸਹੰਸ ਵਾਰ ਖਾਇ ਨ ਪੀਐ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਤਸੈ ।

चकी फिरै सहंस वार खाइ न पीऐ भुख न तसै ।

chakee firai sahans vaar khaae na peeai bhukh na tasai |

The grinding stone moves around thousands of times, but it never feels hunger or thirst.


ਪਥਰ ਘੜੈ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਹੇਠਿ ਉਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਘੜਾ ਵਿਣਸੈ ।

पथर घड़ै वरतणा हेठि उते होइ घड़ा विणसै ।

pathar gharrai varatanaa hetth ute hoe gharraa vinasai |

The relationship between the stone and the pitcher is such that pitcher has to perish whether the stone strikes the pitcher or vice versa.


ਮੂਰਖ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਜਸ ਅਪਜਸੈ ।੬।

मूरख सुरति न जस अपजसै ।६।

moorakh surat na jas apajasai |6|

The stupid does not understand the difference between fame and infamy.

ਪਾਰਸ ਪਥਰ ਸੰਗੁ ਹੈ ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸਿ ਨ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਵੈ ।

पारस पथर संगु है पारस परसि न कंचनु होवै ।

paaras pathar sang hai paaras paras na kanchan hovai |

Ordinary stone may be in contact with the philosopher's stone, but it does not get transformed into gold.


ਹੀਰੇ ਮਾਣਕ ਪਥਰਹੁ ਪਥਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹਾਰਿ ਪਰੋਵੈ ।

हीरे माणक पथरहु पथर कोइ न हारि परोवै ।

heere maanak patharahu pathar koe na haar parovai |

Diamonds and rubies are extracted from the stones, but the stones cannot be stringed as a necklace.


ਵਟਿ ਜਵਾਹਰੁ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਮੁਲਿ ਨ ਤੁਲਿ ਵਿਕਾਇ ਸਮੋਵੈ ।

वटि जवाहरु तोलीऐ मुलि न तुलि विकाइ समोवै ।

vatt javaahar toleeai mul na tul vikaae samovai |

The jewels are weighed with weights, but the weights cannot equate in value with the jewels.


ਪਥਰ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਸਟ ਧਾਤੁ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਸੁਵੰਨੁ ਅਲੋਵੈ ।

पथर अंदरि असट धातु पारसु परसि सुवंनु अलोवै ।

pathar andar asatt dhaat paaras paras suvan alovai |

Eight metals (alloys) remain amidst stones, but they convert into gold by the touch of philosopher's stone alone.


ਪਥਰੁ ਫਟਕ ਝਲਕਣਾ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਹੋਇ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਗੋਵੈ ।

पथरु फटक झलकणा बहु रंगी होइ रंगु न गोवै ।

pathar fattak jhalakanaa bahu rangee hoe rang na govai |

Crystal stone shines in many colors but still remains a mere stone.


ਪਥਰ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਸਾਉ ਹੈ ਮਨ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਪੁ ਵਿਗੋਵੈ ।

पथर वासु न साउ है मन कठोरु होइ आपु विगोवै ।

pathar vaas na saau hai man katthor hoe aap vigovai |

Stone has neither fragrance nor taste; the hard-hearted one simply destroys itself.


ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖਾਈ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਰੋਵੈ ।੭।

करि मूरखाई मूरखु रोवै ।७।

kar moorakhaaee moorakh rovai |7|

The foolish goes on lamenting his own stupidity.

ਜਿਉਂ ਮਣਿ ਕਾਲੇ ਸਪ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਵਿਸੂ ਭਰਿਆ ।

जिउं मणि काले सप सिरि सार न जाणै विसू भरिआ ।

jiaun man kaale sap sir saar na jaanai visoo bhariaa |

Having jewel in its head and knowing it not, the snake remains filled with poison.


ਜਾਣੁ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗ ਤਨਿ ਝਾੜਾਂ ਸਿੰਙਦਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਫਰਿਆ ।

जाणु कथूरी मिरग तनि झाड़ां सिंङदा फिरै अफरिआ ।

jaan kathooree mirag tan jhaarraan singadaa firai afariaa |

It is known that musk remains in the body of deer, but it goes on smelling it frantically in the bushes.


ਜਿਉਂ ਕਰਿ ਮੋਤੀ ਸਿਪ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧਰਿਆ ।

जिउं करि मोती सिप विचि मरमु न जाणै अंदरि धरिआ ।

jiaun kar motee sip vich maram na jaanai andar dhariaa |

The pearl dwells in the shell but the shell does not know the mystery.


