ਵਾਲਹੁ ਨਿਕੀ ਆਖੀਐ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਤਿਖੀ ।

वालहु निकी आखीऐ खंडे धारहु सुणीऐ तिखी ।

vaalahu nikee aakheeai khandde dhaarahu suneeai tikhee |

Sikh spirit is subtler than a trichome and sharper than the edge of sword.


ਆਖਣਿ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਸਕੀਐ ਲੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਿਖੀ ।

आखणि आखि न सकीऐ लेख अलेख न जाई लिखी ।

aakhan aakh na sakeeai lekh alekh na jaaee likhee |

Nothing can be said or explained about it and its indescribable account cannot be written.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪੰਥੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਅਪੜਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਵਿਖੀ ।

गुरमुखि पंथु वखाणीऐ अपड़ि न सकै इकतु विखी ।

guramukh panth vakhaaneeai aparr na sakai ikat vikhee |

Defined as the way of the Gurmukhs, it cannot be attained by a single step.


ਸਿਲ ਆਲੂਣੀ ਚਟਣੀ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਲਖ ਅਮਿਅ ਰਸ ਇਖੀ ।

सिल आलूणी चटणी तुलि न लख अमिअ रस इखी ।

sil aaloonee chattanee tul na lakh amia ras ikhee |

It is like licking a tasteless stone, but the joy of even the juice of lakhs of sweet sugar cane, cannot be compared with it.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਜੁ ਬਿਰਖੀ ।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु पाइआ भाइ भगति विरली जु बिरखी ।

guramukh sukh fal paaeaa bhaae bhagat viralee ju birakhee |

The gurmukhs have attained the pleasure-fruit of loving devotion which grows on rare trees.


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ।

सतिगुर तुठै पाईऐ साधसंगति गुरमति गुरसिखी ।

satigur tutthai paaeeai saadhasangat guramat gurasikhee |

By the grace of the true Guru, following the wisdom of the Guru, and in the holy congregation, the Gursikhi spirit is attained.


ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਭਿਖਕ ਭਿਖੀ ।੧।

चारि पदारथ भिखक भिखी ।१।

chaar padaarath bhikhak bhikhee |1|

Four ideals (dharma, arth, kaam and mokhsa) of life are begged by the beggars.

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਮੰਗੈ ।

चारि पदारथ आखीअनि सतिगुर देइ न गुरसिखु मंगै ।

chaar padaarath aakheean satigur dee na gurasikh mangai |

The true Guru himself bestows the four ideals; the Sikh of the Guru does not ask for them.


ਅਠ ਸਿਧਿ ਨਿਧੀ ਨਵੈ ਰਿਧਿ ਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਢਾਕੈ ਟੰਗੈ ।

अठ सिधि निधी नवै रिधि न गुरु सिखु ढाकै टंगै ।

atth sidh nidhee navai ridh na gur sikh dtaakai ttangai |

The gurmukh never carries on his back, the nine treasures and eight miraculous powers.


ਕਾਮਧੇਣੁ ਲਖ ਲਖਮੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨ ਹੰਘੈ ਢੰਗਿ ਸੁਢੰਗੈ ।

कामधेणु लख लखमी पहुंच न हंघै ढंगि सुढंगै ।

kaamadhen lakh lakhamee pahunch na hanghai dtang sudtangai |

Wish fulfilling cow kamdhenu and lakhs of Lakshmis, with their fine gestures, cannot reach a gursikh — Sikh of the Guru.


ਲਖ ਪਾਰਸ ਲਖ ਪਾਰਿਜਾਤ ਹਥਿ ਨ ਛੁਹਦਾ ਫਲ ਨ ਅਭੰਗੈ ।

लख पारस लख पारिजात हथि न छुहदा फल न अभंगै ।

lakh paaras lakh paarijaat hath na chhuhadaa fal na abhangai |

The Sikh of the Guru never touches the philosopher's stone or transitory fruits or lakhs of wish fulfilling trees parijat.


ਤੰਤ ਮੰਤ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਲਖ ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ ਨੰਗੈ ।

तंत मंत पाखंड लख बाजीगर बाजारी नंगै ।

tant mant paakhandd lakh baajeegar baajaaree nangai |

Lakhs of tantriks knowing mantras and tantras are mere acrobats for a Sikh of the Guru.


ਪੀਰ ਮੁਰੀਦੀ ਗਾਖੜੀ ਇਕਸ ਅੰਗਿ ਨ ਅੰਗਣਿ ਅੰਗੈ ।

पीर मुरीदी गाखड़ी इकस अंगि न अंगणि अंगै ।

peer mureedee gaakharree ikas ang na angan angai |

The Guru­ disciple relationship is very complex because many are its laws and byelaws.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਦੂਜੇ ਭਾਵਹੁ ਸੰਗੈ ।੨।

गुरसिखु दूजे भावहु संगै ।२।

gurasikh dooje bhaavahu sangai |2|

The Sikh of the Guru is ever shy of the sense of duality.

गुरसिखी दा सिखणा नादु न वेद न आखि वखाणै ।

gurasikhee daa sikhanaa naad na ved na aakh vakhaanai |

The discipline of the discipleship of the Guru is ineffable for the Vedas and all the melodies.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਲਖ ਨ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा लिखणा लख न चित्र गुपति लिखि जाणै ।

gurasikhee daa likhanaa lakh na chitr gupat likh jaanai |

Even Chitragupt, the writer of the accounts of the actions of the people, does not know how to write about the spirit of Sikh life.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਣੋਂ ਸੇਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਸਿਾਣੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा सिमरणों सेख असंख न रेख सिाणै ।

gurasikhee daa simaranon sekh asankh na rekh siaanai |

The glory of simran, remembrance of the name of the Lord, cannot be known by myriad Sesanags (thousand hooded mythical snake).


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਵਰਤਮਾਨੁ ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਉਲੰਘਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा वरतमानु वीह इकीह उलंघि पछाणै ।

gurasikhee daa varatamaan veeh ikeeh ulangh pachhaanai |

The conduct of the Gursikh spirit, can be known only by going beyond the worldly phenomena.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਬੁਝਣਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਿਵ ਆਣੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा बुझणा गिआन धिआन अंदरि किव आणै ।

gurasikhee daa bujhanaa giaan dhiaan andar kiv aanai |

How can anybody understand the Sikh way of life or Gursikhi, through learning and contemplation alone?


ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੈ ।

गुर परसादी साधसंगि सबद सुरति होइ माणु निमाणै ।

gur parasaadee saadhasang sabad surat hoe maan nimaanai |

By the grace of the Guru, in the holy congregation, the gursikh concentrating his consciousness in the Word, sheds pride and becomes humble.


ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੈ ।੩।

भाइ भगति विरला रंगु माणै ।३।

bhaae bhagat viralaa rang maanai |3|

A rare one may enjoy the pleasure of loving devotion.

गुरसिखी दा सिखणा गुरमुखि साधसंगति दी सेवा ।

gurasikhee daa sikhanaa guramukh saadhasangat dee sevaa |

The way of learning the conduct of a Sikh of the Guru, is service of the holy congregation (sadhsangat).


ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਨ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਗੀਤਾ ਗੋਸਟਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ।

दस अवतार न सिखिआ गीता गोसटि अलख अभेवा ।

das avataar na sikhiaa geetaa gosatt alakh abhevaa |

This mystery was not known even to the ten incarnations (of Vishnu); this mystery is beyond the Gita and discussions.


ਵੇਦ ਨ ਜਾਣਨ ਭੇਦ ਕਿਹੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਪੜਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਣੁ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ।

वेद न जाणन भेद किहु लिखि पड़ि सुणि सणु देवी देवा ।

ved na jaanan bhed kihu likh parr sun san devee devaa |

The Vedas don't know its secret, though they are studied by gods and goddesses.


ਸਿਧ ਨਾਥ ਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਤੰਤ ਨ ਮੰਤ ਲੰਘਾਇਨਿ ਖੇਵਾ ।

सिध नाथ न समाधि विचि तंत न मंत लंघाइनि खेवा ।

sidh naath na samaadh vich tant na mant langhaaein khevaa |

The deep meditations of the siddhs, naths and even the tantras could not cross the teachings and practices of Sikh way of life.


ਲਖ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਨ ਗਏ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੀ ਟੇਵਾ ।

लख भगति जगत विचि लिखि न गए गुरु सिखी टेवा ।

lakh bhagat jagat vich likh na ge gur sikhee ttevaa |

Lakhs of devotees flourished in this world, but they also could not understand the life discipline of the Sikhs of the Guru.


ਸਿਲਾ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਚਟਣੀ ਸਾਦਿ ਨ ਪੁਜੈ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਮੇਵਾ ।

सिला अलूणी चटणी सादि न पुजै लख लख मेवा ।

silaa aloonee chattanee saad na pujai lakh lakh mevaa |

This life is similar to the licking of the tasteless stone, but its taste is incomparable even to the lakhs of fruits.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਸਮੇਵਾ ।੪।

साधसंगति गुर सबद समेवा ।४।

saadhasangat gur sabad samevaa |4|

Absorption in the word of the Guru, in the holy congregation, is the accomplishment of the life of a gursikh.

gurasikhee daa sikhanaa sabad surat satisangat sikhai |

To learn about Sikh-life, one ought to merge one's consciousness in the Word, in the holy congregation.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਮਝੈ ਲਿਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा लिखणा गुरबाणी सुणि समझै लिखै ।

gurasikhee daa likhanaa gurabaanee sun samajhai likhai |

Writing about Sikh life is to go on listening, understanding and writing the Gurbani.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਣੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੰਤੁ ਕੋਲੂ ਰਸੁ ਇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा सिमरणो सतिगुरु मंतु कोलू रसु इखै ।

gurasikhee daa simarano satigur mant koloo ras ikhai |

Simran, meditation in Sikh life, is learning the Guru-mantra (Vahiguru) which is sweet like sugarcane juice.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਵਰਤਮਾਨੁ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਬਿਰਿਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा वरतमानु चंदन वासु निवासु बिरिखै ।

gurasikhee daa varatamaan chandan vaas nivaas birikhai |

The spirit of Sikhism is like fragrance residing in sandalwood trees.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਬੁਝਣਾ ਬੁਝਿ ਅਬੁਝਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲੈ ਭਿਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा बुझणा बुझि अबुझि होवै लै भिखै ।

gurasikhee daa bujhanaa bujh abujh hovai lai bhikhai |

The understanding of a Sikh of the Guru consists in the fact that even after having received the gifted alms (of naam) and being fully knowledgeable, he considers himself as ignorant.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਸਰਿਖੈ ।

साधसंगति गुर सबदु सुणि नामु दानु इसनानु सरिखै ।

saadhasangat gur sabad sun naam daan isanaan sarikhai |

The Sikh of the Guru, in the holy congregation, listens to the word of the Guru and practices meditation, charity and ablution.


ਵਰਤਮਾਨੁ ਲੰਘਿ ਭੂਤ ਭਵਿਖੈ ।੫।

वरतमानु लंघि भूत भविखै ।५।

varatamaan langh bhoot bhavikhai |5|

And thus, goes across the past and present to a new future.

ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਹੁਇ ਮਿਠ ਬੋਲਾ ਲਿਖੈ ਨ ਲੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा बोलणा हुइ मिठ बोला लिखै न लेखै ।

gurasikhee daa bolanaa hue mitth bolaa likhai na lekhai |

The Gursikh speaks mildly and never gets oneself noticed i.e. ego is repudiated.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਚਲਣਾ ਚਲੈ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੀਤੇ ਭੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा चलणा चलै भै विचि लीते भेखै ।

gurasikhee daa chalanaa chalai bhai vich leete bhekhai |

Maintaining the Sikh form and moving in the fear of the Lord, constitutes the Gursikh way of living.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਰਾਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਲ ਚਲੈ ਸੋ ਦੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा राहु एहु गुरमुखि चाल चलै सो देखै ।

gurasikhee daa raahu ehu guramukh chaal chalai so dekhai |

Gursikhi living means following the footsteps of gursikhs.


ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਅਵੇਸੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੈ ।

घालि खाइ सेवा करै गुर उपदेसु अवेसु विसेखै ।

ghaal khaae sevaa karai gur upades aves visekhai |

One should eat the fruit of one's own labor, do service and always remain inspired by the teachings of the Guru.


ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇ ਨ ਅਪੜੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਰੇਖੈ ।

आपु गणाइ न अपड़ै आपु गवाए रूप न रेखै ।

aap ganaae na aparrai aap gavaae roop na rekhai |

The supreme Lord is not attained through egotism and only after losing the sense of ego, he can identify oneself with the formless and limitless Lord.


ਮੁਰਦੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਰੀ ਵੜਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਲੇਖੈ ।

मुरदे वांग मुरीद होइ गुर गोरी वड़ि अलख अलेखै ।

murade vaang mureed hoe gur goree varr alakh alekhai |

A disciple coming like a dead person and entering into the guru grave, can merge into the imperceptible Lord who is beyond all writs.


ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਮੰਤੁ ਨ ਸੇਖ ਸਰੇਖੈ ।੬।

अंतु न मंतु न सेख सरेखै ।६।

ant na mant na sekh sarekhai |6|

Sesanags could not understand the mystery of His mantra.

गुरसिखी दा सिखणा गुरु सिख सिखण बजरु भारा ।

gurasikhee daa sikhanaa gur sikh sikhan bajar bhaaraa |

Learning of the Gursikh way of life is as tough as the thunderbolt and only the Sikhs of the Guru learn it.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਲੇਖੁ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਲਿਖਣਹਾਰਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा लिखणा लेखु अलेखु न लिखणहारा ।

gurasikhee daa likhanaa lekh alekh na likhanahaaraa |

Writing about the Gursikh-life is also beyond all accounts; none can write.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਤੋਲਣਾ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੁਲੈ ਤੁਲਧਾਰਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा तोलणा तुलि न तोलि तुलै तुलधारा ।

gurasikhee daa tolanaa tul na tol tulai tuladhaaraa |

No scale can weigh the Gursikhi way of life.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा देखणा गुरमुखि साधसंगति गुरदुआरा ।

gurasikhee daa dekhanaa guramukh saadhasangat guraduaaraa |

The glimpse of the Gursikhi life can be seen in the holy congregation (sadhsangat) in the Gurdwara.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਚਖਣਾ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा चखणा साधसंगति गुरु सबदु वीचारा ।

gurasikhee daa chakhanaa saadhasangat gur sabad veechaaraa |

Pondering upon the word of Guru in the holy congregation is like tasting of the Sikh way of life.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा समझणा जोती जोति जगावणहारा ।

gurasikhee daa samajhanaa jotee jot jagaavanahaaraa |

Understanding of the Sikh life is like kindling the flame of the Lord.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਿਰਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ।੭।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु पिरमु पिआरा ।७।

guramukh sukh fal piram piaaraa |7|

The pleasure-fruit of the Gurmukhs is the love of the dear Lord.

गुरसिखी दा रूप देखि इकस बाझु न होरसु देखै ।

gurasikhee daa roop dekh ikas baajh na horas dekhai |

One who has attained Sikh-life does not wish to have glimpse of any (god, goddess) except the Lord.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਚਖਣਾ ਲਖ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲ ਫਿਕੈ ਲੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा चखणा लख अंम्रित फल फिकै लेखै ।

gurasikhee daa chakhanaa lakh amrit fal fikai lekhai |

To one who has tasted the Sikh-life, lakhs of ambrosial fruits taste tasteless.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਦੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਲਖ ਅਨਹਦ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਅਲੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा नादु सुणि लख अनहद विसमाद अलेखै ।

gurasikhee daa naad sun lakh anahad visamaad alekhai |

Listening to the melody of Sikh-life, one enjoys the wondrous delight of lakhs of unstruck melodies.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਪਰਸਣਾ ਠੰਢਾ ਤਤਾ ਭੇਖ ਅਭੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दा परसणा ठंढा तता भेख अभेखै ।

gurasikhee daa parasanaa tthandtaa tataa bhekh abhekhai |

Those who have come in touch with the Sikh spirit, have gone beyond the impacts of hot and cold, guise and disguise.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦੀ ਵਾਸੁ ਲੈ ਹੁਇ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਸਰੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी दी वासु लै हुइ दुरगंध सुगंध सरेखै ।

gurasikhee dee vaas lai hue duragandh sugandh sarekhai |

Having inhaled the fragrance of Sikh life, one feels all other fragrances as a smell.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਮਰ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਨਿਮਖ ਨਮੇਖੈ ।

गुरसिखी मर जीवणा भाइ भगति भै निमख नमेखै ।

gurasikhee mar jeevanaa bhaae bhagat bhai nimakh namekhai |

One who has started living the Sikh way of life, lives every moment in loving devotion.


ਅਲਪਿ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਸੇਖੈ ।੮।

अलपि रहै गुर सबदि विसेखै ।८।

alap rahai gur sabad visekhai |8|

Subsumed in the word of the Guru, he remains detached from the world.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਹੈ ਸਿਖੁ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਖਲੋਵੈ ।

गुरमुखि सचा पंथु है सिखु सहज घरि जाइ खलोवै ।

guramukh sachaa panth hai sikh sehaj ghar jaae khalovai |

The way of gurmukhs is that way of truth, treading which, the Sikh automatically stabilizes in his innate nature.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਹੈ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕੁ ਜੁ ਹੋਵੈ ।

गुरमुखि सचु रहरासि है पैरीं पै पा खाकु जु होवै ।

guramukh sach raharaas hai paireen pai paa khaak ju hovai |

The conduct of gurmukhs is true; touching of the feet and becoming dust of the feet i.e. getting most humble, is their active behavior.


ਗੁਰੁਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਵਣਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ।

गुरुसिखी दा नावणा गुरमति लै दुरमति मलु धोवै ।

gurusikhee daa naavanaa guramat lai duramat mal dhovai |

The ablution in Sikh-life is washing away of evil propensities, by adopting the wisdom of the Guru (gurmati).


ਗੁਰੁਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਪੂਜਣਾ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪੂਜ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਵੈ ।

गुरुसिखी दा पूजणा गुरसिख पूज पिरम रसु भोवै ।

gurusikhee daa poojanaa gurasikh pooj piram ras bhovai |

Worship in Sikh-life is the worship (service) to the Sikhs of the Guru and getting drenched in the shower of love of the dear Lord.


ਗੁਰੁਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਗਲਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਵੈ ।

गुरुसिखी दा मंनणा गुर बचनी गलि हारु परोवै ।

gurusikhee daa mananaa gur bachanee gal haar parovai |

Wearing the words of the Guru like garland, is the acceptance of the will of the Lord.


ਗੁਰੁਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਜੀਂਵਦਿਆਂ ਮਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਵੈ ।

गुरुसिखी दा जीवणा जींवदिआं मरि हउमै खोवै ।

gurusikhee daa jeevanaa jeenvadiaan mar haumai khovai |

Life of a gursikh is being dead i.e. losing one's ego while alive.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਵਿਲੋਵੈ ।੯।

साधसंगति गुर सबद विलोवै ।९।

saadhasangat gur sabad vilovai |9|

In such a life, the word of the Guru is churned in the holy congregation.

गुरमुखि सुख फलु खावणा दुखु सुखु सम करि अउचर चरणा ।

guramukh sukh fal khaavanaa dukh sukh sam kar aauchar charanaa |

Adopting pleasure and pain equally, the gurmukhs eat the fruit of delight.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਗਾਵਣਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਝਰੁ ਝਰਣਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा गावणा अंम्रित बाणी निझरु झरणा ।

gurasikhee daa gaavanaa amrit baanee nijhar jharanaa |

Music in the Sikh way of life is the continuous flow (singing) of ambrosial hymns of the Guru (gurbani).


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰਣਾ ।

गुरसिखी धीरजु धरमु पिरम पिआला अजरु जरणा ।

gurasikhee dheeraj dharam piram piaalaa ajar jaranaa |

Fortitude and duty in Sikh life is the bearing of the unbearable power of the cup of love.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਡਰਿ ਨਿਡਰੁ ਨਿਡਰ ਮੁਚ ਡਰਣਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा संजमो डरि निडरु निडर मुच डरणा ।

gurasikhee daa sanjamo ddar niddar niddar much ddaranaa |

The practice of continence in Sikhism is getting fearless in this scary world and moving always in the fear of the Lord.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜਗੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰਣਾ ।

गुरसिखी मिलि साधसंगि सबद सुरति जगु दुतरु तरणा ।

gurasikhee mil saadhasang sabad surat jag dutar taranaa |

Another doctrine of the Sikh life is that joining the holy congregation and concentrating the mind in the word, man goes across the world ocean.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਏਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਫੁਰਮਾਏ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਕਰਣਾ ।

गुरसिखी दा करमु एहु गुर फुरमाए गुरसिख करणा ।

gurasikhee daa karam ehu gur furamaae gurasikh karanaa |

Acting according to the instructions of the Guru, is the performance of the Sikh life.


ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਣਾ ।੧੦।

गुर किरपा गुरु सिखु गुरु सरणा ।१०।

gur kirapaa gur sikh gur saranaa |10|

By the grace of the Guru, the disciple (Sikh) remains in the shelter of the Guru.

ਵਾਸਿ ਸੁਵਾਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਿੰਮਲਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਲਾਏ ।

वासि सुवासु निवासु करि सिंमलि गुरमुखि सुख फल लाए ।

vaas suvaas nivaas kar sinmal guramukh sukh fal laae |

Diffusing in all the places like fragrance, the gurmukh makes even the mind oriented manmukh, fragrant by giving him pleasure-fruit.


ਪਾਰਸ ਹੋਇ ਮਨੂਰੁ ਮਿਲੁ ਕਾਗਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸੁ ਕਰਵਾਏ ।

पारस होइ मनूरु मिलु कागहु परम हंसु करवाए ।

paaras hoe manoor mil kaagahu param hans karavaae |

He transforms iron slag into gold and the crows into the swans of highest order (param hans).


ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤਹੁ ਦੇਵ ਕਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇਵ ਸੇਵ ਭੈ ਪਾਏ ।

पसू परेतहु देव करि सतिगुर देव सेव भै पाए ।

pasoo paretahu dev kar satigur dev sev bhai paae |

Consequent to the service of the true Guru, animals and ghosts also become gods.


ਸਭ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਰਖਿ ਸੰਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਹਥਿ ਵਜਾਏ ।

सभ निधान रखि संख विचि हरि जी लै लै हथि वजाए ।

sabh nidhaan rakh sankh vich har jee lai lai hath vajaae |

Having all the treasures in His hand (conch), He goes on distributing them with his hand among the people, day and night.


ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਹੋਇ ਆਪੁ ਛਲਾਏ ।

पतित उधारणु आखीऐ भगति वछल होइ आपु छलाए ।

patit udhaaran aakheeai bhagat vachhal hoe aap chhalaae |

Called as the redeemer of the sinners, the Lord, loving to the devotees, gets Himself deluded by the devotees.


ਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਰੇ ਜਗ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਏ ।

गुण कीते गुण करे जग अवगुण कीते गुण गुर भाए ।

gun keete gun kare jag avagun keete gun gur bhaae |

The whole world is good towards the well-wisher alone, but the Guru loves to do good even to the evil doer.


ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਜਗ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਏ ।੧੧।

परउपकारी जग विचि आए ।११।

Guru has come to the world as a benevolent entity.

ਫਲ ਦੇ ਵਟ ਵਗਾਇਆਂ ਤਛਣਹਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ।

फल दे वट वगाइआं तछणहारे तारि तरंदा ।

fal de vatt vagaaeaan tachhanahaare taar tarandaa |

A tree gives fruits to stone thrower, and wooden boat to the cutter to get him across.


ਤਛੇ ਪੁਤ ਨ ਡੋਬਈ ਪੁਤ ਵੈਰੁ ਜਲ ਜੀ ਨ ਧਰੰਦਾ ।

तछे पुत न डोबई पुत वैरु जल जी न धरंदा ।

tachhe put na ddobee put vair jal jee na dharandaa |

Water, the father (of tree), not remembering the evil deeds (of carpenter), does not drown the boat along with carpenter.


