वडै भागि पाए हरि निरजोगा ॥२॥

Vadai bhaagi paae hari nirajogaa ||2||

By great good fortune, the detached, absolute Lord is obtained. ||2||


ਗੁਣ ਵਿਹੂਣ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥

गुण विहूण माइआ मलु धारी ॥

Gu(nn) vihoo(nn) maaiaa malu dhaaree ||

Those without virtue are stained by Maya's filth.

ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਣ ਜਨਮਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

विणु गुण जनमि मुए अहंकारी ॥३॥

Vi(nn)u gu(nn) janami mue ahankkaaree ||3||

Lacking virtue, the egotistical die, and suffer reincarnation. ||3||


ਸਰੀਰਿ ਸਰੋਵਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਟਿ ਕੀਏ ॥

सरीरि सरोवरि गुण परगटि कीए ॥

Sareeri sarovari gu(nn) paragati keee ||

The ocean of the body yields pearls of virtue.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੀਏ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੭॥

नानक गुरमुखि मथि ततु कढीए ॥४॥५॥५७॥

Naanak guramukhi mathi tatu kadheee ||4||5||57||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh churns this ocean, and discovers this essence. ||4||5||57||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀ ਨਾਮੋ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

नामु सुणी नामो मनि भावै ॥

Naamu su(nn)ee naamo mani bhaavai ||

I listen to the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the Naam is pleasing to my mind.

ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

वडै भागि गुरमुखि हरि पावै ॥१॥

Vadai bhaagi guramukhi hari paavai ||1||

By great good fortune, the Gurmukh obtains the Lord. ||1||


ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

नामु जपहु गुरमुखि परगासा ॥

Naamu japahu guramukhi paragaasaa ||

Chant the Naam, as Gurmukh, and be exalted.

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੈ ਧਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਭ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

नाम बिना मै धर नही काई नामु रविआ सभ सास गिरासा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Naam binaa mai dhar nahee kaaee naamu raviaa sabh saas giraasaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Naam, I have no other support; the Naam is woven into all my breaths and morsels of food. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਾਮੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੁਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ॥

नामै सुरति सुनी मनि भाई ॥

Naamai surati sunee mani bhaaee ||

The Naam illuminates my mind; listening to it, my mind is pleased.

ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੨॥

जो नामु सुनावै सो मेरा मीतु सखाई ॥२॥

Jo naamu sunaavai so meraa meetu sakhaaee ||2||

One who speaks the Naam - he alone is my friend and companion. ||2||


ਨਾਮਹੀਣ ਗਏ ਮੂੜ ਨੰਗਾ ॥

नामहीण गए मूड़ नंगा ॥

Naamahee(nn) gae moo(rr) nanggaa ||

Without the Naam, the fools depart naked.

ਪਚਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਖੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਤੰਗਾ ॥੩॥

पचि पचि मुए बिखु देखि पतंगा ॥३॥

Pachi pachi mue bikhu dekhi patanggaa ||3||

They burn away to death, chasing the poison of Maya, like the moth chasing the flame. ||3||


ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥

आपे थापे थापि उथापे ॥

Aape thaape thaapi uthaape ||

He Himself establishes, and, having established, disestablishes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ॥੪॥੬॥੫੮॥

नानक नामु देवै हरि आपे ॥४॥६॥५८॥

Naanak naamu devai hari aape ||4||6||58||

O Nanak, the Lord Himself bestows the Naam. ||4||6||58||

Guramukhi hari hari veli vadhaaee ||

The vine of the Lord's Name Har Har, has taken root in the Gurmukh.

ਫਲ ਲਾਗੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਕ ਰਸਾਈ ॥੧॥

फल लागे हरि रसक रसाई ॥१॥

Phal laage hari rasak rasaaee ||1||

It bears the fruit of the Lord; its taste is so tasty! ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥

हरि हरि नामु जपि अनत तरंगा ॥

Hari hari naamu japi anat taranggaa ||

Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in endless waves of joy.

ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जपि जपि नामु गुरमति सालाही मारिआ कालु जमकंकर भुइअंगा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Japi japi naamu guramati saalaahee maariaa kaalu jamakankkar bhuianggaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Chant and repeat the Naam; through the Guru's Teachings praise the Lord, and slay the horrible serpent of the Messenger of Death. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਖਾਈ ॥

हरि हरि गुर महि भगति रखाई ॥

Hari hari gur mahi bhagati rakhaaee ||

The Lord has implanted His devotional worship in the Guru.

ਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ਸਿਖ ਦੇਵੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੨॥

गुरु तुठा सिख देवै मेरे भाई ॥२॥

Guru tuthaa sikh devai mere bhaaee ||2||

When the Guru is pleased, He bestows it upon His Sikh, O my siblings of Destiny. ||2||


ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

हउमै करम किछु बिधि नही जाणै ॥

Haumai karam kichhu bidhi nahee jaa(nn)ai ||

One who acts in ego, knows nothing about the Way.

ਜਿਉ ਕੁੰਚਰੁ ਨਾਇ ਖਾਕੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

जिउ कुंचरु नाइ खाकु सिरि छाणै ॥३॥

Jiu kunccharu naai khaaku siri chhaa(nn)ai ||3||

He acts like an elephant, who takes a bath, and then throws dust on his head. ||3||


ਜੇ ਵਡ ਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਵਡ ਊਚੇ ॥

जे वड भाग होवहि वड ऊचे ॥

Je vad bhaag hovahi vad uche ||

If one's destiny is great and exalted,

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸੂਚੇ ॥੪॥੭॥੫੯॥

नानक नामु जपहि सचि सूचे ॥४॥७॥५९॥

Naanak naamu japahi sachi sooche ||4||7||59||

O Nanak, one chants the Naam, the Name of the Immaculate, True Lord. ||4||7||59||

My mind suffers hunger for the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਨਿਐ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੧॥

नामि सुनिऐ मनु त्रिपतै मेरे भाई ॥१॥

Naami suniai manu tripatai mere bhaaee ||1||

Hearing the Naam, my mind is satisfied, O my Siblings of Destiny. ||1||


ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਮੀਤਾ ॥

नामु जपहु मेरे गुरसिख मीता ॥

Naamu japahu mere gurasikh meetaa ||

Chant the Naam, O my friends, O GurSikhs.

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਖਹੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਚੀਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

नामु जपहु नामे सुखु पावहु नामु रखहु गुरमति मनि चीता ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Naamu japahu naame sukhu paavahu naamu rakhahu guramati mani cheetaa ||1|| rahaau ||

Chant the Naam, and through the Naam, obtain peace; through the Guru's Teachings, enshrine the Naam in your heart and mind. ||1|| Pause ||


ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਸਰਸਾ ॥

नामो नामु सुणी मनु सरसा ॥

Naamo naamu su(nn)ee manu sarasaa ||

Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the mind is in bliss.

ਨਾਮੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਗਸਾ ॥੨॥

नामु लाहा लै गुरमति बिगसा ॥२॥

Naamu laahaa lai guramati bigasaa ||2||

Reaping the profit of the Naam, through the Guru's Teachings, my soul has blossomed forth. ||2||


ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੁਸਟੀ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧਾ ॥

नाम बिना कुसटी मोह अंधा ॥

Naam binaa kusatee moh anddhaa ||

Without the Naam, the mortal is a leper, blinded by emotional attachment.

ਸਭ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਕਰਮ ਕੀਏ ਦੁਖੁ ਧੰਧਾ ॥੩॥

सभ निहफल करम कीए दुखु धंधा ॥३॥

Sabh nihaphal karam keee dukhu dhanddhaa ||3||

All his actions are fruitless; they lead only to painful entanglements. ||3||


ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਜਪੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥

हरि हरि हरि जसु जपै वडभागी ॥

Hari hari hari jasu japai vadabhaagee ||

The very fortunate ones chant the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੮॥੬੦॥

नानक गुरमति नामि लिव लागी ॥४॥८॥६०॥

Naanak guramati naami liv laagee ||4||8||60||

O Nanak, through the Guru's Teachings, one embraces love for the Naam. ||4||8||60||

ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਘਰੁ ੬ ਕੇ ੩ ॥

महला ४ रागु आसा घरु ६ के ३ ॥

Mahalaa 4 raagu aasaa gharu 6 ke 3 ||

Fourth Mehl, Raag Aasaa, 3 Of Sixth House :

ਹਥਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੰਤੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਥੋਥਰ ਵਾਜੈ ਬੇਨ ॥

हथि करि तंतु वजावै जोगी थोथर वाजै बेन ॥

Hathi kari tanttu vajaavai jogee thothar vaajai ben ||

You may pluck the strings with your hand, O Yogi, but your playing of the harp is in vain.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਭੇਨ ॥੧॥

गुरमति हरि गुण बोलहु जोगी इहु मनूआ हरि रंगि भेन ॥१॥

Guramati hari gu(nn) bolahu jogee ihu manooaa hari ranggi bhen ||1||

Under Guru's Instruction, chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, O Yogi, and this mind of yours shall be imbued with the Lord's Love. ||1||


ਜੋਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ॥

जोगी हरि देहु मती उपदेसु ॥

Jogee hari dehu matee upadesu ||

O Yogi, give your intellect the Teachings of the Lord.

ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਹਮ ਆਦੇਸੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जुगु जुगु हरि हरि एको वरतै तिसु आगै हम आदेसु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jugu jugu hari hari eko varatai tisu aagai ham aadesu ||1|| rahaau ||

The Lord, the One Lord, is pervading throughout all the ages; I humbly bow down to Him. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗਾਵਹਿ ਰਾਗ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਖੇਲ ॥

गावहि राग भाति बहु बोलहि इहु मनूआ खेलै खेल ॥

Gaavahi raag bhaati bahu bolahi ihu manooaa khelai khel ||

You sing in so many Ragas and harmonies, and you talk so much, but this mind of yours is only playing a game.

ਜੋਵਹਿ ਕੂਪ ਸਿੰਚਨ ਕਉ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਉਠਿ ਬੈਲ ਗਏ ਚਰਿ ਬੇਲ ॥੨॥

जोवहि कूप सिंचन कउ बसुधा उठि बैल गए चरि बेल ॥२॥

Jovahi koop sincchan kau basudhaa uthi bail gae chari bel ||2||

You work the well and irrigate the fields, but the oxen have already left to graze in the jungle. ||2||


ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਮ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਮੈ ਹਰਿਆ ਖੇਤੁ ॥

काइआ नगर महि करम हरि बोवहु हरि जामै हरिआ खेतु ॥

Kaaiaa nagar mahi karam hari bovahu hari jaamai hariaa khetu ||

In the field of the body, plant the Lord's Name, and the Lord will sprout there, like a lush green field.

ਮਨੂਆ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਬੈਲੁ ਮਨੁ ਜੋਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿੰਚਹੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜੇਤੁ ॥੩॥

मनूआ असथिरु बैलु मनु जोवहु हरि सिंचहु गुरमति जेतु ॥३॥

Manooaa asathiru bailu manu jovahu hari sincchahu guramati jetu ||3||

O mortal, hook up your unstable mind like an ox, and irrigate your fields with the Lord's Name, through the Guru's Teachings. ||3||


ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਜੋ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਚੇਲ ॥

जोगी जंगम स्रिसटि सभ तुमरी जो देहु मती तितु चेल ॥

Jogee janggam srisati sabh tumaree jo dehu matee titu chel ||

The Yogis, the wandering Jangams, and all the world is Yours, O Lord. According to the wisdom which You give them, so do they follow their ways.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਪੇਲ ॥੪॥੯॥੬੧॥

जन नानक के प्रभ अंतरजामी हरि लावहु मनूआ पेल ॥४॥९॥६१॥

Jan naanak ke prbh anttarajaamee hari laavahu manooaa pel ||4||9||61||

O Lord God of servant Nanak, O Inner-knower, Searcher of hearts, please link my mind to You. ||4||9||61||

ਕਬ ਕੋ ਭਾਲੈ ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਤਾਲਾ ਕਬ ਕੋ ਬਜਾਵੈ ਰਬਾਬੁ ॥

कब को भालै घुंघरू ताला कब को बजावै रबाबु ॥

Kab ko bhaalai ghunggharoo taalaa kab ko bajaavai rabaabu ||

How long must one search for angle bells and cymbals, and how long must one play the guitar?

ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਬਾਰ ਖਿਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਉ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਮਾਰਉ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥

आवत जात बार खिनु लागै हउ तब लगु समारउ नामु ॥१॥

Aavat jaat baar khinu laagai hau tab lagu samaarau naamu ||1||

In the brief instant between coming and going, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||


ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਐਸੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥

मेरै मनि ऐसी भगति बनि आई ॥

Merai mani aisee bhagati bani aaee ||

Such is the devotional love which has been produced in my mind.

ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਜੈਸੇ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੀਨੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ हरि बिनु खिनु पलु रहि न सकउ जैसे जल बिनु मीनु मरि जाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau hari binu khinu palu rahi na sakau jaise jal binu meenu mari jaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Lord, I cannot live even for an instant, like the fish which dies without water. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਬ ਕੋਊ ਮੇਲੈ ਪੰਚ ਸਤ ਗਾਇਣ ਕਬ ਕੋ ਰਾਗ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਠਾਵੈ ॥

कब कोऊ मेलै पंच सत गाइण कब को राग धुनि उठावै ॥

Kab kou melai pancch sat gaai(nn) kab ko raag dhuni uthaavai ||

How long must one tune the five strings, and assemble the seven singers, and how long will they raise their voices in song?

ਮੇਲਤ ਚੁਨਤ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਚਸਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

मेलत चुनत खिनु पलु चसा लागै तब लगु मेरा मनु राम गुन गावै ॥२॥

Melat chunat khinu palu chasaa laagai tab lagu meraa manu raam gun gaavai ||2||

In the time it takes to select and assemble these musicians, a moment elapses, and my mind sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||


ਕਬ ਕੋ ਨਾਚੈ ਪਾਵ ਪਸਾਰੈ ਕਬ ਕੋ ਹਾਥ ਪਸਾਰੈ ॥

कब को नाचै पाव पसारै कब को हाथ पसारै ॥

Kab ko naachai paav pasaarai kab ko haath pasaarai ||

How long must one dance and stretch out one's feet, and how long must one reach out with one's hands?

ਹਾਥ ਪਾਵ ਪਸਾਰਤ ਬਿਲਮੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰੈ ॥੩॥

हाथ पाव पसारत बिलमु तिलु लागै तब लगु मेरा मनु राम सम्हारै ॥३॥

Haath paav pasaarat bilamu tilu laagai tab lagu meraa manu raam samhaarai ||3||

Stretching out one's hands and feet, there is a moment's delay; and then, my mind meditates on the Lord. ||3||


ਕਬ ਕੋਊ ਲੋਗਨ ਕਉ ਪਤੀਆਵੈ ਲੋਕਿ ਪਤੀਣੈ ਨਾ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

कब कोऊ लोगन कउ पतीआवै लोकि पतीणै ना पति होइ ॥

Kab kou logan kau pateeaavai loki patee(nn)ai naa pati hoi ||

How long must one satisfy the people, in order to obtain honor?

