ਸਾ ਧਨ ਰੰਡ ਨ ਬੈਸਈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

सा धन रंड न बैसई जे सतिगुर माहि समाइ ॥

Saa dhan randd na baisaee je satigur maahi samaai ||

That bride, who is absorbed into the True Guru, shall never become a widow.

ਪਿਰੁ ਰੀਸਾਲੂ ਨਉਤਨੋ ਸਾਚਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

पिरु रीसालू नउतनो साचउ मरै न जाइ ॥

Piru reesaaloo nautano saachau marai na jaai ||

Her Husband Lord is Beautiful; His Body is forever fresh and new. The True One does not die, and shall not go.

ਨਿਤ ਰਵੈ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੪॥

नित रवै सोहागणी साची नदरि रजाइ ॥४॥

Nit ravai sohaaga(nn)ee saachee nadari rajaai ||4||

He continually enjoys His happy soul-bride; He casts His Gracious Glance of Truth upon her, and she abides in His Will. ||4||


ਸਾਚੁ ਧੜੀ ਧਨ ਮਾਡੀਐ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

साचु धड़ी धन माडीऐ कापड़ु प्रेम सीगारु ॥

Saachu dha(rr)ee dhan maadeeai kaapa(rr)u prem seegaaru ||

The bride braids her hair with Truth; her clothes are decorated with His Love.

ਚੰਦਨੁ ਚੀਤਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਦਸਵਾ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

चंदनु चीति वसाइआ मंदरु दसवा दुआरु ॥

Chanddanu cheeti vasaaiaa manddaru dasavaa duaaru ||

Like the essence of sandalwood, He permeates her consciousness, and the Temple of the Tenth Gate is opened.

ਦੀਪਕੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਗਾਸਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਹਾਰੁ ॥੫॥

दीपकु सबदि विगासिआ राम नामु उर हारु ॥५॥

Deepaku sabadi vigaasiaa raam naamu ur haaru ||5||

The lamp of the Shabad is lit, and the Name of the Lord is her necklace. ||5||


ਨਾਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਮਣੀ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

नारी अंदरि सोहणी मसतकि मणी पिआरु ॥

Naaree anddari soha(nn)ee masataki ma(nn)ee piaaru ||

She is the most beautiful among women; upon her forehead she wears the Jewel of the Lord's Love.

ਸੋਭਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

सोभा सुरति सुहावणी साचै प्रेमि अपार ॥

Sobhaa surati suhaava(nn)ee saachai premi apaar ||

Her glory and her wisdom are magnificent; her love for the Infinite Lord is True.

ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥੬॥

बिनु पिर पुरखु न जाणई साचे गुर कै हेति पिआरि ॥६॥

Binu pir purakhu na jaa(nn)aee saache gur kai heti piaari ||6||

Other than her Beloved Lord, she knows no man. She enshrines love for the True Guru. ||6||


ਨਿਸਿ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀ ਸੁਤੀਏ ਕਿਉ ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥

निसि अंधिआरी सुतीए किउ पिर बिनु रैणि विहाइ ॥

Nisi anddhiaaree suteee kiu pir binu rai(nn)i vihaai ||

Asleep in the darkness of the night, how shall she pass her life-night without her Husband?

ਅੰਕੁ ਜਲਉ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਲੀਅਉ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

अंकु जलउ तनु जालीअउ मनु धनु जलि बलि जाइ ॥

Ankku jalau tanu jaaleeau manu dhanu jali bali jaai ||

Her limbs shall burn, her body shall burn, and her mind and wealth shall burn as well.

ਜਾ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਿ ਨ ਰਾਵੀਆ ਤਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥

जा धन कंति न रावीआ ता बिरथा जोबनु जाइ ॥७॥

Jaa dhan kantti na raaveeaa taa birathaa jobanu jaai ||7||

When the Husband does not enjoy His bride, then her youth passes away in vain. ||7||


ਸੇਜੈ ਕੰਤ ਮਹੇਲੜੀ ਸੂਤੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

सेजै कंत महेलड़ी सूती बूझ न पाइ ॥

Sejai kantt mahela(rr)ee sootee boojh na paai ||

The Husband is on the Bed, but the bride is asleep, and so she does not come to know Him.

ਹਉ ਸੁਤੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਜਾਗਣਾ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਪੂਛਉ ਜਾਇ ॥

हउ सुती पिरु जागणा किस कउ पूछउ जाइ ॥

Hau sutee piru jaaga(nn)aa kis kau poochhau jaai ||

While I am asleep, my Husband Lord is awake. Where can I go for advice?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਭੈ ਵਸੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਸਖਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥

सतिगुरि मेली भै वसी नानक प्रेमु सखाइ ॥८॥२॥

Satiguri melee bhai vasee naanak premu sakhaai ||8||2||

The True Guru has led me to meet Him, and now I dwell in the Fear of God. O Nanak, His Love is always with me. ||8||2||

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣ ਆਪੇ ਕਥੈ ਆਪੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

आपे गुण आपे कथै आपे सुणि वीचारु ॥

Aape gu(nn) aape kathai aape su(nn)i veechaaru ||

O Lord, You are Your Own Glorious Praise. You Yourself speak it; You Yourself hear it and contemplate it.

ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਰਖਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਮੋਲੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

आपे रतनु परखि तूं आपे मोलु अपारु ॥

Aape ratanu parakhi toonn aape molu apaaru ||

You Yourself are the Jewel, and You are the Appraiser. You Yourself are of Infinite Value.

ਸਾਚਉ ਮਾਨੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

साचउ मानु महतु तूं आपे देवणहारु ॥१॥

Saachau maanu mahatu toonn aape deva(nn)ahaaru ||1||

O True Lord, You are Honor and Glory; You Yourself are the Giver. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

हरि जीउ तूं करता करतारु ॥

Hari jeeu toonn karataa karataaru ||

O Dear Lord, You are the Creator and the Cause.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखु तूं हरि नामु मिलै आचारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhu toonn hari naamu milai aachaaru ||1|| rahaau ||

If it is Your Will, please save and protect me; please bless me with the lifestyle of the Lord's Name. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਪੇ ਹੀਰਾ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਆਪੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਜੀਠ ॥

आपे हीरा निरमला आपे रंगु मजीठ ॥

Aape heeraa niramalaa aape ranggu majeeth ||

You Yourself are the flawless diamond; You Yourself are the deep crimson color.

ਆਪੇ ਮੋਤੀ ਊਜਲੋ ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤ ਬਸੀਠੁ ॥

आपे मोती ऊजलो आपे भगत बसीठु ॥

Aape motee ujalo aape bhagat baseethu ||

You Yourself are the perfect pearl; You Yourself are the devotee and the priest.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਡੀਠੁ ਅਡੀਠੁ ॥੨॥

गुर कै सबदि सलाहणा घटि घटि डीठु अडीठु ॥२॥

Gur kai sabadi salaaha(nn)aa ghati ghati deethu adeethu ||2||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, You are praised. In each and every heart, the Unseen is seen. ||2||


ਆਪੇ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਆਪੇ ਪਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

आपे सागरु बोहिथा आपे पारु अपारु ॥

Aape saagaru bohithaa aape paaru apaaru ||

You Yourself are the ocean and the boat. You Yourself are this shore, and the one beyond.

ਸਾਚੀ ਵਾਟ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

साची वाट सुजाणु तूं सबदि लघावणहारु ॥

Saachee vaat sujaa(nn)u toonn sabadi laghaava(nn)ahaaru ||

O All-knowing Lord, You are the True Way. The Shabad is the Navigator to ferry us across.

ਨਿਡਰਿਆ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

निडरिआ डरु जाणीऐ बाझु गुरू गुबारु ॥३॥

Nidariaa daru jaa(nn)eeai baajhu guroo gubaaru ||3||

One who does not fear God shall live in fear; without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness. ||3||


ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੇਤੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

असथिरु करता देखीऐ होरु केती आवै जाइ ॥

Asathiru karataa dekheeai horu ketee aavai jaai ||

The Creator alone is seen to be Eternal; all others come and go.

ਆਪੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਬੰਧੀ ਧੰਧੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

आपे निरमलु एकु तूं होर बंधी धंधै पाइ ॥

Aape niramalu eku toonn hor banddhee dhanddhai paai ||

Only You, Lord, are Immaculate and Pure. All others are bound up in worldly pursuits.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੪॥

गुरि राखे से उबरे साचे सिउ लिव लाइ ॥४॥

Guri raakhe se ubare saache siu liv laai ||4||

Those who are protected by the Guru are saved. They are lovingly attuned to the True Lord. ||4||


ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ॥

हरि जीउ सबदि पछाणीऐ साचि रते गुर वाकि ॥

Hari jeeu sabadi pachhaa(nn)eeai saachi rate gur vaaki ||

Through the Shabad, they recognize the Dear Lord; through the Guru's Word, they are attuned to Truth.

ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਜਿਸੁ ਓਤਾਕੁ ॥

तितु तनि मैलु न लगई सच घरि जिसु ओताकु ॥

Titu tani mailu na lagaee sach ghari jisu otaaku ||

Filth does not stick to the body of one who has secured a dwelling in his True Home.

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਕੁ ॥੫॥

नदरि करे सचु पाईऐ बिनु नावै किआ साकु ॥५॥

Nadari kare sachu paaeeai binu naavai kiaa saaku ||5||

When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, we obtain the True Name. Without the Name, who are our relatives? ||5||


ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸੇ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

जिनी सचु पछाणिआ से सुखीए जुग चारि ॥

Jinee sachu pachhaa(nn)iaa se sukheee jug chaari ||

Those who have realized the Truth are at peace throughout the four ages.

ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

हउमै त्रिसना मारि कै सचु रखिआ उर धारि ॥

Haumai trisanaa maari kai sachu rakhiaa ur dhaari ||

Subduing their egotism and desires, they keep the True Name enshrined in their hearts.

ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੬॥

जग महि लाहा एकु नामु पाईऐ गुर वीचारि ॥६॥

Jag mahi laahaa eku naamu paaeeai gur veechaari ||6||

In this world, the only real profit is the Name of the One Lord; it is earned by contemplating the Guru. ||6||


ਸਾਚਉ ਵਖਰੁ ਲਾਦੀਐ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

साचउ वखरु लादीऐ लाभु सदा सचु रासि ॥

Saachau vakharu laadeeai laabhu sadaa sachu raasi ||

Loading the Merchandise of the True Name, you shall gather in your profits forever with the Capital of Truth.

ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਈ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

साची दरगह बैसई भगति सची अरदासि ॥

Saachee daragah baisaee bhagati sachee aradaasi ||

In the Court of the True One, you shall sit in truthful devotion and prayer.

ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਿਬੜੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿ ॥੭॥

पति सिउ लेखा निबड़ै राम नामु परगासि ॥७॥

Pati siu lekhaa niba(rr)ai raam naamu paragaasi ||7||

Your account shall be settled with honor, in the Radiant Light of the Name of the Lord. ||7||


ਊਚਾ ਊਚਉ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

ऊचा ऊचउ आखीऐ कहउ न देखिआ जाइ ॥

Uchaa uchau aakheeai kahau na dekhiaa jaai ||

The Lord is said to be the Highest of the High; no one can perceive Him.

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਇ ॥

जह देखा तह एकु तूं सतिगुरि दीआ दिखाइ ॥

Jah dekhaa tah eku toonn satiguri deeaa dikhaai ||

Wherever I look, I see only You. The True Guru has inspired me to see You.

ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੮॥੩॥

जोति निरंतरि जाणीऐ नानक सहजि सुभाइ ॥८॥३॥

Joti niranttari jaa(nn)eeai naanak sahaji subhaai ||8||3||

The Divine Light within is revealed, O Nanak, through this intuitive understanding. ||8||3||

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਮਛੁਲੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਰੁ ਖਾਰਾ ਅਸਗਾਹੁ ॥

मछुली जालु न जाणिआ सरु खारा असगाहु ॥

Machhulee jaalu na jaa(nn)iaa saru khaaraa asagaahu ||

The fish did not notice the net in the deep and salty sea.

ਅਤਿ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥

अति सिआणी सोहणी किउ कीतो वेसाहु ॥

Ati siaa(nn)ee soha(nn)ee kiu keeto vesaahu ||

It was so clever and beautiful, but why was it so confident?

ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਕੜੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਟਲੈ ਸਿਰਾਹੁ ॥੧॥

कीते कारणि पाकड़ी कालु न टलै सिराहु ॥१॥

Keete kaara(nn)i paaka(rr)ee kaalu na talai siraahu ||1||

By its actions it was caught, and now death cannot be turned away from its head. ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਿਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

भाई रे इउ सिरि जाणहु कालु ॥

Bhaaee re iu siri jaa(nn)ahu kaalu ||

O Siblings of Destiny, just like this, see death hovering over your own heads!

ਜਿਉ ਮਛੀ ਤਿਉ ਮਾਣਸਾ ਪਵੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिउ मछी तिउ माणसा पवै अचिंता जालु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jiu machhee tiu maa(nn)asaa pavai achinttaa jaalu ||1|| rahaau ||

People are just like this fish; unaware, the noose of death descends upon them. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧੋ ਕਾਲ ਕੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥

सभु जगु बाधो काल को बिनु गुर कालु अफारु ॥

Sabhu jagu baadho kaal ko binu gur kaalu aphaaru ||

The whole world is bound by death; without the Guru, death cannot be avoided.

ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

सचि रते से उबरे दुबिधा छोडि विकार ॥

Sachi rate se ubare dubidhaa chhodi vikaar ||

Those who are attuned to Truth are saved; they renounce duality and corruption.

ਹਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥੨॥

हउ तिन कै बलिहारणै दरि सचै सचिआर ॥२॥

Hau tin kai balihaara(nn)ai dari sachai sachiaar ||2||

I am a sacrifice to those who are found to be Truthful in the True Court. ||2||


ਸੀਚਾਨੇ ਜਿਉ ਪੰਖੀਆ ਜਾਲੀ ਬਧਿਕ ਹਾਥਿ ॥

सीचाने जिउ पंखीआ जाली बधिक हाथि ॥

Seechaane jiu pankkheeaa jaalee badhik haathi ||

Think of the hawk preying on the birds, and the net in the hands of the hunter.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਚੋਗੈ ਸਾਥਿ ॥

गुरि राखे से उबरे होरि फाथे चोगै साथि ॥

Guri raakhe se ubare hori phaathe chogai saathi ||

Those who are protected by the Guru are saved; the others are caught by the bait.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਚੁਣਿ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਾਥਿ ॥੩॥

बिनु नावै चुणि सुटीअहि कोइ न संगी साथि ॥३॥

Binu naavai chu(nn)i suteeahi koi na sanggee saathi ||3||

Without the Name, they are picked up and thrown away; they have no friends or companions. ||3||


ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ॥

सचो सचा आखीऐ सचे सचा थानु ॥

Sacho sachaa aakheeai sache sachaa thaanu ||

God is said to be the Truest of the True; His Place is the Truest of the True.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥

जिनी सचा मंनिआ तिन मनि सचु धिआनु ॥

Jinee sachaa manniaa tin mani sachu dhiaanu ||

Those who obey the True One-their minds abide in true meditation.

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸੂਚੇ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਿਨਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੪॥

मनि मुखि सूचे जाणीअहि गुरमुखि जिना गिआनु ॥४॥

Mani mukhi sooche jaa(nn)eeahi guramukhi jinaa giaanu ||4||

Those who become Gurmukh, and obtain spiritual wisdom-their minds and mouths are known to be pure. ||4||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

सतिगुर अगै अरदासि करि साजनु देइ मिलाइ ॥

Satigur agai aradaasi kari saajanu dei milaai ||

Offer your most sincere prayers to the True Guru, so that He may unite you with your Best Friend.

ਸਾਜਨਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

साजनि मिलिऐ सुखु पाइआ जमदूत मुए बिखु खाइ ॥

Saajani miliai sukhu paaiaa jamadoot mue bikhu khaai ||

Meeting your Best Friend, you shall find peace; the Messenger of Death shall take poison and die.

ਨਾਵੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹਉ ਵਸਾਂ ਨਾਉ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥੫॥

नावै अंदरि हउ वसां नाउ वसै मनि आइ ॥५॥

Naavai anddari hau vasaan naau vasai mani aai ||5||

I dwell deep within the Name; the Name has come to dwell within my mind. ||5||


ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

बाझु गुरू गुबारु है बिनु सबदै बूझ न पाइ ॥

Baajhu guroo gubaaru hai binu sabadai boojh na paai ||

Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness; without the Shabad, understanding is not obtained.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

गुरमती परगासु होइ सचि रहै लिव लाइ ॥

Guramatee paragaasu hoi sachi rahai liv laai ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, you shall be enlightened; remain absorbed in the Love of the True Lord.

ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਸੰਚਰੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੬॥

तिथै कालु न संचरै जोती जोति समाइ ॥६॥

Tithai kaalu na sanccharai jotee joti samaai ||6||

Death does not go there; your light shall merge with the Light. ||6||


ਤੂੰਹੈ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

तूंहै साजनु तूं सुजाणु तूं आपे मेलणहारु ॥

Toonhhai saajanu toonn sujaa(nn)u toonn aape mela(nn)ahaaru ||

You are my Best Friend; You are All-knowing. You are the One who unites us with Yourself.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥

गुर सबदी सालाहीऐ अंतु न पारावारु ॥

Gur sabadee saalaaheeai anttu na paaraavaaru ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, we praise You; You have no end or limitation.

ਤਿਥੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਅਪੜੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥

तिथै कालु न अपड़ै जिथै गुर का सबदु अपारु ॥७॥

Tithai kaalu na apa(rr)ai jithai gur kaa sabadu apaaru ||7||

Death does not reach that place, where the Infinite Word of the Guru's Shabad resounds. ||7||


ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਭੇ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥

हुकमी सभे ऊपजहि हुकमी कार कमाहि ॥

Hukamee sabhe upajahi hukamee kaar kamaahi ||

By the Hukam of His Command, all are created. By His Command, actions are performed.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਲੈ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

हुकमी कालै वसि है हुकमी साचि समाहि ॥

Hukamee kaalai vasi hai hukamee saachi samaahi ||

By His Command, all are subject to death; by His Command, they merge in Truth.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਇਨਾ ਜੰਤਾ ਵਸਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੮॥੪॥

नानक जो तिसु भावै सो थीऐ इना जंता वसि किछु नाहि ॥८॥४॥

Naanak jo tisu bhaavai so theeai inaa janttaa vasi kichhu naahi ||8||4||

O Nanak, whatever pleases His Will comes to pass. Nothing is in the hands of these beings. ||8||4||


ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਮਨਿ ਜੂਠੈ ਤਨਿ ਜੂਠਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜੂਠੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

मनि जूठै तनि जूठि है जिहवा जूठी होइ ॥

Mani joothai tani joothi hai jihavaa joothee hoi ||

If the mind is polluted, then the body is polluted, and the tongue is polluted as well.

ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੈ ਝੂਠੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

मुखि झूठै झूठु बोलणा किउ करि सूचा होइ ॥

Mukhi jhoothai jhoothu bola(nn)aa kiu kari soochaa hoi ||

With false mouths, people speak falsehood. How can they be made pure?

ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਮਾਂਜੀਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

बिनु अभ सबद न मांजीऐ साचे ते सचु होइ ॥१॥

Binu abh sabad na maanjeeai saache te sachu hoi ||1||

Without the Holy Water of the Shabad, they are not cleansed. From the True One alone comes Truth. ||1||


ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣਹੀਣੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਕੇਹਿ ॥

मुंधे गुणहीणी सुखु केहि ॥

Munddhe gu(nn)ahee(nn)ee sukhu kehi ||

O soul-bride, without virtue, what happiness can there be?

ਪਿਰੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਣਸੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਨੇਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पिरु रलीआ रसि माणसी साचि सबदि सुखु नेहि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Piru raleeaa rasi maa(nn)asee saachi sabadi sukhu nehi ||1|| rahaau ||

The Husband Lord enjoys her with pleasure and delight; she is at peace in the love of the True Word of the Shabad. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪਿਰੁ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਧਨ ਵਾਂਢੀ ਝੂਰੇਇ ॥

पिरु परदेसी जे थीऐ धन वांढी झूरेइ ॥

Piru paradesee je theeai dhan vaandhee jhoorei ||

When the Husband goes away, the bride suffers in the pain of separation,

ਜਿਉ ਜਲਿ ਥੋੜੈ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

जिउ जलि थोड़ै मछुली करण पलाव करेइ ॥

Jiu jali tho(rr)ai machhulee kara(nn) palaav karei ||

Like the fish in shallow water, crying for mercy.

ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੨॥

पिर भावै सुखु पाईऐ जा आपे नदरि करेइ ॥२॥

Pir bhaavai sukhu paaeeai jaa aape nadari karei ||2||

As it pleases the Will of the Husband Lord, peace is obtained, when He Himself casts His Glance of Grace. ||2||


ਪਿਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

पिरु सालाही आपणा सखी सहेली नालि ॥

Piru saalaahee aapa(nn)aa sakhee sahelee naali ||

Praise your Husband Lord, together with your bridesmaids and friends.

ਤਨਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਰਤੀ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥

तनि सोहै मनु मोहिआ रती रंगि निहालि ॥

Tani sohai manu mohiaa ratee ranggi nihaali ||

The body is beautified, and the mind is fascinated. Imbued with His Love, we are enraptured.

ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੩॥

सबदि सवारी सोहणी पिरु रावे गुण नालि ॥३॥

Sabadi savaaree soha(nn)ee piru raave gu(nn) naali ||3||

Adorned with the Shabad, the beautiful bride enjoys her Husband with virtue. ||3||


ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਖੋਟੀ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰਿ ॥

कामणि कामि न आवई खोटी अवगणिआरि ॥

Kaama(nn)i kaami na aavaee khotee avaga(nn)iaari ||

The soul-bride is of no use at all, if she is evil and without virtue.

ਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪੇਈਐ ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਝੂਠਿ ਜਲੀ ਵੇਕਾਰਿ ॥

ना सुखु पेईऐ साहुरै झूठि जली वेकारि ॥

Naa sukhu peeeai saahurai jhoothi jalee vekaari ||

She does not find peace in this world or the next; she burns in falsehood and corruption.

ਆਵਣੁ ਵੰਞਣੁ ਡਾਖੜੋ ਛੋਡੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

आवणु वंञणु डाखड़ो छोडी कंति विसारि ॥४॥

Aava(nn)u van(ny)a(nn)u daakha(rr)o chhodee kantti visaari ||4||

Coming and going are very difficult for that bride who is abandoned and forgotten by her Husband Lord. ||4||


ਪਿਰ ਕੀ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੁਤੀ ਸੋ ਕਿਤੁ ਸਾਦਿ ॥

पिर की नारि सुहावणी मुती सो कितु सादि ॥

Pir kee naari suhaava(nn)ee mutee so kitu saadi ||

The beautiful soul-bride of the Husband Lord-by what sensual pleasures has she been doomed?

ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਬੋਲੇ ਫਾਦਿਲੁ ਬਾਦਿ ॥

पिर कै कामि न आवई बोले फादिलु बादि ॥

Pir kai kaami na aavaee bole phaadilu baadi ||

She is of no use to her Husband if she babbles in useless arguments.

ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਛੂਟੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਸਾਦਿ ॥੫॥

दरि घरि ढोई ना लहै छूटी दूजै सादि ॥५॥

Dari ghari dhoee naa lahai chhootee doojai saadi ||5||

At the Door of His Home, she finds no shelter; she is discarded for seeking other pleasures. ||5||


ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਾਚਹਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

पंडित वाचहि पोथीआ ना बूझहि वीचारु ॥

Panddit vaachahi potheeaa naa boojhahi veechaaru ||

The Pandits, the religious scholars, read their books, but they do not understand the real meaning.

ਅਨ ਕਉ ਮਤੀ ਦੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

अन कउ मती दे चलहि माइआ का वापारु ॥

An kau matee de chalahi maaiaa kaa vaapaaru ||

They give instructions to others, and then walk away, but they deal in Maya themselves.

ਕਥਨੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗੁ ਭਵੈ ਰਹਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੬॥

कथनी झूठी जगु भवै रहणी सबदु सु सारु ॥६॥

Kathanee jhoothee jagu bhavai raha(nn)ee sabadu su saaru ||6||

Speaking falsehood, they wander around the world, while those who remain true to the Shabad are excellent and exalted. ||6||


ਕੇਤੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਜੋਤਕੀ ਬੇਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

केते पंडित जोतकी बेदा करहि बीचारु ॥

Kete panddit jotakee bedaa karahi beechaaru ||

There are so many Pandits and astrologers who ponder over the Vedas.

ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੇ ਵਾਦੇ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

वादि विरोधि सलाहणे वादे आवणु जाणु ॥

Vaadi virodhi salaaha(nn)e vaade aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u ||

They glorify their disputes and arguments, and in these controversies they continue coming and going.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਕਹਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੁ ॥੭॥

बिनु गुर करम न छुटसी कहि सुणि आखि वखाणु ॥७॥

Binu gur karam na chhutasee kahi su(nn)i aakhi vakhaa(nn)u ||7||

Without the Guru, they are not released from their karma, although they speak and listen and preach and explain. ||7||


ਸਭਿ ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਆਖੀਅਹਿ ਮੈ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

सभि गुणवंती आखीअहि मै गुणु नाही कोइ ॥

Sabhi gu(nn)avanttee aakheeahi mai gu(nn)u naahee koi ||

They all call themselves virtuous, but I have no virtue at all.

ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥

हरि वरु नारि सुहावणी मै भावै प्रभु सोइ ॥

Hari varu naari suhaava(nn)ee mai bhaavai prbhu soi ||

With the Lord as her Husband, the soul-bride is happy; I, too, love that God.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੜਾ ਨਾ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੮॥੫॥

नानक सबदि मिलावड़ा ना वेछोड़ा होइ ॥८॥५॥

Naanak sabadi milaava(rr)aa naa vechho(rr)aa hoi ||8||5||

O Nanak, through the Shabad, union is obtained; there is no more separation. ||8||5||


ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਧੀਐ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

जपु तपु संजमु साधीऐ तीरथि कीचै वासु ॥

Japu tapu sanjjamu saadheeai teerathi keechai vaasu ||

You may chant and meditate, practice austerities and self-restraint, and dwell at sacred shrines of pilgrimage;

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਾਸੁ ॥

पुंन दान चंगिआईआ बिनु साचे किआ तासु ॥

Punn daan changgiaaeeaa binu saache kiaa taasu ||

You may give donations to charity, and perform good deeds, but without the True One, what is the use of it all?

