Discipleship of the Guru is such a difficult task that only a rare one can understand it.
ਪੀਰਾ ਪੀਰੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਵਖਾਣੈ ।
पीरा पीरु वखाणीऐ गुरु गुरां वखाणै ।
peeraa peer vakhaaneeai gur guraan vakhaanai |
He, who knows it, becomes guide of spiritual guides and chief Guru of Gurus.
ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਿ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੈ ।
गुरु चेला चेला गुरू करि चोज विडाणै ।
gur chelaa chelaa guroo kar choj viddaanai |
In this stage, the wonderful feat of becoming Guru by the disciple and vice-versa is enacted.
ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਖੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੈ ।
सो गुरु सोई सिखु है जोती जोति समाणै ।
so gur soee sikh hai jotee jot samaanai |
Externally the Sikh and Guru remain as they were, but internally, the light of the one permeates the other.
ਇਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਇਕੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ।
इकु गुरु इकु सिखु है गुरु सबदि सिञाणै ।
eik gur ik sikh hai gur sabad siyaanai |
Becoming the Sikh of the One Guru, the disciple understands the word of the Guru.
ਮਿਹਰ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਮੇਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ਸੁ ਭਾਣੈ ।੧।
मिहर मुहबति मेलु करि भउ भाउ सु भाणै ।१।
mihar muhabat mel kar bhau bhaau su bhaanai |1|
Grace of the Guru and love of the disciple meeting together in the divine order join each other in the form of the love of the Guru and fear in the mind of the disciple to create a balanced and handsome personality.

गुर सिखहु गुरसिखु है पीर पीरहु कोई ।
gur sikhahu gurasikh hai peer peerahu koee |
By the teachings of the Guru, many become disciples of the Guru, but some rare one becomes the Guru like that Guru.
ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸੋਈ ।
सबदि सुरति चेला गुरू परमेसरु सोई ।
sabad surat chelaa guroo paramesar soee |
Only the practitioner of the word (shabad) and consciousness can attain the status of Guru-God.
ਦਰਸਨਿ ਦਿਸਟਿ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹੋਈ ।
दरसनि दिसटि धिआन धरि गुर मूरति होई ।
darasan disatt dhiaan dhar gur moorat hoee |
Such a disciple concentrating on the philosophy of the Guru (and making it a part of daily conduct) himself becomes a likeness of Guru.
ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਲੋਈ ।
सबद सुरति करि कीरतनु सतिसंगि विलोई ।
sabad surat kar keeratan satisang viloee |
Making his consciousness attentive to Word through recitation of Naam, he merges in the holy congregation.
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਈ ।
वाहिगुरू गुर मंत्र है जपि हउमै खोई ।
vaahiguroo gur mantr hai jap haumai khoee |
His Guru-manta is Vahiguru, whose recitation erases egotism.
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਣ ਗੁਣੀ ਪਰੋਈ ।੨।
आपु गवाए आपि है गुण गुणी परोई ।२।
aap gavaae aap hai gun gunee paroee |2|
Losing egotism and merging into the qualities of the supreme Lord, he himself becomes full of qualities.

He, who has the opportunity of the glimpse of the Guru, is a fortunate person, well aware of the virtues of love and awe.
ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਹੈ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਅਰੋਗੀ ।
सबद सुरति बैरागु है सुख सहज अरोगी ।
sabad surat bairaag hai sukh sehaj arogee |
Adopting the renunciation, in the form of Word consciousness, he residing in equipoise, is free from all maladies.
ਮਨ ਬਚ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਜੋਗੀਸਰੁ ਜੋਗੀ ।
मन बच करम न भरमु है जोगीसरु जोगी ।
man bach karam na bharam hai jogeesar jogee |
His mind, speech and actions are not engrossed in delusions, and he is king of the yogis.
ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਵਣਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸ ਭੋਗੀ ।
पिरम पिआला पीवणा अंम्रित रस भोगी ।
piram piaalaa peevanaa amrit ras bhogee |
He is the quaffer of the cup of love and remains merged in the delight of nectar.
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਣੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪੀ ਅਪਿਓ ਅਸੋਗੀ ।੩।
गिआनु धिआनु सिमरणु मिलै पी अपिओ असोगी ।३।
giaan dhiaan simaran milai pee apio asogee |3|
Drinking the elixir of knowledge, meditation and remembrance of the Lord, he has gone beyond all sorrows and sufferings.

