ਸਹਜੇ ਆਸਣੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

सहजे आसणु असथिरु भाइआ ॥

Sahaje aasa(nn)u asathiru bhaaiaa ||

In peace and poise, they assume the unchanging position.

ਸਹਜੇ ਅਨਹਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥

सहजे अनहत सबदु वजाइआ ॥

Sahaje anahat sabadu vajaaiaa ||

In peace and poise, the unstruck vibration of the Shabad resounds.

ਸਹਜੇ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥

सहजे रुण झुणकारु सुहाइआ ॥

Sahaje ru(nn) jhu(nn)akaaru suhaaiaa ||

In peace and poise, the celestial bells resound.

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੭॥

ता कै घरि पारब्रहमु समाइआ ॥७॥

Taa kai ghari paarabrhamu samaaiaa ||7||

Within their homes, the Supreme Lord God is pervading. ||7||


ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪਰਿਓ ਕਰਮਾ ॥

सहजे जा कउ परिओ करमा ॥

Sahaje jaa kau pario karamaa ||

With intuitive ease, they meet the Lord, according to their karma.

ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸਚੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥

सहजे गुरु भेटिओ सचु धरमा ॥

Sahaje guru bhetio sachu dharamaa ||

With intuitive ease, they meet with the Guru, in the true Dharma.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਭਇਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

जा कै सहजु भइआ सो जाणै ॥

Jaa kai sahaju bhaiaa so jaa(nn)ai ||

Those who know, attain the poise of intuitive peace.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ॥੮॥੩॥

नानक दास ता कै कुरबाणै ॥८॥३॥

Naanak daas taa kai kurabaa(nn)ai ||8||3||

Slave Nanak is a sacrifice to them. ||8||3||

ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਗਰਭ ਵਾਸ ਤੇ ਟਰਿਆ ॥

प्रथमे गरभ वास ते टरिआ ॥

Prthame garabh vaas te tariaa ||

First, they come forth from the womb.

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੁਰਿਆ ॥

पुत्र कलत्र कुट्मब संगि जुरिआ ॥

Putr kalatr kutambb sanggi juriaa ||

They become attached to their children, spouses and families.

ਭੋਜਨੁ ਅਨਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਬਹੁ ਕਪਰੇ ॥

भोजनु अनिक प्रकार बहु कपरे ॥

Bhojanu anik prkaar bahu kapare ||

The foods of various sorts and appearances,

ਸਰਪਰ ਗਵਨੁ ਕਰਹਿਗੇ ਬਪੁਰੇ ॥੧॥

सरपर गवनु करहिगे बपुरे ॥१॥

Sarapar gavanu karahige bapure ||1||

will surely pass away, O wretched mortal! ||1||


ਕਵਨੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਟਰੈ ॥

कवनु असथानु जो कबहु न टरै ॥

Kavanu asathaanu jo kabahu na tarai ||

What is that place which never perishes?

ਕਵਨੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कवनु सबदु जितु दुरमति हरै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kavanu sabadu jitu duramati harai ||1|| rahaau ||

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਪੁਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ॥

इंद्र पुरी महि सरपर मरणा ॥

Ianddr puree mahi sarapar mara(nn)aa ||

In the Realm of Indra, death is sure and certain.

ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੁਰੀ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ॥

ब्रहम पुरी निहचलु नही रहणा ॥

Brham puree nihachalu nahee raha(nn)aa ||

The Realm of Brahma shall not remain permanent.

ਸਿਵ ਪੁਰੀ ਕਾ ਹੋਇਗਾ ਕਾਲਾ ॥

सिव पुरी का होइगा काला ॥

Siv puree kaa hoigaa kaalaa ||

The Realm of Shiva shall also perish.

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਤਾਲਾ ॥੨॥

त्रै गुण माइआ बिनसि बिताला ॥२॥

Trai gu(nn) maaiaa binasi bitaalaa ||2||

The three dispositions, Maya and the demons shall vanish. ||2||


ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨ ਅਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥

गिरि तर धरणि गगन अरु तारे ॥

Giri tar dhara(nn)i gagan aru taare ||

The mountains, the trees, the earth, the sky and the stars;

ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਪਵਣੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਨੀਰਾਰੇ ॥

रवि ससि पवणु पावकु नीरारे ॥

Ravi sasi pava(nn)u paavaku neeraare ||

The sun, the moon, the wind, water and fire;

ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਬਰਤ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦਾ ॥

दिनसु रैणि बरत अरु भेदा ॥

Dinasu rai(nn)i barat aru bhedaa ||

Day and night, fasting days and their determination;

ਸਾਸਤ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿਗੇ ਬੇਦਾ ॥੩॥

सासत सिम्रिति बिनसहिगे बेदा ॥३॥

Saasat simmmriti binasahige bedaa ||3||

The Shaastras, the Simritees and the Vedas shall pass away. ||3||


ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਪੋਥੀ ॥

तीरथ देव देहुरा पोथी ॥

Teerath dev dehuraa pothee ||

The sacred shrines of pilgrimage, gods, temples and holy books;

ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਸੋਚ ਪਾਕ ਹੋਤੀ ॥

माला तिलकु सोच पाक होती ॥

Maalaa tilaku soch paak hotee ||

Rosaries, ceremonial tilak marks on the forehead, meditative people, the pure, and the performers of burnt offerings;

ਧੋਤੀ ਡੰਡਉਤਿ ਪਰਸਾਦਨ ਭੋਗਾ ॥

धोती डंडउति परसादन भोगा ॥

Dhotee danddauti parasaadan bhogaa ||

Wearing loin cloths, bowing in reverence and the enjoyment of sacred foods

ਗਵਨੁ ਕਰੈਗੋ ਸਗਲੋ ਲੋਗਾ ॥੪॥

गवनु करैगो सगलो लोगा ॥४॥

Gavanu karaigo sagalo logaa ||4||

- all these, and all people, shall pass away. ||4||


ਜਾਤਿ ਵਰਨ ਤੁਰਕ ਅਰੁ ਹਿੰਦੂ ॥

जाति वरन तुरक अरु हिंदू ॥

Jaati varan turak aru hinddoo ||

Social classes, races, Muslims and Hindus;

ਪਸੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਜਿੰਦੂ ॥

पसु पंखी अनिक जोनि जिंदू ॥

Pasu pankkhee anik joni jinddoo ||

Beasts, birds and the many varieties of beings and creatures;

ਸਗਲ ਪਾਸਾਰੁ ਦੀਸੈ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥

सगल पासारु दीसै पासारा ॥

Sagal paasaaru deesai paasaaraa ||

The entire world and the visible universe

ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇਗੋ ਸਗਲ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥੫॥

बिनसि जाइगो सगल आकारा ॥५॥

Binasi jaaigo sagal aakaaraa ||5||

- all forms of existence shall pass away. ||5||


ਸਹਜ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥

सहज सिफति भगति ततु गिआना ॥

Sahaj siphati bhagati tatu giaanaa ||

Through the Praises of the Lord, devotional worship, spiritual wisdom and the essence of reality,

ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਥਾਨਾ ॥

सदा अनंदु निहचलु सचु थाना ॥

Sadaa ananddu nihachalu sachu thaanaa ||

Eternal bliss and the imperishable true place are obtained.

ਤਹਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਗੁਣ ਰਸੈ ॥

तहा संगति साध गुण रसै ॥

Tahaa sanggati saadh gu(nn) rasai ||

There, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the Lord's Glorious Praises are sung with love.

ਅਨਭਉ ਨਗਰੁ ਤਹਾ ਸਦ ਵਸੈ ॥੬॥

अनभउ नगरु तहा सद वसै ॥६॥

Anabhau nagaru tahaa sad vasai ||6||

There, in the city of fearlessness, He dwells forever. ||6||


ਤਹ ਭਉ ਭਰਮਾ ਸੋਗੁ ਨ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥

तह भउ भरमा सोगु न चिंता ॥

Tah bhau bharamaa sogu na chinttaa ||

There is no fear, doubt, suffering or anxiety there;

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਵਣੁ ਮਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਹੋਤਾ ॥

आवणु जावणु मिरतु न होता ॥

Aava(nn)u jaava(nn)u miratu na hotaa ||

There is no coming or going, and no death there.

ਤਹ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਅਨਹਤ ਆਖਾਰੇ ॥

तह सदा अनंद अनहत आखारे ॥

Tah sadaa anandd anahat aakhaare ||

There is eternal bliss, and the unstruck celestial music there.

