ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੪॥

मै धनु दीजै हरि अम्रित नामु ॥४॥

Mai dhanu deejai hari ammmrit naamu ||4||

Grant me, O Lord, the wealth of Your Ambrosial Naam. ||4||


ਰਯਤਿ ਮਹਰ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੈ ॥

रयति महर मुकदम सिकदारै ॥

Rayati mahar mukadam sikadaarai ||

The people, rulers, leaders and chiefs

ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਦਿਸੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥

निहचलु कोइ न दिसै संसारै ॥

Nihachalu koi na disai sanssaarai ||

None of them shall be able to remain in the world.

ਅਫਰਿਉ ਕਾਲੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੈ ॥੫॥

अफरिउ कालु कूड़ु सिरि मारै ॥५॥

Aphariu kaalu koo(rr)u siri maarai ||5||

Death is inevitable; it strikes the heads of the false. ||5||


ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

निहचलु एकु सचा सचु सोई ॥

Nihachalu eku sachaa sachu soee ||

Only the One Lord, the Truest of the True, is permanent.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਸਭ ਗੋਈ ॥

जिनि करि साजी तिनहि सभ गोई ॥

Jini kari saajee tinahi sabh goee ||

He who created and fashioned everything, shall destroy it.

ਓਹੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਪੈ ਤਾਂ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥

ओहु गुरमुखि जापै तां पति होई ॥६॥

Ohu guramukhi jaapai taan pati hoee ||6||

One who becomes Gurmukh and meditates on the Lord is honored. ||6||


ਕਾਜੀ ਸੇਖ ਭੇਖ ਫਕੀਰਾ ॥

काजी सेख भेख फकीरा ॥

Kaajee sekh bhekh phakeeraa ||

The Qazis, Shaykhs and Fakeers in religious robes

ਵਡੇ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਪੀਰਾ ॥

वडे कहावहि हउमै तनि पीरा ॥

Vade kahaavahi haumai tani peeraa ||

Call themselves great; but through their egotism, their bodies are suffering in pain.

ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੭॥

कालु न छोडै बिनु सतिगुर की धीरा ॥७॥

Kaalu na chhodai binu satigur kee dheeraa ||7||

Death does not spare them, without the Support of the True Guru. ||7||


ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਅਰੁ ਨੈਣੀ ॥

कालु जालु जिहवा अरु नैणी ॥

Kaalu jaalu jihavaa aru nai(nn)ee ||

The trap of Death is hanging over their tongues and eyes.

ਕਾਨੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੈਣੀ ॥

कानी कालु सुणै बिखु बैणी ॥

Kaanee kaalu su(nn)ai bikhu bai(nn)ee ||

Death is over their ears, when they hear talk of evil.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥

बिनु सबदै मूठे दिनु रैणी ॥८॥

Binu sabadai moothe dinu rai(nn)ee ||8||

Without the Shabad, they are plundered, day and night. ||8||


ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥

हिरदै साचु वसै हरि नाइ ॥

Hiradai saachu vasai hari naai ||

To those whose hearts are filled with the True Name of the Lord,

ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹਿ ਸਕੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥

कालु न जोहि सकै गुण गाइ ॥

Kaalu na johi sakai gu(nn) gaai ||

and who sing the Glories of God, the death cannot touch.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੯॥੧੪॥

नानक गुरमुखि सबदि समाइ ॥९॥१४॥

Naanak guramukhi sabadi samaai ||9||14||

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is absorbed in the Word of the Shabad. ||9||14||

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਬੋਲਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਈ ॥

बोलहि साचु मिथिआ नही राई ॥

Bolahi saachu mithiaa nahee raaee ||

They speak the Truth - not an iota of falsehood.

ਚਾਲਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

चालहि गुरमुखि हुकमि रजाई ॥

Chaalahi guramukhi hukami rajaaee ||

The Gurmukhs walk in the Way of the Lord's Command.

ਰਹਹਿ ਅਤੀਤ ਸਚੇ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥

रहहि अतीत सचे सरणाई ॥१॥

Rahahi ateet sache sara(nn)aaee ||1||

They remain unattached, in the Sanctuary of the True Lord. ||1||


ਸਚ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸੈ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ॥

सच घरि बैसै कालु न जोहै ॥

Sach ghari baisai kaalu na johai ||

They dwell in their true home, and Death does not touch them.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਉ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਵਤ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

मनमुख कउ आवत जावत दुखु मोहै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Manamukh kau aavat jaavat dukhu mohai ||1|| rahaau ||

The self-willed manmukhs come and go, in the pain of emotional attachment. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਅਉ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥

अपिउ पीअउ अकथु कथि रहीऐ ॥

Apiu peeau akathu kathi raheeai ||

So, drink deeply of this Nectar, and speak the Unspoken Speech.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥

निज घरि बैसि सहज घरु लहीऐ ॥

Nij ghari baisi sahaj gharu laheeai ||

Dwelling in the home of your own being within, you shall find the home of intuitive peace.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਾਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੨॥

हरि रसि माते इहु सुखु कहीऐ ॥२॥

Hari rasi maate ihu sukhu kaheeai ||2||

One who is imbued with the Lord's sublime essence, is said to experience this peace. ||2||


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਚਾਲ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਨਹੀ ਡੋਲੈ ॥

गुरमति चाल निहचल नही डोलै ॥

Guramati chaal nihachal nahee dolai ||

Following the Guru's Teachings, one becomes perfectly stable, and never wavers.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ॥

गुरमति साचि सहजि हरि बोलै ॥

Guramati saachi sahaji hari bolai ||

Following the Guru's Teachings, one intuitively chants the Name of the True Lord.

ਪੀਵੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥੩॥

पीवै अम्रितु ततु विरोलै ॥३॥

Peevai ammmritu tatu virolai ||3||

Drinking in this Ambrosial Nectar, and churning it, the essential reality is discerned. ||3||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੀਨੀ ॥

सतिगुरु देखिआ दीखिआ लीनी ॥

Satiguru dekhiaa deekhiaa leenee ||

Beholding the True Guru, I have received His Teachings.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਅਰਪਿਓ ਅੰਤਰ ਗਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥

मनु तनु अरपिओ अंतर गति कीनी ॥

Manu tanu arapio anttar gati keenee ||

I have offered my mind and body, after searching deep within my own being.

ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨੀ ॥੪॥

गति मिति पाई आतमु चीनी ॥४॥

Gati miti paaee aatamu cheenee ||4||

I have come to realize the value of understanding my own soul. ||4||


ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥

भोजनु नामु निरंजन सारु ॥

Bhojanu naamu niranjjan saaru ||

The Naam, the Name of the Immaculate Lord, is the most excellent and sublime food.

ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

परम हंसु सचु जोति अपार ॥

Param hanssu sachu joti apaar ||

The pure swan-souls see the True Light of the Infinite Lord.

ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੫॥

जह देखउ तह एकंकारु ॥५॥

Jah dekhau tah ekankkaaru ||5||

Wherever I look, I see the One and Only Lord. ||5||


ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਏਕਾ ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ॥

रहै निरालमु एका सचु करणी ॥

Rahai niraalamu ekaa sachu kara(nn)ee ||

One who remains pure and unblemished and practices only true deeds,

ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ॥

परम पदु पाइआ सेवा गुर चरणी ॥

Param padu paaiaa sevaa gur chara(nn)ee ||

Obtains the supreme status, serving at the Guru's Feet.

ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਚੂਕੀ ਅਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਮਣੀ ॥੬॥

मन ते मनु मानिआ चूकी अहं भ्रमणी ॥६॥

Man te manu maaniaa chookee ahann bhrma(nn)ee ||6||

The mind is reconciliated with the mind, and the ego's wandering ways come to an end. ||6||


ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਤਾਰਿਆ ॥

इन बिधि कउणु कउणु नही तारिआ ॥

In bidhi kau(nn)u kau(nn)u nahee taariaa ||

In this way, who - who has not been saved?

ਹਰਿ ਜਸਿ ਸੰਤ ਭਗਤ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਿਆ ॥

हरि जसि संत भगत निसतारिआ ॥

Hari jasi santt bhagat nisataariaa ||

The Lord's Praises have saved His Saints and devotees.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਏ ਹਮ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਰਿਆ ॥੭॥

प्रभ पाए हम अवरु न भारिआ ॥७॥

Prbh paae ham avaru na bhaariaa ||7||

I have found God - I am not searching for any other. ||7||


ਸਾਚ ਮਹਲਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥

साच महलि गुरि अलखु लखाइआ ॥

Saach mahali guri alakhu lakhaaiaa ||

The Guru has shown me the unseen Mansion of the True Lord.

ਨਿਹਚਲ ਮਹਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਛਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

निहचल महलु नही छाइआ माइआ ॥

Nihachal mahalu nahee chhaaiaa maaiaa ||

His Mansion is eternal and unchanging; it is not a mere reflection of Maya.

ਸਾਚਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੮॥

साचि संतोखे भरमु चुकाइआ ॥८॥

Saachi santtokhe bharamu chukaaiaa ||8||

Through truth and contentment, doubt is dispelled. ||8||


ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

जिन कै मनि वसिआ सचु सोई ॥

Jin kai mani vasiaa sachu soee ||

That person, within whose mind the True Lord dwells

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

तिन की संगति गुरमुखि होई ॥

Tin kee sanggati guramukhi hoee ||

In his company, one becomes Gurmukh.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਲੁ ਖੋਈ ॥੯॥੧੫॥

नानक साचि नामि मलु खोई ॥९॥१५॥

Naanak saachi naami malu khoee ||9||15||

O Nanak, the True Name washes off the pollution. ||9||15||


ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਰਾਮਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਰਾਪੈ ਜਾ ਕਾ ॥

रामि नामि चितु रापै जा का ॥

Raami naami chitu raapai jaa kaa ||

One whose consciousness is permeated with the Lord's Name

ਉਪਜੰਪਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਤਾ ਕਾ ॥੧॥

उपज्मपि दरसनु कीजै ता का ॥१॥

Upajamppi darasanu keejai taa kaa ||1||

- receive the blessing of his darshan in the early light of dawn. ||1||


ਰਾਮ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥

राम न जपहु अभागु तुमारा ॥

Raam na japahu abhaagu tumaaraa ||

If you do not meditate on the Lord, it is your own misfortune.

ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जुगि जुगि दाता प्रभु रामु हमारा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jugi jugi daataa prbhu raamu hamaaraa ||1|| rahaau ||

In each and every age, the Great Giver is my Lord God. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥

गुरमति रामु जपै जनु पूरा ॥

Guramati raamu japai janu pooraa ||

Following the Guru's Teachings, the perfect humble beings meditate on the Lord.

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਅਨਹਤ ਬਾਜੇ ਤੂਰਾ ॥੨॥

तितु घट अनहत बाजे तूरा ॥२॥

Titu ghat anahat baaje tooraa ||2||

Within their hearts, the unstruck melody vibrates. ||2||


ਜੋ ਜਨ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

जो जन राम भगति हरि पिआरि ॥

Jo jan raam bhagati hari piaari ||

Those who worship the Lord and love the Lord

ਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

से प्रभि राखे किरपा धारि ॥३॥

Se prbhi raakhe kirapaa dhaari ||3||

- showering His Mercy, God protects them. ||3||


ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੋਈ ॥

जिन कै हिरदै हरि हरि सोई ॥

Jin kai hiradai hari hari soee ||

Those whose hearts are filled with the Lord, Har, Har

ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਰਸਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥

तिन का दरसु परसि सुखु होई ॥४॥

Tin kaa darasu parasi sukhu hoee ||4||

- gazing upon the blessed vision of their darshan, peace is obtained. ||4||


ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਵੈ ॥

सरब जीआ महि एको रवै ॥

Sarab jeeaa mahi eko ravai ||

Among all beings, the One Lord is pervading.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਭਵੈ ॥੫॥

मनमुखि अहंकारी फिरि जूनी भवै ॥५॥

Manamukhi ahankkaaree phiri joonee bhavai ||5||

The egotistical, self-willed manmukhs wander in reincarnation. ||5||


ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

सो बूझै जो सतिगुरु पाए ॥

So boojhai jo satiguru paae ||

They alone understand, who have found the True Guru.

