ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਉ ਨ ਬੈਸਹੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰਞੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਓ ॥

अंतरि आउ न बैसहु कहीऐ जिउ सुंञै घरि काओ ॥

Anttari aau na baisahu kaheeai jiu sun(ny)ai ghari kaao ||

No one invites him to come in and sit down. He is like a crow in a deserted home.

ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਡਾ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਜਗੁ ਸਬਾਏ ॥

जमणु मरणु वडा वेछोड़ा बिनसै जगु सबाए ॥

Jamma(nn)u mara(nn)u vadaa vechho(rr)aa binasai jagu sabaae ||

Trapped by birth and death, he is separated from the Lord for such a long time; the whole world is wasting away.

ਲਬਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਤੁ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਕਾਲੁ ਖੜਾ ਰੂਆਏ ॥੧॥

लबि धंधै माइआ जगतु भुलाइआ कालु खड़ा रूआए ॥१॥

Labi dhanddhai maaiaa jagatu bhulaaiaa kaalu kha(rr)aa rooaae ||1||

Greed, worldly entanglements and Maya deceive the world. Death hovers over its head, and causes it to weep. ||1||


ਬਾਬਾ ਆਵਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਹ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹ ਆਸੀਸਾ ਹੇ ॥

बाबा आवहु भाईहो गलि मिलह मिलि मिलि देह आसीसा हे ॥

Baabaa aavahu bhaaeeho gali milah mili mili deh aaseesaa he ||

Come, O Baba, and Siblings of Destiny - let's join together; take me in your arms, and bless me with your prayers.

ਬਾਬਾ ਸਚੜਾ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕੀਆ ਦੇਹ ਅਸੀਸਾ ਹੇ ॥

बाबा सचड़ा मेलु न चुकई प्रीतम कीआ देह असीसा हे ॥

Baabaa sacha(rr)aa melu na chukaee preetam keeaa deh aseesaa he ||

O Baba, union with the True Lord cannot be broken; bless me with your prayers for union with my Beloved.

ਆਸੀਸਾ ਦੇਵਹੋ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇਵਹੋ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੋ ॥

आसीसा देवहो भगति करेवहो मिलिआ का किआ मेलो ॥

Aaseesaa devaho bhagati karevaho miliaa kaa kiaa melo ||

Bless me with your prayers, that I may perform devotional worship service to my Lord; for those already united with Him, what is there to unite?

ਇਕਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਥੇਹਹੁ ਥਾਵਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਖੇਲੋ ॥

इकि भूले नावहु थेहहु थावहु गुर सबदी सचु खेलो ॥

Iki bhoole naavahu thehahu thaavahu gur sabadee sachu khelo ||

Some have wandered away from the Name of the Lord, and lost the Path. The Word of the Guru's Shabad is the true game.

ਜਮ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਵੇਸੇ ॥

जम मारगि नही जाणा सबदि समाणा जुगि जुगि साचै वेसे ॥

Jam maaragi nahee jaa(nn)aa sabadi samaa(nn)aa jugi jugi saachai vese ||

Do not go on Death's path; remain merged in the Word of the Shabad, the true form throughout the ages.

ਸਾਜਨ ਸੈਣ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਖੋਲੇ ਫਾਸੇ ॥੨॥

साजन सैण मिलहु संजोगी गुर मिलि खोले फासे ॥२॥

Saajan sai(nn) milahu sanjjogee gur mili khole phaase ||2||

Through good fortune, we meet such friends and relatives, who meet with the Guru, and escape the noose of Death. ||2||


ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਂਗੜਾ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

बाबा नांगड़ा आइआ जग महि दुखु सुखु लेखु लिखाइआ ॥

Baabaa naanga(rr)aa aaiaa jag mahi dukhu sukhu lekhu likhaaiaa ||

O Baba, we come into the world naked, into pain and pleasure, according to the record of our account.

ਲਿਖਿਅੜਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਨਾ ਟਲੈ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥

लिखिअड़ा साहा ना टलै जेहड़ा पुरबि कमाइआ ॥

Likhia(rr)aa saahaa naa talai jeha(rr)aa purabi kamaaiaa ||

The call of our pre-ordained destiny cannot be altered; it follows from our past actions.

ਬਹਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

बहि साचै लिखिआ अम्रितु बिखिआ जितु लाइआ तितु लागा ॥

Bahi saachai likhiaa ammmritu bikhiaa jitu laaiaa titu laagaa ||

The True Lord sits and writes of ambrosial nectar, and bitter poison; as the Lord attaches us, so are we attached.

ਕਾਮਣਿਆਰੀ ਕਾਮਣ ਪਾਏ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗਾ ॥

कामणिआरी कामण पाए बहु रंगी गलि तागा ॥

Kaama(nn)iaaree kaama(nn) paae bahu ranggee gali taagaa ||

The Charmer, Maya, has worked her charms, and the multi-colored thread is around everyone's neck.

ਹੋਛੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਛਾ ਗੁੜੁ ਸਾ ਮਖੀ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

होछी मति भइआ मनु होछा गुड़ु सा मखी खाइआ ॥

Hochhee mati bhaiaa manu hochhaa gu(rr)u saa makhee khaaiaa ||

Through shallow intellect, the mind becomes shallow, and one eats the fly, along with the sweets.

ਨਾ ਮਰਜਾਦੁ ਆਇਆ ਕਲਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਨਾਂਗੋ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

ना मरजादु आइआ कलि भीतरि नांगो बंधि चलाइआ ॥३॥

Naa marajaadu aaiaa kali bheetari naango banddhi chalaaiaa ||3||

Contrary to custom, he comes into the Dark Age of Kali Yuga naked, and naked he is bound down and sent away again. ||3||


ਬਾਬਾ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਜੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਰੋਵਣਾ ਜਾਨੀਅੜਾ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥

बाबा रोवहु जे किसै रोवणा जानीअड़ा बंधि पठाइआ है ॥

Baabaa rovahu je kisai rova(nn)aa jaaneea(rr)aa banddhi pathaaiaa hai ||

O Baba, weep and mourn if you must; the beloved soul is bound and driven off.

ਲਿਖਿਅੜਾ ਲੇਖੁ ਨ ਮੇਟੀਐ ਦਰਿ ਹਾਕਾਰੜਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ॥

लिखिअड़ा लेखु न मेटीऐ दरि हाकारड़ा आइआ है ॥

Likhia(rr)aa lekhu na meteeai dari haakaara(rr)aa aaiaa hai ||

The pre-ordained record of destiny cannot be erased; the summons has come from the Lord's Court.

ਹਾਕਾਰਾ ਆਇਆ ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਇਆ ਰੁੰਨੇ ਰੋਵਣਹਾਰੇ ॥

हाकारा आइआ जा तिसु भाइआ रुंने रोवणहारे ॥

Haakaaraa aaiaa jaa tisu bhaaiaa runne rova(nn)ahaare ||

The messenger comes, when it pleases the Lord, and the mourners begin to mourn.

ਪੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਭਾਤੀਜੇ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਅਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

पुत भाई भातीजे रोवहि प्रीतम अति पिआरे ॥

Put bhaaee bhaateeje rovahi preetam ati piaare ||

Sons, brothers, nephews and very dear friends weep and wail.

ਭੈ ਰੋਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਕੋ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਮੁਇਆ ਨਾਲੇ ॥

भै रोवै गुण सारि समाले को मरै न मुइआ नाले ॥

Bhai rovai gu(nn) saari samaale ko marai na muiaa naale ||

Let him weep, who weeps in the Fear of God, cherishing the virtues of God. No one dies with the dead.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਜਾਣ ਸਿਜਾਣਾ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥੪॥੫॥

नानक जुगि जुगि जाण सिजाणा रोवहि सचु समाले ॥४॥५॥

Naanak jugi jugi jaa(nn) sijaa(nn)aa rovahi sachu samaale ||4||5||

O Nanak, throughout the ages, they are known as wise, who weep, remembering the True Lord. ||4||5||

महला १ ॥

Mahalaa 1 ||

First Mehl:

ਜਾਲਉ ਐਸੀ ਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਮੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵੀਸਰੈ ॥

जालउ ऐसी रीति जितु मै पिआरा वीसरै ॥

Jaalau aisee reeti jitu mai piaaraa veesarai ||

Burn away those rituals which lead you to forget the Beloved Lord.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਈ ਭਲੀ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸੇਤੀ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ॥੨॥

नानक साई भली परीति जितु साहिब सेती पति रहै ॥२॥

Naanak saaee bhalee pareeti jitu saahib setee pati rahai ||2||

O Nanak, sublime is that love, which preserves my honor with my Lord Master. ||2||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮੁੰਧਿ ਵਿਦੇਸਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਝੂਰੇ ਸੰਮ੍ਹਾਲੇ ॥

घर ही मुंधि विदेसि पिरु नित झूरे सम्हाले ॥

Ghar hee munddhi videsi piru nit jhoore sammhaale ||

The soul-bride is at home, while the Husband Lord is away; she cherishes His memory, and mourns His absence.

ਮਿਲਦਿਆ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਨੀਅਤਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥

मिलदिआ ढिल न होवई जे नीअति रासि करे ॥१॥

Miladiaa dhil na hovaee je neeati raasi kare ||1||

She shall meet Him without delay, if she rids herself of duality. ||1||


ਮਃ ੧ ॥

First Mehl:

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਾਲੀ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਬਾਝੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥

नानक गाली कूड़ीआ बाझु परीति करेइ ॥

Naanak gaalee koo(rr)eeaa baajhu pareeti karei ||

O Nanak, false is the speech of one who acts without loving the Lord.

ਤਿਚਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਲੇਵੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੨॥

तिचरु जाणै भला करि जिचरु लेवै देइ ॥२॥

Ticharu jaa(nn)ai bhalaa kari jicharu levai dei ||2||

He judges things to be good, only as long as the Lord gives and he receives. ||2||


ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सति नामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुरप्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari sati naamu karataa purakhu nirabhau niravairu akaal moorati ajoonee saibhann guraprsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying. Beyond Birth. Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace:

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧ ਚਉਪਦੇ ॥

सोरठि महला १ घरु १ चउपदे ॥

Sorathi mahalaa 1 gharu 1 chaupade ||

Sorat'h First Mehl First House, Chau-Padas:

ਸਭਨਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਇਆ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਸਭਨਾਹ ॥

सभना मरणा आइआ वेछोड़ा सभनाह ॥

Sabhanaa mara(nn)aa aaiaa vechho(rr)aa sabhanaah ||

Death comes to all, and all must suffer separation.

ਪੁਛਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਆਣਿਆ ਆਗੈ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਕਿਨਾਹ ॥

पुछहु जाइ सिआणिआ आगै मिलणु किनाह ॥

Puchhahu jaai siaa(nn)iaa aagai mila(nn)u kinaah ||

Go and ask the clever people, whether they shall meet in the world hereafter.

ਜਿਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਵਡੜੀ ਵੇਦਨ ਤਿਨਾਹ ॥੧॥

जिन मेरा साहिबु वीसरै वडड़ी वेदन तिनाह ॥१॥

Jin meraa saahibu veesarai vada(rr)ee vedan tinaah ||1||

Those who forget my Lord and Master shall suffer in terrible pain. ||1||


ਭੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਹੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

भी सालाहिहु साचा सोइ ॥

Bhee saalaahihu saachaa soi ||

So praise the True Lord,

ਜਾ ਕੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जा की नदरि सदा सुखु होइ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Jaa kee nadari sadaa sukhu hoi || rahaau ||

By whose Grace peace ever prevails. || Pause ||


ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਸੀ ਸੋਇ ॥

वडा करि सालाहणा है भी होसी सोइ ॥

Vadaa kari saalaaha(nn)aa hai bhee hosee soi ||

Praise Him as great; He is, and He shall ever be.

ਸਭਨਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਮਾਣਸ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

सभना दाता एकु तू माणस दाति न होइ ॥

Sabhanaa daataa eku too maa(nn)as daati na hoi ||

You alone are the Great Giver; mankind cannot give anything.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਰੰਨ ਕਿ ਰੁੰਨੈ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

जो तिसु भावै सो थीऐ रंन कि रुंनै होइ ॥२॥

Jo tisu bhaavai so theeai rann ki runnai hoi ||2||

Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass; what good does it do to cry out in protest? ||2||


ਧਰਤੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਗੜ ਕੇਤੀ ਗਈ ਵਜਾਇ ॥

धरती उपरि कोट गड़ केती गई वजाइ ॥

Dharatee upari kot ga(rr) ketee gaee vajaai ||

Many have proclaimed their sovereignty over millions of fortresses on the earth, but they have now departed.

ਜੋ ਅਸਮਾਨਿ ਨ ਮਾਵਨੀ ਤਿਨ ਨਕਿ ਨਥਾ ਪਾਇ ॥

जो असमानि न मावनी तिन नकि नथा पाइ ॥

Jo asamaani na maavanee tin naki nathaa paai ||

And those, whom even the sky could not contain, had ropes put through their noses.

ਜੇ ਮਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੂਲੀਆ ਕਾਹੇ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥੩॥

जे मन जाणहि सूलीआ काहे मिठा खाहि ॥३॥

Je man jaa(nn)ahi sooleeaa kaahe mithaa khaahi ||3||

O mind, if you only knew the torment in your future, you would not relish the sweet pleasures of the present. ||3||


ਨਾਨਕ ਅਉਗੁਣ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਤੇਤੇ ਗਲੀ ਜੰਜੀਰ ॥

नानक अउगुण जेतड़े तेते गली जंजीर ॥

Naanak augu(nn) jeta(rr)e tete galee janjjeer ||

O Nanak, as many as are the sins one commits, so many are the chains around his neck.

ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਨਿ ਤ ਕਟੀਅਨਿ ਸੇ ਭਾਈ ਸੇ ਵੀਰ ॥

जे गुण होनि त कटीअनि से भाई से वीर ॥

Je gu(nn) honi ta kateeani se bhaaee se veer ||

If he possesses virtues, then the chains are cut away; these virtues are his brothers, his true brothers.

