ਧ੍ਰੂ ਹਸਦਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਪਿਉ ਕੁਛੜਿ ਲੀਤਾ ।

ध्रू हसदा घरि आइआ करि पिआरु पिउ कुछड़ि लीता ।

dhraoo hasadaa ghar aaeaa kar piaar piau kuchharr leetaa |

Boy Dhru came smiling to his house (palace) and his father full of love put him into his lap.


ਬਾਹਹੁ ਪਕੜਿ ਉਠਾਲਿਆ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਰੋਸੁ ਮਤ੍ਰੇਈ ਕੀਤਾ ।

बाहहु पकड़ि उठालिआ मन विचि रोसु मत्रेई कीता ।

baahahu pakarr utthaaliaa man vich ros matreee keetaa |

Seeing this, the stepmother got angry and catching hold of his arm pushed him out of the lap of the father (the king).


ਡੁਡਹੁਲਿਕਾ ਮਾਂ ਪੁਛੈ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਵਾਣੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸੁਰੀਤਾ ।

डुडहुलिका मां पुछै तूं सावाणी है कि सुरीता ।

dduddahulikaa maan puchhai toon saavaanee hai ki sureetaa |

Tearful with fear he asked his mother whether she was a queen or a maidservant?


ਸਾਵਾਣੀ ਹਾਂ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹੀਤਾ ।

सावाणी हां जनम दी नामु न भगती करमि द्रिढ़ीता ।

saavaanee haan janam dee naam na bhagatee karam drirrheetaa |

O son! (said she) I was born queen but I did not remember God and did not undertake acts of devotion (and this is the reason of yours and mine plight).


ਕਿਸੁ ਉਦਮ ਤੇ ਰਾਜੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤ੍ਰੂ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਹੋਵਨਿ ਮੀਤਾ ।

किसु उदम ते राजु मिलि सत्रू ते सभि होवनि मीता ।

kis udam te raaj mil satraoo te sabh hovan meetaa |

With that effort can the kingdom be had (asked Dhru) and how can enemies turn friends?


ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਜਿਦੂ ਹੋਈਐ ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤਾ ।

परमेसरु आराधीऐ जिदू होईऐ पतित पुनीता ।

paramesar aaraadheeai jidoo hoeeai patit puneetaa |

The Lord should be worshipped and thus the sinners also become sacred ones (said the mother).


ਬਾਹਰਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਰਣਿ ਤਪੁ ਮਨ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਹੋਇ ਅਤੀਤਾ ।

बाहरि चलिआ करणि तपु मन बैरागी होइ अतीता ।

baahar chaliaa karan tap man bairaagee hoe ateetaa |

Listening to this and getting totally detached in his mind Dhru went out (to the jungle) to undertake rigorous discipline.


ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ ਨਾਉ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਮਿਓ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਾ ।

नारद मुनि उपदेसिआ नाउ निधानु अमिओ रसु पीता ।

naarad mun upadesiaa naau nidhaan amio ras peetaa |

On the way, sage Narad taught him the technique of devotion and Dhru quaffed the nectar from the ocean of the Name of the Lord.


ਪਿਛਹੁ ਰਾਜੇ ਸਦਿਆ ਅਬਿਚਲੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਤਾ ।

पिछहु राजे सदिआ अबिचलु राजु करहु नित नीता ।

pichhahu raaje sadiaa abichal raaj karahu nit neetaa |

(After some time) King (Uttanpad) called him back and asked him (Dhru) to rule forever.


ਹਾਰਿ ਚਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਗ ਜੀਤਾ ।੧।

हारि चले गुरमुखि जग जीता ।१।

haar chale guramukh jag jeetaa |1|

The gurmukhs who seem to be losing i.e. who turn their faces from the evil propensities, conquer the world.

ਘਰਿ ਹਰਣਾਖਸ ਦੈਤ ਦੇ ਕਲਰਿ ਕਵਲੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ।

घरि हरणाखस दैत दे कलरि कवलु भगतु प्रहिलादु ।

ghar haranaakhas dait de kalar kaval bhagat prahilaad |

Prahlad, the saint, was born in the house of demon (king) Haranakhas like a lotus is born in the alkaline (barren) land.


ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਚਾਟਸਾਲ ਪਾਂਧੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਹੋਆ ਅਹਿਲਾਦੁ ।

पढ़न पठाइआ चाटसाल पांधे चिति होआ अहिलादु ।

parrhan patthaaeaa chaattasaal paandhe chit hoaa ahilaad |

When he was sent to seminary, the brahmin purohit became elated (because the king’s son was now his disciple).


ਸਿਮਰੈ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਨਾਦੁ ।

सिमरै मन विचि राम नाम गावै सबदु अनाहदु नादु ।

simarai man vich raam naam gaavai sabad anaahad naad |

Prahlad would remember the name of Ram in his heart and outwardly also he would eulogise the Lord.


ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਭ ਚਾਟੜੈ ਪਾਂਧੇ ਹੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ।

भगति करनि सभ चाटड़ै पांधे होइ रहे विसमादु ।

bhagat karan sabh chaattarrai paandhe hoe rahe visamaad |

Now all the disciples became devotees of Lord, which was an awful and embarrassing situation for all the teachers.


ਰਾਜੇ ਪਾਸਿ ਰੂਆਇਆ ਦੋਖੀ ਦੈਤਿ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਵਾਦੁ ।

राजे पासि रूआइआ दोखी दैति वधाइआ वादु ।

raaje paas rooaaeaa dokhee dait vadhaaeaa vaad |

The priest (teacher) reported or complained to the king (that O king your son has become devotee of God).


ਜਲ ਅਗਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਘਤਿਆ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਡੁਬੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ।

जल अगनी विचि घतिआ जलै न डुबै गुर परसादि ।

jal aganee vich ghatiaa jalai na ddubai gur parasaad |

The malevolent demon picked up the quarrel. Prahlad was thrown into fire and water but with the grace of Guru (the Lord) neither he was burnt nor drowned.


ਕਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਸਦਿ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਉਸਤਾਦੁ ।

कढि खड़गु सदि पुछिआ कउणु सु तेरा है उसतादु ।

kadt kharrag sad puchhiaa kaun su teraa hai usataad |

Angered as he was, Hiranyaksyapu took out his double-edged sword and asked Prahlad who his Guru (Lord) was.


ਥੰਮ੍ਹੁ ਪਾੜਿ ਪਰਗਟਿਆ ਨਰਸਿੰਘ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਨਾਦਿ ।

थंम्हु पाड़ि परगटिआ नरसिंघ रूप अनूप अनादि ।

thamhu paarr paragattiaa narasingh roop anoop anaad |

At the same moment Lord God in the form of man-lion came out of pillar. His form was grand and majestic.


ਬੇਮੁਖ ਪਕੜਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਅਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ।

बेमुख पकड़ि पछाड़िअनु संत सहाई आदि जुगादि ।

bemukh pakarr pachhaarrian sant sahaaee aad jugaad |

That wicked demon was thrown down and killed and thus it was proved that the Lord is kind to devotees since the time immemorial.


ਜੈ ਜੈਕਾਰ ਕਰਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿ ।੨।

जै जैकार करनि ब्रहमादि ।२।

jai jaikaar karan brahamaad |2|

Seeing this Brahma and other gods started eulogising the Lord.

ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬੈਠਾ ਜਗਿ ਕਰਾਵੈ ।

बलि राजा घरि आपणै अंदरि बैठा जगि करावै ।

bal raajaa ghar aapanai andar baitthaa jag karaavai |

Bali, the king, was busy in performing a yajna in his palace.


ਬਾਵਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਆਇਆ ਚਾਰਿ ਵੇਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਠ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ।

बावन रूपी आइआ चारि वेद मुखि पाठ सुणावै ।

baavan roopee aaeaa chaar ved mukh paatth sunaavai |

A low stature dwarf in the form of brahmin came there reciting all the four Vedas.


ਰਾਜੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਦਿਆ ਮੰਗੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ।

राजे अंदरि सदिआ मंगु सुआमी जो तुधु भावै ।

raaje andar sadiaa mang suaamee jo tudh bhaavai |

The king after calling him in asked him to demand anything he liked.


ਅਛਲੁ ਛਲਣਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਇਆ ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਪੁਰੋਹਿਤੁ ਕਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ।

अछलु छलणि तुधु आइआ सुक्र पुरोहितु कहि समझावै ।

achhal chhalan tudh aaeaa sukr purohit keh samajhaavai |

Immediately priest Sukracharya made the king (Bali) understand that he (the beggar) is undeceivable God and He had came to delude him.


ਕਰੌ ਅਢਾਈ ਧਰਤਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਲੋਅ ਨ ਮਾਵੈ ।

करौ अढाई धरति मंगि पिछहु दे त्रिहु लोअ न मावै ।

karau adtaaee dharat mang pichhahu de trihu loa na maavai |

The dwarf demanded two and half steps length of earth (which was granted by the king).


