ੴ सति नामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुरप्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari sati naamu karataa purakhu nirabhau niravairu akaal moorati ajoonee saibhann guraprsaadi ||

ਕੋਈ ਪੜਤਾ ਸਹਸਾਕਿਰਤਾ ਕੋਈ ਪੜੈ ਪੁਰਾਨਾ ॥

कोई पड़ता सहसाकिरता कोई पड़ै पुराना ॥

Koee pa(rr)ataa sahasaakirataa koee pa(rr)ai puraanaa ||

Some read the Sanskrit scriptures, and some read the Puraanas.

ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥

कोई नामु जपै जपमाली लागै तिसै धिआना ॥

Koee naamu japai japamaalee laagai tisai dhiaanaa ||

Some meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and chant it on their malas, focusing on it in meditation.

ਅਬ ਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥

अब ही कब ही किछू न जाना तेरा एको नामु पछाना ॥१॥

Ab hee kab hee kichhoo na jaanaa teraa eko naamu pachhaanaa ||1||

I know nothing, now or ever; I recognize only Your One Name, Lord. ||1||


ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਵਨ ਗਤੇ ॥

न जाणा हरे मेरी कवन गते ॥

Na jaa(nn)aa hare meree kavan gate ||

I do not know, Lord, what my condition shall be.

ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਪਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हम मूरख अगिआन सरनि प्रभ तेरी करि किरपा राखहु मेरी लाज पते ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ham moorakh agiaan sarani prbh teree kari kirapaa raakhahu meree laaj pate ||1|| rahaau ||

I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your Sanctuary, God. Please, save my honor and my self-respect. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਬਹੂ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਊਭਿ ਚੜਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥

कबहू जीअड़ा ऊभि चड़तु है कबहू जाइ पइआले ॥

Kabahoo jeea(rr)aa ubhi cha(rr)atu hai kabahoo jaai paiaale ||

Sometimes, the soul soars high in the heavens, and sometimes it falls to the depths of the nether regions.

ਲੋਭੀ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੨॥

लोभी जीअड़ा थिरु न रहतु है चारे कुंडा भाले ॥२॥

Lobhee jeea(rr)aa thiru na rahatu hai chaare kunddaa bhaale ||2||

The greedy soul does not remain stable; it searches in the four directions. ||2||


ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਹਿ ਮਾਈ ॥

मरणु लिखाइ मंडल महि आए जीवणु साजहि माई ॥

Mara(nn)u likhaai manddal mahi aae jeeva(nn)u saajahi maaee ||

With death pre-ordained, the soul comes into the world, gathering the riches of life.

ਏਕਿ ਚਲੇ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਤੀ ਆਈ ॥੩॥

एकि चले हम देखह सुआमी भाहि बलंती आई ॥३॥

Eki chale ham dekhah suaamee bhaahi balanttee aaee ||3||

I see that some have already gone, O my Lord and Master; the burning fire is coming closer! ||3||


ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥

न किसी का मीतु न किसी का भाई ना किसै बापु न माई ॥

Na kisee kaa meetu na kisee kaa bhaaee naa kisai baapu na maaee ||

No one has any friend, and no one has any brother; no one has any father or mother.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥

प्रणवति नानक जे तू देवहि अंते होइ सखाई ॥४॥१॥

Pr(nn)avati naanak je too devahi antte hoi sakhaaee ||4||1||

Prays Nanak, if You bless me with Your Name, it shall be my help and support in the end. ||4||1||

ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਸਰਿ ਰਹੀ ॥

सरब जोति तेरी पसरि रही ॥

Sarab joti teree pasari rahee ||

Your Light is prevailing everywhere.

ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਨਰਹਰੀ ॥੧॥

जह जह देखा तह नरहरी ॥१॥

Jah jah dekhaa tah naraharee ||1||

Wherever I look, there I see the Lord. ||1||


ਜੀਵਨ ਤਲਬ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥

जीवन तलब निवारि सुआमी ॥

Jeevan talab nivaari suaamee ||

Please rid me of the desire to live, O my Lord and Master.

ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਗਾਡਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਉਤਰਉ ਪਾਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंध कूपि माइआ मनु गाडिआ किउ करि उतरउ पारि सुआमी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anddh koopi maaiaa manu gaadiaa kiu kari utarau paari suaamee ||1|| rahaau ||

My mind is entangled in the deep dark pit of Maya. How can I cross over, O Lord and Master? ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸਿਆ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

जह भीतरि घट भीतरि बसिआ बाहरि काहे नाही ॥

Jah bheetari ghat bheetari basiaa baahari kaahe naahee ||

He dwells deep within, inside the heart; how can He not be outside as well?

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥

तिन की सार करे नित साहिबु सदा चिंत मन माही ॥२॥

Tin kee saar kare nit saahibu sadaa chintt man maahee ||2||

Our Lord and Master always takes care of us, and keeps us in His thoughts. ||2||


ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

आपे नेड़ै आपे दूरि ॥

Aape ne(rr)ai aape doori ||

He Himself is near at hand, and He is far away.

ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

आपे सरब रहिआ भरपूरि ॥

Aape sarab rahiaa bharapoori ||

He Himself is all-pervading, permeating everywhere.

ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥

सतगुरु मिलै अंधेरा जाइ ॥

Sataguru milai anddheraa jaai ||

Meeting the True Guru, the darkness is dispelled.

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥

जह देखा तह रहिआ समाइ ॥३॥

Jah dekhaa tah rahiaa samaai ||3||

Wherever I look, there I see Him pervading. ||3||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਸਾ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੈਣੀ ਲਾਗਸਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

अंतरि सहसा बाहरि माइआ नैणी लागसि बाणी ॥

Anttari sahasaa baahari maaiaa nai(nn)ee laagasi baa(nn)ee ||

There is doubt within me, and Maya is outside; it hits me in the eyes like an arrow.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਪਰਤਾਪਹਿਗਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੨॥

प्रणवति नानकु दासनि दासा परतापहिगा प्राणी ॥४॥२॥

Pr(nn)avati naanaku daasani daasaa parataapahigaa praa(nn)ee ||4||2||

Prays Nanak, the slave of the Lord's slaves: such a mortal suffers terribly. ||4||2||

ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਕਵਨੁ ਦਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਦਰਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਦਰੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਲਹੈ ॥

जितु दरि वसहि कवनु दरु कहीऐ दरा भीतरि दरु कवनु लहै ॥

Jitu dari vasahi kavanu daru kaheeai daraa bheetari daru kavanu lahai ||

Where is that door, where You live, O Lord? What is that door called? Among all doors, who can find that door?

ਜਿਸੁ ਦਰ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਫਿਰਾ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ਕੋਈ ਆਇ ਕਹੈ ॥੧॥

जिसु दर कारणि फिरा उदासी सो दरु कोई आइ कहै ॥१॥

Jisu dar kaara(nn)i phiraa udaasee so daru koee aai kahai ||1||

For the sake of that door, I wander around sadly, detached from the world; if only someone would come and tell me about that door. ||1||


ਕਿਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ॥

किन बिधि सागरु तरीऐ ॥

Kin bidhi saagaru tareeai ||

How can I cross over the world-ocean?

ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਨਹ ਮਰੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जीवतिआ नह मरीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jeevatiaa nah mareeai ||1|| rahaau ||

While I am living, I cannot be dead. ||1|| Pause ||


ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਵਾਜਾ ਰੋਹੁ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਦੁਇ ਪਟ ਜੜੇ ॥

दुखु दरवाजा रोहु रखवाला आसा अंदेसा दुइ पट जड़े ॥

Dukhu daravaajaa rohu rakhavaalaa aasaa anddesaa dui pat ja(rr)e ||

Pain is the door, and anger is the guard; hope and anxiety are the two shutters.

ਮਾਇਆ ਜਲੁ ਖਾਈ ਪਾਣੀ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਸਤ ਕੈ ਆਸਣਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਰਹੈ ॥੨॥

माइआ जलु खाई पाणी घरु बाधिआ सत कै आसणि पुरखु रहै ॥२॥

Maaiaa jalu khaaee paa(nn)ee gharu baadhiaa sat kai aasa(nn)i purakhu rahai ||2||

Maya is the water in the moat; in the middle of this moat, he has built his home. The Primal Lord sits in the Seat of Truth. ||2||


ਕਿੰਤੇ ਨਾਮਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਤੁਮ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਹਰੇ ॥

किंते नामा अंतु न जाणिआ तुम सरि नाही अवरु हरे ॥

Kintte naamaa anttu na jaa(nn)iaa tum sari naahee avaru hare ||

You have so many Names, Lord, I do not know their limit. There is no other equal to You.

ਊਚਾ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਣਾ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੩॥

ऊचा नही कहणा मन महि रहणा आपे जाणै आपि करे ॥३॥

Uchaa nahee kaha(nn)aa man mahi raha(nn)aa aape jaa(nn)ai aapi kare ||3||

Do not speak out loud - remain in your mind. The Lord Himself knows, and He Himself acts. ||3||


ਜਬ ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਕਹੈ ॥

जब आसा अंदेसा तब ही किउ करि एकु कहै ॥

Jab aasaa anddesaa tab hee kiu kari eku kahai ||

As long as there is hope, there is anxiety; so how can anyone speak of the One Lord?

ਆਸਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੁ ਮਿਲੈ ॥੪॥

आसा भीतरि रहै निरासा तउ नानक एकु मिलै ॥४॥

Aasaa bheetari rahai niraasaa tau naanak eku milai ||4||

In the midst of hope, remain untouched by hope; then, O Nanak, you shall meet the One Lord. ||4||


ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰੀਐ ॥

इन बिधि सागरु तरीऐ ॥

In bidhi saagaru tareeai ||

In this way, you shall cross over the world-ocean.

ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਇਉ ਮਰੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੩॥

जीवतिआ इउ मरीऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ दूजा ॥३॥

Jeevatiaa iu mareeai ||1|| rahaau doojaa ||3||

This is the way to remain dead while yet alive. ||1|| Second Pause ||3||

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਖੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਬਾਜੈ ਲੋਕੁ ਸੁਣੇ ॥

सुरति सबदु साखी मेरी सिंङी बाजै लोकु सुणे ॥

Surati sabadu saakhee meree sin(ng)(ng)ee baajai loku su(nn)e ||

Awareness of the Shabad and the Teachings is my horn; the people hear the sound of its vibrations.

ਪਤੁ ਝੋਲੀ ਮੰਗਣ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜੇ ॥੧॥

पतु झोली मंगण कै ताई भीखिआ नामु पड़े ॥१॥

Patu jholee mangga(nn) kai taaee bheekhiaa naamu pa(rr)e ||1||

Honor is my begging-bowl, and the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the charity I receive. ||1||


ਬਾਬਾ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਜਾਗੈ ॥

बाबा गोरखु जागै ॥

Baabaa gorakhu jaagai ||

O Baba, Gorakh is the Lord of the Universe; He is always awake and aware.

ਗੋਰਖੁ ਸੋ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੋਇ ਉਠਾਲੀ ਕਰਤੇ ਬਾਰ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गोरखु सो जिनि गोइ उठाली करते बार न लागै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Gorakhu so jini goi uthaalee karate baar na laagai ||1|| rahaau ||

He alone is Gorakh, who sustains the earth; He created it in an instant. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਪਵਣਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੀਏ ॥

पाणी प्राण पवणि बंधि राखे चंदु सूरजु मुखि दीए ॥

Paa(nn)ee praa(nn) pava(nn)i banddhi raakhe chanddu sooraju mukhi deee ||

Binding together water and air, He infused the breath of life into the body, and made the lamps of the sun and the moon.

ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਉ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀਨੀ ਏਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੨॥

मरण जीवण कउ धरती दीनी एते गुण विसरे ॥२॥

Mara(nn) jeeva(nn) kau dharatee deenee ete gu(nn) visare ||2||

To die and to live, He gave us the earth, but we have forgotten these blessings. ||2||


ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਅਰੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਪੀਰ ਪੁਰਸ ਬਹੁਤੇਰੇ ॥

सिध साधिक अरु जोगी जंगम पीर पुरस बहुतेरे ॥

Sidh saadhik aru jogee janggam peer puras bahutere ||

There are so many Siddhas, seekers, Yogis, wandering pilgrims, spiritual teachers and good people.

ਜੇ ਤਿਨ ਮਿਲਾ ਤ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਆਖਾ ਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੇ ॥੩॥

जे तिन मिला त कीरति आखा ता मनु सेव करे ॥३॥

Je tin milaa ta keerati aakhaa taa manu sev kare ||3||

If I meet them, I chant the Lord's Praises, and then, my mind serves Him. ||3||


ਕਾਗਦੁ ਲੂਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਘ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੰਗੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਮਲੁ ਰਹੈ ॥

कागदु लूणु रहै घ्रित संगे पाणी कमलु रहै ॥

Kaagadu loo(nn)u rahai ghrit sangge paa(nn)ee kamalu rahai ||

Paper and salt, protected by ghee, remain untouched by water, as the lotus remains unaffected in water.

ਐਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੈ ॥੪॥੪॥

ऐसे भगत मिलहि जन नानक तिन जमु किआ करै ॥४॥४॥

Aise bhagat milahi jan naanak tin jamu kiaa karai ||4||4||

Those who meet with such devotees, O servant Nanak - what can death do to them? ||4||4||

ਸੁਣਿ ਮਾਛਿੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

सुणि माछिंद्रा नानकु बोलै ॥

Su(nn)i maachhinddraa naanaku bolai ||

Listen, Machhindra, to what Nanak says.

ਵਸਗਤਿ ਪੰਚ ਕਰੇ ਨਹ ਡੋਲੈ ॥

वसगति पंच करे नह डोलै ॥

Vasagati pancch kare nah dolai ||

One who subdues the five passions does not waver.

ਐਸੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜੋਗ ਕਉ ਪਾਲੇ ॥

ऐसी जुगति जोग कउ पाले ॥

Aisee jugati jog kau paale ||

One who practices Yoga in such a way,

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

आपि तरै सगले कुल तारे ॥१॥

Aapi tarai sagale kul taare ||1||

Saves himself, and saves all his generations. ||1||


ਸੋ ਅਉਧੂਤੁ ਐਸੀ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

सो अउधूतु ऐसी मति पावै ॥

So audhootu aisee mati paavai ||

He alone is a hermit, who attains such understanding.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अहिनिसि सुंनि समाधि समावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ahinisi sunni samaadhi samaavai ||1|| rahaau ||

Day and night, he remains absorbed in deepest Samaadhi. ||1|| Pause ||


ਭਿਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਚਲੈ ॥

भिखिआ भाइ भगति भै चलै ॥

Bhikhiaa bhaai bhagati bhai chalai ||

He begs for loving devotion to the Lord, and lives in the Fear of God.

ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਅਮੁਲੈ ॥

होवै सु त्रिपति संतोखि अमुलै ॥

Hovai su tripati santtokhi amulai ||

He is satisfied, with the priceless gift of contentment.

ਧਿਆਨ ਰੂਪਿ ਹੋਇ ਆਸਣੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

धिआन रूपि होइ आसणु पावै ॥

Dhiaan roopi hoi aasa(nn)u paavai ||

Becoming the embodiment of meditation, he attains the true Yogic posture.

ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

सचि नामि ताड़ी चितु लावै ॥२॥

Sachi naami taa(rr)ee chitu laavai ||2||

He focuses his consciousness in the deep trance of the True Name. ||2||


ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

नानकु बोलै अम्रित बाणी ॥

Listen, O Machhindra: this is the insignia of the true hermit.

ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ਵਲਾਏ ॥

आसा माहि निरासु वलाए ॥

Aasaa maahi niraasu valaae ||

One who, in the midst of hope, remains untouched by hope,

ਨਿਹਚਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

निहचउ नानक करते पाए ॥३॥

Nihachau naanak karate paae ||3||

Shall truly find the Creator Lord. ||3||


ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਗਮੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥

प्रणवति नानकु अगमु सुणाए ॥

Pr(nn)avati naanaku agamu su(nn)aae ||

Prays Nanak, I share the mysterious secrets of God.

ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

गुर चेले की संधि मिलाए ॥

Gur chele kee sanddhi milaae ||

The Guru and His disciple are joined together!

ਦੀਖਿਆ ਦਾਰੂ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥

दीखिआ दारू भोजनु खाइ ॥

Deekhiaa daaroo bhojanu khaai ||

One who eats this food, this medicine of the Teachings,

ਛਿਅ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੫॥

छिअ दरसन की सोझी पाइ ॥४॥५॥

Chhia darasan kee sojhee paai ||4||5||

Has the wisdom of the six Shaastras. ||4||5||

ਹਮ ਡੋਲਤ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਪ ਭਰੀ ਹੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਲਗੈ ਮਤੁ ਜਾਈ ॥

हम डोलत बेड़ी पाप भरी है पवणु लगै मतु जाई ॥

Ham dolat be(rr)ee paap bharee hai pava(nn)u lagai matu jaaee ||

My boat is wobbly and unsteady; it is filled with sins. The wind is rising - what if it tips over?

ਸਨਮੁਖ ਸਿਧ ਭੇਟਣ ਕਉ ਆਏ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਦੇਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੧॥

सनमुख सिध भेटण कउ आए निहचउ देहि वडिआई ॥१॥

Sanamukh sidh bheta(nn) kau aae nihachau dehi vadiaaee ||1||

As sunmukh, I have turned to the Guru; O my Perfect Master; please be sure to bless me with Your glorious greatness. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਤਾਰਿ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

गुर तारि तारणहारिआ ॥

Gur taari taara(nn)ahaariaa ||

O Guru, my Saving Grace, please carry me across the world-ocean.

ਦੇਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਅਵਿਨਾਸੀ ਹਉ ਤੁਝ ਕਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

देहि भगति पूरन अविनासी हउ तुझ कउ बलिहारिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dehi bhagati pooran avinaasee hau tujh kau balihaariaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Bless me with devotion to the perfect, imperishable Lord God; I am a sacrifice to You. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਜੋਗੀ ਅਰੁ ਜੰਗਮ ਏਕੁ ਸਿਧੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

सिध साधिक जोगी अरु जंगम एकु सिधु जिनी धिआइआ ॥

Sidh saadhik jogee aru janggam eku sidhu jinee dhiaaiaa ||

He alone is a Siddha, a seeker, a Yogi, a wandering pilgrim, who meditates on the One Perfect Lord.

ਪਰਸਤ ਪੈਰ ਸਿਝਤ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਖਰੁ ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥

परसत पैर सिझत ते सुआमी अखरु जिन कउ आइआ ॥२॥

Parasat pair sijhat te suaamee akharu jin kau aaiaa ||2||

Touching the feet of the Lord Master, they are emancipated; they come to receive the Word of the Teachings. ||2||


ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ॥

जप तप संजम करम न जाना नामु जपी प्रभ तेरा ॥

Jap tap sanjjam karam na jaanaa naamu japee prbh teraa ||

I know nothing of charity, meditation, self-discipline or religious rituals; I only chant Your Name, God.

ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥੩॥੬॥

गुरु परमेसरु नानक भेटिओ साचै सबदि निबेरा ॥३॥६॥

Guru paramesaru naanak bhetio saachai sabadi niberaa ||3||6||

Nanak has met the Guru, the Transcendent Lord God; through the True Word of His Shabad, he is set free. ||3||6||

ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਏਤੁ ॥

सुरती सुरति रलाईऐ एतु ॥

Suratee surati ralaaeeai etu ||

Focus your consciousness in deep absorption on the Lord.

ਤਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਲੰਘਹਿ ਜੇਤੁ ॥

तनु करि तुलहा लंघहि जेतु ॥

Tanu kari tulahaa langghahi jetu ||

Make your body a raft, to cross over.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਾਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੂ ਰਖੁ ॥

अंतरि भाहि तिसै तू रखु ॥

Anttari bhaahi tisai too rakhu ||

Deep within is the fire of desire; keep it in check.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਲੈ ਅਥਕੁ ॥੧॥

अहिनिसि दीवा बलै अथकु ॥१॥

Ahinisi deevaa balai athaku ||1||

Day and night, that lamp shall burn unceasingly. ||1||


ਐਸਾ ਦੀਵਾ ਨੀਰਿ ਤਰਾਇ ॥

ऐसा दीवा नीरि तराइ ॥

Aisaa deevaa neeri taraai ||

Float such a lamp upon the water;

ਜਿਤੁ ਦੀਵੈ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जितु दीवै सभ सोझी पाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jitu deevai sabh sojhee paai ||1|| rahaau ||

This lamp will bring total understanding. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਛੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥

हछी मिटी सोझी होइ ॥

Hachhee mitee sojhee hoi ||

This understanding is good clay;

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਮਾਨੈ ਸੋਇ ॥

ता का कीआ मानै सोइ ॥

Taa kaa keeaa maanai soi ||

A lamp made of such clay is acceptable to the Lord.

ਕਰਣੀ ਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਚਕਹੁ ਢਾਲਿ ॥

करणी ते करि चकहु ढालि ॥

Kara(nn)ee te kari chakahu dhaali ||

So shape this lamp on the wheel of good actions.

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥

ऐथै ओथै निबही नालि ॥२॥

Aithai othai nibahee naali ||2||

In this world and in the next, this lamp shall be with you. ||2||


ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

आपे नदरि करे जा सोइ ॥

Aape nadari kare jaa soi ||

When He Himself grants His Grace,

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥

गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोइ ॥

Guramukhi viralaa boojhai koi ||

Then, as Gurmukh, one may understand Him.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਵਾ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

तितु घटि दीवा निहचलु होइ ॥

Titu ghati deevaa nihachalu hoi ||

Within the heart, this lamp is permanently lit.

ਪਾਣੀ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

पाणी मरै न बुझाइआ जाइ ॥

Paa(nn)ee marai na bujhaaiaa jaai ||

It is not extinguished by water or wind.

ਐਸਾ ਦੀਵਾ ਨੀਰਿ ਤਰਾਇ ॥੩॥

ऐसा दीवा नीरि तराइ ॥३॥

Aisaa deevaa neeri taraai ||3||

Such a lamp will carry you across the water. ||3||


ਡੋਲੈ ਵਾਉ ਨ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

डोलै वाउ न वडा होइ ॥

Dolai vaau na vadaa hoi ||

Wind does not shake it, or put it out.

ਜਾਪੈ ਜਿਉ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਣਿ ਲੋਇ ॥

जापै जिउ सिंघासणि लोइ ॥

Jaapai jiu singghaasa(nn)i loi ||

Its light reveals the Divine Throne.

ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਸੂਦੁ ਕਿ ਵੈਸੁ ॥

खत्री ब्राहमणु सूदु कि वैसु ॥

Khatree braahama(nn)u soodu ki vaisu ||

The Kshatriyas, Brahmins, Soodras and Vaisyas

ਨਿਰਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਗਣੀ ਸਹੰਸ ॥

निरति न पाईआ गणी सहंस ॥

Nirati na paaeeaa ga(nn)ee sahanss ||

Cannot find its value, even by thousands of calculations.

ਐਸਾ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲੇ ਕੋਇ ॥

ऐसा दीवा बाले कोइ ॥

Aisaa deevaa baale koi ||

If any of them lights such a lamp,

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਪਾਰੰਗਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੭॥

नानक सो पारंगति होइ ॥४॥७॥

Naanak so paaranggati hoi ||4||7||

O Nanak, he is emancipated. ||4||7||

Tudhano niva(nn)u manna(nn)u teraa naau ||

To place one's faith in Your Name,Lord,is true worship.

ਸਾਚੁ ਭੇਟ ਬੈਸਣ ਕਉ ਥਾਉ ॥

साचु भेट बैसण कउ थाउ ॥

Saachu bhet baisa(nn) kau thaau ||

With an offering of Truth, one obtains a place to sit.

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

सतु संतोखु होवै अरदासि ॥

Satu santtokhu hovai aradaasi ||

If a prayer is offered with truth and contentment,

ਤਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਦਿ ਬਹਾਲੇ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥

ता सुणि सदि बहाले पासि ॥१॥

Taa su(nn)i sadi bahaale paasi ||1||

The Lord will hear it, and call him in to sit by Him. ||1||


ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

नानक बिरथा कोइ न होइ ॥

Naanak birathaa koi na hoi ||

O Nanak, no one returns empty-handed;

ਐਸੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ऐसी दरगह साचा सोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aisee daragah saachaa soi ||1|| rahaau ||

Such is the Court of the True Lord. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਪੋਤਾ ਕਰਮੁ ਪਸਾਉ ॥

प्रापति पोता करमु पसाउ ॥

Praapati potaa karamu pasaau ||

The treasure I seek is the gift of Your Grace.

ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮੰਗਤ ਜਨ ਚਾਉ ॥

तू देवहि मंगत जन चाउ ॥

Too devahi manggat jan chaau ||

Please bless this humble beggar - this is what I seek.

ਭਾਡੈ ਭਾਉ ਪਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਆਇ ॥

भाडै भाउ पवै तितु आइ ॥

Bhaadai bhaau pavai titu aai ||

Please, pour Your Love into the cup of my heart.

ਧੁਰਿ ਤੈ ਛੋਡੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

धुरि तै छोडी कीमति पाइ ॥२॥

Dhuri tai chhodee keemati paai ||2||

This is Your pre-determined value. ||2||


ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥

जिनि किछु कीआ सो किछु करै ॥

Jini kichhu keeaa so kichhu karai ||

The One who created everything, does everything.

ਅਪਨੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਧਰੈ ॥

अपनी कीमति आपे धरै ॥

Apanee keemati aape dharai ||

He Himself appraises His own value.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥

गुरमुखि परगटु होआ हरि राइ ॥

Guramukhi paragatu hoaa hari raai ||

The Sovereign Lord King becomes manifest to the Gurmukh.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਆਵੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

ना को आवै ना को जाइ ॥३॥

Naa ko aavai naa ko jaai ||3||

He does not come, and He does not go. ||3||


ਲੋਕੁ ਧਿਕਾਰੁ ਕਹੈ ਮੰਗਤ ਜਨ ਮਾਗਤ ਮਾਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

लोकु धिकारु कहै मंगत जन मागत मानु न पाइआ ॥

Loku dhikaaru kahai manggat jan maagat maanu na paaiaa ||

People curse at the beggar; by begging, he does not receive honor.

ਸਹ ਕੀਆ ਗਲਾ ਦਰ ਕੀਆ ਬਾਤਾ ਤੈ ਤਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੮॥

सह कीआ गला दर कीआ बाता तै ता कहणु कहाइआ ॥४॥८॥

Sah keeaa galaa dar keeaa baataa tai taa kaha(nn)u kahaaiaa ||4||8||

O Lord, You inspire me to speak Your Words, and tell the Story of Your Court. ||4||8||

ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਬੂੰਦ ਬੂੰਦ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਕਵਣੁ ਬੁਝੈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

सागर महि बूंद बूंद महि सागरु कवणु बुझै बिधि जाणै ॥

Saagar mahi boondd boondd mahi saagaru kava(nn)u bujhai bidhi jaa(nn)ai ||

The drop is in the ocean, and the ocean is in the drop. Who understands, and knows this?

ਉਤਭੁਜ ਚਲਤ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਿ ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੇ ਤਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੧॥

उतभुज चलत आपि करि चीनै आपे ततु पछाणै ॥१॥

Utabhuj chalat aapi kari cheenai aape tatu pachhaa(nn)ai ||1||

He Himself creates the wondrous play of the world. He Himself contemplates it, and understands its true essence. ||1||


ਐਸਾ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

ऐसा गिआनु बीचारै कोई ॥

Aisaa giaanu beechaarai koee ||

How rare are those who contemplate this spiritual wisdom.

ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तिस ते मुकति परम गति होई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tis te mukati param gati hoee ||1|| rahaau ||

Through this, the supreme state of liberation is attained. ||1|| Pause ||


ਦਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੈਣਿ ਰੈਣਿ ਮਹਿ ਦਿਨੀਅਰੁ ਉਸਨ ਸੀਤ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

दिन महि रैणि रैणि महि दिनीअरु उसन सीत बिधि सोई ॥

Din mahi rai(nn)i rai(nn)i mahi dineearu usan seet bidhi soee ||

The night is in the day, and the day is in the night. The same is true of hot and cold.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਮਝ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥

ता की गति मिति अवरु न जाणै गुर बिनु समझ न होई ॥२॥

Taa kee gati miti avaru na jaa(nn)ai gur binu samajh na hoee ||2||

No one else knows His state and extent; without the Guru, this is not understood. ||2||


ਪੁਰਖ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥

पुरख महि नारि नारि महि पुरखा बूझहु ब्रहम गिआनी ॥

Purakh mahi naari naari mahi purakhaa boojhahu brham giaanee ||

The female is in the male, and the male is in the female. Understand this, O God-realized being!

ਧੁਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਨੀ ॥੩॥

धुनि महि धिआनु धिआन महि जानिआ गुरमुखि अकथ कहानी ॥३॥

Dhuni mahi dhiaanu dhiaan mahi jaaniaa guramukhi akath kahaanee ||3||

The meditation is in the music, and knowledge is in meditation. Become Gurmukh, and speak the Unspoken Speech. ||3||


ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਪੰਚ ਮਿਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਈ ॥

मन महि जोति जोति महि मनूआ पंच मिले गुर भाई ॥

Man mahi joti joti mahi manooaa pancch mile gur bhaaee ||

The Light is in the mind, and the mind is in the Light. The Guru brings the five senses together, like brothers.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਜਿਨ ਏਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੪॥੯॥

नानक तिन कै सद बलिहारी जिन एक सबदि लिव लाई ॥४॥९॥

Naanak tin kai sad balihaaree jin ek sabadi liv laaee ||4||9||

Nanak is forever a sacrifice to those who enshrine love for the One Word of the Shabad. ||4||9||

ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

जा हरि प्रभि किरपा धारी ॥

Jaa hari prbhi kirapaa dhaaree ||

When the Lord God showered His Mercy,

ਤਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

ता हउमै विचहु मारी ॥

Taa haumai vichahu maaree ||

Egotism was eradicated from within me.

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕਿ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

सो सेवकि राम पिआरी ॥

So sevaki raam piaaree ||

That humble servant is very dear to the Lord,

ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

जो गुर सबदी बीचारी ॥१॥

Jo gur sabadee beechaaree ||1||

who contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||


ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

सो हरि जनु हरि प्रभ भावै ॥

So hari janu hari prbh bhaavai ||

That humble servant of the Lord is pleasing to his Lord God;

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਲਾਜ ਛੋਡਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अहिनिसि भगति करे दिनु राती लाज छोडि हरि के गुण गावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ahinisi bhagati kare dinu raatee laaj chhodi hari ke gu(nn) gaavai ||1|| rahaau ||

Day and night, he performs devotional worship, day and night. Disregarding his own honor, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1|| Pause ||


ਧੁਨਿ ਵਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਘੋਰਾ ॥

धुनि वाजे अनहद घोरा ॥

Dhuni vaaje anahad ghoraa ||

The unstruck melody of the sound current resonates and resounds;

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮੋਰਾ ॥

मनु मानिआ हरि रसि मोरा ॥

Manu maaniaa hari rasi moraa ||

My mind is appeased by the subtle essence of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

गुर पूरै सचु समाइआ ॥

Gur poorai sachu samaaiaa ||

Through the Perfect Guru, I am absorbed in Truth.

ਗੁਰੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

गुरु आदि पुरखु हरि पाइआ ॥२॥

Guru aadi purakhu hari paaiaa ||2||

Through the Guru, I have found the Lord, the Primal Being. ||2||


ਸਭਿ ਨਾਦ ਬੇਦ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥

सभि नाद बेद गुरबाणी ॥

Sabhi naad bed gurabaa(nn)ee ||

Gurbani is the sound current of the Naad, the Vedas, everything.

ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਿਗਪਾਣੀ ॥

मनु राता सारिगपाणी ॥

Manu raataa saarigapaa(nn)ee ||

My mind is attuned to the Lord of the Universe.

ਤਹ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਤਪ ਸਾਰੇ ॥

तह तीरथ वरत तप सारे ॥

Tah teerath varat tap saare ||

He is my sacred shrine of pilgrimage, fasting and austere self-discipline.

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

गुर मिलिआ हरि निसतारे ॥३॥

Gur miliaa hari nisataare ||3||

The Lord saves, and carries across, those who meet with the Guru. ||3||


ਜਹ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥

जह आपु गइआ भउ भागा ॥

Jah aapu gaiaa bhau bhaagaa ||

One whose self-conceit is gone, sees his fears run away.

ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

गुर चरणी सेवकु लागा ॥

Gur chara(nn)ee sevaku laagaa ||

That servant grasps the Guru's feet.

ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

गुरि सतिगुरि भरमु चुकाइआ ॥

Guri satiguri bharamu chukaaiaa ||

The Guru, the True Guru, has expelled my doubts.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੦॥

कहु नानक सबदि मिलाइआ ॥४॥१०॥

Kahu naanak sabadi milaaiaa ||4||10||

Says Nanak, I have merged into the Word of the Shabad. ||4||10||

Raamakalee mahalaa 1 ||

Raamkalee, First Mehl:

ਛਾਦਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਮਾਗਤੁ ਭਾਗੈ ॥

छादनु भोजनु मागतु भागै ॥

Chhaadanu bhojanu maagatu bhaagai ||

He runs around, begging for clothes and food.

ਖੁਧਿਆ ਦੁਸਟ ਜਲੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥

खुधिआ दुसट जलै दुखु आगै ॥

Khudhiaa dusat jalai dukhu aagai ||

He burns with hunger and corruption, and will suffer in the world hereafter.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਨੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥

गुरमति नही लीनी दुरमति पति खोई ॥

Guramati nahee leenee duramati pati khoee ||

He does not follow the Guru's Teachings; through his evil-mindedness, he loses his honor.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥

गुरमति भगति पावै जनु कोई ॥१॥

Guramati bhagati paavai janu koee ||1||

Only through the Guru's Teachings will such a person become devoted. ||1||


ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੈ ॥

जोगी जुगति सहज घरि वासै ॥

Jogee jugati sahaj ghari vaasai ||

The way of the Yogi is to dwell in the celestial home of bliss.

ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एक द्रिसटि एको करि देखिआ भीखिआ भाइ सबदि त्रिपतासै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ek drisati eko kari dekhiaa bheekhiaa bhaai sabadi tripataasai ||1|| rahaau ||

He looks impartially, equally upon all. He receives the charity of the Lord's Love, and the Word of the Shabad, and so he is satisfied. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪੰਚ ਬੈਲ ਗਡੀਆ ਦੇਹ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

पंच बैल गडीआ देह धारी ॥

Pancch bail gadeeaa deh dhaaree ||

The five bulls, the senses, pull the wagon of the body around.

ਰਾਮ ਕਲਾ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ॥

राम कला निबहै पति सारी ॥

Raam kalaa nibahai pati saaree ||

By the Lord's power, one's honor is preserved.

ਧਰ ਤੂਟੀ ਗਾਡੋ ਸਿਰ ਭਾਰਿ ॥

धर तूटी गाडो सिर भारि ॥

Dhar tootee gaado sir bhaari ||

But when the axle breaks, the wagon falls and crashes.

ਲਕਰੀ ਬਿਖਰਿ ਜਰੀ ਮੰਝ ਭਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

लकरी बिखरि जरी मंझ भारि ॥२॥

Lakaree bikhari jaree manjjh bhaari ||2||

It falls apart, like a pile of logs. ||2||


ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ॥

गुर का सबदु वीचारि जोगी ॥

Gur kaa sabadu veechaari jogee ||

Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad, Yogi.

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਓਗੀ ॥

दुखु सुखु सम करणा सोग बिओगी ॥

Dukhu sukhu sam kara(nn)aa sog biogee ||

Look upon pain and pleasure as one and the same, sorrow and separation.

ਭੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

भुगति नामु गुर सबदि बीचारी ॥

Bhugati naamu gur sabadi beechaaree ||

Let your food be contemplative meditation upon the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕੰਧੁ ਜਪੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

असथिरु कंधु जपै निरंकारी ॥३॥

Asathiru kanddhu japai nirankkaaree ||3||

Your wall shall be permanent, by meditating on the Formless Lord. ||3||


ਸਹਜ ਜਗੋਟਾ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਛੂਟਾ ॥

सहज जगोटा बंधन ते छूटा ॥

Sahaj jagotaa banddhan te chhootaa ||

Wear the loin-cloth of poise, and be free of entanglements.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਲੂਟਾ ॥

कामु क्रोधु गुर सबदी लूटा ॥

Kaamu krodhu gur sabadee lootaa ||

The Guru's Word shall release you from sexual desire and anger.

ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾ ॥

मन महि मुंद्रा हरि गुर सरणा ॥

Man mahi munddraa hari gur sara(nn)aa ||

In your mind, let your ear-rings be the Sanctuary of the Guru, the Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

नानक राम भगति जन तरणा ॥४॥११॥

Naanak raam bhagati jan tara(nn)aa ||4||11||

O Nanak, worshipping the Lord in deep devotion, the humble are carried across. ||4||11||


ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

Raamkalee, Third Mehl, First House:

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

सतजुगि सचु कहै सभु कोई ॥

Satajugi sachu kahai sabhu koee ||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, everyone spoke the Truth.

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

घरि घरि भगति गुरमुखि होई ॥

Ghari ghari bhagati guramukhi hoee ||

In each and every home, devotional worship was performed by the people, according to the Guru's Teachings.

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੈਰ ਹੈ ਚਾਰਿ ॥

सतजुगि धरमु पैर है चारि ॥

Satajugi dharamu pair hai chaari ||

In that Golden Age, Dharma had four feet.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि बूझै को बीचारि ॥१॥

Guramukhi boojhai ko beechaari ||1||

How rare are those people who, as Gurmukh, contemplate this and understand. ||1||


ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਈ ॥

जुग चारे नामि वडिआई होई ॥

Jug chaare naami vadiaaee hoee ||

In all four ages, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is glory and greatness.

ਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जि नामि लागै सो मुकति होवै गुर बिनु नामु न पावै कोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ji naami laagai so mukati hovai gur binu naamu na paavai koee ||1|| rahaau ||

One who holds tight to the Naam is liberated; without the Guru, no one obtains the Naam. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਕੀਨੀ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

त्रेतै इक कल कीनी दूरि ॥

Tretai ik kal keenee doori ||

In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yuga, one leg was removed.

ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

पाखंडु वरतिआ हरि जाणनि दूरि ॥

Paakhanddu varatiaa hari jaa(nn)ani doori ||

Hypocrisy became prevalent, and people thought that the Lord was far away.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

गुरमुखि बूझै सोझी होई ॥

Guramukhi boojhai sojhee hoee ||

The Gurmukhs still understood and realized;

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥

अंतरि नामु वसै सुखु होई ॥२॥

Anttari naamu vasai sukhu hoee ||2||

The Naam abided deep within them, and they were at peace. ||2||


ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

दुआपुरि दूजै दुबिधा होइ ॥

Duaapuri doojai dubidhaa hoi ||

In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, duality and double-mindedness arose.

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਦੋਇ ॥

भरमि भुलाने जाणहि दोइ ॥

Bharami bhulaane jaa(nn)ahi doi ||

Deluded by doubt, they knew duality.

ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਧਰਮਿ ਦੁਇ ਪੈਰ ਰਖਾਏ ॥

दुआपुरि धरमि दुइ पैर रखाए ॥

Duaapuri dharami dui pair rakhaae ||

In this Brass Age, Dharma was left with only two feet.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੩॥

गुरमुखि होवै त नामु द्रिड़ाए ॥३॥

Guramukhi hovai ta naamu dri(rr)aae ||3||

Those who became Gurmukh implanted the Naam deep within. ||3||


ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਧਰਮ ਕਲਾ ਇਕ ਰਹਾਏ ॥

कलजुगि धरम कला इक रहाए ॥

Kalajugi dharam kalaa ik rahaae ||

In the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, Dharma was left with only one power.

ਇਕ ਪੈਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਏ ॥

इक पैरि चलै माइआ मोहु वधाए ॥

Ik pairi chalai maaiaa mohu vadhaae ||

It walks on just one foot; love and emotional attachment to Maya have increased.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

माइआ मोहु अति गुबारु ॥

Maaiaa mohu ati gubaaru ||

Love and emotional attachment to Maya bring total darkness.

ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥

सतगुरु भेटै नामि उधारु ॥४॥

Sataguru bhetai naami udhaaru ||4||

If someone meets the True Guru, he is saved, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||


ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥

सभ जुग महि साचा एको सोई ॥

Sabh jug mahi saachaa eko soee ||

Throughout the ages, there is only the One True Lord.

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥

सभ महि सचु दूजा नही कोई ॥

Sabh mahi sachu doojaa nahee koee ||

Among all, is the True Lord; there is no other at all.

ਸਾਚੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

साची कीरति सचु सुखु होई ॥

Saachee keerati sachu sukhu hoee ||

Praising the True Lord, true peace is attained.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫॥

गुरमुखि नामु वखाणै कोई ॥५॥

Guramukhi naamu vakhaa(nn)ai koee ||5||

How rare are those, who as Gurmukh, chant the Naam. ||5||


ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

सभ जुग महि नामु ऊतमु होई ॥

Sabh jug mahi naamu utamu hoee ||

Throughout all the ages, the Naam is the ultimate, the most sublime.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

गुरमुखि विरला बूझै कोई ॥

Guramukhi viralaa boojhai koee ||

How rare are those, who as Gurmukh, understand this.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

हरि नामु धिआए भगतु जनु सोई ॥

Hari naamu dhiaae bhagatu janu soee ||

One who meditates on the Lord's Name is a humble devotee.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥੧॥

नानक जुगि जुगि नामि वडिआई होई ॥६॥१॥

Naanak jugi jugi naami vadiaaee hoee ||6||1||

O Nanak, in each and every age, the Naam is glory and greatness. ||6||1||

ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

जे वड भाग होवहि वडभागी ता हरि हरि नामु धिआवै ॥

Je vad bhaag hovahi vadabhaagee taa hari hari naamu dhiaavai ||

If someone is very fortunate, and is blessed with great high destiny, then he meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

नामु जपत नामे सुखु पावै हरि नामे नामि समावै ॥१॥

Naamu japat naame sukhu paavai hari naame naami samaavai ||1||

Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he finds peace, and merges in the Naam. ||1||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥

गुरमुखि भगति करहु सद प्राणी ॥

Guramukhi bhagati karahu sad praa(nn)ee ||

O mortal, as Gurmukh, worship the Lord in devotion forever.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हिरदै प्रगासु होवै लिव लागै गुरमति हरि हरि नामि समाणी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hiradai prgaasu hovai liv laagai guramati hari hari naami samaa(nn)ee ||1|| rahaau ||

Your heart shall be illumined; through the Guru's Teachings,lovingly attune yourself to the Lord. You shall merge in the Name of the Lord,Har, Har. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹੀਰਾ ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਰਪੂਰੁ ਕੀਆ ॥

हीरा रतन जवेहर माणक बहु सागर भरपूरु कीआ ॥

Heeraa ratan javehar maa(nn)ak bahu saagar bharapooru keeaa ||

The Great Giver is filled with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and pearls;

ਜਿਸੁ ਵਡ ਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਢਿ ਕਢਿ ਲੀਆ ॥੨॥

जिसु वड भागु होवै वड मसतकि तिनि गुरमति कढि कढि लीआ ॥२॥

Jisu vad bhaagu hovai vad masataki tini guramati kadhi kadhi leeaa ||2||

One who has good fortune and great destiny inscribed upon his forehead, digs them out, by following the Guru's Teachings. ||2||


ਰਤਨੁ ਜਵੇਹਰੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਤਲੀ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ॥

रतनु जवेहरु लालु हरि नामा गुरि काढि तली दिखलाइआ ॥

Ratanu javeharu laalu hari naamaa guri kaadhi talee dikhalaaiaa ||

The Lord's Name is the jewel, the emerald, the ruby; digging it out, the Guru has placed it in your palm.

ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਓਲੈ ਲਾਖੁ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

भागहीण मनमुखि नही लीआ त्रिण ओलै लाखु छपाइआ ॥३॥

Bhaagahee(nn) manamukhi nahee leeaa tri(nn) olai laakhu chhapaaiaa ||3||

The unfortunate, self-willed manmukh does not obtain it; this priceless jewel remains hidden behind a curtain of straw. ||3||


ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥

मसतकि भागु होवै धुरि लिखिआ ता सतगुरु सेवा लाए ॥

Masataki bhaagu hovai dhuri likhiaa taa sataguru sevaa laae ||

If such pre-ordained destiny is written upon one's forehead, then the True Guru enjoins him to serve Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਪਾਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੧॥

नानक रतन जवेहर पावै धनु धनु गुरमति हरि पाए ॥४॥१॥

Naanak ratan javehar paavai dhanu dhanu guramati hari paae ||4||1||

O Nanak, then he obtains the jewel, the gem; blessed, blessed is that one who follows the Guru's Teachings, and finds the Lord. ||4||1||

ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥

राम जना मिलि भइआ अनंदा हरि नीकी कथा सुनाइ ॥

Raam janaa mili bhaiaa ananddaa hari neekee kathaa sunaai ||

Meeting with the humble servants of the Lord, I am in ecstasy; they preach the sublime sermon of the Lord.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਈ ਸਭ ਨੀਕਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

दुरमति मैलु गई सभ नीकलि सतसंगति मिलि बुधि पाइ ॥१॥

Duramati mailu gaee sabh neekali satasanggati mili budhi paai ||1||

The filth of evil-mindedness is totally washed away; joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, one is blessed with understanding. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਜਨ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਬੋਲਾਇ ॥

राम जन गुरमति रामु बोलाइ ॥

Raam jan guramati raamu bolaai ||

O humble servant of the Lord, follow the Guru's Teachings, and chant the Name of the Lord.

ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਸੋਹਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जो जो सुणै कहै सो मुकता राम जपत सोहाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jo jo su(nn)ai kahai so mukataa raam japat sohaai ||1|| rahaau ||

Whoever hears and speaks it is liberated; chanting the Lord's Name, one is embellished with beauty. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਭੇਟਾਇ ॥

जे वड भाग होवहि मुखि मसतकि हरि राम जना भेटाइ ॥

Je vad bhaag hovahi mukhi masataki hari raam janaa bhetaai ||

If someone has supremely high destiny written on his forehead, the Lord leads him to meet the humble servants of the Lord.

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਦੇਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਭੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

दरसनु संत देहु करि किरपा सभु दालदु दुखु लहि जाइ ॥२॥

Darasanu santt dehu kari kirapaa sabhu daaladu dukhu lahi jaai ||2||

Be merciful, and grant me the Blessed Vision of the Saints' Darshan, which shall rid me of all poverty and pain. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਰਾਮ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਨ ਸੁਖਾਇ ॥

हरि के लोग राम जन नीके भागहीण न सुखाइ ॥

Hari ke log raam jan neeke bhaagahee(nn) na sukhaai ||

The Lord's people are good and sublime; the unfortunate ones do not like them at all.

ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਊਚੇ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੰਸੁ ਲਗਾਇ ॥੩॥

जिउ जिउ राम कहहि जन ऊचे नर निंदक डंसु लगाइ ॥३॥

Jiu jiu raam kahahi jan uche nar ninddak danssu lagaai ||3||

The more the Lord's exalted servants speak of Him, the more the slanderers attack and sting them. ||3||


ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਜਿਨ ਜਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਖਾ ਸਖਾਇ ॥

ध्रिगु ध्रिगु नर निंदक जिन जन नही भाए हरि के सखा सखाइ ॥

Dhrigu dhrigu nar ninddak jin jan nahee bhaae hari ke sakhaa sakhaai ||

Cursed, cursed are the slanderers who do not like the humble, the friends and companions of the Lord.

ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚੋਰ ਵੇਮੁਖ ਮੁਖ ਕਾਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਨ ਭਾਇ ॥੪॥

से हरि के चोर वेमुख मुख काले जिन गुर की पैज न भाइ ॥४॥

Se hari ke chor vemukh mukh kaale jin gur kee paij na bhaai ||4||

Those who do not like the honor and glory of the Guru are faithless, black-faced thieves, who have turned their backs on the Lord. ||4||


ਦਇਆ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥

दइआ दइआ करि राखहु हरि जीउ हम दीन तेरी सरणाइ ॥

Daiaa daiaa kari raakhahu hari jeeu ham deen teree sara(nn)aai ||

Have mercy, have mercy, please save me, Dear Lord. I am meek and humble - I seek Your protection.

ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੁਮ ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੫॥੨॥

हम बारिक तुम पिता प्रभ मेरे जन नानक बखसि मिलाइ ॥५॥२॥

Ham baarik tum pitaa prbh mere jan naanak bakhasi milaai ||5||2||

I am Your child, and You are my father, God. Please forgive servant Nanak and merge him with Yourself. ||5||2||

Raamkalee, Fourth Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਖਾ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਤਿਨ ਊਪਰਿ ਹਾਥੁ ਵਤਾਵੈ ॥

हरि के सखा साध जन नीके तिन ऊपरि हाथु वतावै ॥

Hari ke sakhaa saadh jan neeke tin upari haathu vataavai ||

The friends of the Lord, the humble, Holy Saints are sublime; the Lord spreads out His protecting hands above them.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧ ਸੇਈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਏ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि साध सेई प्रभ भाए करि किरपा आपि मिलावै ॥१॥

Guramukhi saadh seee prbh bhaae kari kirapaa aapi milaavai ||1||

The Gurmukhs are the Holy Saints, pleasing to God; in His mercy, He blends them with Himself. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

राम मो कउ हरि जन मेलि मनि भावै ॥

Raam mo kau hari jan meli mani bhaavai ||

O Lord, my mind longs to meet with the humble servants of the Lord.

ਅਮਿਉ ਅਮਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਹੈ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अमिउ अमिउ हरि रसु है मीठा मिलि संत जना मुखि पावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Amiu amiu hari rasu hai meethaa mili santt janaa mukhi paavai ||1|| rahaau ||

The sweet, subtle essence of the Lord is immortalizing ambrosia. Meeting the Saints, I drink it in. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਰਾਮ ਜਨ ਊਤਮ ਮਿਲਿ ਊਤਮ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

हरि के लोग राम जन ऊतम मिलि ऊतम पदवी पावै ॥

Hari ke log raam jan utam mili utam padavee paavai ||

The Lord's people are the most lofty and exalted. Meeting with them, the most exalted status is obtained.