ਵਰਸੈ ਹੋਇ ਸਹੰਸ ਧਾਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਿਲ ਜਲੁ ਨੀਵਾਣਿ ਚਲੰਦਾ ।

वरसै होइ सहंस धार मिलि गिल जलु नीवाणि चलंदा ।

varasai hoe sahans dhaar mil gil jal neevaan chalandaa |

Becoming thousands of currents when it rains, water in thousand streams flows towards the lower places.


ਡੋਬੈ ਡਬੈ ਅਗਰ ਨੋ ਆਪੁ ਛਡਿ ਪੁਤ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੰਦਾ ।

डोबै डबै अगर नो आपु छडि पुत पैज रखंदा ।

ddobai ddabai agar no aap chhadd put paij rakhandaa |

Wood of agar tree is drowned but repudiating ego, water saves the honor of its son, wood of the tree.


ਤਰਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਡੁਬਾ ਤਰੈ ਜਿਣਿ ਹਾਰੈ ਹਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਜਿਣੰਦਾ ।

तरि डुबै डुबा तरै जिणि हारै हारै सु जिणंदा ।

tar ddubai ddubaa tarai jin haarai haarai su jinandaa |

He who goes on swimming upon the water (of love) may be understood as drowned and he who drowns in love, may be considered as having swum across. Similarly, winner in the world loses, and becoming detached and the loser, one wins (ultimately).


ਉਲਟਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਦਾ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਉਪਰਿ ਸੀਸੁ ਨਿਵੰਦਾ ।

उलटा खेलु पिरंम दा पैरां उपरि सीसु निवंदा ।

aulattaa khel piram daa pairaan upar sees nivandaa |

Inverse is the tradition of love, which makes the head bow to the feet.


ਆਪਹੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੰਦਾ ।੧੨।

आपहु किसै न जाणै मंदा ।१२।

aapahu kisai na jaanai mandaa |12|

The altruist Sikh considers none as the bad or the worse.

ਧਰਤੀ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠਿ ਹੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੇਠਿ ਵਸੰਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ।

धरती पैरां हेठि है धरती हेठि वसंदा पाणी ।

dharatee pairaan hetth hai dharatee hetth vasandaa paanee |

The earth is under our feet but under the earth is water.


ਪਾਣੀ ਚਲੈ ਨੀਵਾਣੁ ਨੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੁਧੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ।

पाणी चलै नीवाणु नो निरमलु सीतलु सुधु पराणी ।

paanee chalai neevaan no niramal seetal sudh paraanee |

Water flows downward and makes others cool and clean.


ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੈ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਜਾਣੀ ।

बहु रंगी इक रंगु है सभनां अंदरि इको जाणी ।

bahu rangee ik rang hai sabhanaan andar iko jaanee |

Mixed with various colors, it assumes those colors, but in itself, it is colorless common to all.


ਤਤਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਧੁਪ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਵੈ ਠੰਢਾ ਵਿਰਤੀ ਹਾਣੀ ।

तता होवै धुप विचि छावै ठंढा विरती हाणी ।

tataa hovai dhup vich chhaavai tthandtaa viratee haanee |

It becomes hot in the sun and cool in the shade, it acts in consonance with its companions (sun and shade).


ਤਪਦਾ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਨੋ ਠੰਢੇ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ।

तपदा परउपकार नो ठंढे परउपकार विहाणी ।

tapadaa praupakaar no tthandte praupakaar vihaanee |

Whether hot or cold, its purpose always is other's good.


ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਤਪਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਠੰਢਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਬਿਲਮੁ ਨ ਆਣੀ ।

अगनि बुझाए तपति विचि ठंढा होवै बिलमु न आणी ।

agan bujhaae tapat vich tthandtaa hovai bilam na aanee |

Though itself warm, it extinguishes the fire and takes no time to get cold again.


ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੀ ਦੀ ਏਹੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ।੧੩।

गुरु सिखी दी एहु नीसाणी ।१३।

gur sikhee dee ehu neesaanee |13|

These are the virtuous marks of the Sikhs of the Guru.

ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਸੈ ।

पाणी अंदरि धरति है धरती अंदरि पाणी वसै ।

paanee andar dharat hai dharatee andar paanee vasai |

Earth is in water and in the earth also is water.


ਧਰਤੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਰੰਗ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਉ ਨ ਸਭ ਰਸ ਰਸੈ ।

धरती रंगु न रंग सभ धरती साउ न सभ रस रसै ।

dharatee rang na rang sabh dharatee saau na sabh ras rasai |

Earth has no color, yet it has all colors (in the form of different vegetation) in it. Earth has no taste, yet all the tastes are contained in it.


ਧਰਤੀ ਗੰਧੁ ਨ ਗੰਧ ਬਹੁ ਧਰਤਿ ਨ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਤਰਸੈ ।

धरती गंधु न गंध बहु धरति न रूप अनूप तरसै ।

dharatee gandh na gandh bahu dharat na roop anoop tarasai |

No smell is there in the earth, yet all the fragrances reside in it.


ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਦਸੈ ।

जेहा बीजै सो लुणै करमि भूमि सभ कोई दसै ।

jehaa beejai so lunai karam bhoom sabh koee dasai |

Earth is a field for actions; here one reaps what one sows.


ਚੰਦਨ ਲੇਪੁ ਨ ਲੇਪੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਮਲ ਮੂਤ ਕਸੂਤੁ ਨ ਧਸੈ ।

चंदन लेपु न लेपु है करि मल मूत कसूतु न धसै ।

chandan lep na lep hai kar mal moot kasoot na dhasai |

Plastered with sandal paste, it does not get attached to it and fouled up by creatures' excreta, it does not sink with anger and shame.


ਵੁਠੇ ਮੀਹ ਜਮਾਇਦੇ ਡਵਿ ਲਗੈ ਅੰਗੂਰੁ ਵਿਗਸੈ ।

वुठे मीह जमाइदे डवि लगै अंगूरु विगसै ।

vutthe meeh jamaaeide ddav lagai angoor vigasai |

After rains, people sow corn in it and even after (getting heat) fire new seedlings sprout from it.


