The mirror (in the form of world) is in the hand (of the Lord) and man sees of himself in it.

ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਦਾ ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਭੇਖੈ ।

God visualizes and makes men see the guises and philosophies of six Schools (in this mirror).

Man is reflected (in the mirror) in exactly the same way as is his propensity.

हसदे हसदा देखीऐ सो रूप सरेखै ।

The laughing person finds a laughing form in it.

ਰੋਦੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਰੋਵਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਨਿਮਖ ਨਿਮੇਖੈ ।

रोदै दिसै रोवदा होए निमख निमेखै ।

rodai disai rovadaa hoe nimakh nimekhai |

Whereas the wailing person finds himself (as well as everybody) there in the weeping posture. Same is the case of a clever person.

The Lord Himself is pervading this world-mirror but He is specifically perceivable in and through the holy congregation (satsangat).

jiau jantree hath jantru lai sabh raag vajaae |

The Lord resembles to an instrumentalist, who holding the instrument in his hand, plays all the different measures on it.

Listening to the tunes played, he remains immersed in them and eulogizes the Supreme.

Merging his consciousness in the Word, he becomes elated and makes others also delighted.

He (the Lord) himself posing to be hungry, goes into the kitchen.

And he cooks the food kneading in it all sorts of delights.

Himself eating and getting satiated, He showers praises on the dainty dishes.

He Himself is the delight as well as the delighted. He is the juice as well as the tongue which relishes its taste.

He Himself spreads the bedstead and Himself reclines on it.

Entering into the dreams, He wanders through far off regions.

rank raau raau rank hoe dukh sukh vich paundaa |

Making the poor a king and the king a poor person, He puts them in pain and pleasure.

ਤਤਾ ਸੀਅਰਾ ਹੋਇ ਜਲੁ ਆਵਟਣੁ ਖਉਂਦਾ ।

In the form of water, He Himself gets hot and cold.

Amidst sorrows and delights, He moves around and responds to the call when called.

The gurmukh, realizing His nature of permeating through all, attains happiness.

samasar varasai svaant boond jiau sabhanee thaaee |

The drops of rain in the svati nakstr (fifteenth star formation among the twenty seven star formations known in india) fall equally at all places.

ਜਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਈ ।

जल अंदरि जलु होइ मिलै धरती बहु भाई ।

jal andar jal hoe milai dharatee bahu bhaaee |

And falling into water, they merge in water and on earth, they become earth.

ਕਿਰਖ ਬਿਰਖ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਘਣੇ ਫਲੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਸੁਹਾਈ ।

किरख बिरख रस कस घणे फलु फुलु सुहाई ।

kirakh birakh ras kas ghane fal ful suhaaee |

At places, it transforms into plants and vegetation, sweet and bitter; at some places, they are well adorned with myriad flowers and fruits.

ਕੇਲੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਪੂਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੁਖੁਦਾਈ ।

केले विचि कपूरु होइ सीतलु सुखुदाई ।

kele vich kapoor hoe seetal sukhudaaee |

Falling on the banana leaves, they transform into cooling camphor.

ਮੋਤੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਿਪ ਮੁਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਮੋਲੁ ਮੁਲਾਈ ।

मोती होवै सिप मुहि बहु मोलु मुलाई ।

motee hovai sip muhi bahu mol mulaaee |

The same when they fall into a sea-shell become pearls.

ਬਿਸੀਅਰ ਦੇ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਲਕੂਟ ਚਿਤਵੇ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ।

बिसीअर दे महि कालकूट चितवे बुरिआई ।

biseear de meh kaalakoott chitave buriaaee |

Gone into the mouth of a snake, they turn into deadly poison and always think evil.

The Lord pervades all places and sits in state in the holy congregation (sadhsangat).

ਸੋਈ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਿਉ ਕੈਹਾਂ ਹੋਈ ।

सोई तांबा रंग संगि जिउ कैहां होई ।

Mixing with tin, the copper transforms into bronze.

ਸੋਈ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਜਿਸਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿਤਲ ਅਵਲੋਈ ।

सोई तांबा जिसत मिलि पितल अवलोई ।

The same copper mixed with zinc appears in the form of brass.

सोई सीसे संगती भंगार भुलोई ।

Copper mixed with lead changes into pewter, a brittle metal called bharath in the Punjab.

ਤਾਂਬਾ ਪਾਰਸਿ ਪਰਸਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਕੰਚਨ ਸੋਈ ।

तांबा पारसि परसिआ होइ कंचन सोई ।

With the touch of the philosopher’s stone, the same copper becomes gold.

ਸੋਈ ਤਾਂਬਾ ਭਸਮ ਹੋਇ ਅਉਖਧ ਕਰਿ ਭੋਈ ।

सोई तांबा भसम होइ अउखध करि भोई ।

soee taanbaa bhasam hoe aaukhadh kar bhoee |

When transformed into ashes, copper becomes a medicine.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਈ ।੬।

आपे आपि वरतदा संगति गुण गोई ।६।

Likewise, though the Lord is omnipresent, yet the effects of the company of man are different over men. Knowing this much, the Lord is eulogized in the holy congregation.

ਪਾਣੀ ਕਾਲੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਿਉ ਕਾਲਾ ਦਿਸੈ ।

पाणी काले रंगि विचि जिउ काला दिसै ।

paanee kaale rang vich jiau kaalaa disai |

As water mixed with black dye looks black.

