जैसे तिलि बासु बासु लीजीअति कुसम सै तां ते होत है फुलेलि जतन कै जानीऐ ।

Jaisay Tili Baasu Baasu Leejeeati Kousam Sai , Taan Tay Hot Hai Dhulayli Jatan Kai Jaaneeai ।

Just as fragrance is taken from flowers and then it is put in sesame that with some effort yields scented oil.

ਜੈਸੇ ਤਉ ਅਉਟਾਇ ਦੂਧ ਜਾਵਨ ਜਮਾਇ ਮਥਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਹਤਿ ਘ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿ ਕੈ ਮਾਨੀਐ ।

जैसे तउ अउटाइ दूधजावन जमाइ मथि संजम सहति घ्रिति प्रगटि कै मानीऐ ।

Jaisay Tau Aoutaai Doodh Jaavan Jamaai Madi , Sanjam Sahati Ghriti Pragati Kai Maaneeai ।

Just as milk is boiled, converted to curd and then churned yields butter, with some more effort even clarified butter (Ghee) is obtained.

ਜੈਸੇ ਕੂਆ ਖੋਦ ਕੈ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਧਸਾਇ ਕੌਰੀ ਲਾਜੁ ਕੈ ਬਹਾਇ ਡੋਲਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਜਲੁ ਆਨੀਐ ।

जैसे कूआ खोद कै बसुधा धसाइ कौरी लाजु कै बहाइ डोलि काढि जलु आनीऐ ।

Jaisay Kooaa Khod Kai Basudhaa Dhasaai Kauree , Laaju Kai Bahaai Doli Kaaddhi Jalu Aaneeai ।

Just as earth is excavated to dig a well and thereafter (on appearance of water) the side walls of the well are lined, then water is pulled out with the help of rope and bucket.

गुर उपदेस तैसे भावनी भगति भाइ घटि घटि पूरन ब्रहम पहिचानीऐ ॥५३५॥

Gur Oupadays Taisay Bhaavanee Bhagati Bhaai , Ghati Ghati Pooran Braham Pahichaaneeai ॥535॥

Similarly, if the sermon of the True Guru is practiced diligently, with love and devotion, with every breath, the Lord-God becomes conspicuously permeated in every living being. (535)

जैसे तउ सरिता जलु कासटहि न बोरत करत चित लाज अपनोई प्रतिपारिओ है ।

Jaisay Tau Saritaa Jalu Kaasatahi N Borata , Karat Chit Laaj Apanoee Pratipaariao Hai ।

Just as the water of streams and rivers does not sink the wood, it (water) has the shame of the fact that it has irrigated and brought the wood up;

जैसे तउ करत सुत अनिक इआन पन तऊ न जननी अवगुन उरधारिओ है ।

Just as a son commits many mistakes but his mother who has given him birth never recounts them (she still keeps loving him).

जैसे तउ सरंन सूर पूरन परतगिआ राखै लख अपराध कीए मारि न बिडारिओ है ।

Jaisay Tau Sarann Soor Pooran Paratagiaa Raakhai , Lakh Aparaadh Keeay Maari N Bidaariao Hai ।

Just as a culprit who may have myriad vices is not killed by a brave warrior in whose refuge he may have come, the warrior protects him and thus fulfils his virtuous traits.

ਤੈਸੇ ਹੀ ਪਰਮ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸ ਗਤਿ ਸਿਖਨ ਕੋ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੫੩੬॥

तैसे ही परम गुर पारस परस गति सिखन को किरत करमु कछू न बीचारिओ है ॥५३६॥

Taisay Hee Param Gur Paaras Paras Gati , Sikhan Ko Kirat Karamu Kachhoo N Beechaariao Hai ॥536॥

Similarly the supreme benevolent True Guru does not dwell on any of the faults of His Sikhs. He is like touch of philosopher-stone (True Guru removes dross of the Sikhs in His refuge and makes them gold-like precious and pure). (536)

ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਧੋਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਅੰਬਰ ਮਲੀਨ ਹੋਤ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਲ ਮੇਲੇ ਜੈਸੇ ਕੇਸ ਹੂੰ ਭਇਆਨ ਹੈ ।

जैसे जल धोए बिनु अंबर मलीन होत बिनु तेल मेले जैसे केस हूं भइआन है ।

Jaisay Jal Dhoay Binu Anbar Maleen Hota , Binu Tayl Maylay Jaisay Kays Hoon Bhaiaan Hai ।