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਏ ॥੬॥

हउमै मारे गुर सबदे पाए ॥६॥

Haumai maare gur sabade paae ||6||

Subduing their ego, they receive the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||6||


ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

अरध उरध की संधि किउ जानै ॥

Aradh uradh kee sanddhi kiu jaanai ||

How can anyone know of the Union between the being below and the Supreme Being above?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੭॥

गुरमुखि संधि मिलै मनु मानै ॥७॥

Guramukhi sanddhi milai manu maanai ||7||

The Gurmukhs obtain this Union; their minds are reconciliated. ||7||


ਹਮ ਪਾਪੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਰੀਐ ॥

हम पापी निरगुण कउ गुणु करीऐ ॥

Ham paapee niragu(nn) kau gu(nn)u kareeai ||

I am a worthless sinner, without merit. What merit do I have?

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਤਰੀਐ ॥੮॥੧੬॥

प्रभ होइ दइआलु नानक जन तरीऐ ॥८॥१६॥

Prbh hoi daiaalu naanak jan tareeai ||8||16||

When God showers His Mercy, servant Nanak is emancipated. ||8||16||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਿਉ ਗਾਈ ਕਉ ਗੋਇਲੀ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥

जिउ गाई कउ गोइली राखहि करि सारा ॥

Jiu gaaee kau goilee raakhahi kari saaraa ||

As the dairy farmer watches over and protects his cows,

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪਾਲਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਆਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥

अहिनिसि पालहि राखि लेहि आतम सुखु धारा ॥१॥

Ahinisi paalahi raakhi lehi aatam sukhu dhaaraa ||1||

so does the Lord cherish and protect us, night and day. He blesses the soul with peace. ||1||


ਇਤ ਉਤ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥

इत उत राखहु दीन दइआला ॥

It ut raakhahu deen daiaalaa ||

Please protect me here and hereafter, O Lord, Merciful to the meek.

ਤਉ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तउ सरणागति नदरि निहाला ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Tau sara(nn)aagati nadari nihaalaa ||1|| rahaau ||

I seek Your Sanctuary; please bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||1||Pause||


ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਰਵਿ ਰਹੇ ਰਖੁ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰਾ ॥

जह देखउ तह रवि रहे रखु राखनहारा ॥

Jah dekhau tah ravi rahe rakhu raakhanahaaraa ||

Wherever I look, there You are. Save me, O Savior Lord!

ਤੂੰ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

तूं दाता भुगता तूंहै तूं प्राण अधारा ॥२॥

Toonn daataa bhugataa toonhhai toonn praa(nn) adhaaraa ||2||

You are the Giver, and You are the Enjoyer; You are the Support of the breath of life. ||2||


ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਅਧ ਊਰਧੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

किरतु पइआ अध ऊरधी बिनु गिआन बीचारा ॥

Kiratu paiaa adh uradhee binu giaan beechaaraa ||

According to the karma of past actions, people descend to the depths or rise to the heights, unless they contemplate spiritual wisdom.

ਬਿਨੁ ਉਪਮਾ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਕੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੩॥

बिनु उपमा जगदीस की बिनसै न अंधिआरा ॥३॥

Binu upamaa jagadees kee binasai na anddhiaaraa ||3||

Without the Praises of the Lord of the Universe, the darkness is not dispelled. ||3||


ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸਤ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਲੋਭੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥

जगु बिनसत हम देखिआ लोभे अहंकारा ॥

Jagu binasat ham dekhiaa lobhe ahankkaaraa ||

I have seen the world being destroyed by greed and egotism.

ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਚੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥

गुर सेवा प्रभु पाइआ सचु मुकति दुआरा ॥४॥

Gur sevaa prbhu paaiaa sachu mukati duaaraa ||4||

Only by serving the Guru is God obtained, and the true gate of liberation found. ||4||


ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਪਾਰ ਕੋ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋਈ ॥

निज घरि महलु अपार को अपर्मपरु सोई ॥

Nij ghari mahalu apaar ko aparampparu soee ||

The Mansion of the Infinite Lord's Presence is within the home of one's own being. He is beyond any boundaries.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥

बिनु सबदै थिरु को नही बूझै सुखु होई ॥५॥

Binu sabadai thiru ko nahee boojhai sukhu hoee ||5||

Without the Word of the Shabad, nothing shall endure. Through understanding, peace is obtained. ||5||


ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਲੇ ਜਾਇ ਕਿਆ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਜਮ ਜਾਲਾ ॥

किआ लै आइआ ले जाइ किआ फासहि जम जाला ॥

Kiaa lai aaiaa le jaai kiaa phaasahi jam jaalaa ||

What have you brought, and what will you take away, when you are caught by the noose of Death?

ਡੋਲੁ ਬਧਾ ਕਸਿ ਜੇਵਰੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਪਤਾਲਾ ॥੬॥

डोलु बधा कसि जेवरी आकासि पताला ॥६॥

Dolu badhaa kasi jevaree aakaasi pataalaa ||6||

Like the bucket tied to the rope in the well, you are pulled up to the Akaashic Ethers, and then lowered down to the nether regions of the underworld. ||6||


ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥

गुरमति नामु न वीसरै सहजे पति पाईऐ ॥

Guramati naamu na veesarai sahaje pati paaeeai ||

Follow the Guru's Teachings, and do not forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; you shall automatically obtain honor.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੭॥

अंतरि सबदु निधानु है मिलि आपु गवाईऐ ॥७॥

Anttari sabadu nidhaanu hai mili aapu gavaaeeai ||7||

Deep within the self is the treasure of the Shabad; it is obtained only by eradicating selfishness and conceit. ||7||


ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਣੀ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

नदरि करे प्रभु आपणी गुण अंकि समावै ॥

Nadari kare prbhu aapa(nn)ee gu(nn) ankki samaavai ||

When God bestows His Glance of Grace, people settle in the Lap of the Virtuous Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੮॥੧॥੧੭॥

नानक मेलु न चूकई लाहा सचु पावै ॥८॥१॥१७॥

Naanak melu na chookaee laahaa sachu paavai ||8||1||17||

O Nanak, this Union cannot be broken; the true profit is obtained. ||8||1||17||

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੂਝਿ ਲੇ ਤਉ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇਰਾ ॥

गुर परसादी बूझि ले तउ होइ निबेरा ॥

Gur parasaadee boojhi le tau hoi niberaa ||

By Guru's Grace one comes to understand and then, the account is settled.

ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ਸੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ॥੧॥

घरि घरि नामु निरंजना सो ठाकुरु मेरा ॥१॥

Ghari ghari naamu niranjjanaa so thaakuru meraa ||1||

In each and every heart is the Name of the Immaculate Lord; He is my Lord and Master. ||1||


ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

बिनु गुर सबद न छूटीऐ देखहु वीचारा ॥

Binu gur sabad na chhooteeai dekhahu veechaaraa ||

Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, no one is emancipated. See this, and reflect upon it.

ਜੇ ਲਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जे लख करम कमावही बिनु गुर अंधिआरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Je lakh karam kamaavahee binu gur anddhiaaraa ||1|| rahaau ||

Even though you may perform hundreds of thousands of rituals, without the Guru, there is only darkness. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅੰਧੇ ਅਕਲੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

अंधे अकली बाहरे किआ तिन सिउ कहीऐ ॥

Anddhe akalee baahare kiaa tin siu kaheeai ||

What can you say, to one who is blind and without wisdom?

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੰਥੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਈ ਕਿਤੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਿਰਬਹੀਐ ॥੨॥

बिनु गुर पंथु न सूझई कितु बिधि निरबहीऐ ॥२॥

Binu gur pantthu na soojhaee kitu bidhi nirabaheeai ||2||

Without the Guru, the Path cannot be seen. How can anyone proceed? ||2||


ਖੋਟੇ ਕਉ ਖਰਾ ਕਹੈ ਖਰੇ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

खोटे कउ खरा कहै खरे सार न जाणै ॥

Khote kau kharaa kahai khare saar na jaa(nn)ai ||

He calls the counterfeit genuine, and does not know the value of the genuine.

ਅੰਧੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਵਿਡਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

अंधे का नाउ पारखू कली काल विडाणै ॥३॥

Anddhe kaa naau paarakhoo kalee kaal vidaa(nn)ai ||3||

The blind man is known as an appraiser; this Dark Age of Kali Yuga is so strange! ||3||


ਸੂਤੇ ਕਉ ਜਾਗਤੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਾਗਤ ਕਉ ਸੂਤਾ ॥

सूते कउ जागतु कहै जागत कउ सूता ॥

Soote kau jaagatu kahai jaagat kau sootaa ||

The sleeper is said to be awake, and those who are awake are like sleepers.

ਜੀਵਤ ਕਉ ਮੂਆ ਕਹੈ ਮੂਏ ਨਹੀ ਰੋਤਾ ॥੪॥

जीवत कउ मूआ कहै मूए नही रोता ॥४॥

Jeevat kau mooaa kahai mooe nahee rotaa ||4||

The living are said to be dead, and no one mourns for those who have died. ||4||


ਆਵਤ ਕਉ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਹੈ ਜਾਤੇ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥

आवत कउ जाता कहै जाते कउ आइआ ॥

Aavat kau jaataa kahai jaate kau aaiaa ||

One who is coming is said to be going, and one who is gone is said to have come.

ਪਰ ਕੀ ਕਉ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਕਹੈ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੫॥

पर की कउ अपुनी कहै अपुनो नही भाइआ ॥५॥

Par kee kau apunee kahai apuno nahee bhaaiaa ||5||

That which belongs to others, he calls his own, but he has no liking for that which is his. ||5||


ਮੀਠੇ ਕਉ ਕਉੜਾ ਕਹੈ ਕੜੂਏ ਕਉ ਮੀਠਾ ॥

मीठे कउ कउड़ा कहै कड़ूए कउ मीठा ॥

Meethe kau kau(rr)aa kahai ka(rr)ooe kau meethaa ||

That which is sweet is said to be bitter, and the bitter is said to be sweet.

ਰਾਤੇ ਕੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਐਸਾ ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੬॥

राते की निंदा करहि ऐसा कलि महि डीठा ॥६॥

Raate kee ninddaa karahi aisaa kali mahi deethaa ||6||

One who is imbued with the Lord's Love is slandered - his is what I have seen in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. ||6||


ਚੇਰੀ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੀਸੈ ॥

चेरी की सेवा करहि ठाकुरु नही दीसै ॥

Cheree kee sevaa karahi thaakuru nahee deesai ||

He serves the maid, and does not see his Lord and Master.

ਪੋਖਰੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੀਐ ਮਾਖਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਰੀਸੈ ॥੭॥

पोखरु नीरु विरोलीऐ माखनु नही रीसै ॥७॥

Pokharu neeru viroleeai maakhanu nahee reesai ||7||

Churning the water in the pond, no butter is produced. ||7||


ਇਸੁ ਪਦ ਜੋ ਅਰਥਾਇ ਲੇਇ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਮਾਰਾ ॥

इसु पद जो अरथाइ लेइ सो गुरू हमारा ॥

Isu pad jo arathaai lei so guroo hamaaraa ||

One who understands the meaning of this verse is my Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਸੋ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੮॥

नानक चीनै आप कउ सो अपर अपारा ॥८॥

Naanak cheenai aap kau so apar apaaraa ||8||

O Nanak, one who knows his own self, is infinite and incomparable. ||8||


ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥

सभु आपे आपि वरतदा आपे भरमाइआ ॥

Sabhu aape aapi varatadaa aape bharamaaiaa ||

He Himself is All-pervading; He Himself misleads the people.