गुरमुखि सुख फलु पिरम रसु किउ आखि वखाणै ।
guramukh sukh fal piram ras kiau aakh vakhaanai |
Quaffing the elixir of love giving fruits of delight, how could a gurmukh explain that ineffable joy?
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖਣਾ ਓਹੁ ਸਾਉ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ।
सुणि सुणि आखणु आखणा ओहु साउ न जाणै ।
sun sun aakhan aakhanaa ohu saau na jaanai |
Much is said and listened to, but the people remain ignorant of its real taste.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਥਿ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣੈ ।
ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु मिलि कथि वेद पुराणै ।
brahamaa bisan mahes mil kath ved puraanai |
In the Vedas and Puranas, Brahma, Visnu and Mahesa have talked enough about the delight of love.
ਚਾਰਿ ਕਤੇਬਾਂ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਦੀਨ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੈ ।
चारि कतेबां आखीअनि दीन मुसलमाणै ।
chaar katebaan aakheean deen musalamaanai |
One can see the four scriptures of Islam religion in this context.
ਸੇਖਨਾਗੁ ਸਿਮਰਣੁ ਕਰੈ ਸਾਂਗੀਤ ਸੁਹਾਣੈ ।
सेखनागु सिमरणु करै सांगीत सुहाणै ।
sekhanaag simaran karai saangeet suhaanai |
Sesanag also remembers it and all musical measures also are busy in adorning it.
ਅਨਹਦ ਨਾਦ ਅਸੰਖ ਸੁਣਿ ਹੋਏ ਹੈਰਾਣੈ ।
अनहद नाद असंख सुणि होए हैराणै ।
anahad naad asankh sun hoe hairaanai |
One becomes full of wonder after listening to the myriads of unstruck melodies.
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਕਰਿ ਨੇਤਿ ਨੇਤਿ ਪੀਲਾਏ ਭਾਣੈ ।੪।
अकथ कथा करि नेति नेति पीलाए भाणै ।४।
akath kathaa kar net net peelaae bhaanai |4|
But the tale of that elixir, love, is ineffable, which one fortunately drinks in the will of the Lord.

guramukh sukh fal piram ras chhia ras hairaanaa |
Even the six tastes (satras) are full of wonder before the gurmukh’s delightful fruit in the form of elixir of love.
ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਤਰਸਦੇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ।
छतीह अंम्रित तरसदे विसमाद विडाणा ।
chhateeh amrit tarasade visamaad viddaanaa |
36 types of meals, getting awe full before its grandeur, crave for being equal to it.
ਨਿਝਰ ਧਾਰ ਹਜਾਰ ਹੋਇ ਭੈ ਚਕਿਤ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ।
निझर धार हजार होइ भै चकित भुलाणा ।
nijhar dhaar hajaar hoe bhai chakit bhulaanaa |
Even thousands of currents of delight flowing through the tenth gate become full of wonder and fear before it.
ਇੜਾ ਪਿੰਗੁਲਾ ਸੁਖਮਨਾ ਸੋਹੰ ਨ ਸਮਾਣਾ ।
इड़ा पिंगुला सुखमना सोहं न समाणा ।
eirraa pingulaa sukhamanaa sohan na samaanaa |
The taste of the recitation of Soham in the base of ira, pingala and sukhmna nerves is not equal to the taste of the elixir of love.
ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜਾਉ ਚੜਿ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ।
वीह इकीह चड़ाउ चड़ि परचा परवाणा ।
veeh ikeeh charraau charr parachaa paravaanaa |
Going beyond the animate and inanimate i.e. the whole world, the consciousness is merged in the Lord.
ਪੀਤੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਹੰਘਈ ਆਖਾਣ ਵਖਾਣਾ ।੫।
पीतै बोलि न हंघई आखाण वखाणा ।५।
peetai bol na hanghee aakhaan vakhaanaa |5|
Then the situation turns out to be such that as one cannot speak while drinking, the talk of drinking of the elixir of love becomes ineffable.