Just as a cloth not washed with water remains dirty; and the hair remains disheveled and entangled without application of oil;

ਜੈਸੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਾਂਜੇ ਦਰਪਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੀਨ ਹੋਤ ਬਰਖਾ ਬਿਹੂੰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਖੇਤ ਮੈ ਨ ਧਾਨ ਹੈ ।

जैसे बिनु मांजे दरपन जोति हीन होत बरखा बिहूंन जैसे खेत मै न धान है ।

Jaisay Binu Maanjay Darapan Joti Heen Hota , Barakhaa Bihoonn Jaisay Khayt Mai N Dhaan Hai ।

Just as a glass not cleaned cannot let the light come through and just as no crop grows in a field without rain,

ਜੈਸੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਭਵਨ ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਹੋਤ ਲੋਨੇ ਘ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਸਮਾਨ ਹੈ ।

जैसे बिनु दीपकु भवन अंधकार होत लोने घ्रिति बिनु जैसे भोजन समान है ।

Jaisay Binu Deepaku Bhavan Andhakaar Hota , Lonay Ghriti Binu Jaisay Bhojan Samaan Hai ।

Just as a house remains in darkness without a lamp and just as food tastes insipid without salt and ghee,

ਤੈਸੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਮਿਟਤ ਨ ਭੈ ਭਰਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ ॥੫੩੭॥

तैसे बिनु साधसंगति जनम मरन दुख मिटत न भै भरम बिनु गुर गिआन है ॥५३७॥

Taisay Binu Saadhasangati Janam Maran Doukha , Mitat N Bhai Bharam Binu Gur Giaan Hai ॥537॥

Similarly without the company of saintly souls and devotees of the True Guru, the distress of repeated births and death cannot be wiped out. Nor can worldly fears and suspicions be destroyed without practicing on the sermon of the True Guru. (537)

ਜੈਸੇ ਮਾਂਝ ਬੈਠੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਨ ਪਾਰ ਪਰੈ ਪਾਰਸ ਪਰਸੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਾਤ ਨ ਕਨਿਕ ਹੈ ।

जैसे मांझ बैठे बिनु बोहिथा न पार परै पारस परसै बिनु धात न कनिक है ।

Jaisay Maanjh Baitthay Binu Bohidaa N Paar Parai , Paaras Parasai Binu Dhaat N Kanik Hai ।

Just as without embarking a ship, ocean cannot be crossed and without the touch of philosopher-stone, iron, copper or other metals cannot be turned into gold.

ਜੈਸੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੰਗਾ ਨ ਪਾਵਨ ਆਨ ਜਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਰ ਨ ਭਤਾਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਤਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਹੈ ।

जैसे बिनु गंगा न पावन आन जलु है नार न भतारि बिनु सुतन अनिक है ।

Jaisay Binu Gangaa N Paavan Aan Jalu Hai , Naar N Bhataari Binu Soutan Anik Hai ।

Just as no water is considered sacred other than the water of .river Ganges, and no child can be born without conjugal union of husband and wife.

ਜੈਸੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੀਜ ਬੋਏ ਨਿਪਜੈ ਨ ਧਾਨ ਧਾਰਾ ਸੀਪ ਸ੍ਵਾਂਤ ਬੂੰਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਨ ਮਾਨਕ ਹੈ ।

जैसे बिनु बीज बोए निपजै न धान धारा सीप स्वांत बूंद बिनु मुकता न मानक है ।

Jaisay Binu Beej Boay Nipajai N Dhaan Dhaaraa , Seep Svaant Boond Binu Moukataa N Maanak Hai ।

Just as without sowing seeds, no crop can grow and no pearl can be formed in an oyster unless the swati drop of rain falls on it.