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਦ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਤਾ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੬੨॥

जन नानक हरि हिरदै सद धिआवहु ता जै जै करे सभु कोइ ॥४॥१०॥६२॥

Jan naanak hari hiradai sad dhiaavahu taa jai jai kare sabhu koi ||4||10||62||

O servant Nanak, meditate forever in your heart on the Lord, and then everyone will congratulate you. ||4||10||62||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥

सतसंगति मिलीऐ हरि साधू मिलि संगति हरि गुण गाइ ॥

Satasanggati mileeai hari saadhoo mili sanggati hari gu(nn) gaai ||

Join the Sat Sangat the Lord's True Congregation; joining the Company of the Holy sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਲਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

गिआन रतनु बलिआ घटि चानणु अगिआनु अंधेरा जाइ ॥१॥

Giaan ratanu baliaa ghati chaana(nn)u agiaanu anddheraa jaai ||1||

With the sparkling jewel of spiritual wisdom, the heart is illumined, and ignorance is dispelled. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਨਾਚਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥

हरि जन नाचहु हरि हरि धिआइ ॥

Hari jan naachahu hari hari dhiaai ||

O humble servant of the Lord, let your dancing be meditation on the Lord, Har, Har.

ਐਸੇ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਹਮ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਧੋਵਹ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ऐसे संत मिलहि मेरे भाई हम जन के धोवह पाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Aise santt milahi mere bhaaee ham jan ke dhovah paai ||1|| rahaau ||

If only I cold meet such Saints, O my Siblings of Destiny; I would wash the feet of such servants. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

हरि हरि नामु जपहु मन मेरे अनदिनु हरि लिव लाइ ॥

Hari hari naamu japahu man mere anadinu hari liv laai ||

Meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O my mind; night and day, center your consciousness on the Lord.

ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਇ ॥੨॥

जो इछहु सोई फलु पावहु फिरि भूख न लागै आइ ॥२॥

Jo ichhahu soee phalu paavahu phiri bhookh na laagai aai ||2||

You shall have the fruits of your desires, and you shall never feel hunger again. ||2||


ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥

आपे हरि अपर्मपरु करता हरि आपे बोलि बुलाइ ॥

Aape hari aparampparu karataa hari aape boli bulaai ||

The Infinite Lord Himself is the Creator; the Lord Himself speaks, and causes us to speak.

ਸੇਈ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਜਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਥਾਇ ॥੩॥

सेई संत भले तुधु भावहि जिन्ह की पति पावहि थाइ ॥३॥

Seee santt bhale tudhu bhaavahi jinh kee pati paavahi thaai ||3||

The Saints are good, who are pleasing to Your Will; their honor is approved by You. ||3||


ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਰਾਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਜਿਉ ਆਖੈ ਤਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ॥

नानकु आखि न राजै हरि गुण जिउ आखै तिउ सुखु पाइ ॥

Naanaku aakhi na raajai hari gu(nn) jiu aakhai tiu sukhu paai ||

Nanak is not satisfied by chanting the Lord's Glorious Praises; the more he chants them, the more he is at peace.

ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਦੀਏ ਹਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਵਣਜਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੬੩॥

भगति भंडार दीए हरि अपुने गुण गाहकु वणजि लै जाइ ॥४॥११॥६३॥

Bhagati bhanddaar deee hari apune gu(nn) gaahaku va(nn)aji lai jaai ||4||11||63||

The Lord Himself has bestowed the treasure of devotional love; His customers purchase virtues, and carry them home. ||4||11||63||

ਆਇਆ ਮਰਣੁ ਧੁਰਾਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਈਐ ॥

आइआ मरणु धुराहु हउमै रोईऐ ॥

Aaiaa mara(nn)u dhuraahu haumai roeeai ||

Death is ordained from the very beginning, and yet ego makes us cry.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਈਐ ॥੧॥

गुरमुखि नामु धिआइ असथिरु होईऐ ॥१॥

Guramukhi naamu dhiaai asathiru hoeeai ||1||

Meditating on the Naam, as Gurmukh, one becomes stable and steady. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ਚਲਣੁ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

गुर पूरे साबासि चलणु जाणिआ ॥

Gur poore saabaasi chala(nn)u jaa(nn)iaa ||

Blessed is the Perfect Guru, through whom the way of Death is known.

ਲਾਹਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

लाहा नामु सु सारु सबदि समाणिआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Laahaa naamu su saaru sabadi samaa(nn)iaa ||1|| rahaau ||

The sublime people earn the profit of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; they are absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||1|| Pause ||


ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਡੇਹ ਸਿ ਆਏ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

पूरबि लिखे डेह सि आए माइआ ॥

Poorabi likhe deh si aae maaiaa ||

The days of one's life are pre-ordained; they will come to their end, O mother.

ਚਲਣੁ ਅਜੁ ਕਿ ਕਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

चलणु अजु कि कल्हि धुरहु फुरमाइआ ॥२॥

Chala(nn)u aju ki kalhi dhurahu phuramaaiaa ||2||

One must depart, today or tomorrow, according to the Lord's Primal Order. ||2||


ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥

बिरथा जनमु तिना जिन्ही नामु विसारिआ ॥

Birathaa janamu tinaa jinhee naamu visaariaa ||

Useless are the lives of those, who have forgotten the Naam.

ਜੂਐ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਜਗਿ ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਾਰਿਆ ॥੩॥

जूऐ खेलणु जगि कि इहु मनु हारिआ ॥३॥

Jooai khela(nn)u jagi ki ihu manu haariaa ||3||

They play the game of chance in this world, and lose their mind. ||3||


ਜੀਵਣਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

जीवणि मरणि सुखु होइ जिन्हा गुरु पाइआ ॥

Jeeva(nn)i mara(nn)i sukhu hoi jinhaa guru paaiaa ||

Those who have found the Guru are at peace, in life and in death.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੬੪॥

नानक सचे सचि सचि समाइआ ॥४॥१२॥६४॥

Naanak sache sachi sachi samaaiaa ||4||12||64||

O Nanak, the true ones are truly absorbed into the True Lord. ||4||12||64||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

जनमु पदारथु पाइ नामु धिआइआ ॥

Janamu padaarathu paai naamu dhiaaiaa ||

Having obtained the treasure of this human birth, I meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੁਝਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥

गुर परसादी बुझि सचि समाइआ ॥१॥

Gur parasaadee bujhi sachi samaaiaa ||1||

By Guru's Grace, I understand, and I am absorbed into the True Lord. ||1||


ਜਿਨੑ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

जिन्ह धुरि लिखिआ लेखु तिन्ही नामु कमाइआ ॥

Jinh dhuri likhiaa lekhu tinhee naamu kamaaiaa ||

Those who have such pre-ordained destiny practice the Naam.

ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਮਹਲਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

दरि सचै सचिआर महलि बुलाइआ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dari sachai sachiaar mahali bulaaiaa ||1|| rahaau ||

The True Lord summons the truthful to the Mansion of His Presence. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

अंतरि नामु निधानु गुरमुखि पाईऐ ॥

Anttari naamu nidhaanu guramukhi paaeeai ||

Deep within is the treasure of the Naam; it is obtained by the Gurmukh.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

अनदिनु नामु धिआइ हरि गुण गाईऐ ॥२॥

Anadinu naamu dhiaai hari gu(nn) gaaeeai ||2||

Night and day, meditate on the Naam, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

अंतरि वसतु अनेक मनमुखि नही पाईऐ ॥

Anttari vasatu anek manamukhi nahee paaeeai ||

Deep within are infinite substances, but the self-willed manmukh does not find them.

ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥੩॥

हउमै गरबै गरबु आपि खुआईऐ ॥३॥

Haumai garabai garabu aapi khuaaeeai ||3||

In egotism and pride, the mortal's proud self consumes him. ||3||


ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਈਐ ॥

नानक आपे आपि आपि खुआईऐ ॥

Naanak aape aapi aapi khuaaeeai ||

O Nanak, his identity consumes his identical identity.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਸਚਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੬੫॥

गुरमति मनि परगासु सचा पाईऐ ॥४॥१३॥६५॥

Guramati mani paragaasu sachaa paaeeai ||4||13||65||

Through the Guru's Teachings, the mind is illumined, and meets the True Lord. ||4||13||65||

Hau anadinu hari naamu keeratanu karau ||

Night and day, I sing the Kirtan, the Praises of the Name of the Lord.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਤਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सतिगुरि मो कउ हरि नामु बताइआ हउ हरि बिनु खिनु पलु रहि न सकउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Satiguri mo kau hari naamu bataaiaa hau hari binu khinu palu rahi na sakau ||1|| rahaau ||

The True Guru has revealed to me the Name of the Lord; without the Lord, I cannot live, for a moment, even an instant. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਮਰੈ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੁ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਹਉ ਇਕੁ ਖਿਨੁ ॥

हमरै स्रवणु सिमरनु हरि कीरतनु हउ हरि बिनु रहि न सकउ हउ इकु खिनु ॥

Hamarai srva(nn)u simaranu hari keeratanu hau hari binu rahi na sakau hau iku khinu ||

My ears hear the Lord's Kirtan, and I contemplate Him; without the Lord, I cannot live, even for an instant.

ਜੈਸੇ ਹੰਸੁ ਸਰਵਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤੈਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ॥੧॥

जैसे हंसु सरवर बिनु रहि न सकै तैसे हरि जनु किउ रहै हरि सेवा बिनु ॥१॥

Jaise hanssu saravar binu rahi na sakai taise hari janu kiu rahai hari sevaa binu ||1||

As the swan cannot live without the lake, how can the Lord's slave live without serving Him? ||1||


ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਰਿਦ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਮੋਹ ਅਪਮਾਨ ॥

किनहूं प्रीति लाई दूजा भाउ रिद धारि किनहूं प्रीति लाई मोह अपमान ॥

Kinahoonn preeti laaee doojaa bhaau rid dhaari kinahoonn preeti laaee moh apamaan ||

Some enshrine love for duality in their hearts, and some pledge love for worldly attachments and ego.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਪਦ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੨॥੧੪॥੬੬॥

हरि जन प्रीति लाई हरि निरबाण पद नानक सिमरत हरि हरि भगवान ॥२॥१४॥६६॥

Hari jan preeti laaee hari nirabaa(nn) pad naanak simarat hari hari bhagavaan ||2||14||66||

The Lord's servant embraces love for the Lord and the state of Nirvaanaa; Nanak contemplates the Lord, the Lord God. ||2||14||66||


ਆਸਾਵਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

ਮਾਈ ਮੋਰੋ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

माई मोरो प्रीतमु रामु बतावहु री माई ॥

Maaee moro preetamu raamu bataavahu ree maaee ||

O mother, my mother, tell me about my Beloved Lord.

ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਉ ਜੈਸੇ ਕਰਹਲੁ ਬੇਲਿ ਰੀਝਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ हरि बिनु खिनु पलु रहि न सकउ जैसे करहलु बेलि रीझाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau hari binu khinu palu rahi na sakau jaise karahalu beli reejhaaee ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the Lord, I cannot live for a moment, even an instant; I love Him, like the camel loves the vine. ||1|| Pause ||


ਹਮਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਬਿਰਕਤੁ ਭਇਓ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨ ਮੀਤ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥

हमरा मनु बैराग बिरकतु भइओ हरि दरसन मीत कै ताई ॥

Hamaraa manu bairaag birakatu bhaio hari darasan meet kai taaee ||

My mind has become sad and distant, longing for the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, my Friend.

ਜੈਸੇ ਅਲਿ ਕਮਲਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤੈਸੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥

जैसे अलि कमला बिनु रहि न सकै तैसे मोहि हरि बिनु रहनु न जाई ॥१॥

Jaise ali kamalaa binu rahi na sakai taise mohi hari binu rahanu na jaaee ||1||

As the bumblebee cannot live without the lotus, I cannot live without the Lord. ||1||


ਰਾਖੁ ਸਰਣਿ ਜਗਦੀਸੁਰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਰਧਾ ਪੂਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥

राखु सरणि जगदीसुर पिआरे मोहि सरधा पूरि हरि गुसाई ॥

Raakhu sara(nn)i jagadeesur piaare mohi saradhaa poori hari gusaaee ||

Keep me under Your Protection, O Beloved Master of the Universe; fulfill my faith, O Lord of the World.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਅਨਦੁ ਹੋਤ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਨਿਮਖ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥੨॥੩੯॥੧੩॥੧੫॥੬੭॥

जन नानक कै मनि अनदु होत है हरि दरसनु निमख दिखाई ॥२॥३९॥१३॥१५॥६७॥

Jan naanak kai mani anadu hot hai hari darasanu nimakh dikhaaee ||2||39||13||15||67||

Servant Nanak's mind is filled with bliss, when he beholds the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, even for an instant. ||2||39||13||15||67||

जीवनो मै जीवनु पाइआ गुरमुखि भाए राम ॥

Jeevano mai jeevanu paaiaa guramukhi bhaae raam ||

Life - I have found real life, as Gurmukh, through His Love.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥

हरि नामो हरि नामु देवै मेरै प्रानि वसाए राम ॥

Hari naamo hari naamu devai merai praani vasaae raam ||

The Lord's Name - He has given me the Lord's Name, and enshrined it within my breath of life.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਸਾ ਦੂਖੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

हरि हरि नामु मेरै प्रानि वसाए सभु संसा दूखु गवाइआ ॥

Hari hari naamu merai praani vasaae sabhu sanssaa dookhu gavaaiaa ||

He has enshrined the Name of the Lord, Har, Har within my breath of life, and all my doubts and sorrows have departed.

ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

अदिसटु अगोचरु गुर बचनि धिआइआ पवित्र परम पदु पाइआ ॥

Adisatu agocharu gur bachani dhiaaiaa pavitr param padu paaiaa ||

I have meditated on the invisible and unapproachable Lord, through the Guru's Word, and I have obtained the pure, supreme status.

ਅਨਹਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਵਾਜੇ ਗਾਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

अनहद धुनि वाजहि नित वाजे गाई सतिगुर बाणी ॥

Anahad dhuni vaajahi nit vaaje gaaee satigur baa(nn)ee ||

The unstruck melody resounds, and the instruments ever vibrate, singing the Bani of the True Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥

नानक दाति करी प्रभि दातै जोती जोति समाणी ॥१॥

Naanak daati karee prbhi daatai jotee joti samaa(nn)ee ||1||

O Nanak, God the Great Giver has given me a gift; He has blended my light into the Light. ||1||


ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਏ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

मनमुखा मनमुखि मुए मेरी करि माइआ राम ॥

Manamukhaa manamukhi mue meree kari maaiaa raam ||

The self-willed manmukhs die in their self-willed stubbornness, declaring that the wealth of Maya is theirs.

ਖਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਾਵੈ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਮੜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

खिनु आवै खिनु जावै दुरगंध मड़ै चितु लाइआ राम ॥

Khinu aavai khinu jaavai duraganddh ma(rr)ai chitu laaiaa raam ||

They attach their consciousness to the foul-smelling pile of filth, which comes for a moment, and departs in an instant.