ਭਗਤ ਵਸਹਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਆਧਾਰੇ ॥੭॥

भगत वसहि कीरतन आधारे ॥७॥

Bhagat vasahi keeratan aadhaare ||7||

The devotees dwell there, with the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises as their support. ||7||


ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥

पारब्रहम का अंतु न पारु ॥

Paarabrham kaa anttu na paaru ||

There is no end or limitation to the Supreme Lord God.

ਕਉਣੁ ਕਰੈ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

कउणु करै ता का बीचारु ॥

Kau(nn)u karai taa kaa beechaaru ||

Who can embrace His contemplation?

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥

कहु नानक जिसु किरपा करै ॥

Kahu naanak jisu kirapaa karai ||

Says Nanak, when the Lord showers His Mercy,

ਨਿਹਚਲ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਰੈ ॥੮॥੪॥

निहचल थानु साधसंगि तरै ॥८॥४॥

Nihachal thaanu saadhasanggi tarai ||8||4||

The imperishable home is obtained; in the Saadh Sangat, you shall be saved. ||8||4||

Gau(rr)ee mahalaa 5 ||

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे सोई सूरा ॥

Jo isu maare soee sooraa ||

One who kills this is a spiritual hero.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे सोई पूरा ॥

Jo isu maare soee pooraa ||

One who kills this is perfect.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

जो इसु मारे तिसहि वडिआई ॥

Jo isu maare tisahi vadiaaee ||

One who kills this obtains glorious greatness.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

जो इसु मारे तिस का दुखु जाई ॥१॥

Jo isu maare tis kaa dukhu jaaee ||1||

One who kills this is freed of suffering. ||1||


ਐਸਾ ਕੋਇ ਜਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥

ऐसा कोइ जि दुबिधा मारि गवावै ॥

Aisaa koi ji dubidhaa maari gavaavai ||

How rare is such a person, who kills and casts off duality.

ਇਸਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਜੋਗੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

इसहि मारि राज जोगु कमावै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Isahi maari raaj jogu kamaavai ||1|| rahaau ||

Killing it, he attains Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਭਉ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

जो इसु मारे तिस कउ भउ नाहि ॥

Jo isu maare tis kau bhau naahi ||

One who kills this has no fear.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥

जो इसु मारे सु नामि समाहि ॥

Jo isu maare su naami samaahi ||

One who kills this is absorbed in the Naam.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ॥

जो इसु मारे तिस की त्रिसना बुझै ॥

Jo isu maare tis kee trisanaa bujhai ||

One who kills this has his desires quenched.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਿਝੈ ॥੨॥

जो इसु मारे सु दरगह सिझै ॥२॥

Jo isu maare su daragah sijhai ||2||

One who kills this is approved in the Court of the Lord. ||2||


ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे सो धनवंता ॥

Jo isu maare so dhanavanttaa ||

One who kills this is wealthy and prosperous.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਪਤਿਵੰਤਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे सो पतिवंता ॥

Jo isu maare so pativanttaa ||

One who kills this is honorable.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਤੀ ॥

जो इसु मारे सोई जती ॥

Jo isu maare soee jatee ||

One who kills this is truly a celibate.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਗਤੀ ॥੩॥

जो इसु मारे तिसु होवै गती ॥३॥

Jo isu maare tisu hovai gatee ||3||

One who kills this attains salvation. ||3||


ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਆਇਆ ਗਨੀ ॥

जो इसु मारे तिस का आइआ गनी ॥

Jo isu maare tis kaa aaiaa ganee ||

One who kills this - his coming is auspicious.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਧਨੀ ॥

जो इसु मारे सु निहचलु धनी ॥

Jo isu maare su nihachalu dhanee ||

One who kills this is steady and wealthy.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋ ਵਡਭਾਗਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे सो वडभागा ॥

Jo isu maare so vadabhaagaa ||

One who kills this is very fortunate.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗਾ ॥੪॥

जो इसु मारे सु अनदिनु जागा ॥४॥

Jo isu maare su anadinu jaagaa ||4||

One who kills this remains awake and aware, night and day. ||4||


ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे सु जीवन मुकता ॥

Jo isu maare su jeevan mukataa ||

One who kills this is Jivan Mukta, liberated while yet alive.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥

जो इसु मारे तिस की निरमल जुगता ॥

Jo isu maare tis kee niramal jugataa ||

One who kills this lives a pure lifestyle.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਗਿਆਨੀ ॥

जो इसु मारे सोई सुगिआनी ॥

Jo isu maare soee sugiaanee ||

One who kills this is spiritually wise.

ਜੋ ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨੀ ॥੫॥

जो इसु मारे सु सहज धिआनी ॥५॥

Jo isu maare su sahaj dhiaanee ||5||

One who kills this meditates intuitively. ||5||


ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਰੈ ॥

इसु मारी बिनु थाइ न परै ॥

Isu maaree binu thaai na parai ||

Without killing this, one is not acceptable,

ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਜਾਪ ਤਪ ਕਰੈ ॥

कोटि करम जाप तप करै ॥

Koti karam jaap tap karai ||

Even though one may perform millions of rituals, chants and austerities.

ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ॥

इसु मारी बिनु जनमु न मिटै ॥

Isu maaree binu janamu na mitai ||

Without killing this, one does not escape the cycle of reincarnation.

ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਛੁਟੈ ॥੬॥

इसु मारी बिनु जम ते नही छुटै ॥६॥

Isu maaree binu jam te nahee chhutai ||6||

Without killing this, one does not escape death. ||6||


ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

इसु मारी बिनु गिआनु न होई ॥

Isu maaree binu giaanu na hoee ||

Without killing this, one does not obtain spiritual wisdom.

ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਧੋਈ ॥

इसु मारी बिनु जूठि न धोई ॥

Isu maaree binu joothi na dhoee ||

Without killing this, one's impurity is not washed off.

ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ॥

इसु मारी बिनु सभु किछु मैला ॥

Isu maaree binu sabhu kichhu mailaa ||

Without killing this, everything is filthy.

ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਉਲਾ ॥੭॥

इसु मारी बिनु सभु किछु जउला ॥७॥

Isu maaree binu sabhu kichhu jaulaa ||7||

Without killing this, everything is a losing game. ||7||


ਜਾ ਕਉ ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ॥

जा कउ भए क्रिपाल क्रिपा निधि ॥

Jaa kau bhae kripaal kripaa nidhi ||

When the Lord, the Treasure of Mercy, bestows His Mercy,

ਤਿਸੁ ਭਈ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਧਿ ॥

तिसु भई खलासी होई सगल सिधि ॥

Tisu bhaee khalaasee hoee sagal sidhi ||

One obtains release, and attains total perfection.

ਗੁਰਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਮਾਰੀ ॥

गुरि दुबिधा जा की है मारी ॥

Guri dubidhaa jaa kee hai maaree ||

One whose duality has been killed by the Guru,

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੮॥੫॥

कहु नानक सो ब्रहम बीचारी ॥८॥५॥

Kahu naanak so brham beechaaree ||8||5||

Says Nanak, contemplates God. ||8||5||

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਮੀਤੁ ॥

हरि सिउ जुरै त सभु को मीतु ॥

Hari siu jurai ta sabhu ko meetu ||

When someone attaches himself to the Lord, then everyone is his friend.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ॥

हरि सिउ जुरै त निहचलु चीतु ॥

Hari siu jurai ta nihachalu cheetu ||

When someone attaches himself to the Lord, then his consciousness is steady.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ॥

हरि सिउ जुरै न विआपै काड़्हा ॥

Hari siu jurai na viaapai kaa(rr)haa ||

When someone attaches himself to the Lord, he is not afflicted by worries.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

हरि सिउ जुरै त होइ निसतारा ॥१॥

Hari siu jurai ta hoi nisataaraa ||1||

When someone attaches himself to the Lord, he is emancipated. ||1||


ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੋਰੁ ॥

रे मन मेरे तूं हरि सिउ जोरु ॥

Re man mere toonn hari siu joru ||

O my mind, unite yourself with the Lord.

ਕਾਜਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

काजि तुहारै नाही होरु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kaaji tuhaarai naahee horu ||1|| rahaau ||

Nothing else is of any use to you. ||1|| Pause ||


ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇ ਜੋ ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰ ॥

वडे वडे जो दुनीआदार ॥

Vade vade jo duneeaadaar ||

The great and powerful people of the world

ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥

काहू काजि नाही गावार ॥

Kaahoo kaaji naahee gaavaar ||

Are of no use, you fool!