ਅਗੈ ਗਏ ਨ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਢਹੁ ਵੇਪੀਰ ॥੪॥੧॥

अगै गए न मंनीअनि मारि कढहु वेपीर ॥४॥१॥

Agai gae na manneeani maari kadhahu vepeer ||4||1||

Going to the world hereafter, those who have no Guru are not accepted; they are beaten, and expelled. ||4||1||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧ ॥

सोरठि महला १ घरु १ ॥

Sorathi mahalaa 1 gharu 1 ||

Sorat'h, First Mehl, First House:

ਮਨੁ ਹਾਲੀ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਰਮੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਤਨੁ ਖੇਤੁ ॥

मनु हाली किरसाणी करणी सरमु पाणी तनु खेतु ॥

Manu haalee kirasaa(nn)ee kara(nn)ee saramu paa(nn)ee tanu khetu ||

Make your mind the farmer, good deeds the farm, modesty the water, and your body the field.

ਨਾਮੁ ਬੀਜੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਾ ਰਖੁ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਵੇਸੁ ॥

नामु बीजु संतोखु सुहागा रखु गरीबी वेसु ॥

Naamu beeju santtokhu suhaagaa rakhu gareebee vesu ||

Let the Lord's Name be the seed, contentment the plow, and your humble dress the fence.

ਭਾਉ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਜੰਮਸੀ ਸੇ ਘਰ ਭਾਗਠ ਦੇਖੁ ॥੧॥

भाउ करम करि जमसी से घर भागठ देखु ॥१॥

Bhaau karam kari jammasee se ghar bhaagath dekhu ||1||

Doing deeds of love, the seed shall sprout, and you shall see your home flourish. ||1||


ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

बाबा माइआ साथि न होइ ॥

Baabaa maaiaa saathi na hoi ||

O Baba, the wealth of Maya does not go with anyone.

ਇਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

इनि माइआ जगु मोहिआ विरला बूझै कोइ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Ini maaiaa jagu mohiaa viralaa boojhai koi || rahaau ||

This Maya has bewitched the world, but only a rare few understand this. || Pause ||


ਹਾਣੁ ਹਟੁ ਕਰਿ ਆਰਜਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਵਥੁ ॥

हाणु हटु करि आरजा सचु नामु करि वथु ॥

Haa(nn)u hatu kari aarajaa sachu naamu kari vathu ||

Make your ever-decreasing life your shop, and make the Lord's Name your merchandise.

ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੋਚ ਕਰਿ ਭਾਂਡਸਾਲ ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਰਖੁ ॥

सुरति सोच करि भांडसाल तिसु विचि तिस नो रखु ॥

Surati soch kari bhaandasaal tisu vichi tis no rakhu ||

Make understanding and contemplation your warehouse, and in that warehouse, store the Lord's Name.

ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਮਨ ਹਸੁ ॥੨॥

वणजारिआ सिउ वणजु करि लै लाहा मन हसु ॥२॥

Va(nn)ajaariaa siu va(nn)aju kari lai laahaa man hasu ||2||

Deal with the Lord's dealers, earn your profits, and rejoice in your mind. ||2||


ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਸਉਦਾਗਰੀ ਸਤੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਲੈ ਚਲੁ ॥

सुणि सासत सउदागरी सतु घोड़े लै चलु ॥

Su(nn)i saasat saudaagaree satu gho(rr)e lai chalu ||

Let your trade be listening to scripture, and let Truth be the horses you take to sell.

ਖਰਚੁ ਬੰਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਮਤੁ ਮਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਕਲੁ ॥

खरचु बंनु चंगिआईआ मतु मन जाणहि कलु ॥

Kharachu bannu changgiaaeeaa matu man jaa(nn)ahi kalu ||

Gather up merits for your travelling expenses, and do not think of tomorrow in your mind.

ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਕੈ ਦੇਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਾ ਸੁਖਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਮਹਲੁ ॥੩॥

निरंकार कै देसि जाहि ता सुखि लहहि महलु ॥३॥

Nirankkaar kai desi jaahi taa sukhi lahahi mahalu ||3||

When you arrive in the land of the Formless Lord, you shall find peace in the Mansion of His Presence. ||3||


ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ ॥

लाइ चितु करि चाकरी मंनि नामु करि कमु ॥

Laai chitu kari chaakaree manni naamu kari kammu ||

Let your service be the focusing of your consciousness, and let your occupation be the placing of faith in the Naam.

ਬੰਨੁ ਬਦੀਆ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਵਣੀ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਧੰਨੁ ॥

बंनु बदीआ करि धावणी ता को आखै धंनु ॥

Bannu badeeaa kari dhaava(nn)ee taa ko aakhai dhannu ||

Let your work be restraint from sin; only then will people call you blessed.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਚੜੈ ਚਵਗਣ ਵੰਨੁ ॥੪॥੨॥

नानक वेखै नदरि करि चड़ै चवगण वंनु ॥४॥२॥

Naanak vekhai nadari kari cha(rr)ai chavaga(nn) vannu ||4||2||

O Nanak, the Lord shall look upon you with His Glance of Grace, and you shall be blessed with honor four times over. ||4||2||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਃ ੧ ਚਉਤੁਕੇ ॥

ਮਾਇ ਬਾਪ ਕੋ ਬੇਟਾ ਨੀਕਾ ਸਸੁਰੈ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਜਵਾਈ ॥

माइ बाप को बेटा नीका ससुरै चतुरु जवाई ॥

Maai baap ko betaa neekaa sasurai chaturu javaaee ||

The son is dear to his mother and father; he is the wise son-in-law to his father-in-law.

ਬਾਲ ਕੰਨਿਆ ਕੌ ਬਾਪੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਭਾਈ ਕੌ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥

बाल कंनिआ कौ बापु पिआरा भाई कौ अति भाई ॥

Baal kanniaa kau baapu piaaraa bhaaee kau ati bhaaee ||

The father is dear to his son and daughter, and the brother is very dear to his brother.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਈ ਪਰਾਈ ॥

हुकमु भइआ बाहरु घरु छोडिआ खिन महि भई पराई ॥

Hukamu bhaiaa baaharu gharu chhodiaa khin mahi bhaee paraaee ||

By the Order of the Lord's Command, he leaves his house and goes outside, and in an instant, everything becomes alien to him.

ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਨ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਧੂੜਿ ਧੁਮਾਈ ॥੧॥

नामु दानु इसनानु न मनमुखि तितु तनि धूड़ि धुमाई ॥१॥

Naamu daanu isanaanu na manamukhi titu tani dhoo(rr)i dhumaaee ||1||

The self-willed manmukh does not remember the Name of the Lord, does not give in charity, and does not cleanse his consciousness; his body rolls in the dust. ||1||


ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥

मनु मानिआ नामु सखाई ॥

Manu maaniaa naamu sakhaaee ||

The mind is comforted by the Comforter of the Naam.

ਪਾਇ ਪਰਉ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

पाइ परउ गुर कै बलिहारै जिनि साची बूझ बुझाई ॥ रहाउ ॥

Paai parau gur kai balihaarai jini saachee boojh bujhaaee || rahaau ||

I fall at the Guru's feet - I am a sacrifice to Him; He has given me to understand the true understanding. || Pause ||


ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਝੂਠ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਵਾਦੁ ਰਚਾਈ ॥

जग सिउ झूठ प्रीति मनु बेधिआ जन सिउ वादु रचाई ॥

Jag siu jhooth preeti manu bedhiaa jan siu vaadu rachaaee ||

The mind is impressed with the false love of the world; he quarrels with the Lord's humble servant.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨੁ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ਮਰੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥

माइआ मगनु अहिनिसि मगु जोहै नामु न लेवै मरै बिखु खाई ॥

Maaiaa maganu ahinisi magu johai naamu na levai marai bikhu khaaee ||

Infatuated with Maya, night and day, he sees only the worldly path; he does not chant the Naam, and drinking poison, he dies.

ਗੰਧਣ ਵੈਣਿ ਰਤਾ ਹਿਤਕਾਰੀ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥

गंधण वैणि रता हितकारी सबदै सुरति न आई ॥

Ganddha(nn) vai(nn)i rataa hitakaaree sabadai surati na aaee ||

He is imbued and infatuated with vicious talk; the Word of the Shabad does not come into his consciousness.

ਰੰਗਿ ਨ ਰਾਤਾ ਰਸਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੨॥

रंगि न राता रसि नही बेधिआ मनमुखि पति गवाई ॥२॥

Ranggi na raataa rasi nahee bedhiaa manamukhi pati gavaaee ||2||

He is not imbued with the Lord's Love, and he is not impressed by the taste of the Name; the self-willed manmukh loses his honor. ||2||


ਸਾਧ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਾਈ ॥

साध सभा महि सहजु न चाखिआ जिहबा रसु नही राई ॥

Saadh sabhaa mahi sahaju na chaakhiaa jihabaa rasu nahee raaee ||

He does not enjoy celestial peace in the Company of the Holy, and there is not even a bit of sweetness on his tongue.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਦਰ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

मनु तनु धनु अपुना करि जानिआ दर की खबरि न पाई ॥

Manu tanu dhanu apunaa kari jaaniaa dar kee khabari na paaee ||

He calls his mind, body and wealth his own; he has no knowledge of the Court of the Lord.

ਅਖੀ ਮੀਟਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਦਿਸੈ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥

अखी मीटि चलिआ अंधिआरा घरु दरु दिसै न भाई ॥

Akhee meeti chaliaa anddhiaaraa gharu daru disai na bhaaee ||

Closing his eyes, he walks in darkness; he cannot see the home of his own being, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੩॥

जम दरि बाधा ठउर न पावै अपुना कीआ कमाई ॥३॥

Jam dari baadhaa thaur na paavai apunaa keeaa kamaaee ||3||

Tied up at Death's door, he finds no place of rest; he receives the rewards of his own actions. ||3||


ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਅਖੀ ਵੇਖਾ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

नदरि करे ता अखी वेखा कहणा कथनु न जाई ॥

Nadari kare taa akhee vekhaa kaha(nn)aa kathanu na jaaee ||

When the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, then I see Him with my own eyes; He is indescribable, and cannot be described.

ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਈ ॥

कंनी सुणि सुणि सबदि सलाही अम्रितु रिदै वसाई ॥

Kannee su(nn)i su(nn)i sabadi salaahee ammmritu ridai vasaaee ||

With my ears, I continually listen to the Word of the Shabad, and I praise Him; His Ambrosial Name abides within my heart.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

निरभउ निरंकारु निरवैरु पूरन जोति समाई ॥

Nirabhau nirankkaaru niravairu pooran joti samaaee ||

He is Fearless, Formless and absolutely without vengeance; I am absorbed in His Perfect Light.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੪॥੩॥

नानक गुर विणु भरमु न भागै सचि नामि वडिआई ॥४॥३॥

Naanak gur vi(nn)u bharamu na bhaagai sachi naami vadiaaee ||4||3||

O Nanak, without the Guru, doubt is not dispelled; through the True Name, glorious greatness is obtained. ||4||3||

ਪੁੜੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਪੁੜੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਆਸਣੁ ਚਾਰਿ ਕੁੰਟ ਚਉਬਾਰਾ ॥

पुड़ु धरती पुड़ु पाणी आसणु चारि कुंट चउबारा ॥

Pu(rr)u dharatee pu(rr)u paa(nn)ee aasa(nn)u chaari kuntt chaubaaraa ||

In the realm of land, and in the realm of water, Your seat is the chamber of the four directions.

ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਏਕਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਟਕਸਾਲਾ ॥੧॥

सगल भवण की मूरति एका मुखि तेरै टकसाला ॥१॥

Sagal bhava(nn) kee moorati ekaa mukhi terai takasaalaa ||1||

Yours is the one and only form of the entire universe; Your mouth is the mint to fashion all. ||1||


ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ॥

मेरे साहिबा तेरे चोज विडाणा ॥

Mere saahibaa tere choj vidaa(nn)aa ||

O my Lord Master, Your play is so wonderful!

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਭਰਿਪੁਰਿ ਲੀਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जलि थलि महीअलि भरिपुरि लीणा आपे सरब समाणा ॥ रहाउ ॥

Jali thali maheeali bharipuri lee(nn)aa aape sarab samaa(nn)aa || rahaau ||

You are pervading and permeating the water, the land and the sky; You Yourself are contained in all. || Pause ||


ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੂਪੁ ਕਿਨੇਹਾ ॥

जह जह देखा तह जोति तुमारी तेरा रूपु किनेहा ॥

Jah jah dekhaa tah joti tumaaree teraa roopu kinehaa ||

Wherever I look, there I see Your Light, but what is Your form?

ਇਕਤੁ ਰੂਪਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਪਰਛੰਨਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਜੇਹਾ ॥੨॥

इकतु रूपि फिरहि परछंना कोइ न किस ही जेहा ॥२॥

Ikatu roopi phirahi parachhannaa koi na kis hee jehaa ||2||

You have one form, but it is unseen; there is none like any other. ||2||


ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਸੇਤਜ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜੰਤਾ ॥

अंडज जेरज उतभुज सेतज तेरे कीते जंता ॥

Anddaj jeraj utabhuj setaj tere keete janttaa ||

The beings born of eggs, born of the womb, born of the earth and born of sweat, all are created by You.

ਏਕੁ ਪੁਰਬੁ ਮੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਤੂ ਸਭਨਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਰਵੰਤਾ ॥੩॥

एकु पुरबु मै तेरा देखिआ तू सभना माहि रवंता ॥३॥

Eku purabu mai teraa dekhiaa too sabhanaa maahi ravanttaa ||3||

I have seen one glory of Yours, that You are pervading and permeating in all. ||3||


ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਮੈ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਮੈ ਮੂਰਖ ਕਿਛੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥

तेरे गुण बहुते मै एकु न जाणिआ मै मूरख किछु दीजै ॥

Tere gu(nn) bahute mai eku na jaa(nn)iaa mai moorakh kichhu deejai ||

Your Glories are so numerous, and I do not know even one of them; I am such a fool - please, give me some of them!