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੯॥੨॥੧੮॥

गुर किरपा ते बूझीऐ सभु ब्रहमु समाइआ ॥९॥२॥१८॥

Gur kirapaa te boojheeai sabhu brhamu samaaiaa ||9||2||18||

By Guru's Grace, one comes to understand, that God is contained in all. ||9||2||18||


ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिनामु करता पुरखु गुरप्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satinaamu karataa purakhu guraprsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. By Guru's Grace:

ਰਾਗੁ ਗਉੜੀ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

रागु गउड़ी पूरबी छंत महला १ ॥

Raagu gau(rr)ee poorabee chhantt mahalaa 1 ||

Raag Gauree Poorbee, Chhant, First Mehl:

ਮੁੰਧ ਰੈਣਿ ਦੁਹੇਲੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥

मुंध रैणि दुहेलड़ीआ जीउ नीद न आवै ॥

Munddh rai(nn)i duhela(rr)eeaa jeeu need na aavai ||

For the bride, the night is painful; sleep does not come.

ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦੁਬਲੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਹਾਵੈ ॥

सा धन दुबलीआ जीउ पिर कै हावै ॥

Saa dhan dubaleeaa jeeu pir kai haavai ||

The soul-bride has grown weak, in the pain of separation from her Husband Lord.

ਧਨ ਥੀਈ ਦੁਬਲਿ ਕੰਤ ਹਾਵੈ ਕੇਵ ਨੈਣੀ ਦੇਖਏ ॥

धन थीई दुबलि कंत हावै केव नैणी देखए ॥

Dhan theeee dubali kantt haavai kev nai(nn)ee dekhae ||

The soul-bride is wasting away, in the pain of separation from her Husband; how can she see Him with her eyes?

ਸੀਗਾਰ ਮਿਠ ਰਸ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਜਨ ਸਭੁ ਝੂਠੁ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਏ ॥

सीगार मिठ रस भोग भोजन सभु झूठु कितै न लेखए ॥

Seegaar mith ras bhog bhojan sabhu jhoothu kitai na lekhae ||

Her decorations, sweet foods, sensuous pleasures and delicacies are all false; they are of no account at all.

ਮੈ ਮਤ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਾਲੀ ਦੁਧਾ ਥਣੀ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥

मै मत जोबनि गरबि गाली दुधा थणी न आवए ॥

Mai mat jobani garabi gaalee dudhaa tha(nn)ee na aavae ||

Intoxicated with the wine of youthful pride, she has been ruined, and her breasts no longer yield milk.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਆਵਏ ॥੧॥

नानक सा धन मिलै मिलाई बिनु पिर नीद न आवए ॥१॥

Naanak saa dhan milai milaaee binu pir need na aavae ||1||

O Nanak, the soul-bride meets her Husband Lord, when He causes her to meet Him; without Him, sleep does not come to her. ||1||


ਮੁੰਧ ਨਿਮਾਨੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਧਨੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

मुंध निमानड़ीआ जीउ बिनु धनी पिआरे ॥

Munddh nimaana(rr)eeaa jeeu binu dhanee piaare ||

The bride is dishonored without her Beloved Husband Lord.

ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈਗੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

किउ सुखु पावैगी बिनु उर धारे ॥

Kiu sukhu paavaigee binu ur dhaare ||

How can she find peace, without enshrining Him in her heart?

ਨਾਹ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਆ ॥

नाह बिनु घर वासु नाही पुछहु सखी सहेलीआ ॥

Naah binu ghar vaasu naahee puchhahu sakhee saheleeaa ||

Without her Husband, her home is not worth living in; go and ask your sisters and companions.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਵਸਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ॥

बिनु नाम प्रीति पिआरु नाही वसहि साचि सुहेलीआ ॥

Binu naam preeti piaaru naahee vasahi saachi suheleeaa ||

Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, there is no love and affection; but with her True Lord, she abides in peace.

ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਸਜਨ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹੁ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

सचु मनि सजन संतोखि मेला गुरमती सहु जाणिआ ॥

Sachu mani sajan santtokhi melaa guramatee sahu jaa(nn)iaa ||

Through mental truthfulness and contentment, union with the True Friend is attained; through the Guru's Teachings, the Husband Lord is known.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਣੀਆ ॥੨॥

नानक नामु न छोडै सा धन नामि सहजि समाणीआ ॥२॥

Naanak naamu na chhodai saa dhan naami sahaji samaa(nn)eeaa ||2||

O Nanak, that soul-bride who does not abandon the Naam, is intuitively absorbed in the Naam. ||2||


ਮਿਲੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੜੀਹੋ ਹਮ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇਹਾ ॥

मिलु सखी सहेलड़ीहो हम पिरु रावेहा ॥

Milu sakhee sahela(rr)eeho ham piru raavehaa ||

Come, O my sisters and companions - let's enjoy our Husband Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪੁਛਿ ਲਿਖਉਗੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਨੇਹਾ ॥

गुर पुछि लिखउगी जीउ सबदि सनेहा ॥

Gur puchhi likhaugee jeeu sabadi sanehaa ||

I will ask the Guru, and write His Word as my love-note.

ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀਆ ॥

सबदु साचा गुरि दिखाइआ मनमुखी पछुताणीआ ॥

Sabadu saachaa guri dikhaaiaa manamukhee pachhutaa(nn)eeaa ||

The Guru has shown me the True Word of the Shabad. The self-willed manmukhs will regret and repent.

ਨਿਕਸਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਰਹੈ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜਾਮਿ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥

निकसि जातउ रहै असथिरु जामि सचु पछाणिआ ॥

Nikasi jaatau rahai asathiru jaami sachu pachhaa(nn)iaa ||

My wandering mind became steady, when I recognized the True One.

ਸਾਚ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਉਤਨ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੇਹੁ ਨਵੇਲਓ ॥

साच की मति सदा नउतन सबदि नेहु नवेलओ ॥

Saach kee mati sadaa nautan sabadi nehu navelo ||

The Teachings of Truth are forever new; the love of the Shabad is forever fresh.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀਹੋ ॥੩॥

नानक नदरी सहजि साचा मिलहु सखी सहेलीहो ॥३॥

Naanak nadaree sahaji saachaa milahu sakhee saheleeho ||3||

O Nanak, through the Glance of Grace of the True Lord, celestial peace is obtained; let's meet Him, O my sisters and companions. ||3||


ਮੇਰੀ ਇਛ ਪੁਨੀ ਜੀਉ ਹਮ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥

मेरी इछ पुनी जीउ हम घरि साजनु आइआ ॥

Meree ichh punee jeeu ham ghari saajanu aaiaa ||

My desire has been fulfilled - my Friend has come to my home.

ਮਿਲਿ ਵਰੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥

मिलि वरु नारी मंगलु गाइआ ॥

Mili varu naaree manggalu gaaiaa ||

At the Union of husband and wife, the songs of rejoicing were sung.

ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਰਹਸੀ ਮੁੰਧ ਮਨਿ ਓਮਾਹਓ ॥

गुण गाइ मंगलु प्रेमि रहसी मुंध मनि ओमाहओ ॥

Gu(nn) gaai manggalu premi rahasee munddh mani omaaho ||

Singing the songs of joyful praise and love to Him, the soul-bride's mind is thrilled and delighted.

ਸਾਜਨ ਰਹੰਸੇ ਦੁਸਟ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਹਓ ॥

साजन रहंसे दुसट विआपे साचु जपि सचु लाहओ ॥

Saajan rahansse dusat viaape saachu japi sachu laaho ||

My friends are happy, and my enemies are unhappy; meditating on the True Lord, the true profit is obtained.

ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਸਿ ਭਿੰਨੀਆ ॥

कर जोड़ि सा धन करै बिनती रैणि दिनु रसि भिंनीआ ॥

Kar jo(rr)i saa dhan karai binatee rai(nn)i dinu rasi bhinneeaa ||

With her palms pressed together, the soul-bride prays, that she may remain immersed in the Love of her Lord, night and day.

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰੁ ਧਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਰਲੀਆ ਇਛ ਮੇਰੀ ਪੁੰਨੀਆ ॥੪॥੧॥

नानक पिरु धन करहि रलीआ इछ मेरी पुंनीआ ॥४॥१॥

Naanak piru dhan karahi raleeaa ichh meree punneeaa ||4||1||

O Nanak, the Husband Lord and the soul-bride revel together; my desires are fulfilled. ||4||1||


ਗਉੜੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਉ ਏਕਲੜੀ ਬਨ ਮਾਹੇ ॥

सुणि नाह प्रभू जीउ एकलड़ी बन माहे ॥

Su(nn)i naah prbhoo jeeu ekala(rr)ee ban maahe ||

Hear me, O my Dear Husband God - I am all alone in the wilderness.

ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰੈਗੀ ਨਾਹ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥

किउ धीरैगी नाह बिना प्रभ वेपरवाहे ॥

Kiu dheeraigee naah binaa prbh veparavaahe ||

How can I find comfort without You, O my Carefree Husband God?

ਧਨ ਨਾਹ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਬਿਖਮ ਰੈਣਿ ਘਣੇਰੀਆ ॥

धन नाह बाझहु रहि न साकै बिखम रैणि घणेरीआ ॥

Dhan naah baajhahu rahi na saakai bikham rai(nn)i gha(nn)ereeaa ||

The soul-bride cannot live without her Husband; the night is so painful for her.

ਨਹ ਨੀਦ ਆਵੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮੇਰੀਆ ॥

नह नीद आवै प्रेमु भावै सुणि बेनंती मेरीआ ॥

Nah need aavai premu bhaavai su(nn)i benanttee mereeaa ||

Sleep does not come. I am in love with my Beloved. Please, listen to my prayer!

ਬਾਝਹੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਏਕਲੜੀ ਕੁਰਲਾਏ ॥

बाझहु पिआरे कोइ न सारे एकलड़ी कुरलाए ॥

Baajhahu piaare koi na saare ekala(rr)ee kuralaae ||

Other than my Beloved, no one cares for me; I cry all alone in the wilderness.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥

नानक सा धन मिलै मिलाई बिनु प्रीतम दुखु पाए ॥१॥

Naanak saa dhan milai milaaee binu preetam dukhu paae ||1||

O Nanak, the bride meets Him when He causes her to meet Him; without her Beloved, she suffers in pain. ||1||


ਪਿਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਅੜੀ ਜੀਉ ਕਵਣੁ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥

पिरि छोडिअड़ी जीउ कवणु मिलावै ॥

Piri chhodia(rr)ee jeeu kava(nn)u milaavai ||

She is separated from her Husband Lord - who can unite her with Him?

ਰਸਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ॥

रसि प्रेमि मिली जीउ सबदि सुहावै ॥

Rasi premi milee jeeu sabadi suhaavai ||

Tasting His Love, she meets Him, through the Beautiful Word of His Shabad.