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕੁਲੁ ਸੁਣਹਿ ॥

हरि का दासु नीच कुलु सुणहि ॥

Hari kaa daasu neech kulu su(nn)ahi ||

The Lord's slave may be born of humble origins,

ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਉਧਰਹਿ ॥੨॥

तिस कै संगि खिन महि उधरहि ॥२॥

Tis kai sanggi khin mahi udharahi ||2||

But in his company, you shall be saved in an instant. ||2||


ਕੋਟਿ ਮਜਨ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਮ ॥

कोटि मजन जा कै सुणि नाम ॥

Koti majan jaa kai su(nn)i naam ||

Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is equal to millions of cleansing baths.

ਕੋਟਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੈ ਧਿਆਨ ॥

कोटि पूजा जा कै है धिआन ॥

Koti poojaa jaa kai hai dhiaan ||

Meditating on it is equal to millions of worship ceremonies.

ਕੋਟਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

कोटि पुंन सुणि हरि की बाणी ॥

Koti punn su(nn)i hari kee baa(nn)ee ||

Hearing the Word of the Lord's Bani is equal to giving millions in alms.

ਕੋਟਿ ਫਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥

कोटि फला गुर ते बिधि जाणी ॥३॥

Koti phalaa gur te bidhi jaa(nn)ee ||3||

To know the way, through the Guru, is equal to millions of rewards. ||3||


ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਤ ॥

मन अपुने महि फिरि फिरि चेत ॥

Man apune mahi phiri phiri chet ||

Within your mind, over and over again, think of Him,

ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥

बिनसि जाहि माइआ के हेत ॥

Binasi jaahi maaiaa ke het ||

And your love of Maya shall depart.

ਹਰਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

हरि अबिनासी तुमरै संगि ॥

Hari abinaasee tumarai sanggi ||

The Imperishable Lord is always with you.

ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਚੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੪॥

मन मेरे रचु राम कै रंगि ॥४॥

Man mere rachu raam kai ranggi ||4||

O my mind, immerse yourself in the Love of the Lord. ||4||


ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਉਤਰੈ ਸਭ ਭੂਖ ॥

जा कै कामि उतरै सभ भूख ॥

Jaa kai kaami utarai sabh bhookh ||

Working for Him, all hunger departs.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਦੂਤ ॥

जा कै कामि न जोहहि दूत ॥

Jaa kai kaami na johahi doot ||

Working for Him, the Messenger of Death will not be watching you.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਗਮਰੁ ॥

जा कै कामि तेरा वड गमरु ॥

Jaa kai kaami teraa vad gamaru ||

Working for Him, you shall obtain glorious greatness.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅਮਰੁ ॥੫॥

जा कै कामि होवहि तूं अमरु ॥५॥

Jaa kai kaami hovahi toonn amaru ||5||

Working for Him, you shall become immortal. ||5||


ਜਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਡਾਨ ॥

जा के चाकर कउ नही डान ॥

Jaa ke chaakar kau nahee daan ||

His servant does not suffer punishment.

ਜਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਨ ॥

जा के चाकर कउ नही बान ॥

Jaa ke chaakar kau nahee baan ||

His servant suffers no loss.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦਫਤਰਿ ਪੁਛੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਾ ॥

जा कै दफतरि पुछै न लेखा ॥

Jaa kai daphatari puchhai na lekhaa ||

In His Court, His servant does not have to answer for his account.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਿਸੇਖਾ ॥੬॥

ता की चाकरी करहु बिसेखा ॥६॥

Taa kee chaakaree karahu bisekhaa ||6||

So serve Him with distinction. ||6||


ਜਾ ਕੈ ਊਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਾਤ ॥

जा कै ऊन नाही काहू बात ॥

Jaa kai un naahee kaahoo baat ||

He is not lacking in anything.

ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੇਕਹਿ ਭਾਤਿ ॥

एकहि आपि अनेकहि भाति ॥

Ekahi aapi anekahi bhaati ||

He Himself is One, although He appears in so many forms.

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥

जा की द्रिसटि होइ सदा निहाल ॥

Jaa kee drisati hoi sadaa nihaal ||

By His Glance of Grace, you shall be happy forever.

ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ॥੭॥

मन मेरे करि ता की घाल ॥७॥

Man mere kari taa kee ghaal ||7||

So work for Him, O my mind. ||7||


ਨਾ ਕੋ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਮੂੜਾ ॥

ना को चतुरु नाही को मूड़ा ॥

Naa ko chaturu naahee ko moo(rr)aa ||

No one is clever, and no one is foolish.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਸੂਰਾ ॥

ना को हीणु नाही को सूरा ॥

Naa ko hee(nn)u naahee ko sooraa ||

No one is weak, and no one is a hero.

ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

जितु को लाइआ तित ही लागा ॥

Jitu ko laaiaa tit hee laagaa ||

As the Lord attaches someone, so is he attached.

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੮॥੬॥

सो सेवकु नानक जिसु भागा ॥८॥६॥

So sevaku naanak jisu bhaagaa ||8||6||

He alone is the Lord's servant, O Nanak, who is so blessed. ||8||6||

गउड़ी महला ५ ॥

Gau(rr)ee mahalaa 5 ||

Gauree, Fifth Mehl:

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਸਰਪ ਆਰਜਾਰੀ ॥

बिनु सिमरन जैसे सरप आरजारी ॥

Binu simaran jaise sarap aarajaaree ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one's life is like that of a snake.

ਤਿਉ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

तिउ जीवहि साकत नामु बिसारी ॥१॥

Tiu jeevahi saakat naamu bisaaree ||1||

This is how the faithless cynic lives, forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||


ਏਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਆ ॥

एक निमख जो सिमरन महि जीआ ॥

Ek nimakh jo simaran mahi jeeaa ||

One who lives in meditative remembrance, even for an instant,

ਕੋਟਿ ਦਿਨਸ ਲਾਖ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कोटि दिनस लाख सदा थिरु थीआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Koti dinas laakh sadaa thiru theeaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Lives for hundreds of thousands and millions of days, and becomes stable forever. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਸ ॥

बिनु सिमरन ध्रिगु करम करास ॥

Binu simaran dhrigu karam karaas ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one's actions and works are cursed.

ਕਾਗ ਬਤਨ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਹਿ ਵਾਸ ॥੨॥

काग बतन बिसटा महि वास ॥२॥

Kaag batan bisataa mahi vaas ||2||

Like the crow's beak, he dwells in manure. ||2||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਭਏ ਕੂਕਰ ਕਾਮ ॥

बिनु सिमरन भए कूकर काम ॥

Binu simaran bhae kookar kaam ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one acts like a dog.

ਸਾਕਤ ਬੇਸੁਆ ਪੂਤ ਨਿਨਾਮ ॥੩॥

साकत बेसुआ पूत निनाम ॥३॥

Saakat besuaa poot ninaam ||3||

The faithless cynic is nameless, like the prostitute's son. ||3||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਜੈਸੇ ਸੀਙ ਛਤਾਰਾ ॥

बिनु सिमरन जैसे सीङ छतारा ॥

Binu simaran jaise see(ng) chhataaraa ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a horned ram.

ਬੋਲਹਿ ਕੂਰੁ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੁਖੁ ਕਾਰਾ ॥੪॥

बोलहि कूरु साकत मुखु कारा ॥४॥

Bolahi kooru saakat mukhu kaaraa ||4||

The faithless cynic barks out his lies, and his face is blackened. ||4||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਗਰਧਭ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ॥

बिनु सिमरन गरधभ की निआई ॥

Binu simaran garadhabh kee niaaee ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a donkey.

ਸਾਕਤ ਥਾਨ ਭਰਿਸਟ ਫਿਰਾਹੀ ॥੫॥

साकत थान भरिसट फिराही ॥५॥

Saakat thaan bharisat phiraahee ||5||

The faithless cynic wanders around in polluted places. ||5||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੂਕਰ ਹਰਕਾਇਆ ॥

बिनु सिमरन कूकर हरकाइआ ॥

Binu simaran kookar harakaaiaa ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, one is like a mad dog.

