ਕਰਣ ਕਰੀਮ ਨ ਜਾਤੋ ਕਰਤਾ ਤਿਲ ਪੀੜੇ ਜਿਉ ਘਾਣੀਆ ॥੩॥

करण करीम न जातो करता तिल पीड़े जिउ घाणीआ ॥३॥

Kara(nn) kareem na jaato karataa til pee(rr)e jiu ghaa(nn)eeaa ||3||

They do not know the kind and compassionate Lord; they shall be crushed like sesame seeds in the oil-press. ||3||


ਖੁਸਿ ਖੁਸਿ ਲੈਦਾ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਰਾਈ ॥

खुसि खुसि लैदा वसतु पराई ॥

Khusi khusi laidaa vasatu paraaee ||

You happily, cheerfully steal the possessions of others,

ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਖੁਦਾਈ ॥

वेखै सुणे तेरै नालि खुदाई ॥

Vekhai su(nn)e terai naali khudaaee ||

But the Lord God is with you, watching and listening.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਲਬਿ ਪਇਆ ਖਾਤ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅਗਲੀ ਗਲ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥੪॥

दुनीआ लबि पइआ खात अंदरि अगली गल न जाणीआ ॥४॥

Duneeaa labi paiaa khaat anddari agalee gal na jaa(nn)eeaa ||4||

Through worldly greed, you have fallen into the pit; you know nothing of the future. ||4||


ਜਮਿ ਜਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ॥

जमि जमि मरै मरै फिरि जमै ॥

Jami jami marai marai phiri jammai ||

You shall be born and born again, and die and die again, only to be reincarnated again.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਜਾਇ ਪਇਆ ਦੇਸਿ ਲੰਮੈ ॥

बहुतु सजाइ पइआ देसि लमै ॥

Bahutu sajaai paiaa desi lammai ||

You shall suffer terrible punishment, on your way to the land beyond.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ਅੰਧਾ ਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਹੈ ਪਰਾਣੀਆ ॥੫॥

जिनि कीता तिसै न जाणी अंधा ता दुखु सहै पराणीआ ॥५॥

Jini keetaa tisai na jaa(nn)ee anddhaa taa dukhu sahai paraa(nn)eeaa ||5||

The mortal does not know the One who created him; he is blind, and so he shall suffer. ||5||


ਖਾਲਕ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਮੁਠਾ ॥

खालक थावहु भुला मुठा ॥

Khaalak thaavahu bhulaa muthaa ||

Forgetting the Creator Lord, he is ruined.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖੇਲੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਰੁਠ ਤੁਠਾ ॥

दुनीआ खेलु बुरा रुठ तुठा ॥

Duneeaa khelu buraa ruth tuthaa ||

The drama of the world is bad; it brings sadness and then happiness.

ਸਿਦਕੁ ਸਬੂਰੀ ਸੰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਵਤੈ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੀਆ ॥੬॥

सिदकु सबूरी संतु न मिलिओ वतै आपण भाणीआ ॥६॥

Sidaku sabooree santtu na milio vatai aapa(nn) bhaa(nn)eeaa ||6||

One who does not meet the Saint does not have faith or contentment; he wanders just as he pleases. ||6||


ਮਉਲਾ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭਿ ਆਪੇ ॥

मउला खेल करे सभि आपे ॥

Maulaa khel kare sabhi aape ||

The Lord Himself stages all this drama.

ਇਕਿ ਕਢੇ ਇਕਿ ਲਹਰਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥

इकि कढे इकि लहरि विआपे ॥

Iki kadhe iki lahari viaape ||

Some, he lifts up, and some he throws into the waves.

ਜਿਉ ਨਚਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਨਚਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਿਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਣੀਆ ॥੭॥

जिउ नचाए तिउ तिउ नचनि सिरि सिरि किरत विहाणीआ ॥७॥

Jiu nachaae tiu tiu nachani siri siri kirat vihaa(nn)eeaa ||7||

As He makes them dance, so do they dance. Everyone lives their lives according to their past actions. ||7||


ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥

मिहर करे ता खसमु धिआई ॥

Mihar kare taa khasamu dhiaaee ||

When the Lord and Master grants His Grace, then we meditate on Him.

ਸੰਤਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

संता संगति नरकि न पाई ॥

Santtaa sanggati naraki na paaee ||

In the Society of the Saints, one is not consigned to hell.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਗੁਣ ਗੀਤਾ ਨਿਤ ਵਖਾਣੀਆ ॥੮॥੨॥੮॥੧੨॥੨੦॥

अम्रित नाम दानु नानक कउ गुण गीता नित वखाणीआ ॥८॥२॥८॥१२॥२०॥

Ammmrit naam daanu naanak kau gu(nn) geetaa nit vakhaa(nn)eeaa ||8||2||8||12||20||

Please bless Nanak with the gift of the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord; he continually sings the songs of Your Glories. ||8||2||8||12||20||

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

साचा सचु सोई अवरु न कोई ॥

Saachaa sachu soee avaru na koee ||

The True Lord is True; there is no other at all.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਜੀ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਫੁਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥

जिनि सिरजी तिन ही फुनि गोई ॥

Jini sirajee tin hee phuni goee ||

He who created, shall in the end destroy.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਹਣਾ ਤੁਮ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਮੁਕਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखहु रहणा तुम सिउ किआ मुकराई हे ॥१॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhahu raha(nn)aa tum siu kiaa mukaraaee he ||1||

As it pleases You, so You keep me, and so I remain; what excuse could I offer to You? ||1||


ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਖਪਾਏ ॥

आपि उपाए आपि खपाए ॥

Aapi upaae aapi khapaae ||

You Yourself create, and You Yourself destroy.

ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਏ ॥

आपे सिरि सिरि धंधै लाए ॥

Aape siri siri dhanddhai laae ||

You yourself link each and every person to their tasks.

ਆਪੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

आपे वीचारी गुणकारी आपे मारगि लाई हे ॥२॥

Aape veechaaree gu(nn)akaaree aape maaragi laaee he ||2||

You contemplate Yourself, You Yourself make us worthy; You Yourself place us on the Path. ||2||


ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਬੀਨਾ ॥

आपे दाना आपे बीना ॥

Aape daanaa aape beenaa ||

You Yourself are all-wise, You Yourself are all-knowing.

ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਤੀਨਾ ॥

आपे आपु उपाइ पतीना ॥

Aape aapu upaai pateenaa ||

You Yourself created the Universe, and You are pleased.

ਆਪੇ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

आपे पउणु पाणी बैसंतरु आपे मेलि मिलाई हे ॥३॥

Aape pau(nn)u paa(nn)ee baisanttaru aape meli milaaee he ||3||

You Yourself are the air, water and fire; You Yourself unite in Union. ||3||


ਆਪੇ ਸਸਿ ਸੂਰਾ ਪੂਰੋ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

आपे ससि सूरा पूरो पूरा ॥

Aape sasi sooraa pooro pooraa ||

You Yourself are the moon, the sun, the most perfect of the perfect.

ਆਪੇ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

आपे गिआनि धिआनि गुरु सूरा ॥

Aape giaani dhiaani guru sooraa ||

You Yourself are spiritual wisdom, meditation, and the Guru, the Warrior Hero.

ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

कालु जालु जमु जोहि न साकै साचे सिउ लिव लाई हे ॥४॥

Kaalu jaalu jamu johi na saakai saache siu liv laaee he ||4||

The Messenger of Death, and his noose of death, cannot touch one, who is lovingly focused on You, O True Lord. ||4||


ਆਪੇ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

आपे पुरखु आपे ही नारी ॥

Aape purakhu aape hee naaree ||

You Yourself are the male, and You Yourself are the female.

ਆਪੇ ਪਾਸਾ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਰੀ ॥

आपे पासा आपे सारी ॥

Aape paasaa aape saaree ||

You Yourself are the chess-board, and You Yourself are the chessman.

ਆਪੇ ਪਿੜ ਬਾਧੀ ਜਗੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

आपे पिड़ बाधी जगु खेलै आपे कीमति पाई हे ॥५॥

Aape pi(rr) baadhee jagu khelai aape keemati paaee he ||5||

You Yourself staged the drama in the arena of the world, and You Yourself evaluate the players. ||5||


ਆਪੇ ਭਵਰੁ ਫੁਲੁ ਫਲੁ ਤਰਵਰੁ ॥

आपे भवरु फुलु फलु तरवरु ॥

Aape bhavaru phulu phalu taravaru ||

You Yourself are the bumble bee, the flower, the fruit and the tree.

ਆਪੇ ਜਲੁ ਥਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ॥

आपे जलु थलु सागरु सरवरु ॥

Aape jalu thalu saagaru saravaru ||

You Yourself are the water, the desert, the ocean and the pool.

ਆਪੇ ਮਛੁ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਣੀਕਰੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

आपे मछु कछु करणीकरु तेरा रूपु न लखणा जाई हे ॥६॥

Aape machhu kachhu kara(nn)eekaru teraa roopu na lakha(nn)aa jaaee he ||6||

You Yourself are the great fish, the tortoise, the Cause of causes; Your form cannot be known. ||6||


ਆਪੇ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਰੈਣੀ ॥

आपे दिनसु आपे ही रैणी ॥

Aape dinasu aape hee rai(nn)ee ||

You Yourself are the day, and You Yourself are the night.

ਆਪਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬੈਣੀ ॥

आपि पतीजै गुर की बैणी ॥

Aapi pateejai gur kee bai(nn)ee ||

You Yourself are pleased by the Word of the Guru's Bani.

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਦਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

आदि जुगादि अनाहदि अनदिनु घटि घटि सबदु रजाई हे ॥७॥

Aadi jugaadi anaahadi anadinu ghati ghati sabadu rajaaee he ||7||

From the very beginning, and throughout the ages, the unstruck sound current resounds, night and day; in each and every heart, the Word of the Shabad, echoes Your Will. ||7||


ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਅਮੋਲੋ ॥

आपे रतनु अनूपु अमोलो ॥

Aape ratanu anoopu amolo ||

You Yourself are the jewel, incomparably beautiful and priceless.

ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥

आपे परखे पूरा तोलो ॥

Aape parakhe pooraa tolo ||

You Yourself are the Assessor, the Perfect Weigher.

ਆਪੇ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਸਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਲੈ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

आपे किस ही कसि बखसे आपे दे लै भाई हे ॥८॥

Aape kis hee kasi bakhase aape de lai bhaaee he ||8||

You Yourself test and forgive. You Yourself give and take, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8||


ਆਪੇ ਧਨਖੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬਾਣਾ ॥

आपे धनखु आपे सरबाणा ॥

Aape dhanakhu aape sarabaa(nn)aa ||

He Himself is the bow, and He Himself is the archer.

ਆਪੇ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥

आपे सुघड़ु सरूपु सिआणा ॥

Aape sugha(rr)u saroopu siaa(nn)aa ||

He Himself is all-wise, beautiful and all-knowing.

ਕਹਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਣਤਾ ਸੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

कहता बकता सुणता सोई आपे बणत बणाई हे ॥९॥

Kahataa bakataa su(nn)ataa soee aape ba(nn)at ba(nn)aaee he ||9||

He is the speaker, the orator and the listener. He Himself made what is made. ||9||


ਪਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

पउणु गुरू पाणी पित जाता ॥

Pau(nn)u guroo paa(nn)ee pit jaataa ||

Air is the Guru, and water is known to be the father.