ਸਬਦੇ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੀਪਕ ਦੇਹ ਉਜਾਰੈ ॥

सबदे सुहावै ता पति पावै दीपक देह उजारै ॥

Sabade suhaavai taa pati paavai deepak deh ujaarai ||

Adorned with the Shabad, she obtains her Husband, and her body is illuminated with the lamp of spiritual wisdom.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਸਾਚਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰੈ ॥

सुणि सखी सहेली साचि सुहेली साचे के गुण सारै ॥

Su(nn)i sakhee sahelee saachi suhelee saache ke gu(nn) saarai ||

Listen, O my friends and companions - she who is at peace dwells upon the True Lord and His True Praises.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਾ ਪਿਰਿ ਰਾਵੀ ਬਿਗਸੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥

सतिगुरि मेली ता पिरि रावी बिगसी अम्रित बाणी ॥

Satiguri melee taa piri raavee bigasee ammmrit baa(nn)ee ||

Meeting the True Guru, she is ravished and enjoyed by her Husband Lord; she blossoms forth with the Ambrosial Word of His Bani.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਤਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਵੇ ਜਾ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣੀ ॥੨॥

नानक सा धन ता पिरु रावे जा तिस कै मनि भाणी ॥२॥

Naanak saa dhan taa piru raave jaa tis kai mani bhaa(nn)ee ||2||

O Nanak, the Husband Lord enjoys His bride when she is pleasing to His Mind. ||2||


ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਨੀਘਰੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੇ ॥

माइआ मोहणी नीघरीआ जीउ कूड़ि मुठी कूड़िआरे ॥

Maaiaa moha(nn)ee neeghareeaa jeeu koo(rr)i muthee koo(rr)iaare ||

Fascination with Maya made her homeless; the false are cheated by falsehood.

ਕਿਉ ਖੂਲੈ ਗਲ ਜੇਵੜੀਆ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

किउ खूलै गल जेवड़ीआ जीउ बिनु गुर अति पिआरे ॥

Kiu khoolai gal jeva(rr)eeaa jeeu binu gur ati piaare ||

How can the noose around her neck be untied, without the Most Beloved Guru?

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

हरि प्रीति पिआरे सबदि वीचारे तिस ही का सो होवै ॥

Hari preeti piaare sabadi veechaare tis hee kaa so hovai ||

One who loves the Beloved Lord, and reflects upon the Shabad, belongs to Him.

ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਨਾਵਣ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵੈ ॥

पुंन दान अनेक नावण किउ अंतर मलु धोवै ॥

Punn daan anek naava(nn) kiu anttar malu dhovai ||

How can giving donations to charities and countless cleansing baths wash off the filth within the heart?

ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਤਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਬੇਬਾਣੈ ॥

नाम बिना गति कोइ न पावै हठि निग्रहि बेबाणै ॥

Naam binaa gati koi na paavai hathi nigrhi bebaa(nn)ai ||

Without the Naam, no one attains salvation. Stubborn self-discipline and living in the wilderness are of no use at all.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚ ਘਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਕਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

नानक सच घरु सबदि सिञापै दुबिधा महलु कि जाणै ॥३॥

Naanak sach gharu sabadi si(ny)aapai dubidhaa mahalu ki jaa(nn)ai ||3||

O Nanak, the home of Truth is attained through the Shabad. How can the Mansion of His Presence be known through duality? ||3||


ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਜੀਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੋ ॥

तेरा नामु सचा जीउ सबदु सचा वीचारो ॥

Teraa naamu sachaa jeeu sabadu sachaa veechaaro ||

True is Your Name, O Dear Lord; True is contemplation of Your Shabad.

ਤੇਰਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਜੀਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੋ ॥

तेरा महलु सचा जीउ नामु सचा वापारो ॥

Teraa mahalu sachaa jeeu naamu sachaa vaapaaro ||

True is the Mansion of Your Presence, O Dear Lord, and True is trade in Your Name.

ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੋ ॥

नाम का वापारु मीठा भगति लाहा अनदिनो ॥

Naam kaa vaapaaru meethaa bhagati laahaa anadino ||

Trade in Your Name is very sweet; the devotees earn this profit night and day.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੋ ॥

तिसु बाझु वखरु कोइ न सूझै नामु लेवहु खिनु खिनो ॥

Tisu baajhu vakharu koi na soojhai naamu levahu khinu khino ||

Other than this, I can think of no other merchandise. So chant the Naam each and every moment.

ਪਰਖਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

परखि लेखा नदरि साची करमि पूरै पाइआ ॥

Parakhi lekhaa nadari saachee karami poorai paaiaa ||

The account is read; by the Grace of the True Lord and good karma, the Perfect Lord is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक नामु महा रसु मीठा गुरि पूरै सचु पाइआ ॥४॥२॥

Naanak naamu mahaa rasu meethaa guri poorai sachu paaiaa ||4||2||

O Nanak, the Nectar of the Name is so sweet. Through the Perfect True Guru, it is obtained. ||4||2||


ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिनामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुरप्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satinaamu karataa purakhu nirabhau niravairu akaal moorati ajoonee saibhann guraprsaadi ||

ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧ ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ॥

रागु आसा महला १ घरु १ सो दरु ॥

Raagu aasaa mahalaa 1 gharu 1 so daru ||

Raag Aasaa, First Mehl, First House, So Dar ~ That Gate:

ਸੋ ਦਰੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਹਾ ਸੋ ਘਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਬਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੇ ॥

सो दरु तेरा केहा सो घरु केहा जितु बहि सरब सम्हाले ॥

So daru teraa kehaa so gharu kehaa jitu bahi sarab samhaale ||

What is that Gate, and what is that Home, in which You sit and take care of all?

ਵਾਜੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਦ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖਾ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

वाजे तेरे नाद अनेक असंखा केते तेरे वावणहारे ॥

Vaaje tere naad anek asankkhaa kete tere vaava(nn)ahaare ||

Countless musical instruments of so many various kinds vibrate there for You; so many are the musicians there for You.

ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਾਗ ਪਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਗਾਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

केते तेरे राग परी सिउ कहीअहि केते तेरे गावणहारे ॥

Kete tere raag paree siu kaheeahi kete tere gaava(nn)ahaare ||

There are so many Ragas there for You, along with their accompanying harmonies; so many minstrels sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਪਉਣੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਧਰਮ ਦੁਆਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो पउणु पाणी बैसंतरु गावै राजा धरम दुआरे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano pau(nn)u paa(nn)ee baisanttaru gaavai raajaa dharam duaare ||

The winds sing to You, as do water and fire; the Righteous Judge of Dharma sings at Your Door.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਚਿਤੁ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो चितु गुपतु लिखि जाणनि लिखि लिखि धरमु वीचारे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano chitu gupatu likhi jaa(nn)ani likhi likhi dharamu veechaare ||

Chitar and Gupat, the recording angels of the conscious and the subconscious, sing to You; they know, and they write, and on the basis of what they write, the Lord of Dharma passes judgement.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਈਸਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਸੋਹਨਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो ईसरु ब्रहमा देवी सोहनि तेरे सदा सवारे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano eesaru brhamaa devee sohani tere sadaa savaare ||

Shiva and Brahma and the Goddess Parvaati, so beautiful and ever adorned by You, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਸਣਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो इंद्र इंद्रासणि बैठे देवतिआ दरि नाले ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano ianddr ianddraasa(nn)i baithe devatiaa dari naale ||

The Indras, seated upon their celestial thrones, with the deities at Your Gate, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਸਿਧ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਸਾਧ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो सिध समाधी अंदरि गावन्हि तुधनो साध बीचारे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano sidh samaadhee anddari gaavanhi tudhano saadh beechaare ||

The Siddhas in Samaadhi sing to You, and the Holy Saints, in their contemplative meditation, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਵੀਰ ਕਰਾਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो जती सती संतोखी गावनि तुधनो वीर करारे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano jatee satee santtokhee gaavani tudhano veer karaare ||

The celibates, the truthful and the patient beings sing to You, and the mighty warriors sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜੇ ਰਖੀਸੁਰ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਬੇਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

गावनि तुधनो पंडित पड़े रखीसुर जुगु जुगु बेदा नाले ॥

Gaavani tudhano panddit pa(rr)e rakheesur jugu jugu bedaa naale ||

The scholarly Pandits sing to You, along with the holy Rishis and the readers of the Vedas throughout the ages.

ਗਾਵਨਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਮੋਹਣੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਨਿ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥

गावनि तुधनो मोहणीआ मनु मोहनि सुरगु मछु पइआले ॥

Gaavani tudhano moha(nn)eeaa manu mohani suragu machhu paiaale ||

The Mohinis, the heavenly beauties who entice the heart in paradise, in this world and in the nether regions, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਰਤਨ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੇਰੇ ਜੇਤੇ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो रतन उपाए तेरे जेते अठसठि तीरथ नाले ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano ratan upaae tere jete athasathi teerath naale ||

The fourteen priceless jewels created by You, and the sixty-eight holy places of pilgrimage, sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਜੋਧ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਸੂਰਾ ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਖਾਣੀ ਚਾਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो जोध महाबल सूरा गावन्हि तुधनो खाणी चारे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano jodh mahaabal sooraa gaavanhi tudhano khaa(nn)ee chaare ||

The mighty warriors and the divine heroes sing to You, and the four sources of creation sing to You.

ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਖੰਡ ਮੰਡਲ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਧਾਰੇ ॥

गावन्हि तुधनो खंड मंडल ब्रहमंडा करि करि रखे तेरे धारे ॥

Gaavanhi tudhano khandd manddal brhamanddaa kari kari rakhe tere dhaare ||

The continents, the worlds and the solar systems, created and installed by Your Hand, sing to You.

ਸੇਈ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਗਾਵਨੑਿ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਨੑਿ ਰਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਸਾਲੇ ॥

सेई तुधनो गावन्हि जो तुधु भावन्हि रते तेरे भगत रसाले ॥

Seee tudhano gaavanhi jo tudhu bhaavanhi rate tere bhagat rasaale ||

They alone sing to You, who are pleasing to Your Will, and who are imbued with the nectar of Your devotional worship.

ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਗਾਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਮੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਨਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਿਆ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

होरि केते तुधनो गावनि से मै चिति न आवनि नानकु किआ बीचारे ॥

Hori kete tudhano gaavani se mai chiti na aavani naanaku kiaa beechaare ||

So many others sing to You, they do not come into my mind; how can Nanak think of them?

ਸੋਈ ਸੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੀ ਨਾਈ ॥

सोई सोई सदा सचु साहिबु साचा साची नाई ॥

Soee soee sadaa sachu saahibu saachaa saachee naaee ||

That Lord and Master - He is True, forever True; He is True, and True is His Name.

ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਜਾਸੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਾਈ ॥

है भी होसी जाइ न जासी रचना जिनि रचाई ॥

Hai bhee hosee jaai na jaasee rachanaa jini rachaaee ||

He who created the creation is True, and He shall always be True; He shall not depart, even when the creation departs.

ਰੰਗੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਭਾਤੀ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥

रंगी रंगी भाती जिनसी माइआ जिनि उपाई ॥

Ranggee ranggee bhaatee jinasee maaiaa jini upaaee ||

He created the world of Maya with its various colors and species.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਜਿਉ ਤਿਸ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

करि करि देखै कीता अपणा जिउ तिस दी वडिआई ॥

Kari kari dekhai keetaa apa(nn)aa jiu tis dee vadiaaee ||

Having created the creation, He Himself watches over it, as it pleases His Greatness.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥

जो तिसु भावै सोई करसी फिरि हुकमु न करणा जाई ॥

Jo tisu bhaavai soee karasee phiri hukamu na kara(nn)aa jaaee ||

Whatever pleases Him, that is what He does. No one can issue any commands to Him.