ਲਾਇਆ ਦੁਰਗੰਧ ਮੜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਕਸੁੰਭ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

लाइआ दुरगंध मड़ै चितु लागा जिउ रंगु कसु्मभ दिखाइआ ॥

Laaiaa duraganddh ma(rr)ai chitu laagaa jiu ranggu kasumbbh dikhaaiaa ||

They attach their consciousness to the foul-smelling pile of filth, which is transitory, like the fading color of the safflower.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਛਮਿ ਛਾਏ ਜਿਉ ਚਕੁ ਕੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਿਆਰਿ ਭਵਾਇਆ ॥

खिनु पूरबि खिनु पछमि छाए जिउ चकु कुम्हिआरि भवाइआ ॥

Khinu poorabi khinu pachhami chhaae jiu chaku kumhiaari bhavaaiaa ||

One moment, they are facing east, and the next instant, they are facing west; they continue spinning around, like the potter's wheel.

ਦੁਖੁ ਖਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਵਧਾਈ ॥

दुखु खावहि दुखु संचहि भोगहि दुख की बिरधि वधाई ॥

Dukhu khaavahi dukhu sancchahi bhogahi dukh kee biradhi vadhaaee ||

In sorrow, they eat, and in sorrow, they gather things and try to enjoy them, but they only increase their stores of sorrow.

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਤਰੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥

नानक बिखमु सुहेला तरीऐ जा आवै गुर सरणाई ॥२॥

Naanak bikhamu suhelaa tareeai jaa aavai gur sara(nn)aaee ||2||

O Nanak, one easily crosses over the terrifying world-ocean, when he comes to the Sanctuary of the Guru. ||2||


ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਨੀਕਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

मेरा ठाकुरो ठाकुरु नीका अगम अथाहा राम ॥

Meraa thaakuro thaakuru neekaa agam athaahaa raam ||

My Lord, my Lord Master is sublime, unapproachable and unfathomable.

ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜੀ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜੀ ਚਾਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਹਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

हरि पूजी हरि पूजी चाही मेरे सतिगुर साहा राम ॥

Hari poojee hari poojee chaahee mere satigur saahaa raam ||

The wealth of the Lord - I seek the wealth of the Lord, from my True Guru, the Divine Banker.

ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜੀ ਚਾਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਹੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

हरि पूजी चाही नामु बिसाही गुण गावै गुण भावै ॥

Hari poojee chaahee naamu bisaahee gu(nn) gaavai gu(nn) bhaavai ||

I seek the wealth of the Lord, to purchase the Naam; I sing and love the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

ਨੀਦ ਭੂਖ ਸਭ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਸੁੰਨੇ ਸੁੰਨਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

नीद भूख सभ परहरि तिआगी सुंने सुंनि समावै ॥

Need bhookh sabh parahari tiaagee sunne sunni samaavai ||

I have totally renounced sleep and hunger, and through deep meditation, I am absorbed into the Absolute Lord.

ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਭਾਤੀ ਆਵਹਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਹੇ ॥

वणजारे इक भाती आवहि लाहा हरि नामु लै जाहे ॥

Va(nn)ajaare ik bhaatee aavahi laahaa hari naamu lai jaahe ||

The traders of one kind come and take away the Name of the Lord as their profit.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥

नानक मनु तनु अरपि गुर आगै जिसु प्रापति सो पाए ॥३॥

Naanak manu tanu arapi gur aagai jisu praapati so paae ||3||

O Nanak, dedicate your mind and body to the Guru; one who is so destined, attains it. ||3||


ਰਤਨਾ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

रतना रतन पदारथ बहु सागरु भरिआ राम ॥

Ratanaa ratan padaarath bahu saagaru bhariaa raam ||

The great ocean is full of the treasures of jewels upon jewels.

ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਹਥਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

बाणी गुरबाणी लागे तिन्ह हथि चड़िआ राम ॥

Baa(nn)ee gurabaa(nn)ee laage tinh hathi cha(rr)iaa raam ||

Those who are committed to the Word of the Guru's Bani, see them come into their hands.

ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਹਥਿ ਚੜਿਆ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

गुरबाणी लागे तिन्ह हथि चड़िआ निरमोलकु रतनु अपारा ॥

Gurabaa(nn)ee laage tinh hathi cha(rr)iaa niramolaku ratanu apaaraa ||

This priceless, incomparable jewel comes into the hands of those who are committed to the Word of the Guru's Bani.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਤੋਲਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

हरि हरि नामु अतोलकु पाइआ तेरी भगति भरे भंडारा ॥

Hari hari naamu atolaku paaiaa teree bhagati bhare bhanddaaraa ||

They obtain the immeasurable Name of the Lord, Har, Har; their treasure is overflowing with devotional worship.

ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਵਿਰੋਲਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਇਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥

समुंदु विरोलि सरीरु हम देखिआ इक वसतु अनूप दिखाई ॥

Samunddu viroli sareeru ham dekhiaa ik vasatu anoop dikhaaee ||

I have churned the ocean of the body, and I have seen the incomparable thing come into view.

ਗੁਰ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਗੋੁਵਿੰਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੮॥

गुर गोविंदु गोविंदु गुरू है नानक भेदु न भाई ॥४॥१॥८॥

Gur govinddu gaovinddu guroo hai naanak bhedu na bhaaee ||4||1||8||

The Guru is God, and God is the Guru, O Nanak; there is no difference between the two, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||1||8||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਝਿਮਿ ਝਿਮੇ ਝਿਮਿ ਝਿਮਿ ਵਰਸੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

झिमि झिमे झिमि झिमि वरसै अम्रित धारा राम ॥

Jhimi jhime jhimi jhimi varasai ammmrit dhaaraa raam ||

Slowly, slowly, slowly, very slowly, the drops of Ambrosial Nectar trickle down.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

गुरमुखे गुरमुखि नदरी रामु पिआरा राम ॥

Guramukhe guramukhi nadaree raamu piaaraa raam ||

As Gurmukh, the Gurmukh beholds the Lord, the Beloved Lord.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

राम नामु पिआरा जगत निसतारा राम नामि वडिआई ॥

Raam naamu piaaraa jagat nisataaraa raam naami vadiaaee ||

The Name of the Lord, the Emancipator of the world, is dear to him; the Name of the Lord is his glory.

ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲਘਾਈ ॥

कलिजुगि राम नामु बोहिथा गुरमुखि पारि लघाई ॥

Kalijugi raam naamu bohithaa guramukhi paari laghaaee ||

In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Lord's Name is the boat, which carries the Gurmukh across.

ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥

हलति पलति राम नामि सुहेले गुरमुखि करणी सारी ॥

Halati palati raam naami suhele guramukhi kara(nn)ee saaree ||

This world, and the world hereafter, are adorned with the Lord's Name; the Gurmukh's lifestyle is the most excellent.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਤਿ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

नानक दाति दइआ करि देवै राम नामि निसतारी ॥१॥

Naanak daati daiaa kari devai raam naami nisataaree ||1||

O Nanak, bestowing His kindness, the Lord gives the gift of His emancipating Name. ||1||


ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਦੁਖ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਨਾਸ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

रामो राम नामु जपिआ दुख किलविख नास गवाइआ राम ॥

Raamo raam naamu japiaa dukh kilavikh naas gavaaiaa raam ||

I chant the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, which destroys my sorrows and erases my sins.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਚੈ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਮੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

गुर परचै गुर परचै धिआइआ मै हिरदै रामु रवाइआ राम ॥

Gur parachai gur parachai dhiaaiaa mai hiradai raamu ravaaiaa raam ||

Associating with the Guru, associating with the Guru, I practice meditation; I have enshrined the Lord within my heart.

ਰਵਿਆ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਆਏ ॥

रविआ रामु हिरदै परम गति पाई जा गुर सरणाई आए ॥

Raviaa raamu hiradai param gati paaee jaa gur sara(nn)aaee aae ||

I enshrined the Lord within my heart, and obtained the supreme status, when I came to the Sanctuary of the Guru.

ਲੋਭ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਨਾਵ ਡੁਬਦੀ ਨਿਕਲੀ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜਾਏ ॥

लोभ विकार नाव डुबदी निकली जा सतिगुरि नामु दिड़ाए ॥

Lobh vikaar naav dubadee nikalee jaa satiguri naamu di(rr)aae ||

My boat was sinking under the weight of greed and corruption, but it was uplifted when the True Guru implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me.

ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੀਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

जीअ दानु गुरि पूरै दीआ राम नामि चितु लाए ॥

Jeea daanu guri poorai deeaa raam naami chitu laae ||

The Perfect Guru has given me the gift of spiritual life, and I center my consciousness on the Lord's Name.

ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਏ ॥੨॥

आपि क्रिपालु क्रिपा करि देवै नानक गुर सरणाए ॥२॥

Aapi kripaalu kripaa kari devai naanak gur sara(nn)aae ||2||

The Merciful Lord Himself has mercifully given this gift to me; O Nanak, I take to the Sanctuary of the Guru. ||2||


ਬਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣੀ ਸਿਧਿ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥

बाणी राम नाम सुणी सिधि कारज सभि सुहाए राम ॥

Baa(nn)ee raam naam su(nn)ee sidhi kaaraj sabhi suhaae raam ||

Hearing the Bani of the Lord's Name, all my affairs were brought to perfection and embellished.

ਰੋਮੇ ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮਿ ਰੋਮੇ ਮੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਰਾਮ ॥

रोमे रोमि रोमि रोमे मै गुरमुखि रामु धिआए राम ॥

Rome romi romi rome mai guramukhi raamu dhiaae raam ||

With each and every hair, with each and every hair, as Gurmukh, I meditate on the Lord.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਕਾਈ ॥

राम नामु धिआए पवितु होइ आए तिसु रूपु न रेखिआ काई ॥

Raam naamu dhiaae pavitu hoi aae tisu roopu na rekhiaa kaaee ||

I meditate on the Lord's Name, and become pure; He has no form or shape.

ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਭ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੂਖ ਗਵਾਈ ॥

रामो रामु रविआ घट अंतरि सभ त्रिसना भूख गवाई ॥

Raamo raamu raviaa ghat anttari sabh trisanaa bhookh gavaaee ||

The Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, is permeating my heart deep within, and all of my desire and hunger has disappeared.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੋਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸਾ ॥

मनु तनु सीतलु सीगारु सभु होआ गुरमति रामु प्रगासा ॥

Manu tanu seetalu seegaaru sabhu hoaa guramati raamu prgaasaa ||

My mind and body are totally adorned with peace and tranquility; through the Guru's Teachings, the Lord has been revealed to me.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੩॥

नानक आपि अनुग्रहु कीआ हम दासनि दासनि दासा ॥३॥

Naanak aapi anugrhu keeaa ham daasani daasani daasaa ||3||

The Lord Himself has shown His kind mercy to Nanak; He has made me the slave of the slaves of His slaves. ||3||


ਜਿਨੀ ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂੜ ਅਭਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

जिनी रामो राम नामु विसारिआ से मनमुख मूड़ अभागी राम ॥

Jinee raamo raam naamu visaariaa se manamukh moo(rr) abhaagee raam ||

Those who forget the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, are foolish, unfortunate, self-willed manmukhs.

ਤਿਨ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਾਗੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

तिन अंतरे मोहु विआपै खिनु खिनु माइआ लागी राम ॥

Tin anttare mohu viaapai khinu khinu maaiaa laagee raam ||

Within, they are engrossed in emotional attachment; each and every moment, Maya clings to them.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਮੂੜ ਭਏ ਅਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਹ ਭਾਇਆ ॥

माइआ मलु लागी मूड़ भए अभागी जिन राम नामु नह भाइआ ॥

Maaiaa malu laagee moo(rr) bhae abhaagee jin raam naamu nah bhaaiaa ||

The filth of Maya clings to them, and they become unfortunate fools - they do not love the Lord's Name.

ਅਨੇਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੋਰਾਇਆ ॥

अनेक करम करहि अभिमानी हरि रामो नामु चोराइआ ॥

Anek karam karahi abhimaanee hari raamo naamu choraaiaa ||

The egotistical and proud perform all sorts of rituals, but they shy away from the Lord's Name.

ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਜਮ ਪੰਥੁ ਦੁਹੇਲਾ ਕਾਲੂਖਤ ਮੋਹ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥

महा बिखमु जम पंथु दुहेला कालूखत मोह अंधिआरा ॥

Mahaa bikhamu jam pantthu duhelaa kaalookhat moh anddhiaaraa ||

The path of Death is very arduous and painful; it is stained with the darkness of emotional attachment.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥

नानक गुरमुखि नामु धिआइआ ता पाए मोख दुआरा ॥४॥

Naanak guramukhi naamu dhiaaiaa taa paae mokh duaaraa ||4||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, and finds the gate of salvation. ||4||


ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਰਾਮ ॥

रामो राम नामु गुरू रामु गुरमुखे जाणै राम ॥

Raamo raam naamu guroo raamu guramukhe jaa(nn)ai raam ||

The Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, and the Lord Guru, are known by the Gurmukh.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਖਿਨੁ ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲੀ ਭਰਮਦਾ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ਰਾਮ ॥

इहु मनूआ खिनु ऊभ पइआली भरमदा इकतु घरि आणै राम ॥

Ihu manooaa khinu ubh paiaalee bharamadaa ikatu ghari aa(nn)ai raam ||

One moment, this mind is in the heavens, and the next, it is in the nether regions; the Guru brings the wandering mind back to one-pointedness.

ਮਨੁ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ਸਭ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਏ ॥

मनु इकतु घरि आणै सभ गति मिति जाणै हरि रामो नामु रसाए ॥

Manu ikatu ghari aa(nn)ai sabh gati miti jaa(nn)ai hari raamo naamu rasaae ||

When the mind returns to one-pointedness, one totally understands the value of salvation, and enjoys the subtle essence of the Lord's Name.

ਜਨ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਰਖੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਉਧਾਰਿ ਤਰਾਏ ॥

जन की पैज रखै राम नामा प्रहिलाद उधारि तराए ॥

Jan kee paij rakhai raam naamaa prhilaad udhaari taraae ||

The Lord's Name preserves the honor of His servant, as He preserved and emancipated Prahlaad.

ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਮੋ ਰਮੁ ਊਚਾ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਤਿਆ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

रामो रामु रमो रमु ऊचा गुण कहतिआ अंतु न पाइआ ॥

Raamo raamu ramo ramu uchaa gu(nn) kahatiaa anttu na paaiaa ||

So repeat continually the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam; chanting His Glorious Virtues, His limit cannot be found.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਭੀਨੇ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥

नानक राम नामु सुणि भीने रामै नामि समाइआ ॥५॥

Naanak raam naamu su(nn)i bheene raamai naami samaaiaa ||5||

Nanak is drenched in happiness, hearing the Name of the Lord; he is merged in the Name of the Lord. ||5||


ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਤਿਨ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਸਭ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

जिन अंतरे राम नामु वसै तिन चिंता सभ गवाइआ राम ॥

Jin anttare raam naamu vasai tin chinttaa sabh gavaaiaa raam ||

Those beings, whose minds are filled the Lord's Name, forsake all anxiety.