ਉਦਰ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਤਾ ॥

उदर संजोगी धरती माता ॥

Udar sanjjogee dharatee maataa ||

The womb of the great mother earth gives birth to all.

ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਜਗੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਖੇਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

रैणि दिनसु दुइ दाई दाइआ जगु खेलै खेलाई हे ॥१०॥

Rai(nn)i dinasu dui daaee daaiaa jagu khelai khelaaee he ||10||

Night and day are the two nurses, male and female; the world plays in this play. ||10||


ਆਪੇ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਲਾ ॥

आपे मछुली आपे जाला ॥

Aape machhulee aape jaalaa ||

You Yourself are the fish, and You Yourself are the net.

ਆਪੇ ਗਊ ਆਪੇ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥

आपे गऊ आपे रखवाला ॥

Aape gau aape rakhavaalaa ||

You Yourself are the cows, and You yourself are their keeper.

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

सरब जीआ जगि जोति तुमारी जैसी प्रभि फुरमाई हे ॥११॥

Sarab jeeaa jagi joti tumaaree jaisee prbhi phuramaaee he ||11||

Your Light fills all the beings of the world; they walk according to Your Command, O God. ||11||


ਆਪੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਆਪੇ ਭੋਗੀ ॥

आपे जोगी आपे भोगी ॥

Aape jogee aape bhogee ||

You Yourself are the Yogi, and You Yourself are the enjoyer.

ਆਪੇ ਰਸੀਆ ਪਰਮ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ॥

आपे रसीआ परम संजोगी ॥

Aape raseeaa param sanjjogee ||

You Yourself are the reveller; You form the supreme Union.

ਆਪੇ ਵੇਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

आपे वेबाणी निरंकारी निरभउ ताड़ी लाई हे ॥१२॥

Aape vebaa(nn)ee nirankkaaree nirabhau taa(rr)ee laaee he ||12||

You Yourself are speechless, formless and fearless, absorbed in the primal ecstasy of deep meditation. ||12||


ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥

खाणी बाणी तुझहि समाणी ॥

Khaa(nn)ee baa(nn)ee tujhahi samaa(nn)ee ||

The sources of creation and speech are contained within You, Lord.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥

जो दीसै सभ आवण जाणी ॥

Jo deesai sabh aava(nn) jaa(nn)ee ||

All that is seen, is coming and going.

ਸੇਈ ਸਾਹ ਸਚੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

सेई साह सचे वापारी सतिगुरि बूझ बुझाई हे ॥१३॥

Seee saah sache vaapaaree satiguri boojh bujhaaee he ||13||

They are the true bankers and traders, whom the True Guru has inspired to understand. ||13||


ਸਬਦੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

सबदु बुझाए सतिगुरु पूरा ॥

Sabadu bujhaae satiguru pooraa ||

The Word of the Shabad is understood through the Perfect True Guru.

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਪੂਰਾ ॥

सरब कला साचे भरपूरा ॥

Sarab kalaa saache bharapooraa ||

The True Lord is overflowing with all powers.

ਅਫਰਿਓ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਤੂ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

अफरिओ वेपरवाहु सदा तू ना तिसु तिलु न तमाई हे ॥१४॥

Aphario veparavaahu sadaa too naa tisu tilu na tamaaee he ||14||

You are beyond our grasp, and forever independent. You do not have even an iota of greed. ||14||


ਕਾਲੁ ਬਿਕਾਲੁ ਭਏ ਦੇਵਾਨੇ ॥

कालु बिकालु भए देवाने ॥

Kaalu bikaalu bhae devaane ||

Birth and death are meaningless, for those

ਸਬਦੁ ਸਹਜ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਾਨੇ ॥

सबदु सहज रसु अंतरि माने ॥

Sabadu sahaj rasu anttari maane ||

Who enjoy the sublime celestial essence of the Shabad within their minds.

ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਵਰਦਾਤਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

आपे मुकति त्रिपति वरदाता भगति भाइ मनि भाई हे ॥१५॥

Aape mukati tripati varadaataa bhagati bhaai mani bhaaee he ||15||

He Himself is the Giver of liberation, satisfaction and blessings, to those devotees who love Him in their minds. ||15||


ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਮ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥

आपि निरालमु गुर गम गिआना ॥

Aapi niraalamu gur gam giaanaa ||

He Himself is immaculate; by contact with the Guru, spiritual wisdom is obtained.

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥

जो दीसै तुझ माहि समाना ॥

Jo deesai tujh maahi samaanaa ||

Whatever is seen, shall merge into You.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥

नानकु नीचु भिखिआ दरि जाचै मै दीजै नामु वडाई हे ॥१६॥१॥

Naanaku neechu bhikhiaa dari jaachai mai deejai naamu vadaaee he ||16||1||

Nanak, the lowly, begs for charity at Your Door; please, bless him with the glorious greatness of Your Name. ||16||1||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਧਉਲੁ ਅਕਾਸੰ ॥

आपे धरती धउलु अकासं ॥

Aape dharatee dhaulu akaasann ||

He Himself is the earth, the mythical bull which supports it and the Akaashic ethers.

ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸੰ ॥

आपे साचे गुण परगासं ॥

Aape saache gu(nn) paragaasann ||

The True Lord Himself reveals His Glorious Virtues.

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

जती सती संतोखी आपे आपे कार कमाई हे ॥१॥

Jatee satee santtokhee aape aape kaar kamaaee he ||1||

He Himself is celibate, chaste and contented; He Himself is the Doer of deeds. ||1||


ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥

जिसु करणा सो करि करि वेखै ॥

Jisu kara(nn)aa so kari kari vekhai ||

He who created the creation, beholds what He has created.

ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਲੇਖੈ ॥

कोइ न मेटै साचे लेखै ॥

Koi na metai saache lekhai ||

No one can erase the Inscription of the True Lord.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

आपे करे कराए आपे आपे दे वडिआई हे ॥२॥

Aape kare karaae aape aape de vadiaaee he ||2||

He Himself is the Doer, the Cause of causes; He Himself is the One who bestows glorious greatness. ||2||


ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਚੰਚਲ ਚਿਤੁ ਚਾਲਹਿ ॥

पंच चोर चंचल चितु चालहि ॥

Pancch chor chancchal chitu chaalahi ||

The five thieves cause the fickle consciousness to waver.

ਪਰ ਘਰ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਲਹਿ ॥

पर घर जोहहि घरु नही भालहि ॥

Par ghar johahi gharu nahee bhaalahi ||

It looks into the homes of others, but does not search its own home.

ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਢਹੈ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

काइआ नगरु ढहै ढहि ढेरी बिनु सबदै पति जाई हे ॥३॥

Kaaiaa nagaru dhahai dhahi dheree binu sabadai pati jaaee he ||3||

The body-village crumbles into dust; without the Word of the Shabad, one's honor is lost. ||3||


ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥

गुर ते बूझै त्रिभवणु सूझै ॥

Gur te boojhai tribhava(nn)u soojhai ||

One who realizes the Lord through the Guru, comprehends the three worlds.

ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥

मनसा मारि मनै सिउ लूझै ॥

Manasaa maari manai siu loojhai ||

He subdues his desires, and struggles with his mind.

ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਤੁਧ ਹੀ ਜੇਹੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

जो तुधु सेवहि से तुध ही जेहे निरभउ बाल सखाई हे ॥४॥

Jo tudhu sevahi se tudh hee jehe nirabhau baal sakhaaee he ||4||

Those who serve You, become just like You; O Fearless Lord, You are their best friend from infancy. ||4||


ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥

आपे सुरगु मछु पइआला ॥

Aape suragu machhu paiaalaa ||

You Yourself are the heavenly realms, this world and the nether regions of the underworld.

ਆਪੇ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਬਾਲਾ ॥

आपे जोति सरूपी बाला ॥

Aape joti saroopee baalaa ||

You Yourself are the embodiment of light, forever young.

ਜਟਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

जटा बिकट बिकराल सरूपी रूपु न रेखिआ काई हे ॥५॥

Jataa bikat bikaraal saroopee roopu na rekhiaa kaaee he ||5||

With matted hair, and a horrible, dreadful form, still, You have no form or feature. ||5||


ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

बेद कतेबी भेदु न जाता ॥

Bed katebee bhedu na jaataa ||

The Vedas and the Bible do not know the mystery of God.

ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ॥

ना तिसु मात पिता सुत भ्राता ॥

Naa tisu maat pitaa sut bhraataa ||

He has no mother, father, child or brother.

ਸਗਲੇ ਸੈਲ ਉਪਾਇ ਸਮਾਏ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

सगले सैल उपाइ समाए अलखु न लखणा जाई हे ॥६॥

Sagale sail upaai samaae alakhu na lakha(nn)aa jaaee he ||6||

He created all the mountains, and levels them again; the Unseen Lord cannot be seen. ||6||


ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਮੀਤ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥

करि करि थाकी मीत घनेरे ॥

Kari kari thaakee meet ghanere ||

I have grown weary of making so many friends.

ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਾਟੈ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥

कोइ न काटै अवगुण मेरे ॥

Koi na kaatai avagu(nn) mere ||

No one can rid me of my sins and mistakes.

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

सुरि नर नाथु साहिबु सभना सिरि भाइ मिलै भउ जाई हे ॥७॥

Suri nar naathu saahibu sabhanaa siri bhaai milai bhau jaaee he ||7||

God is the Supreme Lord and Master of all the angels and mortal beings; blessed with His Love, their fear is dispelled. ||7||


ਭੂਲੇ ਚੂਕੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

भूले चूके मारगि पावहि ॥

Bhoole chooke maaragi paavahi ||

He puts back on the Path those who have wandered and strayed.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥

आपि भुलाइ तूहै समझावहि ॥

Aapi bhulaai toohai samajhaavahi ||

You Yourself make them stray, and You teach them again.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

बिनु नावै मै अवरु न दीसै नावहु गति मिति पाई हे ॥८॥

Binu naavai mai avaru na deesai naavahu gati miti paaee he ||8||

I cannot see anything except the Name. Through the Name comes salvation and merit. ||8||


ਗੰਗਾ ਜਮੁਨਾ ਕੇਲ ਕੇਦਾਰਾ ॥

गंगा जमुना केल केदारा ॥

Ganggaa jamunaa kel kedaaraa ||

The Ganges, the Jamunaa where Krishna played, Kaydar Naat'h,

ਕਾਸੀ ਕਾਂਤੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥

कासी कांती पुरी दुआरा ॥

Kaasee kaantee puree duaaraa ||

Benares, Kanchivaram, Puri, Dwaarkaa,

ਗੰਗਾ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਬੇਣੀ ਸੰਗਮੁ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

गंगा सागरु बेणी संगमु अठसठि अंकि समाई हे ॥९॥

Ganggaa saagaru be(nn)ee sanggamu athasathi ankki samaaee he ||9||

Ganga Saagar where the Ganges empties into the ocean, Trivaynee where the three rivers come together, and the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, are all merged in the Lord's Being. ||9||


ਆਪੇ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

आपे सिध साधिकु वीचारी ॥

Aape sidh saadhiku veechaaree ||

He Himself is the Siddha, the seeker, in meditative contemplation.

ਆਪੇ ਰਾਜਨੁ ਪੰਚਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥

आपे राजनु पंचा कारी ॥

Aape raajanu pancchaa kaaree ||

He Himself is the King and the Council.

ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਅਦਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

तखति बहै अदली प्रभु आपे भरमु भेदु भउ जाई हे ॥१०॥

Takhati bahai adalee prbhu aape bharamu bhedu bhau jaaee he ||10||

God Himself, the wise Judge, sits on the throne; He takes away doubt, duality and fear. ||10||


ਆਪੇ ਕਾਜੀ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਲਾ ॥

आपे काजी आपे मुला ॥

Aape kaajee aape mulaa ||

He Himself is the Qazi; He Himself is the Mullah.

ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਭੁਲਾ ॥

आपि अभुलु न कबहू भुला ॥

Aapi abhulu na kabahoo bhulaa ||

He Himself is infallible; He never makes mistakes.

ਆਪੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਕੋ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

आपे मिहर दइआपति दाता ना किसै को बैराई हे ॥११॥

Aape mihar daiaapati daataa naa kisai ko bairaaee he ||11||

He Himself is the Giver of Grace, compassion and honor; He is no one's enemy. ||11||


ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

जिसु बखसे तिसु दे वडिआई ॥

Jisu bakhase tisu de vadiaaee ||

Whoever He forgives, He blesses with glorious greatness.

ਸਭਸੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਈ ॥

सभसै दाता तिलु न तमाई ॥

Sabhasai daataa tilu na tamaaee ||

He is the Giver of all; He does not have even an iota of greed.

ਭਰਪੁਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

भरपुरि धारि रहिआ निहकेवलु गुपतु प्रगटु सभ ठाई हे ॥१२॥

Bharapuri dhaari rahiaa nihakevalu gupatu prgatu sabh thaaee he ||12||

The Immaculate Lord is all pervading, permeating everywhere, both hidden and manifest. ||12||


ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥

किआ सालाही अगम अपारै ॥

Kiaa saalaahee agam apaarai ||

How can I praise the inaccessible, infinite Lord?

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਮੁਰਾਰੈ ॥

साचे सिरजणहार मुरारै ॥

Saache siraja(nn)ahaar muraarai ||

The True Creator Lord is the Enemy of ego.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੇਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

जिस नो नदरि करे तिसु मेले मेलि मिलै मेलाई हे ॥१३॥

Jis no nadari kare tisu mele meli milai melaaee he ||13||

He unites those whom He blesses with His Grace; uniting them in His Union, they are united. ||13||


ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ॥

ब्रहमा बिसनु महेसु दुआरै ॥

Brhamaa bisanu mahesu duaarai ||

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva stand at His Door;

ਊਭੇ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥

ऊभे सेवहि अलख अपारै ॥

Ubhe sevahi alakh apaarai ||

They serve the unseen, infinite Lord.

ਹੋਰ ਕੇਤੀ ਦਰਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਦੀ ਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

होर केती दरि दीसै बिललादी मै गणत न आवै काई हे ॥१४॥

Hor ketee dari deesai bilalaadee mai ga(nn)at na aavai kaaee he ||14||

Millions of others can be seen crying at His door; I cannot even estimate their numbers. ||14||


ਸਾਚੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

साची कीरति साची बाणी ॥

Saachee keerati saachee baa(nn)ee ||

True is the Kirtan of His Praise, and True is the Word of His Bani.

ਹੋਰ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥

होर न दीसै बेद पुराणी ॥

Hor na deesai bed puraa(nn)ee ||

I can see no other in the Vedas and the Puraanas.

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਮੈ ਧਰ ਹੋਰ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

पूंजी साचु सचे गुण गावा मै धर होर न काई हे ॥१५॥

Poonjjee saachu sache gu(nn) gaavaa mai dhar hor na kaaee he ||15||

Truth is my capital; I sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. I have no other support at all. ||15||


ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ॥

जुगु जुगु साचा है भी होसी ॥

Jugu jugu saachaa hai bhee hosee ||

In each and every age, the True Lord is, and shall always be.

ਕਉਣੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਨ ਮਰਸੀ ॥

कउणु न मूआ कउणु न मरसी ॥

Kau(nn)u na mooaa kau(nn)u na marasee ||

Who has not died? Who shall not die?

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਦਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੨॥

नानकु नीचु कहै बेनंती दरि देखहु लिव लाई हे ॥१६॥२॥

Naanaku neechu kahai benanttee dari dekhahu liv laaee he ||16||2||

Nanak the lowly offers this prayer; see Him within your own self, and lovingly focus on the Lord. ||16||2||


ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

मारू महला १ ॥

Maaroo mahalaa 1 ||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਦੂਜੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਨੀ ਬੋਲੀ ॥

दूजी दुरमति अंनी बोली ॥

Doojee duramati annee bolee ||

In duality and evil-mindedness, the soul-bride is blind and deaf.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕੀ ਕਚੀ ਚੋਲੀ ॥

काम क्रोध की कची चोली ॥

Kaam krodh kee kachee cholee ||

She wears the dress of sexual desire and anger.

ਘਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਛੋਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

घरि वरु सहजु न जाणै छोहरि बिनु पिर नीद न पाई हे ॥१॥

Ghari varu sahaju na jaa(nn)ai chhohari binu pir need na paaee he ||1||

Her Husband Lord is within the home of her own heart, but she does not know Him; without her Husband Lord, she cannot go to sleep. ||1||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲੈ ਭੜਕਾਰੇ ॥

अंतरि अगनि जलै भड़कारे ॥

Anttari agani jalai bha(rr)akaare ||

The great fire of desire blazes within her.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਤਕੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

मनमुखु तके कुंडा चारे ॥

Manamukhu take kunddaa chaare ||

The self-willed manmukh looks around in the four directions.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਚੇ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

बिनु सतिगुर सेवे किउ सुखु पाईऐ साचे हाथि वडाई हे ॥२॥

Binu satigur seve kiu sukhu paaeeai saache haathi vadaaee he ||2||

Without serving the True Guru, how can she find peace? Glorious greatness rests in the hands of the True Lord. ||2||


ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥

कामु क्रोधु अहंकारु निवारे ॥

Kaamu krodhu ahankkaaru nivaare ||

Eradicating sexual desire, anger and egotism,

ਤਸਕਰ ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ॥

तसकर पंच सबदि संघारे ॥

Tasakar pancch sabadi sangghaare ||

She destroys the five thieves through the Word of the Shabad.

ਗਿਆਨ ਖੜਗੁ ਲੈ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

गिआन खड़गु लै मन सिउ लूझै मनसा मनहि समाई हे ॥३॥

Giaan kha(rr)agu lai man siu loojhai manasaa manahi samaaee he ||3||

Taking up the sword of spiritual wisdom, she struggles with her mind, and hope and desire are smoothed over in her mind. ||3||


ਮਾ ਕੀ ਰਕਤੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਬਿਦੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥

मा की रकतु पिता बिदु धारा ॥

Maa kee rakatu pitaa bidu dhaaraa ||

From the union of the mother's egg and the father's sperm,

ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਆਪਾਰਾ ॥

मूरति सूरति करि आपारा ॥

Moorati soorati kari aapaaraa ||

The form of infinite beauty has been created.

ਜੋਤਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਜੇਤੀ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭ ਠਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

जोति दाति जेती सभ तेरी तू करता सभ ठाई हे ॥४॥

Joti daati jetee sabh teree too karataa sabh thaaee he ||4||

The blessings of light all come from You; You are the Creator Lord, pervading everywhere. ||4||


ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਕੀਆ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

तुझ ही कीआ जमण मरणा ॥

Tujh hee keeaa jamma(nn) mara(nn)aa ||

You have created birth and death.

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਮਝ ਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਡਰਣਾ ॥

गुर ते समझ पड़ी किआ डरणा ॥

Gur te samajh pa(rr)ee kiaa dara(nn)aa ||

Why should anyone fear, if they come to understand through the Guru?

ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਸਰੀਰਹੁ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

तू दइआलु दइआ करि देखहि दुखु दरदु सरीरहु जाई हे ॥५॥

Too daiaalu daiaa kari dekhahi dukhu daradu sareerahu jaaee he ||5||

When You, O Merciful Lord, look with Your kindness, then pain and suffering leave the body. ||5||


ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਰਹੇ ਭਉ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

निज घरि बैसि रहे भउ खाइआ ॥

Nij ghari baisi rahe bhau khaaiaa ||

One who sits in the home of his own self, eats his own fears.

ਧਾਵਤ ਰਾਖੇ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥

धावत राखे ठाकि रहाइआ ॥

Dhaavat raakhe thaaki rahaaiaa ||

He quiets and holds his wandering mind still.

ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਾਸ ਹਰੇ ਸਰ ਸੁਭਰ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

कमल बिगास हरे सर सुभर आतम रामु सखाई हे ॥६॥

Kamal bigaas hare sar subhar aatam raamu sakhaaee he ||6||

His heart-lotus blossoms forth in the overflowing green pool, and the Lord of his soul becomes his companion and helper. ||6||


ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ॥

मरणु लिखाइ मंडल महि आए ॥

Mara(nn)u likhaai manddal mahi aae ||

With their death already ordained, mortals come into this world.

ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ਚਲਣਾ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥

किउ रहीऐ चलणा परथाए ॥

Kiu raheeai chala(nn)aa parathaae ||

How can they remain here? They have to go to the world beyond.

ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਚੇ ਅਮਰਾ ਪੁਰਿ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

सचा अमरु सचे अमरा पुरि सो सचु मिलै वडाई हे ॥७॥

Sachaa amaru sache amaraa puri so sachu milai vadaaee he ||7||

True is the Lord's Command; the true ones dwell in the eternal city. The True Lord blesses them with glorious greatness. ||7||


ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥

आपि उपाइआ जगतु सबाइआ ॥

Aapi upaaiaa jagatu sabaaiaa ||

He Himself created the whole world.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

जिनि सिरिआ तिनि धंधै लाइआ ॥

Jini siriaa tini dhanddhai laaiaa ||

The One who made it, assigns the tasks to it.

ਸਚੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

सचै ऊपरि अवर न दीसै साचे कीमति पाई हे ॥८॥

Sachai upari avar na deesai saache keemati paaee he ||8||

I cannot see any other above the True Lord. The True Lord does the appraisal. ||8||


ਐਥੈ ਗੋਇਲੜਾ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

ऐथै गोइलड़ा दिन चारे ॥

Aithai goila(rr)aa din chaare ||

In this green pasture, the mortal stays only a few days.

ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰੇ ॥

खेलु तमासा धुंधूकारे ॥

Khelu tamaasaa dhunddhookaare ||

He plays and frolics in utter darkness.

ਬਾਜੀ ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਜਿਉ ਨਿਸਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭਖਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

बाजी खेलि गए बाजीगर जिउ निसि सुपनै भखलाई हे ॥९॥

Baajee kheli gae baajeegar jiu nisi supanai bhakhalaaee he ||9||

The jugglers have staged their show, and left, like people mumbling in a dream. ||9||


ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਤਖਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

तिन कउ तखति मिली वडिआई ॥

Tin kau takhati milee vadiaaee ||

They alone are blessed with glorious greatness at the Lord's throne,

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥

निरभउ मनि वसिआ लिव लाई ॥

Nirabhau mani vasiaa liv laaee ||

Who enshrine the fearless Lord in their minds, and lovingly center themselves on Him.

ਖੰਡੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੀ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਪੁਰੀਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

खंडी ब्रहमंडी पाताली पुरीई त्रिभवण ताड़ी लाई हे ॥१०॥

Khanddee brhamanddee paataalee pureeee tribhava(nn) taa(rr)ee laaee he ||10||

In the galaxies and solar systems, nether regions, celestial realms and the three worlds, the Lord is in the primal void of deep absorption. ||10||


ਸਾਚੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਤਖਤੁ ਸਚਾਵਾ ॥

साची नगरी तखतु सचावा ॥

Saachee nagaree takhatu sachaavaa ||

True is the village, and true is the throne,

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

गुरमुखि साचु मिलै सुखु पावा ॥

Guramukhi saachu milai sukhu paavaa ||

Of those Gurmukhs who meet with the True Lord, and find peace.

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਗਵਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

साचे साचै तखति वडाई हउमै गणत गवाई हे ॥११॥

Saache saachai takhati vadaaee haumai ga(nn)at gavaaee he ||11||

In Truth, seated upon the true throne, they are blessed with glorious greatness; their egotism is eradicated, along with the calculation of their account. ||11||


ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਐ ਸਹਸਾ ਜੀਐ ॥

गणत गणीऐ सहसा जीऐ ॥

Ga(nn)at ga(nn)eeai sahasaa jeeai ||

Calculating its account, the soul becomes anxious.

ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੂਐ ਤੀਐ ॥

किउ सुखु पावै दूऐ तीऐ ॥

Kiu sukhu paavai dooai teeai ||

How can one find peace, through duality and the three gunas - the three qualities?

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

निरमलु एकु निरंजनु दाता गुर पूरे ते पति पाई हे ॥१२॥

Niramalu eku niranjjanu daataa gur poore te pati paaee he ||12||

The One Lord is immaculate and formless, the Great Giver; through the Perfect Guru, honor is obtained. ||12||


ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥

जुगि जुगि विरली गुरमुखि जाता ॥

Jugi jugi viralee guramukhi jaataa ||

In each and every age, very rare are those who, as Gurmukh, realize the Lord.

ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥

साचा रवि रहिआ मनु राता ॥

Saachaa ravi rahiaa manu raataa ||

Their minds are imbued with the True, all-pervading Lord.

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

तिस की ओट गही सुखु पाइआ मनि तनि मैलु न काई हे ॥१३॥

Tis kee ot gahee sukhu paaiaa mani tani mailu na kaaee he ||13||

Seeking His Shelter, they find peace, and their minds and bodies are not stained with filth. ||13||


ਜੀਭ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

जीभ रसाइणि साचै राती ॥

Jeebh rasaai(nn)i saachai raatee ||

Their tongues are imbued with the True Lord, the source of nectar;

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਉ ਨ ਭਰਾਤੀ ॥

हरि प्रभु संगी भउ न भराती ॥

Hari prbhu sanggee bhau na bharaatee ||

Abiding with the Lord God, they have no fear or doubt.

ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਸ੍ਰੋਤ ਰਜੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

स्रवण स्रोत रजे गुरबाणी जोती जोति मिलाई हे ॥१४॥

Srva(nn) srot raje gurabaa(nn)ee jotee joti milaaee he ||14||

Hearing the Word of the Guru's Bani, their ears are satisfied, and their light merges into the Light. ||14||


ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪੈਰ ਧਰੇ ਪਉ ਧਰਣਾ ॥

रखि रखि पैर धरे पउ धरणा ॥

Rakhi rakhi pair dhare pau dhara(nn)aa ||

Carefully, carefully, I place my feet upon the ground.

ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥

जत कत देखउ तेरी सरणा ॥

Jat kat dekhau teree sara(nn)aa ||

Wherever I go, I behold Your Sanctuary.

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

दुखु सुखु देहि तूहै मनि भावहि तुझ ही सिउ बणि आई हे ॥१५॥

Dukhu sukhu dehi toohai mani bhaavahi tujh hee siu ba(nn)i aaee he ||15||

Whether You grant me pain or pleasure, You are pleasing to my mind. I am in harmony with You. ||15||


ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

अंत कालि को बेली नाही ॥

Antt kaali ko belee naahee ||

No one is anyone's companion or helper at the very last moment;

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥

गुरमुखि जाता तुधु सालाही ॥

Guramukhi jaataa tudhu saalaahee ||

As Gurmukh, I realize You and praise You.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੩॥

नानक नामि रते बैरागी निज घरि ताड़ी लाई हे ॥१६॥३॥

Naanak naami rate bairaagee nij ghari taa(rr)ee laaee he ||16||3||

O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, I am detached; in the home of my own self deep within, I am absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||16||3||


ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo mahalaa 1 ||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥

आदि जुगादी अपर अपारे ॥

Aadi jugaadee apar apaare ||

From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You are infinite and incomparable.

ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

आदि निरंजन खसम हमारे ॥

Aadi niranjjan khasam hamaare ||

You are my primal, immaculate Lord and Master.

ਸਾਚੇ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

साचे जोग जुगति वीचारी साचे ताड़ी लाई हे ॥१॥

Saache jog jugati veechaaree saache taa(rr)ee laaee he ||1||

I contemplate the Way of Yoga, the Way of Union with the True Lord. I am truly absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||1||


ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਜੁਗ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰੈ ॥

केतड़िआ जुग धुंधूकारै ॥

Keta(rr)iaa jug dhunddhookaarai ||

For so many ages, there was only pitch darkness;

ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੈ ॥

ताड़ी लाई सिरजणहारै ॥

Taa(rr)ee laaee siraja(nn)ahaarai ||

The Creator Lord was absorbed in the primal void.

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

सचु नामु सची वडिआई साचै तखति वडाई हे ॥२॥

Sachu naamu sachee vadiaaee saachai takhati vadaaee he ||2||

There was the True Name, the glorious greatness of the Truth, and the glory of His true throne. ||2||


ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥

सतजुगि सतु संतोखु सरीरा ॥

Satajugi satu santtokhu sareeraa ||

In the Golden Age of Truth, Truth and contentment filled the bodies.

ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥

सति सति वरतै गहिर ग्मभीरा ॥

Sati sati varatai gahir gambbheeraa ||

Truth was pervasive, Truth, deep, profound and unfathomable.

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਖੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

सचा साहिबु सचु परखै साचै हुकमि चलाई हे ॥३॥

Sachaa saahibu sachu parakhai saachai hukami chalaaee he ||3||

The True Lord appraises the mortals on the Touchstone of Truth, and issues His True Command. ||3||


ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

सत संतोखी सतिगुरु पूरा ॥

Sat santtokhee satiguru pooraa ||

The Perfect True Guru is true and contented.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨੇ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

गुर का सबदु मने सो सूरा ॥

Gur kaa sabadu mane so sooraa ||

He alone is a spiritual hero, who believes in the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

साची दरगह साचु निवासा मानै हुकमु रजाई हे ॥४॥

Saachee daragah saachu nivaasaa maanai hukamu rajaaee he ||4||

He alone obtains a true seat in the True Court of the Lord, who surrenders to the Command of the Commander. ||4||


ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

सतजुगि साचु कहै सभु कोई ॥

Satajugi saachu kahai sabhu koee ||

In the Golden Age of Truth, everyone spoke the Truth.

ਸਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

सचि वरतै साचा सोई ॥

Sachi varatai saachaa soee ||

Truth was pervasive - the Lord was Truth.

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

मनि मुखि साचु भरम भउ भंजनु गुरमुखि साचु सखाई हे ॥५॥

Mani mukhi saachu bharam bhau bhanjjanu guramukhi saachu sakhaaee he ||5||

With Truth in their minds and mouths, mortals were rid of doubt and fear. Truth was the friend of the Gurmukhs. ||5||


ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਧਰਮ ਕਲਾ ਇਕ ਚੂਕੀ ॥

त्रेतै धरम कला इक चूकी ॥

Tretai dharam kalaa ik chookee ||

In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yoga, one power of Dharma was lost.

ਤੀਨਿ ਚਰਣ ਇਕ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਸੂਕੀ ॥

तीनि चरण इक दुबिधा सूकी ॥

Teeni chara(nn) ik dubidhaa sookee ||

Three feet remained; through duality, one was cut off.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਅਵਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

गुरमुखि होवै सु साचु वखाणै मनमुखि पचै अवाई हे ॥६॥

Guramukhi hovai su saachu vakhaa(nn)ai manamukhi pachai avaaee he ||6||

Those who were Gurmukh spoke the Truth, while the self-willed manmukhs wasted away in vain. ||6||


ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੀਝੈ ॥

मनमुखि कदे न दरगह सीझै ॥

Manamukhi kade na daragah seejhai ||

The manmukh never succeeds in the Court of the Lord.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਰੀਝੈ ॥

बिनु सबदै किउ अंतरु रीझै ॥

Binu sabadai kiu anttaru reejhai ||

Without the Word of the Shabad, how can one be pleased within?

ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

बाधे आवहि बाधे जावहि सोझी बूझ न काई हे ॥७॥

Baadhe aavahi baadhe jaavahi sojhee boojh na kaaee he ||7||

In bondage they come, and in bondage they go; they understand and comprehend nothing. ||7||


ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਅਧੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

दइआ दुआपुरि अधी होई ॥

Daiaa duaapuri adhee hoee ||

In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, compassion was cut in half.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

गुरमुखि विरला चीनै कोई ॥

Guramukhi viralaa cheenai koee ||

Only a few, as Gurmukh, remembered the Lord.

ਦੁਇ ਪਗ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਰੇ ਧਰਣੀਧਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਿਥਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

दुइ पग धरमु धरे धरणीधर गुरमुखि साचु तिथाई हे ॥८॥

Dui pag dharamu dhare dhara(nn)eedhar guramukhi saachu tithaaee he ||8||

Dharmic faith, which upholds and supports the earth, had only two feet; Truth was revealed to the Gurmukhs. ||8||


ਰਾਜੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥

राजे धरमु करहि परथाए ॥

Raaje dharamu karahi parathaae ||

The kings acted righteously only out of self-interest.

ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਾਏ ॥

आसा बंधे दानु कराए ॥

Aasaa banddhe daanu karaae ||

Tied to hopes of reward, they gave to charities.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

राम नाम बिनु मुकति न होई थाके करम कमाई हे ॥९॥

Raam naam binu mukati na hoee thaake karam kamaaee he ||9||

Without the Lord's Name, liberation did not come, although they grew weary of performing rituals. ||9||


ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੰਗਾਹੀ ॥

करम धरम करि मुकति मंगाही ॥

Karam dharam kari mukati manggaahee ||

Practicing religious rituals, they sought liberation,

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥

मुकति पदारथु सबदि सलाही ॥

Mukati padaarathu sabadi salaahee ||

But the treasure of liberation comes only by praising the Shabad.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

बिनु गुर सबदै मुकति न होई परपंचु करि भरमाई हे ॥१०॥

Binu gur sabadai mukati na hoee parapancchu kari bharamaaee he ||10||

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, liberation is not obtained; practicing hypocrisy, they wander around confused. ||10||


ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

माइआ ममता छोडी न जाई ॥

Maaiaa mamataa chhodee na jaaee ||

Love and attachment to Maya cannot be abandoned.

ਸੇ ਛੂਟੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥

से छूटे सचु कार कमाई ॥

Se chhoote sachu kaar kamaaee ||

They alone find release, who practice deeds of Truth.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

अहिनिसि भगति रते वीचारी ठाकुर सिउ बणि आई हे ॥११॥

Ahinisi bhagati rate veechaaree thaakur siu ba(nn)i aaee he ||11||

Day and night, the devotees remain imbued with contemplative meditation; they become just like their Lord and Master. ||11||


ਇਕਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥

इकि जप तप करि करि तीरथ नावहि ॥

Iki jap tap kari kari teerath naavahi ||

Some chant and practice intensive meditation, and take cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage.

ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ॥

जिउ तुधु भावै तिवै चलावहि ॥

Jiu tudhu bhaavai tivai chalaavahi ||

They walk as You will them to walk.

ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਪਤੀਜੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

हठि निग्रहि अपतीजु न भीजै बिनु हरि गुर किनि पति पाई हे ॥१२॥

Hathi nigrhi apateeju na bheejai binu hari gur kini pati paaee he ||12||

By stubborn rituals of self-suppression, the Lord is not pleased. No one has ever obtained honor, without the Lord, without the Guru. ||12||


ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ ॥

कली काल महि इक कल राखी ॥

Kalee kaal mahi ik kal raakhee ||

In the Iron Age, the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, only one power remains.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥

बिनु गुर पूरे किनै न भाखी ॥

Binu gur poore kinai na bhaakhee ||

Without the Perfect Guru, no one has even described it.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

मनमुखि कूड़ु वरतै वरतारा बिनु सतिगुर भरमु न जाई हे ॥१३॥

Manamukhi koo(rr)u varatai varataaraa binu satigur bharamu na jaaee he ||13||

The self-willed manmukhs have staged the show of falsehood. Without the True Guru, doubt does not depart. ||13||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ॥

सतिगुरु वेपरवाहु सिरंदा ॥

Satiguru veparavaahu siranddaa ||

The True Guru is the Creator Lord, independent and carefree.

ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਛੰਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ॥

ना जम काणि न छंदा बंदा ॥

Naa jam kaa(nn)i na chhanddaa banddaa ||

He does not fear death, and He is not dependent on mortal men.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

जो तिसु सेवे सो अबिनासी ना तिसु कालु संताई हे ॥१४॥

Jo tisu seve so abinaasee naa tisu kaalu santtaaee he ||14||

Whoever serves Him becomes immortal and imperishable, and will not be tortured by death. ||14||


ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥

गुर महि आपु रखिआ करतारे ॥

Gur mahi aapu rakhiaa karataare ||

The Creator Lord has enshrined Himself within the Guru.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥

गुरमुखि कोटि असंख उधारे ॥

Guramukhi koti asankkh udhaare ||

The Gurmukh saves countless millions.

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

सरब जीआ जगजीवनु दाता निरभउ मैलु न काई हे ॥१५॥

Sarab jeeaa jagajeevanu daataa nirabhau mailu na kaaee he ||15||

The Life of the World is the Great Giver of all beings. The Fearless Lord has no filth at all. ||15||


ਸਗਲੇ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥

सगले जाचहि गुर भंडारी ॥

Sagale jaachahi gur bhanddaaree ||

Everyone begs from the Guru, God's Treasurer.

ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥

आपि निरंजनु अलख अपारी ॥

Aapi niranjjanu alakh apaaree ||

He Himself is the immaculate, unknowable, infinite Lord.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੪॥

नानकु साचु कहै प्रभ जाचै मै दीजै साचु रजाई हे ॥१६॥४॥

Naanaku saachu kahai prbh jaachai mai deejai saachu rajaaee he ||16||4||

Nanak speaks the Truth; he begs from God. Please bless me with the Truth, by Your Will. ||16||4||


ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

मारू महला १ ॥

Maaroo mahalaa 1 ||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਸਾਚੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

साचै मेले सबदि मिलाए ॥

Saachai mele sabadi milaae ||

The True Lord unites with those who are united with the Word of the Shabad.

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥

जा तिसु भाणा सहजि समाए ॥

Jaa tisu bhaa(nn)aa sahaji samaae ||

When it pleases Him, we intuitively merge with Him.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

त्रिभवण जोति धरी परमेसरि अवरु न दूजा भाई हे ॥१॥

Tribhava(nn) joti dharee paramesari avaru na doojaa bhaaee he ||1||

The Light of the Transcendent Lord pervades the three worlds; there is no other at all, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||


ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥

जिस के चाकर तिस की सेवा ॥

Jis ke chaakar tis kee sevaa ||

I am His servant; I serve Him.

ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥

सबदि पतीजै अलख अभेवा ॥

Sabadi pateejai alakh abhevaa ||

He is unknowable and mysterious; He is pleased by the Shabad.

ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

भगता का गुणकारी करता बखसि लए वडिआई हे ॥२॥

Bhagataa kaa gu(nn)akaaree karataa bakhasi lae vadiaaee he ||2||

The Creator is the Benefactor of His devotees. He forgives them - such is His greatness. ||2||


ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥

देदे तोटि न आवै साचे ॥

Dede toti na aavai saache ||

The True Lord gives and gives; His blessings never run short.

ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਉਦੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥

लै लै मुकरि पउदे काचे ॥

Lai lai mukari paude kaache ||

The false ones receive, and then deny having received.

ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨ ਰੀਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

मूलु न बूझहि साचि न रीझहि दूजै भरमि भुलाई हे ॥३॥

Moolu na boojhahi saachi na reejhahi doojai bharami bhulaaee he ||3||

They do not understand their origins, they are not pleased with the Truth, and so they wander in duality and doubt. ||3||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

गुरमुखि जागि रहे दिन राती ॥

Guramukhi jaagi rahe din raatee ||

The Gurmukhs remain awake and aware, day and night.

ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥

साचे की लिव गुरमति जाती ॥

Saache kee liv guramati jaatee ||

Following the Guru's Teachings, they know the Love of the True Lord.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਸੇ ਲੂਟੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

मनमुख सोइ रहे से लूटे गुरमुखि साबतु भाई हे ॥४॥

Manamukh soi rahe se loote guramukhi saabatu bhaaee he ||4||

The self-willed manmukhs remain asleep, and are plundered. The Gurmukhs remain safe and sound, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||


ਕੂੜੇ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

कूड़े आवै कूड़े जावै ॥

Koo(rr)e aavai koo(rr)e jaavai ||

The false come, and the false go;

ਕੂੜੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

कूड़े राती कूड़ु कमावै ॥

Koo(rr)e raatee koo(rr)u kamaavai ||

Imbued with falsehood, they practice only falsehood.

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

सबदि मिले से दरगह पैधे गुरमुखि सुरति समाई हे ॥५॥

Sabadi mile se daragah paidhe guramukhi surati samaaee he ||5||

Those who are imbued with the Shabad are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord; the Gurmukhs focus their consciousness on Him. ||5||


ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਠਗੀ ਠਗਵਾੜੀ ॥

कूड़ि मुठी ठगी ठगवाड़ी ॥

Koo(rr)i muthee thagee thagavaa(rr)ee ||

The false are cheated, and robbed by the robbers.

ਜਿਉ ਵਾੜੀ ਓਜਾੜਿ ਉਜਾੜੀ ॥

जिउ वाड़ी ओजाड़ि उजाड़ी ॥

Jiu vaa(rr)ee ojaa(rr)i ujaa(rr)ee ||

The garden is laid waste, like the rough wilderness.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਦਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

नाम बिना किछु सादि न लागै हरि बिसरिऐ दुखु पाई हे ॥६॥

Naam binaa kichhu saadi na laagai hari bisariai dukhu paaee he ||6||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, nothing tastes sweet; forgetting the Lord, they suffer in sorrow. ||6||


ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਘਾਈ ॥

भोजनु साचु मिलै आघाई ॥

Bhojanu saachu milai aaghaaee ||

Receiving the food of Truth, one is satisfied.

ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

नाम रतनु साची वडिआई ॥

Naam ratanu saachee vadiaaee ||

True is the glorious greatness of the jewel of the Name.

ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

चीनै आपु पछाणै सोई जोती जोति मिलाई हे ॥७॥

Cheenai aapu pachhaa(nn)ai soee jotee joti milaaee he ||7||

One who understands his own self, realizes the Lord. His light merges into the Light. ||7||


ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲੀ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਏ ॥

नावहु भुली चोटा खाए ॥

Naavahu bhulee chotaa khaae ||

Wandering from the Name, he endures beatings.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥

बहुतु सिआणप भरमु न जाए ॥

Bahutu siaa(nn)ap bharamu na jaae ||

Even great cleverness does not dispel doubt.

ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

पचि पचि मुए अचेत न चेतहि अजगरि भारि लदाई हे ॥८॥

Pachi pachi mue achet na chetahi ajagari bhaari ladaaee he ||8||

The unconscious fool does not remain conscious of the Lord; he putrefies and rots away to death, carrying his heavy load of sin. ||8||


ਬਿਨੁ ਬਾਦ ਬਿਰੋਧਹਿ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

बिनु बाद बिरोधहि कोई नाही ॥

Binu baad birodhahi koee naahee ||

No one is free of conflict and strife.

ਮੈ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਹੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥

मै देखालिहु तिसु सालाही ॥

Mai dekhaalihu tisu saalaahee ||

Show me anyone who is, and I will praise him.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

मनु तनु अरपि मिलै जगजीवनु हरि सिउ बणत बणाई हे ॥९॥

Manu tanu arapi milai jagajeevanu hari siu ba(nn)at ba(nn)aaee he ||9||

Dedicating mind and body to God, one meets the Lord, the Life of the World, and becomes just like Him. ||9||


ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

प्रभ की गति मिति कोइ न पावै ॥

Prbh kee gati miti koi na paavai ||

No one knows the state and extent of God.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਵਡਾ ਕਹਾਇ ਵਡਾਈ ਖਾਵੈ ॥

जे को वडा कहाइ वडाई खावै ॥

Je ko vadaa kahaai vadaaee khaavai ||

Whoever calls himself great, will be eaten by his greatness.

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਦਾਤੀ ਸਗਲੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

साचे साहिब तोटि न दाती सगली तिनहि उपाई हे ॥१०॥

Saache saahib toti na daatee sagalee tinahi upaaee he ||10||

There is no lack of gifts of our True Lord and Master. He created all. ||10||


ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥

वडी वडिआई वेपरवाहे ॥

Vadee vadiaaee veparavaahe ||

Great is the glorious greatness of the independent Lord.

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ॥

आपि उपाए दानु समाहे ॥

Aapi upaae daanu samaahe ||

He Himself created, and gives sustenance to all.

ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

आपि दइआलु दूरि नही दाता मिलिआ सहजि रजाई हे ॥११॥

Aapi daiaalu doori nahee daataa miliaa sahaji rajaaee he ||11||

The Merciful Lord is not far away; the Great Giver spontaneously unites with Himself, by His Will. ||11||


ਇਕਿ ਸੋਗੀ ਇਕਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥

इकि सोगी इकि रोगि विआपे ॥

Iki sogee iki rogi viaape ||

Some are sad, and some are afflicted with disease.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥

जो किछु करे सु आपे आपे ॥

Jo kichhu kare su aape aape ||

Whatever God does, He does by Himself.

ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਲਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

भगति भाउ गुर की मति पूरी अनहदि सबदि लखाई हे ॥१२॥

Bhagati bhaau gur kee mati pooree anahadi sabadi lakhaaee he ||12||

Through loving devotion, and the Perfect Teachings of the Guru, the unstruck sound current of the Shabad is realized. ||12||


ਇਕਿ ਨਾਗੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭਵਹਿ ਭਵਾਏ ॥

इकि नागे भूखे भवहि भवाए ॥

Iki naage bhookhe bhavahi bhavaae ||

Some wander and roam around, hungry and naked.

