ध्रू हसदा घरि आइआ करि पिआरु पिउ कुछड़ि लीता ।

dhraoo hasadaa ghar aaeaa kar piaar piau kuchharr leetaa |

Boy Dhruv came smiling to his house (palace) and his father full of love put him into his lap.

Seeing this, the stepmother got angry and catching hold of his arm, pushed him out of the lap of the father (the king).

The Lord should be worshipped and thus the sinners also become sacred ones (said the mother).

Listening to this and getting totally detached in his mind, Dhruv went out (to the jungle) to undertake rigorous discipline.

On the way, sage Narad taught him the technique of devotion and Dhru quaffed the nectar from the ocean of the Name of the Lord.

(After some time) King (Uttanpad) called him back and asked him (Dhru) to rule forever.

घरि हरणाखस दैत दे कलरि कवलु भगतु प्रहिलादु ।

ghar haranaakhas dait de kalar kaval bhagat prahilaad |

Prahlad, the saint, was born in the house of demon (king) Hiranakas, like a lotus is born in the alkaline (barren) land.

ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਚਾਟਸਾਲ ਪਾਂਧੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਹੋਆ ਅਹਿਲਾਦੁ ।

parrhan patthaaeaa chaattasaal paandhe chit hoaa ahilaad |

When he was sent to seminary, the brahmin purohit became elated (because the king’s son was now his disciple).

Now all the disciples became devotees of Lord, which was an awful and embarrassing situation for all the teachers.

ਰਾਜੇ ਪਾਸਿ ਰੂਆਇਆ ਦੋਖੀ ਦੈਤਿ ਵਧਾਇਆ ਵਾਦੁ ।

raaje paas rooaaeaa dokhee dait vadhaaeaa vaad |

The priest (teacher) reported or complained to the king (that O king your son has become devotee of God). The malevolent demon picked up the quarrel.

jal aganee vich ghatiaa jalai na ddubai gur parasaad |

Prahlad was thrown into fire and water but with the grace of Guru (the Lord), neither he was burnt nor drowned.

ਕਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਸਦਿ ਪੁਛਿਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਸੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੈ ਉਸਤਾਦੁ ।

kadt kharrag sad puchhiaa kaun su teraa hai usataad |

Angered as he was, Hiranyaksha took out his sword and asked Prahlad who his Guru was.

At the same moment, Lord God in the form of man-lion came out of pillar. His form was grand and majestic.

ਬੇਮੁਖ ਪਕੜਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਅਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ।

बेमुख पकड़ि पछाड़िअनु संत सहाई आदि जुगादि ।

bemukh pakarr pachhaarrian sant sahaaee aad jugaad |

That wicked demon was thrown down and killed and thus it was proved that the Lord is kind to devotees since the time immemorial.

bal raajaa ghar aapanai andar baitthaa jag karaavai |

Bali, the king, was busy in performing a yajna in his palace.

ਬਾਵਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਆਇਆ ਚਾਰਿ ਵੇਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਠ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ।

baavan roopee aaeaa chaar ved mukh paatth sunaavai |

A low stature dwarf, in the form of brahmin came there, reciting all the four Vedas.

ਰਾਜੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਦਿਆ ਮੰਗੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ।

raaje andar sadiaa mang suaamee jo tudh bhaavai |

The king after calling him in, asked him to demand anything he liked.

ਅਛਲੁ ਛਲਣਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਇਆ ਸੁਕ੍ਰ ਪੁਰੋਹਿਤੁ ਕਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ।

अछलु छलणि तुधु आइआ सुक्र पुरोहितु कहि समझावै ।

achhal chhalan tudh aaeaa sukr purohit keh samajhaavai |

Immediately, priest Sukracharya made the king (Bali) understand that he (the beggar) is undeceivable God and He had come to delude him.

