गुरु दाता गुरु हिवै घरु गुरु दीपकु तिह लोइ ॥

Guru daataa guru hivai gharu guru deepaku tih loi ||

The Guru is the Giver; the Guru is the House of ice. The Guru is the Light of the three worlds.

Pahilai piaari lagaa tha(nn) dudhi ||

First, the baby loves mother's milk;

Fifth, he runs after food and drink;

Sixth, in his sexual desire, he does not respect social customs.

Seventh, he gathers wealth and dwells in his house;

Eighth, he becomes angry, and his body is consumed.

दस बालतणि बीस रवणि तीसा का सुंदरु कहावै ॥

Das baalata(nn)i bees rava(nn)i teesaa kaa sunddaru kahaavai ||

At the age of ten, he is a child; at twenty, a youth, and at thirty, he is called handsome.

चालीसी पुरु होइ पचासी पगु खिसै सठी के बोढेपा आवै ॥

Chaaleesee puru hoi pachaasee pagu khisai sathee ke bodhepaa aavai ||

At forty, he is full of life; at fifty, his foot slips, and at sixty, old age is upon him.

सतरि का मतिहीणु असीहां का विउहारु न पावै ॥

Satari kaa matihee(nn)u aseehaan kaa viuhaaru na paavai ||

At seventy, he loses his intellect, and at eighty, he cannot perform his duties.

ਨਵੈ ਕਾ ਸਿਹਜਾਸਣੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਪ ਬਲੁ ॥

नवै का सिहजासणी मूलि न जाणै अप बलु ॥

Navai kaa sihajaasa(nn)ee mooli na jaa(nn)ai ap balu ||

At ninety, he lies in his bed, and he cannot understand his weakness.

ढंढोलिमु ढूढिमु डिठु मै नानक जगु धूए का धवलहरु ॥३॥

Dhanddholimu dhoodhimu dithu mai naanak jagu dhooe kaa dhavalaharu ||3||

After seeking and searching for such a long time, O Nanak, I have seen that the world is just a mansion of smoke. ||3||

तूं करता पुरखु अगमु है आपि स्रिसटि उपाती ॥

Toonn karataa purakhu agammu hai aapi srisati upaatee ||

You, O Creator Lord, are Unfathomable. You Yourself created the Universe,

Rangg parangg upaarajanaa bahu bahu bidhi bhaatee ||

Its colors, qualities and varieties, in so many ways and forms.

तूं जाणहि जिनि उपाईऐ सभु खेलु तुमाती ॥

Toonn jaa(nn)ahi jini upaaeeai sabhu khelu tumaatee ||

You created it, and You alone understand it. It is all Your Play.

इकि आवहि इकि जाहि उठि बिनु नावै मरि जाती ॥

Iki aavahi iki jaahi uthi binu naavai mari jaatee ||

Some come, and some arise and depart; but without the Name, all are bound to die.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਿਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

गुरमुखि रंगि चलूलिआ रंगि हरि रंगि राती ॥

Guramukhi ranggi chalooliaa ranggi hari ranggi raatee ||

The Gurmukhs are imbued with the deep crimson color of the poppy; they are dyed in the color of the Lord's Love.

So sevahu sati niranjjano hari purakhu bidhaatee ||

So serve the True and Pure Lord, the Supremely Powerful Architect of Destiny.

Toonn aape aapi sujaa(nn)u hai vad purakhu vadaatee ||

You Yourself are All-knowing. O Lord, You are the Greatest of the Great!

जो मनि चिति तुधु धिआइदे मेरे सचिआ बलि बलि हउ तिन जाती ॥१॥

Jo mani chiti tudhu dhiaaide mere sachiaa bali bali hau tin jaatee ||1||

O my True Lord, I am a sacrifice, a humble sacrifice, to those who meditate on You within their conscious mind. ||1||

जीउ पाइ तनु साजिआ रखिआ बणत बणाइ ॥

Jeeu paai tanu saajiaa rakhiaa ba(nn)at ba(nn)aai ||

He placed the soul in the body which He had fashioned. He protects the Creation which He has created.

ਅਖੀ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

अखी देखै जिहवा बोलै कंनी सुरति समाइ ॥

Akhee dekhai jihavaa bolai kannee surati samaai ||

With their eyes, they see, and with their tongues, they speak; with their ears, they bring the mind to awareness.

ਪੈਰੀ ਚਲੈ ਹਥੀ ਕਰਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਪੈਨੈ ਖਾਇ ॥

पैरी चलै हथी करणा दिता पैनै खाइ ॥

Pairee chalai hathee kara(nn)aa ditaa painai khaai ||

With their feet, they walk, and with their hands, they work; they wear and eat whatever is given.

ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਧਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

जिनि रचि रचिआ तिसहि न जाणै अंधा अंधु कमाइ ॥

Jini rachi rachiaa tisahi na jaa(nn)ai anddhaa anddhu kamaai ||

They do not know the One who created the Creation. The blind fools do their dark deeds.

ਜਾ ਭਜੈ ਤਾ ਠੀਕਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾੜਤ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

जा भजै ता ठीकरु होवै घाड़त घड़ी न जाइ ॥

Jaa bhajai taa theekaru hovai ghaa(rr)at gha(rr)ee na jaai ||

When the pitcher of the body breaks and shatters into pieces, it cannot be re-created again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਵਿਣੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

नानक गुर बिनु नाहि पति पति विणु पारि न पाइ ॥१॥

Naanak gur binu naahi pati pati vi(nn)u paari na paai ||1||

O Nanak, without the Guru, there is no honor; without honor, no one is carried across. ||1||

देंदे थावहु दिता चंगा मनमुखि ऐसा जाणीऐ ॥

Dende thaavahu ditaa changgaa manamukhi aisaa jaa(nn)eeai ||

They prefer the gift, instead of the Giver; such is the way of the self-willed manmukhs.

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥

सुरति मति चतुराई ता की किआ करि आखि वखाणीऐ ॥

Surati mati chaturaaee taa kee kiaa kari aakhi vakhaa(nn)eeai ||

What can anyone say about their intelligence, their understanding or their cleverness?

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹਿ ਕੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

अंतरि बहि कै करम कमावै सो चहु कुंडी जाणीऐ ॥

Anttari bahi kai karam kamaavai so chahu kunddee jaa(nn)eeai ||

The deeds which one commits, while sitting in one's own home, are known far and wide, in the four directions.

ਜੋ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਰਮ ਨਾਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਪਿ ਕਮਾਣੈ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥

जो धरमु कमावै तिसु धरम नाउ होवै पापि कमाणै पापी जाणीऐ ॥

Jo dharamu kamaavai tisu dharam naau hovai paapi kamaa(nn)ai paapee jaa(nn)eeai ||

One who lives righteously is known as righteous; one who commits sins is known as a sinner.

Jicharu teree joti ticharu jotee vichi toonn bolahi vi(nn)u jotee koee kichhu karihu dikhaa siaa(nn)eeai ||

As long as Your Light is within the body, You speak through that Light. Without Your Light, who can do anything? Show me any such cleverness!

Tisanaa anddari agani hai nah tipatai bhukhaa tihaaiaa ||

The fire of desire is deep within; unsatisfied, people remain hungry and thirsty.

Sahasaa ihu sanssaaru hai mari jammai aaiaa jaaiaa ||

This world is an illusion; it dies and it is re-born-it comes and it goes in reincarnation.

Binu satigur mohu na tutaee sabhi thake karam kamaaiaa ||

Without the True Guru, emotional attachment is not broken. All have grown weary of performing empty rituals.

Those who follow the Guru's Teachings meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Filled with a joyful peace, they surrender to Your Will.

Ruhalaa tunddaa anddhulaa kiu gali lagai dhaai ||

How can the lame, armless and blind person run to embrace the Lord?

Bhai ke chara(nn) kar bhaav ke loi(nn) surati karei ||

Let the Fear of God be your feet, and let His Love be your hands; let His Understanding be your eyes.

Forever and ever, You are the only One; You set the play of duality in motion.

Haumai garabu upaai kai lobhu anttari janttaa paaiaa ||

You created egotism and arrogant pride, and You placed greed within our beings.

Jiu bhaavai tiu rakhu too sabh kare teraa karaaiaa ||

Keep me as it pleases Your Will; everyone acts as You cause them to act.

Ikanaa bakhasahi meli laihi guramatee tudhai laaiaa ||

Some are forgiven, and merge with You; through the Guru's Teachings, we are joined to You.

इकि खड़े करहि तेरी चाकरी विणु नावै होरु न भाइआ ॥

Iki kha(rr)e karahi teree chaakaree vi(nn)u naavai horu na bhaaiaa ||

Some stand and serve You; without the Name, nothing else pleases them.

Horu kaar vekaar hai iki sachee kaarai laaiaa ||

Any other task would be worthless to them-You have enjoined them to Your True Service.

पुतु कलतु कुट्मबु है इकि अलिपतु रहे जो तुधु भाइआ ॥

Putu kalatu kutambbu hai iki alipatu rahe jo tudhu bhaaiaa ||

In the midst of children, spouse and relations, some still remain detached; they are pleasing to Your Will.