ਗਲੀ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਮੁਹੁ ਖਾਲੀ ।
गली सादु न आवई जिचरु मुहु खाली ।
galee saad na aavee jichar muhu khaalee |
So long as a tasty object enters not the mouth, mere talking about taste cannot bring any joy.
ਮੁਹੁ ਭਰਿਐ ਕਿਉਂ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਰਸ ਜੀਭ ਰਸਾਲੀ ।
मुहु भरिऐ किउं बोलीऐ रस जीभ रसाली ।
muhu bhariai kiaun boleeai ras jeebh rasaalee |
When holding the object, the mouth is full of taste and tongue full of delight, how could one speak?
ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਉਲੰਘਿ ਨਹਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀ ।
सबदु सुरति सिमरण उलंघि नहि नदरि निहाली ।
sabad surat simaran ulangh neh nadar nihaalee |
Going past the stage of recitation, those whose consciousness gets merged in the Word, do not see anything except the Lord.
ਪੰਥੁ ਕੁਪੰਥੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਅਲਮਸਤ ਖਿਆਲੀ ।
पंथु कुपंथु न सुझई अलमसत खिआली ।
panth kupanth na sujhee alamasat khiaalee |
For the people drenched in love, good or bad ways have no meaning.
ਡਗਮਗ ਚਾਲ ਸੁਢਾਲ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ।
डगमग चाल सुढाल है गुरमति निराली ।
ddagamag chaal sudtaal hai guramat niraalee |
Wobbling gait of the person full of love for the wisdom of the Guru (gurmat) looks distinctly beautiful.
ਚੜਿਆ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਲੁਕਈ ਢਕਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਕੁਨਾਲੀ ।੬।
चड़िआ चंदु न लुकई ढकि जोति कुनाली ।६।
charriaa chand na lukee dtak jot kunaalee |6|
Now the moon emerged in the sky of heart, cannot remain hidden, in spite of efforts to cover its light with flour kneading basin.

Lakhs of sandals and lakhs of fragrant sticks may be mixed.
ਲਖ ਕਪੂਰ ਕਥੂਰੀਆ ਅੰਬਰ ਮਹਿਕੰਦੇ ।
लख कपूर कथूरीआ अंबर महिकंदे ।
lakh kapoor kathooreea anbar mahikande |
With lakhs of camphors and musks, the sky may be made full of fragrance.
ਲਖ ਲਖ ਗਉੜੇ ਮੇਦ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੇਸਰ ਚਮਕੰਦੇ ।
लख लख गउड़े मेद मिलि केसर चमकंदे ।
lakh lakh gaurre med mil kesar chamakande |
If lakhs of saffron are mixed with yellow pigment of cow.
ਸਭ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਰਲਾਇ ਕੈ ਅਰਗਜਾ ਕਰੰਦੇ ।
सभ सुगंध रलाइ कै अरगजा करंदे ।
sabh sugandh ralaae kai aragajaa karande |
And of all these fragrances, an incense stick is prepared.
ਲਖ ਅਰਗਜੇ ਫੁਲੇਲ ਫੁਲ ਫੁਲਵਾੜੀ ਸੰਦੇ ।
लख अरगजे फुलेल फुल फुलवाड़ी संदे ।
lakh aragaje fulel ful fulavaarree sande |
Then lakhs of such sticks may be mixed with the fragrance of flowers and scents.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸੁ ਵਾਸੂ ਨ ਲਹੰਦੇ ।੭।
गुरमुखि सुख फल पिरम रसु वासू न लहंदे ।७।
guramukh sukh fal piram ras vaasoo na lahande |7|
Even then all these cannot withstand the fragrance of the elixir of love of the gurmukh.

Lakhs of handsome people reside in the Indrapuri.
ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗ ਸੁਰੰਗ ਲਖ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਰਹੰਦੇ ।
रंग बिरंग सुरंग लख बैकुंठ रहंदे ।
rang birang surang lakh baikuntth rahande |
Lakhs of beautiful people reside in the heaven.
ਲਖ ਜੋਬਨ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਵੇਸ ਕਰੰਦੇ ।
लख जोबन सीगार लख लख वेस करंदे ।
lakh joban seegaar lakh lakh ves karande |
Lkahs of young people wear many types of attires.
ਲਖ ਦੀਵੇ ਲਖ ਤਾਰਿਆਂ ਜੋਤਿ ਸੂਰਜ ਚੰਦੇ ।
लख दीवे लख तारिआं जोति सूरज चंदे ।
lakh deeve lakh taariaan jot sooraj chande |
Lakhs are the lights of lakhs of lamps, stars, suns and moons.
ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਲਖ ਮਣੀ ਜਗਮਗ ਟਹਕੰਦੇ ।
रतन जवाहर लख मणी जगमग टहकंदे ।
ratan javaahar lakh manee jagamag ttahakande |
Lakhs of lights of jewels and rubies also glitter.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸ ਜੋਤੀ ਨ ਪੁਜੰਦੇ ।੮।
गुरमुखि सुख फलु पिरम रस जोती न पुजंदे ।८।
guramukh sukh fal piram ras jotee na pujande |8|
But all these lights cannot reach up to the light of the elixir of love i.e. all these lights are pale before it.