ਦੁਇ ਕਰਵਾਂ ਕਰਿ ਤਿੰਨ ਲੋਅ ਬਲਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੈ ਮਗਰੁ ਮਿਣਾਵੈ ।

दुइ करवां करि तिंन लोअ बलि राजा लै मगरु मिणावै ।

due karavaan kar tin loa bal raajaa lai magar minaavai |

Then the dwarf expanded his body so much that now the three worlds were insufficient for him.


ਬਲਿ ਛਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਛਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

बलि छलि आपु छलाइअनु होइ दइआलु मिलै गलि लावै ।

bal chhal aap chhalaaeian hoe deaal milai gal laavai |

Even knowing this deception Bali allowed himself to be deceived so, and seeing this Vishnu embraced him.


ਦਿਤਾ ਰਾਜੁ ਪਤਾਲ ਦਾ ਹੋਇ ਅਧੀਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ।

दिता राजु पताल दा होइ अधीनु भगति जसु गावै ।

ditaa raaj pataal daa hoe adheen bhagat jas gaavai |

When he covered the three worlds in two steps, for third half-step king Bali offered his own back.


ਹੋਇ ਦਰਵਾਨ ਮਹਾਂ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ।੩।

होइ दरवान महां सुखु पावै ।३।

hoe daravaan mahaan sukh paavai |3|

Bali was given the kingdom of the netherworld where surrendering to God he engaged himself in the loving devotion of the Lord. Vishnu was delighted to be the doorkeeper of Bali.

ਅੰਬਰੀਕ ਮੁਹਿ ਵਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਰਾਤਿ ਪਈ ਦੁਰਬਾਸਾ ਆਇਆ ।

अंबरीक मुहि वरतु है राति पई दुरबासा आइआ ।

anbareek muhi varat hai raat pee durabaasaa aaeaa |

One evening while king Ambaris was fasting he was visited by sage Durvasa


ਭੀੜਾ ਓਸੁ ਉਪਾਰਣਾ ਓਹੁ ਉਠਿ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਣਿ ਨਦੀ ਸਿਧਾਇਆ ।

भीड़ा ओसु उपारणा ओहु उठि न्हावणि नदी सिधाइआ ।

bheerraa os upaaranaa ohu utth nhaavan nadee sidhaaeaa |

The king was to break his fast while serving Durvasa but the rishi went to the riverbank to take a bath.


ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਪੋਖਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਸਰਾਪੁ ਦੇਣ ਨੋ ਧਾਇਆ ।

चरणोदकु लै पोखिआ ओहु सरापु देण नो धाइआ ।

charanodak lai pokhiaa ohu saraap den no dhaaeaa |

Fearing the change of date (which would deem his fast fruitless), the king broke his fast by drinking the water which he had poured on the feet of the rishi. When the rishi realised that the king had not served him first, he ran to curse the king.


ਚਕ੍ਰ ਸੁਦਰਸਨੁ ਕਾਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਇ ਭੀਹਾਵਲੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ।

चक्र सुदरसनु काल रूप होइ भीहावलु गरबु गवाइआ ।

chakr sudarasan kaal roop hoe bheehaaval garab gavaaeaa |

On this, Vishnu ordered his death like disc to move towards Durvasa and thus the ego of Durvasa was removed.


ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੁ ਭੰਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਲੈ ਰਖਿ ਨ ਹੰਘਨਿ ਦੇਵ ਸਬਾਇਆ ।

बाम्हणु भंना जीउ लै रखि न हंघनि देव सबाइआ ।

baamhan bhanaa jeeo lai rakh na hanghan dev sabaaeaa |

Now Brahmin Durvasa ran for his life. Even the gods and deities could not afford him shelter.


ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕੁ ਸਿਵ ਲੋਕੁ ਤਜਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲੋਕੁ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਤਜਾਇਆ ।

इंद्र लोकु सिव लोकु तजि ब्रहम लोकु बैकुंठ तजाइआ ।

eindr lok siv lok taj braham lok baikuntth tajaaeaa |

He was avoided in the abodes of Indra, Siva, Brahma and the heavens.


ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ਸਣੁ ਸਿਖਿ ਦੇਇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ।

देवतिआं भगवानु सणु सिखि देइ सभनां समझाइआ ।

devatiaan bhagavaan san sikh dee sabhanaan samajhaaeaa |

Gods and God made him understand (that none except Ambaris could save him).


ਆਇ ਪਇਆ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਮਾਰੀਦਾ ਅੰਬਰੀਕ ਛੁਡਾਇਆ ।

आइ पइआ सरणागती मारीदा अंबरीक छुडाइआ ।

aae peaa saranaagatee maareedaa anbareek chhuddaaeaa |

Then he surrendered before Ambaris and Ambaris saved the dying sage.


ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਜਗਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਸਦਾਇਆ ।੪।

भगति वछलु जगि बिरदु सदाइआ ।४।

bhagat vachhal jag birad sadaaeaa |4|

The Lord God came to be known in the world as benevolent to devotees.


ਪਉੜੀ ੫

ਭਗਤੁ ਵਡਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਕੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ ।

भगतु वडा राजा जनकु है गुरमुखि माइआ विचि उदासी ।

bhagat vaddaa raajaa janak hai guramukh maaeaa vich udaasee |

King Janak was a great saint who amidst maya remained indifferent to it.


ਦੇਵ ਲੋਕ ਨੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬੁ ਸਭਾ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ।

देव लोक नो चलिआ गण गंधरबु सभा सुखवासी ।

dev lok no chaliaa gan gandharab sabhaa sukhavaasee |

Along with gans and gandharvs (calestial musicians) he went to the abode of the gods.


ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਸੁਣਿ ਵਿਲਲਾਵਨਿ ਜੀਅ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ।

जमपुरि गइआ पुकार सुणि विललावनि जीअ नरक निवासी ।

jamapur geaa pukaar sun vilalaavan jeea narak nivaasee |

From there, he, hearing the cries of inhabitants of hell, went to them.


ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ਨੋ ਆਖਿਓਨੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਦੀ ਕਰਿ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ ।

धरमराइ नो आखिओनु सभना दी करि बंद खलासी ।

dharamaraae no aakhion sabhanaa dee kar band khalaasee |

He asked the god of death, Dharamrai, to relieve all their suffering.


ਕਰੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ਹਉ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ।

करे बेनती धरमराइ हउ सेवकु ठाकुरु अबिनासी ।

kare benatee dharamaraae hau sevak tthaakur abinaasee |

Hearing this, the god of death told him he was a mere servant of the eternal Lord (and without His orders he could not liberate them).


ਗਹਿਣੇ ਧਰਿਓਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਪਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਰਜਾਸੀ ।

गहिणे धरिओनु इकु नाउ पापा नालि करै निरजासी ।

gahine dharion ik naau paapaa naal karai nirajaasee |

Janak offered a part of his devotion and remembrance of the name of the Lord.


ਪਾਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਉ ਅਤੁਲ ਨ ਤੁਲਾਸੀ ।

पासंगि पापु न पुजनी गुरमुखि नाउ अतुल न तुलासी ।

paasang paap na pujanee guramukh naau atul na tulaasee |

All the sins of hell were found not equal even to the counterweight of balance.


ਨਰਕਹੁ ਛੁਟੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਕਟੀ ਗਲਹੁੰ ਸਿਲਕ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ।

नरकहु छुटे जीअ जंत कटी गलहुं सिलक जम फासी ।

narakahu chhutte jeea jant kattee galahun silak jam faasee |

In fact no balance can weigh the fruits of recitation and remembrance of the Lords name by the gurmukh.


ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੀ ਦਾਸੀ ।੫।

मुकति जुगति नावै दी दासी ।५।

mukat jugat naavai dee daasee |5|

All the creatures got liberated from hell and the noose of death was cut. Liberation and the technique of attaining it are the servants of the name of the Lord.

ਸੁਖੁ ਰਾਜੇ ਹਰੀਚੰਦ ਘਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁ ਤਾਰਾ ਲੋਚਨ ਰਾਣੀ ।

सुखु राजे हरीचंद घरि नारि सु तारा लोचन राणी ।

sukh raaje hareechand ghar naar su taaraa lochan raanee |

King HariChand had a queen with beautiful eyes, Tara, who had made his home the abode of comforts.


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਾਇ ਸੁਣੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ।

साधसंगति मिलि गावदे राती जाइ सुणै गुरबाणी ।

saadhasangat mil gaavade raatee jaae sunai gurabaanee |

At night she would go to the place where in the form of holy congregation, would recite the holy hymns.


ਪਿਛੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਅਧੀ ਰਾਤਿ ਨਿਖੰਡਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ।

पिछै राजा जागिआ अधी राति निखंडि विहाणी ।

pichhai raajaa jaagiaa adhee raat nikhandd vihaanee |

After she had left, the King awoke in the middle of the night and realised she had gone.


ਰਾਣੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤਿ ਗਈ ਹੈਰਾਣੀ ।

राणी दिसि न आवई मन विचि वरति गई हैराणी ।

raanee dis na aavee man vich varat gee hairaanee |

He could not find the Queen anywhere and his heart filled with astonishment


ਹੋਰਤੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਉਠਿ ਕੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਪਿਛੈ ਤਰਲ ਜੁਆਣੀ ।

होरतु राती उठि कै चलिआ पिछै तरल जुआणी ।

horat raatee utth kai chaliaa pichhai taral juaanee |

The following night he followed the young queen.


ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹੁਤੀ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਖੜੀ ਖੜਾਉ ਨੀਸਾਣੀ ।

राणी पहुती संगती राजे खड़ी खड़ाउ नीसाणी ।

raanee pahutee sangatee raaje kharree kharraau neesaanee |

The queen reached the holy congregation and the King lifted one of her sandals from there (so that he could prove the infidelity of the queen).


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਜੋੜੀ ਜੁੜੀ ਖੜਾਉ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ।

When about to go, the queen concentrated upon the holy congregation and the one sandal became a pair.


ਰਾਜੇ ਡਿਠਾ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਇਹੁ ਏਹ ਖੜਾਵ ਹੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ।

राजे डिठा चलितु इहु एह खड़ाव है चोज विडाणी ।

raaje dditthaa chalit ihu eeh kharraav hai choj viddaanee |

The king upheld this feat and realized that there her matching sandal was a miracle.

ਆਇਆ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਬਿਦਰ ਦੇ ਬੋਲੈ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਰੁਖਾ ।

आइआ सुणिआ बिदर दे बोलै दुरजोधनु होइ रुखा ।

aaeaa suniaa bidar de bolai durajodhan hoe rukhaa |

Hearing that Lord Krishan was served and stayed over at humble Bidar's home, Duryodhan remarked sarcastically.


ਘਰਿ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਛਡਿ ਕੈ ਗੋਲੇ ਦੇ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਿ ਸੁਖਾ ।

घरि असाडे छडि कै गोले दे घरि जाहि कि सुखा ।

ghar asaadde chhadd kai gole de ghar jaeh ki sukhaa |

Leaving our grand palaces, how much happiness and comfort did you attain in the home of a servant?


ਭੀਖਮੁ ਦੋਣਾ ਕਰਣ ਤਜਿ ਸਭਾ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਵਡੇ ਮਾਨੁਖਾ ।

भीखमु दोणा करण तजि सभा सीगार वडे मानुखा ।

bheekham donaa karan taj sabhaa seegaar vadde maanukhaa |

You gave up even Bhikhaum, Dohna and Karan who are recognised as great men who are adorned in all courts.


ਝੁੰਗੀ ਜਾਇ ਵਲਾਇਓਨੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਦੇ ਜੀਅ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧੁਖਾ ।

झुंगी जाइ वलाइओनु सभना दे जीअ अंदरि धुखा ।

jhungee jaae valaaeon sabhanaa de jeea andar dhukhaa |

We have all been anguished to find that you have lived in a hut”.


ਹਸਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਜੀ ਸੁਣਿਹੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਸਨਮੁਖਾ ।

हसि बोले भगवान जी सुणिहो राजा होइ सनमुखा ।

has bole bhagavaan jee suniho raajaa hoe sanamukhaa |

Then smilingly, Lord Krishan asked the King to come forward and to listen carefully.


ਤੇਰੇ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਦਿਸਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਪਦਾ ਦੁਖਾ ।

तेरे भाउ न दिसई मेरे नाही अपदा दुखा ।

tere bhaau na disee mere naahee apadaa dukhaa |

I see no love and devotion in you (and hence I have not come to you).


ਭਾਉ ਜਿਵੇਹਾ ਬਿਦਰ ਦੇ ਹੋਰੀ ਦੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਚਾਉ ਨ ਚੁਖਾ ।

भाउ जिवेहा बिदर दे होरी दे चिति चाउ न चुखा ।

bhaau jivehaa bidar de horee de chit chaau na chukhaa |

No heart I see has even a fraction of the love that Bidar bears in his heart.


ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਾ ਭੁਖਾ ।੭।

गोबिंद भाउ भगति दा भुखा ।७।

gobind bhaau bhagat daa bhukhaa |7|

The Lord needs loving devotion and nothing else.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭਾ ਦੁਸਾਸਣੈ ਮਥੇਵਾਲਿ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਆਂਦੀ ।

अंदरि सभा दुसासणै मथेवालि द्रोपती आंदी ।

andar sabhaa dusaasanai mathevaal dropatee aandee |

Dragging Daropati by the hair, Dusasanai brought her into the assembly.


ਦੂਤਾ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਨੰਗੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਪੰਚਾਲੀ ਬਾਂਦੀ ।

दूता नो फुरमाइआ नंगी करहु पंचाली बांदी ।

dootaa no furamaaeaa nangee karahu panchaalee baandee |

He commanded his men to strip the maidservant Dropati stark naked.


ਪੰਜੇ ਪਾਂਡੋ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਅਉਘਟਿ ਰੁਧੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਦੀ ।

पंजे पांडो वेखदे अउघटि रुधी नारि जिना दी ।

panje paanddo vekhade aaughatt rudhee naar jinaa dee |

All the five Pandavs who she was the wife of, beheld this.


ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿ ਹਾ ਹਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਂਦੀ ।

अखी मीट धिआनु धरि हा हा क्रिसन करै बिललांदी ।

akhee meett dhiaan dhar haa haa krisan karai bilalaandee |

Crying, totally dejected and helpless, she closed her eyes. Single-mindedly she invoked Krishna for help.


ਕਪੜ ਕੋਟੁ ਉਸਾਰਿਓਨੁ ਥਕੇ ਦੂਤ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਂਦੀ ।

कपड़ कोटु उसारिओनु थके दूत न पारि वसांदी ।

kaparr kott usaarion thake doot na paar vasaandee |

The servants were taking off the clothes from her body but more layers of clothes formed a fort around her; the servants got tired but the layers of clothes were never ending.


ਹਥ ਮਰੋੜਨਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਧੁਣਨਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਨਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।

हथ मरोड़नि सिरु धुणनि पछोतानि करनि जाहि जांदी ।

hath marorran sir dhunan pachhotaan karan jaeh jaandee |

The servants were now writhing and frustrated on their abortive attempt and felt that they themselves were ashamed.


ਘਰਿ ਆਈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਪੈਜ ਰਹੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਰਮਾਂਦੀ ।

घरि आई ठाकुर मिले पैज रही बोले सरमांदी ।

ghar aaee tthaakur mile paij rahee bole saramaandee |

On reaching home, Dropati was asked by Lord Krishna whether she was saved in the assembly.


ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥਾਂ ਬਾਣਿ ਧੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ।੮।

नाथ अनाथां बाणि धुरां दी ।८।

naath anaathaan baan dhuraan dee |8|

She shyly replied, “Since perennial times you are living up to your reputation of being father of the fatherless ones.”

ਬਿਪੁ ਸੁਦਾਮਾ ਦਾਲਿਦੀ ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਦਾਏ ।

बिपु सुदामा दालिदी बाल सखाई मित्र सदाए ।

bip sudaamaa daalidee baal sakhaaee mitr sadaae |

Sudama, a poor brahman, was known to be a friend of Krishna from childhood.


ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਦਲਿਦ੍ਰ ਗਵਾਏ ।

लागू होई बाम्हणी मिलि जगदीस दलिद्र गवाए ।

laagoo hoee baamhanee mil jagadees dalidr gavaae |

His brahmin wife always pestered him as to why he did not go to Lord Krishna to alleviate his poverty.


ਚਲਿਆ ਗਣਦਾ ਗਟੀਆਂ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਕਉਣੁ ਮਿਲਾਏ ।

चलिआ गणदा गटीआं किउ करि जाईऐ कउणु मिलाए ।

chaliaa ganadaa gatteean kiau kar jaaeeai kaun milaae |

He was perplexed and pondered over how he could get re-introduced to Krishna, who could help him meet the Lord.


ਪਹੁਤਾ ਨਗਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਕਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਜਾਏ ।

पहुता नगरि दुआरका सिंघ दुआरि खलोता जाए ।

pahutaa nagar duaarakaa singh duaar khalotaa jaae |

He reached the town of Duaraka and stood before the main gate (of the palace of Krishna).


ਦੂਰਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡੰਡਉਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਛਡਿ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਆਏ ।

दूरहु देखि डंडउति करि छडि सिंघासणु हरि जी आए ।

doorahu dekh ddanddaut kar chhadd singhaasan har jee aae |

Seeing him from a distance, Krishna, the Lord, bowed and leaving his throne came to Sudama.


ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਰਦਖਣਾ ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਏ ।

पहिले दे परदखणा पैरी पै के लै गलि लाए ।

pahile de paradakhanaa pairee pai ke lai gal laae |

First he circumambulated around Sudama and then touching his feet he embraced him.


ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਪੈਰ ਧੋਇ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣੁ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠਾਏ ।

चरणोदकु लै पैर धोइ सिंघासणु उते बैठाए ।

charanodak lai pair dhoe singhaasan ute baitthaae |

Washing his feet he took that water and made Sudama sit on the throne.


ਪੁਛੇ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਏ ।

पुछे कुसलु पिआरु करि गुर सेवा दी कथा सुणाए ।

puchhe kusal piaar kar gur sevaa dee kathaa sunaae |

Then Krishna lovingly enquired about his welfare and talked about the time when they were together in the service of the guru (Sandipani).


ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੰਦੁਲ ਚਬਿਓਨੁ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਅਗੈ ਪਹੁਚਾਏ ।

लै के तंदुल चबिओनु विदा करे अगै पहुचाए ।

lai ke tandul chabion vidaa kare agai pahuchaae |

Krishna asked for the rice sent by Sudama’s wife and after eating, came out to see off his friend Sudama.


ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਕੁਚਿ ਪਠਾਏ ।੯।

चारि पदारथ सकुचि पठाए ।९।

chaar padaarath sakuch patthaae |9|

Though all the four boons (righteousness,wealth,fulfillment of desire and libereation) were given to Sudama by Krishna, Krishna's humbleness still made him feel totally helpless.

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜੈਦੇਉ ਕਰਿ ਗੀਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਗਾਵੈ ।

प्रेम भगति जैदेउ करि गीत गोविंद सहज धुनि गावै ।

prem bhagat jaideo kar geet govind sehaj dhun gaavai |

Getting immersed in the loving devotion, the devotee Jaidev would sing the songs of the Lord (Govind).


ਲੀਲਾ ਚਲਿਤ ਵਖਾਣਦਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ।

लीला चलित वखाणदा अंतरजामी ठाकुर भावै ।

leelaa chalit vakhaanadaa antarajaamee tthaakur bhaavai |

He would describe the glorious feats accomplished by God and was greatly loved by him.


ਅਖਰੁ ਇਕੁ ਨ ਆਵੜੈ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਵੈ ।

अखरु इकु न आवड़ै पुसतक बंन्हि संधिआ करि आवै ।

akhar ik na aavarrai pusatak banh sandhiaa kar aavai |

He (Jaidev) knew no would and hence binding his book would return home in the evening.


ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਭਗਤ ਰੂਪਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਬਣਾਵੈ ।

गुण निधानु घरि आइ कै भगत रूपि लिखि लेखु बणावै ।

gun nidhaan ghar aae kai bhagat roop likh lekh banaavai |

God, the repository of all virtues in the form of the devotee Himself wrote all the songs for him.


ਅਖਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਨ ਅੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

अखर पढ़ि परतीति करि होइ विसमादु न अंगि समावै ।

akhar parrh parateet kar hoe visamaad na ang samaavai |

Jaidev would get elated seeing and reading those words.


ਵੇਖੈ ਜਾਇ ਉਜਾੜਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਇਕੁ ਆਚਰਜੁ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ।

वेखै जाइ उजाड़ि विचि बिरखु इकु आचरजु सुहावै ।

vekhai jaae ujaarr vich birakh ik aacharaj suhaavai |

Jaidev saw a wonderful tree in the deep forest.


ਗੀਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਸੰਪੂਰਣੋ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ।

गीत गोविंद संपूरणो पति पति लिखिआ अंतु न पावै ।

geet govind sanpoorano pat pat likhiaa ant na paavai |

Each and every leaf had the songs of the Lord Govind written on it. He could not understand this mystery.


ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

भगति हेति परगासु करि होइ दइआलु मिलै गलि लावै ।

bhagat het paragaas kar hoe deaal milai gal laavai |

Due to the love for the devotee, God embraced him in person.


ਸੰਤ ਅਨੰਤ ਨ ਭੇਦੁ ਗਣਾਵੈ ।੧੦।

संत अनंत न भेदु गणावै ।१०।

sant anant na bhed ganaavai |10|

God and saint have no veil in between.

ਕੰਮ ਕਿਤੇ ਪਿਉ ਚਲਿਆ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਨੋ ਆਖਿ ਸਿਧਾਇਆ ।

कंम किते पिउ चलिआ नामदेउ नो आखि सिधाइआ ।

kam kite piau chaliaa naamadeo no aakh sidhaaeaa |

Namdev's father was called to do some work so he called Naamdev.


ਠਾਕੁਰ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਦੁਧੁ ਪੀਆਵਣੁ ਕਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ।

ठाकुर दी सेवा करी दुधु पीआवणु कहि समझाइआ ।

tthaakur dee sevaa karee dudh peeaavan keh samajhaaeaa |

He told Namdev to serve Thakur, the Lord, with milk.


ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਪਲ ਗਾਇ ਦੁਹਿ ਕੈ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ।

नामदेउ इसनानु करि कपल गाइ दुहि कै लै आइआ ।

naamadeo isanaan kar kapal gaae duhi kai lai aaeaa |

After taking bath Namdev brought the milk of black-teat cow.


ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੋ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਾਲਿ ਕੈ ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ ।

ठाकुर नो न्हावालि कै चरणोदकु लै तिलकु चढ़ाइआ ।

tthaakur no nhaavaal kai charanodak lai tilak charrhaaeaa |

Having bathed the Thakur, he put the water used to wash the Thakur, on his own head.


ਹਥਿ ਜੋੜਿ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ਦੁਧੁ ਪੀਅਹੁ ਜੀ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਾਇਆ ।

हथि जोड़ि बिनती करै दुधु पीअहु जी गोबिंद राइआ ।

hath jorr binatee karai dudh peeahu jee gobind raaeaa |

Now with folded hands he requested the Lord to have milk.


ਨਿਹਚਉ ਕਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ।

निहचउ करि आराधिआ होइ दइआलु दरसु दिखलाइआ ।

nihchau kar aaraadhiaa hoe deaal daras dikhalaaeaa |

Becoming steadfast in his thoughts when he prayed, the Lord appeared before him in person.


ਭਰੀ ਕਟੋਰੀ ਨਾਮਦੇਵਿ ਲੈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੋ ਦੁਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ।

भरी कटोरी नामदेवि लै ठाकुर नो दुधु पीआइआ ।

bharee kattoree naamadev lai tthaakur no dudh peeaeaa |

Namdev made Lord drink the full bowl of milk.


ਗਾਇ ਮੁਈ ਜੀਵਾਲਿਓਨੁ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਦਾ ਛਪਰੁ ਛਾਇਆ ।

गाइ मुई जीवालिओनु नामदेव दा छपरु छाइआ ।

gaae muee jeevaalion naamadev daa chhapar chhaaeaa |

On another occasion God brought a dead cow to life and also thatched the hut of Namdev.


ਫੇਰਿ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਰਖਿਓਨੁ ਚਾਰਿ ਵਰਨ ਲੈ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਇਆ ।

फेरि देहुरा रखिओनु चारि वरन लै पैरी पाइआ ।

fer dehuraa rakhion chaar varan lai pairee paaeaa |

On yet another occasion, God rotated the temple (after Naamdev was not allowed entrance) and made all the four castes (varnas) bow at the feet of Namdev.


ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇਆ ।੧੧।

भगत जना दा करे कराइआ ।११।

bhagat janaa daa kare karaaeaa |11|

The Lord accomplishes whatever is done and desired by saints.

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਣ ਨਾਮਦੇਵ ਭਲਕੇ ਉਠਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਆਵੈ ।

दरसनु देखण नामदेव भलके उठि त्रिलोचनु आवै ।

darasan dekhan naamadev bhalake utth trilochan aavai |

Trilochan awoke early daily just to have sight of Namdev,


ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੁਇ ਜਣੇ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਰਿ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ।

भगति करनि मिलि दुइ जणे नामदेउ हरि चलितु सुणावै ।

bhagat karan mil due jane naamadeo har chalit sunaavai |

Together they would concentrate on the Lord and Namdev would tell him the grand stories of God.


ਮੇਰੀ ਭੀ ਕਰਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ।

मेरी भी करि बेनती दरसनु देखां जे तिसु भावै ।

meree bhee kar benatee darasan dekhaan je tis bhaavai |

(Trilochan asked Namdev) “kindly pray for me so that if the Lord accepts, I may also have a glimpse of His blessed vision.”


ਠਾਕੁਰ ਜੀ ਨੋ ਪੁਛਿਓਸੁ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਕਿਵੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ।

ठाकुर जी नो पुछिओसु दरसनु किवै त्रिलोचनु पावै ।

tthaakur jee no puchhios darasan kivai trilochan paavai |

Namdev asked Thakur, the Lord, as to how Trilochan could have sight of the Lord ?