ਸਾਕਤ ਲੋਭੀ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥

साकत लोभी बंधु न पाइआ ॥६॥

Saakat lobhee banddhu na paaiaa ||6||

The greedy, faithless cynic falls into entanglements. ||6||


ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਘਾਤੀ ॥

बिनु सिमरन है आतम घाती ॥

Binu simaran hai aatam ghaatee ||

Without meditating in remembrance on the Lord, he murders his own soul.

ਸਾਕਤ ਨੀਚ ਤਿਸੁ ਕੁਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤੀ ॥੭॥

साकत नीच तिसु कुलु नही जाती ॥७॥

Saakat neech tisu kulu nahee jaatee ||7||

The faithless cynic is wretched, without family or social standing. ||7||


ਜਿਸੁ ਭਇਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥

जिसु भइआ क्रिपालु तिसु सतसंगि मिलाइआ ॥

Jisu bhaiaa kripaalu tisu satasanggi milaaiaa ||

When the Lord becomes merciful, one joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੭॥

कहु नानक गुरि जगतु तराइआ ॥८॥७॥

Kahu naanak guri jagatu taraaiaa ||8||7||

Says Nanak, the Guru has saved the world. ||8||7||

गुर कै बचनि मोहि परम गति पाई ॥

Gur kai bachani mohi param gati paaee ||

Through the Guru's Word, I have attained the supreme status.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਈ ॥੧॥

गुरि पूरै मेरी पैज रखाई ॥१॥

Guri poorai meree paij rakhaaee ||1||

The Perfect Guru has preserved my honor. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥

गुर कै बचनि धिआइओ मोहि नाउ ॥

Gur kai bachani dhiaaio mohi naau ||

Through the Guru's Word, I meditate on the Name.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादि मोहि मिलिआ थाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Gur parasaadi mohi miliaa thaau ||1|| rahaau ||

By Guru's Grace, I have obtained a place of rest. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਰਸਨ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥

गुर कै बचनि सुणि रसन वखाणी ॥

Gur kai bachani su(nn)i rasan vakhaa(nn)ee ||

I listen to the Guru's Word, and chant it with my tongue.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥੨॥

गुर किरपा ते अम्रित मेरी बाणी ॥२॥

Gur kirapaa te ammmrit meree baa(nn)ee ||2||

By Guru's Grace, my speech is like nectar. ||2||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪੁ ॥

गुर कै बचनि मिटिआ मेरा आपु ॥

Gur kai bachani mitiaa meraa aapu ||

Through the Guru's Word, my selfishness and conceit have been removed.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਇਆ ਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਪਰਤਾਪੁ ॥੩॥

गुर की दइआ ते मेरा वड परतापु ॥३॥

Gur kee daiaa te meraa vad parataapu ||3||

Through the Guru's kindness, I have obtained glorious greatness. ||3||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਮੁ ॥

गुर कै बचनि मिटिआ मेरा भरमु ॥

Gur kai bachani mitiaa meraa bharamu ||

Through the Guru's Word, my doubts have been removed.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੪॥

गुर कै बचनि पेखिओ सभु ब्रहमु ॥४॥

Gur kai bachani pekhio sabhu brhamu ||4||

Through the Guru's Word, I see God everywhere. ||4||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕੀਨੋ ਰਾਜੁ ਜੋਗੁ ॥

गुर कै बचनि कीनो राजु जोगु ॥

Gur kai bachani keeno raaju jogu ||

Through the Guru's Word, I practice Raja Yoga, the Yoga of meditation and success.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਲੋਗੁ ॥੫॥

गुर कै संगि तरिआ सभु लोगु ॥५॥

Gur kai sanggi tariaa sabhu logu ||5||

In the Company of the Guru, all the people of the world are saved. ||5||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਿਧਿ ॥

गुर कै बचनि मेरे कारज सिधि ॥

Gur kai bachani mere kaaraj sidhi ||

Through the Guru's Word, my affairs are resolved.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਉ ਨਿਧਿ ॥੬॥

गुर कै बचनि पाइआ नाउ निधि ॥६॥

Gur kai bachani paaiaa naau nidhi ||6||

Through the Guru's Word, I have obtained the nine treasures. ||6||


ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥

जिनि जिनि कीनी मेरे गुर की आसा ॥

Jini jini keenee mere gur kee aasaa ||

Whoever places his hopes in my Guru,

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਕਟੀਐ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸਾ ॥੭॥

तिस की कटीऐ जम की फासा ॥७॥

Tis kee kateeai jam kee phaasaa ||7||

Has the noose of death cut away. ||7||


ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਮੁ ॥

गुर कै बचनि जागिआ मेरा करमु ॥

Gur kai bachani jaagiaa meraa karamu ||

Through the Guru's Word, my good karma has been awakened.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ॥੮॥੮॥

नानक गुरु भेटिआ पारब्रहमु ॥८॥८॥

Naanak guru bhetiaa paarabrhamu ||8||8||

O Nanak, meeting with the Guru, I have found the Supreme Lord God. ||8||8||


ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਸਿਮਰਉ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ॥

Tisu gur kau simarau saasi saasi ||

I remember the Guru with each and every breath.

ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुरु मेरे प्राण सतिगुरु मेरी रासि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Guru mere praa(nn) satiguru meree raasi ||1|| rahaau ||

The Guru is my breath of life, the True Guru is my wealth. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਜੀਵਾ ॥

गुर का दरसनु देखि देखि जीवा ॥

Gur kaa darasanu dekhi dekhi jeevaa ||

Beholding the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan, I live.

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਧੋਇ ਧੋਇ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥

गुर के चरण धोइ धोइ पीवा ॥१॥

Gur ke chara(nn) dhoi dhoi peevaa ||1||

I wash the Guru's Feet, and drink in this water. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਨਿਤ ਮਜਨੁ ਕਰਉ ॥

गुर की रेणु नित मजनु करउ ॥

Gur kee re(nn)u nit majanu karau ||

I take my daily bath in the dust of the Guru's Feet.

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਹਰਉ ॥੨॥

जनम जनम की हउमै मलु हरउ ॥२॥

Janam janam kee haumai malu harau ||2||

The egotistical filth of countless incarnations is washed off. ||2||


ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਝੂਲਾਵਉ ਪਾਖਾ ॥

तिसु गुर कउ झूलावउ पाखा ॥

Tisu gur kau jhoolaavau paakhaa ||

I wave the fan over the Guru.

ਮਹਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਤੇ ਹਾਥੁ ਦੇ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੩॥

महा अगनि ते हाथु दे राखा ॥३॥

Mahaa agani te haathu de raakhaa ||3||

Giving me His Hand, He has saved me from the great fire. ||3||


ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਢੋਵਉ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

तिसु गुर कै ग्रिहि ढोवउ पाणी ॥

Tisu gur kai grihi dhovau paa(nn)ee ||

I carry water for the Guru's household;

ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਅਕਲ ਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੪॥

जिसु गुर ते अकल गति जाणी ॥४॥

Jisu gur te akal gati jaa(nn)ee ||4||

From the Guru, I have learned the Way of the One Lord. ||4||


ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੀਸਉ ਨੀਤ ॥

तिसु गुर कै ग्रिहि पीसउ नीत ॥

Tisu gur kai grihi peesau neet ||

I grind the corn for the Guru's household.

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵੈਰੀ ਸਭ ਮੀਤ ॥੫॥

जिसु परसादि वैरी सभ मीत ॥५॥

Jisu parasaadi vairee sabh meet ||5||

By His Grace, all my enemies have become friends. ||5||


ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਦੀਨਾ ਜੀਉ ॥

जिनि गुरि मो कउ दीना जीउ ॥

The Guru who gave me my soul,

ਆਪੁਨਾ ਦਾਸਰਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਲਿ ਲੀਉ ॥੬॥

आपुना दासरा आपे मुलि लीउ ॥६॥

Aapunaa daasaraa aape muli leeu ||6||

Has Himself purchased me, and made me His slave. ||6||


ਆਪੇ ਲਾਇਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

आपे लाइओ अपना पिआरु ॥

Aape laaio apanaa piaaru ||

He Himself has blessed me with His Love.

ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕਰੀ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੁ ॥੭॥

सदा सदा तिसु गुर कउ करी नमसकारु ॥७॥

Sadaa sadaa tisu gur kau karee namasakaaru ||7||

Forever and ever, I humbly bow to the Guru. ||7||


ਕਲਿ ਕਲੇਸ ਭੈ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਥਾ ॥

कलि कलेस भै भ्रम दुख लाथा ॥

Kali kales bhai bhrm dukh laathaa ||

My troubles, conflicts, fears, doubts and pains have been dispelled;

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਰਾਥਾ ॥੮॥੯॥

कहु नानक मेरा गुरु समराथा ॥८॥९॥

Kahu naanak meraa guru samaraathaa ||8||9||

Says Nanak, my Guru is All-powerful. ||8||9||

मिलु मेरे गोबिंद अपना नामु देहु ॥

Milu mere gobindd apanaa naamu dehu ||

Meet me, O my Lord of the Universe. Please bless me with Your Name.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਅਸਨੇਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

नाम बिना ध्रिगु ध्रिगु असनेहु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Naam binaa dhrigu dhrigu asanehu ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, cursed, cursed is love and intimacy. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਰੈ ਖਾਇ ॥

नाम बिना जो पहिरै खाइ ॥

Naam binaa jo pahirai khaai ||

Without the Naam, one who dresses and eats well

ਜਿਉ ਕੂਕਰੁ ਜੂਠਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥

जिउ कूकरु जूठन महि पाइ ॥१॥

Jiu kookaru joothan mahi paai ||1||

Is like a dog, who falls in and eats impure foods. ||1||


ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੇਤਾ ਬਿਉਹਾਰੁ ॥

नाम बिना जेता बिउहारु ॥

Naam binaa jetaa biuhaaru ||

Without the Naam, all occupations are useless,

ਜਿਉ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

जिउ मिरतक मिथिआ सीगारु ॥२॥

Jiu miratak mithiaa seegaaru ||2||

like the decorations on a dead body. ||2||


ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ॥

नामु बिसारि करे रस भोग ॥

Naamu bisaari kare ras bhog ||

One who forgets the Naam and indulges in pleasures,

ਸੁਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੋਗ ॥੩॥

सुखु सुपनै नही तन महि रोग ॥३॥

Sukhu supanai nahee tan mahi rog ||3||

Shall find no peace, even in dreams; his body shall become diseased. ||3||


ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਨ ਕਾਜ ॥

नामु तिआगि करे अन काज ॥

Naamu tiaagi kare an kaaj ||

One who renounces the Naam and engages in other occupations,

ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਜ ॥੪॥

बिनसि जाइ झूठे सभि पाज ॥४॥

Binasi jaai jhoothe sabhi paaj ||4||

Shall see all of his false pretenses fall away. ||4||


ਨਾਮ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥

नाम संगि मनि प्रीति न लावै ॥

Naam sanggi mani preeti na laavai ||

One whose mind does not embrace love for the Naam

ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੋ ਨਰਕਿ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੫॥

कोटि करम करतो नरकि जावै ॥५॥

Koti karam karato naraki jaavai ||5||

Shall go to hell, even though he may perform millions of ceremonial rituals. ||5||


ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਆਰਾਧਾ ॥

हरि का नामु जिनि मनि न आराधा ॥

Hari kaa naamu jini mani na aaraadhaa ||

One whose mind does not contemplate the Name of the Lord

ਚੋਰ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ॥੬॥

चोर की निआई जम पुरि बाधा ॥६॥

Chor kee niaaee jam puri baadhaa ||6||

Is bound like a thief, in the City of Death. ||6||


ਲਾਖ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥

लाख अड्मबर बहुतु बिसथारा ॥

Laakh adambbar bahutu bisathaaraa ||

Hundreds of thousands of ostentatious shows and great expanses

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥

नाम बिना झूठे पासारा ॥७॥

Naam binaa jhoothe paasaaraa ||7||

- without the Naam, all these displays are false. ||7||


ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਇ ॥

हरि का नामु सोई जनु लेइ ॥

Hari kaa naamu soee janu lei ||

That humble being repeats the Name of the Lord,

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਇ ॥੮॥੧੦॥

करि किरपा नानक जिसु देइ ॥८॥१०॥

Kari kirapaa naanak jisu dei ||8||10||

O Nanak, whom the Lord blesses with His Mercy. ||8||10||

ਆਦਿ ਮਧਿ ਜੋ ਅੰਤਿ ਨਿਬਾਹੈ ॥

आदि मधि जो अंति निबाहै ॥

Aadi madhi jo antti nibaahai ||

The one who shall stand by me in the beginning, in the middle and in the end,

ਸੋ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਚਾਹੈ ॥੧॥

सो साजनु मेरा मनु चाहै ॥१॥

So saajanu meraa manu chaahai ||1||

my mind longs for that Friend. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਚਾਲੈ ॥

हरि की प्रीति सदा संगि चालै ॥

Hari kee preeti sadaa sanggi chaalai ||

The Lord's Love goes with us forever.

ਦਇਆਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

दइआल पुरख पूरन प्रतिपालै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Daiaal purakh pooran prtipaalai ||1|| rahaau ||

The Perfect and Merciful Lord cherishes all. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਿਨਸਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

बिनसत नाही छोडि न जाइ ॥

Binasat naahee chhodi na jaai ||

He shall never perish, and He shall never abandon me.

ਜਹ ਪੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥

जह पेखा तह रहिआ समाइ ॥२॥

Jah pekhaa tah rahiaa samaai ||2||

Wherever I look, there I see Him pervading and permeating. ||2||


ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਤਾ ॥

सुंदरु सुघड़ु चतुरु जीअ दाता ॥

Sunddaru sugha(rr)u chaturu jeea daataa ||

He is Beautiful, All-knowing, the most Clever, the Giver of life.

ਭਾਈ ਪੂਤੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਾਤਾ ॥੩॥

भाई पूतु पिता प्रभु माता ॥३॥

Bhaaee pootu pitaa prbhu maataa ||3||

God is my Brother, Son, Father and Mother. ||3||


ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

जीवन प्रान अधार मेरी रासि ॥

Jeevan praan adhaar meree raasi ||

He is the Support of the breath of life; He is my Wealth.

ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਕਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਵਾਸਿ ॥੪॥

प्रीति लाई करि रिदै निवासि ॥४॥

Preeti laaee kari ridai nivaasi ||4||

Abiding within my heart, He inspires me to enshrine love for Him. ||4||


ਮਾਇਆ ਸਿਲਕ ਕਾਟੀ ਗੋਪਾਲਿ ॥

माइआ सिलक काटी गोपालि ॥

Maaiaa silak kaatee gopaali ||

The Lord of the World has cut away the noose of Maya.

ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਲੀਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ॥੫॥

करि अपुना लीनो नदरि निहालि ॥५॥

Kari apunaa leeno nadari nihaali ||5||

He has made me His own, blessing me with His Glance of Grace. ||5||


ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ॥

सिमरि सिमरि काटे सभि रोग ॥

Simari simari kaate sabhi rog ||

Remembering, remembering Him in meditation, all diseases are healed.

ਚਰਣ ਧਿਆਨ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗ ॥੬॥

चरण धिआन सरब सुख भोग ॥६॥

Chara(nn) dhiaan sarab sukh bhog ||6||

Meditating on His Feet, all comforts are enjoyed. ||6||


ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਵਤਨੁ ਨਿਤ ਬਾਲਾ ॥

पूरन पुरखु नवतनु नित बाला ॥

Pooran purakhu navatanu nit baalaa ||

The Perfect Primal Lord is Ever-fresh and Ever-young.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੭॥

हरि अंतरि बाहरि संगि रखवाला ॥७॥

Hari anttari baahari sanggi rakhavaalaa ||7||

The Lord is with me, inwardly and outwardly, as my Protector. ||7||


ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੀਨ ॥

कहु नानक हरि हरि पदु चीन ॥

Kahu naanak hari hari padu cheen ||

Says Nanak, that devotee who realizes the state of the Lord, Har, Har,

ਸਰਬਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤ ਕਉ ਦੀਨ ॥੮॥੧੧॥

सरबसु नामु भगत कउ दीन ॥८॥११॥

Sarabasu naamu bhagat kau deen ||8||11||

is blessed with the treasure of the Naam. ||8||11||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਰੰਗੋ ॥

नाराइण हरि रंग रंगो ॥

Naaraai(nn) hari rangg ranggo ||

Dye yourself in the color of the Lord's Love.