Ohi anddarahu baaharahu niramale sachai naai samaaiaa ||3||

Inwardly and outwardly, they are pure, and they are absorbed in the True Name. ||3||

I may make a cave, in a mountain of gold, or in the water of the nether regions;

Kai vichi dharatee kai aakaasee uradhi rahaa siri bhaari ||

I may remain standing on my head, upside-down, on the earth or up in the sky;

Puru kari kaaiaa kapa(rr)u pahiraa dhovaa sadaa kaari ||

I may totally cover my body with clothes, and wash them continually;

Bagaa rataa peealaa kaalaa bedaa karee pukaar ||

I may shout out loud, the white, red, yellow and black Vedas;

होइ कुचीलु रहा मलु धारी दुरमति मति विकार ॥

Hoi kucheelu rahaa malu dhaaree duramati mati vikaar ||

I may even live in dirt and filth. And yet, all this is just a product of evil-mindedness, and intellectual corruption.

ना हउ ना मै ना हउ होवा नानक सबदु वीचारि ॥१॥

Naa hau naa mai naa hau hovaa naanak sabadu veechaari ||1||

I was not, I am not, and I will never be anything at all! O Nanak, I dwell only on the Word of the Shabad. ||1||

वसत्र पखालि पखाले काइआ आपे संजमि होवै ॥

Vasatr pakhaali pakhaale kaaiaa aape sanjjami hovai ||

They wash their clothes, and scrub their bodies, and try to practice self-discipline.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲਗੀ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

अंतरि मैलु लगी नही जाणै बाहरहु मलि मलि धोवै ॥

Anttari mailu lagee nahee jaa(nn)ai baaharahu mali mali dhovai ||

But they are not aware of the filth staining their inner being, while they try and try to wash off the outer dirt.

ਅੰਧਾ ਭੂਲਿ ਪਇਆ ਜਮ ਜਾਲੇ ॥

The blind go astray, caught by the noose of Death.

वसतु पराई अपुनी करि जानै हउमै विचि दुखु घाले ॥

Vasatu paraaee apunee kari jaanai haumai vichi dukhu ghaale ||

They see other people's property as their own, and in egotism, they suffer in pain.

Naanak guramukhi haumai tutai taa hari hari naamu dhiaavai ||

O Nanak, the egotism of the Gurmukhs is broken, and then, they meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

Naamu jape naamo aaraadhe naame sukhi samaavai ||2||

The fools try to account for their misdeeds, and argue uselessly.

Satigur hathi nibe(rr)u jhaga(rr)u chukaaiaa ||

The judgement is in the Hands of the True Guru, who puts an end to the argument.

जिस दै अंदरि सचु है सो सचा नामु मुखि सचु अलाए ॥

Jis dai anddari sachu hai so sachaa naamu mukhi sachu alaae ||

Those, within whom the Truth dwells, obtain the True Name; they speak only the Truth.

ओहु हरि मारगि आपि चलदा होरना नो हरि मारगि पाए ॥

Ohu hari maaragi aapi chaladaa horanaa no hari maaragi paae ||

They walk on the Lord's Path, and inspire others to walk on the Lord's Path as well.

ਜੇ ਅਗੈ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮਲੁ ਲਹੈ ਛਪੜਿ ਨਾਤੈ ਸਗਵੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

जे अगै तीरथु होइ ता मलु लहै छपड़ि नातै सगवी मलु लाए ॥

Je agai teerathu hoi taa malu lahai chhapa(rr)i naatai sagavee malu laae ||

Bathing in a pool of holy water, they are washed clean of filth. But, by bathing in a stagnant pond, they are contaminated with even more filth.

तीरथु पूरा सतिगुरू जो अनदिनु हरि हरि नामु धिआए ॥

Teerathu pooraa satiguroo jo anadinu hari hari naamu dhiaae ||

The True Guru is the Perfect Pool of Holy Water. Night and day, He meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ओहु आपि छुटा कुट्मब सिउ दे हरि हरि नामु सभ स्रिसटि छडाए ॥

Ohu aapi chhutaa kutambb siu de hari hari naamu sabh srisati chhadaae ||

He is saved, along with his family; bestowing the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, He saves the whole world.

जन नानक तिसु बलिहारणै जो आपि जपै अवरा नामु जपाए ॥२॥

Jan naanak tisu balihaara(nn)ai jo aapi japai avaraa naamu japaae ||2||

Servant Nanak is a sacrifice to one who himself chants the Naam, and inspires others to chant it as well. ||2||

Some pick and eat fruits and roots, and live in the wilderness.