ਸੋ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਹਣੁ ਰਜਾਈ ॥੧॥੧॥

सो पातिसाहु साहा पति साहिबु नानक रहणु रजाई ॥१॥१॥

So paatisaahu saahaa pati saahibu naanak raha(nn)u rajaaee ||1||1||

He is the King, the King of Kings, the Emperor of Kings! Nanak lives in surrender to His Will. ||1||1||


ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

Raag Aasaa, First Mehl, Chaupaday, Second House:

ਸੁਣਿ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ॥

सुणि वडा आखै सभ कोई ॥

Su(nn)i vadaa aakhai sabh koee ||

Hearing, everyone calls You Great,

ਕੇਵਡੁ ਵਡਾ ਡੀਠਾ ਹੋਈ ॥

केवडु वडा डीठा होई ॥

Kevadu vadaa deethaa hoee ||

But only one who has seen You, knows just how Great You are.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

कीमति पाइ न कहिआ जाइ ॥

Keemati paai na kahiaa jaai ||

No one can measure Your Worth, or describe You.

ਕਹਣੈ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥

कहणै वाले तेरे रहे समाइ ॥१॥

Kaha(nn)ai vaale tere rahe samaai ||1||

Those who describe You, remain absorbed in You. ||1||


ਵਡੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥

वडे मेरे साहिबा गहिर ग्मभीरा गुणी गहीरा ॥

Vade mere saahibaa gahir gambbheeraa gu(nn)ee gaheeraa ||

O my Great Lord and Master of Unfathomable Depth, You are the Ocean of Excellence.

ਕੋਈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਤਾ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਚੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

कोई न जाणै तेरा केता केवडु चीरा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Koee na jaa(nn)ai teraa ketaa kevadu cheeraa ||1|| rahaau ||

ਸਭਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥

सभि सुरती मिलि सुरति कमाई ॥

Sabhi suratee mili surati kamaaee ||

All the contemplators met together and practiced contemplation;

ਸਭ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

सभ कीमति मिलि कीमति पाई ॥

Sabh keemati mili keemati paaee ||

All the appraisers met together and tried to appraise You.

ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਹਾਈ ॥

गिआनी धिआनी गुर गुर हाई ॥

Giaanee dhiaanee gur gur haaee ||

The theologians, the meditators and the teachers of teachers

ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥

कहणु न जाई तेरी तिलु वडिआई ॥२॥

Kaha(nn)u na jaaee teree tilu vadiaaee ||2||

Could not express even an iota of Your Greatness. ||2||


ਸਭਿ ਸਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ॥

सभि सत सभि तप सभि चंगिआईआ ॥

Sabhi sat sabhi tap sabhi changgiaaeeaa ||

All Truth, all austerities, all goodness,

ਸਿਧਾ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ॥

सिधा पुरखा कीआ वडिआईआं ॥

Sidhaa purakhaa keeaa vadiaaeeaan ||

And the greatness of the Siddhas, the beings of perfect spiritual powers

ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥

तुधु विणु सिधी किनै न पाईआ ॥

Tudhu vi(nn)u sidhee kinai na paaeeaa ||

Without You, none has attained such spiritual powers.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈਆ ॥੩॥

करमि मिलै नाही ठाकि रहाईआ ॥३॥

Karami milai naahee thaaki rahaaeeaa ||3||

They are obtained by Your Grace; their flow cannot be blocked. ||3||


ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥

आखण वाला किआ बेचारा ॥

Aakha(nn) vaalaa kiaa bechaaraa ||

What can the helpless speaker do?

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥

सिफती भरे तेरे भंडारा ॥

Siphatee bhare tere bhanddaaraa ||

Your bounties are overflowing with Your Praises.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ॥

जिसु तूं देहि तिसै किआ चारा ॥

Jisu toonn dehi tisai kiaa chaaraa ||

And the one, unto whom You give - why should he think of any other?

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

नानक सचु सवारणहारा ॥४॥१॥

Naanak sachu savaara(nn)ahaaraa ||4||1||

O Nanak, the True Lord is the Embellisher. ||4||1||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਆਖਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥

आखा जीवा विसरै मरि जाउ ॥

Aakhaa jeevaa visarai mari jaau ||

Chanting the Name, I live; forgetting it, I die.

ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

आखणि अउखा साचा नाउ ॥

Aakha(nn)i aukhaa saachaa naau ||

It is so difficult to chant the True Name.

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੂਖ ॥

साचे नाम की लागै भूख ॥

Saache naam kee laagai bhookh ||

If someone feels hunger for the True Name,

ਤਿਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥

तितु भूखै खाइ चलीअहि दूख ॥१॥

Titu bhookhai khaai chaleeahi dookh ||1||

Then that hunger shall consume his pains. ||1||


ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥

सो किउ विसरै मेरी माइ ॥

So kiu visarai meree maai ||

So how could I ever forget Him, O my Mother?

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साचा साहिबु साचै नाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saachaa saahibu saachai naai ||1|| rahaau ||

True is the Master, and True is His Name. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

साचे नाम की तिलु वडिआई ॥

Saache naam kee tilu vadiaaee ||

The greatness of even an iota of the True Name,

ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥

आखि थके कीमति नही पाई ॥

Aakhi thake keemati nahee paaee ||

people have grown weary of trying to appraise but they have not been able to.

ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

जे सभि मिलि कै आखण पाहि ॥

Je sabhi mili kai aakha(nn) paahi ||

Even if they were all to meet together and recount them,

ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

वडा न होवै घाटि न जाइ ॥२॥

Vadaa na hovai ghaati na jaai ||2||

You would not be made any greater or lesser. ||2||


ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਗੁ ॥

ना ओहु मरै न होवै सोगु ॥

Naa ohu marai na hovai sogu ||

He does not die - there is no reason to mourn.

ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਭੋਗੁ ॥

देंदा रहै न चूकै भोगु ॥

Dendaa rahai na chookai bhogu ||

He continues to give, but His Provisions are never exhausted.

ਗੁਣੁ ਏਹੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

गुणु एहो होरु नाही कोइ ॥

Gu(nn)u eho horu naahee koi ||

This Glorious Virtue is His alone - no one else is like Him;

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥

ना को होआ ना को होइ ॥३॥

Naa ko hoaa naa ko hoi ||3||

There has never been anyone like Him, and there never shall be. ||3||


ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥

जेवडु आपि तेवड तेरी दाति ॥

Jevadu aapi tevad teree daati ||

As Great as You Yourself are, so Great are Your Gifts.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥

जिनि दिनु करि कै कीती राति ॥

Jini dinu kari kai keetee raati ||

It is You who created day and night as well.

ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਮਜਾਤਿ ॥

खसमु विसारहि ते कमजाति ॥

Khasamu visaarahi te kamajaati ||

Those who forget their Lord and Master are vile and despicable.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक नावै बाझु सनाति ॥४॥२॥

Naanak naavai baajhu sanaati ||4||2||

O Nanak, without the Name, people are wretched outcasts. ||4||2||

ਜੇ ਦਰਿ ਮਾਂਗਤੁ ਕੂਕ ਕਰੇ ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ॥

जे दरि मांगतु कूक करे महली खसमु सुणे ॥

Je dari maangatu kook kare mahalee khasamu su(nn)e ||

If a beggar cries out at the door, the Master hears it in His Mansion.

ਭਾਵੈ ਧੀਰਕ ਭਾਵੈ ਧਕੇ ਏਕ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥

भावै धीरक भावै धके एक वडाई देइ ॥१॥

Bhaavai dheerak bhaavai dhake ek vadaaee dei ||1||

Whether He receives him or pushes him away, it is the Gift of the Lord's Greatness. ||1||


ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਜਾਤੀ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जाणहु जोति न पूछहु जाती आगै जाति न हे ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Jaa(nn)ahu joti na poochhahu jaatee aagai jaati na he ||1|| rahaau ||

Recognize the Lord's Light within all, and do not consider social class or status; there are no classes or castes in the world hereafter. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

आपि कराए आपि करेइ ॥

Aapi karaae aapi karei ||

He Himself acts, and He Himself inspires us to act.

ਆਪਿ ਉਲਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥

आपि उलाम्हे चिति धरेइ ॥

Aapi ulaamhe chiti dharei ||

He Himself considers our complaints.

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥

जा तूं करणहारु करतारु ॥

Jaa toonn kara(nn)ahaaru karataaru ||

Since You, O Creator Lord, are the Doer,

ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੀ ਕਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

किआ मुहताजी किआ संसारु ॥२॥

Kiaa muhataajee kiaa sanssaaru ||2||

Why should I submit to the world? ||2||


ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ॥

आपि उपाए आपे देइ ॥

Aapi upaae aape dei ||

You Yourself created and You Yourself give.

ਆਪੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

आपे दुरमति मनहि करेइ ॥

Aape duramati manahi karei ||

You Yourself eliminate evil-mindedness;

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥

गुर परसादि वसै मनि आइ ॥

Gur parasaadi vasai mani aai ||

By Guru's Grace, You come to abide in our minds,

ਦੁਖੁ ਅਨੑੇਰਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

दुखु अन्हेरा विचहु जाइ ॥३॥

Dukhu anheraa vichahu jaai ||3||

And then, pain and darkness are dispelled from within. ||3||


ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

साचु पिआरा आपि करेइ ॥

Saachu piaaraa aapi karei ||

He Himself infuses love for the Truth.

ਅਵਰੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥

अवरी कउ साचु न देइ ॥

Avaree kau saachu na dei ||

Unto others, the Truth is not bestowed.

ਜੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੇਇ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਗੈ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਲੇਇ ॥੪॥੩॥

जे किसै देइ वखाणै नानकु आगै पूछ न लेइ ॥४॥३॥

Je kisai dei vakhaa(nn)ai naanaku aagai poochh na lei ||4||3||

If He bestows it upon someone, says Nanak, then, in the world hereafter, that person is not called to account. ||4||3||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਤਾਲ ਮਦੀਰੇ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਘਾਟ ॥

ताल मदीरे घट के घाट ॥

Taal madeere ghat ke ghaat ||

The urges of the heart are like cymbals and ankle-bells;

ਦੋਲਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਜ ॥

दोलक दुनीआ वाजहि वाज ॥

Dolak duneeaa vaajahi vaaj ||

The drum of the world resounds with the beat.

ਨਾਰਦੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

नारदु नाचै कलि का भाउ ॥

Naaradu naachai kali kaa bhaau ||

Naarad dances to the tune of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਕਹ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥

जती सती कह राखहि पाउ ॥१॥

Jatee satee kah raakhahi paau ||1||

Where can the celibates and the men of truth place their feet? ||1||


ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥

नानक नाम विटहु कुरबाणु ॥

Naanak naam vitahu kurabaa(nn)u ||

Nanak is a sacrifice to the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਅੰਧੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंधी दुनीआ साहिबु जाणु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anddhee duneeaa saahibu jaa(nn)u ||1|| rahaau ||

The world is blind; our Lord and Master is All-seeing. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

गुरू पासहु फिरि चेला खाइ ॥

Guroo paasahu phiri chelaa khaai ||

The disciple feeds on the Guru;

ਤਾਮਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥

तामि परीति वसै घरि आइ ॥

Taami pareeti vasai ghari aai ||

Out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵਣ ਖਾਣੁ ॥

जे सउ वर्हिआ जीवण खाणु ॥

Je sau varhiaa jeeva(nn) khaa(nn)u ||

If one were to live and eat for hundreds of years,

ਖਸਮ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

खसम पछाणै सो दिनु परवाणु ॥२॥

Khasam pachhaa(nn)ai so dinu paravaa(nn)u ||2||

That day alone would be auspicious, when he recognizes his Lord and Master. ||2||


ਦਰਸਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦਇਆ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

दरसनि देखिऐ दइआ न होइ ॥

Darasani dekhiai daiaa na hoi ||

Beholding the sight of the petitioner, compassion is not aroused.

ਲਏ ਦਿਤੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

लए दिते विणु रहै न कोइ ॥

Lae dite vi(nn)u rahai na koi ||

No one lives without give and take.

ਰਾਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਹਥਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

राजा निआउ करे हथि होइ ॥

Raajaa niaau kare hathi hoi ||

The king administers justice only if his palm is greased.

ਕਹੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥

कहै खुदाइ न मानै कोइ ॥३॥

Kahai khudaai na maanai koi ||3||

No one is moved by the Name of God. ||3||


ਮਾਣਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

माणस मूरति नानकु नामु ॥

Maa(nn)as moorati naanaku naamu ||

O Nanak, they are human beings in form and name only;

ਕਰਣੀ ਕੁਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ॥

करणी कुता दरि फुरमानु ॥

Kara(nn)ee kutaa dari phuramaanu ||

By their deeds they are dogs - this is the Command of the Lord's Court.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥

गुर परसादि जाणै मिहमानु ॥

Gur parasaadi jaa(nn)ai mihamaanu ||

By Guru's Grace, if one sees himself as a guest in this world,

ਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੪॥

ता किछु दरगह पावै मानु ॥४॥४॥

Taa kichhu daragah paavai maanu ||4||4||

Then he gains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||4||4||

ਜੇਤਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਧੁਨਿ ਤੇਤੀ ਜੇਤਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਤੇਰੀ ॥

जेता सबदु सुरति धुनि तेती जेता रूपु काइआ तेरी ॥

Jetaa sabadu surati dhuni tetee jetaa roopu kaaiaa teree ||

As much as the Shabad is in the mind, so much is Your melody; as much as the form of the universe is, so much is Your body, Lord.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਰਸਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਸਨਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਹਉ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

तूं आपे रसना आपे बसना अवरु न दूजा कहउ माई ॥१॥

Toonn aape rasanaa aape basanaa avaru na doojaa kahau maaee ||1||

You Yourself are the tongue, and You Yourself are the nose. Do not speak of any other, O my mother. ||1||


ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ॥

साहिबु मेरा एको है ॥

Saahibu meraa eko hai ||

My Lord and Master is One;

ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

एको है भाई एको है ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Eko hai bhaaee eko hai ||1|| rahaau ||

He is the One and Only; O Siblings of Destiny, He is the One alone. ||1|| Pause ||


ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਛੋਡੈ ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਦੇਇ ॥

आपे मारे आपे छोडै आपे लेवै देइ ॥

Aape maare aape chhodai aape levai dei ||

He Himself kills, and He Himself emancipates; He Himself gives and takes.

ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੨॥

आपे वेखै आपे विगसै आपे नदरि करेइ ॥२॥

Aape vekhai aape vigasai aape nadari karei ||2||

He Himself beholds, and He Himself rejoices; He Himself bestows His Glance of Grace. ||2||


ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥

जो किछु करणा सो करि रहिआ अवरु न करणा जाई ॥

Jo kichhu kara(nn)aa so kari rahiaa avaru na kara(nn)aa jaaee ||

Whatever He is to do, that is what He is doing. No one else can do anything.

ਜੈਸਾ ਵਰਤੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੩॥

जैसा वरतै तैसो कहीऐ सभ तेरी वडिआई ॥३॥

Jaisaa varatai taiso kaheeai sabh teree vadiaaee ||3||

As He projects Himself, so do we describe Him; this is all Your Glorious Greatness, Lord. ||3||


ਕਲਿ ਕਲਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਤਵਾਲਾ ਪੀਵਤੁ ਰਹੈ ॥

कलि कलवाली माइआ मदु मीठा मनु मतवाला पीवतु रहै ॥

Kali kalavaalee maaiaa madu meethaa manu matavaalaa peevatu rahai ||

The Dark Age of Kali Yuga is the bottle of wine; Maya is the sweet wine, and the intoxicated mind continues to drink it in.

ਆਪੇ ਰੂਪ ਕਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤੀਂ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਏਵ ਕਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥

आपे रूप करे बहु भांतीं नानकु बपुड़ा एव कहै ॥४॥५॥

Aape roop kare bahu bhaanteen naanaku bapu(rr)aa ev kahai ||4||5||

He Himself assumes all sorts of forms; thus poor Nanak speaks. ||4||5||

ਵਾਜਾ ਮਤਿ ਪਖਾਵਜੁ ਭਾਉ ॥

वाजा मति पखावजु भाउ ॥

Vaajaa mati pakhaavaju bhaau ||

Make your intellect your instrument, and love your tambourine;

ਹੋਇ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ॥

होइ अनंदु सदा मनि चाउ ॥

Hoi ananddu sadaa mani chaau ||

Thus bliss and lasting pleasure shall be produced in your mind.

ਏਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਏਹੋ ਤਪ ਤਾਉ ॥

एहा भगति एहो तप ताउ ॥

Ehaa bhagati eho tap taau ||

This is devotional worship, and this is the practice of penance.

ਇਤੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਾਚਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥

इतु रंगि नाचहु रखि रखि पाउ ॥१॥

Itu ranggi naachahu rakhi rakhi paau ||1||

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||1||


ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

पूरे ताल जाणै सालाह ॥

Poore taal jaa(nn)ai saalaah ||

Know that the perfect beat is the Praise of the Lord;

ਹੋਰੁ ਨਚਣਾ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਮਾਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

होरु नचणा खुसीआ मन माह ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Horu nacha(nn)aa khuseeaa man maah ||1|| rahaau ||

ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਵਜਹਿ ਦੁਇ ਤਾਲ ॥

सतु संतोखु वजहि दुइ ताल ॥

Satu santtokhu vajahi dui taal ||

Play the two cymbals of truth and contentment.

ਪੈਰੀ ਵਾਜਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥

पैरी वाजा सदा निहाल ॥

Pairee vaajaa sadaa nihaal ||

Let your ankle bells be the lasting Vision of the Lord.

ਰਾਗੁ ਨਾਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

रागु नादु नही दूजा भाउ ॥

Raagu naadu nahee doojaa bhaau ||

Let your harmony and music be the elimination of duality.

ਇਤੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਾਚਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੨॥

इतु रंगि नाचहु रखि रखि पाउ ॥२॥

Itu ranggi naachahu rakhi rakhi paau ||2||

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||2||


ਭਉ ਫੇਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨ ਚੀਤਿ ॥

भउ फेरी होवै मन चीति ॥

Bhau pheree hovai man cheeti ||

Let the fear of God within your heart and mind be your spinning dance,

ਬਹਦਿਆ ਉਠਦਿਆ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤਿ ॥

बहदिआ उठदिआ नीता नीति ॥

Bahadiaa uthadiaa neetaa neeti ||

And keep up, whether sitting or standing.

ਲੇਟਣਿ ਲੇਟਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਤਨੁ ਸੁਆਹੁ ॥

लेटणि लेटि जाणै तनु सुआहु ॥

Leta(nn)i leti jaa(nn)ai tanu suaahu ||

To roll around in the dust is to know that the body is only ashes.

ਇਤੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਾਚਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੩॥

इतु रंगि नाचहु रखि रखि पाउ ॥३॥

Itu ranggi naachahu rakhi rakhi paau ||3||

So dance in this love, and keep the beat with your feet. ||3||


ਸਿਖ ਸਭਾ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

सिख सभा दीखिआ का भाउ ॥

Sikh sabhaa deekhiaa kaa bhaau ||

Keep the company of the disciples, the students who love the teachings.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਣਣਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

गुरमुखि सुणणा साचा नाउ ॥

Guramukhi su(nn)a(nn)aa saachaa naau ||

As Gurmukh, listen to the True Name.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਰਾ ਵੇਰ ॥

नानक आखणु वेरा वेर ॥

Naanak aakha(nn)u veraa ver ||

O Nanak, chant it, over and over again.

ਇਤੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਨਾਚਹੁ ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪੈਰ ॥੪॥੬॥

इतु रंगि नाचहु रखि रखि पैर ॥४॥६॥

ਪਉਣੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੀ ਸਭ ਧਰਤੀ ਜਲ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧੁ ਕੀਆ ॥

पउणु उपाइ धरी सभ धरती जल अगनी का बंधु कीआ ॥

Pau(nn)u upaai dharee sabh dharatee jal aganee kaa banddhu keeaa ||

He created the air, and He supports the whole world; he bound water and fire together.

ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਦਹਸਿਰਿ ਮੂੰਡੁ ਕਟਾਇਆ ਰਾਵਣੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਵਡਾ ਭਇਆ ॥੧॥

अंधुलै दहसिरि मूंडु कटाइआ रावणु मारि किआ वडा भइआ ॥१॥

Anddhulai dahasiri moonddu kataaiaa raava(nn)u maari kiaa vadaa bhaiaa ||1||

The blind, ten-headed Raavan had his heads cut off, but what greatness was obtained by killing him? ||1||


ਕਿਆ ਉਪਮਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਖੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

किआ उपमा तेरी आखी जाइ ॥

Kiaa upamaa teree aakhee jaai ||

What Glories of Yours can be chanted?

ਤੂੰ ਸਰਬੇ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

तूं सरबे पूरि रहिआ लिव लाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Toonn sarabe poori rahiaa liv laai ||1|| rahaau ||

You are totally pervading everywhere; You love and cherish all. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਹਥਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਕਾਲੀ ਨਥਿ ਕਿਆ ਵਡਾ ਭਇਆ ॥

जीअ उपाइ जुगति हथि कीनी काली नथि किआ वडा भइआ ॥

Jeea upaai jugati hathi keenee kaalee nathi kiaa vadaa bhaiaa ||

You created all beings, and You hold the world in Your Hands; what greatness is it to put a ring in the nose of the black cobra, as Krishna did?

ਕਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਜੋਰੂ ਕਉਣ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੨॥

किसु तूं पुरखु जोरू कउण कहीऐ सरब निरंतरि रवि रहिआ ॥२॥

Kisu toonn purakhu joroo kau(nn) kaheeai sarab niranttari ravi rahiaa ||2||

Whose Husband are You? Who is Your wife? You are subtly diffused and pervading in all. ||2||


ਨਾਲਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਵਰਦਾਤਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਭਾਲਣ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਗਇਆ ॥

नालि कुट्मबु साथि वरदाता ब्रहमा भालण स्रिसटि गइआ ॥

Naali kutambbu saathi varadaataa brhamaa bhaala(nn) srisati gaiaa ||

Brahma, the bestower of blessings, entered the stem of the lotus, with his relatives, to find the extent of the universe.

ਆਗੈ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕੰਸੁ ਛੇਦਿ ਕਿਆ ਵਡਾ ਭਇਆ ॥੩॥

आगै अंतु न पाइओ ता का कंसु छेदि किआ वडा भइआ ॥३॥

Aagai anttu na paaio taa kaa kanssu chhedi kiaa vadaa bhaiaa ||3||

Proceeding on, he could not find its limits; what glory was obtained by killing Kansa, the king? ||3||


ਰਤਨ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੇ ਖੀਰੁ ਮਥਿਆ ਹੋਰਿ ਭਖਲਾਏ ਜਿ ਅਸੀ ਕੀਆ ॥

रतन उपाइ धरे खीरु मथिआ होरि भखलाए जि असी कीआ ॥

Ratan upaai dhare kheeru mathiaa hori bhakhalaae ji asee keeaa ||

The jewels were produced and brought forth by churning the ocean of milk. The other gods proclaimed ""We are the ones who did this!""

ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਛਪੈ ਕਿਉ ਛਪਿਆ ਏਕੀ ਏਕੀ ਵੰਡਿ ਦੀਆ ॥੪॥੭॥

कहै नानकु छपै किउ छपिआ एकी एकी वंडि दीआ ॥४॥७॥

Kahai naanaku chhapai kiu chhapiaa ekee ekee vanddi deeaa ||4||7||

Says Nanak, by hiding, how can the Lord be hidden? He has given each their share, one by one. ||4||7||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤੂਤਿ ਬੇਲਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਫਲੁ ਹੂਆ ॥

करम करतूति बेलि बिसथारी राम नामु फलु हूआ ॥

Karam karatooti beli bisathaaree raam naamu phalu hooaa ||

The vine of good actions and character has spread out, and it bears the fruit of the Lord's Name.

ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਕੀਆ ॥੧॥

तिसु रूपु न रेख अनाहदु वाजै सबदु निरंजनि कीआ ॥१॥

Tisu roopu na rekh anaahadu vaajai sabadu niranjjani keeaa ||1||

The Name has no form or outline; it vibrates with the unstruck Sound Current; through the Word of the Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is revealed. ||1||


ਕਰੇ ਵਖਿਆਣੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ॥

करे वखिआणु जाणै जे कोई ॥

Kare vakhiaa(nn)u jaa(nn)ai je koee ||

One can speak on this only when he knows it.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अम्रितु पीवै सोई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Ammmritu peevai soee ||1|| rahaau ||

He alone drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਿਨੑ ਪੀਆ ਸੇ ਮਸਤ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਤੂਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਫਾਹੇ ॥

जिन्ह पीआ से मसत भए है तूटे बंधन फाहे ॥

Jinh peeaa se masat bhae hai toote banddhan phaahe ||

Those who drink it in are enraptured; their bonds and shackles are cut away.

ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਛੋਡੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਲਾਹੇ ॥੨॥

जोती जोति समाणी भीतरि ता छोडे माइआ के लाहे ॥२॥

Jotee joti samaa(nn)ee bheetari taa chhode maaiaa ke laahe ||2||

When one's light blends into the Divine Light, then the desire for Maya is ended. ||2||


ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਰੂਪੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

सरब जोति रूपु तेरा देखिआ सगल भवन तेरी माइआ ॥

Sarab joti roopu teraa dekhiaa sagal bhavan teree maaiaa ||

Among all lights, I behold Your Form; all the worlds are Your Maya.

ਰਾਰੈ ਰੂਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਬੈਠਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਛਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

रारै रूपि निरालमु बैठा नदरि करे विचि छाइआ ॥३॥

Raarai roopi niraalamu baithaa nadari kare vichi chhaaiaa ||3||

Among the tumults and forms, He sits in serene detachment; He bestows His Glance of Grace upon those who are engrossed in the illusion. ||3||


ਬੀਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਰੂਪਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

बीणा सबदु वजावै जोगी दरसनि रूपि अपारा ॥

Bee(nn)aa sabadu vajaavai jogee darasani roopi apaaraa ||

The Yogi who plays on the instrument of the Shabad gains the Blessed Vision of the Infinitely Beautiful Lord.

ਸਬਦਿ ਅਨਾਹਦਿ ਸੋ ਸਹੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੮॥

सबदि अनाहदि सो सहु राता नानकु कहै विचारा ॥४॥८॥

Sabadi anaahadi so sahu raataa naanaku kahai vichaaraa ||4||8||

He, the Lord, is immersed in the Unstruck Shabad of the Word, says Nanak, the humble and meek. ||4||8||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

आसा महला १ ॥

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਮੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰ ॥

मै गुण गला के सिरि भार ॥

Mai gu(nn) galaa ke siri bhaar ||

My virtue is that I carry the load of my words upon my head.

ਗਲੀ ਗਲਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ॥

गली गला सिरजणहार ॥

Galee galaa siraja(nn)ahaar ||

The real words are the Words of the Creator Lord.

ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਬਾਦਿ ॥

खाणा पीणा हसणा बादि ॥

Khaa(nn)aa pee(nn)aa hasa(nn)aa baadi ||

How useless are eating, drinking and laughing,

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਯਾਦਿ ॥੧॥

जब लगु रिदै न आवहि यादि ॥१॥

Jab lagu ridai na aavahi yaadi ||1||

If the Lord is not cherished in the heart! ||1||


ਤਉ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕੇਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

तउ परवाह केही किआ कीजै ॥

Tau paravaah kehee kiaa keejai ||

Why should someone care for anything else,

ਜਨਮਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਜੀ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जनमि जनमि किछु लीजी लीजै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Janami janami kichhu leejee leejai ||1|| rahaau ||

If throughout his life, he gathers in that which is truly worth gathering? ||1|| Pause ||


ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਮਤਾਗਲੁ ਮਤਾ ॥

मन की मति मतागलु मता ॥

Man kee mati mataagalu mataa ||

The intellect of the mind is like a drunken elephant.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਖਤੋ ਖਤਾ ॥

जो किछु बोलीऐ सभु खतो खता ॥

Jo kichhu boleeai sabhu khato khataa ||

Whatever one utters is totally false, the most false of the false.

ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਲੈ ਕੀਚੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

किआ मुहु लै कीचै अरदासि ॥

Kiaa muhu lai keechai aradaasi ||

So what face should we put on to offer our prayer,

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਖੀ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੨॥

पापु पुंनु दुइ साखी पासि ॥२॥

Paapu punnu dui saakhee paasi ||2||

When both virtue and vice are close at hand as witnesses? ||2||


ਜੈਸਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੈਸਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥

जैसा तूं करहि तैसा को होइ ॥

Jaisaa toonn karahi taisaa ko hoi ||

As You make us, so we become.

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

तुझ बिनु दूजा नाही कोइ ॥

Tujh binu doojaa naahee koi ||

Without You, there is no other at all.

ਜੇਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਹੀ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

जेही तूं मति देहि तेही को पावै ॥

Jehee toonn mati dehi tehee ko paavai ||

As is the understanding which You bestow, so do we receive.

ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥੩॥

तुधु आपे भावै तिवै चलावै ॥३॥

Tudhu aape bhaavai tivai chalaavai ||3||

As it pleases Your Will, so do You lead us. ||3||


ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਪਰੀਆ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥

राग रतन परीआ परवार ॥

Raag ratan pareeaa paravaar ||

The divine crystalline harmonies, their consorts, and their celestial families

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰ ॥

तिसु विचि उपजै अम्रितु सार ॥

Tisu vichi upajai ammmritu saar ||

From them, the essence of Ambrosial Nectar is produced.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤੇ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥

नानक करते का इहु धनु मालु ॥

Naanak karate kaa ihu dhanu maalu ||

O Nanak, this is the wealth and property of the Creator Lord.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੯॥

जे को बूझै एहु बीचारु ॥४॥९॥

Je ko boojhai ehu beechaaru ||4||9||

If only this essential reality were understood! ||4||9||

करि किरपा अपनै घरि आइआ ता मिलि सखीआ काजु रचाइआ ॥

Kari kirapaa apanai ghari aaiaa taa mili sakheeaa kaaju rachaaiaa ||

When by His Grace He came to my home, then my companions met together to celebrate my marriage.

ਖੇਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਅਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਹੁ ਵੀਆਹਣ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥

खेलु देखि मनि अनदु भइआ सहु वीआहण आइआ ॥१॥

Khelu dekhi mani anadu bhaiaa sahu veeaaha(nn) aaiaa ||1||

Beholding this play, my mind became blissful; my Husband Lord has come to marry me. ||1||


ਗਾਵਹੁ ਗਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

गावहु गावहु कामणी बिबेक बीचारु ॥

Gaavahu gaavahu kaama(nn)ee bibek beechaaru ||

So sing - yes, sing the songs of wisdom and reflection, O brides.

ਹਮਰੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हमरै घरि आइआ जगजीवनु भतारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hamarai ghari aaiaa jagajeevanu bhataaru ||1|| rahaau ||

My spouse, the Life of the world, has come into my home. ||1|| Pause ||


ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹਮਰਾ ਵੀਆਹੁ ਜਿ ਹੋਆ ਜਾਂ ਸਹੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥

गुरू दुआरै हमरा वीआहु जि होआ जां सहु मिलिआ तां जानिआ ॥

Guroo duaarai hamaraa veeaahu ji hoaa jaan sahu miliaa taan jaaniaa ||

When I was married within the Gurdwara, the Guru's Gate, I met my Husband Lord, and I came to know Him.

ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵਿਆ ਹੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥

तिहु लोका महि सबदु रविआ है आपु गइआ मनु मानिआ ॥२॥

Tihu lokaa mahi sabadu raviaa hai aapu gaiaa manu maaniaa ||2||

The Word of His Shabad is pervading the three worlds; when my ego was quieted, my mind became happy. ||2||


ਆਪਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਹੋਰਨਿ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

आपणा कारजु आपि सवारे होरनि कारजु न होई ॥

Aapa(nn)aa kaaraju aapi savaare horani kaaraju na hoee ||

He Himself arranges His own affairs; His affairs cannot be arranged by anyone else.

ਜਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥

जितु कारजि सतु संतोखु दइआ धरमु है गुरमुखि बूझै कोई ॥३॥

Jitu kaaraji satu santtokhu daiaa dharamu hai guramukhi boojhai koee ||3||

By the affair of this marriage, truth, contentment, mercy and faith are produced; but how rare is that Gurmukh who understands it! ||3||


ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥

भनति नानकु सभना का पिरु एको सोइ ॥

Bhanati naanaku sabhanaa kaa piru eko soi ||

Says Nanak, that Lord alone is the Husband of all.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਾ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥

जिस नो नदरि करे सा सोहागणि होइ ॥४॥१०॥

Jis no nadari kare saa sohaaga(nn)i hoi ||4||10||

She, upon whom He casts His Glance of Grace, becomes the happy soul-bride. ||4||10||

ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਬਨੁ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

Grihu banu samasari sahaji subhaai ||

Home and forest are the same, for one who dwells in the balance of intuitive peace and poise.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਗਤੁ ਭਈ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਠਾਇ ॥

दुरमति गतु भई कीरति ठाइ ॥

Duramati gatu bhaee keerati thaai ||

His evil-mindedness departs, and the Praises of God take its place.

ਸਚ ਪਉੜੀ ਸਾਚਉ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਂਉ ॥

सच पउड़ी साचउ मुखि नांउ ॥

Sach pau(rr)ee saachau mukhi naanu ||

To chant the True Name with one's mouth is the true ladder.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਾਏ ਨਿਜ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥

सतिगुरु सेवि पाए निज थाउ ॥१॥

Satiguru sevi paae nij thaau ||1||

ਮਨ ਚੂਰੇ ਖਟੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਜਾਣੁ ॥

मन चूरे खटु दरसन जाणु ॥

Man choore khatu darasan jaa(nn)u ||

To conquer the mind is the knowledge of the six Shaastras.

ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

सरब जोति पूरन भगवानु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sarab joti pooran bhagavaanu ||1|| rahaau ||

The Divine Light of the Lord God is perfectly pervading. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਆਸ ਭੇਖ ਬਹੁ ਕਰੈ ॥

अधिक तिआस भेख बहु करै ॥

Adhik tiaas bhekh bahu karai ||

Excessive thirst for Maya makes people wear all sorts of religious robes.

ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਨਿ ਪਰਹਰੈ ॥

दुखु बिखिआ सुखु तनि परहरै ॥

Dukhu bikhiaa sukhu tani paraharai ||

The pain of corruption destroys the body's peace.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਹਿਰੈ ॥

कामु क्रोधु अंतरि धनु हिरै ॥

Kaamu krodhu anttari dhanu hirai ||

Sexual desire and anger steal the wealth of the self within.

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਰੈ ॥੨॥

दुबिधा छोडि नामि निसतरै ॥२॥

Dubidhaa chhodi naami nisatarai ||2||

But by abandoning duality, one is emancipated through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||


ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਲਾਹਣੁ ਸਹਜ ਅਨੰਦ ॥

सिफति सलाहणु सहज अनंद ॥

Siphati salaaha(nn)u sahaj anandd ||

In the Lord's Praise and adoration is intuitive peace, poise and bliss.

ਸਖਾ ਸੈਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥

सखा सैनु प्रेमु गोबिंद ॥

Sakhaa sainu premu gobindd ||

The Love of the Lord God is one's family and friends.

ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿੰਦੁ ॥

आपे करे आपे बखसिंदु ॥

Aape kare aape bakhasinddu ||

He Himself is the Doer, and He Himself is the Forgiver.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਹਿ ਆਗੈ ਜਿੰਦੁ ॥੩॥

तनु मनु हरि पहि आगै जिंदु ॥३॥

Tanu manu hari pahi aagai jinddu ||3||

My body and mind belong to the Lord; my life is at His Command. ||3||


ਝੂਠ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹ ॥

झूठ विकार महा दुखु देह ॥

Jhooth vikaar mahaa dukhu deh ||

Falsehood and corruption cause terrible suffering.

ਭੇਖ ਵਰਨ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਖੇਹ ॥

भेख वरन दीसहि सभि खेह ॥

Bhekh varan deesahi sabhi kheh ||

All the religious robes and social classes look just like dust.

ਜੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

जो उपजै सो आवै जाइ ॥

Jo upajai so aavai jaai ||

Whoever is born, continues to come and go.

ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

नानक असथिरु नामु रजाइ ॥४॥११॥

Naanak asathiru naamu rajaai ||4||11||

O Nanak, only the Naam and the Lord's Command are eternal and everlasting. ||4||11||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

आसा महला १ ॥

Aasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਏਕੋ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਕਮਲ ਅਨੂਪ ॥

एको सरवरु कमल अनूप ॥

Eko saravaru kamal anoop ||

In the pool is the one incomparably beautiful lotus.

ਸਦਾ ਬਿਗਾਸੈ ਪਰਮਲ ਰੂਪ ॥

सदा बिगासै परमल रूप ॥

Sadaa bigaasai paramal roop ||

It blossoms continually; its form is pure and fragrant.

ਊਜਲ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੂਗਹਿ ਹੰਸ ॥

ऊजल मोती चूगहि हंस ॥

Ujal motee choogahi hanss ||

The swans pick up the bright jewels.

ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਜਗਦੀਸੈ ਅੰਸ ॥੧॥

सरब कला जगदीसै अंस ॥१॥

Sarab kalaa jagadeesai anss ||1||

They take on the essence of the All-powerful Lord of the Universe. ||1||


ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ॥

जो दीसै सो उपजै बिनसै ॥

Jo deesai so upajai binasai ||

Whoever is seen, is subject to birth and death.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बिनु जल सरवरि कमलु न दीसै ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Binu jal saravari kamalu na deesai ||1|| rahaau ||

In the pool without water, the lotus is not seen. ||1|| Pause ||


ਬਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਭੇਦੁ ॥

बिरला बूझै पावै भेदु ॥

Biralaa boojhai paavai bhedu ||

How rare are those who know and understand this secret.

ਸਾਖਾ ਤੀਨਿ ਕਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਬੇਦੁ ॥

साखा तीनि कहै नित बेदु ॥

Saakhaa teeni kahai nit bedu ||

The Vedas continually speak of the three branches.

ਨਾਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਕੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

नाद बिंद की सुरति समाइ ॥

Naad bindd kee surati samaai ||

One who merges into the knowledge of the Lord as absolute and related,

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥

सतिगुरु सेवि परम पदु पाइ ॥२॥

Satiguru sevi param padu paai ||2||

Serves the True Guru and obtains the supreme status. ||2||


ਮੁਕਤੋ ਰਾਤਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਵਾਂਤਉ ॥

मुकतो रातउ रंगि रवांतउ ॥

Mukato raatau ranggi ravaantau ||

One who is imbued with the Love of the Lord and dwells continually upon Him is liberated.

ਰਾਜਨ ਰਾਜਿ ਸਦਾ ਬਿਗਸਾਂਤਉ ॥

राजन राजि सदा बिगसांतउ ॥

Raajan raaji sadaa bigasaantau ||

He is the king of kings, and blossoms forth continually.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

जिसु तूं राखहि किरपा धारि ॥

Jisu toonn raakhahi kirapaa dhaari ||

That one whom You preserve, by bestowing Your Mercy, O Lord,

ਬੂਡਤ ਪਾਹਨ ਤਾਰਹਿ ਤਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

बूडत पाहन तारहि तारि ॥३॥

Boodat paahan taarahi taari ||3||

Even the sinking stone - You float that one across. ||3||


ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥

त्रिभवण महि जोति त्रिभवण महि जाणिआ ॥

Tribhava(nn) mahi joti tribhava(nn) mahi jaa(nn)iaa ||

Your Light is pervading the three worlds; I know that You are permeating the three worlds.

ਉਲਟ ਭਈ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਣਿਆ ॥

उलट भई घरु घर महि आणिआ ॥

Ulat bhaee gharu ghar mahi aa(nn)iaa ||

When my mind turned away from Maya, I came to dwell in my own home.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

अहिनिसि भगति करे लिव लाइ ॥

Ahinisi bhagati kare liv laai ||

He who immerses himself in the Lord's Love and performs devotional worship day and night,

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੨॥

नानकु तिन कै लागै पाइ ॥४॥१२॥

Naanaku tin kai laagai paai ||4||12||

Nanak falls at the feet of that person. ||4||12||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

आसा महला १ ॥

Aasaa mahalaa 1 ||

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਹੁਜਤਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

गुरमति साची हुजति दूरि ॥

Guramati saachee hujati doori ||

Receiving the True Teachings from the Guru, arguments depart.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਲਾਗੈ ਧੂਰਿ ॥

बहुतु सिआणप लागै धूरि ॥

Bahutu siaa(nn)ap laagai dhoori ||

But through excessive cleverness, one is only plastered with dirt.

ਲਾਗੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਸਚ ਨਾਇ ॥

लागी मैलु मिटै सच नाइ ॥

Laagee mailu mitai sach naai ||

The filth of attachment is removed by the True Name of the Lord.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

गुर परसादि रहै लिव लाइ ॥१॥

Gur parasaadi rahai liv laai ||1||

By Guru's Grace, one remains lovingly attached to the Lord. ||1||


ਹੈ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

है हजूरि हाजरु अरदासि ॥

Hai hajoori haajaru aradaasi ||

He is the Presence Ever-present; offer your prayers to Him.

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

दुखु सुखु साचु करते प्रभ पासि ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Dukhu sukhu saachu karate prbh paasi ||1|| rahaau ||

Pain and pleasure are in the Hands of God, the True Creator. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥

कूड़ु कमावै आवै जावै ॥

Koo(rr)u kamaavai aavai jaavai ||

One who practices falsehood comes and goes.

ਕਹਣਿ ਕਥਨਿ ਵਾਰਾ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥

कहणि कथनि वारा नही आवै ॥

Kaha(nn)i kathani vaaraa nahee aavai ||

By speaking and talking, His limits cannot be found.

ਕਿਆ ਦੇਖਾ ਸੂਝ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

किआ देखा सूझ बूझ न पावै ॥

Kiaa dekhaa soojh boojh na paavai ||

Whatever one sees, is not understood.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੨॥

बिनु नावै मनि त्रिपति न आवै ॥२॥

Binu naavai mani tripati na aavai ||2||

Without the Name, satisfaction does not enter into the mind. ||2||


ਜੋ ਜਨਮੇ ਸੇ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ॥

जो जनमे से रोगि विआपे ॥

Jo janame se rogi viaape ||

Whoever is born is afflicted by disease,

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੂਖਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥

हउमै माइआ दूखि संतापे ॥

Haumai maaiaa dookhi santtaape ||

Tortured by the pain of egotism and Maya.

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਬਾਚੇ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥

से जन बाचे जो प्रभि राखे ॥

Se jan baache jo prbhi raakhe ||

They alone are saved, who are protected by God.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੇ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु सेवि अम्रित रसु चाखे ॥३॥

Satiguru sevi ammmrit rasu chaakhe ||3||

Serving the True Guru, they drink in the Amrit, the Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||


ਚਲਤਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚਾਖੈ ॥

चलतउ मनु राखै अम्रितु चाखै ॥

Chalatau manu raakhai ammmritu chaakhai ||

The unstable mind is restrained by tasting this Nectar.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਭਾਖੈ ॥

सतिगुर सेवि अम्रित सबदु भाखै ॥

Satigur sevi ammmrit sabadu bhaakhai ||

Serving the True Guru, one comes to cherish the Ambrosial Nectar of the Shabad.

ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਏ ॥

साचै सबदि मुकति गति पाए ॥

Saachai sabadi mukati gati paae ||

Through the True Word of the Shabad, the state of liberation is obtained.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੪॥੧੩॥

नानक विचहु आपु गवाए ॥४॥१३॥

Naanak vichahu aapu gavaae ||4||13||

O Nanak, self-conceit is eradicated from within. ||4||13||


ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਜੋ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਥੀਆ ॥

जो तिनि कीआ सो सचु थीआ ॥

Jo tini keeaa so sachu theeaa ||

Whatever He has done, has proved to be true.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥

अम्रित नामु सतिगुरि दीआ ॥

Ammmrit naamu satiguri deeaa ||

The True Guru bestows the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ॥

हिरदै नामु नाही मनि भंगु ॥

Hiradai naamu naahee mani bhanggu ||

With the Naam in the heart, the mind is not separated from the Lord.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੰਗੁ ॥੧॥

अनदिनु नालि पिआरे संगु ॥१॥

Anadinu naali piaare sanggu ||1||

Night and day, one dwells with the Beloved. ||1||


ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥

हरि जीउ राखहु अपनी सरणाई ॥

Hari jeeu raakhahu apanee sara(nn)aaee ||

O Lord, please keep me in the Protection of Your Sanctuary.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

गुर परसादी हरि रसु पाइआ नामु पदारथु नउ निधि पाई ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Gur parasaadee hari rasu paaiaa naamu padaarathu nau nidhi paaee ||1|| rahaau ||

By Guru's Grace, I have obtained the sublime essence of the Lord; I have received the wealth of the Naam and the nine treasures. ||1|| Pause ||


ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

करम धरम सचु साचा नाउ ॥

Karam dharam sachu saachaa naau ||

Those whose karma and Dharma - whose actions and faith - are in the True Name of the True Lord

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

ता कै सद बलिहारै जाउ ॥

Taa kai sad balihaarai jaau ||

I am forever a sacrifice to them.

ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

जो हरि राते से जन परवाणु ॥

Jo hari raate se jan paravaa(nn)u ||

Those who are imbued with the Lord are accepted and respected.

ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਰਮ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥੨॥

तिन की संगति परम निधानु ॥२॥

Tin kee sanggati param nidhaanu ||2||

In their company, the supreme wealth is obtained. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਧਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

हरि वरु जिनि पाइआ धन नारी ॥

Hari varu jini paaiaa dhan naaree ||

Blessed is that bride, who has obtained the Lord as her Husband.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

हरि सिउ राती सबदु वीचारी ॥

Hari siu raatee sabadu veechaaree ||

She is imbued with the Lord, and she reflects upon the Word of His Shabad.

ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥

आपि तरै संगति कुल तारै ॥

Aapi tarai sanggati kul taarai ||

She saves herself, and saves her family and friends as well.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु सेवि ततु वीचारै ॥३॥

Satiguru sevi tatu veechaarai ||3||

She serves the True Guru, and contemplates the essence of reality. ||3||


ਹਮਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

हमरी जाति पति सचु नाउ ॥

Hamaree jaati pati sachu naau ||

The True Name is my social status and honor.