ਜਪਿ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਏਕ ਮੰਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जपि जिहवा हरि एक मंगो ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Japi jihavaa hari ek manggo ||1|| rahaau ||

Chant the Name of the One Lord with your tongue, and ask for Him alone. ||1|| Pause ||


ਤਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਭਜੋ ॥

तजि हउमै गुर गिआन भजो ॥

Taji haumai gur giaan bhajo ||

Renounce your ego, and dwell upon the spiritual wisdom of the Guru.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮ ਲਿਖਿਓ ॥੧॥

मिलि संगति धुरि करम लिखिओ ॥१॥

Mili sanggati dhuri karam likhio ||1||

Those who have such pre-ordained destiny, join the Sangat, the Holy Congregation. ||1||


ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਗਇਓ ॥

जो दीसै सो संगि न गइओ ॥

Jo deesai so sanggi na gaio ||

Whatever you see, shall not go with you.

ਸਾਕਤੁ ਮੂੜੁ ਲਗੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਇਓ ॥੨॥

साकतु मूड़ु लगे पचि मुइओ ॥२॥

Saakatu moo(rr)u lage pachi muio ||2||

The foolish, faithless cynics are attached - they waste away and die. ||2||


ਮੋਹਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਓ ॥

मोहन नामु सदा रवि रहिओ ॥

Mohan naamu sadaa ravi rahio ||

The Name of the Fascinating Lord is all-pervading forever.

ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹਿਓ ॥੩॥

कोटि मधे किनै गुरमुखि लहिओ ॥३॥

Koti madhe kinai guramukhi lahio ||3||

Among millions, how rare is that Gurmukh who attains the Name. ||3||


ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਨਮੋ ਨਮੋ ॥

हरि संतन करि नमो नमो ॥

Hari santtan kari namo namo ||

Greet the Lord's Saints humbly, with deep respect.

ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਅਤੁਲੁ ਸੁਖੋ ॥੪॥

नउ निधि पावहि अतुलु सुखो ॥४॥

Nau nidhi paavahi atulu sukho ||4||

You shall obtain the nine treasures, and receive infinite peace. ||4||


ਨੈਨ ਅਲੋਵਉ ਸਾਧ ਜਨੋ ॥

नैन अलोवउ साध जनो ॥

Nain alovau saadh jano ||

With your eyes, behold the holy people;

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਧੋ ॥੫॥

हिरदै गावहु नाम निधो ॥५॥

Hiradai gaavahu naam nidho ||5||

In your heart, sing the treasure of the Naam. ||5||


ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੋ ॥

काम क्रोध लोभु मोहु तजो ॥

Kaam krodh lobhu mohu tajo ||

Abandon sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਹੁ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਓ ॥੬॥

जनम मरन दुहु ते रहिओ ॥६॥

Janam maran duhu te rahio ||6||

Thus you shall be rid of both birth and death. ||6||


ਦੂਖੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਮਿਟਿਓ ॥

दूखु अंधेरा घर ते मिटिओ ॥

Dookhu anddheraa ghar te mitio ||

Pain and darkness shall depart from your home,

ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਓ ਦੀਪ ਬਲਿਓ ॥੭॥

गुरि गिआनु द्रिड़ाइओ दीप बलिओ ॥७॥

Guri giaanu dri(rr)aaio deep balio ||7||

When the Guru implants spiritual wisdom within you, and lights that lamp. ||7||


ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸੋ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਓ ॥

जिनि सेविआ सो पारि परिओ ॥

Jini seviaa so paari pario ||

One who serves the Lord crosses over to the other side.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਿਓ ॥੮॥੧॥੧੩॥

जन नानक गुरमुखि जगतु तरिओ ॥८॥१॥१३॥

Jan naanak guramukhi jagatu tario ||8||1||13||

O servant Nanak, the Gurmukh saves the world. ||8||1||13||

Mahalaa 5 gau(rr)ee ||

Fifth Mehl, Gauree:

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਭਰਮ ਗਏ ॥

हरि हरि गुरु गुरु करत भरम गए ॥

Hari hari guru guru karat bharam gae ||

Dwelling upon the Lord, Har, Har, and the Guru, the Guru, my doubts have been dispelled.

ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मेरै मनि सभि सुख पाइओ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Merai mani sabhi sukh paaio ||1|| rahaau ||

My mind has obtained all comforts. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਲਤੋ ਜਲਤੋ ਤਉਕਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਸੀਤਲਾਇਓ ॥੧॥

बलतो जलतो तउकिआ गुर चंदनु सीतलाइओ ॥१॥

Balato jalato taukiaa gur chanddanu seetalaaio ||1||

I was burning, on fire, and the Guru poured water on me; He is cooling and soothing, like the sandalwood tree. ||1||


ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦੀਪਾਇਓ ॥੨॥

अगिआन अंधेरा मिटि गइआ गुर गिआनु दीपाइओ ॥२॥

Agiaan anddheraa miti gaiaa gur giaanu deepaaio ||2||

The darkness of ignorance has been dispelled; the Guru has lit the lamp of spiritual wisdom. ||2||


ਪਾਵਕੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਗਹਰੋ ਚਰਿ ਸੰਤਨ ਨਾਵ ਤਰਾਇਓ ॥੩॥

पावकु सागरु गहरो चरि संतन नाव तराइओ ॥३॥

Paavaku saagaru gaharo chari santtan naav taraaio ||3||

The ocean of fire is so deep; the Saints have crossed over, in the boat of the Lord's Name. ||3||


ਨਾ ਹਮ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਧਰਮ ਸੁਚ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਗਹਿ ਭੁਜਾ ਆਪਾਇਓ ॥੪॥

ना हम करम न धरम सुच प्रभि गहि भुजा आपाइओ ॥४॥

Naa ham karam na dharam such prbhi gahi bhujaa aapaaio ||4||

I have no good karma; I have no Dharmic faith or purity. But God has taken me by the arm, and made me His own. ||4||


ਭਉ ਖੰਡਨੁ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੋ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇਓ ॥੫॥

भउ खंडनु दुख भंजनो भगति वछल हरि नाइओ ॥५॥

Bhau khanddanu dukh bhanjjano bhagati vachhal hari naaio ||5||

The Destroyer of fear, the Dispeller of pain, the Lover of His Saints - these are the Names of the Lord. ||5||


ਅਨਾਥਹ ਨਾਥ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦੀਨ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਿਥ ਸੰਤ ਓਟਾਇਓ ॥੬॥

अनाथह नाथ क्रिपाल दीन सम्रिथ संत ओटाइओ ॥६॥

Anaathah naath kripaal deen sammrith santt otaaio ||6||

He is the Master of the masterless, Merciful to the meek, All-powerful, the Support of His Saints. ||6||


ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ਕੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਓ ॥੭॥

निरगुनीआरे की बेनती देहु दरसु हरि राइओ ॥७॥

Niraguneeaare kee benatee dehu darasu hari raaio ||7||

I am worthless - I offer this prayer, O my Lord King: ""Please, grant me the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan."" ||7||


ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਨਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਇਓ ॥੮॥੨॥੧੪॥

नानक सरनि तुहारी ठाकुर सेवकु दुआरै आइओ ॥८॥२॥१४॥

Naanak sarani tuhaaree thaakur sevaku duaarai aaio ||8||2||14||

Nanak has come to Your Sanctuary, O my Lord and Master; Your servant has come to Your Door. ||8||2||14||

ਰੰਗ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਭੋਗਾ ਇਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਅੰਧ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥੧॥

रंग संगि बिखिआ के भोगा इन संगि अंध न जानी ॥१॥

Rangg sanggi bikhiaa ke bhogaa in sanggi anddh na jaanee ||1||

He is immersed in the enjoyment of corrupt pleasures; engrossed in them, the blind fool does not understand. ||1||


ਹਉ ਸੰਚਉ ਹਉ ਖਾਟਤਾ ਸਗਲੀ ਅਵਧ ਬਿਹਾਨੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ संचउ हउ खाटता सगली अवध बिहानी ॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau sancchau hau khaatataa sagalee avadh bihaanee || rahaau ||

ਹਉ ਸੂਰਾ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਹਉ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਝਹਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ॥੨॥

हउ सूरा परधानु हउ को नाही मुझहि समानी ॥२॥

Hau sooraa paradhaanu hau ko naahee mujhahi samaanee ||2||

"I am a hero, I am famous and distinguished; no one is equal to me." ||2||


ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤ ਅਚਾਰ ਕੁਲੀਨਾ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਮਾਨੀ ॥੩॥