ਜਿਉਂ ਗਾਈਂ ਥਣਿ ਚਿਚੁੜੀ ਦੁਧੁ ਨ ਪੀਐ ਲੋਹੂ ਜਰਿਆ ।

जिउं गाईं थणि चिचुड़ी दुधु न पीऐ लोहू जरिआ ।

jiaun gaaeen than chichurree dudh na peeai lohoo jariaa |

The tick stuck with the teats of cow, does not drink the milk but sucks the blood only.


ਬਗਲਾ ਤਰਣਿ ਨ ਸਿਖਿਓ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨ੍ਹਾਇ ਨ ਪਥਰੁ ਤਰਿਆ ।

बगला तरणि न सिखिओ तीरथि न्हाइ न पथरु तरिआ ।

bagalaa taran na sikhio teerath nhaae na pathar tariaa |

Living in water, the crane never learns how to swim; and the stone, in spite of its ablutions at various pilgrimage centers, cannot swim and go across.


ਨਾਲਿ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਭਲੀ ਭਿਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਜਹੁ ਕਾਜੁ ਨ ਸਰਿਆ ।

नालि सिआणे भली भिख मूरख राजहु काजु न सरिआ ।

naal siaane bhalee bhikh moorakh raajahu kaaj na sariaa |

That is why, begging in the company of wise people is better than ruling over a kingdom along with fools.


ਮੇਖੀ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਗਾੜੈ ਖਰਿਆ ।੮।

मेखी होइ विगाड़ै खरिआ ।८।

mekhee hoe vigaarrai khariaa |8|

कटणु चटणु कुतिआं कुतै हलक तै मनु सूगावै ।

kattan chattan kutiaan kutai halak tai man soogaavai |

The dog only bites and licks, but if it goes mad, one's mind becomes scared of it.


ਠੰਢਾ ਤਤਾ ਕੋਇਲਾ ਕਾਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਹਥੁ ਜਲਾਵੈ ।

ठंढा तता कोइला काला करि कै हथु जलावै ।

tthandtaa tataa koeilaa kaalaa kar kai hath jalaavai |

Coal, whether cold or hot, makes the hand black or burns it.


ਜਿਉ ਚਕਚੂੰਧਰ ਸਪ ਦੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਕੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਵੈ ।

जिउ चकचूंधर सप दी अंन्हा कोढ़ी करि दिखलावै ।

jiau chakachoondhar sap dee anhaa korrhee kar dikhalaavai |

Mole caught by snake makes it blind or leper.


ਜਾਣੁ ਰਸਉਲੀ ਦੇਹ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਢੀ ਪੀੜ ਰਖੀ ਸਰਮਾਵੈ ।

जाणु रसउली देह विचि वढी पीड़ रखी सरमावै ।

jaan rsaulee deh vich vadtee peerr rakhee saramaavai |

Tumor in the body when operated upon gives pain, and if it is kept untouched, it is a cause for embarrassment.


ਵੰਸਿ ਕਪੂਤੁ ਕੁਲਛਣਾ ਛਡੈ ਬਣੈ ਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

वंसि कपूतु कुलछणा छडै बणै न विचि समावै ।

vans kapoot kulachhanaa chhaddai banai na vich samaavai |

A wicked son can neither be repudiated nor he can adjust in the family.


ਮੂਰਖ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਈਐ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਵੈਰੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਵਲਾਵੈ ।

मूरख हेतु न लाईऐ परहरि वैरु अलिपतु वलावै ।

moorakh het na laaeeai parahar vair alipat valaavai |

Therefore, the stupid should not be loved, and while enmity towards him should be avoided, detachment towards him should be maintained.


ਦੁਹੀਂ ਪਵਾੜੀਂ ਦੁਖਿ ਵਿਹਾਵੈ ।੯।

दुहीं पवाड़ीं दुखि विहावै ।९।

duheen pavaarreen dukh vihaavai |9|

Otherwise, both the ways, suffering is bound to occur.

ਜਿਉ ਹਾਥੀ ਦਾ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਣਾ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਲਿ ਖੇਹ ਉਡਾਵੈ ।

जिउ हाथी दा न्हावणा बाहरि निकलि खेह उडावै ।

jiau haathee daa nhaavanaa baahar nikal kheh uddaavai |

As the elephant washes its body and coming out of water, it throws mud over it.


ਜਿਉ ਊਠੈ ਦਾ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਣਕ ਜਵਾਹਾਂ ਖਾਵੈ ।

जिउ ऊठै दा खावणा परहरि कणक जवाहां खावै ।

jiau aootthai daa khaavanaa parahar kanak javaahaan khaavai |

As the camel avoiding wheat, eats low variety of corn named javas.


