ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।

आदि पुरखु आदेसु करि आदि पुरख आदेसु कराइआ ।

aad purakh aades kar aad purakh aades karaaeaa |

The Guru bowed before the Lord and the primal Lord made the whole world bow before the Guru.


ਏਕੰਕਾਰ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਨਾਉ ਸਦਵਾਇਆ ।

एकंकार अकारु करि गुरु गोविंदु नाउ सदवाइआ ।

ekankaar akaar kar gur govind naau sadavaaeaa |

The formless Oankar, assuming (human) form has got himself called Guru (Har) Gobind.


ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਸਰਗੁਣ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ।

पारब्रहमु पूरन ब्रहमु निरगुण सरगुण अलखु लखाइआ ।

paarabraham pooran braham niragun saragun alakh lakhaaeaa |

Assuming form and being formless at the same time, the transcendental perfect Brahm has made his unmanifest form manifest.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਅਛਲੁ ਛਲਾਇਆ ।

साधसंगति आराधिआ भगति वछलु होइ अछलु छलाइआ ।

saadhasangat aaraadhiaa bhagat vachhal hoe achhal chhalaaeaa |

The holy congregation adored Him; and being in love with the devotees, He, the undeceivable, got deluded (and became manifest in the form of Guru).


ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਅਕਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਇਕੁ ਕਵਾਉ ਪਸਾਉ ਪਸਾਇਆ ।

ओअंकार अकार करि इकु कवाउ पसाउ पसाइआ ।

oankaar akaar kar ik kavaau pasaau pasaaeaa |

The Onkaar, assuming form, created the whole world by His one commanding vibration.


ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੁ ਕਰੋੜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ।

रोम रोम विचि रखिओनु करि ब्रहमंडु करोड़ि समाइआ ।

rom rom vich rakhion kar brahamandd karorr samaaeaa |

In His each trichome, He contained crores of universes.


ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਧਿਆਇਆ ।੧।

साध जना गुर चरन धिआइआ ।१।

saadh janaa gur charan dhiaaeaa |1|

The sadhus adore the Lord in the form of the Guru's feet.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੈਰੁ ਧਰਿ ਦਹਿ ਦਿਸਿ ਬਾਰਹ ਵਾਟ ਨ ਧਾਇਆ ।

गुरमुखि मारगि पैरु धरि दहि दिसि बारह वाट न धाइआ ।

guramukh maarag pair dhar deh dis baarah vaatt na dhaaeaa |

The guru-oriented Gurmukhs, treading the path leading towards the Guru, does not stray into the paths of the twelve sects of the yogis.


ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ।

गुर मूरति गुर धिआनु धरि घटि घटि पूरन ब्रहम दिखाइआ ।

gur moorat gur dhiaan dhar ghatt ghatt pooran braham dikhaaeaa |

Concentrating on the form of Guru i.e. Word of the Guru, he adopts it in life and comes face to face with the perfect Brahm.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਲਿਵ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਣਾਇਆ ।

सबद सुरति उपदेसु लिव पारब्रहम गुर गिआनु जणाइआ ।

sabad surat upades liv paarabraham gur giaan janaaeaa |

Concentration of consciousness on the word of the Guru, and knowledge bestowed by the Guru, provides the awareness about the transcendental Brahm.


ਸਿਲਾ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਚਟਣੀ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਪਿਆਇਆ ।

सिला अलूणी चटणी चरण कवल चरणोदकु पिआइआ ।

silaa aloonee chattanee charan kaval charanodak piaaeaa |

This however is nothing less than licking of the tasteless stone. Only such a person quaffs the nectar of feet-wash of the Guru.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਖ ਸੰਪਟ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰੁ ਛਾਇਆ ।

गुरमति निहचलु चितु करि सुख संपट विचि निज घरु छाइआ ।

guramat nihachal chit kar sukh sanpatt vich nij ghar chhaaeaa |

He stabilizes his mind in the wisdom of the Guru and reclines comfortably in the chamber of his inner self.


ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰਹਰੇ ਪਾਰਸਿ ਪਰਸਿ ਅਪਰਸੁ ਰਹਾਇਆ ।

पर तन पर धन परहरे पारसि परसि अपरसु रहाइआ ।

par tan par dhan parahare paaras paras aparas rahaaeaa |

Touching the philosopher's stone in the form of the Guru, he repudiates the wealth and physical body of others, and remains detached from all.


ਸਾਧ ਅਸਾਧਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਆਇਆ ।੨।

साध असाधि साधसंगि आइआ ।२।

saadh asaadh saadhasang aaeaa |2|

For curing his chronic maladies (of evil propensities), he goes to the holy congregation.

ਜਿਉ ਵੜ ਬੀਉ ਸਜੀਉ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਸਥਾਰੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਉਪਜਾਇਆ ।

जिउ वड़ बीउ सजीउ होइ करि विसथारु बिरखु उपजाइआ ।

jiau varr beeo sajeeo hoe kar visathaar birakh upajaaeaa |

As the seed of banyan tree, getting developed, extends itself in the form of a large tree.


ਬਿਰਖਹੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਹੰਸ ਫਲ ਫਲ ਫਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹੁ ਬੀਅ ਸਮਾਇਆ ।

बिरखहु होइ सहंस फल फल फल विचि बहु बीअ समाइआ ।

birakhahu hoe sahans fal fal fal vich bahu beea samaaeaa |

And then, on that very tree, grow thousands of fruits, containing myriad seeds (likewise gurmukh makes others like his own self).


ਦੁਤੀਆ ਚੰਦੁ ਅਗਾਸ ਜਿਉ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।

दुतीआ चंदु अगास जिउ आदि पुरख आदेसु कराइआ ।

duteea chand agaas jiau aad purakh aades karaaeaa |

That primal Lord, like the second day's moon in the sky, gets worshipped by one and all.


ਤਾਰੇ ਮੰਡਲੁ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਸਚ ਖੰਡ ਵਸਾਇਆ ।

तारे मंडलु संत जन धरमसाल सच खंड वसाइआ ।

taare manddal sant jan dharamasaal sach khandd vasaaeaa |

The saints are constellations, inhabiting the abode of truth, in the form of religious places.


ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪਾਖਾਕ ਹੋਇ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਜਣਾਇਆ ।

पैरी पै पाखाक होइ आपु गवाइ न आपु जणाइआ ।

pairee pai paakhaak hoe aap gavaae na aap janaaeaa |

They bow at the feet and becoming dust of the feet, lose their ego and never allow themselves to be noticed by anyone.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਧ੍ਰੂ ਜਿਵੈ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਵਾਸੁ ਅਗਾਸੁ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ ।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु ध्रू जिवै निहचल वासु अगासु चढ़ाइआ ।

guramukh sukh fal dhraoo jivai nihachal vaas agaas charrhaaeaa |

Attainer of the pleasure fruit, the gurmukh, lives steadfastly like the pole star in the sky.


ਸਭ ਤਾਰੇ ਚਉਫੇਰਿ ਫਿਰਾਇਆ ।੩।

सभ तारे चउफेरि फिराइआ ।३।

sabh taare chaufer firaaeaa |3|

All the stars revolve around him.

ਨਾਮਾ ਛੀਂਬਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ।

नामा छींबा आखीऐ गुरमुखि भाइ भगति लिव लाई ।

naamaa chheenbaa aakheeai guramukh bhaae bhagat liv laaee |

Namdev, the calico printer, having become gurmukh, merged his consciousness in loving devotion.


ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਦੇਹੁਰੈ ਉਤਮ ਜਾਤਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ।

खत्री ब्राहमण देहुरै उतम जाति करनि वडिआई ।

khatree braahaman dehurai utam jaat karan vaddiaaee |

High caste kshatriyas and Brahmins, who went to temple to eulogize the Lord.


ਨਾਮਾ ਪਕੜਿ ਉਠਾਲਿਆ ਬਹਿ ਪਛਵਾੜੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ।

नामा पकड़ि उठालिआ बहि पछवाड़ै हरि गुण गाई ।

naamaa pakarr utthaaliaa beh pachhavaarrai har gun gaaee |

They caught hold of Namdev and ousted him from the temple. While sitting in the back yard of the temple, Namdev started singing the praises of the Lord.


ਭਗਤ ਵਛਲੁ ਆਖਾਇਦਾ ਫੇਰਿ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਪੈਜਿ ਰਖਾਈ ।

भगत वछलु आखाइदा फेरि देहुरा पैजि रखाई ।

bhagat vachhal aakhaaeidaa fer dehuraa paij rakhaaee |

The Lord known as kind to devotees, turned the face of the temple towards Namdev and maintained His own reputation.


ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣਿਆ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ।

दरगह माणु निमाणिआ साधसंगति सतिगुर सरणाई ।

daragah maan nimaaniaa saadhasangat satigur saranaaee |

In the shelter of holy congregation, the true Guru and the Lord, the humble ones get the honor.


ਉਤਮੁ ਪਦਵੀ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਣ ਪਏ ਪਗਿ ਆਈ ।

उतमु पदवी नीच जाति चारे वरण पए पगि आई ।

autam padavee neech jaat chaare varan pe pag aaee |

High ranking as well as the so-called low castes i.e. all the four varnas fell at the feet of Namdev.


ਜਿਉ ਨੀਵਾਨਿ ਨੀਰੁ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਈ ।੪।

जिउ नीवानि नीरु चलि जाई ।४।

jiau neevaan neer chal jaaee |4|

Just as the water flows down towards the low.

ਅਸੁਰ ਭਭੀਖਣੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਦਰੁ ਸੁ ਵਿਖਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ।

असुर भभीखणु भगतु है बिदरु सु विखली पति सरणाई ।

asur bhabheekhan bhagat hai bidar su vikhalee pat saranaaee |

Saint Vibhisaa was a demon, and Vidur, son of maid servant, came in the shelter of the Lord.


ਧੰਨਾ ਜਟੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਸਧਨਾ ਜਾਤਿ ਅਜਾਤਿ ਕਸਾਈ ।

धंना जटु वखाणीऐ सधना जाति अजाति कसाई ।

dhanaa jatt vakhaaneeai sadhanaa jaat ajaat kasaaee |

Dhanna is known as a jatt and Sadhana was an outcaste butcher.


ਭਗਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਜੁਲਾਹੜਾ ਨਾਮਾ ਛੀਂਬਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈ ।

भगतु कबीरु जुलाहड़ा नामा छींबा हरि गुण गाई ।

bhagat kabeer julaaharraa naamaa chheenbaa har gun gaaee |

Saint Kabir was a weaver and Namdev was a calico-printer, who sang the praises of the Lord.


ਕੁਲਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸੁ ਚਮਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਸੈਣੁ ਸਨਾਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਈ ।

कुलि रविदासु चमारु है सैणु सनाती अंदरि नाई ।

kul ravidaas chamaar hai sain sanaatee andar naaee |

Ravidas was a cobbler and saint Sain belonged to (the so-called low) barber caste.


ਕੋਇਲ ਪਾਲੈ ਕਾਵਣੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਅਪਣੇ ਕੁਲ ਜਾਈ ।

कोइल पालै कावणी अंति मिलै अपणे कुल जाई ।

koeil paalai kaavanee ant milai apane kul jaaee |

Female crow takes care of the fledglings of nightingale, but they ultimately meet their own family.


ਕਿਸਨੁ ਜਸੋਧਾ ਪਾਲਿਆ ਵਾਸਦੇਵ ਕੁਲ ਕਵਲ ਸਦਾਈ ।

किसनु जसोधा पालिआ वासदेव कुल कवल सदाई ।

kisan jasodhaa paaliaa vaasadev kul kaval sadaaee |

Though Yagoda nurtured Krishna, yet he came to be known as the lotus (child) of the family of Vasudev.


ਘਿਅ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਨ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਭਗਤਾ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਨਾਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ।

घिअ भांडा न वीचारीऐ भगता जाति सनाति न काई ।

ghia bhaanddaa na veechaareeai bhagataa jaat sanaat na kaaee |

As the pot of any type containing ghee is not said to be bad, likewise, the saints also have no high or low caste whatsoever.


ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ।੫।

चरण कवल सतिगुर सरणाई ।५।

charan kaval satigur saranaaee |5|

They all remain in the shelter of the lotus feet of the true Guru.

ਡੇਮੂੰ ਖਖਰਿ ਮਿਸਰੀ ਮਖੀ ਮੇਲੁ ਮਖੀਰੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ।

डेमूं खखरि मिसरी मखी मेलु मखीरु उपाइआ ।

ddemoon khakhar misaree makhee mel makheer upaaeaa |

From hornets' nest, lump sugar and by honeybees, the honey hive is produced.


ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਕੀੜਿਅਹੁ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਟਿ ਸਣੁ ਕਿਰਤਾਸੁ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।

पाट पटंबर कीड़िअहु कुटि कटि सणु किरतासु बणाइआ ।

paatt pattanbar keerriahu kutt katt san kirataas banaaeaa |

From worms is produced silk, and by pounding the hemp, paper is prepared.


ਮਲਮਲ ਹੋਇ ਵੜੇਵਿਅਹੁ ਚਿਕੜਿ ਕਵਲੁ ਭਵਰੁ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ।

मलमल होइ वड़ेविअहु चिकड़ि कवलु भवरु लोभाइआ ।

malamal hoe varreviahu chikarr kaval bhavar lobhaaeaa |

Muslin is prepared from cotton seed, and in the mire grows the lotus on which the black bee gets enamored.


ਜਿਉ ਮਣਿ ਕਾਲੇ ਸਪ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਥਰੁ ਹੀਰੇ ਮਾਣਕ ਛਾਇਆ ।

जिउ मणि काले सप सिरि पथरु हीरे माणक छाइआ ।

jiau man kaale sap sir pathar heere maanak chhaaeaa |

A gem remains in the hood of black snake and among the stones are found diamonds and rubies.


ਜਾਣੁ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਮਿਰਗ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਉ ਭਗਉਤੀ ਲੋਹੁ ਘੜਾਇਆ ।

जाणु कथूरी मिरग तनि नाउ भगउती लोहु घड़ाइआ ।

jaan kathooree mirag tan naau bhgautee lohu gharraaeaa |

The musk is found in the navel of deer and from ordinary iron, the powerful sword is aced.


ਮੁਸਕੁ ਬਿਲੀਅਹੁ ਮੇਦੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਜਲਸ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹ ਮਹਕਾਇਆ ।

मुसकु बिलीअहु मेदु करि मजलस अंदरि मह महकाइआ ।

musak bileeahu med kar majalas andar meh mahakaaeaa |

The brain marrow of musk cat makes the whole gathering fragrant.


ਨੀਚ ਜੋਨਿ ਉਤਮੁ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ।੬।

नीच जोनि उतमु फलु पाइआ ।६।

neech jon utam fal paaeaa |6|

Thus, the creatures and materials of lower species, give and attain the highest fruits.

ਬਲਿ ਪੋਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦਾ ਇੰਦਰਪੁਰੀ ਦੀ ਇਛ ਇਛੰਦਾ ।

बलि पोता प्रहिलाद दा इंदरपुरी दी इछ इछंदा ।

bal potaa prahilaad daa indarapuree dee ichh ichhandaa |

Grandson of Prahalad, king Bali, had a desire of ruling the abode of Indra (indrapuri).


ਕਰਿ ਸੰਪੂਰਣੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਉ ਇਕ ਇਕੋਤਰੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਰੰਦਾ ।

करि संपूरणु जगु सउ इक इकोतरु जगु करंदा ।

kar sanpooran jag sau ik ikotar jag karandaa |

He had accomplished 100 yajnas (burnt offerings) and his other hundred yajnas were in progress.


ਬਾਵਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਉਧਰੰਦਾ ।

बावन रूपी आइ कै गरबु निवारि भगत उधरंदा ।

baavan roopee aae kai garab nivaar bhagat udharandaa |

Lord, in the form of a dwarf, came to remove his ego and thus liberated him.


ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣ ਨੋ ਪਰਹਰੈ ਜਾਇ ਪਤਾਲਿ ਸੁ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ।

इंद्रासण नो परहरै जाइ पतालि सु हुकमी बंदा ।

eindraasan no paraharai jaae pataal su hukamee bandaa |

He repudiated the throne of Indra, and like an obedient servant, went to the nether world.


ਬਲਿ ਛਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਛਲਾਇਓਨੁ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਰਵਾਨ ਹੋਵੰਦਾ ।

बलि छलि आपु छलाइओनु दरवाजे दरवान होवंदा ।

bal chhal aap chhalaaeon daravaaje daravaan hovandaa |

The Lord Himself got enamored of Bali and had to stay as a door keeper of Bali.


ਸ੍ਵਾਤਿ ਬੂੰਦ ਲੈ ਸਿਪ ਜਿਉ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੁਭੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਸੁਹੰਦਾ ।

स्वाति बूंद लै सिप जिउ मोती चुभी मारि सुहंदा ।

svaat boond lai sip jiau motee chubhee maar suhandaa |

Bali, the king, is like that shell which in the svati naksatr (a special star formation) receiving a drop and making it a pearl, dives deep at the bottom of the sea.


ਹੀਰੈ ਹੀਰਾ ਬੇਧਿ ਮਿਲੰਦਾ ।੭।

हीरै हीरा बेधि मिलंदा ।७।

heerai heeraa bedh milandaa |7|

The diamond heart of devotee Bali, cut by the diamond Lord, was finally subsumed in Him.

ਨੀਚਹੁ ਨੀਚ ਸਦਾਵਣਾ ਕੀੜੀ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ।

नीचहु नीच सदावणा कीड़ी होइ न आपु गणाए ।

neechahu neech sadaavanaa keerree hoe na aap ganaae |

Ants never make themselves noticed and are known lowest among the lowly.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਇਕਤੁ ਖਡੁ ਸਹੰਸ ਸਮਾਏ ।

गुरमुखि मारगि चलणा इकतु खडु सहंस समाए ।

guramukh maarag chalanaa ikat khadd sahans samaae |

They follow the path of gurmukhs and due to their broad mindedness, they live in thousands, in a small hole.