ਰਤਾ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਸਲਿਸੈ ।

रता रते रंगि विचि मिलि मेलि सलिसै ।

rataa rate rang vich mil mel salisai |

And mixed with red water becomes red.

ਪੀਲੈ ਪੀਲਾ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਹਿਤੁ ਜੇਹੀ ਵਿਸੈ ।

पीलै पीला होइ मिलै हितु जेही विसै ।

peelai peelaa hoe milai hit jehee visai |

It turns out to be yellow adding yellow dye.

ਸਾਵਾ ਸਾਵੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਭਿ ਰੰਗ ਸਰਿਸੈ ।

सावा सावे रंगि मिलि सभि रंग सरिसै ।

saavaa saave rang mil sabh rang sarisai |

And with the green becomes pleasure-giving green.

ਤਤਾ ਠੰਢਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਹਿਤ ਜਿਸੈ ਤਿਸੈ ।

तता ठंढा होइ कै हित जिसै तिसै ।

According to the seasons, it becomes hot or cold.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਿਸੈ ।੭।

आपे आपि वरतदा गुरमुखि सुखु जिसै ।७।

aape aap varatadaa guramukh sukh jisai |7|

Likewise, the Lord God operates to the needs (of creatures). The Guru-oriented (gurmukh) who is full of joy understands this mystery.

ਦੀਵਾ ਬਲੈ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਹੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੇ ।

Fire lights the lamp and light scatters in the darkness.

ਦੀਪਕ ਵਿਚਹੁੰ ਮਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਕੰਮ ਆਇ ਲਿਖੇਰੇ ।

दीपक विचहुं मसु होइ कंम आइ लिखेरे ।

deepak vichahun mas hoe kam aae likhere |

The ink obtained from the lamp is used by the writer.

ਕਜਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਲੇ ਭਲੇਰੇ ।

कजलु होवै कामणी संगि भले भलेरे ।

kajal hovai kaamanee sang bhale bhalere |

From that lamp, women get collyrium. Therefore, by living in the company of good persons, one engages himself in good deeds.

ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਲਿਖੈ ਦਫਤਰ ਅਗਲੇਰੇ ।

मसवाणी हरि जसु लिखै दफतर अगलेरे ।

masavaanee har jas likhai dafatar agalere |

With the same ink are written eulogies of the Lord and the clerk writes accounts in his office.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਉਫੇਰੇ ।੮।

Only gurmukh realizes this fact, that the Lord pervades all around.

ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੀਉ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਰਦਾ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ।

बिरखु होवै बीउ बीजीऐ करदा पासारा ।

birakh hovai beeo beejeeai karadaa paasaaraa |

From seed comes up the tree and then it spreads further.

ਜੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪੇਡ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਬਹੁ ਡਾਲ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ।

जड़ अंदरि पेड बाहरा बहु डाल बिसथारा ।

jarr andar pedd baaharaa bahu ddaal bisathaaraa |

Root extends in earth, the stem outside and the branches extend all around.

ਪਤ ਫੁਲ ਫਲ ਫਲੀਦਾ ਰਸ ਰੰਗ ਸਵਾਰਾ ।

पत फुल फल फलीदा रस रंग सवारा ।

pat ful fal faleedaa ras rang savaaraa |

It becomes full of flowers, fruits, and means of many colors and delightful essences.

ਵਾਸੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਉਲਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਵਡ ਪਰਵਾਰਾ ।

वासु निवासु उलासु करि होइ वड परवारा ।

vaas nivaas ulaas kar hoe vadd paravaaraa |

In its flowers and fruits dwell fragrance and joy and now this seed becomes a large family.

ਫਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੀਉ ਸੰਜੀਉ ਹੋਇ ਫਲ ਫਲੇ ਹਜਾਰਾ ।

फल विचि बीउ संजीउ होइ फल फले हजारा ।

fal vich beeo sanjeeo hoe fal fale hajaaraa |

Again, the fruit by producing seeds becomes the source of myriad flowers and fruits.

Understanding of this very fact that the Lord alone is among all makes the gurmukh liberated.

होवे सूतु कपाह दा करि ताणा वाणा ।

From cotton the thread and then its warp and waft are prepared.

ਸੂਤਹੁ ਕਪੜੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਆਖਾਣ ਵਖਾਣਾ ।

सूतहु कपड़ु जाणीऐ आखाण वखाणा ।

It is well known that from that very thread the cloth is made.

ਚਉਸੀ ਤੈ ਚਉਤਾਰ ਹੋਇ ਗੰਗਾ ਜਲੁ ਜਾਣਾ ।

चउसी तै चउतार होइ गंगा जलु जाणा ।

chausee tai chautaar hoe gangaa jal jaanaa |

Made of the four threads are what are known as chausi, gangajali, etc. (in India).

ਖਾਸਾ ਮਲਮਲ ਸਿਰੀਸਾਫੁ ਤਨ ਸੁਖ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ।

खासा मलमल सिरीसाफु तन सुख मनि भाणा ।

khaasaa malamal sireesaaf tan sukh man bhaanaa |

The superior clothes (malmal, sirisaph) made out of it impart comfort and pleasure to the body.

पग दुपटा चोलणा पटुका परवाणा ।