ਹਸਿ ਕੈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਨੋ ਕਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ।

हसि कै ठाकुर बोलिआ नामदेउ नो कहि समझावै ।

has kai tthaakur boliaa naamadeo no keh samajhaavai |

The Lord God smiled and explained to Naamdev;


ਹਥਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਭੇਟੁ ਸੋ ਤੁਸਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਚਨ ਮੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

हथि न आवै भेटु सो तुसि त्रिलोचन मै मुहि लावै ।

hath na aavai bhett so tus trilochan mai muhi laavai |

“No offerings are needed by me. Out of my delight only, I would make Trilochan to have sight of me.


ਹਉ ਅਧੀਨੁ ਹਾਂ ਭਗਤ ਦੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਿ ਨ ਹੰਘਾਂ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾਵੈ ।

हउ अधीनु हां भगत दे पहुंचि न हंघां भगती दावै ।

hau adheen haan bhagat de pahunch na hanghaan bhagatee daavai |

I am under the total control of the devotees and their loving claims I can never reject; rather I myself also cannot understand them.


ਹੋਇ ਵਿਚੋਲਾ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ।੧੨।

होइ विचोला आणि मिलावै ।१२।

hoe vicholaa aan milaavai |12|

Their loving devotion, in fact, becomes mediator and makes them meet me.”

ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੁ ਪੂਜੈ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਧੰਨਾ ਗਊ ਚਰਾਵਣਿ ਆਵੈ ।

बाम्हणु पूजै देवते धंना गऊ चरावणि आवै ।

baamhan poojai devate dhanaa gaoo charaavan aavai |

A brahman would worship gods (in the form of stone idols) where Dhanna used to graze his cow.


ਧੰਨੈ ਡਿਠਾ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਏਹੁ ਪੂਛੈ ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ।

धंनै डिठा चलितु एहु पूछै बाम्हणु आखि सुणावै ।

dhanai dditthaa chalit ehu poochhai baamhan aakh sunaavai |

On seeing his worship, Dhanna asked the brahman what he was doing.


ਠਾਕੁਰ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ।

ठाकुर दी सेवा करे जो इछै सोई फलु पावै ।

tthaakur dee sevaa kare jo ichhai soee fal paavai |

“Service to the Thakur (God) gives the desired fruit,” replied the brahman.


ਧੰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਜੋਦੜੀ ਮੈ ਭਿ ਦੇਹ ਇਕ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ।

धंना करदा जोदड़ी मै भि देह इक जे तुधु भावै ।

dhanaa karadaa jodarree mai bhi deh ik je tudh bhaavai |

Dhanna requested, “O brahman, if you agree kindly give one to me.”


ਪਥਰੁ ਇਕੁ ਲਪੇਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇ ਧੰਨੈ ਨੋ ਗੈਲ ਛੁਡਾਵੈ ।

पथरु इकु लपेटि करि दे धंनै नो गैल छुडावै ।

pathar ik lapett kar de dhanai no gail chhuddaavai |

The brahman rolled a stone, gave it to Dhanna and thus got rid of him.


ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੋ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਾਲਿ ਕੈ ਛਾਹਿ ਰੋਟੀ ਲੈ ਭੋਗੁ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਵੈ ।

ठाकुर नो न्हावालि कै छाहि रोटी लै भोगु चढ़ावै ।

tthaakur no nhaavaal kai chhaeh rottee lai bhog charrhaavai |

Dhanna bathed the Thakur and offered him bread and buttermilk.


ਹਥਿ ਜੋੜਿ ਮਿਨਤਿ ਕਰੈ ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਾਵੈ ।

हथि जोड़ि मिनति करै पैरी पै पै बहुतु मनावै ।

hath jorr minat karai pairee pai pai bahut manaavai |

With folded hands and falling at the feet of the stone he begged for his service to be accepted.


ਹਉ ਭੀ ਮੁਹੁ ਨ ਜੁਠਾਲਸਾਂ ਤੂ ਰੁਠਾ ਮੈ ਕਿਹੁ ਨ ਸੁਖਾਵੈ ।

हउ भी मुहु न जुठालसां तू रुठा मै किहु न सुखावै ।

hau bhee muhu na jutthaalasaan too rutthaa mai kihu na sukhaavai |

Dhanna said, “I will also not eat because how can I be happy if you are annoyed.”


ਗੋਸਾਈ ਪਰਤਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਰੋਟੀ ਖਾਇ ਛਾਹਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

गोसाई परतखि होइ रोटी खाइ छाहि मुहि लावै ।

gosaaee paratakh hoe rottee khaae chhaeh muhi laavai |

(Seeing his true and loving devotion) God was forced to appear and eat his bread and buttermilk.


ਭੋਲਾ ਭਾਉ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ।੧੩।

भोला भाउ गोबिंदु मिलावै ।१३।

bholaa bhaau gobind milaavai |13|

In fact, innocence like that of Dhanna makes the sight of the Lord available.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੇਣੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਇਕਾਂਤੁ ਬਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵੈ ।

गुरमुखि बेणी भगति करि जाइ इकांतु बहै लिव लावै ।

guramukh benee bhagat kar jaae ikaant bahai liv laavai |

Saint Beni, a gurmukh, used to sit in solitude and would enter a meditative trance.


ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਧਿਆਤਮੀ ਹੋਰਸੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਵੈ ।

करम करै अधिआतमी होरसु किसै न अलखु लखावै ।

karam karai adhiaatamee horas kisai na alakh lakhaavai |

He would perform spiritual activities and in humbleness would never tell anyone.


ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਾ ਪੁਛੀਐ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਆਲਾਵੈ ।

घरि आइआ जा पुछीऐ राज दुआरि गइआ आलावै ।

ghar aaeaa jaa puchheeai raaj duaar geaa aalaavai |

Reaching back home when asked, he would tell people that he had gone to the door of his king (the Supreme Lord).


ਘਰਿ ਸਭ ਵਥੂ ਮੰਗੀਅਨਿ ਵਲੁ ਛਲੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਝਤ ਲੰਘਾਵੈ ।

घरि सभ वथू मंगीअनि वलु छलु करि कै झत लंघावै ।

ghar sabh vathoo mangeean val chhal kar kai jhat langhaavai |

When his wife asked for some household material he would avoid her and thus spend his time performing spiritual activities.


ਵਡਾ ਸਾਂਗੁ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਓਹ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ।

वडा सांगु वरतदा ओह इक मनि परमेसरु धिआवै ।

vaddaa saang varatadaa oeh ik man paramesar dhiaavai |

One day while concentrating on the Lord with single-minded devotion, a strange miracle happened.


ਪੈਜ ਸਵਾਰੈ ਭਗਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ।

पैज सवारै भगत दी राजा होइ कै घरि चलि आवै ।

paij savaarai bhagat dee raajaa hoe kai ghar chal aavai |

To keep the glory of the devotee, God Himself in the form of King went to his house.


ਦੇਇ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਤੁਸਿ ਕੈ ਅਣਗਣਤੀ ਖਰਚੀ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਵੈ ।

देइ दिलासा तुसि कै अणगणती खरची पहुंचावै ।

dee dilaasaa tus kai anaganatee kharachee pahunchaavai |

In great joy, He consoled everyone and made available profuse money for expenditure.


ਓਥਹੁ ਆਇਆ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਉਪਜਾਵੈ ।

ओथहु आइआ भगति पासि होइ दइआलु हेतु उपजावै ।

othahu aaeaa bhagat paas hoe deaal het upajaavai |

From there He came to His devotee Beni and compassionately loved him.


ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਾਵੈ ।੧੪।

भगत जनां जैकारु करावै ।१४।

bhagat janaan jaikaar karaavai |14|

This way He arranges applause for His devotees.

ਹੋਇ ਬਿਰਕਤੁ ਬਨਾਰਸੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਰਾਮਾਨੰਦੁ ਗੁਸਾਈਂ ।

होइ बिरकतु बनारसी रहिंदा रामानंदु गुसाईं ।

hoe birakat banaarasee rahindaa raamaanand gusaaeen |

Being detached from the world, Brahmin Ramanand lived in Varanasi (Kasi).


ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਠਿ ਕੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਗੰਗਾ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਣ ਤਾਈਂ ।

अंम्रितु वेले उठि कै जांदा गंगा न्हावण ताईं ।

amrit vele utth kai jaandaa gangaa nhaavan taaeen |

He would rise early in the morning and go to the Ganges to bathe.


ਅਗੋ ਹੀ ਦੇ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਲੰਮਾ ਪਿਆ ਕਬੀਰ ਤਿਥਾਈਂ ।

अगो ही दे जाइ कै लंमा पिआ कबीर तिथाईं ।

ago hee de jaae kai lamaa piaa kabeer tithaaeen |

Once even before Ramanand, Kabir went there and lay in the way.