ਕਰੌ ਅਢਾਈ ਧਰਤਿ ਮੰਗਿ ਪਿਛਹੁ ਦੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਲੋਅ ਨ ਮਾਵੈ ।

करौ अढाई धरति मंगि पिछहु दे त्रिहु लोअ न मावै ।

karau adtaaee dharat mang pichhahu de trihu loa na maavai |

The dwarf demanded two and half steps length of earth (which was granted by the king). Then the dwarf expanded his body so much that now the three worlds were insufficient for him.

दुइ करवां करि तिंन लोअ बलि राजा लै मगरु मिणावै ।

due karavaan kar tin loa bal raajaa lai magar minaavai |

When he covered the three worlds in two steps, for third half-step, king Bali offered his own back.

ਬਲਿ ਛਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਛਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

बलि छलि आपु छलाइअनु होइ दइआलु मिलै गलि लावै ।

bal chhal aap chhalaaeian hoe deaal milai gal laavai |

Even knowing this deception, Bali allowed himself to be deceived, and seeing this Vishnu embraced him.

ditaa raaj pataal daa hoe adheen bhagat jas gaavai |

Bali was given the kingdom of the netherworld, where, surrendering to God, he engaged himself in the loving devotion of the Lord.

अंबरीक मुहि वरतु है राति पई दुरबासा आइआ ।

anbareek muhi varat hai raat pee durabaasaa aaeaa |

One evening while king Ambarik was fasting, he was visited by sage Durvasa.

ਭੀੜਾ ਓਸੁ ਉਪਾਰਣਾ ਓਹੁ ਉਠਿ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਣਿ ਨਦੀ ਸਿਧਾਇਆ ।

भीड़ा ओसु उपारणा ओहु उठि न्हावणि नदी सिधाइआ ।

bheerraa os upaaranaa ohu utth nhaavan nadee sidhaaeaa |

The king was to break his fast while serving Durvasa, but the rishi went to the riverbank to take a bath.

ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਪੋਖਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਸਰਾਪੁ ਦੇਣ ਨੋ ਧਾਇਆ ।

चरणोदकु लै पोखिआ ओहु सरापु देण नो धाइआ ।

charanodak lai pokhiaa ohu saraap den no dhaaeaa |

Fearing the change of date (which would deem his fast fruitless), the king broke his fast by drinking the water which he had poured on the feet of the rishi. When the rishi realized that the king had not served him first, he ran to curse the king.

ਚਕ੍ਰ ਸੁਦਰਸਨੁ ਕਾਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਇ ਭੀਹਾਵਲੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ।

चक्र सुदरसनु काल रूप होइ भीहावलु गरबु गवाइआ ।

chakr sudarasan kaal roop hoe bheehaaval garab gavaaeaa |

On this, Vishnu ordered his death like disc to move towards Durvasa and thus the ego of Durvasa was removed.

ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੁ ਭੰਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਲੈ ਰਖਿ ਨ ਹੰਘਨਿ ਦੇਵ ਸਬਾਇਆ ।

बाम्हणु भंना जीउ लै रखि न हंघनि देव सबाइआ ।

baamhan bhanaa jeeo lai rakh na hanghan dev sabaaeaa |

Now Brahmin Durvasa ran for his life. Even the gods and deities could not afford him shelter.

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕੁ ਸਿਵ ਲੋਕੁ ਤਜਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲੋਕੁ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਤਜਾਇਆ ।

इंद्र लोकु सिव लोकु तजि ब्रहम लोकु बैकुंठ तजाइआ ।

eindr lok siv lok taj braham lok baikuntth tajaaeaa |

He was avoided in the abodes of Indra, Siva, Brahma and the heavens.

ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ਸਣੁ ਸਿਖਿ ਦੇਇ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ।

devatiaan bhagavaan san sikh dee sabhanaan samajhaaeaa |

Gods and God made him understand (that none except Ambarik could save him).

ਆਇ ਪਇਆ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਮਾਰੀਦਾ ਅੰਬਰੀਕ ਛੁਡਾਇਆ ।

आइ पइआ सरणागती मारीदा अंबरीक छुडाइआ ।

aae peaa saranaagatee maareedaa anbareek chhuddaaeaa |

Then he surrendered before Ambarik and Ambarik saved the dying sage.