ਕਮਲੇ ਦਾ ਕਛੋਟੜਾ ਕਦੇ ਲਕ ਕਦੇ ਸੀਸਿ ਵਲਾਵੈ ।

कमले दा कछोटड़ा कदे लक कदे सीसि वलावै ।

kamale daa kachhottarraa kade lak kade sees valaavai |

The loin cloth of mad man is sometimes worn by him around his waist and sometimes on his head.


ਜਿਉਂ ਕਰਿ ਟੁੰਡੇ ਹਥੜਾ ਸੋ ਚੁਤੀਂ ਸੋ ਵਾਤਿ ਵਤਾਵੈ ।

जिउं करि टुंडे हथड़ा सो चुतीं सो वाति वतावै ।

jiaun kar ttundde hatharraa so chuteen so vaat vataavai |

The hand of a cripple sometime goes to his buttocks and the same one sometimes to his mouth when yawning.


ਸੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਣੁ ਲੁਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਖਿਣੁ ਜਲਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਖਿਨ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

संन्ही जाणु लुहार दी खिणु जलि विचि खिन अगनि समावै ।

sanhee jaan luhaar dee khin jal vich khin agan samaavai |

Blacksmith's pincers are sometimes put in fire and the next moment in water.


ਮਖੀ ਬਾਣੁ ਕੁਬਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਲੈ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ।

मखी बाणु कुबाणु है लै दुरगंध सुगंध न भावै ।

makhee baan kubaan hai lai duragandh sugandh na bhaavai |

Evil is the nature of fly, it prefers foul smell to fragrance.


ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ ਕਿਹੁ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ।੧੦।

मूरख दा किहु हथि न आवै ।१०।

moorakh daa kihu hath na aavai |10|

Likewise, the fool gets nothing.

ਤੋਤਾ ਨਲੀ ਨ ਛਡਈ ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀਂ ਫਾਥਾ ਚੀਕੈ ।

तोता नली न छडई आपण हथीं फाथा चीकै ।

totaa nalee na chhaddee aapan hatheen faathaa cheekai |

The parrot does not leave the rod, and caught in it, cries and wails.


ਬਾਂਦਰੁ ਮੁਠਿ ਨ ਛਡਈ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਨਚੈ ਝੀਕਣੁ ਝੀਕੈ ।

बांदरु मुठि न छडई घरि घरि नचै झीकणु झीकै ।

baandar mutth na chhaddee ghar ghar nachai jheekan jheekai |

Monkey too does not leave the handful of corn (in the pitcher) and suffers dancing and gritting its teeth from door to door.


ਗਦਹੁ ਅੜੀ ਨ ਛਡਈ ਚੀਘੀ ਪਉਦੀ ਹੀਕਣਿ ਹੀਕੈ ।

गदहु अड़ी न छडई चीघी पउदी हीकणि हीकै ।

gadahu arree na chhaddee cheeghee paudee heekan heekai |

The donkey also when beaten, kicks and brays loudly but does not shed its stubbornness.


ਕੁਤੇ ਚਕੀ ਚਟਣੀ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਸਿਧੀ ਧ੍ਰੀਕਣਿ ਧ੍ਰੀਕੈ ।

कुते चकी चटणी पूछ न सिधी ध्रीकणि ध्रीकै ।

kute chakee chattanee poochh na sidhee dhreekan dhreekai |

The dog does not leave licking the flour mill, and its tail though pulled, never turns straight.


ਕਰਨਿ ਕੁਫਕੜ ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਸਪ ਗਏ ਫੜਿ ਫਾਟਨਿ ਲੀਕੈ ।

करनि कुफकड़ मूरखां सप गए फड़ि फाटनि लीकै ।

karan kufakarr moorakhaan sap ge farr faattan leekai |

The foolish ones boast foolishly and beat the track while the snake has gone away.


ਪਗ ਲਹਾਇ ਗਣਾਇ ਸਰੀਕੈ ।੧੧।

पग लहाइ गणाइ सरीकै ।११।

pag lahaae ganaae sareekai |11|

Even when humiliated by their turbans taken off their heads, they count themselves superior to their collaterals.

ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਆਖੇ ਲੜਿ ਮਰੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਖਾ ।

अंन्हा आखे लड़ि मरै खुसी होवै सुणि नाउ सुजाखा ।

anhaa aakhe larr marai khusee hovai sun naau sujaakhaa |

The blind stupid one fights to the finish if he is called blind (intellectually) and feels flattered if called eyed (a wise one).