ਤੈਸੇ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਮੇਟਿ ਜਨ ਨ ਜਨ ਕਹੈ ॥੫੩੮॥

तैसे गुर चरन सरनि गुर भेटे बिनु जनम मरन मेटि जन न जन कहै ॥५३८॥

Taisay Gur Charan Sarani Gur Bhaytay Binu , Janam Maran Mayti Jan N Jan Kahai ॥538॥

Similarly without taking refuge and consecration of True Guru, there is no other method or force that can end the repeated cycle of birth and death. One who is without the divine word of the Guru cannot be called a human being. (538)

ਜੈਸੇ ਤਉ ਕਹੈ ਮੰਜਾਰ ਕਰਉ ਨ ਅਹਾਰ ਮਾਸ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਾਛੈ ਦਉਰੇ ਧੀਰ ਨ ਧਰਤ ਹੈ ।

जैसे तउ कहै मंजारकरउ न अहार मास मूसा देखि पाछै दउरे धीर न धरत है ।

Jaisay Tau Kahai Manjaar Karau N Ahaar Maasa , Moosaa Daykhi Paachhai Dauray Dheer N Dharat Hai ।

Just as a tom cat says that he has stopped eating meat but as soon as he sees a mouse runs after him (cannot control his desire to eat him up).

जैसे कऊआ रीस कै मराल सभा जाइ बैठे छाडि मुकताहल दुरगंध सिमरत है ।

Jaisay Kaooaa Rees Kai Maraal Sabhaa Jaai Baitthay , Chhaadi Moukataahal Duragandh Simarat Hai ।

Just as a crow goes and sit among swans but leaving aside pearls which is the food of swans, he always desires to eat filth and dross.

ਜੈਸੇ ਮੋਨਿ ਗਹਿ ਸਿਆਰ ਕਰਤ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਤਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਸਿਆਰ ਭਾਖਿਆ ਰਹਿਓ ਨ ਪਰਤ ਹੈ ।

जैसे मोनि गहि सिआर करत अनेक जतन सुनत सिआर भाखिआ रहिओ न परत है ।

Jaisay Moni Gahi Siaar Karat Anayk Jatana , Sounat Siaar Bhaakhiaa Rahiao N Parat Hai ।

Just as a jackal may try myriad times to keep quiet but listening to other jackals just by the force of habit, cannot help howling.

ਤੈਸੇ ਪਰ ਤਨ ਪਰ ਧਨ ਦੂਖ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਦੋਖ ਮਨ ਕਹਤ ਕੈ ਛਾਡਿਓ ਚਾਹੈ ਟੇਵ ਨ ਟਰਤ ਹੈ ॥੫੩੯॥

तैसे पर तन पर धन दूख न त्रिदोख मन कहत कै छाडिओ चाहै टेव न टरत है ॥५३९॥

Taisay Par Tan Par Dhan Dookh N Tridokh Mana , Kahat Kai Chhaadiao Chaahai Tayv N Tarat Hai ॥539॥

Similarly the three vices of ogling at other's wife, keeping an eye on other's wealth and slander are inhabiting in my mind like a chronic disease. Even if someone tells me to leave them, this bad habit cannot go away. (539)

Jholana - If all the 31 Simrities, 18 Purans, Bhagvad Geeta, four Vedas and their grammar become millions and speak,

ਸੇਸ ਮਰਜੇਸ ਅਖਲੇਸ ਸੁਰ ਮਹੇਸ ਮੁਨ ਜਗਤੁ ਅਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਅਤੀਤਾ ।

सेस मरजेस अखलेस सुर महेस मुन जगतु अर भगति सुर नर अतीता ।

Says Marajays Akhalays Sur Mahays Mouna , Jagatu Ar Bhagati Sur Nar Ateetaa ।

If Shesh Nag of thousands of tongues, Dharamraj, Kuber and other gods, Shiva and hermits and saints of the whole world, noble men get together in millions and speak;

ਗਿਆਨ ਅਰ ਧਿਆਨ ਉਨਮਾਨ ਉਨਮਨ ਉਕਤਿ ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦਿ ਦਿਜ ਸੁਰਮਤਿ ਨੀਤਾ ।

गिआन अर धिआन उनमान उनमन उकति राग नादि दिज सुरमति नीता ।

Giaan Ar Dhiaan Ounamaan Ounaman Oukati , Raag Naadi Dij Suramati Neetaa ।

If seekers of many type of knowledge, contemplations and wise men who discuss various subjects, people of higher spiritual state, who can speak about various skills, all the Ragas and their seven notes, knowledgeable scholars, goddess Saraswati and many statesmen become millions and then say-

ਅਰਧ ਲਗ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਅਖਰ ਮੇਕ ਅਗਮ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਮੀਤਾ ॥੫੪੦॥