ਹਮ ਹੋਵਤ ਚੇਰੀ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਖੁਸੀ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

हम होवत चेरी दास दासन की मेरा ठाकुरु खुसी करावै ॥२॥

Ham hovat cheree daas daasan kee meraa thaakuru khusee karaavai ||2||

I am the slave of the slave of the Lord's slaves; my Lord and Master is pleased with me. ||2||


ਸੇਵਕ ਜਨ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਰਿਦ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥

सेवक जन सेवहि से वडभागी रिद मनि तनि प्रीति लगावै ॥

Sevak jan sevahi se vadabhaagee rid mani tani preeti lagaavai ||

The humble servant serves; one who enshrines love for the Lord in his heart, mind and body is very fortunate.

ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਬਾਤਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਕੂੜੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

बिनु प्रीती करहि बहु बाता कूड़ु बोलि कूड़ो फलु पावै ॥३॥

Binu preetee karahi bahu baataa koo(rr)u boli koo(rr)o phalu paavai ||3||

One who talks too much without love, speaks falsely, and obtains only false rewards. ||3||


ਮੋ ਕਉ ਧਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਦਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਪਗੀ ਲੇ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

मो कउ धारि क्रिपा जगजीवन दाते हरि संत पगी ले पावै ॥

Mo kau dhaari kripaa jagajeevan daate hari santt pagee le paavai ||

Take pity on me, O Lord of the World, O Great Giver; let me fall at the feet of the Saints.

ਹਉ ਕਾਟਉ ਕਾਟਿ ਬਾਢਿ ਸਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਉ ਜਿਤੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤੁ ਚੜਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੪॥੩॥

हउ काटउ काटि बाढि सिरु राखउ जितु नानक संतु चड़ि आवै ॥४॥३॥

Hau kaatau kaati baadhi siru raakhau jitu naanak santtu cha(rr)i aavai ||4||3||

I would cut off my head, and cut it into pieces, O Nanak, and set it down for the Saints to walk upon. ||4||3||

Raamkalee, Fourth Mehl:

ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਵਡ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਮਿਲਦਿਆ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

जे वड भाग होवहि वड मेरे जन मिलदिआ ढिल न लाईऐ ॥

Je vad bhaag hovahi vad mere jan miladiaa dhil na laaeeai ||

If I am blessed with supreme high destiny, I will meet the humble servants of the Lord, without delay.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੁੰਟ ਸਰ ਨੀਕੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਨਾਵਾਈਐ ॥੧॥

हरि जन अम्रित कुंट सर नीके वडभागी तितु नावाईऐ ॥१॥

Hari jan ammmrit kuntt sar neeke vadabhaagee titu naavaaeeai ||1||

The Lord's humble servants are pools of ambrosial nectar; by great good fortune, one bathes in them. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

राम मो कउ हरि जन कारै लाईऐ ॥

Raam mo kau hari jan kaarai laaeeai ||

O Lord, let me work for the humble servants of the Lord.

ਹਉ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਖਾ ਪੀਸਉ ਸੰਤ ਆਗੈ ਪਗ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਧੂਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ पाणी पखा पीसउ संत आगै पग मलि मलि धूरि मुखि लाईऐ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau paa(nn)ee pakhaa peesau santt aagai pag mali mali dhoori mukhi laaeeai ||1|| rahaau ||

I carry water, wave the fan and grind the corn for them; I massage and wash their feet. I apply the dust of their feet to my forehead. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇ ਵਡ ਊਚੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ॥

हरि जन वडे वडे वड ऊचे जो सतगुर मेलि मिलाईऐ ॥

Hari jan vade vade vad uche jo satagur meli milaaeeai ||

The Lord's humble servants are great, very great, the greatest and most exalted; they lead us to meet the True Guru.

ਸਤਗੁਰ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥੨॥

सतगुर जेवडु अवरु न कोई मिलि सतगुर पुरख धिआईऐ ॥२॥

Satagur jevadu avaru na koee mili satagur purakh dhiaaeeai ||2||

No one else is as great as the True Guru; meeting the True Guru, I meditate on the Lord, the Primal Being. ||2||


ਸਤਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਲਾਜ ਰਖਾਈਐ ॥

सतगुर सरणि परे तिन पाइआ मेरे ठाकुर लाज रखाईऐ ॥

Satagur sara(nn)i pare tin paaiaa mere thaakur laaj rakhaaeeai ||

Those who seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru find the Lord. My Lord and Master saves their honor.

ਇਕਿ ਅਪਣੈ ਸੁਆਇ ਆਇ ਬਹਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਈਐ ॥੩॥

इकि अपणै सुआइ आइ बहहि गुर आगै जिउ बगुल समाधि लगाईऐ ॥३॥

Iki apa(nn)ai suaai aai bahahi gur aagai jiu bagul samaadhi lagaaeeai ||3||

Some come for their own purposes, and sit before the Guru; they pretend to be in Samaadhi, like storks with their eyes closed. ||3||


ਬਗੁਲਾ ਕਾਗ ਨੀਚ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਾਇ ਕਰੰਗ ਬਿਖੂ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

बगुला काग नीच की संगति जाइ करंग बिखू मुखि लाईऐ ॥

Bagulaa kaag neech kee sanggati jaai karangg bikhoo mukhi laaeeai ||

Associating with the wretched and the lowly, like the stork and the crow, is like feeding on a carcass of poison.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹੰਸੁ ਕਰਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੪॥

नानक मेलि मेलि प्रभ संगति मिलि संगति हंसु कराईऐ ॥४॥४॥

Naanak meli meli prbh sanggati mili sanggati hanssu karaaeeai ||4||4||

Nanak: O God, unite me with the Sangat, the Congregation. United with the Sangat, I will become a swan. ||4||4||

सतगुर दइआ करहु हरि मेलहु मेरे प्रीतम प्राण हरि राइआ ॥

Satagur daiaa karahu hari melahu mere preetam praa(nn) hari raaiaa ||

O True Guru, please be kind, and unite me with the Lord. My Sovereign Lord is the Beloved of my breath of life.

ਹਮ ਚੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਲਗਹ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੰਥੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

हम चेरी होइ लगह गुर चरणी जिनि हरि प्रभ मारगु पंथु दिखाइआ ॥१॥

Ham cheree hoi lagah gur chara(nn)ee jini hari prbh maaragu pantthu dikhaaiaa ||1||

I am a slave; I fall at the Guru's feet. He has shown me the Path, the Way to my Lord God. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

राम मै हरि हरि नामु मनि भाइआ ॥

Raam mai hari hari naamu mani bhaaiaa ||

The Name of my Lord, Har, Har, is pleasing to my mind.

ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਬੇਲੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਖਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मै हरि बिनु अवरु न कोई बेली मेरा पिता माता हरि सखाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mai hari binu avaru na koee belee meraa pitaa maataa hari sakhaaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

I have no friend except the Lord; the Lord is my father, my mother, my companion. ||1|| Pause ||


ਮੇਰੇ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨ ਰਹਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਖੇ ਮਰਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

मेरे इकु खिनु प्रान न रहहि बिनु प्रीतम बिनु देखे मरहि मेरी माइआ ॥

Mere iku khinu praan na rahahi binu preetam binu dekhe marahi meree maaiaa ||

My breath of life will not survive for an instant, without my Beloved; unless I see Him, I will die, O my mother!

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਏ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

धनु धनु वड भाग गुर सरणी आए हरि गुर मिलि दरसनु पाइआ ॥२॥

Dhanu dhanu vad bhaag gur sara(nn)ee aae hari gur mili darasanu paaiaa ||2||

Blessed, blessed is my great, high destiny, that I have come to the Guru's Sanctuary. Meeting with the Guru, I have obtained the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan. ||2||


ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਸੂਝੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਾਇਆ ॥

मै अवरु न कोई सूझै बूझै मनि हरि जपु जपउ जपाइआ ॥

Mai avaru na koee soojhai boojhai mani hari japu japau japaaiaa ||

I do not know or understand any other within my mind; I meditate and chant the Lord's Chant.

ਨਾਮਹੀਣ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸੇ ਨਕਟੇ ਤਿਨ ਘਸਿ ਘਸਿ ਨਕ ਵਢਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

नामहीण फिरहि से नकटे तिन घसि घसि नक वढाइआ ॥३॥

Naamahee(nn) phirahi se nakate tin ghasi ghasi nak vadhaaiaa ||3||

Those who lack the Naam, wander in shame; their noses are chopped off, bit by bit. ||3||


ਮੋ ਕਉ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਜੀਵਾਲਿ ਲੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥

मो कउ जगजीवन जीवालि लै सुआमी रिद अंतरि नामु वसाइआ ॥

Mo kau jagajeevan jeevaali lai suaamee rid anttari naamu vasaaiaa ||

O Life of the World, rejuvenate me! O my Lord and Master, enshrine Your Name deep within my heart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥

नानक गुरू गुरू है पूरा मिलि सतिगुर नामु धिआइआ ॥४॥५॥

Naanak guroo guroo hai pooraa mili satigur naamu dhiaaiaa ||4||5||

O Nanak, perfect is the Guru, the Guru. Meeting the True Guru, I meditate on the Naam. ||4||5||

सतगुरु दाता वडा वड पुरखु है जितु मिलिऐ हरि उर धारे ॥

Sataguru daataa vadaa vad purakhu hai jitu miliai hari ur dhaare ||

The True Guru, the Great Giver, is the Great, Primal Being; meeting Him, the Lord is enshrined within the heart.

ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

जीअ दानु गुरि पूरै दीआ हरि अम्रित नामु समारे ॥१॥

Jeea daanu guri poorai deeaa hari ammmrit naamu samaare ||1||

The Perfect Guru has granted me the life of the soul; I meditate in remembrance on the Ambrosial Name of the Lord. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੰਠਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

राम गुरि हरि हरि नामु कंठि धारे ॥

Raam guri hari hari naamu kantthi dhaare ||

O Lord, the Guru has implanted the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, within my heart.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣੀ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि कथा सुणी मनि भाई धनु धनु वड भाग हमारे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guramukhi kathaa su(nn)ee mani bhaaee dhanu dhanu vad bhaag hamaare ||1|| rahaau ||

As Gurmukh, I have heard His sermon, which pleases my mind; blessed, blessed is my great destiny. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕੋਟਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਾਰੇ ॥

कोटि कोटि तेतीस धिआवहि ता का अंतु न पावहि पारे ॥

Koti koti tetees dhiaavahi taa kaa anttu na paavahi paare ||

Millions, three hundred thirty millions of gods meditate on Him, but they cannot find His end or limitation.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਾਮ ਕਾਮਨੀ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਾਥੁ ਪਸਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

हिरदै काम कामनी मागहि रिधि मागहि हाथु पसारे ॥२॥

Hiradai kaam kaamanee maagahi ridhi maagahi haathu pasaare ||2||

With sexual urges in their hearts, they beg for beautiful women; stretching out their hands, they beg for riches. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਜਪਿ ਜਪੁ ਵਡਾ ਵਡੇਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਖਉ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

हरि जसु जपि जपु वडा वडेरा गुरमुखि रखउ उरि धारे ॥

Hari jasu japi japu vadaa vaderaa guramukhi rakhau uri dhaare ||

One who chants the Praises of the Lord is the greatest of the great; the Gurmukh keeps the Lord clasped to his heart.

ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥

जे वड भाग होवहि ता जपीऐ हरि भउजलु पारि उतारे ॥३॥

Je vad bhaag hovahi taa japeeai hari bhaujalu paari utaare ||3||

If one is blessed with high destiny, he meditates on the Lord, who carries him across the terrifying world-ocean. ||3||


ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਕੰਠਿ ਜਨ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

हरि जन निकटि निकटि हरि जन है हरि राखै कंठि जन धारे ॥

Hari jan nikati nikati hari jan hai hari raakhai kantthi jan dhaare ||

The Lord is close to His humble servant, and His humble servant is close to the Lord; He keeps His humble servant clasped to His Heart.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰੇ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੮॥

नानक पिता माता है हरि प्रभु हम बारिक हरि प्रतिपारे ॥४॥६॥१८॥

Naanak pitaa maataa hai hari prbhu ham baarik hari prtipaare ||4||6||18||

O Nanak, the Lord God is our father and mother. I am His child; the Lord cherishes me. ||4||6||18||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਣੁ ਅਵਗਣੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

किरपा करहु दीन के दाते मेरा गुणु अवगणु न बीचारहु कोई ॥

Kirapaa karahu deen ke daate meraa gu(nn)u avaga(nn)u na beechaarahu koee ||

Have mercy on me, O Generous Giver, Lord of the meek; please do not consider my merits and demerits.