ਭੋਲਾ ਆਖੇ ਭਲਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਅਹਮਕੁ ਜਾਣਿ ਅਜਾਣਿ ਨ ਭਾਖਾ ।

भोला आखे भला मंनि अहमकु जाणि अजाणि न भाखा ।

bholaa aakhe bhalaa man ahamak jaan ajaan na bhaakhaa |

Calling him simple minded makes him feel good, but he would not talk to one, who tells him that he is a silly person.


ਧੋਰੀ ਆਖੈ ਹਸਿ ਦੇ ਬਲਦ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਕਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਮਾਖਾ ।

धोरी आखै हसि दे बलद वखाणि करै मनि माखा ।

dhoree aakhai has de balad vakhaan karai man maakhaa |

He smiles at being called a carrier of the burden (of all) but feels angry when told that he is just an ox.


ਕਾਉਂ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਖਾਇ ਨ ਭਾਖ ਸੁਭਾਖਾ ।

काउं सिआणप जाणदा विसटा खाइ न भाख सुभाखा ।

kaaun siaanap jaanadaa visattaa khaae na bhaakh subhaakhaa |

The crow knows many skills, but it crows jarringly and eats faeces.


ਨਾਉ ਸੁਰੀਤ ਕੁਰੀਤ ਦਾ ਮੁਸਕ ਬਿਲਾਈ ਗਾਂਡੀ ਸਾਖਾ ।

नाउ सुरीत कुरीत दा मुसक बिलाई गांडी साखा ।

naau sureet kureet daa musak bilaaee gaanddee saakhaa |

To the bad customs, the stupid refers as good conduct and calls the indurated faeces of cat, fragrant.


ਹੇਠਿ ਖੜਾ ਥੂ ਥੂ ਕਰੈ ਗਿਦੜ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਦਾਖਾ ।

हेठि खड़ा थू थू करै गिदड़ हथि न आवै दाखा ।

hetth kharraa thoo thoo karai gidarr hath na aavai daakhaa |

As the jackal unable to reach and eat grapes on tree, spits over them, so is the case of a fool.


ਬੋਲ ਵਿਗਾੜੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਭੇਡਾਖਾ ।੧੨।

बोल विगाड़ु मूरखु भेडाखा ।१२।

bol vigaarr moorakh bheddaakhaa |12|

The foolish person is a blind follower like sheep, and his obdurate talk spoils his relationship with everyone.

ਰੁਖਾਂ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੁਰੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਅਰੰਡੁ ਅਵਾਈ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ।

रुखां विचि कुरुखु है अरंडु अवाई आपु गणाए ।

rukhaan vich kurukh hai arandd avaaee aap ganaae |

The worst possible among the trees is castor tree which undeservedly makes itself noticed.


ਪਿਦਾ ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੇਰੂਆਂ ਬਹਿ ਬਹਿ ਡਾਲੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਫਾਏ ।

पिदा जिउ पंखेरूआं बहि बहि डाली बहुतु बफाए ।

pidaa jiau pankherooaan beh beh ddaalee bahut bafaae |

Pidd jiu, a very small among the birds, goes on jumping from one branch to another and feels much inflated.


ਭੇਡ ਭਿਵਿੰਗਾ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਰੈ ਤਰਣਾਪੈ ਦਿਹਿ ਚਾਰਿ ਵਲਾਏ ।

भेड भिविंगा मुहु करै तरणापै दिहि चारि वलाए ।

bhedd bhivingaa muhu karai taranaapai dihi chaar valaae |

The sheep during its brief youth bleats loudly (proudly).


ਮੁਹੁ ਅਖੀ ਨਕੁ ਕਨ ਜਿਉਂ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਾਂਡਿ ਸਦਾਏ ।

मुहु अखी नकु कन जिउं इंद्रीआं विचि गांडि सदाए ।

muhu akhee nak kan jiaun indreean vich gaandd sadaae |

Anus also feels proud of being called one of the organs like eye, ear, nose and mouth.


ਮੀਆ ਘਰਹੁ ਨਿਕਾਲੀਐ ਤਰਕਸੁ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਟੰਗਵਾਏ ।

मीआ घरहु निकालीऐ तरकसु दरवाजे टंगवाए ।

meea gharahu nikaaleeai tarakas daravaaje ttangavaae |

The husband, even while kicked out of home by his wife, hangs his quiver at the door (to show his masculinity).