अरध लग मात्र गुर सबद अखर मेक अगम अति अगम अगाधि मीता ॥५४०॥

Aradh Lag Maatr Gur Sabad Akhar Mayka , Agam Ati Agam Agaadhi Meetaa ॥540॥

O friend! all the above will fall woefully short of saying the praise of a syllable of the True Guru's blessed Naam Gur Mantar. The significance of Guru's words is beyond the extent of all knowledge. (540)

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਸਕਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਵਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਉ ਮਨ ਦਰਸ ਸਮਾਈਐ ।

दरसनु देखिओ सकल संसारु कहै कवन द्रिसटि सउ मन दरस समाईऐ ।

Darasanu Daykhiao Sakal Sansaaru Kahai , Kavan Drisati Sau Man Daras Samaaeeai ।

The whole world claims to have seen. But what is that marvellous sight which engrosses the mind in the looks of the Guru?

गुर उपदेस सुनिओ सुनिओ सभ कोऊ कहै कवन सुरति सुनि अनत न धाईऐ ।

Everyone claims to have listened to the Guru's sermon. But what is that unique voice, hearing which the mind does not wander away?

जै जै कार जपत जगत गुरमंत्र जीह कवन जुगत जोती जोति लिव लाईऐ ।

Jai Jai Kaar Japat Jagat Gurmantr Jeeha , Kavan Jougat Jotee Joti Liv Laaeeai ।

The whole world praises the Guru's incantations and recite it too. But what is that mean which will attach the mind in the radiant Lord.

ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸੁਰਤ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਰਬੰਗ ਹੀਨ ਪਤਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਗੁਰ ਮੂੜ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ॥੫੪੧॥

द्रिसटि सुरत गिआन धिआन सरबंग हीन पतत पावन गुर मूड़ समझाईऐ ॥५४१॥

Drisati Surat Giaan Dhiaan Sarabang Heena , Patat Paavan Gur Moorh Samajhaaeeai ॥541॥

A fool who is devoid of such limbs and appendages that provide him with knowledge of the True Guru and contemplation, True Guru-the maker of pious people out of sinners, bless them with such divine knowledge through Naam Simran. (541)

ਜੈਸੇ ਖਾਂਡ ਖਾਂਡ ਕਹੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਹੀ ਮੀਠਾ ਹੋਇ ਜਬ ਲਗ ਜੀਭ ਸ੍ਵਾਦ ਖਾਂਡੁ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਈਐ ।

जैसे खांड खांड कहै मुखि नही मीठा होइ जब लग जीभ स्वाद खांडु नहीं खाईऐ ।

Jaisay Khaand Khaand Kahai Moukhi Nahee Meetthaa Hoi , Jab Lag Jeebh Svaad Khaandu Naheen Khaaeeai ।

Just as by saying sugar, sugar, one cannot feel sweet taste of sugar in the mouth. Unless sugar is placed on the tongue, it cannot feel its taste.

जैसे रात अंधेरी मै दीपक दीपक कहै तिमर न जाई जब लग न जराईऐ ।

In a dark night, saying lamp, lamp does not dispel darkness unless lamp is lit.

ਜੈਸੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਗਿਆਨ ਕਹੈ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੂੰ ਨ ਹੋਤ ਕਛੁ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ।

जैसे गिआन गिआन कहै गिआन हूं न होत कछु जब लगु गुर गिआन अंतरि न पाईऐ ।

Jaisay Giaan Giaan Kahai Giaan Hoon N Hot Kachhu , Jab Lagu Gur Giaan Antari N Paaeeai ।

Just by saying Gian (Knowledge) again and again, knowledge cannot be obtained. It can only be acquired by lodging His name in the heart.

तैसे गुर धिआन कहै गुर धिआन हू न पावत जब लगु गुर दरस जाइ न समाईऐ ॥५४२॥

Taisay Gur Dhiaan Kahai Gur Dhiaan Hoo N Paavata , Jab Lagu Gur Daras Jaai N Samaaeeai ॥542॥

Similarly just repeatedly asking for a glimpse of True Guru, one cannot acquire contemplation of the True Guru. This is possible only when one engrosses oneself up to the soul in the ardent desire of a glimpse of the True Guru. (542)

Similarly, a man forsakes life of a householder and goes to the jungle for a hermit's life. But unable to achieve spiritual happiness and after wandering here and there returns to his family (One can realise God as a householder by keeping oneself unsullied of maya). (548)

If a glimpse of the True Guru does not turn a disciple in a state that of a moth who is prepared to sacrifice himself unto his beloved lamp, then he cannot be called a true disciple of the Guru.