Iki bhagavaa vesu kari phirahi jogee sanniaasaa ||

Some wander around wearing saffron robes, as Yogis and Sanyaasees.

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥

अंदरि त्रिसना बहुतु छादन भोजन की आसा ॥

Anddari trisanaa bahutu chhaadan bhojan kee aasaa ||

But there is still so much desire within them-they still yearn for clothes and food.

Birathaa janamu gavaai na girahee na udaasaa ||

They waste their lives uselessly; they are neither householders nor renunciates.

Jamakaalu sirahu na utarai tribidhi manasaa ||

The Messenger of Death hangs over their heads, and they cannot escape the three-phased desire.

गुरमती कालु न आवै नेड़ै जा होवै दासनि दासा ॥

Guramatee kaalu na aavai ne(rr)ai jaa hovai daasani daasaa ||

Death does not even approach those who follow the Guru's Teachings, and become the slaves of the Lord's slaves.

Sachaa sabadu sachu mani ghar hee maahi udaasaa ||

The True Word of the Shabad abides in their true minds; within the home of their own inner beings, they remain detached.

Naanak satiguru sevani aapa(nn)aa se aasaa te niraasaa ||5||

O Nanak, those who serve their True Guru, rise from desire to desirelessness. ||5||

Je ratu lagai kapa(rr)ai jaamaa hoi paleetu ||

If one's clothes are stained with blood, the garment becomes polluted.

Jo ratu peevahi maa(nn)asaa tin kiu niramalu cheetu ||

Those who suck the blood of human beings-how can their consciousness be pure?

Naanak naau khudaai kaa dili hachhai mukhi lehu ||

O Nanak, chant the Name of God, with heart-felt devotion.

Avari divaaje dunee ke jhoothe amal karehu ||1||

Everything else is just a pompous worldly show, and the practice of false deeds. ||1||

Jaa hau naahee taa kiaa aakhaa kihu naahee kiaa hovaa ||

Since I am no one, what can I say? Since I am nothing, what can I be?

Keetaa kara(nn)aa kahiaa kathanaa bhariaa bhari bhari dhovaan ||

As He created me, so I act. As He causes me to speak, so I speak. I am full and overflowing with sins-if only I could wash them away!

Aapi na bujhaa lok bujhaaee aisaa aagoo hovaan ||

I do not understand myself, and yet I try to teach others. Such is the guide I am!

नानक अंधा होइ कै दसे राहै सभसु मुहाए साथै ॥

Naanak anddhaa hoi kai dase raahai sabhasu muhaae saathai ||

O Nanak, the one who is blind shows others the way, and misleads all his companions.

अगै गइआ मुहे मुहि पाहि सु ऐसा आगू जापै ॥२॥

Agai gaiaa muhe muhi paahi su aisaa aagoo jaapai ||2||

But, going to the world hereafter, he shall be beaten and kicked in the face; then, it will be obvious, what sort of guide he was! ||2||

Maahaa rutee sabh toonn gha(rr)ee moorat veechaaraa ||

Through all the months and the seasons, the minutes and the hours, I dwell upon You, O Lord.

Toonn ga(nn)atai kinai na paaio sache alakh apaaraa ||

No one has attained You by clever calculations, O True, Unseen and Infinite Lord.

पड़िआ मूरखु आखीऐ जिसु लबु लोभु अहंकारा ॥

Pa(rr)iaa moorakhu aakheeai jisu labu lobhu ahankkaaraa ||

That scholar who is full of greed, arrogant pride and egotism, is known to be a fool.

ਨਾਉ ਪੜੀਐ ਨਾਉ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

Naau pa(rr)eeai naau bujheeai guramatee veechaaraa ||

So read the Name, and realize the Name, and contemplate the Guru's Teachings.

Guramatee naamu dhanu khatiaa bhagatee bhare bhanddaaraa ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, I have earned the wealth of the Naam; I possess the storehouses, overflowing with devotion to the Lord.

Niramalu naamu manniaa dari sachai sachiaaraa ||

Believing in the Immaculate Naam, one is hailed as true, in the True Court of the Lord.

Jis daa jeeu paraa(nn)u hai anttari joti apaaraa ||

The Divine Light of the Infinite Lord, who owns the soul and the breath of life, is deep within the inner being.

Sachaa saahu iku toonn horu jagatu va(nn)ajaaraa ||6||

Mihar maseeti sidaku musalaa haku halaalu kuraa(nn)u ||

Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Koran.

Saram sunnati seelu rojaa hohu musalamaa(nn)u ||

Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.