ਘਿਅ ਸਕਰ ਦੀ ਵਾਸੁ ਲੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਧਰੀ ਤਿਥੈ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਏ ।

घिअ सकर दी वासु लै जिथै धरी तिथै चलि जाए ।

ghia sakar dee vaas lai jithai dharee tithai chal jaae |

Only by smelling ghee and sugar, they reach the place where these things are kept (gurmukhs also search out the holy congregations).


ਡੁਲੈ ਖੰਡੁ ਜੁ ਰੇਤੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਖੰਡੂ ਦਾਣਾ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਏ ।

डुलै खंडु जु रेतु विचि खंडू दाणा चुणि चुणि खाए ।

ddulai khandd ju ret vich khanddoo daanaa chun chun khaae |

They pick up the sugar bits scattered in sand (similarly as a gurmukh cherishes the virtues).


ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗੀ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਜਾਇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਏ ।

भ्रिंगी दे भै जाइ मरि होवै भ्रिंगी मारि जीवाए ।

bhringee de bhai jaae mar hovai bhringee maar jeevaae |

Dying of the fear of worm bhringi, the ant itself becomes bhringi, and makes others also like itself.


ਅੰਡਾ ਕਛੂ ਕੂੰਜ ਦਾ ਆਸਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਵਲਾਏ ।

अंडा कछू कूंज दा आसा विचि निरासु वलाए ।

anddaa kachhoo koonj daa aasaa vich niraas valaae |

Like the eggs of heron and tortoise, it remains detached amidst hopes.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ।੮।

गुरमुखि गुरसिखु सुख फलु पाए ।८।

guramukh gurasikh sukh fal paae |8|

Similarly, gurmukhs, also getting educated, attain the pleasure fruits.

सूरज पासि बिआसु जाइ होइ भुणहणा कंनि समाणा ।

sooraj paas biaas jaae hoe bhunahanaa kan samaanaa |

As per Hindu mythology, Rishi Vyas went to sun and becoming a small insect entered into his ear (i.e. most humbly he remained with him and got educated by sun).


ਪੜਿ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਲਮੀਕ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ।

पड़ि विदिआ घरि आइआ गुरमुखि बालमीक मनि भाणा ।

parr vidiaa ghar aaeaa guramukh baalameek man bhaanaa |

Valmiki becoming guru-oriented Gurmukh, attained knowledge and then he returned home.


ਆਦਿ ਬਿਆਸ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਕਥਿ ਕਥਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ।

आदि बिआस वखाणीऐ कथि कथि सासत्र वेद पुराणा ।

aad biaas vakhaaneeai kath kath saasatr ved puraanaa |

The exponent of many stories of the Vedas, Shastras and the Puranas, Valmiki is known as the primal poet.


ਨਾਰਦਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਗਵਤੁ ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਪਤੀਆਣਾ ।

नारदि मुनि उपदेसिआ भगति भागवतु पढ़ि पतीआणा ।

naarad mun upadesiaa bhagat bhaagavat parrh pateeaanaa |

Sage Narad preached to him and only after reading the Bhagavat of devotion, he could attain peace.


ਚਉਦਹ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਸੋਧਿ ਕੈ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ਸੁਖਾਣਾ ।

चउदह विदिआ सोधि कै परउपकारु अचारु सुखाणा ।

chaudah vidiaa sodh kai praupakaar achaar sukhaanaa |

He researched the fourteen skills but ultimately, he got happiness due to his benevolent conduct.


ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਾ ।

परउपकारी साधसंगु पतित उधारणु बिरदु वखाणा ।

praupakaaree saadhasang patit udhaaran birad vakhaanaa |

Association with such humble sadhus is altruistic and makes one habitual liberates of the fallen ones.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ।੯।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु पति परवाणा ।९।

guramukh sukh fal pat paravaanaa |9|

Gurmukhs attain pleasure fruits in it and get dignified acceptance in the court of the Lord.

बारह वर्हे गरभासि वसि जमदे ही सुकि लई उदासी ।

baarah varhe garabhaas vas jamade hee suk lee udaasee |

Having remained in his mother's womb for twelve years (as per mythology), Sukadev adopted detachedness, right form the very time of his birth.


ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਤੀਤ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਹਠ ਬੁਧਿ ਨ ਬੰਦਿ ਖਲਾਸੀ ।

माइआ विचि अतीत होइ मनहठ बुधि न बंदि खलासी ।

maaeaa vich ateet hoe manahatth budh na band khalaasee |

Though he went beyond maya, yet because of his intellect, pushed by stubbornness of mind, he could not attain liberation.


ਪਿਉ ਬਿਆਸ ਪਰਬੋਧਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਿ ਜਨਕ ਸਹਜ ਅਭਿਆਸੀ ।

पिउ बिआस परबोधिआ गुर करि जनक सहज अभिआसी ।

piau biaas parabodhiaa gur kar janak sehaj abhiaasee |

His father Vyas made him understand that he should adopt king Janak as his guru, who is well grounded in the art of remaining in equipoise.


ਤਜਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਈ ਸਿਰ ਧਰਿ ਜੂਠਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਸਾਬਾਸੀ ।

तजि दुरमति गुरमति लई सिर धरि जूठि मिली साबासी ।

taj duramat guramat lee sir dhar jootth milee saabaasee |

By divesting himself of the evil wisdom, he acquired the wisdom of Guru (gurmat) and as ordered by his guru, he carried leftovers on his head and thus earned pats from the guru.


ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਅਵੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਜਗਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਸੀ ।

गुर उपदेसु अवेसु करि गरबि निवारि जगति गुर दासी ।

gur upades aves kar garab nivaar jagat gur daasee |

When inspired by the teachings of the guru, he repudiated ego, the whole world accepted him as guru and became his servant.


ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੀ ।

पैरी पै पा खाक होइ गुरमति भाउ भगति परगासी ।

pairee pai paa khaak hoe guramat bhaau bhagat paragaasee |

By falling at the feet, by becoming dust of the feet and by the wisdom of the guru, loving devotion came up in him.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਹਜ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ।੧੦।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु सहज निवासी ।१०।

guramukh sukh fal sehaj nivaasee |10|

As a gurmukh attaining pleasure fruit, he got himself lodged in equipoise.