Hearing the melodious words of True Guru, if a disciple's state does not become like that of a deer who goes into a trance at the sound of Ghanda Herha, then without lodging of Lord's name in his deep within, he has wasted his precious life.

For the acquisition of Naam-like elixir from the True Guru if a disciple does not meet the True Guru with complete faith like the rain-bird yearning for the Swati drop, then he has no faith for the True Guru in his mind nor can he be His devoted follower.

A devoted disciple of the True Guru engrosses his mind in the divine word, practices it and swims in the loving lap of the True Guru as a fish swims in water merrily and contented. (551)

Just as a rodent digs up earth to make a burrow but a snake enters the burrow and eats away the rodent.

Taisay Koti Paap Kari Maaiaa Jori Jori Moorha , Anti Kaali Chhaadi Chalai Dono Kar Jhaari Kai ॥555॥

Similarly an ignorant and foolish person indulges in umpteen sins, collects wealth and leaves this world empty-handed. (All his earnings and material goods prove worthless ultimately). (555)

जानत उसतति करत निंदिआ अंध मूड़ ऐसे अराधबे ते मोनि सुखदाई है ॥५५६॥

Jaanat Ousatati Karat Nindiaa Andh Moorha , Aisay Araadhabay Tay Moni Soukhadaaee Hai ॥556॥

Ignorant and foolish devotees call it His praise. Infact they are slandering the Lord. It is better to remain silent rather than say such praises. (556)

जैसे अहि ग्रसे बिख ब्यापत सगल अंग मंत्र कै बिखै बिकार सभ सु बिलात है ।

Jaisay Ahi Grasay Bikh Byaapat Sagal Anga , Mantr Kai Bikhai Bikaar Sabh Su Bilaat Hai ।

Just as snake-bite spreads poison in the whole body but with recitation of Garur jaap (a Mantra) all ill effects are destroyed.

तैसे माया मोह कै बिमोहत मगन मन गुर उपदेस माया मूल मुरझात है ॥५५७॥

Taisay Maayaa Moh Kai Bimohat Magan Mana , Gur Oupadays Maayaa Mool Murajhaat Hai ॥557॥

Similarly by listening to True Guru's word and meditating on it, all the effects of worldly vices and attachment are eliminated. (All the influence of worldly things (Maya) ends.) (557)

Similarly, the mind of a human being acquires higher spiritual state when it unites with God-like True Guru. But when separated from the True Guru, it wanders about and is destroyed (spiritually) by the five vices-lust, anger, avarice, attachment and pride. (582)

Just as walking on a path leads one to some place, similarly, searcher of spiritual knowledge takes refuge in the feet of the True Guru who initiates him to practicing Naam Simran that introduces him to his self and then he absorbs his consciousness in the holy feet of the Lord. (588)

Similarly, the seeker of Guru's words searches the jewel mine: The True Guru. Amongst many fake Gurus, there is a rare saintly person in whose holy feet the seeker absorbs his mind, obtains Naam and dyes himself in the Lord's divine hue. (589)

Just as before getting the cloth ready, someone picks cotton, someone ginns and spins it, while some other person prepares the cloth. But it cannot be known whose body will adorn the dress made of this cloth.

Just as rain falling outside the specific period (Nakshatra) according to the position of stars and planets is just falling of water drops, but when it rains during Swati Nakshatras, and a drop falls on the oyster in the sea, it becomes a pearl.

If the Lord could be reached by Yogic practices, then the Yogis would have hidden Him in their big tresses. And if he was reachable through consummation of materials, then materialistic people would have reached Him through their relishments.

Jaisay Tau Aoutaai Doodh Jaaman Jamaai Mada , Sanjam Sahat Ghrit Pragataai Maaneeai ।

Just as milk is hard boiled, cooled and a small quantity of coagulant is added to turn it into curd. This curd is churned and butter obtained. The butter is then turned into ghee (clarified butter).

Just as earth is dug up to dig a well and then a frame of the size and shape of the well is pushed in, whence a bucket tied with long rope is used to pull out water.

Similarly, I a cheat different from inside and outside swindle gullible Sikhs by singing to them the sacred hymns of the Guru. But those Sikhs enamoured by the sweetness of Gurbani and of very generous nature, don't even scold me despite them knowing that I am a fake Sikh. (611)