ਮੂਰਖ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਾਣਸਾਂ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਰਬੁ ਕਰੈ ਆਖਾਏ ।

मूरख अंदरि माणसां विणु गुण गरबु करै आखाए ।

moorakh andar maanasaan vin gun garab karai aakhaae |

Similarly, among the human beings, the stupid one, devoid of all virtues, feels proud of himself and persistently tries to get noticed.


ਮਜਲਸ ਬੈਠਾ ਆਪੁ ਲਖਾਏ ।੧੩।

मजलस बैठा आपु लखाए ।१३।

majalas baitthaa aap lakhaae |13|

In an assembly, he beholds only his own self (and not the wisdom of others).

ਮੂਰਖ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਬੋਲੁ ਨ ਸਮਝੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ।

मूरख तिस नो आखीऐ बोलु न समझै बोलि न जाणै ।

moorakh tis no aakheeai bol na samajhai bol na jaanai |

Foolish is he who neither understands the matter in hand nor speaks well.


ਹੋਰੋ ਕਿਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਛੀਐ ਹੋਰੋ ਕਿਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।

होरो किहु करि पुछीऐ होरो किहु करि आखि वखाणै ।

horo kihu kar puchheeai horo kihu kar aakh vakhaanai |

He is asked something else, and he replies altogether about something different.


ਸਿਖ ਦੇਇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਅਰਥੁ ਅਨਰਥੁ ਮਨੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਣੈ ।

सिख देइ समझाईऐ अरथु अनरथु मनै विचि आणै ।

sikh dee samajhaaeeai arath anarath manai vich aanai |

Ill advised, he misinterprets it and brings forth from his mind the contrary meaning.


ਵਡਾ ਅਸਮਝੁ ਨ ਸਮਝਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਹੋਇ ਹੈਰਾਣੈ ।

वडा असमझु न समझई सुरति विहूणा होइ हैराणै ।

vaddaa asamajh na samajhee surat vihoonaa hoe hairaanai |

He is a big idiot, who does not understand, and being devoid of consciousness is ever surprised and confused.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਣਈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੈ ।

गुरमति चिति न आणई दुरमति मित्रु सत्रु परवाणै ।

guramat chit na aanee duramat mitru satru paravaanai |

He never cherishes in his heart the wisdom of the Guru, and due to his evil intellect, considers his friend as a foe.


ਅਗਨੀ ਸਪਹੁਂ ਵਰਜੀਐ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕਰੈ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ।

अगनी सपहुं वरजीऐ गुण विचि अवगुण करै धिङाणै ।

aganee sapahun varajeeai gun vich avagun karai dhingaanai |

The wisdom of not going near snake and fire, he takes otherwise, and forcibly turns virtue into vice.


ਮੂਤੈ ਰੋਵੈ ਮਾ ਨ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ।੧੪।

मूतै रोवै मा न सिञाणै ।१४।

mootai rovai maa na siyaanai |14|

He behaves like an infant who does not recognize his mother and goes on crying and pissing.

ਰਾਹੁ ਛਡਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਵੈ ਆਗੂ ਨੋ ਭੁਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ।

राहु छडि उझड़ि पवै आगू नो भुला करि जाणै ।

raahu chhadd ujharr pavai aagoo no bhulaa kar jaanai |

He, who leaving the path away, follows a trackless waste, and considers his leader gone astray, is a fool.


ਬੇੜੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹਾਲੀਐ ਕੁਦਿ ਪਵੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਹਣ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ।

बेड़े विचि बहालीऐ कुदि पवै विचि वहण धिङाणै ।

berre vich bahaaleeai kud pavai vich vehan dhingaanai |

Seated in the boat, he jumps impulsively into the current.


ਸੁਘੜਾਂ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹਿਠਿਆਂ ਬੋਲਿ ਵਿਗਾੜਿ ਉਘਾੜਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।

सुघड़ां विचि बहिठिआं बोलि विगाड़ि उघाड़ि वखाणै ।

sugharraan vich bahitthiaan bol vigaarr ughaarr vakhaanai |

Sitting among the noble ones, he, due to his ill talk, stands exposed.


ਸੁਘੜਾਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਰਤੀਹਾਣੈ ।

सुघड़ां मूरख जाणदा आपि सुघड़ु होइ विरतीहाणै ।

sugharraan moorakh jaanadaa aap sugharr hoe virateehaanai |

The wise he considers stupid and hides his own conduct as a clever one.