ਇਕਿ ਹਠੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਨ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

इकि हठु करि मरहि न कीमति पाए ॥

Iki hathu kari marahi na keemati paae ||

Some act in stubbornness and die, but do not know the value of God.

ਗਤਿ ਅਵਿਗਤ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

गति अविगत की सार न जाणै बूझै सबदु कमाई हे ॥१३॥

Gati avigat kee saar na jaa(nn)ai boojhai sabadu kamaaee he ||13||

They do not know the difference between good and bad; this is understood only through the practice of the Word of the Shabad. ||13||


ਇਕਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਹਿ ॥

इकि तीरथि नावहि अंनु न खावहि ॥

Iki teerathi naavahi annu na khaavahi ||

Some bathe at sacred shrines and refuse to eat.

ਇਕਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਜਲਾਵਹਿ ਦੇਹ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ॥

इकि अगनि जलावहि देह खपावहि ॥

Iki agani jalaavahi deh khapaavahi ||

Some torment their bodies in burning fire.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

राम नाम बिनु मुकति न होई कितु बिधि पारि लंघाई हे ॥१४॥

Raam naam binu mukati na hoee kitu bidhi paari langghaaee he ||14||

Without the Lord's Name, liberation is not obtained; how can anyone cross over? ||14||


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਈ ॥

गुरमति छोडहि उझड़ि जाई ॥

Guramati chhodahi ujha(rr)i jaaee ||

Abandoning the Guru's Teachings, some wander in the wilderness.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਾਈ ॥

मनमुखि रामु न जपै अवाई ॥

Manamukhi raamu na japai avaaee ||

The self-willed manmukhs are destitute; they do not meditate on the Lord.

ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਕੂੜਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਬੈਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

पचि पचि बूडहि कूड़ु कमावहि कूड़ि कालु बैराई हे ॥१५॥

Pachi pachi boodahi koo(rr)u kamaavahi koo(rr)i kaalu bairaaee he ||15||

They are ruined, destroyed and drowned from practicing falsehood; death is the enemy of the false. ||15||


ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

हुकमे आवै हुकमे जावै ॥

Hukame aavai hukame jaavai ||

By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, they come, and by the Hukam of His Command, they go.

ਬੂਝੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

बूझै हुकमु सो साचि समावै ॥

Boojhai hukamu so saachi samaavai ||

One who realizes His Hukam, merges in the True Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੫॥

नानक साचु मिलै मनि भावै गुरमुखि कार कमाई हे ॥१६॥५॥

Naanak saachu milai mani bhaavai guramukhi kaar kamaaee he ||16||5||

O Nanak, he merges in the True Lord, and his mind is pleased with the Lord. The Gurmukhs do His work. ||16||5||


ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

मारू महला १ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥

आपे करता पुरखु बिधाता ॥

Aape karataa purakhu bidhaataa ||

He Himself is the Creator Lord, the Architect of Destiny.

ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥

जिनि आपे आपि उपाइ पछाता ॥

Jini aape aapi upaai pachhaataa ||

He evaluates those whom He Himself has created.

ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

आपे सतिगुरु आपे सेवकु आपे स्रिसटि उपाई हे ॥१॥

Aape satiguru aape sevaku aape srisati upaaee he ||1||

He Himself is the True Guru, and He Himself is the servant; He Himself created the Universe. ||1||


ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਰੇ ॥

आपे नेड़ै नाही दूरे ॥

Aape ne(rr)ai naahee doore ||

He is near at hand, not far away.

ਬੂਝਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ॥

बूझहि गुरमुखि से जन पूरे ॥

Boojhahi guramukhi se jan poore ||

The Gurmukhs understand Him; perfect are those humble beings.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਏਹ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

तिन की संगति अहिनिसि लाहा गुर संगति एह वडाई हे ॥२॥

Tin kee sanggati ahinisi laahaa gur sanggati eh vadaaee he ||2||

Associating with them night and day is profitable. This is the glorious greatness of associating with the Guru. ||2||


ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥

जुगि जुगि संत भले प्रभ तेरे ॥

Jugi jugi santt bhale prbh tere ||

Throughout the ages, Your Saints are holy and sublime, O God.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸੇਰੇ ॥

हरि गुण गावहि रसन रसेरे ॥

Hari gu(nn) gaavahi rasan rasere ||

They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, savoring it with their tongues.

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਜਿਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

उसतति करहि परहरि दुखु दालदु जिन नाही चिंत पराई हे ॥३॥

Usatati karahi parahari dukhu daaladu jin naahee chintt paraaee he ||3||

They chant His Praises, and their pain and poverty are taken away; they are not afraid of anyone else. ||3||


ਓਇ ਜਾਗਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੂਤੇ ਦੀਸਹਿ ॥

ओइ जागत रहहि न सूते दीसहि ॥

Oi jaagat rahahi na soote deesahi ||

They remain awake and aware, and do not appear to sleep.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਸਹਿ ॥

संगति कुल तारे साचु परीसहि ॥

Sanggati kul taare saachu pareesahi ||

They serve up Truth, and so save their companions and relatives.

ਕਲਿਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਓਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

कलिमल मैलु नाही ते निरमल ओइ रहहि भगति लिव लाई हे ॥४॥

Kalimal mailu naahee te niramal oi rahahi bhagati liv laaee he ||4||

They are not stained with the filth of sins; they are immaculate and pure, and remain absorbed in loving devotional worship. ||4||


ਬੂਝਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

बूझहु हरि जन सतिगुर बाणी ॥

Boojhahu hari jan satigur baa(nn)ee ||

O humble servants of the Lord, understand the Word of the Guru's Bani.

ਏਹੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਸਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਦੇਹ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ॥

एहु जोबनु सासु है देह पुराणी ॥

Ehu jobanu saasu hai deh puraa(nn)ee ||

This youth, breath and body shall pass away.

ਆਜੁ ਕਾਲਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

आजु कालि मरि जाईऐ प्राणी हरि जपु जपि रिदै धिआई हे ॥५॥

Aaju kaali mari jaaeeai praa(nn)ee hari japu japi ridai dhiaaee he ||5||

O mortal, you shall die today or tomorrow; chant, and meditate on the Lord within your heart. ||5||


ਛੋਡਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕੂੜ ਕਬਾੜਾ ॥

छोडहु प्राणी कूड़ कबाड़ा ॥

Chhodahu praa(nn)ee koo(rr) kabaa(rr)aa ||

O mortal, abandon falsehood and your worthless ways.

ਕੂੜੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਾਲੁ ਉਛਾਹਾੜਾ ॥

कूड़ु मारे कालु उछाहाड़ा ॥

Koo(rr)u maare kaalu uchhaahaa(rr)aa ||

Death viciously kills the false beings.

ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਹੁ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

साकत कूड़ि पचहि मनि हउमै दुहु मारगि पचै पचाई हे ॥६॥

Saakat koo(rr)i pachahi mani haumai duhu maaragi pachai pachaaee he ||6||

The faithless cynic is ruined through falsehood and his egotistical mind.On the path of duality, he rots away and decomposes. ||6||


ਛੋਡਿਹੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਈ ॥

छोडिहु निंदा ताति पराई ॥

Chhodihu ninddaa taati paraaee ||

Abandon slander and envy of others.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥

पड़ि पड़ि दझहि साति न आई ॥

Pa(rr)i pa(rr)i dajhahi saati na aaee ||

Reading and studying, they burn, and do not find tranquility.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਹੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

मिलि सतसंगति नामु सलाहहु आतम रामु सखाई हे ॥७॥

Mili satasanggati naamu salaahahu aatam raamu sakhaaee he ||7||

Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord, the Supreme Soul, shall be your helper and companion. ||7||


ਛੋਡਹੁ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥

छोडहु काम क्रोधु बुरिआई ॥

Chhodahu kaam krodhu buriaaee ||

Abandon sexual desire, anger and wickedness.

ਹਉਮੈ ਧੰਧੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਲੰਪਟਾਈ ॥

हउमै धंधु छोडहु ल्मपटाई ॥

Haumai dhanddhu chhodahu lamppataaee ||

Abandon your involvement in egotistical affairs and conflicts.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਰਹੁ ਤਾ ਉਬਰਹੁ ਇਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

सतिगुर सरणि परहु ता उबरहु इउ तरीऐ भवजलु भाई हे ॥८॥

Satigur sara(nn)i parahu taa ubarahu iu tareeai bhavajalu bhaaee he ||8||

If you seek the Sanctuary of the True Guru, then you shall be saved. In this way you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8||


ਆਗੈ ਬਿਮਲ ਨਦੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਝੇਲਾ ॥

आगै बिमल नदी अगनि बिखु झेला ॥

Aagai bimal nadee agani bikhu jhelaa ||

In the hereafter, you shall have to cross over the fiery river of poisonous flames.

ਤਿਥੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥

तिथै अवरु न कोई जीउ इकेला ॥

Tithai avaru na koee jeeu ikelaa ||

No one else will be there; your soul shall be all alone.

ਭੜ ਭੜ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੇ ਲਹਰੀ ਪੜਿ ਦਝਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

भड़ भड़ अगनि सागरु दे लहरी पड़ि दझहि मनमुख ताई हे ॥९॥

Bha(rr) bha(rr) agani saagaru de laharee pa(rr)i dajhahi manamukh taaee he ||9||

The ocean of fire spits out waves of searing flames; the self-willed manmukhs fall into it, and are roasted there. ||9||


ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੈ ॥

गुर पहि मुकति दानु दे भाणै ॥

Gur pahi mukati daanu de bhaa(nn)ai ||

Liberation comes from the Guru; He grants this blessing by the Pleasure of His Will.

ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

जिनि पाइआ सोई बिधि जाणै ॥

Jini paaiaa soee bidhi jaa(nn)ai ||

He alone knows the way, who obtains it.

ਜਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

जिन पाइआ तिन पूछहु भाई सुखु सतिगुर सेव कमाई हे ॥१०॥

Jin paaiaa tin poochhahu bhaaee sukhu satigur sev kamaaee he ||10||

So ask one who has obtained it, O Siblings of Destiny. Serve the True Guru, and find peace. ||10||


ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਬੇਕਾਰਾ ॥

गुर बिनु उरझि मरहि बेकारा ॥

Gur binu urajhi marahi bekaaraa ||

Without the Guru, he dies entangled in sin and corruption.

ਜਮੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥

जमु सिरि मारे करे खुआरा ॥

Jamu siri maare kare khuaaraa ||

The Messenger of Death smashes his head and humiliates him.

ਬਾਧੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੂਬਹਿ ਨਿੰਦ ਪਰਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

बाधे मुकति नाही नर निंदक डूबहि निंद पराई हे ॥११॥

Baadhe mukati naahee nar ninddak doobahi nindd paraaee he ||11||

The slanderous person is not freed of his bonds; he is drowned, slandering others. ||11||


ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥

बोलहु साचु पछाणहु अंदरि ॥

Bolahu saachu pachhaa(nn)ahu anddari ||

So speak the Truth, and realize the Lord deep within.

ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਨੰਦਰਿ ॥

दूरि नाही देखहु करि नंदरि ॥

Doori naahee dekhahu kari nanddari ||

He is not far away; look, and see Him.

ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਇਉ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

बिघनु नाही गुरमुखि तरु तारी इउ भवजलु पारि लंघाई हे ॥१२॥

Bighanu naahee guramukhi taru taaree iu bhavajalu paari langghaaee he ||12||

No obstacles shall block your way; become Gurmukh, and cross over to the other side. This is the way to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||12||


ਦੇਹੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥

देही अंदरि नामु निवासी ॥

Dehee anddari naamu nivaasee ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the body.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥

आपे करता है अबिनासी ॥

Aape karataa hai abinaasee ||

The Creator Lord is eternal and imperishable.

ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਜਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

ना जीउ मरै न मारिआ जाई करि देखै सबदि रजाई हे ॥१३॥

Naa jeeu marai na maariaa jaaee kari dekhai sabadi rajaaee he ||13||

The soul does not die, and it cannot be killed; God creates and watches over all. Through the Word of the Shabad, His Will is manifest. ||13||


ਓਹੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥

ओहु निरमलु है नाही अंधिआरा ॥

Ohu niramalu hai naahee anddhiaaraa ||

He is immaculate, and has no darkness.

ਓਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਤਖਤਿ ਬਹੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥

ओहु आपे तखति बहै सचिआरा ॥

Ohu aape takhati bahai sachiaaraa ||

The True Lord Himself sits upon His throne.

ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਭਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਈ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

साकत कूड़े बंधि भवाईअहि मरि जनमहि आई जाई हे ॥१४॥

Saakat koo(rr)e banddhi bhavaaeeahi mari janamahi aaee jaaee he ||14||

The faithless cynics are bound and gagged, and forced to wander in reincarnation. They die, and are reborn, and continue coming and going. ||14||


ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

गुर के सेवक सतिगुर पिआरे ॥

Gur ke sevak satigur piaare ||

The Guru's servants are the Beloved of the True Guru.

ਓਇ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

ओइ बैसहि तखति सु सबदु वीचारे ॥

Oi baisahi takhati su sabadu veechaare ||

Contemplating the Shabad, they sit upon His throne.

ਤਤੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

ततु लहहि अंतरगति जाणहि सतसंगति साचु वडाई हे ॥१५॥

Tatu lahahi anttaragati jaa(nn)ahi satasanggati saachu vadaaee he ||15||

They realize the essence of reality, and know the state of their inner being. This is the true glorious greatness of those who join the Sat Sangat. ||15||


ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਜਨੁ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

आपि तरै जनु पितरा तारे ॥

Aapi tarai janu pitaraa taare ||

He Himself saves His humble servant, and saves his ancestors as well.

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥

संगति मुकति सु पारि उतारे ॥

Sanggati mukati su paari utaare ||

His companions are liberated; He carries them across.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥

नानकु तिस का लाला गोला जिनि गुरमुखि हरि लिव लाई हे ॥१६॥६॥

Naanaku tis kaa laalaa golaa jini guramukhi hari liv laaee he ||16||6||

Nanak is the servant and slave of that Gurmukh who lovingly focuses his consciousness on the Lord. ||16||6||


ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

मारू महला १ ॥

Maaroo mahalaa 1 ||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਕੇਤੇ ਜੁਗ ਵਰਤੇ ਗੁਬਾਰੈ ॥

केते जुग वरते गुबारै ॥

Kete jug varate gubaarai ||

For many ages, only darkness prevailed;

ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥

ताड़ी लाई अपर अपारै ॥

Taa(rr)ee laaee apar apaarai ||

The infinite, endless Lord was absorbed in the primal void.

ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

धुंधूकारि निरालमु बैठा ना तदि धंधु पसारा हे ॥१॥

Dhunddhookaari niraalamu baithaa naa tadi dhanddhu pasaaraa he ||1||

He sat alone and unaffected in absolute darkness; the world of conflict did not exist. ||1||


ਜੁਗ ਛਤੀਹ ਤਿਨੈ ਵਰਤਾਏ ॥

जुग छतीह तिनै वरताए ॥

Jug chhateeh tinai varataae ||

Thirty-six ages passed like this.

ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

जिउ तिसु भाणा तिवै चलाए ॥

Jiu tisu bhaa(nn)aa tivai chalaae ||

He causes all to happen by the Pleasure of His Will.

ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

तिसहि सरीकु न दीसै कोई आपे अपर अपारा हे ॥२॥

Tisahi sareeku na deesai koee aape apar apaaraa he ||2||

No rival of His can be seen. He Himself is infinite and endless. ||2||


ਗੁਪਤੇ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਜੁਗ ਚਤੁਆਰੇ ॥

गुपते बूझहु जुग चतुआरे ॥

Gupate boojhahu jug chatuaare ||

God is hidden throughout the four ages - understand this well.

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰੇ ॥

घटि घटि वरतै उदर मझारे ॥

Ghati ghati varatai udar majhaare ||

He pervades each and every heart, and is contained within the belly.

ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਏਕਾ ਏਕੀ ਵਰਤੈ ਕੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

जुगु जुगु एका एकी वरतै कोई बूझै गुर वीचारा हे ॥३॥

Jugu jugu ekaa ekee varatai koee boojhai gur veechaaraa he ||3||

The One and Only Lord prevails throughout the ages. How rare are those who contemplate the Guru, and understand this. ||3||


ਬਿੰਦੁ ਰਕਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਰੀਆ ॥

बिंदु रकतु मिलि पिंडु सरीआ ॥

Binddu rakatu mili pinddu sareeaa ||

From the union of the sperm and the egg, the body was formed.

ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੀਆ ॥

पउणु पाणी अगनी मिलि जीआ ॥

Pau(nn)u paa(nn)ee aganee mili jeeaa ||

From the union of air, water and fire, the living being is made.

ਆਪੇ ਚੋਜ ਕਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹੋਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

आपे चोज करे रंग महली होर माइआ मोह पसारा हे ॥४॥

Aape choj kare rangg mahalee hor maaiaa moh pasaaraa he ||4||

He Himself plays joyfully in the mansion of the body; all the rest is just attachment to Maya's expanse. ||4||


ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਉਰਧ ਧਿਆਨੀ ॥

गरभ कुंडल महि उरध धिआनी ॥

Garabh kunddal mahi uradh dhiaanee ||

Within the mother's womb, upside-down, the mortal meditated on God.

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥

आपे जाणै अंतरजामी ॥

Aape jaa(nn)ai anttarajaamee ||

The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything.

ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

सासि सासि सचु नामु समाले अंतरि उदर मझारा हे ॥५॥

Saasi saasi sachu naamu samaale anttari udar majhaaraa he ||5||

With each and every breath, he contemplated the True Name, deep within himself, within the womb. ||5||


ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥

चारि पदारथ लै जगि आइआ ॥

Chaari padaarath lai jagi aaiaa ||

He came into the world to obtain the four great blessings.

ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

सिव सकती घरि वासा पाइआ ॥

Siv sakatee ghari vaasaa paaiaa ||

He came to dwell in the home of the Shiva and Shakti, energy and matter.

ਏਕੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਪਿੜ ਹਾਰੇ ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

एकु विसारे ता पिड़ हारे अंधुलै नामु विसारा हे ॥६॥

Eku visaare taa pi(rr) haare anddhulai naamu visaaraa he ||6||

But he forgot the One Lord, and he has lost the game. The blind person forgets the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6||


ਬਾਲਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਬਾਲਕ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ॥

बालकु मरै बालक की लीला ॥

Baalaku marai baalak kee leelaa ||

The child dies in his childish games.

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਬਾਲੁ ਰੰਗੀਲਾ ॥

कहि कहि रोवहि बालु रंगीला ॥

Kahi kahi rovahi baalu ranggeelaa ||

They cry and mourn, saying that he was such a playful child.

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਸਾ ਸੋ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਲੀਆ ਭੂਲਾ ਰੋਵਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

जिस का सा सो तिन ही लीआ भूला रोवणहारा हे ॥७॥

Jis kaa saa so tin hee leeaa bhoolaa rova(nn)ahaaraa he ||7||

The Lord who owns him has taken him back. Those who weep and mourn are mistaken. ||7||


ਭਰਿ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਕਿ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

भरि जोबनि मरि जाहि कि कीजै ॥

Bhari jobani mari jaahi ki keejai ||

What can they do, if he dies in his youth?

ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਰੋਵੀਜੈ ॥

मेरा मेरा करि रोवीजै ॥

Meraa meraa kari roveejai ||

They cry out, ""His is mine, he is mine!""

ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਰੋਇ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

माइआ कारणि रोइ विगूचहि ध्रिगु जीवणु संसारा हे ॥८॥

Maaiaa kaara(nn)i roi vigoochahi dhrigu jeeva(nn)u sanssaaraa he ||8||

They cry for the sake of Maya, and are ruined; their lives in this world are cursed. ||8||


ਕਾਲੀ ਹੂ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਉਲੇ ਆਏ ॥

काली हू फुनि धउले आए ॥

Kaalee hoo phuni dhaule aae ||

Their black hair eventually turns grey.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਗਥੁ ਗਇਆ ਗਵਾਏ ॥

विणु नावै गथु गइआ गवाए ॥

Vi(nn)u naavai gathu gaiaa gavaae ||

Without the Name, they lose their wealth, and then leave.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਰੋਇ ਪੂਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

दुरमति अंधुला बिनसि बिनासै मूठे रोइ पूकारा हे ॥९॥

Duramati anddhulaa binasi binaasai moothe roi pookaaraa he ||9||

They are evil-minded and blind - they are totally ruined; they are plundered, and cry out in pain. ||9||


ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਨ ਰੋਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

आपु वीचारि न रोवै कोई ॥

Aapu veechaari na rovai koee ||

One who understands himself, does not cry.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥

सतिगुरु मिलै त सोझी होई ॥

Satiguru milai ta sojhee hoee ||

When he meets the True Guru, then he understands.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਨ ਖੂਲਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

बिनु गुर बजर कपाट न खूलहि सबदि मिलै निसतारा हे ॥१०॥

Binu gur bajar kapaat na khoolahi sabadi milai nisataaraa he ||10||

Without the Guru, the heavy, hard doors are not opened. Obtaining the Word of the Shabad, one is emancipated. ||10||


ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਦੇਹੀ ॥

बिरधि भइआ तनु छीजै देही ॥

Biradhi bhaiaa tanu chheejai dehee ||

The body grows old, and is beaten out of shape.

ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥

रामु न जपई अंति सनेही ॥

Raamu na japaee antti sanehee ||

But he does not meditate on the Lord, His only friend, even at the end.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾਲੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਖੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

नामु विसारि चलै मुहि कालै दरगह झूठु खुआरा हे ॥११॥

Naamu visaari chalai muhi kaalai daragah jhoothu khuaaraa he ||11||

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he departs with his face blackened. The false are humiliated in the Court of the Lord. ||11||


ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੋ ॥

नामु विसारि चलै कूड़िआरो ॥

Naamu visaari chalai koo(rr)iaaro ||

Forgetting the Naam, the false ones depart.

ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਪੜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਰੋ ॥

आवत जात पड़ै सिरि छारो ॥

Aavat jaat pa(rr)ai siri chhaaro ||

Coming and going, dust falls on their heads.

ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

साहुरड़ै घरि वासु न पाए पेईअड़ै सिरि मारा हे ॥१२॥

Saahura(rr)ai ghari vaasu na paae peeea(rr)ai siri maaraa he ||12||

The soul-bride finds no home in her in-laws' home, the world hereafter; she suffers in agony in this world of her parents' home. ||12||


ਖਾਜੈ ਪੈਝੈ ਰਲੀ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥

खाजै पैझै रली करीजै ॥

Khaajai paijhai ralee kareejai ||

She eats, dresses and plays joyfully,

ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਭਗਤੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥

बिनु अभ भगती बादि मरीजै ॥

Binu abh bhagatee baadi mareejai ||

But without loving devotional worship of the Lord, she dies uselessly.

ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

सर अपसर की सार न जाणै जमु मारे किआ चारा हे ॥१३॥

Sar apasar kee saar na jaa(nn)ai jamu maare kiaa chaaraa he ||13||

One who does not distinguish between good and evil, is beaten by the Messenger of Death; how can anyone escape this? ||13||


ਪਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

परविरती नरविरति पछाणै ॥

Paraviratee naravirati pachhaa(nn)ai ||

One who realizes what he has to possess, and what he has to abandon,

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

गुर कै संगि सबदि घरु जाणै ॥

Gur kai sanggi sabadi gharu jaa(nn)ai ||

Associating with the Guru, comes to know the Word of the Shabad, within the home of his own self.

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਖਰਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥

किस ही मंदा आखि न चलै सचि खरा सचिआरा हे ॥१४॥

Kis hee manddaa aakhi na chalai sachi kharaa sachiaaraa he ||14||

Do not call anyone else bad; follow this way of life. Those who are true are judged to be genuine by the True Lord. ||14||


ਸਾਚ ਬਿਨਾ ਦਰਿ ਸਿਝੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

साच बिना दरि सिझै न कोई ॥

Saach binaa dari sijhai na koee ||

Without Truth, no one succeeds in the Court of the Lord.

ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੈਝੈ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

साच सबदि पैझै पति होई ॥

Saach sabadi paijhai pati hoee ||

Through the True Shabad, one is robed in honor.

ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥

आपे बखसि लए तिसु भावै हउमै गरबु निवारा हे ॥१५॥

Aape bakhasi lae tisu bhaavai haumai garabu nivaaraa he ||15||

He forgives those with whom He is pleased; they silence their egotism and pride. ||15||


ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

गुर किरपा ते हुकमु पछाणै ॥

Gur kirapaa te hukamu pachhaa(nn)ai ||

One who realizes the Hukam of God's Command, by the Grace of the Guru,

ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

जुगह जुगंतर की बिधि जाणै ॥

Jugah juganttar kee bidhi jaa(nn)ai ||

Comes to know the lifestyle of the ages.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੭॥

नानक नामु जपहु तरु तारी सचु तारे तारणहारा हे ॥१६॥१॥७॥

Naanak naamu japahu taru taaree sachu taare taara(nn)ahaaraa he ||16||1||7||

O Nanak, chant the Naam, and cross over to the other side. The True Lord will carry you across. ||16||1||7||

Maaroo mahalaa 1 ||

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਸਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੈ ਕੋਈ ॥

हरि सा मीतु नाही मै कोई ॥

Hari saa meetu naahee mai koee ||

I have no other friend like the Lord.

ਜਿਨਿ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ॥

जिनि तनु मनु दीआ सुरति समोई ॥

Jini tanu manu deeaa surati samoee ||

He gave me body and mind, and infused consciousness into my being.

ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥

सरब जीआ प्रतिपालि समाले सो अंतरि दाना बीना हे ॥१॥

Sarab jeeaa prtipaali samaale so anttari daanaa beenaa he ||1||

He cherishes and cares for all beings; He is deep within, the wise, all-knowing Lord. ||1||


ਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਹਮ ਹੰਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

गुरु सरवरु हम हंस पिआरे ॥

Guru saravaru ham hanss piaare ||

The Guru is the sacred pool, and I am His beloved swan.

ਸਾਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਤਨ ਲਾਲ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਰੇ ॥

सागर महि रतन लाल बहु सारे ॥

Saagar mahi ratan laal bahu saare ||

In the ocean, there are so many jewels and rubies.

ਮੋਤੀ ਮਾਣਕ ਹੀਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥

मोती माणक हीरा हरि जसु गावत मनु तनु भीना हे ॥२॥

Motee maa(nn)ak heeraa hari jasu gaavat manu tanu bheenaa he ||2||

The Lord's Praises are pearls, gems and diamonds. Singing His Praises, my mind and body are drenched with His Love. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਹੁ ਅਗਾਧਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥

हरि अगम अगाहु अगाधि निराला ॥

Hari agam agaahu agaadhi niraalaa ||

The Lord is inaccessible, inscrutable, unfathomable and unattached.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥

हरि अंतु न पाईऐ गुर गोपाला ॥

Hari anttu na paaeeai gur gopaalaa ||

The Lord's limits cannot be found; the Guru is the Lord of the World.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਰੰਗਿ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥

सतिगुर मति तारे तारणहारा मेलि लए रंगि लीना हे ॥३॥

Satigur mati taare taara(nn)ahaaraa meli lae ranggi leenaa he ||3||

Through the Teachings of the True Guru, the Lord carries us across to the other side. He unites in His Union those who are colored by His Love. ||3||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਨੇਹੀ ॥

सतिगुर बाझहु मुकति किनेही ॥

Satigur baajhahu mukati kinehee ||

Without the True Guru, how can anyone be liberated?

ਓਹੁ ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਰਾਮ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥

ओहु आदि जुगादी राम सनेही ॥

Ohu aadi jugaadee raam sanehee ||

He has been the Friend of the Lord, from the very beginning of time, and all throughout the ages.

ਦਰਗਹ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਬਖਸੇ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥

दरगह मुकति करे करि किरपा बखसे अवगुण कीना हे ॥४॥

Daragah mukati kare kari kirapaa bakhase avagu(nn) keenaa he ||4||

By His Grace, He grants liberation in His Court; He forgives them for their sins. ||4||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥

सतिगुरु दाता मुकति कराए ॥

Satiguru daataa mukati karaae ||

The True Guru, the Giver, grants liberation;

ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

सभि रोग गवाए अम्रित रसु पाए ॥

Sabhi rog gavaae ammmrit rasu paae ||

All diseases are eradicated, and one is blessed with the Ambrosial Nectar.

ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਠਰੁ ਸੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥

जमु जागाति नाही करु लागै जिसु अगनि बुझी ठरु सीना हे ॥५॥

Jamu jaagaati naahee karu laagai jisu agani bujhee tharu seenaa he ||5||

Death, the tax collector, does not impose any tax on one whose inner fire has been put out, whose heart is cool and tranquil. ||5||


ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

काइआ हंस प्रीति बहु धारी ॥

Kaaiaa hanss preeti bahu dhaaree ||

The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan.

ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

ओहु जोगी पुरखु ओह सुंदरि नारी ॥

Ohu jogee purakhu oh sunddari naaree ||

He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਚੋਜ ਬਿਨੋਦੀ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤੈ ਮਤਾ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥

अहिनिसि भोगै चोज बिनोदी उठि चलतै मता न कीना हे ॥६॥

Ahinisi bhogai choj binodee uthi chalatai mataa na keenaa he ||6||

Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6||


ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛਾਜੈ ॥

स्रिसटि उपाइ रहे प्रभ छाजै ॥

Srisati upaai rahe prbh chhaajai ||

Creating the Universe, God remains diffused throughout it.

ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥

पउण पाणी बैसंतरु गाजै ॥

Pau(nn) paa(nn)ee baisanttaru gaajai ||

In the wind, water and fire, He vibrates and resounds.

ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥

मनूआ डोलै दूत संगति मिलि सो पाए जो किछु कीना हे ॥७॥

Manooaa dolai doot sanggati mili so paae jo kichhu keenaa he ||7||

The mind wavers, keeping company with evil passions; one obtains the rewards of his own actions. ||7||


ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੀਐ ॥

नामु विसारि दोख दुख सहीऐ ॥

Naamu visaari dokh dukh saheeai ||

Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ॥

हुकमु भइआ चलणा किउ रहीऐ ॥

Hukamu bhaiaa chala(nn)aa kiu raheeai ||

When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here?

ਨਰਕ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥

नरक कूप महि गोते खावै जिउ जल ते बाहरि मीना हे ॥८॥

Narak koop mahi gote khaavai jiu jal te baahari meenaa he ||8||

He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8||


ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਭੋਗਾਈਐ ॥

चउरासीह नरक साकतु भोगाईऐ ॥

Chauraaseeh narak saakatu bhogaaeeai ||

The faithless cynic has to endure 8.4 million hellish incarnations.

ਜੈਸਾ ਕੀਚੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

जैसा कीचै तैसो पाईऐ ॥

Jaisaa keechai taiso paaeeai ||

As he acts, so does he suffer.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥

सतिगुर बाझहु मुकति न होई किरति बाधा ग्रसि दीना हे ॥९॥

Satigur baajhahu mukati na hoee kirati baadhaa grsi deenaa he ||9||

Without the True Guru, there is no liberation. Bound and gagged by his own actions, he is helpless. ||9||


ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥

खंडे धार गली अति भीड़ी ॥

Khandde dhaar galee ati bhee(rr)ee ||

This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword.

ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਉ ਪੀੜੀ ॥

लेखा लीजै तिल जिउ पीड़ी ॥

Lekhaa leejai til jiu pee(rr)ee ||

When his account is read, he shall be crushed like the sesame seed in the mill.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥

मात पिता कलत्र सुत बेली नाही बिनु हरि रस मुकति न कीना हे ॥१०॥

Maat pitaa kalatr sut belee naahee binu hari ras mukati na keenaa he ||10||

Mother, father, spouse and child - none is anyone's friend in the end. Without the Lord's Love, no one is liberated. ||10||


ਮੀਤ ਸਖੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

मीत सखे केते जग माही ॥

Meet sakhe kete jag maahee ||

You may have many friends and companions in the world,

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

बिनु गुर परमेसर कोई नाही ॥

Binu gur paramesar koee naahee ||

But without the Guru, the Transcendent Lord Incarnate, there is no one at all.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥

गुर की सेवा मुकति पराइणि अनदिनु कीरतनु कीना हे ॥११॥

Gur kee sevaa mukati paraai(nn)i anadinu keeratanu keenaa he ||11||

Service to the Guru is the way to liberation. Night and day, sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||11||


ਕੂੜੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥

कूड़ु छोडि साचे कउ धावहु ॥

Koo(rr)u chhodi saache kau dhaavahu ||

Abandon falsehood, and pursue the Truth,

ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥

जो इछहु सोई फलु पावहु ॥

Jo ichhahu soee phalu paavahu ||

And you shall obtain the fruits of your desires.

ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥

साच वखर के वापारी विरले लै लाहा सउदा कीना हे ॥१२॥

Saach vakhar ke vaapaaree virale lai laahaa saudaa keenaa he ||12||

Very few are those who trade in the merchandise of Truth. Those who deal in it, obtain the true profit. ||12||


ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ॥

हरि हरि नामु वखरु लै चलहु ॥

Hari hari naamu vakharu lai chalahu ||

Depart with the merchandise of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har,

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਹਲਹੁ ॥

दरसनु पावहु सहजि महलहु ॥

Darasanu paavahu sahaji mahalahu ||

And you shall intuitively obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, in the Mansion of His Presence.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਚੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥

गुरमुखि खोजि लहहि जन पूरे इउ समदरसी चीना हे ॥१३॥

Guramukhi khoji lahahi jan poore iu samadarasee cheenaa he ||13||

The Gurmukhs search for Him and find Him; they are the perfect humble beings. In this way, they see Him, who looks upon all alike. ||13||