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਡੁਬਦਾ ਪਥਰੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੪॥

प्रणवति नानक सुणि मेरे साहिबा डुबदा पथरु लीजै ॥४॥४॥

Pr(nn)avati naanak su(nn)i mere saahibaa dubadaa patharu leejai ||4||4||

Prays Nanak, listen, O my Lord Master: I am sinking like a stone - please, save me! ||4||4||

ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਤਿਤੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਤੂ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥

हउ पापी पतितु परम पाखंडी तू निरमलु निरंकारी ॥

Hau paapee patitu param paakhanddee too niramalu nirankkaaree ||

I am a wicked sinner and a great hypocrite; You are the Immaculate and Formless Lord.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਚਾਖਿ ਪਰਮ ਰਸਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

अम्रितु चाखि परम रसि राते ठाकुर सरणि तुमारी ॥१॥

Ammmritu chaakhi param rasi raate thaakur sara(nn)i tumaaree ||1||

Tasting the Ambrosial Nectar, I am imbued with supreme bliss; O Lord and Master, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||


ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ॥

करता तू मै माणु निमाणे ॥

Karataa too mai maa(nn)u nimaa(nn)e ||

O Creator Lord, You are the honor of the dishonored.

ਮਾਣੁ ਮਹਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣੇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

माणु महतु नामु धनु पलै साचै सबदि समाणे ॥ रहाउ ॥

Maa(nn)u mahatu naamu dhanu palai saachai sabadi samaa(nn)e || rahaau ||

In my lap is the honor and glory of the wealth of the Name; I merge into the True Word of the Shabad. || Pause ||


ਤੂ ਪੂਰਾ ਹਮ ਊਰੇ ਹੋਛੇ ਤੂ ਗਉਰਾ ਹਮ ਹਉਰੇ ॥

तू पूरा हम ऊरे होछे तू गउरा हम हउरे ॥

Too pooraa ham ure hochhe too gauraa ham haure ||

You are perfect, while I am worthless and imperfect. You are profound, while I am trivial.

ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਰਾਤੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪਰਭਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਰੇ ॥੨॥

तुझ ही मन राते अहिनिसि परभाते हरि रसना जपि मन रे ॥२॥

Tujh hee man raate ahinisi parabhaate hari rasanaa japi man re ||2||

My mind is imbued with You, day and night and morning, O Lord; my tongue chants Your Name, and my mind meditates on You. ||2||


ਤੁਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਰਾਚੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਸਾਚੇ ॥

तुम साचे हम तुम ही राचे सबदि भेदि फुनि साचे ॥

Tum saache ham tum hee raache sabadi bhedi phuni saache ||

You are True, and I am absorbed into You; through the mystery of the Shabad, I shall ultimately become True as well.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਸੂਚੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੇ ਸੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥੩॥

अहिनिसि नामि रते से सूचे मरि जनमे से काचे ॥३॥

Ahinisi naami rate se sooche mari janame se kaache ||3||

Those who are imbued with the Naam day and night are pure, while those who die to be reborn are impure. ||3||


ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਸਰੀਕੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥

अवरु न दीसै किसु सालाही तिसहि सरीकु न कोई ॥

Avaru na deesai kisu saalaahee tisahi sareeku na koee ||

I do not see any other like the Lord; who else should I praise? No one is equal to Him.

ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੫॥

प्रणवति नानकु दासनि दासा गुरमति जानिआ सोई ॥४॥५॥

Pr(nn)avati naanaku daasani daasaa guramati jaaniaa soee ||4||5||

Prays Nanak, I am the slave of His slaves; by Guru's Instruction, I know Him. ||4||5||

ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਰਮਾ ॥

अलख अपार अगम अगोचर ना तिसु कालु न करमा ॥

Alakh apaar agamm agochar naa tisu kaalu na karamaa ||

He is unknowable, infinite, unapproachable and imperceptible. He is not subject to death or karma.

ਜਾਤਿ ਅਜਾਤਿ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਉ ਨ ਭਰਮਾ ॥੧॥

जाति अजाति अजोनी स्मभउ ना तिसु भाउ न भरमा ॥१॥

Jaati ajaati ajonee sambbhau naa tisu bhaau na bharamaa ||1||

His caste is casteless; He is unborn, self-illumined, and free of doubt and desire. ||1||


ਸਾਚੇ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥

साचे सचिआर विटहु कुरबाणु ॥

Saache sachiaar vitahu kurabaa(nn)u ||

I am a sacrifice to the Truest of the True.

ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪ ਵਰਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ना तिसु रूप वरनु नही रेखिआ साचै सबदि नीसाणु ॥ रहाउ ॥

Naa tisu roop varanu nahee rekhiaa saachai sabadi neesaa(nn)u || rahaau ||

He has no form, no color and no features; through the True Word of the Shabad, He reveals Himself. || Pause ||


ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

ना तिसु मात पिता सुत बंधप ना तिसु कामु न नारी ॥

Naa tisu maat pitaa sut banddhap naa tisu kaamu na naaree ||

He has no mother, father, sons or relatives; He is free of sexual desire; He has no wife.

ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅਪਰ ਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸਗਲੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

अकुल निरंजन अपर पर्मपरु सगली जोति तुमारी ॥२॥

Akul niranjjan apar parampparu sagalee joti tumaaree ||2||

He has no ancestry; He is immaculate. He is infinite and endless; O Lord, Your Light is pervading all. ||2||


ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥

घट घट अंतरि ब्रहमु लुकाइआ घटि घटि जोति सबाई ॥

Ghat ghat anttari brhamu lukaaiaa ghati ghati joti sabaaee ||

Deep within each and every heart, God is hidden; His Light is in each and every heart.

ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ॥੩॥

बजर कपाट मुकते गुरमती निरभै ताड़ी लाई ॥३॥

Bajar kapaat mukate guramatee nirabhai taa(rr)ee laaee ||3||

The heavy doors are opened by Guru's Instructions; one becomes fearless, in the trance of deep meditation. ||3||


ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਜੰਤਾ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥

जंत उपाइ कालु सिरि जंता वसगति जुगति सबाई ॥

Jantt upaai kaalu siri janttaa vasagati jugati sabaaee ||

The Lord created all beings, and placed death over the heads of all; all the world is under His Power.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈ ॥੪॥

सतिगुरु सेवि पदारथु पावहि छूटहि सबदु कमाई ॥४॥

Satiguru sevi padaarathu paavahi chhootahi sabadu kamaaee ||4||

Serving the True Guru, the treasure is obtained; living the Word of the Shabad, one is emancipated. ||4||


ਸੂਚੈ ਭਾਡੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਸੂਚਾਚਾਰੀ ॥

सूचै भाडै साचु समावै विरले सूचाचारी ॥

Soochai bhaadai saachu samaavai virale soochaachaaree ||

In the pure vessel, the True Name is contained; how few are those who practice true conduct.

ਤੰਤੈ ਕਉ ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥੬॥

तंतै कउ परम तंतु मिलाइआ नानक सरणि तुमारी ॥५॥६॥

Tanttai kau param tanttu milaaiaa naanak sara(nn)i tumaaree ||5||6||

The individual soul is united with the Supreme Soul; Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary, Lord. ||5||6||

Sorat'h, First Mehl:

ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀਐ ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਪਿਆਸ ॥

जिउ मीना बिनु पाणीऐ तिउ साकतु मरै पिआस ॥

Jiu meenaa binu paa(nn)eeai tiu saakatu marai piaas ||

Like a fish without water is the faithless cynic, who dies of thirst.

ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਰੀਐ ਰੇ ਮਨਾ ਜੋ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਾਸੁ ॥੧॥

तिउ हरि बिनु मरीऐ रे मना जो बिरथा जावै सासु ॥१॥

Tiu hari binu mareeai re manaa jo birathaa jaavai saasu ||1||

So shall you die, O mind, without the Lord, as your breath goes in vain. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਜਸੁ ਲੇਇ ॥

मन रे राम नाम जसु लेइ ॥

Man re raam naam jasu lei ||

O mind, chant the Lord's Name, and praise Him.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਹਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਇ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बिनु गुर इहु रसु किउ लहउ गुरु मेलै हरि देइ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Binu gur ihu rasu kiu lahau guru melai hari dei || rahaau ||

Without the Guru, how will you obtain this juice? The Guru shall unite you with the Lord. || Pause ||


ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲੁ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

संत जना मिलु संगती गुरमुखि तीरथु होइ ॥

Santt janaa milu sanggatee guramukhi teerathu hoi ||

For the Gurmukh, meeting with the Society of the Saints is like making a pilgrimage to a sacred shrine.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਮਜਨਾ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

अठसठि तीरथ मजना गुर दरसु परापति होइ ॥२॥

Athasathi teerath majanaa gur darasu paraapati hoi ||2||

The benefit of bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage is obtained by the Blessed Vision of the Guru's Darshan. ||2||


ਜਿਉ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਤਪੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ॥

जिउ जोगी जत बाहरा तपु नाही सतु संतोखु ॥

Jiu jogee jat baaharaa tapu naahee satu santtokhu ||

Like the Yogi without abstinence, and like penance without truth and contentment,

ਤਿਉ ਨਾਮੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਦੋਖੁ ॥੩॥

तिउ नामै बिनु देहुरी जमु मारै अंतरि दोखु ॥३॥

Tiu naamai binu dehuree jamu maarai anttari dokhu ||3||

So is the body without the Lord's Name; death will slay it, because of the sin within. ||3||


ਸਾਕਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

साकत प्रेमु न पाईऐ हरि पाईऐ सतिगुर भाइ ॥

Saakat premu na paaeeai hari paaeeai satigur bhaai ||

The faithless cynic does not obtain the Lord's Love; the Lord's Love is obtained only through the True Guru.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੭॥

सुख दुख दाता गुरु मिलै कहु नानक सिफति समाइ ॥४॥७॥

Sukh dukh daataa guru milai kahu naanak siphati samaai ||4||7||

One who meets with the Guru, the Giver of pleasure and pain, says Nanak, is absorbed in the Lord's Praise. ||4||7||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Sorat'h, First Mehl:

ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਾਨਿ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਹਮ ਥਾਰੇ ਭੇਖਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

तू प्रभ दाता दानि मति पूरा हम थारे भेखारी जीउ ॥

Too prbh daataa daani mati pooraa ham thaare bhekhaaree jeeu ||

You, God, are the Giver of gifts, the Lord of perfect understanding; I am a mere beggar at Your Door.

ਮੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

मै किआ मागउ किछु थिरु न रहाई हरि दीजै नामु पिआरी जीउ ॥१॥

Mai kiaa maagau kichhu thiru na rahaaee hari deejai naamu piaaree jeeu ||1||

What should I beg for? Nothing remains permanent; O Lord, please, bless me with Your Beloved Name. ||1||


ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥

घटि घटि रवि रहिआ बनवारी ॥

Ghati ghati ravi rahiaa banavaaree ||

In each and every heart, the Lord, the Lord of the forest, is permeating and pervading.

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਗੁਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਹਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जलि थलि महीअलि गुपतो वरतै गुर सबदी देखि निहारी जीउ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Jali thali maheeali gupato varatai gur sabadee dekhi nihaaree jeeu || rahaau ||

In the water, on the land, and in the sky, He is pervading but hidden; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is revealed. || Pause ||


ਮਰਤ ਪਇਆਲ ਅਕਾਸੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਓ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

मरत पइआल अकासु दिखाइओ गुरि सतिगुरि किरपा धारी जीउ ॥

Marat paiaal akaasu dikhaaio guri satiguri kirapaa dhaaree jeeu ||

In this world, in the nether regions of the underworld, and in the Akaashic Ethers, the Guru, the True Guru, has shown me the Lord; He has showered me with His Mercy.

ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਹੋਨੀ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

सो ब्रहमु अजोनी है भी होनी घट भीतरि देखु मुरारी जीउ ॥२॥

So brhamu ajonee hai bhee honee ghat bheetari dekhu muraaree jeeu ||2||

He is the unborn Lord God; He is, and shall ever be. Deep within your heart, behold Him, the Destroyer of ego. ||2||


ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਉ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਪੁੜੋ ਇਨਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

जनम मरन कउ इहु जगु बपुड़ो इनि दूजै भगति विसारी जीउ ॥

Janam maran kau ihu jagu bapu(rr)o ini doojai bhagati visaaree jeeu ||

This wretched world is caught in birth and death; in the love of duality, it has forgotten devotional worship of the Lord.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਾਕਤ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु मिलै त गुरमति पाईऐ साकत बाजी हारी जीउ ॥३॥

Satiguru milai ta guramati paaeeai saakat baajee haaree jeeu ||3||

Meeting the True Guru, the Guru's Teachings are obtained; the faithless cynic loses the game of life. ||3||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਿਰਾਰੇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

सतिगुर बंधन तोड़ि निरारे बहुड़ि न गरभ मझारी जीउ ॥

Satigur banddhan to(rr)i niraare bahu(rr)i na garabh majhaaree jeeu ||

Breaking my bonds, the True Guru has set me free, and I shall not be cast into the womb of reincarnation again.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੮॥

नानक गिआन रतनु परगासिआ हरि मनि वसिआ निरंकारी जीउ ॥४॥८॥

Naanak giaan ratanu paragaasiaa hari mani vasiaa nirankkaaree jeeu ||4||8||

O Nanak, the jewel of spiritual wisdom shines forth, and the Lord, the Formless Lord, dwells within my mind. ||4||8||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਜਿਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤੁਮ ਜਗਿ ਆਏ ਸੋ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

जिसु जल निधि कारणि तुम जगि आए सो अम्रितु गुर पाही जीउ ॥

Jisu jal nidhi kaara(nn)i tum jagi aae so ammmritu gur paahee jeeu ||

The treasure of the Name, for which you have come into the world - that Ambrosial Nectar is with the Guru.

ਛੋਡਹੁ ਵੇਸੁ ਭੇਖ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਇਹੁ ਫਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

छोडहु वेसु भेख चतुराई दुबिधा इहु फलु नाही जीउ ॥१॥

Chhodahu vesu bhekh chaturaaee dubidhaa ihu phalu naahee jeeu ||1||

Renounce costumes, disguises and clever tricks; this fruit is not obtained by duplicity. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੁ ਮਤੁ ਕਤ ਜਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

मन रे थिरु रहु मतु कत जाही जीउ ॥

Man re thiru rahu matu kat jaahee jeeu ||

O my mind, remain steady, and do not wander away.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂਢਤ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਘਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਘਟ ਮਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

बाहरि ढूढत बहुतु दुखु पावहि घरि अम्रितु घट माही जीउ ॥ रहाउ ॥

Baahari dhoodhat bahutu dukhu paavahi ghari ammmritu ghat maahee jeeu || rahaau ||

By searching around on the outside, you shall only suffer great pain; the Ambrosial Nectar is found within the home of your own being. || Pause ||


ਅਵਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਣਾ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

अवगुण छोडि गुणा कउ धावहु करि अवगुण पछुताही जीउ ॥

Avagu(nn) chhodi gu(nn)aa kau dhaavahu kari avagu(nn) pachhutaahee jeeu ||

Renounce corruption, and seek virtue; committing sins, you shall only come to regret and repent.

ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੀਚ ਬੁਡਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

सर अपसर की सार न जाणहि फिरि फिरि कीच बुडाही जीउ ॥२॥

Sar apasar kee saar na jaa(nn)ahi phiri phiri keech budaahee jeeu ||2||

You do not know the difference between good and evil; again and again, you sink into the mud. ||2||


ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਲੋਭ ਬਹੁ ਝੂਠੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਕਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

अंतरि मैलु लोभ बहु झूठे बाहरि नावहु काही जीउ ॥

Anttari mailu lobh bahu jhoothe baahari naavahu kaahee jeeu ||

Within you is the great filth of greed and falsehood; why do you bother to wash your body on the outside?

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਸਦ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਤਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

निरमल नामु जपहु सद गुरमुखि अंतर की गति ताही जीउ ॥३॥

Niramal naamu japahu sad guramukhi anttar kee gati taahee jeeu ||3||

Chant the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord always, under Guru's Instruction; only then will your innermost being be emancipated. ||3||


ਪਰਹਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

परहरि लोभु निंदा कूड़ु तिआगहु सचु गुर बचनी फलु पाही जीउ ॥

Parahari lobhu ninddaa koo(rr)u tiaagahu sachu gur bachanee phalu paahee jeeu ||

Let greed and slander be far away from you, and renounce falsehood; through the True Word of the Guru's Shabad, you shall obtain the true fruit.

ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੯॥

जिउ भावै तिउ राखहु हरि जीउ जन नानक सबदि सलाही जीउ ॥४॥९॥

Jiu bhaavai tiu raakhahu hari jeeu jan naanak sabadi salaahee jeeu ||4||9||

As it pleases You, You preserve me, Dear Lord; servant Nanak sings the Praises of Your Shabad. ||4||9||

ਅਪਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਮੂਸਤ ਰਾਖਿ ਨ ਸਾਕਹਿ ਕੀ ਪਰ ਘਰੁ ਜੋਹਨ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

अपना घरु मूसत राखि न साकहि की पर घरु जोहन लागा ॥

Apanaa gharu moosat raakhi na saakahi kee par gharu johan laagaa ||

You cannot save your own home from being plundered; why do you spy on the houses of others?

ਘਰੁ ਦਰੁ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਜੇ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥

घरु दरु राखहि जे रसु चाखहि जो गुरमुखि सेवकु लागा ॥१॥

Gharu daru raakhahi je rasu chaakhahi jo guramukhi sevaku laagaa ||1||

That Gurmukh who joins himself to the Guru's service, saves his own home, and tastes the Lord's Nectar. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਮਝੁ ਕਵਨ ਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

मन रे समझु कवन मति लागा ॥

Man re samajhu kavan mati laagaa ||

O mind, you must realize what your intellect is focused on.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਲੋਭਾਨੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਹਿ ਅਭਾਗਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

नामु विसारि अन रस लोभाने फिरि पछुताहि अभागा ॥ रहाउ ॥

Naamu visaari an ras lobhaane phiri pachhutaahi abhaagaa || rahaau ||

Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, one is involved with other tastes; the unfortunate wretch shall come to regret it in the end. || Pause ||


ਆਵਤ ਕਉ ਹਰਖ ਜਾਤ ਕਉ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਲੇ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

आवत कउ हरख जात कउ रोवहि इहु दुखु सुखु नाले लागा ॥

Aavat kau harakh jaat kau rovahi ihu dukhu sukhu naale laagaa ||

When things come, he is pleased, but when they go, he weeps and wails; this pain and pleasure remains attached to him.

ਆਪੇ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਿ ਭੋਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋ ਅਨਰਾਗਾ ॥੨॥

आपे दुख सुख भोगि भोगावै गुरमुखि सो अनरागा ॥२॥

Aape dukh sukh bhogi bhogaavai guramukhi so anaraagaa ||2||

The Lord Himself causes him to enjoy pleasure and endure pain; the Gurmukh, however, remains unaffected. ||2||


ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਊਪਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਪੀਆ ਸੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਗਾ ॥

हरि रस ऊपरि अवरु किआ कहीऐ जिनि पीआ सो त्रिपतागा ॥

Hari ras upari avaru kiaa kaheeai jini peeaa so tripataagaa ||

What else can be said to be above the subtle essence of the Lord? One who drinks it in is satisfied and satiated.

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੩॥

माइआ मोहित जिनि इहु रसु खोइआ जा साकत दुरमति लागा ॥३॥

Maaiaa mohit jini ihu rasu khoiaa jaa saakat duramati laagaa ||3||

One who is lured by Maya loses this juice; that faithless cynic is tied to his evil-mindedness. ||3||


ਮਨ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਵਨਪਤਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਦੇਉ ਸਮਾਗਾ ॥

मन का जीउ पवनपति देही देही महि देउ समागा ॥

Man kaa jeeu pavanapati dehee dehee mahi deu samaagaa ||

The Lord is the life of the mind, the Master of the breath of life; the Divine Lord is contained in the body.

ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਗਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੪॥

जे तू देहि त हरि रसु गाई मनु त्रिपतै हरि लिव लागा ॥४॥

Je too dehi ta hari rasu gaaee manu tripatai hari liv laagaa ||4||

If You so bless us, Lord, then we sing Your Praises; the mind is satisfied and fulfilled, lovingly attached to the Lord. ||4||


ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਜਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥

साधसंगति महि हरि रसु पाईऐ गुरि मिलिऐ जम भउ भागा ॥

Saadhasanggati mahi hari rasu paaeeai guri miliai jam bhau bhaagaa ||

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the subtle essence of the Lord is obtained; meeting the Guru, the fear of death departs.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੫॥੧੦॥

नानक राम नामु जपि गुरमुखि हरि पाए मसतकि भागा ॥५॥१०॥

Naanak raam naamu japi guramukhi hari paae masataki bhaagaa ||5||10||

O Nanak, chant the Name of the Lord, as Gurmukh; you shall obtain the Lord, and realize your pre-ordained destiny. ||5||10||

सरब जीआ सिरि लेखु धुराहू बिनु लेखै नही कोई जीउ ॥

Sarab jeeaa siri lekhu dhuraahoo binu lekhai nahee koee jeeu ||

Destiny, pre-ordained by the Lord, looms over the heads of all beings; no one is without this pre-ordained destiny.

ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

आपि अलेखु कुदरति करि देखै हुकमि चलाए सोई जीउ ॥१॥

Aapi alekhu kudarati kari dekhai hukami chalaae soee jeeu ||1||

Only He Himself is beyond destiny; creating the creation by His creative power, He beholds it, and causes His Command to be followed. ||1||


ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਹੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

मन रे राम जपहु सुखु होई ॥

Man re raam japahu sukhu hoee ||

O mind, chant the Name of the Lord, and be at peace.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਭੁਗਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अहिनिसि गुर के चरन सरेवहु हरि दाता भुगता सोई ॥ रहाउ ॥

Ahinisi gur ke charan sarevahu hari daataa bhugataa soee || rahaau ||

Day and night, serve at the Guru's feet; the Lord is the Giver, and the Enjoyer. || Pause ||


ਜੋ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥

जो अंतरि सो बाहरि देखहु अवरु न दूजा कोई जीउ ॥

Jo anttari so baahari dekhahu avaru na doojaa koee jeeu ||

He is within - see Him outside as well; there is no one, other than Him.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

गुरमुखि एक द्रिसटि करि देखहु घटि घटि जोति समोई जीउ ॥२॥

Guramukhi ek drisati kari dekhahu ghati ghati joti samoee jeeu ||2||

As Gurmukh, look upon all with the single eye of equality; in each and every heart, the Divine Light is contained. ||2||


ਚਲਤੌ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਖਹੁ ਘਰਿ ਅਪਨੈ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਇਹ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥

चलतौ ठाकि रखहु घरि अपनै गुर मिलिऐ इह मति होई जीउ ॥

Chalatau thaaki rakhahu ghari apanai gur miliai ih mati hoee jeeu ||

Restrain your fickle mind, and keep it steady within its own home; meeting the Guru, this understanding is obtained.

ਦੇਖਿ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੁ ਰਹਉ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

देखि अद्रिसटु रहउ बिसमादी दुखु बिसरै सुखु होई जीउ ॥३॥

Dekhi adrisatu rahau bisamaadee dukhu bisarai sukhu hoee jeeu ||3||

Seeing the unseen Lord, you shall be amazed and delighted; forgetting your pain, you shall be at peace. ||3||


ਪੀਵਹੁ ਅਪਿਉ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥

पीवहु अपिउ परम सुखु पाईऐ निज घरि वासा होई जीउ ॥

Peevahu apiu param sukhu paaeeai nij ghari vaasaa hoee jeeu ||

Drinking in the ambrosial nectar, you shall attain the highest bliss, and dwell within the home of your own self.

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਭਵ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ਪੁਨਰਪਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥

जनम मरण भव भंजनु गाईऐ पुनरपि जनमु न होई जीउ ॥४॥

Janam mara(nn) bhav bhanjjanu gaaeeai punarapi janamu na hoee jeeu ||4||

So sing the Praises of the Lord, the Destroyer of the fear of birth and death, and you shall not be reincarnated again. ||4||


ਤਤੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਸੋਹੰ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥

ततु निरंजनु जोति सबाई सोहं भेदु न कोई जीउ ॥

Tatu niranjjanu joti sabaaee sohann bhedu na koee jeeu ||

The essence, the immaculate Lord, the Light of all - I am He and He is me - there is no difference between us.

ਅਪਰੰਪਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੋਈ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥੧੧॥

अपर्मपर पारब्रहमु परमेसरु नानक गुरु मिलिआ सोई जीउ ॥५॥११॥

Aparamppar paarabrhamu paramesaru naanak guru miliaa soee jeeu ||5||11||

The Infinite Transcendent Lord, the Supreme Lord God - Nanak has met with Him, the Guru. ||5||11||

Sorat'h, First Mehl, Third House:

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सतिगुर प्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਗਾਵਾ ॥

जा तिसु भावा तद ही गावा ॥

Jaa tisu bhaavaa tad hee gaavaa ||

When I am pleasing to Him, then I sing His Praises.

ਤਾ ਗਾਵੇ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥

ता गावे का फलु पावा ॥

Taa gaave kaa phalu paavaa ||

Singing His Praises, I receive the fruits of my rewards.

ਗਾਵੇ ਕਾ ਫਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥

गावे का फलु होई ॥

Gaave kaa phalu hoee ||

The rewards of singing His Praises are obtained,

ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥

जा आपे देवै सोई ॥१॥

Jaa aape devai soee ||1||

when He Himself gives them. ||1||


ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥

मन मेरे गुर बचनी निधि पाई ॥

Man mere gur bachanee nidhi paaee ||

O my mind, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the treasure is obtained;

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

ता ते सच महि रहिआ समाई ॥ रहाउ ॥

Taa te sach mahi rahiaa samaaee || rahaau ||

This is why I remain immersed in the True Name. || Pause ||


ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਗੀ ॥

गुर साखी अंतरि जागी ॥

Gur saakhee anttari jaagee ||

When I awoke within myself to the Guru's Teachings,

ਤਾ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥

ता चंचल मति तिआगी ॥

Taa chancchal mati tiaagee ||

Then I renounced my fickle intellect.

ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਕਾ ਉਜੀਆਰਾ ॥

गुर साखी का उजीआरा ॥

Gur saakhee kaa ujeeaaraa ||

When the Light of the Guru's Teachings dawned,

ਤਾ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਅੰਧੵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

ता मिटिआ सगल अंध्यारा ॥२॥

Taa mitiaa sagal anddhyaaraa ||2||

And then all darkness was dispelled. ||2||


ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥

गुर चरनी मनु लागा ॥

Gur charanee manu laagaa ||

When the mind is attached to the Guru's Feet,

ਤਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥

ता जम का मारगु भागा ॥

Taa jam kaa maaragu bhaagaa ||

Then the Path of Death recedes.

ਭੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

भै विचि निरभउ पाइआ ॥

Bhai vichi nirabhau paaiaa ||

Through the Fear of God, one attains the Fearless Lord;

ਤਾ ਸਹਜੈ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥

ता सहजै कै घरि आइआ ॥३॥

Taa sahajai kai ghari aaiaa ||3||

Then, one enters the home of celestial bliss. ||3||


ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

भणति नानकु बूझै को बीचारी ॥

Bha(nn)ati naanaku boojhai ko beechaaree ||

Prays Nanak, how rare are those who reflect and understand,

ਇਸੁ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੀ ॥

इसु जग महि करणी सारी ॥

Isu jag mahi kara(nn)ee saaree ||

The most sublime action in this world.

ਕਰਣੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥

करणी कीरति होई ॥

Kara(nn)ee keerati hoee ||

The noblest deed is to sing the Lord's Praises,

ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੋਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੨॥

जा आपे मिलिआ सोई ॥४॥१॥१२॥

Jaa aape miliaa soee ||4||1||12||

And so meet the Lord Himself. ||4||1||12||

सोरठि महला १ घरु १ असटपदीआ चउतुकी

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਨ ਪੜਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਨ ਪੂਜਉ ਮੜੈ ਮਸਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

दुबिधा न पड़उ हरि बिनु होरु न पूजउ मड़ै मसाणि न जाई ॥

Dubidhaa na pa(rr)au hari binu horu na poojau ma(rr)ai masaa(nn)i na jaaee ||

I am not torn by duality, because I do not worship any other than the Lord; I do not visit tombs or crematoriums.

ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਾਚਿ ਨ ਪਰ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਵਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

त्रिसना राचि न पर घरि जावा त्रिसना नामि बुझाई ॥

Trisanaa raachi na par ghari jaavaa trisanaa naami bujhaaee ||

I do not enter the houses of strangers, engrossed in desire. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, has satisfied my desires.