राज जोगु है जनक दे वडा भगतु करि वेदु वखाणै ।

raaj jog hai janak de vaddaa bhagat kar ved vakhaanai |

Janak is a king as well as a yogi and the books of knowledge (Vedas) describe him as great devotee.


ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਨਾਰਦ ਉਦਾਸ ਬਾਲ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਸੁਹਾਣੈ ।

सनकादिक नारद उदास बाल सुभाइ अतीतु सुहाणै ।

sanakaadik naarad udaas baal subhaae ateet suhaanai |

Sanaks and Narad, from their very childhood, were of detached nature and adorned themselves with indifference to all.


ਜੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਲਖ ਲੰਘਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੈ ।

जोग भोग लख लंघि कै गुरसिख साधसंगति निरबाणै ।

jog bhog lakh langh kai gurasikh saadhasangat nirabaanai |

Going beyond lakhs of detachments and enjoyments, the Sikhs of Guru also remain humble in the holy congregation.


ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਇ ਵਿਗੁਚਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਆਪੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ।

आपु गणाइ विगुचणा आपु गवाए आपु सिञाणै ।

aap ganaae viguchanaa aap gavaae aap siyaanai |

He, who gets himself counted or noticed, goes astray in illusions; but he, who loses his ego in fact identifies his self.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਸਚ ਦਾ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਵਣਾ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਾਣੈ ।

गुरमुखि मारगु सच दा पैरी पवणा राजे राणै ।

guramukh maarag sach daa pairee pavanaa raaje raanai |

Gurmukh's way is the way of truth whereby all the kings and emperors fall on his feet.


ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਆਣੈ ।

गरबु गुमानु विसारि कै गुरमति रिदै गरीबी आणै ।

garab gumaan visaar kai guramat ridai gareebee aanai |

Treader of this path, forgetting his ego and pride, cherishes humility in his heart, through the wisdom of the Guru.


ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੈ ।੧੧।

सची दरगह माणु निमाणै ।११।

sachee daragah maan nimaanai |11|

Such a humble person gets respects and regards in the true court.

sir uchaa abhimaan vich kaalakh bhariaa kaale vaalaa |

Proud head remains erect and high, yet it is covered by the blackness of hair.


ਭਰਵਟੇ ਕਾਲਖ ਭਰੇ ਪਿਪਣੀਆ ਕਾਲਖ ਸੂਰਾਲਾ ।

भरवटे कालख भरे पिपणीआ कालख सूराला ।

bharavatte kaalakh bhare pipaneea kaalakh sooraalaa |

Eyebrows are full of blackness and the eye lashes are also like black thorns.


ਲੋਇਣ ਕਾਲੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਨਿ ਦਾੜੀ ਮੁਛਾ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਹ ਕਾਲਾ ।

लोइण काले जाणीअनि दाड़ी मुछा करि मुह काला ।

loein kaale jaaneean daarree muchhaa kar muh kaalaa |

Eyes are black (in India), and likewise, beards and moustaches are also black.


ਨਕ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਕ ਵਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਲੂੰਇ ਲੂੰਇ ਕਾਲਖ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ।

नक अंदरि नक वाल बहु लूंइ लूंइ कालख बेताला ।

nak andar nak vaal bahu loone loone kaalakh betaalaa |

Many trichomes are there in the nose and all of them are black.


ਉਚੈ ਅੰਗ ਨ ਪੂਜੀਅਨਿ ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਰਮਸਾਲਾ ।

उचै अंग न पूजीअनि चरण धूड़ि गुरमुखि धरमसाला ।

auchai ang na poojeean charan dhoorr guramukh dharamasaalaa |

Organs placed higher are not worshipped and the dust of the feet of gurmukhs is adorable like holy places.


ਪੈਰਾ ਨਖ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਚਾਇਨਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਦੁਰਾਲਾ ।

पैरा नख मुख उजले भारु उचाइनि देहु दुराला ।

pairaa nakh mukh ujale bhaar uchaaein dehu duraalaa |

Feet and nails are blessed because they carry the load of the whole body.


ਸਿਰ ਧੋਵਣੁ ਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਰਣੋਦਕ ਜਗਿ ਭਾਲਾ ।

सिर धोवणु अपवित्र है गुरमुखि चरणोदक जगि भाला ।

sir dhovan apavatr hai guramukh charanodak jag bhaalaa |

The head wash is considered dirty, but the feet wash of the gurmukhs is sought after by the whole world.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ।੧੨।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु सहजु सुखाला ।१२।

guramukh sukh fal sehaj sukhaalaa |12|

Attaining the pleasure fruit, the gurmukhs in their equipoise, remain as the store house of all delights.

जल विचि धरती धरमसाल धरती अंदरि नीर निवासा ।

jal vich dharatee dharamasaal dharatee andar neer nivaasaa |

Earth, the abode for the conduct of dharma, is supported by water and inside earth too, resides water.


ਚਰਨ ਕਵਲ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਸੁਵਾਸਾ ।

चरन कवल सरणागती निहचल धीरजु धरमु सुवासा ।

charan kaval saranaagatee nihachal dheeraj dharam suvaasaa |

Coming into the shelter of the lotus feet (of the Guru), the earth is pervaded by the fragrance of firm fortitude and dharma.


ਕਿਰਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਕੁਸਮਾਵਲੀ ਬੂਟੀ ਜੜੀ ਘਾਹ ਅਬਿਨਾਸਾ ।

किरख बिरख कुसमावली बूटी जड़ी घाह अबिनासा ।

kirakh birakh kusamaavalee boottee jarree ghaah abinaasaa |

On it (earth), grow trees, lines of flowers, herbs and grass which never exhaust.


ਸਰ ਸਾਇਰ ਗਿਰਿ ਮੇਰੁ ਬਹੁ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸਾ ।

सर साइर गिरि मेरु बहु रतन पदारथ भोग बिलासा ।

sar saaeir gir mer bahu ratan padaarath bhog bilaasaa |

Many a pond, ocean, mountain, jewel and pleasure giving material are there on it.