chaar padaarath ridh sidh nidh lakh karorree |
In all of the four ideals of life, riddhis, siddhis and lakhs of treasures.
ਲਖ ਪਾਰਸ ਲਖ ਪਾਰਿਜਾਤ ਲਖ ਲਖਮੀ ਜੋੜੀ ।
लख पारस लख पारिजात लख लखमी जोड़ी ।
lakh paaras lakh paarijaat lakh lakhamee jorree |
Lakhs of philosopher’s stones, lakhs of wish fulfilling trees and lakhs of wealth are collected.
ਲਖ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿ ਕਾਮਧੇਣੁ ਚਤੁਰੰਗ ਚਮੋੜੀ ।
लख चिंतामणि कामधेणु चतुरंग चमोड़ी ।
lakh chintaaman kaamadhen chaturang chamorree |
Lakhs of fabulous gems supposed to yield anything desired and wish fulfilling cows (kamdhenu) are also added to all this.
ਮਾਣਕ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੀਰਿਆ ਨਿਰਮੋਲ ਮਹੋੜੀ ।
माणक मोती हीरिआ निरमोल महोड़ी ।
maanak motee heeriaa niramol mahorree |
Again, invaluable jewels, pearls and diamonds are kept with all this.
ਲਖ ਕਵਿਲਾਸ ਸੁਮੇਰੁ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਰਾਜ ਬਹੋੜੀ ।
लख कविलास सुमेरु लख लख राज बहोड़ी ।
lakh kavilaas sumer lakh lakh raaj bahorree |
Lakhs of kailas and Sumer mountains are also gathered together.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲੁ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸੁ ਮੁਲੁ ਅਮੁਲੁ ਸੁ ਥੋੜੀ ।੯।
गुरमुखि सुख फलु पिरम रसु मुलु अमुलु सु थोड़ी ।९।
guramukh sukh fal piram ras mul amul su thorree |9|
Even then they all have no standing at all before the invaluable elixir of love of the gurmukhs.

The gurmukhs identify the wave of delightful fruit among the illusionary waves of the world ocean.
ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਸਮਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਲਖ ਲਹਰੀ ਅੰਗਾ ।
लख दरीआउ समाउ करि लख लहरी अंगा ।
lakh dareeaau samaau kar lakh laharee angaa |
They bear upon their body lakhs of waves of worldly rivers.
ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਖ ਤੀਰਥ ਗੰਗਾ ।
लख दरीआउ समुंद विचि लख तीरथ गंगा ।
lakh dareeaau samund vich lakh teerath gangaa |
Lakhs of rivers are there in the ocean and likewise many are pilgrimage centers on the Ganges.
ਲਖ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਗੜਾੜ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗਾ ।
लख समुंद गड़ाड़ विचि बहु रंग बिरंगा ।
lakh samund garraarr vich bahu rang birangaa |
In the oceans are lakhs of seas of varying forms and hues.
ਲਖ ਗੜਾੜ ਤਰੰਗ ਵਿਚਿ ਲਖ ਅਝੁ ਕਿਣੰਗਾ ।
लख गड़ाड़ तरंग विचि लख अझु किणंगा ।
lakh garraarr tarang vich lakh ajh kinangaa |
Such oceans may be visualized in one drop of the tears of love.
ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਵਣਾ ਕੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਨ ਚੰਗਾ ।੧੦।
पिरम पिआला पीवणा को बुरा न चंगा ।१०।

Nothing is good or bad for the man, who quaffs from the cup of love.

From one resonance, the Oankar, created the whole universe.

The Oankar assumed the form of lakhs of universes.
ਪੰਜਿ ਤਤੁ ਉਤਪਤਿ ਲਖ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਲੋਅ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ।
पंजि ततु उतपति लख त्रै लोअ सुहाइआ ।
panj tat utapat lakh trai loa suhaaeaa |
Five elements were created, lakhs of productions were made, and all the three worlds were adorned.
ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰਵਰ ਸਫਲ ਦਰੀਆਵ ਚਲਾਇਆ ।
जलि थलि गिरि तरवर सफल दरीआव चलाइआ ।
jal thal gir taravar safal dareeaav chalaaeaa |
He created water, earth, mountains, trees and made the holy rivers flow.
ਲਖ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਸਮਾਉ ਕਰਿ ਤਿਲ ਤੁਲ ਨ ਤੁਲਾਇਆ ।
लख दरीआउ समाउ करि तिल तुल न तुलाइआ ।
lakh dareeaau samaau kar til tul na tulaaeaa |
He created great oceans that subsume in them lakhs of rivers.
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਇਕ ਅਤੋਲਵੀ ਲੇਖਾ ਨ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ।
कुदरति इक अतोलवी लेखा न लिखाइआ ।
kudarat ik atolavee lekhaa na likhaaeaa |
A fraction of their grandeur cannot be explained. Only nature is infinite whose expanse cannot be counted.
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਕਾਦਰੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ।੧੧।
कुदरति कीम न जाणीऐ कादरु किनि पाइआ ।११।