ਸਭਿ ਅਰਥਾ ਸਭਿ ਧਰਮ ਮਿਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

सभि अरथा सभि धरम मिले मनि चिंदिआ सो फलु पाइआ राम ॥

Sabhi arathaa sabhi dharam mile mani chinddiaa so phalu paaiaa raam ||

They obtain all wealth, and all Dharmic faith, and the fruits of their minds' desires.

ਮਨ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥

मन चिंदिआ फलु पाइआ राम नामु धिआइआ राम नाम गुण गाए ॥

Man chinddiaa phalu paaiaa raam naamu dhiaaiaa raam naam gu(nn) gaae ||

They obtain the fruits of their hearts' desires, meditating on the Lord's Name, and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord's Name.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਬੁਧਿ ਗਈ ਸੁਧਿ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

दुरमति कबुधि गई सुधि होई राम नामि मनु लाए ॥

Duramati kabudhi gaee sudhi hoee raam naami manu laae ||

Evil-mindedness and duality depart, and their understanding is enlightened. They attach their minds to the Name of the Lord.

ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਸਭੁ ਹੋਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ॥

सफलु जनमु सरीरु सभु होआ जितु राम नामु परगासिआ ॥

Saphalu janamu sareeru sabhu hoaa jitu raam naamu paragaasiaa ||

Their lives and bodies become totally blessed and fruitful; the Lord's Name illumines them.

ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਿਆ ॥੬॥

नानक हरि भजु सदा दिनु राती गुरमुखि निज घरि वासिआ ॥६॥

Naanak hari bhaju sadaa dinu raatee guramukhi nij ghari vaasiaa ||6||

O Nanak, by continually vibrating upon the Lord, day and night, the Gurmukhs abide in the home of the inner self. ||6||


ਜਿਨ ਸਰਧਾ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੀ ਤਿਨੑ ਦੂਜੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

जिन सरधा राम नामि लगी तिन्ह दूजै चितु न लाइआ राम ॥

Jin saradhaa raam naami lagee tinh doojai chitu na laaiaa raam ||

Those who place their faith in the Lord's Name, do not attach their consciousness to another.

ਜੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਭ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

जे धरती सभ कंचनु करि दीजै बिनु नावै अवरु न भाइआ राम ॥

Je dharatee sabh kancchanu kari deejai binu naavai avaru na bhaaiaa raam ||

Even if the entire earth were to be transformed into gold, and given to them, without the Naam, they love nothing else.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

राम नामु मनि भाइआ परम सुखु पाइआ अंति चलदिआ नालि सखाई ॥

Raam naamu mani bhaaiaa param sukhu paaiaa antti chaladiaa naali sakhaaee ||

The Lord's Name is pleasing to their minds, and they obtain supreme peace; when they depart in the end, it shall go with them as their support.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਧਨੁ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸੰਚੀ ਨਾ ਡੂਬੈ ਨਾ ਜਾਈ ॥

राम नाम धनु पूंजी संची ना डूबै ना जाई ॥

Raam naam dhanu poonjjee sancchee naa doobai naa jaaee ||

I have gathered the capital, the wealth of the Lord's Name; it does not sink, and does not depart.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

राम नामु इसु जुग महि तुलहा जमकालु नेड़ि न आवै ॥

Raam naamu isu jug mahi tulahaa jamakaalu ne(rr)i na aavai ||

The Lord's Name is the only true support in this age; the Messenger of Death does not draw near it.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੭॥

नानक गुरमुखि रामु पछाता करि किरपा आपि मिलावै ॥७॥

Naanak guramukhi raamu pachhaataa kari kirapaa aapi milaavai ||7||

O Nanak, the Gurmukhs recognize the Lord; in His Mercy, He unites them with Himself. ||7||


ਰਾਮੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤੇ ਸਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

रामो राम नामु सते सति गुरमुखि जाणिआ राम ॥

Raamo raam naamu sate sati guramukhi jaa(nn)iaa raam ||

True, True is the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam; the Gurmukh knows the Lord.

ਸੇਵਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

सेवको गुर सेवा लागा जिनि मनु तनु अरपि चड़ाइआ राम ॥

Sevako gur sevaa laagaa jini manu tanu arapi cha(rr)aaiaa raam ||

The Lord's servant is the one who commits himself to the Guru's service, and dedicates his mind and body as an offering to Him.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿਆ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਰਧਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਕ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥

मनु तनु अरपिआ बहुतु मनि सरधिआ गुर सेवक भाइ मिलाए ॥

Manu tanu arapiaa bahutu mani saradhiaa gur sevak bhaai milaae ||

He dedicates his mind and body to Him, placing great faith in Him; the Guru lovingly unites His servant with Himself.

ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥੁ ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਏ ॥

दीना नाथु जीआ का दाता पूरे गुर ते पाए ॥

Deenaa naathu jeeaa kaa daataa poore gur te paae ||

The Master of the meek, the Giver of souls, is obtained through the Perfect Guru.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਖੁ ਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਏਕੋ ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

गुरू सिखु सिखु गुरू है एको गुर उपदेसु चलाए ॥

Guroo sikhu sikhu guroo hai eko gur upadesu chalaae ||

The Guru's Sikh, and the Sikh's Guru, are one and the same; both spread the Guru's Teachings.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਤੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੮॥੨॥੯॥

राम नाम मंतु हिरदै देवै नानक मिलणु सुभाए ॥८॥२॥९॥

Raam naam manttu hiradai devai naanak mila(nn)u subhaae ||8||2||9||

The Mantra of the Lord's Name is enshrined within the heart, O Nanak, and we merge with the Lord so easily. ||8||2||9||

Aasaa, Chhant, Fourth Mehl, Second House:

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੂਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि करता दूख बिनासनु पतित पावनु हरि नामु जीउ ॥

Hari hari karataa dookh binaasanu patit paavanu hari naamu jeeu ||

The Creator Lord, Har, Har, is the Destroyer of distress; the Name of the Lord is the Purifier of sinners.

ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਭਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि सेवा भाई परम गति पाई हरि ऊतमु हरि हरि कामु जीउ ॥

Hari sevaa bhaaee param gati paaee hari utamu hari hari kaamu jeeu ||

One who lovingly serves the Lord, obtains the supreme status. Service to the Lord, Har, Har, is more exalted than anything.

ਹਰਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਜਪੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

हरि ऊतमु कामु जपीऐ हरि नामु हरि जपीऐ असथिरु होवै ॥

Hari utamu kaamu japeeai hari naamu hari japeeai asathiru hovai ||

Chanting the Name of the Lord is the most exalted occupation; chanting the Name of the Lord, one becomes immortal.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੋਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੋਵੈ ॥

जनम मरण दोवै दुख मेटे सहजे ही सुखि सोवै ॥

Janam mara(nn) dovai dukh mete sahaje hee sukhi sovai ||

The pains of both birth and death are eradicated, and one comes to sleep in peaceful ease.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि किरपा धारहु ठाकुर हरि जपीऐ आतम रामु जीउ ॥

Hari hari kirapaa dhaarahu thaakur hari japeeai aatam raamu jeeu ||

O Lord, O Lord and Master, shower Your Mercy upon me; within my mind, I chant the Name of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੂਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

हरि हरि करता दूख बिनासनु पतित पावनु हरि नामु जीउ ॥१॥

Hari hari karataa dookh binaasanu patit paavanu hari naamu jeeu ||1||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪੜੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਣਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

गुरमुखि हरि पड़ीऐ गुरमुखि हरि सुणीऐ हरि जपत सुणत दुखु जाइ जीउ ॥

Guramukhi hari pa(rr)eeai guramukhi hari su(nn)eeai hari japat su(nn)at dukhu jaai jeeu ||

As Gurmukh, read of the Lord; as Gurmukh, hear of the Lord. Chanting and listening to the Lord's Name, pain departs.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਨਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हरि हरि नामु जपिआ दुखु बिनसिआ हरि नामु परम सुखु पाइआ ॥

Hari hari naamu japiaa dukhu binasiaa hari naamu param sukhu paaiaa ||

Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, pains are removed. Through the Name of the Lord, supreme peace is obtained.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬਲਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

सतिगुर गिआनु बलिआ घटि चानणु अगिआनु अंधेरु गवाइआ ॥

Satigur giaanu baliaa ghati chaana(nn)u agiaanu anddheru gavaaiaa ||

The spiritual wisdom of the True Guru illumines the heart; this Light dispels the darkness of spiritual ignorance.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਨੀ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਜਿਨ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि नामु तिनी आराधिआ जिन मसतकि धुरि लिखि पाइ जीउ ॥

Hari hari naamu tinee aaraadhiaa jin masataki dhuri likhi paai jeeu ||

They alone meditate on the Lord's Name, Har, Har, upon whose foreheads such destiny is written.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

हरि हरि मनि भाइआ परम सुख पाइआ हरि लाहा पदु निरबाणु जीउ ॥

Hari hari mani bhaaiaa param sukh paaiaa hari laahaa padu nirabaa(nn)u jeeu ||

One whose mind loves the Lord, Har, Har, obtains supreme peace. He reaps the profit of the Lord's Name, the state of Nirvaanaa.

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि प्रीति लगाई हरि नामु सखाई भ्रमु चूका आवणु जाणु जीउ ॥

Hari preeti lagaaee hari naamu sakhaaee bhrmu chookaa aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u jeeu ||

He embraces love for the Lord, and the Lord's Name becomes his companion. His doubts, and his comings and goings are ended.

ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

आवण जाणा भ्रमु भउ भागा हरि हरि हरि गुण गाइआ ॥

Aava(nn) jaa(nn)aa bhrmu bhau bhaagaa hari hari hari gu(nn) gaaiaa ||

His comings and goings, doubts and fears come to an end, and he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, Har.

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਉਤਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

जनम जनम के किलविख दुख उतरे हरि हरि नामि समाइआ ॥

Janam janam ke kilavikh dukh utare hari hari naami samaaiaa ||

The sins and pains of countless incarnations are washed away, and he merges into the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

जिन हरि धिआइआ धुरि भाग लिखि पाइआ तिन सफलु जनमु परवाणु जीउ ॥

Jin hari dhiaaiaa dhuri bhaag likhi paaiaa tin saphalu janamu paravaa(nn)u jeeu ||

Those who are blessed by such pre-ordained destiny, meditate on the Lord, and their lives become fruitful and approved.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

ਜਿਨੑ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਗ ਜੀਉ ॥

जिन्ह हरि मीठ लगाना ते जन परधाना ते ऊतम हरि हरि लोग जीउ ॥

Jinh hari meeth lagaanaa te jan paradhaanaa te utam hari hari log jeeu ||

Celebrated are those people, unto whom the Lord seems sweet; how exalted are those people of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि नामु वडाई हरि नामु सखाई गुर सबदी हरि रस भोग जीउ ॥

Hari naamu vadaaee hari naamu sakhaaee gur sabadee hari ras bhog jeeu ||

The Lord's Name is their glorious greatness; the Lord's Name is their companion and helper. Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they enjoy the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਮਹਾ ਨਿਰਜੋਗ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हरि रस भोग महा निरजोग वडभागी हरि रसु पाइआ ॥

Hari ras bhog mahaa nirajog vadabhaagee hari rasu paaiaa ||

They enjoy the sublime essence of the Lord, and remain totally detached. By great good fortune, they obtain the sublime essence of the Lord.

ਸੇ ਧੰਨੁ ਵਡੇ ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਪੂਰੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

से धंनु वडे सत पुरखा पूरे जिन गुरमति नामु धिआइआ ॥

Se dhannu vade sat purakhaa poore jin guramati naamu dhiaaiaa ||

So very blessed and truly perfect are those, who through Guru's Instruction meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਰੇਣੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਪਗ ਸਾਧੂ ਮਨਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

जनु नानकु रेणु मंगै पग साधू मनि चूका सोगु विजोगु जीउ ॥

Janu naanaku re(nn)u manggai pag saadhoo mani chookaa sogu vijogu jeeu ||

Servant Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of the Holy; his mind is rid of sorrow and separation.

ਜਿਨੑ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਗ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੦॥

जिन्ह हरि मीठ लगाना ते जन परधाना ते ऊतम हरि हरि लोग जीउ ॥४॥३॥१०॥

Jinh hari meeth lagaanaa te jan paradhaanaa te utam hari hari log jeeu ||4||3||10||

Celebrated are those people, unto whom the Lord seems sweet; how exalted are those people of the Lord, Har, Har. ||4||3||10||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਰੀਰਾ ਪਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

सतजुगि सभु संतोख सरीरा पग चारे धरमु धिआनु जीउ ॥

Satajugi sabhu santtokh sareeraa pag chaare dharamu dhiaanu jeeu ||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, everyone embodied contentment and meditation; religion stood upon four feet.

ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

मनि तनि हरि गावहि परम सुखु पावहि हरि हिरदै हरि गुण गिआनु जीउ ॥

Mani tani hari gaavahi param sukhu paavahi hari hiradai hari gu(nn) giaanu jeeu ||

With mind and body, they sang of the Lord, and attained supreme peace. In their hearts was the spiritual wisdom of the Lord's Glorious Virtues.

ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥੁ ਸੋਭਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

गुण गिआनु पदारथु हरि हरि किरतारथु सोभा गुरमुखि होई ॥

Gu(nn) giaanu padaarathu hari hari kirataarathu sobhaa guramukhi hoee ||

Their wealth was the spiritual wisdom of the Lord's Glorious Virtues; the Lord was their success, and to live as Gurmukh was their glory.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

अंतरि बाहरि हरि प्रभु एको दूजा अवरु न कोई ॥

Anttari baahari hari prbhu eko doojaa avaru na koee ||

Inwardly and outwardly, they saw only the One Lord God; for them there was no other second.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि लिव लाई हरि नामु सखाई हरि दरगह पावै मानु जीउ ॥

Hari hari liv laaee hari naamu sakhaaee hari daragah paavai maanu jeeu ||

They centered their consciousness lovingly on the Lord, Har, Har. The Lord's Name was their companion, and in the Court of the Lord, they obtained honor.

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਭੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਰੀਰਾ ਪਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

सतजुगि सभु संतोख सरीरा पग चारे धरमु धिआनु जीउ ॥१॥

Satajugi sabhu santtokh sareeraa pag chaare dharamu dhiaanu jeeu ||1||

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, everyone embodied contentment and meditation; religion stood upon four feet. ||1||


ਤੇਤਾ ਜੁਗੁ ਆਇਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਤੁ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

तेता जुगु आइआ अंतरि जोरु पाइआ जतु संजम करम कमाइ जीउ ॥

Tetaa jugu aaiaa anttari joru paaiaa jatu sanjjam karam kamaai jeeu ||

Then came the Silver Age of Trayta Yuga; men's minds were ruled by power, and they practiced celibacy and self-discipline.