ਜੇਹਾ ਰਾਧੇ ਤੇਹਾ ਲੁਣੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

जेहा राधे तेहा लुणै बिनु गुण जनमु विणासु ॥१॥

Jehaa raadhe tehaa lu(nn)ai binu gu(nn) janamu vi(nn)aasu ||1||

As you plant, so shall you harvest. Without virtue, this human life passes away in vain. ||1||


ਮੁੰਧੇ ਗੁਣ ਦਾਸੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

मुंधे गुण दासी सुखु होइ ॥

Munddhe gu(nn) daasee sukhu hoi ||

O young bride, be a slave to virtue, and you shall find peace.

ਅਵਗਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अवगण तिआगि समाईऐ गुरमति पूरा सोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Avaga(nn) tiaagi samaaeeai guramati pooraa soi ||1|| rahaau ||

Renouncing wrongful actions, following the Guru's Teachings, you shall be absorbed into the Perfect One. ||1|| Pause ||


ਵਿਣੁ ਰਾਸੀ ਵਾਪਾਰੀਆ ਤਕੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

विणु रासी वापारीआ तके कुंडा चारि ॥

Vi(nn)u raasee vaapaareeaa take kunddaa chaari ||

Without capital, the trader looks around in all four directions.

ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਘਰ ਬਾਰਿ ॥

मूलु न बुझै आपणा वसतु रही घर बारि ॥

Moolu na bujhai aapa(nn)aa vasatu rahee ghar baari ||

He does not understand his own origins; the merchandise remains within the door of his own house.

ਵਿਣੁ ਵਖਰ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰਿ ॥੨॥

विणु वखर दुखु अगला कूड़ि मुठी कूड़िआरि ॥२॥

Vi(nn)u vakhar dukhu agalaa koo(rr)i muthee koo(rr)iaari ||2||

Without this commodity, there is great pain. The false are ruined by falsehood. ||2||


ਲਾਹਾ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਉਤਨਾ ਪਰਖੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

लाहा अहिनिसि नउतना परखे रतनु वीचारि ॥

Laahaa ahinisi nautanaa parakhe ratanu veechaari ||

One who contemplates and appraises this Jewel day and night reaps new profits.

ਵਸਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਾਰਿ ॥

वसतु लहै घरि आपणै चलै कारजु सारि ॥

Vasatu lahai ghari aapa(nn)ai chalai kaaraju saari ||

He finds the merchandise within his own home, and departs after arranging his affairs.

ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

वणजारिआ सिउ वणजु करि गुरमुखि ब्रहमु बीचारि ॥३॥

Va(nn)ajaariaa siu va(nn)aju kari guramukhi brhamu beechaari ||3||

So trade with the true traders, and as Gurmukh, contemplate God. ||3||


ਸੰਤਾਂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

संतां संगति पाईऐ जे मेले मेलणहारु ॥

Santtaan sanggati paaeeai je mele mela(nn)ahaaru ||

In the Society of the Saints, He is found, if the Uniter unites us.

ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵਿਛੁੜੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

मिलिआ होइ न विछुड़ै जिसु अंतरि जोति अपार ॥

Miliaa hoi na vichhu(rr)ai jisu anttari joti apaar ||

One whose heart is filled with His Infinite Light meets with Him, and shall never again be separated from Him.

ਸਚੈ ਆਸਣਿ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰ ॥੪॥

सचै आसणि सचि रहै सचै प्रेम पिआर ॥४॥

Sachai aasa(nn)i sachi rahai sachai prem piaar ||4||

True is his position; he abides in Truth, with love and affection for the True One. ||4||


ਜਿਨੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥

जिनी आपु पछाणिआ घर महि महलु सुथाइ ॥

Jinee aapu pachhaa(nn)iaa ghar mahi mahalu suthaai ||

One who understands himself finds the Mansion of the Lord's Presence within his own home.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

सचे सेती रतिआ सचो पलै पाइ ॥

Sache setee ratiaa sacho palai paai ||

Imbued with the True Lord, Truth is gathered in.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸਾਚੋ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੫॥

त्रिभवणि सो प्रभु जाणीऐ साचो साचै नाइ ॥५॥

Tribhava(nn)i so prbhu jaa(nn)eeai saacho saachai naai ||5||

God is known throughout the three worlds. True is the Name of the True One. ||5||


ਸਾ ਧਨ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

सा धन खरी सुहावणी जिनि पिरु जाता संगि ॥

Saa dhan kharee suhaava(nn)ee jini piru jaataa sanggi ||

The wife who knows that her Husband Lord is always with her is very beautiful.

ਮਹਲੀ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਰੰਗਿ ॥

महली महलि बुलाईऐ सो पिरु रावे रंगि ॥

Mahalee mahali bulaaeeai so piru raave ranggi ||

The soul-bride is called to the Mansion of the His Presence, and her Husband Lord ravishes her with love.

ਸਚਿ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਾ ਭਲੀ ਪਿਰਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਸੰਗਿ ॥੬॥

सचि सुहागणि सा भली पिरि मोही गुण संगि ॥६॥

Sachi suhaaga(nn)i saa bhalee piri mohee gu(nn) sanggi ||6||

The happy soul-bride is true and good; she is fascinated by the Glories of her Husband Lord. ||6||


ਭੂਲੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਥਲਿ ਚੜਾ ਥਲਿ ਚੜਿ ਡੂਗਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

भूली भूली थलि चड़ा थलि चड़ि डूगरि जाउ ॥

Bhoolee bhoolee thali cha(rr)aa thali cha(rr)i doogari jaau ||

Wandering around and making mistakes, I climb the plateau; having climbed the plateau, I go up the mountain.

ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਭੂਲੀ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਉ ॥

बन महि भूली जे फिरा बिनु गुर बूझ न पाउ ॥

Ban mahi bhoolee je phiraa binu gur boojh na paau ||

But now I have lost my way, and I am wandering around in the forest; without the Guru, I do not understand.

ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੂਲੀ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਉ ਜਾਉ ॥੭॥

नावहु भूली जे फिरा फिरि फिरि आवउ जाउ ॥७॥

Naavahu bhoolee je phiraa phiri phiri aavau jaau ||7||

If I wander around forgetting God's Name, I shall continue coming and going in reincarnation, over and over again. ||7||


ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਪਧਾਊਆ ਚਲੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਹੋਇ ॥

पुछहु जाइ पधाऊआ चले चाकर होइ ॥

Puchhahu jaai padhaauaa chale chaakar hoi ||

Go and ask the travelers, how to walk on the Path as His slave.

ਰਾਜਨੁ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

राजनु जाणहि आपणा दरि घरि ठाक न होइ ॥

Raajanu jaa(nn)ahi aapa(nn)aa dari ghari thaak na hoi ||

They know the Lord to be their King, and at the Door to His Home, their way is not blocked.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੬॥

नानक एको रवि रहिआ दूजा अवरु न कोइ ॥८॥६॥

Naanak eko ravi rahiaa doojaa avaru na koi ||8||6||

O Nanak, the One is pervading everywhere; there is no other at all. ||8||6||

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਦੇਹ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥

गुर ते निरमलु जाणीऐ निरमल देह सरीरु ॥

Gur te niramalu jaa(nn)eeai niramal deh sareeru ||

Through the Guru, the Pure One is known, and the human body becomes pure as well.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚੋ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਭ ਪੀਰ ॥

निरमलु साचो मनि वसै सो जाणै अभ पीर ॥

Niramalu saacho mani vasai so jaa(nn)ai abh peer ||

The Pure, True Lord abides within the mind; He knows the pain of our hearts.

ਸਹਜੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਅਗਲੋ ਨਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਮ ਤੀਰੁ ॥੧॥

सहजै ते सुखु अगलो ना लागै जम तीरु ॥१॥

Sahajai te sukhu agalo naa laagai jam teeru ||1||

With intuitive ease, a great peace is found, and the arrow of death shall not strike you. ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

भाई रे मैलु नाही निरमल जलि नाइ ॥

Bhaaee re mailu naahee niramal jali naai ||

O Siblings of Destiny, filth is washed away by bathing in the Pure Water of the Name.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

निरमलु साचा एकु तू होरु मैलु भरी सभ जाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Niramalu saachaa eku too horu mailu bharee sabh jaai ||1|| rahaau ||

You alone are Perfectly Pure, O True Lord; all other places are filled with filth. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਿ ॥

हरि का मंदरु सोहणा कीआ करणैहारि ॥

Hari kaa manddaru soha(nn)aa keeaa kara(nn)aihaari ||

The Temple of the Lord is beautiful; it was made by the Creator Lord.

ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਜੋਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

रवि ससि दीप अनूप जोति त्रिभवणि जोति अपार ॥

Ravi sasi deep anoop joti tribhava(nn)i joti apaar ||

The sun and the moon are lamps of incomparably beautiful light. Throughout the three worlds, the Infinite Light is pervading.

ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਗੜ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਵਾਪਾਰ ॥੨॥

हाट पटण गड़ कोठड़ी सचु सउदा वापार ॥२॥

Haat pata(nn) ga(rr) kotha(rr)ee sachu saudaa vaapaar ||2||

In the shops of the city of the body, in the fortresses and in the huts, the True Merchandise is traded. ||2||


ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨਾ ਦੇਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਭਾਇ ॥

गिआन अंजनु भै भंजना देखु निरंजन भाइ ॥

Giaan anjjanu bhai bhanjjanaa dekhu niranjjan bhaai ||

The ointment of spiritual wisdom is the destroyer of fear; through love, the Pure One is seen.

ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਭ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਇ ॥

गुपतु प्रगटु सभ जाणीऐ जे मनु राखै ठाइ ॥

Gupatu prgatu sabh jaa(nn)eeai je manu raakhai thaai ||

The mysteries of the seen and the unseen are all known, if the mind is kept centered and balanced.

ਐਸਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੩॥

ऐसा सतिगुरु जे मिलै ता सहजे लए मिलाइ ॥३॥

Aisaa satiguru je milai taa sahaje lae milaai ||3||

If one finds such a True Guru, the Lord is met with intuitive ease. ||3||


ਕਸਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਈਐ ਪਰਖੇ ਹਿਤੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

कसि कसवटी लाईऐ परखे हितु चितु लाइ ॥

Kasi kasavatee laaeeai parakhe hitu chitu laai ||

He draws us to His Touchstone, to test our love and consciousness.

ਖੋਟੇ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਇਨੀ ਖਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

खोटे ठउर न पाइनी खरे खजानै पाइ ॥

Khote thaur na paainee khare khajaanai paai ||

The counterfeit have no place there, but the genuine are placed in His Treasury.

ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਇਉ ਮਲੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥

आस अंदेसा दूरि करि इउ मलु जाइ समाइ ॥४॥

Aas anddesaa doori kari iu malu jaai samaai ||4||

Let your hopes and anxieties depart; thus pollution is washed away. ||4||


ਸੁਖ ਕਉ ਮਾਗੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਮਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

सुख कउ मागै सभु को दुखु न मागै कोइ ॥

Sukh kau maagai sabhu ko dukhu na maagai koi ||

Everyone begs for happiness; no one asks for suffering.

ਸੁਖੈ ਕਉ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

सुखै कउ दुखु अगला मनमुखि बूझ न होइ ॥

Sukhai kau dukhu agalaa manamukhi boojh na hoi ||

But in the wake of happiness, there comes great suffering. The self-willed manmukhs do not understand this.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੀਅਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥

सुख दुख सम करि जाणीअहि सबदि भेदि सुखु होइ ॥५॥

Sukh dukh sam kari jaa(nn)eeahi sabadi bhedi sukhu hoi ||5||

Those who see pain and pleasure as one and the same find peace; they are pierced through by the Shabad. ||5||


ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਵਾਚੀਐ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਿਆਸੁ ॥

बेदु पुकारे वाचीऐ बाणी ब्रहम बिआसु ॥

Bedu pukaare vaacheeai baa(nn)ee brham biaasu ||

The Vedas proclaim, and the words of Vyaasa tell us,

ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥

मुनि जन सेवक साधिका नामि रते गुणतासु ॥

Muni jan sevak saadhikaa naami rate gu(nn)ataasu ||

That the silent sages, the servants of the Lord, and those who practice a life of spiritual discipline are attuned to the Naam, the Treasure of Excellence.

ਸਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਜਿਣਿ ਗਏ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਸੁ ॥੬॥

सचि रते से जिणि गए हउ सद बलिहारै जासु ॥६॥

Sachi rate se ji(nn)i gae hau sad balihaarai jaasu ||6||

Those who are attuned to the True Name win the game of life; I am forever a sacrifice to them. ||6||


ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗਿ ਮੈਲੇ ਮਲੁ ਭਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

चहु जुगि मैले मलु भरे जिन मुखि नामु न होइ ॥

Chahu jugi maile malu bhare jin mukhi naamu na hoi ||

Those who do not have the Naam in their mouths are filled with pollution; they are filthy throughout the four ages.

ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਇ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਕਾਲਾ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥

भगती भाइ विहूणिआ मुहु काला पति खोइ ॥

Bhagatee bhaai vihoo(nn)iaa muhu kaalaa pati khoi ||

Without loving devotion to God, their faces are blackened, and their honor is lost.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਅਵਗਣ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਇ ॥੭॥

जिनी नामु विसारिआ अवगण मुठी रोइ ॥७॥

Jinee naamu visaariaa avaga(nn) muthee roi ||7||

Those who have forgotten the Naam are plundered by evil; they weep and wail in dismay. ||7||


ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਪਾਇਆ ਡਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

खोजत खोजत पाइआ डरु करि मिलै मिलाइ ॥

Khojat khojat paaiaa daru kari milai milaai ||

I searched and searched, and found God. In the Fear of God, I have been united in His Union.

ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

आपु पछाणै घरि वसै हउमै त्रिसना जाइ ॥

Aapu pachhaa(nn)ai ghari vasai haumai trisanaa jaai ||

Through self-realization, people dwell within the home of their inner being; egotism and desire depart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਊਜਲੇ ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੮॥੭॥

नानक निरमल ऊजले जो राते हरि नाइ ॥८॥७॥

Naanak niramal ujale jo raate hari naai ||8||7||

O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Name of the Lord are immaculate and radiant. ||8||7||


ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਸੁਣਿ ਮਨ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਾਵਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੁ ॥

सुणि मन भूले बावरे गुर की चरणी लागु ॥

Su(nn)i man bhoole baavare gur kee chara(nn)ee laagu ||

Listen, O deluded and demented mind: hold tight to the Guru's Feet.

ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਤੂ ਜਮੁ ਡਰਪੈ ਦੁਖ ਭਾਗੁ ॥

हरि जपि नामु धिआइ तू जमु डरपै दुख भागु ॥

Hari japi naamu dhiaai too jamu darapai dukh bhaagu ||

Chant and meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; death will be afraid of you, and suffering shall depart.

ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਕਿਉ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੈ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ॥੧॥

दूखु घणो दोहागणी किउ थिरु रहै सुहागु ॥१॥

Dookhu gha(nn)o dohaaga(nn)ee kiu thiru rahai suhaagu ||1||

The deserted wife suffers terrible pain. How can her Husband Lord remain with her forever? ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਥਾਉ ॥

भाई रे अवरु नाही मै थाउ ॥

Bhaaee re avaru naahee mai thaau ||

O Siblings of Destiny, I have no other place to go.

ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मै धनु नामु निधानु है गुरि दीआ बलि जाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mai dhanu naamu nidhaanu hai guri deeaa bali jaau ||1|| rahaau ||

The Guru has given me the Treasure of the Wealth of the Naam; I am a sacrifice to Him. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥

गुरमति पति साबासि तिसु तिस कै संगि मिलाउ ॥

Guramati pati saabaasi tisu tis kai sanggi milaau ||

The Guru's Teachings bring honor. Blessed is He-may I meet and be with Him!

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਊ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

तिसु बिनु घड़ी न जीवऊ बिनु नावै मरि जाउ ॥

Tisu binu gha(rr)ee na jeevau binu naavai mari jaau ||

Without Him, I cannot live, even for a moment. Without His Name, I die.

ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਟੇਕ ਟਿਕੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੨॥

मै अंधुले नामु न वीसरै टेक टिकी घरि जाउ ॥२॥

Mai anddhule naamu na veesarai tek tikee ghari jaau ||2||

I am blind-may I never forget the Naam! Under His Protection, I shall reach my true home. ||2||


ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਚੇਲੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥

गुरू जिना का अंधुला चेले नाही ठाउ ॥

Guroo jinaa kaa anddhulaa chele naahee thaau ||

Those chaylaas, those devotees, whose spiritual teacher is blind, shall not find their place of rest.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਸੁਆਉ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर नाउ न पाईऐ बिनु नावै किआ सुआउ ॥

Binu satigur naau na paaeeai binu naavai kiaa suaau ||

Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained. Without the Name, what is the use of it all?

ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰਞੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਉ ॥੩॥

आइ गइआ पछुतावणा जिउ सुंञै घरि काउ ॥३॥

Aai gaiaa pachhutaava(nn)aa jiu sun(ny)ai ghari kaau ||3||

People come and go, regretting and repenting, like crows in a deserted house. ||3||


ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਿਉ ਕਲਰ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥

बिनु नावै दुखु देहुरी जिउ कलर की भीति ॥

Binu naavai dukhu dehuree jiu kalar kee bheeti ||

Without the Name, the body suffers in pain; it crumbles like a wall of sand.

ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਚੀਤਿ ॥

तब लगु महलु न पाईऐ जब लगु साचु न चीति ॥

Tab lagu mahalu na paaeeai jab lagu saachu na cheeti ||

As long as Truth does not enter into the consciousness, the Mansion of the Lord's Presence is not found.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਪੈ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ਪਦੁ ਨੀਤਿ ॥੪॥

सबदि रपै घरु पाईऐ निरबाणी पदु नीति ॥४॥

Sabadi rapai gharu paaeeai nirabaa(nn)ee padu neeti ||4||

Attuned to the Shabad, we enter our home, and obtain the Eternal State of Nirvaanaa. ||4||


ਹਉ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਉ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਉ ॥

हउ गुर पूछउ आपणे गुर पुछि कार कमाउ ॥

Hau gur poochhau aapa(nn)e gur puchhi kaar kamaau ||

I ask my Guru for His Advice, and I follow the Guru's Advice.

ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

सबदि सलाही मनि वसै हउमै दुखु जलि जाउ ॥

Sabadi salaahee mani vasai haumai dukhu jali jaau ||

With the Shabads of Praise abiding in the mind, the pain of egotism is burnt away.

ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲਾਵੜਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੫॥

सहजे होइ मिलावड़ा साचे साचि मिलाउ ॥५॥

Sahaje hoi milaava(rr)aa saache saachi milaau ||5||

We are intuitively united with Him, and we meet the Truest of the True. ||5||


ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

सबदि रते से निरमले तजि काम क्रोधु अहंकारु ॥

Sabadi rate se niramale taji kaam krodhu ahankkaaru ||

Those who are attuned to the Shabad are spotless and pure; they renounce sexual desire, anger, selfishness and conceit.

ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਨਿ ਸਦ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

नामु सलाहनि सद सदा हरि राखहि उर धारि ॥

Naamu salaahani sad sadaa hari raakhahi ur dhaari ||

They sing the Praises of the Naam, forever and ever; they keep the Lord enshrined within their hearts.

ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਸਭ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥੬॥

सो किउ मनहु विसारीऐ सभ जीआ का आधारु ॥६॥

So kiu manahu visaareeai sabh jeeaa kaa aadhaaru ||6||

How could we ever forget Him from our minds? He is the Support of all beings. ||6||


ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਵਾਰ ॥

सबदि मरै सो मरि रहै फिरि मरै न दूजी वार ॥

Sabadi marai so mari rahai phiri marai na doojee vaar ||

One who dies in the Shabad is beyond death, and shall never die again.

ਸਬਦੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

सबदै ही ते पाईऐ हरि नामे लगै पिआरु ॥

Sabadai hee te paaeeai hari naame lagai piaaru ||

Through the Shabad, we find Him, and embrace love for the Name of the Lord.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੭॥

बिनु सबदै जगु भूला फिरै मरि जनमै वारो वार ॥७॥

Binu sabadai jagu bhoolaa phirai mari janamai vaaro vaar ||7||

Without the Shabad, the world is deceived; it dies and is reborn, over and over again. ||7||


ਸਭ ਸਾਲਾਹੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभ सालाहै आप कउ वडहु वडेरी होइ ॥

Sabh saalaahai aap kau vadahu vaderee hoi ||

All praise themselves, and call themselves the greatest of the great.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੀਐ ਕਹੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुर बिनु आपु न चीनीऐ कहे सुणे किआ होइ ॥

Gur binu aapu na cheeneeai kahe su(nn)e kiaa hoi ||

Without the Guru, one's self cannot be known. By merely speaking and listening, what is accomplished?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੮॥੮॥

नानक सबदि पछाणीऐ हउमै करै न कोइ ॥८॥८॥

Naanak sabadi pachhaa(nn)eeai haumai karai na koi ||8||8||

O Nanak, one who realizes the Shabad does not act in egotism. ||8||8||

बिनु पिर धन सीगारीऐ जोबनु बादि खुआरु ॥

Binu pir dhan seegaareeai jobanu baadi khuaaru ||

Without her Husband, the soul-bride's youth and ornaments are useless and wretched.

ਨਾ ਮਾਣੇ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੇਜੜੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਬਾਦਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

ना माणे सुखि सेजड़ी बिनु पिर बादि सीगारु ॥

Naa maa(nn)e sukhi seja(rr)ee binu pir baadi seegaaru ||

She does not enjoy the pleasure of His Bed; without her Husband, her ornaments are absurd.

ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਘਰਿ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

दूखु घणो दोहागणी ना घरि सेज भतारु ॥१॥

Dookhu gha(nn)o dohaaga(nn)ee naa ghari sej bhataaru ||1||

The discarded bride suffers terrible pain; her Husband does not come to the bed of her home. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

मन रे राम जपहु सुखु होइ ॥

Man re raam japahu sukhu hoi ||

O mind, meditate on the Lord, and find peace.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बिनु गुर प्रेमु न पाईऐ सबदि मिलै रंगु होइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Binu gur premu na paaeeai sabadi milai ranggu hoi ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Guru, love is not found. United with the Shabad, happiness is found. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

गुर सेवा सुखु पाईऐ हरि वरु सहजि सीगारु ॥

Gur sevaa sukhu paaeeai hari varu sahaji seegaaru ||

Serving the Guru, she finds peace, and her Husband Lord adorns her with intuitive wisdom.

ਸਚਿ ਮਾਣੇ ਪਿਰ ਸੇਜੜੀ ਗੂੜਾ ਹੇਤੁ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

सचि माणे पिर सेजड़ी गूड़ा हेतु पिआरु ॥

Sachi maa(nn)e pir seja(rr)ee goo(rr)aa hetu piaaru ||

Truly, she enjoys the Bed of her Husband, through her deep love and affection.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਗੁਣ ਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

गुरमुखि जाणि सिञाणीऐ गुरि मेली गुण चारु ॥२॥

Guramukhi jaa(nn)i si(ny)aa(nn)eeai guri melee gu(nn) chaaru ||2||

As Gurmukh, she comes to know Him. Meeting with the Guru, she maintains a virtuous lifestyle. ||2||


ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਵਰ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਪਿਰਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

सचि मिलहु वर कामणी पिरि मोही रंगु लाइ ॥

Sachi milahu var kaama(nn)ee piri mohee ranggu laai ||

Through Truth, meet your Husband Lord, O soul-bride. Enchanted by your Husband, enshrine love for Him.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਵਿਗਸਿਆ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

मनु तनु साचि विगसिआ कीमति कहणु न जाइ ॥

Manu tanu saachi vigasiaa keemati kaha(nn)u na jaai ||

Your mind and body shall blossom forth in Truth. The value of this cannot be described.

ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥

हरि वरु घरि सोहागणी निरमल साचै नाइ ॥३॥

Hari varu ghari sohaaga(nn)ee niramal saachai naai ||3||

The soul-bride finds her Husband Lord in the home of her own being; she is purified by the True Name. ||3||


ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੈ ਨਾਰਿ ॥

मन महि मनूआ जे मरै ता पिरु रावै नारि ॥

Man mahi manooaa je marai taa piru raavai naari ||

If the mind within the mind dies, then the Husband ravishes and enjoys His bride.

ਇਕਤੁ ਤਾਗੈ ਰਲਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਲਿ ਮੋਤੀਅਨ ਕਾ ਹਾਰੁ ॥

इकतु तागै रलि मिलै गलि मोतीअन का हारु ॥

Ikatu taagai rali milai gali moteean kaa haaru ||

They are woven into one texture, like pearls on a necklace around the neck.

ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

संत सभा सुखु ऊपजै गुरमुखि नाम अधारु ॥४॥

Santt sabhaa sukhu upajai guramukhi naam adhaaru ||4||

In the Society of the Saints, peace wells up; the Gurmukhs take the Support of the Naam. ||4||


ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਖਿਨਿ ਖਪੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

खिन महि उपजै खिनि खपै खिनु आवै खिनु जाइ ॥

Khin mahi upajai khini khapai khinu aavai khinu jaai ||

In an instant, one is born, and in an instant, one dies. In an instant one comes, and in an instant one goes.

ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਇ ॥

सबदु पछाणै रवि रहै ना तिसु कालु संताइ ॥

Sabadu pachhaa(nn)ai ravi rahai naa tisu kaalu santtaai ||

One who recognizes the Shabad merges into it, and is not afflicted by death.

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਨ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਕਥਨਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥

साहिबु अतुलु न तोलीऐ कथनि न पाइआ जाइ ॥५॥

Saahibu atulu na toleeai kathani na paaiaa jaai ||5||

Our Lord and Master is Unweighable; He cannot be weighed. He cannot be found merely by talking. ||5||


ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਆਏ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ॥

वापारी वणजारिआ आए वजहु लिखाइ ॥

Vaapaaree va(nn)ajaariaa aae vajahu likhaai ||

The merchants and the traders have come; their profits are pre-ordained.

ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

कार कमावहि सच की लाहा मिलै रजाइ ॥

Kaar kamaavahi sach kee laahaa milai rajaai ||

Those who practice Truth reap the profits, abiding in the Will of God.

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਇ ॥੬॥

पूंजी साची गुरु मिलै ना तिसु तिलु न तमाइ ॥६॥

Poonjjee saachee guru milai naa tisu tilu na tamaai ||6||

With the Merchandise of Truth, they meet the Guru, who does not have a trace of greed. ||6||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋੁਲਾਇਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਰਾਜੀ ਤੋਲੁ ॥

गुरमुखि तोलि तोलाइसी सचु तराजी तोलु ॥

Guramukhi toli taolaaisee sachu taraajee tolu ||

As Gurmukh, they are weighed and measured, in the balance and the scales of Truth.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਠਾਕੀ ਸਚੁ ਬੋਲੁ ॥

आसा मनसा मोहणी गुरि ठाकी सचु बोलु ॥

Aasaa manasaa moha(nn)ee guri thaakee sachu bolu ||

The enticements of hope and desire are quieted by the Guru, whose Word is True.

ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲਾਏ ਤੋਲਸੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੁ ॥੭॥

आपि तुलाए तोलसी पूरे पूरा तोलु ॥७॥

Aapi tulaae tolasee poore pooraa tolu ||7||

He Himself weighs with the scale; perfect is the weighing of the Perfect One. ||7||


ਕਥਨੈ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਨਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਭਾਰ ॥

कथनै कहणि न छुटीऐ ना पड़ि पुसतक भार ॥

Kathanai kaha(nn)i na chhuteeai naa pa(rr)i pusatak bhaar ||

No one is saved by mere talk and speech, nor by reading loads of books.

ਕਾਇਆ ਸੋਚ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਿਆਰ ॥

काइआ सोच न पाईऐ बिनु हरि भगति पिआर ॥

Kaaiaa soch na paaeeai binu hari bhagati piaar ||

The body does not obtain purity without loving devotion to the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੮॥੯॥

नानक नामु न वीसरै मेले गुरु करतार ॥८॥९॥

Naanak naamu na veesarai mele guru karataar ||8||9||

O Nanak, never forget the Naam; the Guru shall unite us with the Creator. ||8||9||

सतिगुरु पूरा जे मिलै पाईऐ रतनु बीचारु ॥

Satiguru pooraa je milai paaeeai ratanu beechaaru ||

Meeting the Perfect True Guru, we find the jewel of meditative reflection.

ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਰਬ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

मनु दीजै गुर आपणे पाईऐ सरब पिआरु ॥

Manu deejai gur aapa(nn)e paaeeai sarab piaaru ||

Surrendering our minds to our Guru, we find universal love.

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਵਗਣ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

मुकति पदारथु पाईऐ अवगण मेटणहारु ॥१॥

Mukati padaarathu paaeeai avaga(nn) meta(nn)ahaaru ||1||

We find the wealth of liberation, and our demerits are erased. ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

भाई रे गुर बिनु गिआनु न होइ ॥

Bhaaee re gur binu giaanu na hoi ||

O Siblings of Destiny, without the Guru, there is no spiritual wisdom.

ਪੂਛਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇ ਨਾਰਦੈ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਆਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पूछहु ब्रहमे नारदै बेद बिआसै कोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Poochhahu brhame naaradai bed biaasai koi ||1|| rahaau ||

Go and ask Brahma, Naarad and Vyaas, the writer of the Vedas. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧੁਨਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

गिआनु धिआनु धुनि जाणीऐ अकथु कहावै सोइ ॥

Giaanu dhiaanu dhuni jaa(nn)eeai akathu kahaavai soi ||

Know that from the vibration of the Word, we obtain spiritual wisdom and meditation. Through it, we speak the Unspoken.

ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਛਾਵ ਘਣੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

सफलिओ बिरखु हरीआवला छाव घणेरी होइ ॥

Saphalio birakhu hareeaavalaa chhaav gha(nn)eree hoi ||

He is the fruit-bearing Tree, luxuriantly green with abundant shade.

ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕੀ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

लाल जवेहर माणकी गुर भंडारै सोइ ॥२॥

Laal javehar maa(nn)akee gur bhanddaarai soi ||2||

The rubies, jewels and emeralds are in the Guru's Treasury. ||2||


ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

गुर भंडारै पाईऐ निरमल नाम पिआरु ॥

Gur bhanddaarai paaeeai niramal naam piaaru ||

From the Guru's Treasury, we receive the Love of the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸਾਚੋ ਵਖਰੁ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

साचो वखरु संचीऐ पूरै करमि अपारु ॥

Saacho vakharu sanccheeai poorai karami apaaru ||

We gather in the True Merchandise, through the Perfect Grace of the Infinite.

ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟਣੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਸੁਰ ਸੰਘਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

सुखदाता दुख मेटणो सतिगुरु असुर संघारु ॥३॥

Sukhadaataa dukh meta(nn)o satiguru asur sangghaaru ||3||

The True Guru is the Giver of peace, the Dispeller of pain, the Destroyer of demons. ||3||


ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਨਾ ਕੰਧੀ ਨਾ ਪਾਰੁ ॥

भवजलु बिखमु डरावणो ना कंधी ना पारु ॥

Bhavajalu bikhamu daraava(nn)o naa kanddhee naa paaru ||

The terrifying world-ocean is difficult and dreadful; there is no shore on this side or the one beyond.

ਨਾ ਬੇੜੀ ਨਾ ਤੁਲਹੜਾ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਵੰਝੁ ਮਲਾਰੁ ॥

ना बेड़ी ना तुलहड़ा ना तिसु वंझु मलारु ॥

Naa be(rr)ee naa tulaha(rr)aa naa tisu vanjjhu malaaru ||

There is no boat, no raft, no oars and no boatman.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੈ ਕਾ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

सतिगुरु भै का बोहिथा नदरी पारि उतारु ॥४॥

Satiguru bhai kaa bohithaa nadaree paari utaaru ||4||

The True Guru is the only boat on this terrifying ocean. His Glance of Grace carries us across. ||4||


ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

इकु तिलु पिआरा विसरै दुखु लागै सुखु जाइ ॥

Iku tilu piaaraa visarai dukhu laagai sukhu jaai ||

If I forget my Beloved, even for an instant, suffering overtakes me and peace departs.

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਜਲਉ ਜਲਾਵਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਰਸਾਇ ॥

जिहवा जलउ जलावणी नामु न जपै रसाइ ॥

Jihavaa jalau jalaava(nn)ee naamu na japai rasaai ||

Let that tongue be burnt in flames, which does not chant the Naam with love.

ਘਟੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਅਗਲੋ ਜਮੁ ਪਕੜੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥੫॥

घटु बिनसै दुखु अगलो जमु पकड़ै पछुताइ ॥५॥

Ghatu binasai dukhu agalo jamu paka(rr)ai pachhutaai ||5||

When the pitcher of the body bursts, there is terrible pain; those who are caught by the Minister of Death regret and repent. ||5||


ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਲਤੁ ਨ ਸਾਥਿ ॥

मेरी मेरी करि गए तनु धनु कलतु न साथि ॥

Meree meree kari gae tanu dhanu kalatu na saathi ||

Crying out, ""Mine! Mine!"", they have departed, but their bodies, their wealth, and their wives did not go with them.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਆਥਿ ॥

बिनु नावै धनु बादि है भूलो मारगि आथि ॥

Binu naavai dhanu baadi hai bhoolo maaragi aathi ||

Without the Name, wealth is useless; deceived by wealth, they have lost their way.

ਸਾਚਉ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥੋ ਕਾਥਿ ॥੬॥

साचउ साहिबु सेवीऐ गुरमुखि अकथो काथि ॥६॥

Saachau saahibu seveeai guramukhi akatho kaathi ||6||

So serve the True Lord; become Gurmukh, and speak the Unspoken. ||6||


ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

आवै जाइ भवाईऐ पइऐ किरति कमाइ ॥

Aavai jaai bhavaaeeai paiai kirati kamaai ||

Coming and going, people wander through reincarnation; they act according to their past actions.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਮੇਟੀਐ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

पूरबि लिखिआ किउ मेटीऐ लिखिआ लेखु रजाइ ॥

Poorabi likhiaa kiu meteeai likhiaa lekhu rajaai ||

How can one's pre-ordained destiny be erased? It is written in accordance with the Lord's Will.

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੭॥

बिनु हरि नाम न छुटीऐ गुरमति मिलै मिलाइ ॥७॥

Binu hari naam na chhuteeai guramati milai milaai ||7||

Without the Name of the Lord, no one can be saved. Through the Guru's Teachings, we are united in His Union. ||7||


ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਾਨੁ ॥

तिसु बिनु मेरा को नही जिस का जीउ परानु ॥

Tisu binu meraa ko nahee jis kaa jeeu paraanu ||

Without Him, I have no one to call my own. My soul and my breath of life belong to Him.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਉ ਲੋਭੁ ਜਲਉ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

हउमै ममता जलि बलउ लोभु जलउ अभिमानु ॥

Haumai mamataa jali balau lobhu jalau abhimaanu ||

May my egotism and possessiveness be burnt to ashes, and my greed and egotistical pride consigned to the fire.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੮॥੧੦॥

नानक सबदु वीचारीऐ पाईऐ गुणी निधानु ॥८॥१०॥

Naanak sabadu veechaareeai paaeeai gu(nn)ee nidhaanu ||8||10||

O Nanak, contemplating the Shabad, the Treasure of Excellence is obtained. ||8||10||

Re man aisee hari siu preeti kari jaisee jal kamalehi ||

O mind, love the Lord, as the lotus loves the water.

ਲਹਰੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜੀਐ ਭੀ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ ॥

लहरी नालि पछाड़ीऐ भी विगसै असनेहि ॥

Laharee naali pachhaa(rr)eeai bhee vigasai asanehi ||

Tossed about by the waves, it still blossoms with love.

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਨੇਹਿ ॥੧॥

जल महि जीअ उपाइ कै बिनु जल मरणु तिनेहि ॥१॥

Jal mahi jeea upaai kai binu jal mara(nn)u tinehi ||1||

In the water, the creatures are created; outside of the water they die. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ ॥

मन रे किउ छूटहि बिनु पिआर ॥

Man re kiu chhootahi binu piaar ||

O mind, how can you be saved without love?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि अंतरि रवि रहिआ बखसे भगति भंडार ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi anttari ravi rahiaa bakhase bhagati bhanddaar ||1|| rahaau ||

God permeates the inner beings of the Gurmukhs. They are blessed with the treasure of devotion. ||1|| Pause ||


ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਨੀਰ ॥

रे मन ऐसी हरि सिउ प्रीति करि जैसी मछुली नीर ॥

Re man aisee hari siu preeti kari jaisee machhulee neer ||

O mind, love the Lord, as the fish loves the water.

ਜਿਉ ਅਧਿਕਉ ਤਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥

जिउ अधिकउ तिउ सुखु घणो मनि तनि सांति सरीर ॥

Jiu adhikau tiu sukhu gha(nn)o mani tani saanti sareer ||

The more the water, the more the happiness, and the greater the peace of mind and body.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਭ ਪੀਰ ॥੨॥

बिनु जल घड़ी न जीवई प्रभु जाणै अभ पीर ॥२॥

Binu jal gha(rr)ee na jeevaee prbhu jaa(nn)ai abh peer ||2||

Without water, she cannot live, even for an instant. God knows the suffering of her mind. ||2||


ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੇਹ ॥

रे मन ऐसी हरि सिउ प्रीति करि जैसी चात्रिक मेह ॥

Re man aisee hari siu preeti kari jaisee chaatrik meh ||

O mind, love the Lord, as the song-bird loves the rain.

ਸਰ ਭਰਿ ਥਲ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਕੇਹ ॥

सर भरि थल हरीआवले इक बूंद न पवई केह ॥

Sar bhari thal hareeaavale ik boondd na pavaee keh ||

The pools are overflowing with water, and the land is luxuriantly green, but what are they to her, if that single drop of rain does not fall into her mouth?

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ ॥੩॥

करमि मिलै सो पाईऐ किरतु पइआ सिरि देह ॥३॥

Karami milai so paaeeai kiratu paiaa siri deh ||3||

By His Grace, she receives it; otherwise, because of her past actions, she gives her head. ||3||


ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਦੁਧ ਹੋਇ ॥

रे मन ऐसी हरि सिउ प्रीति करि जैसी जल दुध होइ ॥

Re man aisee hari siu preeti kari jaisee jal dudh hoi ||

O mind, love the Lord, as the water loves the milk.

ਆਵਟਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਖਵੈ ਦੁਧ ਕਉ ਖਪਣਿ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥

आवटणु आपे खवै दुध कउ खपणि न देइ ॥

Aavata(nn)u aape khavai dudh kau khapa(nn)i na dei ||

The water, added to the milk, itself bears the heat, and prevents the milk from burning.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਸਚਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥

आपे मेलि विछुंनिआ सचि वडिआई देइ ॥४॥

Aape meli vichhunniaa sachi vadiaaee dei ||4||

God unites the separated ones with Himself again, and blesses them with true greatness. ||4||


ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰ ॥

रे मन ऐसी हरि सिउ प्रीति करि जैसी चकवी सूर ॥

Re man aisee hari siu preeti kari jaisee chakavee soor ||

O mind, love the Lord, as the chakvee duck loves the sun.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥

खिनु पलु नीद न सोवई जाणै दूरि हजूरि ॥

Khinu palu need na sovaee jaa(nn)ai doori hajoori ||

She does not sleep, for an instant or a moment; the sun is so far away, but she thinks that it is near.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੫॥

मनमुखि सोझी ना पवै गुरमुखि सदा हजूरि ॥५॥

Manamukhi sojhee naa pavai guramukhi sadaa hajoori ||5||

Understanding does not come to the self-willed manmukh. But to the Gurmukh, the Lord is always close. ||5||


ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਵਣੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

मनमुखि गणत गणावणी करता करे सु होइ ॥

Manamukhi ga(nn)at ga(nn)aava(nn)ee karataa kare su hoi ||

The self-willed manmukhs make their calculations and plans, but only the actions of the Creator come to pass.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥

ता की कीमति ना पवै जे लोचै सभु कोइ ॥

Taa kee keemati naa pavai je lochai sabhu koi ||

His Value cannot be estimated, even though everyone may wish to do so.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

गुरमति होइ त पाईऐ सचि मिलै सुखु होइ ॥६॥

Guramati hoi ta paaeeai sachi milai sukhu hoi ||6||

Through the Guru's Teachings, it is revealed. Meeting with the True One, peace is found. ||6||


ਸਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

सचा नेहु न तुटई जे सतिगुरु भेटै सोइ ॥

Sachaa nehu na tutaee je satiguru bhetai soi ||

True love shall not be broken, if the True Guru is met.

ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

गिआन पदारथु पाईऐ त्रिभवण सोझी होइ ॥

Giaan padaarathu paaeeai tribhava(nn) sojhee hoi ||

Obtaining the wealth of spiritual wisdom, the understanding of the three worlds is acquired.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥

निरमलु नामु न वीसरै जे गुण का गाहकु होइ ॥७॥

Niramalu naamu na veesarai je gu(nn) kaa gaahaku hoi ||7||

So become a customer of merit, and do not forget the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||7||


ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਖਣੂੰ ਜੋ ਚੁਗਦੇ ਸਰ ਤਲਿ ॥

खेलि गए से पंखणूं जो चुगदे सर तलि ॥

Kheli gae se pankkha(nn)oonn jo chugade sar tali ||

Those birds which peck at the shore of the pool have played and have departed.

ਘੜੀ ਕਿ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਅਜੁ ਕਿ ਕਲਿ ॥

घड़ी कि मुहति कि चलणा खेलणु अजु कि कलि ॥

Gha(rr)ee ki muhati ki chala(nn)aa khela(nn)u aju ki kali ||

In a moment, in an instant, we too must depart. Our play is only for today or tomorrow.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਚਾ ਪਿੜੁ ਮਲਿ ॥੮॥

जिसु तूं मेलहि सो मिलै जाइ सचा पिड़ु मलि ॥८॥

Jisu toonn melahi so milai jaai sachaa pi(rr)u mali ||8||

But those whom You unite, Lord, are united with You; they obtain a seat in the Arena of Truth. ||8||


ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

बिनु गुर प्रीति न ऊपजै हउमै मैलु न जाइ ॥

Binu gur preeti na upajai haumai mailu na jaai ||

Without the Guru, love does not well up, and the filth of egotism does not depart.

ਸੋਹੰ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥

सोहं आपु पछाणीऐ सबदि भेदि पतीआइ ॥

Sohann aapu pachhaa(nn)eeai sabadi bhedi pateeaai ||

One who recognizes within himself that, ""He is me"", and who is pierced through by the Shabad, is satisfied.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੯॥

गुरमुखि आपु पछाणीऐ अवर कि करे कराइ ॥९॥

Guramukhi aapu pachhaa(nn)eeai avar ki kare karaai ||9||

When one becomes Gurmukh and realizes his own self, what more is there left to do or have done? ||9||


ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥

मिलिआ का किआ मेलीऐ सबदि मिले पतीआइ ॥

Miliaa kaa kiaa meleeai sabadi mile pateeaai ||

Why speak of union to those who are already united with the Lord? Receiving the Shabad, they are satisfied.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

मनमुखि सोझी ना पवै वीछुड़ि चोटा खाइ ॥

Manamukhi sojhee naa pavai veechhu(rr)i chotaa khaai ||

The self-willed manmukhs do not understand; separated from Him, they endure beatings.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥੧੧॥

नानक दरु घरु एकु है अवरु न दूजी जाइ ॥१०॥११॥

Naanak daru gharu eku hai avaru na doojee jaai ||10||11||

O Nanak, there is only the one door to His Home; there is no other place at all. ||10||11||

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਭੂਲੀ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਇ ॥

मनमुखि भुलै भुलाईऐ भूली ठउर न काइ ॥

Manamukhi bhulai bhulaaeeai bhoolee thaur na kaai ||

The self-willed manmukhs wander around, deluded and deceived. They find no place of rest.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਈ ਅੰਧੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

गुर बिनु को न दिखावई अंधी आवै जाइ ॥

Gur binu ko na dikhaavaee anddhee aavai jaai ||

Without the Guru, no one is shown the Way. Like the blind, they continue coming and going.

ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

गिआन पदारथु खोइआ ठगिआ मुठा जाइ ॥१॥

Giaan padaarathu khoiaa thagiaa muthaa jaai ||1||

Having lost the treasure of spiritual wisdom, they depart, defrauded and plundered. ||1||


ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥

बाबा माइआ भरमि भुलाइ ॥

Baabaa maaiaa bharami bhulaai ||

O Baba, Maya deceives with its illusion.

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਪਿਰ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

भरमि भुली डोहागणी ना पिर अंकि समाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Bharami bhulee dohaaga(nn)ee naa pir ankki samaai ||1|| rahaau ||

Deceived by doubt, the discarded bride is not received into the Lap of her Beloved. ||1|| Pause ||


ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

भूली फिरै दिसंतरी भूली ग्रिहु तजि जाइ ॥

Bhoolee phirai disanttaree bhoolee grihu taji jaai ||

The deceived bride wanders around in foreign lands; she leaves, and abandons her own home.

ਭੂਲੀ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਥਲਿ ਚੜੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥

भूली डूंगरि थलि चड़ै भरमै मनु डोलाइ ॥

Bhoolee doonggari thali cha(rr)ai bharamai manu dolaai ||

Deceived, she climbs the plateaus and mountains; her mind wavers in doubt.

ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੨॥

धुरहु विछुंनी किउ मिलै गरबि मुठी बिललाइ ॥२॥

Dhurahu vichhunnee kiu milai garabi muthee bilalaai ||2||

Separated from the Primal Being, how can she meet with Him again? Plundered by pride, she cries out and bewails. ||2||


ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

विछुड़िआ गुरु मेलसी हरि रसि नाम पिआरि ॥

Vichhu(rr)iaa guru melasee hari rasi naam piaari ||

The Guru unites the separated ones with the Lord again, through the love of the Delicious Name of the Lord.

ਸਾਚਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਘਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਿ ॥

साचि सहजि सोभा घणी हरि गुण नाम अधारि ॥

Saachi sahaji sobhaa gha(nn)ee hari gu(nn) naam adhaari ||

Through truth and intuitive poise, great honor is obtained, with the Support of the Naam and the Glory of the Lord.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੩॥

जिउ भावै तिउ रखु तूं मै तुझ बिनु कवनु भतारु ॥३॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu rakhu toonn mai tujh binu kavanu bhataaru ||3||

As it pleases You, Lord, please save and protect me. Without You, O my Husband Lord, who else is there for me? ||3||


ਅਖਰ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਭੇਖੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥

अखर पड़ि पड़ि भुलीऐ भेखी बहुतु अभिमानु ॥

Akhar pa(rr)i pa(rr)i bhuleeai bhekhee bahutu abhimaanu ||

Reading their books over and over again, people continue making mistakes; they are so proud of their religious robes.

ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥

तीरथ नाता किआ करे मन महि मैलु गुमानु ॥

Teerath naataa kiaa kare man mahi mailu gumaanu ||

But what is the use of bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, when the filth of stubborn pride is within the mind?

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥੪॥

गुर बिनु किनि समझाईऐ मनु राजा सुलतानु ॥४॥

Gur binu kini samajhaaeeai manu raajaa sulataanu ||4||

Other than the Guru, who can explain that within the mind is the Lord, the King, the Emperor? ||4||


ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

प्रेम पदारथु पाईऐ गुरमुखि ततु वीचारु ॥

Prem padaarathu paaeeai guramukhi tatu veechaaru ||

The Treasure of the Lord's Love is obtained by the Gurmukh, who contemplates the essence of reality.

ਸਾ ਧਨ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

सा धन आपु गवाइआ गुर कै सबदि सीगारु ॥

Saa dhan aapu gavaaiaa gur kai sabadi seegaaru ||

The bride eradicates her selfishness, and adorns herself with the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਘਰ ਹੀ ਸੋ ਪਿਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੫॥

घर ही सो पिरु पाइआ गुर कै हेति अपारु ॥५॥

Ghar hee so piru paaiaa gur kai heti apaaru ||5||

Within her own home, she finds her Husband, through infinite love for the Guru. ||5||


ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

गुर की सेवा चाकरी मनु निरमलु सुखु होइ ॥

Gur kee sevaa chaakaree manu niramalu sukhu hoi ||

Applying oneself to the service of the Guru, the mind is purified, and peace is obtained.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਖੋਇ ॥

गुर का सबदु मनि वसिआ हउमै विचहु खोइ ॥

Gur kaa sabadu mani vasiaa haumai vichahu khoi ||

The Word of the Guru's Shabad abides within the mind, and egotism is eliminated from within.

ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਲਾਭੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

नामु पदारथु पाइआ लाभु सदा मनि होइ ॥६॥

Naamu padaarathu paaiaa laabhu sadaa mani hoi ||6||

The Treasure of the Naam is acquired, and the mind reaps the lasting profit. ||6||


ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਲਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

करमि मिलै ता पाईऐ आपि न लइआ जाइ ॥

Karami milai taa paaeeai aapi na laiaa jaai ||

If He grants His Grace, then we obtain it. We cannot find it by our own efforts.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਗਿ ਰਹੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥

गुर की चरणी लगि रहु विचहु आपु गवाइ ॥

Gur kee chara(nn)ee lagi rahu vichahu aapu gavaai ||

Remain attached to the Feet of the Guru, and eradicate selfishness from within.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਸਚੋ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੭॥

सचे सेती रतिआ सचो पलै पाइ ॥७॥

Sache setee ratiaa sacho palai paai ||7||

Attuned to Truth, you shall obtain the True One. ||7||


ਭੁਲਣ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

भुलण अंदरि सभु को अभुलु गुरू करतारु ॥

Bhula(nn) anddari sabhu ko abhulu guroo karataaru ||

Everyone makes mistakes; only the Guru and the Creator are infallible.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

गुरमति मनु समझाइआ लागा तिसै पिआरु ॥

Guramati manu samajhaaiaa laagaa tisai piaaru ||

One who instructs his mind with the Guru's Teachings comes to embrace love for the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੧੨॥

नानक साचु न वीसरै मेले सबदु अपारु ॥८॥१२॥

Naanak saachu na veesarai mele sabadu apaaru ||8||12||

O Nanak, do not forget the Truth; you shall receive the Infinite Word of the Shabad. ||8||12||

Trisanaa maaiaa moha(nn)ee sut banddhap ghar naari ||

The enticing desire for Maya leads people to become emotionally attached to their children, relatives, households and spouses.

ਧਨਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਲਬਿ ਲੋਭਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥

धनि जोबनि जगु ठगिआ लबि लोभि अहंकारि ॥

Dhani jobani jagu thagiaa labi lobhi ahankkaari ||

The world is deceived and plundered by riches, youth, greed and egotism.

ਮੋਹ ਠਗਉਲੀ ਹਉ ਮੁਈ ਸਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

मोह ठगउली हउ मुई सा वरतै संसारि ॥१॥

Moh thagaulee hau muee saa varatai sanssaari ||1||

The drug of emotional attachment has destroyed me, as it has destroyed the whole world. ||1||


ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

मेरे प्रीतमा मै तुझ बिनु अवरु न कोइ ॥

Mere preetamaa mai tujh binu avaru na koi ||

O my Beloved, I have no one except You.

ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मै तुझ बिनु अवरु न भावई तूं भावहि सुखु होइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mai tujh binu avaru na bhaavaee toonn bhaavahi sukhu hoi ||1|| rahaau ||

Without You, nothing else pleases me. Loving You, I am at peace. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਰੰਗ ਸਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥

नामु सालाही रंग सिउ गुर कै सबदि संतोखु ॥

Naamu saalaahee rangg siu gur kai sabadi santtokhu ||

I sing the Praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, with love; I am content with the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਕੂੜਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਨ ਵੇਖੁ ॥

जो दीसै सो चलसी कूड़ा मोहु न वेखु ॥

Jo deesai so chalasee koo(rr)aa mohu na vekhu ||

Whatever is seen shall pass away. So do not be attached to this false show.

ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਊ ਆਇਆ ਨਿਤ ਚਲਦਾ ਸਾਥੁ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੨॥

वाट वटाऊ आइआ नित चलदा साथु देखु ॥२॥

Vaat vataau aaiaa nit chaladaa saathu dekhu ||2||

Like a traveler in his travels, you have come. Behold the caravan leaving each day. ||2||


ਆਖਣਿ ਆਖਹਿ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

आखणि आखहि केतड़े गुर बिनु बूझ न होइ ॥

Aakha(nn)i aakhahi keta(rr)e gur binu boojh na hoi ||

Many preach sermons, but without the Guru, understanding is not obtained.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਰਪੈ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

नामु वडाई जे मिलै सचि रपै पति होइ ॥

Naamu vadaaee je milai sachi rapai pati hoi ||

If someone receives the Glory of the Naam, he is attuned to truth and blessed with honor.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਖੋਟਾ ਖਰਾ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥

जो तुधु भावहि से भले खोटा खरा न कोइ ॥३॥

Jo tudhu bhaavahi se bhale khotaa kharaa na koi ||3||

Those who are pleasing to You are good; no one is counterfeit or genuine. ||3||


ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

गुर सरणाई छुटीऐ मनमुख खोटी रासि ॥

Gur sara(nn)aaee chhuteeai manamukh khotee raasi ||

In the Guru's Sanctuary we are saved. The assets of the self-willed manmukhs are false.

ਅਸਟ ਧਾਤੁ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਕੀ ਘੜੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਗਾਸਿ ॥

असट धातु पातिसाह की घड़ीऐ सबदि विगासि ॥

Asat dhaatu paatisaah kee gha(rr)eeai sabadi vigaasi ||

The eight metals of the King are made into coins by the Word of His Shabad.

ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੇ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਪਵੈ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੪॥

आपे परखे पारखू पवै खजानै रासि ॥४॥

Aape parakhe paarakhoo pavai khajaanai raasi ||4||

The Assayer Himself assays them, and He places the genuine ones in His Treasury. ||4||


ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਸਭ ਡਿਠੀ ਠੋਕਿ ਵਜਾਇ ॥

तेरी कीमति ना पवै सभ डिठी ठोकि वजाइ ॥

Teree keemati naa pavai sabh dithee thoki vajaai ||

Your Value cannot be appraised; I have seen and tested everything.

ਕਹਣੈ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

कहणै हाथ न लभई सचि टिकै पति पाइ ॥

Kaha(nn)ai haath na labhaee sachi tikai pati paai ||

By speaking, His Depth cannot be found. Abiding in truth, honor is obtained.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥

गुरमति तूं सालाहणा होरु कीमति कहणु न जाइ ॥५॥

Guramati toonn saalaaha(nn)aa horu keemati kaha(nn)u na jaai ||5||

Through the Guru's Teachings, I praise You; otherwise, I cannot describe Your Value. ||5||


ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਾਦੁ ॥

जितु तनि नामु न भावई तितु तनि हउमै वादु ॥

Jitu tani naamu na bhaavaee titu tani haumai vaadu ||

That body which does not appreciate the Naam-that body is infested with egotism and conflict.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥

गुर बिनु गिआनु न पाईऐ बिखिआ दूजा सादु ॥

Gur binu giaanu na paaeeai bikhiaa doojaa saadu ||

Without the Guru, spiritual wisdom is not obtained; other tastes are poison.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੀਕਾ ਸਾਦੁ ॥੬॥

बिनु गुण कामि न आवई माइआ फीका सादु ॥६॥

Binu gu(nn) kaami na aavaee maaiaa pheekaa saadu ||6||

Without virtue, nothing is of any use. The taste of Maya is bland and insipid. ||6||


ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਆਸਾ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਖਾਇ ॥

आसा अंदरि जमिआ आसा रस कस खाइ ॥

Aasaa anddari jammiaa aasaa ras kas khaai ||

Through desire, people are cast into the womb and reborn. Through desire, they taste the sweet and sour flavors.

ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

आसा बंधि चलाईऐ मुहे मुहि चोटा खाइ ॥

Aasaa banddhi chalaaeeai muhe muhi chotaa khaai ||

Bound by desire, they are led on, beaten and struck on their faces and mouths.

ਅਵਗਣਿ ਬਧਾ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਛੂਟੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੭॥

अवगणि बधा मारीऐ छूटै गुरमति नाइ ॥७॥

Avaga(nn)i badhaa maareeai chhootai guramati naai ||7||

Bound and gagged and assaulted by evil, they are released only through the Name, through the Guru's Teachings. ||7||


ਸਰਬੇ ਥਾਈ ਏਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ॥

सरबे थाई एकु तूं जिउ भावै तिउ राखु ॥

Sarabe thaaee eku toonn jiu bhaavai tiu raakhu ||

In all places, You are the One and Only. As it pleases You, Lord, please save and protect me!

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਲੋ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਖੁ ॥

गुरमति साचा मनि वसै नामु भलो पति साखु ॥

Guramati saachaa mani vasai naamu bhalo pati saakhu ||

Through the Guru's Teachings, the True One abides within the mind. The Companionship of the Naam brings the most excellent honor.

ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚੁ ਭਾਖੁ ॥੮॥

हउमै रोगु गवाईऐ सबदि सचै सचु भाखु ॥८॥

Haumai rogu gavaaeeai sabadi sachai sachu bhaakhu ||8||

Eradicate the disease of egotism, and chant the True Shabad, the Word of the True Lord. ||8||


ਆਕਾਸੀ ਪਾਤਾਲਿ ਤੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

आकासी पातालि तूं त्रिभवणि रहिआ समाइ ॥

Aakaasee paataali toonn tribhava(nn)i rahiaa samaai ||

You are pervading throughout the Akaashic Ethers, the nether regions and the three worlds.

ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਉ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

आपे भगती भाउ तूं आपे मिलहि मिलाइ ॥

Aape bhagatee bhaau toonn aape milahi milaai ||

You Yourself are bhakti, loving devotional worship. You Yourself unite us in Union with Yourself.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੯॥੧੩॥

नानक नामु न वीसरै जिउ भावै तिवै रजाइ ॥९॥१३॥

Naanak naamu na veesarai jiu bhaavai tivai rajaai ||9||13||

O Nanak, may I never forget the Naam! As is Your Pleasure, so is Your Will. ||9||13||


ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਕਰੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

राम नामि मनु बेधिआ अवरु कि करी वीचारु ॥

Raam naami manu bedhiaa avaru ki karee veechaaru ||

My mind is pierced through by the Name of the Lord. What else should I contemplate?

ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਤਉ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

सबद सुरति सुखु ऊपजै प्रभ रातउ सुख सारु ॥

Sabad surati sukhu upajai prbh raatau sukh saaru ||

Focusing your awareness on the Shabad, happiness wells up. Attuned to God, the most excellent peace is found.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखु तूं मै हरि नामु अधारु ॥१॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhu toonn mai hari naamu adhaaru ||1||

As it pleases You, please save me, Lord. The Name of the Lord is my Support. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਾਚੀ ਖਸਮ ਰਜਾਇ ॥

मन रे साची खसम रजाइ ॥

Man re saachee khasam rajaai ||

O mind, the Will of our Lord and Master is true.

ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਸੀਗਾਰਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जिनि तनु मनु साजि सीगारिआ तिसु सेती लिव लाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jini tanu manu saaji seegaariaa tisu setee liv laai ||1|| rahaau ||

Focus your love upon the One who created and adorned your body and mind. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤਨੁ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਿ ਹੋਮੀਐ ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਤੋਲਿ ਕਟਾਇ ॥

तनु बैसंतरि होमीऐ इक रती तोलि कटाइ ॥

Tanu baisanttari homeeai ik ratee toli kataai ||

If I cut my body into pieces, and burn them in the fire,

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਧਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥

तनु मनु समधा जे करी अनदिनु अगनि जलाइ ॥

Tanu manu samadhaa je karee anadinu agani jalaai ||

And if I make my body and mind into firewood, and night and day burn them in the fire,

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਪੁਜਈ ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕੋਟੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

हरि नामै तुलि न पुजई जे लख कोटी करम कमाइ ॥२॥

Hari naamai tuli na pujaee je lakh kotee karam kamaai ||2||

And if I perform hundreds of thousands and millions of religious rituals-still, all these are not equal to the Name of the Lord. ||2||


ਅਰਧ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕਟਾਈਐ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਰਵਤੁ ਧਰਾਇ ॥

अरध सरीरु कटाईऐ सिरि करवतु धराइ ॥

Aradh sareeru kataaeeai siri karavatu dharaai ||

If my body were cut in half, if a saw was put to my head,

ਤਨੁ ਹੈਮੰਚਲਿ ਗਾਲੀਐ ਭੀ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

तनु हैमंचलि गालीऐ भी मन ते रोगु न जाइ ॥

Tanu haimancchali gaaleeai bhee man te rogu na jaai ||

And if my body were frozen in the Himalayas-even then, my mind would not be free of disease.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਪੁਜਈ ਸਭ ਡਿਠੀ ਠੋਕਿ ਵਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

हरि नामै तुलि न पुजई सभ डिठी ठोकि वजाइ ॥३॥

Hari naamai tuli na pujaee sabh dithee thoki vajaai ||3||

None of these are equal to the Name of the Lord. I have seen and tried and tested them all. ||3||


ਕੰਚਨ ਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਦਤੁ ਕਰੀ ਬਹੁ ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਦਾਨੁ ॥

कंचन के कोट दतु करी बहु हैवर गैवर दानु ॥

Kancchan ke kot datu karee bahu haivar gaivar daanu ||

If I made a donation of castles of gold, and gave lots of fine horses and wondrous elephants in charity,

ਭੂਮਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਗਊਆ ਘਣੀ ਭੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਰਬੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥

भूमि दानु गऊआ घणी भी अंतरि गरबु गुमानु ॥

Bhoomi daanu gauaa gha(nn)ee bhee anttari garabu gumaanu ||

And if I made donations of land and cows-even then, pride and ego would still be within me.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਸਚੁ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੪॥

राम नामि मनु बेधिआ गुरि दीआ सचु दानु ॥४॥

Raam naami manu bedhiaa guri deeaa sachu daanu ||4||

The Name of the Lord has pierced my mind; the Guru has given me this true gift. ||4||


ਮਨਹਠ ਬੁਧੀ ਕੇਤੀਆ ਕੇਤੇ ਬੇਦ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥

मनहठ बुधी केतीआ केते बेद बीचार ॥

Manahath budhee keteeaa kete bed beechaar ||

There are so many stubborn-minded intelligent people, and so many who contemplate the Vedas.

ਕੇਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਜੀਅ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

केते बंधन जीअ के गुरमुखि मोख दुआर ॥

Kete banddhan jeea ke guramukhi mokh duaar ||

There are so many entanglements for the soul. Only as Gurmukh do we find the Gate of Liberation.

ਸਚਹੁ ਓਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਉਪਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੫॥

सचहु ओरै सभु को उपरि सचु आचारु ॥५॥

Sachahu orai sabhu ko upari sachu aachaaru ||5||

Truth is higher than everything; but higher still is truthful living. ||5||


ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਊਚਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਨੀਚੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

सभु को ऊचा आखीऐ नीचु न दीसै कोइ ॥

Sabhu ko uchaa aakheeai neechu na deesai koi ||

Call everyone exalted; no one seems lowly.

ਇਕਨੈ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਸਾਜਿਐ ਇਕੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਇ ॥

इकनै भांडे साजिऐ इकु चानणु तिहु लोइ ॥

Ikanai bhaande saajiai iku chaana(nn)u tihu loi ||

The One Lord has fashioned the vessels, and His One Light pervades the three worlds.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਧੁਰਿ ਬਖਸ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੬॥

करमि मिलै सचु पाईऐ धुरि बखस न मेटै कोइ ॥६॥

Karami milai sachu paaeeai dhuri bakhas na metai koi ||6||

Receiving His Grace, we obtain Truth. No one can erase His Primal Blessing. ||6||


ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਾਧੂ ਜਨੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

साधु मिलै साधू जनै संतोखु वसै गुर भाइ ॥

Saadhu milai saadhoo janai santtokhu vasai gur bhaai ||

When one Holy person meets another Holy person, they abide in contentment, through the Love of the Guru.

ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

अकथ कथा वीचारीऐ जे सतिगुर माहि समाइ ॥

Akath kathaa veechaareeai je satigur maahi samaai ||

They contemplate the Unspoken Speech, merging in absorption in the True Guru.

ਪੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੭॥

पी अम्रितु संतोखिआ दरगहि पैधा जाइ ॥७॥

Pee ammmritu santtokhiaa daragahi paidhaa jaai ||7||

Drinking in the Ambrosial Nectar, they are contented; they go to the Court of the Lord in robes of honor. ||7||


ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਾਜੈ ਕਿੰਗੁਰੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

घटि घटि वाजै किंगुरी अनदिनु सबदि सुभाइ ॥

Ghati ghati vaajai kingguree anadinu sabadi subhaai ||

In each and every heart the Music of the Lord's Flute vibrates, night and day, with sublime love for the Shabad.

ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕਉ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥

विरले कउ सोझी पई गुरमुखि मनु समझाइ ॥

Virale kau sojhee paee guramukhi manu samajhaai ||

Only those few who become Gurmukh understand this by instructing their minds.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਛੂਟੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੪॥

नानक नामु न वीसरै छूटै सबदु कमाइ ॥८॥१४॥

Naanak naamu na veesarai chhootai sabadu kamaai ||8||14||

O Nanak, do not forget the Naam. Practicing the Shabad you shall be saved. ||8||14||


ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਚਿਤੇ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਧਉਲਹਰ ਬਗੇ ਬੰਕ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

चिते दिसहि धउलहर बगे बंक दुआर ॥

Chite disahi dhaulahar bage bankk duaar ||

There are painted mansions to behold, white-washed, with beautiful doors;

ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਖੁਸੀ ਉਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਹੇਤਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

करि मन खुसी उसारिआ दूजै हेति पिआरि ॥

Kari man khusee usaariaa doojai heti piaari ||

They were constructed to give pleasure to the mind, but this is only for the sake of the love of duality.

ਅੰਦਰੁ ਖਾਲੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਤਨੁ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

अंदरु खाली प्रेम बिनु ढहि ढेरी तनु छारु ॥१॥

Anddaru khaalee prem binu dhahi dheree tanu chhaaru ||1||

The inner being is empty without love. The body shall crumble into a heap of ashes. ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

भाई रे तनु धनु साथि न होइ ॥

Bhaaee re tanu dhanu saathi na hoi ||

O Siblings of Destiny, this body and wealth shall not go along with you.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

राम नामु धनु निरमलो गुरु दाति करे प्रभु सोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raam naamu dhanu niramalo guru daati kare prbhu soi ||1|| rahaau ||

The Lord's Name is the pure wealth; through the Guru, God bestows this gift. ||1|| Pause ||


ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੋ ਜੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

राम नामु धनु निरमलो जे देवै देवणहारु ॥

Raam naamu dhanu niramalo je devai deva(nn)ahaaru ||

The Lord's Name is the pure wealth; it is given only by the Giver.

ਆਗੈ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੇਲੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

आगै पूछ न होवई जिसु बेली गुरु करतारु ॥

Aagai poochh na hovaee jisu belee guru karataaru ||

One who has the Guru, the Creator, as his Friend, shall not be questioned hereafter.

ਆਪਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਛੁਟੀਐ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

आपि छडाए छुटीऐ आपे बखसणहारु ॥२॥

Aapi chhadaae chhuteeai aape bakhasa(nn)ahaaru ||2||

He Himself delivers those who are delivered. He Himself is the Forgiver. ||2||


ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਧੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥

मनमुखु जाणै आपणे धीआ पूत संजोगु ॥

Manamukhu jaa(nn)ai aapa(nn)e dheeaa poot sanjjogu ||

The self-willed manmukh looks upon his daughters, sons and relatives as his own.

ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

नारी देखि विगासीअहि नाले हरखु सु सोगु ॥

Naaree dekhi vigaaseeahi naale harakhu su sogu ||

Gazing upon his wife, he is pleased. But along with happiness, they bring grief.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि सबदि रंगावले अहिनिसि हरि रसु भोगु ॥३॥

Guramukhi sabadi ranggaavale ahinisi hari rasu bhogu ||3||

The Gurmukhs are attuned to the Word of the Shabad. Day and night, they enjoy the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||3||


ਚਿਤੁ ਚਲੈ ਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਵਣੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥

चितु चलै वितु जावणो साकत डोलि डोलाइ ॥

Chitu chalai vitu jaava(nn)o saakat doli dolaai ||

The consciousness of the wicked, faithless cynics wanders around in search of transitory wealth, unstable and distracted.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥

बाहरि ढूंढि विगुचीऐ घर महि वसतु सुथाइ ॥

Baahari dhoonddhi vigucheeai ghar mahi vasatu suthaai ||

Searching outside of themselves, they are ruined; the object of their search is in that sacred place within the home of the heart.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥

मनमुखि हउमै करि मुसी गुरमुखि पलै पाइ ॥४॥

Manamukhi haumai kari musee guramukhi palai paai ||4||

The self-willed manmukhs, in their ego, miss it; the Gurmukhs receive it in their laps. ||4||


ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

साकत निरगुणिआरिआ आपणा मूलु पछाणु ॥

Saakat niragu(nn)iaariaa aapa(nn)aa moolu pachhaa(nn)u ||

You worthless, faithless cynic-recognize your own origin!

ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੋ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣੁ ॥

रकतु बिंदु का इहु तनो अगनी पासि पिराणु ॥

Rakatu binddu kaa ihu tano aganee paasi piraa(nn)u ||

This body is made of blood and semen. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end.

ਪਵਣੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੫॥

पवणै कै वसि देहुरी मसतकि सचु नीसाणु ॥५॥

Pava(nn)ai kai vasi dehuree masataki sachu neesaa(nn)u ||5||

The body is under the power of the breath, according to the True Sign inscribed upon your forehead. ||5||


ਬਹੁਤਾ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮੁਆ ਨ ਲੋੜੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

बहुता जीवणु मंगीऐ मुआ न लोड़ै कोइ ॥

Bahutaa jeeva(nn)u manggeeai muaa na lo(rr)ai koi ||

Everyone begs for a long life-no one wishes to die.

ਸੁਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥

सुख जीवणु तिसु आखीऐ जिसु गुरमुखि वसिआ सोइ ॥

Sukh jeeva(nn)u tisu aakheeai jisu guramukhi vasiaa soi ||

A life of peace and comfort comes to that Gurmukh, within whom God dwells.

ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

नाम विहूणे किआ गणी जिसु हरि गुर दरसु न होइ ॥६॥

Naam vihoo(nn)e kiaa ga(nn)ee jisu hari gur darasu na hoi ||6||

Without the Naam, what good those who do not have the Blessed Vision, the Darshan of the Lord and Guru? ||6||


ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

जिउ सुपनै निसि भुलीऐ जब लगि निद्रा होइ ॥

Jiu supanai nisi bhuleeai jab lagi nidraa hoi ||

In their dreams at night, people wander around as long as they sleep;

ਇਉ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥

इउ सरपनि कै वसि जीअड़ा अंतरि हउमै दोइ ॥

Iu sarapani kai vasi jeea(rr)aa anttari haumai doi ||

Just so, they are under the power of the snake Maya, as long as their hearts are filled with ego and duality.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੭॥

गुरमति होइ वीचारीऐ सुपना इहु जगु लोइ ॥७॥

Guramati hoi veechaareeai supanaa ihu jagu loi ||7||

Through the Guru's Teachings, they come to understand and see that this world is just a dream. ||7||


ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੂਧੈ ਮਾਇ ॥

अगनि मरै जलु पाईऐ जिउ बारिक दूधै माइ ॥

Agani marai jalu paaeeai jiu baarik doodhai maai ||

As thirst is quenched with water, and the baby is satisfied with mother's milk,

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਸੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮੀਨੁ ਮਰਾਇ ॥

बिनु जल कमल सु ना थीऐ बिनु जल मीनु मराइ ॥

Binu jal kamal su naa theeai binu jal meenu maraai ||

And as the lotus does not exist without water, and as the fish dies without water

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੫॥

नानक गुरमुखि हरि रसि मिलै जीवा हरि गुण गाइ ॥८॥१५॥

Naanak guramukhi hari rasi milai jeevaa hari gu(nn) gaai ||8||15||

-O Nanak, so does the Gurmukh live, receiving the Sublime Essence of the Lord, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||8||15||


ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡਰੀਆਸੁ ॥

डूंगरु देखि डरावणो पेईअड़ै डरीआसु ॥

Doonggaru dekhi daraava(nn)o peeea(rr)ai dareeaasu ||

Beholding the terrifying mountain in this world of my father's home, I am terrified.

ਊਚਉ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਗਾਖੜੋ ਨਾ ਪਉੜੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਾਸੁ ॥

ऊचउ परबतु गाखड़ो ना पउड़ी तितु तासु ॥

Uchau parabatu gaakha(rr)o naa pau(rr)ee titu taasu ||

It is so difficult to climb this high mountain; there is no ladder which reaches up there.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਰੀਆਸੁ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि अंतरि जाणिआ गुरि मेली तरीआसु ॥१॥

Guramukhi anttari jaa(nn)iaa guri melee tareeaasu ||1||

But as Gurmukh, I know that it is within my self; the Guru has brought me to Union, and so I cross over. ||1||


ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਂਉ ॥

भाई रे भवजलु बिखमु डरांउ ॥

Bhaaee re bhavajalu bikhamu daraanu ||

O Siblings of Destiny, the terrifying world-ocean is so difficult to cross-I am terrified!

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पूरा सतिगुरु रसि मिलै गुरु तारे हरि नाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Pooraa satiguru rasi milai guru taare hari naau ||1|| rahaau ||

The Perfect True Guru, in His Pleasure, has met with me; the Guru has saved me, through the Name of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||


ਚਲਾ ਚਲਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

चला चला जे करी जाणा चलणहारु ॥

Chalaa chalaa je karee jaa(nn)aa chala(nn)ahaaru ||

I may say, ""I am going, I am going"", but I know that, in the end, I must really go.

ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

जो आइआ सो चलसी अमरु सु गुरु करतारु ॥

Jo aaiaa so chalasee amaru su guru karataaru ||

Whoever comes must also go. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal.

ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥

भी सचा सालाहणा सचै थानि पिआरु ॥२॥

Bhee sachaa saalaaha(nn)aa sachai thaani piaaru ||2||

So praise the True One continually, and love His Place of Truth. ||2||


ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥

दर घर महला सोहणे पके कोट हजार ॥

Dar ghar mahalaa soha(nn)e pake kot hajaar ||

Beautiful gates, houses and palaces, solidly built forts,

ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

हसती घोड़े पाखरे लसकर लख अपार ॥

Hasatee gho(rr)e paakhare lasakar lakh apaar ||

Elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥

किस ही नालि न चलिआ खपि खपि मुए असार ॥३॥

Kis hee naali na chaliaa khapi khapi mue asaar ||3||

-none of these will go along with anyone in the end, and yet, the fools bother themselves to exhaustion with these, and then die. ||3||


ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥

सुइना रुपा संचीऐ मालु जालु जंजालु ॥

Suinaa rupaa sanccheeai maalu jaalu janjjaalu ||

You may gather gold and sliver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.

ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥

सभ जग महि दोही फेरीऐ बिनु नावै सिरि कालु ॥

Sabh jag mahi dohee phereeai binu naavai siri kaalu ||

You may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Name, death hovers over your head.

ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥

पिंडु पड़ै जीउ खेलसी बदफैली किआ हालु ॥४॥

Pinddu pa(rr)ai jeeu khelasee badaphailee kiaa haalu ||4||

When the body falls, the play of life is over; what shall be the condition of the evil-doers then? ||4||


ਪੁਤਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਐ ਨਾਰੀ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰ ॥

पुता देखि विगसीऐ नारी सेज भतार ॥

Putaa dekhi vigaseeai naaree sej bhataar ||

The husband is delighted seeing his sons, and his wife upon his bed.

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

चोआ चंदनु लाईऐ कापड़ु रूपु सीगारु ॥

Choaa chanddanu laaeeai kaapa(rr)u roopu seegaaru ||

He applies sandalwood and scented oils, and dresses himself in his beautiful clothes.

ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੫॥

खेहू खेह रलाईऐ छोडि चलै घर बारु ॥५॥

Khehoo kheh ralaaeeai chhodi chalai ghar baaru ||5||

But dust shall mix with dust, and he shall depart, leaving hearth and home behind. ||5||


ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਈਐ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਉ ਕਿ ਖਾਨੁ ॥

महर मलूक कहाईऐ राजा राउ कि खानु ॥

Mahar malook kahaaeeai raajaa raau ki khaanu ||

He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord;

ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਉ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਜਲਿ ਬਲੀਐ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥

चउधरी राउ सदाईऐ जलि बलीऐ अभिमान ॥

Chaudharee raau sadaaeeai jali baleeai abhimaan ||

He may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥

मनमुखि नामु विसारिआ जिउ डवि दधा कानु ॥६॥

Manamukhi naamu visaariaa jiu davi dadhaa kaanu ||6||

The self-willed manmukh has forgotten the Naam. He is like straw, burning in the forest fire. ||6||


ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

हउमै करि करि जाइसी जो आइआ जग माहि ॥

Haumai kari kari jaaisee jo aaiaa jag maahi ||

Whoever comes into the world and indulges in ego, must depart.

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਜਲ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਹ ਸੁਆਹਿ ॥

सभु जगु काजल कोठड़ी तनु मनु देह सुआहि ॥

Sabhu jagu kaajal kotha(rr)ee tanu manu deh suaahi ||

The whole world is a store-house of lamp-black; the body and mind are blackened with it.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੭॥

गुरि राखे से निरमले सबदि निवारी भाहि ॥७॥

Guri raakhe se niramale sabadi nivaaree bhaahi ||7||

Those who are saved by the Guru are immaculate and pure; through the Word of the Shabad, they extinguish the fire of desire. ||7||


ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥

नानक तरीऐ सचि नामि सिरि साहा पातिसाहु ॥

Naanak tareeai sachi naami siri saahaa paatisaahu ||

O Nanak, they swim across with the True Name of the Lord, the King above the heads of kings.