Kara(nn)ee kaabaa sachu peeru kalamaa karam nivaaj ||

Let good conduct be your Kaabaa, Truth your spiritual guide, and the karma of good deeds your prayer and chant.

Haku paraaiaa naanakaa usu sooar usu gaai ||

: To take what rightfully belongs to another, is like a Muslim eating pork, or a Hindu eating beef.

Guru peeru haamaa taa bhare jaa muradaaru na khaai ||

Our Guru, our Spiritual Guide, stands by us, if we do not eat those carcasses.

Galee bhisati na jaaeeai chhutai sachu kamaai ||

By mere talk, people do not earn passage to Heaven. Salvation comes only from the practice of Truth.

Maara(nn) paahi haraam mahi hoi halaalu na jaai ||

By adding spices to forbidden foods, they are not made acceptable.

Panjji nivaajaa vakhat panjji panjjaa panjje naau ||

There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names.

Let the fourth be good will to all, and the fifth the praise of the Lord.

Kara(nn)ee kalamaa aakhi kai taa musalamaa(nn)u sadaai ||

Repeat the prayer of good deeds, and then, you may call yourself a Muslim.

Iki ratan padaarath va(nn)ajade iki kachai de vaapaaraa ||

Some trade in priceless jewels, while others deal in mere glass.

Satiguri tuthai paaeeani anddari ratan bhanddaaraa ||

When the True Guru is pleased, we find the treasure of the jewel, deep within the self.

विणु गुर किनै न लधिआ अंधे भउकि मुए कूड़िआरा ॥

Vi(nn)u gur kinai na ladhiaa anddhe bhauki mue koo(rr)iaaraa ||

Without the Guru, no one has found this treasure. The blind and the false have died in their endless wanderings.

Manamukh doojai pachi mue naa boojhahi veechaaraa ||

The self-willed manmukhs putrefy and die in duality. They do not understand contemplative meditation.

इकसु बाझहु दूजा को नही किसु अगै करहि पुकारा ॥

Ikasu baajhahu doojaa ko nahee kisu agai karahi pukaaraa ||

Without the One Lord, there is no other at all. Unto whom should they complain?

Iki niradhan sadaa bhaukade ikanaa bhare tujaaraa ||

Some are destitute, and wander around endlessly, while others have storehouses of wealth.

विणु नावै होरु धनु नाही होरु बिखिआ सभु छारा ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai horu dhanu naahee horu bikhiaa sabhu chhaaraa ||

Without God's Name, there is no other wealth. Everything else is just poison and ashes.

नानक आपि कराए करे आपि हुकमि सवारणहारा ॥७॥

Naanak aapi karaae kare aapi hukami savaara(nn)ahaaraa ||7||

O Nanak, the Lord Himself acts, and causes others to act; by the Hukam of His Command, we are embellished and exalted. ||7||

मुसलमाणु कहावणु मुसकलु जा होइ ता मुसलमाणु कहावै ॥

Musalamaa(nn)u kahaava(nn)u musakalu jaa hoi taa musalamaa(nn)u kahaavai ||

It is difficult to be called a Muslim; if one is truly a Muslim, then he may be called one.

अवलि अउलि दीनु करि मिठा मसकल माना मालु मुसावै ॥

Avali auli deenu kari mithaa masakal maanaa maalu musaavai ||

First, let him savor the religion of the Prophet as sweet; then, let his pride of his possessions be scraped away.

होइ मुसलिमु दीन मुहाणै मरण जीवण का भरमु चुकावै ॥

Hoi musalimu deen muhaa(nn)ai mara(nn) jeeva(nn) kaa bharamu chukaavai ||

Becoming a true Muslim, a disciple of the faith of Mohammed, let him put aside the delusion of death and life.

रब की रजाइ मंने सिर उपरि करता मंने आपु गवावै ॥

Rab kee rajaai manne sir upari karataa manne aapu gavaavai ||

As he submits to God's Will, and surrenders to the Creator, he is rid of selfishness and conceit.

तउ नानक सरब जीआ मिहरमति होइ त मुसलमाणु कहावै ॥१॥

Tau naanak sarab jeeaa miharammati hoi ta musalamaa(nn)u kahaavai ||1||

And when, O Nanak, he is merciful to all beings, only then shall he be called a Muslim. ||1||

परहरि काम क्रोधु झूठु निंदा तजि माइआ अहंकारु चुकावै ॥

Parahari kaam krodhu jhoothu ninddaa taji maaiaa ahankkaaru chukaavai ||

Renounce sexual desire, anger, falsehood and slander; forsake Maya and eliminate egotistical pride.

ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੈ ਤਾ ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

तजि कामु कामिनी मोहु तजै ता अंजन माहि निरंजनु पावै ॥

Taji kaamu kaaminee mohu tajai taa anjjan maahi niranjjanu paavai ||

Renounce sexual desire and promiscuity, and give up emotional attachment. Only then shall you obtain the Immaculate Lord amidst the darkness of the world.

तजि मानु अभिमानु प्रीति सुत दारा तजि पिआस आस राम लिव लावै ॥

Taji maanu abhimaanu preeti sut daaraa taji piaas aas raam liv laavai ||

Renounce selfishness, conceit and arrogant pride, and your love for your children and spouse. Abandon your thirsty hopes and desires, and embrace love for the Lord.

नानक साचा मनि वसै साच सबदि हरि नामि समावै ॥२॥

Naanak saachaa mani vasai saach sabadi hari naami samaavai ||2||

O Nanak, the True One shall come to dwell in your mind. Through the True Word of the Shabad, you shall be absorbed in the Name of the Lord. ||2||

Raaje rayati sikadaar koi na rahaseeo ||

Neither the kings, nor their subjects, nor the leaders shall remain.

ਹਟ ਪਟਣ ਬਾਜਾਰ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਢਹਸੀਓ ॥

Hat pata(nn) baajaar hukamee dhahaseeo ||

The shops, the cities and the streets shall eventually disintegrate, by the Hukam of the Lord's Command.

Pake bankk duaar moorakhu jaa(nn)ai aapa(nn)e ||

Those solid and beautiful mansions-the fools think that they belong to them.

ਦਰਬਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਰੀਤੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਣੇ ॥

Darabi bhare bhanddaar reete iki kha(nn)e ||

The treasure-houses, filled with wealth, shall be emptied out in an instant.

ਤਾਜੀ ਰਥ ਤੁਖਾਰ ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਖਰੇ ॥

The horses, chariots, camels and elephants, with all their decorations;

the gardens, lands, houses, where are all those things, which they believed to be their own,

Tambboo palanggh nivaar saraaiche laalatee ||

including tents, soft beds and satin pavilions?

Naanak sach daataaru sinaakhatu kudaratee ||8||

O Nanak, the True One is the Giver of all; He is revealed through His All-powerful Creative Nature. ||8||

Nadeeaa hovahi dhe(nn)avaa summm hovahi dudhu gheeu ||

If the rivers became cows, giving milk, and the spring water became milk and ghee;

Sagalee dharatee sakar hovai khusee kare nit jeeu ||

If all the earth became sugar, to continually excite the mind;

Parabatu suinaa rupaa hovai heere laal ja(rr)aau ||

If the mountains became gold and silver, studded with gems and jewels

Bhaar athaarah mevaa hovai garu(rr)aa hoi suaau ||

If all the eighteen loads of vegetation became fruits and the growing grass became sweet rice;

चंदु सूरजु दुइ फिरदे रखीअहि निहचलु होवै थाउ ॥

Chanddu sooraju dui phirade rakheeahi nihachalu hovai thaau ||

if I were able to stop the sun and the moon in their orbits and hold them perfectly steady -

If my body were afflicted with pain, under the evil influence of unlucky stars;

And if the blood-sucking kings were to hold power over me

If fire and ice were my clothes, and the wind was my food;

सुरगै दीआ मोहणीआ इसतरीआ होवनि नानक सभो जाउ ॥

Suragai deeaa moha(nn)eeaa isatareeaa hovani naanak sabho jaau ||

And even if the enticing heavenly beauties were my wives, O Nanak-all this shall pass away!

The foolish demon, who does evil deeds, does not know his Lord and Master.

Call him a mad-man, if he does not understand himself.

The strife of this world is evil; these struggles are consuming it.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਪਚੀਐ ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai vekaari bharame pacheeai ||

Without the Lord's Name, life is worthless. Through doubt, the people are being destroyed.

ਰਾਹ ਦੋਵੈ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਝਸੀ ॥

One who recognizes that all spiritual paths lead to the One shall be emancipated.

One who speaks lies shall fall into hell and burn.

Sabh duneeaa subahaanu sachi samaaeeai ||

In all the world, the most blessed and sanctified are those who remain absorbed in Truth.

One who eliminates selfishness and conceit is redeemed in the Court of the Lord. ||9||

They alone are truly alive, whose minds are filled with the Lord.

Everything they eat is impure.

Intoxicated with power and thrilled with wealth,

ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤਾ ਨਚੈ ਨੰਗੁ ॥

They delight in their pleasures, and dance about shamelessly.