ਘਰ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਤੇ ਮਨ ਭਾਈ ॥

घर भीतरि घरु गुरू दिखाइआ सहजि रते मन भाई ॥

Ghar bheetari gharu guroo dikhaaiaa sahaji rate man bhaaee ||

Deep within my heart, the Guru has shown me the home of my being, and my mind is imbued with peace and poise, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਬੀਨਾ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮਤਿ ਸਾਈ ॥੧॥

तू आपे दाना आपे बीना तू देवहि मति साई ॥१॥

Too aape daanaa aape beenaa too devahi mati saaee ||1||

You Yourself are all-knowing, and You Yourself are all-seeing; You alone bestow intelligence, O Lord. ||1||


ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ ਰਤਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥

मनु बैरागि रतउ बैरागी सबदि मनु बेधिआ मेरी माई ॥

Manu bairaagi ratau bairaagee sabadi manu bedhiaa meree maaee ||

My mind is detached, imbued with detachment; the Word of the Shabad has pierced my mind, O my mother.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंतरि जोति निरंतरि बाणी साचे साहिब सिउ लिव लाई ॥ रहाउ ॥

Anttari joti niranttari baa(nn)ee saache saahib siu liv laaee || rahaau ||

God's Light shines continually within the nucleus of my deepest self; I am lovingly attached to the Bani, the Word of the True Lord Master. || Pause ||


ਅਸੰਖ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਕਹਹਿ ਬੈਰਾਗ ਸੋ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਜਿ ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥

असंख बैरागी कहहि बैराग सो बैरागी जि खसमै भावै ॥

Asankkh bairaagee kahahi bairaag so bairaagee ji khasamai bhaavai ||

Countless detached renunciates talk of detachment and renunciation, but he alone is a true renunciate, who is pleasing to the Lord Master.

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਦਾ ਭੈ ਰਚਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥

हिरदै सबदि सदा भै रचिआ गुर की कार कमावै ॥

Hiradai sabadi sadaa bhai rachiaa gur kee kaar kamaavai ||

The Word of the Shabad is ever in his heart; he is absorbed in the Fear of God, and he works to serve the Guru.

ਏਕੋ ਚੇਤੈ ਮਨੂਆ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥

एको चेतै मनूआ न डोलै धावतु वरजि रहावै ॥

Eko chetai manooaa na dolai dhaavatu varaji rahaavai ||

He remembers the One Lord, his mind does not waver, and he restrains its wanderings.

ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੨॥

सहजे माता सदा रंगि राता साचे के गुण गावै ॥२॥

Sahaje maataa sadaa ranggi raataa saache ke gu(nn) gaavai ||2||

He is intoxicated with celestial bliss, and is ever imbued with the Lord's Love; he sings the Glorious Praises of the True Lord. ||2||


ਮਨੂਆ ਪਉਣੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੁਖ ਭਾਈ ॥

मनूआ पउणु बिंदु सुखवासी नामि वसै सुख भाई ॥

Manooaa pau(nn)u binddu sukhavaasee naami vasai sukh bhaaee ||

The mind is like the wind, but if it comes to rest in peace, even for an instant, then he shall abide in the peace of the Name, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਜਿਹਬਾ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੋਤ੍ਰ ਸਚਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਲਿ ਬੂਝੀ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥

जिहबा नेत्र सोत्र सचि राते जलि बूझी तुझहि बुझाई ॥

Jihabaa netr sotr sachi raate jali boojhee tujhahi bujhaaee ||

His tongue, eyes and ears are imbued with Truth; O Lord, You quench the fires of desire.

ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ॥

आस निरास रहै बैरागी निज घरि ताड़ी लाई ॥

Aas niraas rahai bairaagee nij ghari taa(rr)ee laaee ||

In hope, the renunciate remains free of hopes; in the home of his own inner self, he is absorbed in the trance of deep meditation.

ਭਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਜੇ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਪੀਆਈ ॥੩॥

भिखिआ नामि रजे संतोखी अम्रितु सहजि पीआई ॥३॥

Bhikhiaa naami raje santtokhee ammmritu sahaji peeaaee ||3||

He remains content, satisfied with the charity of the Naam; he drinks in the Ambrosial Amrit with ease. ||3||


ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਰਾਈ ॥

दुबिधा विचि बैरागु न होवी जब लगु दूजी राई ॥

Dubidhaa vichi bairaagu na hovee jab lagu doojee raaee ||

There is no renunciation in duality, as long as there is even a particle of duality.

ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ॥

सभु जगु तेरा तू एको दाता अवरु न दूजा भाई ॥

Sabhu jagu teraa too eko daataa avaru na doojaa bhaaee ||

The whole world is Yours, Lord; You alone are the Giver. There is not any other, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜੰਤ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

मनमुखि जंत दुखि सदा निवासी गुरमुखि दे वडिआई ॥

Manamukhi jantt dukhi sadaa nivaasee guramukhi de vadiaaee ||

The self-willed manmukh dwells in misery forever, while the Lord bestows greatness upon the Gurmukh.

ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰ ਅਗੰਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਕਹਣੈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥

अपर अपार अगम अगोचर कहणै कीम न पाई ॥४॥

Apar apaar agamm agochar kaha(nn)ai keem na paaee ||4||

God is infinite, endless, inaccessible and unfathomable; His worth cannot be described. ||4||


ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਮਹਾ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਤੀਨਿ ਭਵਣ ਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੰ ॥

सुंन समाधि महा परमारथु तीनि भवण पति नामं ॥

Sunn samaadhi mahaa paramaarathu teeni bhava(nn) pati naamann ||

The consciousness in deep Samaadhi, the Supreme Being, the Lord of the three worlds - these are Your Names, Lord.

ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਸਹਾਮੰ ॥

मसतकि लेखु जीआ जगि जोनी सिरि सिरि लेखु सहामं ॥

Masataki lekhu jeeaa jagi jonee siri siri lekhu sahaamann ||

The creatures born into this world have their destiny inscribed upon their foreheads; they experience according to their destinies.

ਕਰਮ ਸੁਕਰਮ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਮੰ ॥

करम सुकरम कराए आपे आपे भगति द्रिड़ामं ॥

Karam sukaram karaae aape aape bhagati dri(rr)aamann ||

The Lord Himself causes them to do good and bad deeds; He Himself makes them steadfast in devotional worship.

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਜੂਠਿ ਲਹੈ ਭੈ ਮਾਨੰ ਆਪੇ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਅਗਾਮੰ ॥੫॥

मनि मुखि जूठि लहै भै मानं आपे गिआनु अगामं ॥५॥

Mani mukhi joothi lahai bhai maanann aape giaanu agaamann ||5||

The filth of their mind and mouth is washed off when they live in the Fear of God; the inaccessible Lord Himself blesses them with spiritual wisdom. ||5||


ਜਿਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਸਾਦੁ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ॥

जिन चाखिआ सेई सादु जाणनि जिउ गुंगे मिठिआई ॥

Jin chaakhiaa seee saadu jaa(nn)ani jiu gungge mithiaaee ||

Only those who taste it know its sweet taste, like the mute, who eats the candy, and only smiles.

ਅਕਥੈ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਥੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਚਾਲਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਈ ॥

अकथै का किआ कथीऐ भाई चालउ सदा रजाई ॥

Akathai kaa kiaa katheeai bhaaee chaalau sadaa rajaaee ||

How can I describe the indescribable, O Siblings of Destiny? I shall follow His Will forever.

ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਮਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥

गुरु दाता मेले ता मति होवै निगुरे मति न काई ॥

Guru daataa mele taa mati hovai nigure mati na kaaee ||

If one meets with the Guru, the Generous Giver, then he understands; those who have no Guru cannot understand this.

ਜਿਉ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਾਲਹ ਭਾਈ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੬॥

जिउ चलाए तिउ चालह भाई होर किआ को करे चतुराई ॥६॥

Jiu chalaae tiu chaalah bhaaee hor kiaa ko kare chaturaaee ||6||

As the Lord causes us to act, so do we act, O Siblings of Destiny. What other clever tricks can anyone try? ||6||


ਇਕਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

इकि भरमि भुलाए इकि भगती राते तेरा खेलु अपारा ॥

Iki bharami bhulaae iki bhagatee raate teraa khelu apaaraa ||

Some are deluded by doubt, while others are imbued with devotional worship; Your play is infinite and endless.

ਜਿਤੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਲਾਏ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੂ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥

जितु तुधु लाए तेहा फलु पाइआ तू हुकमि चलावणहारा ॥

Jitu tudhu laae tehaa phalu paaiaa too hukami chalaava(nn)ahaaraa ||

As You engage them, they receive the fruits of their rewards; You alone are the One who issues Your Commands.

ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥

सेवा करी जे किछु होवै अपणा जीउ पिंडु तुमारा ॥

Sevaa karee je kichhu hovai apa(nn)aa jeeu pinddu tumaaraa ||

I would serve You, if anything were my own; my soul and body are Yours.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੭॥

सतिगुरि मिलिऐ किरपा कीनी अम्रित नामु अधारा ॥७॥

Satiguri miliai kirapaa keenee ammmrit naamu adhaaraa ||7||

One who meets with the True Guru, by His Grace, takes the Support of the Ambrosial Naam. ||7||


ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨੰ ॥

गगनंतरि वासिआ गुण परगासिआ गुण महि गिआन धिआनं ॥

Gagananttari vaasiaa gu(nn) paragaasiaa gu(nn) mahi giaan dhiaanann ||

He dwells in the heavenly realms, and his virtues radiantly shine forth; meditation and spiritual wisdom are found in virtue.

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਤਤੋ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਨੰ ॥

नामु मनि भावै कहै कहावै ततो ततु वखानं ॥

Naamu mani bhaavai kahai kahaavai tato tatu vakhaanann ||

The Naam is pleasing to his mind; he speaks it, and causes others to speak it as well. He speaks the essential essence of wisdom.

ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨੰ ॥

सबदु गुर पीरा गहिर ग्मभीरा बिनु सबदै जगु बउरानं ॥

Sabadu gur peeraa gahir gambbheeraa binu sabadai jagu bauraanann ||

The Word of the Shabad is his Guru and spiritual teacher, profound and unfathomable; without the Shabad, the world is insane.

ਪੂਰਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਗੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੰ ॥੮॥੧॥

पूरा बैरागी सहजि सुभागी सचु नानक मनु मानं ॥८॥१॥

Pooraa bairaagee sahaji subhaagee sachu naanak manu maanann ||8||1||

He is a perfect renunciate, naturally at ease, O Nanak, whose mind is pleased with the True Lord. ||8||1||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕੀ ॥

सोरठि महला १ तितुकी ॥

Sorathi mahalaa 1 titukee ||

Sorat'h, First Mehl, Ti-Tukas:

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਨੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬੰਧਕਾਰੀ ॥

आसा मनसा बंधनी भाई करम धरम बंधकारी ॥

Aasaa manasaa banddhanee bhaaee karam dharam banddhakaaree ||

Hope and desire are entrapments, O Siblings of Destiny. Religious rituals and ceremonies are traps.

ਪਾਪਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥

पापि पुंनि जगु जाइआ भाई बिनसै नामु विसारी ॥

Paapi punni jagu jaaiaa bhaaee binasai naamu visaaree ||

Because of good and bad deeds, one is born into the world, O Siblings of Destiny; forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he is ruined.

ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਸਭੇ ਵੇਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥

इह माइआ जगि मोहणी भाई करम सभे वेकारी ॥१॥

Ih maaiaa jagi moha(nn)ee bhaaee karam sabhe vekaaree ||1||

This Maya is the enticer of the world, O Siblings of Destiny; all such actions are corrupt. ||1||


ਸੁਣਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥

सुणि पंडित करमा कारी ॥

Su(nn)i panddit karamaa kaaree ||

Listen, O ritualistic Pandit:

ਜਿਤੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਸੁ ਆਤਮ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

जितु करमि सुखु ऊपजै भाई सु आतम ततु बीचारी ॥ रहाउ ॥

Jitu karami sukhu upajai bhaaee su aatam tatu beechaaree || rahaau ||

That religious ritual which produces happiness, O Siblings of Destiny, is contemplation of the essence of the soul. || Pause ||


ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਕੈ ਖੜੋ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥

सासतु बेदु बकै खड़ो भाई करम करहु संसारी ॥

Saasatu bedu bakai kha(rr)o bhaaee karam karahu sanssaaree ||

You may stand and recite the Shaastras and the Vedas, O Siblings of Destiny, but these are just worldly actions.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਭਾਈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥

पाखंडि मैलु न चूकई भाई अंतरि मैलु विकारी ॥

Paakhanddi mailu na chookaee bhaaee anttari mailu vikaaree ||

Filth cannot be washed away by hypocrisy, O Siblings of Destiny; the filth of corruption and sin is within you.

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਡੂਬੀ ਮਾਕੁਰੀ ਭਾਈ ਊਂਡੀ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੨॥

इन बिधि डूबी माकुरी भाई ऊंडी सिर कै भारी ॥२॥

In bidhi doobee maakuree bhaaee undee sir kai bhaaree ||2||

This is how the spider is destroyed, O Siblings of Destiny, by falling head-long in its own web. ||2||


ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ਭਾਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥

दुरमति घणी विगूती भाई दूजै भाइ खुआई ॥

Duramati gha(nn)ee vigootee bhaaee doojai bhaai khuaaee ||

So many are destroyed by their own evil-mindedness, O Siblings of Destiny; in the love of duality, they are ruined.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

बिनु सतिगुर नामु न पाईऐ भाई बिनु नामै भरमु न जाई ॥

Binu satigur naamu na paaeeai bhaaee binu naamai bharamu na jaaee ||

Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Name, doubt does not depart.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਈ ॥੩॥

सतिगुरु सेवे ता सुखु पाए भाई आवणु जाणु रहाई ॥३॥

Satiguru seve taa sukhu paae bhaaee aava(nn)u jaa(nn)u rahaaee ||3||

If one serves the True Guru, then he obtains peace, O Siblings of Destiny; his comings and goings are ended. ||3||


ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥

साचु सहजु गुर ते ऊपजै भाई मनु निरमलु साचि समाई ॥

Saachu sahaju gur te upajai bhaaee manu niramalu saachi samaaee ||

True celestial peace comes from the Guru, O Siblings of Destiny; the immaculate mind is absorbed into the True Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥

गुरु सेवे सो बूझै भाई गुर बिनु मगु न पाई ॥

Guru seve so boojhai bhaaee gur binu magu na paaee ||

One who serves the Guru, understands, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Guru, the way is not found.

ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥੪॥

जिसु अंतरि लोभु कि करम कमावै भाई कूड़ु बोलि बिखु खाई ॥४॥

Jisu anttari lobhu ki karam kamaavai bhaaee koo(rr)u boli bikhu khaaee ||4||

What can anyone do, with greed within? O Siblings of Destiny, by telling lies, they eat poison. ||4||


ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਤਥੁ ॥

पंडित दही विलोईऐ भाई विचहु निकलै तथु ॥

Panddit dahee viloeeai bhaaee vichahu nikalai tathu ||

O Pandit, by churning cream, butter is produced.

ਜਲੁ ਮਥੀਐ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਏਹਾ ਵਥੁ ॥

जलु मथीऐ जलु देखीऐ भाई इहु जगु एहा वथु ॥

Jalu matheeai jalu dekheeai bhaaee ihu jagu ehaa vathu ||

By churning water, you shall only see water, O Siblings of Destiny; this world is like that.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਉ ਅਲਖੁ ॥੫॥

गुर बिनु भरमि विगूचीऐ भाई घटि घटि देउ अलखु ॥५॥

Gur binu bharami vigoocheeai bhaaee ghati ghati deu alakhu ||5||

Without the Guru, he is ruined by doubt, O Siblings of Destiny; the unseen Divine Lord is in each and every heart. ||5||


ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਾਗੋ ਸੂਤ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਬਾਧੋ ਮਾਇ ॥

इहु जगु तागो सूत को भाई दह दिस बाधो माइ ॥

Ihu jagu taago soot ko bhaaee dah dis baadho maai ||

This world is like a thread of cotton, O Siblings of Destiny, which Maya has tied on all ten sides.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਾਠਿ ਨ ਛੂਟਈ ਭਾਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥

बिनु गुर गाठि न छूटई भाई थाके करम कमाइ ॥

Binu gur gaathi na chhootaee bhaaee thaake karam kamaai ||

Without the Guru, the knots cannot be untied, O Siblings of Destiny; I am so tired of religious rituals.

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥

इहु जगु भरमि भुलाइआ भाई कहणा किछू न जाइ ॥६॥

Ihu jagu bharami bhulaaiaa bhaaee kaha(nn)aa kichhoo na jaai ||6||

This world is deluded by doubt, O Siblings of Destiny; no one can say anything about it. ||6||


ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਭੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਲੇਖੁ ॥

गुर मिलिऐ भउ मनि वसै भाई भै मरणा सचु लेखु ॥

Gur miliai bhau mani vasai bhaaee bhai mara(nn)aa sachu lekhu ||

Meeting with the Guru, the Fear of God comes to abide in the mind; to die in the Fear of God is one's true destiny.

ਮਜਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥

मजनु दानु चंगिआईआ भाई दरगह नामु विसेखु ॥

Majanu daanu changgiaaeeaa bhaaee daragah naamu visekhu ||

In the Court of the Lord, the Naam is far superior to ritualistic cleansing baths, charity and good deeds, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਚੂਕਾ ਭੇਖੁ ॥੭॥

गुरु अंकसु जिनि नामु द्रिड़ाइआ भाई मनि वसिआ चूका भेखु ॥७॥

Guru ankkasu jini naamu dri(rr)aaiaa bhaaee mani vasiaa chookaa bhekhu ||7||

One who implants the Naam within himself, through the Guru's halter - O Siblings of Destiny, the Lord dwells in his mind, and he is free of hypocrisy. ||7||


ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਹਾਟੁ ਸਰਾਫ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥

इहु तनु हाटु सराफ को भाई वखरु नामु अपारु ॥

Ihu tanu haatu saraaph ko bhaaee vakharu naamu apaaru ||

This body is the jeweler's shop, O Siblings of Destiny; the incomparable Naam is the merchandise.

ਇਹੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਸੋ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

इहु वखरु वापारी सो द्रिड़ै भाई गुर सबदि करे वीचारु ॥

Ihu vakharu vaapaaree so dri(rr)ai bhaaee gur sabadi kare veechaaru ||

The merchant secures this merchandise, O Siblings of Destiny, by contemplating the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਧਨੁ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਮੇਲਿ ਕਰੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥

धनु वापारी नानका भाई मेलि करे वापारु ॥८॥२॥

Dhanu vaapaaree naanakaa bhaaee meli kare vaapaaru ||8||2||

Blessed is the merchant, O Nanak, who meets the Guru, and engages in this trade. ||8||2||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Sorat'h, First Mehl:

ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਤਰੇ ॥

जिन्ही सतिगुरु सेविआ पिआरे तिन्ह के साथ तरे ॥

Jinhee satiguru seviaa piaare tinh ke saath tare ||

Those who serve the True Guru, O Beloved, their companions are saved as well.

ਤਿਨੑਾ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਨ ਹਰੇ ॥

तिन्हा ठाक न पाईऐ पिआरे अम्रित रसन हरे ॥

Tinhaa thaak na paaeeai piaare ammmrit rasan hare ||

No one blocks their way, O Beloved, and the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar is on their tongue.

ਬੂਡੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਭੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥

बूडे भारे भै बिना पिआरे तारे नदरि करे ॥१॥

Boode bhaare bhai binaa piaare taare nadari kare ||1||

Without the Fear of God, they are so heavy that they sink and drown, O Beloved; but the Lord, casting His Glance of Grace, carries them across. ||1||


ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥

भी तूहै सालाहणा पिआरे भी तेरी सालाह ॥

Bhee toohai saalaaha(nn)aa piaare bhee teree saalaah ||

I ever praise You, O Beloved, I ever sing Your Praises.

ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਭੈ ਡੁਬੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੰਧੀ ਪਾਇ ਕਹਾਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

विणु बोहिथ भै डुबीऐ पिआरे कंधी पाइ कहाह ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Vi(nn)u bohith bhai dubeeai piaare kanddhee paai kahaah ||1|| rahaau ||

Without the boat, one is drowned in the sea of fear, O Beloved; how can I reach the distant shore? ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

सालाही सालाहणा पिआरे दूजा अवरु न कोइ ॥

Saalaahee saalaaha(nn)aa piaare doojaa avaru na koi ||

I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, O Beloved; there is no other one to praise.

ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

मेरे प्रभ सालाहनि से भले पिआरे सबदि रते रंगु होइ ॥

Mere prbh saalaahani se bhale piaare sabadi rate ranggu hoi ||

Those who praise my God are good, O Beloved; they are imbued with the Word of the Shabad, and His Love.

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਸੁ ਲੈ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਲੋਇ ॥੨॥

तिस की संगति जे मिलै पिआरे रसु लै ततु विलोइ ॥२॥

Tis kee sanggati je milai piaare rasu lai tatu viloi ||2||

If I join them, O Beloved, I can churn the essence and so find joy. ||2||


ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਚ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥

पति परवाना साच का पिआरे नामु सचा नीसाणु ॥

Pati paravaanaa saach kaa piaare naamu sachaa neesaa(nn)u ||

The gateway to honor is Truth, O Beloved; it bears the Insignia of the True Name of the Lord.

ਆਇਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥

आइआ लिखि लै जावणा पिआरे हुकमी हुकमु पछाणु ॥

Aaiaa likhi lai jaava(nn)aa piaare hukamee hukamu pachhaa(nn)u ||

We come into the world, and we depart, with our destiny written and pre-ordained, O Beloved; realize the Command of the Commander.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥੩॥

गुर बिनु हुकमु न बूझीऐ पिआरे साचे साचा ताणु ॥३॥

Gur binu hukamu na boojheeai piaare saache saachaa taa(nn)u ||3||

Without the Guru, this Command is not understood, O Beloved; True is the Power of the True Lord. ||3||


ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥

हुकमै अंदरि निमिआ पिआरे हुकमै उदर मझारि ॥

Hukamai anddari nimmmiaa piaare hukamai udar majhaari ||

By His Command, we are conceived, O Beloved, and by His Command, we grow in the womb.

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਊਧਉ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰਿ ॥

हुकमै अंदरि जमिआ पिआरे ऊधउ सिर कै भारि ॥

Hukamai anddari jammiaa piaare udhau sir kai bhaari ||

By His Command, we are born, O Beloved, head-first, and upside-down.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥

गुरमुखि दरगह जाणीऐ पिआरे चलै कारज सारि ॥४॥

Guramukhi daragah jaa(nn)eeai piaare chalai kaaraj saari ||4||

The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the Lord, O Beloved; he departs after resolving his affairs. ||4||


ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਦੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

हुकमै अंदरि आइआ पिआरे हुकमे जादो जाइ ॥

Hukamai anddari aaiaa piaare hukame jaado jaai ||

By His Command, one comes into the world, O Beloved, and by His Will, he goes.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥

हुकमे बंन्हि चलाईऐ पिआरे मनमुखि लहै सजाइ ॥

Hukame bannhi chalaaeeai piaare manamukhi lahai sajaai ||

By His Will, some are bound and gagged and driven away, O Beloved; the self-willed manmukhs suffer their punishment.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥

हुकमे सबदि पछाणीऐ पिआरे दरगह पैधा जाइ ॥५॥

Hukame sabadi pachhaa(nn)eeai piaare daragah paidhaa jaai ||5||

By His Command, the Word of the Shabad, is realized, O Beloved, and one goes to the Court of the Lord robed in honor. ||5||


ਹੁਕਮੇ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥

हुकमे गणत गणाईऐ पिआरे हुकमे हउमै दोइ ॥

Hukame ga(nn)at ga(nn)aaeeai piaare hukame haumai doi ||

By His Command, some accounts are accounted for, O Beloved; by His Command, some suffer in egotism and duality.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਇ ॥

हुकमे भवै भवाईऐ पिआरे अवगणि मुठी रोइ ॥

Hukame bhavai bhavaaeeai piaare avaga(nn)i muthee roi ||

By His Command, one wanders in reincarnation, O Beloved; deceived by sins and demerits, he cries out in his suffering.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥

हुकमु सिञापै साह का पिआरे सचु मिलै वडिआई होइ ॥६॥

Hukamu si(ny)aapai saah kaa piaare sachu milai vadiaaee hoi ||6||

If he comes to realize the Command of the Lord's Will, O Beloved, then he is blessed with Truth and Honor. ||6||


ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥

आखणि अउखा आखीऐ पिआरे किउ सुणीऐ सचु नाउ ॥

Aakha(nn)i aukhaa aakheeai piaare kiu su(nn)eeai sachu naau ||

It is so difficult to speak it, O Beloved; how can we speak, and hear, the True Name?

ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨੑ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

जिन्ही सो सालाहिआ पिआरे हउ तिन्ह बलिहारै जाउ ॥

Jinhee so saalaahiaa piaare hau tinh balihaarai jaau ||

I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord, O Beloved.

ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੭॥

नाउ मिलै संतोखीआं पिआरे नदरी मेलि मिलाउ ॥७॥

Naau milai santtokheeaan piaare nadaree meli milaau ||7||

I have obtained the Name, and I am satisfied, O Beloved; by His Grace, I am united in His Union. ||7||


ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥

काइआ कागदु जे थीऐ पिआरे मनु मसवाणी धारि ॥

Kaaiaa kaagadu je theeai piaare manu masavaa(nn)ee dhaari ||

If my body were to become the paper, O Beloved, and my mind the inkpot;

ਲਲਤਾ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਲਿਖਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥

ललता लेखणि सच की पिआरे हरि गुण लिखहु वीचारि ॥

Lalataa lekha(nn)i sach kee piaare hari gu(nn) likhahu veechaari ||

And if my tongue became the pen, O Beloved, I would write, and contemplate, the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.

ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਲਿਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥

धनु लेखारी नानका पिआरे साचु लिखै उरि धारि ॥८॥३॥

Dhanu lekhaaree naanakaa piaare saachu likhai uri dhaari ||8||3||

Blessed is that scribe, O Nanak, who writes the True Name, and enshrines it within his heart. ||8||3||


ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਦੁਤੁਕੀ ॥

सोरठि महला १ पहिला दुतुकी ॥

Sorathi mahalaa 1 pahilaa dutukee ||

Sorat'h, First Mehl, Du-Tukas:

ਤੂ ਗੁਣਦਾਤੌ ਨਿਰਮਲੋ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

तू गुणदातौ निरमलो भाई निरमलु ना मनु होइ ॥

Too gu(nn)adaatau niramalo bhaaee niramalu naa manu hoi ||

You are the Giver of virtue, O Immaculate Lord, but my mind is not immaculate, O Siblings of Destiny.

ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੇ ਭਾਈ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

हम अपराधी निरगुणे भाई तुझ ही ते गुणु सोइ ॥१॥

Ham aparaadhee niragu(nn)e bhaaee tujh hee te gu(nn)u soi ||1||

I am a worthless sinner, O Siblings of Destiny; virtue is obtained from You alone, Lord. ||1||


ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੁ ॥

मेरे प्रीतमा तू करता करि वेखु ॥

Mere preetamaa too karataa kari vekhu ||

O my Beloved Creator Lord, You create, and You behold.

ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हउ पापी पाखंडीआ भाई मनि तनि नाम विसेखु ॥ रहाउ ॥

Hau paapee paakhanddeeaa bhaaee mani tani naam visekhu || rahaau ||

I am a hypocritical sinner, O Siblings of Destiny. Bless my mind and body with Your Name, O Lord. || Pause ||


ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥

बिखु माइआ चितु मोहिआ भाई चतुराई पति खोइ ॥

Bikhu maaiaa chitu mohiaa bhaaee chaturaaee pati khoi ||

The poisonous Maya has enticed the consciousness, O Siblings of Destiny; through clever tricks, one loses his honor.

ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਚਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਮੋਇ ॥੨॥

चित महि ठाकुरु सचि वसै भाई जे गुर गिआनु समोइ ॥२॥

Chit mahi thaakuru sachi vasai bhaaee je gur giaanu samoi ||2||

The True Lord and Master abides in the consciousness, O Siblings of Destiny, if the Guru's spiritual wisdom permeates it. ||2||


ਰੂੜੌ ਰੂੜੌ ਆਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਰੂੜੌ ਲਾਲ ਚਲੂਲੁ ॥

रूड़ौ रूड़ौ आखीऐ भाई रूड़ौ लाल चलूलु ॥

Roo(rr)au roo(rr)au aakheeai bhaaee roo(rr)au laal chaloolu ||

Beautiful, beautiful, the Lord is called, O Siblings of Destiny; beautiful, like the deep crimson color of the poppy.

ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਭੂਲੁ ॥੩॥

जे मनु हरि सिउ बैरागीऐ भाई दरि घरि साचु अभूलु ॥३॥

Je manu hari siu bairaageeai bhaaee dari ghari saachu abhoolu ||3||

If man loves the Lord with detachment, O Siblings of Destiny, he is judged to be true and infallible in the Lord's court and home. ||3||


ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਤੂ ਭਾਈ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥

पाताली आकासि तू भाई घरि घरि तू गुण गिआनु ॥

Paataalee aakaasi too bhaaee ghari ghari too gu(nn) giaanu ||

You are pervading the realms of the underworld and the heavenly skies; Your wisdom and glories are in each and every heart.

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਚੂਕਾ ਮਨਹੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥੪॥

गुर मिलिऐ सुखु पाइआ भाई चूका मनहु गुमानु ॥४॥

Gur miliai sukhu paaiaa bhaaee chookaa manahu gumaanu ||4||

Meeting with the Guru, one finds peace, O Siblings of Destiny, and pride is dispelled from the mind. ||4||


ਜਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਮਾਜੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਭੀ ਮੈਲਾ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

जलि मलि काइआ माजीऐ भाई भी मैला तनु होइ ॥

Jali mali kaaiaa maajeeai bhaaee bhee mailaa tanu hoi ||

Scrubbing with water, the body can be cleaned, O Siblings of Destiny, but the body becomes dirty again.

ਗਿਆਨਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥

गिआनि महा रसि नाईऐ भाई मनु तनु निरमलु होइ ॥५॥

Giaani mahaa rasi naaeeai bhaaee manu tanu niramalu hoi ||5||

Bathing in the supreme essence of spiritual wisdom, O Siblings of Destiny, the mind and body become pure. ||5||


ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਆ ਦੇਹਿ ॥

देवी देवा पूजीऐ भाई किआ मागउ किआ देहि ॥

Devee devaa poojeeai bhaaee kiaa maagau kiaa dehi ||

Why worship gods and goddesses, O Siblings of Destiny? What can we ask of them? What can they give us?

ਪਾਹਣੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਪਖਾਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਤੇਹਿ ॥੬॥

पाहणु नीरि पखालीऐ भाई जल महि बूडहि तेहि ॥६॥

Paaha(nn)u neeri pakhaaleeai bhaaee jal mahi boodahi tehi ||6||

The stone gods are washed with water, O Siblings of Destiny, but they just sink in the water. ||6||


ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਗੁ ਬੂਡੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥

गुर बिनु अलखु न लखीऐ भाई जगु बूडै पति खोइ ॥

Gur binu alakhu na lakheeai bhaaee jagu boodai pati khoi ||

Without the Guru, the unseen Lord cannot be seen, O Siblings of Destiny; the world is drowning, having lost its honor.

ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੭॥

मेरे ठाकुर हाथि वडाईआ भाई जै भावै तै देइ ॥७॥

Mere thaakur haathi vadaaeeaa bhaaee jai bhaavai tai dei ||7||

Greatness is in the hands of my Lord and Master, O Siblings of Destiny; as He is pleased, He gives. ||7||


ਬਈਅਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਮੀਠੁਲੀ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਇ ॥

बईअरि बोलै मीठुली भाई साचु कहै पिर भाइ ॥

Baeeari bolai meethulee bhaaee saachu kahai pir bhaai ||

That soul-bride, who talks sweetly and speaks the Truth, O Siblings of Destiny, becomes pleasing to her Husband Lord.

ਬਿਰਹੈ ਬੇਧੀ ਸਚਿ ਵਸੀ ਭਾਈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੮॥

बिरहै बेधी सचि वसी भाई अधिक रही हरि नाइ ॥८॥

Birahai bedhee sachi vasee bhaaee adhik rahee hari naai ||8||

Pierced by His Love, she abides in Truth, O Siblings of Destiny, deeply imbued with the Lord's Name. ||8||


ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥

सभु को आखै आपणा भाई गुर ते बुझै सुजानु ॥

Sabhu ko aakhai aapa(nn)aa bhaaee gur te bujhai sujaanu ||

Everyone calls God his own, O Siblings of Destiny, but the all-knowing Lord is known only through the Guru.

ਜੋ ਬੀਧੇ ਸੇ ਊਬਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੯॥

जो बीधे से ऊबरे भाई सबदु सचा नीसानु ॥९॥

Jo beedhe se ubare bhaaee sabadu sachaa neesaanu ||9||

Those who are pierced by His Love are saved, O Siblings of Destiny; they bear the Insignia of the True Word of the Shabad. ||9||


ਈਧਨੁ ਅਧਿਕ ਸਕੇਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਰੰਚਕ ਪਾਇ ॥

ईधनु अधिक सकेलीऐ भाई पावकु रंचक पाइ ॥

Eedhanu adhik sakeleeai bhaaee paavaku rancchak paai ||

A large pile of firewood, O Siblings of Destiny, will burn if a small fire is applied.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੧੦॥੪॥

खिनु पलु नामु रिदै वसै भाई नानक मिलणु सुभाइ ॥१०॥४॥

Khinu palu naamu ridai vasai bhaaee naanak mila(nn)u subhaai ||10||4||

In the same way, if the Naam, the Name of the Lord, dwells in the heart for a moment, even for an instant, O Siblings of Destiny, then one meets the Lord with ease, O Nanak. ||10||4||


ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोकु मः १ ॥

Saloku M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਵਣੀ ਜੇ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

सोरठि सदा सुहावणी जे सचा मनि होइ ॥

Sorathi sadaa suhaava(nn)ee je sachaa mani hoi ||

Sorat'h is always beautiful, if it brings the True Lord to dwell in the mind of the soul-bride.

ਦੰਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਤੁ ਮਨਿ ਜੀਭੈ ਸਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

दंदी मैलु न कतु मनि जीभै सचा सोइ ॥

Danddee mailu na katu mani jeebhai sachaa soi ||

Her teeth are clean and her mind is not split by duality; the Name of the True Lord is on her tongue.

ਸਸੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਭੈ ਵਸੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਸੰਗ ॥

ससुरै पेईऐ भै वसी सतिगुरु सेवि निसंग ॥

Sasurai peeeai bhai vasee satiguru sevi nisangg ||

Here and hereafter, she abides in the Fear of God, and serves the True Guru without hesitation.

ਪਰਹਰਿ ਕਪੜੁ ਜੇ ਪਿਰ ਮਿਲੈ ਖੁਸੀ ਰਾਵੈ ਪਿਰੁ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

परहरि कपड़ु जे पिर मिलै खुसी रावै पिरु संगि ॥

Parahari kapa(rr)u je pir milai khusee raavai piru sanggi ||

Discarding worldly adornments, she meets her Husband Lord, and she celebrates joyfully with Him.

ਸਦਾ ਸੀਗਾਰੀ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ॥

सदा सीगारी नाउ मनि कदे न मैलु पतंगु ॥

Sadaa seegaaree naau mani kade na mailu patanggu ||

She is adorned forever with the Name in her mind, and she does not have even an iota of filth.

ਦੇਵਰ ਜੇਠ ਮੁਏ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਸੂ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ॥

देवर जेठ मुए दुखि ससू का डरु किसु ॥

Devar jeth mue dukhi sasoo kaa daru kisu ||

Her husband's younger and elder brothers, the corrupt desires, have died, suffering in pain; and now, who fears Maya, the mother-in-law?

ਜੇ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਮ ਮਣੀ ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ॥੧॥

जे पिर भावै नानका करम मणी सभु सचु ॥१॥

Je pir bhaavai naanakaa karam ma(nn)ee sabhu sachu ||1||

If she becomes pleasing to her Husband Lord, O Nanak, she bears the jewel of good karma upon her forehead, and everything is Truth to her. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਇਕ ਦਝਹਿ ਇਕ ਦਬੀਅਹਿ ਇਕਨਾ ਕੁਤੇ ਖਾਹਿ ॥

इक दझहि इक दबीअहि इकना कुते खाहि ॥

Ik dajhahi ik dabeeahi ikanaa kute khaahi ||

Some are cremated, and some are buried; some are eaten by dogs.

ਇਕਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਸਣਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥

इकि पाणी विचि उसटीअहि इकि भी फिरि हसणि पाहि ॥

Iki paa(nn)ee vichi usateeahi iki bhee phiri hasa(nn)i paahi ||

Some are thrown into water, while others are thrown into wells.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

नानक एव न जापई किथै जाइ समाहि ॥२॥

Naanak ev na jaapaee kithai jaai samaahi ||2||

O Nanak, it is not known, where they go and into what they merge. ||2||


ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

सलोक मः १ ॥

Salok M: 1 ||

Shalok, First Mehl:

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਰਜਾਇ ਲੇਖਿਆ ਪਾਇ ਅਬ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਪਾਂਡੇ ॥

ता की रजाइ लेखिआ पाइ अब किआ कीजै पांडे ॥

Taa kee rajaai lekhiaa paai ab kiaa keejai paande ||

By His Command, we receive our pre-ordained rewards; so what can we do now, O Pandit?

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੋਆ ਹਾਸਲੁ ਤਦੇ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੜਿਆ ਹੰਢਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਕਮਾਂਦੇ ॥੧॥

हुकमु होआ हासलु तदे होइ निबड़िआ हंढहि जीअ कमांदे ॥१॥

Hukamu hoaa haasalu tade hoi niba(rr)iaa handdhahi jeea kamaande ||1||

When His Command is received, then it is decided; all beings move and act accordingly. ||1||


ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ੧ ਚਉਪਦੇ

धनासरी महला १ घरु १ चउपदे

Dhanaasaree mahalaa 1 gharu 1 chaupade

Dhanaasaree, First Mehl, First House, Chau-Padas:

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ੴ सति नामु करता पुरखु निरभउ निरवैरु अकाल मूरति अजूनी सैभं गुरप्रसादि ॥

Ik-oamkkaari sati naamu karataa purakhu nirabhau niravairu akaal moorati ajoonee saibhann guraprsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying. Beyond Birth. Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace:

ਜੀਉ ਡਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਉ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥

जीउ डरतु है आपणा कै सिउ करी पुकार ॥

Jeeu daratu hai aapa(nn)aa kai siu karee pukaar ||

My soul is afraid; to whom should I complain?

ਦੂਖ ਵਿਸਾਰਣੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

दूख विसारणु सेविआ सदा सदा दातारु ॥१॥

Dookh visaara(nn)u seviaa sadaa sadaa daataaru ||1||

I serve Him, who makes me forget my pains; He is the Giver, forever and ever. ||1||


ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਨੀਤ ਨਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

साहिबु मेरा नीत नवा सदा सदा दातारु ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Saahibu meraa neet navaa sadaa sadaa daataaru ||1|| rahaau ||

My Lord and Master is forever new; He is the Giver, forever and ever. ||1|| Pause ||


ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅੰਤਿ ਛਡਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥

अनदिनु साहिबु सेवीऐ अंति छडाए सोइ ॥

Anadinu saahibu seveeai antti chhadaae soi ||

Night and day, I serve my Lord and Master; He shall save me in the end.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਮਣੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

सुणि सुणि मेरी कामणी पारि उतारा होइ ॥२॥

Su(nn)i su(nn)i meree kaama(nn)ee paari utaaraa hoi ||2||

Hearing and listening, O my dear sister, I have crossed over. ||2||


ਦਇਆਲ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾ ॥

दइआल तेरै नामि तरा ॥

Daiaal terai naami taraa ||

O Merciful Lord, Your Name carries me across.

सद कुरबाणै जाउ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Sad kurabaa(nn)ai jaau ||1|| rahaau ||

I am forever a sacrifice to You. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਰਬੰ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥

सरबं साचा एकु है दूजा नाही कोइ ॥

Sarabann saachaa eku hai doojaa naahee koi ||

In all the world, there is only the One True Lord; there is no other at all.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੩॥

ता की सेवा सो करे जा कउ नदरि करे ॥३॥

Taa kee sevaa so kare jaa kau nadari kare ||3||

He alone serves the Lord, upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace. ||3||


ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਝੁ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੇਵ ਰਹਾ ॥

तुधु बाझु पिआरे केव रहा ॥

Tudhu baajhu piaare kev rahaa ||

Without You, O Beloved, how could I even live?

ਸਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਹਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾਂ ॥

सा वडिआई देहि जितु नामि तेरे लागि रहां ॥

Saa vadiaaee dehi jitu naami tere laagi rahaan ||

Bless me with such greatness, that I may remain attached to Your Name.

ਦੂਜਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

दूजा नाही कोइ जिसु आगै पिआरे जाइ कहा ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Doojaa naahee koi jisu aagai piaare jaai kahaa ||1|| rahaau ||

There is no other, O Beloved, to whom I can go and speak. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸੇਵੀ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਚੰਉ ਕੋਇ ॥

सेवी साहिबु आपणा अवरु न जाचंउ कोइ ॥

Sevee saahibu aapa(nn)aa avaru na jaachannu koi ||

I serve my Lord and Master; I ask for no other.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਬਿੰਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਚੁਖ ਚੁਖ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥

नानकु ता का दासु है बिंद बिंद चुख चुख होइ ॥४॥

Naanaku taa kaa daasu hai bindd bindd chukh chukh hoi ||4||

Nanak is His slave; moment by moment, bit by bit, he is a sacrifice to Him. ||4||


ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਬਿੰਦ ਬਿੰਦ ਚੁਖ ਚੁਖ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥੪॥੧॥

साहिब तेरे नाम विटहु बिंद बिंद चुख चुख होइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥४॥१॥

Saahib tere naam vitahu bindd bindd chukh chukh hoi ||1|| rahaau ||4||1||

O Lord Master, I am a sacrifice to Your Name, moment by moment, bit by bit. ||1|| Pause ||4||1||


ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Dhanaasaree mahalaa 1 ||

Dhanaasaree, First Mehl:

ਹਮ ਆਦਮੀ ਹਾਂ ਇਕ ਦਮੀ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

हम आदमी हां इक दमी मुहलति मुहतु न जाणा ॥

Ham aadamee haan ik damee muhalati muhatu na jaa(nn)aa ||

We are human beings of the briefest moment; we do not know the appointed time of our departure.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਸਰੇਵਹੁ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣਾ ॥੧॥

नानकु बिनवै तिसै सरेवहु जा के जीअ पराणा ॥१॥

Naanaku binavai tisai sarevahu jaa ke jeea paraa(nn)aa ||1||

Prays Nanak, serve the One, to whom our soul and breath of life belong. ||1||


ਅੰਧੇ ਜੀਵਨਾ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਕੇ ਦਿਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

अंधे जीवना वीचारि देखि केते के दिना ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Anddhe jeevanaa veechaari dekhi kete ke dinaa ||1|| rahaau ||

You are blind - see and consider, how many days your life shall last. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਾਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ਤੂ ਮੈ ਖਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

सासु मासु सभु जीउ तुमारा तू मै खरा पिआरा ॥

Saasu maasu sabhu jeeu tumaaraa too mai kharaa piaaraa ||

My breath, my flesh and my soul are all Yours, Lord; You are so very dear to me.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਇਰੁ ਏਵ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਦਗਾਰਾ ॥੨॥

नानकु साइरु एव कहतु है सचे परवदगारा ॥२॥

Naanaku saairu ev kahatu hai sache paravadagaaraa ||2||

Nanak, the poet, says this, O True Lord Cherisher. ||2||


ਜੇ ਤੂ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਦੇਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਢੈ ਗਹਣਾ ॥

जे तू किसै न देही मेरे साहिबा किआ को कढै गहणा ॥

Je too kisai na dehee mere saahibaa kiaa ko kadhai gaha(nn)aa ||

If you gave nothing, O my Lord and Master, what could anyone pledge to You?

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਿਨਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਾ ਲਹਣਾ ॥੩॥

नानकु बिनवै सो किछु पाईऐ पुरबि लिखे का लहणा ॥३॥

Naanaku binavai so kichhu paaeeai purabi likhe kaa laha(nn)aa ||3||

Nanak prays, we receive that which we are pre-destined to receive. ||3||


ਨਾਮੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਆ ਕਪਟੀ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥

नामु खसम का चिति न कीआ कपटी कपटु कमाणा ॥

Naamu khasam kaa chiti na keeaa kapatee kapatu kamaa(nn)aa ||

The deceitful person does not remember the Lord's Name; he practices only deceit.

ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ਜਾ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਚਲਦਾ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੪॥

जम दुआरि जा पकड़ि चलाइआ ता चलदा पछुताणा ॥४॥

Jam duaari jaa paka(rr)i chalaaiaa taa chaladaa pachhutaa(nn)aa ||4||

When he is marched in chains to Death's door, then, he regrets his actions. ||4||


ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਰਹੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥

जब लगु दुनीआ रहीऐ नानक किछु सुणीऐ किछु कहीऐ ॥

Jab lagu duneeaa raheeai naanak kichhu su(nn)eeai kichhu kaheeai ||

As long as we are in this world, O Nanak, we should listen, and speak of the Lord.

ਭਾਲਿ ਰਹੇ ਹਮ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੀਵਤਿਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੫॥੨॥

भालि रहे हम रहणु न पाइआ जीवतिआ मरि रहीऐ ॥५॥२॥

Bhaali rahe ham raha(nn)u na paaiaa jeevatiaa mari raheeai ||5||2||

I have searched, but I have found no way to remain here; so, remain dead while yet alive. ||5||2||


ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਘਰੁ ਦੂਜਾ

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

Ik-oamkkaari satigur prsaadi ||

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:

ਕਿਉ ਸਿਮਰੀ ਸਿਵਰਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

किउ सिमरी सिवरिआ नही जाइ ॥

Kiu simaree sivariaa nahee jaai ||

How can I remember the Lord in meditation? I cannot meditate on Him in remembrance.

ਤਪੈ ਹਿਆਉ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥

तपै हिआउ जीअड़ा बिललाइ ॥

Tapai hiaau jeea(rr)aa bilalaai ||

My heart is burning, and my soul is crying out in pain.

ਸਿਰਜਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥

सिरजि सवारे साचा सोइ ॥

Siraji savaare saachaa soi ||

The True Lord creates and adorns.

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਚੰਗਾ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥

तिसु विसरिऐ चंगा किउ होइ ॥१॥

Tisu visariai changgaa kiu hoi ||1||

Forgetting Him, how can one be good? ||1||


ਹਿਕਮਤਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

हिकमति हुकमि न पाइआ जाइ ॥

Hikamati hukami na paaiaa jaai ||

By clever tricks and commands, He cannot be found.

ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

किउ करि साचि मिलउ मेरी माइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Kiu kari saachi milau meree maai ||1|| rahaau ||

How am I to meet my True Lord, O my mother? ||1|| Pause ||


ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਖਣ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਇ ॥

वखरु नामु देखण कोई जाइ ॥

Vakharu naamu dekha(nn) koee jaai ||

How rare is the one who goes out, and searches for the merchandise of the Naam.

ਨਾ ਕੋ ਚਾਖੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਖਾਇ ॥

ना को चाखै ना को खाइ ॥

Naa ko chaakhai naa ko khaai ||

No one tastes it, and no one eats it.

ਲੋਕਿ ਪਤੀਣੈ ਨਾ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

लोकि पतीणै ना पति होइ ॥

Loki patee(nn)ai naa pati hoi ||

Honor is not obtained by trying to please other people.

ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਹੈ ਰਾਖੈ ਜਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥

ता पति रहै राखै जा सोइ ॥२॥

Taa pati rahai raakhai jaa soi ||2||

One's honor is preserved, only if the Lord preserves it. ||2||


ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

जह देखा तह रहिआ समाइ ॥

Jah dekhaa tah rahiaa samaai ||

Wherever I look, there I see Him, pervading and permeating.

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥

तुधु बिनु दूजी नाही जाइ ॥

Tudhu binu doojee naahee jaai ||

Without You, I have no other place of rest.

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਕੀਤੈ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥

जे को करे कीतै किआ होइ ॥

Je ko kare keetai kiaa hoi ||

He may try, but what can anyone do by his own doing?

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥

जिस नो बखसे साचा सोइ ॥३॥

Jis no bakhase saachaa soi ||3||

He alone is blessed, whom the True Lord forgives. ||3||


ਹੁਣਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਤਾਲਿ ॥

हुणि उठि चलणा मुहति कि तालि ॥

Hu(nn)i uthi chala(nn)aa muhati ki taali ||

Now, I shall have to get up and depart, in an instant, in the clapping of hands.

ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹੁ ਦੇਸਾ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

किआ मुहु देसा गुण नही नालि ॥

Kiaa muhu desaa gu(nn) nahee naali ||

What face will I show the Lord? I have no virtue at all.

ਜੈਸੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

जैसी नदरि करे तैसा होइ ॥

Jaisee nadari kare taisaa hoi ||

As is the Lord's Glance of Grace, so it is.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੧॥੩॥

विणु नदरी नानक नही कोइ ॥४॥१॥३॥

Vi(nn)u nadaree naanak nahee koi ||4||1||3||

Without His Glance of Grace, O Nanak, no one is blessed. ||4||1||3||

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

Nadari kare taa simariaa jaai ||

If the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then one remembers Him in meditation.

ਆਤਮਾ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

आतमा द्रवै रहै लिव लाइ ॥

Aatamaa drvai rahai liv laai ||

The soul is softened, and he remains absorbed in the Lord's Love.

ਆਤਮਾ ਪਰਾਤਮਾ ਏਕੋ ਕਰੈ ॥

आतमा परातमा एको करै ॥

Aatamaa paraatamaa eko karai ||

His soul and the Supreme Soul become one.

ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੧॥

अंतर की दुबिधा अंतरि मरै ॥१॥

Anttar kee dubidhaa anttari marai ||1||

The duality of the inner mind is overcome. ||1||


ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥

गुर परसादी पाइआ जाइ ॥

Gur parasaadee paaiaa jaai ||

By Guru's Grace, God is found.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

हरि सिउ चितु लागै फिरि कालु न खाइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Hari siu chitu laagai phiri kaalu na khaai ||1|| rahaau ||

One's consciousness is attached to the Lord, and so Death does not devour him. ||1|| Pause ||


ਸਚਿ ਸਿਮਰਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥

सचि सिमरिऐ होवै परगासु ॥

Sachi simariai hovai paragaasu ||

Remembering the True Lord in meditation, one is enlightened.

ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਰਹੈ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥

ता ते बिखिआ महि रहै उदासु ॥

Taa te bikhiaa mahi rahai udaasu ||

Then, in the midst of Maya, he remains detached.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਐਸੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥

सतिगुर की ऐसी वडिआई ॥

Satigur kee aisee vadiaaee ||

Such is the Glory of the True Guru;

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਚੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥

पुत्र कलत्र विचे गति पाई ॥२॥

Putr kalatr viche gati paaee ||2||

In the midst of children and spouses, they attain emancipation. ||2||


ਐਸੀ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ ॥

ऐसी सेवकु सेवा करै ॥

Aisee sevaku sevaa karai ||

Such is the service which the Lord's servant performs,

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਧਰੈ ॥

जिस का जीउ तिसु आगै धरै ॥

Jis kaa jeeu tisu aagai dharai ||

That he dedicates his soul to the Lord, to whom it belongs.

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

साहिब भावै सो परवाणु ॥

Saahib bhaavai so paravaa(nn)u ||

One who is pleasing to the Lord and Master is acceptable.

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੩॥

सो सेवकु दरगह पावै माणु ॥३॥

So sevaku daragah paavai maa(nn)u ||3||

Such a servant obtains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||3||


ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥

सतिगुर की मूरति हिरदै वसाए ॥

Satigur kee moorati hiradai vasaae ||

He enshrines the image of the True Guru in his heart.

ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥

जो इछै सोई फलु पाए ॥

Jo ichhai soee phalu paae ||

He obtains the rewards which he desires.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥

साचा साहिबु किरपा करै ॥

Saachaa saahibu kirapaa karai ||

The True Lord and Master grants His Grace;

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਕੈਸਾ ਡਰੈ ॥੪॥

सो सेवकु जम ते कैसा डरै ॥४॥

So sevaku jam te kaisaa darai ||4||

How can such a servant be afraid of death? ||4||


ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

भनति नानकु करे वीचारु ॥

Bhanati naanaku kare veechaaru ||

Prays Nanak, practice contemplation,

ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥

साची बाणी सिउ धरे पिआरु ॥

Saachee baa(nn)ee siu dhare piaaru ||

And enshrine love for the True Word of His Bani.

ਤਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਵੈ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

ता को पावै मोख दुआरु ॥

Taa ko paavai mokh duaaru ||

Then, you shall find the Gate of Salvation.

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸਭੁ ਇਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੫॥੨॥੪॥

जपु तपु सभु इहु सबदु है सारु ॥५॥२॥४॥

Japu tapu sabhu ihu sabadu hai saaru ||5||2||4||

This Shabad is the most excellent of all chanting and austere meditations. ||5||2||4||

ਜੀਉ ਤਪਤੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਰੋ ਬਾਰ ॥

जीउ तपतु है बारो बार ॥

Jeeu tapatu hai baaro baar ||

My soul burns, over and over again.

ਤਪਿ ਤਪਿ ਖਪੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬੇਕਾਰ ॥

तपि तपि खपै बहुतु बेकार ॥

Tapi tapi khapai bahutu bekaar ||

Burning and burning, it is ruined, and it falls into evil.

ਜੈ ਤਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

जै तनि बाणी विसरि जाइ ॥

Jai tani baa(nn)ee visari jaai ||

That body, which forgets the Word of the Guru's Bani

ਜਿਉ ਪਕਾ ਰੋਗੀ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੧॥

जिउ पका रोगी विललाइ ॥१॥

Jiu pakaa rogee vilalaai ||1||

Cries out in pain, like a chronic patient. ||1||


ਬਹੁਤਾ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਝਖਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

बहुता बोलणु झखणु होइ ॥

Bahutaa bola(nn)u jhakha(nn)u hoi ||

To speak too much and babble is useless.

ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

विणु बोले जाणै सभु सोइ ॥१॥ रहाउ ॥

Vi(nn)u bole jaa(nn)ai sabhu soi ||1|| rahaau ||

Even without our speaking, He knows everything. ||1|| Pause ||


ਜਿਨਿ ਕਨ ਕੀਤੇ ਅਖੀ ਨਾਕੁ ॥

जिनि कन कीते अखी नाकु ॥

Jini kan keete akhee naaku ||

He created our ears, eyes and nose.

ਜਿਨਿ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਦਿਤੀ ਬੋਲੇ ਤਾਤੁ ॥

जिनि जिहवा दिती बोले तातु ॥

Jini jihavaa ditee bole taatu ||

He gave us our tongue to speak so fluently.

ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥

जिनि मनु राखिआ अगनी पाइ ॥

Jini manu raakhiaa aganee paai ||

He preserved the mind in the fire of the womb;

ਵਾਜੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਆਖੈ ਸਭ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥

वाजै पवणु आखै सभ जाइ ॥२॥

Vaajai pava(nn)u aakhai sabh jaai ||2||

At His Command, the wind blows everywhere. ||2||


ਜੇਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਸੁਆਦ ॥

जेता मोहु परीति सुआद ॥

Jetaa mohu pareeti suaad ||

These worldly attachments, loves and pleasurable tastes,

ਸਭਾ ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾਗਾ ਦਾਗ ॥

सभा कालख दागा दाग ॥

Sabhaa kaalakh daagaa daag ||

All are just black stains.

दाग दोस मुहि चलिआ लाइ ॥

Daag dos muhi chaliaa laai ||

One who departs, with these black stains of sin on his face

ਦਰਗਹ ਬੈਸਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

दरगह बैसण नाही जाइ ॥३॥

Daragah baisa(nn) naahee jaai ||3||

Shall find no place to sit in the Court of the Lord. ||3||


ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਖਣੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥

करमि मिलै आखणु तेरा नाउ ॥

Karami milai aakha(nn)u teraa naau ||