ਦੁਖਿ ਨ ਰੋਵੈ ਸੁਖਿ ਨ ਹਸੈ ।੧੪।

दुखि न रोवै सुखि न हसै ।१४।

dukh na rovai sukh na hasai |14|

It does not wail in suffering nor laughs in pleasure.

ਪਿਛਲ ਰਾਤੀਂ ਜਾਗਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦਿੜਾਏ ।

पिछल रातीं जागणा नामु दानु इसनानु दिड़ाए ।

pichhal raateen jaaganaa naam daan isanaan dirraae |

The Sikh awakes in the pre-dawn hour (amrit vela) and meditating upon Naam, he becomes alert for ablution and charity.


ਮਿਠਾ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਨਿਵ ਚਲਣੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਭਲਾ ਮਨਾਏ ।

मिठा बोलणु निव चलणु हथहु दे कै भला मनाए ।

mitthaa bolan niv chalan hathahu de kai bhalaa manaae |

He speaks sweetly, moves humbly and giving away something by his hands for the well-being of others, feels happy.


ਥੋੜਾ ਸਵਣਾ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਥੋੜਾ ਬੋਲਨੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ।

थोड़ा सवणा खावणा थोड़ा बोलनु गुरमति पाए ।

thorraa savanaa khaavanaa thorraa bolan guramat paae |

Sleeping and eating moderately, he, according to the teachings of the Guru, does not speak much.


ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਸੁਕ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ।

घालि खाइ सुक्रितु करै वडा होइ न आपु गणाए ।

ghaal khaae sukrit karai vaddaa hoe na aap ganaae |

He toils to earn, performs good deeds and though being great, never gets his greatness noticed.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਂਵਦੇ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈਂ ਨਿਤ ਚਲਿ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਏ ।

साधसंगति मिलि गांवदे राति दिहैं नित चलि चलि जाए ।

saadhasangat mil gaanvade raat dihain nit chal chal jaae |

Walking for day and night, he reaches where Gurbani is sung in the holy congregation.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰਚਾ ਕਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਚੈ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਚਾਏ ।

सबद सुरति परचा करै सतिगुरु परचै मनु परचाए ।

sabad surat parachaa karai satigur parachai man parachaae |

He keeps his consciousness merged in the Word and maintains in the mind, love for the true Guru.


ਆਸਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਵਲਾਏ ।੧੫।

आसा विचि निरासु वलाए ।१५।

aasaa vich niraas valaae |15|

Amid hopes and desires, he remains detached.

ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਸਦਾਵੈ ।

गुर चेला चेला गुरू गुरु सिख सुणि गुरसिखु सदावै ।

gur chelaa chelaa guroo gur sikh sun gurasikh sadaavai |

Having listened to the teachings of the Guru, the disciple and the Guru become one (in form and spirit).


ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ।

इक मनि इकु अराधणा बाहरि जांदा वरजि रहावै ।

eik man ik araadhanaa baahar jaandaa varaj rahaavai |

He, with single mind adores the one Lord, and keeps his straying mind under control.


ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਖਸਮੈ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ।

हुकमी बंदा होइ कै खसमै दा भाणा तिसु भावै ।

hukamee bandaa hoe kai khasamai daa bhaanaa tis bhaavai |

He becomes obedient servant of the lord and loves His will and command.


ਮੁਰਦਾ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਸੋਇ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਗੋਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

मुरदा होइ मुरीद सोइ को विरला गुरि गोरि समावै ।

muradaa hoe mureed soe ko viralaa gur gor samaavai |

Any rare Sikh becoming disciple, be a dead person enters the guru grave.


ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕੁ ਹੋਇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਉਪਰਿ ਸੀਸੁ ਧਰਾਵੈ ।

पैरी पै पा खाकु होइ पैरां उपरि सीसु धरावै ।

pairee pai paa khaak hoe pairaan upar sees dharaavai |

Falling on the feet and becoming dust of the feet, he reposes his head on the feet of the Guru.


ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਆਪੁ ਹੋਇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਵੈ ।

आपु गवाए आपु होइ दूजा भाउ न नदरी आवै ।

aap gavaae aap hoe doojaa bhaau na nadaree aavai |

Becoming one with Him, he loses his ego and now the sense of duality is nowhere visible with him.


ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ।੧੬।

गुरु सिखी गुरु सिखु कमावै ।१६।

gur sikhee gur sikh kamaavai |16|

Such an accomplishment is had only by Sikh of the Guru.

ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੈਂਸਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਤੰਗ ਮਿਲੰਦੇ ।

ते विरले सैंसार विचि दरसन जोति पतंग मिलंदे ।

te virale sainsaar vich darasan jot patang milande |

Rare are those people, who like a moth rush toward the flame of the glimpse (of the Lord).


ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੈਂਸਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਰਗ ਮਰੰਦੇ ।

ते विरले सैंसार विचि सबद सुरति होइ मिरग मरंदे ।

te virale sainsaar vich sabad surat hoe mirag marande |

They are also rare in the world, who merging their consciousness in the Word, die like a deer.


ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੈਂਸਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਹੁਇ ਭਵਰ ਵਸੰਦੇ ।

ते विरले सैंसार विचि चरण कवल हुइ भवर वसंदे ।

te virale sainsaar vich charan kaval hue bhavar vasande |

Rare are they in this world, who like black bee adore lotus feet of the Guru.


ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੈਂਸਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਿਰਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ਮੀਨ ਤਰੰਦੇ ।

ते विरले सैंसार विचि पिरम सनेही मीन तरंदे ।

te virale sainsaar vich piram sanehee meen tarande |

Rare are (the Sikhs) in the world, who becoming full of love swim like fish in water.


ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੈਂਸਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੰਦੇ ।

ते विरले सैंसार विचि गुरु सिख गुरु सिख सेव करंदे ।

te virale sainsaar vich gur sikh gur sikh sev karande |

Such Sikhs of the Guru are also rare who serve other Sikhs of the Guru.


ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮਨਿ ਭੈ ਰਹਨਿ ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਜੀਵੰਦੇ ।

भै विचि जंमनि भै रहनि भै विचि मरि गुरु सिख जीवंदे ।

bhai vich jaman bhai rehan bhai vich mar gur sikh jeevande |

Taking birth and sustaining in His order (fear), the Sikhs of the Guru who die while alive (are also rare).


ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਿਰਮੁ ਚਖੰਦੇ ।੧੭।

गुरमुख सुख फलु पिरमु चखंदे ।१७।

guramukh sukh fal piram chakhande |17|

Thus, becoming gurmukhs, they taste the fruit of joy.

ਲਖ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਲਖ ਸੰਜਮਾਂ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਲਖ ਵਰਤ ਕਰੰਦੇ ।

लख जप तप लख संजमां होम जग लख वरत करंदे ।

lakh jap tap lakh sanjamaan hom jag lakh varat karande |

Lakhs of recitations, disciplines, continence, burnt oblations and fasts are performed.


ਲਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਲਖ ਊਲਖਾ ਲਖ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਪੁਰਬ ਲਗੰਦੇ ।

लख तीरथ लख ऊलखा लख पुरीआ लख पुरब लगंदे ।

lakh teerath lakh aoolakhaa lakh pureea lakh purab lagande |

Lakhs of holy journeys, charities are undertaken, and lakhs of holy occasions are celebrated.


ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਲ ਦੇਹੁਰੇ ਲਖ ਪੁਜਾਰੀ ਪੂਜ ਕਰੰਦੇ ।

देवी देवल देहुरे लख पुजारी पूज करंदे ।

devee deval dehure lakh pujaaree pooj karande |

In the abodes of gods and goddesses, and the temples, lakhs of priests perform worship.


ਜਲ ਥਲ ਮਹੀਅਲ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਲਖ ਫੇਰਿ ਫਿਰੰਦੇ ।

जल थल महीअल भरमदे करम धरम लख फेरि फिरंदे ।

jal thal maheeal bharamade karam dharam lakh fer firande |

Moving on earth and in the sky, lakhs of practitioners of dharma-oriented activities run hither and thither.


ਲਖ ਪਰਬਤ ਵਣ ਖੰਡ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਭਵੰਦੇ ।

लख परबत वण खंड लख लख उदासी होइ भवंदे ।

lakh parabat van khandd lakh lakh udaasee hoe bhavande |

Lakhs of people becoming unconcerned with worldly affairs go on moving in the mountains and forests.


ਅਗਨੀ ਅੰਗੁ ਜਲਾਇਂਦੇ ਲਖ ਹਿਮੰਚਲਿ ਜਾਇ ਗਲੰਦੇ ।

अगनी अंगु जलाइंदे लख हिमंचलि जाइ गलंदे ।

aganee ang jalaaeinde lakh himanchal jaae galande |

Lakhs are there who die by burning themselves and lakhs are there who die by freezing themselves in the snowy mountains.


ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਲਹੰਦੇ ।੧੮।

गुर सिखी सुखु तिलु न लहंदे ।१८।

gur sikhee sukh til na lahande |18|

But they all cannot take even a fraction of joy, attainable in the life of a Sikh of the Guru.

ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਣ ਕਰਿ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਵਰਨੁ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ।

चारि वरण करि वरतिआ वरनु चिहनु किहु नदरि न आइआ ।

chaar varan kar varatiaa varan chihan kihu nadar na aaeaa |

That Lord is diffused in all the four varnas, but, His own color and mark are imperceptible.


ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਰਸਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਨ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ।

छिअ दरसनु भेखधारीआं दरसन विचि न दरसनु पाइआ ।

chhia darasan bhekhadhaareean darasan vich na darasan paaeaa |

The followers of the six philosophical orders (of India) could not see Him in their philosophies.


ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਦਸ ਨਾਵ ਧਰਿ ਨਾਉ ਗਣਾਇ ਨ ਨਾਉ ਧਿਆਇਆ ।

संनिआसी दस नाव धरि नाउ गणाइ न नाउ धिआइआ ।

saniaasee das naav dhar naau ganaae na naau dhiaaeaa |

Sannyasis giving ten names to their sects, counted His many names but do not contemplate the Naam.


ਰਾਵਲ ਬਾਰਹ ਪੰਥ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪੰਥੁ ਨ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।

रावल बारह पंथ करि गुरमुख पंथु न अलखु लखाइआ ।

raaval baarah panth kar guramukh panth na alakh lakhaaeaa |

Ravals (yogis) made their twelve sects but the imperceptible way of the gurmukhs could not be known by them.


ਬਹੁ ਰੂਪੀ ਬਹੁ ਰੂਪੀਏ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਲੇਖੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ।

बहु रूपी बहु रूपीए रूप न रेख न लेखु मिटाइआ ।

bahu roopee bahu roopee roop na rekh na lekh mittaaeaa |

The mimics assumed many forms but even then, they could not wipe out the writ (inscribed by the Lord) i.e. they could not attain liberation from transmigration.


ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਚਲਦੇ ਸੰਗ ਲਖ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ।

मिलि मिलि चलदे संग लख साधू संगि न रंग रंगाइआ ।

mil mil chalade sang lakh saadhoo sang na rang rangaaeaa |

Though lakhs of people move jointly creating various leagues and sects, but they also could not dye their minds in the (steadfast) color of the holy congregation.


ਵਿਣ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ।੧੯।

विण गुरु पूरे मोहे माइआ ।१९।

vin gur poore mohe maaeaa |19|

Without the perfect Guru, they all are infatuated by maya.

ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀ ਕਿਰਸਾਣ ਕਰਿ ਖੇਤ ਬੀਜਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਨ ਲਹੰਦੇ ।

किरसाणी किरसाण करि खेत बीजि सुख फलु न लहंदे ।

kirasaanee kirasaan kar khet beej sukh fal na lahande |

Farmers, even having done their farming, do not attain the fruit of spiritual pleasure.


ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਏ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਨ ਵਸੰਦੇ ।

वणजु करनि वापारीए लै लाहा निज घरि न वसंदे ।

vanaj karan vaapaaree lai laahaa nij ghar na vasande |

The traders engaged in profitable trading, do not remain stabilized in their selves.


ਚਾਕਰ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਨ ਸੁਲਹ ਕਰੰਦੇ ।

चाकर करि करि चाकरी हउमै मारि न सुलह करंदे ।

chaakar kar kar chaakaree haumai maar na sulah karande |

The servants go on doing their jobs but not eschewing ego, they do not meet the Lord.


ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆਂ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਤਬ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹੰਦੇ ।

पुंन दान चंगिआईआं करि करि करतब थिरु न रहंदे ।

pun daan changiaaeean kar kar karatab thir na rahande |

People, despite their virtues and charities and even performing many duties, do not remain stabilized.


ਰਾਜੇ ਪਰਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਵੰਦੇ ।

राजे परजे होइ कै करि करि वादु न पारि पवंदे ।

raaje paraje hoe kai kar kar vaad na paar pavande |

Becoming rulers and subjects, people undertake many quarrels but do not go across the world ocean.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਸੁਣਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮੇਲ ਮਿਲੰਦੇ ।

गुरसिख सुणि गुरु सिख होइ साधसंगति करि मेल मिलंदे ।

gurasikh sun gur sikh hoe saadhasangat kar mel milande |

Sikhs of the Guru, adopt the teachings of the Guru, and joining the holy congregation, attain the supreme Lord.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਲਦੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ।੨੦।

गुरमति चलदे विरले बंदे ।२०।

guramat chalade virale bande |20|

Only rare ones behave in accordance with the wisdom of the Guru, the Gurmati.

ਗੁੰਗਾ ਗਾਵਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਬੋਲਾ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਣੈ ।

गुंगा गावि न जाणई बोला सुणै न अंदरि आणै ।

gungaa gaav na jaanee bolaa sunai na andar aanai |

The dumb person cannot sing and the deaf cannot hear so that nothing enters their understanding.


ਅੰਨ੍ਹੈ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਰਾਤਿ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੀ ਘਰੁ ਨ ਸਿਾਣੈ ।

अंन्है दिसि न आवई राति अन्हेरी घरु न सिाणै ।

anhai dis na aavee raat anheree ghar na siaanai |

The blind cannot see and in the dark and he cannot identify the house (he lives in).


ਚਲਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਪਿੰਗੁਲਾ ਲੂਲ੍ਹਾ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ।

चलि न सकै पिंगुला लूल्हा गलि मिलि हेतु न जाणै ।

chal na sakai pingulaa loolhaa gal mil het na jaanai |

A cripple cannot keep pace and a handicapped cannot embrace to show his love.


ਸੰਢਿ ਸਪੁਤੀ ਨ ਥੀਐ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਰਲੀਆਂ ਮਾਣੈ ।

संढि सपुती न थीऐ खुसरे नालि न रलीआं माणै ।

sandt saputee na theeai khusare naal na raleean maanai |

A barren woman cannot have a son, nor can she enjoy coition with a eunuch.


ਜਣਿ ਜਣਿ ਪੁਤਾਂ ਮਾਈਆਂ ਲਾਡਲੇ ਨਾਂਵ ਧਰੇਨਿ ਧਿਙਾਣੈ ।

जणि जणि पुतां माईआं लाडले नांव धरेनि धिङाणै ।

jan jan putaan maaeean laaddale naanv dharen dhingaanai |

The mothers giving births to their sons, give them pet names lovingly (but mere good names cannot make a good man).


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਣੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਟਟਾਣੈ ।

गुरसिखी सतिगुरू विणु सूरजु जोति न होइ टटाणै ।

gurasikhee satiguroo vin sooraj jot na hoe ttattaanai |

Sikh life without the true Guru is impossible, as a glow worm cannot enlighten the sun.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।੨੧।

साधसंगति गुर सबदु वखाणै ।२१।

saadhasangat gur sabad vakhaanai |21|

In the holy congregation, the word of the Guru is explained (and the jiv cultivates understanding).

ਲਖ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਾਇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਨ ਅਪੜਿ ਸਕੈ ।

लख धिआन समाधि लाइ गुरमुखि रूपि न अपड़ि सकै ।

lakh dhiaan samaadh laae guramukh roop na aparr sakai |

Lakhs of meditational postures and concentrations cannot equal the form of the gurmukh.


ਲਖ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਖਾਣਿ ਕਰ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਉਡਾਰੀ ਥਕੈ ।

लख गिआन वखाणि कर सबद सुरति उडारी थकै ।

lakh giaan vakhaan kar sabad surat uddaaree thakai |

Lakhs got tired with learning and elaborations and with flights of consciousness to reach the divine Word.


ਬੁਧਿ ਬਲ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਲਖ ਢਹਿ ਢਹਿ ਪਵਨਿ ਪਿਰਮ ਦਰਿ ਧਕੈ ।

बुधि बल बचन बिबेक लख ढहि ढहि पवनि पिरम दरि धकै ।

budh bal bachan bibek lakh dteh dteh pavan piram dar dhakai |

Lakhs of people using their intellect and powers talk of discerning wisdom; but they fall and stagger, and at the door of the Lord, they get jolts and blows.


ਜੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਲਖ ਸਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਹਕੈ ।

जोग भोग बैराग लख सहि न सकहि गुण वासु महकै ।

jog bhog bairaag lakh seh na sakeh gun vaas mahakai |

Lakhs of yogis, pleasure seekers and recluses cannot bear the passions and fragrance of the three qualities of nature (sattva, rajas and tamas).


ਲਖ ਅਚਰਜ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੋਇ ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਕੈ ।

लख अचरज अचरज होइ अबिगति गति अबिगति विचि अकै ।

lakh acharaj acharaj hoe abigat gat abigat vich akai |

Lakhs of wonderstruck people have got tired of the unmanifest nature of the unmanifest Lord.


ਵਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਲਖ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਹਮਿ ਸਹਕੈ ।

विसमादी विसमादु लख अकथ कथा विचि सहमि सहकै ।

visamaadee visamaad lakh akath kathaa vich seham sahakai |

Lakhs are awe-struck, with the ineffable story of that wondrous Lord.


ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀ ਦੈ ਅਖਿ ਫਰਕੈ ।੨੨।੨੮। ਅਠਾਈ ।

गुरसिखी दै अखि फरकै ।२२।२८। अठाई ।

gurasikhee dai akh farakai |22|28| atthaaee |

They all are equal to the delight of one moment of the life of a Gursikh.