ਮਾਟੀ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਧੋਪੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਮਾਣਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਏਹੀ ॥੧॥

माटी का किआ धोपै सुआमी माणस की गति एही ॥१॥

Maatee kaa kiaa dhopai suaamee maa(nn)as kee gati ehee ||1||

How can dust be washed? O my Lord and Master, such is the state of mankind. ||1||


ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

मेरे मन सतिगुरु सेवि सुखु होई ॥

Mere man satiguru sevi sukhu hoee ||

O my mind, serve the True Guru, and be at peace.

ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जो इछहु सोई फलु पावहु फिरि दूखु न विआपै कोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jo ichhahu soee phalu paavahu phiri dookhu na viaapai koee ||1|| rahaau ||

Whatever you desire, you shall receive that reward, and you shall not be afflicted by pain any longer. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਾਚੇ ਭਾਡੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

काचे भाडे साजि निवाजे अंतरि जोति समाई ॥

Kaache bhaade saaji nivaaje anttari joti samaaee ||

He creates and adorns the earthen vessels; He infuses His Light within them.

ਜੈਸਾ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਹਮ ਤੈਸੀ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੨॥

जैसा लिखतु लिखिआ धुरि करतै हम तैसी किरति कमाई ॥२॥

Jaisaa likhatu likhiaa dhuri karatai ham taisee kirati kamaaee ||2||

As is the destiny pre-ordained by the Creator, so are the deeds we do. ||2||


ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਥਾਪਿ ਕੀਆ ਸਭੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਏਹੋ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

मनु तनु थापि कीआ सभु अपना एहो आवण जाणा ॥

Manu tanu thaapi keeaa sabhu apanaa eho aava(nn) jaa(nn)aa ||

He believes the mind and body are all his own; this is the cause of his coming and going.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਸੋ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਲਪਟਾਣਾ ॥੩॥

जिनि दीआ सो चिति न आवै मोहि अंधु लपटाणा ॥३॥

Jini deeaa so chiti na aavai mohi anddhu lapataa(nn)aa ||3||

He does not think of the One who gave him these; he is blind, entangled in emotional attachment. ||3||


ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

जिनि कीआ सोई प्रभु जाणै हरि का महलु अपारा ॥

Jini keeaa soee prbhu jaa(nn)ai hari kaa mahalu apaaraa ||

One who knows that God created him, reaches the Incomparable Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

भगति करी हरि के गुण गावा नानक दासु तुमारा ॥४॥१॥

Bhagati karee hari ke gu(nn) gaavaa naanak daasu tumaaraa ||4||1||

Worshipping the Lord, I sing His Glorious Praises. Nanak is Your slave. ||4||1||

ਪਵਹੁ ਚਰਣਾ ਤਲਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਆਵਹੁ ਐਸੀ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥

पवहु चरणा तलि ऊपरि आवहु ऐसी सेव कमावहु ॥

Pavahu chara(nn)aa tali upari aavahu aisee sev kamaavahu ||

Place yourself beneath all men's feet, and you will be uplifted; serve Him in this way.

ਆਪਸ ਤੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਸਭ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਤਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥

आपस ते ऊपरि सभ जाणहु तउ दरगह सुखु पावहु ॥१॥

Aapas te upari sabh jaa(nn)ahu tau daragah sukhu paavahu ||1||

Know that all are above you, and you shall find peace in the Court of the Lord. ||1||


ਸੰਤਹੁ ਐਸੀ ਕਥਹੁ ਕਹਾਣੀ ॥

संतहु ऐसी कथहु कहाणी ॥

Santtahu aisee kathahu kahaa(nn)ee ||

O Saints, speak that speech,

ਸੁਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਰ ਦੇਵ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਖਿਨੁ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सुर पवित्र नर देव पवित्रा खिनु बोलहु गुरमुखि बाणी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sur pavitr nar dev pavitraa khinu bolahu guramukhi baa(nn)ee ||1|| rahaau ||

which purifies the gods and sanctifies the divine beings. As Gurmukh, chant the Word of His Bani, even for an instant. ||1||Pause||


ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਝੂਠਾ ਕਹਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

परपंचु छोडि सहज घरि बैसहु झूठा कहहु न कोई ॥

Parapancchu chhodi sahaj ghari baisahu jhoothaa kahahu na koee ||

Renounce your fraudulent plans, and dwell in the celestial palace; do not call anyone else false.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਨਵੈ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਤਤੁ ਬਿਲੋਈ ॥੨॥

सतिगुर मिलहु नवै निधि पावहु इन बिधि ततु बिलोई ॥२॥

Satigur milahu navai nidhi paavahu in bidhi tatu biloee ||2||

Meeting with the True Guru, you shall receive the nine treasures; in this way, you shall find the essence of reality. ||2||


ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥

भरमु चुकावहु गुरमुखि लिव लावहु आतमु चीनहु भाई ॥

Bharamu chukaavahu guramukhi liv laavahu aatamu cheenahu bhaaee ||

Eradicate doubt, and as Gurmukh, enshrine love for the Lord; understand your own soul, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੁਰਾਈ ॥੩॥

निकटि करि जाणहु सदा प्रभु हाजरु किसु सिउ करहु बुराई ॥३॥

Nikati kari jaa(nn)ahu sadaa prbhu haajaru kisu siu karahu buraaee ||3||

Know that God is near at hand, and ever-present. How could you try to hurt anyone else? ||3||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥

सतिगुरि मिलिऐ मारगु मुकता सहजे मिले सुआमी ॥

Satiguri miliai maaragu mukataa sahaje mile suaamee ||

Meeting with the True Guru, your path shall be clear, and you shall easily meet your Lord and Master.

ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਜਿਨੀ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੀ ॥੪॥੨॥

धनु धनु से जन जिनी कलि महि हरि पाइआ जन नानक सद कुरबानी ॥४॥२॥

Dhanu dhanu se jan jinee kali mahi hari paaiaa jan naanak sad kurabaanee ||4||2||

Blessed, blessed are those humble beings, who, in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, find the Lord. Nanak is forever a sacrifice to them. ||4||2||

ਆਵਤ ਹਰਖ ਨ ਜਾਵਤ ਦੂਖਾ ਨਹ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਮਨ ਰੋਗਨੀ ॥

आवत हरख न जावत दूखा नह बिआपै मन रोगनी ॥

Aavat harakh na jaavat dookhaa nah biaapai man roganee ||

Coming does not please me, and going does not bring me pain, and so my mind is not afflicted by disease.

ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਉ ਉਤਰੀ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਓਗਨੀ ॥੧॥

सदा अनंदु गुरु पूरा पाइआ तउ उतरी सगल बिओगनी ॥१॥

Sadaa ananddu guru pooraa paaiaa tau utaree sagal bioganee ||1||

I am in bliss forever, for I have found the Perfect Guru; my separation from the Lord is totally ended. ||1||


ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੈ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗਨੀ ॥

इह बिधि है मनु जोगनी ॥

Ih bidhi hai manu joganee ||

This is how I have joined my mind to the Lord.

ਮੋਹੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਰੋਗੁ ਲੋਗੁ ਨ ਬਿਆਪੈ ਤਹ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मोहु सोगु रोगु लोगु न बिआपै तह हरि हरि हरि रस भोगनी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Mohu sogu rogu logu na biaapai tah hari hari hari ras bhoganee ||1|| rahaau ||

Attachment, sorrow, disease and public opinion do not affect me, and so, I enjoy the subtle essence of the Lord, Har, Har, Har. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸੁਰਗ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਿਰਤ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਪਇਆਲ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਅਲੋਗਨੀ ॥

सुरग पवित्रा मिरत पवित्रा पइआल पवित्र अलोगनी ॥

Surag pavitraa mirat pavitraa paiaal pavitr aloganee ||

I am pure in the heavenly realm, pure on this earth, and pure in the nether regions of the underworld. I remain apart from the people of the world.

ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਭੁੰਚੈ ਜਤ ਕਤ ਪੇਖਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨੀ ॥੨॥

आगिआकारी सदा सुखु भुंचै जत कत पेखउ हरि गुनी ॥२॥

Aagiaakaaree sadaa sukhu bhuncchai jat kat pekhau hari gunee ||2||

Obedient to the Lord, I enjoy peace forever; wherever I look, I see the Lord of glorious virtues. ||2||


ਨਹ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਜਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਵਨਾ ਤਹ ਅਕਾਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੇਦਨੀ ॥

नह सिव सकती जलु नही पवना तह अकारु नही मेदनी ॥

Nah siv sakatee jalu nahee pavanaa tah akaaru nahee medanee ||

There is no Shiva or Shakti, no energy or matter, no water or wind, no world of form there,

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜੋਗ ਕਾ ਤਹਾ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਜਹ ਅਵਿਗਤ ਨਾਥੁ ਅਗਮ ਧਨੀ ॥੩॥

सतिगुर जोग का तहा निवासा जह अविगत नाथु अगम धनी ॥३॥

Satigur jog kaa tahaa nivaasaa jah avigat naathu agam dhanee ||3||

Where the True Guru, the Yogi, dwells, where the Imperishable Lord God, the Unapproachable Master abides. ||3||


ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਗਨੀ ॥

तनु मनु हरि का धनु सभु हरि का हरि के गुण हउ किआ गनी ॥

Tanu manu hari kaa dhanu sabhu hari kaa hari ke gu(nn) hau kiaa ganee ||

Body and mind belong to the Lord; all wealth belongs to the Lord; what glorious virtues of the Lord can I describe?

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਖੋਈ ਹੈ ਅੰਭੈ ਅੰਭੁ ਮਿਲੋਗਨੀ ॥੪॥੩॥

कहु नानक हम तुम गुरि खोई है अ्मभै अ्मभु मिलोगनी ॥४॥३॥

Kahu naanak ham tum guri khoee hai ambbhai ambbhu miloganee ||4||3||

Says Nanak, the Guru has destroyed my sense of 'mine and yours'. Like water with water, I am blended with God. ||4||3||

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਰਹਤ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਿਧ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

त्रै गुण रहत रहै निरारी साधिक सिध न जानै ॥

Trai gu(nn) rahat rahai niraaree saadhik sidh na jaanai ||

It is beyond the three qualities; it remains untouched. The seekers and Siddhas do not know it.

ਰਤਨ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਖਜਾਨੈ ॥੧॥

रतन कोठड़ी अम्रित स्मपूरन सतिगुर कै खजानै ॥१॥

Ratan kotha(rr)ee ammmrit samppooran satigur kai khajaanai ||1||

There is a chamber filled with jewels, overflowing with Ambrosial Nectar, in the Guru's Treasury. ||1||


ਅਚਰਜੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

अचरजु किछु कहणु न जाई ॥

Acharaju kichhu kaha(nn)u na jaaee ||

This thing is wonderful and amazing! It cannot be described.

ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बसतु अगोचर भाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Basatu agochar bhaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

It is an unfathomable object, O Siblings of Destiny! ||1|| Pause ||


ਮੋਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥

मोलु नाही कछु करणै जोगा किआ को कहै सुणावै ॥

Molu naahee kachhu kara(nn)ai jogaa kiaa ko kahai su(nn)aavai ||

Its value cannot be estimated at all; what can anyone say about it?

ਕਥਨ ਕਹਣ ਕਉ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੋ ਪੇਖੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਣਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥

कथन कहण कउ सोझी नाही जो पेखै तिसु बणि आवै ॥२॥

Kathan kaha(nn) kau sojhee naahee jo pekhai tisu ba(nn)i aavai ||2||

By speaking and describing it, it cannot be understood; only one who sees it realizes it. ||2||


ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥

सोई जाणै करणैहारा कीता किआ बेचारा ॥

Soee jaa(nn)ai kara(nn)aihaaraa keetaa kiaa bechaaraa ||

Only the Creator Lord knows it; what can any poor creature do?

ਆਪਣੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਪੂਰ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

आपणी गति मिति आपे जाणै हरि आपे पूर भंडारा ॥३॥

Aapa(nn)ee gati miti aape jaa(nn)ai hari aape poor bhanddaaraa ||3||

Only He Himself knows His own state and extent. The Lord Himself is the treasure overflowing. ||3||


ਐਸਾ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਰਹੇ ਆਘਾਈ ॥

ऐसा रसु अम्रितु मनि चाखिआ त्रिपति रहे आघाई ॥

Aisaa rasu ammmritu mani chaakhiaa tripati rahe aaghaaee ||

Tasting such Ambrosial Nectar, the mind remains satisfied and satiated.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਸਾ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥

कहु नानक मेरी आसा पूरी सतिगुर की सरणाई ॥४॥४॥

Kahu naanak meree aasaa pooree satigur kee sara(nn)aaee ||4||4||

Says Nanak, my hopes are fulfilled; I have found the Guru's Sanctuary. ||4||4||

अंगीकारु कीआ प्रभि अपनै बैरी सगले साधे ॥

Anggeekaaru keeaa prbhi apanai bairee sagale saadhe ||

God has made me His own, and vanquished all my enemies.