ਦੇਵ ਸਥਲ ਤੀਰਥ ਘਣੇ ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ।

देव सथल तीरथ घणे रंग रूप रस कस परगासा ।

dev sathal teerath ghane rang roop ras kas paragaasaa |

Many godly places, pilgrimage centers, hues, forms, edibles and inedibles come forth from it.


ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਣਤਾਸਾ ।

गुर चेले रहरासि करि गुरमुखि साधसंगति गुणतासा ।

gur chele raharaas kar guramukh saadhasangat gunataasaa |

Owing to the tradition of the Guru-disciple, the holy congregation of the gurmukhs is also a similar ocean of virtues.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ।੧੩।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु आस निरासा ।१३।

guramukh sukh fal aas niraasaa |13|

Remaining detached amidst hopes and desires, is the pleasure fruit for the gurmukhs.

rom rom vich rakhion kar brahamandd karorr samaaee |

The Lord has subsumed crores of universes in His each trichome.


ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਤਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ।

पारब्रहमु पूरन ब्रहमु सति पुरख सतिगुरु सुखदाई ।

paarabraham pooran braham sat purakh satigur sukhadaaee |

The true Guru form of that primal perfect and transcendental Brahm is bestower of delights.


ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਹੋਇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ।

चारि वरन गुरसिख होइ साधसंगति सतिगुर सरणाई ।

chaar varan gurasikh hoe saadhasangat satigur saranaaee |

All the four varnas, come to the shelter of the true Guru, in the form of holy congregation.


ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਿਮਰਣਿ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ।

गिआन धिआन सिमरणि सदा गुरमुखि सबदि सुरति लिव लाई ।

giaan dhiaan simaran sadaa guramukh sabad surat liv laaee |

And the gurmukhs there, merge their consciousness in the Word, through learning, meditation and prayer.


ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਉ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਸਾਈ ।

भाइ भगति भउ पिरम रस सतिगुरु मूरति रिदे वसाई ।

bhaae bhagat bhau piram ras satigur moorat ride vasaaee |

Fear of the Lord, loving devotion and the delight of love, for them, is the idol of the true Guru whom they cherish in their heart.


ਏਵਡੁ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਚਾਇਂਦੇ ਸਾਧ ਚਰਣ ਪੂਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਈ ।

एवडु भारु उचाइंदे साध चरण पूजा गुर भाई ।

evadd bhaar uchaaeinde saadh charan poojaa gur bhaaee |

The feet of the true Guru, in the form of sadhu, bear so much load (mental as well as spiritual) of their disciples that we ought to worship them.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ।੧੪।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु कीम न पाई ।१४।

The value of the pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs cannot be estimated.

vasai chhahabar laae kai paranaaleen hue veeheen aavai |

When it rains profusely, the water flowing through gargoyles comes down in the streets.


ਲਖ ਨਾਲੇ ਉਛਲ ਚਲਨਿ ਲਖ ਪਰਵਾਹੀ ਵਾਹ ਵਹਾਵੈ ।

लख नाले उछल चलनि लख परवाही वाह वहावै ।

lakh naale uchhal chalan lakh paravaahee vaah vahaavai |

Lakhs of streams overflowing become lakhs of currents.


ਲਖ ਨਾਲੇ ਲਖ ਵਾਹਿ ਵਹਿ ਨਦੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਲੇ ਰਲਾਵੈ ।

लख नाले लख वाहि वहि नदीआ अंदरि रले रलावै ।

lakh naale lakh vaeh veh nadeea andar rale ralaavai |

Lakhs of rivulets join the currents of rivers.


ਨਉ ਸੈ ਨਦੀ ਨੜਿੰਨਵੈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਪਛਮਿ ਹੋਇ ਚਲਾਵੈ ।

नउ सै नदी नड़िंनवै पूरबि पछमि होइ चलावै ।

nau sai nadee narrinavai poorab pachham hoe chalaavai |

Nine hundred and ninety-nine rivers flow in the east and the west directions.


ਨਦੀਆ ਜਾਇ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਾਗਰ ਸੰਗਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ।

नदीआ जाइ समुंद विचि सागर संगमु होइ मिलावै ।

nadeea jaae samund vich saagar sangam hoe milaavai |

Rivers go to meet the sea.


ਸਤਿ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਗੜਾੜ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ਨ ਪੇਟੁ ਭਰਾਵੈ ।

सति समुंद गड़ाड़ महि जाइ समाहि न पेटु भरावै ।

sat samund garraarr meh jaae samaeh na pett bharaavai |

Seven such seas merge into the oceans but still the oceans are not satiated.


ਜਾਇ ਗੜਾੜੁ ਪਤਾਲ ਹੇਠਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਵੇ ਦੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

जाइ गड़ाड़ु पताल हेठि होइ तवे दी बूंद समावै ।

jaae garraarr pataal hetth hoe tave dee boond samaavai |

In the nether world, such oceans also look like a drop of water on a hot plate.


ਸਿਰ ਪਤਿਸਾਹਾਂ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਇੰਨਣੁ ਜਾਲਿ ਤਵੇ ਨੋ ਤਾਵੈ ।

सिर पतिसाहां लख लख इंनणु जालि तवे नो तावै ।

sir patisaahaan lakh lakh inan jaal tave no taavai |

To heat this plate, lakhs of heads of the emperors are used as fuel.


ਮਰਦੇ ਖਹਿ ਖਹਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾਵੈ ।੧੫।

मरदे खहि खहि दुनीआ दावै ।१५।

marade kheh kheh duneea daavai |15|

And these emperors, staking their claims on this earth, go on fighting and dying.

ਇਕਤੁ ਥੇਕੈ ਦੁਇ ਖੜਗੁ ਦੁਇ ਪਤਿਸਾਹ ਨ ਮੁਲਕਿ ਸਮਾਣੈ ।

इकतु थेकै दुइ खड़गु दुइ पतिसाह न मुलकि समाणै ।

eikat thekai due kharrag due patisaah na mulak samaanai |

Two swords in one sheath and two emperors in one country cannot be accommodated.