जोबनवंत अचार कुलीना मन महि होइ गुमानी ॥३॥

Jobanavantt achaar kuleenaa man mahi hoi gumaanee ||3||

"I am young, cultured, and born of a good family." In his mind, he is proud and arrogant like this. ||3||


ਜਿਉ ਉਲਝਾਇਓ ਬਾਧ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਮਰਤਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਸਰਾਨੀ ॥੪॥

जिउ उलझाइओ बाध बुधि का मरतिआ नही बिसरानी ॥४॥

Jiu ulajhaaio baadh budhi kaa maratiaa nahee bisaraanee ||4||

He is trapped by his false intellect, and he does not forget this until he dies. ||4||


ਭਾਈ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸਖੇ ਪਾਛੇ ਤਿਨਹੂ ਕਉ ਸੰਪਾਨੀ ॥੫॥

भाई मीत बंधप सखे पाछे तिनहू कउ स्मपानी ॥५॥

Bhaaee meet banddhap sakhe paachhe tinahoo kau samppaanee ||5||

Brothers, friends, relatives and companions who live after him - he entrusts his wealth to them. ||5||


ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਮਨੁ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਨੀ ॥੬॥

जितु लागो मनु बासना अंति साई प्रगटानी ॥६॥

Jitu laago manu baasanaa antti saaee prgataanee ||6||

That desire, to which the mind is attached, at the last moment, becomes manifest. ||6||


ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਸੁਚਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਇਹ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧਾਨੀ ॥੭॥

अह्मबुधि सुचि करम करि इह बंधन बंधानी ॥७॥

Ahambbudhi suchi karam kari ih banddhan banddhaanee ||7||

He may perform religious deeds, but his mind is egotistical, and he is bound by these bonds. ||7||


ਦਇਆਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਦਸਾਨੀ ॥੮॥੩॥੧੫॥੪੪॥ ਜੁਮਲਾ

सुणि नाह प्रभू जीउ एकलड़ी बन माहे ॥

Su(nn)i naah prbhoo jeeu ekala(rr)ee ban maahe ||

Hear me, O my Dear Husband God - I am all alone in the wilderness.

ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰੈਗੀ ਨਾਹ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥

किउ धीरैगी नाह बिना प्रभ वेपरवाहे ॥

Kiu dheeraigee naah binaa prbh veparavaahe ||

How can I find comfort without You, O my Carefree Husband God?

ਧਨ ਨਾਹ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਬਿਖਮ ਰੈਣਿ ਘਣੇਰੀਆ ॥

धन नाह बाझहु रहि न साकै बिखम रैणि घणेरीआ ॥

Dhan naah baajhahu rahi na saakai bikham rai(nn)i gha(nn)ereeaa ||

The soul-bride cannot live without her Husband; the night is so painful for her.

ਨਹ ਨੀਦ ਆਵੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮੇਰੀਆ ॥

नह नीद आवै प्रेमु भावै सुणि बेनंती मेरीआ ॥

Nah need aavai premu bhaavai su(nn)i benanttee mereeaa ||

Sleep does not come. I am in love with my Beloved. Please, listen to my prayer!

ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਏਕਲੜੀ ਕੁਰਲਾਏ ॥

बाझहु पिआरे कोइ न सारे एकलड़ी कुरलाए ॥

Baajhahu piaare koi na saare ekala(rr)ee kuralaae ||

Other than my Beloved, no one cares for me; I cry all alone in the wilderness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

नानक सा धन मिलै मिलाई बिनु प्रीतम दुखु पाए ॥१॥

Naanak saa dhan milai milaaee binu preetam dukhu paae ||1||

O Nanak, the bride meets Him when He causes her to meet Him; without her Beloved, she suffers in pain. ||1||


ਪਿਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਅੜੀ ਜੀਉ ਕਵਣੁ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥

पिरि छोडिअड़ी जीउ कवणु मिलावै ॥

Piri chhodia(rr)ee jeeu kava(nn)u milaavai ||

She is separated from her Husband Lord - who can unite her with Him?

ਰਸਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥

रसि प्रेमि मिली जीउ सबदि सुहावै ॥

Rasi premi milee jeeu sabadi suhaavai ||

Tasting His Love, she meets Him, through the Beautiful Word of His Shabad.

ਸਬਦੇ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੀਪਕ ਦੇਹ ਉਜਾਰੈ ॥

सबदे सुहावै ता पति पावै दीपक देह उजारै ॥

Sabade suhaavai taa pati paavai deepak deh ujaarai ||

Adorned with the Shabad, she obtains her Husband, and her body is illuminated with the lamp of spiritual wisdom.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੈ ॥

सुणि सखी सहेली साचि सुहेली साचे के गुण सारै ॥

Su(nn)i sakhee sahelee saachi suhelee saache ke gu(nn) saarai ||

Listen, O my friends and companions - she who is at peace dwells upon the True Lord and His True Praises.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਾ ਪਿਰਿ ਰਾਵੀ ਬਿਗਸੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

सतिगुरि मेली ता पिरि रावी बिगसी अम्रित बाणी ॥

Satiguri melee taa piri raavee bigasee ammmrit baa(nn)ee ||

Meeting the True Guru, she is ravished and enjoyed by her Husband Lord; she blossoms forth with the Ambrosial Word of His Bani.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਤਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਜਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥੨॥

नानक सा धन ता पिरु रावे जा तिस कै मनि भाणी ॥२॥

Naanak saa dhan taa piru raave jaa tis kai mani bhaa(nn)ee ||2||

O Nanak, the Husband Lord enjoys His bride when she is pleasing to His Mind. ||2||


ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਨੀਘਰੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੇ ॥

माइआ मोहणी नीघरीआ जीउ कूड़ि मुठी कूड़िआरे ॥

Maaiaa moha(nn)ee neeghareeaa jeeu koo(rr)i muthee koo(rr)iaare ||

Fascination with Maya made her homeless; the false are cheated by falsehood.

ਕਿਉ ਖੂਲੈ ਗਲ ਜੇਵੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

किउ खूलै गल जेवड़ीआ जीउ बिनु गुर अति पिआरे ॥

Kiu khoolai gal jeva(rr)eeaa jeeu binu gur ati piaare ||

How can the noose around her neck be untied, without the Most Beloved Guru?

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

हरि प्रीति पिआरे सबदि वीचारे तिस ही का सो होवै ॥

Hari preeti piaare sabadi veechaare tis hee kaa so hovai ||

One who loves the Beloved Lord, and reflects upon the Shabad, belongs to Him.

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਨਾਵਣ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

पुंन दान अनेक नावण किउ अंतर मलु धोवै ॥

Punn daan anek naava(nn) kiu anttar malu dhovai ||

How can giving donations to charities and countless cleansing baths wash off the filth within the heart?

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬੇਬਾਣੈ ॥

नाम बिना गति कोइ न पावै हठि निग्रहि बेबाणै ॥

Naam binaa gati koi na paavai hathi nigrhi bebaa(nn)ai ||

Without the Naam, no one attains salvation. Stubborn self-discipline and living in the wilderness are of no use at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਘਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

नानक सच घरु सबदि सिञापै दुबिधा महलु कि जाणै ॥३॥

Naanak sach gharu sabadi si(ny)aapai dubidhaa mahalu ki jaa(nn)ai ||3||

O Nanak, the home of Truth is attained through the Shabad. How can the Mansion of His Presence be known through duality? ||3||


ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ॥

तेरा नामु सचा जीउ सबदु सचा वीचारो ॥

Teraa naamu sachaa jeeu sabadu sachaa veechaaro ||

True is Your Name, O Dear Lord; True is contemplation of Your Shabad.

ਤੇਰਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਜੀਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੋ ॥

तेरा महलु सचा जीउ नामु सचा वापारो ॥

Teraa mahalu sachaa jeeu naamu sachaa vaapaaro ||

True is the Mansion of Your Presence, O Dear Lord, and True is trade in Your Name.

ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੋ ॥

नाम का वापारु मीठा भगति लाहा अनदिनो ॥

Naam kaa vaapaaru meethaa bhagati laahaa anadino ||

Trade in Your Name is very sweet; the devotees earn this profit night and day.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੋ ॥

तिसु बाझु वखरु कोइ न सूझै नामु लेवहु खिनु खिनो ॥

Tisu baajhu vakharu koi na soojhai naamu levahu khinu khino ||

Other than this, I can think of no other merchandise. So chant the Naam each and every moment.

ਪਰਖਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

परखि लेखा नदरि साची करमि पूरै पाइआ ॥

Parakhi lekhaa nadari saachee karami poorai paaiaa ||

The account is read; by the Grace of the True Lord and good karma, the Perfect Lord is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक नामु महा रसु मीठा गुरि पूरै सचु पाइआ ॥४॥२॥

Naanak naamu mahaa rasu meethaa guri poorai sachu paaiaa ||4||2||

O Nanak, the Nectar of the Name is so sweet. Through the Perfect True Guru, it is obtained. ||4||2||

ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਰੀ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਕਿਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

पिर बिनु खरी निमाणी जीउ बिनु पिर किउ जीवा मेरी माई ॥

Pir binu kharee nimaa(nn)ee jeeu binu pir kiu jeevaa meree maaee ||

Without my Husband, I am utterly dishonored. Without my Husband Lord, how can I live, O my mother?

ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਤਨਿ ਨ ਸੁਹਾਈ ॥

पिर बिनु नीद न आवै जीउ कापड़ु तनि न सुहाई ॥

Pir binu need na aavai jeeu kaapa(rr)u tani na suhaaee ||

Without my Husband, sleep does not come, and my body is not adorned with my bridal dress.

ਕਾਪਰੁ ਤਨਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ਜਾ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥

कापरु तनि सुहावै जा पिर भावै गुरमती चितु लाईऐ ॥

Kaaparu tani suhaavai jaa pir bhaavai guramatee chitu laaeeai ||

The bridal dress looks beautiful upon my body, when I am pleasing to my Husband Lord. Following the Guru's Teachings, my consciousness is focused on Him.

ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥

सदा सुहागणि जा सतिगुरु सेवे गुर कै अंकि समाईऐ ॥

Sadaa suhaaga(nn)i jaa satiguru seve gur kai ankki samaaeeai ||

I become His happy soul-bride forever, when I serve the True Guru; I sit in the Lap of the Guru.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੇਲਾ ਤਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੀ ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥

गुर सबदै मेला ता पिरु रावी लाहा नामु संसारे ॥

Gur sabadai melaa taa piru raavee laahaa naamu sanssaare ||

Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the soul-bride meets her Husband Lord, who ravishes and enjoys her. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the only profit in this world.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਨਾਹ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੇ ॥੧॥

नानक कामणि नाह पिआरी जा हरि के गुण सारे ॥१॥

Naanak kaama(nn)i naah piaaree jaa hari ke gu(nn) saare ||1||

O Nanak, the soul-bride is loved by her Husband, when she dwells upon the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||


ਸਾ ਧਨ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੇ ਜੀਉ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

सा धन रंगु माणे जीउ आपणे नालि पिआरे ॥

Saa dhan ranggu maa(nn)e jeeu aapa(nn)e naali piaare ||

The soul-bride enjoys the Love of her Beloved.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਜੀਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

अहिनिसि रंगि राती जीउ गुर सबदु वीचारे ॥

Ahinisi ranggi raatee jeeu gur sabadu veechaare ||

Imbued with His Love night and day, she contemplates the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

गुर सबदु वीचारे हउमै मारे इन बिधि मिलहु पिआरे ॥

Gur sabadu veechaare haumai maare in bidhi milahu piaare ||

Contemplating the Guru's Shabad, she conquers her ego, and in this way, she meets her Beloved.

ਸਾ ਧਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

सा धन सोहागणि सदा रंगि राती साचै नामि पिआरे ॥

Saa dhan sohaaga(nn)i sadaa ranggi raatee saachai naami piaare ||

She is the happy soul-bride of her Lord, who is forever imbued with the Love of the True Name of her Beloved.

ਅਪੁਨੇ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗਹੀਐ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥

अपुने गुर मिलि रहीऐ अम्रितु गहीऐ दुबिधा मारि निवारे ॥

Apune gur mili raheeai ammmritu gaheeai dubidhaa maari nivaare ||

Abiding in the Company of our Guru, we grasp the Ambrosial Nectar; we conquer and cast out our sense of duality.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰੇ ॥੨॥

नानक कामणि हरि वरु पाइआ सगले दूख विसारे ॥२॥

Naanak kaama(nn)i hari varu paaiaa sagale dookh visaare ||2||

O Nanak, the soul-bride attains her Husband Lord, and forgets all her pains. ||2||


ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਰਹੁ ਭੁਲੀ ਜੀਉ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

कामणि पिरहु भुली जीउ माइआ मोहि पिआरे ॥

Kaama(nn)i pirahu bhulee jeeu maaiaa mohi piaare ||

The soul-bride has forgotten her Husband Lord, because of love and emotional attachment to Maya.

ਝੂਠੀ ਝੂਠਿ ਲਗੀ ਜੀਉ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੇ ॥

झूठी झूठि लगी जीउ कूड़ि मुठी कूड़िआरे ॥

Jhoothee jhoothi lagee jeeu koo(rr)i muthee koo(rr)iaare ||

The false bride is attached to falsehood; the insincere one is cheated by insincerity.

ਕੂੜੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੇ ॥

कूड़ु निवारे गुरमति सारे जूऐ जनमु न हारे ॥

Koo(rr)u nivaare guramati saare jooai janamu na haare ||

She who drives out her falsehood, and acts according to the Guru's Teachings, does not lose her life in the gamble.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ॥

गुर सबदु सेवे सचि समावै विचहु हउमै मारे ॥

Gur sabadu seve sachi samaavai vichahu haumai maare ||

One who serves the Word of the Guru's Shabad is absorbed in the True Lord; she eradicates egotism from within.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ਐਸਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੀਗਾਰੋ ॥

हरि का नामु रिदै वसाए ऐसा करे सीगारो ॥

Hari kaa naamu ridai vasaae aisaa kare seegaaro ||

So let the Name of the Lord abide within your heart; decorate yourself in this way.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੋ ॥੩॥

नानक कामणि सहजि समाणी जिसु साचा नामु अधारो ॥३॥

Naanak kaama(nn)i sahaji samaa(nn)ee jisu saachaa naamu adhaaro ||3||

O Nanak, the soul-bride who takes the Support of the True Name is intuitively absorbed in the Lord. ||3||


ਮਿਲੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਰੀ ਨਿਮਾਣੀ ॥

मिलु मेरे प्रीतमा जीउ तुधु बिनु खरी निमाणी ॥

Milu mere preetamaa jeeu tudhu binu kharee nimaa(nn)ee ||

Meet me, O my Dear Beloved. Without You, I am totally dishonored.

ਮੈ ਨੈਣੀ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਣੀ ॥

मै नैणी नीद न आवै जीउ भावै अंनु न पाणी ॥

Mai nai(nn)ee need na aavai jeeu bhaavai annu na paa(nn)ee ||

Sleep does not come to my eyes, and I have no desire for food or water.

ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਭਾਵੈ ਮਰੀਐ ਹਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

पाणी अंनु न भावै मरीऐ हावै बिनु पिर किउ सुखु पाईऐ ॥

Paa(nn)ee annu na bhaavai mareeai haavai binu pir kiu sukhu paaeeai ||

I have no desire for food or water, and I am dying from the pain of separation. Without my Husband Lord, how can I find peace?

ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਉ ਬਿਨੰਤੀ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ॥

गुर आगै करउ बिनंती जे गुर भावै जिउ मिलै तिवै मिलाईऐ ॥

Gur aagai karau binanttee je gur bhaavai jiu milai tivai milaaeeai ||

I offer my prayers to the Guru; if it pleases the Guru, He shall unite me with Himself.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਲਏ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਏ ॥

आपे मेलि लए सुखदाता आपि मिलिआ घरि आए ॥

Aape meli lae sukhadaataa aapi miliaa ghari aae ||

The Giver of peace has united me with Himself; He Himself has come to my home to meet me.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक कामणि सदा सुहागणि ना पिरु मरै न जाए ॥४॥२॥

Naanak kaama(nn)i sadaa suhaaga(nn)i naa piru marai na jaae ||4||2||

O Nanak, the soul-bride is forever the Lord's favorite wife; her Husband Lord does not die, and He shall never leave. ||4||2||