ਦਿਹ ਨੋ ਰਾਤਿ ਵਖਾਣਦਾ ਚਾਮਚੜਿਕ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਟਾਨਾਣੈ ।

दिह नो राति वखाणदा चामचड़िक जिवें टानाणै ।

dih no raat vakhaanadaa chaamacharrik jiven ttaanaanai |

Like a bat and a glow worm, he describes the day as night.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਣੈ ।੧੫।

गुरमति मूरखु चिति न आणै ।१५।

guramat moorakh chit na aanai |15|

The wisdom of Guru never resides in the heart of a foolish person.

ਵੈਦਿ ਚੰਗੇਰੀ ਊਠਣੀ ਲੈ ਸਿਲ ਵਟਾ ਕਚਰਾ ਭੰਨਾ ।

वैदि चंगेरी ऊठणी लै सिल वटा कचरा भंना ।

vaid changeree aootthanee lai sil vattaa kacharaa bhanaa |

A physician, in order to cure a female camel of a melon stuck in its throat, crushed the melon in its throat by hitting outside the neck with his pestle and mortar.


ਸੇਵਕਿ ਸਿਖੀ ਵੈਦਗੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਬੁਢੀ ਰੋਵਨਿ ਰੰਨਾ ।

सेवकि सिखी वैदगी मारी बुढी रोवनि रंना ।

sevak sikhee vaidagee maaree budtee rovan ranaa |

His servant (who was watching) thought he had mastered the art, and killed an old ill woman by the same process, causing general lamentation among women.


ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਵਲੈ ਪਉਦੀ ਉਘੜਿ ਗਏ ਸੁ ਕੰਨਾ ।

पकड़ि चलाइआ रावलै पउदी उघड़ि गए सु कंना ।

pakarr chalaaeaa raavalai paudee ugharr ge su kanaa |

The people seized the pretending physician and produced him before the king, who ordered for him a thorough beating, upon which he came to his senses.


ਪੁਛੈ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਿਉਨੁ ਉਘੜਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਾਜੁ ਪਰਛੰਨਾ ।

पुछै आखि वखाणिउनु उघड़ि गइआ पाजु परछंना ।

puchhai aakh vakhaaniaun ugharr geaa paaj parachhanaa |

When questioned, he confessed the whole circumstance, and his imposture was thus exposed.


ਪਾਰਖੂਆ ਚੁਣਿ ਕਢਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਕਚਕੜਾ ਨ ਰਲੈ ਰਤੰਨਾ ।

पारखूआ चुणि कढिआ जिउ कचकड़ा न रलै रतंना ।

paarakhooaa chun kadtiaa jiau kachakarraa na ralai ratanaa |

The wise men threw him out, as a piece of glass cannot rank with jewels.


ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅਕਲੀ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਵਾਂਸਹੁ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਗੰਨਾ ।

मूरखु अकली बाहरा वांसहु मूलि न होवी गंना ।

moorakh akalee baaharaa vaansahu mool na hovee ganaa |

A fool has no sense, as a bamboo could never equal sugarcane.


ਮਾਣਸ ਦੇਹੀ ਪਸੂ ਉਪੰਨਾ ।੧੬।

माणस देही पसू उपंना ।१६।

maanas dehee pasoo upanaa |16|

He, in fact, is an animal born in the form of a man.

ਮਹਾਦੇਵ ਦੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਹੈ ਦੇ ਪੁਤੈ ।

महादेव दी सेव करि वरु पाइआ साहै दे पुतै ।

mahaadev dee sev kar var paaeaa saahai de putai |

The son of a banker served Mahadev and got a boon (of attaining wealth).


ਦਰਬੁ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਰੇਵੜੈ ਆਏ ਵੜੇ ਘਰਿ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਉਤੈ ।

दरबु सरूप सरेवड़ै आए वड़े घरि अंदरि उतै ।

darab saroop sarevarrai aae varre ghar andar utai |

Wealth came to his house in the guise of sadhus of gramanic tradition.


ਜਿਉ ਹਥਿਆਰੀ ਮਾਰੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਦਰਬ ਹੋਇ ਧੜਧੁਤੈ ।

जिउ हथिआरी मारीअनि तिउ तिउ दरब होइ धड़धुतै ।

jiau hathiaaree maareean tiau tiau darab hoe dharradhutai |

As they were beaten, heaps of money emerged there in his house.


ਬੁਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਡਿਠਿਓਨੁ ਨਾਈ ਚੈਨੁ ਨ ਬੈਠੇ ਸੁਤੈ ।

बुती करदे डिठिओनु नाई चैनु न बैठे सुतै ।

butee karade dditthion naaee chain na baitthe sutai |

A barber working in the house also saw this scene, and he becoming restive, lost his sleep.


