As in betel leaf, mixing of catechu, lime and betel nut makes a nice color, similarly, gurmukh way of life consisting of all the four varnas is beautiful.

पर तन पर धन पर निंद मेटि नामु दानु इसनानु दिड़ाइआ ।

par tan par dhan par nind mett naam daan isanaan dirraaeaa |

Holding (me) back from other's body, wealth and slander, the true Guru, has made me resolute for the practice of meditation on Lord's name, charity and ablution.

As the eight metals touching the philosopher's stone become gold, similarly, the gurmukhs, having conquered their mind have conquered the whole world.

paaras hoe paarasahu gur upades aves dikhaaeaa |

Such is the effect of the Guru's teaching that the Sikh acquires the same qualities as if a stone by touching a philosopher's stone has itself become another philosopher's stone.

In the holy congregation, getting attuned to the Word, the gurmukh treats pains and joys in the same vein.

Hopes and fears do not torture them. They reside in home while being detached and to them, nectar or poison, happiness and sorrows are all the same.

Air, water, fire and the three qualities – tranquility, activity and inertness have been conquered by the Sikh.

chaar padaarath hath jorr hukamee bande rehan kharrote |

The four ideals (dharma, arth, kaam, moksha) stand with folded hands, around the obedient servant (of the Lord).

This servant has made the four directions bow to him, by bowing to the One Lord, who has strung one and all into one thread.

The Vedas, the reciter pandits of the Vedas and their audience cannot understand His mystery.

chahu jug andar jaagadee ot pot mil jagamag jote |

His ever-radiant flame glows in all the four yugs.

People of the four varnas have become one varna, and the Gursikhs have entered the (larger) clan of Gurmukhs.

dharamasaal vich beejade kar gurapurab su vanaj sote |

At the abodes of dharma (Gurdwaras), they celebrate anniversaries of the Gurus and thus sow the seeds of virtuous actions.

काम क्रोधु अहंकार साधि लोभ मोह दी जोह मिटाई ।

kaam krodh ahankaar saadh lobh moh dee joh mittaaee |

Sikhs in the sadh sangat (holy company), controlling the kaam (lust/desires), krodh (anger), ahankar (ego), decimate their lobh (greed) and moh (infatuation/emotional-attachment).

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਰਥੁ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸੁਗਰਥੁ ਸਮਾਈ ।

sat santokh deaa dharam arath samarath sugarath samaaee |

In the holy congregation, truth, contentment, compassion, dharma, wealth, power, all are subsumed.

Crossing the five elements, the felicitation of the five words (instruments) are played there.

Having controlled five yogic postures, the respectable member of the congregation become famous all around.

paramesar hai panj mil lekh alekh na keemat paaee |

Where the five persons sit together, Lord God, is there; this mystery of indescribable Lord cannot be known.

But only those five meet (to sit together), who repudiating hypocrisy have merged their consciousness in the unstruck melody of the Word.

Followers of six (Indian philosophies) crave intensely, but only gurmukh gets the glimpse of the Lord.

chhia rutee kar varatamaan sooraj ik chalat varataaeaa |

As for a few days before marriage, the bride and the bridegroom look beautiful, the gurmukhs also remain adorned.

Knocking down the wall of ego, the gurmukh has united the pond (self) with the river (Brahm).

Undoubtedly, the river remains contained within its two banks, neither one knowing the other.