ਪਗੁ ਚਉਥਾ ਖਿਸਿਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਪਗ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

पगु चउथा खिसिआ त्रै पग टिकिआ मनि हिरदै क्रोधु जलाइ जीउ ॥

Pagu chauthaa khisiaa trai pag tikiaa mani hiradai krodhu jalaai jeeu ||

The fourth foot of religion dropped off, and three remained. Their hearts and minds were inflamed with anger.

ਮਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਸਲੋਧੁ ਨਿਰਪ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਲੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

मनि हिरदै क्रोधु महा बिसलोधु निरप धावहि लड़ि दुखु पाइआ ॥

Mani hiradai krodhu mahaa bisalodhu nirap dhaavahi la(rr)i dukhu paaiaa ||

Their hearts and minds were filled with the horribly poisonous essence of anger. The kings fought their wars and obtained only pain.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਮਤਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਲਗਾਨਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥

अंतरि ममता रोगु लगाना हउमै अहंकारु वधाइआ ॥

Anttari mamataa rogu lagaanaa haumai ahankkaaru vadhaaiaa ||

Their minds were afflicted with the illness of egotism, and their self-conceit and arrogance increased.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਮੇਰੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि क्रिपा धारी मेरै ठाकुरि बिखु गुरमति हरि नामि लहि जाइ जीउ ॥

Hari hari kripaa dhaaree merai thaakuri bikhu guramati hari naami lahi jaai jeeu ||

If my Lord, Har, Har, shows His Mercy, my Lord and Master eradicates the poison by the Guru's Teachings and the Lord's Name.

जुगु दुआपुरु आइआ भरमि भरमाइआ हरि गोपी कान्हु उपाइ जीउ ॥

Jugu duaapuru aaiaa bharami bharamaaiaa hari gopee kaanhu upaai jeeu ||

The Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga came, and people wandered in doubt. The Lord created the Gopis and Krishna.

ਤਪੁ ਤਾਪਨ ਤਾਪਹਿ ਜਗ ਪੁੰਨ ਆਰੰਭਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਕਿਰਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

तपु तापन तापहि जग पुंन आर्मभहि अति किरिआ करम कमाइ जीउ ॥

Tapu taapan taapahi jag punn aarambbhahi ati kiriaa karam kamaai jeeu ||

The penitents practiced penance, they offered sacred feasts and charity, and performed many rituals and religious rites.

ਕਿਰਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਪਗ ਦੁਇ ਖਿਸਕਾਇਆ ਦੁਇ ਪਗ ਟਿਕੈ ਟਿਕਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

किरिआ करम कमाइआ पग दुइ खिसकाइआ दुइ पग टिकै टिकाइ जीउ ॥

Kiriaa karam kamaaiaa pag dui khisakaaiaa dui pag tikai tikaai jeeu ||

They performed many rituals and religious rites; two legs of religion dropped away, and only two legs remained.

ਮਹਾ ਜੁਧ ਜੋਧ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੑੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚੈ ਪਚਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

महा जुध जोध बहु कीन्हे विचि हउमै पचै पचाइ जीउ ॥

Mahaa judh jodh bahu keenhe vichi haumai pachai pachaai jeeu ||

So many heroes waged great wars; in their egos they were ruined, and they ruined others as well.

ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਲੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

दीन दइआलि गुरु साधु मिलाइआ मिलि सतिगुर मलु लहि जाइ जीउ ॥

Deen daiaali guru saadhu milaaiaa mili satigur malu lahi jaai jeeu ||

The Lord, Compassionate to the poor, led them to meet the Holy Guru. Meeting the True Guru, their filth is washed away.

ਜੁਗੁ ਦੁਆਪੁਰੁ ਆਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਪੀ ਕਾਨੑੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

The Lord ushered in the Dark Age, the Iron Age of Kali Yuga; three legs of religion were lost, and only the fourth leg remained intact.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਅਉਖਧੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

गुर सबदु कमाइआ अउखधु हरि पाइआ हरि कीरति हरि सांति पाइ जीउ ॥

Gur sabadu kamaaiaa aukhadhu hari paaiaa hari keerati hari saanti paai jeeu ||

Acting in accordance with the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the medicine of the Lord's Name is obtained. Singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, divine peace is obtained.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਰੁਤਿ ਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਖੇਤੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥

हरि कीरति रुति आई हरि नामु वडाई हरि हरि नामु खेतु जमाइआ ॥

Hari keerati ruti aaee hari naamu vadaaee hari hari naamu khetu jamaaiaa ||

The season of singing the Lord's Praise has arrived; the Lord's Name is glorified, and the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, grows in the field of the body.

ਕਲਿਜੁਗਿ ਬੀਜੁ ਬੀਜੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭੁ ਲਾਹਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

कलिजुगि बीजु बीजे बिनु नावै सभु लाहा मूलु गवाइआ ॥

Kalijugi beeju beeje binu naavai sabhu laahaa moolu gavaaiaa ||

In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, if one plants any other seed than the Name, all profit and capital is lost.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਖਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

जन नानकि गुरु पूरा पाइआ मनि हिरदै नामु लखाइ जीउ ॥

Jan naanaki guru pooraa paaiaa mani hiradai naamu lakhaai jeeu ||

Servant Nanak has found the Perfect Guru, who has revealed to him the Naam within his heart and mind.

ਕਲਜੁਗੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਪਗ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਖਿਸਕੀਆ ਪਗੁ ਚਉਥਾ ਟਿਕੈ ਟਿਕਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੧॥

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि कीरति मनि भाई परम गति पाई हरि मनि तनि मीठ लगान जीउ ॥

Hari keerati mani bhaaee param gati paaee hari mani tani meeth lagaan jeeu ||

One whose mind is pleased with the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, attains the supreme status; the Lord seems so sweet to her mind and body.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि रसु पाइआ गुरमति हरि धिआइआ धुरि मसतकि भाग पुरान जीउ ॥

Hari hari rasu paaiaa guramati hari dhiaaiaa dhuri masataki bhaag puraan jeeu ||

She obtains the sublime essence of the Lord, Har, Har; through the Guru's Teachings, she meditates on the Lord, and the destiny written on her forehead is fulfilled.

ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

धुरि मसतकि भागु हरि नामि सुहागु हरि नामै हरि गुण गाइआ ॥

Dhuri masataki bhaagu hari naami suhaagu hari naamai hari gu(nn) gaaiaa ||

By that high destiny written on her forehead, she chants the Name of the Lord, her Husband, and through the Name of the Lord, she sings the Lord's Glorious Praises.

ਮਸਤਕਿ ਮਣੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ॥

मसतकि मणी प्रीति बहु प्रगटी हरि नामै हरि सोहाइआ ॥

Masataki ma(nn)ee preeti bahu prgatee hari naamai hari sohaaiaa ||

The jewel of immense love sparkles on her forehead, and she is adorned with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਨੂਆ ਮਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥

जोती जोति मिली प्रभु पाइआ मिलि सतिगुर मनूआ मान जीउ ॥

Jotee joti milee prbhu paaiaa mili satigur manooaa maan jeeu ||

Her light blends with the Supreme Light, and she obtains God; meeting the True Guru, her mind is satisfied.

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

हरि हरि जसु गाइआ परम पदु पाइआ ते ऊतम जन परधान जीउ ॥

Hari hari jasu gaaiaa param padu paaiaa te utam jan paradhaan jeeu ||

Those who sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har, obtain the supreme status; they are the most exalted and acclaimed people.

ਤਿਨੑ ਹਮ ਚਰਣ ਸਰੇਵਹ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਗ ਧੋਵਹ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠ ਲਗਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥

तिन्ह हम चरण सरेवह खिनु खिनु पग धोवह जिन हरि मीठ लगान जीउ ॥

Tinh ham chara(nn) sarevah khinu khinu pag dhovah jin hari meeth lagaan jeeu ||

I bow at their feet; each and every moment, I wash the feet of those, unto whom the Lord seems sweet.

ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਾਗਾ ਰਤੀ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

हरि मीठा लाइआ परम सुख पाइआ मुखि भागा रती चारे ॥

Hari meethaa laaiaa param sukh paaiaa mukhi bhaagaa ratee chaare ||

The Lord seems sweet to them, and they obtain the supreme status; their faces are radiant and beautiful with good fortune.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਾਰੁ ਉਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਕੰਠਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

गुरमति हरि गाइआ हरि हारु उरि पाइआ हरि नामा कंठि धारे ॥

Guramati hari gaaiaa hari haaru uri paaiaa hari naamaa kantthi dhaare ||

Under Guru's Instruction, they sing the Lord's Name, and wear the garland of the Lord's Name around their necks; they keep the Lord's Name in their throats.

ਸਭ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਮਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥

सभ एक द्रिसटि समतु करि देखै सभु आतम रामु पछान जीउ ॥

Sabh ek drisati samatu kari dekhai sabhu aatam raamu pachhaan jeeu ||

They look upon all with equality, and recognize the Supreme Soul, the Lord, pervading among all.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਊਤਮ ਜਨ ਪਰਧਾਨ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

हरि हरि जसु गाइआ परम पदु पाइआ ते ऊतम जन परधान जीउ ॥२॥

सतसंगति मनि भाई हरि रसन रसाई विचि संगति हरि रसु होइ जीउ ॥

Satasanggati mani bhaaee hari rasan rasaaee vichi sanggati hari rasu hoi jeeu ||

One whose mind is pleased with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, savors the sublime essence of the Lord; in the Sangat, is this essence of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਗਾਸਿਆ ਬੀਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि आराधिआ गुर सबदि विगासिआ बीजा अवरु न कोइ जीउ ॥

Hari hari aaraadhiaa gur sabadi vigaasiaa beejaa avaru na koi jeeu ||

He meditates in adoration upon the Lord, Har, Har, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he blossoms forth. He plants no other seed.

ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਸੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

अवरु न कोइ हरि अम्रितु सोइ जिनि पीआ सो बिधि जाणै ॥

Avaru na koi hari ammmritu soi jini peeaa so bidhi jaa(nn)ai ||

There is no Nectar, other than the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar. One who drinks it in, knows the way.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਲਗਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

धनु धंनु गुरू पूरा प्रभु पाइआ लगि संगति नामु पछाणै ॥

Dhanu dhannu guroo pooraa prbhu paaiaa lagi sanggati naamu pachhaa(nn)ai ||

Hail, hail to the Perfect Guru; through Him, God is found. Joining the Sangat, the Naam is understood.

ਨਾਮੋ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਆਰਾਧੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

नामो सेवि नामो आराधै बिनु नामै अवरु न कोइ जीउ ॥

Naamo sevi naamo aaraadhai binu naamai avaru na koi jeeu ||

I serve the Naam, and I meditate on the Naam. Without the Naam, there is no other at all.

ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਈ ਵਿਚਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

सतसंगति मनि भाई हरि रसन रसाई विचि संगति हरि रसु होइ जीउ ॥३॥

Satasanggati mani bhaaee hari rasan rasaaee vichi sanggati hari rasu hoi jeeu ||3||

One whose mind is pleased with the Sat Sangat, savors the sublime essence of the Lord; in the Sangat, is this essence of the Lord. ||3||


ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਪਾਖਣ ਹਮ ਤਾਰਹੁ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि दइआ प्रभ धारहु पाखण हम तारहु कढि लेवहु सबदि सुभाइ जीउ ॥

Hari daiaa prbh dhaarahu paakha(nn) ham taarahu kadhi levahu sabadi subhaai jeeu ||

O Lord God, shower Your Mercy upon me; I am just a stone. Please, carry me across, and lift me up with ease, through the Word of the Shabad.

ਮੋਹ ਚੀਕੜਿ ਫਾਥੇ ਨਿਘਰਤ ਹਮ ਜਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਂਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਕਰਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

मोह चीकड़ि फाथे निघरत हम जाते हरि बांह प्रभू पकराइ जीउ ॥

Moh cheeka(rr)i phaathe nigharat ham jaate hari baanh prbhoo pakaraai jeeu ||

I am stuck in the swamp of emotional attachment, and I am sinking. O Lord God, please, take me by the arm.

ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਬਾਂਹ ਪਕਰਾਈ ਊਤਮ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਜਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

प्रभि बांह पकराई ऊतम मति पाई गुर चरणी जनु लागा ॥

Prbhi baanh pakaraaee utam mati paaee gur chara(nn)ee janu laagaa ||

God took me by the arm, and I obtained the highest understanding; as His slave, I grasped the Guru's feet.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥

हरि हरि नामु जपिआ आराधिआ मुखि मसतकि भागु सभागा ॥

Hari hari naamu japiaa aaraadhiaa mukhi masataki bhaagu sabhaagaa ||

I chant and meditate in adoration upon the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, according to the good destiny written upon my forehead.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

जन नानक हरि किरपा धारी मनि हरि हरि मीठा लाइ जीउ ॥

Jan naanak hari kirapaa dhaaree mani hari hari meethaa laai jeeu ||

The Lord has showered His Mercy upon servant Nanak, and the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, seems so sweet to his mind.

ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਾਰਹੁ ਪਾਖਣ ਹਮ ਤਾਰਹੁ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੨॥

हरि दइआ प्रभ धारहु पाखण हम तारहु कढि लेवहु सबदि सुभाइ जीउ ॥४॥५॥१२॥

Hari daiaa prbh dhaarahu paakha(nn) ham taarahu kadhi levahu sabadi subhaai jeeu ||4||5||12||

O Lord God, shower Your Mercy upon me; I am just a stone. Please, carry me across, and lift me up with ease, through the Word of the Shabad. ||4||5||12||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥

मनि नामु जपाना हरि हरि मनि भाना हरि भगत जना मनि चाउ जीउ ॥

Mani naamu japaanaa hari hari mani bhaanaa hari bhagat janaa mani chaau jeeu ||

One who chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har in his mind - the Lord is pleasing to his mind. In the mind of the devotees there is a great yearning for the Lord.

ਜੋ ਜਨ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੇ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥

जो जन मरि जीवे तिन्ह अम्रितु पीवे मनि लागा गुरमति भाउ जीउ ॥

Jo jan mari jeeve tinh ammmritu peeve mani laagaa guramati bhaau jeeu ||

Those humble beings who remain dead while yet alive, drink in the Ambrosial Nectar; through the Guru's Teachings, their minds embrace love for the Lord.

ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

मनि हरि हरि भाउ गुरु करे पसाउ जीवन मुकतु सुखु होई ॥

Mani hari hari bhaau guru kare pasaau jeevan mukatu sukhu hoee ||

Their minds love the Lord, Har, Har, and the Guru is Merciful to them. They are Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive, and they are at peace.

ਜੀਵਣਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

जीवणि मरणि हरि नामि सुहेले मनि हरि हरि हिरदै सोई ॥

Jeeva(nn)i mara(nn)i hari naami suhele mani hari hari hiradai soee ||

Their birth and death, through the Name of the Lord, are illustrious, and in their hearts and minds, the Lord, Har, Har, abides.

ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਗਟਾਕ ਪੀਆਉ ਜੀਉ ॥

मनि हरि हरि वसिआ गुरमति हरि रसिआ हरि हरि रस गटाक पीआउ जीउ ॥

Mani hari hari vasiaa guramati hari rasiaa hari hari ras gataak peeaau jeeu ||

The Name of the Lord, Har, Har, abides in their minds, and through the Guru's Teachings, they savor the Lord, Har, Har; they drink in the sublime essence of the Lord with abandon.

ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

मनि नामु जपाना हरि हरि मनि भाना हरि भगत जना मनि चाउ जीउ ॥१॥

Mani naamu japaanaa hari hari mani bhaanaa hari bhagat janaa mani chaau jeeu ||1||

One who chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, in his mind - the Lord is pleasing to his mind. In the mind of the devotees there is such a great yearning for the Lord. ||1||


ਜਗਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ਨਿਤ ਆਪੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ਮਤ ਜਮੁ ਪਕਰੈ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

जगि मरणु न भाइआ नित आपु लुकाइआ मत जमु पकरै लै जाइ जीउ ॥

Jagi mara(nn)u na bhaaiaa nit aapu lukaaiaa mat jamu pakarai lai jaai jeeu ||

The people of the world do not like death; they try to hide from it. They are afraid that the Messenger of Death may catch them and take them away.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਰਖਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि अंतरि बाहरि हरि प्रभु एको इहु जीअड़ा रखिआ न जाइ जीउ ॥

Hari anttari baahari hari prbhu eko ihu jeea(rr)aa rakhiaa na jaai jeeu ||

Inwardly and outwardly, the Lord God is the One and Only; this soul cannot be concealed from Him.

ਕਿਉ ਜੀਉ ਰਖੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਲੋੜੀਜੈ ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੋ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

किउ जीउ रखीजै हरि वसतु लोड़ीजै जिस की वसतु सो लै जाइ जीउ ॥

Kiu jeeu rakheejai hari vasatu lo(rr)eejai jis kee vasatu so lai jaai jeeu ||

How can one keep one's soul, when the Lord wishes to have it? All things belong to Him, and He shall take them away.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਵ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਸਭਿ ਅਉਖਧ ਦਾਰੂ ਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

मनमुख करण पलाव करि भरमे सभि अउखध दारू लाइ जीउ ॥

Manamukh kara(nn) palaav kari bharame sabhi aukhadh daaroo laai jeeu ||

The self-willed manmukhs wander around in pathetic lamentation, trying all medicines and remedies.

ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਏ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

जिस की वसतु प्रभु लए सुआमी जन उबरे सबदु कमाइ जीउ ॥

Jis kee vasatu prbhu lae suaamee jan ubare sabadu kamaai jeeu ||

God, the Master, unto whom all things belong, shall take them away; the Lord's servant is redeemed by living the Word of the Shabad.

ਜਗਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ਨਿਤ ਆਪੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ਮਤ ਜਮੁ ਪਕਰੈ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

जगि मरणु न भाइआ नित आपु लुकाइआ मत जमु पकरै लै जाइ जीउ ॥२॥

Jagi mara(nn)u na bhaaiaa nit aapu lukaaiaa mat jamu pakarai lai jaai jeeu ||2||

धुरि मरणु लिखाइआ गुरमुखि सोहाइआ जन उबरे हरि हरि धिआनि जीउ ॥

Dhuri mara(nn)u likhaaiaa guramukhi sohaaiaa jan ubare hari hari dhiaani jeeu ||

Death is pre-ordained; the Gurmukhs look beauteous, and the humble beings are saved, meditating on the Lord, Har, Har.

ਹਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि सोभा पाई हरि नामि वडिआई हरि दरगह पैधे जानि जीउ ॥

Hari sobhaa paaee hari naami vadiaaee hari daragah paidhe jaani jeeu ||

Through the Lord they obtain honor, and through the Lord's Name, glorious greatness. In the Court of the Lord, they are robed in honor.

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਸੀਧੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हरि दरगह पैधे हरि नामै सीधे हरि नामै ते सुखु पाइआ ॥

Hari daragah paidhe hari naamai seedhe hari naamai te sukhu paaiaa ||

Robed in honor in the Court of the Lord, in the perfection of the Lord's Name, they obtain peace through the Lord's Name.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੋਵੈ ਦੁਖ ਮੇਟੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥

जनम मरण दोवै दुख मेटे हरि रामै नामि समाइआ ॥

Janam mara(nn) dovai dukh mete hari raamai naami samaaiaa ||

The pains of both birth and death are eliminated, and they merge into the Name of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਲਿ ਏਕੋ ਹੋਏ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि जन प्रभु रलि एको होए हरि जन प्रभु एक समानि जीउ ॥

Hari jan prbhu rali eko hoe hari jan prbhu ek samaani jeeu ||

The Lord's servants meet with God and merge into Oneness. The Lord's servant and God are one and the same.

ਧੁਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਹਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

धुरि मरणु लिखाइआ गुरमुखि सोहाइआ जन उबरे हरि हरि धिआनि जीउ ॥३॥

Dhuri mara(nn)u likhaaiaa guramukhi sohaaiaa jan ubare hari hari dhiaani jeeu ||3||

The people of the world are born, only to perish, and perish, and perish again. Only by attaching oneself to the Lord as Gurmukh, does one become permanent.

ਗੁਰੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਕਿ ਰਸਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

गुरु मंत्रु द्रिड़ाए हरि रसकि रसाए हरि अम्रितु हरि मुखि चोइ जीउ ॥

Guru manttru dri(rr)aae hari rasaki rasaae hari ammmritu hari mukhi choi jeeu ||

The Guru implants His Mantra within the heart, and one savors the sublime essence of the Lord; the Ambrosial Nectar of the Lord trickles into his mouth.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੁਆ ਜੀਵਾਇਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

हरि अम्रित रसु पाइआ मुआ जीवाइआ फिरि बाहुड़ि मरणु न होई ॥

Hari ammmrit rasu paaiaa muaa jeevaaiaa phiri baahu(rr)i mara(nn)u na hoee ||

Obtaining the Ambrosial Essence of the Lord, the dead are restored to life, and do not die again.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮਰ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥

हरि हरि नामु अमर पदु पाइआ हरि नामि समावै सोई ॥

Hari hari naamu amar padu paaiaa hari naami samaavai soee ||

Through the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, one obtains the immortal status, and merges into the Lord's Name.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ਟੇਕ ਹੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

जन नानक नामु अधारु टेक है बिनु नावै अवरु न कोइ जीउ ॥

Jan naanak naamu adhaaru tek hai binu naavai avaru na koi jeeu ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the only Support and Anchor of servant Nanak; without the Naam, there is nothing else at all.

ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸੈ ਲਗਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੩॥

ਵਡਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

वडा मेरा गोविंदु अगम अगोचरु आदि निरंजनु निरंकारु जीउ ॥

Vadaa meraa govinddu agam agocharu aadi niranjjanu nirankkaaru jeeu ||

My Lord of the Universe is great, unapproachable, unfathomable, primal, immaculate and formless.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਅਮਿਤਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਜੀਉ ॥

ता की गति कही न जाई अमिति वडिआई मेरा गोविंदु अलख अपार जीउ ॥

Taa kee gati kahee na jaaee amiti vadiaaee meraa govinddu alakh apaar jeeu ||

His condition cannot be described; His Glorious Greatness is immeasurable. My Lord of the Universe is invisible and infinite.

ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

गोविंदु अलख अपारु अपर्मपरु आपु आपणा जाणै ॥

Govinddu alakh apaaru aparampparu aapu aapa(nn)aa jaa(nn)ai ||

The Lord of the Universe is invisible, infinite and unlimited. He Himself knows Himself.

ਕਿਆ ਇਹ ਜੰਤ ਵਿਚਾਰੇ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥

किआ इह जंत विचारे कहीअहि जो तुधु आखि वखाणै ॥

Kiaa ih jantt vichaare kaheeahi jo tudhu aakhi vakhaa(nn)ai ||

What should these poor creatures say? How can they speak of and describe You?

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅਪਣੀ ਸੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

जिस नो नदरि करहि तूं अपणी सो गुरमुखि करे वीचारु जीउ ॥

Jis no nadari karahi toonn apa(nn)ee so guramukhi kare veechaaru jeeu ||

That Gurmukh who is blessed by Your Glance of Grace contemplates You.

ਵਡਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਗੋਵਿੰਦੁ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

वडा मेरा गोविंदु अगम अगोचरु आदि निरंजनु निरंकारु जीउ ॥१॥

Vadaa meraa govinddu agam agocharu aadi niranjjanu nirankkaaru jeeu ||1||

My Lord of the Universe is great, unapproachable, unfathomable, primal, immaculate and formless. ||1||


ਤੂੰ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

तूं आदि पुरखु अपर्मपरु करता तेरा पारु न पाइआ जाइ जीउ ॥

Toonn aadi purakhu aparampparu karataa teraa paaru na paaiaa jaai jeeu ||

You, O Lord, O Primal Being, are the Limitless Creator; Your limits cannot be found.

ਤੂੰ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

तूं घट घट अंतरि सरब निरंतरि सभ महि रहिआ समाइ जीउ ॥

Toonn ghat ghat anttari sarab niranttari sabh mahi rahiaa samaai jeeu ||

You are pervading and permeating each and every heart, everywhere, You are contained in all.

ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

घट अंतरि पारब्रहमु परमेसरु ता का अंतु न पाइआ ॥

Ghat anttari paarabrhamu paramesaru taa kaa anttu na paaiaa ||

Within the heart is the Transcendent, Supreme Lord God, whose limits cannot be found.

ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥

तिसु रूपु न रेख अदिसटु अगोचरु गुरमुखि अलखु लखाइआ ॥

Tisu roopu na rekh adisatu agocharu guramukhi alakhu lakhaaiaa ||

He has no form or shape; He is unseen and unknown. The Gurmukh sees the unseen Lord.

ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

सदा अनंदि रहै दिनु राती सहजे नामि समाइ जीउ ॥

Sadaa ananddi rahai dinu raatee sahaje naami samaai jeeu ||

He remains in continual ecstasy, day and night, and is spontaneously absorbed into the Naam.

ਤੂੰ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

तूं आदि पुरखु अपर्मपरु करता तेरा पारु न पाइआ जाइ जीउ ॥२॥

Toonn aadi purakhu aparampparu karataa teraa paaru na paaiaa jaai jeeu ||2||

You, O Lord, O Primal Being, are the Limitless Creator; Your limits cannot be found. ||2||


ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

तूं सति परमेसरु सदा अबिनासी हरि हरि गुणी निधानु जीउ ॥

Toonn sati paramesaru sadaa abinaasee hari hari gu(nn)ee nidhaanu jeeu ||

You are the True, Transcendent Lord, forever imperishable. The Lord, Har, Har, is the treasure of virtue.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੋ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि हरि प्रभु एको अवरु न कोई तूं आपे पुरखु सुजानु जीउ ॥

Hari hari prbhu eko avaru na koee toonn aape purakhu sujaanu jeeu ||

The Lord God, Har, Har, is the One and only; there is no other at all. You Yourself are the all-knowing Lord.

ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ਤੂੰ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

पुरखु सुजानु तूं परधानु तुधु जेवडु अवरु न कोई ॥

Purakhu sujaanu toonn paradhaanu tudhu jevadu avaru na koee ||

You are the all-knowing Lord, the most exalted and auspicious; there is no other as great as You.

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

तेरा सबदु सभु तूंहै वरतहि तूं आपे करहि सु होई ॥

Teraa sabadu sabhu toonhhai varatahi toonn aape karahi su hoee ||

The Word of Your Shabad is pervading in all; whatever You do, comes to pass.

ਹਰਿ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਖਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀਉ ॥

हरि सभ महि रविआ एको सोई गुरमुखि लखिआ हरि नामु जीउ ॥

Hari sabh mahi raviaa eko soee guramukhi lakhiaa hari naamu jeeu ||

The One Lord God is permeating all; the Gurmukh comes to understand the Lord's Name.

ਤੂੰ ਸਤਿ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣੀ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

तूं सति परमेसरु सदा अबिनासी हरि हरि गुणी निधानु जीउ ॥३॥

Toonn sati paramesaru sadaa abinaasee hari hari gu(nn)ee nidhaanu jeeu ||3||

सभु तूंहै करता सभ तेरी वडिआई जिउ भावै तिवै चलाइ जीउ ॥

Sabhu toonhhai karataa sabh teree vadiaaee jiu bhaavai tivai chalaai jeeu ||

You are the Creator of all, and all greatness is Yours. As it pleases Your Will, so do we act.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

तुधु आपे भावै तिवै चलावहि सभ तेरै सबदि समाइ जीउ ॥

Tudhu aape bhaavai tivai chalaavahi sabh terai sabadi samaai jeeu ||

As it pleases Your Will, so do we act. All are merged into Your Shabad.

ਸਭ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

सभ सबदि समावै जां तुधु भावै तेरै सबदि वडिआई ॥

Sabh sabadi samaavai jaan tudhu bhaavai terai sabadi vadiaaee ||

When it pleases Your Will, we obtain greatness through Your Shabad.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਸਬਦੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

गुरमुखि बुधि पाईऐ आपु गवाईऐ सबदे रहिआ समाई ॥

Guramukhi budhi paaeeai aapu gavaaeeai sabade rahiaa samaaee ||

The Gurmukh obtains wisdom, and eliminates his self-conceit, and remains absorbed in the Shabad.

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥

तेरा सबदु अगोचरु गुरमुखि पाईऐ नानक नामि समाइ जीउ ॥

Teraa sabadu agocharu guramukhi paaeeai naanak naami samaai jeeu ||

The Gurmukh obtains Your incomprehensible Shabad; O Nanak, he remains merged in the Naam.

ਸਭੁ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੪॥

सभु तूंहै करता सभ तेरी वडिआई जिउ भावै तिवै चलाइ जीउ ॥४॥७॥१४॥

Sabhu toonhhai karataa sabh teree vadiaaee jiu bhaavai tivai chalaai jeeu ||4||7||14||

You are the Creator of all, and all greatness is Yours. As it pleases Your Will, so do we act. ||4||7||14||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl, Chhant, Fourth House:

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਿੰਨੇ ਲੋਇਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਰਤੰਨਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

हरि अम्रित भिंने लोइणा मनु प्रेमि रतंना राम राजे ॥

Hari ammmrit bhinne loi(nn)aa manu premi ratannaa raam raaje ||

My eyes are wet with the Nectar of the Lord, and my mind is imbued with His Love, O Lord King.