ਮਾਰੇ ਆਣਿ ਸਰੇਵੜੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਦੀਬਾਣਿ ਮਸਾਣਿ ਅਛੁਤੈ ।

मारे आणि सरेवड़े सुणि दीबाणि मसाणि अछुतै ।

maare aan sarevarre sun deebaan masaan achhutai |

Availing an opportunity, he killed all the sadhus, and the matter of the innocent victims came to the court of law.


ਮਥੈ ਵਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਆ ਵਾਲ ਛਡਾਇਅਨਿ ਕਿਸ ਦੈ ਬੁਤੈ ।

मथै वालि पछाड़िआ वाल छडाइअनि किस दै बुतै ।

mathai vaal pachhaarriaa vaal chhaddaaeian kis dai butai |

Catching hold from his hair, he was thrashed. Now by what power, he will get rescued from that clutch.


ਮੂਰਖੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਬੀਉ ਕੁਰੁਤੈ ।੧੭।

मूरखु बीजै बीउ कुरुतै ।१७।

The foolish sows seeds out of season (and suffers loss).

ਗੋਸਟਿ ਗਾਂਗੇ ਤੇਲੀਐ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਗੁ ਦੇਖੈ ।

गोसटि गांगे तेलीऐ पंडित नालि होवै जगु देखै ।

gosatt gaange teleeai panddit naal hovai jag dekhai |

A discussion between Gangu, the oilman, and a pandit was being witnessed by one and all.


ਖੜੀ ਕਰੈ ਇਕ ਅੰਗੁਲੀ ਗਾਂਗਾ ਦੁਇ ਵੇਖਾਲੈ ਰੇਖੈ ।

खड़ी करै इक अंगुली गांगा दुइ वेखालै रेखै ।

kharree karai ik angulee gaangaa due vekhaalai rekhai |

Showing one finger to Gangu, the pandit indicated that the Lord is one. But Gangu thought that he wanted to extract his (Ganges) one eye and hence he showed two fingers, indicating that he will bring out both of his (pandit's) eyes.


ਫੇਰਿ ਉਚਾਇ ਪੰਜਾਂਗੁਲਾ ਗਾਂਗਾ ਮੁਠਿ ਹਲਾਇ ਅਲੇਖੈ ।

फेरि उचाइ पंजांगुला गांगा मुठि हलाइ अलेखै ।

fer uchaae panjaangulaa gaangaa mutth halaae alekhai |

Pandit now raised five fingers to show that his two forms are due to the five elements, but, considering the pandit as indicating that with five fingers he would scratch the face of Gangu, Gangu brandished his fist showing that he would kill him by the stroke of his fist. Now pandit felt that he was being made to understand that unity of five elements was the cause of the creation.


ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਹਾਰਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ਭੇਖੈ ।

पैरीं पै उठि चलिआ पंडितु हारि भुलावै भेखै ।

paireen pai utth chaliaa panddit haar bhulaavai bhekhai |

Mistakingly, the pandit accepted his defeat and fell at his opponent's feet and left the place.


ਨਿਰਗੁਣੁ ਸਰਗੁਣੁ ਅੰਗ ਦੁਇ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਪੰਜਿ ਮਿਲਨਿ ਸਰੇਖੈ ।

निरगुणु सरगुणु अंग दुइ परमेसरु पंजि मिलनि सरेखै ।

niragun saragun ang due paramesar panj milan sarekhai |

The two dimensions of Lord - nirgun (beyond all virtues) and sargun (with all virtues). Unity of five elements was the cause of the creation.


ਅਖੀਂ ਦੋਵੈਂ ਭੰਨਸਾਂ ਮੁਕੀ ਲਾਇ ਹਲਾਇ ਨਿਮੇਖੈ ।

अखीं दोवैं भंनसां मुकी लाइ हलाइ निमेखै ।

akheen dovain bhanasaan mukee laae halaae nimekhai |

In fact, Gangu had meant that he would bring out his eyes and attack with a tight fist, but this was interpreted differently by the pandit.


ਮੂਰਖ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਿਸੇਖੈ ।੧੮।

मूरख पंडितु सुरति विसेखै ।१८।

moorakh panddit surat visekhai |18|

Thus because of his specific thinking, even the pandit was proved a fool.

ਠੰਢੇ ਖੂਹਹੁੰ ਨ੍ਹਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਗ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਨੰਗੈ ।

ठंढे खूहहुं न्हाइ कै पग विसारि आइआ सिरि नंगै ।

tthandte khoohahun nhaae kai pag visaar aaeaa sir nangai |

Having taken bath on the well, a person forgot his turban and returned home bare headed.


ਘਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੰਨਾਂ ਕਮਲੀਆਂ ਧੁਸੀ ਲੀਤੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਢੰਗੈ ।

घर विचि रंनां कमलीआं धुसी लीती देखि कुढंगै ।

ghar vich ranaan kamaleean dhusee leetee dekh kudtangai |

Seeing his improper conduct (of being bare headed), the silly women started weeping and wailing (Seeing turbanless master of the house they conjectured the death of someone in the family).


ਰੰਨਾਂ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਿਟੰਦੀਆਂ ਢਾਹਾਂ ਮਾਰੈਂ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਗੈ ।

रंनां देखि पिटंदीआं ढाहां मारैं होइ निसंगै ।

ranaan dekh pittandeean dtaahaan maarain hoe nisangai |

Seeing the weeping women, others too, began mourning.


ਲੋਕ ਸਿਆਪੇ ਆਇਆ ਰੰਨਾਂ ਪੁਰਸ ਜੁੜੇ ਲੈ ਪੰਗੈ ।

लोक सिआपे आइआ रंनां पुरस जुड़े लै पंगै ।

lok siaape aaeaa ranaan puras jurre lai pangai |

People gathered and sitting in lines started condoling with the family.


ਨਾਇਣ ਪੁਛਦੀ ਪਿਟਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੈ ਨਾਇ ਅਲ੍ਹਾਣੀ ਅੰਗੈ ।

नाइण पुछदी पिटदीआं किस दै नाइ अल्हाणी अंगै ।

naaein puchhadee pittadeean kis dai naae alhaanee angai |

Now the barber woman who leads the mourning on occasions, asked as to who is to be wept and whose funeral she should lead, i.e. what is the name of the dead.


ਸਹੁਰੇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਉਣ ਮੁਆ ਨੂਹ ਉਤਰੁ ਮੰਗੈ ।

सहुरे पुछहु जाइ कै कउण मुआ नूह उतरु मंगै ।

sahure puchhahu jaae kai kaun muaa nooh utar mangai |

The daughter-in-law of family hinted towards father-in-law to elicit answer to this question (because he was found bare headed).


ਕਾਵਾਂ ਰੌਲਾ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਸੰਗੈ ।੧੯।

कावां रौला मूरखु संगै ।१९।

kaavaan raualaa moorakh sangai |19|

In the assembly of the fools, such cawing takes place (because crows also listening to one voice start cawing jointly).

ਜੇ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਸਮਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਛਾਂਵ ਨ ਧੁਪਾ ।

जे मूरखु समझाईऐ समझै नाही छांव न धुपा ।

je moorakh samajhaaeeai samajhai naahee chhaanv na dhupaa |

Even if told about the shade and the sunshine, the fool does not understand it.


ਅਖੀਂ ਪਰਖਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਪਿਤਲ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਕੈਹਾਂ ਰੁਪਾ ।

अखीं परखि न जाणई पितल सुइना कैहां रुपा ।

akheen parakh na jaanee pital sueinaa kaihaan rupaa |

With his eyes, he cannot distinguish between brass and bronze or gold and silver.


ਸਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਲ ਘਿਅ ਧਰਿਆ ਕੋਲਿ ਘੜੋਲਾ ਕੁਪਾ ।

साउ न जाणै तेल घिअ धरिआ कोलि घड़ोला कुपा ।

saau na jaanai tel ghia dhariaa kol gharrolaa kupaa |

He cannot know the difference of taste between the pot of ghee and an oil vessel.


ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਤੁਲਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਘੁਪਾ ।

सुरति विहूणा राति दिहु चानणु तुलि अन्हेरा घुपा ।

surat vihoonaa raat dihu chaanan tul anheraa ghupaa |

Day and night, he is devoid of consciousness and to him, light and darkness are the same.


ਵਾਸੁ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਥੋਮ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕੁਲੀ ਅਧਉੜੀ ਤੁਪਾ ।

वासु कथूरी थोम दी मिहर कुली अधउड़ी तुपा ।

vaas kathooree thom dee mihar kulee adhaurree tupaa |

Fragrance of musk and odor of garlic or stitching of velvet and hide are the same for him.


ਵੈਰੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਸਮਝਈ ਰੰਗੁ ਸੁਰੰਗ ਕੁਰੰਗੁ ਅਛੁਪਾ ।

वैरी मित्र न समझई रंगु सुरंग कुरंगु अछुपा ।

vairee mitr na samajhee rang surang kurang achhupaa |

He does not identify a friend and an enemy and remains completely unconcerned towards the bad or good color (of life).
