ਦੇਹ ਤੇਜਣਿ ਜੀ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

देह तेजणि जी रामि उपाईआ राम ॥

Deh teja(nn)i jee raami upaaeeaa raam ||

This body-horse was created by the Lord.

ਧੰਨੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਪਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

धंनु माणस जनमु पुंनि पाईआ राम ॥

Dhannu maa(nn)as janamu punni paaeeaa raam ||

Blessed is human life, which is obtained by virtuous actions.

ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਡ ਪੁੰਨੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੇਹ ਸੁ ਕੰਚਨ ਚੰਗੜੀਆ ॥

माणस जनमु वड पुंने पाइआ देह सु कंचन चंगड़ीआ ॥

Maa(nn)as janamu vad punne paaiaa deh su kancchan changga(rr)eeaa ||

Human life is obtained only by the most virtuous actions; this body is radiant and golden.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਚਲੂਲਾ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਵ ਰੰਗੜੀਆ ॥

गुरमुखि रंगु चलूला पावै हरि हरि हरि नव रंगड़ीआ ॥

Guramukhi ranggu chaloolaa paavai hari hari hari nav rangga(rr)eeaa ||

The Gurmukh is imbued with the deep red color of the poppy; he is imbued with the new color of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, Har.

ਏਹ ਦੇਹ ਸੁ ਬਾਂਕੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀਆ ॥

एह देह सु बांकी जितु हरि जापी हरि हरि नामि सुहावीआ ॥

Eh deh su baankee jitu hari jaapee hari hari naami suhaaveeaa ||

This body is so very beautiful; it chants the Name of the Lord, and it is adorned with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈਆ ॥੧॥

वडभागी पाई नामु सखाई जन नानक रामि उपाईआ ॥१॥

Vadabhaagee paaee naamu sakhaaee jan naanak raami upaaeeaa ||1||

By great good fortune, the body is obtained; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is its companion; O servant Nanak, the Lord has created it. ||1||


ਦੇਹ ਪਾਵਉ ਜੀਨੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਚੰਗਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

देह पावउ जीनु बुझि चंगा राम ॥

Deh paavau jeenu bujhi changgaa raam ||

I place the saddle on the body-horse, the saddle of realization of the Good Lord.

ਚੜਿ ਲੰਘਾ ਜੀ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

चड़ि लंघा जी बिखमु भुइअंगा राम ॥

Cha(rr)i langghaa jee bikhamu bhuianggaa raam ||

Riding this horse, I cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਬਿਖਮੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਏ ॥

बिखमु भुइअंगा अनत तरंगा गुरमुखि पारि लंघाए ॥

Bikhamu bhuianggaa anat taranggaa guramukhi paari langghaae ||

The terrifying world-ocean is rocked by countless waves, but the Gurmukh is carried across.

ਹਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥਿ ਚੜਿ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਲੰਘੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਾਏ ॥

हरि बोहिथि चड़ि वडभागी लंघै गुरु खेवटु सबदि तराए ॥

Hari bohithi cha(rr)i vadabhaagee langghai guru khevatu sabadi taraae ||

Embarking upon the boat of the Lord, the very fortunate ones cross over; the Guru, the Boatman, carries them across through the Word of the Shabad.

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥

अनदिनु हरि रंगि हरि गुण गावै हरि रंगी हरि रंगा ॥

Anadinu hari ranggi hari gu(nn) gaavai hari ranggee hari ranggaa ||

Night and day, imbued with the Lord's Love, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the Lord's lover loves the Lord.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਉਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੰਗਾ ॥੨॥

जन नानक निरबाण पदु पाइआ हरि उतमु हरि पदु चंगा ॥२॥

Jan naanak nirabaa(nn) padu paaiaa hari utamu hari padu changgaa ||2||

Servant Nanak has obtained the state of Nirvaanaa, the state of ultimate goodness, the state of the Lord. ||2||


ਕੜੀਆਲੁ ਮੁਖੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

कड़ीआलु मुखे गुरि गिआनु द्रिड़ाइआ राम ॥

Ka(rr)eeaalu mukhe guri giaanu dri(rr)aaiaa raam ||

For a bridle in my mouth, the Guru has implanted spiritual wisdom within me.

ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਚਾਬਕੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

तनि प्रेमु हरि चाबकु लाइआ राम ॥

Tani premu hari chaabaku laaiaa raam ||

He has applied the whip of the Lord's Love to my body.

ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇ ਚਾਬਕੁ ਮਨੁ ਜਿਣੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ॥

तनि प्रेमु हरि हरि लाइ चाबकु मनु जिणै गुरमुखि जीतिआ ॥

Tani premu hari hari laai chaabaku manu ji(nn)ai guramukhi jeetiaa ||

Applying the whip of the Lord's Love to his body, the Gurmukh conquers his mind, and wins the battle of life.

ਅਘੜੋ ਘੜਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਅਪਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਿਆ ॥

अघड़ो घड़ावै सबदु पावै अपिउ हरि रसु पीतिआ ॥

Agha(rr)o gha(rr)aavai sabadu paavai apiu hari rasu peetiaa ||

He trains his untrained mind with the Word of the Shabad, and drinks in the rejuvenating essence of the Lord's Nectar.

ਸੁਣਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਤੁਰੀ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥

सुणि स्रवण बाणी गुरि वखाणी हरि रंगु तुरी चड़ाइआ ॥

Su(nn)i srva(nn) baa(nn)ee guri vakhaa(nn)ee hari ranggu turee cha(rr)aaiaa ||

Listen with your ears to the Word, uttered by the Guru, and attune your body-horse to the Lord's Love.

ਮਹਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

महा मारगु पंथु बिखड़ा जन नानक पारि लंघाइआ ॥३॥

Mahaa maaragu pantthu bikha(rr)aa jan naanak paari langghaaiaa ||3||

Servant Nanak has crossed over the long and treacherous path. ||3||


ਘੋੜੀ ਤੇਜਣਿ ਦੇਹ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

घोड़ी तेजणि देह रामि उपाईआ राम ॥

Gho(rr)ee teja(nn)i deh raami upaaeeaa raam ||

The transitory body-horse was created by the Lord.

ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਾ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਤੁਖਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

जितु हरि प्रभु जापै सा धनु धंनु तुखाईआ राम ॥

Jitu hari prbhu jaapai saa dhanu dhannu tukhaaeeaa raam ||

Blessed, blessed is that body-horse which meditates on the Lord God.

ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਾ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਾਬਾਸੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਜੁੜੰਦਾ ॥

जितु हरि प्रभु जापै सा धंनु साबासै धुरि पाइआ किरतु जुड़ंदा ॥

Jitu hari prbhu jaapai saa dhannu saabaasai dhuri paaiaa kiratu ju(rr)anddaa ||

Blessed and acclaimed is that body-horse which meditates on the Lord God; it is obtained by the merits of past actions.

ਚੜਿ ਦੇਹੜਿ ਘੋੜੀ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਲਘਾਏ ਮਿਲੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥

चड़ि देहड़ि घोड़ी बिखमु लघाए मिलु गुरमुखि परमानंदा ॥

Cha(rr)i deha(rr)i gho(rr)ee bikhamu laghaae milu guramukhi paramaananddaa ||

Riding the body-horse, one crosses over the terrifying world ocean; the Gurmukh meets the Lord, the embodiment of supreme bliss.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਜੰਞ ਆਈ ॥

हरि हरि काजु रचाइआ पूरै मिलि संत जना जंञ आई ॥

Hari hari kaaju rachaaiaa poorai mili santt janaa jan(ny) aaee ||

The Lord, Har, Har, has perfectly arranged this wedding; the Saints have come together as a marriage party.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੫॥