ਵੀਹ ਫਕੀਰ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਖਿੰਥ ਖਿੰਧੋਲੀ ਹੇਠਿ ਲੁਕਾਣੈ ।

वीह फकीर मसीति विचि खिंथ खिंधोली हेठि लुकाणै ।

veeh fakeer maseet vich khinth khindholee hetth lukaanai |

But twenty faquirs in one mosque under one patched blanket can remain (comfortably).


ਜੰਗਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੀਹ ਦੁਇ ਪੋਸਤ ਡੋਡੇ ਖਸਖਸ ਦਾਣੈ ।

जंगल अंदरि सीह दुइ पोसत डोडे खसखस दाणै ।

jangal andar seeh due posat ddodde khasakhas daanai |

Emperors are like lions in a jungle, whereas the faquirs are like the opium seeds in one pod.


ਸੂਲੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਖੇਲਣਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਬਜਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਣੈ ।

सूली उपरि खेलणा सिरि धरि छत्र बजार विकाणै ।

soolee upar khelanaa sir dhar chhatr bajaar vikaanai |

These seeds play on the bed of thorns, before they get the honor of selling in the market.


ਕੋਲੂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪੀੜੀਅਨਿ ਪੋਸਤਿ ਪੀਹਿ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਛਾਣੈ ।

कोलू अंदरि पीड़ीअनि पोसति पीहि पिआले छाणै ।

koloo andar peerreean posat peehi piaale chhaanai |

They are rushed in the press with water, before they are strained into the cup.


ਲਉਬਾਲੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਨਾਹੀ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੈ ।

लउबाली दरगाह विचि गरबु गुनाही माणु निमाणै ।

laubaalee daragaah vich garab gunaahee maan nimaanai |

In the court of the fearless Lord, the proud ones are called sinners and the humble get respects and regards.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਂਦੇ ਤਾਣਿ ਨਿਤਾਣੈ ।੧੬।

गुरमुखि होंदे ताणि निताणै ।१६।

guramukh honde taan nitaanai |16|

That is why the gurmukhs, though powerful, behave as the meek ones.

ਸੀਹ ਪਜੂਤੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਮਰਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੜ ਹੜ ਹਸੀ ।

सीह पजूती बकरी मरदी होई हड़ हड़ हसी ।

seeh pajootee bakaree maradee hoee harr harr hasee |

A goat was caught by a lion, and while about to die, it gave out a horse­ laugh.


ਸੀਹੁ ਪੁਛੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਹੋਇ ਇਤੁ ਅਉਸਰਿ ਕਿਤੁ ਰਹਸਿ ਰਹਸੀ ।

सीहु पुछै विसमादु होइ इतु अउसरि कितु रहसि रहसी ।

seehu puchhai visamaad hoe it aausar kit rehas rahasee |

The surprised lion asked - why it was so happy at such a moment (of its death).


ਬਿਨਉ ਕਰੇਂਦੀ ਬਕਰੀ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਕੀਚਨਿ ਖਸੀ ।

बिनउ करेंदी बकरी पुत्र असाडे कीचनि खसी ।

binau karendee bakaree putr asaadde keechan khasee |

Humbly, the goat replied that the testicles of our male progeny are crushed in order to castrate them.


ਅਕ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਖਾਧਿਆਂ ਕੁਹਿ ਕੁਹਿ ਖਲ ਉਖਲਿ ਵਿਣਸੀ ।

अक धतूरा खाधिआं कुहि कुहि खल उखलि विणसी ।

ak dhatooraa khaadhiaan kuhi kuhi khal ukhal vinasee |

We eat only wild plants of arid regions, yet our skin is peeled and pounded.


ਮਾਸੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਗਲ ਵਢਿ ਕੈ ਹਾਲੁ ਤਿਨਾੜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਹੋਵਸੀ ।

मासु खानि गल वढि कै हालु तिनाड़ा कउणु होवसी ।

maas khaan gal vadt kai haal tinaarraa kaun hovasee |

I think about the plight of those (like you) who cut the throat of others and eat their flesh.


ਗਰਬੁ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਦੇਹ ਖੇਹ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਖਾਜੁ ਅਕਾਜੁ ਕਰਸੀ ।

गरबु गरीबी देह खेह खाजु अखाजु अकाजु करसी ।

garab gareebee deh kheh khaaj akhaaj akaaj karasee |

The body of both of the proud and the humble will become dust ultimately, but even then, the body of the arrogant (lion) is inedible and that of the humble (goat) attains the status of edible.


ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ਸਭ ਕੋਇ ਮਰਸੀ ।੧੭।

जगि आइआ सभ कोइ मरसी ।१७।

jag aaeaa sabh koe marasee |17|

All who came to this world, have to die ultimately.

ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਰਹਰਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੀ ।

चरण कवल रहरासि करि गुरमुखि साधसंगति परगासी ।

charan kaval raharaas kar guramukh saadhasangat paragaasee |

By remaining in and around the lotus feet, the gurmukh receives the light of the holy congregation.


ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪਾ ਖਾਕ ਹੋਇ ਲੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਅਮਰ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ।

पैरी पै पा खाक होइ लेख अलेख अमर अबिनासी ।

pairee pai paa khaak hoe lekh alekh amar abinaasee |

Worshipping the feet and becoming the dust of the feet, one becomes detached, immortal and indestructible.


ਕਰਿ ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਆਚਮਾਨ ਆਧਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਖਲਾਸੀ ।

करि चरणोदकु आचमान आधि बिआधि उपाधि खलासी ।

kar charanodak aachamaan aadh biaadh upaadh khalaasee |

Drinking the ash of the feet of gurmukhs, freedom from all physical, mental and spiritual ailments is attained.


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ ।

गुरमति आपु गवाइआ माइआ अंदरि करनि उदासी ।

guramat aap gavaaeaa maaeaa andar karan udaasee |

Through the wisdom of the Guru, they lose their ego and do not get absorbed in maya.


ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲੀਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਸਚ ਖੰਡਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ।

सबद सुरति लिव लीणु होइ निरंकार सच खंडि निवासी ।

sabad surat liv leen hoe nirankaar sach khandd nivaasee |

Absorbing their consciousness in the word-shabad, they reside in the true abode (holy congregation) of the formless one.


ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧਿ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਅਚਰਜ ਗੁਰਦਾਸੀ ।

अबिगति गति अगाधि बोधि अकथ कथा अचरज गुरदासी ।

abigat gat agaadh bodh akath kathaa acharaj guradaasee |

The tale of the servants of the Lord is unfathomable, ineffable and manifest.


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ ।੧੮।

गुरमुखि सुख फलु आस निरासी ।१८।

guramukh sukh fal aas niraasee |18|

Remaining indifferent to hopes, is the pleasure fruit of the Gurmukhs.

ਸਣ ਵਣ ਵਾੜੀ ਖੇਤੁ ਇਕੁ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ਜਣਾਵੈ ।

सण वण वाड़ी खेतु इकु परउपकारु विकारु जणावै ।

san van vaarree khet ik praupakaar vikaar janaavai |

Hemp and cotton grow in the same field, but the use of one is benevolent while the other one is put to evil use.


ਖਲ ਕਢਾਹਿ ਵਟਾਇ ਸਣ ਰਸਾ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਬਨ੍ਹਾਵੈ ।

खल कढाहि वटाइ सण रसा बंधनु होइ बन्हावै ।

khal kadtaeh vattaae san rasaa bandhan hoe banhaavai |

After peeling off the hemp plant, rope is made, whose nooses are used to tie people in bondage.


ਖਾਸਾ ਮਲਮਲ ਸਿਰੀਸਾਫੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਕਤਾਇ ਕਪਾਹ ਵੁਣਾਵੈ ।

खासा मलमल सिरीसाफु सूतु कताइ कपाह वुणावै ।

khaasaa malamal sireesaaf soot kataae kapaah vunaavai |

On the other hand, from cotton are made coarse cloth muslin and sirisaf.


ਲਜਣੁ ਕਜਣੁ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਸਾਧੁ ਅਸਾਧੁ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਬਿਰਦਾਵੈ ।

लजणु कजणु होइ कै साधु असाधु बिरदु बिरदावै ।

lajan kajan hoe kai saadh asaadh birad biradaavai |

Cotton, in the form of cloth, covers the modesty of others and protects the dharma of sadhus as well as wicked persons.


ਸੰਗ ਦੋਖ ਨਿਰਦੋਖ ਮੋਖ ਸੰਗ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਨ ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ।

संग दोख निरदोख मोख संग सुभाउ न साधु मिटावै ।

sang dokh niradokh mokh sang subhaau na saadh mittaavai |

The sadhus, even when they associate with the evil, never repudiate their saintly nature.


ਤ੍ਰਪੜੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਗ ਧੂੜਿ ਧੁਮਾਵੈ ।

त्रपड़ु होवै धरमसाल साधसंगति पग धूड़ि धुमावै ।

traparr hovai dharamasaal saadhasangat pag dhoorr dhumaavai |

When the hemp transformed into coarse cloth, is brought to the holy places for spreading in the holy congregation, it also becomes blest after coming in touch with the dust of the feet of the sadhus.


ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਸਣ ਕਿਰਤਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ।

कटि कुटि सण किरतासु करि हरि जसु लिखि पुराण सुणावै ।

katt kutt san kirataas kar har jas likh puraan sunaavai |

Also, when after getting a thorough beating, paper is made of it, the holy men write praises of the Lord on it and recite the same for others.


ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕਰੈ ਜਨ ਭਾਵੈ ।੧੯।

पतित पुनीत करै जन भावै ।१९।

patit puneet karai jan bhaavai |19|

The holy congregation makes the fallen ones also holy.

ਪਥਰ ਚਿਤੁ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਹੈ ਚੂਨਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਗੀਂ ਦਧਾ ।

पथर चितु कठोरु है चूना होवै अगीं दधा ।

pathar chit katthor hai choonaa hovai ageen dadhaa |

When the hard-hearted stone is burnt, it turns into limestone.


ਅਗ ਬੁਝੈ ਜਲੁ ਛਿੜਕਿਐ ਚੂਨਾ ਅਗਿ ਉਠੇ ਅਤਿ ਵਧਾ ।

अग बुझै जलु छिड़किऐ चूना अगि उठे अति वधा ।

ag bujhai jal chhirrakiai choonaa ag utthe at vadhaa |

Sprinkling of water extinguishes fire, but in the case of lime water, it produces great heat.


ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਏ ਵਿਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਛੁਟੈ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਬਧਾ ।

पाणी पाए विहु न जाइ अगनि न छुटै अवगुण बधा ।

paanee paae vihu na jaae agan na chhuttai avagun badhaa |

Its poison does not go away even if water is thrown on it, and its foul fire remains in it.


ਜੀਭੈ ਉਤੈ ਰਖਿਆ ਛਾਲੇ ਪਵਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਖ ਲਧਾ ।

जीभै उतै रखिआ छाले पवनि संगि दुख लधा ।

jeebhai utai rakhiaa chhaale pavan sang dukh ladhaa |

If put on tongue, it creates painful blisters.


ਪਾਨ ਸੁਪਾਰੀ ਕਥੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਸੁਰੰਗੁ ਸੰਪੂਰਣੁ ਸਧਾ ।

पान सुपारी कथु मिलि रंगु सुरंगु संपूरणु सधा ।

paan supaaree kath mil rang surang sanpooran sadhaa |

But getting company of betel leaf, betel nut and catechu, its color becomes bright, beautiful and completely refined.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੁ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਹਾ ਅਸਾਧ ਸਮਧਾ ।

साधसंगति मिलि साधु होइ गुरमुखि महा असाध समधा ।

saadhasangat mil saadh hoe guramukh mahaa asaadh samadhaa |

Similarly, joining the holy congregation, becoming holy men, the gurmukhs get rid of even the chronic ailments.


ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਲੁ ਅਧਾ ।੨੦।੨੫। ਪੰਝੀਹ ।

आपु गवाइ मिलै पलु अधा ।२०।२५। पंझीह ।

aap gavaae milai pal adhaa |20|25| panjheeh |

When the ego is lost, God is visualized even in half a moment.