भगतु वडा राजा जनकु है गुरमुखि माइआ विचि उदासी ।

bhagat vaddaa raajaa janak hai guramukh maaeaa vich udaasee |

King Janak was a great saint Gurmukh, who amidst maya remained indifferent to it.

ਦੇਵ ਲੋਕ ਨੋ ਚਲਿਆ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬੁ ਸਭਾ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ।

देव लोक नो चलिआ गण गंधरबु सभा सुखवासी ।

dev lok no chaliaa gan gandharab sabhaa sukhavaasee |

Along with gans and gandharvs (celestial musicians) he went to the abode of the gods.

ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਸੁਣਿ ਵਿਲਲਾਵਨਿ ਜੀਅ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ।

जमपुरि गइआ पुकार सुणि विललावनि जीअ नरक निवासी ।

jamapur geaa pukaar sun vilalaavan jeea narak nivaasee |

From there, he, hearing the cries of inhabitants of hell, went to them.

dharamaraae no aakhion sabhanaa dee kar band khalaasee |

He asked the god of death, Dharamrai, to relieve all their suffering.

ਕਰੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਧਰਮਰਾਇ ਹਉ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ।

करे बेनती धरमराइ हउ सेवकु ठाकुरु अबिनासी ।

kare benatee dharamaraae hau sevak tthaakur abinaasee |

Hearing this, the god of death told him he was a mere servant of the eternal Lord (and without His orders he could not liberate them).

ਗਹਿਣੇ ਧਰਿਓਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਪਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਰੈ ਨਿਰਜਾਸੀ ।

gahine dharion ik naau paapaa naal karai nirajaasee |

Janak offered a part of his devotion and remembrance of the name of the Lord to Dharamrai, so that he could forgive their sins.

ਪਾਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਨ ਪੁਜਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਉ ਅਤੁਲ ਨ ਤੁਲਾਸੀ ।

पासंगि पापु न पुजनी गुरमुखि नाउ अतुल न तुलासी ।

paasang paap na pujanee guramukh naau atul na tulaasee |

All the sins of hell were found not equal even to the counterweight of balance. In fact, no balance can weigh the fruits of recitation and remembrance of the Lord's name by the gurmukh.

narakahu chhutte jeea jant kattee galahun silak jam faasee |

All the creatures got liberated from hell and the noose of death was cut.

सुखु राजे हरीचंद घरि नारि सु तारा लोचन राणी ।

sukh raaje hareechand ghar naar su taaraa lochan raanee |

King Harichand had a queen with beautiful eyes, Tara, who had made his home the abode of comforts.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਵਦੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਜਾਇ ਸੁਣੈ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ।

saadhasangat mil gaavade raatee jaae sunai gurabaanee |

At night, she would go to the place where in the form of holy congregation (sadhsangat), would recite the holy hymns Gurbani.

ਪਿਛੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਅਧੀ ਰਾਤਿ ਨਿਖੰਡਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ।

पिछै राजा जागिआ अधी राति निखंडि विहाणी ।

pichhai raajaa jaagiaa adhee raat nikhandd vihaanee |

After she had left, the King awoke in the middle of the night and realized she had gone.

ਰਾਣੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਮਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਰਤਿ ਗਈ ਹੈਰਾਣੀ ।

राणी दिसि न आवई मन विचि वरति गई हैराणी ।

raanee dis na aavee man vich varat gee hairaanee |

He could not find the Queen anywhere and his heart filled with astonishment.

ਹੋਰਤੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਉਠਿ ਕੈ ਚਲਿਆ ਪਿਛੈ ਤਰਲ ਜੁਆਣੀ ।

होरतु राती उठि कै चलिआ पिछै तरल जुआणी ।

The following night, he followed the young queen.

raanee pahutee sangatee raaje kharree kharraau neesaanee |

The queen reached the holy congregation and the King lifted one of her sandals from there (so that he could prove the infidelity of the queen).