जन नानक हरि वरु पाइआ मंगलु मिलि संत जना वाधाई ॥४॥१॥५॥

Jan naanak hari varu paaiaa manggalu mili santt janaa vaadhaaee ||4||1||5||

Servant Nanak has obtained the Lord as his Spouse; joining together, the Saints sing the songs of joy and congratulations. ||4||1||5||

ਦੇਹ ਤੇਜਨੜੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਵ ਰੰਗੀਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

देह तेजनड़ी हरि नव रंगीआ राम ॥

Deh tejana(rr)ee hari nav ranggeeaa raam ||

The body is the Lord's horse; the Lord imbues it with the fresh and new color.

ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਗੀਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

गुर गिआनु गुरू हरि मंगीआ राम ॥

Gur giaanu guroo hari manggeeaa raam ||

From the Guru, I ask for the Lord's spiritual wisdom.

ਗਿਆਨ ਮੰਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਚੰਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥

गिआन मंगी हरि कथा चंगी हरि नामु गति मिति जाणीआ ॥

Giaan manggee hari kathaa changgee hari naamu gati miti jaa(nn)eeaa ||

I ask for the Lord's spiritual wisdom, and the Lord's sublime sermon; through the Name of the Lord, I have come to know His value and His state.

ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਫਲਿਉ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਆ ॥

सभु जनमु सफलिउ कीआ करतै हरि राम नामि वखाणीआ ॥

Sabhu janamu saphaliu keeaa karatai hari raam naami vakhaa(nn)eeaa ||

The Creator has made my life totally fruitful; I chant the Name of the Lord.

ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੰਗੀਆ ॥

हरि राम नामु सलाहि हरि प्रभ हरि भगति हरि जन मंगीआ ॥

Hari raam naamu salaahi hari prbh hari bhagati hari jan manggeeaa ||

The Lord's humble servant begs for the Lord's Name, for the Lord's Praises, and for devotional worship of the Lord God.

ਜਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਚੰਗੀਆ ॥੧॥

जनु कहै नानकु सुणहु संतहु हरि भगति गोविंद चंगीआ ॥१॥

Janu kahai naanaku su(nn)ahu santtahu hari bhagati govindd changgeeaa ||1||

Says servant Nanak, listen, O Saints: devotional worship of the Lord, the Lord of the Universe, is sublime and good. ||1||


ਦੇਹ ਕੰਚਨ ਜੀਨੁ ਸੁਵਿਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

देह कंचन जीनु सुविना राम ॥

Deh kancchan jeenu suvinaa raam ||

The golden body is saddled with the saddle of gold.

ਜੜਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤੰਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥

जड़ि हरि हरि नामु रतंना राम ॥

Ja(rr)i hari hari naamu ratannaa raam ||

It is adorned with the jewel of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.

ਜੜਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸੁਖ ਘਣੇ ॥

जड़ि नाम रतनु गोविंद पाइआ हरि मिले हरि गुण सुख घणे ॥

Ja(rr)i naam ratanu govindd paaiaa hari mile hari gu(nn) sukh gha(nn)e ||

Adorned with the jewel of the Naam, one obtains the Lord of the Universe; he meets the Lord, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and obtains all sorts of comforts.

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਹਰਿ ਬਣੇ ॥

गुर सबदु पाइआ हरि नामु धिआइआ वडभागी हरि रंग हरि बणे ॥

Gur sabadu paaiaa hari naamu dhiaaiaa vadabhaagee hari rangg hari ba(nn)e ||

He obtains the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and he meditates on the Name of the Lord; by great good fortune, he assumes the color of the Lord's Love.

ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਵਤਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਵ ਰੰਗੀਆ ॥

हरि मिले सुआमी अंतरजामी हरि नवतन हरि नव रंगीआ ॥

Hari mile suaamee anttarajaamee hari navatan hari nav ranggeeaa ||

He meets his Lord and Master, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts; His body is ever-new, and His color is ever-fresh.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੰਗੀਆ ॥੨॥

नानकु वखाणै नामु जाणै हरि नामु हरि प्रभ मंगीआ ॥२॥

Naanaku vakhaa(nn)ai naamu jaa(nn)ai hari naamu hari prbh manggeeaa ||2||

Nanak chants and realizes the Naam; he begs for the Name of the Lord, the Lord God. ||2||


ਕੜੀਆਲੁ ਮੁਖੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

कड़ीआलु मुखे गुरि अंकसु पाइआ राम ॥

Ka(rr)eeaalu mukhe guri ankkasu paaiaa raam ||

The Guru has placed the reins in the mouth of the body-horse.

ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

मनु मैगलु गुर सबदि वसि आइआ राम ॥

Manu maigalu gur sabadi vasi aaiaa raam ||

The mind-elephant is overpowered by the Word of the Guru's Shabad.

ਮਨੁ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥

मनु वसगति आइआ परम पदु पाइआ सा धन कंति पिआरी ॥

Manu vasagati aaiaa param padu paaiaa saa dhan kantti piaaree ||

The bride obtains the supreme status, as her mind is brought under control; she is the beloved of her Husband Lord.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਲਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

अंतरि प्रेमु लगा हरि सेती घरि सोहै हरि प्रभ नारी ॥

Anttari premu lagaa hari setee ghari sohai hari prbh naaree ||

Deep within her inner self, she is in love with her Lord; in His home, she is beautiful - she is the bride of her Lord God.

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

हरि रंगि राती सहजे माती हरि प्रभु हरि हरि पाइआ ॥

Hari ranggi raatee sahaje maatee hari prbhu hari hari paaiaa ||

Imbued with the Lord's Love, she is intuitively absorbed in bliss; she obtains the Lord God, Har, Har.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੩॥

नानक जनु हरि दासु कहतु है वडभागी हरि हरि धिआइआ ॥३॥

Naanak janu hari daasu kahatu hai vadabhaagee hari hari dhiaaiaa ||3||

Servant Nanak, the Lord's slave, says that only the very fortunate meditate on the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||


ਦੇਹ ਘੋੜੀ ਜੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

देह घोड़ी जी जितु हरि पाइआ राम ॥

Deh gho(rr)ee jee jitu hari paaiaa raam ||

The body is the horse, upon which one rides to the Lord.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜੀ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥

मिलि सतिगुर जी मंगलु गाइआ राम ॥

Mili satigur jee manggalu gaaiaa raam ||

Meeting with the True Guru, one sings the songs of joy.

ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਕੀ ॥

हरि गाइ मंगलु राम नामा हरि सेव सेवक सेवकी ॥

Hari gaai manggalu raam naamaa hari sev sevak sevakee ||

Sing the songs of joy to the Lord, serve the Name of the Lord, and become the servant of His servants.

ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਵੈ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੈ ਰੰਗ ਕੀ ॥

प्रभ जाइ पावै रंग महली हरि रंगु माणै रंग की ॥

Prbh jaai paavai rangg mahalee hari ranggu maa(nn)ai rangg kee ||

You shall go and enter the Mansion of the Beloved Lord's Presence, and lovingly enjoy His Love.

ਗੁਣ ਰਾਮ ਗਾਏ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥

गुण राम गाए मनि सुभाए हरि गुरमती मनि धिआइआ ॥

Gu(nn) raam gaae mani subhaae hari guramatee mani dhiaaiaa ||

I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, so pleasing to my mind; following the Guru's Teachings, I meditate on the Lord within my mind.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਦੇਹ ਘੋੜੀ ਚੜਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥੬॥

जन नानक हरि किरपा धारी देह घोड़ी चड़ि हरि पाइआ ॥४॥२॥६॥

Jan naanak hari kirapaa dhaaree deh gho(rr)ee cha(rr)i hari paaiaa ||4||2||6||

The Lord has showered His Mercy upon servant Nanak; mounting the body-horse, he has found the Lord. ||4||2||6||