ਜਿਨਿ ਬੈਰੀ ਹੈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਤੇ ਬੈਰੀ ਲੈ ਬਾਧੇ ॥੧॥

जिनि बैरी है इहु जगु लूटिआ ते बैरी लै बाधे ॥१॥

Jini bairee hai ihu jagu lootiaa te bairee lai baadhe ||1||

Those enemies who have plundered this world, have all been placed in bondage. ||1||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥

सतिगुरु परमेसरु मेरा ॥

Satiguru paramesaru meraa ||

The True Guru is my Transcendent Lord.

ਅਨਿਕ ਰਾਜ ਭੋਗ ਰਸ ਮਾਣੀ ਨਾਉ ਜਪੀ ਭਰਵਾਸਾ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अनिक राज भोग रस माणी नाउ जपी भरवासा तेरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anik raaj bhog ras maa(nn)ee naau japee bharavaasaa teraa ||1|| rahaau ||

I enjoy countless pleasures of power and tasty delights, chanting Your Name, and placing my faith in You. ||1|| Pause ||


ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਬਾਤਾ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਰਖਵਾਰਾ ॥

चीति न आवसि दूजी बाता सिर ऊपरि रखवारा ॥

Cheeti na aavasi doojee baataa sir upari rakhavaaraa ||

I do not think of any other at all. The Lord is my protector, above my head.

ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਰਹਤ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਕੈ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

बेपरवाहु रहत है सुआमी इक नाम कै आधारा ॥२॥

Beparavaahu rahat hai suaamee ik naam kai aadhaaraa ||2||

I am carefree and independent, when I have the Support of Your Name, O my Lord and Master. ||2||


ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਊਨ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਬਾਤਾ ॥

पूरन होइ मिलिओ सुखदाई ऊन न काई बाता ॥

Pooran hoi milio sukhadaaee un na kaaee baataa ||

I have become perfect, meeting with the Giver of peace, and now, I lack nothing at all.

ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਕਤਹੂ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੩॥

ततु सारु परम पदु पाइआ छोडि न कतहू जाता ॥३॥

Tatu saaru param padu paaiaa chhodi na katahoo jaataa ||3||

I have obtained the essence of excellence, the supreme status; I shall not forsake it to go anywhere else. ||3||


ਬਰਨਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਉ ਜੈਸਾ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

बरनि न साकउ जैसा तू है साचे अलख अपारा ॥

Barani na saakau jaisaa too hai saache alakh apaaraa ||

I cannot describe how You are, O True Lord, unseen, infinite,

ਅਤੁਲ ਅਥਾਹ ਅਡੋਲ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੫॥

अतुल अथाह अडोल सुआमी नानक खसमु हमारा ॥४॥५॥

Atul athaah adol suaamee naanak khasamu hamaaraa ||4||5||

Immeasurable, unfathomable and unmoving Lord. O Nanak, He is my Lord and Master. ||4||5||

ਤੂ ਦਾਨਾ ਤੂ ਅਬਿਚਲੁ ਤੂਹੀ ਤੂ ਜਾਤਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਾਤੀ ॥

तू दाना तू अबिचलु तूही तू जाति मेरी पाती ॥

Too daanaa too abichalu toohee too jaati meree paatee ||

You are wise; You are eternal and unchanging. You are my social class and honor.

ਤੂ ਅਡੋਲੁ ਕਦੇ ਡੋਲਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਹਮ ਕੈਸੀ ਤਾਤੀ ॥੧॥

तू अडोलु कदे डोलहि नाही ता हम कैसी ताती ॥१॥

Too adolu kade dolahi naahee taa ham kaisee taatee ||1||

You are unmoving - You never move at all. How can I be worried? ||1||


ਏਕੈ ਏਕੈ ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ॥

एकै एकै एक तूही ॥

Ekai ekai ek toohee ||

You alone are the One and only Lord;

ਏਕੈ ਏਕੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਇਆ ॥

एकै एकै तू राइआ ॥

Ekai ekai too raaiaa ||

You alone are the king.

ਤਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तउ किरपा ते सुखु पाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tau kirapaa te sukhu paaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

By Your Grace, I have found peace. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤੂ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਤੁਮ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਣਕ ਲਾਲਾ ॥

तू सागरु हम हंस तुमारे तुम महि माणक लाला ॥

Too saagaru ham hanss tumaare tum mahi maa(nn)ak laalaa ||

You are the ocean, and I am Your swan; the pearls and rubies are in You.

ਤੁਮ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਸੰਕ ਨ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਹਮ ਭੁੰਚਹ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

तुम देवहु तिलु संक न मानहु हम भुंचह सदा निहाला ॥२॥

Tum devahu tilu sankk na maanahu ham bhuncchah sadaa nihaalaa ||2||

You give, and You do not hesitate for an instant; I receive, forever enraptured. ||2||


ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੁਮ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਤੁਮ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਖੀਰਾ ॥

हम बारिक तुम पिता हमारे तुम मुखि देवहु खीरा ॥

Ham baarik tum pitaa hamaare tum mukhi devahu kheeraa ||

I am Your child, and You are my father; You place the milk in my mouth.

ਹਮ ਖੇਲਹ ਸਭਿ ਲਾਡ ਲਡਾਵਹ ਤੁਮ ਸਦ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥੩॥

हम खेलह सभि लाड लडावह तुम सद गुणी गहीरा ॥३॥

Ham khelah sabhi laad ladaavah tum sad gu(nn)ee gaheeraa ||3||

I play with You, and You caress me in every way. You are forever the ocean of excellence. ||3||


ਤੁਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਹਮ ਭੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਘਾਏ ॥

तुम पूरन पूरि रहे स्मपूरन हम भी संगि अघाए ॥

Tum pooran poori rahe samppooran ham bhee sanggi aghaae ||

You are perfect, perfectly all-pervading; I am fulfilled with You as well.

ਮਿਲਤ ਮਿਲਤ ਮਿਲਤ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੪॥੬॥

मिलत मिलत मिलत मिलि रहिआ नानक कहणु न जाए ॥४॥६॥

Milat milat milat mili rahiaa naanak kaha(nn)u na jaae ||4||6||

I am merged, merged, merged and remain merged; O Nanak, I cannot describe it! ||4||6||

ਕਰ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਲ ਪਖਾਵਜੁ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਮਾਥੈ ਵਜਹਿ ਰਬਾਬਾ ॥

कर करि ताल पखावजु नैनहु माथै वजहि रबाबा ॥

Kar kari taal pakhaavaju nainahu maathai vajahi rabaabaa ||

Make your hands the cymbals, your eyes the tambourines, and your forehead the guitar you play.

ਕਰਨਹੁ ਮਧੁ ਬਾਸੁਰੀ ਬਾਜੈ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਆਗਾਜਾ ॥

करनहु मधु बासुरी बाजै जिहवा धुनि आगाजा ॥

Karanahu madhu baasuree baajai jihavaa dhuni aagaajaa ||

Let the sweet flute music resound in your ears, and with your tongue, vibrate this song.

ਨਿਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਨਾਚੈ ਆਣੇ ਘੂਘਰ ਸਾਜਾ ॥੧॥

निरति करे करि मनूआ नाचै आणे घूघर साजा ॥१॥

Nirati kare kari manooaa naachai aa(nn)e ghooghar saajaa ||1||

Move your mind like the rhythmic hand-motions; do the dance, and shake your ankle bracelets. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਕੋ ਨਿਰਤਿਕਾਰੀ ॥

राम को निरतिकारी ॥

Raam ko niratikaaree ||

This is the rhythmic dance of the Lord.

ਪੇਖੈ ਪੇਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਦਇਆਲਾ ਜੇਤਾ ਸਾਜੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पेखै पेखनहारु दइआला जेता साजु सीगारी ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Pekhai pekhanahaaru daiaalaa jetaa saaju seegaaree ||1|| rahaau ||

The Merciful Audience, the Lord, sees all your make-up and decorations. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਖਾਰ ਮੰਡਲੀ ਧਰਣਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਊਪਰਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਚੰਦੋਆ ॥

आखार मंडली धरणि सबाई ऊपरि गगनु चंदोआ ॥

Aakhaar manddalee dhara(nn)i sabaaee upari gaganu chanddoaa ||

The whole earth is the stage, with the canopy of the sky overhead.

ਪਵਨੁ ਵਿਚੋਲਾ ਕਰਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਓਪਤਿ ਹੋਆ ॥

पवनु विचोला करत इकेला जल ते ओपति होआ ॥

Pavanu vicholaa karat ikelaa jal te opati hoaa ||

The wind is the director; people are born of water.

ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਤਰਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਕਿਰਤ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਆ ॥੨॥

पंच ततु करि पुतरा कीना किरत मिलावा होआ ॥२॥

Pancch tatu kari putaraa keenaa kirat milaavaa hoaa ||2||

From the five elements, the puppet was created with its actions. ||2||


ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਜਰੇ ਚਰਾਗਾ ਚਹੁ ਕੁੰਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥

चंदु सूरजु दुइ जरे चरागा चहु कुंट भीतरि राखे ॥

Chanddu sooraju dui jare charaagaa chahu kuntt bheetari raakhe ||

The sun and the moon are the two lamps which shine, with the four corners of the world placed between them.

ਦਸ ਪਾਤਉ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਗੀਤਾ ਏਕੈ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਾਥੇ ॥

दस पातउ पंच संगीता एकै भीतरि साथे ॥

Das paatau pancch sanggeetaa ekai bheetari saathe ||

The ten senses are the dancing girls, and the five passions are the chorus; they sit together within the one body.

ਭਿੰਨ ਭਿੰਨ ਹੋਇ ਭਾਵ ਦਿਖਾਵਹਿ ਸਭਹੁ ਨਿਰਾਰੀ ਭਾਖੇ ॥੩॥

भिंन भिंन होइ भाव दिखावहि सभहु निरारी भाखे ॥३॥

Bhinn bhinn hoi bhaav dikhaavahi sabhahu niraaree bhaakhe ||3||

They all put on their own shows, and speak in different languages. ||3||


ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਾਜੈ ਤੂਰਾ ॥

घरि घरि निरति होवै दिनु राती घटि घटि वाजै तूरा ॥

Ghari ghari nirati hovai dinu raatee ghati ghati vaajai tooraa ||

In each and every home there is dancing, day and night; in each and every home, the bugles blow.

ਏਕਿ ਨਚਾਵਹਿ ਏਕਿ ਭਵਾਵਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਹੋਇ ਧੂਰਾ ॥

एकि नचावहि एकि भवावहि इकि आइ जाइ होइ धूरा ॥

Eki nachaavahi eki bhavaavahi iki aai jaai hoi dhooraa ||

Some are made to dance, and some are whirled around; some come and some go, and some are reduced to dust.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਨਾਚੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੪॥੭॥

कहु नानक सो बहुरि न नाचै जिसु गुरु भेटै पूरा ॥४॥७॥

Kahu naanak so bahuri na naachai jisu guru bhetai pooraa ||4||7||

Says Nanak, one who meets with the True Guru, does not have to dance the dance of reincarnation again. ||4||7||

ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਏਕ ਧੁਨਿ ਏਕੈ ਏਕੈ ਰਾਗੁ ਅਲਾਪੈ ॥

ओअंकारि एक धुनि एकै एकै रागु अलापै ॥

Oamkkaari ek dhuni ekai ekai raagu alaapai ||

He sings the song of the One Universal Creator; he sings the tune of the One Lord.

ਏਕਾ ਦੇਸੀ ਏਕੁ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਏਕੋ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਿਆਪੈ ॥

एका देसी एकु दिखावै एको रहिआ बिआपै ॥

Ekaa desee eku dikhaavai eko rahiaa biaapai ||

He lives in the land of the One Lord, shows the way to the One Lord, and remains attuned to the One Lord.

ਏਕਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਏਕਾ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਏਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥

एका सुरति एका ही सेवा एको गुर ते जापै ॥१॥

Ekaa surati ekaa hee sevaa eko gur te jaapai ||1||

He centers his consciousness on the One Lord, and serves only the One Lord, who is known through the Guru. ||1||


ਭਲੋ ਭਲੋ ਰੇ ਕੀਰਤਨੀਆ ॥

भलो भलो रे कीरतनीआ ॥

Bhalo bhalo re keerataneeaa ||

Blessed and good is such a kirtanee, who sings such Praises.