Ineffable is the taste of the joy of love, which is the pleasure fruit of the gurmukhs.
ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਕੋ ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਈ ।
पारावारु अपारु है को आइ न जाई ।
paaraavaar apaar hai ko aae na jaaee |
It’s this shore and the yonder one are beyond limits, none can reach it.
ਆਦਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਪਰਜੰਤ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਰਮਾਦਿ ਵਡਾਈ ।
आदि अंति परजंत नाहि परमादि वडाई ।
aad ant parajant naeh paramaad vaddaaee |
Its beginning and end are unfathomable, and its grandeur is most eminent.
ਹਾਥ ਨ ਪਾਇ ਅਥਾਹ ਦੀ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਸਮਾਈ ।
हाथ न पाइ अथाह दी असगाह समाई ।
haath na paae athaah dee asagaah samaaee |
It is so much that many of the oceans immerse in it, yet its depth remains unknown.
ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਬੂੰਦ ਇਕ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ।
पिरम पिआले बूंद इक किनि कीमति पाई ।
piram piaale boond ik kin keemat paaee |
Who could evaluate even one drop of such a cup of love.
ਅਗਮਹੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਬੋਧ ਗੁਰ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਈ ।੧੨।
अगमहु अगम अगाधि बोध गुर अलखु लखाई ।१२।
agamahu agam agaadh bodh gur alakh lakhaaee |12|
It is inaccessible and its knowledge is unfathomable, but the Guru can make one realize this imperceptible cup of love.

guramukh sukh fal piram ras til alakh alekhai |
Even a fraction of pleasure fruit of gurmukhs, in the form of joy of love, is imperceptible and beyond all accounts.
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੂਨਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਸੇਖੈ ।
लख चउरासीह जूनि विचि जीअ जंत विसेखै ।
lakh chauraaseeh joon vich jeea jant visekhai |
Many are the creatures in the 84 lakhs species.
ਸਭਨਾ ਦੀ ਰੋਮਾਵਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖੈ ।
सभना दी रोमावली बहु बिधि बहु भेखै ।
sabhanaa dee romaavalee bahu bidh bahu bhekhai |
They all have variegated color of their trichomes.
ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਲਖ ਲਖ ਸਿਰ ਮੁਹੁ ਲਖ ਸਰੇਖੈ ।
रोमि रोमि लख लख सिर मुहु लख सरेखै ।
rom rom lakh lakh sir muhu lakh sarekhai |
If to their single hair, lakhs of heads and mouths were joined.
ਲਖ ਲਖ ਮੁਹਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਜੀਭੁ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਦੇਖੈ ।
लख लख मुहि मुहि जीभु करि सुणि बोलै देखै ।
lakh lakh muhi muhi jeebh kar sun bolai dekhai |
If such lakhs of mouths could speak through their lakhs of tongues.
ਸੰਖ ਅਸੰਖ ਇਕੀਹ ਵੀਹ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਨ ਨਿਮੇਖੈ ।੧੩।
संख असंख इकीह वीह समसरि न निमेखै ।१३।
sankh asankh ikeeh veeh samasar na nimekhai |13|
If myriad times more the world were created, even then it cannot equal the one moment (of the delight of love).

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸੁ ਹੁਇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮੇਲਾ ।
गुरमुखि सुख फल पिरम रसु हुइ गुरसिख मेला ।
guramukh sukh fal piram ras hue gurasikh melaa |
After meeting the Guru i.e. after adopting the teachings of the Guru, the gurmukh receives the pleasure-fruit of the joy of love.
ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰਚਾਇ ਕੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੇਹੁ ਨਵੇਲਾ ।
सबद सुरति परचाइ कै नित नेहु नवेला ।
sabad surat parachaae kai nit nehu navelaa |
The Guru merges the consciousness of the disciple into the Word and creates ever-new love for the Lord in it.
ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਚੜਾਉ ਚੜਿ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਚੇਲਾ ।
वीह इकीह चड़ाउ चड़ि सिख गुरु गुरु चेला ।
veeh ikeeh charraau charr sikh gur gur chelaa |
Thus, getting above the worldliness, the disciple becomes Guru and the Guru disciple.
ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਐ ਅਜਰੁ ਜਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ।
अपिउ पीऐ अजरु जरै गुर सेव सुहेला ।
apiau peeai ajar jarai gur sev suhelaa |
Now he quaffs the unbearable drink of the juice of love and further bears the unbearable. But all this becomes possible only through the service of the Guru.
ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਹਾਰਿ ਜਿਣੈ ਵਹੇਲਾ ।
जीवदिआ मरि चलणा हारि जिणै वहेला ।
jeevadiaa mar chalanaa haar jinai vahelaa |
(To attain the delight of love) One has to put to death his ego and by becoming indifferent to the world has to conquer it.
ਸਿਲ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਚਟਣੀ ਲਖ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੇਲਾ ।੧੪।
सिल अलूणी चटणी लख अंम्रित पेला ।१४।
sil aloonee chattanee lakh amrit pelaa |14|
One who has licked this tasteless stone i.e. who has adopted the way of desireless devotion, he alone throws away lakhs of delights equal to the immortalizing elixirs.