किआ मेवा किआ घिउ गुड़ु मिठा किआ मैदा किआ मासु ॥

Kiaa mevaa kiaa ghiu gu(rr)u mithaa kiaa maidaa kiaa maasu ||

What good are fruits, what good is ghee, sweet jaggery, what good is flour, and what good is meat?

Kiaa kapa(rr)u kiaa sej sukhaalee keejahi bhog bilaas ||

What good are clothes, and what good is a soft bed, to enjoy pleasures and sensual delights?

Kiaa lasakar kiaa neb khavaasee aavai mahalee vaasu ||

What good is an army, and what good are soldiers, servants and mansions to live in?

Naanak sache naam vi(nn)u sabhe tol vi(nn)aasu ||2||

O Nanak, without the True Name, all this paraphernalia shall disappear. ||2||

Jaatee dai kiaa hathi sachu parakheeai ||

What good is social class and status? Truthfulness is measured within.

ਮਹੁਰਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਹਥਿ ਮਰੀਐ ਚਖੀਐ ॥

Mahuraa hovai hathi mareeai chakheeai ||

Pride in one's status is like poison-holding it in your hand and eating it, you shall die.

Sache kee sirakaar jugu jugu jaa(nn)eeai ||

The True Lord's Sovereign Rule is known throughout the ages.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਿਰਦਾਰੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣੀਐ ॥

Hukamu manne siradaaru dari deebaa(nn)eeai ||

One who respects the Hukam of the Lord's Command is honored and respected in the Court of the Lord.

By the Order of our Lord and Master, we have been brought into this world.

The Drummer, the Guru, has announced the Lord's meditation, through the Word of the Shabad.

Some have mounted their horses in response, and others are saddling up.

Some have tied up their bridles, and others have already ridden off. ||10||

जा पका ता कटिआ रही सु पलरि वाड़ि ॥

Jaa pakaa taa katiaa rahee su palari vaa(rr)i ||

When the crop is ripe, then it is cut down; only the stalks are left standing.

ਸਣੁ ਕੀਸਾਰਾ ਚਿਥਿਆ ਕਣੁ ਲਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਝਾੜਿ ॥

सणु कीसारा चिथिआ कणु लइआ तनु झाड़ि ॥

Sa(nn)u keesaaraa chithiaa ka(nn)u laiaa tanu jhaa(rr)i ||

The corn on the cob is put into the thresher, and the kernels are separated from the cobs.

ਦੁਇ ਪੁੜ ਚਕੀ ਜੋੜਿ ਕੈ ਪੀਸਣ ਆਇ ਬਹਿਠੁ ॥

दुइ पुड़ चकी जोड़ि कै पीसण आइ बहिठु ॥

Dui pu(rr) chakee jo(rr)i kai peesa(nn) aai bahithu ||

Placing the kernels between the two mill-stones, people sit and grind the corn.

ਜੋ ਦਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੁ ਉਬਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਜਬੁ ਡਿਠੁ ॥੧॥

जो दरि रहे सु उबरे नानक अजबु डिठु ॥१॥

Jo dari rahe su ubare naanak ajabu dithu ||1||

Those kernels which stick to the central axle are spared-Nanak has seen this wonderful vision! ||1||

वेखु जि मिठा कटिआ कटि कुटि बधा पाइ ॥

Vekhu ji mithaa katiaa kati kuti badhaa paai ||

Look, and see how the sugar-cane is cut down. After cutting away its branches, its feet are bound together into bundles,

ਖੁੰਢਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਲ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

खुंढा अंदरि रखि कै देनि सु मल सजाइ ॥

Khunddhaa anddari rakhi kai deni su mal sajaai ||

And then, it is placed between the wooden rollers and crushed.

ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਟਟਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਪੈ ਤੈ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥

रसु कसु टटरि पाईऐ तपै तै विललाइ ॥

Rasu kasu tatari paaeeai tapai tai vilalaai ||

What punishment is inflicted upon it! Its juice is extracted and placed in the cauldron; as it is heated, it groans and cries out.

Bhee so phogu samaaleeai dichai agi jaalaai ||

And then, the crushed cane is collected and burnt in the fire below.

Nanak: come, people, and see how the sweet sugar-cane is treated! ||2||

Some do not think of death; they entertain great hopes.

Mari mari jammahi nit kisai na keriaa ||

They die, and are re-born, and die, over and over again. They are of no use at all!

In their conscious minds, they call themselves good.

ਜਮਰਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੇਰਿਆ ॥

Jamaraajai nit nit manamukh heriaa ||

The King of the Angels of Death hunts down those self-willed manmukhs, over and over again.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੂਣ ਹਾਰਾਮ ਕਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

Manamukh loo(nn) haaraam kiaa na jaa(nn)iaa ||

The manmukhs are false to their own selves; they feel no gratitude for what they have been given.

ਬਧੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਲਾਮ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਭਾਣਿਆ ॥

Those who merely perform rituals of worship are not pleasing to their Lord and Master.

Those who attain the True Lord and chant His Name are pleasing to the Lord.

Karasani takhati salaamu likhiaa paavasee ||11||

They worship the Lord and bow at His Throne. They fulfill their pre-ordained destiny. ||11||

What can deep water do to a fish? What can the vast sky do to a bird?

Pathar paalaa kiaa kare khusare kiaa ghar vaasu ||

What can cold do to a stone? What is married life to a eunuch?

Kute chanddanu laaeeai bhee so kutee dhaatu ||

You may apply sandalwood oil to a dog, but he will still be a dog.

Bolaa je samajhaaeeai pa(rr)eeahi simmmriti paath ||

You may try to teach a deaf person by reading the Simritees to him, but how will he learn?

ਅੰਧਾ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਲਹਿ ਪਚਾਸ ॥

Anddhaa chaana(nn)i rakheeai deeve balahi pachaas ||

You may place a light before a blind man and burn fifty lamps, but how will he see?

ਚਉਣੇ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਵੈ ਘਾਸੁ ॥

Chau(nn)e suinaa paaeeai chu(nn)i chu(nn)i khaavai ghaasu ||

You may place gold before a herd of cattle, but they will pick out the grass to eat.

ਲੋਹਾ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਢਹੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਪਾਸ ॥

Lohaa maara(nn)i paaeeai dhahai na hoi kapaas ||

You may add flux to iron and melt it, but it will not become soft like cotton.

Naanak moorakh ehi gu(nn) bole sadaa vi(nn)aasu ||1||

O Nanak, this is the nature of a fool-everything he speaks is useless and wasted. ||1||

When pieces of bronze or gold or iron break,

ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥

The metal-smith welds them together again in the fire, and the bond is established.

ਪੁਤੀਂ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥

Their children may bring them back together in the world, and the bond is established.

ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

When the king makes a demand, and it is met, the bond is established.

When the hungry man eats, he is satisfied, and the bond is established.

ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ ॥

In the famine, the rain fills the streams to overflowing, and the bond is established.

ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ॥

There is a bond between love and words of sweetness.

ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

When one speaks the Truth, a bond is established with the Holy Scriptures.

Through goodness and truth, the dead establish a bond with the living.

ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.

The fool establishes his bonds only when he is slapped in the face.

Aape kudarati saaji kai aape kare beechaaru ||

He Himself created and adorned the Universe, and He Himself contemplates it.

Iki khote iki khare aape parakha(nn)ahaaru ||

Some are counterfeit, and some are genuine. He Himself is the Appraiser.

खरे खजानै पाईअहि खोटे सटीअहि बाहर वारि ॥

Khare khajaanai paaeeahi khote sateeahi baahar vaari ||

The genuine are placed in His Treasury, while the counterfeit are thrown away.

खोटे सची दरगह सुटीअहि किसु आगै करहि पुकार ॥

Khote sachee daragah suteeahi kisu aagai karahi pukaar ||

The counterfeit are thrown out of the True Court-unto whom should they complain?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਛੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

सतिगुर पिछै भजि पवहि एहा करणी सारु ॥

Satigur pichhai bhaji pavahi ehaa kara(nn)ee saaru ||

They should worship and follow the True Guru-this is the lifestyle of excellence.

सतिगुरु खोटिअहु खरे करे सबदि सवारणहारु ॥

Satiguru khotiahu khare kare sabadi savaara(nn)ahaaru ||

The True Guru converts the counterfeit into genuine; through the Word of the Shabad, He embellishes and exalts us.

सची दरगह मंनीअनि गुर कै प्रेम पिआरि ॥

Sachee daragah manneeani gur kai prem piaari ||

Those who have enshrined love and affection for the Guru, are honored in the True Court.

ਗਣਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥

गणत तिना दी को किआ करे जो आपि बखसे करतारि ॥१२॥

Ga(nn)at tinaa dee ko kiaa kare jo aapi bakhase karataari ||12||

Who can estimate the value of those who have been forgiven by the Creator Lord Himself? ||12||

All the spiritual teachers, their disciples and the rulers of the world shall be buried under the ground.

The emperors shall also pass away; God alone is Eternal.

Our sustenance is not in the hands of any person.

The birds have no money in their pockets.