ਰਾਮ ਰਮਾ ਰਾਮਾ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਉ ॥

राम रमा रामा गुन गाउ ॥

Raam ramaa raamaa gun gaau ||

He sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord,

ਛੋਡਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਧੰਧ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

छोडि माइआ के धंध सुआउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Chhodi maaiaa ke dhanddh suaau ||1|| rahaau ||

And renounces the entanglements and pursuits of Maya. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪੰਚ ਬਜਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੇ ਸੰਤੋਖਾ ਸਾਤ ਸੁਰਾ ਲੈ ਚਾਲੈ ॥

पंच बजित्र करे संतोखा सात सुरा लै चालै ॥

Pancch bajitr kare santtokhaa saat suraa lai chaalai ||

He makes the five virtues, like contentment, his musical instruments, and plays the seven notes of the love of the Lord.

ਬਾਜਾ ਮਾਣੁ ਤਾਣੁ ਤਜਿ ਤਾਨਾ ਪਾਉ ਨ ਬੀਗਾ ਘਾਲੈ ॥

बाजा माणु ताणु तजि ताना पाउ न बीगा घालै ॥

Baajaa maa(nn)u taa(nn)u taji taanaa paau na beegaa ghaalai ||

The notes he plays are the renunciation of pride and power; his feet keep the beat on the straight path.

ਫੇਰੀ ਫੇਰੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਾਲੈ ॥੨॥

फेरी फेरु न होवै कब ही एकु सबदु बंधि पालै ॥२॥

Pheree pheru na hovai kab hee eku sabadu banddhi paalai ||2||

He does not enter the cycle of reincarnation ever again; he keeps the One Word of the Shabad tied to the hem of his robe. ||2||


ਨਾਰਦੀ ਨਰਹਰ ਜਾਣਿ ਹਦੂਰੇ ॥

नारदी नरहर जाणि हदूरे ॥

Naaradee narahar jaa(nn)i hadoore ||

To play like Naarad, is to know that the Lord is ever-present.

ਘੂੰਘਰ ਖੜਕੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਵਿਸੂਰੇ ॥

घूंघर खड़कु तिआगि विसूरे ॥

Ghoongghar kha(rr)aku tiaagi visoore ||

The tinkling of the ankle bells is the shedding of sorrows and worries.

ਸਹਜ ਅਨੰਦ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

सहज अनंद दिखावै भावै ॥

Sahaj anandd dikhaavai bhaavai ||

The dramatic gestures of acting are celestial bliss.

ਏਹੁ ਨਿਰਤਿਕਾਰੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੩॥

एहु निरतिकारी जनमि न आवै ॥३॥

Ehu niratikaaree janami na aavai ||3||

Such a dancer is not reincarnated again. ||3||


ਜੇ ਕੋ ਅਪਨੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

जे को अपने ठाकुर भावै ॥

Je ko apane thaakur bhaavai ||

If anyone, becomes pleasing to his Lord and Master,

ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧਿ ਏਹੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਵੈ ॥

कोटि मधि एहु कीरतनु गावै ॥

Koti madhi ehu keeratanu gaavai ||

out of millions of people, he sings the Lord's Praises in this way.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਜਾਵਉ ਟੇਕ ॥

साधसंगति की जावउ टेक ॥

Saadhasanggati kee jaavau tek ||

I have taken the Support of the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਏਕ ॥੪॥੮॥

कहु नानक तिसु कीरतनु एक ॥४॥८॥

Kahu naanak tisu keeratanu ek ||4||8||

Says Nanak, the Kirtan of the One Lord's Praises are sung there. ||4||8||

ਕੋਈ ਬੋਲੈ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਕੋਈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥

कोई बोलै राम राम कोई खुदाइ ॥

Koee bolai raam raam koee khudaai ||

Some call Him, 'Raam, Raam', and some call Him, 'Khudaa-i'.

ਕੋਈ ਸੇਵੈ ਗੁਸਈਆ ਕੋਈ ਅਲਾਹਿ ॥੧॥

कोई सेवै गुसईआ कोई अलाहि ॥१॥

Koee sevai gusaeeaa koee alaahi ||1||

Some serve Him as 'Gusain', others as 'Allah'. ||1||


ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਣ ਕਰੀਮ ॥

कारण करण करीम ॥

Kaara(nn) kara(nn) kareem ||

He is the Cause of causes, the Generous Lord.

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹੀਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

किरपा धारि रहीम ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kirapaa dhaari raheem ||1|| rahaau ||

He showers His Grace and Mercy upon us. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕੋਈ ਨਾਵੈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਕੋਈ ਹਜ ਜਾਇ ॥

कोई नावै तीरथि कोई हज जाइ ॥

Koee naavai teerathi koee haj jaai ||

Some bathe at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, and some make the pilgrimage to Mecca.|

ਕੋਈ ਕਰੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਰੁ ਨਿਵਾਇ ॥੨॥

कोई करै पूजा कोई सिरु निवाइ ॥२॥

Koee karai poojaa koee siru nivaai ||2||

Some perform devotional worship services, and some bow their heads in prayer. ||2||


ਕੋਈ ਪੜੈ ਬੇਦ ਕੋਈ ਕਤੇਬ ॥

कोई पड़ै बेद कोई कतेब ॥

Koee pa(rr)ai bed koee kateb ||

Some read the Vedas, and some the Koran.

ਕੋਈ ਓਢੈ ਨੀਲ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਪੇਦ ॥੩॥

कोई ओढै नील कोई सुपेद ॥३॥

Koee odhai neel koee suped ||3||

Some wear blue robes, and some wear white. ||3||


ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ਤੁਰਕੁ ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ਹਿੰਦੂ ॥

कोई कहै तुरकु कोई कहै हिंदू ॥

Koee kahai turaku koee kahai hinddoo ||

Some call themselves Muslim, and some call themselves Hindu.

ਕੋਈ ਬਾਛੈ ਭਿਸਤੁ ਕੋਈ ਸੁਰਗਿੰਦੂ ॥੪॥

कोई बाछै भिसतु कोई सुरगिंदू ॥४॥

Koee baachhai bhisatu koee suraginddoo ||4||

Some yearn for paradise, and others long for heaven. ||4||


ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥

कहु नानक जिनि हुकमु पछाता ॥

Kahu naanak jini hukamu pachhaataa ||

Says Nanak, one who realizes the Hukam of God's Will,

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਤਿਨਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੫॥੯॥

प्रभ साहिब का तिनि भेदु जाता ॥५॥९॥

Prbh saahib kaa tini bhedu jaataa ||5||9||

Knows the secrets of his Lord and Master. ||5||9||

The wind merges into the wind.

ਜੋਤੀ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

जोती महि जोति रलि जाइआ ॥

Jotee mahi joti rali jaaiaa ||

The light blends into the light.

ਮਾਟੀ ਮਾਟੀ ਹੋਈ ਏਕ ॥

माटी माटी होई एक ॥

Maatee maatee hoee ek ||

The dust becomes one with the dust.

ਰੋਵਨਹਾਰੇ ਕੀ ਕਵਨ ਟੇਕ ॥੧॥

रोवनहारे की कवन टेक ॥१॥

Rovanahaare kee kavan tek ||1||

What support is there for the one who is lamenting? ||1||


ਕਉਨੁ ਮੂਆ ਰੇ ਕਉਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥

कउनु मूआ रे कउनु मूआ ॥

Kaunu mooaa re kaunu mooaa ||

Who has died? O, who has died?

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਉ ਚਲਤੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ब्रहम गिआनी मिलि करहु बीचारा इहु तउ चलतु भइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Brham giaanee mili karahu beechaaraa ihu tau chalatu bhaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

O God-realized beings, meet together and consider this. What a wondrous thing has happened! ||1|| Pause ||


ਅਗਲੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

अगली किछु खबरि न पाई ॥

Agalee kichhu khabari na paaee ||

No one knows what happens after death.

ਰੋਵਨਹਾਰੁ ਭਿ ਊਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਈ ॥

रोवनहारु भि ऊठि सिधाई ॥

Rovanahaaru bhi uthi sidhaaee ||

The one who is lamenting will also arise and depart.

ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹ ਕੇ ਬਾਂਧੇ ਬੰਧ ॥

भरम मोह के बांधे बंध ॥

Bharam moh ke baandhe banddh ||

Mortal beings are bound by the bonds of doubt and attachment.

ਸੁਪਨੁ ਭਇਆ ਭਖਲਾਏ ਅੰਧ ॥੨॥

सुपनु भइआ भखलाए अंध ॥२॥

Supanu bhaiaa bhakhalaae anddh ||2||

When life becomes a dream, the blind man babbles and grieves in vain. ||2||


ਇਹੁ ਤਉ ਰਚਨੁ ਰਚਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥

इहु तउ रचनु रचिआ करतारि ॥

Ihu tau rachanu rachiaa karataari ||

The Creator Lord created this creation.

ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਅਪਾਰਿ ॥

आवत जावत हुकमि अपारि ॥

Aavat jaavat hukami apaari ||

It comes and goes, subject to the Will of the Infinite Lord.

ਨਹ ਕੋ ਮੂਆ ਨ ਮਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥

नह को मूआ न मरणै जोगु ॥

Nah ko mooaa na mara(nn)ai jogu ||

No one dies; no one is capable of dying.

ਨਹ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹੋਗੁ ॥੩॥

नह बिनसै अबिनासी होगु ॥३॥

Nah binasai abinaasee hogu ||3||

The soul does not perish; it is imperishable. ||3||


ਜੋ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਣਹੁ ਸੋ ਇਹੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

जो इहु जाणहु सो इहु नाहि ॥

Jo ihu jaa(nn)ahu so ihu naahi ||

That which is known, does not exist.

ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰੇ ਕਉ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

जानणहारे कउ बलि जाउ ॥

Jaana(nn)ahaare kau bali jaau ||

I am a sacrifice to the one who knows this.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥

कहु नानक गुरि भरमु चुकाइआ ॥

Kahu naanak guri bharamu chukaaiaa ||

Says Nanak, the Guru has dispelled my doubt.

ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੦॥

ना कोई मरै न आवै जाइआ ॥४॥१०॥

Naa koee marai na aavai jaaiaa ||4||10||

No one dies; no one comes or goes. ||4||10||


ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

रामकली महला ५ ॥

Raamakalee mahalaa 5 ||

Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:

ਜਪਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਲਾਲੁ ॥

जपि गोबिंदु गोपाल लालु ॥

Japi gobinddu gopaal laalu ||

Meditate on the Lord of the Universe, the Beloved Lord of the World.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਤੂ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਨ ਖਾਈ ਮਹਾ ਕਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

राम नाम सिमरि तू जीवहि फिरि न खाई महा कालु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Raam naam simari too jeevahi phiri na khaaee mahaa kaalu ||1|| rahaau ||

Meditating in remembrance on the Lord's Name, you shall live, and the Great Death shall not consume you ever again. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਇਓ ॥

कोटि जनम भ्रमि भ्रमि भ्रमि आइओ ॥

Koti janam bhrmi bhrmi bhrmi aaio ||

Through millions of incarnations, you have come, wandering, wandering, wandering.

ਬਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥

बडै भागि साधसंगु पाइओ ॥१॥

Badai bhaagi saadhasanggu paaio ||1||

By the highest destiny, you found the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||1||


ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥

बिनु गुर पूरे नाही उधारु ॥

Binu gur poore naahee udhaaru ||

Without the Perfect Guru, no one is saved.

ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥੧੧॥

बाबा नानकु आखै एहु बीचारु ॥२॥११॥

Baabaa naanaku aakhai ehu beechaaru ||2||11||

This is what Baba Nanak says, after deep reflection. ||2||11||

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਚਾਰਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਹਿ ਨਾ ਤੂ ਮਾਨਹਿ ॥

चारि पुकारहि ना तू मानहि ॥

Chaari pukaarahi naa too maanahi ||

The four Vedas proclaim it, but you don't believe them.

ਖਟੁ ਭੀ ਏਕਾ ਬਾਤ ਵਖਾਨਹਿ ॥

खटु भी एका बात वखानहि ॥

Khatu bhee ekaa baat vakhaanahi ||

The six Shaastras also say one thing.

ਦਸ ਅਸਟੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਹਿਆ ॥

दस असटी मिलि एको कहिआ ॥

Das asatee mili eko kahiaa ||

The eighteen Puraanas all speak of the One God.

ਤਾ ਭੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਲਹਿਆ ॥੧॥

ता भी जोगी भेदु न लहिआ ॥१॥

Taa bhee jogee bhedu na lahiaa ||1||

Even so, Yogi, you do not understand this mystery. ||1||


ਕਿੰਕੁਰੀ ਅਨੂਪ ਵਾਜੈ ॥

किंकुरी अनूप वाजै ॥

Kinkkuree anoop vaajai ||