ਮਨੁ ਰਾਮਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਇਆ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਸੋਵਿੰਨਾ ॥

मनु रामि कसवटी लाइआ कंचनु सोविंना ॥

Manu raami kasavatee laaiaa kancchanu sovinnaa ||

The Lord applied His touch-stone to my mind, and found it one hundred per cent gold.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੋ ਭਿੰਨਾ ॥

गुरमुखि रंगि चलूलिआ मेरा मनु तनो भिंना ॥

Guramukhi ranggi chalooliaa meraa manu tano bhinnaa ||

As Gurmukh, I am dyed in the deep red of the poppy, and my mind and body are drenched with His Love.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੁਸਕਿ ਝਕੋਲਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨਾ ॥੧॥

जनु नानकु मुसकि झकोलिआ सभु जनमु धनु धंना ॥१॥

Janu naanaku musaki jhakoliaa sabhu janamu dhanu dhannaa ||1||

Servant Nanak is drenched with His Fragrance; blessed, blessed is his entire life. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਾਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਅਣੀਆਲੇ ਅਣੀਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

हरि प्रेम बाणी मनु मारिआ अणीआले अणीआ राम राजे ॥

Hari prem baa(nn)ee manu maariaa a(nn)eeaale a(nn)eeaa raam raaje ||

The Bani of the Lord's Love is the pointed arrow, which has pierced my mind, O Lord King.

ਜਿਸੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਪੀਰ ਪਿਰੰਮ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਰੀਆ ॥

जिसु लागी पीर पिरम की सो जाणै जरीआ ॥

Jisu laagee peer piramm kee so jaa(nn)ai jareeaa ||

Only those who feel the pain of this love, know how to endure it.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਮਰਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਮਰੀਆ ॥

जीवन मुकति सो आखीऐ मरि जीवै मरीआ ॥

Jeevan mukati so aakheeai mari jeevai mareeaa ||

Those who die, and remain dead while yet alive, are said to be Jivan Mukta, liberated while yet alive.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਗੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਤਰੀਆ ॥੨॥

जन नानक सतिगुरु मेलि हरि जगु दुतरु तरीआ ॥२॥

Jan naanak satiguru meli hari jagu dutaru tareeaa ||2||

O Lord, unite servant Nanak with the True Guru, that he may cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||


ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਮਿਲੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਰੰਗਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

हम मूरख मुगध सरणागती मिलु गोविंद रंगा राम राजे ॥

Ham moorakh mugadh sara(nn)aagatee milu govindd ranggaa raam raaje ||

I am foolish and ignorant, but I have taken to His Sanctuary; may I merge in the Love of the Lord of the Universe, O Lord King.

ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਇਕ ਮੰਗਾ ॥

गुरि पूरै हरि पाइआ हरि भगति इक मंगा ॥

Guri poorai hari paaiaa hari bhagati ik manggaa ||

Through the Perfect Guru, I have obtained the Lord, and I beg for the one blessing of devotion to the Lord.

ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਿਗਾਸਿਆ ਜਪਿ ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥

मेरा मनु तनु सबदि विगासिआ जपि अनत तरंगा ॥

Meraa manu tanu sabadi vigaasiaa japi anat taranggaa ||

My mind and body blossom forth through the Word of the Shabad; I meditate on the Lord of infinite waves.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਸੰਗਾ ॥੩॥

मिलि संत जना हरि पाइआ नानक सतसंगा ॥३॥

Mili santt janaa hari paaiaa naanak satasanggaa ||3||

Meeting with the humble Saints, Nanak finds the Lord, in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. ||3||


ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

दीन दइआल सुणि बेनती हरि प्रभ हरि राइआ राम राजे ॥

Deen daiaal su(nn)i benatee hari prbh hari raaiaa raam raaje ||

O Merciful to the meek, hear my prayer, O Lord God; You are my Master, O Lord King.

ਹਉ ਮਾਗਉ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हउ मागउ सरणि हरि नाम की हरि हरि मुखि पाइआ ॥

Hau maagau sara(nn)i hari naam kee hari hari mukhi paaiaa ||

I beg for the Sanctuary of the Lord's Name, Har, Har; please, place it in my mouth.

ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਜ ਰਖਾਇਆ ॥

भगति वछलु हरि बिरदु है हरि लाज रखाइआ ॥

Bhagati vachhalu hari biradu hai hari laaj rakhaaiaa ||

It is the Lord's natural way to love His devotees; O Lord, please preserve my honor!

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੮॥੧੫॥

जनु नानकु सरणागती हरि नामि तराइआ ॥४॥८॥१५॥

Janu naanaku sara(nn)aagatee hari naami taraaiaa ||4||8||15||

Servant Nanak has entered His Sanctuary, and has been saved by the Name of the Lord. ||4||8||15||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਢੂਢੇਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਲਧਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

गुरमुखि ढूंढि ढूढेदिआ हरि सजणु लधा राम राजे ॥

Guramukhi dhoonddhi dhoodhediaa hari saja(nn)u ladhaa raam raaje ||

As Gurmukh, I searched and searched, and found the Lord, my Friend, my Sovereign Lord King.

ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟ ਗੜ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਧਾ ॥

कंचन काइआ कोट गड़ विचि हरि हरि सिधा ॥

Kancchan kaaiaa kot ga(rr) vichi hari hari sidhaa ||

Within the walled fortress of my golden body, the Lord, Har, Har, is revealed.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੀਰਾ ਰਤਨੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਵਿਧਾ ॥

हरि हरि हीरा रतनु है मेरा मनु तनु विधा ॥

Hari hari heeraa ratanu hai meraa manu tanu vidhaa ||

The Lord, Har, Har, is a jewel, a diamond; my mind and body are pierced through.

ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗ ਵਡੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਸਿ ਗੁਧਾ ॥੧॥

धुरि भाग वडे हरि पाइआ नानक रसि गुधा ॥१॥

Dhuri bhaag vade hari paaiaa naanak rasi gudhaa ||1||

By the great good fortune of pre-ordained destiny, I have found the Lord. Nanak is permeated with His sublime essence. ||1||


ਪੰਥੁ ਦਸਾਵਾ ਨਿਤ ਖੜੀ ਮੁੰਧ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਬਾਲੀ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

पंथु दसावा नित खड़ी मुंध जोबनि बाली राम राजे ॥

Pantthu dasaavaa nit kha(rr)ee munddh jobani baalee raam raaje ||

I stand by the roadside, and ask the way; I am just a youthful bride of the Lord King.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚੇਤਾਇ ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਚਾਲੀ ॥

हरि हरि नामु चेताइ गुर हरि मारगि चाली ॥

Hari hari naamu chetaai gur hari maaragi chaalee ||

The Guru has caused me to remember the Name of the Lord, Har, Har; I follow the Path to Him.

ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਲੀ ॥

मेरै मनि तनि नामु आधारु है हउमै बिखु जाली ॥

Merai mani tani naamu aadhaaru hai haumai bikhu jaalee ||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the Support of my mind and body; I have burnt away the poison of ego.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਬਨਵਾਲੀ ॥੨॥

जन नानक सतिगुरु मेलि हरि हरि मिलिआ बनवाली ॥२॥

Jan naanak satiguru meli hari hari miliaa banavaalee ||2||

O True Guru, unite me with the Lord, unite me with the Lord, adorned with garlands of flowers. ||2||


ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੁ ਮੈ ਚਿਰੀ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

गुरमुखि पिआरे आइ मिलु मै चिरी विछुंने राम राजे ॥

Guramukhi piaare aai milu mai chiree vichhunne raam raaje ||

O my Love, come and meet me as Gurmukh; I have been separated from You for so long, Lord King.

ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬੈਰਾਗਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨੈਣ ਰਸਿ ਭਿੰਨੇ ॥

मेरा मनु तनु बहुतु बैरागिआ हरि नैण रसि भिंने ॥

Meraa manu tanu bahutu bairaagiaa hari nai(nn) rasi bhinne ||

My mind and body are sad; my eyes are wet with the Lord's sublime essence.

ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਦਸਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਨੇ ॥

मै हरि प्रभु पिआरा दसि गुरु मिलि हरि मनु मंने ॥

Mai hari prbhu piaaraa dasi guru mili hari manu manne ||

Show me my Lord God, my Love, O Guru; meeting the Lord, my mind is pleased.

ਹਉ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਮੇ ॥੩॥

हउ मूरखु कारै लाईआ नानक हरि कमे ॥३॥

Hau moorakhu kaarai laaeeaa naanak hari kamme ||3||

I am just a fool, O Nanak, but the Lord has appointed me to perform His service. ||3||


ਗੁਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭਿੰਨੀ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬੁਰਕੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

गुर अम्रित भिंनी देहुरी अम्रितु बुरके राम राजे ॥

Gur ammmrit bhinnee dehuree ammmritu burake raam raaje ||

The Guru's body is drenched with Ambrosial Nectar; He sprinkles it upon me, O Lord King.

ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਛਕਿ ਛਕੇ ॥

जिना गुरबाणी मनि भाईआ अम्रिति छकि छके ॥

Jinaa gurabaa(nn)ee mani bhaaeeaa ammmriti chhaki chhake ||

Those whose minds are pleased with the Word of the Guru's Bani, drink in the Ambrosial Nectar again and again.

ਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਚੂਕੇ ਧਕ ਧਕੇ ॥

गुर तुठै हरि पाइआ चूके धक धके ॥

Gur tuthai hari paaiaa chooke dhak dhake ||

As the Guru is pleased, the Lord is obtained, and you shall not be pushed around any more.

ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਇਆ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਇਕੇ ॥੪॥੯॥੧੬॥

हरि जनु हरि हरि होइआ नानकु हरि इके ॥४॥९॥१६॥

Hari janu hari hari hoiaa naanaku hari ike ||4||9||16||

The Lord's humble servant becomes the Lord, Har, Har; O Nanak, the Lord and His servant are one and the same. ||4||9||16||

हरि अम्रित भगति भंडार है गुर सतिगुर पासे राम राजे ॥

Hari ammmrit bhagati bhanddaar hai gur satigur paase raam raaje ||

The treasure of Ambrosial Nectar the Lord's devotional service is found through the Guru, the True Guru, O Lord King.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਹੈ ਸਿਖ ਦੇਇ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਸੇ ॥

गुरु सतिगुरु सचा साहु है सिख देइ हरि रासे ॥

Guru satiguru sachaa saahu hai sikh dei hari raase ||

The Guru, the True Guru, is the True Banker, who gives to His Sikh the capital of the Lord.

ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਵਣਜੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਾਬਾਸੇ ॥

धनु धंनु वणजारा वणजु है गुरु साहु साबासे ॥

Dhanu dhannu va(nn)ajaaraa va(nn)aju hai guru saahu saabaase ||

Blessed, blessed is the trader and the trade; how wonderful is the Banker, the Guru!

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਲਿਖਾਸੇ ॥੧॥

जनु नानकु गुरु तिन्ही पाइआ जिन धुरि लिखतु लिलाटि लिखासे ॥१॥

Janu naanaku guru tinhee paaiaa jin dhuri likhatu lilaati likhaase ||1||

O servant Nanak, they alone obtain the Guru, who have such pre-ordained destiny written upon their foreheads. ||1||


ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਧਣੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

सचु साहु हमारा तूं धणी सभु जगतु वणजारा राम राजे ॥

Sachu saahu hamaaraa toonn dha(nn)ee sabhu jagatu va(nn)ajaaraa raam raaje ||

You are my True Banker, O Lord; the whole world is Your trader, O Lord King.

ਸਭ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਤੁਧੈ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਥਾਰਾ ॥

सभ भांडे तुधै साजिआ विचि वसतु हरि थारा ॥

Sabh bhaande tudhai saajiaa vichi vasatu hari thaaraa ||

You fashioned all vessels, O Lord, and that which dwells within is also Yours.

ਜੋ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਾ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਕਿਆ ਕੋਈ ਕਰੇ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥

जो पावहि भांडे विचि वसतु सा निकलै किआ कोई करे वेचारा ॥

Jo paavahi bhaande vichi vasatu saa nikalai kiaa koee kare vechaaraa ||

Whatever You place in that vessel, that alone comes out again. What can the poor creatures do?

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

जन नानक कउ हरि बखसिआ हरि भगति भंडारा ॥२॥

Jan naanak kau hari bakhasiaa hari bhagati bhanddaaraa ||2||

The Lord has given the treasure of His devotional worship to servant Nanak. ||2||


ਹਮ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਥਰਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੂੰ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

हम किआ गुण तेरे विथरह सुआमी तूं अपर अपारो राम राजे ॥

Ham kiaa gu(nn) tere vitharah suaamee toonn apar apaaro raam raaje ||

What Glorious Virtues of Yours can I describe, O Lord and Master? You are the most infinite of the infinite, O Lord King.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਹ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਏਹਾ ਆਸ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥

हरि नामु सालाहह दिनु राति एहा आस आधारो ॥

Hari naamu saalaahah dinu raati ehaa aas aadhaaro ||

I praise the Lord's Name, day and night; this alone is my hope and support.

ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਿਛੂਅ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਾ ਕਿਵ ਪਾਵਹ ਪਾਰੋ ॥

हम मूरख किछूअ न जाणहा किव पावह पारो ॥

Ham moorakh kichhooa na jaa(nn)ahaa kiv paavah paaro ||

I am a fool, and I know nothing. How can I find Your limits?

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੋ ॥੩॥

जनु नानकु हरि का दासु है हरि दास पनिहारो ॥३॥

Janu naanaku hari kaa daasu hai hari daas panihaaro ||3||

Servant Nanak is the slave of the Lord, the water-carrier of the slaves of the Lord. ||3||


ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੈ ਹਮ ਸਰਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਏ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखि लै हम सरणि प्रभ आए राम राजे ॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhi lai ham sara(nn)i prbh aae raam raaje ||

As it pleases You, You save me; I have come seeking Your Sanctuary, O God, O Lord King.

ਹਮ ਭੂਲਿ ਵਿਗਾੜਹ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਜ ਰਖਾਏ ॥

हम भूलि विगाड़ह दिनसु राति हरि लाज रखाए ॥

Ham bhooli vigaa(rr)ah dinasu raati hari laaj rakhaae ||

I am wandering around, ruining myself day and night; O Lord, please save my honor!

ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਦੇ ਮਤਿ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥

हम बारिक तूं गुरु पिता है दे मति समझाए ॥

Ham baarik toonn guru pitaa hai de mati samajhaae ||

I am just a child; You, O Guru, are my father. Please give me understanding and instruction.

ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਂਢਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਾਏ ॥੪॥੧੦॥੧੭॥

जनु नानकु दासु हरि कांढिआ हरि पैज रखाए ॥४॥१०॥१७॥

Janu naanaku daasu hari kaandhiaa hari paij rakhaae ||4||10||17||

Servant Nanak is known as the Lord's slave; O Lord, please preserve his honor! ||4||10||17||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਜਿਨ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिन मसतकि धुरि हरि लिखिआ तिना सतिगुरु मिलिआ राम राजे ॥

Jin masataki dhuri hari likhiaa tinaa satiguru miliaa raam raaje ||

Those who have the blessed pre-ordained destiny of the Lord written on their foreheads, meet the True Guru, the Lord King.

ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਘਟਿ ਬਲਿਆ ॥

अगिआनु अंधेरा कटिआ गुर गिआनु घटि बलिआ ॥

Agiaanu anddheraa katiaa gur giaanu ghati baliaa ||

The Guru removes the darkness of ignorance, and spiritual wisdom illuminates their hearts.

ਹਰਿ ਲਧਾ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ॥

हरि लधा रतनु पदारथो फिरि बहुड़ि न चलिआ ॥

Hari ladhaa ratanu padaaratho phiri bahu(rr)i na chaliaa ||

They find the wealth of the jewel of the Lord, and then, they do not wander any longer.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਆਰਾਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥੧॥

जन नानक नामु आराधिआ आराधि हरि मिलिआ ॥१॥

Jan naanak naamu aaraadhiaa aaraadhi hari miliaa ||1||

Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and in meditation, he meets the Lord. ||1||


ਜਿਨੀ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਜਗਿ ਆਏ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिनी ऐसा हरि नामु न चेतिओ से काहे जगि आए राम राजे ॥

Jinee aisaa hari naamu na chetio se kaahe jagi aae raam raaje ||

Those who have not kept the Lord's Name in their consciousness - why did they bother to come into the world, O Lord King?

ਇਹੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਏ ॥

इहु माणस जनमु दुल्मभु है नाम बिना बिरथा सभु जाए ॥

Ihu maa(nn)as janamu dulambbhu hai naam binaa birathaa sabhu jaae ||

It is so difficult to obtain this human incarnation, and without the Naam, it is all futile and useless.

ਹੁਣਿ ਵਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੀਜਿਓ ਅਗੈ ਭੁਖਾ ਕਿਆ ਖਾਏ ॥

हुणि वतै हरि नामु न बीजिओ अगै भुखा किआ खाए ॥

Hu(nn)i vatai hari naamu na beejio agai bhukhaa kiaa khaae ||

Now, in this most fortunate season, he does not plant the seed of the Lord's Name; what will the hungry soul eat, in the world hereafter?

ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਏ ॥੨॥

मनमुखा नो फिरि जनमु है नानक हरि भाए ॥२॥

Manamukhaa no phiri janamu hai naanak hari bhaae ||2||

The self-willed manmukhs are born again and again. O Nanak, such is the Lord's Will. ||2||


ਤੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਉਪਾਏ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

तूं हरि तेरा सभु को सभि तुधु उपाए राम राजे ॥

Toonn hari teraa sabhu ko sabhi tudhu upaae raam raaje ||

You, O Lord, belong to all, and all belong to You. You created all, O Lord King.

ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਚਲਾਏ ॥

किछु हाथि किसै दै किछु नाही सभि चलहि चलाए ॥

Kichhu haathi kisai dai kichhu naahee sabhi chalahi chalaae ||

Nothing is in anyone's hands; all walk as You cause them to walk.

ਜਿਨੑ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥

जिन्ह तूं मेलहि पिआरे से तुधु मिलहि जो हरि मनि भाए ॥

Jinh toonn melahi piaare se tudhu milahi jo hari mani bhaae ||

They alone are united with You, O Beloved, whom You cause to be so united; they alone are pleasing to Your Mind.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾਏ ॥੩॥

जन नानक सतिगुरु भेटिआ हरि नामि तराए ॥३॥

Jan naanak satiguru bhetiaa hari naami taraae ||3||

Servant Nanak has met the True Guru, and through the Lord's Name, he has been carried across. ||3||


ਕੋਈ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਨਾਦੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

कोई गावै रागी नादी बेदी बहु भाति करि नही हरि हरि भीजै राम राजे ॥

Koee gaavai raagee naadee bedee bahu bhaati kari nahee hari hari bheejai raam raaje ||

Some sing of the Lord, through musical Ragas and the sound current of the Naad, through the Vedas, and in so many ways. But the Lord, Har, Har, is not pleased by these, O Lord King.

ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨਾ ਰੋਇ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

जिना अंतरि कपटु विकारु है तिना रोइ किआ कीजै ॥

Jinaa anttari kapatu vikaaru hai tinaa roi kiaa keejai ||

Those who are filled with fraud and corruption within - what good does it do for them to cry out?

ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਰੋਗ ਹਥੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

हरि करता सभु किछु जाणदा सिरि रोग हथु दीजै ॥

Hari karataa sabhu kichhu jaa(nn)adaa siri rog hathu deejai ||

The Creator Lord knows everything, although they may try to hide their sins and the causes of their diseases.

ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੧੮॥

जिना नानक गुरमुखि हिरदा सुधु है हरि भगति हरि लीजै ॥४॥११॥१८॥

Jinaa naanak guramukhi hiradaa sudhu hai hari bhagati hari leejai ||4||11||18||

O Nanak, those Gurmukhs whose hearts are pure, obtain the Lord, Har, Har, by devotional worship. ||4||11||18||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Aasaa mahalaa 4 ||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:

ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिन अंतरि हरि हरि प्रीति है ते जन सुघड़ सिआणे राम राजे ॥

Jin anttari hari hari preeti hai te jan sugha(rr) siaa(nn)e raam raaje ||

Those whose hearts are filled with the love of the Lord, Har, Har, are the wisest and most clever people, O Lord King.

ਜੇ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਭੁਲਿ ਚੁਕਿ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਭੀ ਖਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥

जे बाहरहु भुलि चुकि बोलदे भी खरे हरि भाणे ॥

Je baaharahu bhuli chuki bolade bhee khare hari bhaa(nn)e ||

Even if they misspeak outwardly, they are still very pleasing to the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਾ ਨੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਥਾਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ॥

हरि संता नो होरु थाउ नाही हरि माणु निमाणे ॥

Hari santtaa no horu thaau naahee hari maa(nn)u nimaa(nn)e ||

The Lord's Saints have no other place. The Lord is the honor of the dishonored.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਣੁ ਸਤਾਣੇ ॥੧॥

जन नानक नामु दीबाणु है हरि ताणु सताणे ॥१॥

Jan naanak naamu deebaa(nn)u hai hari taa(nn)u sataa(nn)e ||1||

The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the Royal Court for servant Nanak; the Lord's power is his only power. ||1||


ਜਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिथै जाइ बहै मेरा सतिगुरू सो थानु सुहावा राम राजे ॥

Jithai jaai bahai meraa satiguroo so thaanu suhaavaa raam raaje ||

Wherever my True Guru goes and sits, that place is beautiful, O Lord King.

ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀਂ ਸੋ ਥਾਨੁ ਭਾਲਿਆ ਲੈ ਧੂਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਵਾ ॥

गुरसिखीं सो थानु भालिआ लै धूरि मुखि लावा ॥

Gurasikheen so thaanu bhaaliaa lai dhoori mukhi laavaa ||

The Guru's Sikhs seek out that place; they take the dust and apply it to their faces.

ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਥਾਇ ਪਈ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਾ ॥

गुरसिखा की घाल थाइ पई जिन हरि नामु धिआवा ॥

Gurasikhaa kee ghaal thaai paee jin hari naamu dhiaavaa ||

The works of the Guru's Sikhs, who meditate on the Lord's Name, are approved.

ਜਿਨੑ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਜਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੨॥

जिन्ह नानकु सतिगुरु पूजिआ तिन हरि पूज करावा ॥२॥

Jinh naanaku satiguru poojiaa tin hari pooj karaavaa ||2||

Those who worship the True Guru, O Nanak - the Lord causes them to be worshipped in turn. ||2||


ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

गुरसिखा मनि हरि प्रीति है हरि नाम हरि तेरी राम राजे ॥

Gurasikhaa mani hari preeti hai hari naam hari teree raam raaje ||

The Guru's Sikh keeps the Love of the Lord, and the Name of the Lord, in his mind. He loves You, O Lord, O Lord King.

ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਭੁਖ ਜਾਇ ਲਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ॥

करि सेवहि पूरा सतिगुरू भुख जाइ लहि मेरी ॥

Kari sevahi pooraa satiguroo bhukh jaai lahi meree ||

He serves the Perfect True Guru, and his hunger and self-conceit are eliminated.

ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਗਈ ਤਿਨ ਪਿਛੈ ਹੋਰ ਖਾਇ ਘਨੇਰੀ ॥

गुरसिखा की भुख सभ गई तिन पिछै होर खाइ घनेरी ॥

Gurasikhaa kee bhukh sabh gaee tin pichhai hor khaai ghaneree ||

The hunger of the Gursikh is totally eliminated; indeed, many others are satisfied through them.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੩॥

जन नानक हरि पुंनु बीजिआ फिरि तोटि न आवै हरि पुंन केरी ॥३॥

Jan naanak hari punnu beejiaa phiri toti na aavai hari punn keree ||3||

Servant Nanak has planted the Seed of the Lord's Goodness; this Goodness of the Lord shall never be exhausted. ||3||


ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਾਧਾਈਆ ਜਿਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਡਿਠਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

गुरसिखा मनि वाधाईआ जिन मेरा सतिगुरू डिठा राम राजे ॥

Gurasikhaa mani vaadhaaeeaa jin meraa satiguroo dithaa raam raaje ||

The minds of the Gursikhs rejoice, because they have seen my True Guru, O Lord King.

ਕੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਗਲ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਲਗੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਮਿਠਾ ॥

कोई करि गल सुणावै हरि नाम की सो लगै गुरसिखा मनि मिठा ॥

Koee kari gal su(nn)aavai hari naam kee so lagai gurasikhaa mani mithaa ||

If someone recites to them the story of the Lord's Name, it seems so sweet to the mind of those Gursikhs.

ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪੈਨਾਈਅਹਿ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ॥

हरि दरगह गुरसिख पैनाईअहि जिन्हा मेरा सतिगुरु तुठा ॥

Hari daragah gurasikh painaaeeahi jinhaa meraa satiguru tuthaa ||

The Gursikhs are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord; my True Guru is very pleased with them.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੧੯॥

जन नानकु हरि हरि होइआ हरि हरि मनि वुठा ॥४॥१२॥१९॥

Jan naanaku hari hari hoiaa hari hari mani vuthaa ||4||12||19||

Servant Nanak has become the Lord, Har, Har; the Lord, Har, Har, abides within his mind. ||4||12||19||

जिन्हा भेटिआ मेरा पूरा सतिगुरू तिन हरि नामु द्रिड़ावै राम राजे ॥

Jinhaa bhetiaa meraa pooraa satiguroo tin hari naamu dri(rr)aavai raam raaje ||

Those who meet my Perfect True Guru - He implants within them the Name of the Lord, the Lord King.

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥

तिस की त्रिसना भुख सभ उतरै जो हरि नामु धिआवै ॥

Tis kee trisanaa bhukh sabh utarai jo hari naamu dhiaavai ||

Those who meditate on the Lord's Name have all of their desire and hunger removed.

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

जो हरि हरि नामु धिआइदे तिन्ह जमु नेड़ि न आवै ॥

Jo hari hari naamu dhiaaide tinh jamu ne(rr)i na aavai ||

Those who meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har - the Messenger of Death cannot even approach them.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਨਿਤ ਜਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

जन नानक कउ हरि क्रिपा करि नित जपै हरि नामु हरि नामि तरावै ॥१॥

Jan naanak kau hari kripaa kari nit japai hari naamu hari naami taraavai ||1||

O Lord, shower Your Mercy upon servant Nanak, that he may ever chant the Name of the Lord; through the Name of the Lord, he is saved. ||1||


ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिनी गुरमुखि नामु धिआइआ तिना फिरि बिघनु न होई राम राजे ॥

Jinee guramukhi naamu dhiaaiaa tinaa phiri bighanu na hoee raam raaje ||

Those who, as Gurmukh, meditate on the Naam, meet no obstacles in their path, O Lord King.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਪੂਜੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

जिनी सतिगुरु पुरखु मनाइआ तिन पूजे सभु कोई ॥

Jinee satiguru purakhu manaaiaa tin pooje sabhu koee ||

Those who are pleasing to the almighty True Guru are worshipped by everyone.

ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਦ ਹੋਈ ॥

जिन्ही सतिगुरु पिआरा सेविआ तिन्हा सुखु सद होई ॥

Jinhee satiguru piaaraa seviaa tinhaa sukhu sad hoee ||

Those who serve their Beloved True Guru obtain eternal peace.

ਜਿਨੑਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥੨॥

जिन्हा नानकु सतिगुरु भेटिआ तिन्हा मिलिआ हरि सोई ॥२॥

Jinhaa naanaku satiguru bhetiaa tinhaa miliaa hari soee ||2||

Those who meet the True Guru, O Nanak - the Lord Himself meets them. ||2||


ਜਿਨੑਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਤਿਨੑ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਣਹਾਰਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

जिन्हा अंतरि गुरमुखि प्रीति है तिन्ह हरि रखणहारा राम राजे ॥

Jinhaa anttari guramukhi preeti hai tinh hari rakha(nn)ahaaraa raam raaje ||

Those Gurmukhs, who are filled with His Love, have the Lord as their Saving Grace, O Lord King.

ਤਿਨੑ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਨੑ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

तिन्ह की निंदा कोई किआ करे जिन्ह हरि नामु पिआरा ॥

Tinh kee ninddaa koee kiaa kare jinh hari naamu piaaraa ||

How can anyone slander them? The Lord's Name is dear to them.

ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਸਭ ਦੁਸਟ ਝਖ ਮਾਰਾ ॥

जिन हरि सेती मनु मानिआ सभ दुसट झख मारा ॥

Jin hari setee manu maaniaa sabh dusat jhakh maaraa ||

Those whose minds are in harmony with the Lord - all their enemies attack them in vain.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥

जन नानक नामु धिआइआ हरि रखणहारा ॥३॥

Jan naanak naamu dhiaaiaa hari rakha(nn)ahaaraa ||3||

Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Lord Protector. ||3||


ਹਰਿ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਭਗਤ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਪੈਜ ਰਖਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥

हरि जुगु जुगु भगत उपाइआ पैज रखदा आइआ राम राजे ॥

Hari jugu jugu bhagat upaaiaa paij rakhadaa aaiaa raam raaje ||

In each and every age, He creates His devotees and preserves their honor, O Lord King.

ਹਰਣਾਖਸੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਹਲਾਦੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥

हरणाखसु दुसटु हरि मारिआ प्रहलादु तराइआ ॥

Hara(nn)aakhasu dusatu hari maariaa prhalaadu taraaiaa ||

The Lord killed the wicked Harnaakhash, and saved Prahlaad.

ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਿੰਦਕਾ ਪਿਠਿ ਦੇਇ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

अहंकारीआ निंदका पिठि देइ नामदेउ मुखि लाइआ ॥

Ahankkaareeaa ninddakaa pithi dei naamadeu mukhi laaiaa ||

He turned his back on the egotists and slanderers, and showed His Face to Naam Dayv.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਅੰਤਿ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੩॥੨੦॥

जन नानक ऐसा हरि सेविआ अंति लए छडाइआ ॥४॥१३॥२०॥

Jan naanak aisaa hari seviaa antti lae chhadaaiaa ||4||13||20||

Servant Nanak has so served the Lord, that He will deliver him in the end. ||4||13||20||