ਪਾਣੀ ਕਾਠੁ ਨ ਡੋਬਈ ਪਾਲੇ ਦੀ ਲਜੈ ।
पाणी काठु न डोबई पाले दी लजै ।
paanee kaatth na ddobee paale dee lajai |
Water does not drown the wood because it lives up to its natural repute of nurturing the things (water rears up the vegetation).
ਸਿਰਿ ਕਲਵਤ੍ਰੁ ਧਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਭਜੈ ।
सिरि कलवत्रु धराइ कै सिरि चड़िआ भजै ।
sir kalavatru dharaae kai sir charriaa bhajai |
It bears the vessel on its head like a saw because the vessel shears the water and moves ahead.
ਲੋਹੇ ਜੜੀਐ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਭਾਰਿ ਭਰੇ ਨ ਤਜੈ ।
लोहे जड़ीऐ बोहिथा भारि भरे न तजै ।
lohe jarreeai bohithaa bhaar bhare na tajai |
Of course, iron is studded into the wood, but water bears the burden of it also.
ਪੇਟੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਿ ਰਖਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਪੜਦਾ ਕਜੈ ।
पेटै अंदरि अगि रखि तिसु पड़दा कजै ।
pettai andar ag rakh tis parradaa kajai |
Water knows that its enemy fire exists in wood but still it covers up this fact and does not drown it.
ਅਗਰੈ ਡੋਬੈ ਜਾਣਿ ਕੈ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ ਧਜੈ ।
अगरै डोबै जाणि कै निरमोलक धजै ।
agarai ddobai jaan kai niramolak dhajai |
The sandal wood is knowingly drowned so that it is proved to be the real sandal wood and its price may be fixed higher.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਛਡਿ ਖਬੈ ਸਜੈ ।੧੫।
गुरमुखि मारगि चलणा छडि खबै सजै ।१५।
guramukh maarag chalanaa chhadd khabai sajai |15|
The way of the gurmukhs is also the same; they without the caring for the loss and the profit go on moving further and further.

ਖਾਣਿ ਉਖਣਿ ਕਢਿ ਆਣਦੇ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ ਹੀਰਾ ।

By digging into the mine, the diamond is brought out.
ਜਉਹਰੀਆ ਹਥਿ ਆਵਦਾ ਉਇ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ।
जउहरीआ हथि आवदा उइ गहिर गंभीरा ।
jauhareea hath aavadaa ue gahir ganbheeraa |
Then it goes into the hands of serene and great jewelers.
ਮਜਲਸ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਵਜੀਰਾ ।
मजलस अंदरि देखदे पातिसाह वजीरा ।
majalas andar dekhade paatisaah vajeeraa |
In the gatherings, the kings and the ministers test and check it.
ਮੁਲੁ ਕਰਨਿ ਅਜਮਾਇ ਕੈ ਸਾਹਾ ਮਨ ਧੀਰਾ ।
मुलु करनि अजमाइ कै साहा मन धीरा ।
mul karan ajamaae kai saahaa man dheeraa |
The bankers in full confidence evaluate it.
ਅਹਰਣਿ ਉਤੈ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਘਣ ਘਾਉ ਸਰੀਰਾ ।
अहरणि उतै रखि कै घण घाउ सरीरा ।
aharan utai rakh kai ghan ghaau sareeraa |
Putting it on the anvil, by the strokes of hammers, its body is tried for wounds.
ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਠਹਿਰਾਵਦਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰਾ ।੧੬।
विरला ही ठहिरावदा दरगह गुर पीरा ।१६।
viralaa hee tthahiraavadaa daragah gur peeraa |16|
Any rare one remains intact. Likewise, any rare one reaches the court of the Guru (God) i.e. any rare one escapes the darkness of maya and its infatuations.

ਤਰਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਡੁਬਾ ਤਰੈ ਪੀ ਪਿਰਮ ਪਿਆਲਾ ।
तरि डुबै डुबा तरै पी पिरम पिआला ।
tar ddubai ddubaa tarai pee piram piaalaa |
One who quaffs the cup of love, superficially drowns himself, but in fact, getting inebriated, one who drowns in it, swims it and gets across.
ਜਿਣਿ ਹਾਰੈ ਹਾਰੈ ਜਿਣੈ ਏਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚਾਲਾ ।
जिणि हारै हारै जिणै एहु गुरमुखि चाला ।
jin haarai haarai jinai ehu guramukh chaalaa |
This is the way of the gurmukhs, that they lose while winning and losing everything they win one and all.
ਮਾਰਗੁ ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਹੈ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਰਨਾਲਾ ।
मारगु खंडे धार है भवजलु भरनाला ।
maarag khandde dhaar hai bhavajal bharanaalaa |
The way into the world ocean is like a double-edged sword, is like a killing stone.
ਵਾਲਹੁ ਨਿਕਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਪੰਥੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ।
वालहु निका आखीऐ गुर पंथु निराला ।
vaalahu nikaa aakheeai gur panth niraalaa |
Thinner than a hair, the Guru panth (way of the Guru) is very sublime.
ਹਉਮੈ ਬਜਰੁ ਭਾਰ ਹੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਰਾਲਾ ।
हउमै बजरु भार है दुरमति दुराला ।
haumai bajar bhaar hai duramat duraalaa |
The disciple of the Guru loses his ego through the Gurmat, which perishes everything, and the ill-advised intellect is the abode of evil deeds.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਕੈ ਸਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ ਸੁਖਾਲਾ ।੧੭।
गुरमति आपु गवाइ कै सिखु जाइ सुखाला ।१७।
guramat aap gavaae kai sikh jaae sukhaalaa |17|
Following the wisdom of the Guru (Gurmat) and getting rid of ego, the Sikh goes across this world ocean.

धरति वड़ै वड़ि बीउ होइ जड़ अंदरि जंमै ।
dharat varrai varr beeo hoe jarr andar jamai |
The seed enters the earth and settles in the form of root.
ਹੋਇ ਬਰੂਟਾ ਚੁਹਚੁਹਾ ਮੂਲ ਡਾਲ ਧਰੰਮੈ ।
होइ बरूटा चुहचुहा मूल डाल धरंमै ।
hoe baroottaa chuhachuhaa mool ddaal dharamai |
Then, in the form of verdant plant, it becomes stem and branches.
ਬਿਰਖ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਬਿਥਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਬਹੁ ਜਟਾ ਪਲੰਮੈ ।
बिरख अकारु बिथारु करि बहु जटा पलंमै ।
birakh akaar bithaar kar bahu jattaa palamai |
Becoming tree, it extends further, and tangled branches hang from it.
ਜਟਾ ਲਟਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਧਰਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਇ ਮੂਲ ਅਗੰਮੈ ।
जटा लटा मिलि धरति विचि होइ मूल अगंमै ।
jattaa lattaa mil dharat vich hoe mool agamai |
These flourishing branches ultimately entering the earth again, attain the form of roots.
ਛਾਂਵ ਘਣੀ ਪਤ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਫਲ ਲੱਖ ਲਖੰਮੈ ।
छांव घणी पत सोहणे फल लक्ख लखंमै ।
chhaanv ghanee pat sohane fal lakh lakhamai |
Now its shade becomes think and leaves appear beautiful, and lakhs of fruits grow on it.
ਫਲ ਫਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬੀਅ ਬਹੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮਰੰਮੈ ।੧੮।
फल फल अंदरि बीअ बहु गुरसिख मरंमै ।१८।

In each fruit remain many seeds (and this process goes on). The mystery of the Sikhs of the Guru (Gursikhs) is the same; they also like banyan tree go on spreading the name of the Lord.

ਇਕੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੁ ਪੰਜੀਂ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ।

eik sikh due saadh sang panjeen paramesar |
One is a Sikh, two the congregation and in five resides God.
ਨਉ ਅੰਗ ਨੀਲ ਅਨੀਲ ਸੁੰਨ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਮਹੇਸਰੁ ।
नउ अंग नील अनील सुंन अवतार महेसरु ।
nau ang neel aneel sun avataar mahesar |
As cyphers added to one make the infinite number, likewise, getting attached with Sunya (God), the creatures also transform into great men and kings of the earth.
ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ ਅਸੰਖ ਸੰਖ ਮੁਕਤੈ ਮੁਕਤੇਸਰੁ ।
वीह इकीह असंख संख मुकतै मुकतेसरु ।
veeh ikeeh asankh sankh mukatai mukatesar |
In this way, innumerable small and big persons also become liberated and liberators.
ਨਗਰਿ ਨਗਰਿ ਮੈ ਸਹੰਸ ਸਿਖ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਲਖੇਸਰੁ ।
नगरि नगरि मै सहंस सिख देस देस लखेसरु ।
nagar nagar mai sahans sikh des des lakhesar |
In town after town and country after country are thousands of Sikhs.
ਇਕ ਦੂੰ ਬਿਰਖਹੁ ਲਖ ਫਲ ਫਲ ਬੀਅ ਲੋਮੇਸਰੁ ।
इक दूं बिरखहु लख फल फल बीअ लोमेसरु ।
eik doon birakhahu lakh fal fal beea lomesar |
As lakhs of fruits are obtained from a tree and in those fruits, remain lakhs of seeds. (In fact the Sikhs are the fruits of the Guru-tree and in those fruits, the Guru resides in the form of seeds).
ਭੋਗ ਭੁਗਤਿ ਰਾਜੇਸੁਰਾ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜੋਗੇਸਰੁ ।੧੯।
भोग भुगति राजेसुरा जोग जुगति जोगेसरु ।१९।
bhog bhugat raajesuraa jog jugat jogesar |19|
These disciples of the Guru, being enjoyers of delights, are the emperors of the kings, and being knower of the technique of yoga, are kings of yogis.

The love between the disciples and the Guru is the same as is there between a trader and a banker.
ਸਉਦਾ ਇਕਤੁ ਹਟਿ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੈ ।
सउदा इकतु हटि है संसारु विसाहै ।
saudaa ikat hatt hai sansaar visaahai |
The merchandise of the name of the Lord is available only at one shop (of the Guru) and the whole world purchases from there only.
ਕੋਈ ਵੇਚੈ ਕਉਡੀਆ ਕੋ ਦਮ ਉਗਾਹੈ ।
कोई वेचै कउडीआ को दम उगाहै ।
koee vechai kauddeea ko dam ugaahai |
Some of the worldly shopkeepers are selling trash whereas others are collecting money.
ਕੋਈ ਰੁਪਯੇ ਵਿਕਣੈ ਸੁਨਈਏ ਕੋ ਡਾਹੈ ।
कोई रुपये विकणै सुनईए को डाहै ।
koee rupaye vikanai suneee ko ddaahai |
Some are storing the gold coins after spending rupees.
ਕੋਈ ਰਤਨ ਵਣੰਜਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹੈ ।
कोई रतन वणंजदा करि सिफति सलाहै ।
koee ratan vananjadaa kar sifat salaahai |
And there are some that are dealing in jewels of the eulogization of the Lord.
ਵਣਜਿ ਸੁਪਤਾ ਸਾਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ਨਿਬਾਹੈ ।੨੦।
वणजि सुपता साह नालि वेसाहु निबाहै ।२०।
vanaj supataa saah naal vesaahu nibaahai |20|
Any rare honorable banker having full faith in the Lord maintains this trade.

The perfect true Guru keeps the actual merchandise (of the name of the Lord).
ਅਉਗੁਣ ਲੈ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਕਣੈ ਵਚਨੈ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਾ ।
अउगुण लै गुण विकणै वचनै दा सूरा ।
aaugun lai gun vikanai vachanai daa sooraa |
He is that brave person who accepts the evils and upkeeps his reputation of being giver of virtues.
ਸਫਲੁ ਕਰੈ ਸਿੰਮਲੁ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਸੋਵਰਨੁ ਮਨੂਰਾ ।
सफलु करै सिंमलु बिरखु सोवरनु मनूरा ।
safal karai sinmal birakh sovaran manooraa |

जिउ तारे दिह उगवै आन्हेर गवाई ।
jiau taare dih ugavai aanher gavaaee |
But as the darkness and the stars elope when the sun rises, likewise by losing all the objects mentioned above and by becoming the dear friend of the Guru.

His unmanifest position is unknowable and His form and guise is formless.
ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਅਜਪਾ ਜਪਣੁ ਨੇਤਿ ਨੇਤਿ ਵਖਾਣਾ ।
अकथ कथा अजपा जपणु नेति नेति वखाणा ।
akath kathaa ajapaa japan net net vakhaanaa |
His tale is ineffable; unrecited recitations are performed for Him but even He is described as neti neti (not this, not that).
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਦੇਸੁ ਹੈ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕੁਰਬਾਣਾ ।੨੪।