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਜੋੜੀ ਜੁੜੀ ਖੜਾਉ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ।

saadhasangat aaraadhiaa jorree jurree kharraau puraanee |

When about to go, the queen concentrated upon the holy congregation and the one sandal became a pair.

ਰਾਜੇ ਡਿਠਾ ਚਲਿਤੁ ਇਹੁ ਏਹ ਖੜਾਵ ਹੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ।

राजे डिठा चलितु इहु एह खड़ाव है चोज विडाणी ।

raaje dditthaa chalit ihu eeh kharraav hai choj viddaanee |

The king upheld this feat and realized that her matching sandal was a miracle.

आइआ सुणिआ बिदर दे बोलै दुरजोधनु होइ रुखा ।

aaeaa suniaa bidar de bolai durajodhan hoe rukhaa |

Hearing that Lord Krishan was served and stayed over at humble Bidar's home, Duryodhan remarked sarcastically.

ਘਰਿ ਅਸਾਡੇ ਛਡਿ ਕੈ ਗੋਲੇ ਦੇ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਿ ਸੁਖਾ ।

ghar asaadde chhadd kai gole de ghar jaeh ki sukhaa |

Leaving our grand palaces, how much happiness and comfort did you attain in the home of a servant?

ਭੀਖਮੁ ਦੋਣਾ ਕਰਣ ਤਜਿ ਸਭਾ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਵਡੇ ਮਾਨੁਖਾ ।

भीखमु दोणा करण तजि सभा सीगार वडे मानुखा ।

bheekham donaa karan taj sabhaa seegaar vadde maanukhaa |

You gave up even Bhisham, Dronacharya and Karan, who are recognized as great men who are adorned in all courts.

ਝੁੰਗੀ ਜਾਇ ਵਲਾਇਓਨੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਦੇ ਜੀਅ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧੁਖਾ ।

झुंगी जाइ वलाइओनु सभना दे जीअ अंदरि धुखा ।

jhungee jaae valaaeon sabhanaa de jeea andar dhukhaa |

We have all been anguished to find that you have lived in a hut.

ਹਸਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਜੀ ਸੁਣਿਹੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਹੋਇ ਸਨਮੁਖਾ ।

हसि बोले भगवान जी सुणिहो राजा होइ सनमुखा ।

has bole bhagavaan jee suniho raajaa hoe sanamukhaa |

Then smilingly, Lord Krishan asked the King to come forward and to listen carefully.

tere bhaau na disee mere naahee apadaa dukhaa |

I see no love and devotion in you (and hence I have not come to you).

bhaau jivehaa bidar de horee de chit chaau na chukhaa |

No heart I see has even a fraction of the love that Bidar bears in his heart.

अंदरि सभा दुसासणै मथेवालि द्रोपती आंदी ।

andar sabhaa dusaasanai mathevaal dropatee aandee |

Dragging Dropati by the hair, Dusasan brought her into the assembly.

ਦੂਤਾ ਨੋ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ਨੰਗੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਪੰਚਾਲੀ ਬਾਂਦੀ ।

dootaa no furamaaeaa nangee karahu panchaalee baandee |

He commanded his men to strip the maidservant Dropati naked.

ਪੰਜੇ ਪਾਂਡੋ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਅਉਘਟਿ ਰੁਧੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਦੀ ।

पंजे पांडो वेखदे अउघटि रुधी नारि जिना दी ।

panje paanddo vekhade aaughatt rudhee naar jinaa dee |

All the five Pandavs whose wife she was, beheld this.

ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਰਿ ਹਾ ਹਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਂਦੀ ।

अखी मीट धिआनु धरि हा हा क्रिसन करै बिललांदी ।

akhee meett dhiaan dhar haa haa krisan karai bilalaandee |

Crying, totally dejected and helpless, she closed her eyes. Single-mindedly she invoked Krishna for help.

ਕਪੜ ਕੋਟੁ ਉਸਾਰਿਓਨੁ ਥਕੇ ਦੂਤ ਨ ਪਾਰਿ ਵਸਾਂਦੀ ।

कपड़ कोटु उसारिओनु थके दूत न पारि वसांदी ।

kaparr kott usaarion thake doot na paar vasaandee |

The servants were taking off the clothes from her body, but more layers of clothes formed a fort around her; the servants got tired, but the layers of clothes were never ending.

ਹਥ ਮਰੋੜਨਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਧੁਣਨਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਨਿ ਕਰਨਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ।

हथ मरोड़नि सिरु धुणनि पछोतानि करनि जाहि जांदी ।

hath marorran sir dhunan pachhotaan karan jaeh jaandee |

The servants were now writhing and frustrated on their abortive attempt and felt that they themselves were ashamed.

ਘਰਿ ਆਈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਪੈਜ ਰਹੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਰਮਾਂਦੀ ।

घरि आई ठाकुर मिले पैज रही बोले सरमांदी ।

ghar aaee tthaakur mile paij rahee bole saramaandee |

On reaching home, Dropati was asked by Lord Krishna whether she was saved in the assembly.

She shyly replied, “Since perennial times you are living up to your reputation of being father of the fatherless ones.”

बिपु सुदामा दालिदी बाल सखाई मित्र सदाए ।

bip sudaamaa daalidee baal sakhaaee mitr sadaae |

Sudama, a poor brahman, was known to be a friend of Krishna from childhood.

ਲਾਗੂ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਮ੍ਹਣੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਦਲਿਦ੍ਰ ਗਵਾਏ ।

लागू होई बाम्हणी मिलि जगदीस दलिद्र गवाए ।

laagoo hoee baamhanee mil jagadees dalidr gavaae |

His brahmin wife always pestered him as to why he did not go to Lord Krishna to alleviate his poverty.

ਚਲਿਆ ਗਣਦਾ ਗਟੀਆਂ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਕਉਣੁ ਮਿਲਾਏ ।

चलिआ गणदा गटीआं किउ करि जाईऐ कउणु मिलाए ।

chaliaa ganadaa gatteean kiau kar jaaeeai kaun milaae |

He was perplexed and pondered over how he could get re-introduced to Krishna, who could help him meet the Lord.

ਪਹੁਤਾ ਨਗਰਿ ਦੁਆਰਕਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਜਾਏ ।

पहुता नगरि दुआरका सिंघ दुआरि खलोता जाए ।

pahutaa nagar duaarakaa singh duaar khalotaa jaae |

He reached the town of Dwaraka and stood before the main gate (of the palace of Krishna).

ਦੂਰਹੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡੰਡਉਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਛਡਿ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਆਏ ।

दूरहु देखि डंडउति करि छडि सिंघासणु हरि जी आए ।

doorahu dekh ddanddaut kar chhadd singhaasan har jee aae |

Seeing him from a distance, Krishna, the Lord, bowed and leaving his throne came to Sudama.

ਪਹਿਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਰਦਖਣਾ ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਏ ।

पहिले दे परदखणा पैरी पै के लै गलि लाए ।

pahile de paradakhanaa pairee pai ke lai gal laae |

First, he circumambulated around Sudama and then touching his feet he embraced him.

ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਪੈਰ ਧੋਇ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣੁ ਉਤੇ ਬੈਠਾਏ ।

चरणोदकु लै पैर धोइ सिंघासणु उते बैठाए ।

charanodak lai pair dhoe singhaasan ute baitthaae |

Washing his feet he took that water and made Sudama sit on the throne.

ਪੁਛੇ ਕੁਸਲੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਏ ।

पुछे कुसलु पिआरु करि गुर सेवा दी कथा सुणाए ।

puchhe kusal piaar kar gur sevaa dee kathaa sunaae |

Then Krishna lovingly enquired about his welfare and talked about the time when they were together in the service of the guru (Sandipani).

ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੰਦੁਲ ਚਬਿਓਨੁ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰੇ ਅਗੈ ਪਹੁਚਾਏ ।

लै के तंदुल चबिओनु विदा करे अगै पहुचाए ।

lai ke tandul chabion vidaa kare agai pahuchaae |

Krishna asked for the rice sent by Sudama’s wife and after eating, came out to see off his friend Sudama.

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਕੁਚਿ ਪਠਾਏ ।੯।

चारि पदारथ सकुचि पठाए ।९।

Though all the four boons (righteousness, wealth, fulfillment of desire and liberation) were given to Sudama by Krishna, Krishna's humbleness still made him feel totally helpless.

प्रेम भगति जैदेउ करि गीत गोविंद सहज धुनि गावै ।

prem bhagat jaideo kar geet govind sehaj dhun gaavai |

Getting immersed in the loving devotion, the devotee Jaidev would sing the songs of the Lord (Govind).

ਲੀਲਾ ਚਲਿਤ ਵਖਾਣਦਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ।

लीला चलित वखाणदा अंतरजामी ठाकुर भावै ।

leelaa chalit vakhaanadaa antarajaamee tthaakur bhaavai |

He would describe the glorious feats accomplished by God and was greatly loved by him.

ਅਖਰੁ ਇਕੁ ਨ ਆਵੜੈ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਿ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਵੈ ।

अखरु इकु न आवड़ै पुसतक बंन्हि संधिआ करि आवै ।

akhar ik na aavarrai pusatak banh sandhiaa kar aavai |

He (Jaidev) knew no word and hence binding his book would return home in the evening.

ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਭਗਤ ਰੂਪਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਬਣਾਵੈ ।

गुण निधानु घरि आइ कै भगत रूपि लिखि लेखु बणावै ।

gun nidhaan ghar aae kai bhagat roop likh lekh banaavai |

God, the repository of all virtues, in the form of the devotee Himself, wrote all the songs for him.

ਅਖਰ ਪੜ੍ਹਿ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਸਮਾਦੁ ਨ ਅੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ।

अखर पढ़ि परतीति करि होइ विसमादु न अंगि समावै ।

akhar parrh parateet kar hoe visamaad na ang samaavai |

Jaidev would get elated seeing and reading those words.

ਵੇਖੈ ਜਾਇ ਉਜਾੜਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਇਕੁ ਆਚਰਜੁ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ।

वेखै जाइ उजाड़ि विचि बिरखु इकु आचरजु सुहावै ।

vekhai jaae ujaarr vich birakh ik aacharaj suhaavai |

Jaidev saw a wonderful tree in the deep forest.

ਗੀਤ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਸੰਪੂਰਣੋ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ।

गीत गोविंद संपूरणो पति पति लिखिआ अंतु न पावै ।

geet govind sanpoorano pat pat likhiaa ant na paavai |

Each and every leaf had the songs of the Lord Govind written on it. He could not understand this mystery.

ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਵੈ ।

भगति हेति परगासु करि होइ दइआलु मिलै गलि लावै ।

bhagat het paragaas kar hoe deaal milai gal laavai |

Due to the love for the devotee, God embraced him in person.

कंम किते पिउ चलिआ नामदेउ नो आखि सिधाइआ ।

kam kite piau chaliaa naamadeo no aakh sidhaaeaa |

Namdev's father was called to do some work so he called Naamdev.

ਠਾਕੁਰ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਦੁਧੁ ਪੀਆਵਣੁ ਕਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ।

ठाकुर दी सेवा करी दुधु पीआवणु कहि समझाइआ ।

tthaakur dee sevaa karee dudh peeaavan keh samajhaaeaa |

He told Namdev to serve Thakur, the Lord, with milk.

ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਪਲ ਗਾਇ ਦੁਹਿ ਕੈ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ।

नामदेउ इसनानु करि कपल गाइ दुहि कै लै आइआ ।

naamadeo isanaan kar kapal gaae duhi kai lai aaeaa |

After taking bath, Namdev brought the milk of black-teat cow.

ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੋ ਨ੍ਹਾਵਾਲਿ ਕੈ ਚਰਣੋਦਕੁ ਲੈ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ ।

ठाकुर नो न्हावालि कै चरणोदकु लै तिलकु चढ़ाइआ ।

tthaakur no nhaavaal kai charanodak lai tilak charrhaaeaa |

Having bathed the Thakur, he put the water used to wash the Thakur, on his own head.

हथि जोड़ि बिनती करै दुधु पीअहु जी गोबिंद राइआ ।

hath jorr binatee karai dudh peeahu jee gobind raaeaa |

Now with folded hands, he requested the Lord to have milk.

nihchau kar aaraadhiaa hoe deaal daras dikhalaaeaa |

Becoming steadfast in his thoughts when he prayed, the Lord appeared before him in person.

ਭਰੀ ਕਟੋਰੀ ਨਾਮਦੇਵਿ ਲੈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਨੋ ਦੁਧੁ ਪੀਆਇਆ ।

भरी कटोरी नामदेवि लै ठाकुर नो दुधु पीआइआ ।

bharee kattoree naamadev lai tthaakur no dudh peeaeaa |

On yet another occasion, God rotated the temple (after Naamdev was not allowed entrance) and made all the four castes (varnas) bow at the feet of Namdev.

Trilochan awoke early daily just to have sight of Namdev.

No offerings are needed by me. Out of my delight only, I would make Trilochan to have sight of me.

A brahman would worship gods (in the form of stone idols) where Dhanna used to graze his cow.

“Service to the Thakur (God) gives the desired fruit,” replied the brahman.

Dhanna requested, “O brahman, if you agree, kindly give one to me.”

The brahman rolled a stone, gave it to Dhanna and thus got rid of him.

With folded hands and falling at the feet of the stone idol, he begged for his service to be accepted.

(Seeing his true and loving devotion) God was forced to appear and eat his bread and buttermilk.

Saint Beni, a gurmukh, used to sit in solitude and would enter a meditative trance.

He would perform spiritual activities and in humbleness would never tell anyone.

Reaching back home when asked, he would tell people that he had gone to the door of the king.

When his wife asked for some household material, he would avoid her and thus spend his time performing spiritual activities.

One day while concentrating on the Lord with single-minded devotion, a strange miracle happened.

To keep the glory of the devotee, God Himself in the form of King went to his house.

In great joy, He consoled everyone and made available profuse money for expenditure.

From there, He came to His devotee Beni and compassionately loved him.

Being detached from the world, Brahmin Ramanand lived in Banaras.

He would rise early in the morning and go to the Ganges to bathe.

Once, even before Ramanand, Kabir went there and lay in the way.

Touching with his feet, Ramanand awakened Kabir and told him to speak ‘Ram’, the true spiritual teaching.

As the iron touched by philosopher’s stone becomes gold and the margosa tree (Azadirachta indica) is made fragrant by sandal.

Meeting the wondrous Guru, the disciple wonderfully merges into the great wondrous Lord.

Then from the Self springs a fountain and the words of the gurmukh shape a beautiful form.

Hearing the glory of Kabir, Sain also turned to be a disciple.

In the night, he would immerse in loving devotion and in the morning, he would serve at the door of the king.

On one night, some saints came to him and the whole night was spent in singing the Lord's praises.

ਛਡਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਰਾਜ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਨ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ।

chhadd na sakai sant jan raaj duaar na sev kamaaee |

Sain could not leave the company of the saints and consequently did not perform the king’s service the following morning.

sain roop har jaae kai aaeaa raanai no reejhaaee |

God himself took the form of Sain. He served the king in such a way that the king was overjoyed.

Bidding farewell to the saints, Sain hesitantly arrived at the palace of the king.

raanai doorahun sad kai galahun kavaae khol painhaaee |

The king from a distance called him nearby. He took off his own robes and offered them to Bhagat Sain.

‘You have overpowered me’, said the king and his words were heard by one and all.

The tanner (Ravidas) became renowned as bhagat (saint) in all the four directions.

In accordance with his family tradition, he would cobble the shoes and carry away the dead animals.