ਪੈਰੀ ਟੁੰਬਿ ਉਠਾਲਿਆ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮ ਸਿਖ ਸਮਝਾਈ ।

पैरी टुंबि उठालिआ बोलहु राम सिख समझाई ।

pairee ttunb utthaaliaa bolahu raam sikh samajhaaee |

Touching with his feet Ramanand awakened Kabir and told him to speak ‘Ram’, the true spiritual teaching.


ਜਿਉ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਰਸੁ ਛੁਹੇ ਚੰਦਨ ਵਾਸੁ ਨਿੰਮੁ ਮਹਕਾਈ ।

जिउ लोहा पारसु छुहे चंदन वासु निंमु महकाई ।

jiau lohaa paaras chhuhe chandan vaas ninm mahakaaee |

As the iron touched by philosopher’s stone becomes gold and the margosa tree (Azadirachta indica) is made fragrant by sandal.


ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤਹੁ ਦੇਵ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ।

पसू परेतहु देव करि पूरे सतिगुर दी वडिआई ।

pasoo paretahu dev kar poore satigur dee vaddiaaee |

The wondrous Guru turns even animals and ghosts into angels.


ਅਚਰਜ ਨੋ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੈ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਮਿਲਾਈ ।

अचरज नो अचरजु मिलै विसमादै विसमादु मिलाई ।

acharaj no acharaj milai visamaadai visamaad milaaee |

Meeting the wonderous Guru the disciple wonderfully merges into the great wonderous Lord.


ਝਰਣਾ ਝਰਦਾ ਨਿਝਰਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਘੜ ਘੜਾਈ ।

झरणा झरदा निझरहु गुरमुखि बाणी अघड़ घड़ाई ।

jharanaa jharadaa nijharahu guramukh baanee agharr gharraaee |

Then from the Self springs a fountain and the words of the gurmukhs shape a beautiful form


ਰਾਮ ਕਬੀਰੈ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਭਾਈ ।੧੫।

राम कबीरै भेदु न भाई ।१५।

raam kabeerai bhed na bhaaee |15|

Now Ram and Kabir became identical.

ਸੁਣਿ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਿਖੁ ਹੋਆ ਸੈਣੁ ਨਾਈ ।

सुणि परतापु कबीर दा दूजा सिखु होआ सैणु नाई ।

sun parataap kabeer daa doojaa sikh hoaa sain naaee |

Hearing of glory of Kabir, Sain also turned to be a disciple.


ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਕਰੈ ਭਲਕੈ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਜਾਈ ।

प्रेम भगति राती करै भलकै राज दुआरै जाई ।

prem bhagat raatee karai bhalakai raaj duaarai jaaee |

In the night he would immerse in loving devotion and in the morning he would serve at the door of the king.


ਆਏ ਸੰਤ ਪਰਾਹੁਣੇ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਰੈਣਿ ਸਬਾਈ ।

आए संत पराहुणे कीरतनु होआ रैणि सबाई ।

aae sant paraahune keeratan hoaa rain sabaaee |

On one night some sadhus came to him and the whole night was spent in singing the Lord's praises


ਛਡਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਨ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ।

छडि न सकै संत जन राज दुआरि न सेव कमाई ।

chhadd na sakai sant jan raaj duaar na sev kamaaee |

Sain could not leave company of the saints and consequently did not perform the king’s service the following morning.


ਸੈਣ ਰੂਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਣੈ ਨੋ ਰੀਝਾਈ ।

सैण रूपि हरि जाइ कै आइआ राणै नो रीझाई ।

sain roop har jaae kai aaeaa raanai no reejhaaee |

God himself took the form of Sain. He served the king in such a way that the king was overjoyed.


ਸਾਧ ਜਨਾਂ ਨੋ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਸਰਮਾਈ ।

साध जनां नो विदा करि राज दुआरि गइआ सरमाई ।

saadh janaan no vidaa kar raaj duaar geaa saramaaee |

Bidding fairwell to the saints, Sain hesitantly arrived at the palace of the king.


ਰਾਣੈ ਦੂਰਹੁੰ ਸਦਿ ਕੈ ਗਲਹੁੰ ਕਵਾਇ ਖੋਲਿ ਪੈਨ੍ਹਾਈ ।

राणै दूरहुं सदि कै गलहुं कवाइ खोलि पैन्हाई ।

raanai doorahun sad kai galahun kavaae khol painhaaee |

The king From a distance the king called him nearby. He took off his own robes and offered them to Bhagat Sain.


ਵਸਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਹਉਂ ਤੁਧੁ ਅਜੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਣੈ ਲੁਕਾਈ ।

वसि कीता हउं तुधु अजु बोलै राजा सुणै लुकाई ।

vas keetaa haun tudh aj bolai raajaa sunai lukaaee |

‘You have overpowered me’, said the king and his words were heard by one and all.


ਪਰਗਟੁ ਕਰੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ।੧੬।

परगटु करै भगति वडिआई ।१६।

paragatt karai bhagat vaddiaaee |16|

God himself manifests the grandeur of the devotee.

ਭਗਤੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਗਿ ਵਜਿਆ ਚਹੁ ਚਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਚਮਿਰੇਟਾ ।

भगतु भगतु जगि वजिआ चहु चकां दे विचि चमिरेटा ।

bhagat bhagat jag vajiaa chahu chakaan de vich chamirettaa |

The tanner (Ravidas) became renowned as bhagat (saint) in all the four directions.


ਪਾਣ੍ਹਾ ਗੰਢੈ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚਿ ਕੁਲਾ ਧਰਮ ਢੋਇ ਢੋਰ ਸਮੇਟਾ ।

पाण्हा गंढै राह विचि कुला धरम ढोइ ढोर समेटा ।

paanhaa gandtai raah vich kulaa dharam dtoe dtor samettaa |

In accordance with his family tradition he would cobble the shoes and carry away the dead animals.


ਜਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮੈਲੇ ਚੀਥੜੇ ਹੀਰਾ ਲਾਲੁ ਅਮੋਲੁ ਪਲੇਟਾ ।

जिउ करि मैले चीथड़े हीरा लालु अमोलु पलेटा ।

jiau kar maile cheetharre heeraa laal amol palettaa |

This was his outward routine but in reality he was a gem wrapped in rags.


ਚਹੁ ਵਰਨਾ ਉਪਦੇਸਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਹੇਟਾ ।

चहु वरना उपदेसदा गिआन धिआनु करि भगति सहेटा ।

chahu varanaa upadesadaa giaan dhiaan kar bhagat sahettaa |

He would preach all the four varnas (castes). His preaching made them rapt in the meditative devotion for the Lord.


ਨ੍ਹਾਵਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਸੰਗੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਾਨਾਰਸ ਕਰਿ ਗੰਗਾ ਥੇਟਾ ।

न्हावणि आइआ संगु मिलि बानारस करि गंगा थेटा ।

nhaavan aaeaa sang mil baanaaras kar gangaa thettaa |

Once, a group of people went to Kasi (Varanasi) to have their sacred dip in the Ganges.


ਕਢਿ ਕਸੀਰਾ ਸਉਪਿਆ ਰਵਿਦਾਸੈ ਗੰਗਾ ਦੀ ਭੇਟਾ ।

कढि कसीरा सउपिआ रविदासै गंगा दी भेटा ।

kadt kaseeraa saupiaa ravidaasai gangaa dee bhettaa |

Ravidas gave one dhela (half a pice) to one member and asked him to offer it to the Ganges.


ਲਗਾ ਪੁਰਬੁ ਅਭੀਚ ਦਾ ਡਿਠਾ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਅਮੇਟਾ ।

लगा पुरबु अभीच दा डिठा चलितु अचरजु अमेटा ।

lagaa purab abheech daa dditthaa chalit acharaj amettaa |

A great festival of Abhijit naksatr (star) was on there where the public saw this wonderful episode.


ਲਇਆ ਕਸੀਰਾ ਹਥੁ ਕਢਿ ਸੂਤੁ ਇਕੁ ਜਿਉ ਤਾਣਾ ਪੇਟਾ ।

लइआ कसीरा हथु कढि सूतु इकु जिउ ताणा पेटा ।

leaa kaseeraa hath kadt soot ik jiau taanaa pettaa |

Ganges, herself taking out her hand accepted that paltry amount, dhela, and proved that Ravidas was one with Ganges as warp and weft.


ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਂ ਪਿਉ ਬੇਟਾ ।੧੭।

भगत जनां हरि मां पिउ बेटा ।१७।

bhagat janaan har maan piau bettaa |17|

For bhagats (saints,) God is their mother, father and son all in one.

ਗੋਤਮ ਨਾਰਿ ਅਹਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਖਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਭਾਣਾ ।

गोतम नारि अहिलिआ तिस नो देखि इंद्र लोभाणा ।

gotam naar ahiliaa tis no dekh indr lobhaanaa |

Ahalya was wife of Gautam. But when she set eyes Indhar, the king of gods, lust overpowered her.


ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਰਾਪੁ ਲੈ ਹੋਇ ਸਹਸ ਭਗ ਪਛੋਤਾਣਾ ।

पर घरि जाइ सरापु लै होइ सहस भग पछोताणा ।

par ghar jaae saraap lai hoe sehas bhag pachhotaanaa |

He entered their house, got curse of being with thousands of pudendums and repented.


ਸੁੰਞਾ ਹੋਆ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕੁ ਲੁਕਿਆ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਸਰਮਾਣਾ ।

सुंञा होआ इंद्र लोकु लुकिआ सरवरि मनि सरमाणा ।

sunyaa hoaa indr lok lukiaa saravar man saramaanaa |

The Indralok (abode of Indr) became desolate and getting ashamed of himself he hid in a pond.


ਸਹਸ ਭਗਹੁ ਲੋਇਣ ਸਹਸ ਲੈਂਦੋਈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਪੁਰੀ ਸਿਧਾਣਾ ।

सहस भगहु लोइण सहस लैंदोई इंद्र पुरी सिधाणा ।

sehas bhagahu loein sehas laindoee indr puree sidhaanaa |

On revocation of the curse when all those holes became eyes, only then he returned to his habitat.


ਸਤੀ ਸਤਹੁ ਟਲਿ ਸਿਲਾ ਹੋਇ ਨਦੀ ਕਿਨਾਰੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਪਰਾਣਾ ।

सती सतहु टलि सिला होइ नदी किनारै बाझु पराणा ।

satee satahu ttal silaa hoe nadee kinaarai baajh paraanaa |

Ahalya who could not remain steadfast in her chastity became stone and remained lying on the river bank


ਰਘੁਪਤਿ ਚਰਣਿ ਛੁਹੰਦਿਆ ਚਲੀ ਸੁਰਗ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਣੇ ਬਿਬਾਣਾ ।

रघुपति चरणि छुहंदिआ चली सुरग पुरि बणे बिबाणा ।

raghupat charan chhuhandiaa chalee surag pur bane bibaanaa |

Touching the (holy) feet of Ram she was lifted to the heavens.


ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਭਲਿਆਈਅਹੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਣਾ ।

भगति वछलु भलिआईअहु पतित उधारणु पाप कमाणा ।

bhagat vachhal bhaliaaeeahu patit udhaaran paap kamaanaa |

Because of His benevolence He is mother-like to the devotees and being forgiver of the sinners He is called redeemer of the fallen ones.


ਗੁਣ ਨੋ ਗੁਣ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਕਰੈ ਅਉਗੁਣ ਕੀਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਾਣਾ ।

गुण नो गुण सभ को करै अउगुण कीते गुण तिसु जाणा ।

gun no gun sabh ko karai aaugun keete gun tis jaanaa |

Doing good is returned by good gestures always, but he who does good to the evil is known as virtuous.


ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਾ ।੧੮।

अबिगति गति किआ आखि वखाणा ।१८।

abigat gat kiaa aakh vakhaanaa |18|

How can I explain the greatness of that unmanifest (Lord).

ਵਾਟੈ ਮਾਣਸ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਬੈਠਾ ਬਾਲਮੀਕ ਵਟਵਾੜਾ ।

वाटै माणस मारदा बैठा बालमीक वटवाड़ा ।

vaattai maanas maaradaa baitthaa baalameek vattavaarraa |

Valmeel was a highwayman Valmiki who would rob and kill travellers passing by.


ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਹੋਆ ਖਿੰਜੋਤਾੜਾ ।

पूरा सतिगुरु भेटिआ मन विचि होआ खिंजोताड़ा ।

pooraa satigur bhettiaa man vich hoaa khinjotaarraa |

Then he began serving the true Guru, Now his mind became diffident about his work.


ਮਾਰਨ ਨੋ ਲੋਚੈ ਘਣਾ ਕਢਿ ਨ ਹੰਘੈ ਹਥੁ ਉਘਾੜਾ ।

मारन नो लोचै घणा कढि न हंघै हथु उघाड़ा ।

maaran no lochai ghanaa kadt na hanghai hath ughaarraa |

His mind still urged to kill people but his hands would not obey.


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਨੂਆ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਉਛੇਹਾੜਾ ।

सतिगुर मनूआ राखिआ होइ न आवै उछेहाड़ा ।

satigur manooaa raakhiaa hoe na aavai uchhehaarraa |

The true Guru made his mind tranquil and all the volition of mind came to an end.


ਅਉਗੁਣੁ ਸਭ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਅਨੁ ਰੋਜਗਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਏਹੁ ਅਸਾੜਾ ।

अउगुणु सभ परगासिअनु रोजगारु है एहु असाड़ा ।

aaugun sabh paragaasian rojagaar hai ehu asaarraa |

He unfolded all the evils of mind before the Guru and said, ‘O Lord, this is a profession for me.’


ਘਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਪੁਛਣ ਘਲਿਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲ ਹੈ ਕੋਇ ਅਸਾੜਾ ।

घर विचि पुछण घलिआ अंति काल है कोइ असाड़ा ।

ghar vich puchhan ghaliaa ant kaal hai koe asaarraa |

The Guru asked him to enquire at home as to which family members would be co-partner him of his evil deeds at death.


ਕੋੜਮੜਾ ਚਉਖੰਨੀਐ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਬੇਲੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਝਾੜਾ ।

कोड़मड़ा चउखंनीऐ कोइ न बेली करदे झाड़ा ।

korramarraa chaukhaneeai koe na belee karade jhaarraa |

But although his family were always ready to be sacrifice unto him, none of them were ready to accept responsibility.


ਸਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇ ਉਧਾਰਿਅਨੁ ਟਪਿ ਨਿਕਥਾ ਉਪਰ ਵਾੜਾ ।

सचु द्रिड़ाइ उधारिअनु टपि निकथा उपर वाड़ा ।

sach drirraae udhaarian ttap nikathaa upar vaarraa |

On returning, the Guru placed the sermon of truth within his heart and made him a liberated one. With a single leap he was released from the net of worldliness.

गुरमुखि लंघे पाप पहाड़ा ।१९।

Becoming gurmukh, one becomes capable of jumping across mountains of sins.

ਪਤਿਤੁ ਅਜਾਮਲ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕਲਾਵਤਣੀ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਆ ।

पतितु अजामल पापु करि जाइ कलावतणी दे रहिआ ।

patit ajaamal paap kar jaae kalaavatanee de rahiaa |

Ajamil, the fallen sinner lived with a prostitute.


ਗੁਰੁ ਤੇ ਬੇਮੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦਹਿਆ ।

गुरु ते बेमुखु होइ कै पाप कमावै दुरमति दहिआ ।

gur te bemukh hoe kai paap kamaavai duramat dahiaa |

He became an apostate. He was entangled in the cobweb of evil deeds.


ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਭਵਜਲ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਵਹਿਆ ।

बिरथा जनमु गवाइआ भवजल अंदरि फिरदा वहिआ ।

birathaa janam gavaaeaa bhavajal andar firadaa vahiaa |

His life was wasted in futile deeds and was tossed and thrown within the terrifying worldly ocean.


ਛਿਅ ਪੁਤ ਜਾਏ ਵੇਸੁਆ ਪਾਪਾ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਇਛੇ ਲਹਿਆ ।

छिअ पुत जाए वेसुआ पापा दे फल इछे लहिआ ।

chhia put jaae vesuaa paapaa de fal ichhe lahiaa |

While with the prostitute, he became the father of six sons. As a result of her bad deeds they all became dangerous robbers.


ਪੁਤੁ ਉਪੰਨਾਂ ਸਤਵਾਂ ਨਾਉ ਧਰਣ ਨੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਉਮਹਿਆ ।

पुतु उपंनां सतवां नाउ धरण नो चिति उमहिआ ।

put upanaan satavaan naau dharan no chit umahiaa |

A seventh son was born and he began to consider a name for the child.


ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਉ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹਿਆ ।

गुरू दुआरै जाइ कै गुरमुखि नाउ नराइणु कहिआ ।

guroo duaarai jaae kai guramukh naau naraaein kahiaa |

He visited the Guru who named his son Narayan (a name for God).


ਅੰਤਕਾਲ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਵੇਖਿ ਪੁਤ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਛਹਿਆ ।

अंतकाल जमदूत वेखि पुत नराइणु बोलै छहिआ ।

antakaal jamadoot vekh put naraaein bolai chhahiaa |

At the end of his life, seeing the messengers of death Ajamil cried for Narayan.


ਜਮ ਗਣ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨਾਂ ਗਇਆ ਸੁਰਗ ਜਮੁ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਸਹਿਆ ।

जम गण मारे हरि जनां गइआ सुरग जमु डंडु न सहिआ ।

jam gan maare har janaan geaa surag jam ddandd na sahiaa |

The name of God made the death messengers take to their heels. Ajamil went to heaven and did not suffer the beatings from the club of the messengers of death.


ਨਾਇ ਲਏ ਦੁਖੁ ਡੇਰਾ ਢਹਿਆ ।੨੦।

नाइ लए दुखु डेरा ढहिआ ।२०।

naae le dukh dderaa dtahiaa |20|

Utterance of Name of the Lord dispels all sorrow.

ਗਨਿਕਾ ਪਾਪਣਿ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਗਲਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਪਰੋਤਾ ।

गनिका पापणि होइ कै पापां दा गलि हारु परोता ।

ganikaa paapan hoe kai paapaan daa gal haar parotaa |

Gankaa was a sinful prostitute who wore the necklace of misdeeds around her neck.


ਮਹਾਂ ਪੁਰਖ ਆਚਾਣਚਕ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਵਾੜੇ ਆਇ ਖਲੋਤਾ ।

महां पुरख आचाणचक गनिका वाड़े आइ खलोता ।

mahaan purakh aachaanachak ganikaa vaarre aae khalotaa |

Once a great man was passing by who halted in her courtyard.


ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਹਥਹੁ ਉਸ ਨੋ ਦਿਤੋਨੁ ਤੋਤਾ ।

दुरमति देखि दइआलु होइ हथहु उस नो दितोनु तोता ।

duramat dekh deaal hoe hathahu us no diton totaa |

Seeing her bad plight he became compassionate and offered her a special parrot.


ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਖੇਲਿ ਗਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਣਜੁ ਸਓਤਾ ।

राम नामु उपदेसु करि खेलि गइआ दे वणजु सओता ।

raam naam upades kar khel geaa de vanaj sotaa |

He told her to teach the parrot to repeat the name of Ram. Having made her understand this fruitful trade he then went away.


ਲਿਵ ਲਗੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਤੋਤਿਅਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਏ ਕਰੈ ਅਸੋਤਾ ।

लिव लगी तिसु तोतिअहु नित पढ़ाए करै असोता ।

liv lagee tis totiahu nit parrhaae karai asotaa |

Each and every day, with full concentration, she would teach the parrot to say Ram.


ਪਤਿਤੁ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਲੇਵਰੁ ਧੋਤਾ ।

पतितु उधारणु राम नामु दुरमति पाप कलेवरु धोता ।

patit udhaaran raam naam duramat paap kalevar dhotaa |

The name of Lord is the liberator of the fallen ones. It washed away her evil wisdom and deeds.


ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੁ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਰਕੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਨ ਖਾਧੁ ਸੁ ਗੋਤਾ ।

अंत कालि जम जालु तोड़ि नरकै विचि न खाधु सु गोता ।

ant kaal jam jaal torr narakai vich na khaadh su gotaa |

At the time of death, it cut away the noose of Yama - the messenger of death she did not have to drown in the ocean of hell.


ਗਈ ਬੈਕੁੰਠਿ ਬਿਬਾਣਿ ਚੜ੍ਹਿ ਨਾਉਂ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਛੋਤਿ ਅਛੋਤਾ ।

गई बैकुंठि बिबाणि चढ़ि नाउं रसाइणु छोति अछोता ।

gee baikuntth bibaan charrh naaun rasaaein chhot achhotaa |

Due to the elixir of name (of the Lord) she became totally devoid of sins and was lifted to the heavens.


ਥਾਉਂ ਨਿਥਾਵੇਂ ਮਾਣੁ ਮਣੋਤਾ ।੨੧।

थाउं निथावें माणु मणोता ।२१।

thaaun nithaaven maan manotaa |21|

The name (of the Lord) is the last refuge of the shelterless ones.

ਆਈ ਪਾਪਣਿ ਪੂਤਨਾ ਦੁਹੀ ਥਣੀ ਵਿਹੁ ਲਾਇ ਵਹੇਲੀ ।

आई पापणि पूतना दुही थणी विहु लाइ वहेली ।

aaee paapan pootanaa duhee thanee vihu laae vahelee |

The ill-reputed Putana applied poison on both of her teats.


ਆਇ ਬੈਠੀ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿਚਿ ਨੇਹੁੰ ਲਾਇ ਨਵਹਾਣਿ ਨਵੇਲੀ ।

आइ बैठी परवार विचि नेहुं लाइ नवहाणि नवेली ।

aae baitthee paravaar vich nehun laae navahaan navelee |

She came to the family (of Nand) and started to express her newfound love for the family.


ਕੁਛੜਿ ਲਏ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਰਾਇ ਕਰਿ ਚੇਟਕੁ ਚਤੁਰੰਗ ਮਹੇਲੀ ।

कुछड़ि लए गोविंद राइ करि चेटकु चतुरंग महेली ।

kuchharr le govind raae kar chettak chaturang mahelee |

Through her clever deception, she lifted Krishna in her lap.


ਮੋਹਣੁ ਮੰਮੇ ਪਾਇਓਨੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਆਈ ਗਰਬ ਗਹੇਲੀ ।

मोहणु मंमे पाइओनु बाहरि आई गरब गहेली ।

mohan mame paaeon baahar aaee garab gahelee |

With great pride she pressed her breast teat in the mouth of Krishna and came out.


ਦੇਹ ਵਧਾਇ ਉਚਾਇਅਨੁ ਤਿਹ ਚਰਿਆਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਅਠਿਖੇਲੀ ।

देह वधाइ उचाइअनु तिह चरिआरि नारि अठिखेली ।

deh vadhaae uchaaeian tih chariaar naar atthikhelee |

Now she expanded her body to a great extent.


ਤਿਹੁੰ ਲੋਆਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਰੁ ਦੇ ਚੰਬੜਿਆ ਗਲਿ ਹੋਇ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ।

तिहुं लोआं दा भारु दे चंबड़िआ गलि होइ दुहेली ।

tihun loaan daa bhaar de chanbarriaa gal hoe duhelee |

Krishna also becoming the full weight of the three worlds hung from and stuck to her neck.


ਖਾਇ ਪਛਾੜ ਪਹਾੜ ਵਾਂਗਿ ਜਾਇ ਪਈ ਉਜਾੜਿ ਧਕੇਲੀ ।

खाइ पछाड़ पहाड़ वांगि जाइ पई उजाड़ि धकेली ।

khaae pachhaarr pahaarr vaang jaae pee ujaarr dhakelee |

Getting unconscious, and like a mountain she fell down into the forest.


ਕੀਤੀ ਮਾਊ ਤੁਲਿ ਸਹੇਲੀ ।੨੨।

कीती माऊ तुलि सहेली ।२२।

keetee maaoo tul sahelee |22|

Krishna liberated her at last and gave her status of equal to his mother’s friend.

ਜਾਇ ਸੁਤਾ ਪਰਭਾਸ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੋਡੇ ਉਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਪਸਾਰੇ ।

जाइ सुता परभास विचि गोडे उते पैर पसारे ।

jaae sutaa parabhaas vich godde ute pair pasaare |

At the sacred place of Prabhas, Krishna slept cross legged with his foot on his knee.


ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਦਮੁ ਹੈ ਝਿਲਮਿਲ ਝਲਕੇ ਵਾਂਗੀ ਤਾਰੇ ।

चरण कवल विचि पदमु है झिलमिल झलके वांगी तारे ।

charan kaval vich padam hai jhilamil jhalake vaangee taare |

The lotus sign in his foot was illuminating like a star.


ਬਧਕੁ ਆਇਆ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਮਿਰਗੈ ਜਾਣਿ ਬਾਣੁ ਲੈ ਮਾਰੇ ।

बधकु आइआ भालदा मिरगै जाणि बाणु लै मारे ।

badhak aaeaa bhaaladaa miragai jaan baan lai maare |

A hunter came and considering it an eye of a deer, shot the arrow.


ਦਰਸਨ ਡਿਠੋਸੁ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ।

दरसन डिठोसु जाइ कै करण पलाव करे पुकारे ।

darasan dditthos jaae kai karan palaav kare pukaare |

As he approached, he realised it was Krishna. He became full of sorrow and begged forgiveness.


ਗਲਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੀਤਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਜੀ ਅਵਗੁਣੁ ਕੀਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਚਿਤਾਰੇ ।

गलि विचि लीता क्रिसन जी अवगुणु कीता हरि न चितारे ।

gal vich leetaa krisan jee avagun keetaa har na chitaare |

Krishna ignored his wrong act and embraced him.


ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣੁ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ।

करि किरपा संतोखिआ पतित उधारणु बिरदु बीचारे ।

kar kirapaa santokhiaa patit udhaaran birad beechaare |

Gracefully Krishna asked him to be full of perseverance and gave sactuary to the wrongdoer.


ਭਲੇ ਭਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ।

भले भले करि मंनीअनि बुरिआं दे हरि काज सवारे ।

bhale bhale kar maneean buriaan de har kaaj savaare |

The good is said good by everyone but the works of the evil doers are set right by the Lord only.


ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇਂਦੇ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰੇ ।੨੩।੧੦।

पाप करेंदे पतित उधारे ।२३।१०।

He has liberated many fallen sinners.
